4 Dear Reader, Welcome to issue number 97, the start of year nine of publishing for me - happy days! I am feeling rather good about this publishing lark and have been particularly spurred on as some of my advertisers are reporting a much stronger start to trade this year. It is welcome news after a tremendously hard few years for many small businesses. Obviously, I am hoping that the magazine is contributing to their success via reader engagement as that is one of the main reasons I produce the magazine. Equally important is the number of local people who send in articles and event information for the popular what’s on guide in the magazine. Please keep them coming in and I will do my best to print as many as possible. There are lots of events featured in this issue particularly regular meetings and organisers have told me that their listings have make a big difference to membership levels. So really I am saying thanks for your continued support of this magazine. Paul

Training for motorcyclists as deaths increase.

The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) is the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, dedicated to improving standards and safety in driving, motorcycling and cycling. Best known for the advanced test the IAM has more than 100,000 members and is supported by a local volunteer network of 200 groups in the UK and Ireland. South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists are one of those volunteer groups dedicated to improving the skills – and safety – of motorcyclists in South Wales. In 2011, there was an 8 per cent increase in the number of motorcyclists killed and seriously injured, up from 5,183 in 2010 to 5,609. However, motorcycle traffic increased by only 1 per cent in the same period. How can a 1% increase in road traffic account for an 8% increase in death and serious injury? Motorcycle users, per mile ridden, are roughly 35 times more likely to be killed in a road traffic accident than car occupants.

CB ELECTRICAL SERVICES CAERPHILLY

Police data suggests that errors and mistakes by rider’s cause 46% of crashes, so there is a clear need to help riders fix bad habits and get more on-road experience. 61% of Advanced Riders said that, not only had they avoided being involved in an accident since they passed the test, but the skills they learned also adds to their enjoyment on the road. Advanced training brings positive and lasting benefits for motorcycle riders. The vast majority of people who take IAM courses say it makes them feel safer, more confident, more attentive, more observant and more decisive in their riding. Other benefits for Advanced riders are cheaper insurance and discounts on accessories. South Wales Advanced Motorcyclists hold training courses at Harris Café, The Dance Centre, Elm Crescent, Bridgend, CF31 4EA. The course is set over six Saturdays, leading to the Advanced Motorcycling test. For further information contact the secretary 0845 2345 567 www.s-w-a-m.org.uk

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

Our divided society Is social class important? Unfortunately, the answer is ‘yes’. Britain has one of the most class-divided societies in Western Europe and this explains two things – why Britain is such an unequal country and why our country is not fulfilling its potential. Over the past few years it is a fact those at the top of our society have become increasingly wealthy. There are 88 billionaires in today’s Britain and 1.5% of the population are millionaires. The scandal of huge, mind-blowingly large bonuses to bankers has highlighted the massive differences in our country between those at the very top and everyone else. Britain has traditionally been a society divided by social class. First it was the aristocracy and the peasants, then it was the industrialists and the workers, and now it is the super-rich financiers and everyone else. The divisions in our country are often the result of hereditary (the rich pass on their money to their children) and a privileged education (the rich can afford to send their children to elite ‘public’ schools which enable them to gain easy access to Oxbridge and then to get top jobs). Since the international financial crisis of 2008 our social divisions have become worse: the already rich have

become richer, while everyone else, including the poor, have been made to pay the price of the near collapse of the banking system. At the same time, there are fewer and fewer pupils from state comprehensives, especially in Wales, going to the top universities. The reasons for this are complex, but fewer entrants and applicants to Oxford and Cambridge from places like Caerphilly is most definitely not due to today’s youngsters being less bright than their predecessors. Increasingly, it seems that the route to Oxbridge is becoming more and more the preserve of the rich, whose children are given specialist tuition in schools like Eton. I believe in equality of opportunity and I am firmly against vested interests and privilege. Not only is this important to create a ‘fairer’ society, but it is also necessary if we are going to build a country which develops to the full the potential of all its people. Wayne David - M.P.

Choosing the right day care for a child is one of the most important decisions to make, and we think Abigail’s Day Nursery will meet the strictest criteria you can set for your child’s care. We provide day care for children from 6 weeks up to 5 years, as well as pre-school and afterschool clubs. With an attractive, spacious house and gardens, with bright, welcoming indoor spaces and attractive, private gardens

and play areas, it’s no wonder children enjoy being at Abigail’s. It’s convenient for parents too, being just off Caerphilly town centre, adjacent to the rail and bus terminal, and with a large car park for safely dropping off/ collecting your children. You are welcome to call in at any time; meet the people that care for our children, and experience for yourself the warm, friendly, ‘home from home’ environment.

Caerphilly Events Update

As we step into our busy Spring/Summer events programme, the office is hotting up as we prepare for a jam-packed season of events to keep the whole family entertained. First up, we will be putting a ‘spring’ into visitors steps as the annual Spring Fair returns to Hanbury Square in Bargoed on Saturday 12th April from 10am – 4pm. There will be a great selection of Easter themed activities on offer including a treasure hunt & crafts as well as the opportunity to see the Easter bunny hopping around the town. With food & craft stalls and lots of entertainment, this free event will make an egg-stra great family day out!

Exciting news for all the runners in the borough…

Registration is now open for the Caerphilly 10k, which will be returning on Sunday 22nd June, along with the new edition of a Junior 2k run. Its just £14 unaffiliated and £12 for both affiliated club entrants and concessions. An early bird discount of £2 will be applied to the above categories until Tuesday 22nd April. Junior entry is just £3 and corporate/community team entry is £25 per person. To sign up visit the website www.caerphilly.gov. uk/10k. Please note entrants must be aged 15 years or older for the Caerphilly 10k and 8 years or older to participate in the Junior 2k.

The next event for your calendar is the Caerphilly Food Festival, which will be serving up a treat on Saturday 10th May, from 10am – 5pm. Families will be indulged with delicious smells and sights of mouth-watering produce when gazing through the 60+ stalls on offer. The event will also feature a children’s craft marquee, a feast of entertainment and a food demonstration programme where visitors can get the inside scoop on how to make everything from a Samosa to a Cornish pasty and even watch the Great Hotdog Challenge! For further information on the event visit http://your.caerphilly.gov.uk/ foodfestival

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

It starts with a Pot! I wonder if you can relate to this situation ?

Beloved and I will be wandering around a garden centre or nursery and spot a plant we like the look of; then begins a lively discussion which centres around the fact that we have no space for the little beauty of a plant we have just seen, in our already overcrowded garden. Something will have to be dug out to make room for this potential addition … or, we could grow it in a pot. With gardens getting smaller over the last 30 years, I suspect that the ‘I don’t know where to put it’ problem is one of the most common reasons why people don’t buy plants – and so I have become a bit of a manic promoter of container gardening, you can grow a huge range of plants in pots, baskets and window boxes, and with the renewed interest in gardening from a new younger generation – growing in pots may be the only way that we can channel this new enthusiasm to bear fruit (perhaps literally?)

Take a close look at my photo – it is of a London Pub that Beloved and I visited last year; it is almost completely covered in plants in containers – wow! what a sight it was. Wouldn’t it be great if our homes and gardens had a little hint of that ‘colour crammed into every corner’ impression? (maybe your garden already does – in which case you should let me know, and maybe send me a photo). There is a new gardening initiative this year called ‘it starts with a pot’ – you can find them on Facebook. The idea is that we make 2014 and year when ‘the Pot is Hot’! The patio the patio is packed and colour is king ! Come on you can do this … even editors of local community magazines can do this …! (I think that was a challenge …?) BRITAIN’S A BRIGHTER PLACE epaint R y it n u m om C f O rs ea Y 0 2 o T s – Thank MORE SCHEMES, MORE DREAMS IN 2014

Community RePaint, the UK-wide paint re-use network, helped to make Britain a brighter place last year by supporting almost 21,000 groups and individuals to transform their local environment with leftover, re-usable paint. In its 20th anniversary year (2013) householders, traders and paint manufacturers donated 410,148 litres of leftover paint to Community RePaint schemes, which then distributed 245,463 litres to community groups and individuals, saving 638 tonnes of CO2. Groups from across the country took the opportunity to pick up a paintbrush and cheer up their communities. In London, the Forest Recycling Project, which delivers Community RePaint East London, received funding from Groundwork London’s Transform programme to paint murals for capital community groups. By working with Groundwork and residents on the designs, employing local artists and making use of paint that could have ended up in landfill; they created some truly inspirational transformations! Meanwhile community artist Tariel Braisher (Taz) has been busy brushing up his skills in Todmorden. Recovering addict Taz wanted to give something creative back to his community, and with the help of conn3ct, a drug and alcohol support service, he worked with Art Official, NCS, Incredible Edible and volunteers from Halifax Youth Services to brighten up a local park with paint from Community RePaint Bradford.

Dulux helped establish the Community RePaint network 20 years ago and has been proud to be its sole sponsor ever since. David Cornish, Global Sustainability Manager-Resource Efficiency, explained: “Bringing colour to people’s lives is what Dulux is all about. If we can do so by helping people to use paint that would otherwise be wasted, then that's an extra bonus and we are very proud to support Community RePaint in their excellent work.” “The Community RePaint network now has over 70 schemes across the UK and with three new schemes about to start at the beginning of 2014, we are hopeful of even more leftover, re-usable paint being available to brighten up peoples’ homes and communities,” said Community RePaint Network Manager Martin Pearse.

Jeff Cuthbert - AM for Caerphilly

On Saturday, 8th March, the world celebrated International Women’s Day. It was an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development, and it was also an opportunity to unite, communicate and mobilise for meaningful change, to challenge stereotypes and accepted norms and to encourage girls to aspire to the careers in which they are genuinely interested and have an important contribution to make. While here in Wales and across the UK many rights have been afforded to women, International Women’s Day allowed us to reflect on the fact that there are still many women across the world who are not legally allowed to own land; who are not permitted to work in certain jobs; and who experience violence at home every day. Likewise, in terms of democratic representation, the number of women elected to office at all levels has come on in leaps and bounds since women were partially enfranchised in 1918 (remember that women were not fully enfranchised until 1928). However, as a recently-published report suggests, there is still a long way to go. On Wednesday, 5th March, the report of the Expert Group on Diversity in Local Government made a series of recommendations to the Welsh Government, local authorities, the Welsh Local Government Association, political parties and elected councillors themselves. Among these recommendations were agreeing a target with political parties of 40% female candidates in winnable

seats at the next set of local government elections; this was based on a survey result showing that of members elected at the 2012 local government elections, only 28% across Wales were female. My party can rightly be proud of its track record in electing female members; from the first female Labour MP elected in Wales (Dorothy Rees in Barry in 1950), to the large number of female Labour AMs in the National Assembly for Wales (during the Third Assembly between 2007 and 2011, 16 out of Labour’s 26 AMs were female; in the current Fourth Assembly the figure stands at 15 out of 30). However, in local government at least, there is still some way to go. Across all political parties, not enough female councillors are being elected. Of the 73 elected councillors currently on Caerphilly County Borough Council, for example, only 21 are female (15 Labour; 4 Plaid Cymru; and 2 independent councillors). There will be many reasons for this but more concerted action is needed to tackle this problem of under-representation. It’s clear that we’ve come a long way since 1918. It’s also clear that there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to equality of representation, particularly in local government. The Welsh Government will be working hard with councillors, local authorities and all political parties to try and make sure that the number of elected female representatives is increased. International Women’s Day 2014 reminded us of the urgency of this task.

Caerphilly Miners Centre

On 18th March, Caerphilly Miners Centre agreed a 99-year lease for The Beeches building with site owners United Welsh. Wayne David MP, Chair of the Caerphilly Miners Centre group, said: “The signing of the lease is another significant step towards bringing the building back into use for the local community. The Miners’ Centre will be a marvellous facility. While there’s still some way to go our destination is now in sight.” So far the Caerphilly Miners Centre group has secured grants and donations of over £600,000 towards the £1 million plus cost of refurbishing the building. Ongoing commitment and support from the local community remains vital to our success in securing public funds. Preferred contractors, Newman Builders, from Ebbw Vale, hope to start work in May 2014. The first stage of their work will be to restore the roof, walls and windows of the building and make it safe.

The ground floor of the building, which should be open to the public in 12 months’ time, will provide a café, learning centre, IT suite, tutorial rooms and space for local groups to meet. Caerphilly Miners’ next Community Event – at the Twyn Community Centre on Saturday 26th April from 10 am to 12.30 pm will cover learning and schools activities and our Making History project. All welcome to this free event. Further details from Katherine Hughes, Secretary 029 2088 6569 katherine.hughes@btconnect.com Website: www.caerphillyminerscentre.org.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Caerphilly & the surrounding area and Phil is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Older People’s Commissioner For Wales

THE Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Sarah Rochira and her team met with over 150 people at events in Caerphilly County Borough last year. These visits formed part of the Commissioner’s Engagement Roadshow, which met with a total of 5,400 people at 180 events across Wales over the course of 2013. In total, Sarah and her team travelled over 25,000 miles across the country.

“One of the key concerns older people in Caerphilly County Borough have shared with me is the cuts to local bus routes, which leave people lonely and isolated.

The Commissioner and her team have also visited Abbeyfield care homes in the local authority area, met with the Caerphilly Pensioners’ Association and attended the Care and Repair Caerphilly AGM in Ystrad Mynach.

The closure of public toilets, a vital community resource, is also something that many older people in the area have told me they are worried about. It is important, even in these difficult financial times, not to lose sight of the vital role services such Sarah Rochira as these services can play in helping people to get out and about, stay engaged with their local communities and maintain their independence.”

Sarah said: “My Engagement Roadshow has allowed older people to share information with me about their experiences, the things that matter most to them and the things that worry them most about growing older in Wales.

For details about the Commissioner’s work and Engagement Roadshow in 2014, visit www.olderpeoplewales.com or call Engagement Co-ordinator Josh Hayman on 02920 445038.

Engagement events have included a visit to meet members of the Talkers and Listeners Club at the Lennox Club, Bargoed and the Deri 55 Club, finding out what local issues matter to them.

Thought for the Month

Surprise Surprise! If there is one thing we can learn about God from Easter – it is that He is full of surprises. Despite Jesus warning, on several occasions, that He would have to suffer, die and on the 3rd day rise again; when it all happened over those 3 incredible days 2,000 years ago – none were more surprised than his closest friends, with whom he had made special efforts to explain what was about to happen to him. They just didn’t get it so, how different are we? I can find myself shaking my head in quiet dismay at the apparent ‘stupidity’ of Peter, James and John – feeling quite smug at my ease of believing with all the historical evidence we have been brought up with via respected historians and the Bible. But actually, just like those early disciples, we often only believe what we have been brought up to believe … what feels comfortable and ‘normal’ to us.

We so easily package our beliefs, or lack of them, into a nice acceptable ‘religious box’; which we bring out and somewhat awkwardly open up at weddings and funerals – or perhaps Sunday mornings if we are really keen! But are we prepared to be surprised, shocked even, by this God of the Bible? Because for us, and those early disciples, the news keeps on getting more and more surprising and exciting. Resurrection Sunday, the arrival of the Holy Spirit for everyone a few weeks later, more miracles even after Jesus had gone, impossible situations turned around, good news for everyone not just a chosen few – people should be amazed by what they see happening in and through the church. In fact, it might be worth us asking ‘if our God doesn’t surprise or shock us – is he really God?’ Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net
