The Easter Bunny helps to make a child smile this Easter with help from Caerleon Child Care in Llanishen. The Easter Bunny has officially visited Caerleon Child Care in Llanishen after the Manager Kaye Knox sent out an appeal to all her Parents, Carers and staff for Easter Eggs and Easter Toys to be collected for distribution to the Land Ward at the University Hospital of Wales.

Caerleon Child Care opened in January 2012 and now has an amazing 104 very busy children who are enjoying the opportunity to help other children smile. They are also busy making cards and pictures to send with the gifts.

“We have been amazed by the response and have so far received over 100 beautiful chocolate eggs and cuddly toy gifts. The gifts will be received by children aged 2 years to adolescents and we have collected enough gifts for visiting siblings to receive a treat too” Kaye’s daughter Rhian was admitted to hospital herself a few years ago and she always remembers the Easter Bunny coming onto the ward to give her an Easter Egg Treat and how the experience cheered her up and brought a smile to her face.

Recipe

Spiced Rack with of Fragrant Lamb Rice Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavour. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce.

Ingredients: • 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip) • 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each with 6 bones • 2 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 50g butter • 225g basmati rice, rinsed and drained • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 750ml vegetable stock • Generous pinch saffron strands • 50g sultanas • 40g flaked almonds, lightly toasted • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds

Tip:

Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over the lamb racks. Place the racks in an oiled roasting tin and add the onion wedges. Roast in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes depending on how pink you like your lamb. Remove from the oven. Cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes – the lamb will be juicier and easier to carve. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a heavybased pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic. Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds. Carve the lamb racks into individual cutlets and serve immediately with the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges.

Health Feature

Is Your Head Banging? More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. But how do you know what type of headache you have and what the best treatment is? By Julia Faulks Whether you wake up with a banging headache or it develops as a dull ache throughout the day, a headache can be more than just a pain in the head – inconvenient, and at times debilitating. Thankfully most headaches aren’t dangerous, but understanding what type of headache you have and what’s causing it will help you when it comes to choosing treatment. Why does my head hurt? A headache is caused when the blood vessels around the brain swell, along with tension in the muscles and nerves in surrounding muscles. If you’re stressed, not having enough sleep, drinking too much, dehydrated or eating lots of junk food, there’s more chance you’ll end up with a blinder. Eye strain, blocked sinuses, a change in body temperature or blood pressure and hormonal changes are other known triggers. Headaches can also be as a result of a cold virus or other health condition. If you’ve suffered a blow to the head or have a rash accompanied with a headache, always seek medical advice. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and feel as if someone has stretched a

rubber band around the top and side of your head. The pain is normally more constant compared to the throbbing ache you may experience with a migraine, which can cause vomiting and sensitivity to light. Cluster headaches tend to cause an intense pain around one or both eyes and can come on very suddenly. Sufferers may have one to three of these attacks every day for weeks or months and they are often more painful than a migraine. Brewing up a headache Found naturally in tea, coffee and chocolate and added to many energy drinks, it’s more the withdrawal of caffeine than the stimulant itself that can lead to headaches. On the flip side, non-prescription painkillers with added caffeine can actually speed up their effectiveness. Treating your headache You can buy a range of different painkillers over the counter or obtain stronger alternatives on prescription. Some may suit you better than others – they include paracetamol, codeine, anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen) or a group of anti-migraine medicines known as triptans (for example, sumatriptan). It’s recommended that you don’t take painkillers for more

than two days at a time – if you do, you may be at risk of developing ‘medicationoveruse’ headaches. Clearing your head the natural way As well as improving your general lifestyle (more sleep and exercise, less booze and stress) try the following: 1. Essential oils: either use them for massage or add them to your bath. Recommended oils include Lavender, Clary Sage and Roman Chamomile. (Not suitable for pregnant women). 2. Cooling headache pads: For some instant soothing relief, use these alongside any other medication or on their own. 3. Tiger Balm: this is a natural remedy that is often used to help relieve headaches. (Not suitable for pregnant women or children under 2.) 4. Headache pillows: these may help prevent or relieve headaches by providing support to your neck, improving your posture and reducing inflammation. 5. Acupuncture/massage/ reflexology: all of these alternative therapies can be extremely effective at relieving a nagging headache.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Mange Tout, Mange Tout! Some vegetables can be tricky to grow, and can lead to disappointment for anyone taking their first tentative horticultural steps, and so it is with great pleasure that I can confidently suggest that if fancy picking some fresh veg from your own back garden and eating them within half an hour, in true Jamie Oliver style, then you should consider sowing some Mange Tous Pea seeds as soon as possible. In case you’re not sure, Mange Tous Peas (French for ‘eat it all’ Peas) are varieties of Peas of which you can eat the whole pod, usually before the peas inside have swollen up, so you pick the young pods when they look like small smooth runner beans – you can also get some Mange Tous type Peas called ‘sugar snap’ peas which are similar but ‘chunkier’ – not unlike me really. The great advantage to growing these Mange Tous peas is that you can just scoff them straight from the plant, so if you haven’t got enough for a saucepan full, you can still eat them … or if you want a little healthy snack before tea, instead a couple of choccy biscuits, you can

grab a handful of guilt-free very tasty treats from your garden, and believe me they are very tasty!! Just in the last year or two we have seen some new varieties of purple coloured Mange Tous, which are considered ‘by the experts’ to be even more healthy’ and equally tasty. So here’s what you need • A packet of Mange Tous seeds – Cost £2-£3 • A bag (or 2) of decent compost – Cost £5-£6 • Some sticks about 4 foot tall for the peas to climb up – Cost nothing (if you are not too proud to go and cut some from the woods) • A few minutes to sow the seed about 1 cm deep, into the compost, either in the ground or in a pot. Done! Roger Crookes For more info – contact me at: apairofcrookes@lcsuk.net Tel: 02920 864730 www.youtube.com/user/rogthegardener1

Caerphilly & District Floral Society

Caerphilly’s Flower Arranging Club has been ticking along quite nicely since re-commencing last September, even increasing our membership by 10. Our Annual dinner, always planned for January, was duly booked for the 18th at Caerphilly Golf Club and everyone was looking forward to the occasion. But this unpredictable winter had other ideas, and due to the heavy snow, the dinner was postponed not once but twice until the 22nd February.

Hopefully this long winter will soon give way to a beautiful summer (fingers crossed). We look forward to this year’s Flower Festival taking place in July, in which some of our members will be involved. Until then, we will keep ourselves busy with floral arrangements and our summer trip .

We hoped by then the weather would be O.K and it was ! Everyone enjoyed a lovely evening of good food and the wonderful floral arrangements demonstrated by our tutor Mrs Eileen Williams. However, there were some sad moments during the evening. Shelagh, one of our members, had fallen on the way in and broken her wrist and our Tuesday night tutor, Mrs Gillian Davies, was retiring. Shelagh is now well on the road to recovery and Eileen has taken over the Tuesday night class as well as the Wednesday afternoon class –so all’s well that ends well.

Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign

Caerphilly Miners - Back to the community In March we applied for more money for the building to match the £300,000 grant already awarded in principle. The timetable became clearer. If all goes well we hope to be able to open our doors to the ground floor in Summer 2014 and the first floor before the end of 2014. This ambitious plan will be worth waiting for!

We need your encouragement, help and support over the next year - help with fund-raising, taking part in events, becoming a friend or a volunteer. If you are interested, please get in touch with Katherine Hughes on 029 2088 6569 Katherine.hughes@btconnect. com or visit our website on www. caerphillyminerscentre.org.uk.

We’d like to give a special thank you to the team of volunteers who packed bags in Morrison in March and to shoppers who generously donated over £500 to our cause. Thank you also to shoppers in ASDA who voted for us with their green vouchers.

Caerphilly events update

Hi all, As the spring and summer events season approaches, we are all stepping it up a gear in preparation for a jam-packed programme of fun. Don’t forget to pick up your edition of the What’s On Spring/Summer 2013 events guide that is out in the shops now! There is a huge selection of events to keep you entertained from now through until September.

This year’s food festival will be one to remember, featuring Jean-Christophe Novelli, a 5 out of 5 AA Rosette and Michelin award winning chef. The well known chef will be on hand to carry out cookery demonstartions throughout the day and will also give visitors an opportunity for autograph and book signings. Dubbed “the nations favourite french chef” Caerphilly cannot wait to welcome Jean Christophe Novelle into town!

Last month we hosted our second St David’s Day concert series. Risca, Blackwood, Bargoed and Caerphilly were each host to a fantastic concert, which saw local schools performing dance, music and recitals to celebrate this special day. With 20 schools involved it truly was a day to be proud of for our county borough. Our next event is the Bargoed Spring Fair on 13th April. The fair will be host to around 20 traders selling delicious food and unique crafts as well as some local charities displaying their merchandise. Children’s activities will be the main feature of the event and will include pottery, crafts, Punch & Judy shows, face painting and steam train rides, along with some great street theatre and circus workshops, it is really going to be a fun day out. Caerphilly is set to host its second Food Festival on Saturday 4th May with the town centre free of traffic for the day. Cardiff Road will be adorned with stalls offering a food market through the town and hosting a feast of entertainment for all ages. Foodies will be in their element as cookery demonstration programmes accompany the festival, offering inside information on how produce is made and how to improve your own culinary skills.

Thought for the Month

Warbling wake up call I am not very good at waking up in the morning; it doesn’t come naturally to me. But over the last few years, I have found myself waking up as the light starts to creep around the curtains, and the birds start singing: Natures alarm clock is, I find, a slightly more gentle way of waking up, more suited to the ‘Crookes body clock’. So, this morning it was with some pleasure that I laid there at about 6 o’clock, realising that spring was here (always good news) and listened to one solitary bird singing its little heart out, a virtuoso solo performance just for me. I chose to enjoy the experience – a few years ago I might have reacted differently, possibly tried to hide from the new day and its noise and grabbed a few more minutes of grumpy sleep. But I am slowly learning that enjoying a ‘good day’ doesn’t require everything to go according to plan; it needs a decision from me to enjoy and ‘be blessed’ by whatever God sends my way.

As I listened to my warbling wake-up call, I asked God what he might be saying to me at that moment ( I know, it sounds crazy doesn’t it?!) Some verses in Mathew 6 (verse 26) came to mind where Jesus tells us that the birds of the air are precious the God, and he feeds them AND that he values us (you and me) even more. Precious Special, Just as you are – he delights in you, as any father would. So, this Easter it is worth remembering that ‘the reason for the season’ is this - our Father in heaven asked His Son to pay a very high price for our ‘ticket’ into a full life with him, because he treasures us … and on the Easter Sunday he show us just how full of life he is! That’s why the Gospel is called Good News!

Porsche Cayenne GTS You want a 911, but need more space and would rather have the commanding view of the road a 4x4 offers. Is the Porsche Cayenne the answer? We find out… What is it?

It’s a Cayenne – Porsche’s roughty toughty off-roader – but one that’s had a dose of steroids and some glitter liberally applied to its bodywork. Slotting into the range between the V8 S and the Turbo, the GTS comes with more focus and power and some distinctive styling options.

What’s under the bonnet?

A rather raucous 4.8-litre V8 that’s been uprated from 394bhp to 414bhp and boasts 515Nm of torque. Performance is far from the Turbo’s though; the GTS will hit 60mph in 5.7s and go on to 162mph. It sounds pretty special getting there though! Everything else has been on the sharpening block – the steering is crisper, the eightspeed gearbox shifts quicker, and the lowered ride height gives it an added edge on the road.

What’s the kit like?

Pretty impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll soon rack up Ford Fiesta-sized bills on the

options. A communications pack costs £2,157, 21-inch black alloys are £1,513 and even the red paint will set you back £1,619. Our test car had a total of £13,760 worth of goodies…ouch.

Any rivals?

The ageing Range Rover Sport puts up a pretty good fight, but we’ve never tried a Rangie that sounds as good as this GTS. Audi will soon be at the party with its SQ models, but that’s yet to be applied to its Q7. For a left field there’s always the Infiniti Vettel Edition, but that’s very expensive in comparison. So, not much choice out there at the moment.

Is it any good?

Although it’s incredibly quick and sounds tremendous, it can feel a little bit stressed out at times. By that we mean it feels on edge, twitchy even – perhaps the added sharpness has given it a little too much bite. However, there’s no doubting it has real presence on the road – it’s just the styling might not suit all tastes.

The verdict

We like the GTS treatment given to most Porsches. The 997 911 really benefitted from the work over, and the Panamera GTS we tried after this Cayenne worked fantastically well too. However, the off-roader doesn’t feel quite right in this guise. It’s quick and sounds incredible, but feels like it’s pretending to be something that it’s not.

Autism Heroes Awards

Jo Salmon and her 14 year old daughter Holly, who has a high functioning form Autism, have been busily organising a glamorous awards ceremony to celebrate Autism. The Autism Heroes Awards have been designed to showcase the amazing things that are taking place in the world of Autism in Wales. They both feel that it’s important that other people find out more about the condition and that people get recognition for doing amazing things for Autism. The awards ceremony will take place during Holly’s Ball in June 2013. Holly’s Ball is an annual charity event going from strength to strength which celebrates Autism, raises Autism Awareness and funds for Autism Cymru and The National Autistic Society Cymru. The Autism Heroes Awards will be officially launched by Jeff Cuthbert AM at the National Assembly for Wales on 2nd April 2013 - World Autism Awareness Day. The Awards will honour Autism Heroes by recognising the often selfless and unheralded work they do. Jo, the founder of Holly’s Ball says “There are so many people in Wales that are going that extra mile to help children & young people with Autism. We thought that it would be nice to let people know about this good practice. We also feel that people with Autism achieve so much on a daily basis that maybe goes unnoticed. We would like to show you how amazing Autism can be through these awards.”

There are three awards categories in 2013. The Extra Mile Award is for those working with children in Education. The Outstanding Personal Achievement award for children or adults with a spectrum disorder and T The Lifetime Achievement award that recognises people who have made an enormous and positive impact on the lives of people with ASD. The winner of the Extra Mile Award will be voted for by the public and the other awards will judged by a panel of experts including Hugh Morgan of Autism Cymru, Robert Lloyd Griffiths, MD of the IOD and an Autism Employment Ambassador for Wales. There are over half a million people in the UK with autism, that’s around 1 in 100 people. Which is approximately 30,000 people in Wales. People from all nationalities, cultural, religious and social backgrounds can have autism. It appears to affect more men than women. It is a lifelong condition: children with autism grow up to become adults with autism. World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd of April.
