4 Dear Reader Last month I commented that I was heading into 2013 with a renewed energy and feeling of optimism for small businesses including my own. Many readers told me that they were pleased to read such a positive note and many feel the same way .. it’s time to look on the bright side!

Regular features Fun Quiz Page 8

It was kind of ironic that following the distribution of the January magazine (and my cheery message) that we then endured 6 days of snow, ice and freezing cold weather making it difficult for residents to get out and therefore just as tricky for local businesses to maintain a decent level of business....whoops!

Recipe - Satay Skewers

Clearly, my message did not cause the bad weather, which the press had a field day with, but I for one feel that the staff at Caerphilly Borough Council did a brilliant job at keeping the main roads open and also did a good job trying to open up secondary roads and fill estate grit bins regularly.

Is it just me or do you find it a bit bizarre that you can watch the National Weather forecast on the Telly and they have a completely different view to the regional forecasters? I reckon they must just look out of different windows at the Met Office and have a stab at it! There are lots of goodies in this edition but please have a read of the article on page 46 regarding a local campaign aiming to gather up old, and unwanted mobile phones to exchange them for iPads. The iPads will be used at a resource centre in Pontllanfraith by children who have Autism.

BTM Band: The Next Generation

The B.T.M Band: Next Generation is the youth section of the B.T.M (Bedwas Trethomas and Machen) Brass Band, which is one of the most successful brass bands in the country. Both bands are based in Bedwas, in its newly refurbished band room on Newport Road. The Next Generation is made up of local children and young people, some of whom have been playing brass or percussion for several years, whilst some are complete beginners. The band is conducted and tutored by Mark Hutcherson, a high school music teacher who is a founder member of the BTM Band, having started playing at the age of 8ys and became a world class Euphonium player by the time he was 30yrs old. The beginners’ classes are taught by Mark’s daughter, Bethan and Kirsty Davies, solo cornet player with the senior band. Both Bethan and Kirsty are also high school teachers. Since its resurgence 3 years ago, the Next Generation has made a name for itself on the contest and concert stage, having already won a shelf full of trophies in local competitions and has played at many local events such as the

Rudry Fireworks evening, the Big Cheese, and at the bandstand in Castle Court welcoming the Olympic flame to Caerphilly. It has also played at the Millennium Centre, and was very proud to play on the stage at the BBC Proms in the Park last year. The band’s Spring diary is already filling up with its very own St David’s Day concert at the band-room on Saturday 2nd March at 7.00pm. Tickets will be available from Carolyn Jones (07963 393454). The Next Generation will also be joining its “big brother” the BTM Band for a Spring concert, on Saturday 20th April, 7pm at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall. Tickets will be available from Visit Caerphilly from mid-March, or online at the band’s website at www.btmbrassband.com For more information visit the Next Generation website: www.btmbandnextgeneration.com or email btm.band@btinternet.com. To contact Mark Hutcherson, ring 07865 062274, or BTM Band secretary, Carolyn Jones 07963 393454 btmbandsecretary@gmail.com.

Recipe

Satay Vegetable Skewers Serves 4

Ready in 30 minutes If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred.

Ingredients: • 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced

Tip: If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavybased shallow frying pan and add a little oil.

Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary. Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges. Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred. Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

Health Feature

Get Motivated! We can all feel de-motivated at times, so if January has passed you by without starting any of those New Year resolutions, turn February into the month you take some positive steps to regain control. Trying to achieve all that you want in the coming year may feel like an impossible task and it can lead to feeling totally de-motivated. Motivation is key to our creativity, productivity and happiness. When we are motivated we feel like we can take on any challenge, meet any deadline and work through any problem to achieve our goal, whether that’s personal satisfaction or public recognition for a job well done. But once demotivation sets in, then even the smallest task can seem insurmountable.

Set small goals

If you’ve given yourself a big goal this year, such as losing a large amount of weight or changing jobs, break it into small, short term goals. Give yourself weekly targets – losing 5lbs or re-writing your CV - and then congratulate yourself on achieving them. By doing this you are building up positive ‘credits’ in your mind, keeping you going for the following week.

Be inspired

Richard Branson has had a few business failures which he’s written about in his autobiographies. But these set-backs didn’t stop him - he

just tried again. It can be really uplifting to read about other people’s successes. There are also a lot of self-help and business books available which can help you to think about what you do and don’t want. A good one to start with is the international best-seller, Who Moved My Cheese? (Dr Spencer Johnson, Vermilion)

Stay focused

Don’t give yourself too many goals to aim for at once. Focus on one, work out how best to achieve it (in small steps, if needed) and work your way through it before starting on your next goal. Diffusing your energy by trying to change too many things at once will just mean you are less likely to keep up your motivation. So prioritise, write yourself a list and start with number one.

Talk about it

A great motivator is other people. If you tell people that you’re going to start writing that novel this month or apply for the local half marathon, you’re much more likely to do it. Talk to friends, family and work colleagues - their gentle nudges or encouragement will help to keep you on track. Putting up little post-it notes to remind yourself of your goals

and why you want to achieve them will help keep you motivated and on track, too.

Reward yourself

For every achievement, however big or small, reward yourself - you deserve it.

Reject negative thoughts

How many times do you find yourself saying ‘I can’t do it’, ‘it won’t happen’, or ‘it’s too hard’? Negative thoughts can really bring you down, so give yourself a buzz word or mantra to repeat immediately when a negative thought pops into your head. ‘I’m doing it.’

Look at the positive

Starting to exercise, cutting down on unhealthy food, changing jobs, starting your own business. None of these are easy. Accept that there will be set-backs and bad days or bad weeks. But keep looking at the positives - what did you manage to achieve this week, or how are you going to do better next week? So plan ahead, have lots of small goals to help you reach your big goal, accept there will be set-backs and look at how other people have done what you would like to do. And keep going - you’re doing great!

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

I kid you not! I was amazed – I think it was on the 1st of January this year, mild but cloudy if I recall, as I stepped out of my car I could smell my favourite January plant 20 metres away by the back door. “Cor there’s a pong” I remarked to my beloved, who gave me a slightly concerned look until I explained that I was referring to the smell from the Sarcococca by our back door, she had to admit it was one of my better smells. But that was not the end of it – a bit later I was sat in my office (working like a Trojan – just in case you know who is reading this), and beloved opened the back door for minute, and to my amazement the delicious smell of the Sarcococca drifted through the Kitchen, across the passage and into my office – the perfume was permeating the house!

R.M.H SERVICES T:02920 888 645 M:07971 287922

So, Ladies and Gentlemen of Caerphilly, I give you the Sarcococca – also known as Christmas box • A lovely little evergreen shrub, reaching about a metre high and a metre across • It is happy to be trimmed and makes a great little low hedge • Excellent in the shade, and not that fussy about soil • Masses of small white flowers in little clusters in the 2nd half of winter – which are deliciously perfumed … as you may have already gathered • Available in any good garden centre near you for about £10.00 each (If you want a laugh you could go to my youtube channel and see my first attempt at a gardening video clip where I talk about … Sarcococca you can find it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYrSOSlFjqk) For more info – contact me at: apairofcrookes@lcsuk.net Tel: 02920 864730 www.youtube.com/user/rogthegardener1

Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign

We are still working on funding for refurbishing the building, but this month, we’d particularly like your help with this project. Making History Project – do you have a story to tell? We are creating a collection of (digital) stories about the role of the miners and the health of our community. We are looking to (story tellers) people from the community, who would be willing to tell us their story. These are 2-3 minute short clips – with some pictures and a voice-over from you. All we need from you is a short story, some old photos if you have them and we do all the rest! This digital archive will cover the following topics: • life in a coalfield community; • the need for a Miners’ hospital; • camaraderie and community spirit; • day and night on the ward; • returning the Caerphilly Miners back to the community

Finance 10 Easy Ways To Save Money While many people hold notions of being better with money, it’s rare that a practical action plan is put together. Here are ten top money-saving tips which are commonlyoverlooked and which, over the course of the year, will have a drastic impact on your expendable income. 1. Pausing for Thought The four-day wait works. Any time you’re about to buy something which isn’t a necessity, listen to that niggling voice on your shoulder and wait four days until purchasing. Developing this simple habit rids you of compulsive buying inclinations and affords you time to compare prices online. 2. Balance Your Bank Account Few people take the time to balance bank statements. What your bank statement says you have at the end of each month is not the money that’s available to spend. Learn to reconcile your accounts and track your finances properly. Understanding your financial throughput properly will help develop positive spending habits. 3. Resell Your Clutter It’s frighteningly easy to accumulate unnecessary and unused products. Survey your belongings and unclutter your house and loft by setting up

a Gumtree or eBay account. Rid yourself of these things in a way which will make you money. 4. Transfer Your Balances If you have credit card debts, find another credit card offering 0% interest for several months, sign up and transfer the balance over. You can do this as many times as there are card companies and it will save you a fortune in interest. 5. Insurance Swapping Put aside an afternoon to use insurance comparison sites. Finding cheaper deals on your car, home, life and other insurances will take just a couple of hours and could save you hundreds of pounds. 6. Mortgage Shopping While you may have been given a good deal on your mortgage initially, shopping around for a new mortgage could save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds every year if you find a great deal, so spend an afternoon hunting around. Always check the small print. 7. 0% Interest on Purchases When purchasing new products which offer 0% interest, the APR is worked into the price. If you’re in a position to pay cash, negotiate with the salesperson to do so, but minus the interest worked into the cost. You’d be surprised

how often this works and, if the salesperson seems uppity, ask to speak to the manager. 8. Creative Re-using Develop the habit of re-using things. Use modified cornflake boxes for file holders and the bags inside for storing bread in the freezer. Re-use padded envelopes, cut old towels into cleaning cloths and always be on the lookout for new and creative ways to re-use things to save money. 9. Claiming Tax Benefits A certain stigma used to be attached to claiming tax benefits. Not anymore, and the government puts tax credits at the heart of family budget policies to garner public support. Make sure you take advantage of this and claim for child benefit, working tax and child tax credit if you’re eligible: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/ taxcredits.htm 10. Join Money Saving Expert Saving money should become a hobby and there’s no better place to do so than Money Saving Expert. The forums are awash with incredibly insightful and useful guides on how to save more money than you ever thought possible. Caerphilly events update

Hi All, The New Year has once again got off to a busy start in the office, with the team working on forthcoming events; which this year kick off in March. Following on from the success of the St. David’s Day concerts held in 2012, this year’s series of concerts are set to take place again in our key town centres. On Friday 1st March in Caerphilly, Blackwood, Bargoed and Risca, local schools and groups will feature in our special outdoor concerts. Approximately 20 schools will be singing, dancing and performing recitals, along with Welsh themed stilt walkers entertaining the crowds at each venue. All events start at 12pm and will take place until around 2pm. For more St David’s Day events and information on town centre concerts visit our website. www.caerphilly.gov.uk/stdavidsday

Caerphilly Visitor Guide 2013 is out now with information on the area including where to stay, visit and eat. Pick up copy at The Visit Caerphilly Centre or view an online brochure at www.visitcaerphilly.com. Our Spring/ Summer Events Guide will be out soon, jam packed with events from the end of March – September. Pick up a copy from local retail outlets, pubs, cafes and many other outlets, from around the middle of March. Plans are underway for our major events with all application forms ready to be sent out shortly. Following the success of the 2012 Caerphilly Food Festival, which last year coincided with the Olympic torch relay, this year’s event is set to be a feast of fun for all the family and will not disappoint. With over 60 stalls expected to line the streets of Caerphilly town, along with entertainment and activities to suit all ages, we are really turning up the heat! Information on Caerphilly Food Festival will be posted on our website as event preperations unfold, visit www.caerphilly.gov. uk/foodfestival to keep up to date with announcements.

We will be revealing which celebrity chef will be coming along to the food festival very shortly! Bargoed town centre sees the return of the ever popular outdoor cinema on Friday 22nd March, the film is yet to be confirmed but will be a family flick to suits all ages. As soon as we have a film confirmed we will let you know. Also, keep an eye out for more details on Bargoed’s Spring Fayre on Saturday 13th April. Get fit this spring by entering the second year of ‘The Caerphilly Challenge Series – The Ridgeway’ on Saturday 11th May. This series of walks follows on from last year’s successful Twmbarlwm Trek where over 500 walkers took part. This year choose from three routes – 22, 16 and 9 miles or one of the gentle 1 - 5 mile led River Rhymney walks. Walkers, joggers and runners are all invited! To book your place for the 22, 16 or 9 mile walk go to your.caerphilly.gov.uk/countryside. Entry is just £10 per person or catch the early bird offer of £8 if booked before 1st March. River walks are free to enter, just register on the day. If you are looking for things to do in February half term take a look at a full list of events on page 39. That’s all for now, we’ll bring you more news in the next edition of My Local View! Thought for the Month

Feeling Blue… As I write I am on a plane again, somewhere over the vast (and to some perhaps, boring) Atlantic Ocean – heading in a south / south westerly direction for about 9 hours – which for me is an exciting way to spend a Wednesday morning. Anyway, as tends to happen to me, when I press my nose up against the frosted surface of a Perspex window at 50,000 feet – I start thinking. Some would call it daydreaming, I would call it constructive thinking – and I find a window with a view, and no distractions, most helpful in this process – I really do recommend it! Thinking, imagining - not worrying or planning, or trying even – just letting ‘your eyes speak to you’….ok maybe it is daydreaming, but it can be a great use of your time. So, here’s what I am thinking - Blue – it’s a wonderful colour. It’s not my favourite colour mind you; between you and me, pink is my favourite colour, but my beloved says that I shouldn’t go around telling people that – so mum’s the word, ok? Blue is the colour of water; and it seems from where I am sat, that blue is the colour of air too, blue is everywhere, it is always there – ok you may have to look past a cloud or two to find it.

Think back to moment when the sky was a really rich blue, and maybe you were looking out over sparkling blue sea … and somewhere out there those two shades of blue meet, they silently merge together in one glorious untouchable horizon. When you picture that scene, how do you feel? Don’t you relax a little? Isn’t there a hint of a grin? A sense that maybe the world is ok after all? Do you see the bigger picture? I like to think that GOD appreciates colour, and how it makes me feel. It’s the way he made the world, and us. I expect that he loves it when we take a moment to savour and appreciate his handiwork. It’s a bit like an artist observing you out of the corner of his eye as you marvel at his picture – enjoying the fact that you are feeling what he was feeling as he painted it. I ‘felt’ blue. Why, to most people does feeling blue mean that they are down? I am most definitely up! Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

Little Wonders How little tablets can be cheap and cheerful

Tablets are wonderful things, but they can be pricey: while £400 isn’t much compared to the price of a high-end laptop, it’s still £400. But you don’t need to spend that much to find a perfectly good tablet: in fact, there are good ones for as little as £99.

it’s Google’s own device it’s a proper Android tablet without the customisation that some manufacturers add to the operating system. Once again it’s a seven-inch device with a powerful processor, integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking and good battery life.

The £99 tablet is Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which dropped from £129 to £99 in November (if it’s gone back up again, don’t worry - you can be sure the price will fall again very soon). While it isn’t exactly state of the art it’s still a perfectly decent tablet for watching videos, playing Angry Birds, using Facebook and so on.

There are two other £159 tablets to consider: the Kobo Arc and the Nook HD. The former comes from Kobo, Amazon’s main rival in the ereading sector, and it’s aimed primarily at e-book readers who fancy the odd video, song or bit of web browsing, while the latter is by US bookselling giant Barnes & Noble and hopes to carve a niche offering electronic magazines as well as apps. Technically speaking they’re very good - the Nook HD in particular has a wonderful screen, is very light and easy to use - but tablets rise and fall on the strength of their content libraries and Amazon has the edge in that department. If you want a tablet that has lots of stuff to choose from and which is very easy to use, the Kindle Fire HD will look very attractive; if you’re more techy and want something you can fiddle with too, Google’s Nexus is more

If you fancy something a little more powerful but not much more expensive, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is very good too. It boasts a much better screen, which is superb for video, and comes with more storage, faster Wi-Fi wireless networking and a faster processor. Prices start at just £159 for the 16GB model. Before you spend £159, though, check out Google’s offering, the Nexus 7. Like the Kindle Fire it’s just £159 for the 16GB model, and as

likely to appeal. You can’t mention tablets without mentioning Apple, and while Apple also has a cheap tablet we’re talking cheap in Apple terms: the iPad mini starts at £269, which is significantly more than other seven-ish-inch tablets - although it’s a good bit less than a full-sized iPad. Apple claims it’s “every inch an iPad”, and that’s a fair claim: it’s essentially an iPad 2 crammed into a smaller case, so it runs existing iPad apps quite happily. It has more available tablet apps than any other small tablet, it has a slightly bigger screen - it’s 7.9 inches rather than the rivals’ 7 inches, which doesn’t sound much but makes a big difference when you’re using it - and to our eyes it’s much better-looking and better-engineered than any rival. Is the iPad mini worth the extra cash? If you want a premium tablet, you’re using other Apple products or you’ve already amassed a stack of iOS apps then yes. If not, you may well find that a smaller rival will be just as much fun for considerably less cash.

Land Rover Freelander What is it? Land Rover’s perennial compact SUV given a little wipe over with the flannel to freshen it up. The changes aren’t huge inside or out, but they’re enough to give it a new lease of life. The talking points on the outside are some smart new headlights, new rear taillights that look like dumpy red snowmen, and a more striking grille. Inside it’s had more attention with an Evoque-ess makeover.

What’s under the bonnet? There are two diesel units which are both 2.2 litres in size but with different power outputs, 147 bhp and 187 bhp, they both offer four-wheel drive. There’s also a 150PS version in two-wheel drive form, but quite why you’d opt for that we have no idea apart from its lower CO2 emissions. We tried a brilliant 2.0-litre petrol engine too on our road test in Canada, but sadly this won’t be coming to the UK. In fact, it was actually our pick of the bunch.

What’s the kit like? It’s on the inside where the manufacturer has really

Land Rover has given its perennial premium compact SUV a nip and tuck for 2013 – but is it enough to keep buyers interested in the off-roader? We take it for a spin in the icy wilds of snowblown Canada.

gone to work. The centre console is new and the old Terrain Response dial has been swapped for buttons from the Evoque. A new instrument cluster has been installed which has a five inch display that offers the important details. It now has keyless go, a brilliant hitch assist that helps drivers line up their tow bar and clever voice activation. There are three new colours to choose from paint wise and the stereo system provided by Meridian is nothing short of extravagant.

Any rivals? There are lots, and that’s the problem. Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and VW Tiguan all represent very talented and capable alternatives to the rugged Brit. All are newer than the Freelander and are tough competition to the Land Rover.

Is it any good? If you were hoping for a whole new car, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This revision is a nip and tuck at best bringing its styling into line with the other, newer models in the range. However there’s no denying that the Freelander is extremely capable off-road

– some of the terrain we tackled on the launch was positively frightening and it sailed right through it.

What’s our verdict? The revisions inside bring the Freelander up to date, but we had rather hoped they’d have done more with the exterior. The new lights are striking, but nowhere near as bold as its sister cars which is a shame, however its capability off road can’t be doubted and despite its age we still think it’s a rugged alternative to some often rather boring Germanic offerings. It’s worth a look for the pony-pulling set.

Do you have old mobile phones at home?

Grace is 4 years old with severe Autism and she attends a Specialist Resource Base for children with ASD in Pontllanfraith Primary School, Caerphilly. Grace is non-verbal, with very little understanding and cannot do everyday things we take for granted such as drink from an open cup or use a spoon BUT she is a whizz on an Ipad! This is because children like Grace are very visual learners and with an Ipad a few swipes, taps or flicks of a finger can open up a whole world of learning, communication and play opportunities! We have teamed up with The Hearts & Minds Challenge charity, who’s patrons are Keith Duffy, Melanie Sykes and Paul Scholes (all celebs with children who have Autism) to exchange OLD MOBILE PHONES for Ipads for children with Autism. We are collecting as many as we can to get Ipads into the unit for Grace and her classmates. 165 Old Mobiles equals 1 iPad.

The phones can be ancient, do not have to work or have chargers BUT are priceless to us in reaching our target.

So please if you have any mobile phones hidden away in the backs of your cupboards at home or are a business with a lost property section who might like to donate the unclaimed phones to us, we would be eternally grateful and you would be helping some very special, local children.

Drop off points for any old phones include The Royal Palace Chinese Takeaway on Pontygwindy Road, My Local View Magazine in Hendredenny, Jets Models in Bartlett Street & The Black Cock Inn on Caerphilly Mountain. We are working to secure other drop off points so if you can help please call Paul at My Local View and we will add you to a downloadable list which will be available at http://www.mylocalview.co.uk/oldphones
