AN INTEGRATED SPEAKING QUESTION (LISTENING AND SPEAKING) SPEAKING QUESTION 5 CAMPUS-BASED PROBLEM SOLUTION NOTE-TAKING SCHEME FOR TOEFL SPEAKING QUESTION 5 LISTENING •

P(Problem): You should include the problem described in the listening passage.

S1(Solution): First, you have to write one solution and details to support it.

S2(Solution): Second, you have to write another solution and details to support it.

Op(My opinion): This space is left for giving own opinion about which of the two solutions you prefer.

LISTENING TIME: 60-90 SECONDS PREPARATION TIME: 20 SECONDS RESPONSE TIME: 60 SECONDS

SAMPLE QUESTION TO RESPONSE QUESTION: Briefly summarize the man’s two options for the holidays. Then state which solution you would recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation. EXAMPLE:

14

15

The man has two options for the holidays. The first is the one the girl was recommending. The college has arranged for students to get work experience at a law firm. Here, the students will be able to learn on-the-job skills. The man’s other option is to attend a two-week course so that he can retake one of his exams: a family law exam. Both options have advantages. The work experience will be useful because it will help students learn what it is like to work in a real law firm, and it may help them find a job in the future. Not only that, but they may be able to use what they’ve learned in future assignments at the college. A third advantage is that the work is paid, and most students are short of money, so I expect this would be a real bonus, because it’s difficult for students to find temporary jobs in the college holidays. However, the exam option is also beneficial. If the man went on the course, he’d be able to get a better grade in his exam, and this will boost his final mark overall. Plus, he will be able to spend more time talking to the tutors, which would be useful for him, because he missed a lot of classes last term because of his illness. Thirdly, the course doesn’t cost anything, so the man may as well take advantage of it. ADVICE FOR ANSWERING TOEFL SPEAKING QUESTION 5 •

TAKING NOTES

In this question, the taking notes helps to have some ideas in order to response in a good way. One of the most effective ways to remember what you are listening. It is effective because you can understand the main points and details. This tip has many advantages in order to help you understand the listening passage. o Notes are neatly organized, summarized, and easy to review o Allows you to pull out major ideas and concepts o Helps you remember and connect relationships between topics o You are able to cover a lot of details and information quickly. Before you do anything else, write down the structure for your notes. When taking notes on the dialogue, first write down the problem, then write down the two solutions.

16

After the dialogue is finished, look at the computer screen and focus on the prompt. What do you have to do? Look back at your notes, label what’s necessary, and find the information in your notes. Also, circle the solution you would choose. With your 20 seconds of preparation time, write down a few notes about a personal story that relates to the solution you chose. •

PARAPHRASING

This is paraphrasing - using your own words to express someone else's message or ideas. In a paraphrase, the ideas and meaning of the original source must be maintained; the main ideas need to come through, but the wording has to be your own. It is a great way to answer the question speaking 5. The key points that you wrote in the taking notes so, you make sure to put it into your own words. Paraphrasing is the helpful strategy to find new ways to express simple phrases, sentences or single words. But you should remember that it is important to keep the original meaning and to present it in a new form. Basically, you are simply writing something in your own words that expresses the original idea. •

SAMPLE QUESTION: Using information from the talk, describe what we know about water on Mars, and how we know it.

EXAMPLE: The professor tells us that there was once water on Mars. There was a similar

amount of water on the planet as there is on earth now. We know this because of data retrieved by a probe which is in orbit around Mars. The probe was launched in 1996, and has been sending data back to Earth ever since then. It has taken photographs and measured the shape of the land, so that maps can be drawn. From this information, scientists have been able to deduce that there was water there, because the rock formations on Mars are similar to the formation on Earth that were formed by water. Some of those scientists believe that there is water on Mars even now, but there doesn’t seem to be any evidence for this. Some studies have been done on a meteorite which landed on Earth in 2001, but there was no sign of any water there, although that

doesn’t mean there isn’t any water on Mars, because Mars and this meteorite are not the same thing. We can also get pictures from astronomical telescopes, but they don’t really help us ascertain whether there is water on Mars or not either, because from this angle, we can only see the poles of Mars, and these are covered in dry ice. So, according to the lecture, we still don’t know whether or not there is currently water on Mars. RECOMENTADATION (Personal advices) •

THE FIRST TIP: TAKING NOTES

Take notes on the main ideas and supporting details in the lectures. You will improve your listening comprehension and your academic vocabulary that could help you more easily understand the topics on the TOEFL IBT test. During the question speaking 6 you should do the following steps:

20

21

o Before you do anything else, write down the structure of your notes. o When taking notes on the lecture be sure to listen for and note the new concept and definition. o Also, be sure to listen closely for transitions. They signify a change between two different thoughts or ideas. o After the lecture is finished, look for information. And circle the information. In order to connect the prompt to your notes. This tip is essential because it will help me prepare my response and determine exactly what information I must include in my response. •

THE SECOND TIP: SUMMARIZE THE MAIN IDEA OF THE LECTURE

Summarizing is an important strategy in this type of question because it helps me to know how to ignore irrelevant information, and how to integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. Summarize improves your memory for what is read and you can remember the information that you listen. o So, It helps to learn to determine essential ideas and consolidate important details that support them. o It enables to focus on key words and phrases of an assigned text or listening that are worth noting and remembering. o It teaches how to take a large selection of text and reduce it to the main points for more concise understanding of your response. •

THIRD TIP: USING A RESPONSE FORMAT

The following format helps me organize my response. o The profesor discuss…………….which she/he defines as…………. o He describes two kinds……..…. o First …….(definition) o The profesor provide an example of………… to illustrate this

21

22

o Second …….(definition) o The profesor provide an example of………… to illustrate this o And that´s how the professor describes ……….. These phrases or sentences are useful when I organize my response. Also, It is helpful because these can help to make my answer more understandable to the raters. When you give you response, use this format and connect the topic, the main ideas, and the examples and to clarify the relationship among these points in the response. AMBATO – ECUADOR AN INTEGRATED SPEAKING QUESTION (READING, LISTENING AND SPEAKING) SPEAKING QUESTION 3 CAMPUS BASED ANNOUNCEMENT-OPINION NOTE-TAKING SCHEME FOR TOEFL SPEAKING QUESTION 3 •

TOPIC: Make sure that you understand and take notes on the topic of the reading.

OPINION: Listen carefully for the opinions of the speakers concerning the announcement.

REASONS ✓ FIRST REASON: Listen carefully for one reason of the speaker about his or her opinion. ✓ SECOND REASON: Listen carefully for other reason of the speaker about

his or her opinion.

READING TIME: 45-50 SECONDS LISTENING TIME: 60-90 SECONDS PREPARATION TIME: 30 SECONDS RESPONSE TIME: 60 SECONDS SAMPLE QUESTION TO RESPONSE READING Group Work The geology department is aware of the problems surrounding of group work, and its unpopularity among students. We realize that in some cases students do not contribute and thus gain marks they do not deserve, while stronger students are frustrated at being held back by weaker students. Similarly, it is very difficult for tutors to award marks for group projects, as it is unclear who is responsible for each part. However, the department feels that there is a great deal to be gained from group work, in terms of self-organization and communication skills. To this end, we plan to introduce a system whereby the group work itself is not formally assessed, but each student will undertake an individual piece of work based on the group project, which will be designed to

24

25

QUESTION: The man expresses his opinion of group work. State and explain his opinion. Compare his opinion with the opinion of the geology faculty. EXAMPLE:

The man is not keen on group work. In his experience, group work was frustrating because another group-member wasn’t interested in his ideas and so did the work himself. He denies being a freeloader because he did try, unlike the other teammember, but he admits that he did not deserve the marks he was awarded, because so little of the group work was his own. So it sounds as if the faculty is right in identifying that group marks don’t correctly reflect the amount of work students have done. Another problem is that the man wishes he’d had the opportunity to approach the task in an individual way. The faculty seems to recognize this. That is why they have decided to implement a system whereby students do an individual piece of work based on a group project. The man and the faculty don’t agree on everything, though. The man doesn’t think that the skills required in group work; that is, group organization and communication, are useful for a student of geology. However, the faculty thinks they are, and that’s why they aren’t abolishing group work altogether.

READING TIME: 45-50 SECONDS LISTENING TIME: 60-90 SECONDS PREPARATION TIME: 30 SECONDS RESPONSE TIME: 60 SECONDS SAMPLE QUESTION TO RESPONSE VAK THEORY

One theory of learning states that we use three sensory receivers: visual (V), auditory (A), and kinesthetic (K) when we take in information. According to the VAK theory, one or two of these receiving styles is normally dominant and thus defines the best way for a person to learn new information. Thus, a visual learner learns best using their sight; an auditory learner learns best when listening, and a kinesthetic learner learns best through physical activity. VAK is one of the most popular learning models nowadays due to its simplicity. Teachers are beginning to incorporate a range of stimuli and activities into their lessons so as to cater for all types of learner. Although it is

28

29

QUESTION: Explain VAK Theory and how the example used by the professor illustrates how the theory can be applied. EXAMPLE: The idea behind the VAK theory is that everyone has a preferred way of learning. Visual people learn best through looking at things, auditory learners learn best when

they hear something, and kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. The theory suggests that teachers need to include a range of activities in their lessons so that all pupils, whether they are visual, auditory or kinesthetic, get the chance to learn. The professor’s example shows a teacher doing just this. The game, where the students name trees, and the teacher’s opening talk, is designed to suit auditory learners, because at this point, they’re only using their ears. The photos, and the part where the students copy pictures of leaves is visual, although you could say that copying pictures is kinesthetic too. The part where they go outside and look at leaves is kinesthetic. The fact that the student could remember the shape of the oak leaf suggests that applying the VAK theory is a useful way of helping students to learn.

However, we can’t assume it was the VAK theory that helped her remember. ADVICE FOR ANSWERING TOEFL SPEAKING QUESTION 4 •
