光と影の詩趣 ( ポエトリー )

2000 年以降の池田の作品は、光と影が主題であり技法となっている。もちろん、技法と 主題が重なる、あるいは同一化するというような事態は、厳密な意味においては起こり得 ない。主題としての光と影というものは歴史的な意味での物語が当然のごとく想起され、 そこには作者自身の作品が辿ってきた道程も含意される。また、技法としての光と影とい うものは物理的な問題に還元化され得るものであり、科学史的な部分によって担われてき た現象である。とはいえ、両者は池田の作品の中で相互に往還する処があり、その緊張感 のある関係が作者に創意を導き出すのである。 物質的なメディウムによる絵画が歴史的な意味で展開してきた経緯には、宗教的な要素 が介在してきたところが大きい。光と影が織り成す技法もその主題によって華開いたこと は、欧州あるいは中近東に点在する教会に設けられた華麗なステンドグラス群によって誰 もが認めるところであろう。その燦めきは時間的な経緯や季節の移り変わりによって変化 し、人々の心の揺らぎを映し出すかのようでもあり、見る者は宗教的物語を伴いながら、 その対象に感情移入を遂げていくのである。その表現技法は中世からの遺産であるそれら 教会に設けられたステンドグラスに止まらない。近代美術史上に多大なる功績を残したア ンリ・マチスが最晩年に手がけた南仏ヴァンスにあるロザリオ礼拝堂のステンドグラスが 織りなす多彩な光の交響曲 ( シンフォニー ) は、多くの者を宗教的な主題を越えた何もの かを感じさせる領域へと誘うのである。 歴史的な意味で、ここ日本の風土に於ける光と影は、そのような鮮やかな色彩を含む要 素は少ない。谷崎潤一郎が「陰翳礼賛」で指摘するように、木と紙で出来ている日本家屋 は横なぐりの雨や強い日差しを防ぐために深い庇を生み出して暗い部屋を用意し、いつし か繊細な陰翳のなかに美を見出すようになったのであろう。そのような繊細な美的感覚を 指摘するのは谷崎一人にとどまらない。芭蕉の高弟其角 ( きかく ) が「名月や畳の上に松 の影」と詠じるように極めて繊細な光と影は江戸期から美と認識されていたのである。さ らには、人工光に埋もれた生活を営んでいる我々にもそのような俳諧の意が辛うじて通じ るところに、そのような美的感受性を育む DNA が脈々と流れていることを感じるのであ る。 私は、池田啓子の近年の作品の中にも、そのような繊細な光に対する精神を看取ること があった。特に《LIGHT/FORM》(2002) と題された数百枚のアクリルミラーを展示空間 の壁面に規則的に配した作品は、そのミニマルな構造だけを考えると極めて近代的な世界 を生み出しているように聞こえるかもしれない。しかしながら、その展示で用意されたの は自然光である。しかもごく限られた差し込み口から入り込む光線は大きな展示空間に対 して支配的な光量を持ち得ず、さらには日が傾き始める時刻には当然のごとく光量は漸減

し、ある深遠な世界を生み出すのである。展示空間に比して小さいハーフミラーが生み出 す細やかな陰翳が、既述した俳句に照らしていえば、座敷の畳の目の生み出すある幽玄な 世界にも見えた、ということは作家には想像し得ないところかもしれない。 池田の光に対する繊細な感受性は自然光に限られたものではない。《light work/2005#1》 (2005) という作品では、光を閉ざした広い展示空間の地上数センチの処に、ミリ単位の小 さな丸い受光体を規則正しく無数に設け、ブラックライトによってそれら受光体を光らせ る。薄暗い空間に妖しく光る無数の受光体は、ある浮遊感を伴いながらも規則正しく配列 されることによって遠近感を生み出し、天空から夜の未来都市を俯瞰するかのような世界 を体現する。このような光景は宮沢賢治の散文によって表現されてきたのだが、池田のそ れは造形的な手法で我々を遊ばせるのである。 2008 年水泉動

Poetry of Light and Shadows

Since 2000, light and shadows have been the central theme and technique in Ikeda Keiko's work. Of course, a situation in which theme and technique completely overlap or assimilate is, in the strictest sense, impossible. As a theme, light and shadows naturally trigger memories of historical narratives, including those related to the process by which the artist has arrived at the work. In addition, the use of these elements as a technique necessitates a return to the question of narrative while as phenomena, light and shadows fall under the domain of scientific history. Nonetheless, these elements exhibit a mutual, circular relationship in Ikeda's work, and the ar tist ingenuously draws out a sense of tension between the two.

As a material medium, the historical development of painting was greatly influenced by the intervention of religion. The technique of interweaving light and shadows also flowered as a result, as anyone who has seen the splendid stained glass in churches scattered across Europe and the Middle East would quickly acknowledge. The radiance of the glass differs according to temporal and seasonal variations and also seems to mirror the fluctuations in the viewer's heart, while through the religious narrative, one achieves a sense of empathy for the subject. This means of expression isn't merely a religious legacy of the Middle Ages. Take the multicolored symphony of light produced by the stained glass in the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, a town in the south of France. Created by Henri Matisse (an artist whose considerable achievements are an important part of modern art history) toward the end of his life, the glass invites many viewers to a place in which they can experience something that transcends the religious theme.

Historically speaking, examples of light and shadows that include such brilliant colors are unusual in the Japanese climate. As Tanizaki Junichiro points out in his book In Praise of Shadows, the Japanese house, made of paper and wood, contains dark rooms produced by deep eaves that

protect the structure from horizontal torrents of rain and strong sunlight, allowing only an occasional discovery of beauty in the subtle shadows. This type of delicate aesthetic sensibility, however, predates Tanizaki. As a haiku

by Kikaku, one of Basho's greatest pupils, suggests, "The bright harvest moon / Upon the tatami mats / Shadow of the pines," the extremely subtle state of light and shadows were recognized for their beauty as far back as the 17th century. Moreover, although to contemporary Japanese people whose lives are submerged in artificial light, the significance of a poem of this sort isn't easy to comprehend, one is left with the sense that the DNA that controls our aesthetic sensitivity remains largely unchanged.

Among Ikeda Keiko's recent works, I have noticed the presence of a similar sensitivity to subtle light. Of particular note is a work titled Light/ Form (2002), which incorporates hundreds of acrylic mirrors that are systematically arranged on the walls of the exhibition space — from the work's minimal structure alone, one might well envision an ultra-modern environment. Yet, the work is equipped with natural light. More importantly, though the rays are allowed into the space through only a narrow slot, the light can't help but dominate the large space. Further, when the sun begins to set in a completely natural way, the amount of light in the space gradually diminishes, giving way to a subtle and profound atmosphere. If the subtle shadows that the small half mirrors produce were lit in the manner of the aforementioned haiku, an ethereal realm would surely emerge out of the tatami room — something the artist herself probably couldn't have imagined.

Ikeda's subtle receptivity to light extends beyond natural light. In a piece called light work/2005 #1 (2005), at a point a few centimeters above the surface of the ground in an expansive exhibition room that shuts out the light, countless, small, round light-receptive components are set up in a well-ordered fashion. These are illuminated with black lights. The numerous components, which shine suspiciously in the dusky space, create a sense

of perspective both through their floating appearance and their regulated arrangement, embodying a world in which one is afforded an aerial view of a futuristic city. While this spectacle was described in prose by Miyazawa Kenji, Ikeda amuses us by expressing it in a concrete form.

Ikeda has not only shown an interest in this type of elaborate structure and responded in a sensitive way to natural phenomena, but by brilliantly controlling the rich expressiveness of light with such precision, she has also created devices that invite the viewer to take to the sky. Her work seems to me to provide an insight into the direction that a select few of Japan's artists are pursuing while also making one aware of the countless possibilities in this poetic sentiment.

池田啓子 -I’ m hereある午後の日、室内を徐々に厚い光の層が充満してくるのを身体が捉えた瞬

間、宇宙のようなものを感じたときがある。そして、日常生活の端々に垣間見 られる光の自然の現象とそのリズムが、心地よく身体へと関与しているのに気 付いた。その時、感覚的なものと精神的なものとのバランスのなかに物事の本 質があるのではないかと感じた。それ以来近年、「光」を主題にした作品を制 作し続けています。

「見ること・・・」とは、見えない物を見ようとする想像力 ( 意識 ) が、見え

ない物を感じそれを思い考える。さらに、思い考えた物を感じ取る意識ではな

いかと考えている。「見ること」を踏まえ、作品に使用した二つの素材「自然 光 ( 太陽 ) と人工光 ( ブラックライト )」が創り出す光の造形から、物事の本 質を考えることにした。

その一つは、自然光 ( 太陽 ) と蛍光を含んだ物質 ( 紙、糸、絵具 ) との組み合

わせである。この関係は鏡が抱える二者間 ( 虚像 / 実像、明 / 暗、物 / 空間 ) の境界面、あるいは接点とのあいだで、光の量と質の変化がかもし出す空間の 質の変貌と、形態の生成と消滅を捉えていくことにある。それは光の質と形態

が、刻々と変化する事象を飽きることなく見つづける力 ( 精神 ) を捉えること である。

二つ目は、人工光 ( ブラックライト ) と蛍光を含んだ物質 ( 紙、糸、絵具 ) と

の組み合わせである。この関係は人工の光を吸収した物質そのものが自ら光を 発し、物と空間の境界や環境を形成する様々な表面や肌理、緑の現象を、身体 の奥深くに直感した精神を思う事である。二つの事柄、見つづける力と現象を

直感する精神が、物事の本質「見ること」へと繋がって行くものと考えている。 光の作品は、空間と物の境界、接点におけるライトドローイングである。そ

れは物質的な存在ではなく、ただただ光の存在であり、また非存在として確固 として〈在る〉光を認識することでもある。

「見ること・・・」を先に自然の営みの強さと美しさを感じるが、その営みの 意味を探る必要がありのかという思いを、私は時折り感じさせられる。

池田啓子は 5 年ほど前から光を素材とした作品を展開してきた。光を当てる

部分の形や色、大きさを変えられるピン・スポットを用いた作品。壁に取り付 けた鏡に自然光を反射させ、壁の上に光と影による造形をほどこした作品。ブ

ラックライト ( 不可視光線 ) を光源とし、展示空間にぴんと張ったひもを発光 させた作品、など。

今回の展示は、地下空間という条件を生かしてブラックライトを用いたもの

である。展示室に入るとまず、光の粒が床一面に浮き上がって見える。コンク リートを流し込んだ床の上に針が展示室中央の柱部分を除いて方形に等間隔で 立てて並べられている。それぞれの針の先に、ブラックライトの光を吸収して ほのかに発光する小さな光の粒がある。近くで見ると、この発光体はパンチで 穴を開けるときにできる円形のケント紙が針の上にバランスを保ちながら載せ られている。そのため、光の粒には緊張感も漂う。

展示室の壁に沿って歩きながらしばらく周囲から眺めていると、次第に細か

いところに気付いてくる。柱による影や展示室入り口から入る光の影響を受け て、発光体の光の強さが部分的に異なつて見える。試しに作家の立ち会いのも と、隣接する部屋の照明をできる限り消してもらう。すると、以前は暗いと感 じていた展示室内も、実は意外と光の影響を受けていたことがわかった。作家 によれば、これまでの作品においても外部からの光を完全に遮断することはな いという。一見すると池田の作品は、光による視覚的効果そのもののおもしろ さが際立っている。しかし、単純にトリッキーな効果を見せるならば、むしろ 外部からの光を避けるはずだ。彼女の関心は作品の造形的要素に作用する環境 にも向けられているのだ。

シンプルな素材を用いた鮮やかな造形。目を凝らすうちに微妙な光の変化を

感じるところがこの作品の魅力の一つである。

近年、光を素材とした作品を制作してきた。制作を通し、「見ること」につい

て問いかけるなか、見えない物を見ようとする意識とは、見えないものを感じ それを思い考え、あるいは思い考えたものを感じることではないかと考えてい る。

今回、作品” LINE of LIGHT” は日常の微かな光の変化の中で、素材がかも

し出す生成と消滅を捉え続けた。その時、 刻刻と異なる事象を見つづける力が、

「見ること」ではないかと感じた。

In recent years, I have created works in which light is the material. In these works, I have raised questions about “seeing”, out of the belief that in attempting to see the invisible, we become able to feel and consider what cannot be seen, or feel what we become able to consider.

In this work, “Line of Light”, with its constantly changing faint light, I continue to explore the ideas of genesis and extinction which are produced by the material. It seems to me that the power of watching a steadily changing phenomenon is in fact “seeing”.

神ならぬ人が、それでも宇宙を創造しようと試みてきたのが、芸術家の系譜で あるという見方も成り立つのではないだろうか。

当初、それは、教会における天地創造の壁面や曼荼羅図といった宗教的説話や 神が創造してきた宇宙の図解という仮の姿を見せていた。教義から大きく外れ ることは出来ない、という制約はあるものの、芸術家達の想像力は人々に宇宙 制作の方法を実感させる、という途方もないことを成し遂げてきたのである。 宗教的な教義からの解放が、近代における芸術の最重要事項の一つであるとす るならば、同時にそのことは、「宇宙の創造」という大きな命題も宗教的議題

から離れて、ひとりの個人、ひとりの芸術家の拳中の掛けられた、ということ をも意味するのだろう。

20 世紀を代表する作家の一人、ルチオ・フォンタナは、 「宇宙の創造」という

大きな課題に対して、《空間概念》と称された作品群で、そのことに挑み、カ ンヴァスという二次元の世界をナイフで切り裂くことによって三次元の世界を

「絵画」にもたらした。また、カンヴァスに穴を空ける試みを始めたばかりの 1952 年、フォンタナはイタリアのあるテレビ局で、穴を空けたカンヴァスか

ら通過する光を暗くしたスタジオ内に投影することによる実験映像を試みる。 実にナイーヴな方法であるが、カンヴァスをゆっくり回転させて宇宙を再現す るような試みであったらしい。ことによると、フォンタナの《空間概念》の本 質はカンヴァス作品にあるのではなく、このようなパフォーマンスにあったと 考えることができるかもしれない。

池田啓子は近年、ガラスや鏡を利用して光を壁に投影するような作品を試みて きた。これまで私はそれらの作品を視覚的な錯誤を利用した、近代的な意味で の絵画という概念に対する疑義提示のように捉えてきた。それとは少し異なる

意見を持ち始めたのは、2001 年の CASO での個展「LIGHT/FORM」である。 人工的な投影による光の造形だけではなく、 自然光をも利用した池田の作品は、 外界との交感を示唆するような要素を垣間見せていた。また、何よりも大きな 展示空間に、個々の作品を現わすというより、空間全体を一個の作品世界とし て構築させようとする作家の強い意志を感じさせていたのである。

今回の新作では、外界との交感を直接的に示すユニットが、展示室全体を占め る予定である。展示空間に入り込む外界の光線を反射しながら同時に影を生じ させる無数の小さなユニットは、全体で一つの世界を創造しながら、我々の生 存している場所が、この宇宙の鼓動とともに在る、ということを実感させるよ うな表情を見せることになるそれらのユニットは、陽の傾きと共に壁面との明 度差がなくなり、まるで生き物が身を潜めるように、静かな空間を生成するだ ろう。このように、見る度に異なる表情を現し出す池田の新作は、地球が宇宙 空間をゆっくりと自転していることを示しながら、同時に、そのシステムは全 体として、池田啓子による宇宙の再創造となる筈である。フォンタナが先のパ フォーマンスで宇宙空間の構造を具現化していたように、池田の作品は地球が 宇宙空間の中の在ることを静かに表現するからである。そして、この作品世界 を通じて、我々は宇宙と対峙することも可能となる。

Would that the universe were as free as god, for then it might be broken and tossed aside.

A free universe that did just as it pleased might then be created apart and anew --Omar Khayyam, Rubaiyat People, despite their inability to become gods, have long attempted to create the universe. This is a tendency that might be the root of the artist’s family tree.

Initially, the urge was evident in the ephemeral form of religious legend and diagrams of the god-made universe as seen in murals depicting the creation of heaven and earth in Christian churches and mandala in Hindu or Buddhist temples. Restricted from staying too far from religious doctrine, artists of old used their creative powers to help people realize how the universe had been produced-an accomplishment that was nothing short of extraordinary.

If we can agree that liberation from religious doctrine is one of the most important issues in art of the modern era, then it must also be said that the far-reaching impulse to “create the universe” now lies outside the realm of a religious agenda and in the hands of the individual-the individual artist.

Lucio Fontana, one of the representative ar tists of the 20th centur y, addressed the subject in a series of works titled “Concetto Spaziale” (Spatial Concept). By cutting and ripping the two-dimensional world of the canvas with a knife, Fontana elevated the “painting” into the three-dimensional world. Further, in 1952, around the time that he had begun to experiment with making holes in the canvas, Fontana creating an experimental film for an Italian TV program by passing light into the darkened studio through holes in the canvas. Though the method was rather primitive, this was

apparently Fontana’s way of trying to reproduce the slowly revolving universe with the canvas. It would be accurate to suggest that the essence of Fontana’s “Concetto Spaziale” lies not so much in the works on canvas, but rather in this TV performance.

In recent years, Ikeda Keiko has been experimenting with works that project light onto the wall using glass and mirrors. Until now, it was my understanding that three works included a cer tain amount of doubt regarding modern-style paintings that make use of techniques like optical illusion.

I began to revise my opinion with the solo exhibition, “Light/Form”, that was held at CASO in 2001. It wasn’t merely that the light sculptures were created with artificial projections, but that Ikeda, who also used natural light, offered us a glimpse of elements that hinted at a sympathetic relationship with the outside world. And more than trying to display each of the individual works in the large exhibition space, it was evident that she had every intention of constructing a single work out of the entire space.

Ikeda’s newest work, which uses reflective units that place an even greater emphasis on a rapport with the outside world, has been designed specifically to occupy the entire exhibition room. Together, the numerous small devices, which reflect the rays of light that seep into the space from outside and simultaneously produce shadows, create a unified world. At the same time, the work has the function of encouraging us to realize that the place we inhabit is at one with the heartbeat of the universe. The units, which create forms that resemble sharp creases out of the strong, midday sunlight that hits them, produce a tranquil space. It is as if they are living creatures concealing their bodies as the slant of the sun changes along with the degree of brightness on the walls’ surface

In this way, Ikeda’s new work, which takes a different from each time you look at it, recalls the slow rotation of the earth in the universe. And at the time, the system as a whole is integrated into Ikeda Keiko’s recreation of the universe. Just as Fontana’s performance served as the embodiment of the universe’s structure, Ikeda’s work quietly expresses the fact that the earth occupies a space in the universe. And through this world of art, it becomes possible for us to face the universe.

本人はまじめに「見た」と思っていた。これは「見る」ことに含まれる本質的 な曖昧さへの問いかけであり、曖昧さを持つことの問いでもある。そして作品 の一片を見いだすことは、「見る」努力なしではありえないのかもしれない。

作品の本質とは、ただ見ただけでは見いだせるものではなく、見る側の知識

や体験を持って、作品と対面することで触れ合うことが出来るのである。さら に「見る」ことの曖昧さも明らかにしてくれる。このことは、逆に見られる物 からの発信を、私たちが如何に受けとめる環境の場を整えているかである。

見られる物からの発信を受けとめること = 見るということは、常に曖昧なバ

ランスの上に成り立っているのかも知れない。

To Take a Careful Look Very often people pass by a work of art without showing any interest in it at all. At other times, an individual may sincerely think that he or she has taken a careful look at some piece of artistic work. To take a careful look is to question the essential vagueness that is involved in the action of “taking a careful look” If one discovers the actual essence of a specific work then we can say that this action cannot be accomplished without any real effort.

One cannot identify the true meaning of a work by merely looking at it. Instead one must interpret the work based on both the knowledge and experience of the person who is looking at it. Furthermore, the ambiguity of seeing can be clarified. In other words, we must be ready to adjust our surroundings to accept the artist’s intended message.

Receiving the message of the artist’s work, which means to take a careful look, means to always stand on the ambiguous side of the balance between one’s perception and artistic expression.
