When the Dust Settles 3 年余り前、私は絶えず祈るというコンセプトに関する研究の一環として、ギリシャ正教会 の僧院を訪ねた。食事の時間中に、修道僧の一人が問いの含まれたテキストの一部を読んだ。 どの時点で原罪は、生命の基本構造に 入ってくるのだろうか、という問いである。 この問いはそれ以来私の中に残った。原罪というキリスト教の概念が気にかかったからでは なく、むしろ、生命 を形成する物質の巨大なスープの中から、一体厳密にどの時点で、生 命が生じるのだろうと不思議に思いはじめ たからだ。 私は塵を基本物質のメタファとして見はじめた。塵はどこにでも在り、見えたりまた見えな かったりする。ロケッ トが塵のサンプルを集めるのに、宇宙の彼方に打ち上げられ、科学 者たちは、微細な「神の粒子 ( ヒギンズ粒子 )」を巨大な粒子加速器で探したり、ロンドン の地下鉄の中で「地下鉄の塵」が積もってゆくと、乗客の健康に影響 するのではないかと 恐れたりしている。どんな物でも 2、3 日そのままにしておくと塵は、どんどん増えるのに 快適な場所をみつける。塵は太陽の光の下で漂っているのを見ることができるし、キリスト 教の葬儀の折の「灰 は灰に 塵は塵に」という祈祷の言葉にあるように、私たちは塵からき て塵に帰る。 そのようなことから、数年間にわたる自身の呼吸の痕跡をシステマティックに描く仕事の後、 秩序立てて絵画に アプローチするという制限を措くときがきたと感じ、私を捉えはじめた このとらえ所のない「塵」を描く方法を 探して、もう一度直感的に制作をしようと考えた。 「When the Dust Settles」とは、この探求でのはじめての成果である。

When the Dust Settles Over three years ago I visited a Greek Orthodox Christian monastery as part of my research into the concept of continuous prayer. During meal time one of the monks read from a text in which a question was posed: at what point does original sin enter the basic building blocks of life?

The question has remained with me ever since, not so much because of the Christian concept of original sin, but much more so because I began to wonder at what point exactly does life begin in the vast soup of matter that forms the building blocks of life.

I began to see dust as a metaphor for basic matter. Dust is everywhere, it is visible and invisible, rockets are sent out to deep space to collect samples of it, scientists search for the miniscule “God particle” in a giant particle collider, the build up of “tube-dust” on the London Underground is feared to have detrimental effects on passenger’ s health. Leave any object for a couple of days and dust will find a comfortable place to multiply. It can be seen floating in sunlight, and as the words from the Christian funeral rite go, “ashes to ashes, dust to dust” , we come from dust and we return to dust.

So, after working systematically over several years tracing my breathing patterns I felt that it was time to leave the restraints of a systematic approach to painting behind and once again work intuitively in a search to find a way to paint this elusive “Dust” that had begun to obsess me.

テオリア、須彌山からアトス山への想像の巡礼 私がイギリスで美大生であった頃、アメリカ人のカトリック教神父トーマス・マート ンの 著書に出会った。ケンタッキー州にあるゲッセマニ修道院の彼の独房には、彼の 友人であっ た画家アド・ラインハルトから贈られた小さな黒い絵画が掛かっていたと いう話しを読ん だことを覚えている。黒いミニマル抽象絵画の前で一人祈るマートン のイメージは、以来 鮮明に私の中に記憶された。 およそ二年前私は、最初の一週間は強烈な痛みがあり約一ヶ月入院した。その一ヶ月 の間 に自分自身について多くを学んだが、最も私自身に残ったことは、我慢できない 痛みに対 する究極の反応であり、それは祈るという事であった。私は 30 年ほどにも わたって精神修 養について学び、訓練を受けてきたので、祈りは特に私にとって新し いことではない。し かし、この祈りはこれまでとはまったく異なる経験であり、何かもっ と抽象的なことであっ た ...。そこで私は、マートンの独房に掛かったラインハルトの 絵画について再び考え始めた。 2004 年の個展「インドラの網」以来、私の想像の中でこれまでとは異なる聖なる山 に登り、 それが新しい一連の絵画の焦点となるようにしてみたいと考えていた。私は 次の山を見つ けたと今感じており、祈りがどのようなかたちに自分には見えるのかを 確かめたかったの である。テサロニケ人への第一の手紙 (5:17) においてパウロは、朗 読者達に「絶えず祈り なさい」と説く。この大変に有名な唱句は、14 世紀ギリシャ、アトス山の正教会僧院でヘシュ カスト修道士による絶え間ないイエスの祈りの諳誦の ための基礎になった。私は視覚的に 同意義な絶え間ない祈りとして、普遍的なキリス ト教の祈りの言葉である「主よ、憐れみ たまえ キリスト、憐れみたまえ」というテキ ストを使うことに決めた。 ドローイング「Silent Sound」はパリンプセストのようなもので、消された層が連続 して透 けて見え、しばしば祈りにつきものの混乱や反響を作りだしているように表面 を左右して いる。 「Open Book」は、色彩に独特の深みをもたらし、重厚な絵画に仕 上げるべく液状の 琥珀を混ぜた油絵具が分厚く重なっている絵画である。テキストは 絵画の内や外から現れ てはまた溶け込んでゆく。それはちょうどあのような修行をし た誰もが知っているように ちょうどこんな境地になるのだ。 トーマス・マートンは一体どんなふうに感じただろう。

Theoria, an imaginary pilgrimage from Meru to Athos When I was an art student at college in England I came across the writings of the American Catholic Priest Thomas Merton. I remember reading that he was given a small black painting by his friend the painter Ad Reinhardt, which he hung in his cell in the Abby of Gethsemani in Kentucky. This image of Merton praying in his cell in front of a black minimal abstract painting has remained vividly with me ever since.

About two years ago I spent a month in hospital, the first week in intense pain. I learnt a lot about myself in that month but what stays with me most was my ultimate reaction to pain I felt I couldn’t bear, I prayed. Prayer is not particularly new to me, I have studied and trained in spiritual practice for something like 30 years but this prayer was a totally different experience, something much more abstract...and I began to start thinking about Reinhardt’s painting in Merton’s cell once again.

Since my exhibition “Indra’s Net” in 2004 I have wanted to climb another spiritual mountain in my imagination and let it become the focus for a new set of paintings. I wanted to see how the shape of prayer would look to me now that I felt I had found my next mountain.

In his first letter to the Thessalonians (5:17) Paul exhorts his readers to “pray continually” and in 14th century Greece this very famous verse became the foundation for continual recitation of the Jesus Prayer by the Hesychast monks of the Orthodox Church in their monasteries on Mount Athos. I decided to use the text of the universal Christian prayer “Kyrie eleison Christe eleison” as a visual equivalent of continuous prayer.

The “Silent Sound” drawings are like palimpsests, the erased under layers continue to show through and influence the surface, creating the confusion and echoes that often accompany prayer. The “Open Book” paintings are in thick layers of oil paint mixed with liquefied amber to give a particular depth to the colour and heaviness to the paint. The text is seen as emerging and remerging in and out of the paint, and as anyone who has tried to follow such a discipline knows - this is just how it feels.

「インドラの網」 大洋から浮かび上がった世界の中心に、伝説上名高い須弥山（＊ルビ＊しゅみせん）がそ びえ、 「33 の神々」という天国の頂上には、インドラ（帝釈天）の住まいがある。すべての 建物が金でできていて、地面は綿のように柔らかな「美の光景」という町に「インドラの勝 利の宮殿」が建っている。その宮殿内部には特別な部屋があり、天井には四方八方無限にひ ろがる不思議な素晴らしい網がかかっている。きらきらと輝く糸のそれぞれの結び目には美 しい宝玉がついていて、また個々の宝玉は他の宝玉と無限に反射し合っている。 この「インドラの網」のイメージは、その最も意味深い識見の一つに対して視覚的な説明 を大乗仏教に与えている。すなわち、すべてのものは究極的に同じであり、すべてのものは 互いに浸透し合うということだ。この「重々無尽」の思想を表象するのにインドラの網の物 語が使われた華厳経を根本とする仏教の宗派は、7 世紀頃中国においてその頂点をなした。 それが後に華厳宗として知られるようになった。 言葉あるいは絵画によって華厳教の概念をここで説明しようとするものではないが、私の 仕事が鑑賞されるにあたってのある背景を多少とも提示することにした。華厳教の思想は、 知的作業と修行の両面からも理解することが難しいが、昨年より興味をもったこうした事柄 から「インドラの網」シリーズは描かれた。 サイモン・フィッツジェラルド 2004

Indra's Net At the centre of the world rising from a great ocean stands the fabled Mount Sumeru and on its summit in the Heaven of the 33 Gods is the abode of the God Indra. In the City of Beautiful Vision where all of the buildings are made of gold and the ground is soft like cotton stands Indra's Palace of Victory. Within here is a very special room and high up in this room is a wonderful net that is mysteriously hung so that it stretches out on all sides into infinity. At each intersection of its shining threads is a beautiful jewel and in each one of these jewels is reflected the infinite number of all the other jewels.

This image of Indra's Net has provided Mahayana Buddhism with a visual illustration for one of it's most profound insights: all things are ultimately the same and all things interpenetrate and contain each other. The school of Buddhism which based its thinking on the Avatamsaka Buddhist Sutra where the story of Indra's Net is used to represent the doctrine of interdependent co-origination and inter-penetration reached it's zenith at around the 7th Century in China where it became known as the Hua-yen school.

It is not my intent here to try to explain Hua-yen Buddhist concepts through words or illustrate them by painting but only to set out some kind of background against which my work could be viewed. Hua-yen thought is difficult to understand both intellectually and through practice but it was while fascinated with this over the past year that the series "Indra's Net" on exhibition was painted.
