Message From The Founder

Dear Supporter,

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the FutureSense Foundation Annual Report for 2022-2023.

In the past year, the Foundation has experienced remarkable growth, increasing our net resources for charitable activities from £ 83,300 to £ 311,900. Having allowed an 80% increase in our support for rural overseas communities that we work with. While this is a fantastic achievement, we remain aware of the challenges caused by the global pandemic and are therefore committed to upholding a six-month financial surplus to ensure uninterrupted support for our mission and communities we serve.

Our values serve as the cornerstone of our work, guiding us to uphold our mission that we are passionate about. Always acting with empathy, bringing energy and integrity to our work, and continuously seeking innovative solutions to the challenges around us.

Reflecting on the incredible journey of 2022-2023, I am excited to share some key highlights from our global initiatives.

In the past year, we expanded our operations to include a new hub in Panama, extending our reach to serve more communities in need. Our efforts in seven countries yielded significant results, with our work now supporting over 11,000 primary and secondary school learners and 15,000 community members. We are committed to supporting each individual we work with in their aspirations for a better future for themselves and their communities. We are proud of our young learners reporting increased pride in their own learning and increased confidence in their own abilities. Allowing them to be more curious and seek out bigger dreams and aspirations for themselves and their communities.

Our support for the overseas learners and communities would not be possible without our committed international students travelling out to support and help deliver our programmes. Last year, we had the pleasure of hosting 1,500 international students working alongside our in-country teams, leaving their handprints on the world and growing as Global Citizens. To celebrate their hard work and commitment to our mission, a Global Citizenship Conference was arranged, where teams came together from all over the world to share their thoughts and experiences. It was truly inspiring to witness the exchange of ideas and perspectives, fostering a stronger sense of unity across borders and showcasing the impact of our collective work.

Looking ahead to 2023-2024, our focus remains on engaging more students in our programmes and extending our reach to new areas and communities where new partnerships for positive change can be forged. As we embrace the opportunities of the coming year, the Foundation will continue to work tirelessly, to leave a lasting positive impact on the world.

We are deeply grateful for your support and joining us on this mission. Together, we can contribute to a better world.

Addressing the Education Crisis

At FutureSense Foundation, we put learning before teaching, and upbringing and the development of key life skills before exam metrics.

We stand the local community as partners and allies. Planning programme activities with local with together educators based on learner needs.

Our activities build bridges and life skills through collaboration and human to human connections.

THE LOCAL CHALLENGES

COST OF ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION

LOW RETENTION LEVELS ?

LACKING RESOURCES

Our Support, focuses on providing:

1. Access to education and a conducive learning environment

SOCIAL & LINGUISTIC BARRIERS ? ? ROTE-LEARNING

INSUFFICIENT STAFFING IN SCHOOLS

2. Learning through fun and educational workshops

3. Supporting educators with professional development opportunities

Our activities focus on igniting curiosity and actively engaging learners in fun and interactive workshop where individual experiences and reflections form part of a journey of discovery.

Our SupplementaryEducation approach

LOW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS

We use arts such as drawing, music and drama in our language learning. Upholding an environment where visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners are all challenged and provided with support where they can see, hear and get involved in the action. This approach helps ensure everyone has an opportunity to learn; but more importantly to start understanding their own unique learning style. Helping them develop lifelong learning capabilities and understanding. Ensuring we ignite curiosity, confidence and problem-solving skills in our learners to enable them to find their passion continue on their journey to meeting their aspirations for a betterfuture.

ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23 13

Access to education and a conducive learning environment

In FY2022-2023, we provided over 471 primary school learners from low income families across Cambodia and India with scholarships to ensure access to education. Ensuring all learners progressed in their studies and were able to graduate to the next grade bythe end oftheir academicyear.

IMPACT

In India, one of our partner schools was risking closure as their student numbers drastically decreased during Covid-19, as many low income families could not afford paying tuition for their children. We believe, that all children should have access to education, and no child should have to worry about the financial burden of it on their family

To support the school, the learners and their families, FutureSense Foundation initiated a scholarship programme to prevent learners from dropping out from school and enabling new admissions and re-enrollment in education. Supporting families that lost their jobs due to the pandemic or suffer from job insecurities, and families that have several children but cannot afford to send them all to school. Enabling the learners to focus on their studies and removing some of the burden of providing for their child from the parent’s shoulders.

We are proud of all the scholarship learners as they have all engaged with their education and progressed from one grade to another Showing that sometimes we all just need a little help in accessing opportunities where we can let our skills and commitment shine.

“The scholarship has been a game-changer for our family. It’s not just about financial assistance. It is about the opportunity it provides for our child’s education. Thanks to this our child can continue learning without worrying about the financial burden. It is a blessing that ensures our child’s future remains bright. We are immensely grateful for this support. It’s a lifeline for many families like ours.”

14 ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23

In Tanzania our team transformed the worn out classrooms of 360 learners into safe, fun and engaging learning spaces where holes in the roofs and walls were patched and filled with colours and educational murals.

IMPACT

It is widely known that physical spaces significantly influences our behavior and (academic) performance. The murals aimed to foster creativity and promote imagination while creating a space where learners could feel like they belonged and wanted to spend time in, creating a positive and uplifting atmosphere. The educational murals also serve as visual aids reinforcing the curricula for the majority of the population that are visual learners.

The efforts of our teams paid off as the teachers, principals, learners and their parents confirmed our objectives of the classroom transformations were achieved.

“I never knew bugs & animals could be so cool until we started learning about them and their habitats”

9 year old learner, Social & Financial Awareness workshop

“For the younger ones, it’s like magic. Their attention is drawn to the walls, and this has significantly improved their focus during class. It’s amazing to see them so engrossed in the lessons now.”

Teacher for grade 1

“The colourful artwork creates a welcoming and stimulating environment. It’s not just about academics; it’s about the holistic development of the child. They are more receptive to learning, and you can see the joy in their faces as they enter the classroom.”

Head Teacher

“I noticed an immediate change in my child’s enthusiasm for school. The vibrant murals have transformed the classroom into a captivating space, and my child now eagerly participates in lessons, absorbing information in a way that wasn’t happening before.”

Learning through fun educational workshops

Across all our 7 hubs our educational workshops heavily focused on three core areas; English, STEAM and Climate Action. Our workshops utilise creative games and problem solving activities to ignite curiosity, foster reflection and provide the learners with an opportunityfor a supported environment of learning and discovery.

We dedicated over 30,000h to support nearly 10,000 learners with workshops across these 3 areas. As part of the workshops we collect nearly3000 liters oftrash and plant 2935 trees and 2veggie gardens togetherwith the local learners.

“They [FSF] play games which makes learning fun. They make the students feel welcomed and easy to join in. In Cambodia the goal traditionally is only the lesson.”

We are committed to supporting local teachers, who are the facilitators of learning and development for the localyouth.

Teachers often ask us how to better engage their student and how to manage the classroom so the students do not get too rowdy and hard to handle.

We provided 10 teachers with dedicated and personalised professional development opportunities focussing on developing skills in classroom management through experiential and inquiry-based learning, becoming more confident in teaching English, facilitating STEAM sessions and talking about ClimateAction.

The three pillars ofwellbeing: Physical, Social and Emotional

We recognise that wellbeing is not just about physical health but also about having social skills and a community around you that is supportive, and being able to self-regulate emotions and overcome challenges. We work to ensure that our learners can be an active part of that community for themselves and for others. With much of youths’ lives being spent online or in competitive and stressful settings like the education system, we believe it is crucial that on top of physical health promotion activities we focus on learning healthysocial skills, stress mitigation practices and emotional regulation practices.

VEGGIE GARDENS

We involved 615 local students in Tanzania in a 24h gardening project that saw us make veggie gardens for 2 primary schools. The veggie gardens typically grow collard greens, spinach, pumpkin leaves and cabbage to help supplement the lunch meals for the school. Primary schools in Tanzania are free and offerthe learners with lunch. The lunch food is typically sponsored bythe parents meaning that the quantity and nutritional value of the food is often insufficient for the learners. Due to this we help local schools set up veggie gardens to supplement the meals with healthy vegetables while providing the local learners with gardening skills that theycan utilise at home as well.

“The students are learning to take care of themselves and use skills at home –like gardening and skills for life.”

Financial Statement 2022-23

We are very pleased that the Foundation has increased its net resources available for charitable activities from £ 83,300 to £ 311,900 during the year. Allowing the Foundation to have increased its vital support in rural and disadvantaged communities across the world with over 80%.

While the work of the Foundation and the increase of financial resources has been significant the financial damage caused by Covid-19 lockdowns still holds a shadow over us and the world, requiring continued actions and repairs. The Foundation therefore is continuing to build its reserves with an annual surplus of £ 47,200 recorded in this year. Ensuring a sufficient reserve of a minimum of 6 months, to safeguard the continuance our operations and support for our partner communities should the world be affected by any new global pandemics or disasters affecting our income streams.

Looking Ahead:

Strategic Plan 2023-26

We are thrilled to be developing a long-term strategic plan that will enable us to build upon the tremendous growth we’ve experienced in the past year.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, our Foundation has seen a surge in support from students, thanks in part to the UK Government Turing Scheme’s partnership with Challenges Abroad. This will enable the Foundation to have substantially greater support for delivering its programmes but also to develop capability and capacity through the increased financial contributions from the group companies.

Over the three year period, we are looking at our income growing to over £500,000 to enable us to meet our three goals:

Achieve financial sustainability, build our reserves.

Build organisational capacity and capability

Develop our programme management capability

As we move forward, our strategic plan will prioritise strengthening our in-country capabilities to support our growth and continue to identify new partnerships and projects that will help us expand our global presence. We are looking to expand our presence both in the countries where we currently operate but also exploring new destinations to reach more communities.
