Message From The Founder It is my pleasure to present the FutureSense Foundation Annual Report for the two years 2018-19 and 2019-20. This period has seen us face the greatest crisis of a generation with the spread of Coronavirus as a global pandemic. What started as a health crisis in early 2020, soon took the shape and form of the worst economic crisis particularly for those from low-income countries and communities. The impact on the education of children from disadvantaged backgrounds has been immense, reversing the progress made over the past several decades. Reports have suggested that millions of children will drop out of education permanently.

As I write this message for our Annual Report, over a year after the start of the pandemic, schools remain closed in several of our hubs and with many children having no access to any form of technology they have received no education for over 12 months. Some of them who can access some form of technology, generally a basic smart phone, have only received lessons through WhatsApp messaging. There is no doubt that learning for these children has been severely impacted and the impact will be felt across an entire generation of children who will struggle to break through the poverty cycle.

For us as a Foundation, we have seen our income reduce by more than 50% and have worked through this period with a much-reduced team across all hubs. Our focus has been on supporting our partners and communities. We have delivered over a 1000 learning packs to children in their homes due to school closures, and wherever possible, have taken education to the doorstep for children. At the same time, it has been important that our own teams remain safe and I am glad to report that everyone is well despite a rise of community spread in some of the countries where we work.

Prior to the pandemic, our focus had been on sustainability and we had a number of successful initiatives to raise environmental awareness across the hubs where we work. As you read this Annual Report you will get a feel for the momentum of activities that was beginning to see an impact in the communities where we work with active waste management, community clean up days and focused tree planting initiatives.

Over this period we have also made great progress with our Conversational English lessons, STEM workshops, focused drive towards better health and hygiene with the installation of hand washing stations across partner schools and ensuring all children had access to clean drinking water. Gender equality has been a strong theme across all our programmes and initiatives. We have also, with the help of our university partners, delivered programmes focused on women’s health and undertaken research to get a better understanding of practices and awareness in rural Nepal that has helped shape our programmes within the community.

We are extremely grateful to all our volunteers and supporters who have made all these achievements possible. I dedicate this report to all of them and certainly hope the experience gained working on our programmes has had an impact on every one of our volunteers, and will last a lifetime.

Our Covid Response: Continuing to Safeguard the Future for the Most Vulnerable While the Coronavirus itself did not discriminate against the rich or poor, everyone was at risk and equally impacted by the illness and its effects on health. However, the impact of the virus and the accompanying measures put in place to control it was felt most by those from vulnerable backgrounds, who lacked basic facilities and were hardest hit by the economic consequences resulting from national and local lockdowns.

While over 1.5 billion children were affected by school closures across the world, those from low-income countries and communities felt the impact the most due to the lack of remote learning capabilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a devastating impact on the charity sector. Again, small charities like us, who rely on individual fundraisers and the support of our international volunteers to help deliver our programmes, have been most affected. Almost all our international staff also returned to their home countries to avoid getting caught in the travel restrictions. So, with a much-reduced team borne out of these circumstances, and being forced to keep our costs down in line with reduced fundraising, we needed to respond to the crisis.

In these trying circumstances, our in-country teams had to be innovative and be extremely resilient to realign to a world with Covid and meet the immediate needs of the communities we work with. We adapted our way of working to the new needs and restrictions. We decided to focus our limited capacity to continue supporting the learning of students in the local communities. Most schools in the countries where we work were closed for three to six months of the year, with children having little access to education and extremely limited remote learning capabilities.

Supporting the teachers and students became our top priority. We focused most of 2020 on developing and distributing physical education boxes to students who lacked access to online remote learning material. We also used the time to work with the teachers to help them develop skills and be more effective in their teaching methods as children began returning to schools.

Quality Education: Helping Students Learn Education is a foundation for all of us in life.

It is a building block for the future. Despite the importance of education, its quality is decreasing globally. As per a report by the UNDP approximately 60% of students in the world are not learning enough to meet basic learning requirements.

Lacking resources, rote learning and non-conducive learning environments all contribute to the problem and the decrease in quality. Students are also continuously forced to battle with challenges posed by gender roles and socio-economical disadvantages of their families and communities.

What we are doing We support students and teachers to improve the quality of education across 30 schools in the countries where we work. We work to increase student engagement and improve their learning outcomes through supplementary education. We also support teachers, with Teacher Training sessions to enhance their skills and ensure a lasting improvement of the quality of education.

Most of the students and teachers we work with are from low income families, located in rural communities across the world. Many of the teachers are either not qualified or under-qualified while still teaching large, often mixed grade classes across a variety of subjects - resulting in the teaching often being based on rote learning. We therefore support the learning through activities that are experience based and focus on breaking up the rote learning style to ensure active participation of the students.

Clean Water & Sanitation: Preventing Illness and Promoting Health & Wellbeing Water is not only important for drinking and cooking as a source of hydration for our bodies, it is also important for protection against illness and disease.

Currently over 2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water or safe toilet facilities. In areas where we work, many homes and schools fall into this category and lack access to drinking water or adequate toilet facilities. In some cases, they even lack access to running water for hand washing.

Schools can have several hundreds or even thousands of students and rely on only a few toilets. They often have a single tap for handwashing for all to share. Inadequate infrastructure, scarcity of water itself and the remoteness of the water sources often further complicate the situation.

While limited access is an ongoing issue, so is poor knowledge of how to use the clean water and how to avoid contamination of water sources. Many of the people living in the rural communities where we work lack an understanding of the consequences of poor hygiene and contaminated water, and how this can affect their personal short and long-term health. The understanding also often does not extend to a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of human, environmental and animal health and how water, by being a shared source, can impact all, with consequences affecting all three.

What we are doing We work in rural communities in partnership with local schools and health centres to reach students and adult community members, delivering awareness raising workshops. We also support our beneficiaries, undertaking small infrastructure improvement projects to enable access to clean running water for drinking and to maintain basic hygiene. We believe access and awareness must be coupled to have a sustainable solution that can ensure prevention of illnesses and spread of diseases.

Our workshops focus on topics such as handwashing & personal hygiene, female hygiene, hydration, water purification and prevention of contamination, water scarcity, food hygiene and water safety.

All our activities are based on local needs and settings, and seek to connect the activity with the people’s everyday life.

Good Health & Wellbeing: Promotion, Awareness and Prevention Good health and wellbeing is vital for development and a prosperous life. It is the combination of physical health, social, intellectual and emotional wellbeing. To achieve good health and wellbeing an individual must at a minimum have all their physiological needs met, their social needs met and have access to quality care and support.

In the communities we work in, many families live below the poverty line, leaving them at risk of not having their physiological needs met, such as not having adequate shelter or food. In many cases, one or both parents may have relocated for work to better support the family financially, leading children to be vulnerable from the lack of safety and social needs usually provided by parents.

Being cared for by elderly relatives or by their teachers in low-staffed boarding schools can significantly affect the children. Living in low-resource communities where the

conditions are rarely ideal and prevention of illness and disease may not be possible, quality care and support becomes increasingly important.

Unfortunately access to health care for physical and mental ailments are often located far away from the individuals in need. The facilities often lack resources and specialized staffing to support more complex conditions, leaving not just the individual but the whole community vulnerable and exposed to the spread of illness.

According to UNDP, every 2 seconds someone aged 30-70 dies from a non-communicable disease, while every 24 seconds someone dies from a traffic accident. 7 million die yearly from pollution and even more are suffering from mental health challenges related to mental illness, substance abuse, a history of being abused (over 33% of women have experienced abuse), exam stress and the pressure to perform well.

What we are doing We work to provide individuals with knowledge and opportunities to lead healthy lives. Our primary focus is on promotion of good health and wellbeing, and prevention of illness and disease., but we also support the access to diagnosis and treatment for individual living in remote rural communities where there are no health clinics. We promote good health & wellbeing by raising awareness. We help individuals identify ways to prevent illness, injury, and emotional distress. We help people learn how to support each other, and to attend to minor incidents and injuries when they arise.

Cross-cutting Themes: Climate Action Climate change is affecting the whole world, but unlike developed and wealthy countries, lower income countries are less resilient and suffer worse consequences. The rural communities of such countries are even more at risk as they often rely on outdoor work such as farming for their livelihoods. Rural communities rarely receive sufficient infrastructural support from the government. As a result, roads to access health care, markets and other necessities are often long, windy and poorly maintained.

Adverse weather and climate patterns make this increasingly dangerous and unsustainable. Increasing the risks for losses in income, health problems and accidents.

In all the rural communities where we work, the waste management infrastructure is lacking. Plastic often ends up in the ocean, on the side of the roads or is burnt.

WWF estimates that 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean every year, while GAIA reports that burning plastic adds 16 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

Increased industrialisation, poor waste management and over-consumption all contribute towards climate change. We see these changes in the seasonal patterns across the world, where rainy seasons bring heavy storms and widespread flooding, and dry seasons bring extreme droughts and uncontrolled forest fires. These extremes are very dangerous on their own but also have cascading effects where floods can cause roads to collapse and houses to be destroyed while also completely cutting off a community’s access to other villages or towns. Droughts on the other hand limit the water supply and are a hotspot for the spreading of illness and disease, while fires further pollute the air. The air quality often reaches extremely unhealthy levels in the communities where we work, calling for the increased need to care for the environment.

Our Solution We recognize the need for everyone to take responsibility and action, to recognize both the benefits and the consequences of our actions.

We have significantly increased our focus on climate action through awareness raising workshops on the topic, and engaging students and community members in practical activities to reduce our carbon footprint and to find creative ways of re-using and recycling material.

Our approach recognizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals and the environment. We therefore also support the efforts of local animal rescue centres to work towards the protection of biodiversity by raising awareness locally and globally of sustainable and ethical tourism that works to conserve the environment and its biodiversity.

As a foundation we have also taken actions across all our hubs to reduce our carbon footprint, by using locally produced goods, banning single-use plastics, replacing short-distance transportation with walking, and recycling and re-using as much of the hub waste as possible.

Cross-cutting Themes: Promoting Gender Equality and Reducing Inequalities Inequalities are multi-dimensional. They exist between nations and within nations. Inequalities can be seen based on educational background, gender, race, religion, economic status, disabilities, age and much more.

Many of the community members we work with come from low-income families, with the children attending lowresource schools. These families are often living in small basic housing in rural communities with low personal and financial security. As a result, students often receive lower quality education and experience a higher drop-out rate.

Boys’ education is often prioritized over girls’ due to the financial limitations, need for domestic work, and traditional gender roles.

With women making up more than half of the population in the countries we work in, achieving gender equality is a vital part of reducing inequalities, eliminating hunger and poverty. Many of the countries we work in have made improvements, but the gap is growing between them and their global peers. The gap between rural and urban communities is also continuing to grow, making the communities we work with increasingly at risk.

Women often experience approximately 30% lower wages than their male peers, and often work in unregistered and unpaid domestic jobs. The gender gaps start already at a young age where girls are often sent to low-resource schools, while boys’ education is prioritised. Making it increasingly hard for the half of the population of the low resource communities to catch up to the rest of the world.

Our Solution To reduce inequalities, access to knowledge and opportunities must exist for all. Enabling everyone to be sustainably self-sufficient.

Recognizing the many nuances of inequality, we work alongside local partners to address them. We work to reduce inequalities by promoting gender equality, to ensure girls’ and women’s position in the communities can be improved. So they can be safe, healthy, and productive members of their communities with an ability to socially and financially support their families to help reduce poverty and hunger.

We work directly in the communities to promote quality education for all, by developing life skills and providing knowledge and opportunities to children, youth and adults.

We work directly with some of the most disadvantaged individuals to help reduce local inequalities and provide them with an opportunity for a better future.

Most often non-governmental organizations get involved with students and teachers to provide physical and financial support in our school. These organizations are out of contact once a certain project is completed. The FutureSense Foundation is different from other organizations because the Foundation works directly with students and delivers workshops and sessions. The FutureSense Foundation supports the students to continue with their programs and projects.

Supplementary Education Programme The Supplementary Education Programme supports over 360 students annually by providing them with free daily supplementary education.

The programme supports children from vulnerable families, often living below the poverty line, in the Battambang region. It is jointly run by FutureSense Foundation and Children’s Action for Development, a local Cambodian NGO. The Cambodian government only offers students with 4 hours of education per day, requiring families to pay if they want additional education for their children. This is a luxury not all families can afford, and therefore increases inequalities in the community.

We work to reduce inequalities and believe everyone should have access to quality education, regardless of their level of income. The programme therefore supports lowincome families who cannot afford additional tuition for their children.

Without supplementary education the students risk falling behind their peers in the government schools and are at risk of dropping out of school at an early age. We work to ensure all students have equal opportunities to succeed in life by providing them with opportunities to learn.

2018-2020 The last two years have been like a rollercoaster ride for the Foundation, starting off with the potential for significant growth in programme delivery and reach, but ending off with a drastic reduction in income and capacity following the global pandemic.

With the help of all our supporters and our dedicated teams we pivoted our approach, being innovative and seeking creative solutions to continue delivering our programmes despite the challenging circumstances.

We are proud and grateful for all the assistance we received that enabled us to continue supporting all our communities living in low income rural areas.
