Our Coldmaster jacket (see pages 40 and 41), the result of a full year of R&D, is just one example of the way we constantly push back the frontiers of research to come up with truly innovative products. Then we go out and road test every piece of equipment we make. Out on the road with other users: that’s how Furygan got started.

We make motorcycling gear because we ride motorcycles every day, just like you – and like our founder, Jacques Segura. That’s what makes Furygan tick. Our credibility is our strong point.

COLLABORATION FURYGAN - VIBA SOUS HAUTE COUTURE

Furygan et Viba conjuguent talent et savoir-faire pour affirmer le caractère de Lara. À travers elle, ils rendent hommage aux femmes qui vivent avec liberté leur passion pour la moto.

Furygan and Viba have shared their know-how to create Lara – a bike with attitude for women who give free rein to their passion for motorcycling.

Yann Bakonyi, à travers Viba, exprime sa sensibilité de constructeur-carrossier. Entre ses mains, le 3-cylindres MV Agusta se libère des contraintes de la série pour devenir le cœur d’une moto réinventée, cousue main, baptisée Lara 800. Furygan lui offre un supplément d’âme via des accessoires uniques. Le blouson Lara Legend Lady, entièrement réalisé à la main dans l’atelier de Nîmes, mêle cuir de maroquinerie et peau traditionnelle de la marque. Il a requis les compétences de 7 personnes pour le patronage, la coupe, l’assemblage... et conjugue élégance et sécurité. Ce modèle bénéficie de pressions personnalisées, gravées au laser, que l’on retrouve sur la pochette unique avec laquelle il s’harmonise. Un accessoire complice qui prend place sur une platine-support usinée dans l’aluminium après prototypage 3D. Un jeu d’écopes gainées de cuir, ayant obligé à développer un nouveau procédé de travail pour éviter toute déformation du damier, et une grille de phare réunissant l’hexagone de Viba et la panthère iconique de Furygan renforcent l’identité de Lara. Une selle, conçue dans 2 cuirs de la sélection Furygan, finalise cette moto exceptionnelle, réalisée en 90 jours.

Designer Yann Bakonyi set up Viba Motor as an outlet for his distinctive flair for bodywork. A three-cylinder MV Agusta shakes off its production-model constraints in his skilled hands to transform into a brand-new, beautifully handcrafted motorcycle: the Lara 800. Furygan amps up the bike’s appeal with some exclusive accessories. Seven people at Furygan pooled their skills (pattern designing, cutting and stitching) to craft the Lara Legend Lady jacket. Entirely handmade in our Nîmes workshop from a blend of premium-grade handbag leather and one of our standard-use hides, this jacket combines safety and style.

Its customized laser-engraved poppers also feature on the matching clutch, which slots into a support machined from aluminium after being 3D printed. We developed a special new technique to make the leather-encased radiator covers so as to avoid any distortion of the squares on the leather. The logos of the two brands – the Viba hexagon and Furygan’s iconic panther – both feature in the design of the front light cover, enhancing the Lara’s one-off look. A saddle made of two different leathers from Furygan’s selection adds an elegant finishing touch to this superb motorcycle, which can be made to order in 90 days.

Haute performance Alan Techer / Les 24 Heures : son Bol d’air À 22 ans, Alan porte les couleurs Furygan, et roule depuis 5 ans à haut niveau, en vitesse (Moto3 en 2012 et 2013 et l’un des meilleurs en CEV Moto2 – le championnat espagnol – depuis 3 saisons), tout en travaillant dans une salle de sport pour gagner sa vie. En mai, lors d’un entraînement avec la Yamaha R6 d’un sponsor, Alan chute, la moto est inutilisable. Alan n’a pas l’argent pour la réparer, mais bénéficie d’un élan de solidarité. Une souscription est lancée et des dizaines d’amis récoltent les 5 000 € nécessaires à la remise en état de la Yamaha. Il a découvert l’endurance en 2015, à l’occasion du Bol d’Or (20e), sur une Yamaha R1 qu’il a ramenée après une chute en la poussant jusqu’au stand. Cette année, il était au départ de ses premières 24 Heures du Mans. Après 3 heures en tête, avec ses 2 coéquipiers, il a hissé la Honda 1000 CBR du team japonais F.C.C TSR à la 3e place. Joli coup d’éclat. Prochain objectif d’Alan : rouler aux 8 Heures de Suzuka, où il espère se faire remarquer par les usines japonaises et continuer sa progression en Grands Prix.

Alan Techer / Forging endurance Alan, 22, wears Furygan and has competed in high-level racing for the past five years (he entered the Moto3 championship in 2012 and 2013, and has been a frontrunner in the CEV Moto2 Spanish championship for the past three seasons), while holding down a job at a gym to make a living. In May, Alan crashed during a training session on a sponsor’s Yamaha R6.

The bike was a write-off. He didn’t have the money to repair it, but he did receive a lot of support. A fund was set up in his name, and dozens of friends pitched in to raise the €5,000 he needed to get the Yamaha back up and running. He made his endurance racing debut in 2015 at the Bol d’Or race (starting in 20th place) on a Yamaha R1, which he had to push back to the pits after a crash. Earlier this year, for the first time in his life, he was on the starting grid at the 24 Heures Motos in Le Mans. He led the race for three hours with his two teammates, and they got the Japanese team F.C.C TSR’s Honda 1000 CBR into third place: quite an exploit.

Alan’s next challenge is the Suzuka 8 Hours, where he hopes to catch the eye of the Japanese manufacturers and climb further up the MotoGP ladder.

GALLERY OF ERRORS Tucked away inside a corridor of the Furygan factory in Nîmes is a collection of 70 race suits: a kind of gallery of (rider) errors. They remind us of all our champion riders and help us to analyze their crashes so we can keep improving the safety of our products.

Furygan dans le vent Tom Courly, 25 ans, participe au championnat longboard sud-africain régi par Sagra (South African Gravity Racing Association). Une centaine de riders s’y affrontent sur une demidouzaine d’épreuves. Tom, vice-champion 2015, a sollicité Furygan pour le développement d’une combinaison spécifique pour King of the Fort, la course de Pretoria se jouant sur un tracé tortueux de 2 kilomètres. « Il faut conjuguer souplesse pour adopter les meilleures positions et aérodynamisme. Ma combinaison est super profilée ; et le confort, exquis », avouait Tom à l’issue de la course où, sur des planches de 80 à 100 cm, les riders frôlent les 110 km/h.

Le partenariat entre Furygan et Tom Courly pourrait déboucher sur la commercialisation de combinaisons parfaitement adaptées à la pratique du longboard.

Lucas Mahias / Touche-à-tout de talent Adolescent, au guidon de son cyclomoteur, Lucas Mahias posait pour la première fois le genou sur un rond-point, avec une plaque en bois en guise de slider. Il était déjà très motivé !

Aujourd’hui, pour rouler vite, en toute sécurité, Furygan lui fournit 10 combinaisons chaque saison, car il est impliqué dans plusieurs championnats. À 27 ans, Lucas est l’un des pilotes français les plus rapides. Il est doué, c’est certain, et éclectique. Il vient récemment de signer la pole aux 24 Heures du Mans sur une Suzuki, de remporter les 12 Heures de Portimao sur une Yamaha (ce qui le place en tête du classement pilotes EWC), et ce peu après s’être illustré en mondial Superbike sur une Kawasaki et en coupe du monde Superstock 1000 sur une Yamaha. Tout cela la même année ! Lucas, c’est le mercenaire auquel les teams font appel pour remplacer un pilote au pied levé, avec la certitude d’un bon résultat. Il sait aussi gérer un championnat, comme en témoigne son titre français 600 Supersort en 2014, où il a remporté 12 manches sur 12 ! Lucas Mahias n’a pas fini de nous étonner.

Catching the wind Tom Courly, 25, competes in the South African longboard championship organized by SAGRA (South African Gravity Racing Association), with 100-odd riders doing battle in half a dozen events. Tom, the 2015 vice champion, asked Furygan to make him a special racing suit for King of the Fort, a race on a twisty 2-km (1.2-mile) course in Pretoria. ‘You have to be really flexible to manage the best and most aerodynamic positions. My suit is very streamlined and it feels totally comfortable,’ Tom said after the race, in which riders speed downhill at close to 110 kph (68 mph) on 80 to 100 cm (31 to 39-inch) boards. Thanks to Tom Courly’s tie-up with Furygan, we are considering marketing racing suits that are perfect for longboarding.

Lucas Mahias / Amazing all-rounder As a teenager on his moped, Lucas Mahias would get his knee down at roundabouts, using a wooden plank as a slider. He was revving up for success ! These days he competes in several championships, and Furygan supplies him with 10 race suits each season so he can ride fast in all safety. At 27, Lucas is one of the fastest French riders around. He’s highly talented and very versatile. He recently claimed pole at the Le Mans 24-hour race on a Sukuzi and won the Portimão 12 Hours on a Yamaha (thereby topping the EWC rider standings) shortly after turning in a strong performance for Kawasaki in WSBK and for Yamaha in the Superstock 1000 – all of it in the same year ! Lucas is a soldier of fortune. He’s the racer teams call on to replace a rider at short notice, knowing he’ll get them a good result. But he can also take on a championship: he walked off with the French 600 Supersport title in 2014 after winning all 12 rounds. One thing’s for sure, we haven’t heard the last of Lucas Mahias.

That’s the weight Furygan shaves off its race suits by printing graphics onto leather instead of sewing them on the traditional way. Eliminating one kilogram (2.2 pounds) makes our leathers 25 per cent lighter. In racing, where every additional ounce counts, that’s quite a performance.

We recommend you use a soft cloth dipped in cleansing milk for babies to care for your leathers. And, to weatherproof and keep your leathers in top condition, there’s no substitute for Furycuir conditioner, made with neatsfoot oil and available at all Furygan stockists. Chaque année, Furygan réalise ainsi 140 combinaisons sur mesure pour ses pilotes. Bien entendu, nous nous chargeons aussi du service après-vente, le lundi, après un week-end de course.

Collaboration Ivanov-Furygan Jules Danilo / Concentré à 100 % Jules Danilo a démarré la moto à 5 ans, en Chine, où il a habité 10 ans, après 3 années en Italie. Aujourd’hui, il partage son temps entre la France, la république Tchèque, et les Grands Prix, bien sûr, depuis 3 saisons. Infatigable globe-trotter, Jules, 21 ans, n’a cessé de progresser en Moto3 depuis 3 ans. Il pointe désormais aux portes du top 10, son objectif, au guidon de la Honda Ongetta-Rivacold, un team au sein duquel il a trouvé ses marques et avec lequel il entend poursuivre en 2017. Studieux, précis, concentré, analysant bien les situations, doté d’une grande détermination, Jules est également un sportif accompli : « Jusque dans le dernier tour, je suis physiquement à 100 % de mes capacités. » Il ne lâche jamais rien, connaissant l’investissement nécessaire pour pratiquer ce sport au plus haut niveau : « Il faut que je réussisse à être plus agressif, tout en trouvant un équilibre avec une certaine fluidité, gage de bons chronos. » Le parcours de Jules plaide en sa faveur, il se donne les moyens de ses ambitions : rouler en MotoGP, et chez Furygan, nous sommes tous à ses côtés !

Jules Danilo / Totally focused Jules Danilo started riding bikes at the age of 5 in China, where he lived for 10 years after spending 3 years in Italy. These days he divides his time between France and the Czech Republic – and the motorcycle Grand Prix. Globetrotting Jules has made constant progress in the Moto3 class over the past three seasons, and is now nudging his goal – the top 10 – on his Honda Ongetta-Rivacold, with a team he fits into well and intends to stay with in 2017.

Eager to learn, precise, focused and determined, Jules is good at analyzing situations, and a thorough sportsman. ‘I’m at 100 per cent of my physical ability until the very last lap’, he says.

He never lets up ; he knows motorcycle racing is a physically demanding sport that requires a lot of training. ‘I need to be more aggressive, but I also need to balance that out with smooth riding, which is key to clocking fast lap times,’ he adds. Jules’ career so far speaks for itself, and he’s doing what it takes to achieve his goal of being a MotoGP rider. Here at Furygan, we’re cheering him on!

L’ice race (ou « ice speedway », chez les Anglo-Saxons) est une discipline hyper exigeante où les pilotes doivent se protéger des 400 clous de 28 mm équipant les motos, des contacts, de l’abrasion de la glace, ultra-agressive… Un vrai laboratoire roulant qui a incité Furygan à se rapprocher du très expérimenté pilote russe Daniil Ivanov, 30 ans, l’une des stars mondiales, double champion du monde en individuel et par équipe, 3 fois vice-champion du monde. Daniil portera donc haut les couleurs Furygan, sur les anneaux glacés de 400 mètres, tout en collaborant avec nos techniciens.

Ivanov signs up with Furygan Furygan’s R&D team are always on the lookout for new ways to enhance product safety. From their standpoint, Ice Speedway is like a laboratory on wheels. In this extremely challenging sport, riders need protection from the 400 spikes (each 28 mm long) screwed into the tyres ; from collisions with other riders, and from the highly abrasive ice surface. Furygan recently signed up seasoned Russian rider Daniil Ivanov. The 30-year-old is an international star: three times world championship runner-up and winner of both the individual and team world titles.

Daniil will fly the Furygan colours on the sport’s 400-metre ice ovals and work with our technicians between races.

GREGORY MALLET Multiple médaillé olympique, champion du monde, champion d’Europe… Grégory Mallet est l’un des grands (1,95 m) de la natation française. Il s’entraîne 6 jours sur 7 et dévore ses 14 kilomètres de bassin quotidiens. Lorsqu’il sort la tête de l’eau, c’est pour enfourcher la Kawasaki Z 1000 qu’il affectionne et dont il parle avec passion.

A multiple Olympic medallist, world champion and European champion, 6ft 3in Gregory Mallet is (literally) a giant of French swimming. He trains six days a week, powering through 8.6 miles in the water each day. When he climbs out of the pool he gets on his beloved Kawasaki Z1000, which he talks about with great enthusiasm.

Grégory, à quand remonte ton plongeon dans l’univers de la moto ?

Gregory, when did you take the plunge into motorcycling?

Je n’ai jamais eu de mob ni de scooter et j’ai directement attaqué par la moto en passant mon permis à 21 ans avec mon meilleur ami, c’était un délire qu’on voulait vivre ensemble (rires) !

J’ai débuté par une Kawasaki Z 750, dont j’aimais le design agressif. Mais ayant dû m’exiler en région parisienne, je me suis retrouvé au guidon d’une Yamaha 125 DT Supermotard, plus fonctionnelle (rires) ! En revenant sur Marseille, j’ai récupéré une Suzuki SV 650, puis j’ai enchaîné avec des Kawasaki Z 750 et Z 1000 et une Triumph 600 Daytona qui envoyait grave le steak. C’est avec cette moto que j’ai tracé mes plus belles courbes !

I never had a moped or scooter. I started out on a proper motorcycle after taking my test at 21 with my best friend ; it was this crazy idea we’d got and we wanted to do it together [Laughs].

My first bike was a Kawasaki Z750. I liked its aggressive design. But after being forced to move to the Paris region, I began riding a Yamaha DT125 supermoto – more practical [Laughs]. When I returned to Marseille, I got hold of a Suzuki SV650. After that I rode a Kawasaki Z750 and a Z1000. Then a Triumph Daytona 600, which really packed a punch. I rode the best twisties of my life on that bike.

Pour autant, tu n’as pas enchaîné avec d’autres sportives ?

Did you go on to other sport bikes?

Non, parce que je faisais beaucoup de ville, environ 8 000 kilomètres par an. J’ai acheté un Gilera GP 800 que j’ai gardé 3 ans et, dans un tout autre registre, une Ducati Hypermotard, trop brutale pour les rues de Marseille. Je suis donc revenu à une valeur sûre, la Kawasaki Z 1000… que je me suis fait voler. Je suis alors passé du Honda Dax 70 (!) à la Harley 1200 Sportster Seventy-Two, une très bonne expérience, avec un état d’esprit qui m’a plu et m’a rapproché de ma passion des muscles cars.

No, because I was doing a fair amount of town riding – up to 5,000 miles a year. I bought a Gilera GP 800, which I had for three years, and something totally different – a Ducati Hypermotard. It was too jerky to ride on Marseille’s streets, so I went back to a fail-safe option: the Kawasaki Z1000. But it got stolen. I switched to a Honda Dax 70 (!) and then a Harley 1200 Sportster Seventy-Two. That was a very good experience. I liked the spirit of the bike, it was similar to my other passion: muscle cars.

C’est quoi cette attirance pour les gros moteurs ?

Why are you so attracted to big engines?

En fait, je suis fan des voitures américaines d’avant 1973, où l’essence coulait à flots, et des muscles cars en particulier, pour leur design avant-gardiste et, bien sûr, leurs performances. J’ai entièrement refait à neuf, y compris le moteur, une Mustang Coupe GT de 1965. Lorsque je faisais du ski nautique, on avait un bateau à moteur V8 qui tombait parfois en panne, mais qui m’a fait aimer sa sonorité. Je me suis dit qu’il serait bien que je sache le réparer. J’ai donc dégoté un vieux moteur pour me faire la main et j’ai appris la mécanique en autodidacte. Depuis, ma passion n’a cessé de croître.

Tu es accro à la Kawasaki Z 1000. Si tu devais la vendre, que dirais-tu pour nous tenter ?

Elle est polyvalente, maniable, avec beaucoup de couple. C’est une sportive dans l’âme, adaptée à tous les gabarits ! J’ai aussi roulé sur une ZX-10R, mais je n’étais pas très à l’aise, je n’ai pas le gabarit d’un pistard. Je suis plutôt en quête d’une moto plaisir, qui conjugue les qualités d’une GT, mais avec une bonne gouache.

Et la Z 1000 est l’équation parfaite.

Quelles sensations recherches-tu sur 2 roues ?

C’est une échappatoire, qui me permet de sortir la tête du chlore, où je passe 5 heures par jour. La natation est un sport calme, bio, qui nécessite beaucoup de patience, mais on est des compétiteurs, on aime les challenges et la moto en fait partie, c’est une source d’adrénaline.

On est content de se mettre à l’amende en se tirant la bourre. Ce qui m’intéresse aussi, c’est la glisse. C’est beau à voir et j’aimerais apprendre. Je me verrais bien au guidon d’une 450 KX-F de supermotard !

Tu as déjà tâté du circuit ?

Non, mais j’adorerais. J’ai été invité au Bol d’Or par Kawasaki pour suivre la course en bord de piste, avec une visite des stands… C’est un sport tellement loin du mien ! Mais si je devais un jour faire de la compétition, je crois que ce serait sur le Dakar, pour vivre cette sensation d’être livré à soi-même face aux défis et d’appréhender seul les difficultés. Je suis d’une nature solitaire, mais j’ai un esprit d’équipe et je crois que les rallyes conviendraient à mon tempérament.

Mais tant que je suis nageur, je me dois d’être concentré sur mon sport, de ne pas gaspiller mon énergie à autre chose qu’à la récupération. Ma forme physique, c’est mon essence (rires) !

Un pilote qui te fait rêver ?

Valentino Rossi, bien sûr. J’ai grandi avec lui ! Quand j’étais petit, il gagnait ; aujourd’hui, il gagne encore (rires) ! C’est un exemple et une source d’inspiration pour de nombreux pilotes.

Tu roules sous protection Furygan, tu privilégies le look ou la sécurité ?

Les deux ! Je veux une sécurité maximale, avec toutes les protections, la dorsale… et comme je me déplace à 80 % à moto, je roule avec la totale, chaussures, jean renforcé, blouson et gants.

Mais il faut que l’esthétique soit cool. Furygan reflète totalement mon style et ma personnalité.

J’adore le logo qui déchire, la qualité de cuir, la coupe, les coloris… Tout me va !

À la ville, Grégory a craqué sur un ensemble à tendance rétro, façon James Dean. Pour ses sorties plus musclées, c’est au charismatique Furygan Raptor qu’il fait confiance, accompagné des derniers-nés des gants de piste Furygan : les AFS-19.

Gregory has snapped up a retro James Dean-style ensemble for riding in town. For more hardcore rides he puts his faith in the sporty fit Furygan Raptor, teamed with Furygan’s all-new AFS-19 racing gloves.

Actually, I’m a fan of pre-1973 American cars – real gas guzzlers – and specially muscle cars, because of their avant-garde design and of course their performance. I’ve totally restored a 1965 Mustang Coupe GT, including the engine. When I used to go waterskiing, we had a boat with a V8 engine that would sometimes break down, but I fell in love with its sound. I thought I’d better learn to repair it. So I managed to find an old engine to practice on and I became a self-taught mechanic.

My passion has only grown stronger since then.

You’re hooked on the Kawasaki Z1000. If you had to sell it, how would you tempt a potential buyer?

It’s versatile, easy to manoeuvre and has plenty of torque. And it’s a sport bike to the core, suited to riders of all sizes. I’ve also ridden a ZX-10R, but I wasn’t too comfortable on it. I’m not built like a racer. I’m looking for a bike that’s fun to ride and has all the advantages of a tourer, but with lots of power. And the Z1000 gets that mix just right.

What sensations are you looking to experience on your bike?

It’s a form of escape. It gets me away from the pool, where I spend five hours a day. Swimming’s a calm, organic sport that requires a lot of patience. But we swimmers are competitive, too. We enjoy challenges. And a motorbike is a challenge. It gives you an adrenaline rush. We’re happy to pile the pressure on each other when we’re competing to see who’s fastest. I’m also keen on drifting. It’s beautiful to watch. I’d like to learn. I can definitely see myself on a KXF 450 supermoto !

Have you tried riding on a circuit?

No, but I’d love to. Kawasaki invited me to watch the Bol d’Or from trackside and visit the pit boxes. It’s so different to my sport. But if I were to get into racing one day it’d have to be the Dakar, to experience the feel of having no one but yourself to count on when you run into trouble. I’m a solitary kind of person, but I do have team spirit and I think rallies would suit my temperament. But so long as I’m a swimmer, I owe it to myself to focus on my sport and not waste my energy on anything but recovery. Staying in good shape – that’s the fuel that keeps me running [Laughs].

A rider who really knocks your socks off?

Valentino Rossi, of course. I grew up with him ! He used to win races when I was a kid, and these days he’s still winning [Laughs]. He’s an example and a source of inspiration for many riders.

You wear Furygan protective gear when you ride. What do you go for – looks or safety?

Both ! I want maximum safety – all the padding, the back protector, you name it. And since I get around by bike 80% of the time, I wear all the kit: shoes, reinforced jeans, jacket and gloves. But it has to be a cool look. Furygan totally captures my style and personality. I love the amazing logo, the leather quality, the cut, the colours: it’s all good!

Depuis ses débuts en 2001, le Finlandais Aki Ajo a fait du team éponyme une machine à gagner, forte de 4 titres mondiaux : en 125 avec Mike Di Meglio (2008) et Marc Marquez (2010), en Moto3 avec Sandro Cortese (2012) et en Moto2 avec Johann Zarco (2015).

JOHANN ZARCO’S EXTENDED FAMILY

Finn Aki Ajo has shaped the team bearing his name into a winning machine since it debuted in 2001. Ajo Motorsport has notched up four world championship titles: the 125cc title with Mike Di Meglio in 2008 and Marc Marquez in 2010, the Moto3 title with Sandro Cortese in 2012 and the Moto2 title with Johann Zarco in 2015.

The French champion took time off at a recent Grand Prix to introduce us to the squad behind his success, who are like a second family to him.

1/ Johann’s media relations are handled by Frenchman Laurent Fellon and Catalan Pol Bertran, who joined Ajo Motorsport four years ago.

2/ Nacho Madurga is the official pit signaller. It’s his first season with the team.

3/ Kalex chassis engineer Matthias Kanth, crew chief Massimo Branchini and WP suspension technician Stefan Kurfiss sit down together for debriefs. Kurfiss was Johann’s mechanic when the rider signed up with Ajo in 2011, and the two of them have forged a strong bond.

1/ Inconditionnel soutien de Johann, Laurent Fellon a formé et entraîné le champion depuis l’âge de 13 ans, pour que ses gestes deviennent des automatismes. Du bord de la piste ou dans les stands, son œil expert détecte et analyse en permanence. Exigeant, Laurent ne laisse rien passer.

1/ Laurent Fellon is unswervingly loyal to Johann. He has coached the world champion since he was 13, making him practice each technique until it becomes a reflex. He inspects and analyzes every inch of Johann’s performance from trackside or the box, his expert eye catching the slightest slip-up. He is a demanding taskmaster ; he knows it takes nothing short of absolute excellence to win.

2/ David Garcia has worked, among others, with Jorge Lorenzo in the 250cc class on Aprilia.

At Ajo Motorsport, his job is to go over the telemetry data with a fine-tooth comb.

3/ During practice sessions, Massimo Branchini and David Garcia keep tabs on the screens but – at Johann’s own request – never show him the times clocked. It’s his way of staying focused.

An unusual strategy, commentators say. But it has proved effective.

4/ Noe Herrera is an experienced and painstaking mechanic. Johann and Laurent Fellon affectionately call him ‘Cacahuète’ (Peanut).

5/ Mechanics move around the Ajo Motorsport box as if in a choreographed ballet. Each one works in silence, totally focused on the job at hand.

1/ One hour before the race, Johann goes into his own little bubble. He shuts himself off in the trailer of his truck, which only three people are then allowed to enter. He emerges 15 minutes before the start of the race with a single objective: putting everything he’s learnt in thousands of kilometres worth of training into practice.

2/ An exemplary team manager, Aki Ajo handles a squad of 40-odd people. He runs Johann Zarco in Moto2, racers Brad Binder and Bo Bendsneyder on KTM in Moto3, and Ajo Academy riders Tetsuta Nagashima and Barry Baltus in the European and Spanish championships. He wrestles his 200bhp BMW into improbable trajectories along bumpy road surfaces. The 5ft 9in, 12-stone rider has a rugby player’s build.

He rides instinctively, aggressively, using the brute strength of his arms and thighs, locked in hand-to-hand combat with a bike speeding like a cannonball. At only 27, Michael has 13 TT wins under his belt (the first one back in 2009, on a Yamaha 600 in the Supersport TT), and his incredible racing career is far from over. By contrast, one of his main rivals, the legendary John McGuiness, is chasing a 47th win at the age of 44. But Michael doesn’t ride out of a desire to go down in the history books. He rides to get top billing, full stop. He takes on one race after another the way he’d knock back pints of Guinness because he knows that out there on the course, the Grim Reaper lurks behind every wall and every tree. Victory is all that matters to Michael. He hates losing, to put it mildly. L’ESPRIT DE CONQUETE A CONQUERING SPIRIT

Furygan est née de la détermination d’un homme de caractère, Jacques Segura, à créer son entreprise pour y faire aboutir ses idées novatrices. En 1969, au moment où la moto fait sa révolution, Honda CB 750 en tête, Furygan entame la formidable épopée qui en fait aujourd’hui un leader français de renommée mondiale.

Si, comme le chantent Serge Gainsbourg et Jane Birkin, 69 est une « année érotique », c’est aussi celle où la moto se réinvente. L’industrie anglaise est sur le déclin et la montée en puissance des japonaises, légères, fiables et performantes, annonce la fin de règne des Européennes. La moto devient un objet de loisirs, de grande consommation, avec la démocratisation du trail et de l’off-road, qui dopent le marché, y compris en matière d’accessoires et d’équipements.

Depuis 1963, à Nîmes, la famille Segura s’est fait un nom dans la fabrication de gants de protection et Jacques entend y associer la moto, promise à un bel avenir et qui le passionne. À la suite d’un différend familial, Jacques prend son destin en main pour s’accomplir dans sa propre société, Furygan. Il y donnera, sans retenue, toute la mesure de ses talents de technicien du cuir doublés d’un esprit visionnaire.

Furygan owes its existence to the drive and determination of a charismatic man named Jacques Segura who wanted to turn his innovative ideas into a successful business. In 1969 – the year the Honda CB750 changed the face of motorcycling – Furygan set out on the formidable journey that would make it the world-renowned French brand it is today.

1969 may well have been the ‘erotic year’ of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s duet 69, année erotique, but it was also the year that revolutionized motorcycling. The British motorcycle industry was on its last legs, and the arrival of lightweight, reliable, high-performance Japanese bikes had put an end to the supremacy of European manufacturers. Motorcycling became a leisure activity, and motorcycles an object of mass consumption, as an influx of affordable trail and off-road models boosted sales of bikes as well as accessories and equipment.

In Nîmes, in the south of France, the Segura family had been making a name for itself in the production of protective gloves since 1963. Jacques, who was mad about motorcycles, wanted to extend the range to include gloves for the burgeoning bike market. Following a family dispute, he took his fate into his own hands. He started the business that would become known as Furygan and grew it using his visionary ideas and mastery of leatherwork.

« Monsieur Jacques », comme l’appellent ses employés, avec un mélange de respect et d’affection, est un personnage hors du commun, digne globetrotter d’un roman d’aventures. Dès son plus jeune âge, dans le Paris d’après-guerre, il s’imprègne du métier de la chaussure, dans lequel exercent ses parents. À 14 ans, il travaille le cuir sous toutes les coutures, avide de connaissances, passant du soulier aux gants avec la même dextérité. « J’étais toujours volontaire pour tout », se remémore-t-il.

Une fois ses journées de 12 heures terminées, passionné d’aviation, Jacques s’adonne au vol libre et profite de son service militaire pour obtenir son brevet de pilote. Aux commandes d’un Junkers JU 52 récupéré auprès de l’armée allemande, il effectue les évacuations sanitaires et les recherches de bateaux en perdition autour de Madagascar. À son retour dans l’Hexagone, à 23 ans, il se passionne pour la plongée et embrasse le métier de scaphandrier, où il excelle, devenant instructeur pour le prestigieux corps des Pompiers de Paris et la Brigade fluviale, un des fleurons de la Préfecture de police de Paris. À 33 ans, au moment où Furygan va éclore, Monsieur Jacques a déjà bien bourlingué, il dispose aussi d’une indéniable expertise dans le métier du cuir, et plus particulièrement des gants.

En décidant de voler de ses propres ailes, Monsieur Jacques se lance un défi de taille. Il a peu d’argent, pas de moyens de production et rien de concret à vendre, excepté ses idées et son savoir-faire.

Homme d’action par excellence, il génère une véritable dynamique et en quelques semaines, réunit les forces nécessaires pour faire décoller son entreprise. Il se souvient : « Mon épouse avait quitté Paris pour me rejoindre à Nîmes, où elle s’est mise en quête de locaux, une mission facilitée par le fait que l’industrie de la chaussure était en déclin et qu’il existait une main-d’œuvre qualifiée dans la couture.

Notre enthousiasme était communicatif et 3 représentants de commerce avec lesquels je collaborais auparavant sont venus spontanément me proposer leurs services, tout en sachant que je démarrais de zéro. Ils ont pris le risque parce qu’ils croyaient en nous. Sans catalogue ni produit à présenter aux clients, ils ont pris la route, visité les motocistes et engrangé des commandes. C’était incroyable et cela n’a fait que renforcer notre volonté de réussir ! De mon côté, je recrutais une quinzaine de couturières pour lancer la production de gants de moto et de ski, et notre premier modèle de blouson, le Chamois. » Les gants de ski représenteront jusqu’à 50 % de la production, avec 200 000 paires vendues chaque année.

Les 3 premiers représentants de Furygan (tous nés en 1936) avaient en commun d’avoir intégré, en tant qu’élèves officier de réserve, le 11e Choc.

Cette unité parachutiste d’élite de l’armée de terre française avait, par son efficacité, inspiré la création des fameux Bérets verts américains. Sa devise était « Qui ose gagne ». L’insigne du régiment, une tête de panthère noire dessinée par le lieutenant Dupas, a constitué la source d’inspiration de celle, stylisée, toutes griffes dehors, adoptée par Furygan. Quant au nom, il vient de cette furieuse envie, cette furie qui animait ces anciens guerriers ayant mis toute leur énergie dans la bataille commerciale qu’ils livraient à leurs concurrents. Le nom Fury est donc retenu, mais à Nîmes, l’existence de la marque Ferry aurait pu prêter à confusion. Monsieur Jacques ajoute donc naturellement le mot « gant » à Fury, et Furygant prendra ensuite l’appellation Furygan que l’on connaît aujourd’hui. Par tradition, la marque fabrique toujours les casques portés par de nombreuses équipes de parachutistes dans le monde entier.

No product, no catalogue and yet sales took off!

‘We called it Fury because of our furious desire to succeed’

‘Monsieur Jacques’, as his employees called him with a mixture of respect and affection, was a largethan-life character; a globetrotting hero straight out of an adventure novel. Born in post-war Paris, he began to assist his parents – who were shoemakers by trade – from a very young age. He was quick to learn, and by 14 he was skilfully crafting various leather items, from gloves to shoes. ‘I was always up for anything that needed doing,’ he recalls. He had a passion for flying, and would often go hang-gliding after working a 12-hour day. When he was called up for military service, he seized the opportunity to earn a pilot’s license. Flying a Junkers JU 52 formerly owned by the Luftwaffe, he carried out medical evacuations and searches for missing boats in the seas around Madagascar. On returning to France at the age of 23, he developed a passion for diving and became an expert commercial diver.

He then worked as a dive instructor with the Paris Fire Brigade and the elite Brigade Fluviale (Paris river police). So by the time he founded Furygan at 33, Monsieur Jacques the master leather craftsman had knocked about the world quite a bit.

Monsieur Jacques had set himself a real challenge by deciding to go solo. He had little money, nowhere to manufacture his gloves and nothing to sell except his ideas and know-how. But he was an absolute go-getter, and in the space of a few short weeks he managed to put together a team to get his business off the ground. He remembers it well. ‘My wife came down from Paris to join me in Nîmes, where she started looking for business premises and workers – a task made easier by the context of a local shoe industry in decline and no dearth of qualified leather craftsmen. Our enthusiasm was catching, and three sales reps I’d worked with previously came to me of their own accord to offer me their services, even though they knew I was starting from scratch. They took that risk because they believed in us. We had no actual products, let alone a product catalogue to show potential customers, but our reps took to the road and started picking up orders from motorcycle dealerships. It was amazing, and it only strengthened our determination to succeed. I hired 15-odd craftsmen to begin producing motorcycle and ski gloves and our very first jacket, the Chamois.’ Ski gloves would go on to account for 50% of production: the company now sells 200,000 pairs per year.

Those early Furygan sales reps (all three were born in 1936) had been officer cadets with the 11e Choc, the French Army’s elite parachute regiment. These crack troops are said to have inspired the world-famous U.S. Army Special Forces, known as the Green Berets. Their motto: Who Dares, Wins. The regiment’s insignia, a black panther’s head, inspired the Furygan logo – a stylized black panther showing its claws. ‘As for the name,’ says Monsieur Jacques, ‘it reflected our furious desire to succeed – the “fury” of those former warriors, who invested all their energy in their battle to out-sell our competitors.’ So he settled on the name ‘Fury’. But there was another company in Nîmes called Ferry and so, in order to avoid confusion, Monsieur Jacques tacked on the word gant (glove). In later years ‘Furygant’ was changed to the brand name we know today. In a nod to its history, Furygan still makes the helmets worn by skydivers around the world.

DES CHIFFRES QUI AFFOLENT La reine de l’endurance, capable d’abattre le 0 à 100 km/h en 2, 7 secondes, engloutit 600 litres d’essence (du commerce) et 600 centilitres d’huile en 24 heures. La moyenne comprise entre 145 km/h et 150 km/h, selon les aléas de la course, ne semble pas impressionnante sur le papier. Et pourtant, il faut cravacher comme un damné pour tenir le rythme. Un écart de 6 à 7 secondes au tour sépare les top guns des moins rapides. La barre des 3 500 kilomètres en 2 tours d’horloge a déjà été franchie, c’est impressionnant, mais c’est 2 000 kilomètres de moins qu’aux 24 Heures du Mans auto !

IMPRESSIVE FIGURES Capable of going from 0 to 100 kph in 2.7 seconds, bikes in the premier class of the race consume 600 litres of (regular) fuel and 600 centilitres of engine oil over 24 hours. Though the average speed (145-150kph, depending how the race pans out) might not seem too high, you have to ride like a demon to keep up the pace.

The record for the longest distance covered in 2 rotations of the 12-hour clock is 3,500 km: an impressive figure, but it’s 2,000 km less than the Le Mans 24 Hours car race record.

Motorcycle endurance riders need hardwearing gear that holds up under all circumstances, including crashes and very long periods in the saddle. Here are some specific features of an endurance race suit, designed for riding flat out for 24 hours.

BOSSE DANS LE DOS La bosse, appendice aérodynamique, est ici creusée pour accueillir un « camel back », littéralement « dos de chameau ». Une réserve d’eau d’un litre qui alimente le pilote par le biais d’un tuyau passant par le casque.

PROTECTIONS ÉPAULES À l’intérieur de la combinaison se trouvent des protections D3O. Identiques à celles des produits Furygan vendus en magasin, elles sont plébiscitées par les pilotes pour leur souplesse, leur légèreté et leur confort.

BACK HUMP The hump is an aerodynamic feature. It is hollowed out to hold a one-litre (33-ounce) hydro bag, with a tube routed through the rider’s helmet.

SHOULDER PADS The suit features D3O shoulder pads, also used in the Furygan products you can buy in stores. Flexible, lightweight and comfortable, they are very popular with endurance riders.

CUIR Le cuir doit être souple, mais aussi résistant. Il n’y a cependant pas de différence avec celui que nous utilisons pour les produits de série. Afin de perdre du poids, les différents logos sont imprimés par une machine spéciale, dans notre Motion Lab.

LEATHER Race suit leather needs to be both supple and hardwearing. Our suits are made using exactly the same leather as our off-the-peg products. We print all the logos onto the leather with a special machine in our Motion Lab to reduce the weight of each suit.

TIME 24 hours. That’s how much time an endurance rider will spend in his race suit in the run-up to and during a 24-hour race, from the Tuesday to the Sunday – roughly six times as long as a MotoGP rider.

PERFORATION Comme les combinaisons de vitesse, les combinaisons d’endurance sont le plus souvent perforées afin d’aider le pilote à réguler sa température pendant l’effort. Cependant, sur un set de 3 combinaisons, il arrive que certains en demandent une sans perforations pour les relais de nuit, plus frais.

PERFORATIONS Like speed championship race suits, endurance gear has perforations to help riders regulate their body temperature on the track. But some riders prefer one of their three race suits to be non-perforated for riding stints during the night, when it’s cooler.

PROTECTION PECTORALE Le réservoir d’une moto d’endurance est déjà volumineux, et les valves Zénith pour le remplissage rapide créent un relief supplémentaire sur le dessus. Il est fréquent que la poitrine des pilotes le heurte durant la course. Jusqu’à parfois générer des hématomes. Les pilotes d’endurance ont donc été les premiers à avoir été équipés d’une protection pectorale en D3O.

CHEST PROTECTOR An endurance tank is quite big, and the quick fill Zenith fuel valves add bulk on top. À rider’s chest can easily get bruised from pressing against the fuel tank during the race. That’s why endurance riders were the first to be equipped with D3O chest protectors.

RENFORT MIKA La poitrine des combinaisons d’endurance est aussi recouverte d’une couche de film transparent. Ce film protège la combinaison et le pilote des émanations et résidus d’essence qui s’échappent par les valves Zénith lors du passage aux stands pour les ravitaillements.

SLIDERS COUDES Les pilotes d’endurance bénéficient de sliders coudes amovibles, placés un peu différemment de ceux des pilotes de vitesse, qui avec leurs machines prototypes plus légères prennent des angles plus forts, et adoptent des positions différentes.

TRANSPARENT FILM The chest area of an endurance race suit is also covered in a transparent film to protect the rider from fuel vapour escaping from the valves during pit stops for refuelling.

ELBOW SLIDERS The elbow sliders endurance riders wear are placed slightly differently to the ones on a MotoGP race suit.

That’s because the purpose-built prototypes used in MotoGP are lighter than endurance bikes, so riders sit differently and turn with a deeper lean angle.

FLÈCHE In December 1971 at the Montlhéry circuit, the two-time French champion made four short-distance record attempts (1/4 mile, 1 km, 1 mile and 10 km) in the saddle of four Yamahas (125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc), setting 11 new records. It was his first appearance on the track wearing a silver race suit made by Furygan (spelt back then with a final t), which he would be the only rider to ever carry off, with great aplomb. A leather suit had never been dyed that colour before. Furygan had to keep the thick, protective leather supple while ensuring the silver would hold on to its shine over time. It was quite a technical challenge! But Furygan’s flair for innovation combined with the expertise of the Arnal tannery (established in the Aveyron since 1880) worked wonders, and the suit sparkles brightly to this day.

SILVER ARROW En décembre 1971, à Montlhéry, le double champion de France s’attaque aux records de vitesse sur courtes distances (400 mètres, kilomètre, mile, 10 kilomètres) au guidon de 4 Yamaha (125 cm3, 250 cm3, 350 cm3 et 500 cm3) et décroche 11 nouveaux records.

Il porte, pour la première fois, une combinaison Furygan (qui s’écrit alors avec un « t ») argentée qu’il sera le seul pilote à arborer avec distinction. Auparavant, jamais une combinaison en cuir n’avait été tannée dans cette teinte. Il fallait à la fois conserver la souplesse d’un cuir épais et protecteur et garantir l’éclat argenté dans le temps. Ce fut un défi technique ! Mais le sens de l’innovation de Furygan, associé à l’expérience de la tannerie Arnal implantée depuis 1880 dans l’Aveyron, a fait merveille et la combinaison brille, aujourd’hui encore, de mille éclats.
