our le Racing Service Furygan, 2017 marquera la montée en MotoGP de Johann Zarco et la mise en place d’une structure dédiée aux pilotes sur chaque Grand Prix. Nous sommes fiers de poursuivre cette collaboration avec Johann – avec lequel Furygan est déjà double champion du monde Moto2 – dans sa nouvelle aventure avec le team Tech 3.

Notre partenariat avec Johann se prolonge via ZF Grand Prix School, une idée généreuse qui permet aux enfants, à partir de 6 ans, de poser un pied en vitesse et pourquoi pas un jour ? d’accéder au mondial en suivant un cursus parfaitement établi.

Johann et son complice, Laurent Fellon, y croient à fond et nous partageons leur enthousiasme. Afin d’accompagner cette dynamique, Furygan a créé spécialement des combinaisons pour les jeunes talents, avec la même exigence que pour nos espoirs en Grands Prix, tels Jules Danilo ou Iker Lecuona. Transmettre ses connaissances, partager une expérience, donner de l’impulsion aux idées pour les voir se concrétiser… autant de valeurs qui unissent Furygan, Johann et Laurent.

Chas Mortimer, en son temps, en 1972, portait, lui aussi, les couleurs Furygan, avec une simple poignée de main en guise de contrat. Lorsqu’il passait dans notre usine de Nîmes, il prenait le temps de déjeuner. Parfois, il séjournait à la maison, entre deux Grands Prix. Aujourd’hui, à 68 ans, Chas roule toujours Furygan, avec la même classe. La fidélité et l’amitié sont d’autres valeurs en lesquelles nous croyons et qui forgent l’histoire de Furygan depuis 1969. Je vous souhaite une bonne lecture de ce Furymag#2, et une bonne route !

We’ve taken our support for Johann one step further with the ZF Grand Prix School. This big-hearted initiative gives kids aged 6 and up a chance to dip their toe into racing and perhaps make it all the way to the world championship after going through this well-thought-out training course. Johann and his long-time associate Laurent Fellon are totally invested in the school, and we share their enthusiasm.

At Furygan, we’re backing this exciting initiative by designing custom-made suits for these kids with the same painstaking care we put into suits for our young Grand Prix talent, like Jules Danilo and Iker Lecuona. Handing down knowledge, sharing experiences and helping to transform great ideas into reality: these are all values Furygan has in common with Johann and Laurent.

or Furygan’s Racing Service, 2017 marks Johann Zarco’s move up to MotoGP, and the setting up of a dedicated unit for our riders at each Grand Prix race. We’re proud to partner Johann – two-time Moto2 champion with Furygan – in his new venture with the Tech 3 team.

Back in 1972, Chas Mortimer also wore the Furygan colours. A simple handshake sealed that contract.

He would stay for lunch whenever he visited our factory in Nîmes, and he was occasionally a guest in our home between Grand Prix races. Today, at 68, Chas still rides wearing Furygan, and he’s as classy as ever. Loyalty and friendship, too, are values we believe in. They’ve been part of Furygan’s history since our beginnings in 1969.

FURYGAN X IVANOV L’instinct de conservation est un moteur puissant.

Exemple : peu de motards prennent le risque de rouler à 140 km/h sur une piste de glace vive, tranchante comme une lame, avec à leurs trousses une horde de machines sans freins, hérissées de clous et énervées au méthanol. C’est pourtant ce que fait Daniil Ivanov.

Self-preservation is a strong motivator. Few motorcyclists would take the risk of racing at 140 km/h on a sheet of ice, with a horde of brakeless machines featuring razor-sharp tyre spikes and turbocharged methanol-fuelled engines baying at their heels. But that’s exactly what Daniil Ivanov does.

Reconnus, sur la route comme dans les paddocks, pour la qualité de la protection que nous offrons à nos clients et pilotes, nous ne pouvions que relever le gant. C’est ainsi que le champion du monde d’Ice Speedway 2013 a intégré notre équipe. Ensemble, pour ses tests hivernaux, nous avons commencé le développement d’un équipement spécifique à sa discipline.

Après plusieurs mois de travail sur les matières et leur assemblage, en vue de proposer une combinaison dotée d’une résistance à la perforation hors du commun (voir rubrique Macro) et adaptée à l’ergonomie particulière de la discipline, Daniil a pu courir les deux premières manches du championnat du monde (Ice Speedway Gladiators), à Togliatti, en Russie, avec sa nouvelle combinaison officielle. Et faire monter Furygan sur un nouveau podium !

Take a look at the large scars running across the Russian rider’s left thigh and forearm, and you’ll realize why he challenged us to come up with totally puncture-proof armour for his 2017 season. As every Furygan wearer knows, we offer customers and racers superlative protection, both on and off the track.

So of course we took up the gauntlet. We invited the 2013 Ice Speedway world champion to join our team, and started designing equipment geared specifically to his sport in the course of winter testing. After several months of work developing and assembling materials, we produced a riding suit with high puncture resistance [see Macro section] that’s perfectly suited to an ice racer’s needs.

Daniil raced the first two rounds of the Ice Speedway Gladiators world championship in Togliatti, Russia, kitted out in his new suit, giving Furygan its first podium spot in this dangerous sport.

Questions pour une championne Depuis 2002, Barbara roule en compétition. 3e aux 24 Heures de Barcelone en 2014, elle a terminé 2 fois à la 7e place du Moto Tour.

Barbara, le podium du Moto Tour 2017 est-il un objectif envisageable ?

C’est compliqué… Il faut une grosse moto, une 1000, pour avoir plus de couple et d’allonge. Or, je roulais avec une Yamaha 700 MT-07 en 2016. En plus, il faut consacrer beaucoup de temps aux reconnaissances et pouvoir accepter de rouler encore plus vite, avec arbres, poteaux et ravins à 2 doigts de la trajectoire idéale (rires).

Qu’est-ce qui fait ta force, avec 6 victoires féminines d’affilée ?

La volonté, car les journées sont longues : tu peux faire 17 heures de moto, en partant de nuit, sur une route gelée, sans visibilité… Il ne faut jamais rien lâcher… Et une grosse dose de passion !

Quels conseils pour débuter sur le Moto Tour ?

S’entourer de gens connaissant les rallyes et leur réglementation, rouler régulièrement sur la route, faire du sport pour se sentir bien sur la moto et partir avec un roadster, afin de bénéficier d’un grand guidon et de ne pas être trop sur l’avant.

Et pour convaincre les femmes de faire de la compétition ?

En 2016, 1 400 femmes ont pris une licence FFM, c’est encourageant. Il y a des stages et des courses spécifiques pour découvrir les disciplines avant de participer à des épreuves mixtes, où les femmes sont plutôt bien accueillies.

Tu roules aussi en tout-terrain, t’imagines-tu au départ du Dakar ?

Ah oui ! Mais avant le Dakar, j’aimerais faire le Rallye du Maroc et acquérir de l’expérience car je débute.

Dans cette idée, je vais rouler à la Grappe de Cyrano avec Yamaha, et pour le Dakar, on verra dans quelque temps… (rires).

Barbara Collet Going for gold Barbara has been racing since 2002. She placed 3rd in the 24 Hours of Barcelona in 2014, and has finished 7th on 2 occasions in the Moto Tour, a popular French rally.

Barbara, do you think you can win the 2017 Moto Tour?

It’s a tough call. You need a big bike – at least a 1000cc, for extra torque and flow – and I was on a Yamaha 700 MT-07 in 2016. You have to spend a lot of time recceing, and get used to the idea of riding flat out knowing there are trees, poles and ravines lurking a hair’s breadth from your ideal trajectory [Laughs].

You’ve scored 6 consecutive wins in the women’s category. What’s your secret?

Willpower. It can be a long, hard day’s riding. Sometimes you’re on the bike for 17 hours after setting out at night on an icy road with zero visibility. You can’t ever give up. It helps if you have a healthy dose of passion for your sport!

What advice would you give a Moto Tour rookie?

Hang out with people who are familiar with rallying and how it works. Do a lot of on-road riding, and stay in shape so you’ll feel good on your bike. Start out with a roadster so you have that tall handlebar and you’re not hunched over.

How would you encourage more women to take up racing?

In 2016, 1,400 women got a racing licence from the French motorcycling federation. That’s an encouraging number. There are workshops and training courses where you can learn a specific discipline, and then take part in mixed championships that welcome women racers.

You’re also an all-terrain rider. Do you see yourself at the start line of the Dakar Rally?

I certainly do! But first I want to do the Morocco Rally and get some experience, because I’m a beginner.

I’ll be racing the Grappe de Cyrano enduro rally on a Yamaha for starters. As for the Dakar – all in good time! [Laughs].

Si Anthony Delhalle, 35 ans, a débuté par la vitesse en 2000, il s’est rapidement forgé une solide réputation en Endurance, grâce à sa victoire au Bol d’Or, catégorie Superstock, dès 2006, déjà sur une Suzuki. Depuis, avec le SERT de Dominique Méliand, il empile les victoires et les titres. « C’est vrai que je suis champion d’année en année, et ça m’a fait drôle de ne pas l’avoir été en 2014 », s’amuse le pilote Furygan qui précise : « Ma motivation est intacte et je remercie nos concurrents car Suzuki est la marque à battre. Chaque année, on se remobilise et on travaille deux fois plus. » Faute de pouvoir s’entraîner avec la Suzuki d’Endurance, pour gagner en vitesse et en réactivité et ainsi être plus performant en qualification, Anthony s’est attaqué, en 2016, au championnat espagnol CEV sur une Suzuki JEG Racing, disputant 5 des 8 épreuves, avec des résultats dépassant ses objectifs. Cette saison, en étant obligé de rater une course en concurrence de date avec l’Endurance – « j’ai déjà grillé mon joker » –, il entend se battre pour le titre, tout en espérant décrocher une 9e couronne mondiale. « Il n’y a pas de calcul de record, je les prends comme elles viennent ! » Et modeste, avec ça !

Anthony Delhalle Eight world titles anwting Anthony Delhalle, 35, started out as a speed racer in 2000. But he’s carved out a reputation for himself in World Endurance, winning the Superstock class of the Bol d’Or in 2006 on a Suzuki. Since then, he has racked up race wins and titles as part of manager Dominique Méliand’s SERT team. ‘I’d been world champion year after year, so it was weird not to get the title in 2014,’ says the Furygan rider. ‘I’m still totally fired up and I’m grateful to our rivals, because they motivate us to perform so Suzuki remains the brand to beat. We regroup every year, and work twice as hard.’ Anthony couldn’t work on increasing his speed and bettering his qualifying performance on the factory Suzuki, which is not made available for training. Instead, he entered Spain’s CEV championship in 2016 on a Suzuki JEG Racing, competing in 5 of the 8 races and obtaining results beyond his aspirations. This season, he’s had to skip one race because it clashed with the endurance calendar (‘I’ve already used up my joker,’ he laughs), but he’ll be striving to win the championship anyway in the hope of picking up his 9th world title. ‘I’m not aiming to set any records,’ says the ever-modest Anthony. ‘I just take any wins that come my way.’

Vérifier dans les conditions les plus extrêmes la résistance à la perforation de nouveaux matériaux avant qu’ils ne forment la cuirasse du pilote d’Ice Speedway Daniil Ivanov. Puis peut-être la vôtre. Qui peut le plus, peut le moins.

This 28 mm-long spike made of sharp, cold steel resembles an instrument of torture. We use it to test the puncture resistance of new materials in the most extreme conditions. Then we turn those materials into body armour for Ice Speedway rider Daniil Ivanov. And maybe, someday soon, for you.

depuis notre service course vers nos bureaux de R&D –, que comptent les pneus d’une machine d’Ice Speedway. Autant d’appendices indispensables pour rouler à plus de 100 km/h guidon au sol sur la glace. Mais autant d’armes qui peuvent se retourner contre les pilotes lors des chutes qui émaillent ces courses à hauts risques. Si l’ergonomie (souplesse, poids, aisance…) de la combinaison de Daniil Ivanov, que vous avez découverte en pages 4-5 de votre Furymag, a été particulièrement travaillée, c’est la protection contre ces clous qui a nécessité la plus grande attention. Pour cela, Furygan s’est associé à DuPont, à l’origine du Nomex® (utilisé dans les combinaisons de pilotes auto, des pompiers…), ou encore du Kevlar®.

Ainsi, après plusieurs mois de développement autour d’un complexe (sandwich de matières), nous avons donné naissance à de nouveaux renforts multicouches destinés à être insérés dans le design de la combinaison de Daniil. Ils se composent de 6 matières, dont 3 tissages de Kevlar® différents. Deux sont issus de recherches précédemment menées et éprouvées par Furygan pour ses combinaisons de piste ; le dernier a été développé par Dupont pour ses aptitudes à résister à la perforation. L’ensemble a engendré une couche protectrice visant à protéger la peau des pilotes. Une démarche qui n’a pas échappé à la Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, qui a demandé une démonstration des performances de la combinaison Furygan, afin d’étudier de nouveaux standards d’équipement pour cette discipline.

En ce début de saison 2017, la nouvelle protection apportée par Furygan à Daniil Ivanov constitue un premier pas en avant, mais une pleine boîte de clous est déjà en partance. Car le travail avec notre partenaire continue et de nouvelles solutions anti-perforation sont à l’étude, pour qu’en matière de sécurité en Ice Speedway, Furygan enfonce le clou.

division to our R&D section – on the tyres of an Ice Speedway bike. They are an absolutely essential requirement when you’re riding the ice at over 100 km/h with your handlebars grazing the track surface. But they are also deadly weapons that can impale riders when they fall – a frequent occurrence in these dangerous races. We paid special attention to rider ergonomics when we styled Daniil Ivanov’s suit (see pages 4-5 of your Furymag), to make it incredibly supple, lightweight and comfortable. But our main objective was to offer impenetrable protection from those deadly spikes. That’s why Furygan tied up with DuPont, the inventor of Nomex® (used to make car racing suits, firefighters’ suits etc.) and Kevlar®.

After several months of work to develop a composite (a sandwich structure combining different materials), we created all-new multi-layered pads to build into the design of Daniil’s suit. It is composed of six materials, including three different Kevlar® weaves. Two of these are the result of Furygan’s own prior R&D to equip our race suits. DuPont developed the third one for its puncture-resistant properties. By combining the three, we’ve come up with a puncture-proof shield to safeguard riders’ skin from harm. Our new armour caught the interest of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (International Motorcycling Federation), which has requested a demo of the Furygan suit’s performance with a view to establishing new standards for Ice Speedway protective equipment. As the 2017 season gets underway, Furygan’s new protective gear for Daniil Ivanov is a step forward in this direction. Meanwhile, another boxful of spikes is already on its way to DuPont. Together, we’re developing further puncture-proof solutions to keep Ice Speedway riders safe from spikes in their Furygan suits.

Des débuts prometteurs

Iker Lecuona A promising start

Iker Lecuona n’avait que 16 ans, l’an passé, lorsqu’il remplaça Dominique Aegerter lors du Grand Prix de Grande-Bretagne, à Silverstone. Un essai concluant qui se prolongea et vit Iker prendre 6 départs en GP au guidon de la Kalex du team CarXpert Interwetter, le sponsor qui le soutenait en championnat CEV Repsol Moto2, où il était le plus jeune pilote du plateau. Fort de cette première expérience en mondial, Iker rempile avec CarXpert Interwetter pour la saison 2017, et ce, sous les couleurs Furygan, pour qui le Moto2 est synonyme de succès (titre mondial avec Tito Rabat en 2014 puis Johann Zarco en 2015 et 2016). Champion d’Espagne de Supermotard 2015, après un court passage en Pré-Moto 3 et des débuts en Kawasaki 65 KX et 85 KX Supermotard, Iker s’est fait repérer alors qu’il était invité à découvrir le CEV sur une Suter par le Swiss Junior Team. Grand bien lui en prit, puisqu’il roule désormais dans une structure performante pouvant l’amener au plus haut niveau. Conscient de son manque de roulage, Iker ne brûle pas les étapes, mais ne fait aucun complexe. Iker Lecuona, un pilote Furygan à suivre !

Iker Lecuona was only 16 when he stood in for Dominique Aegerter at last year’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Following that successful trial run, Iker was on the starting grid at another 6 GP races aboard the Kalex run by the CarXpert Interwetter team, previously his sponsor in the CEV Repsol Moto2 championship, where he was the youngest rider in the line-up. Iker has signed up with CarXpert Interwetter for the 2017 season wearing the Furygan colours, which have brought luck to previous riders (Tito Rabat scooped the world title in 2014, followed by Johann Zarco in 2015 and 2016). Winner of the supermoto 2015 Spanish round after a spell in the Pre-Moto 3 category following his debut in Kawasaki 65 KX and 85 KX Supermoto racing, Iker was spotted on his maiden run in the CEV riding a Suter for Swiss Junior Team. He’s come a long way since: he’s now part of a top-notch team that will help him scale new heights. He’s taking things one step at a time because he knows he needs more riding experience, but mark our words: Iker Lecuona is definitely a Furygan rider to watch out for.

Depuis ses débuts en Espagne en 2004, Valentin Debise écume les circuits, avec une prédilection pour le Supersport (3 saisons durant), après un passage en Moto2 (2010-2011), en Endurance et un traditionnel parcours en catégorie 125 et 250 en championnat de France. En 2016, il délaisse le Vieux-Continent pour s’attaquer au championnat US, Supersport MotoAmerica. Au guidon de la Suzuki 600 GSX-R du prestigieux Team Hammer qui entame sa 37e saison, « The Flying Frenchman » comme on le surnomme, décroche 11 podiums et 1 victoire à Road Atlanta pour le plus grand bonheur de sa nouvelle équipe, M4 Suzuki Sport Bike-Track Gear.com. Autant dire que Valentin a fait forte impression, à la fois par sa vitesse et sa constance dans la performance. Fort de cette saison enthousiasmante, avec une 3e place à la clé, le pilote Furygan de 25 ans n’envisage ni plus ni moins que le titre pour 2017 au terme des 16 rounds du championnat. De quoi célébrer l’essor de la panthère aux USA !

Valentin Debise / The American dream Valentin Debise has clocked up extensive racing experience since he debuted in Spain in 2004. After starting out on home territory, in the 125 and 250 French championships, he raced in Moto2 (2010-2011) and World Endurance before transitioning into Supersport. He completed two seasons in World Supersport before heading Stateside in 2016 to race Supersport MotoAmerica. Riding aboard an M4 Suzuki Sport Bike-Track Gear.com Suzuki 600 GSX-R for the prestigious Team Hammer, which is embarking on its 37th consecutive season this year, the man nicknamed ‘The Flying Frenchman’ scored 11 podiums and a Road Atlanta win in his debut season, to the delight of his brand-new team. Valentin impressed everyone with his speed and consistent excellence. After a spectacular 2016 performance culminating in a clear third-place finish, the 25-year-old Furygan rider is looking to sweep the title in the 16-round MotoAmerica in 2017. So the panther brand will be back in the spotlight across the pond this season.

En se gonflant grâce à un système de vapeur sous haute pression, il repasse chacun des 25 000 blousons en cuir que nous fabriquons par an. Ces produits rejoindront les pantalons en cuir, jeans et combinaisons pour un nettoyage et une inspection pièce par pièce minutieuse, suivie de la mise en place des protections et des étiquettes, avant leur conditionnement et leur départ pour les magasins.

By the time it reaches this steam-air form finisher, a Furygan jacket is almost ready to leave our Nîmes factory. The form bag expands gradually as a high-pressure steam cycle is released, gently shaping and smoothing out every single jacket we produce: around 25,000 jackets each year. Next, the jackets are cleaned and individually inspected, together with our other finished garments – leather pants, jeans and suits. We fit in the protectors and add the stickers before the jackets are packed and shipped to stores.

En 1972, Furygan lance son gant « grand froid », l’Elephant, du nom de la célèbre concentration se déroulant depuis 1956 outre-Rhin (“Elefantentreffen”, en allemand). Initialement, il s’agissait d’un rassemblement de side-cars Zündapp K601, surnommés « Éléphants verts ». Au fil des années, les Eléphants sont devenus un rallye iconique, réservé aux purs et durs capables d’affronter un froid intense, la neige, le verglas… fin janvier-début février. Il y a 45 ans, “Monsieur Jacques”, fondateur de Furygan, a voulu rendre hommage à ces milliers de valeureux motards en baptisant “Elephant” ce gant exceptionnel, conçu pour des conditions extrêmes. Inscrit au patrimoine de la moto, il s’est vendu à 100 000 exemplaires ! Aujourd’hui, fort du succès de sa tenue Coldmaster (pages 77 et 91), Furygan perpétue la tradition et développe en ce moment, au sein du Motion Lab, un nouveau gant grand froid, qui, lui aussi, devrait faire date. In 1972, Furygan came up with its ‘cold glove’, named the ‘Elephant’ in tribute to the celebrated motorcycle rally held every winter in Germany, in late January or early February, ever since 1956 (it is called ‘Elefantentreffen’ in German). It was initially a gathering of Zündapp K601 side cars, nicknamed ‘green elephants’ because they were olive green. Over the years, Elefantentreffen has become an iconic rally attracting die-hard bikers capable of riding through freezing cold and snow on ice-covered roads. Furygan’s founder Monsieur Jacques paid homage 45 years ago to the thousands of courageous riders who make their way to Germany each year by taking an extraordinary glove designed for use in extreme weather conditions and naming it ‘Elephant’. Since then, the glove has become a must-have for coldweather riding, with sales so far exceeding 100,000! Furygan has kept the tradition going with its bestselling Coldmaster suit (see pages 77 and 91), and our Motion Lab is currently designing a brand-new coldweather glove to keep your hands toasty warm this coming winter.

At only 19, Jordan has quite a bit of experience under his belt. Having started out as a motocross racer in his native South Africa, where he crossed swords with Brad Binder, he went to live in the UK to give full rein to his passion for speed. He raced on a Yamaha 50 TZR aged 8, went on to Honda 125 RS bikes at 11, and competed in the 2012 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup on a KTM. In 2014 he secured the Motostar Moto3 championship, also aboard a KTM. Then he swapped his 50-bhp, 82-kg KTM 250 RC 250 R for a 150-bhp, 170-kg Kawasaki ZX-6R to go after the Pirelli Moto National Superstock 600 title, which he lifted after his second season in 2016.

Following a shaky debut, he notched up 8 podiums (including 4 wins) in 12 races with the NMT No Limits team, which picked up its second consecutive title. It was a stunning achievement for a 19-year-old rider. With 2 titles to his name after 3 seasons, Jordan is following in the footsteps of Ben Spies: he’ll be flying the Furygan and Kawasaki colours high as he makes the step up to Superstock 1000 in 2017.

Premiers tours de roues en motocross, dans son Afrique du Sud natale où il se tire la bourre avec Brad Binder, puis il s’exile en Grande-Bretagne, pour vivre sa passion de la vitesse. Fort de ses 2 titres en 3 saisons, Jordan, inspiré par Ben Spies, entend faire briller les couleurs Kawasaki et Furygan en poursuivant sa trajectoire en Superstock 1000.

Every Furygan jacket is made of materials stitched together using high-denier, high-tenacity polyamide or polyester yarn. The R&D team at our Motion Lab in Nîmes carry out tear-resistance tests to check the solidity of the seams (20,000 tests to date). The star feature of these jackets: triple stitching, with a fold-over top stitch protecting the primary layer of stitching so the seam won’t come apart if it scrapes an abrasive surface.

Alors pilote Tech 3 en Grands Prix aux côtés d’Olivier Jacque, William Costes prend la pose pour le photographe Dingo et met en avant sa combinaison Furygan, gage de sécurité en toutes circonstances. 20 ans plus tard, William enseigne le pilotage à l’école BMC, accueillant 700 stagiaires par an.

TOMER SISLEY Comédien, pilote d’hélicoptère, de voitures de course, humoriste, cascadeur, scénariste, joueur de poker, parachutiste, patron de restaurant... Tomer Sisley enfourche aussi tous les jours sa Ducati Multistrada, sans laquelle il “ne pourrait jamais boucler tout ce qu’il a à réaliser dans une journée”. Oui, car il fait aussi de la moto. Et il adore ça.

French actor Tomer Sisley has many strings to his bow. He’s a restaurant owner, helicopter pilot, race car driver, humorist, stuntman, scriptwriter, poker player, skydiver – and motorcycle rider. He swears by his Ducati Multistrada. ‘Without my bike, I’d never get through all the stuff that needs doing on a typical day,’ he says.

Comment es-tu venu à la moto ?

Quand je suis arrivé en France, à l’âge de 8 ans (N.D.L.R. : Tomer est né à Berlin), mon père venait d’acheter une Goldwing. Une 1100 de 1982 de mémoire. Il m’amenait tous les jours à l’école à moto. On habitait dans le Sud-Est, vers Antibes, puis Biot, Bar-sur-Loup… Du coup, on faisait parfois pas mal de route pour aller en cours. J’étais toujours à moto, c’était naturel. Et ça continue de l’être. La moto est une évidence pour moi. Je me souviens que quand je passais avec mon père, tout le monde nous regardait. Comme si on roulait dans une Rolls ! On n’en croisait pas, des motos comme ça, dans le coin. Elle semblait énorme, imposante par rapport aux modèles de l’époque. J’avais la sensation d’être assis sur un engin d’exception. C’est peutêtre ça aussi qui m’a fait kiffer !

When did you get into motorcycling?

When I got to France at the age of 8 [Tomer was born in Berlin – Ed.]. My dad had just bought himself a Goldwing. A 1982 GL1100, if I remember right. He used to take me to school on it every day. We lived in the south of France – near Antibes, and then in Biot and Bar-sur-Loup.

So sometimes it was quite a long ride to school. I was always on the bike; it felt totally natural.

And it still is. A bike is just the obvious choice for me. I remember everyone turning around to look when I rode by with my dad – like we were in a Rolls-Royce! You didn’t see motorcycles like that in those parts back then. It seemed so huge and imposing compared to the bikes of the time. I felt like I was sitting on an extraordinary machine. Maybe that’s partly why I got such a kick out of it!

Quelle a été ta première moto ?

J’ai repris la Goldwing de mon père. Cette moto sur laquelle je m’asseyais pour aller à l’école quand j’avais 8 ans, j’ai fini par la piloter quand j’ai eu 22-23 ans !

What was your first bike?

I took over my dad’s Goldwing. I sat on the back of it to go to school when I was 8, and I ended up riding that same bike at 22 or 23.

Donc, si on a bien compris, tu as piqué la moto de ton père, mais aussi son blouson ?

(Rires) Oui, c’est un peu ça ! Je roule en effet souvent avec le Furygan de mon père. Je voulais le mettre aujourd’hui pour les photos mais je suis en plein déménagement, entre deux appartements. Et il n’était pas dans le bon. J’ai énormément d’affection pour ce blouson. Parce qu’il appartenait à mon père, bien sûr, mais aussi parce qu’il a de la gueule ! C’est celui que je mets le plus souvent, il a un look d’enfer et une patine que seules les années peuvent donner (N.D.L.R. : il s’agit d’un Furygan GTO du milieu des années 70). Il est un peu craquelé, usé, j’adore. Malheureusement, j’ai chuté avec, il a été un peu éraflé, et c’est pour ça que vous me l’avez réparé.

So you nicked your dad’s bike. And his jacket too, is that right?

[Laughs]. Yes, that’s right! I often wear my Dad’s Furygan to ride. I wanted to put it on for the photos today, but I’m right in the middle of moving to a new apartment, and it’s somewhere in my old place. I’m very fond of that jacket – because it belonged to my dad, obviously, but also because it’s got so much swagger. It’s the one I wear most of the time. It looks amazing, and it has a patina you can only get with time [The jacket is a mid-1970s Furygan GTO – Ed.]. It’s got a few cracks, a bit of wear and tear – I love that. Unfortunately, I fell off once when I was wearing it, and it got slightly scratched. You guys restored it for me.

Tu fais tes cascades, pilotes des voitures, des hélicos… Gamin, la moto, ça a été ton premier shoot d’adrénaline ?

Non, pas vraiment. Mon père n’a jamais fait de circuit, ce n’était pas un motard qui vivait pour la moto. Il ne roulait pas pour la vitesse. C’était un moyen de locomotion extrêmement pratique.

Son truc, c’est la liberté, il adore les voiliers, et en moto, tu retrouves ça. D’ailleurs, quand j’ai commencé à me déplacer à Paris à moto, à l’époque, j’avais acheté une Fazer 1000. J’ai pu échapper au métro et enfin retrouver le plaisir de me déplacer. Avant ça, aller à un rencard, attendre le métro, prendre le bus, c’était… chiant ! Et tout à coup, se déplacer d’un point A à un point B est devenu fun. Ça fait 20 ans que je fais ça tous les jours. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, j’ai pris du plaisir à chaque fois que je me suis assis sur la moto. Quel que soit le modèle !

You do stunts, drive race cars and pilot helicopters. What gave you your first adrenaline rush when you were a kid? A motorcycle?

No, not really. My dad never went riding on track. He wasn’t the kind of guy who lives and breathes motorcycling. He didn’t ride to go fast. It was just a very practical way of getting around.

What he likes is being free. He’s mad about sailboats, and motorcycles give you a similar kind of feel. When I first started riding a motorbike in Paris (I’d bought a Fazer 100) and managed to escape the metro – that’s when I finally started to enjoy getting around town. Before that, when I had a meeting lined up, it was so damn boring having to wait for the metro or take a bus. All of a sudden I was having fun getting from Point A to Point B. I’ve been riding every single day for the past 20 years, and I feel good whenever I get on a motorcycle. Any motorcycle!

Goldwing 1100, Fazer 1000, Multistrada 1200… tu sembles préférer les grosses ?

Je ne me suis jamais posé la question ! J’ai grandi avec les grosses cylindrées, donc c’était naturel pour moi. Je ne voyais pas l’intérêt de prendre un petit moteur. La plus petite moto que j’ai eue, c’était un 1000. Après la Fazer j’ai eu un K1200R, super machine. Mais aussi, plus récemment, deux Ducati Diavel.

A Goldwing 1100, a Fazer 1000, a Multistrada 1200: it looks like you prefer big bikes.

I’ve never thought about it. I grew up with big-engine bikes, so it was natural for me. I couldn’t see the point of buying a small motorcycle. The smallest bike I’ve ever had was a 1000cc. After the Fazer, I bought a K1200R – a fantastic machine. But I’ve also had two Ducati Diavel bikes more recently.

Aujourd’hui, il y a une moto que tu rêverais de posséder ?

La dernière création de Ludovic Lazareth me plaît bien, c’est un truc incroyable : une moto sur quatre roues, avec un moteur 4,7 l Maserati qui fait office de cadre, une seule vitesse, 470 chevaux, 500 kg… Entre deux feux rouges, ça doit être devant tout ce qui roule. Mais très sincèrement, je vais te dire, à chaque fois qu’on m’a posé le cul sur une moto, quelle qu’elle soit, même des motos auxquelles je ne suis pas du tout habitué comme la Panigale, j’ai pris du plaisir.

What’s your dream bike at the moment?

I really like the latest motorcycle from custom creator Ludovic Lazareth. It’s an incredible machine: a quad bike built around a 4.7-litre Maserati engine with a single-speed transmission.

It puts out 470 bhp and weighs 500 kg. I’d be way ahead of anything else on wheels between two traffic lights. But honestly, I’m telling you, every time I’ve put my butt in the saddle of a bike – whatever the bike, even models I’m not used to, like the Panigale – I’ve enjoyed it.

Quelle que soit la météo aussi ?

Attends, pour faire court, je fais de la moto tous les jours ! Je m’en fiche qu’il pleuve. Je roule même sous la neige, il peut faire - 15 °C ! Si tu es bien équipé, la pluie, le froid, ce n’est pas un problème. Quand je me fais surprendre et que je me retrouve trempé, je ne prends pas de plaisir, évidemment, mais avec les bonnes fringues, ça roule ! Je ne prends la voiture que quand je dois déménager, ou emmener mes enfants à l’école.

Si on te propose un baptême sur piste derrière un pilote, tu dis quoi ?

Grave ! Faut faire !

Whatever the weather conditions?

Hang on, that’s a no-brainer. I ride every day! I don’t care if it’s raining. I ride even when it’s snowing; it could be minus 15 degrees Celsius outside. If you’re wearing the right gear, the rain or the cold isn’t an issue. Obviously, I don’t enjoy the ride if I’m caught unawares and I get drenched, but with the right gear, no problem. I only get the car out when I’m moving house or I need to take my kids to school.

If you could go pillion on a track with a famous rider, would you do it?

Totally! I’d do it like a shot!

« Contrairement à l’univers sportif, où les couleurs explosent, tout ce qui a trait au vintage se veut souvent grave – j’ai presque envie de dire “d’une sombre sobriété” –, et c’est ainsi que ça fonctionne. Imaginez la même photo avec des gens qui rigolent, elle ne serait pas crédible ! »

Par son parcours atypique, sa détermination et son coup de gaz, Lucas Mahias fait figure d’ovni dans les paddocks. Pilote Furygan depuis 2014, il roulera cette saison en Supersport avec le GTR Racing au guidon d’une Yamaha R6.

« J’irai chercher les dixièmes, car j’ai le feu en moi »

LUCAS MAHIAS Lucas Mahias ? Une bouille d’adolescent, avec la coiffure ad hoc, un esprit libre et un mental de guerrier. Forcément, on ne ressort pas intact d’une rencontre avec ce pilote à la carrière singulière. Premiers tours de roues à vélo et, déjà, des sliders en carton pour poser le genou par terre. Puis c’est la période stunt, en scooter, où il se débrouille plutôt bien. Il en a d’ailleurs conservé un goût certain pour les facéties sur 2 et 4 roues et une belle virtuosité dès lors qu’il s’agit de jouer les équilibristes… Vient ensuite sa première moto, une Kawasaki ER-5 tout ce qu’il y a de plus basique, une bécane de moto école.

Avec, il se fait vite repérer par Serge Nuques, qui deviendra son mentor, s’investissant sans compter pour ce poulain débordant de vitalité aux accents d’étalon. C’est le temps de la débrouille. Pourtant motard, le papa de Lucas ne veut pas entendre parler de moto. En cause ? Les résultats scolaires de son fils, qui ne tiennent pas leurs promesses. « Je ne foutais rien », avouet-il… Pour les stages de 3 jours sur circuit, sa maman le dépose discrètement à Pau, où il plante la tente. Sans un sou en poche, il quémande de l’essence et récupère des pneus usés dans la poubelle du circuit. Son attaque, son énergie et son envie – déjà –, lui attirent la sympathie des autres pilotes, qui jouent le jeu et lui filent un coup de main. La légende Mahias est en marche…

His ruffled hair makes him look like an overgrown teenager, and he always goes his own sweet way, but Lucas Mahias has the mindset of a warrior. It’s hard not to be impressed by this rider’s unusual route into racing. He did high speed cornering on his bicycle as a kid, wearing knee sliders he made out of cardboard.

Then he got into stunt riding on a scooter, and found he had a talent for it. He still enjoys fooling around on bikes and four-wheelers, and can balance a wheelie with the best of them. His first motorcycle was a Kawasaki ER-5: a bog-standard bike, the kind used in riding schools. French racer Serge Nuques spotted Lucas on the bike and appointed himself mentor to the lad. Won over by Lucas’s keenness and vitality, Nuques put all his energy into training his new protégé.

But Lucas had to be resourceful. Though his dad was a motorcyclist, he refused to let Lucas have anything to do with bikes because of his poor school reports.

‘I was a slacker,’ Lucas admits. His mother would quietly drop him off at the Pau circuit, where he would pitch a tent and take part in three-day training sessions.

He didn’t have a penny, so he scrounged fuel and rooted through the rubbish bins at the circuit to find used tyres. His flat-out riding style and sheer enthusiasm won him the sympathy of other riders, who pitched in to give him a helping hand.

The legend of Lucas Mahias was being written.

‘I’ll go after each missing tenth, because I’m all fired up’ En 2008, Lucas s’inscrit à la première édition de la Michelin Power Cup sur une Honda 600 CBR d’occasion, achetée en partie avec les 2 000 € hérités de son grand-père, sa maman ayant assuré le complément. À 21 ans, il a faim et soif de victoires. Il se classe 3e de la première épreuve et gagne les 2 manches à Pau, quasiment à domicile. Il termine vice-champion, malgré une course manquée, en concurrence de date avec l’examen de son BEP de mécanique moto. Les saisons s’enchaînent autant que les expériences en Endurance, Trophée Pirelli 600, CEV Moto 2… des podiums, des victoires, un autre titre, des chutes aussi (une quarantaine dans la même saison)… Jusqu’à cette année 2014, millésime de moisson exceptionnelle où, sur une Yamaha R6 Dark Dog Academy, il gagne les 12 manches du championnat de France Supersport tout en décrochant une place de 4e pilote en Endurance dans le team GMT 94.

At 21, he was hungry to succeed. He placed third in the first race and won the two rounds held in Pau, his hometown. He went on to compete in events such as the Endurance championship, the Pirelli 600 Trophy and the FIM CEV Moto 2 European championship, racking up podium spots, wins, a second title – and crashes (40-odd falls in a single season). 2014 was an exceptional year for Lucas: he won all 12 France Supersport rounds on a Yamaha R6 Dark Dog Academy, and the GMT94 team took him on as standby rider in the endurance world championship.

Fort de ses succès, Lucas espérait « tout naturellement » un bon guidon dans un team de premier plan. Que nenni, il enchaîne les mauvais plans et les désillusions tout en faisant des étincelles à la fois en Endurance (où il décroche le titre mondial Pilotes en 2016) mais aussi en remplaçant des officiels au pied levé, tels Sylvain Barrier en WSBK ou Florian Marino en Superstock 1000, et gagne, un coup sur une Kawasaki, un coup sur une Yamaha. Il démontre une incroyable capacité à enchaîner les courses (une bonne vingtaine par saison) et les performances quels que soient les championnats et les mécaniques, sans se poser trop de questions, sur des machines ou des circuits qu’il découvre. « Je ne me prends pas la tête avec les réglages, je me concentre sur la course », concède-t-il. Lucas Mahias carbure au plaisir, celui de surfer l’asphalte, le couteau entre les dents, et de passer en tête le drapeau à damiers en ne lâchant jamais rien. Il a également gagné en maturité et s’est acheté une conduite pour se positionner comme un pilote bankable dont le profil peut plus facilement séduire les teams prestigieux, très sensibles à leur communication. Et ça marche, puisqu’il sera en lice pour le titre mondial sur une Yamaha officielle, pour la plus grande joie de milliers de fans qui adulent ce champion populaire ayant le sens du spectacle.

With all those wins behind him, Lucas was convinced he would be offered a contract with a top-level team. Instead, he made a lot of wrong choices and experienced several disappointments, though he turned in some attention-grabbing performances, picking up the endurance riders’ championship in 2016 and winning races on Kawasaki and Yamaha as a last-minute stand-in for factory team riders such as Sylvain Barrier in WSBK and Florian Marino in the Superstock 1000 championship. He has an amazing ability to perform well in back-to-back races in a variety of championships, and is totally unfazed by being on a new bike or circuit. ‘I don’t get hassled about bike settings,’ he says.

‘I just focus on the race.’ Lucas is fuelled by the sheer pleasure of hitting the track, getting into the thick of the action and giving no quarter in his fight to be first past the chequered flag. He has striven to become more level-headed in recent times in the hope of appealing to the more prestigious teams, who are notoriously image-conscious. The strategy seems to have paid off: Lucas will be competing for the World Supersport title on a factory Yamaha, to the joy of thousands of fans, who adore this easy-going rider’s flamboyant style.

« Je m’inflige mes roulages comme une souffrance »

Sa capacité à affoler les chronos autant que celle à bondir d’une machine à l’autre pour en tirer la quintessence ne sont pas le fruit du hasard.

Lucas Mahias, doué à la base, entretient et cultive cet avantage à travers un entraînement essentiellement basé sur la pratique de la moto, en vitesse, mais aussi en supermotard, enduro, trial… au guidon de machines qu’il possède en 2 exemplaires, histoire d’en faire profiter les copains. « Mes roulages sont hyper calibrés, je me les inflige comme une souffrance. Lors de mes stages avec Serge Nuques, j’ai appris à voir grand et en faire un max pour qu’il en reste un peu. Je sais ce que je veux, et j’essaie de tirer un enseignement de chaque situation. Par exemple, faire un tour de circuit une main dans le dos, pour être prêt à ramener une moto au stand avec un demi-guidon cassé. Ceux qui ne l’ont pas essayé ne sauront pas comment réagir si la situation se présente, moi si ! Je roule souvent sur un circuit de karting, avec une 125 YZF, à la manière de Johann Zarco, qui en a vu l’intérêt avant les autres.

Je fais 6 manches de 20 à 25 tours que je boucle en une minute, et dès le 3e tour, je m’efforce d’être à cinq dixièmes de mon meilleur temps, j’essaie toujours de battre mon temps dans le dernier tour, et je me mets des pénalités sous forme de tours supplémentaires lorsque je n’atteins pas

mes objectifs. C’est un exercice très physique, qui requiert de la régularité et de la précision. Je roule également sur le bitume en supermotard avec des pneus de cross, qui obligent à être doux sur les gaz, pour faire glisser la moto, explique Lucas, qui a également développé un mental à toute épreuve. À chaque fois que je galère, c’est un truc de plus que j’assimile et que je pourrai utiliser en course lorsqu’il restera 2 tours et qu’il me manquera cinq dixièmes. J’irai les chercher, car j’ai le feu en moi. Avant les 24 Heures, j’ai voulu me mettre dans une situation où, une fois engagé, je ne pouvais plus reculer. Avec un pote, en hiver, on a remonté une rivière de nuit, avec de l’eau jusqu’aux genoux et parfois au bassin, trébuchant entre sable et rochers pendant 6 heures. Je ne savais pas par où sortir, j’étais obligé d’aller au bout, comme en course. » Pour tutoyer un peu plus les sommets, Lucas travaille également son approche de la course, pour ne plus se faire déborder par ses émotions. « Déjà, je me dis que tout ce qui m’arrive, même le négatif, est impossible à changer. C’est ainsi, fallait que ça se passe, et c’est parfois un mal pour un bien – comme cette blessure aux vertèbres avec la Kawasaki en SBK qui m’a empêché de rester dans le team, mais qui m’a finalement permis de rouler en Supersport dans de bonnes conditions. J’essaie aussi de ne pas me mettre la pression, car c’est en

étant relâché que ça marche. Plus tu es détendu, plus tu es à l’aise, plus tu vas vite. Dans le passé, j’ai cédé à la colère, je me suis mis des coups dans la tronche, je m’en voulais de ne pas avoir réussi.

Cette colère était aussi le reflet de mon engagement. Pour me qualifier, je n’ai pas besoin d’écouter de la musique qui m’énerve, je suis à bloc, j’ai toujours été comme ça, déjà gamin. Désormais, grâce à l’aide de Gregg Black, j’arrive à me calmer, à éviter de monter en pression lorsque ça ne va pas », analyse avec clairvoyance Lucas, qui s’infuse quand même 20 expressos dans un quotidien où tout est parfaitement orchestré, millimétré, tiré au cordeau, comme ses trajectoires.

Derrière le showman se cache en fait une véritable machine de guerre au chrono, qui met à profit chaque instant pour progresser dans son art de la gagne, soucieux du moindre détail. En témoignent son jusqu’au-boutisme en termes de préparation et de nettoyage de ses motos ou ses exigences quant au choix de son matériel. Chaque saison, dans nos ateliers de Nîmes, nous lui réalisons avec passion une dizaine de cuirs sur mesure, assortis aux gants et bottes.

‘I inflict my training sessions upon myself, like suffering’ Lucas’s ability to post record times and get the best out of any machine he happens to ride is not just happenstance. He nurtures his innate talent with plenty of training, regularly racing in speed, supermoto, enduro and trials events. He owns two of each kind of bike, one for himself and one for his friends.

‘My training sessions are planned in microscopic detail,’ he says. ‘I inflict them upon myself, like suffering. When I was training with Serge Nuques, I learnt to be ambitious, go all out and pick up something new each time. I know what I want, and I try to learn from every situation. Like riding around a track with a hand behind my back, so I’ll be ready if I have to get a bike with a broken half-handlebar back to the pits. If you haven’t tried it, you won’t know how to react when that happens. I often ride on a karting circuit with a 125 YZF, like Johann Zarco, who was the first to realize it could be useful. I do 6 rounds of 20 to 25 laps inside of a minute. From the third lap on, I push myself to complete the lap in five-tenths of my best time. I always try to beat my own record on the last lap, and I give myself penalties in the form of extra laps when I don’t reach my targets. It’s a very physically demanding exercise, which calls for regularity and precision. I also ride on-road on a supermoto with motocross tyres, which forces you to go easy on the throttle to slide the bike.’

Lucas has also developed rock-solid mental toughness. ‘Each time I struggle I learn something new that I can use in a race. When there are two laps to go and I need those missing five-tenths, I’ll go after them, because I’m all fired up. Before the 24 Hours Motos, I wanted to put myself in a situation I wouldn’t be able to get out of once I’d committed to it. A pal of mine and I walked up a river one night in winter. We were up to our knees in the water – up to our hips in some places. We stumbled our way across that stony, sandy river bed for six hours. I didn’t know where we would find ourselves if we got out. We had to go right to the end, like in a race.’

Ever focused on winning, Lucas also works on his approach to the race to ensure he won’t be overcome by emotion. ‘I tell myself I can’t change anything I go through, even if it’s negative. That’s just the way it is, and all I can do is wait for it to be over. Sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise, like the time I fractured some vertebrae when I fell off my Kawasaki in SBK. Because of that I couldn’t stay on the team, but it opened up an opportunity to race in Supersport with a good contract. I also try not to put pressure on myself, because it’s when you let go of the stress that things go smoothly.

The more relaxed you are, the more at ease, the faster you ride. I’ve given in to anger in the past; I’ve beaten myself up, blamed myself for not win-

ning. But then my anger was also a mark of my commitment. I don’t need to listen to music to get me pumped; I’m already raring to go. I’ve always been like that, even as a kid. Now, with Gregg Black’s help, I’ve learnt to stay calm, to stop freaking out when things aren’t going right.’

But Lucas still downs 20 espresso shots in the course of an average day. His days are as meticulously planned as his trajectories. Behind his exuberant façade, Lucas is a timing-obsessed rider who puts every second to use in his quest for victory. He pays attention to the smallest detail, from preparing and cleaning his bike to his choice of gear. We custom-build a dozen leathers for him each season in our Nîmes factory, together with gloves and boots – he insists on white boots and gloves. “LE DRIFT DE PRÉCISION EST MA MARQUE DE FABRIQUE”

Matt, quel est ton parcours dans l’univers du stunt et du drift ? À l’âge de 10 ans, je mettais la main sur un quad que je commençais déjà à bricoler. J’ai enchaîné avec un scooter qui passait son temps en wheeling ou en travers (rires), puis j’ai acheté une Suzuki SV 650 pour faire du stunt sur des parkings. J’ai enchaîné avec une Yamaha FZR 600 et une Suzuki GSX-R 600, une machine donnée pour morte que j’ai ressuscitée. Entre 2003 et 2005, avec mes frères Arnaud et Florent, je faisais des démos. Cela m’a donné envie d’aller plus loin : je me suis mis à mon compte, en devenant rider professionnel.

C’est une de tes passions, la mécanique auto et moto ?

Oui, j’ai une formation de mécanicien auto, et j’aime travailler sur mes machines, pour des raisons économiques et pour être sûr qu’elles sont toujours parfaites pour mes shows.

Tu driftais aussi avec une Nissan 200 SX. Y a-t-il des ponts entre les drifts auto et moto ?

Oui, les techniques sont proches, et tu retrouves un comportement semblable au niveau de la glisse sur 2 et 4 roues… Ce qui me laisse à penser qu’un drifter moto peut faire un bon drifter auto en peu de temps (rires) !

Une moto de 600 cm3, c’est la bonne cylindrée pour le stunt ?

Oui, car on effectue beaucoup de corrections en roulant et la 600 n’est pas trop puissante.

Une 1 000 cm3 serait trop violente. Concernant le drift, c’est différent, car il faut un châssis qui tienne bien la route, et un moteur qui délivre beaucoup de puissance et de couple.

Et tu es accro au moteur 3 cylindres Triumph ?

J’aime bien, à la fois pour la sonorité, le couple, la performance et son caractère rageur.

Qu’est-ce qui fait ta spécificité ?

Le drift est ma marque de fabrique. Je l’ai intégré à mes spectacles dès 2007. En 2008, je l’ai appliqué aux circuits, à la manière du supermotard et du flat-track. Aujourd’hui, tout le monde drifte sur les parkings. Moi, je continue à utiliser un bras oscillant d’origine sur ma Triumph 675, alors que depuis 2-3 ans, les bras rallongés se multiplient, car ils facilitent la glisse.

Fort de ta notoriété, tu cartonnes sur YouTube ?

C’est vrai qu’il y a pas mal de vidéos qui circulent. Je dois approcher les 20 millions de vues.

De quoi susciter des vocations (rires) !

Le style Mekatrix, c’est aussi et surtout une quête de précision, non ?

Je travaille là-dessus en positionnant des plots sur les circuits, pour que les spectateurs puissent voir les points de rotation exacts.

Et quel bonheur prend-on à stunter ou à drifter ?

Faire le plein de sensations fortes, sentir la moto dériver tout en parvenant à rester dans les clous, exploiter sa machine au maximum car on utilise 100 % des 125 chevaux. Le drift permet également d’assimiler des choses applicables en vitesse, car on apprend à repousser ses limites.

Qu’est-ce qui fait la difficulté de l’exercice ?

De ne pas tomber ! Je mets un point d’honneur à ne pas chuter, et c’est ce qui freine un peu ma progression. Je ne passe que les tricks que je maîtrise parfaitement, ce qui nécessite du temps. À l’entraînement, je suis à 80 % ; et dans mes shows, à 70 % car, en présence de spectateurs, la sécurité doit être encore plus grande.

Comme le FMX, le surf ou le skate, le stunt génère-t-il une culture ou un mode de vie ?

C’est un mode de vie. J’évolue autour de cela : la préparation des Triumph 675 Daytona, les entraînements, la quinzaine de shows que je présente… En parallèle, je travaille 2 jours par semaine dans une société qui vend en ligne des articles liés au drift. Donc ça m’est impossible d’y échapper ! À propos d’entraînement, comme t’y prends-tu ?

J’ai la chance d’avoir accès au circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours (58), à 50 kilomètres de chez moi. Pour rentabiliser mon déplacement, je ride toute la journée, souvent seul.

Physiquement, comment te prépares-tu ?

J’ai fait 10 ans de gym, entre 4 ans et 14 ans, et j’en conserve une certaine souplesse… ce qui me permet de vivre sur cet acquis et de ne pas être obligé de faire du sport (rires) ! Mais à 35 ans, ça me titille de m’y remettre !

Dans quels vêtements te sens-tu bien pour rider ?

Pour le stunt, je ne me sépare jamais de mes Heelys, des chaussures qui intègrent une roulette sous chaque talon, et je m’équipe d’un jeans Kevlar 01 Furygan qui intègre des protections D3O aux hanches et genoux, d’un blouson en cuir vintage, et de gants mi-cuir, mi-textile offrant une grande flexibilité. Pour le drift, j’utilise une combinaison Furygan Dark Apex avec dorsale D3O XP1 et des bottes. Furygan me fournit des gants encore plus renforcés, qui résistent à l’abrasion lorsque je pose la main au sol en virage.

Un conseil à un futur stunteur ?

Il ne faut pas forcer les choses, mais y aller progressivement, en douceur, sentir le truc venir.

‘PRECISION DRIFTING IS MY HALLMARK’ Matt, how did you get into stunting and drifting?

When I was 10, I got hold of a quad bike and started fooling around with it. I moved on a scooter, and spent all my time doing wheelies and twists [Laughs]. Then I bought a Suzuki 650 SV to do stunt tricks in parking lots. After that I went on to a Yamaha 600 FZR, and then a Suzuki 600 GSX-R. That machine was ready for the scrap heap. I got it up and running again. From 2003 to 2005, I did stunt demos with my brothers Arnaud and Florent. Then I went one step further and set up on my own as a pro rider.

That’s one of your passions, isn’t it? – motorcycle and car mechanics?

Yes, I’m a trained car mechanic, and I enjoy doing my own repairs – to save money, and to make sure my bikes are in perfect nick for my shows.

You’ve drifted a Nissan 200SX. How does car drifting compare to bike drifting?

The techniques are similar, and you’ll find that a four-wheel machine behaves pretty much the same as a two-wheeler during a drift. So I reckon a motorcycle drifter can become a good car drifter in quite a short time [Laughs].

Is a 600cc a good-size bike for stunting?

Yes, because you do a lot of correcting when stunt riding, and a 600cc isn’t too powerful. À 1000cc would be too brutal. It’s different when you’re drifting: you need a hard-wearing chassis and an engine that pumps out plenty of power and torque.

You’re sold on the Triumph three-cylinder.

Yes, I like everything about it: the sound, the torque, the performance. It’s a raging beast.

What’s your speciality?

Drifting is my hallmark. I’ve included it in my shows since 2007. In 2008 I started drifting on circuits, like supermoto and flat track racers. These days, everybody drifts in parking lots. I still use the stock swingarm on my Triumph 675, whereas more and more people have been switching to elongated swingarms in the last two or three years because they make drifting easier.

You’re a well-known name, so I suppose you get a lot of You Tube views.

I know many of my videos get shared. I get around 20 million views: a good reason to follow in my footsteps [Laughs].

Precision is another hallmark of the Mekatrix style.

I work on it by placing cones on the track so onlookers can see the exact rotation point.

What’s so great about stunting and drifting?

Experiencing that adrenaline rush, feeling the motorcycle drift while staying totally in control, and getting the most out of your bike – I use 100 % of its 125bhp output. Drifting also teaches you stuff you can use in speed racing, because you learn to push back your limits.

What’s the hardest thing?

Not falling off! I make it a point of honour not to fall, which tends to slow my progress. I only perform a stunt I’m flawless at, and that takes time. I’m at 80% of my capacity in training; 70% at my shows, because spectator safety is paramount.

Is stunt riding a culture or lifestyle, like FMX, surfing, skateboarding?

It’s a lifestyle. My whole life is geared around stunt riding: preparing my Triumph 675 Daytona bikes; training; performing 15-odd shows. And I work two days a week for an online store that sells drifting equipment. It’s impossible to get away from it!

How do you train?

I’m lucky enough to have access to the Nevers Magny-Cours circuit, around 50 km from where I live. I ride all day – usually on my own – to make the return trip worthwhile.

What about physical training?

I did gymnastics for 10 years, from the age of 4 to 14, and I’m still pretty limber. So it’s not like I have to work out [Laughs]. But now I’ve turned 35, I’ve been thinking I should take up sport again.

What do you wear for total comfort when you’re riding?

When I’m doing tricks, I need my Heelys – shoes with a wheel in the heel. I wear a pair of Kevlar Furygan 01 jeans with D3O hip and knee pads, a vintage leather jacket, and a pair of partleather, part-textile gloves for extra flexibility. When I’m drifting, I wear a Furygan Dark Apex suit with a D3O XP1 back protector and boots. Furygan supplies me with abrasion-resistant specially reinforced gloves for protection when I’m drifting and dragging my hand.

What advice would you give a budding stunter?

Don’t push things. Take it nice and slow, step by step, and feel yourself getting the hang of it.

Thibaut, comment es-tu venu au stunt ?

Après des débuts en scooter et 50 à boîte, à 15-16 ans, j’ai retapé une Yamaha TZR 50 pour un usage stunt, avec frein arrière au guidon. Je regardais des vidéos sur Internet et je m’entraînais sur un parking. En 2010, je me suis inscrit au Stunt Bike Show de Bordeaux, et j’ai gagné ma catégorie.

J’étais grave motivé pour continuer, alors j’ai acheté une Suzuki GSX-R 600. Ma mère m’a soutenu, à une condition : que je termine mes études. J’ai passé mon bac, puis mon BTS en commerce spécialisé yachting, et en 2013, j’ai décidé de me consacrer au stunt, avec l’espoir d’en vivre.

Comment t’entraînes-tu ?

Je fais 2 heures de sport par jour pour travailler le gainage, le cardio, les renforcements musculaires, l’équilibre et la souplesse, et 5 sessions de 2 heures de moto par semaine.

Tu travailles aussi avec un coach mental.

Que t’apporte-t-il ?

Il me permet de me focaliser sur ma discipline en canalisant mes émotions et mon énergie, car je suis mon propre ennemi (rires).

Que représente ton entraînement en chiffres ?

Plus de 400 heures de roulage par an, 4 pneus avant et 150 pneus arrière. Pour les plaquettes de frein, je les change tous les 4 mois.

Quelle est la particularité de ton style ?

Au-delà du fait que je roule en slim alors que la tendance était plutôt au baggy, j’ai développé un style agressif mais fluide, qui donne une fausse impression de facilité.

Tes motos sont largement modifiées. Raconte !

J’utilise 2 Kawasaki 636 de 2004, parce que les pièces détachées d’occasion sont moins chères et qu’il n’y a pas encore trop d’électronique. Les suspensions sont modifiées ; les radiateurs (de ZX-6 R de 1997), plus grands ; et j’ai opté pour un cadre tubulaire polonais Szfajcar très solide.

“LA COMPÉTITION EST UN RÉEL DÉFI”

Le réservoir est réduit (8 litres) pour faciliter les tricks, et les commandes de frein sont modifiées. Je dispose d’un frein avant à 2 étriers 4 pistons et 2 disques de 300 mm, à main droite, et, à gauche, d’un levier d’embrayage court jouxtant un levier de frein plus long. Une platine arrière reçoit 2 étriers Nissin à 4 pistons. J’ai le choix d’actionner les 2 étriers ensemble via le levier, ou un seul via la pédale de frein.

Côté fringues, avec quoi aimes-tu stunter ?

J’utilise des baskets montantes et des protections tibias et genoux sous mon jeans. J’enfile un tee-shirt pardessus mon blouson Furygan que je kiffe trop, à la fois pour sa coupe et son style. Pour un feeling au top, j’utilise des gants Furygan en textile mais coqués, qui offrent une grande liberté de mouvement.

Le dri est-il un passage obligé pour un stunter pro ?

Le dri fait partie intégrante du stunt et depuis 1 an, la discipline prend de l’essor, avec l’utilisation de motos spécifiques. Le dri , c’est un truc en plus, qui offre une autre image pour les spectacles.

Quel est ton programme pour 2017 ?

Je fais entre 10 et 15 shows par an, en France et en Europe. Pas plus, car je me réserve du temps pour m’entraîner pour les compétitions. Je serai aussi au départ des 2 manches de la Dri Fighter Cup. La compétition est-elle nécessaire ?

Non, il y a des stunters qui réussissent très bien sans en faire. Mais pour moi, c’est un bon moyen de me

positionner et un challenge personnel, car tu subis une grosse pression. Il faut gérer le stress, enchaîner une cinquantaine de tricks en 3 minutes… C’est un réel défi, qui me permet de progresser sur 6 ou 7 épreuves en Europe avec une finale à Dubaï.

Quelle est ta place dans la hiérarchie mondiale et comment comptes-tu évoluer ?

En 2016, j’ai terminé dans le top 10, mais à 24 ans, je manque encore d’expérience face à des riders d’une trentaine d’années. J’aurais besoin de 3 ou 4 gros tricks en plus, comme le wheeling reverse. En fait, il faudrait que je m’entraîne avec un bon rider pour gagner en motivation et oser, car à un certain moment, il faut y aller, c’est on-off.

Peut-on apprendre en regardant ?

Oui, je m’inspire de tous les pilotes, mais la mise en pratique diffère de l’un à l’autre.

Quelle est la part de la communication dans ce qui est devenu ton métier ?

C’est elle qui fait tout et qui conditionne les partenariats.

Je réalise une dizaine de vidéos par an, totalisant 1 million de vues sur YouTube. Je suis actif sur les réseaux sociaux aussi, où je compte 33 000 fans sur Facebook et 8 000 followers sur Instagram…

Un conseil aux stunters en herbe ?

Mieux vaut débuter en 50 ou en 125, car les grosses cylindrées sont plus difficiles à gérer. Il faut bien s’équiper, avec dorsale, genouillères… et un bon cuir Furygan ! Il faut aussi être persévérant, remonter sur la moto après une grosse chute, et repousser les limites.

‘STUNT COMPETITIONS ARE A REAL CHALLENGE’

Thibaut, how did you get into stunting?

I started out on a scooter and a 50cc manual gearbox.

When I was about 15, I restored a Yamaha 50 TZR to use for stunts, with a rear hand brake. I watched a lot of videos online, and trained in a parking lot. In 2010, I entered the Stunt Bike Show in Bordeaux and won my category. It got me totally stoked to do more stunting, so I bought a Suzuki 600 GSX-R. My mother supported my decision on condition that I didn’t quit school. So I finished high school and got an undergraduate diploma in boat retail. In 2013, I decided to stunt full-time with the hope of making a living out of it.

How do you train?

I do a two-hour workout daily: crunches, cardio training, muscle building and exercises to increase balance and flexibility. And I do two-hour training sessions on my bike five times a week.

You also work with a mental coach. What does he teach you?

He teaches me to channel all of my energy and emotions into my sport, because sometimes I’m my own worst enemy [Laughs].

What if you were to sum up your training in figures?

More than 400 hours of riding per year, with 4 front tyre and 150 rear tyre changes. I change my brake pads every 4 months.

What’s special about your style?

Well, I ride wearing slim-fit jeans, whereas most stunters wear baggy pants. I’ve developed an aggressive but fluid style, which makes my riding look deceptively easy.

Your bikes are highly modified. Tell us more.

I use 2 Kawasaki 636ccs dating to 2004 because second-hand spare parts are cheaper to buy, and back then bikes weren’t stuffed with electronics. The bikes use a modified suspension and a bigger radiator – the one on the 1997 ZX-6 R – and I’ve opted for a very solid Szfajcar cage from Poland. The fuel tank is small (8 litres) to make tricks easier, and the brake controls are modified. I have a front brake with 2 callipers, 4 pistons and 2 disks (300-mm) on the right hand, and a short clutch lever next to a longer brake lever on the left. At the rear, a bracket holds two 4-piston Nissin brake callipers. I can action the 2 callipers simultaneously using the lever, or one of them using the brake pedal.

What do your wear to stunt?

High-top sneakers, and knee/shin pads under my jeans.

I pull on a T-shirt over my beloved Furygan jacket, which has a fantastic cut and style. When I want extra feel on the controls, I use textile Furygan gloves with a shell, which give me a lot of freedom of movement.

Is it vital for a pro stunt biker to learn drifting?

Drifting is an integral part of stunt riding, and it’s become massive over the past year, with the use of specific motorcycles. Drifting adds an extra dimension to a stunt show.

What are your plans for 2017?

I’ll be doing 10 to 15 shows in France and Europe, tops – I’ve set aside time to train for competitions.

Does a stunt rider have to compete?

No. Plenty of successful stunt riders never compete. But for me, it’s a good way to measure myself against the top riders. Competitions put you under huge pressure.

You have to manage your stress when you’re doing 50odd tricks in 3 minutes. It’s a real challenge, and I keep fine-tuning my technique in the course of 6 or 7 competitions, all the way to the finale in Dubai.

What’s your spot in the international rankings, and how to you plan to improve?

In 2016 I made it into the top 10. But I’m only 24, so I’m not as experienced as riders in their early 30s. There are 3 or 4 major tricks I still haven’t mastered, like a reverse wheelie.

I should start training with a good rider to help me take the plunge, because at some point you just have to go for it.

Can you learn by watching?

Yes. I draw inspiration from a lot of other riders. But every rider has a different way of doing their tricks.

How important is publicity?

It’s vital. It’s how you get sponsorships. I make a dozen videos each year, which get around one million views on You Tube. I’m an active social media user. I have 33,000 Facebook fans and 8,000 Instagram followers.

What advice would you give a budding stunter?

It’s best to start out on a 50cc or 125cc bike, because big-engine bikes are hard to control. Get yourself some good gear with a back protector, knee pads and so on – and a set of Furygan leathers! You have to preserve and stick with it. Get back on the bike when you crash. Keep pushing your limits.

LE GOÛT DE L’AVENTURE

A TASTE FOR ADVENTURE Au moment où le 39e Dakar tire sa révérence, flash-back sur les débuts du plus mythique des rallyes, dont la première édition fut remportée en janvier 1979 par Cyril Neveu, qui doublera la mise en 1980. En 1981, c’est Hubert Auriol qui lui succède. Leur point commun ? Ils roulent Furygan, le cuir qui colle à la peau de ces nouveaux aventuriers.

En 1978, la veille de Noël, 165 concurrents, dont 87 motos, forment le parc fermé du premier Paris-Dakar, au pied du Trocadéro, en plein Paris. Objectif ? Gagner Dakar via l’Algérie, le Niger, le Mali, la Haute-Volta (aujourd’hui le Burkina Faso) et le Sénégal. Un défi sportif et mécanique long de 10 000 kilomètres, qui passe par Tamanrasset, Arlit, Agadez… sur des pistes éprouvantes, piégeuses et destructrices, mêlant la tôle ondulée et le fesh-fesh (mais pas encore de grand désert), avant d’aborder l’Afrique Noire. Le 14 janvier 1979, 70 rescapés, éreintés, atteignent la capitale sénégalaise. Les écarts entre les pilotes sont importants, 8 heures séparent le 1er du 10e.

Le vainqueur de cette « transat des sables », selon les propres termes de l’organisateur Thierry Sabine ? Un amateur de 22 ans, Cyril Neveu, au guidon de sa Yamaha 500 XT de 40 chevaux, flirtant avec les 130 km/h grâce à des pneus de trial. Une moto sommairement préparée : fourche de IT 400, réservoir de 30 litres, selle en mouton retournée par Claude, le papa de Cyril, fourreur à Orléans, intégrant 2 chambres à air et une trousse à outils, chaîne de rechange logée dans le bac à batterie, solide porte-bagages avec sacoches emportant des gourdes… Cyril Neveu gagne l’épreuve au scratch, devant Gilles Comte (Yamaha XT 500) et Philippe Vassard (Honda 250 XLS). La première auto n’est que 4e. Vexée, la FFSA exigera ensuite un classement moto et auto distinct… Fait notable : les 3 premiers motards sont habillés Furygan !

With the 39th Dakar now over, we look back at the early days of this legendary rally. The inaugural Dakar Rally was won in January 1979 by Cyril Neveu, who followed up his win with a second victory in 1980. The next year, Hubert Auriol emerged the winner. The two men had one thing in common: they both rode wearing Furygan suits. For these new adventurers, their leathers were like a second skin.

The first Paris-Dakar was flagged off on Boxing Day 1978. In all, 165 vehicles (including 87 motorcycles) set out on the 10,000-km journey from Trocadéro, in the heart of Paris, to the Senegalese capital Dakar. The route traversed Algeria, Niger, Mali, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) and Senegal, with overnight stops in places like Tamanrasset, Arlit and Agadez. The rally was a gruelling physical and mechanical challenge. Competitors rode through punishing, treacherous and damage-inflicting terrain – corrugated dirt tracks and long stretches of the fine desert dust known as ‘fesh fesh’ – on their way to sub-Saharan Africa. On 14 January 1979, 70 exhausted survivors arrived in the Senegalese capital. Significant gaps separated the competitors: the rider in tenth place was eight hours behind the leader. The winner of the first Dakar – which race organizer Thierry Sabine compared to the Transat bakerly sailing race, calling it a ‘desert Transat’ – was Cyril Neveu, a 22-year-old amateur riding a Yamaha 500 XT equipped with trial bike tyres, featuring a 40 bhp motor, a top speed of nearly 130 km/h and some very basic fittings: an IT 400 fork, a 30-litre fuel tank, a sheepskin saddle made by Cyril’s dad Claude (a furrier by trade) with two inner tubes and a toolkit stuffed underneath it, a spare chain in the battery box and a sturdy luggage rack holding panniers with water supplies. Neveu was first past the finish line, ahead of Gilles Comte, also on a Yamaha XT 500, and Philippe Vassard on a Honda 250 XLS. The first car came in a mere fourth, much to the annoyance of the FFSA (the French motor sport federation), which subsequently demanded separate classes for motorcycles and cars. It so happens that the motorcyclists who won the top three spots were all wearing Furygan.

Hubert Auriol y gagne son surnom de « Chevalier blanc » En 1981, 281 concurrents, dont 106 motos, sont au départ du 3e Dakar et de ses 10 600 kilomètres. Le rallye se professionnalise. En témoigne le team Honda, qui, pour contrer les 5 Yamaha Sonauto, engage 5 motos officielles (avec Cyril Neveu comme chef de file), 3 4 x 4 d’assistance rapide, un Pinzgauer 6 x 6 pour transporter les pièces et un avion pour la logistique. Les monocylindres japonais sont malmenés : entre casses mécaniques et problèmes de navigation, ils laissent le champ libre à Hubert Auriol, qui fait parler les 55 chevaux de sa BMW capable d’atteindre les 160 km/h. Le Dakar s’est trouvé un nouveau héros, tout de blanc vêtu ! Hubert Auriol, fin navigateur et parfait stratège, bien servi par une moto fiable et rapide, remporte l’épreuve avec 3 heures d’avance sur Serge Bacou et Michel Mérel, deux pilotes Yamaha. Une fois encore, Furygan réalise le triplé ! « Dès 1980, je roulais Furygan. À cette époque, avant de remporter le Dakar, j’étais un inconnu et j’étais super content d’avoir ce contrat. Il n’était pas question d’argent, mais d’une tenue pour la course et d’une autre de rechange, qui a été faite sur mesure à l’usine de Nîmes. Et je les ai conservées, en parfait état », raconte Hubert, avec son légendaire sourire. Jusqu’au milieu des années 80, les meilleurs pilotes de rallye ont roulé en cuir, très souvent en Furygan, à l’image de Jean-Claude Olivier, Serge Bacou, Jacky Vimond, Michel Mérel, Chuck Stearns, Bernard Rigoni, Fenouil… avant que les tenues en tissu, plus légères et mieux adaptées aux contraintes du désert, ne prennent le dessus. Furygan restera dans l’histoire comme le cuir des pionniers du Dakar.

Cyril Neveu se souvient : « Lors du rallye Abidjan-Nice, en 1977 (NDR : où Cyril termine 6e moto, à 20 ans), j’avais eu très froid en Algérie. Je roulais avec un blouson de ski, pas du tout adapté aux contraintes de la course, tandis que certains, comme Philippe Vassard (sous contrat avec Furygan en vitesse) avaient opté pour un pantalon en cuir. Alors, pour aborder le Dakar dans les meilleures conditions, je me suis acheté un ensemble Furygan 2-pièces en cuir, comme nombre de concurrents avisés. Je l’ai toujours à la maison, c’est une tenue unique car lors de cette première édition, nous étions limités par l’assistance et il n’y avait pas de place pour le superflu. Je partageais la Range Rover pilotée par mon père avec 2 autres motards, Fenouil (BMW) et Hubert Auriol (lui aussi sur une Yamaha XT 500). Il fallait emmener le minimum d’affaires. Un casque, une paire de bottes, une tenue Furygan et 5 tee-shirts pour 10 000 kilomètres. C’était tout, mais cela suffisait pour gagner ! »

Cyril Neveu recalls: ‘During the Abidjan-Nice rally in 1977 [Cyril, then 20, was the 6th motorcyclist past the finish line – Ed.], I was very cold in Algeria. I was riding in a ski jacket, which wasn’t at all suited to the demands of the rally, whereas others, like Philippe Vassard (who was under contract with Furygan for the speed championship) had opted to wear leathers. So I bought myself a set of Furygan two-piece leathers, like riders in the know, to tackle the Dakar in the best possible conditions.

I’ve still got it at home. I had just the one suit, because we had very limited back-up for that first edition of the rally. There was no room for non-essentials. I was sharing the Range Rover my dad was driving with two other motorcyclists – Fenouil, who was riding a BMW, and Hubert Auriol on a Yamaha XT 500. We had to keep our gear to the absolute minimum. All I had for that 10,000-km journey was a helmet, a pair of boots, my Furygan suit and 5 T-shirts. But it was all I needed to win!’

In 1981, at the third Dakar, 281 competitors (including 106 motorcycles) lined up to embark on the 10,600-km journey. By then the rally was turning pro, as the Honda team proved. To compete with the Yamaha Sonauto team’s five bikes, Honda entered five factory bikes (hiring Cyril Neveu as lead rider), with solid back-up: three quick-assistance 4X4s, a Pinzgauer 6x6 to transport spare parts, and a plane to provide logistics support. The Japanese single-cylinders were sorely put to the test.

They suffered mechanical breakdowns and navigational problems, leaving the field wide open for Hubert Auriol, who put his BMW’s 55 horsepower and 160 km/h top speed to good use. The Dakar found itself a new hero. His all-white leathers earned Auriol the nickname Le Chevalier blanc (the white knight). A skilled navigator and fine strategist, Auriol was well served by a fast, reliable bike. He won the race, coming in three hours ahead of Serge Bacou and Michel Mérel, two Yamaha riders.

Once again, all three were wearing Furygan.

‘I started riding in Furygan leathers in 1980,’ says Auriol. ‘Back then, before winning the Dakar, I was an unknown, so I was thrilled to get the contract. It wasn’t about the money. It was about having a suit for the race (and a spare set of leathers), which were made to measure at the Nîmes factory. I’ve kept both suits. They’re in perfect condition.’ Until the mid-80s, all the best rally riders competed wearing leathers, which were often made by Furygan – Jean-Claude Olivier, Serge Bacou, Jacky Vimond, Michel Mérel, Chuck Stearns, Bernard Rigoni and Fenouil. Then textile suits replaced leathers, as they were lighter and better suited to the demands of desert racing. But Furygan will go down in the history books as the maker of the leathers worn by the Dakar pioneers.

MISE EN SEL ÉBLOUISSANTE À Salin-de-Giraud, au sud-est du delta de la Camargue, Furygan joue un peu à domicile, puisque Nîmes n’est qu’à quelques dizaines de kilomètres.

C’est ici qu’est extrait, chaque année, un million de tonnes de chlorure de sodium. Un lieu unique, où l’on ne vient pas par hasard, entre sel et terre ; où la chaleur est écrasante ; et la réverbération, intense, pour des clichés éblouissants. Les falaises blanches du site interdit au public sont l’écrin autour duquel le maestro Dingo compose sa palette monochrome qui met en lumière les cuirs Furygan. La force des images reflète l’intensité des lieux…

THE SHIMMER OF SALT At Salin-de-Giraud in the south-east of the Camargue, we’re pretty much on home territory: Nîmes is only a few dozen kilometres away. One million tons of sodium chloride are extracted here every year. You don’t just stumble across this unique landscape of salt flats and sweltering heat, where the glare of the sun generated these dazzling images. Dingo used the white cliffs of a site that offers no entry for the general public to frame monochrome compositions in which Furygan leathers provide the only touch of colour. The impact of his images conveys the intensity of this location.

A CONCRETE CLIFF

L’autodrome de Sitges-Terramar, à Sant Pere de Ribes, a vu le jour en 1923 et fait faillite 2 ans plus tard, jugé trop dangereux et bâti trop à l’écart du public. De 2 kilomètres de long, ce quasi-centenaire en béton se maintient en forme. Il offre un banking incliné à 60°, peu à peu englouti par la végétation.

C’est un vestige rare, magique, d’une époque révolue, que Furygan a investi le temps de clichés d’exception. Sur cet anneau privé, le staff Furygan, expert en pilotage, et le photographe s’en sont donné à cœur joie sous tous les angles, bercés par la sonorité des Bultaco venues réveiller nos mémoires.

The Autódromo de Sitges-Terramor, in Sant Pere de Ribes, was built in 1923, and went out of use just two years later. Too unprofitable; too dangerous; too far out of town. The near-centenary concrete oval is in pretty good shape, though its edges are being encroached on by the surrounding undergrowth.

The banking is seriously steep: 60 degrees. The Furygan crew used this fabulous vestige of a bygone era as a setting for some striking images. We’re all seasoned riders, so we had the time of our lives racing the (privately-owned) track, the sound of our Bultacos bringing back good memories.

Johann débute bien l’année. Il se hisse régulièrement dans le top 10 (6e au GP d’Allemagne), mais vit une fin de saison plus difficile, marquée par 3 abandons et des performances en deçà de son potentiel. Il termine à la 11e place du championnat. Le service course Furygan lui met à disposition 6 combinaisons surmesure, avec un façonnage particulier au niveau des cuisses, fesses et tour de hanches, car, à force d’entraînement à vélo, Johann a développé une musculature impressionnante. Il utilise des gants de série : les AFS-8, qui lui procurent entière satisfaction, comme c’est le cas pour nos clients.

Johann got off to a good start that year, regularly finishing in the top 10 (he placed 6th in the German GP), but faltered as the season drew to a close, withdrawing thrice and failing to deliver on his potential. L’école ZF Grand Prix profite de l’expérience acquise par le couple Zarco-Fellon pour mettre de jeunes talents sur orbite. Une idée enthousiasmante dont Furygan est partenaire, et l’opportunité pour Johann de transmettre le meilleur.

C’est une école dans laquelle on aurait tous aimé être inscrits ! Démarrer sur un Yamaha 50 PW et, saison après saison, franchir les étapes qui mènent en Grands Prix. « Il y a un examen d’entrée et chaque année doit être validée pour continuer l’aventure. 40 ÉLÈVES PILOTES, DE 6 À 15 ANS L’école ZF Grand Prix, avec Johann Zarco dans le rôle du prof principal assisté par Sébastien Moreno, est ouverte aux jeunes pilotes de 6 à 15 ans, dans la limite d’une quarantaine de places. Dans un premier temps, les kids de 6-9 ans roulent sur leur PW 50. Moyennant 750 €, ils suivent 9 cours le samedi et peuvent tenter de se qualifier pour la course du dimanche. Dans ce cas, les PW sont fournis par Dubois Motos et tirés au sort pour garantir l’équité. L’évolution logique dans l’apprentissage, c’est le passage sur la ZFM 150 à châssis Kayo et moteur Yamaha (5 690 €, équipement inclus) accessible aux 9-15 ans, avec la possibilité de rouler en course (championnat catalan) et l’espoir d’intégrer un jour un team prestigieux du calibre d’Ajo Motorsport. AIMING FOR EXCELLENCE The ZF Grand Prix School draws on the Zarco/Fellon duo’s track-tested experience to give talented young riders a head start. Furygan is backing this exciting new initiative, where Johann Zarco passes on his tricks of the trade.

It’s the school of any young rider’s dreams. Kids start out on a Yamaha 50 PW and then progress, season after season, to each new stage leading to the Grand Prix. ‘There’s an entrance exam, and they have to pass a test each year to continue their journey,’ explains director Laurent Fellon, who’s a stickler for rules. ‘Anybody can join, but students must be able to blend in and prove their determination.’ Laurent’s approach consists of high-intensity training (mostly on a motorcycle), with constant repetition until the kids have got every move down pat. He encourages them to put in consistent effort and develop the will to overcome any challenge. His methods have already borne fruit with two-time world champion Johann Zarco, and he teaches his 12-year-old son Lorenzo – also a Furygan rider, and already following in Johann’s footsteps – exactly the same way.

40 ROOKIES AGED 6 TO 15 The ZF Grand Prix School – where Johann Zarco is the head teacher, with back up from Sébastien Moreno – is open to riders aged 6 to 15, with a maximum of 40 students. 6-9-year olds start out riding their PW 50 bikes. The nine-weekend course costs €750: training sessions on the Saturday, followed by qualifying for a race on the Sunday. Dubois Motos in Nîmes supplies the PWs for the race, with a draw to allocate bikes so every rider starts the race on an equal footing.

The 9-15-year-olds then move on to a ZFM 150 with a Kayo chassis and Yamaha engine (price: €5,690, including equipment), with a chance to enter races like the Catalan Cup and the hope of one day joining a prestigious team like Ajo Motorsport. Like Johann Zarco, ZF Grand Prix School students wear Furygan protective gear and gloves. Dubois Motos has put together a special deal to start them off on the right foot: Yamaha PW 50 + Furygan suit + helmet + boots for €2,890.

urygan et la compétition, c’est une love story qui dure depuis 1969 et à laquelle succomba le Britannique Chas Mortimer dès 1972. « J’avais 23 ans et aujourd’hui, à 68 ans, je suis toujours fidèle à la panthère pour les meetings de motos classiques », confie-t-il. À l’époque, point de contrat écrit, mais une poignée de main pour sceller un accord, à Nîmes, où Chas n’hésite pas à séjourner, entre deux courses, dans la maison familiale de Jacques Segura, le fondateur de la marque. Chas Mortimer, ou plus exactement Charles Summer Mortimer, est né dans des vapeurs d’huile de ricin. Son grand-père maternel, le capitaine John « Mutt » Mortimer, fut l’un des plus brillants pilotes d’essais de l’histoire, pour Vickers-Armstrongs. Il a totalisé – c’est un record – 5 600 heures de vol en essai sur 366 avions différents, dont 54 prototypes. On lui doit, le 5 mars 1936, le premier vol du célèbre Spitfire. Une vraie légende. Le père de Chas possède une école, « Charles Mortimer Race School », à Brands Hatch, et il pilote, lui aussi, des autos et motos sur les circuits de Silverstone et Goodwood.

Une fidélité à Yamaha et Furygan À 16 ans, aux côtés de Paul Smart, Chas est instructeur. Il débute la compétition sur une machine de l’école, une 250 Greeves, avant de passer sur des Yamaha, marque avec laquelle il effectuera toute sa carrière en tant que pilote privé, jusqu’en 1984.

Il sera même le premier à faire gagner Yamaha en GP 500, en 1972. Le palmarès de Mortimer affiche 107 départs en GP, 39 podiums et 7 victoires, avec la particularité d’être le seul à avoir remporté des GP en 125 (2e du championnat du monde derrière Kent Andersson en 1973), 250, 350 et 500 cm3, et même en catégorie 750, à une époque où les pilotes roulaient dans plusieurs cylindrées. urygan’s love affair with racing started in 1969. In 1972, British racer Chas Mortimer fell under the spell of the panther brand. ‘I was 23,’ he recalls. ‘I’m 68 now, but I still wear Furygan gear to classic motorcycle events.’

There was no such thing as a written contract back in the day. A handshake sufficed to seal the deal – in Nîmes, where, between races, Chas was often a guest at the home of Jacques Segura, the founder of the brand.

Chas Mortimer – full name Charles Summer Mortimer –breathed in Castrol fumes from a very young age. His maternal grandfather, Captain John ‘Mutt’ Mortimer, was one of the finest test pilots in history. He clocked up a record 5,600 hours’ worth of flight testing for Vickers-Armstrongs, in 366 different planes, including 54 prototypes. He was at the controls when the famous Spitfire took to the skies on its first-ever test flight on 5 March 1936. The man was a legend. Chas’s father was the proprietor of the Charles Mortimer Race School at Brands Hatch. He also raced cars and motorcycles on the Silverstone and Goodwood circuits.

53 Unflinchingly loyal to Yamaha and Furygan At 16, Chas became one of the school’s instructors, together with Paul Smart. He began racing on a 250 Greeves used by the school. Then he switched to Yamaha motorcycles, and rode as a privateer with the same brand until he ended his racing career in 1984.

In 1972, he was the first rider to net Yamaha a GP 500 win. Chas Mortimer’s career spans 107 GP starts, 39 podium places and 7 wins. He is also the only rider to have won Grand Prix races in several different classes, at a time when riders could enter more than one category: 125cc (he finished second to Kent Andersson in the 1973 world championship), 250cc, 350cc, 500cc and 750cc. He tasted success 8 times at the Tourist Trophy, notably winning both the Production and Junior TTs in 1976. That same year, he also finished third in the GP 250 championship, and became the first European to top the podium at the hellish Macao Grand Prix.
