UNE NOUVELLE SAISON A NEW SEASON

D

epuis 1969, Furygan affronte les saisons. D’un point de vue climatique, bien sûr, c’est le cœur de notre métier, protéger les motards de la pluie, du froid, du vent, de la poussière, de la chaleur, et en premier lieu des chocs. Ceci grâce aux technologies innovantes et ultra-performantes comme le D3O, qui absorbe toujours mieux les impacts.

Chez Furygan, saison rime aussi avec compétition.

En début d’année, dans nos ateliers de Nîmes, nous accueillons nos pilotes pour les derniers essayages, des ajustements au millimètre près, une ultime mise au point aux allures de warm-up. C’est l’effervescence au Racing Service. C’est une pression positive autour d’une relation de confiance qui se noue, saison après saison, entre pilotes, modélistes et couturières, et qui permet d’entretenir une passion synonyme d’engagement total.

En 2018, Furygan fabriquera 160 combinaisons sur mesure pour ses pilotes officiels, nécessitant pour chacune d’entre elles 16 heures d’un travail minutieux afin d'assembler 150 composants. Dans le sillage de Johann Zarco, Michael Dunlop, Lucas Mahias…

Furygan sera aux côtés de dizaines de pilotes, en WGP, WSBK, WEC, CEV, BSB, AMA… Ils ont fait le choix d’un équipement made in France qui conjugue protection, souplesse, confort, look. Nous poursuivrons aussi notre travail de développement sur l’abrasion avec une star de l’Ice Speedway, Daniil Ivanov. Parce que la compétition est un champ d’expérimentation incomparable, inscrit dans l’ADN de Furygan.

Chez Furygan, saison rime aussi avec moisson, de titres et de lauriers. Alors, nous serons tous unis, chaque week-end, aux côtés de Johann, Michael, Lucas, Daniil et tous les autres, dans le sillage du Racing Service Furygan, pour voir la panthère monter sur les podiums.

ere at Furygan, we’ve been in tune with the seasons since 1969. ‘Seasons’ as in weather conditions, obviously, because our core business is protecting motorcyclists from the rain, the cold, the wind, the heat and the dust – and, most importantly, from impact injury, thanks to innovative and high-performance technologies such as D3O, now delivering better shock absorption than ever before.

We’re also involved in the racing season. Early in the year, we have riders come to our Nîmes factory for a final fitting and eleventh-hour alterations – the equivalent of a warm-up session to make last-minute adjustments. Our Racing Service goes into overdrive, but there’s a positive atmosphere despite the pressure. That’s because, with every passing season, our riders place increasing trust in our designers and seamstresses, who are passionate about what they do.

In 2018, Furygan will make 160 custom race suits for the riders we support. Each suit will require 16 hours of painstaking work assembling 150 individual pieces. Alongside Johann Zarco, Michael Dunlop and Lucas Mahias, Furygan will outfit dozens of riders in various championships: WGP, WSBK, WEC, CEV, BSB and AMA. All of them have opted for French-made protective gear combining comfort, suppleness and great design. We’ll also continue our ongoing tests with Ice Speedway star Daniil Ivanov to further improve abrasion resistance. The racetrack is better than any laboratory when it comes to product testing. And racing is in our genes.

Furygan riders reap a rich harvest of titles every season. We’re there in spirit with our Racing Service every weekend, cheering on Johann, Michael, Lucas, Daniil and all the others and rejoicing each time we spot the panther logo on the podium.

L

e titre de Lucas Mahias est un bonheur pour la moto française.

Il est le symbole qu’avec du talent et de la détermination, il est possible d’atteindre un objectif ambitieux. Même en commençant tard. Même sans budget. Il est rafraichissant aussi. Pas langue de bois, un brin tumultueux voire carrément turbulent, le Béarnais est un pilote « à l’ancienne ». Ce qui n’a pas été sans lui jouer des tours. Hyperactif, sanguin, « le cas » Mahias a souvent fait parler de lui. Mais jamais autant par ses frasques que par ses exploits.

Car un guidon à la main, le gars détonne. « Lucas Méléon » comme il aurait pu s’appeler, a montré une réelle capacité à être performant quelles que soient la machine et les conditions. Mais ne vous y trompez pas, cette aptitude est le fruit de l’autre facette de sa personnalité. Travailleur acharné (ascendant stakhanoviste), maniaque reconnu, Lucas Mahias est pointilleux à l’extrême. Tout ce qu’il fait a un but précis, et derrière son apparente décontraction se cache un véritable cérébral, méthodique et attentif à chaque détail. Autant vous dire qu’équiper une pareille personnalité n’est pas de tout repos, mais contribue sans l’ombre d’un doute à tous nous faire prendre de la hauteur. Ensemble. Bravo, et merci Lucas.

ucas Mahias’s world title is great news for young French racers.

It’s proof you can set yourself an ambitious goal and achieve it through sheer talent and determination – even if you’re late to join the fray and only have a small budget. Lucas is a breath of fresh air.

A native of Béarn, in south-west France, he’s a straight talker with a turbulent personality: a rider of the old school variety, though this doesn’t always work in his favor. Hyperactive, hot-blooded Lucas is known to be ‘quite a character’. His antics and exploits have often made him the talk of the paddock. Give him a bike, though, and he’s capable of anything. He has proved time and again that he can deliver the goods, whatever the bike or the riding conditions. His skill in the saddle comes from the flip side of his character. Lucas works extremely hard and sets himself very high standards. He may look laid-back, but he’s a true perfectionist with a keen eye for detail.

Everything has to be just right. Kitting out someone as exacting as Lucas is not exactly a walk in the park. In fact, it’s uphill all the way.

But working with him helps us to reach new heights. So thank you, Lucas. And well done!

Le recordman absolu du tour au Tourist Trophy, à plus de 210 km/h de moyenne, y est décortiqué sous toutes les coutures et livre ses secrets pour rouler vite et bien sur route, comme regarder loin et sur les côtés. Son 4e conseil est de toujours porter le meilleur équipement possible : casque, bottes, combinaison et gants. Cover boy British lab D3O (supplier to Furygan of revolutionary impact protection technology) has chosen to feature Michael Dunlop on the cover of its magazine Impact. The magazine paints a comprehensive portrait of Dunlop, the Tourist Trophy’s all-time lap record holder with an average speed of more than 210 km/h, who gives readers his top tips for better, faster road riding, like looking far into the distance and checking the sides of the road. His fourth tip is to always wear the best gear you can afford: helmet, boots, suit and gloves. Michael Dunlop has chosen to proudly wear Furygan gear since 2013.

Fort de ses 15 années d’expérience en course au plus haut niveau (équipé Furygan depuis 2003 !), épris de technique et attentif aux moindres détails, Adrien a le profil idéal pour gérer la structure performante qui permet aux pilotes d’optimiser leurs équipements. Adrien sera sur tous les fronts avec 25 courses au programme, intervenant directement auprès des pilotes et assurant l’interface avec nos ateliers de Nîmes.

Adrien Chareyre signs on with the Racing Service Four-time Supermoto world champion Adrien Chareyre (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011) has joined Furygan’s Racing Service (liaising with Jean-Marc Autheman, our Racing Manager) for the 2018 season. With 15 years of experience in top-level racing, technically savvy Adrien (a wearer of Furygan gear since 2003) has a sharp eye for the smallest detail, so he’s the perfect choice to head up this high-performance division and help riders optimize their gear. With 25 races lined up this year, Adrien will have a very busy time of it getting feedback from our riders and liaising with our Nîmes factory.

When our leather crafters trace shapes on a hide using tailor’s chalk, they can already visualize the Furygan product it will ultimately become. First they run their hands over the leather, testing the feel of it. Then, with deft movements, they mark the surface with blue, white and yellow lines that will minimize scrap and optimize quality. The pattern they trace ensures the robot arm performs the perfect cut: one that uses every precious inch of this noble material.

Michael Dunlop et Daniil Ivanov feront fondre le bitume et la glace dans leur quête de podiums. Alors que David Muscat (Ducati) roule en championnat de France Superbike, d'autres pilotes iront se bagarrer en Espagne : Jason Uribe (AGR) en CEV Moto2, Matthieu Gregorio (Larresport) et Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport) partiront à l'assaut des catégories Moto3 Junior et 1000 RFME. Obligatoires en France depuis fin 2016 pour circuler à deux-roues motorisés, les gants répondent à des normes bien précises.

Pionnier en la matière, depuis 1969, Furygan propose une gamme de près de 70 modèles, déclinés chacun en plusieurs coloris. Ils subissent une batterie de tests normalisés, 11 précisément, visant à vérifier l’innocuité des produits utilisés, l’inclusion d’éléments durs, les exigences ergonomiques, la taille et la longueur des manchettes, le maintien, la résistance au déchirement, à l’abrasion par impact, à la coupure par tranchage et celle des coutures, la protection contre les chocs des articulations et le contrôle des marquages pour une bonne information. Réussissant toutes ces épreuves haut la main, Furygan vous offre la certitude d’un choix judicieux pour rouler avec confort, en toute sécurité.

Avec une production hebdomadaire pouvant avoisiner les 800 blousons ou pantalons (300 combinaisons), le cuir ne reste pas longtemps sur les étagères de notre usine de Nîmes. Ainsi, en provenance d’Italie et d’Amérique du Sud, ce ne sont pas loin de 100.000m2 de cuir qui sont préparés pour la découpe en France. Après avoir été examinée une à une sur toutes les faces et sous toutes les coutures, puis « tracée » (cf. rubrique Macro), chaque peau est déposée sur un chevalet spécialement fabriqué sur mesure par un artisan menuisier. Cet examen minutieux initie notre procédé de fabrication qui, une fois achevé, conduira ce cuir à incarner votre seconde peau.

As of late 2016, France has made it compulsory to wear gloves that comply with specific safety standards when riding a motorized two-wheeler. Protective gear pioneer Furygan has been making motorcycle gloves since 1969. Our current range has nearly 70 different styles, each available in several colours.

They undergo a whole gamut of tests in real-life riding conditions – 11, to be precise – in order to ensure they are made of safe materials, include hard armour, guarantee ergonomic comfort, have the right cuff cut and length, fit snugly, are tear resistant, abrasion resistant, cut resistant and seam-split resistant, and offer impact protection as well as clear marking and information for users. Since Furygan gloves easily meet all these requirements, they are a wise choice for a safe and comfortable ride.

SAG Racing avec Fury

SAG Racing and Fury

L’équipe espagnole SAG Racing, engagée en GrandS Prix depuis 2005, portera les couleurs Furygan pour la saison 2018. Emmené par Eduardo Perales, impliqué dans la compétition au plus haut niveau depuis 30 ans, le team sera composé du Français Jules Danilo (22 ans) et de l’Espagnol Isaac Vinales (24 ans). Pour Jules Danilo, après 4 années en Moto3, l’intégration au SAG Racing correspond au passage à la catégorie Moto2, avec une moto collant mieux à son gabarit. Isaac Vinales a débuté les GP en 2010, puis aligna 4 saisons en Moto3. En 2016 et 2017, Isaac roulait en Moto2 et possède une expérience de la catégorie qu'il a mise en pratique dès les essais hivernaux (5e à Valence, 10e à Jerez).

Spanish team SAG Racing has competed in Grand Prix racing since 2005. In 2018, SAG riders will be wearing Furygan. Managed by Eduardo Perales, who has been around in top-level racing for the past 30 years, the team comprises Frenchman Jules Danilo, 22, and Spaniard Isaac Vinales, 24. For Jules Danilo, fresh from a 4-year stint in Moto3, the move to SAG Racing also means a move up to Moto2, with a bike better suited to his height. Isaac Vinales made his GP debut in 2010 and then spent 4 seasons in Moto3. In 2016 and 2017, Isaac raced in Moto2. His experience in the category served him in good stead recently during winter tests (he placed 5th in Valencia and 10th in Jerez).

SECOND SKIN We make roughly 800 jackets or pants – i.e.

300 suits – per week, so the leather we use doesn’t stay in storage for long. In all, more than 1,000,000 sq ft of high-quality hides sourced in Italy and South America are prepped for cutting at our Nîmes factory.

Every single hide is examined in minute detail. Then it is ‘traced out’ (see the ‘Macro’ section of this issue) and hung on a sawhorse made especially for this purpose by an artisan carpenter. Our stringent inspection is the first step of a manufacturing process that will turn the leather into a suit that feels like a second skin.

En endurance, ton palmarès est monstrueux : champion du monde 2004, quadruple vainqueur des 24 Heures du Mans, 9 podiums au Bol d’Or dont une victoire, quelle est la recette d’une telle performance ?

La passion et la culture de cette discipline.

En venant de la vitesse, au début, il est difficile de s’adapter à l’endurance, où tu dois tout partager, les temps d’essais, les réglages…

C’est une grosse remise en question. Il y a une forme de frustration. Mais l’orgueil reprend le dessus, tu as envie d’être le plus rapide de l’équipe, tout en te battant pour faire gagner le team. Il faut aller vite dans le trafic en préservant la machine pour tes coéquipiers. J’ai aimé me surpasser pour mon équipe.

You have an amazing track record in endurance racing: you were the 2004 world champion, you’re a four-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours and you won 9 podium spots at the 24-hour Bol d’Or, including a win. What’s your secret?

My passion for endurance, and my in-depth knowledge of the sport. Coming from GP racing, it’s tough in the beginning to adapt to endurance, where you have to share everything – lap times, bike set-up and so on. It’s a major re-assessment of your skills, and you can find yourself getting frustrated. But then your pride resurfaces. You want to be the fastest rider in the line-up and do your utmost to ensure your team wins. You have to ride fast through the traffic while going easy on the bike for your teammates’ sake. I like to surpass myself to give my team an edge.

Qu’est-ce qui fait la force de l'école BMC ?

Permettre aux stagiaires (1 500 par an depuis 1998 et 4000 en 2017) de se faire plaisir en toute sécurité. On essaye de se mettre à leur place, de comprendre leurs problématiques et on développe des exercices, des solutions, pour qu’ils progressent vite en augmentant leurs marges de sécurité.

What is the BMC school’s forte?

Our skill at enabling our students (1,500 per year since 1998; 4,000 in 2017) to have a blast while staying totally safe. We try to put ourselves in their shoes and understand their problems. Then we come up with riding exercises and solutions to help them progress quickly while riding more safely.

Quelle est l’actualité de BMC en 2018 ?

En dehors de nos journées de roulage et stages, nous développons une activité réservée aux professionnels (coursiers, taxis, mais aussi les employés motards des entreprises…), sous la forme de 40 journées de roulage pour des groupes de 16 stagiaires encadrées par 4 personnes de l’école dont 2 instructeurs issus du sport de haut niveau.

Ceci en partenariat avec la Conduite Préventive. L’idée est d’apprendre à faire de la moto, ce qui est différent du fait d’avoir son permis.

Sous forme d’exercices ludiques, les stagiaires découvrent le transfert de masse, l’évitement, la maniabilité… Notre structure itinérante, qui opère en dehors des circuits, fournit les machines, des Suzuki – du scooter 125 ou 400 à la 650 ou 750 – et les équipements Furygan.

Le potentiel de cette activité est important car il appartient aux entreprises de veiller à la sécurité de leurs employés.

What are BMC’s plans for 2018?

Besides our regular track days and workshops, we’re developing a programme for people whose jobs involve motorbikes: couriers; motorcycle chauffeurs; company employees. It consists of 40 days of riding for groups of 16 trainees supervised by 4 of the school’s staff, including 2 instructors with past experience in high-level racing. The idea is to teach people to really ride a motorcycle, which is not the same thing as merely having a motorcycle license.

Through a series of fun exercises, they’ll learn how to master things like push steering, avoiding obstacles and manoeuvrability. We have a travelling set-up, so we’re not restricted to training on race tracks. We supply the (Suzuki) machines, from 125cc or 400 cc scooters to 650 or 750cc motorbikes, and (Furygan) protective gear. There’s a lot of growth potential for this business, because companies are responsible for employee road safety.

Not many people know that the wide range of protective gear made by Furygan includes skydiving helmets. We’ve been designing and making these helmets (an orange training helmet and a green combat helmet) for the past 15 years for elite French Army troops, including skydiving commandos.

The leather helmet has foam padding inserts and is made to very precise specs. Like all Furygan products, it goes through extensive testing in our Nîmes laboratory.

80 Essence Motocycles est une entreprise française qui développe, depuis 2015, une moto innovante à propulsion électrique : E-Raw. Le design interpelle, avec une superbe pièce de bois faisant office de selle tout en soulignant l’absence de réservoir. La conception est de qualité : cadre treillis, superbe bras oscillant en aluminium, composants de qualité, tels les suspensions Öhlins, le freinage Beringer, les jantes Excel… Côté motorisation, le bloc développe entre 12 et 15 kWh, permettant une puissance de crête de 80 kW (109 ch), une vitesse maxi de 200 km/h, une accélération de 0 à 100 km/h en 3,4 secondes.

Et il ne faut que 30 minutes pour recharger les batteries Lithium-ion. E-Raw associe le travail des designers, ingénieurs, artisans épris de belle technologie, tout en conservant les fondamentaux : matériaux bruts et travail manuel.

Une vision partagée avec Furygan, qui encourage cette démarche, et qui donnera naissance très prochainement à une collaboration inédite entre nos deux marques.

French company Essence Motocycles has been hard at work since 2015 developing an innovative electric motorcycle called the E-Raw. It is strikingly designed, with a superb wooden seat replacing the usual saddle to emphasize the lack of a fuel tank. The build is high quality, with a trellis frame, a magnificent aluminium swingarm and top-quality components like Öhlins suspensions, Beringer brakes and Excel rims.

The engine develops from 12 to 15 kWh to produce 80 kW (109 bhp) of peak power, a top speed of 200 km/h, and acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

It takes only 30 minutes to recharge the Lithium-ion bateries. E-Raw is working with designers, engineers and artisans who combine a love of fine technology with a commitment to excellent materials and painstaking craftsmanship – an approach that Furygan strongly supports, as it echoes our own vision.

Indeed, A tie-up between our two brands is in the offing.

Depuis plus de 20 ans, le photographe Dingo met en lumière, avec créativité, les qualités des équipements Furygan. JÉRÉMY MOREL La course, c’est à pied qu’il l’envisage. Deux roues ? Celles de son vélo. Quant à la glisse, c’est dans l’eau qu’il la pratique. La vie d’un triathlète professionnel est dure, faite de sacrifices, d’efforts et de douleurs. Avoir une soupape est indispensable. Jérémy, lui, en a seize. Celles de sa Yamaha R6. Rencontre avec un homme de fer, au mental d’acier.

He does his racing on foot. His racing wheels are attached to a bicycle. And his only slides are into a pool. It’s tough being a professional triathlete. Life is made up of sacrifices, hard slog, pains and strains. You have to have a (safety) valve. Jeremy has sixteen of them: the ones on his Yamaha R6. Interview with an Ironman known for his steely resolve.

Comment on tombe dans le triathlon ? À la base, je suis cycliste. En 2012, après la catégorie Junior, j’avais un projet avec une structure pour rouler en DN2 (NDLR : deuxième division nationale), mais cela n’a pas abouti. Du coup, j’ai arrêté le vélo et fait la fête tout l’été. J'ai raté mon concours d’entrée en licence… et pris un billet pour l’Australie. Au bout de six mois là-bas, j’avais pris 15 kg. Alors j’ai appellé un copain, Olivier Marceau (NDLR : champion du monde de triathlon en 2000), et je lui ai demandé comment faire pour maigrir. Et là, il m'a répondu : « Bouffe des courgettes et va courir ! Commence par 10 bornes en 50 minutes. » Ça marchait bien, j’étais content. Olivier m'a dit : « Ben, va faire un semi », 20 bornes, OK. Puis : « Tu veux faire le malin ? Va faire un marathon ! » Alors j’ai pris mon van, fait 21 kilomètres tout droit, j’ai posé un caillou et je suis revenu me garer d’où j’étais venu pour partir courir. 4 h 50 plus tard, j’étais de retour, au bout de ma vie. Je suis rentré en France et Olivier, que tout ça amusait, m'a lancé : « Je parie que tu n’es pas capable de faire l’Iron Man d’Embrun dans six mois ! » (NDLR : 3,8 km de natation, 188 kilomètres de vélo, 42 km de course à pied…) J’avais jamais vraiment nagé de ma vie, je courais comme un peintre, qu’est-ce que tu voulais que je fasse ? ! Et puis Olivier m’a lâché : « 500 balles que tu finis pas ! » Du coup, je me suis entraîné… J’ai l’esprit de compétition, je l’ai toujours eu. Je fais des courses depuis que je suis minime, et finir pour finir, je n’y arrive pas. Si j’ai un dossard, c’est pour me mettre un carton. J'ai terminé 30e sur 1020, et depuis, je ne me suis jamais arrêté.

How did you get into triathlon?

I started out as a cyclist. In 2012, after competing in the junior category, I had plans to ride with a team in DN2 [Ed: France’s second division], but it didn’t work out. I stopped cycling, partied all summer, failed my university entrance exam ... and bought a ticket to Australia. After six months Down Under, I’d put on 15 kg. So I rang up a friend of mine, Olivier Marceau [Ed: the 2000 triathlon world champion] and asked him for some weight loss tips. ‘Eat courgettes and go running !’ he told me. ‘Start off doing 10K in 50 minutes.’ I gave it a try and it worked, so I was happy. Then he said: ‘Now do a semi-marathon.’ I thought: 20K, fine, I can do that. Then he says: ‘Really want to show ’em what you’re made of? Go run a marathon !’ So I got in my van, drove for 21km along a straight road and marked the halfway point with a stone. Then I drove back to where I’d come from, parked the van and started running. I got back to the van four hours and fifty minutes later, on the verge of collapse. When I returned to France, Olivier, who was finding all of this hugely amusing, threw down a challenge: ‘I bet you can’t do the Embrun Ironman in six months’ time !’ [Ed: a 3.8km swim, a 188km cycle and a 42km run]. I’d never been much of a swimmer, and I was no great shakes as a runner – I mean, seriously, what did he expect?

And then he says: ‘Bet you 500 francs you won’t finish !’ So of course I started training. I’ve got a competitive streak; always have had. I’ve been racing since I was a kid, and it’s not my style to just try and finish. If I’m wearing a race number you can bet I’m going to give it my best shot. I finished 30th out of 1,020 that first time, and I’ve never looked back.

Et la moto dans tout ça ?

Mon père est motard, son cousin et mon oncle aussi. Le cousin de mon père passait toujours par la maison quand il faisait des courses dans le coin. Je me souviens de son camion, avec la moto de piste derrière. Génial ! Et puis, mon pote Franky, avec lequel je m’entraînais quand je me suis mis au triathlon, est motard. Il m’a mis l’idée en tête de passer mon permis.

Tu bosses, et tu t’entraînes 25 à 35 heures par semaine. Tu trouves le temps de rouler ?

C’est assez complexe, mais je le trouve. J’utilise ma moto pour aller bosser (NDLR : Jérémy est responsable marketing/communication dans une start-Up qui a développé une application baptisée "Gutaï", dédiée à l’amélioration de l’entraînement des sportifs d’endurance). Le samedi, je cours, et après, je vais faire de la moto. Le dimanche, quand le temps le permet, je roule aussi.

C’est une soupape de décompression. La moto, c’est bon pour mon équilibre. On dit souvent que le sport permet de s’évader, quand tu en fais à haut niveau, tu ne t’évades pas tant que ça.

Parfois, tu n’as pas envie, mais tu vas quand même au charbon.

Ta première machine ?

Une Derbi Senda 50 cm3 de kéké (rires) ! Puis une ER-6 qui a fini en cube, une KTM 450 EXC montée Supermotard, une MT-07, et la petite dernière, une R6 de 2007.

Tu parles d’un cube, tu as déjà chuté ?

Dans cette vie où je dois tout cumuler, j’étais un peu à la bourre. J’avais couru tôt le matin, de 6 h à 7 h 30, et j’étais en retard pour le boulot. C’était une route assez sympathique, au mois de février 2016, je suis rentré un peu fort dans une courbe, et à la sortie, une voiture était arrêtée pour tourner à gauche. J’ai fait un highside en rétrogradant trop vite. J’ai volé sur 18 mètres de long. Je n’ai pas touché la voiture, mais je me suis bien blessé : 3 fractures au pied, 22 œdèmes osseux, 5 tendons fissurés (2 au genou, 3 au pied) et la rotule n’a pas explosé, mais là, tu vois, j’ai encore mal. Deux mois en centre de rééducation, pour réapprendre à marcher puis à courir.

En octobre, j'ai fini trois en Turquie. Ça aurait pu être pire !

Tu étais équipé ?

Heureusement ! Bottes, gants, mais jean de « ville ». Je n’ai rien eu en haut du corps, c’est mon blouson qui m’a sauvé. Un Furygan Titan, il était trop beau, il n’avait presque rien, mais les pompiers l’ont découpé… Je l’ai toujours, je te le montrerai ! C’est comme ça qu’a commencé mon histoire avec la marque, direct dans le vif du sujet. Maintenant, j’ai aussi un Furygan pour le bas !

Qu’est-ce qui t’a poussé à reprendre le guidon ?

J’aime cette sensation de liberté. Tu l’as un peu à vélo, parfois en course à pied. Mais à moto, tu l’as sans le mal physique. OK, je n’ai pas eu de chance ce matin-là, mais je relativise. J’adore ce que m’apporte la moto. Et puis, ça m’aide pour le vélo. Quand il faut rouler à 90 km/h dans les descentes je suis plus à l’aise, je connais cette sensation de vitesse !

Where does the motorcycling fit in?

My father’s a motorcyclist, and so is his cousin – my uncle. He would always stop off at our house when he had errands to run in the area. I remember his truck with a race bike in the back.

Very cool. My pal Franky, who I used to train with when I got into triathlon, was a biker too. He convinced me to get my licence.

You have a full-time job and you spend 25 to 35 hours a week training. Where do you find the time to ride?

It’s not easy, but I manage. I ride my motorbike to work [Ed: Jérémy is head of marketing and communications for a start-up called Gutaï, which has built an app to help endurance athletes enhance their performance]. On Saturdays, I go for a ride after my run. I ride on Sunday too if I have the time. Riding is a way for me to blow off steam. It keeps me grounded. Playing sport is supposed to be a great way to get away from it all, but when you’re a high-level athlete it’s not really an escape. Sometimes you don’t feel like training, but you get stuck in anyway.

What was your first bike?

A Derbi Senda 50cc to show off with [Laughs]. Then an ER-6 that I managed to smash up; a KTM 450 EXC Supermoto, an MT-07 and now my latest, a 2007 R6.

How did you crash the ER-6?

My life is a constant juggling act, and on that particular February 2016 morning I’d fallen behind schedule. I’d gone out for a run bright and early, from 6 to 7.30am, and I was late for work. It’s a nice route, and I was going at a good clip. I took a corner at high speed and when I exited, there was a car stopped in front of me, waiting to turn left. I downshifted too fast and high-sided.

I was flung a distance of 18 metres. I didn’t hit the car, but I was quite seriously injured: 3 foot fractures, 22 broken bones and 5 damaged tendons (2 in my knee, 3 in my feet). My kneecap wasn’t smashed, but as you can see, it’s still painful. I spent two months having physio to learn how to walk – and run – all over again. That same October, I placed third at an event in Turkey.

It could have been worse !

Were you wearing protective gear?

Yes, luckily ! I had on my boots and gloves. But I was wearing a regular pair of jeans. Not a single bruise on my upper body: my jacket saved me. A superb Furygan Titan. It was barely damaged, but the firefighters cut it off me. I still have it – I’ll show you. That’s how I started out with the brand: straight in at the deep end ! These days I also wear Furygan riding pants.

What made you get back on after the crash?

I like the feeling of freedom. Cycling gives you that same feeling, to some extent; running too, sometimes. But a motorcycle lets you feel free with hardly any physical effort. OK, so I was unlucky that particular morning. No big deal. I love what I get out of riding a motorcycle. And it helps with my cycling. I’m more relaxed nowadays when I’m riding downhill at 90kph, because I’m familiar with that feeling of speed!

Claude Michy et ses enfants, Philibert et Victoria, sont aux commandes du Grand Prix de France. A chacun son rôle : Claude, fort de ses 25 années d’expérience dans l’organisation du GP de France assure le contact privilégié avec la Dorna, la FFM, la FIM tout en étant connecté en permanence avec les équipes PHA en action sur le circuit et celles de l’ACO (techniques, contrôleurs, commissaires) en relation avec Pierre Fillon. Il intervient également au niveau relationnel avec les partenaires principaux et valide au final toutes les opérations : communication, billeterie, offres commerciales, animations. Il a un œil sur tout et rien ne se passe sans qu’il ne le sache. Philibert assure le suivi des activités commerciales, la gestion financière tout en étant impliqué lors de la conception du système billetterie et des contrôles d’accès. Homme de terrain, sa polyvalence lui permet d’intervenir sur toute la partie opérationnelle. Victoria a l’entière gestion des 2000 VIP, des commandes à la facturation en passant par l’accueil, le placement, la visite du paddock, tout en portant la responsabilité du plan global de promotion du Grand Prix, des parutions presse à l’affichage. Victoria veille également à une gestion pertinente des réseaux sociaux dont l’impact est grandissant.

Claude Michy and his son and daughter, Philibert and Victoria, hold the reins at the French Grand Prix. Each of them plays a specific role. With 25 years of experience organizing the French GP, Claude liaises with Dorna, the French Motorcycling Federation and the International Motorcycling Federation. He also keeps in constant touch with the on-site PHA teams and race organizer Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) officials – tech inspectors, scrutineers and track marshals – reporting to ACO President Pierre Fillon. Claude manages tie-ups with the French GP’s main partners and signs off on all operations, from communications and ticketing to business solutions and special events. No detail escapes his notice, and nothing happens without him knowing about it. Philibert, who looks after the marketing and finance side of things, also helps to set up the ticketing system and the checks at entrance points. He is a versatile and hands-on person, capable of stepping in quickly and efficiently at any stage of the organization. Victoria runs the show when it comes to the 2,000 privileged guests who enjoy premium race viewing facilities, handling everything from orders to invoicing, seating in the VIP lounge and paddock tours. She is also in charge of corporate publicity for the French Grand Prix, including press coverage and posters, and ensures the race is being effectively promoted on social media: an increasingly important event tool.

laude Michy est un entrepreneur né, doublé d’un vrai passionné de sports mécaniques. Doté d’un joli coup de volant qui lui aurait permis de faire carrière après une 4e place en Formule Renault en 1976 (remportée par Alain Prost), c’est dans l’organisation qu’il s’accomplit, avec succès. Depuis 1994, date à laquelle il devient le promoteur du Grand Prix de France, il a multiplié par dix sa fréquentation. 2017 marque un nouveau record, avec plus de 105 000 spectateurs qui ont assisté, pour sa 5e course seulement, au premier podium de Johann Zarco en MotoGP ! De quoi émouvoir toute l’équipe Furygan venue soutenir son champion.

La recette du succès de Claude Michy, c’est un engagement très fort dans l’évènement, mais aussi sa capacité à innover, en proposant, par exemple, depuis 6 ans, la Fan Zone, qui permet aux passionnés de communier avec les pilotes ou encore, en 2017, pour un public de connaisseurs, une course réservée aux pilotes handicapés, International Bridgestone Handy Race, réunissant une trentaine de concurrents sur le mythique circuit Bugatti. Furygan partage cet enthousiasme pour la course, ce goût d’entreprendre, et se félicite du partenariat avec Claude Michy. Much of the credit for the popularity of the French Grand Prix at Le Mans goes to race promoter Claude Michy’s organization PHA, which has Furygan as a technical partner. A look at the people behind this successful event.

laude Michy is a born businessman with a genuine passion for motorsport.

Being a dab hand behind the wheel, he made quite a racing career for himself following a 4th-place finish in the Formula Renault championship in 1976 (Alain Prost won the title that year) before making a switch to the organizational side of things – with great success. Since he took over as promoter of the French Grand Prix in 1994, attendance figures have increased ten-fold. 2017 marked a new record, with more than 105,000 spectators turning up to watch as Johann Zarco took his first podium – after only five MotoGP races! It was an emotional moment for all the members of the Furygan team who’d come to cheer on their champion. Claude Michy is totally invested in the event, but that’s not the only secret of his success. He also has an extraordinary ability to innovate. One example is the fan zone he set up six years ago, where fans can have a chat with riders.

Then there’s the International Bridgestone Handy Race, an event he created in 2017 for disabled riders, with 30-odd racers competing on the legendary Bugatti circuit in the inaugural year. Furygan shares Claude Michy’s passion for racing and his entrepreneurial spirit, so we are thrilled to be PHA’s apparel partner and outfit the entire team. The range includes T-shirts, polo shirts, shirts, jackets, shoes and bags. We supply vented, warm or waterproof clothing to ensure the people at PHA are always prepared, whatever the weather conditions at Le Mans.

De l’élaboration de la stratégie marketing et commerciale à celle de la ligne merchandising en passant par la gestion des partenaires du Grand Prix, les opérations de communication et de relations publiques, la réservation des loges, salons, club VIP… Jocelyn, hommeorchestre, est sur tous les fronts, à 100 %, s’attachant à tout vérifier jusqu’à la couleur des serviettes des menus servis aux invités. Comme en course, Jocelyn le sait, chaque détail compte.

Entre leurs mains, le sésame pour accéder au Grand Prix : les fameux pass dont la couleur (il y en a 3) détermine le rayon d’action. Rouge pour aller partout, bleu donnant accès à la piste et vert pour le paddock. L’attribution rigoureuse des pass de la Dorna se fait en collaboration avec Claude Michy. Lorraine et Samira ont également en charge la distribution des chasubles portées par le personnel intervenant sur le circuit. Sécurité oblige, en matière de pass, il n’y a pas de place pour les passe-droits.

Jocelyn is a real multitasker. He draws up the sales and marketing strategy and handles merchandising, liaison with race partners, communications and PR, as well as bookings for the VIP booths, lounges and club. He is everywhere at once, at 100%, checking that every detail is perfect, down to the colour of the napkins at the gourmet lunch served to VIP guests.

Lorraine and Samira hand out the three kinds of passes allowing visitors entry to the Grand Prix: a red all-access pass, a blue track pass and a green paddock pass. Charge à elle de veiller à leur bonne installation, prenant en compte les plans, les marquages, les parkings… La gestion des stands implique les points de restauration, snacks, sandwicheries, restaurants répartis dans toute l’enceinte du circuit… Autant d’interlocuteurs pour lesquels Alexandra se doit d’être à l’écoute en permanence. Leur fidélité est le signe d’une relation de qualité. Au programme d’Alexandra aussi, l’organisation des interventions et animations de la Fan Zone.

Natif de la Sarthe, Bruno Vandestick, disponible et souriant, intégré au service communication de l’ACO depuis 1991 est LA voix du circuit Bugatti. Speaker et journaliste de référence, sans jamais hausser le ton, Bruno prend le public en main pour aider les spectateurs à s’approprier la course et la vivre avec intensité. Au GP de France, Bruno partage le micro avec Jean-Claude Bruneau. Les speakers, fins connaisseurs de la compétition, se doivent de diffuser la bonne info, précise et vérifiée, les clefs de la compréhension du spectacle, tout en accompagnant avec enthousiasme les batailles pour le podium.

The French Grand Prix Village comprises 60 exhibitors, for whom Alexandra takes care of logistics. She studies the floor plan, using floor markings, parking areas and other criteria to work out the best location for each booth.

The booth manager is also responsible for ensuring there are food stalls and restaurants dotted all over the circuit.

Alexandra liaises with all the concessions, listening attentively to their needs and fostering a community of satisfied vendors who return year after year. Alexandra also organizes all the talks and activities in the Fan Zone.

Le Mans native Bruno Vandestick has a ready smile and an attentive ear. A member of ACO’s communications team, he is the voice of the Bugatti circuit since 1991.

A well-known journalist and commentator, Bruno provides coverage that is inclusive and enjoyable but never strident, getting spectators caught up in the thrill of the race. Bruno pairs with Jean-Claude Bruneau to commentate on the French Grand Prix. They are both knowledgeable speakers who provide accurate, relevant information to help everyone understand what is going on, and their enthusiasm does justice to exciting podium battles.

Durant tout le week-end, avec le sourire, Florence et David sont en première ligne pour accueillir le public et trouver les réponses à toutes les questions. Pas moins de 3 000 personnes passent ainsi par ce point d'accueil central, pour obtenir des informations, optimiser leurs déplacements, mais également pour retirer des titres d’accès au Grand Prix.

Il existe une grande variété de billets sur le Grand Prix (2 pour l’enceinte générale et 14 pour les tribunes), et c’est à Sophie que revient leur conception ainsi que la gestion des commandes et les expéditions pour parfaitement répondre aux attentes de chaque spectateur. Un mécanisme bien huilé et qui fonctionne à plein régime puisque plus de 50 000 billets sont distribués par PHA, en plus des ventes dans les réseaux de distribution et sur le circuit. Au GP de France, tous les billets sont gagnants.

Le Grand Prix de France est la seule épreuve du championnat du monde à accueillir une Fan Zone et 10 000 spectateurs s’y pressent dès le vendredi, autant le samedi. Pierre Gauthier et son complice, Bruno Vandestick, y reçoivent, lors de talkshows de grande qualité, en live, des invités prestigieux, team-managers, pilotes, journalistes, pour des rencontres riches en émotions et un plaisir partagé avec les aficionados.

Sophie Jouan Ticketing There are several different ticket categories at the French Grand Prix: 2 general admission and 14 grandstand. Sophie is responsible for designing the tickets, processing orders and mailing tickets to each purchaser. It’s a smooth, fast process, and it keeps Sophie busy, as PHA sells more than 50,000 tickets per year, not counting sales through other channels and ticket purchases at the circuit throughout the race weekend.

Pierre Gauthier Fan zone commentator The French Grand Prix is the only race in the motorcycling championship to boast a fan zone. Some 10,000 spectators flock into the space on the Friday and the Saturday. Pierre Gauthier and his co-commentator Bruno Vandestick host talk shows featuring fascinating live interviews with guest stars, team managers, riders and journalists. These lively discussions provide listeners with incisive analysis. There are also plenty of activities to keep the fans entertained, plus the chance to bet on a lottery and win great prizes.

Aux premières loges de toute la partie logistique, Thomas assiste Pierre Vauché et son équipe de 15 personnes, pour valider l’efficience des opérations. Il lui revient de coordonner les prestataires et de les accueillir. Son cahier des charges inclut la programmation des concerts de la Fan Zone, la sélection des animations du Show Mécanique, tout en veillant à une mise en œuvre réussie grâce à une coordination sans faille. Thomas conçoit, commande, gère certains visuels signalétiques, réceptionne les livraisons et les matériels tout en vérifiant leur dispatching.

Pour que l’information circule vite et bien, PHA confie à Lucas le rôle de runner media. C’est à lui qu’incombe de porter aux teams, officiels et autres acteurs du Grand Prix de France, les documents des différentes séances d’essais et courses. Pour Lucas, c’est un peu la course dans la course, au guidon de son scooter Kymco, car avec 3 000 documents à diffuser dès le jeudi 9 heures, il ne faut pas mollir sur la poignée, mais en s’assurant d’une grande marge de sécurité. À l’issue d’un week-end mené tambour battant, Lucas aura parcouru 80 kilomètres, sans même sortir de l’enceinte du circuit.

Pour permettre aux photographes de travailler dans les meilleures conditions, PHA met à leur disposition un service de navettes, opérationnelles lors de chaque séance d’essais et course. Au nombre de 12, effectuant chacune 16 rotations, dans un rituel bien rôdé, elles permettent aux photographes, dont le sac pèse 15 bons kilos, un gain de temps et l'économie d'une fatigue inutile, tout en les aidant à changer facilement de point de vue. Et s’il pleut, les navettes, dont celle de Christelle, offrent quelques minutes de répit bien appréciables pour les photographes, dont les journées sont souvent harassantes.

Thomas is a lynchpin of the logistics behind the race. He helps Pierre Vauché and his 15-strong staff group to optimize operational efficiency. He liaises with and receives suppliers. His job includes programming the concerts in the fan zone and choosing live action for the mechanics show, coordinating with flair to ensure all goes smoothly. Thomas designs, orders and installs some of the information signs.

He also receives goods from suppliers and handles dispatches from the warehouse.

Lucas the runner gets information around the track in a trice. His job is to deliver test session and race documents to teams, race officials and other people involved in the French Grand Prix. For Lucas, it’s a bit of a race within the race as he zips around on his Kymco scooter. With 3,000 documents to distribute starting from 9am on the Thursday, he has to ride fast but safely. By the end of a race weekend, Lucas will have done an 80-km ride without ever leaving the circuit.

PHA provides a courtesy shuttle service for photographers to give them quick access to the action during test sessions and the race. There are 12 shuttles, each doing 16 rounds, so a bus is always available. This saves a lot of time and hassle for photographers lugging 15 kg of equipment on their backs, and lets them easily position themselves at different corners. And, of course, when it’s raining, the buses – including the one Christelle drives – offer photographers some much-needed respite in the course of an exhausting day.

The official ACO photographer since 2010, Jean-René works for PHA during the French Grand Prix. His all-seeing eye captures every scrap of the action at France’s most iconic motorcycling race. He shoots all the marketing photos, and also snaps the dressing rooms, activities, exhibitors and partners. He covers the highlights of the race weekend, from the riders’ press conference on the Thursday to the MotoGP podium on the Sunday: in all, 4,000 photographs to winnow down, classify and send off.

OF THE STORM Two-time Moto2 champion Johann Zarco has been the cynosure of all eyes since he moved up to MotoGP. The Furygan rider owes a great deal of his success to his mentor Laurent Fellon, with whom he set up the Z&F Grand Prix School. The two men are perfectly attuned to each other, and they have a shared motto: More haste, less speed.

Quel regard portez-vous sur le parcours de Johann depuis le pocket bike. Des regrets ?

Johann : Aucun regret. J’ai atteint l’objectif d’être 2 fois champion du monde et je performe au plus haut niveau en MotoGP, c’est signe que le cheminement était le bon.

Laurent : Même constat. Johann débutait en pocket. Il a eu l’intelligence de m’écouter et on a commencé à travailler. En 2008, ça a été un virage assez important lorsqu’il a posé ses valises chez moi. Toutes les décisions que j’ai prises ont été mûrement réfléchies. Je ne prends jamais de décisions à moitié. J’y vais, en respectant les personnes.

Vous êtes-vous choisis au premier coup d’œil ? Comment s’est faite votre rencontre ?

Johann : J’avais 12 ans et pas la conscience d’analyser si quelqu’un me plaisait ou pas. Laurent a surtout plu à mon père. On ne connaissait rien à la moto. Sans expérience, au départ, on perd de l’argent, car on tombe sur des escrocs. En 2003, on rencontre Laurent, compétent et honnête dans ce qu’il peut dire et proposer. Et ça a marché entre nous. Mon père lui a fait confiance. Il a senti une bonne personne. De 12 à 17 ans, c’est lui qui parlait beaucoup à Laurent. Moi, je ne faisais qu’appliquer. Ensuite, j’ai établi une relation directe avec Laurent, sans l’intermédiaire de mon père.

Laurent : Ce qui était bien avec Johann, c’est que je disais quelque chose, il appliquait et il grandissait. Sa force, c’est que d’entrée, il avait beaucoup de vitesse de passage et une écoute. Il y avait un respect mutuel entre nous.

C’est important, le respect, et il faut pouvoir se dire les choses, en étant direct.

Est-ce que vous pouvez tout vous dire ou avez-vous une certaine réserve, comme pourraient l’avoir un père et son fils ?

Johann : La relation a grandi. Quand, à 18-19 ans, je vivais avec Laurent 24 heures sur 24, il y avait parfois des tensions car il a une vision et ne cherche pas à en changer. À 24 ans, j’ai pris mon autonomie. Laurent a eu peur que je déraille, mais il a vu, grâce à mes résultats, que je savais me gérer, en ayant une relation moins paternelle. On est ensemble, on a chacun nos champs de compétences, et notre binôme fonctionne et fonctionnera encore longtemps – jusqu'à aller chercher un titre MotoGP, j’espère.

Laurent : Quand j’ai quelque chose à dire, je suis obligé de le dire. Je ne peux pas être un simple spectateur. Tu fais de la politique ou de la course moto, mais tu ne peux pas faire de politique dans la course moto. Tu dois apporter des choses, avec l’expérience, et rendre service au pilote. Il y a un moment où il faut parler. Je parle, même si je suis dans un team, je suis là pour ça, je suis là pour Johann, et je ferai toujours ça !

Qu’apporte la vision de Laurent du bord de piste ?

Johann : Ça a évolué. Lorsqu’il fallait que je m’imprègne de la moto pour être de plus en plus rapide, quand je devais gérer les contacts avec le team, parfois c’était compliqué. Là, il pouvait m’aider, il me disait de faire comme ci ou comme ça, de ne pas toucher à la moto, de foncer… Maintenant, j’arrive plus à analyser si je suis ou non en phase avec la moto. Laurent, du bord de piste, peut quand même voir si je suis en forme, si je roule bien, il me dit où je dois moins forcer, faire progresser la machine. C’est surtout à l’entraînement maintenant qu’on peut voir si je suis en forme et quand je pars sur une course, je suis programmé, je suis prêt !

Laurent : sur chaque circuit, il y a toujours 2 points de référence où tu vois si la moto est bien ou pas. J’observe, j’en parle avec Johann, et ça suffit.

Avez-vous un rituel, un débriefing après course, où vous analysez les choses ?

Johann : Non, pas de rituel, ça se fait au feeling. On discute, s’il y a des choses à en tirer, on le fait.

Johann, you’ve come a long way since you started out on pocket bikes. Are you satisfied with your progress? Any regrets? How about you, Laurent?

Johann: No regrets at all. I’ve achieved my goal – becoming world champion – twice, and I’m turning in my best performance yet in MotoGP, which proves I’m following the correct progression.

Laurent: Same here. Johann was just getting to grips with pocket bikes when we met. He was smart enough to take my advice on board, and we began working together. 2008 marked a real turning point. That was when he came to stay with my family. Every decision I’ve taken has been thought through carefully. I never make half-hearted decisions. I just go for it, though I do take other people’s opinions into account.

Did you hit it off instantly? How did the two of you meet?

Johann: I was only 12 – too young to really figure out whether or not I liked someone. My dad was the one who really liked Laurent. Neither of us knew anything about bikes. When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to get taken in by a con artist and lose money. Then, in 2003, we met Laurent. He really knows his stuff, and he’s very honest about what he can do. And it worked out. My dad trusted Laurent. He sensed he was the right person. He was the one who discussed things with Laurent. I just did what I was told. Then, when I was around 17, my dad stepped out of the picture and Laurent and I started working one-on-one.

Laurent: The good thing about Johann was that when I told him to do something, he did it, and so he improved by leaps and bounds. Right from the start, he had two strong points: he could enter corners really fast, and he knew how to listen. Mutual respect is very important. You have to be able to be totally frank with each other.

Are you totally open with each other, or do you maintain a slight distance, like many fathers and sons?

Johann: Our relationship has evolved over time. When I was 18-19 and living full-time at Laurent’s place, it got a little strained, because he sees things in a certain way, and refuses to compromise. When I turned 24 I struck out on my own, and he became less of a father figure to me. Laurent was worried I’d get sloppy, but my performance showed him I could handle myself. These days we work hand in hand, but each of us has his own skills.

We’re a pretty smooth double act, and that’s the way we’ll keep going – hopefully all the way to a MotoGP world title.

Laurent: When I’ve got something to say, I come out and say it. I can’t just stand by and watch. If you want to be a diplomat, don’t get into motorcycle racing. There’s no room for diplomacy in racing. You have to make a contribution based on your experience; you have to be of use to the rider. There’s a point at which you have to be outspoken, and that’s what I do, even though I’m part of a team. That’s what I’m there for. I’m there for Johann, so I’ll speak out whenever I have to!

Johann, how does it help you to have Laurent’s trackside tips?

Johann: It’s different now. When I was familiarizing myself with the bike so I could keep upping my speed and I had to liaise with the team, things could sometimes get a little tricky. Laurent was a big help back then. He would tell me to do this, that or the other; to stop fiddling with the bike and just go for it. Now I’m better at sensing whether I have a good feeling with the bike. But Laurent can still immediately make out, from his trackside spot, whether I’m at the top of my form and riding well. He lets me know when I should stop forcing the bike. These days, it’s mainly during training that he gauges my form. By the time I start the race, I’ve been thoroughly primed, and I’m ready to go!

Laurent: On each circuit, there are always two key spots from where you can see whether or not the bike is in good nick. I watch carefully, talk to Johann about it, and that’s that.

Do you have a ritual? A post-race debrief to analyze how it went?

"Travailleur", "consciencieux", "studieux", "appliqué", "concentré", "culotté", "pugnace"… sont quelques-uns des qualificatifs que l’on peut lire concernant Johann. Y en a-t-il d’autres ?

Johann: No, there’s no ritual. We just go by instinct. We talk about it and if there’s something we need to fix, we fix it.

Johann : consciencieux et studieux, je le suis devenu en rencontrant Laurent, qui répétait toujours : « Il faut être très rigoureux, il faut y aller avec méthode. » Quand j’avais 13, 14, 15 ans, j’appliquais ça sur la moto; et ça m’a aidé à progresser, parce que je n’étais pas bon par rapport à plein d’autres, et à force de le faire, ça m’a aussi permis de progresser à l’école en ayant de meilleures notes. Mon père était heureux.

Hardworking. Conscientious. Painstaking. Focused. Audacious.

Combative. Those are some of the adjectives that journalists have used to describe Johann. Are there any others?

Johann: I learnt to be conscientious and painstaking after meeting Laurent, who kept telling me I had to be diligent and methodical. Back when I was 13, 14, 15 years old, I applied his advice to my riding and it helped me make progress, because I wasn’t half as good as many other riders. And once I’d got into the habit of being methodical, it also helped me to get better marks at school – which made my dad happy!

La méthode de Laurent peut-elle être appliquée au sein de votre structure Z&F Grand Prix School ?

Johann : Avec Laurent, on était toujours ensemble, j’étais son seul poulain et c’est rentré à force, comme ça. Laurent me disait quoi faire, et je le faisais. Mais tu n’en trouveras pas beaucoup, des jeunes pilotes qui fonctionnent comme ça, peut-être 2 sur 50. C’est pour ça que je pense que l’école Z&F Grand Prix à Eyguières va débloquer les choses. On aura une classe et un accès direct au circuit pour mettre en application et juger du résultat. On veut travailler dans la durée. On a la flamme ! Mais on vit dans une époque où les gens veulent se divertir sans que cela ne coûte rien, en termes d’argent et d’effort. La moto, ça peut représenter beaucoup d’argent dépensé pour peu de plaisir. Avec l’école Z&F Grand Prix, on veut donner du plaisir sans que ça coûte trop aux gens.

Can you use Laurent’s method at the Z&F Grand Prix school, which the two of you founded?

Johann: Laurent and I spend most of our time together. I was his only protégé, and so his advice really sank in over the years. Laurent would tell me what to do, and I’d do it. But you won’t find too many young riders who work that way: maybe 2 in every 50. That’s why I think the Z&F Grand Prix school in Eyguières will help. Students will be given access to the race track after each lesson so they can put what they’ve learnt into practice and get a performance appraisal. We want this to be a long-term project. We’re really excited about it. But these days people don’t necessarily want to put in a whole lot of money and effort. They just want to have fun. You can plough a lot of money into racing and not have much fun on the track. At the Z&F Grand Prix school, we want people to get that buzz without spending too much.

Donner confiance, montrer que c’est possible, oser y aller, ça peut être une vertu de l’école Z&F Grand Prix ?

Laurent : Attention, il ne faut pas trop assister les gens ! Il faut se mettre les mains dans le cambouis, s’investir, se bouger car ça ne vient pas tout seul.

Il faut une grosse motivation pour réussir.

Boosting confidence, showing it’s possible, pushing young riders to go for it: are those the goals of the Z&F Grand Prix school?

Johann : En 2003, lorsque nous avons rencontré Laurent, ce qui nous a motivés, c’est de rouler une séance ou une course sur une moto qui ne casse pas. Mon père ne connaissait rien à la mécanique. Si on n’avait pas rencontré Laurent, on aurait arrêté. D’où l’importance des bonnes rencontres, de gens qui ont de l’expérience.

Laurent: We don’t want to spoon-feed students. They have to get stuck in, invest the time and effort, be proactive. Success won’t happen by itself. You have to be really motivated to succeed.

Johann: When my dad and I met Laurent in 2003, we basically wanted for me to do some race sessions on a bike that wouldn’t keep breaking down.

My father had no clue about mechanics. If we hadn’t met Laurent, I’d have dropped out. That’s why it’s so important to meet the right people – experienced people.

Johann, tu disais en 2017 avoir besoin de métier pour progresser en MotoGP. Sur quels points seras-tu plus fort en 2018 qu’en 2017 ?

Johann : Déjà, l’habitude de rouler à 300 km/h. Maintenant, lorsque je monte sur une moto, je suis nettement plus tranquille, je dépense moins d’énergie qu’en 2017. Disons que j’ai plus d’énergie pour pouvoir me concentrer sur une meilleure performance. En 2017, j’ai dû réapprendre des choses pour exploiter le potentiel de la moto. Cette saison, au lieu de m’habituer et prendre confiance sur 7, 8, 9 ou 10 aspects du pilotage, j’ai l’impression que je n’en ai plus que 2 à cerner pour arriver à un niveau de record de piste ou de victoire en GP.

Johann, you said last year you needed more technique to improve your performance in MotoGP. What specific points will you have mastered in 2018?

Johann: The habit of riding at 300 km/h, for starters. Now, when I get on a bike I’m much more relaxed. I’m spending less energy than in 2017. Let’s say I have more energy to focus on enhancing my performance. In 2017 I had to re-learn some stuff to get the most out of my bike. This season, instead of having to get more familiar and confident with 7, 8, 9 or 10 aspects of riding, I’m fairly sure I just need to crack another 2 to manage a lap record or a race win.

Est-ce que tu auras plus de pression en 2018 ?

Johann : Non. J’ai appris ça en 2016, quand j’ai redoublé le titre de champion du monde, là, il y avait de la pression. La leçon de 2016, c’est prendre du plaisir et foncer, et c’est la meilleure manière d’évacuer la pression.

Will you be feeling more pressured this year?

Johann, sur un week-end de course, malgré toutes les contraintes, tu arrives à prendre du plaisir ?

Johann: No. When I was going after my second world champion title in 2016, I was under a lot of pressure. My takeaway from that experience was to just get out there and enjoy it. That’s the best way to survive the pressure.

Johann : Toujours ! Au moment où tu montes sur la moto, c’est une pure décharge d’adrénaline. C’est génial ! C’est pour ça que tu y vas, tu es concentré, presque en transe, parce que tu fais ce que tu aimes.

Do you manage to enjoy a race weekend despite all the pressure?

Laurent : Tu es obligé de te faire plaisir sur une moto, même si tu es 5e, 6e ou 7e, sinon tu prends le cuir et tu raccroches.

Johann: Absolutely. When you get on the bike, it’s a pure rush of adrenaline. It’s an incredible feeling. That’s why you do it. You’re totally focused. It’s almost like you’re in trance, because you’re doing what you love.

Laurent: You have to have fun when you’re on your bike, even if you finish 5th or 6th or 7th. Otherwise, you might as well hang up your leathers.

Comment considérez-vous ta Yamaha Tech 3 par rapport à la Yamaha d’usine ?

How does your Tech 3 Yamaha compare to the factory Yamaha?

Johann : Elle est très bien. Il y a tellement de puissance à utiliser que le pilote joue encore un rôle majeur.

Laurent : Entre une Honda privée et d’usine, il y a une grosse différence, alors qu’avec la Yamaha, les écarts sont plus serrés. L’avantage de l’usine, c’est de gagner en étant à 100 %, et d’être sur le podium quand ça va moins bien. Alors que nous, quand tout va bien, on est à 80 ou 90 % d’une usine.

Pour être champion, il faut accéder aux 100 % d’une moto officielle.

Johann, tu roules tout le temps à la limite, à 100 %, ou as-tu une petite marge de réserve pour un ultime assaut ?

Johann : À un moment, tu ne peux pas en faire plus, ne serait-ce que par rapport à la dégradation du pneu arrière. Tu peux essayer de rentrer plus vite en virage, mais si ton arrière ne tient plus, tu ne pourras pas rattraper le temps à la sortie. Donc, tu te retrouves dans une zone très proche du 100 %, mais ce n’est pas la même énergie que sur un tour chrono. En qualif, là, t’es vraiment à 100 %, et tu compenses tout par ton corps pour gagner 4 ou 5 dixièmes sur un tour. En course, sur 20 tours, je ne peux pas tout compenser, donc tu es à 100 %, mais la compensation, tu ne la fais plus, parce qu’avec le pneu qui se dégrade, elle ne te sert à rien. Sur un tour, tu peux forcer plus sur la moto. À un moment, c'est utile de tenir la moto car elle va moins bouger, tu vas mieux passer entre 2 virages, mais cette énergie, tu ne la mets pas sur 20 tours. Par contre, l’entraînement fait que ton 100 % sans la compensation, tu l’augmentes au fur et à mesure de l’expérience.

En supermotard, on a repris l’entraînement en janvier, sur 2 sessions de 2 jours, et le 4e jour, j’arrivais à des performances que je ne pouvais pas faire le premier jour.

Johann: It’s a great bike. You get so much power out of it, and that gives the rider a real chance to play with it.

Laurent: There’s a big difference between the bikes the Honda independent teams run and the factory machines. With Yamaha, there’s not that much of a difference. The advantage with a factory bike is that you win when you’re giving 100%, but you still get a podium finish when things don’t go as well as you hoped. Whereas in our case, when everything’s going well we’re at 80 or 90% of what a factory bike can do. You have to get 100% out of a factory bike to be world champion.

Johann, you’re always flat out. Do you keep something back for a last-minute attack?

Johann: You come to a point where you can’t do anything more with the bike – if nothing else because of wear on the rear tyre. You can try entering corners faster, but if your rear tyre’s lost grip you can’t catch up coming out.

So you find you’re practically in the 100% zone, but it’s not the same energy as on a timed lap. In qualifying you really are at 100%, and you compensate with your body to shave 4 or 5 tenths off a lap. I can’t keep compensating for 20 laps in the actual race. So you’re riding at 100%, but you stop compensating because with the tyre wearing out, there’s no point. You can force on the bike over one lap. You can hold the bike hard to not have too much movement, so you’ll go faster between two corners, but you can’t put in that energy over 20 laps. What you can do through training is to gradually increase your 100% without compensation as you get more experienced.

We picked up our supermoto training again in January with 2 two-day sessions, and on the fourth day I was clocking performances I hadn’t been able to achieve on the first day.

Laurent : C’est normal, le cerveau s’est arrêté pendant un mois, automatiquement, l’ordinateur ne fonctionne plus. Tu pilotes avec agressivité et petit à petit, comme un réglage sur banc d’essais, tu canalises cela et tu retrouves ton niveau.

Laurent: That’s normal. You put your brain on standby for a month, so obviously the computer isn’t responding. You start out riding aggressively and then you gradually channel the energy and get back up to your level. It’s a bit like fine-tuning test bench settings.

Certains pilotes ont des rituels avant la course, pour se mettre dans une bulle : besoin de s’isoler, d’écouter de la musique. C’est ton cas, Johann ?

Some riders have pre-race rituals to get into their own little world, to isolate themselves, like listening to music. What about you, Johann?

Johann : Plutôt de l’isolement, des étirements, c’est ce qui me permet de rentrer dans ma bulle. Il le faut, parce qu’à un moment, tu es dans un autre monde. J’ai appris à me concentrer dès la pocket bike. En MotoGP, tu sens que tu en as vraiment besoin parce que dépasser les 300 km/h nécessite de se mettre en condition.

Johann: I don’t isolate myself. I do stretches to help me get inside my own little bubble. I learnt to concentrate right from my mini bike days. In MotoGP, you really need to concentrate. You have to be in the right frame of mind to race at speeds of more than 300 km/h.

Quel est le dernier mot de Laurent avant l’entrée en piste ?

What’s the last thing Laurent says to you before you get on the track?

Laurent : Je dis rien, maintenant je ne dis plus rien (rires).

Laurent: Nothing. I don’t say anything anymore [Laughs].

Johann : On se regarde à peine, on sait tous les deux… Une fois, lors d’un Grand Prix, je ne sais plus si on s’est serré la main ou pris dans les bras pour dire, « allez, au feu », et ça n’a pas marché (rires). Donc, on ne le fait plus ! Mais on sait tous les deux avant chaque départ qu’on ne le fait plus pour ça, sans se le dire.

Johann: We barely even look at each other, and we both know why. Once, before a Grand Prix, we shook hands or hugged – I can’t remember which – to say ‘OK, this is it’, and the race didn’t go well [Laughs]. So now we don’t do that anymore. But though we’ve never talked about it, at the start of every race we both know that’s the reason we don’t do it.

Est-ce que vous travaillez la préparation mentale ?

Do you do a lot of mental preparation?

Johann : Mon exercice mental s’est fait avec l’expérience. Supporter Laurent et croire en lui, c’est déjà un gros travail mental et c’est ça qui m’a fait évoluer (sourire). J’ai toujours cru en Laurent et je fonce, sans me poser trop de questions. Y croire à fond, c’est LA force du mental.

Johann:My mental attitude comes from my experience. It takes a lot of mental effort on my part to put up with Laurent and keep trusting his judgement [Laughs]. That’s how I’ve improved. I’ve always believed in Laurent, and I go for it without thinking about it too much. Becoming totally convinced you can do it: that’s what mental training does for you.

Quel est le cahier des charges d’un bon vêtement d’été ?

Un vêtement d’été Furygan doit répondre aux mêmes normes de protection qu’un équipement d’hiver, privilégier la respirabilité et une bonne circulation de l’air, tout en gardant un poids relativement contenu.

Donc, un vêtement d’été est un vêtement d’hiver allégé et avec des aérations ?

Ce n’est pas aussi simple. Les matières sont différentes, notamment au niveau des doublures. On cherche chaleur et étanchéité sur un vêtement d’hiver, alors qu’en été, on met en avant le confort par forte température, la sensation de fraîcheur, ainsi qu’une évacuation performante de la transpiration avec des fibres spécifiques.

C’est principalement une question de matières ?

Pas seulement. Il y a une nette différence d’ergonomie entre un équipement dédié à l’hiver (gants ou blouson), et un autre pour rouler en été. Votre équipement sera plus près du corps, pour éviter tout flottement de matière qui pourrait devenir une gêne. Nous avons donc plusieurs tailles en fonction de la saisonnalité du produit, pour assurer que vous puissiez toujours utiliser la même taille comme repère, avec un vêtement qui offre toujours le meilleur en termes de confort et de protection. Ce paramètre ergonomique, le bon maintien des protections, est d’ailleurs un critère d’homologation. Assurez-vous, lors du choix de votre équipement, à la bonne tenue de celles-ci.

L’homologation d’un vêtement d’été est-elle importante sur d’autres points ?

Oui. Il y a moins de couches superposées sur un blouson, un gant ou un pantalon d’été, que sur l’équivalent conçu pour la mi-saison ou l’hiver. Ce qui en fait un vêtement plus complexe à homologuer. Si, désormais, l’homologation des gants est une obligation, donner votre préférence à un blouson dont la conception aura été validée par un laboratoire indépendant, c’est un gage de sérieux.

Pour Furygan, qui fait homologuer ses blousons comme EPI ("Équipements de protection individuelle") depuis 2011, l’ajout de matières permettant des flux d’air se fait en fonction du besoin de ventilation, mais aussi de la résistance à l’abrasion et à la déchirure.

Technique, confort et design sont alors étroitement liés ?

Nous réinterprétons le design de notre bureau de style pour l’adapter aux contraintes de normalisation des EPI moto, tout en essayant de procurer le maxi-

mum de confort aux motards. Ainsi lorsqu’un vêtement doit être perforé – comme l'Arrow dans sa version « Vented » (cf. page 70) - , nous devons veiller au placement des zones de perforation. S’il n’est pas perforé, tel le Kenya (cf. page 78), nous veillons à la respirabilité de la doublure intérieure, qui doit avoir des capacités d’évacuation de la transpiration supérieure. Le tout est mis en parallèle avec la matière extérieure qui, si elle répond aux exigences de confort et de design, peut ne pas convenir en termes de résistance. Cela donne alors naissance à des doublures de type Skin Protect, qui peuvent devenir extrêmement complexes de par leur assemblage de multiples matières et leurs constructions millimétrées dont dépend la sécurité de l’utilisateur. La technicité d’un blouson d’été ne s’arrête pas à la qualité de sa ventilation. Surtout que tout le monde ne vit pas le même été !

Pouvez-vous être plus précise ?

Prenons l’exemple de la France. L’été à Strasbourg n’est pas le même qu’à Marseille. En août, les relevés montrent que l’écart entre les températures maximales et minimales moyennes est assez proche. De l’ordre de 11 °C pour ces deux villes. À ceci près que dans le Sud, la température moyenne ne descend jamais sous les 20 °C, alors qu’elle atteint les 15 °C dans l’Est. Sans parler des valeurs extrêmes.

Le motard alsacien appréciera donc une couche supplémentaire le matin, alors que notre Marseillais n’en ressentira pas le besoin. Et encore, on ne parle là que de températures ! À Clermont-Ferrand, par exemple, en août, la température peut franchir les 35 °C, alors que la saison la plus pluvieuse est… l’été.

Ces particularités vous obligent à vous adapter à chaque continent ?

Oui car chaque pays dans lesquels nos vêtements sont commercialisés a ses spécificités. De l’humidité en Malaisie à la sécheresse dans certains états américains. C’est pourquoi Furygan développe une vaste gamme de solutions de produits d’été. Du 100 % ventilé (comme le Genesis Mistral, page 70) au 3-en-1 (telle la Vulcain 3en1, page 76), offrant une doublure thermique amovible ainsi qu’une doublure prévue pour la pluie. Des doublures qui peuvent aussi venir prendre place dans une coque 100 % ventilée comme sur le Swirl 3en1 (page 73), et toujours à l’intérieur pour des raisons d’ergonomie, d’encombrement et de préservation des membranes. Cette grande polyvalence est notre réponse au défi que représentent les grandes variations climatiques rencontrées l’été : ainsi, nous pouvons proposer aux motards la meilleure option en fonction de leurs contraintes.

What are the Furygan specs for warm weather gear?

Every item in our summer catalogue has to offer as much protection as our winter gear. But it also needs to be breathable and lightweight, and boost airflow.

So the summer gear is basically a lighter version of the winter gear with lots of vents?

It’s not that simple. We use different materials, especially for the linings.

Our winter clothing has to be warm and waterproof, whereas for our summer range we focus on keeping riders comfortable and cool in hot weather, using special moisture-wicking fabrics that draw sweat away from the body to make it evaporate faster.

It’s mainly about getting the fabric right, then.

Not just the fabric. There’s quite a difference between an item of winter clothing (a pair of gloves or a jacket) and summer clothing in terms of ergonomics. Your summer gear will be more close-fitting to eliminate any flapping, which can be distracting. So we have different cuts depending which season the product is for. This means that, using the same basic size, you can find the item with the best comfort and protection for your specific needs. An ergonomic fit, with every piece of body armour firmly in place, is a requirement for certification, by the way. When you’re choosing your gear, make sure the protectors don’t shift out of position.

Anything else we should know about CE-approved summer gear?

Yes. A summer jacket, pant or glove has fewer layers than an item designed for use in spring, autumn or winter, so it’s harder to get it certified.

It is now against the law in France to ride without CE-certified gloves. As for jackets, it’s safest to choose one that has been checked for compliance by an independent testing lab.

Since 2011, we’ve had our jackets tested and certified in line with the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) directive. That means any material we use to provide added air flow must also meet the standard for abrasion resistance and cut resistance.

You’re saying features and specification go hand in hand with comfort and design.

Here at the Motion Lab, we tweak the designs our in-house designers create so they conform to PPE regulations while offering the rider the hi-

ghest level of comfort. So if we need to pierce a jacket – e.g. the Vented version of the Arrow (see page 70) – we’ll make sure the perforations are in exactly the right places. For a non-perforated jacket like the Kenya (see page 78), we’ll use a breathable inner lining that draws perspiration away from the skin. Meantime, we have to see how it all matches up with the outer fabric, which could tick all the boxes in terms of comfort and design but not be hardwearing enough. That’s how we come up with linings like Skin Protect, which are complex to make. They incorporate different materials, and build quality has to be superb because the rider’s safety depends on it. Ventilation is just one aspect of a good summer motorcycle jacket. Especially since we don’t all experience the same weather in summer !

What do you mean?

Well, take France. Summer in Strasbourg isn’t the same as summer in Marseille. In both cities, the difference between the day and night temperature is roughly 11°C in the month of August. But down south, the temperature never drops below 20°C, whereas it can drop to 15°C in eastern France – where an unseasonable cold snap is not unheard-of. So your motorcyclist in Alsace will be glad of an extra layer of a morning, whereas a Marseille rider won’t ever need it. And the temperature’s not the only factor to take into consideration. It can get up to 35°C in August in Clermont-Ferrand, but summer also happens to be the town’s rainiest season.

So you design your clothing to suit weather conditons in different countries.

ALAIN PRIEUR Le cascadeur Alain Prieur cultivait la peur et les défis pour exister pleinement. Le point culminant de sa carrière moto ? Un saut de 84,30 mètres, avec un tremplin olympique de saut à ski comme rampe de lancement. C'était en 1988. Du grand art !

ous y étions, ce jour-là, à Saint-Nizier, face au mont Blanc, au pied du majestueux tremplin construit pour les Jeux Olympiques d’hiver de 1968. La vue en haut du tremplin est un spectacle à part entière. D’ici, le saut d’Alain semble encore plus démesuré et insensé. La pente est si abrupte que la descente à pied est dangereuse. Dès le premier mètre, le tremplin qui surplombe Grenoble vous jette dans le vide sur un plancher finalisé par des lignes rouges qu’il faut viser, ensuite, c’est le décollage vers la zone de réception cachée dans l’ombre et que le cascadeur, au moment de son envol, ne voit pas. Avec son staff d’ingénieurs, Alain Prieur a tout calculé, en fonction de son objectif : effectuer un bond de 100 mètres et reprendre son record du monde détenu du 15 août 1974 au 31 août 1986. À partir d’une pente à 35 degrés sur plus de 70 mètres, il faut une vitesse de sortie de 120 km/h pour effectuer un saut d’une longueur horizontale de 86 mètres et une dénivelée de 50 mètres. La réception se fera au milieu, dans la zone inclinée à 39 degrés avec une vitesse horizontale et verticale de 112 km/h, qui se traduisent par une vitesse tangentielle à la piste de 158 km/h. Durée du saut : 2, 7 secondes. Encore faut-il avoir l’audace de se lancer : « Ma motivation repose sur des convictions techniques et théoriques bien plus que sur la bravoure.

Techniquement, le coup est jouable, mais j’ai besoin de me reposer sur les autres.

Je m’avachis sur eux, j’ai besoin de leur faire porter le poids de ce saut. C’est sûrement le plus dangereux. Sur un tremplin, tout est calculé en fonction d’un skieur qui glisse, qui décolle avec ou sans impulsion, qui vole et corrige son assiette et qui se pose. Il arrive qu’une chute sanctionne un mauvais saut, mais la configuration du terrain et l’absence d’obstacle limite toujours la casse. Une moto ne glisse pas, elle roule. Elle décolle aussi, plutôt sans impulsion. Elle vole, moins portée qu’un skieur et avec une assiette qui reste le point sensible du jeu », analyse Alain Prieur.

Pour appréhender son saut, il a logé une semaine sur place, apprivoisant la bête de béton qu’il va devoir défier. En cas de pépin, il pourra peut-être actionner son « hand deploy », un parachute latéral positionné au niveau de la cuisse…

French stuntman Alain Prieur used fear as his motivator, constantly pushing himself to the edge to live life to the hilt. In 1988, he did the last and most spectacular jump of his motorcycling career, flying a distance of 84.30 metres (275 feet) off an Olympic ski jump.

n that day in 1988, we were among the spectators milling around at the foot of the majestic ski jump built for the 1968 Winter Olympics in the alpine village of Saint-Nizier facing Mont Blanc. The view alone is worth the climb to the top of the ramp. From here, Alain’s jump seems even more insane. The slope is so steep that it’s dangerous even to walk downhill. From the very first metre of the ramp towering above the town of Grenoble, the rider plunges into a near-vertical drop down to the take-off point, from where he soars into the air, flying – blind – as far as he can over the landing slope hidden in the shadows. Alain Prieur and his team of engineers did the maths to help him achieve his goal of performing a 100-metre jump to wrest back the world record he had held from 15 August 1974 to 31 August 1986. Starting from an in-run gradient of 35 degrees over 70 metres, he would have to launch off at a speed of 120 km/h to jump a horizontal distance of 86 metres with a 50-metre incline. He would land in the middle of the landing area, with a 39-degree slope and a horizontal and vertical velocity of 112 km/h.

Time airborne: 2.7 seconds. ‘I’m not doing this jump to prove I’m fearless,’ Alain explained at the time. ‘I’m doing it because I’m convinced it’s technically feasible.

But I need to rely on my team, to put myself entirely into their hands. I need to give them the entire responsibility for this jump. That’s probably the most dangerous thing. A ski jumping hill is geared to skiers, who glide down the in-run, take off with varying degrees of momentum, correct their body position as they fly through the air, then land. A bad jump can cause a botched landing, but the slope construction and lack of obstacles reduce injuries. You can’t glide down on a motorcycle.

There’s no lift when you’re airborne, and if you don’t maintain your body position you’ll get thrown off the bike.’ Alain spent a week in Saint-Nizier preparing his jump and getting the measure of the concrete beast he was preparing to confront.

If things went wrong, he would be able to activate a hand-deployed parachute strapped to the side of his thigh.

cassée, les sauveteurs le découvrent riant aux éclats de cet échec et mat à une faucheuse qui lui tendait les bras. Ses exploits prennent une tout autre dimension car ses réceptions se font désormais via un parachute : saut des falaises du Cap Canaille en 1983, des gorges du Verdon en 1985, des falaises d’Avoriaz en 1986…

Aujourd’hui, dimanche 9 octobre 1988, Alain Prieur est au sommet de son art, en quête du geste parfait, dans une discipline si dangereuse qu’elle ne compte pratiquement pas d’adeptes. Si la peur est toujours là, le risque est calculé, validé par les fédérations française et internationale de motocyclisme, associées au projet, lui assurant une portée médiatique importante. Fini le temps, dans les années 70, où Alain carburait à l’envie et se blessait chaque année, victime de son enthousiasme et de ses excès d’optimisme. Et sans égaler le record d’une quarantaine de fractures en soixante-quinze sauts de son homologue américain Evel Knievel, Alain a payé un lourd tribut à la cascade. D’une passion née au début des 70’S, il a fait son métier, multipliant les coups d’éclat sur deux-roues : survol de 23 voitures à Tokyo en 1979 ; saut au-dessus d’un chalet à Pra-Loup en 1981 ; d’un avion en vol en 1983 ; à travers un cercle fixé sur une voiture évoluant sur deux roues en 1984… Et dès le début, les records tombent : 45,25 m en 1974, 53,80 m en 1975, 55,70 m en 1976, 64,60 m en 1977… Comme si le spectacle à moto n’était pas assez grandiose, Alain ajoute le parachutisme à son arc. Une discipline dans laquelle il évolue avec maestria, s’illustrant par des sauts d’une audace folle, dont ceux, dès 1986 en Afrique, sans parachute, l’obligeant à récupérer un ventral avec un autre parachutiste en l’air. Sensations fortes garanties. Lors d’un jump au Burkina Fasso, son parachute se met en torche et Alain se réceptionne violemment dans les branches d’un baobab, entorse du genou et cheville

Un dernier saut comme une œuvre d’art Durant toutes ces années, Furygan est l’indéfectible partenaire d’Alain Prieur, l’habillant d’une combinaison en cuir pour les sauts à moto et d’un ensemble textile pour les sauts en parachute. Et pour son dernier exploit à moto, dans sa tenue Furygan blanc et rouge, Alain s’adresse aux 4 000 spectateurs en communion au pied du tremplin. À ce public qu’il aime tant, il livre ce message qui résonne encore : « Quoi qu’il arrive, je dis bien “quoiqu’il arrive”, je veux vous dire que je suis heureux. » Silence de plomb dans la foule. Les visages sont tendus.

Alain enfourche sa Maico 440 de dix ans d’âge qu’il n’a pas voulu préalablement tester, et qui crépite d’un son métallique dans un nuage de fumée bleue, puis il s’élance… Tout va très vite ! La foule retient son souffle, les yeux sont rivés sur la pente d’où émerge Alain dans le vide. La roue arrière se pose, sous le choc, son corps s’incline légèrement vers l’avant. Les deux roues sont maintenant au sol.

Le public explose de joie ! Dans l’action, Alain a oublié de passer une vitesse et n’a pas franchi la barre symbolique des 100 mètres, mais il améliore le record du monde de plus de 10 mètres dans ce vol à haut risque. Chapeau l’artiste !

Around this time, he also started doing spectacular motorcycle parachute jumps in France, flying his motorbike off the Cap Canaille cliffs in 1983, the Gorges du Verdon in 1985 and the cliffs of Avoriaz in 1986.

By the time he made his Saint-Nizier attempt on Sunday 9 October 1988, Alain Prieur had got jumping down to a fine art. That day, he was aiming to achieve a perfect feat in a sport so dangerous only a handful of people attempt it. He hadn’t overcome his fear, but this time he was taking a calculated risk. He had backing from the French and international motorcycling federations, and the attendant media coverage. The days when – fuelled by adrenalin and optimism – Alain sustained serious injuries year after year were long gone. Though he never topped his American counterpart Evel Knievel’s record of 40-odd broken bones in 75 jump attempts, Alain paid a heavy price for his exploits. He turned the passion he had discovered back in the early 1970s into a career, pulling off one daredevil stunt after another on a motorbike: soaring over 23 cars in Tokyo in 1979; clearing a chalet in Pra-Loup in 1981; jumping from a ramp over a plane taking off in 1983; leaping through a circle on the roof of a car being driven on two wheels in 1984. He broke distance records right from the outset: 45.25 metres in 1974, 53.80 metres in 1975, 55.70 metres in 1976, 64.60 metres in 1977. And as if his motorcycle jumping feats weren’t spectacular enough, Alain added parachuting stunts to his arsenal. He took to skydiving like a duck to water, performing insane jumps like the one he did without a parachute in Africa in 1986, hooking up in mid-air with another skydiver. During a jump in Burkina Faso, his parachute got twisted and Alain crashed headlong into the branches of a baobab, ending up with a twisted knee and a broken ankle. The rescue team got there a short time

A masterpiece of a final jump Furygan gave Alain unfailing support through the years, providing him with leather suits for his motorcycle jumps and textile suits for his skydiving feats.

In 1988, Alain appeared at the top of the ramp before his final motorcycle jump attempt dressed in his trademark red and white Furygan suit and spoke to the 4,000 spectators gathered further down the slope. ‘Whatever happens,’ he said, ‘I want you to know I’m happy.’ A deathly hush fell over the crowd. Alain got on his bike – a 10-year-old Maico 440 he’d refused to use for a practice run. The bike sputtered into life with a metallic sound and a blue cloud of exhaust smoke, and he was off. The crowd held its collective breath. All eyes turned to the landing slope as Alain emerged, seemingly out of thin air. His back wheel hit the ground and his body arched forward under the impact. Then, as the front wheel landed, the crowd exploded with joy. In the heat of the moment, Alain forgot to switch gears as he came down the ramp and so he didn’t accomplish his 100-metre leap.

But he shaved more than 10 metres off the existing world record on that perilous jump. An extraordinary feat!

They’ve pushed themselves out of their comfort zone – in front of TV cameras – for their first shot at a technique many riders dream about: getting a knee down. Bader Benlekehal, the producer and presenter of the French TV show HighSide, tells us why he wanted them to try this particular feat, and why he asked Furygan to supply the gear.

Bien sûr. C’est aussi pour ça qu’on n’a pas fait le choix d’acheter X cuirs de toutes les tailles, avec nos logos, à un obscur fabricant. On a choisi Furygan aussi parce que la qualité du matériel n’est plus à démontrer. Les célébrités n’ont pas le droit de se blesser. Elles rapportent énormément d’argent à des chaînes, ou à des sponsors pour les sportifs. Même vis-à-vis de la perception des célébrités, c’était important. Tous connaissaient déjà la marque, avaient vu la panthère, ça les a rassurés.

Tu as pensé à la chute ?

Malgré notre nom à consonance anglo-saxonne, nous sommes fiers que la seule émission 100 % moto au monde soit française. L’histoire de la moto en France est méconnue et extrêmement riche. Si on peut participer à cet élan en montrant le dynamisme de l’industrie de la moto dans l’Hexagone, ça nous va bien. Dans le domaine de l’équipement, la France est assez forte. Si on devait équiper des célébrités avec du matériel, je voulais que ce soit français. Et il y a une marque que nous connaissions très bien, et avec laquelle nous avions déjà beaucoup travaillé par le passé sur Moto et Motards (NDLR : l’émission HighSide est animée par l’équipe du magazine Moto et Motards), c’est Furygan. Nos contraintes de tournage faisaient qu’on n’avait pas le temps d’envoyer les célébrités se faire mesurer, ou faire des essais chez les fabricants.

Il me fallait un partenaire réactif, qui soit proche géographiquement, avec du bon matos et une bonne expérience des combinaisons. Je savais aussi que si Furygan se joignait à l’équipe, ils allaient débouler avec un technicien, un camion, tous les cuirs avec les logos Highside, les gants, des dorsales… et que ça allait rouler. On avait raison. Avoir un partenaire nous fait dépendre de quelqu’un d’autre, c’est une contrainte. D’où l’enjeu du choix de partenaires réactifs, bien conscients de nos besoins.

Pourquoi avoir choisi Furygan comme partenaire protection ?

Yes, of course. That’s one of the reasons we didn’t buy a whole bunch of leathers in various sizes with our logo on them from some unknown manufacturer. We chose Furygan suits because they’re made of top-quality material. Our celebrity guests aren’t supposed to get injured. They generate big profits for television networks – or for sponsors, in the case of the sportspeople we interview. Besides, a crash could hurt the person’s public image. All the guests we’ve had on the show so far had heard of the brand, and they were reassured by the sight of the panther logo.

Did you think about possible crashes?

Our show may have an English name, but it’s 100% French. In fact, French motorcycling has a rich history that is well worth discovering. We hope we’re contributing to publicizing our motorcycling industry. A lot of companies in France make great motorcycle clothing and accessories.

So I definitely wanted the people who appear on the show to be wearing French gear. We were very familiar with one brand in particular because we’d often worked with them back when we were doing Moto et Motards [Ed: HighSide is put together by the team behind French motorcycling magazine Moto et Motards]. And that’s Furygan. With our tight shooting schedule, there was no way we could get the celebs to the factory to be measured up and again for a fitting. Our gear supplier had to be very responsive, and geographically close. And, of course, have the right manufacturing equipment and plenty of experience making race suits. I knew that if Furygan joined our set-up, they would show up with a truck, a technician, the suits with the HighSide logo on them, the gloves, the back protectors, you name it. I knew it could work. And I was right.

When you take on a partner, you’re dependent on them. It’s a constraint. That’s why we opted for a partner who would understand what we needed and give us quick turnaround.

Why did you opt for Furygan protective gear?

Before they start, they find the suit is heavy and cumbersome. By the end of the ride, they feel like knights in shining armour. There’s something noble about the suit. They identify with it. They don’t want to take it off because it feels so comfortable.

And once they’ve pulled off the challenge?

they climb into the suit, they say it feels uncomfortable; they find it oppressive. They’re thinking: I’m wearing this thing, but I’ve no idea what I’m actually doing here. Maybe I’m making a huge mistake. At that particular moment, the suit symbolizes the challenge they’ve agreed to take up.

This is it. It’s actually happening. They begin to take in the roar of the engines (and sometimes an ambulance siren) as bikes speed round the nearby track. It makes a big impact on them. As they zip up their leathers, you can sense the anxiety radiating off them. Is this normal? they ask.

Is it normal that I can’t move my arms this way? Is it normal if I can’t reach back and scratch my back? We tell them it’s perfectly fine, it’s just to go riding: now let’s get that knee down! [Laughs].

When they pick up their leathers, they all react the same way. They say the suit feels heavy – though I think they’re mostly feeling the weight of the task ahead of them. [Laughs]. When

How do they react when you show them their protective gear?

They go through stages. The first time they get nervy is when we ride into the circuit along the track safety lane. The Paul Ricard circuit, where the Bol d'Or 24-hour race takes place – it’s also where the French Formula One Grand Prix is making its return this year, by the way – can seem pretty daunting the first time you see it. It’s gigantic. When our celebrities show up, there’s always this long silence. The width of the track and the length of the straights give you a good idea of the kind of speeds you can reach on the circuit. The interview part is something they do a lot on TV, so they’re used to it, even though we give them a bit of a hard time. So they start to relax. And then they start feeling stressed all over again when it’s time to put on their gear.

But it must be quite stressful for them.

During the interview, which takes place on a sofa plonked in the middle of the Paul Ricard circuit, we make a few jokes, poke fun at them, have a few laughs. We don’t kowtow to them just because they’re famous. And, as often as not, they have some witty comebacks!

Quand ils prennent le cuir dans les mains, ils ont toujours la même réaction. Ils trouvent ça extrêmement lourd. En fait, je crois que le poids qu’ils ressentent, c’est l’enjeu de la journée (rires) !

Quand ils l’enfilent, au début, ça n’est pas agréable, ça semble oppressant. Ils n’ont pas l’habitude. Ils se disent « je porte ce truc, je ne sais pas où je vais, je me demande si je ne fais pas une énorme connerie… ». Le cuir, à ce moment, symbolise leur défi. Et puis, c’est du concret, ça y est,

La combinaison, les gants, ça les impressionne ?

En fait, ça monte par paliers. Le premier, c’est quand on arrive sur la piste par les voies de sécurité. Le circuit Paul-Ricard, qui accueille le Bol d’Or et sera le lieu du retour du Grand Prix de France de F1, est extrêmement impressionnant quand on le voit pour la première fois. C’est gigantesque. Quand ils y arrivent, il y a toujours un grand silence. La largeur de la piste et la longueur des lignes droites te donnent une bonne idée des vitesses que tu peux atteindre ici.

Alors l’interview, même si on leur rentre un peu dedans, c’est le jeu de la télé, ils connaissent. Ça les détend. Mais le deuxième coup de stress arrive, il va falloir aller s’équiper…

Pourtant le stress doit être palpable ?

Pendant l’interview, qui a lieu sur un canapé posé au milieu du circuit Paul-Ricard, on vanne un peu, on chambre, on joue avec elles. On ne leur cire vraiment pas les pompes, et bien souvent, elles ont du répondant !

You certainly don’t do the celebrities any favours.

We made HighSide as a web series, but we already knew we wanted to turn it into a TV show.

The format was geared to television. Once we’d put the series online, we surprised networks by showing them it’s possible to talk about motorcycles for one full hour. They were even more surprised to discover it could be done exactly like on TV: in a studio, with a live audience and presenters. Even so, we couldn’t get any of the leading channels interested. We were still too special-interest to appeal to general audiences. So I asked myself: ‘What’s the one motorcycle-related image everyone can relate to?’ There’s the wheelie, and then there’s the knee-down technique, which is something racers do. It gets across the idea of going fast and taking risks, and most people have seen it being done at least once in their lives. We decided to feature one segment in which we’d teach someone to get their knee down for the first time. By choosing a different celebrity for each episode, we were targeting a wider audience. We figured it would be fun to take a famous person out of their comfort zone and get to know more about them by tapping into their passion for motorcycling. Especially if we did a bit of mickey-taking.

C’est vrai que tu n’es pas tendre avec les célébrités…

Bader, how did you get the idea? It’s quite audacious.

Quand on a sorti HighSide sur le web, le but était déjà d’être en télé. Son format était calé pour ça. La mise en ligne nous permettait d’aller voir des diffuseurs avec une surprise : on peut tenir une heure en parlant de moto. Deuxième surprise, on peut le faire à la façon télé, avec un plateau, du public, et des animateurs. Cependant, ça ne suffisait pas pour intéresser une grande chaîne nationale. On était encore trop pointus, pas assez grand public. Alors je me suis demandé « quelle est l’image de la moto que tout le monde pourrait connaître ? ». Il y a la roue arrière, et puis le genou au sol, issu de la compétition. Un vrai symbole, synonyme de vitesse, de risque, et que tout le monde a dû voir une fois. Alors on a décidé de créer une rubrique où l’on apprendrait à poser le genou à quelqu’un qui ne l’a jamais fait. Une célébrité, pour élargir encore plus la cible. Et puis, c’est amusant de faire sortir une star de sa zone de confort, et de pouvoir la découvrir à travers sa passion pour la moto. Surtout que le ton est décalé.

The first one was Grégory Mallet [Ed: Grégory is one of the faces of Furygan: see our interview with him in Furymag #1, available on our website] – a swimmer who has thrice competed in the Olympic Games – that’s quite a longevity record for Olympic swimming. He’s a sportsman. A technician. He approached the challenge very methodically – mechanically, even, like he was in a pool attempting the most aesthetic and most efficient movement. So he wasn’t the fastest to get his knee down, but all in all he was definitely the one with the fastest corner entry.

Le premier, c’est Grégory Mallet (NDLR : Grégory est ambassadeur Furygan, retrouvez son interview dans le numéro 1 du FuryMag, disponible sur notre site web), un nageur qui a la particularité d’avoir participé à 3 Jeux Olympiques. Une énorme performance de longévité en natation. C’est un sportif, un technicien. Il a abordé le défi de manière très méthodique, voire mécanique. Comme dans un bassin, pour avoir le beau mouvement, le plus efficace. Du coup, il n’a pas été le plus rapide à poser le genou, mais quand tout a été mis bout à bout, c’est sans aucun doute lui qui a acquis la vitesse de passage en courbe la plus élevée.

The other go-getter was the actor and filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz. I remember it was threatening to rain when we filmed his sequence. He just wanted to keep on riding. In fact, he was still riding when the rest of us were getting changed at the end of the day [Laughs]. But he was the only one who really wanted to get out there straightaway. The others would have been quite happy to have another coffee first. That guy has very few mental limits. He doesn’t hold back. He’s a real free spirit; what he really wants is to try out new experiences.

L’autre fonceur, c’est Mathieu Kassovitz. En plus, sur son tournage, il y avait un risque de pluie. Ce qu’il voulait, c’était rouler, le plus possible. D’ailleurs, à la fin de la journée, on se changeait, lui, il roulait encore (rires) ! Mais c’est le seul qui voulait vraiment y aller. Les autres auraient bien repris un petit café avant… C’est un mec qui a peu de limites psychologiquement, il ne se met pas de barrières. Un vrai homme libre, qui a surtout envie de vivre des choses.

I would group them into three categories: go-getter/technician/cautious. The actor Tomer Sisley – the first one to give it a try – is a go-getter. He was raring to go as soon as we suggested it to him. Later on, I heard he’d insisted on doing all the stunts himself, like Tom Cruise. Definitely the right profile for our show! He’s crazy about motorsports: he thrives on the adrenaline rush. He dives right in, soaks up new riding techniques, then goes out to test them on the track. And since he loves extreme sports, he makes comparisons – like he compared leaning a motorcycle to edging while skiing. So he started out on a sound footing and pulled off the stunt quite easily.

Je les classerais en 3 catégories : les fonceurs, les techniciens et les prudents. Tomer Sisley, qui a été la première star a tenter l’aventure, est un fonceur. Lorsqu’on lui a proposé le défi il était bouillant. Ce n’est qu’après que j’ai appris que, comme Tom Cruise, il tenait à faire toutes ses cascades lui même. Un bon client pour nous ! Derrière l’acteur il y a un fanatique absolu de sport mécaniques et d’adrénaline, qui se plonge avec rigueur dans les détails techniques du pilotage pour les appliquer sans hésitation sur la piste. Et puis son amour pour les sports extrêmes lui a donné des bases de comparaison, comme la mise sur l’angle de la moto avec la prise de quarts en ski, qui lui ont permis de s’appuyer sur des bases solides et de réussir son défi avec une certaine aisance.

Alors, pour le moment, je ne peux pas vous donner tous les noms, je garde encore ça secret, mais ils seront 8, soit 2 de plus que sur la dernière saison !

Votre émission a été reconduite pour une seconde saison, qui sera sous protection Furygan en 2018 ?

Le dernier, c’est Pascal Soetens, animateur culte de l’émission Pascal le grand frère. C’est un monstre en sport : 4e dan de Kung Fu Wushu, 5e au championnat du monde en 1996, amateur de crossfit… Ça ne rigole pas. Par contre, même s’il adore ça, il se fait vite peur à moto. Pour lui, il n’y avait que Rossi qui posait le genou. On lui demandait de gravir l’Everest, et il est parti du principe que c’était impossible. Du coup, de crispation, il s’épuisait sur la moto malgré sa condition physique. Alors il a mis du temps à y arriver, beaucoup de temps.

Doucement, progressivement, mais il n’a rien lâché. À un moment, je l’ai entendu crier dans notre intercom.

J’ai cru qu’il s’était bourré. Mais je l’ai vu sortir immédiatement de la piste, poser sa moto et se mettre à genoux en levant les bras au ciel. Sans jamais s’arrêter de crier. Il avait réussi !

Your show has been renewed for a second season. Who will be wearing Furygan protective gear in 2018?

Our final guest was Pascal Soetens, who is known in France for his iconic show ‘Pascal le grand frère’. He is one hell of a sportsman – a Kung Fu Wushu 4th degree black belt and 5th place winner in the 1996 world championship, a CrossFit aficionado ... he’s no lightweight. On the other hand, although he loves motorcycling, he got scared quite early on in the proceedings. He was under the impression that you can’t get your knee down unless you’re Rossi. It was like we were asking him to climb Mount Everest. He’d got it into his head that it was impossible. So he was really tense, and he wore himself out on the bike, despite being in top physical condition. So it took him time to get there – a lot of time. He took it slowly and progressively, but he refused to give up. At one point I heard him shout into our intercom. I thought he’d messed it up. But I saw him come straight off the track, lay down his bike, get down on his knees and lift his arms skywards, shouting the whole time. He’d done it!

Vincent Lagaf is not just a well-known TV presenter, he’s a big motorsports fan. He trained to be a diesel engine mechanic, and he’s done tons of motorsport-related stuff. He rides a quad bike, an off-road buggy and a motorbike, and he flies helicopters. Oddly enough, knee-down was the one thing he’d never done and was dying to do. But he was right in the middle of his flyboard instructor certification course – that’s his new thing. It’s a long and expensive process. He told me right off the bat: ‘If I think it’s getting dangerous, I’ll stop.’ He couldn’t afford to get injured. We took it nice and slow, he was very focused, and at the end of the day he did it easily.

Vincent Lagaf, avant d’être un grand animateur télé, c’est un amoureux des sports mécaniques. Il a un CAP de mécanicien dieseliste, et a fait plein de choses dans sa vie autour des sports méca. Il roule en quad, en buggy, en jet, en moto, il fait de l’hélico… Bizarrement, la seule chose qu’il n’avait jamais réussi à faire, et qui lui tenait à cœur, c’est de poser le genou. Mais il était en plein passage de son brevet d’État pour être moniteur de fly-board, sa nouvelle activité. Un processus long et coûteux. D’entrée de jeu, il m’a dit : « Si je sens que ça devient dangereux, j’arrête tout. » Il ne pouvait pas se permettre de se blesser. On a été très progressif, il était concentré, et finalement, ça s’est fait facilement.

Bruce Jouany, who currently presents Top Gear France, took a similar approach, but for a different reason.

He is a former car racer – single-seaters and LMP1 cars [Ed: Le Mans Prototype 1, thus named because they race the Le Mans 24 Hours]. He was our most laid-back guest – not scared at all. But he must have been worried about the technical aspect of body positioning and how it influences the bike’s stability. Bruce doesn’t actually have a motorcycle license. He knew about things like trajectories, speed and race circuits, but he was very focused on his position and getting it precisely right to continue with the challenge. And in fact it’s key to successfully getting your knee down.

Un autre a été un peu comme ça, c’est Bruce Jouanny. Mais pour d’autres raisons. Bruce, aujourd’hui animateur de Top Gear France, est un ancien pilote automobile. Il a fait de la monoplace, de la LMP1 (NDLR : les prototypes qui disputent les 24 Heures du Mans). C’était le plus détendu, aucune peur chez lui. Mais il a dû appréhender la technicité du placement du corps et son influence sur la stabilité de la machine. Il faut savoir que Bruce n’a même pas son permis ! Trajectoires, vitesse et circuits lui étaient familiers, mais il était extrêmement concentré sur sa position, à la décortiquer pour avancer. Une clé essentielle pour réussir ce défi, la preuve.

LA FRANCE PASSE ÀFRENCH LA VITESSE RACING MOVES INTO HIGH GEAR SUPÉRIEURE A

u début des 90’S, la Fédération Française de Motocyclisme, imitant l’Espagne et l’Italie, entend créer une filière d’apprentis champions capables d’intégrer un team officiel et de briller en Grands Prix. Quatre hommes sont à la manœuvre : Christian Le Liard (à l’initiative d’Objectif Grand Prix, ayant fait rouler Jean-Michel Bayle pour la première fois au GP de France 1992), Jean-Pierre Mougin, Jacques Bolle et Marc Fontan. À l’issue des tests, 2 pilotes sont titularisés : Régis Laconi, 17 ans, et Olivier Jacque, 19 ans, issus du championnat de France 125 National. Ancien champion du monde d’Endurance (1980) et 6e des GP 500 (1983), Marc Fontan est l’homme-orchestre de cette initiative ambitieuse dont le budget est de 3 250 000 francs, grâce à un club de sponsors. Furygan, impliqué depuis 1969 dans la vitesse, est bien entendu le partenaire enthousiaste de cette aventure tricolore, avec des cuirs taillés à la mesure de ce projet largement médiatisé. Pour la première saison 1993, le programme est chargé : 100 Miles de Daytona, championnat de France Open, championnat d’Europe et quelques épreuves en Espagne. Marc Fontan s’entoure d’une équipe technique de haut niveau, emmenée par Jean-Claude Besse, en charge des Honda 250 RS. Les pilotes bénéficient d’une formation très pro : pilotage, bien sûr, mais aussi testing, préparation physique, diététique, mentale… L’Equipe de France de vitesse démontre sa pertinence et l’histoire lui donne raison. Olivier Jacque devient champion du Monde 250 en 2000 avec Yamaha et Régis Laconi, après avoir remporté un GP 500 (1999), une épreuve de Superbike (2001), devient vice-champion du monde de Superbike en 2004 avec Ducati. Autres pilotes de notoriété ayant appris le métier dans l’Equipe de France vitesse Espoir : Sébastien Scarnato, Sébastien Gimbert, Julien Allemand, Matthieu Lagrive, Vincent Philippe, Julien Da Costa, Sylvain Guintoli, Guillaume Dietrich, Hugo Marchand, Alexis Masbou, Alan Techer…

n the early 1990s, the French Motorcycling Federation decided to emulate its Spanish and Itacoaches helped the young riders to improve their lian counterparts, who were training up gifted young riders to join Grand Prix racing teams technique and performance. Training included and get results.
