F

orte d’une expérience de 48 ans, Furygan est aujourd’hui une mécanique bien huilée, qui fonctionne à plein régime. Les exportations vont croissant et s’ouvrent à de nouveaux pays : l’Australie, l’Inde, le Mexique après les USA. We’ve lost count of the times we’ve received a set of racing leathers in shreds on a Monday – a sure sign that a rider has given his all in the race. When that happens, two thoughts cross our minds. One: our Racing Service has a lot of work in store. Two: We did a good job of protecting the rider, because it means he survived a crash without a scratch and got straight back on the bike.

Sylvain Barrier

Le défi américain En 2012, à 24 ans, Sylvain Barrier gagne la coupe du monde Superstock 1000 avec BMW Italie. Il récidive l’année suivante, toujours au guidon de la S1000RR HP4. Deux titres en deux saisons, c’est le bonheur. Mais les années se suivent et ne se ressemblent pas. Chute, accident de voiture, team et moto ne tenant pas leurs promesses… Sylvain connaît un passage difficile. Pour 2017, il se relance en mettant, comme l’a fait avant lui Valentin Debise (pilote Furygan), cap sur les USA et le championnat MotoAmerica. Il retrouve le guidon d’une BMW pour s’aligner sur les 10 courses du Superbike US. Une chute sévère à Road Atlanta, fin avril, met à mal ses ambitions. Pour autant, malgré la frustration, Sylvain va de l’avant, adopte une attitude positive, et termine les 4 dernières courses du championnat.

Ceci dans l’optique d’une saison 2018, toujours sur une BMW – pour appréhender au mieux un retour officiel de la marque en 2019, avec une nouvelle moto –, au cours de laquelle Sylvain espère être dans les starting-blocks afin de faire briller la firme bavaroise.

En espérant que la chance soit enfin de son côté, comme le sera Furygan.

Sylvain Barrier

The American challenge In 2012, at only 24, Sylvain Barrier won the Superstock 1000 World Cup with BMW Italy.

He won again the following year in the saddle of his S1000RR HP4. With two titles in two seasons, he was a happy camper. Then things started going downhill. What with a crash, a car accident, and a team and bike that didn’t live up to their promise, Sylvain was having a hard time of it. In 2017 he returned to the fray and followed in the footsteps of another Furygan rider, Valentin Debise, heading Stateside to compete in the MotoAmerica race series. He got back on a BMW to try his luck in the 10-race AMA Superbike. A bad crash at Road Atlanta in late April put paid to his ambitions. But despite his frustration, Sylvain stayed optimistic and finished the last four races of the championship with BMW. His goal is to enter the 2018 season on a BMW to leverage the brand’s official return to the series in 2019 and compete with a new bike. Sylvain aims to be among the leaders and score wins for the Bavarian firm. Let’s hope he’ll have luck on his side, alongside Furygan.

Barry Baltus

Faire d’un rêve une réalité

Barry Baltus n’a que 13 ans et déjà les idées claires : il veut devenir champion du monde de vitesse.

Depuis son plus jeune âge, baptisé “Barry” par un papa passionné en hommage au champion britannique Barry Sheene, le jeune Baltus vit au rythme de la moto. Non seulement il est doué, mais il travaille énormément, en roulant le plus souvent possible – le meilleur entraînement qui soit ! Il soigne aussi sa condition physique avec un préparateur, et son anglais afin de pouvoir échanger efficacement avec les mécaniciens du team finlandais Ajo Motorsport Academy dans lequel il redouble, après sa 3e place en 2016. En lice pour un podium en championnat Pré-Moto 3, Barry fait équipe avec deux jeunes talents : le Français Lorenzo Fellon (dont le papa, Laurent, est le manager de Johann Zarco) et l’Espagnol Adrian Fernandez. Se disputant sur 7 rounds, le championnat espagnol se termine à Jerez en octobre.

L’étape suivante mènera Barry en championnat CEV et il se dit prêt à tout pour parvenir à ses fins. L’espoir belge de la vitesse est en marche et il va bon train. Un pilote Furygan à garder à l‘œil.

Le Motion Lab, en plein cœur de notre usine de Nîmes. Derrière ces portes se trouvent les machines sur lesquelles nous éprouvons matières et technologies. Design, conception, innovation, le laboratoire interne de Furygan maîtrise l’intégralité du processus de développement. Déchirure, coupure, abrasion… ce sont plus de 1 500 matières et 15 000 coutures qui ont été testées pour faire avancer la protection des motards, faisant de Furygan un pionnier de l’homologation des vêtements de moto.

Barry Baltus

Turning dreams into reality Barry Baltus is only 13, but he already has his life plan all worked out: he wants to be the MotoGP world champion. His motorcycle-mad father named him Barry as a tribute to British champion Barry Sheene, and the youngster has lived and breathed motorcycling since he was a tiny tot. He’s got plenty of talent and he does a huge amount of training, spending as much time as he can on his bike – the best way to train. He also works out with a physical trainer, and is plugging away at his English so he can converse fluently with the mechanics of the Finnish team Ajo Motorsport Academy, where he is into his second year after scoring a third place in 2016.

Barry is in the running for a podium place in the PreMoto 3 championship, and he races with two equally talented teammates: France’s Lorenzo Fellon (whose father Laurent is Johann Zarco’s manager) and Spaniard Adrian Fernandez. The 7-round Spanish championship will wind up in Jerez this October. Barry will then move up into the CEV championship, and he swears he’ll do anything to reach his goal. Judging by his progress so far, Belgium could well have a future MotoGP champion in Barry. He’s a Furygan rider to watch out for.

Jayson Uribe

Jayson Uribe, 18, is competing for the second year running in the FIM CEV Repsol Moto2 European championship with the AGR team, riding a Kalex on which he finished 11th in the 2016 season. Like many American riders, Jayson practically grew up on a bike. He was riding a Honda 50 QR when he was only four. At seven, he switched to supermoto on a Kawasaki 85 KX, and at nine he started riding a Honda 125 RS. When he was 13, he moved to the U.K. with his mother and started competing in both the British Superbike Championship (scoring points 19 consecutive times in 125cc – a record) and the French Superbike Championship, becoming the first American to win a race (in Nogaro). Having joined Karlos Arguinano’s team AGR, Jayson has given himself three years to move up into the world championship. Jayson started up a business at the age of 17, and divides his time between riding and his other jobs as a journalist and electrician to fund his racing. His sheer drive and inspiring career path caught Furygan’s eye.

At Furygan, we handle leather with great precision, using 12 different hides to meet the variegated needs of our customers. For example, the kind of leather we use to make a racing suit isn’t the same as the one used for a vintage jacket. We optimize the best feature of each leather type, whether it’s suppleness, thickness, strength or colour. This process requires in-depth knowledge of both the material and how to work with it, not to mention an expert eye to source the finest hides from around the world. It’s a job for a connoisseur. The boss himself, David Segura, travels all over, from Italy to Argentina, like his father Monsieur Jacques before him, to track down the best hides (more than 20,000 per year) from which to craft our impeccable products. In all, the boss clocks up more than 30 flights and 150,000 km each year.

Born in the USA Jayson Uribe, 18 ans, est engagé, pour la deuxième année, en championnat d’Europe FIM CEV Repsol Moto2, au sein du team AGR, au guidon d’une Kalex, sur laquelle il a terminé 11e de la saison 2016. Intégré au team AGR de Karlos Arguinano, Jayson s’est donné 3 saisons pour frapper à la porte du mondial. Pour subvenir à ses besoins, Jayson a monté son entreprise à 17 ans et partage son temps entre son métier de pilote, celui de journaliste et même d’électricien, pour financer ses compétitions. Un bel exemple d’engagement et un parcours enthousiasmant qui ont séduit Furygan.

Serge Nuques

Serge Nuques is an outstanding rider. This French enduro and road rally champion is also a threetime winner of the Moto Tour rally in France, and once scored a podium place at a 24-hour race in the stocksport class. This rare versatility makes him one of the most talented riders of his generation. Serge is also known to be a prankster with a highly fertile imagination. He’s always up for any stunt, however far-fetched. For the third edition of the Mot&Art festival to be held in early September in Hossegor, he will be staging a competition with the high jumper Dominique Larié, also a French championship winner in his sport, and daring enough to attempt a full-twist somersault over a 600-kg bull. In the eye-catching teaser video for the event, shot in the bull fight arena of Soustons, Serge thunders down the arena in the saddle of his Yamaha 450 WRF gussied up with a 480 cylinder kit and a lowered suspension for quicker manoeuvrability, and Dominique somersaults gracefully over the bike. Furygan rider Serge has once again shown he’s a past master in the art of the perfectly orchestrated publicity stunt. Well done Sergei!

Serge Nuques est un pilote exceptionnel. Triple vainqueur du Moto Tour, tout en signant un podium sur une épreuve de 24 heures en Stocksport, il est capable de décrocher un titre de champion de France en enduro ou en rallye routier. Un éclectisme rare qui en fait l’un des riders les plus doué de sa génération. Serge se distingue également par son esprit facétieux, avec une imagination débordante, toujours prêt à relever un défi. Pour la 3e édition du festival Mot&Art se déroulant début septembre à Hossegor, il a mis en scène une confrontation avec Dominique Larié, sauteur landais, champion de France lui aussi, suffisamment audacieux pour réaliser un saut périlleux vrillé au-dessus d’un taureau de 600 kg. Au guidon de sa Yamaha 450 WRF kitée en 480 dont les suspensions sont rabaissées au maximum pour gagner en maniabilité, Serge a frôlé Dominique dans un ballet acrobatique au cœur des arènes de Soustons, pour réaliser un teaser de toute beauté. Dans cette danse improvisée, le pilote Furygan a, une fois encore, fait montre de sa dextérité, pour une opération de communication calibrée au millimètre.

Axel Maurin s’illustre en course depuis une quinzaine d’années. Il vient de décrocher son premier titre mondial, en championnat du monde d’Endurance, catégorie Superstock avec le team Yamaha Viltaïs Experiences.

Axel Maurin has been racing for the past fifteen years. He recently picked up his first WEC title (Superstock class) with the Yamaha Viltaïs Experiences team.

Questions pour un champion

Axel, ton parcours en quelques mots ?

Mon père, vice-champion Promosport 250 en 1986, m’a transmis le virus. Après quelques années sur des PW 50 et 80, j’ai débuté à 14 ans sur piste avec un Rieju 50 RS1 et enchaîné quelques saisons en 125 et 600 Promosport et Supersport, récoltant 4 places de vice-champion de France et une 11e place au Mondial 2010. En 2011, j’aborde l’Endurance et finis 6e de la Coupe FIM ; en 2013, je fais 3e, meilleur rookie et meilleur privé du championnat Superbike 1000 ; en 2015, je roule en CEV en Espagne avec une 8e place et j’intègre le team Yamaha Viltaïs Experiences. L’an passé, je suis revenu au Superbike, parallèlement au WEC. Tu es champion du monde WEC 2017 en Superstock.

Comment le vis-tu ?

Un titre mondial pour un pilote, c’est une belle récompense. Je la partage avec ma famille, tous mes partenaires. C’est une certaine forme d’aboutissement. À 28 ans, c’est la concrétisation de toutes ces saisons passées sur les circuits.

Going for Gold Axel, what’s your story?

My dad – who was Promosport 250 vice-champion in 1986 – got me hooked on riding. After a few years on PW 50 and 80 bikes, I did my first track race at 14 with a Rieju 50 RS1, and went on to compete for a few seasons in the 125 and 600 Promosport and Supersport championships.

I picked up 4 vice-champion titles in France and an 11th place in the 2010 world championship. In 2011, my first year in endurance racing, I placed 6th in the FIM Cup and in 2013 I was 3rd. I was named best rookie and best private rider of the Superbike 1000 championship. In 2015 I raced the CEV in Spain, finished 8th and joined the Yamaha Viltaïs Experiences team. Last year I returned to Superbike alongside the WEC. You’re the WEC 2017 world champion. How does that feel?

A world title is a fantastic reward for any rider, and a real accomplishment. My win is for my family and all my backers. I’m 28, and it feels like all those seasons I spent on racetracks have finally borne fruit.

Tu participes au développement du Michelin Power Slick Ultimate. La technique, c’est ton truc ?

Oui, cela fait partie de mon package, de mes points forts. La mise au point, le feeling, le retour d’informations, c’est quelque chose qui m’intéresse et dans lequel j’aime m’investir. Michelin me fait confiance, je pense que ce n’est pas dû au hasard. Lorsque l’on effectue des tests dans le cadre de courses Superbike, c’est parfois difficile, mais cela rajoute quelque chose à la course.

You’re helping to develop the Michelin Power Slick Ultimate. You’re keen on the technical side of things.

Yes, it’s part of my makeup, and one of my strong points. The tweaks, the feel, the feedback – I enjoy all that, and I like to get involved. Michelin trusts me, and there’s a reason for that. It can sometimes be tough to do testing as well as Superbike racing, but it does bring added value to the race.

Tu es très présent sur les réseaux sociaux. C’est devenu incontournable pour un pilote pro ?

J’y suis pour le plaisir de partager avec les gens qui me suivent depuis longtemps. Cela leur permet de vivre les choses de l’intérieur et d’échanger ensuite sur les paddocks. C’est également un bon vecteur de communication pour mes partenaires – dont Furygan, avec lequel je suis lié depuis 10 ans… une belle preuve de fidélité.

You’re very active on social media. Is that something a professional racer can no longer do without?

I’m on social media because I like sharing stuff with my longtime followers. It’s a way for them to take a peek behind the scenes and then exchange opinions in the paddocks. It’s also a good communication tool for my backers, including Furygan. I’ve had a tie-up with the company for the past 10 years – they’ve really stayed loyal to me.

3,000 km on a scooter Clémence Couten and Lisa Aleksenko are journalists, bloggers, photographers, directors and adventure-seekers with a road trip in a Renault 4L and a round-theworld tour to their credit. For the 2nd edition of Django Adventure, they hopped on the eponymous Peugeot 125cc scooter with neo-retro styling and set off from Paris, heading for Marrakech via Bordeaux, Granada, Rabat and Casablanca: a 3,000-km journey over 40 days. Le Lucky Cat Garage de Sébastien Lorentz et Laurence Chatokhine est un laboratoire d’idées, un think tank où l’esprit chemine et les délires mécaniques prennent forme…

Sébastien Lorentz and Laurence Chatokhine’s Lucky Cat Garage is an ideas lab – a think tank where the mind wanders at will to come up with crazy mechanical concepts.

Créer sans contrainte, pour le plaisir de façonner une machine puisant ses racines dans l’univers hot rod et animée d’un esprit racing, tel pourrait être le sens du Lucky Cat Garage. D’ici ne sortent que des bécanes qui respirent, qui poussent et sont capables d’affronter le chrono dans le cadre du Sultan of Sprint Challenge. La beauté pour la beauté, ce n’est pas suffisant. Il faut un prétexte, une histoire, une légitimité, pour que la magie opère. Sébastien Lorenz raconte des histoires, les mains dans la mécanique. Ses créations sont remarquables, avec une belle âme. C’est ce qui a séduit Furygan, qui l’accompagne dans sa démarche. « J’aime la culture racing de Furygan depuis 1969. C’est le lien qui nous unit. C’est une très belle marque, avec une légitimité, un savoir-faire que j’ai découvert en visitant l’usine de Nîmes », explique Sébastien. Laurence, sa compagne, est une fan absolue de Johann Zarco, au point de rouler avec les mêmes gants, les Fit-R, sur des runs où la performance se double d’une quête esthétique.

They cast a spell on Furygan, a Lucky Cat Garage backer. “I’ve been a fan of Furgyan’s racing culture since 1969,” says Sébastien. “That’s something we have in common. It’s a great brand, with genuine legitimacy and know-how that I discovered when I visited the Nîmes factory.” His partner Laurence is a huge fan of Johann Zarco, so much so that she rides wearing the same gloves he uses – the Fit-R, combining peerless performance and aesthetic appeal.

César, quelques mots sur ta Triumph 900 Thruxton ?

C’est un millésime 2007 que j’ai légèrement modifié, dépouillé surtout. J’ai supprimé les compteurs, remplacés par un plus petit, repeint le cuvelage de phare, changé le guidon, la selle a été revue, et le moteur respire mieux avec un filtre K&N et de nouveaux échappements. J’ai longtemps voulu aller plus loin dans les modifs, mais son utilisation quotidienne en aurait pâti.

Elle a un caractère bien à elle, je l’adore pour sa souplesse, sa fiabilité, sa sonorité et le plaisir qu’elle procure quand tu enroules.

Que recherches-tu dans la moto et son utilisation ?

J’ai toujours aimé les motos pour deux choses : le style et les sensations qui ne passent pas par la puissance ni les performances, mais par le sentiment de piloter une machine unique par ses qualités et ses faiblesses, qui te fait vivre la route à son rythme, lent ou rapide. J’aime tout ressentir sur la moto et sur la route : le vent, les bosses, les dénivelés, les appuis, la glisse.

Avec les années, tes goûts ont-ils évolué ?

Non, je crois que je suis toujours amoureux des mêmes choses : les motos simples, dépouillées et pures.

Quels sont tes pilotes référents ? Les motos qui t’ont fait rêver ?

Il y en a pas mal, Steve McQueen, Kenny Roberts, Max Biaggi, Jean-Michel Bayle, Stéphane Peterhansel, Jeremy McGrath, Doug Lampkin, mon père (rires), et pour ce qui est des motos, la Yamaha 250 WRZ, une Triumph Bonneville des années 60, une HVA 400 cross de 1971, une BMW 80 GS Paris-Dakar de 1983 et un vieux Shovel Harley.

Tu touches bien ta bille en mécanique. Tu aimerais restaurer ou te monter une moto ?

J’aimerais en faire plus, je bricole un peu, j’ai de gros progrès à faire, le temps ne nous permet pas de tout réaliser, malheureusement… Avec un très bon ami, on a remonté un Yamaha 500 SR façon bratstyle pour mon frère Léo, une super expérience.

La moto est une passion commune à ton père, Michel, et ton frère, Léo ?

Oui, avec mon père et mon frère, on a la chance de partager nos passions : moto, sport auto, ski et surtout cuisine ! L’éducation n’y est pas pour rien…

Tu roules fort en enduro avec ta Yam 250 WR et tu aimes tailler la route. Pourquoi ne pas mixer les deux et faire le choix d’un gros trail ?

J’ai commencé la moto par une Yamaha 50 PW, puis une 125 TT… et une 250 WRZ. Avec un père enduriste, je suis tombé dedans tout petit et, le permis en poche, j’ai fait beaucoup d’enduro – moins maintenant, faute de temps –, mais la passion est toujours là. Les gros trails actuels ont des performances et un confort qui semblent incroyables, mais je n’y trouve pas mon compte côté charme, caractère et esthétique, donc ça ne m’attire pas pour le moment.

Quel serait le voyage de tes rêves à moto ?

L’Amérique du Sud, sur les traces du Che, avec ma fiancée et des amis, et la traversée des USA avec mon père et mon frère.

Plus raisonnablement, tu as 2 jours pour t’évader. Quelle route prends-tu ?

Cap sur la Corse !

AN APPETITE FOR RIDING 12

Tu as déjà taquiné la piste. Dans quelles circonstances ?

J’ai récemment pris mon pied avec des potes sur le circuit de Barcelone. C’était une première avec une moto de piste, une Honda 600 CBR. C’était incroyable ! Je croyais savoir faire, que dalle ! On a passé un moment inoubliable entre amis et les sensations étaient au rendez-vous.

Côté fringues, c’est quoi ton style ?

Un casque jet parce que j’aime bien sentir les choses – même si j’avoue qu’un intégral est plus confortable et sécurisant –, une veste trois-quarts pour la coupe et l’aspect fonctionnel, avec les nombreuses poches qui me rappellent les vieilles vestes de tout-terrain. Pour les chaussures, montantes en cuir, mais je roule aussi en baskets.

Quelle est la recette du bonheur à moto ?

Rouler avec une machine que l’on aime et qui nous correspond, et peu importe laquelle, l’essentiel, c’est le plaisir que prend son pilote au guidon.

Heir to a culinary dynasty (the Troisgros family have been 3-star Michelin chefs for the past 49 years), César is one of the most talented and promising chefs of his generation. He’s a perfectionist, both out of necessity and for the sheer pleasure of getting things just right. He’s also a passionate motorcycle rider who likes to tinker with his bike when he’s not fine-tuning his recipes.

César, tell us about your Triumph Thruxton 900.

The bike’s a 2007 vintage. I’ve modified it – or rather stripped it down a little. I’ve swapped the twin instrument pods for a smaller one, repainted the headlight bowl, changed the handlebar and redone the seat, and the engine ‘breathes’ better now I’ve added a K&N filter and new exhaust pipes. I spent a long time wanting to do more mods, but it would’ve made the bike less practical for everyday use. My bike has a distinctive character. I love its flexible motor, dependability and exhaust note, and it’s a real pleasure to ride on long sweeping curves.

What do you get out of using a motorcycle?

There are two things I’ve always loved about any bike: the style and the feel of it. It’s not about power and performance; it’s just the feel of riding a machine with its own particular qualities and flaws and experiencing the road at your own pace, slow or fast. I like to feel everything when I’m out riding: the wind, the bumps, the way the road climbs and descends; the pushing down, the drifting. That’s when you really get away from it all.

Have your tastes changed over the years?

No, I think I’m still in love with the same kind of bike – simple, stripped-down and pure.

Who are the riders you look up to? Which machines do you fantasise about?

Quite a few people: Steve McQueen, Kenny Roberts, Max Biaggi, Jean-Michel Bayle, Stéphane Peterhansel, Jeremy McGrath, Doug Lampkin, my father [Laughs]. As for the bikes – the Yamaha 250 WRZ, a 1960s Triumph Bonneville, a 1971 HVA 400 Cross, a 1983 BMW R80 GS Paris Dakar and an old Harley Shovelhead.

You are a good mechanic. Would you like to restore a bike, or even build one?

I’d like to do more of it. I tinker with my bikes, but I still have a lot to learn. It’s hard to find time to do all the things I want to do, unfortunately. A very good friend of mine and I got together and did a Yamaha SR 500 Bratstyle rebuild for my brother Léo. That was a fantastic experience.

You share a passion for motorcycling with your father Michel and your brother Léo.

Yes, luckily all three of us share the same passions: motorcycling, car racing, skiing and above all cooking! So education does have its uses.

You do some pretty hard enduro riding on your Yamaha WR250, and you like to hit the open road. Why not combine the two and opt for a big trail bike?

I first started riding on a Yamaha 50 PW, then a 125 TT and then a 250 WRZ. My dad’s an enduro rider, so I got into it from a very early age. I did a lot of enduro riding once I had my licence.

I ride less these days because I don’t have much spare time, but the passion’s still there. The current crop of big trail bikes offers incredible performance and comfort, but I find them lacking in appeal, character and looks, so I’m not that attracted to them right now.

What’s your dream motorcycle trip?

South America, on the trail of Che Guevara, with my girlfriend and my pals, and a ride across the United States with my dad and my brother.

More prosaically, if you could only get away for two days, where would the road take you?

I’d head straight for Corsica!

You’ve already had a taste of the track. When was that?

I had a blast with a few friends recently on the Barcelona circuit. It was my first time on a race bike – a Honda 600 CBR. It was amazing. I thought I’d got it figured out: no way! My friends and I had an unforgettable time. We got a real buzz out of it. Definitely something to do again – and soon!

What gear do you wear?

An open-face helmet because I like to feel things, though I will say a full-face helmet is safer and more comfortable to wear. A three-quarter length jacket because I like the cut and because it’s practical – lots of pockets, which remind me of vintage all-terrain riding jackets. I wear high-ankle leather boots, but I also ride wearing sneakers.

What’s your recipe for an enjoyable ride?

Ride a bike you like, and that suits your style. Any make or model. The main thing is to have fun.

Au guidon de sa Kawasaki Ninja H2, notre mystérieux pilote essayeur maison (dont il se murmure qu’il aurait gagné des Grands Prix...) est en standby. Au loin, un vrombissement annonce l’arrivée de François Le Vot, ex-pilote de chasse de l’armée française reconverti à la voltige. Un autre top gun !

Le rendez-vous s’annonce explosif et le passage à très basse vitesse de l’oiseau vert de François donne le ton…

It’s early morning, and the 1,400-metre runway is deserted. Our mystery inhouse test rider (rumour has it he’s won Grand Prix races) waits patiently in the saddle of his Kawasaki Ninja H2. The throb of an aircraft engine announces the arrival of François Le Vot, a former French Air Force fighter pilot who now flies stunt planes. François executes a perilously low fly-by in his green bird.

It looks like this is going to be an explosive clash!

LE PREMIER RAPPORT QUI MONTE À

Ninja H2, le bombardier de la route

L’Edge, dans sa livrée vert Kawasaki est capable d’atteindre les 425 km/h, une performance qui ne déstabilise pas le “Stig” du staff Furygan. Et pour cause, la Kawasaki H2, dans sa version racing “R”, a récemment été chronométrée à la vitesse de 400 km/h (atteinte en 26 secondes), grâce à sa puissance de 310 chevaux. Une cavalerie portée à 326 chevaux en dynamique via l’apport de la prise d’air forcé du Ram-Air System. Plus modeste, la version street de notre pilote-essayeur (deux fois moins chère) délivre quand même 210 chevaux et tutoie les 300 km/h. Un véritable destroyer de la route, accusant 237 kg tous pleins faits. Pour faire parler la poudre, la Kawasaki 4-cylindres adopte un compresseur entraîné par chaîne Avec 4 500 heures de vol aux commandes d’Alpha Jet, Mirage et autres, François tournant à 130 000 tr/mn à plein régime et débitant 200 litres d’air maîtrise parfaitement l’art du pilotage acquis pendant vingt-quatre ans dans à la seconde. Passé la barre des 8 000 tr/mn, la Ninja crache son l’armée de l’air, y compris en tant que leader de l’équipe de voltige. Parmi ses venin et vous catapulte dans une autre dimension. Il faut sérieusenombreux faits d’armes figure une volée impressionnante de titres, dont trois de ment s’accrocher pour retenir le boulet de canon Kawasaki, dont la champion du monde (par équipe 2009 et 2013 et individuel 2013) ! Pour gagner roue avant monte au ciel à chaque coup de gaz. The green bird is an Edge 540 V3, manufactured in the U.S. by Zivko Aeronautics.

It’s a streamlined racing machine used for aerobatic competitions, especially the Red Bull Air Race where François is one of the two French contenders (Nicolas Ivanoff is the other). It has carbon-fibre wings, a structural composite propeller and a flat-6 Lycoming engine producing 340 bhp with a dry weight of 531 kg. The Edge is highly manoeuvrable, pulling up into a vertical orientation at high speed with very little effort, and can tolerate stresses of up to 10 times the force of gravity (10Gs). It’s undoubtedly the best way to take on the outstanding international pilots who compete in the Red Bull Air Race – 20-odd competitors in eight races, with two categories, the Challenger Cup and Master Class. The latter is the most advanced race, and the one in which François is competing for the third time.

Ninja H2: On-road bomber

This Edge painted Kawasaki green can reach a speed of 425 km/h, but Furygan’s test rider ‘Stig’ isn’t fazed. The ‘R’ (race-only) version of his Kawasaki H2 recently hit a top speed of 400 km/h (in 26 seconds), thanks to its 310 bhp power output, boosted to a whopping 326 bhp with the ram-air intake system. Our test rider’s street-legal version costs half the price, but still delivers 210 bhp and gets up to a speed in the region of 300 km/h. It’s the road equivalent of a jet fighter, weighing 237 kg with a full tank. To reach that insane speed, the 4-cylinder Kawasaki uses a supercharger driven directly by the engine via a belt drive, spinning at 130,000 rpm and pumping 200 litres of air per second. Rev it up to 8,000 rpm and the engine snarls back at you and catapults you into another dimension. Mindboggling technology François incessantly tweaks his plane to get the best from it in his quest for excellence (‘For an airplane to fly well, it must be beautiful’, Marcel Dassault, the founder of the eponymous aerospace company, once said). Kawasaki’s engineers followed that same philosophy with the H2. It uses the brand’s first ever single-sided swingarm, and has an F1 and Moto GP-style dogring transmission to facilitate smooth, precise shi ing, while also providing a quickshi er as standard (the first Kawaski to do so). A Racing Kayaba AOS.II fork – its first use on a road motorcycle – has been added to maintain stability when the bike goes into orbit, together with an Ă–hlins electronic steering damper that adjusts performance to the rider’s speed. Laurent Candillier knows the ins and outs of racing. After racing in the Promosport French Cup on a Yamaha 350 RDLC, he worked with several riders and teams – including the French MotoGP squad Tech3 – for a little over a decade. A perfectionist by nature, he was a French Air Force mechanic for 26 years, maintaining the hydraulics systems on legendary fighter aircraft like the Jaguar, the Mirage III and the Alfa Jet. So Furygan had no qualms entrusting him with the job of running our Racing Service: a veritable showcase for our expertise. A generous man who goes out of his way to help, Laurent is an enthusiastic and proactive multi-tasker.

Waterproof gear is a must-have to keep you safe, comfortable and dry when riding in autumn and winter. Forewarned is forearmed, as they say, so we asked the head of the Motion Lab – Furygan’s R&D division – to give us the low-down on waterproof clothing.

Bonjour ! Nous allons commencer par le plus simple : comment fonctionne un vêtement étanche ?

Ce n’est justement pas le plus simple ! Car ce n’est pas la coque extérieure du vêtement qui fait l’étanchéité, mais une membrane. Cette membrane est indépendante, elle « flotte » à l’intérieur du blouson, du gant, de la chaussure ou du pantalon. Entre la coque extérieure et la doublure de confort. Réalisée dans une matière extrêmement fine qui ne laisse pas passer l’eau, elle est conçue avec le minimum de coutures possible. Des coutures qui sont autant de trous qu’il faudra étanchéifier à l’aide d’une machine spéciale. Cette opération très technique, qui demande une grande minutie, de la concentration et prend beaucoup de temps, n’est réalisée chez Furygan que par une personne habilitée par typologie de vêtement. Lors de cette étape, on emprisonne dans ces coutures des liens, qui seront à leur tour insérés dans les coutures de la coque extérieure. Cela solidarise la membrane avec le reste du vêtement, qui devient étanche, sans avoir à la trouer directement pour cela.

Donc, la coque extérieure ne sert à rien contre la pluie ?

Eh bien non, car sur les vêtements Furygan, la coque extérieure est quand même traitée : ou déperlante ou étanche. Mais du fait des coutures et de certains accessoires qui peuvent être considérés comme des points faibles (comme les fermetures Éclair), il y a un risque de pénétration de l’eau. D’où la présence de la membrane, qui assure que l’utilisateur ne sera jamais mouillé. Ceci étant dit, la coque extérieure chez Furygan a aussi pour mission de ralentir la pénétration de l’eau, la prise de poids et l’arrivée de la sensation de froid. Elle joue un rôle important, en supplément de sa résistance à l’abrasion.

La logique est la même pour le cuir comme pour le textile ?

Dans l’absolu, oui. Chez Furygan, beaucoup de nos cuirs sont traités contre l’eau.

Cependant, tant qu’il n’y a pas de membrane, on ne peut pas dire que les vêtements sont étanches, toujours à cause des trous des coutures, ou des fermetures éclair. Cependant, nous avons beaucoup de remontées d’expérience de nos clients ou de nos testeurs qui sont surpris de la résistance à l’eau de leur cuir. Si l’eau met du temps à passer par les coutures ou les fermetures, c’est aussi un signe de la qualité de l’assemblage et des accessoires.

Existe-t-il différents types de membrane ?

Nous utilisons un grand nombre de membranes. Elles sont déjà différentes en fonction du vêtement que l’on étanchéifie. Dans un gant, elle sera plus fine, pour répondre à des contraintes ergonomiques liées au confort et au ressenti des commandes. Un point auquel nous prêtons la plus grande attention. Dans les chaussures, l’évacuation de la transpiration est capitale, mais la solidité aussi, d’où un autre choix de membrane. Sympatex, Second Skin, Polymesh... en fonction de l’usage du vêtement, nous recourons à la membrane idéale, sélectionnée ou développée par Furygan pour répondre à des besoins bien précis.

Comment entretenir mon vêtement étanche ?

Il faut se poser la question de comment le préserver. Comment faire en sorte que ses capacités d’étanchéité durent dans le temps. En évitant, par exemple, de mettre un produit étanche trop près d’une source de chaleur. Faire sécher sur un radiateur, sur un pot d’échappement ou contre un moteur occasionne des dommages à la membrane. Pour l’entretenir, il faudra le laver à la main, à l’eau froide. Ne pas le mettre en machine, car sur certains cycles la membrane risque d’être trop essorée, fragilisée, et de perdre ses capacités techniques. Même si les membranes Furygan sont robustes, on parle de matières dont l’épaisseur se mesure en microns, des millièmes de millimètre.

Peut-on améliorer l’étanchéité d’un vêtement ?

Pour Furygan, si un vêtement est étanche, il ne laisse pas passer l’eau. Difficile de faire mieux. Cependant, utiliser de temps à autre une bombe d’imperméabilisant peut aider une coque extérieure à conserver ses propriétés dans le temps… sans pour autant que ce soit indispensable. En revanche, il faut veiller à toujours bien mettre en place son vêtement pour qu’il soit le plus efficace possible : bien positionner la languette d’une chaussure, ses lacets, ou encore la manchette d’un gant. L’eau est une ennemie difficile à contenir, elle se faufile dans tous les espaces, et lorsqu’elle est rentrée, rien ne l’arrête. D’où l’importance d’acheter des équipements de qualité !

Let’s start with a simple question. How does a waterproof garment work?

Are there different kinds of membranes?

There’s nothing simple about it! It’s not the outer shell of the garment that makes it waterproof, but a membrane. Inside a jacket, glove, shoe or pant, there is a free-floating membrane between the outer shell and the comfort-enhancing inner liner. The membrane is made out of an extremely thin material that stops water seeping in, with sewing kept to a minimum. That’s because every stitch hole has to be sealed using a special machine to keep out moisture. It’s a very technical and time-consuming job involving highly meticulous work and intense concentration, and at Furygan there’s only one person qualified to do it for each garment type. During this stage, we embed little links inside the stitches, which are then inserted into the stitches on the outer shell. This process bonds the membrane to the construct of the garment, which becomes waterproof without having to make holes directly in it for the purpose.

We use a lot of different membranes here at Furygan, depending on the garment we’re waterproofing. A glove membrane has to be very thin, to enhance comfort and allow the rider to feel the controls. This is something we pay great attention to. For our shoes, we use another membrane because it has to be solid while allowing evaporated sweat to escape. Sympatex, Second Skin, Polymesh… we source membranes or design our own, depending on how the product will be used. We choose just the right membrane to meet very specific needs.

Are you saying the outer shell provides no protection from the rain?

No. The outer shell is treated with either a water repellent or a waterproof coating on all Furygan gear. But there’s always a risk of moisture seeping in through stitch holes and other vulnerable points, like zippers. That’s why we use the membrane to make sure the rider never gets wet. However, the outer shell of a Furygan garment is also designed to slow down moisture penetration, which weighs down the fabric, and the start of that cold, clammy feeling. So it does play a protective role, along with its abrasion resistance.

Do you use the same technique for both textile and leather jackets?

Basically, yes. Many Furygan leathers are given waterproofing treatment. But unless it has a membrane, a garment is never 100 per cent waterproof because of the stitch holes and zippers. Having said that, we’ve had a lot of feedback from customers and test riders who were surprised their leathers were so water resistant. If moisture takes a long time to seep through, it’s because of the high quality of the zippers, stitch holes and assembly process.

How do I care for my waterproof garment?

The real question is how to extend the life of your garment and keep its water-repellent properties intact over time. Make sure you don’t place your waterproofed product too close to a source of heat. Drying it on a radiator or draping it over an exhaust pipe or engine will damage the membrane. To clean your product, hand wash it in cold water. Don’t machine wash it, as some cycles will wring out too much water, weakening the membrane and reducing its technical abilities. Furygan’s membranes are pretty strong, but remember that the thickness of these materials is measured in microns.

Can you improve a garment’s waterproof properties?

Any Furygan garment described as ‘waterproof’ is one that doesn’t let any water in. It’s hard to improve on that! Using a waterproofing spray from time to time helps the outer shell retain its properties over time, but it’s not essential. On the other hand, you do have to store your product properly if you want it to stay effective. Make sure you place the shoe tongues, shoelaces or glove cuffs in the correct position. Water is a very sneaky enemy – it will leak into any little space, and once it’s got in you can’t stop it spreading. That’s why so it’s important to purchase top-quality gear!

THE SAMURAÏ WHO CONQUERED THE CONTINENTAL CIRCUS En 1974, Takazumi Katayama débarque en Europe pour disputer le championnat du monde de vitesse au guidon d’une Yamaha 250. D’emblée, il fait des étincelles ! En 1977, grâce à son pilotage incisif et son mental de guerrier, le pilote Furygan devient le premier Japonais à décrocher une couronne mondiale. Retour 40 ans en arrière…

In 1974, Takazumi Katayama travelled to Europe to compete in the world championship on a Yamaha 250. He cut a dash right from the start.

In 1977, the Furygan-sponsored racer’s laser-like precision and warrior mentality made him Japan’s very first Grand Prix world champion.

A look back at his heyday, 40 years ago.

C’est en tant que pilote-essayeur de l’usine Yamaha que Takazumi Katayama s’aligne, à mi-saison, sur le championnat du monde 1974. Son objectif est de valider en conditions réelles les futures compétition-clients de la marque. À 23 ans, il a déjà 5 saisons entre les pattes et 2 titres de champion du Japon au compteur (Junior en 1972 et Senior en 1973). Les débuts en Grands Prix de Takazumi sont spectaculaires. Après un abandon aux Pays-Bas sur casse mécanique, il signe son premier podium (3e) en Belgique, avec l’art et la manière, en décrochant la pole et le meilleur tour en course du circuit de Spa ! Et il remporte sa première course lors de la 3e épreuve en Suède ! Une trajectoire météorique ! Il enchaîne les bonnes performances, 5e en Finlande, 2e en Tchécoslovaquie… avant que Yamaha ne le rappelle au Japon sans même boucler la saison. Il aurait pu se battre pour un podium final, mais termine 4e de son premier Continental Circus très prometteur, dominé par Walter Villa (Harley-Davidson), devant Dieter Braun et Patrick Pons, sur Yamaha.

When Takazumi Katayama lined up on the grid halfway through the 1974 world championship season, it was as a Yamaha factory test rider. His goal was to test the brand’s future racing replicas in real-life conditions. At 23, he already had 5 racing seasons and 2 Japanese championship titles (Junior in 1972; Senior in 1973) under his belt. He made a stunning Grand Prix debut. After withdrawing from the Assen race because of a mechanical breakdown, he took his first podium – a 3rd place – in Belgium in great style, picking up pole and clocking the fastest lap on the Spa circuit. He went on to clinch his first victory at his third race of the season in Sweden: a meteoric rise! He continued to put in strong performances, placing 5th in Finland and 2nd in Czechoslovakia before Yamaha called him back to Japan, although the season wasn’t over. He could have competed for a spot at the top of the final standings. Instead, he finished a promising 4th in his first Continental Circus, dominated that year by Italian rider Walter Villa (Harley-Davidson), who came in ahead of Dieter Braun and Patrick Pons on Yamaha.

Les saisons se suivent et ne se ressemblent pas. En 1975, Takazumi est retenu par l’usine au Japon et pour rouler en Asie. Il profite de ce break pour s’adonner à son autre passion : la musique pop-rock. Guitariste de talent, il enregistrera plusieurs disques tout en trouvant toujours le temps de quelques accords le soir dans les paddocks. Du talent, Takazumi n’en manque pas. C’est également un mécanicien de haut niveau, un théoricien formé aux méthodes rigoureuses du service compétition Yamaha, comme celle de se laver les mains avant de remonter un moteur et de s’appuyer sur des données démontrées par les mathématiques (et non le pifomètre), avant de s’attaquer à des cylindres qu’il prépare lui-même, renfermant, bien sûr, quelques secrets… Et après chaque journée d’essais, Takazumi et son mécanicien démontent, auscultent, mesurent…

Takazumi had mixed fortunes over the next few seasons. In 1975, the factory kept him in Japan to ride in Asia. He used the time off racing to devote himself to another of his passions: pop-rock music. A talented guitarist, he recorded several albums, while still managing to find time to strum a few chords in the paddocks of an evening. Among his many talents, he was also a first-rate mechanic, trained to follow Yamaha’s exacting workshop standards. He would wash his hands before rebuilding an engine, proceeding on the basis of empirical evidence rather than instinct, then get down to work on the cylinders, which he prepared for himself.

At the end of each day of tests, Takazumi and his mechanic would get busy stripping down the engine, inspecting, measuring.

À l’issue d’une saison off en GP en 1975, Takazumi est sollicité par Chas Mortimer (autre pilote Furygan) pour devenir son équipier dans l’écurie Sarome, toujours sur des Yamaha, avec un statut de pilote officiel et non plus de test-rider employé par l’usine. Une belle année 1976 avec une victoire en Suède et 6 autres podiums qui lui permettent de se classer vice-champion du monde derrière l’impitoyable Italien Walter Villa (Harley-Davidson) qui décroche 7 victoires et signe le doublé avec la catégorie 350 dans laquelle Takazumi se hisse à la 7e place. « Kata », comme le surnomme le paddock est désormais sur la bonne piste pour la conquête du titre. Il aborde la saison 1977 avec 2 motos différentes pour la catégorie 350 : un bicylindre pour les circuits techniques et sinueux et un troiscylindres développé par Rudi Kurth, une Yamaha plus puissante, convenant mieux aux tracés rapides. C’est le bon choix. Grâce à 5 victoires, il devient champion du monde devant Tom Herron et Jon Ekerold, sur Yamaha. Des lauriers qui récompensent un engagement total. La signature de Katayama, c’est un pilotage très engagé, tranchant comme la lame d’un katana. « Dangereux ou kamikaze », selon certains détracteurs, une pression très forte sur ses rivaux, qu’il déborde à tout moment grâce à des trajectoires audacieuses. Il ne lâche jamais rien et fait preuve d’une pugnacité impressionnante. À mi-saison, victime d’une chute lors d’une course aux Pays-bas, il prend le départ du Grand Prix de Yougoslavie avec une clavicule cassée. Il serre les dents et fait mieux que tenter d’assurer quelques précieux points : il gagne le Grand Prix ! En 1977, Takazumi termine également 4e en catégorie 250, fort d’une victoire en Espagne, derrière Mario Lega (Morbidelli), Franco Uncini et Walter Villa (Harley-Davidson).

Fort de son titre 350, en 1978, Yamaha le fait monter en 500, une catégorie qu’il affectionne, comme la 750 avec laquelle il aimait rouler aux USA où les primes étaient plus importantes qu’en Europe. Il termine 5e de la saison (en remportant 2 GP) derrière le champion Kenny Roberts, Barry Sheene, Johnny Cecotto et Wil Hartog. Et ce, tout en poursuivant en 350, où il se classe vice-champion (là encore, avec 2 GP en poche) dans le sillage de Kork Ballington (Kawasaki). Une belle moisson. Puis c’est le passage chez Honda, le développement de la prestigieuse NR à 4-temps dotée de pistons ovales… un délire technologique qui ne s’avère pourtant pas compétitif en course.

After this hiatus from the GP in 1975, Chas Mortimer, another Furygan rider, asked Takazumi to join forces with him under the Team Sarome banner – riding for Yamaha, obviously, but as a privateer instead of a factory test rider. 1976 was a good year for Takazumi: he scored a win in Sweden and took another 6 podiums to finish as vice-champion behind the unstoppable Walter Villa, who picked up 7 wins and also triumphed in the 350cc category, where Takazumi placed 7th.

By now, ‘Taka’, as he was affectionately known in the paddock, was well placed to go after the title. He went into the 1977 season using two different bikes in the 350cc category: a twin-cylinder for the more technical and sinuous circuits, and a three-cylinder Yamaha developed by Rudi Kurth – a more powerful machine, better suited to the fast circuits. It was the right choice. He notched up 5 wins and became world champion, ahead of Tom Herron and Jon Ekerold on Yamaha. It was a reward for his unstinting commitment. Katayama’s trademark riding style was highly focused; sharp as a katana blade (‘dangerous’ or ‘kamikaze’, according to some detractors). He put huge pressure on his rivals, whom he would unexpectedly overtake with one of his bold passing moves. He was an extremely determined and combative rider.

Halfway through the season, Takazumi crashed while racing in Holland. He raced the Yugoslavian Grand Prix with a broken collarbone. Far from merely attempting to pick up a few precious points, he gritted his teeth, got on with it – and won that GP! He also raced the 250 class in 1977. Shored up by a win in Spain, he finished 4th, behind Mario Lega (Morbidelli) and Franco Uncini and Walter Villa (both on Harley-Davidsons).

After he had won the 350cc title, in 1978 Yamaha moved Takazumi up to the 500cc – a race class he took to with as much gusto as the 750cc, his category of choice in the U.S., where purses were larger than in Europe. He took 5th place in the standings after winning two GPs, behind that season’s champion Kenny Roberts and three other riders – Barry Sheene, Johnny Cecotto and Wil Hartog.

He also continued racing in the 350cc class, winning 2 GPs there too, and managing a runner-up finish behind Kork Ballington (Kawasaki). All in all, a good haul.

Then he moved to Honda, which had developed its prestigious four-stroke NR with oval pistons: a radical piece of technology that, however, turned out not to be competitive in racing.

Malgré de bons résultats obtenus à partir de 1982 avec le passage au 2-temps chez Honda (aux côtés notamment de Freddie Spencer), Takazumi ne retrouve plus la dynamique qui l’a hissé au titre mondial. En 1985, il se retire de la compétition (après 35 podiums en Grands Prix) en tant que pilote pour diriger un team, rouler au Dakar sur 4 roues, faire du business… sans jamais se départir de sa bonne humeur. Invité fin mai aux Coupes Moto Légende à Dijon grâce à la complicité de Jacques Bussillet, Kata a renfilé le cuir, à 66 ans – après une pause de 32 ans –, pour piloter une Yamaha 750 TZ de 1977. Un cuir Furygan, par fidélité à la marque de ses débuts, synonyme de succès et de ce fameux titre mondial inscrit dans les annales des Grands Prix.

Although he obtained good results from 1982 onwards on Honda two-strokes (notably as Freddie Spencer’s teammate), Takazumi never regained the impetus that had led him to the world title. In 1985 he retired from racing (after 35 Grand Prix podiums) to become a team manager, compete in the Dakar rally on four wheels and go into business – all of it with his unfailing good humour. Kata got back into his leathers at the age of 66 – after a 32-year break – to ride a 1977 Yamaha 750 TZ at the classic motorcycle event Coupes Moto Légende in Dijon in May 2017 as a guest of the well-known French journalist Jacques Bussillet.

He opted for a set of Furygan leathers, out of loyalty to the brand he wore as a rookie – a brand that reflects his success and the world title he won, which has since gone down in the annals of Grand Prix racing.

That’s why we wanted to spotlight the gear in such an evocative setting. It’s a challenge, because you have to light each garment so it stands out from the shadows. This shooting setup requires complex techniques.

But then overcoming obstacles is an intrinsic part of Furygan’s makeup.’

Jules, quelles sont les spécificités du Moto3 ?

Comment te prépares-tu physiquement ?

Qu’est-ce qui te sépare du podium ?

Nous roulons sur des motos 250 à 4-temps qui développent 58-60 ch à un régime maxi de 13 500 tr/mn et atteignant 250 km/h sur un circuit comme Phillip Island. Le poids mini autorisé est de 153 kg, pilote en tenue et moto comprise. Il y a des limitations pour éviter la course à l’armement : le prix d’un moteur ne peut excéder 12 000 € et leur nombre est limité à 6, l’ECU (Electronic Control Unit) est identique à toutes les motos, les pneus (17 par GP, 8 slicks avant et 9 slicks arrière, sauf en cas de pluie, où le nombre est illimité) sont fournis par Dunlop… La différence peut se faire au niveau des réglages de notre Honda : hauteur de l’avant, angle de chasse, empattement, hydraulique des suspensions… c’est le rôle des ingénieurs et je leur fais confiance à ce niveau.

Je m’entraîne 3 fois par semaine lors des séances de 90 minutes dans un centre spécialisé, à Barcelone, fréquenté par des sportifs de haut niveau qui se préparent pour les Jeux olympiques, et dans lequel il y a une section pour les pilotes de moto. Je travaille surtout le haut du corps, l’équilibre, la visualisation… Je fais aussi beaucoup de vélo et de course à pied pour un entraînement très complet. Pour rouler en Moto3, il faut être assez sec, et c’est mon cas puisque je pèse 63 kg pour 1,78 m, donc j’évite de prendre de la masse car le poids est l’ennemi de la performance. Au maximum, je m’autorise une variation de 2 kg. Depuis un an et demi, je travaille également sur la préparation mentale, pour la gestion du stress.

Je dois gagner en agressivité.

C’est une moto très légère, 83 kg à vide, il y a un gros phénomène d’aspiration. Il faut donc être placé au bon endroit, au bon moment. Et il faut trouver le compromis entre la vitesse de passage en virage et l’ouverture des gaz, d’autant que le couple est énorme.

Une YZF-R125 qui n’est pas très puissante, mais qui convient très bien aux pistes de kart. Je récupère chez Dunlop des pneus ayant été utilisés en Moto3, ainsi, je m’entraîne avec les mêmes gommes qu’en course. C’est une moto idéale pour travailler les positions, les déhanchés, le rythme, et qui ne coûte quasiment rien à l’usage. J’ai des pistes de référence sur lesquelles je fais des runs de 20 à 25 tours en essayant d’être le plus constant possible, à 2 ou 3 dixièmes près.

Et quel plaisir prend-on à piloter cette machine ?

C’est une moto très maniable et très légère, de ce fait, en virage, on passe plus vite que les MotoGP. Comment situer les Moto3 par rapport aux MotoGP ?

Sur un circuit comme le Sachsenring, les Moto3 prennent 6 secondes au tour, mais en ayant 4 fois moins de puissance.

En revanche, les Moto3 se distinguent dans les virages, où elles sont plus rapides.

On a circuit like Sachsenring, the lap times of the Moto3 bikes are 6 seconds slower, because they have 4 times less horsepower. But the Moto3 machines are quicker through corners.

The bike is light – it has a dry weight of 83 kg – and so slipstreaming plays a big role. That means you have to be in the right place at the right time. And you need to balance out your speed and the amount of throttle you give in a corner overtake, not least because the bike has massive torque.

Pour cette saison 2017, tu bénéficies du Racing Service Furygan. Un atout supplémentaire ?

Oui, c’est clair. Avoir une combinaison impeccable et bien séchée avant une séance est très agréable, on se sent immédiatement à son aise et cela permet de se concentrer pour être performant. À l’inverse, celui qui roule avec une combinaison encore humide peut mettre 2-3 tours à trouver parfaitement ses marques.

Les pilotes peuvent rouler en Moto3 jusqu’à 28 ans. Tu as 22 ans et tu en es à ta 4e saison. Comment vois-tu la suite de ta carrière ?

Vu mon gabarit, j’aimerais passer en Moto2, mais pourquoi pas rester en Moto3, si je trouve un team de pointe ?

Il faut trouver le juste milieu. Il ne faut pas être trop fou, mais faire preuve d’agressivité, tout en conservant une marge de sécurité, en gardant le contrôle. Lorsque l’on roule seul, on peut tester des choses, mais c’est difficile quand on se bagarre en groupe.

It’s very light and very manoeuvrable, so it’s quicker in corners than the MotoGP bikes.

Our 250cc four-stroke machines produce 58-60 bhp with a rev limit of 13,500 rpm, and reach speeds of up to 250 km/h on a circuit like Phillip Island. The minimum weight limit is 153 kg, including the bike and the rider in full kit. There are spending caps to avoid an arms race: engines cannot cost more than €12,000, and each team is only allowed 6 engines per season. All machines must use the spec ECU (Electronic Control Unit), and the tyres (17 per GP: 8 front slicks and 9 rear slicks) are supplied by Dunlop. All we can change on our Honda are the set-up variables: front ride height, rake angle, wheelbase, suspension damping and so on. That’s the job of our engineers, and I have total confidence in them.

As-tu des demandes particulières concernant ton équipement Furygan ?

I do 90-minute workouts thrice a week at a specialist facility in Barcelona used by top-level athletes in training for the Olympic Games, which has a motorcycle racers’ section.

I mainly do upper body workouts and balance training, and practice visualization. I also go cycling and running a lot to make sure my fitness programme is well-rounded. You need to have a lean physique to race in Moto3, like mine – I’m 5’8 and weigh 63 kg. So I’m careful to minimize fat gain, because weight is the enemy of performance. I don’t let my body weight fluctuate by more than 2 kg. I’ve also been doing mental preparation for the past year and a half to help me deal with stress.

What bike do you use for training?

A YZF-R125. It’s not very powerful, but it works just fine on a kart circuit. I get used Moto3 tyres from Dunlop so I can train with the exact same tyres I’ll be using in the race.

It’s the perfect bike on which to test body positions, lean angles and pace, and it costs practically nothing in terms of usage.

I have a few favourite tracks where I do 20 to 25-lap runs with a focus on being as consistent as possible, with only a two, three-tenths variation.

You’re naturally calm, collected and precise. Is that an advantage, or is it better to be a hothead if you want to lead the race?

You’ve got to find the right balance. You can’t be too crazy, but you have to be able to ride aggressively while holding on to that safety margin and staying in control. You can try out stuff when you’re riding solo, but that’s hard to do when you’re fighting in a group.

What’s keeping you from the podium?

I have to be more aggressive.

Any specific requests in terms of your Furygan gear?

A lightweight suit is important in Moto3, so the sponsor names are printed on the leather to shave off even more weight.

You’re making use of Furygan Racing Services in 2017.

Is that an added advantage?

Yes, absolutely. It’s a very pleasant feeling to get into a pristine and perfectly dried set of leathers before a race: you’re instantly at ease, so you can focus on your performance. Whereas if a rider’s wearing still-damp leathers, it could take him 2 or 3 laps to really get into his stride.

The upper age limit for Moto3 racers is 28. You’re 22, and you’re now into your fourth season. How do you see your career evolving?

Given my size, I’d like to move into Moto2. Then again, if I find a top-notch team, why not stay in Moto3?

resistance is serious business. Furygan protectors are tested at temperatures ranging from -20°C (after being taken out of a fridge) to 70°C. They also undergo humidity trials. Each Furygan D3O protector is placed on a grill inside a box with 1.5 litres of water at the bottom. Then it is put into an oven heated to 70°C to generate very high humidity for three days, and transferred to a waterproof bag 24 hours before being tested.

Celui que l’on considère comme l’un des 5 meilleurs pilotes de tous les temps, pionnier du motocross moderne, fut un formidable partenaire pour Furygan, mettant son expérience au service de la sécurité. Une démarche d’innovation et de collaboration que Furygan perpétue aujourd’hui encore avec, par exemple, Daniil Ivanov en Ice Race. Les acquis de chaque discipline forment le socle de données que Furygan utilise pour optimiser la performance de ses équipements. Joël Robert ayant noué un lien très fort avec Furygan, il offrit sa première moto, une 50 Italjet, à David, l’actuel boss de la marque. C’était il y a quarante-cinq ans. L’INNOVATION TOUT-TERRAIN GOING OFF-ROAD Dirt biking began to really take off in the early 1970s, and motocross riding was its most spectacular iteration. The ever-increasing number of riders, and subsequent need for motocross-specific safety gear, spurred Furygan (still spelt Fury Gant back then) to invest in this burgeoning market. Jacques Segura roped in a champion to design a full set of kit (boots, pants, gloves and a protector) – Belgian rider Joël Robert, who skilfully developed a product range, including a chest protector he himself wore when racing to deflect stones and debris. A motocross legend, Joël Robert racked up six world titles (in 1964, 1968 and 1969 with CZ, then in 1970, 1971 and 1972 with Suzuki) and was thrice world vice-champion (1965, 1966 and 1967). Besides his exceptional track record, and the effortless riding style that pulverized all his competitors, Robert championed motocross around the globe, from the US to Japan and Australia. Considered one of the top five riders of all time and a pioneer of modern motocross, he proved to be a valuable partner for Furygan, drawing on his own experience to come up with top-notch safety products. Furygan continues that innovative foray into tie-ups with riders to this day, e.g. with Ice Speedway racer Daniil Ivanov. The tips we pick up from each sport go into our knowledge base, and are then used to optimize our product performance. Joël Robert built up an enduring relationship with Furygan, and gifted our current boss David his very first bike: a 50cc Italjet. That was 45 years ago. Since that early tie-up with the era’s international motocross star, Furygan has signed up top French riders such as Jean-Claude Nowak and Michel Combes, who’ve picked up French championship titles wearing the panther brand’s chest protectors.
