ThestafoftheEmployment PlanfortheEcological Transition(PETE)ofthe FuerteventuraCouncilisworking onapilotprojecttoinvestigatethepotential useofseaweedascompostinagricultureand gardening.Todothis,almostatonofalgaehas beencollectedfromLosMolinosbeach,which isbeingprocessedatthePozoNegro ExperimentalFarm.Afterasandremoval, desaltinganddryingprocess,thealgaeare mixedwithplant remains,some pruninganda percentageofsoil. Allthis,isarigorous processthatgives risetoaveryrich compostthat improvesthe consistencyofthe soilandincreases waterretention.

Duringthefrst monthsofthe project,

sampleswerecollectedinElCotilloandCosta Calma,todeterminewhichspeciesreachthe Majoreracoasts.Itisimportanttopointout that,inthealgaecollectionprocess,the sedimentswereseparatedtobereturnedto thesameplaceandavoidimpactonthebeach. Likewise,intensedocumentationandsearch forscientifcinformationonthealgae compostingprocessanditsmostimportant parametershavebeenworkedon.Theproject alsofollowsonehundredpercenttheconcept ofcirculareconomy,usingrecycledorreused materialstocarryoutthiswork,whilealso providingemploymentforover40people.
