Anorthinlandvillagemid-waybetweenCorralejoandElCotillo, Lajaresisapopularplaceforsurferstostay.Thereisanarrayofsmall bars,bakers,shopsaswellasnumerousrestaurantsandsomelive music.Ayogaretreatcentreishereandthestartofthewalkuptothe volcanoCalderonstartsnearthevillage.

BurntMountain

About3kmSouthofTindayaistheBurntMountain,anancientvolcano whichhasastatueofDonMigueldeUnamunoonitsEasternslope. Thiswasawriterandphilosopherofthe20thcenturywhowasexiled toFuerteventura.Thestatueisabout8metreshighandcanbe accessedbyarockypath.InthecapitalofPuertodelRosariothereis amuseumdedicatedtothisillustriouswriter.

Tindaya

SetratadelpuebloalladodelamontañadeTindaya,ellugardelos primeroshabitantesdeFuerteventura,consideradocomomontaña sagradaporsuspropiedadesmagicas.Sepuedeencontraralrededor de300piesgrabadosensuspiedras,loscualesmidenentre17y34 centimetros,todosapuntandoalmismositio.Sedicequeenelpasado esteeraellugarparaadoraralasestrellasporlluviaparaloscampos. LosMolinosyTefa

ElPuertitodeLosMolinosesunpueblopesqueroenlacostaesta. Tindaya

ThisvillageisnexttotheMontanadeTindaya,aplacethattheoriginal inhabitantsofFuerteventuraconsideredtobeasacredmountainwith magicalproperties.Therearesome300mysteriousfootengravingson Tindayawhichmeasurebetween17-34cminlengthandallpointthe sameway.Inthepastitissaidthatthepeopleusedtogotothetop andworshipthestarsandprayforrainfortheircrops.Toaccessthe mountainyoumustrequestapermitfromtheEnvironmentMinistryof Fuerteventura’sCabildo.ThiscanbeobtainedinPuertodelRosario ofcesoratthemajor’sofceinCorralejo.

LosMolinosandTefa

PuertitodeLosMolinosisasmallfshingvillageontheWestcoastwith apopulationlessthantwenty,withmostofthepropertiesbeingused assecondholidayhomesforlocals.Ithastheonlyduckpondin FuerteventuraandquiteafewwildTurkeys.IntheWinteritisapebble beach,butintheSummerabrowncolouredbeachcanbeseen.There isaravinewhichisgreatforhikingwhichendsatthevillage,anideal placetosamplesomelocaltapas.Whentheseaislowthereisasea cavethatcanbevisited,butbecarefulastheseasinthisvillageare notoriousforstrongwaves.Furtherbackfromthevillageisadirttrack ontherightjustbeforethevillageofLasParcelaswhichleadstoa reservoirwithadam.Thiswasconstructedinthe1940’sfor agriculturalandlivestockuse.BackonthemainroadinTefathereis theEcomuseodelaAlcogida,amuseumthatdepictsthelifestyleof thelocalfarmers.Smallstonehousesarebuiltaroundforyoutovisit andviewthediferentcraftsmenatwork.Anaudiotourisavailablefor youtoenjoy.

Betancuria

Thisisasmalltown,formerlytheoldcapital,situatedinlandinthe Westernsideoftheisland.BetancuriaisnamedafterJeande Bethencourt,aNormanknight,whofoundedthetownin1404.Atthe timethelocationwaschosenforitssecludedinlandpositiontoofera betterdefenceagainsttheattackofpirates.Itremainedthecapital until1834anditisthesmallestmunicipalityonFuerteventura.Itis 21kmSouthwestofthecapitalnowPuertodelRosarioand2kmWest ofAntigua.Thetownhasmuchtosee,forexamplethechurchof SantaMaria,theArchaeologicalMusuem,CasaMuseodeBetancuria, theFranciscanconventandchurchofwhichonlytheoldchurchwalls remain,aswellasmanylocalproduceshopssellingcheeseandwine andnumeroustapasbars.Tothebackofthevillagethereisagoat farmyoucanvisitandseecheesemakingandmuchmore.Ontheway toBetancuriaenjoythescenicroadandtakealookattheviewpointof MorroVelosa.DesignedbyCesarManrique,afamouslocalartistand designerfromLanzarote,theUnescoBiospherereserveisanallround viewofruggedhillsandlandscapeswithaneleganthousewhich containsinformationaboutthegeologicalvolcanicpastoftheisland.

Antigua

Thisisoneoftheoldesttownsontheisland,andissituated geographicallyinthecentreofFuerteventura.Thechurchinthistown, knownas“ChurchofourLady”datesbacktothemidsixteenth century,withitsmostoutstandingfeaturebeingthealtarpiece dominatedbythesculptureofOurLadyandfankedbyStJohnthe BaptistandStJoseph.Thestonewalledentrancestandsoutaswell astheimpressivebelltowerontheright-handsideofthebuilding. WhileinAntigua,visitoneofthetraditionalbarsorrestaurantsinthe village,andsamplesomeauthenticSpanishcuisine.NearbytoAntigua istheMuseodelQuesoMajorero,aplacehavingcheesemaking displays,arestoredwindmillyoucanvisit,acactusgardenandlocal crafts.Itiswellworthavisitandisopenmostdays.Antiguaisthe hometotheAyuntamiento,thelocalcouncil,whichhasanimpressive buildingclosetotheplaza.

CaletadeFuste

Thiswasonceasmallfshingvillage,whichhasgrownintooneof Fuerteventura’smaintouristdestinations.Yearsagothebaywasused bypiratesasagatewaytotheisland,sothelocalsbuilttheTorrede CaletadeFusteasaprotectionagainstattacks.TheCastilloorcastle isatwo-storeytowerwhichcanbefoundneartotheport.OntheFV-2 roadattheNorthentrancetoCaletadeFustethereisasmall-scale replicaoftheCastillo.AlongthecoastneartotheAtlanticocentre thereisanexampleofakilnaswellasoriginalbuildings.Inthe pedestrianised areaoutsidetheHappyCentreatthebottomof resort,thereistheStatueofDonaFrasquita, whowasoneofthefrstresidentsof CaletadeFuste,whenthetownonlyhad herhouseasarestaurantformealsfor localfshermanortheoddvisitor.The originalrestaurantofFrasquitawas demolishedin2015tomakewayforthenew maritimewalkway.Thenewvenueisnowbythe beach.Theresortofersmanywatersports, swimmingwithsealionsattheport,boatexcursions andmuchmore,aswellasboastingtwo18-hole golfcourses.TakeawalkNorthalongthecoastal routeandvisitneighbouringCostadeAntigua withitsvarietyoflocalrestaurantsandbars.

LasSalinas
