Publisher Perspective

Welcome to the June issue of LKN Magazine! We’re thrilled to bring you our 10 TH ISSUE , and we hope you find it both informative and entertaining.

This month, I would like to dedicate our publication to three amazing fathers: my dad, who was a huge part of our lives and all our magazines; he would be so proud of his baby girl (we miss him so much), my stepdad, Charlie Schuler, who contributes as a writer, distributor, and supporter in so many ways; and finally, my husband, Tim, who is my everything and adores his kids and grand pups. This magazine would not be possible without his daily support, and I’m grateful for his willingness to help me chase this crazy dream of mine!

We’d like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in our TOUR DE BOUTIQUE on April 22nd. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since we made the decision to add LKN magazine to our family of publications, and what a year it has been! We have been overwhelmed by the support, and we’re grateful for each and every one of you.

The Tour de Boutique was a tremendous success, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our advertising partners and the enthusiasm of our shoppers. Your smiling faces and kind words were truly heartwarming, and we’re grateful for your ongoing support of our mission to promote local businesses and build a stronger community.

I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our social media director, MICHELLE HYATT . Michelle has been an integral part of our team from day one, and her contributions have been invaluable. Michelle, you’re a rock star, and we’re grateful for all that you do!

This month’s issue features a wide range of stories and features that highlight the people, places, and events that make our community so special. From profiles of local business owners to in-depth looks at our region’s history and culture, we hope that you’ll find something that speaks to you and inspires you to get involved in our community.

We always welcome your feedback and ideas for future issues. We’re committed to serving our readers and advertising partners. If you have a story idea or a suggestion, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Let’s make the most of this beautiful summer month and enjoy everything that lake life has to offer. So, get outside, soak up the sun, and have some fun!

Best,

DON’T RUIN THAT SALAD!

Spring and summer salads are a staple in my diet. Fall and winter salads are as well, but these warmer months tend to provide a bit more variety. Greens are part of my daily diet; in actuality, I eat greens at every meal and never get bored. Did you know that athletes need to consume a minimum of 5 cups of vegetables a day to aid in maximum health and performance?

Spinach, kale, arugula, cabbage, romaine…so many textures and so many flavors to play with. The creative side of me loves the blank canvas of my salad bowl. Grilled veggies, eggs, goat cheese, raw nuts, roasted veggies, fruits, toppings from Trader Joe’s, leftover sweet potatoes, beans… The options are endless!

But one thing I always do is make my own dressing.

This is one of those simple swaps that make a huge difference. Easy to do, also easy not to do; but if you make your own, you will never go back to bottled. Healthy tip for June: stay away from the bottled salad dressing. In fact, don’t even visit that isle in the grocery store. Spend your time on the perimeter of the store choosing whole, fresh foods and then make your own dressing. It is very easy to ruin a perfectly great salad by glopping on a bunch of processed dressing – making your “healthy” salad now closer to the fat and sodium content of a cheeseburger and fries!

3 tbsp balsamic vinegar

2 tbsp lemon juice

½ tsp raw honey

1 tsp Dijon mustard

3 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil

BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE

Juice of 1 full lemon

3 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Pinch of kosher salt & pepper

2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

LEMON VINAIGRETTE

Bottled dressings are filled with highly-processed ingredients and fillers. Many contain high fructose corn syrup (not good), added colors, hidden trans fats, and are extremely high in sodium.

And then there is the added SUGAR. It’s a killer but it keeps the consumer coming back because it “tastes good.” Look at the labels on your dressings in your fridge. One tsp contains 4 grams of sugar! So if your salad dressing serving is 2 tablespoons, you are getting at least 24 grams of added sugar on your “health salad.” Ladies, that’s almost your allowance for the entire day. And, that’s if you only use the serving size amount.

Making your own dressings is simple, delicious and easy to create variety so you do not get bored with the same flavors day after day.

SIMPLE SALAD DRESSING TIPS:

• Citrus (lemon, lime or fresh orange juice) adds a ton of flavor and little calories.

• Spring and summer are the seasons to grow your own herbs, which also add lots of flavor to any dish.

WHY US? WHY NOW?

With a multitude of choices available to investors in this modern day, why would someone hire Marzano Capital Group as their Registered Investment Advisor or their financial professional? I have been asked that question many times over the last 20 years. In reality, the question is a great open ended conversation starter and by the same token, a great way to introduce our firm. With the Lake Norman community in such close proximity and so many wonderful clients already in the area, I felt it a great question to pen down here in LKN magazine and then provide the answers to help give readers a good idea of who we are and what we stand for.

Our firm is a growing talent pool of exceptional thinkers, hard workers, and problem solvers. Our advisors and our support staff listen well, they act and communicate clearly and give extra effort every chance they get. We believe that the most unique character of our company that benefits the clients the most, is that we have built a culture that fosters a team approach. Team players can sometimes be less common in the financial advising world today, as this industry has a tendency to be ego driven.

Our team approach allows us to be more confident in our decision making, our servicing capabilities and allows us to lean on each other when the need arises so that the client experience is not compromised. There is a lot of truth to the old saying “it takes a village,” especially when you are solving for client needs and making sure that the client’s best interest is always put first. Due to our team approach, we have a built in succession plan that garners young talent, finds the strengths in each person and builds out the workload to fit the employee’s skillset—whether it is comprehensive planning face-to-face in one of our conference rooms, talking through the minutia of our financial lives, or in the front of the office where our support and operational staff are keeping the internal wheels turning for client service and appointments we have a great pool of talent everywhere you look in this company.

As advisors and team members of Marzano Capital Group, we want the LKN community to use us as a resource and call upon us when in need. Just like the lake and the neighboring communities are a destination for those who enjoy the water and all it has to offer, Marzano Capital Group is a destination for those who are looking for sound financial advice in a clear and concise manner. Have a great summer and stay safe!

THE BEAUTY SHOP: A BRIEF HISTORY OF HAIR

Maybe our mothers and grandmothers had the right idea. Going to the beauty shop once a week to get their hair done and then wrapping a scarf around their head to keep it nice for the rest of the week sounds a lot easier than washing your hair every day or so, blow drying, using the curling iron or flat iron...You know what I mean. I would pay good money to go in and be pampered, to sit under the hair dryer and have a beautiful “do” that lasts all week. Yes, Ma’am...buckle me in for a beehive! I’m ready to go back to the beauty shop.

The beauty shop as we know it, did not start out that way. Although the profession of hairdressing actually dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. A more modern version began in the late 1800s. Salons started advertising in a big way to get women out of their homes where most hairdressing had taken place up until that time. A self-made entrepreneur Martha Matilda Harper opened the first public salon called ‘The Harper Hair Parlor’ in 1888 in Rochester, NY using her life savings of $360. She invented the salon recliner chair and she started training schools, employing the trainees in her salon.

Between 1910 and 1920, salons and hair care companies in the United States were growing exponentially. At the same time, hundreds of never-seen-before products and hair accessories were hitting the market. In particular, there were things becoming available such as salon furniture, new adjustable chairs, mirrored styling stations and portable manicure tables. Bobby pins, the hair dryer, perms and hair color also became popular during this time. It was the age of Jazz, Coco Chanel, and short bobs. Many salons of this era refused to cut women’s hair, so they went to barbershops instead. The roaring 20s saw almost 25,000 hair salons open in the US.

The 1940s era brought about hairspray, relaxers, and other new styling products. Beauty shops became the go-to-place for women to escape from

their mundane lives to get pampered and indulge in gossip. It was around this time that military outposts opened beauty shops in order to boost the morale of their female employees. Both hair and makeup reached new levels of popularity in the 1950s, with red lipstick, heavy eye makeup and bouffant hairstyles coming into fashion. Beauty shops were bursting at the seams, and that business only increased in the 1960s.

The 1950s and 1960s woman went to the beauty shop for special facial treatments, aspiring to endorse a look of health and youth. An appointment at a hair salon for a shampoo and set was a weekly highlight for many women during the 1950s and '60s. Once husbands headed for their offices and children made their way to school, wives and mothers left their homes to spend an hour or more in the company of their regular stylists. They emerged with tidied-up versions of the same iconic hairstyle that all the best gals were wearing–the bouffant.

A TIMELINE OF BEAUTY:

• 1875 – The first curling iron is invented in France.

• 1890 – The first hairdressing academy is opened in Chicago.

• 1890 – The first electric hair dryer is invented.

• 1905 – The first permanent wave is invented using borax paste and electrically heated curlers. The first perms take 12 hours to complete and cost the client hundreds of dollars.

• 1907 – The first synthetic hair dye is invented.

• 1916 – Bobby pins are introduced to America.

• 1920 – The short bob is the most popular haircut.

• 1943 – The US Government creates the first aerosol hairspray during WWII.

• 1950 – Platinum blonde hair becomes very stylish thanks to Marilyn Monroe.

Beauty shops and salons increased in popularity in response to growing demands for professional treatments that women didn’t have to do themselves. With more women working, the beauty industry continued to develop into the bustling salon culture we have today.

“Inspiration is deeply personal and comes from what drives you.”

Everything about Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts delivers happiness and joy—in a variety of mediums—but always with the same spark of passion.

“We are driven by meaningful relationships—with both our artists and clients,” says gallery owner Jacqueline Bassett. “We’re inspired when customers tell us they are so delighted we’re here, or that we’re a great addition to the downtown Mooresville community. We are inspired by meeting new people, learning new things, and helping others.”

What started in 2016 within a multi-merchant store in Cornelius, expanded to online sales in 2020, and soon after, Jacqueline and Nelson realized foot traffic was essential to growth. Another important piece was having their own storefront, and this happened in June of 2022. A perfect location presented itself, and the gallery is now right next door to Epic Chop House, and across the street from John Franklin Moore Park. Jacqueline especially loves seeing the American Flag right outside their door. Jacqueline and Nelson have now also established friendships from all over the country, and many of their online customers have made it part of their vacation plans to visit downtown Mooresville, and shop Juelerye in person!

Being very relatable may be what sets Juelerye apart, while intentionally finding ways to impact and inspire their clientele.

“Many years ago, I had the opportunity to experience an exercise of developing my guiding philosophy,” explains Jacqueline. “Ultimately, mine was to live a life of gratitude, and inspire those I met along the way. We are simply in the business of connecting people and sharing stories!”

Jacqueline reminds us of the success of any business is leaving your own personal mark on every customer interaction.

“The only competitive edge you have is how you treat your customers!” she says. “When you lead with your heart, your customers will tell family and friends, and they will do everything to help you grow.”

Step into the gallery, and you’ll feel that inspiration immediately. The majority of what they offer is artist made.

“Artists remind us of our own potential,” says Jacqueline. “They encourage us, and build community right here. We have core artists who we represent, while continually adding new ones— both local, regional, national, and international artists.”

Jacqueline and Nelson also love showcasing emerging local artists such as Elijah Kell, an amazing young man who creates exquisite glass works, and who recently helped raise $20,000 for Dove House, a local non-profit. Artists and business partners become fast friends here.

“It’s pretty special to be part of Elijah’s life and career path,” shares Jacqueline. “We discovered him at the age of 15, and I knew I had found a remarkable person!”

Another aspect of that relatability quotient is impeccable customer service, and actually exceeding a customer’s expectations.

“We want to delight them by doing the little things—they matter!” says Jacqueline.

JUELERYE ARTISAN GALLERY & GIFTS 22 | lkn-magazine.com

One of her favorite lines in the store has always been Houston Llew Spiritiles—beautiful glass and copper art pieces, each with its own quote. Quite a few customers have become avid collectors, with many emotions attached.

“A few years ago, we received an order for one particular Spiritile—one featuring a cupcake. I called the customer to thank her and discovered she was gifting it to a friend who had recently lost her three-year-old grandson to cancer,” shares Jacqueline. “The last thing he had asked for was a cupcake. My husband always tears up when he tells the story! We have so many stories of how these art pieces have resonated with people, and Houston is a big supporter of small business. He doesn’t sell directly, but instead wants small businesses to not only survive, but thrive!”

Other favorite artists include Scott Slagerman, known for blown-glass and wood vases, while many customers have also commissioned Savannah-based Fine Jewelry Artist Kristen Baird to create special pieces for them (for Jacqueline, it’s all about the rings Kristen creates!) Hendersonville, NCbased artist Melinda Lawton is another shop favorite, for her one-of-a-kind earrings, as is artist Michael Hayes, from Spruce Pine, NC, where Jacqueline’s parents are from, who makes beautiful wall vases in stunning colors. Juelerye also added fine art when they opened the storefront, and will continue to bring in new artists. Many of these pieces are already delighting homes in the area, as well as out of state!

“We also recently added Hot Glass Alley, and I’m so inspired by the story of Jacob Pfeifer,” says Jacqueline. “He was diagnosed with a rare cancer at the age of five, and given a five percent chance to live. Now, he has his own glass blowing studio in Charlotte, and he says it’s important to spend your days doing what you love. We couldn’t agree more!”

FUN FACT: Inside Juelerye you’ll find a comfortable space in the middle of the gallery—think seating area for the men while their wives are shopping! Or vice versa—but you can read or relax in this incredibly soothing space.

Personal gifts or corporate gifts—there’s something special about giving and receiving a treasure made by individuals who have put their time and creativity into each piece.

“I’ve had the opportunity to sit with many of them and watch as they create the pieces that allow me to bring their happiness to you,” says Jacqueline, proudly!

Experience Juelerye for yourself, at 112 S. Main Street in Mooresville, 704-728-9880 or 704-728-0460, Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., but check their website often for extended summer hours! Visit them online at juelerye.com and on Facebook and Instagram @Juelerye.

WALKING TOWARDS BETTER FITNESS

Everybody knows that exercise improves our overall health, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we all need to become gym bros. There’s nothing wrong with focusing that hard on your physical health at a gym, but realistically not everybody has the time, energy or financial commitment for that lifestyle. Walking is an easy and free way to fit being healthy into your everyday routine.

Yes, walking has positive benefits to your physical health—but in what way? Walking can help with strengthening your muscles, improving your endurance for other types of physical activity, and reducing body fat. It also helps with increasing your energy levels and your cardiovascular health. Mentally, being outside and exposed to Vitamin D, as well as exercise, helps with your mood management, and if you walk with friends there are mental health benefits of spending time with loved ones as well.

So we all agree that walking is a great thing, but how can we fit it in our already jam packed schedules? Here are a few ways to sneak walking into your schedule:

#1 Take the stairs instead of the elevator at work. If you work in an actual office that has an elevator, start using the stairs instead. If going up them is too much, start with taking the stairs down and work your way up. If your office is on a double digit floor, start by getting off the elevator two floors down and finishing the rest on the stairs—and working your way up from there. This will eventually become a habit that you don’t have to think about

#2 If you work from home, set up your workspace furthest from where you take breaks. This forces you to go a little bit further when you need to grab water, coffee, or a snack during the work day. This is great both to keep your body moving, but also to give your brain a break by walking away from your computer for a few minutes.

#3 Hang up each article of clothing separately when doing laundry. When I do laundry I dump the entire load on my bed, and will then individually walk every item of hung up clothing to the closet as I put it away. It helps to stay active, as well as alert, while putting away laundry.

#4 Walk around your couch during commercial breaks. A top way to unwind and relax at the end of the day is to put on a TV show and sink into our couches. Granted many of us have streaming services without commercials— but if you do still have cable or the cheaper versions of certain streaming services (no shade here—they add up quick and a girl’s gotta save money somehow!), then do loops around your couch or your house while the commercials play.

Walk around the house when you’re on the phone. Some people are natural pacers and will do this automatically, but if you aren’t it only takes 21 days to set this into a habit. Anytime you make or take a call, stand up and start walking around your house. Take conference calls while walking around the neighborhood. Go up and down the stairs if the call is unpleasant to get out some nervous energy. Whatever works for you, it’ll surely rack up the steps quickly.

Set up walking meetings instead of in conference rooms if possible. If you have a walking trail near your work, or even sidewalks, start setting up 2 person touch base meetings that don’t involve equipment as walking meetings. This can help with the mood of the meeting as well, since getting sunshine during the day is always a happy occurrence.

The final tip to increase your walking is to start a step challenge of some sort with friends. Whether a challenge on your Apple Watch, Fitbit, or other exercise tracker—or even a basic pedometer and a text group chat. This extra motivation, especially if you’re competitive, or there is a prize to be won at the end of the challenge, will keep you moving when you’re feeling stuck.

A BOW OF Gallantry

When it comes to the South, summertime heat can seem nearly unbearable, but that doesn’t mean your style has to suffer. The world’s best fabric mills work diligently to continually develop the latest innovations in textiles. Whether it’s an ultralight cotton blend or a moisture-wicking performance cloth, the clothing we wear has come a long way in a short time. Even through all of these updates and improvements, nothing will keep you cooler on a hot day than tried-andtrue pure linen.

It may not have the softest hand or most luxurious feel initially, but don’t let that fool you; this cloth ages like a fine bourbon. Its wrinkled appearance irks the nerves of many, but the wrinkling is truly a function of the fabric: much like seersucker, it lifts the cloth off of the skin and creates “channels” for air to flow, keeping you cool and dry. It’s like wearing an air conditioner.

Keeping cool pertains to more than just temperature, though…summer is the perfect opportunity to showcase your mastery of sprezzatura, or a nonchalant, effortless style. It’s the art of subtle sophistication while giving the appearance of a relaxed, natural ease. A brightly colored linen shirt unbuttoned one or two lower than you normally may, untucked with the sleeves rolled up, shorts or pants comfortably loose through the legs, and white sneakers with a few scuffs on them are all perfect examples of sprezzatura. You know the look, you can pull it off, and trust me…your wife will love it.

Another upside to this particular look is that body shape isn’t overly important. Since the style calls for looser, easier fits, it’s flattering for most figures. I hear a lot of guys (especially with larger builds) say they want lighter fabrics because they’re hot-natured, but lighter isn’t always better. The lighter in weight a fabric is, the more clingy and susceptible to showing outlines it will be. You don’t need the build of a model to look like one- the drape of the garments will create a shape which works for you while the breathability will keep the temperature down.

There’s really just one rule here: under no circumstance should you wear an undershirt with linen. This not only defeats the purpose, but looks completely out of place, combating the aforementioned effortless style.

I hear a lot of objections to linen in the store, mostly that “it wrinkles so easily.” It does, but as I said before, that’s part of the function of the fabric itself. It’s expected and accepted with linen. This isn’t your dress shirt you’re wearing to work, needing proper pressing to look the part… this is your shirt to wear casually with the open collar and sleeves rolled up, out to dinner after a day on the water, or on any of your weekend adventures when the weather’s warm. If you haven’t tried linen before, give it a shot! Swing by the new Hampton’s location on Mooresville’s Main Street and try one on. As Steve McQueen demonstrates here, summertime has never felt so cool.

DOWN-TO-EARTH CLIENT CARE

At every stage of life, financial planning should be a personal priority. If you’re in your 20s, focus on the balance of savings and investing. Cruising into your 40s, aim to max out your retirement contributions, and by your 50s and 60s, continue to keep an eye on retirement and build an emergency fund for unexpected medical expenses. Saving for retirement at 60 looks incredibly different than it did in your 20s!

And, all along the way, the best investment you can make is a trusted financial advisor who keeps you focused on what’s appropriate for your age, while always maintaining your best interests. The amazing group of professionals at Marzano Capital Group has formed a personable, caring, respected team—ready to guide your financial path—no matter what your stage of life. Best of all, they promise you will feel like family!

MEET YOUR FINANCIAL DREAM TEAM

Current founding partner, JON MARZANO , and his dad, formed Marzano Capital Group in 2005, and he is proud to say much of their business has evolved over a client’s kitchen table, or a local restaurant meeting for lunch or coffee.

“Our partners and advisors take pride in getting to know our clients,” says Jon. “We are an organization built on relationships, community engagement, and connections. We let our clients know up-front that we operate as a team, period. It’s in everybody’s best interest!”

The Marzano group loves meeting with clients faceto-face, with a heartfelt mission for knowing their families and their goals. Communication plays a key role in every aspect of their business, and every transaction with a client is a collaborative effort.

“That’s what enables us to do our jobs to the best of our ability,” says Jon. “Any financial business should be built on trust. People don’t hand over their life savings to professionals they don’t trust to do right by them. We want people to know all about us, too!”

Jon has a few favorite quotes he feels sums up his business philosophy—and you’ll often hear these in his conversations with clients:

“If you learn early in life to live beneath your means, your chance of being financially secure in life goes up tremendously.”

“The earlier you start saving, the less you have to save.”

MARZANO CAPITAL GROUP

For MICHAEL MCGILVARY , becoming a partner at Marzano Capital Group was a natural progression. Jon was a huge encouragement for him as Michael often visited his mother—Partner and Branch Operations Manager, Angela McGilvary—at the office, and became intrigued with the field of investments at an early age.

“I learned very quickly this business isn’t all about numbers,” he says. “It’s really about relationships and trust. Nothing gives me as much satisfaction as helping individuals and families. You could say Marzano is in the relationship business, and investments are just the vehicle we use to get there!”

Michael’s goal is for all his clients to be educated investors. Common words of wisdom you might hear from him in conversation:

“In our opinion, the only way to keep pace with inflation is to invest in the companies that create it.”

doing all the right things by working hard, saving, and putting funds into an IRA, but they have no idea what their long-term plan is. I feel I’m teaching them the best practices to go from years of saving, to transitioning to the freedom of spending!” says Steven.

Here’s his favorite example: “There are 43 quintillion ways to solve a Rubik’s Cube. That makes the puzzle seem impossible to master, but a Rubik’s Cube can be solved in 20 moves. The process doesn’t have to be overwhelming— and that same process applies to money. I may have five different families come in who are the same on paper: same age, same assets, and they make the same amount of money. But they will have five different financial outcomes, based on values, goals, and circumstances. The most inspiring part of being a financial advisor is helping clients achieve their goals, and seeing the positive impact it has on their lives!”

His best advice is simple:

“I coach clients to have a new mindset: If you’re going to make it to 60 and have enough money—you need the right mindset in your 20s and 30s to arrive at a place of true financial freedom.”

As a partner at Marzano Capital Group, STEVEN GALLO has found his degree in psychology to be a valuable asset, enabling him to excel in his role as a financial advisor.

“With those skills, I’ve helped couples and families with many unique needs and goals, formulating investment plans that yield long-term benefits,” he explains. “I’m still using psychology to help dive deeply into personal thoughts about money—ideas that are often generational. I’m also able to help couples get on the same page with their financial decisions—which is crucial!”

Steven enjoys helping clients who need a financial “roadmap.” They may be

Always intrigued by the process of financial management, Financial Advisor BRANDON JAMES began transitioning from his career as a retail franchisee in 2017, and joined Northwestern Mutual as an advisor. In 2020, he joined the Marzano team after meeting Michael at a Chamber of Commerce meeting.

“I was intrigued by the opportunity to work in an independent environment,” he says. “It’s given me more flexibility to think outside the box and help the clients we serve.”

From his previous business experience, he finds it really interesting to be on the other side of the table.

“While I work with clients in all stages of life to meet their financial goals, I still have a soft spot for working with entrepreneurs and business owners, because I know their unique challenges firsthand.”

He also offers some words of wisdom!

“Don’t try to keep up with the neighbors! They might have a lavish lifestyle on the outside, but their bank accounts might be empty.”

“And yes, when you receive a raise, be sure to give your savings rate a raise as well! If you don’t, your lifestyle might outpace your savings.”

ANGELA MCGILVARY , Partner and Branch Operations Manager, and Alyssa Wells, Administrative Manager and marketing liaison, complete the “heart and soul” of the Marzano Capital Group. Both are proud of the team approach they count on as the best way to serve their clients!

“We have built our company on the basic fundamentals of providing both trust and personalized service,” says Angela. Both she and Alyssa

love that no day is the same around the office, and that they are afforded the opportunity to welcome clients and make them feel like family throughout every step of the financial process.

ALYSSA WELLS has been with the company for six-and-a-half years, while Angela has been with Marzano Capital for 24 years, and loves their status as an independent practice—working solely for their clients. That’s exactly how a true family unit feels!

THIS CURATOR OF MEN’S STYLE FINDS A NEW HOME IN DOWNTOWN MOORESVILLE

As Hampton’s prepares to launch its 10th year in business, the family owned and operated mainstay of men’s clothing is also excitedly embarking on new territory—the vibrant village of Main Street in Mooresville, to be exact.

“We’re excited for the relocation and look forward to joining the community of patrons and fellow businesses in downtown Mooresville!” says owner Tyler Hampton.

In 2014, the first version of Hampton’s opened right on Main Street in their hometown of Davidson, NC, and was owned by Tyler’s grandfather. In 2016, Tyler and his mom, Jan, realized a need for more space and a broader clientele, and they acknowledged a good quality men’s clothing store just didn’t exist between Charlotte and Winston-Salem, and definitely not in the Lake Norman area! So, Hampton’s made the move to join the Langtree Lake Norman shopping and dining village. Their passion kept them inspired, however, and with this recent move, they are returning to their “Main Street roots”—this time in Mooresville.

“I’ve designed a men’s clothing store where I would want to shop personally,” explains Tyler. “This new space downtown had actually been an apartment, complete with two floors. The upstairs will now be a custom clothing “suite”—really a large showroom of our custom clothing options—and will even include a stocked bar, for the entire experience!”

Downstairs will be upscale shopping at its finest, filled with the quality clothing and accessories Hampton’s is known for, including shoes, belts, neckwear, jewelry, dress shirts to polo shirts, casual yet stylish outerwear, and of course, classic suits and sport coats. Their selection includes the latest offerings from vendors around the world, and for a few of those elite lines, Hampton’s is their exclusive retailer in the United States.

“We really consider Hampton’s a destination shopping experience,” adds Tyler. “I believe what sets us apart is our distinguished level of product, presented with our extensive knowledge and passion for what we do. Many of our lines may be ones you’re not familiar with, but you’ll soon be sold on their quality and impeccable styling.”

Tyler also enjoys working and collaborating with other vendors who are family-owned—and is often now working with the second or third generation of a business. “We understand each other, and appreciate those family ties,” he adds. A very hands-on business owner, Tyler also personally selects which clothing lines become part of the Hampton’s shopping experience, as continuing to build that reputation behind the store name is still very much his passion!

While Hampton’s is grateful for its loyal customer base—which also crosses over generations— Tyler is also pleased to be in a new location where foot traffic will expand the store’s client base even more, and widen their already stylish audience.

Whether you’re in the market for sophisticated casual attire for your unique everyday lifestyle, or a distinguished, one-of-a-kind suit for a special occasion, the experts at Hampton’s can assist you with custom attire from tailoring houses throughout the U.S., Europe, and Canada. Every piece of clothing will be designed to your precise fit, with luxurious fabrics and impeccable attention to detail! They are the region’s exclusive source for Ravazzolo, Sartorio, Scabal, Scarpe Di Bianco, Alden, Emanuel Berg, Hagen, Paul & Shark, Peter Millar, and many other fine collections.

The exciting new home of Hampton’s is located at 138 N. Main Street, in Downtown Mooresville, 704-230-4458. Visit them online at hamptonsmens.com for a glimpse of new arrivals of classic men’s clothing, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram @hamptonsmens for updates and news of trunk shows coming this fall. Store hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

THE COMFORT OF A TRUSTED FRIEND…

Who Happens to be a Fabulous Chef!

Inspired by his years growing up around the Wilmington, NC area, and the years spent visiting Charleston, SC, when his dad, Bud, lived there, Jeff Lancaster had a definite vision in mind when he designed the architectural style and ambiance of Jeffrey’s Restaurant.

His business instincts also told him there was a niche for casual fine dining in the bustling Mooresville area—and besides amazing American cuisine, he knew exactly what would set Jeffrey’s Restaurant apart.

“Our service and staff are the heartbeat of Jeffrey’s,” he says. “No question!”

With so many people migrating to the Lake Norman area, Jeff knew he wanted to deliver the much sought-after quality experience of great food and great service. High ceilings and abundant light keep the mood bright and airy—you could definitely label it approachable southern charm!

“I want to feed people the way I like to be fed!” he adds.

“The value of an exceptional meal is really embraced today. At Jeffrey’s you get your money’s worth—plus our impeccable service and attention to every detail.”

The popular Mooresville spot recently celebrated its 18th anniversary—having opened on Valentine’s Day of 2005— and its success as a favorite gathering spot has gone beyond that initial inspiration and early expectations. The menu is timeless, not trendy, and there’s a tempting array of choices for every palate.

From shrimp and grits or fish and chips for seafood lovers, to the absolute finest filet, mouth-watering burgers, and a delicious blackened chicken pasta, the flavors and the presentation never disappoint—especially if you began your experience by sharing the house-made warm pimento cheese! The chef also selects weekly features for the menu, always keeping the choices fresh and interesting. While savoring a memorable lunch or dinner with family and friends, you can also toast the moment with a nice selection of beer, wine, and festive specialty cocktails.

JEFFREY’S RESTAURANT

During these beautiful summer weekends, bring a few friends to relax and enjoy live music on the covered patio! Be sure to follow their social media pages for artist updates. And now, you can happily choose Jeffrey’s for your family celebration, rehearsal dinner, or other special event, by renting Jeffrey’s upstairs space! There’s a banquet room that seats 60, and a comfortable mezzanine that seats 40 guests, and the entire space can be rented, or just one of the rooms if that suits your guest list. (Note: if your guest list includes guests with physical challenges, ask about renting one-half of the downstairs dining room, which is wheelchair-accessible.)

For private parties, Jeffrey’s can customize your menu with a plated meal (including three entrées you’ll select from the regular dinner menu), or a buffet combination that you’ll choose from the catering menu on their website.

Think of Jeffrey’s Restaurant as the best local destination to dine with family and friends, blending a mix of traditional southern cuisine and attentive service that will leave

PERFECT WINDOW TREATMENTS for Every Living Space

While you’ll find happy clients of Southern Custom Shutters all over the country, their factory is located in High Point, NC—also, appropriately, the furniture capital of the world!

Those local industry connections speak to the craftsmanship you can expect from this family owned company—and employees pride themselves on making first-class quality products for the end user—you!—a top priority.

“We’re a local company with products manufactured in High Point, and we’re just small enough to truly care about each individual job. Yet, we’re large enough to receive scaled benefits on pricing and labor—which improve the retail costs for our customers,” says owner Joseph Hooker.

There’s quite the family history behind Southern Custom Shutters, beginning in the 1980s when Joe’s mother had her own window treatments retail business based in King, NC. After college graduation Joe worked with his mom, and soon met one of her associates who sold plantation shutters. He began as a rep for this new company in 1990, and by 1997, Joe had founded Southern Custom Shutters. With family ties still going strong, Joe’s two sons work in the business: Tyler works in the High Point factory, and Garrett is the retail representative in the Cary, NC market.

As part of their impeccable customer service, Southern Custom Shutters also brings their showroom directly to you— literally. During your free consultation, one of their local factory representatives will show you available samples and take measurements right in your home, to assist you in choosing the perfect look for your space. They can also match a color or wood stain that’s already in place.

When you’re ready to launch your project, you’ll meet William Ward, the experienced factory expert dedicated to the Lake Norman and Charlotte area. All Southern Custom Shutters reps are trusted, knowledgeable professionals, with experience in both sales and installation—so they understand all facets of the world of window treatments.

From the most stylish plantation shutters, to window blinds (both wood and faux wood) and shades (including roller,

cellular, solar and motorized shades), even ultra-stylish porch shades that are perfect for your lake home, there’s a lot to love in the Southern Custom Shutters product line, and aesthetics isn’t the only end game!

“Our plantation shutters can adjust the lighting in a room— which is important for clients desiring a darker sleeping environment, and they can also offer privacy in those ‘necessary’ areas of your home,” Joe explains. Some customers rely on them to reduce cold drafts in winter and heat in summer—with many even seeing an improvement in energy costs for their home. Best of all, your new shutters will be guaranteed for life.

The company is proud of a product manufactured completely in the U.S., and all plantation shutters are made in-house at the High Point factory. Blinds and shades are typically sourced through Graber—one of the top national companies in the industry—and Southern Custom Shutters is authorized as a Graber Platinum Dealer.

Clients can also count on factory direct pricing—with no middle man and no inflated retail mark-up—and a turnkey installation process that’s simply a smart investment for your home. You’ll feel that family-owned warmth from your first phone call to the office, where Brooklyn and Erika will greet you with a friendly voice, and the assurance you’re talking to a local expert!

DO THIS, NOT THAT!

Now that I’ve shared some things that can help you get started, here are some additional handrails to guide you along the way.* Five suggestions of what to do and what not to do when schooling at home:

DO THIS!

1. MOVE ON IF YOUR CURRICULUM PLAN ISN’T WORKING FOR YOU. If you or your child continually get frustrated or stuck with what you are working with, try tweaking it a bit or STOP. Don’t stick with it just because you’ve already paid for it or planned around it. You can sell, consign or simply give it to another family for whom it may be a perfect fit. It’s more ‘expensive’ to continue to use something that isn’t benefiting your child.

2. INVOLVE YOUR KIDS IN THE DIRECTION OF THEIR EDUCATION WHENEVER POSSIBLE. When going to the library, encourage them to ask the librarian questions about where to find something. Time to move on to the next subject during a lesson? Ask them, should we work on math or spelling next? This helps them to give them a small sense of control of their learning experience.

3. SEEK OUT THE WISDOM OF OTHERS. Don’t worry if there is a topic that comes up that you don’t know a lot about. Take time to research it. Look for online tutorials or reach out to your local librarian. (Librarians are true heroes and can be one of your best resources!) If necessary, hire a tutor for a particular subject. Some families even trade off some topics. One parent may specialize in art while another has excellent skills in mathematics.

4. PLAN EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE HOME. Weekly music lessons at a music school, PE classes at your town’s rec center, or occasional field trips to a local museum or zoo can all be a part of the experience.

5. STAY UP TO DATE! Remember to update your records with the state to verify that you have administered their yearly exams.

NOT THAT!

1. GETTING EVERYONE’S APPROVAL: Don’t get discouraged by those that don’t agree with your decision to school your child at home. They likely don’t have all the information that you do about the process and may only be familiar with traditional means of education. It’s kind of you to offer to share more, but it’s ok to politely change the subject if it feels like the conversation is turning into a debate.

2. FEELING THAT YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE EVERY PLANNED ACTIVITY EVERY DAY. There will be challenging days where your kids just may not make a connection to what you are trying to go over with them. They (or YOU) may be tired, stressed, sick, etc. It happens to everyone, even in traditional school settings. Some lessons may take longer to complete. Life will throw you curveballs, too. Have patience, be flexible and go with the flow. Planning a little flex time in your schedule can help with this, too.

3. AIM FOR PERFECTION: Panic should not ensue if your house isn’t perfectly clean every day. Sadly, we can’t add time to our days, we just have to make the best use of the time we do have. If that means spending more of it reading together and less of it vacuuming, I’d say that’s an EXCELLENT use of time!

4. OVERSPENDING: You should not feel that you have to spend a small fortune on materials. You can get things at consignment stores (The Homeschool Room in Huntersville is a GREAT place to check out for this) or exchange items with other families. Again, the public libraries in our area are loaded with wonderful resources too! In addition, our family finds a lot of free downloads online. Simple google searches can be your personal valet for opportunities that can help you the most!

5. “COMPARISON IS THE DEATH OF JOY.” - Mark Twain This one is hard. I mean REALLY hard. But it’s also pretty important. Everyone wants to do right by their child and it is natural to want to compare techniques you are implementing and how your child is progressing vs others. We all want to feel that we are on track towards a common graduation endgame. However, constantly comparing yourself to other families whose journeys are totally different from yours would be adding undue stress to say the least. Not comparing your experience with others is probably one of the most common pieces of advice you will get from others who school at home.

MANAGED SERVICES FOR PEACE of MIND!

If you’re in the Mooresville area and needing a quick-fix for your home computer (Mac or PC), or more elaborate IT assistance for your business, you likely already know the professionals at CET Computer Magic are at the top of their game!

Opened in 2008, owner and Charlotte native, Tim Grier. knew the key to setting themselves apart in the market place would be offering the most trustworthy Managed Services in the area. They can formulate a savvy plan that meets both your computer and office needs, as well as your budget.

Here’s how Managed Services works!

Even keeping up with just constant updates and antivirus software can be daunting—and there are always more challenges popping up. Enter the powerful concept of Managed Services! There’s no question relying on experts will make your tech life a bit easier.

Managed Services is the process of contracting with IT professionals to handle all the tasks that bog you down—and those you may not even be aware of. You may simply need monitoring, managing antivirus software, on-demand remote support, planned on-site support, or something else! CET Computer Magic offers the finest, local Managed Services for businesses and home users, always backed by their skilled local technicians.

“We install our software on the devices you have covered with us, and that’s it!” explains Tim. “We monitor your devices on the back-end without you lifting a finger. All plans consist of remote monitoring and management, which means we monitor all statistics about your device, push patches/updates that are safe, handle any alerts about the computer’s health, and use end point detection and remediation to stop infections before they happen, and become major issues.”

If you’re concerned about ransomware detection, all of CET’s service plans include that under their managed antivirus protection. Any program or process that begins to encrypt any part of your computer will be detected, and from there, the staff will take appropriate action to eliminate it before it does any damage.

It’s also a common myth that Managed Services are only for businesses, Tim explains. “CET services

individuals and families who are looking to worry less about their home computers, and who want to be more protected against any threats.”

Another popular benefit of working with a local MSP company—a professional CET team member physically comes to your office or home, rather than only servicing your computers remotely.

In addition to Tim, the energetic staff includes Project Manager and Primary Service Technician, Julia Keyser, Office Manager and Lead Technician, Kim Annas, and Vantz Stockwell, Contracted IT Support Director for their Managed Services.

For home or business IT support around Lake Norman (Mooresville to Statesville, Sherrills Ford to Denver, Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson), visit CET Computer Magic for any and all of your computer needs! They are located at 224 Rolling Hill Road, Suite 5A, in Mooresville, 704-6631238. UGANDA: PART 1

THIS ALL STARTED WHEN

They decided they would take the money and go to UGANDA for a couple of years. Donna was very good at managing people and handling money and, among other things, Brent was a math teacher.

Just to give you a little background on Uganda, it is a landlocked country in Eastern Africa just west of Kenya. It has a huge body of water called Lake Victoria, all sorts of wild animals and National Parks. Because Uganda is on the equator, there are only two seasons in Uganda—the rainy and the dry. It was dry when we were there.

Recently, Uganda was ranked the second youngest country in the world because over 79% of the people were under 25 years of age. I believe this, because the life span when we were there was only 45 years. It’s also due to the many children that most women have.

Brent and Donna got themselves established; Brent teaching math and computers, and Donna running a microfinance non-profit, HOFOKAM. This was a large and spread-out operation that made very small loans—around $100 to $500 dollars. HOFOKAM loan officers would teach the borrowers how to run a business. They also formed them into borrower groups to facilitate peer pressure to ensure

repayment. The borrowers learned to hold meetings, write minutes, keep records, and make periodic scheduled payments. All this worked well—not without challenges though— and is still functioning today.

Donna and Brent’s travels to the many field offices led to the discovery that one of the primary staples of all meals was cassava. This is a starch made from the roots of a plant. The women had to pound and grind this many hours a day to have enough for meals. Brent & Donna worked with the community and figured if they had a diesel engine-powered grinding system they could save the women a lot of work. The women would also be freed up for more productive and creative work.

Together we formed a non-profit—Uplift Uganda—and raised enough money to buy and install the diesel engine and grinding system and got it installed. We were invited to come to Uganda and attend the grand opening.

After many vaccinations, we were in Uganda and at the grinding mill location in a very remote village. They made the final connections and powered up the mill. They ground more cassava in the first few minutes than they would normally do in a whole day!

Success in Uganda is always followed with a party. They definitely know how to party—they sing, dance, make speeches (lots of speeches) and share gifts. I walked away with an honorary King’s seat and a spear. I felt incredibly honored and humbled by these beautifully hand-crafted gifts from these people who had so little.

We also got to visit the school where Brent was teaching. It reminded me of the one room schoolhouse in the country. Brent & Donna and Uplift Uganda made sure that they had the materials they needed as well as computers. Their education system is very different from what we have in the States. The good news is that Brent and other teachers at the school were able to start a program to teach the students about computers.

We did get to meet the people in their homes, typically in one room with a thatch roof and mud walls, but they were neat and clean. Water, especially drinkable water, is a problem there, or lack of it. The natives must walk great distances to get the water, and then they usually have to boil it to make it safe to drink.

We also saw lions, giraffes, gorillas, monkeys, hippos and birds that build their nest upside down (Weaver birds). In addition to that, we took a boat trip up the Nile, which passes through Uganda, and saw unbelievable wildlife and amazing waterfalls.

I could look out at Lake Victoria, which is a huge lake, and wonder why you can’t swim or drink from the lake. I found out that it’s very dangerous due to pollution as well as crocodiles and hippos polluting the water,

MAKING THE ZIPPER MERGE WORK IN LAKE NORMAN

If you’ve driven in the Lake Norman area during rush hour, you’ve likely encountered a situation known as the “zipper merge.” This is when two lanes of traffic merge into one, and drivers are supposed to take turns merging, like the teeth of a zipper. However, this concept is often misunderstood or ignored by drivers, causing frustration, delays, and even accidents. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the zipper merge issues in the Lake Norman area and discuss ways to make it better.

One of the biggest problems with the zipper merge is that many drivers don’t understand how it works. They believe that merging early, before the merge point, is the polite and proper thing to do. However, this often creates a bottleneck and causes the other lane to come to a standstill. In contrast, the zipper merge is designed to keep both lanes moving as smoothly and efficiently as possible. By taking turns merging at the merge point, drivers can maintain a consistent speed and reduce backups.

Another issue is that some drivers see the zipper merge as an opportunity to cut in line and try to merge at the last minute, without waiting their turn. This can cause anger and resentment among other drivers and increase the risk of accidents. To prevent this, it’s essential to follow the “take turns merging” rule and be patient. If everyone cooperates and follows the zipper merge procedure, everyone will get to their destination faster and safer.

So, how can we make the zipper merge better in the Lake Norman area? One solution is

to educate drivers about the zipper merge and its benefits. This can be done through public awareness campaigns, road signs, and driver education programs. If more drivers understand the zipper merge and are willing to follow it, the traffic flow will be smoother and more efficient.

Another approach is to improve the road design to make the zipper merge easier and safer. This could involve adding more signs and markings to indicate the merge point, installing traffic lights or roundabouts to regulate traffic flow, or widening the road to create more space for merging. By making the zipper merge more visible and intuitive, drivers will be more likely to follow it correctly.

Finally, it’s important to enforce the zipper merge rules and penalize drivers who break them. This could involve issuing fines or demerit points for drivers who merge early, cut in line, or engage in other aggressive driving behaviors. By sending a clear message that the zipper merge is the correct and expected behavior, we can encourage more drivers to follow it.

The zipper merge is an essential traffic management technique, currently affecting us locally, that can reduce congestion, save time, and prevent accidents. However, it requires the cooperation and understanding of all drivers to be effective. By educating drivers, improving road design, and enforcing the rules, we can make the zipper merge better in the Lake Norman area and ensure that everyone gets to their destination safely and efficiently.

SPATCHCOCK CHICKEN

THIS ONE IS IN HONOR OF MY DAD — IT’S HIS FAVORITE DISH. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, DAD!

For this month, I wanted to share a recipe that is in the weekly rotation in our house...Spatchcock Chicken. This one is super easy—set it and forget it. Since I have started cutting out the backbone on whole chickens or spatchcocking it, I have not wanted to cook one any other way.

The spatchcock method allows for the bird to easily sit on the grill/smoker grates and results in a much quicker and even cook, by getting that nice crispy skin all on the outside while maintaining that juicy, flavorful inside.

Any kind of whole chicken from the grocery store works for this—you can get a whole chicken with giblets for like $7 at most grocery stores ($10 on the high end). You don’t need to buy the organic/smart $20 chicken…they all taste the same from my experience.

Once you get your chicken, place it on a cutting board with the breast side down and cut directly down the middle on both sides of the backbone with a very sharp knife or some kitchen shears. Next, once you have the backbone removed

(save it if you like making homemade chicken stock), scrape out any of the giblets, if there are any. Flip it over and press down on the middle area (breastbone) until you hear a pop, and it will flatten out a bit. Flip the chicken back over and season the bottom of the chicken with your preferred BBQ rub, I will talk more on seasonings in a minute.

Next up, is rubbing down the chicken with a binder—you can use something like olive oil, or just yellow mustard. Then, you’ll want to season it generously with a BBQ rub. My favorites for a whole chicken are Texas Pete dust (if you like spicy you will love this) and Meat Church Holy Cow (less spicy but very pepper heavy.) Any seasoning will work for this, so get creative. You want to let the seasoning sit on the chicken for at least 15 minutes—preferably 30 minutes in the fridge before cooking it...or better yet season it the night before you plan on cooking it for maximum flavor.

On to cooking! If you’ve read these articles before, I’m sure you can guess, I’ll be cooking this in either a pellet smoker or charcoal kamado grill/smoker. But this recipe works fine in the oven as well. The temperature I have found that cooks the most evenly and gets that perfect crispy skin is 300 degrees and depending on size, almost always takes 2 hours.

I usually do this in a pellet smoker, with a temperature probe inserted into the thickest part of the breast that will notify me when it has reached 160-165 internal. So after around 2 hours at 300, you can pull it off the cooker and let it rest for at least 10 minutes (up to 15) before carving it up! This is such an easy, set it and forget it, type of recipe that’s great for a weeknight when you want some good home cooked chicken.

In the late 1800s, the land was purchased by the Southern Railroad Company, who used the area to log timber for their railroad ties.

In the 1920s, the area was purchased by the Duke family, who used the land as a hunting retreat. In the 1950s, the family began to sell off parcels of the land, with much of it eventually being acquired by the state of North Carolina. In 1999, Gorges State Park was officially established, with the park opening to the public in 2000.

History of Linville Gorge

Many say the most beautiful gorge in America is right here in North Carolina. The breathtaking views of Linville Gorge are North Carolina’s pride and its natural wonder. The people who visit are greeted with trails and views that are unforgettable and that rival the beauty of any other attraction on the map.

Sometimes called the “Grand Canyon of North Carolina” or the “Grand Canyon of the Southeast,” the Linville Gorge is easily one of the most dramatic landmarks you will ever see. It’s a place to enjoy overwhelming vistas, to go backpacking and rock climbing, and to explore the noteworthy ecology. Whether you’re making a short visit to one of the famous overlooks along the rim, or you’re spending a few days exploring its depths, the Linville Gorge will be etched in your mind forever.

As one of only two wilderness gorges in the South, this area covers over 11,000 acres around the Linville River, making for a wide expanse of stunning natural beauty in any season. Anywhere you look is a new awe-inspiring scene. The river is approximately 1,400 feet below the ridge, making hiking in and out of the Gorge quite challenging, but enjoyable for those who like serious hiking. The plant and animal community are very diverse, with a dense hardwood/pine forest and a wide variety of smaller trees and other plants as well as bear, fox, raccoon, trout, grouse, wild turkey, vultures, owls, hawks, copperheads, and timber rattlesnakes.

HISTORY OF THE LINVILLE GORGE:

Before the European colonization of North America, almost all of western North Carolina was inhabited by tribes of the Cherokee Indians. In the Cherokee language, the Linville River is called Eesee-oh, which means “river of many cliffs”. Early white settlers named the river Linville in honor of John and William Linville, explorers who were scalped by the Shawnee while out hunting near the falls in 1766. A violent connection to such a dramatic, but also potentially dangerous place.

The steepness of the sides, the depth of the gorge, and the peaks of the Jonas Ridge to the east and Linville Mountain to the west made settlement of the area impractical to nearly impossible in the 1800s and 1900s. In the early 20th century, logging was a major industry in the surrounding region, but the gorge itself was spared. The prohibiting nature of the terrain made any major work endeavors there unprofitable, which is the main reason the gorge is one of few remaining examples of old growth forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains range. No industrial logging ever took place within the gorge, and its virgin forests span 10,000 acres. The gorge is also surprisingly free of manmade structures, and of the four major gorges in North Carolina, the Linville Gorge is the only one without a road in the bottom.

In 1952, formal protection of the area began when the land was purchased with funds donated by John D. Rockefeller. When the Wilderness Act was approved by Congress and signed into law by President Johnson in 1964, the Linville Gorge Wilderness became one of the first formally designated Wilderness areas of the new National Wilderness Preservation System.

EXPERIENCING THE LINVILLE GORGE:

Linville Falls is a very popular destination in the vicinity, with easy to moderate hiking trails and excellent views of the mighty gorge. Another well-traveled spot is Wiseman’s View, a vantage on the edges of Linville Mountain that provides a magnificent and well-traveled overview of the gorge.

The Linville Gorge Wilderness includes about 40 miles of trails, offering extensive opportunities for both day hiking and backpacking. It’s important to note that given the severe terrain, these routes can be challenging, but they provide the most immersive experience of this immense landscape.

A free camping permit is needed on weekends and holidays from May through October. Group size is limited to 10 people. Each visitor or group can request one weekend permit per month and may stay up to 3 consecutive days and 2 nights. To reserve a permit, call the Grandfather Ranger District office between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm at 828-652-2144.

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT

WE LIVE IN THE MOST CONNECTED, YET DISCONNECTED SOCIETY IN HISTORY.

How much do you love your smartphone? I hope not as much as a California man who married his phone in a Las Vegas wedding chapel during the summer of 2016!

Yes, he married his phone to make a point about how our phones have become the “other person” in our relationship. It sounds ridiculous to marry your phone, yet we cannot deny how our phones have infiltrated every aspect of our lives. The average smartphone owner will click, tap or swipe their phone 2,617 times daily. Some studies show that we pick up our phones every five and a half minutes, or roughly 160 times a day! While writing this article, my phone has been screaming for my attention. And yes, I gave in, picking it up over ten times—only 150 more pickups to go!

The smartphone, which is making us dumber, is a jealous lover. Think about this, all day long, your phone demands your attention through calls, texts, Instagram, Facebook, music, news, TikTok, YouTube, and games. It calls out to you, so we coddle it, we carry it around clasped in our hands or safely resting in a pocket. We place it right next to us at night, and it receives our first attention when we wake up. I am guilty of this. My alarm goes off, and I grab it, walk to the bathroom and check the weather, my Bible app., and text all before brushing my teeth.

We take our phones more places than we take our spouse and feed it —with our attention, robbing the relationships around us—of us. I often tell people our smartphone is like an adult pacifier—it soothes and lulls us to sleepwalk through life. We are becoming increasingly disconnected from the people begging for our attention on the other side of the screen.

For all the harmful and addictive qualities of our phones, there is some good when it comes to staying connected with your spouse, friends, and family. I often use it to send my wife a quick hello and tell her I’m thinking about her. And she responds with, “Love you too. Can you pick up some lettuce on the way home?” Super romantic! Our phones are a necessary evil and helpful often, yet we should control it, not it control us!

We have worked with many couples where smartphone usage and their spouse’s constant use have led to marital struggles and disconnection. We often hear how spouses feel they are competing for their spouse’s attention. We have lost our ability to connect we are victims of “phubbing” in our marriage.

I recently read that “phubbing” was originally coined by an Australian advertising agency and reflects a blend of the words “phone” and “snubbing.” When it comes to your marriage, phubbing means your spouse feels invisible or snubbed because you are distracted by a smartphone and not fully present. We all have done this when we pick our phone up at dinner to read a text, check the football score, or Instagram while on a date. I was “phubbing” my wife the other day as we watched a movie. While her head was on my lap, I checked Instagram and emails. I essentially am telling her, “My phone and what’s on it is more important than you.” At our recent marriage boot camp, a spouse described how their spouse’s excessive phone use has felt like they are having an affair. It has bred disconnection, inattentiveness, and a feeling of competing to be seen and heard.

For a marriage to thrive, it requires our full attention, especially

during moments of connection and communication. How can we stay connected with our spouse and those around us and grow relational connections? Below are a few ideas that we believe can help you disconnect to reconnect:

• PROTECT YOUR MEALTIME. Do not place the phone next to you. Instead, have a designated place your phones stay during your meal.

• GUARD YOUR CONVERSATIONS. When having a conversation or discussing an issue with your spouse, place phones face down and away from reach. We have seen couples accept calls and even respond to texts while we are counseling them. This tells the story of what is more important.

• ELIMINATE PHONES IN BED. No phones in the bedroom before bed. Remember how you used to connect and talk before bed- give it a try again.

• CELL PHONE FREE SUNDAY. It may not be Sunday, but pick a day to rest from your phone and all the distractions it provides. We do it every Sunday.

• POCKET OR PURSE IT. When on a date, put it away. Yes, you can check the babysitter’s text or take a cool selfie, but try to limit it. Be present.

• LOOK AROUND YOU. This one is for all of us. Next time you are at the market, waiting in a line, or anywhere people are standing around, look at what they are doing- staring at their phones. Don’t be a sheep put your phone away, look around you, and see what you have been missing. Connect.

The ideas above will help you find freedom from the not-sosmartphone which has come between your relationship. We desire to see your relationships and marriages thrive, so remaining connected in a world fighting for our attention is essential.

Remember, your marriage and the relationships around you deserve and need your time, attention, and simply to see your face.

NOW DISCONNECT SO YOU CAN RECONNECT!

Through the years, Amy and her team have perfected the finer points of a successful move—and they are sharing that wisdom here!

#1 Before you pack—anything—PURGE! Clean out those attics, garages, and closets, and de-clutter everything you don’t want to take to your new home. It makes a huge “mental” difference and also saves you tons of money on your move!

#2 Once you start packing, tackle the easiest and most unused rooms first. This creates a snowball effect and gets you on a roll! Remember to finish one room or area completely before moving onto the next, otherwise, that giant mess can be overwhelming.

#3 Licensed moving companies cannot transport flammable or dangerous materials and liquids. So gather all flammable liquids, open liquids, cleaning products, lightbulbs, ammunition, and gas containers, and prepare them for transport yourself. If you are unable to transport these to your new place, consider donating or discarding them appropriately. Also, drain all gas from mowers, weed-eaters, generators, etc.

#4

Pack it all! Or, if you don’t want to pack it, call American Moving and Hauling! Everything that can fit in a box must be packed. That includes items such as lamps, pictures, small appliances, electronics, speakers, small garage tools, and yard tools you may think are too awkward to fit in a box. But your movers can’t transport “loose” items for liability reasons. Yes, that includes clothing!

#5

Consider your furry friends! Make arrangements for your pets during the moving process. It’s best to board your animals if possible, but if not, please have them in crates, or confined to one area of the house. Having pets

out and about during the moving process creates an unsafe environment for both your pets and the movers. We want to keep everyone safe, and that includes your four-legged friends.

#6 Please try to keep all boxes under 75 pounds. Use smaller boxes for heavier items such as books, and larger boxes for lightweight items such as blankets, linens, and towels.

#7 Pack dishes, fine china, glasses, and other delicate décor in newsprint or bubble wrap, and in “dish packs” that are large, double-walled, and sturdy. Remember to mark these boxes fragile and label them with bold stickers!

#8 Please label all boxes so that we can place them in the correct rooms of your new home.

#9

It’s important to put anything you don’t want the movers to pack in one specific area of the house, then let your crew leader and other movers know not to transport these items. (Labeling is also helpful to avoid any mix-ups!)

#10

When gathering and comparing moving quotes, look at each estimate carefully. Make sure they are offering the same services, that everything is included on each estimate, that each company is licensed, insured, and has a good reputation. “There are lots of rogue movers out here with little experience and no insurance coverage!” says Amy. “Please do your due diligence to make sure you and your family are protected!”

It’s clear Amy and her team love helping people, the personal satisfaction of a job well done, and seeing happy customers!

YOGA BENEFITS YOUR MIND, BODY AND SOUL

YOGA HAS BEEN PRACTICED FOR MORE THAN 5,000 YEARS. IT IS A SCIENCE THAT CONSISTS OF OBSERVATIONS, PRINCIPLES, AND THEORIES REGARDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MIND, BODY, AND SOUL.

The practice of yoga involves stretching the body and forming different poses while keeping your breath slow and controlled. This helps the body become both relaxed and energized at the same time. Yoga can be physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging but you don’t already need to be flexible or in good shape to practice it.

Yoga is more than just a form of exercise. It has a number of benefits for your mind, body, and soul as indicated below:

BENEFITS FOR YOUR MIND

Any kind of physical activity contributes to relieving stress and anxiety, but this is particularly true with yoga. Due to yoga’s quiet and precise movements, it can help to pull your focus away from busy daily responsibilities and toward a calmer state by moving your body through sets of poses with balance and concentration. It forces you to focus your attention more on the present moment, slowing down your racing mind and increasing the ability to manage your stressors and emotions more effectively.

BENEFITS FOR YOUR BODY

Yoga will help you become more aware of your body’s patterns of movement, posture, and alignment resulting in increased flexibility and fitness level. It also helps you to become more flexible by using a greater range of motion of your muscles and joints. This releases lactic acid build-up that causes stiffness, tension, and fatigue. Yoga also helps to build muscle tone and strength. In addition, it has also been tied to other physical benefits such as lower blood pressure, better sleep, and improved mobility and balance.

BENEFITS FOR YOUR SOUL

Yoga helps you to cultivate gratitude in your life and appreciate what you have. Moving your body while counting your blessings will help clear mental, physical, and emotional blockages that may be holding you back. Further, yoga cultivates mindfulness and self-awareness, creating inner peace that helps you to be more resilient in handling life’s challenges.

There are many different styles of yoga which include Hatha, vinyasa, ashtanga, and hot yoga such as Bikram. But if you’re new to the practice, a Hatha class may be a good start, since it’s gentle and teaches you basic poses that are the foundation for other types of yoga.

Interested in getting started with yoga but not sure what to do? Going to beginner’s classes at a yoga studio or working one-on-one with a yoga instructor are ideal methods of getting started. But there are also a number of online options available. You could start with a simple online search like “yoga for beginners,” This will introduce you to lots of different options, some just a few minutes long and others as long as an hour. As with any new exercise program, you may want to check with your doctor before you begin.

In conclusion, yoga can be extremely beneficial and can help elevate the well-being of your mind, body, and soul. If you aren’t currently practicing yoga, it is certainly something to consider!

TANGIBLE SUPPORT

It was the week between Christmas and New Year’s – my birthday, as well. My husband was hospitalized with mysterious neurological complications from COVID, and, just to add to the mix, my heat was out.

What can I do to help?

I’m okay, really. No, seriously, I want to help. Well, keep me and my guy in your prayers. Of course, but I want at least one TANGIBLE way to help.

I learned a lot from my dear, wise friend, “SH” that day. She made me realize that while so many of us genuinely care, we often don’t know how best to extend and deliver on that care in tangible ways.

In the days that followed, I leaned into SH’s offer to do things for me, tangibly. One late December night, she drove around looking for my Paxlovid prescription as it had been sent to the wrong pharmacy. A few days later, she dropped off a care package of classic comfort foods complete with tea bags and chicken soup.

What else do you need?

Nothing. You are an angel. Okay, so what errand can I run for you?

SH was persistent and I appreciated her steadfast moxie aimed at supporting me through this rough patch.

Well, actually, there is something, but it would take you out of your way and be a complete pain. I had these cushions made before all of this happened and they need to be picked up. On it!

Many of us espouse genuinely-held values rooted in our families of origin and our belief systems, but struggle with how to live them consistently and with, well, steadfastness. Not SH.

When a loved one, friend or neighbor is struggling with grief, loss, illness, isolation, or a personal boatload of life troubles, we can complement our prayers for them by learning how to extend help in a way that works.

TIPS FOR OFFERING TANGIBLE HELP. Of course, “help” is not one size fits all, and it is only helpful if it is something that succeeds in lightening the other person’s load. So...

CONSIDER WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT FRIEND WHO IS “GOING THROUGH SOMETHING.” SH knew that I couldn’t leave the house and – as you may have noticed - acted on that key bit of knowledge. You can ask specific and targeted questions such as:

I am running to Costco on Tuesday. What can I pick up for you? What day does your trash guy come? I’ll put out your barrel for you.

THESE QUESTIONS ARE FAR MORE EFFECTIVE THAN ASKING: Need anything at the store? Do you want me to put out your trash barrel for you?

As these are more likely to elicit a “No, I’m fine” response. MAKE IT HARD FOR THEM TO SAY NO. We’ve all been through rough times. That’s something you can use to make it easier for your friend in need to accept your help. You can say:

It was really hard to stay on top of things when Joey was so ill. I don’t know what I would have done without a little help here and there. What specific thing can I do that would lighten your load a bit right now?

BE A LITTLE PRESUMPTUOUS. Another friend, “HC,” texted this to me when I was well enough to visit my husband in the hospital every day for two weeks:

So sad you are going through this. I have your key, so what day can I come by the vacuum or do some laundry?

IF ALL OF THIS SOUNDS A LITTLE “BOLD” FOR YOU, KEEP THESE IDEAS IN MIND:

• Helping others is clinically proven to help you. It goes both ways.

• Espousing your values is one thing. The much greater reward lies in living them.

• That person on the receiving end will never forget the love and kindness expressed in deeds, not words.

Exciting things are happening at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, as the congregation recently welcomed their new Senior Pastor, the Reverend Aaron C. Moore, and his family.

A graduate of Garinger High School in Charlotte, Aaron met his wife of 23 years, Sarah, at Gardner-Webb University. The couple and their four children have relocated to the Lake Norman area from Marietta, Georgia, and they couldn’t be more thankful.

environment for them to grow in their faith. Susan Kittle (Children’s Director) and Sean Niner (Youth Director) are both powerhouses of faith, and I can’t thank God enough for their encouragement along the way.”

Aaron also studied music composition at Gardner-Webb and developed his ministry in nearby Shelby, NC. After graduation, he was called into full-time ministry in Boca Raton, FL, to serve with Grace Community Church. There he served as Director of Music and Adult Equipping Ministries, and continued his educational journey at Knox Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Divinity degree.

As we all know, music is such an integral part of the Christian faith, and Aaron shares that his life has been brimming with church music from day one!

“There’s usually a pressure with new beginnings to put your best foot forward—and the feeling can be like a middle school dance, not knowing exactly what to say or do,” explains Aaron. “What I got instead was a beautiful community of people who love Jesus and were ready with arms wide open for a fresh new start. Some joined us to unload boxes on moving day, others sent dinner and cakes. This welcome is everything a pastor could hope for in a new church, and my family is blessed to be part of Bethel!”

The Moore family made Bethel Presbyterian their official church home last February, and Aaron delivered his first sermon— appropriately—on Ash Wednesday. He shares the enormous life blessing of being “back home,” as after his installation service he and Sarah were able to serve lunch for a large group of friends and relatives—some of whom they hadn’t seen for over six years.

“You see it over and over in the Scriptures in the Psalms and Kings, and even in the New Testament, that music is a great way for disciples of Jesus to memorize Scripture,” he explains. “Theologian Karl Barth was once asked to summarize his theology in one sentence. His reply, ‘Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.’ Music has the ability to instill great truths in simple ways deep within our souls. From attending Montreat Music and Worship conferences as a teen, singing in choirs, handbells, and praise bands, to studying music as a college student, this has been my experience and inspiration.”

Aaron feels incredibly honored to be counted among the wonderful pastors who have serviced this community in the past.

“There is no value we can place on being back home,” he says. “My oldest is 19 and will be a student at Gardner-Webb University in the fall, my other two boys are 17 and 13, and my daughter is 11. While they miss their friends in Georgia, and this is a huge sacrifice for them, I’m confident Bethel will be a wonderful landing spot for new friends and a rich

“This church is almost 200 years old, and Sarah and I are both excited to serve Bethel,” he adds. “We look forward to knowing every name, hugging every neck, and seeing this church flourish for many years to come. We also look forward to being involved in the greater community through service and mission, as well as civic involvement. The church exists for the glory of Jesus Christ. And, as the prophet Jeremiah encouraged the exiles in Babylon: ‘Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.’ (Jeremiah 29:7) We want to be a light and a blessing for folks near and far, in Cornelius, Lake Norman, North Carolina, and to the ends of the earth, and I believe Bethel desires the same. It is certainly poised to do just that!”

SUPERHERO SUPERHERO SAYS ABOUT YOU.

What is a hero? Merriam-Webster defines a hero as “a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability.” But that doesn’t seem quite right. Heroes can be so much more than just a mythological figure with divine traits that we look to for entertainment. These fictional beings can also serve as role models for their remarkable but more humanistic traits. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a hero is “a person admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” Our modern heroes can be a guide or a teacher, showing us what greatness in our own lives could look like through their actions.

We are surrounded by amazing and larger than life heroes in our everyday lives, from books, movies, and games to the people we spend time with at work, at home and everywhere in between. These extraordinary characters are the embodiment of strength and exceptional abilities. We watch in awe as they repeatedly save their piece of the world from ultimate destruction, time and time again. Most of us feel especially connected to one or more of these superheroes. We may feel a personal understanding or affinity for their particular superpower. Everyone needs a hero to look up to, to cheer on and to be inspired by. What does the hero you admire most say about you?

SUPERMAN: You have a strong moral compass, and you like to keep order in your life and your relationships. You are probably the firstborn and are a bit of an overachiever, so you’re used to setting an example and handling the pressure that comes with it. You don’t like to be on the losing team. You’re loyal to a fault and get along best with others who are the same. You like rules and do everything by the book.

BATMAN: You tend to be a do-gooder that prefers not to have all the accolades. You have a strong sense of right and wrong and you are prone to step into action when you feel an injustice has been committed. You’re a realist with a pessimistic bent. You’ve seen the worst and know that you

need to see the ugly side of things to appreciate life fully. You’re more likely to be the one who does the work and less likely to be one who takes the microphone and speaks.

WONDER WOMAN: You enjoy being the only gal in a group of guys. You don’t mind being feminine as long as you can show you’re powerful as well. You’re an optimist, but you also know that people will let you down. You’re confident, strong, self-assured and a leader among your friends. You are prone to taking everything on yourself instead of asking for help when you need it most.

SPIDER-MAN: You are smart, witty, and prefer to stay out of the spotlight. You don’t have a fear of heights, but you may have a fear of commitment, making it difficult to express your feelings to someone you care about. You like to live life in the shadows, and you don’t like to draw attention to yourself. You were probably that kid who was never afraid of spiders.

IRON MAN: You love the latest gadgets, toys, and appreciate the finer things in life. You are the life of the party, and like your heroes to have some fun! You love to live life to the fullest, but need to remember that money isn’t everything. Some may call you a recluse, but you have a loyal, close circle of friends.

THE HULK: Things can set you off and when you’re angry, boy are you angry. People don’t really like you when you’re angry. You are a bit of a loner though because you feel shy in some social settings. People may mistake that shyness for being aloof, but really on the inside you’re a softie. For the most part, you don’t hide your emotions and prefer to tell people how you’re really feeling. You have a strong personality and are protective of others. When people get to know you, they see your kind and thoughtful side.

5 HOTTEST TRENDS TO ELEVATE YOUR SUMMER STYLE

Insider Tips for Effortlessly Rocking Fabulous and Confident Looks Beyond Cute Summer Dresses!

While fashion magazines may tout ‘cute’ summer dresses as the must-have trend each year, true style goes beyond just one item. If you’re looking to elevate your fashion game and exude sophistication and style, let me share some insider tips with you.

TRANSPARENT TREND. Take your fashion game to the next level with transparent pieces like sheer fabrics and netted clothing, perfect for making a bold and edgy statement.

Styling see-through pieces can be challenging, but layering is the key to achieving a chic and modern look. Mix sheer fabrics with other fabrics to create a complex and sophisticated outfit.

BOUDOIR CLOTHES. Boudoir clothes such as slip dresses, silk/ satin shorts and tops, and lace fabrics, are all about creating a sensual and sophisticated look, featuring luxurious fabrics that drape elegantly on the body.

To achieve the modern silhouette, choose fabrics that compliment your body without clinging too tightly or outlining any imperfections.

OVERSIZED DENIM. Get ready to rock the oversized denim trend with head-to-toe denim looks or by mixing oversized bottoms with form-fitting or oversized tops for a chic and stylish outfit.

For a bold and daring denim look, try denim on denim outfits this season. To make it even more stylish and sophisticated, add a pair of heels for an extra boost of confidence.

When it comes to styling these various trends, one key aspect to keep in mind is the power of an eclectic outfit. Combining different styles and pieces in one ensemble can help you elevate and modernize your look, creating a unique and personalized style.

By combining contrasting elements, such as pairing a sheer top with tailored suit, or adding silk top to your utility outfit, you can create an eclectic and eye-catching look. This approach not only allows you to showcase your individuality but also gives you the freedom to experiment with different pieces and styles.

An essential point to remember when it comes to accessorizing: If your outfit is already making a statement, opt for modern accessories to complement it, rather than overwhelming it. And if your outfit is outdated, it’s time for a wardrobe refresh, not just some new accessories.

Another important factor to consider when building a stylish wardrobe is the fit of your clothes. No matter how expensive or trendy an item may be, if it doesn’t fit you well, it won’t look good.

Take the time to get to know your body type and

MAXI SKIRTS.

Maxi skirts are a versatile and stylish option that can help you achieve a posh and fabulous look. One key factor to consider when wearing a maxi skirt is creating a flattering body proportion.

Thanks to their length, which can go below your ankle and down to the floor, maxi skirts can create an elongated and streamlined silhouette. This not only adds a touch of sophistication to your outfit but also helps to create a balanced and proportional look.

UTILITY CLOTHES.

Utility clothes, such as cargo pants and skirts, have found a way into our hearts and wardrobes due to their comfort and return to the 2000s trend.

To take your utility style to the next level, consider opting for clothing with oversized pockets and statement belts. The bigger the pockets, the better. Not only will this add a unique touch to your outfit, but it will also enhance the utilitarian vibe that these pieces are known for.

choose clothes that flatter your figure. Don’t be afraid to invest in tailoring to make your clothes fit perfectly.

Finally, don’t forget to incorporate your personal taste and personality into your wardrobe. Your style should reflect who you are and make you feel confident and comfortable. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and trends, but always stay true to yourself.

PARENTS CAN GIVE STUDENTS HEADING to COLLEGE

Lake Norman area high school seniors have completed graduation or are preparing to graduate this month. LKN Magazine wants to congratulate each and every one of these students for the hard work and dedication it took to reach this major milestone. Some of these graduating seniors are getting ready for the next big step: college. It is an exciting and nerve-wracking time, and parents are an important part of their child's transition from high school to college. Here are some tips for parents to help their child make the most of their college experience.

First and foremost, parents should encourage their child to take responsibility for their college experience. While parents should provide guidance and support, it's important for students to take ownership of their education and make their own decisions. This includes choosing a major, selecting classes, and getting involved in extracurricular activities. By giving their child the tools to make informed decisions, parents can help their child succeed in college and beyond.

study habits and time management skills. This includes setting aside dedicated study time, breaking up larger assignments into manageable chunks, and seeking help from professors and tutors when needed. By helping their child develop strong academic habits, parents can set them up for success in college and beyond.

Socializing is also an important aspect of the college experience. For many students, college is their first opportunity to live away from home and meet new people from different backgrounds. Parents can encourage their child to get involved in extracurricular activities, join clubs or organizations that align with their interests, and attend campus events. This can help students build connections with their peers and develop a sense of community on campus. Additionally, parents can remind their child to prioritize self-care and mental health, which includes maintaining healthy relationships and seeking help when needed.

Another important aspect of the transition to college is financial responsibility. College can be expensive, and it's important for students to understand the cost of tuition, room and board, textbooks, and other expenses. Parents should talk to their child about budgeting and help them develop a plan for managing their finances. This includes discussing options for financial aid, scholarships, and student loans. By working together to create a financial plan, parents can help their child avoid financial stress and focus on their studies.

One of the biggest adjustments for students in college is the increased level of academic rigor. College courses are often more challenging than high school classes, and students are expected to take more responsibility for their own learning. Parents can help their child prepare for this transition by encouraging them to develop good

Finally, parents should remember to be supportive and understanding during the transition to college. It can be a difficult time for both parents and students, as they adjust to new routines and responsibilities. It's important for parents to listen to their child's concerns and provide emotional support when needed. This includes being available to talk, offering encouragement and praise, and helping their child navigate any challenges that arise.

For students, the transition from high school to college is a major milestone. It's a time of growth and exploration, and with the right support, students can thrive in this new environment. By providing guidance, encouragement, and financial support, parents can help their child make the most of their college experience and prepare for a successful future.

Grieving Child on Father’s Day

Dear Grieving Child,

If you’ve ever heard and felt the saying, “Even in a crowded room, you feel alone,” you’ve likely experienced grief. In my almost 13 years of being a grieving daughter, I’ve learned a lot and also felt a lot of different things. If you’re reading this and you relate to this story, please know I’m so sorry that you’ve lost your dad. My hope in writing this letter is that if you are a grieving child, you might feel a little less alone this month. Everyone’s experience with grief and loss is different, however, there is an unspoken understanding when you’ve lost a parent.

Father’s Day can look different for so many people; it may be a holiday that comes with extensive plans, gift buying, fun activities or delicious meals. It can also be a holiday that is mailing a simple card or just another day. For the grieving child, it can be a holiday that carries with it more emotions than plans and more feelings than words.

I remember in the hours after my father passed away, trying to process that information and what that meant. I remember thinking, “I won’t be buying a Father’s Day present next year.” What an odd thing to think about at a time like this, I thought. I was almost a year away from the next Father’s Day, and there were no mail ads reminding me of the upcoming holiday or pressure to be making the perfect plans. Yet, it was one of the first things I thought of where it would be noticeable that my “normal” life was not going to feel normal anymore. I just lost my father, so what was I supposed to do or feel when the focus of the day was on the person I just lost?

Give Yourself Permission

As you are approaching the date, you may be feeling dread and anticipation of how the day might feel to you. In my years of grieving, one thing has remained true – it’s human to have assumptions of how we might feel, but grief can take the predictability out of almost anything. As you approach this holiday, allow yourself to wonder about how you will likely feel but also lean into the fact that it’s uncertain how your grief will present itself. We often tell ourselves the narrative we should be feeling or behaving a certain way when grieving. Everyone is unique in their experience, and each year can feel different from the last.

Lean Into the Grief Wave

At times, the wave of grief can be a slow build, we feel it bubble up and push it down over and over. We say things like “I don’t have time to feel this” or “I’ve got to be strong and not fall apart.” It’s true, there are times when we can’t lean into our grief for whatever reason. It’s also important to allow ourselves to let the wave be released before it becomes a tsunami. You might notice weeks before Father’s Day, there is a slow build growing. Store ads promoting “Ideal Gifts for Dads,” group texts with the family planning a cookout or Facebook memories popping up. Allow yourself the time and space to be still and lean into your grief, otherwise, your grief will decide for you when it will overflow.

Connect With Your Father

When your father dies, your relationship with him changes but does not have to end. This was a concept that took me a while to understand – it’s not instant. Spend time this Father’s Day connecting with who he was and who he will be to you now. What is his legacy to you? How would you define him? Was there something he had a passion for that you would like to carry on? Spending time reflecting on how his life and death impacted you is an important part of the process. These are the questions that can help you discover what Father’s Day might look like for you now. It won’t be in the form of a new necktie or a sappy Hallmark card; your gift now is what you can offer to the world around you because of the experience you’ve had with losing the person that helped give you life.

It doesn’t matter if this is your first Father’s Day without him or your 20th, it will forever be different. Even though grief has the power to make us feel like no one in the world understands, please know that this Father’s Day, you’re not alone.

WHERE ANIMALS ARE FREE TO LOVE AND BE LOVED!

WITH A STRONG PASSION FOR FURRY FRIENDS WHO OFFER SUCH HEALING LOVE AND COMPANIONSHIP OF THEIR OWN, ANGELS TO THE ANIMALS—A 501(C)(3) ANIMAL RESCUE ORGANIZATION—IS A LOCAL NON-PROFIT GROUP FIRST INSPIRED BY “LEAD ANGEL,” MICKEY MACK.

“First and foremost, our inspiration came from Mickey—a gentle, kind, and humble man who felt called upon to help all animals,” says Melissa Lang, President of Angels to the Animals. “A small group of residents started helping him feed and care for neglected and chained animals in the Stanley and Lincolnton areas. Mickey had been using his own funds for years, but we joined his mission just under two years ago and, as people heard about us, they wanted to contribute to our efforts.”

Angels to the Animals bases their work on three core values: compassion, integrity, and dedication, with a mission to keep animals free from hunger, malnutrition, thirst, fear, distress, pain, injury, disease, and discomfort. The ultimate goal is for every animal to be free to love and be loved!

Melissa says personally, her inspiration comes from seeing the faces of grateful animals.

“Their body language that changes from fearful to trusting, their downward-looking faces that finally gaze upward with soulful eyes, and the pure joyful displays when we visit them,” she explains.

Angels to the Animals currently has approximately 40 volunteers who assist in varying ways, including on-site care for providing food and water, shelter (including housing, tarps, and straw), cleaning soiled areas, and applying flea and tick treatments.

Volunteers also transport dogs and cats for spay and neutering, or medical appointments, and also assist with website and graphics design, social media, or help with fundraising and adoption events. Helpers may also be involved with bathing dogs, walking, training, or taking pups for outings to a nearby park or store.

Melissa says the group is alerted to potentially harmful situations primarily from community members, but also from other community organizations such as Helping Animals to Survive (HATS) and Heart of the Carolina’s who build fences to get dogs off chains. Their name has become fairly well known, and as word spreads, neighbors feel comfortable contacting the group directly.

“We do an initial drive-by assessment and, if we feel it is warranted, we approach the owner to see how we can help,” Melissa explains.

The group also partners with several wonderful veterinarians in the area, primarily Westshore

Animal Hospital, East Catawba Animal Clinic, Cherryville Animal Hospital, and Denver Animal Emergency for the most severe cases. For spay and neutering, the group partners with other amazing local groups such as Gastonia Low Cost Spay/Neuter, Stand For Animals in Mooresville, and the Charlotte Humane Society.

“While our primary area is Lincoln County, we have helped animals in Gastonia, Catawba, Iredell County, Morganton, and Concord (Cabarrus County),” says Melissa. “Due to geographic convenience, we try to remain within Lincoln County, but we are here to help all the animals who need us—in whatever way possible!”

Angels to the Animals differs from other local groups in that they provide frequent on-site care. Their mission is to educate the owners, whenever possible, and if they are doing the best they can and truly want to keep their pet, the group makes sure the animal is up-to-date on vaccines, and provides whatever is needed to make the pet comfortable and healthy, including spay and neutering.

“If we feel the pet is too neglected or in harm’s way, or that the homeowner isn’t trying to improve, even with our help, we work to persuade them to allow us to re-home the pet,” Melissa explains. “Sometimes that’s easy, other times it’s not, but we do have a good success rate. Our efforts help ease the burden on the county animal shelter that is often full to capacity and whose hands are often tied due to the limiting county ordinances.”

And they want you to spread the word!

TRAFFIC AT THE LAKE

Just after we moved to the lake, I was standing on a tennis court in Denver talking to some new friends.

“You’ll like it here,” one said. “My only advice is to avoid Highway 16 from about 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. and then again from about 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., and you’ll do just fine.”

He could have swapped in several other highways, and the statement would have been just as accurate.

Traffic goes from bad to horrible during inseason weekends, and it goes from horrible to apocalyptic around the holidays. I lived in New York City for 20 years and have never seen worse traffic than the Target parking lot at Christmas in Mooresville. If ever there’s a buying rush for a zombie apocalypse, I recommend avoiding this parking lot that turns into a gridlocked, well, parking lot.

Last holiday season we were late picking up a Christmas tree but managed to nab one of the last ones at Lowe’s on Highway 150. The guy just behind me in line was there searching for a Christmas tree stand, but they were sold out so he bought a firepit on sale to (I assume) burn his Christmas tree.

Traffic pulling out of Lowe’s was, of course, a nightmare. After waiting through a few cycles of a traffic light that’s so long you start to wonder if it’s malfunctioning, it was finally my turn to go, but of course some guy pulled into the middle of the intersection blocking traffic. I pulled out and drove around him, but a police officer in an unmarked car disagreed with my logic and hit his lights to pull me over. I’m not sure what was going on in the police officer’s personal life, but I will say the high-level anger and outrage he brought to my car window felt wildly disproportionate to the level of the crime. Maybe he did some breathing exercises in his car after collecting my license and registration, because a few minutes later he returned them with a written warning and a verbal one: “They were supposed to widen this highway but pushed it out a few years, so get used to bad traffic here.”

Traffic is so bad along this highway, and you have to wait for such a long time to make a left turn onto it, that you’re almost better off turning right and then driving all the way around the world. When I drive to the grocery store I’ll go past cars trying to make a left turn. And then on my way home, I swear I’ll see some of them still waiting. But I guess that’s part of the admission price for life at the lake. Maybe one day we’ll see some road construction start.
