There's so much to celebrate this month! First and foremost, it’s a milestone birthday for me. I’m turning 65, and as an entrepreneur for more than half of my life (and my husband too), this is a huge moment for us—we finally have Medicare! Now time can surely slow down a bit. July is extra special because our kids visit often, and we treasure these moments so much!

I am a prime example of it never being too late to follow your dreams! Starting LKN Magazine at just over age 63 has exceeded all my expectations, and I couldn't be happier with where we are after two short years.

We're also thrilled to feature Rock Barn Country Club & Spa in our latest edition. I was fortunate enough to attend the photo shoot, and it did not disappoint! Without a doubt, it’s the most beautiful spa and country club around, and the golf course is over the

top. Turn to page 28 to read more about this stunning destination.

We are also celebrating with Savannah Oyster Co. and the Isabella Santos Foundation. Don’t miss their inspiring story on page 46. Plus, check out the incredible events happening in and around the lake this July!

Pictured below is our family minus my son, Tanner, who was in Aruba celebrating his girlfriend's 30th birthday!

A big shout-out to the LKN team, who continue to exceed expectations every month. We couldn't achieve all of this without them! Stay tuned for exciting announcements about new distribution locations in some of the charming areas around beautiful Lake Norman.

& MORE DESIGNS TO BRIGHTEN EVERY CORNER

FROM VIVID FLORALS TO SOPHISTICATED STRIPES AND FUN GEOMETRIC PATTERNS, THERE’S ALWAYS THE PROMISE OF SUPERB DESIGN AND INNOVATIVE STYLING AT LEDFORD FABRICS & MORE IN LINCOLNTON, NC. IF YOU’RE UPDATING AN OUTDOOR SPACE FOR THE SEASON OR NEED A HOSTESS GIFT FOR A LONG WEEKEND, IT’S AN EASY DRIVE FROM THE LAKE NORMAN AREA.

Current Owners Don Hartsoe and Scott Davis bought the property and its full contents in 2018, excited to build on the respected reputation of a local business that had operated in the community for close to 30 years. Their team has remodeled and rejuvenated the long-standing business with a slightly new name and a daily goal of offering their expertise to every customer – who, in turn, feels comfortable choosing a fabric to accent an area of their home – maybe exploring a totally new style! Plus, you can’t leave without the finishing touch of one of the store’s amazing candle fragrances.

Scott’s wife, Patti, who previously owned her own home décor shop before this new business venture, keeps things running smoothly, and she’s also been involved in designing pillows since the new store opened. With summer in full swing, clients are always in search of stylish outdoor pillows and new fabrics for their outdoor porches, sunrooms and entertaining areas. Of course that includes Sunbrella outdoor fabric and marine vinyl, with poly and down inserts available for pillows of all sizes – all available at the Lincolnton store.

“We started out making customers’ pillows out of our regular stock fabrics,” shares Patti. “Once Don and I developed sources for higher-end fabrics, I began expanding the offer for designer pillows.”

Year round, Ledford Fabrics is a trusted source for seat bottoms, bench cushions, ottomans and any other home project your inner creative self can imagine.

“We love seeing photos of customer projects!” says Patti. “Seeing them excited about their furniture that’s in need of restoration and reupholstering is amazing.” Beyond furniture, Patti shares that several customers buy fabric to design gorgeous handbags, while others purchase hair-on-hide leather to use as rugs.

A team of 10 part time employees – the friendliest around – are skilled at helping customers select colors for draperies, upholstery and pillows, and the store is always well stocked with a wide choice of colors, textures and designs at very appealing prices. Once you’ve chosen the perfect fabric, they are happy to recommend an excellent local vendor to complete your reupholstery project.

“The staff always tries their best to find the fabrics customers are looking for – or close to those fabrics, if not in their stock.” -L.D.

Ledford Fabrics also offers a fashionable variety of home accessories, including lamps and artwork, fabulous candles, seasonal wreaths and custom made designer pillows – always ideal as

gifts. At times, you might find a unique piece of furniture or an upholstered headboard, and you’ll always leave with a new décor inspiration.

While you’re browsing the store, be sure to greet and say hello to seamstress Ruth Wright, who also worked with the previous owners. At the age of 81, Ruth is still all smiles when she sees a customer happily purchasing pillows she has sewn – and customers adore meeting her and putting a face with the talented seamstress who made their new purchase!

Ledford Fabrics & More is located at 202 West Pine Street in Lincolnton, NC, 704.732.0233. Store hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Follow them for updates, new fabrics and glimpses of fun projects on Facebook and Instagram @ledfordfabrics.

“Ledford Fabrics is a hidden gem in Lincolnton, NC and our favorite place to shop! From the knowledgeable, helpful staff to their beautiful selection of fabrics, the store is a must see for anyone looking for drapery or upholstery fabric.”

“They have an incredible selection for everything from upholstery and window treatments to outdoor pillows and even gorgeous leathers. The employees are always happy to help you find exactly what you are looking for!”

SUMMERTIME LOW COUNTRY BOIL

July is the perfect time to gather friends and family for a classic backyard feast, and what better dish to serve than a Low Country Boil! This easy-to-make meal not only feeds a large group, but also offers a great medley of various seafood options. The best part is that you can customize it to suit your taste preferences.

To create this mouthwatering feast, you’ll need some essential ingredients such as corn on the cob (4-6 cobs), sausage (1 pack of 4), shrimp (1.5-2 lbs), and a bag of red potatoes. However, I highly recommend adding some lobster tails (generally 4) and crab legs (2 lbs) into the mix. Apart from these, you’ll need a large pot or a turkey fryer (if you prefer to cook outdoors), a couple of lemons, an orange and a white onion. The quantity of ingredients depends on the number of people you’re serving, but the following proportions generally serve around four people.

Let’s get started with the cooking process. Fill your large pot or turkey fryer halfway with water, and bring it to a rolling boil. For an authentic and flavorful twist, add a generous amount of seasoning to the water. Old Bay seasoning is a popular choice, readily available in most stores. However, you can also explore seafood boil-specific seasonings at farmers markets or specialty stores. While your water is boiling, slice the cobs of corn in half, slice the red potatoes in half, slice your sausages into bite size slices and devein the shrimp (if not already deveined.)

Once the seasoned water is boiling, add the halved lemons and orange. Next, add the halved red potatoes to the pot. From this point, it’s time to start

the countdown. Set a 20-minute timer, marking each step accordingly. At the 5-minute mark (15 minutes remaining), add diced andouille sausage (or any sausage of your choice) and onions. After 5 more minutes (10 minutes remaining), toss in the corn and crab legs. Finally, after 7 minutes (3 minutes remaining), add the shrimp and lobster tails. I also like to add more old bay seasoning throughout the cook as I’m adding each ingredient to get everything very well seasoned and full of flavor.

Once everything is done and your timer is up, turn off the burner and allow the boil to rest for a few minutes while you prepare the table. I suggest using a tablecloth or newspaper as a cover and arranging an assortment of hot sauces (Cackalacky Pepper sauce & old bay hot sauce are my favorites), melted butter, and crackers or cornbread alongside the boil.

Next, you’ll pour the contents of the pot onto the table or your chosen serving area and season all over with more old bay (or seafood seasoning of choice), squeeze some fresh lemon juice all on top and now it’s finally time to dig in! Enjoy!

PLANISHEK PROPERTIES

PARTNERS IN PLANNING YOUR DREAM HOME

So much more than walls and windows, Tom and Amanda Planishek of Planishek Properties know home is a place like no other. Both agree houses are a steadfast background in an everchanging environment – and, to quote Amanda, “a place that provides family comfort and safety, a place that sees the good, the bad and everything in-between.”

Their business provides high quality, custom-built homes to inspire family adventure – with personal inspiration that often springs forward from their own family life and what it means to be “home.” With more than 20 years of experience in construction and development, Amanda shares how Planishek Properties has evolved.

“We established the business in 2019, however, Tom and I have been building custom homes together since 2012, and he has been in the commercial construction industry since 2005. We’ve worked on some really large projects, and in the past, building homes had always been a hobby business for us,” she adds. “We spent time doing our own projects along with builds for friends.”

Over time, the pair developed a passion for building custom homes and helping other families achieve their vision – and this year, Tom decided to leave the chaos of the corporate world, and he and Amanda made Planishek Properties their full-time gig!

Get to know this full-service property development company based in Denver, NC, and you’ll discover their desire to be true partners with their clients.

“For our homes, we love creating features that would be enjoyed by our own family,” Amanda says. “Having a large dog, three kids and a live-in brother gives us lots of perspective. For us, a high level of activity is important, as we like the family to be off the video games and doing things together. The lake has been an extension of our ‘home,’ and we enjoy the countless activities and venues it offers. Most importantly, we love the relaxed nature and fun people we meet along the way.”

“In the ever-changing business and social climate, we are seeing that many of our clients’ daily routines occur in their home,” adds Tom. “It’s pretty common now for both husband and wife to work from home, and argue over who gets ‘the office’ and who works at the dining room table. Or, you may work out five days a week but not have time to drive to the gym. We’re also seeing a comeback in sculleries as many of our clients like to have their kitchens clean when entertaining – leaving prep-work done behind the scenes. Finally, we’re also seeing a lot more ‘generational homes’ that require dual master suites.”

“For our homes, we love creating features that would be enjoyed by our own family.”

With so many factors involved in envisioning someone’s “forever” home, that initial conversation with a prospective client is crucial – learning how a space would be used and establishing a realistic total project target budget and wish-list (with some room for last-minute add-ons, of course). The Planishek team leads you through the process, keeping the road to home as smooth as possible.

“Amanda and our design partners keep up to date with current trends from around the country, and we do whatever we can to bring those materials from other regions, even if those materials are not readily available in Charlotte,” shares Tom.

“On the construction side, our trade partner relationships with both small and large providers result in very competitive pricing and the ability to procure unique items. From heavy timbers to custom ornamental metals, we can get it!”

Planishek Properties also takes pride in their ability to maintain scheduling, as well as perform the entire construction process from land acquisition through interior design. They offer financing through a strong relationship with Pinnacle Financial Partners, and a 10-year structural warranty backed by Zurich – something you don’t always see from small local builders.

For more information or to schedule a consultation, call 704.880.8110, email info@planishekproperties.com or contact them online at planishekproperties.com where you can also view many of their recent beautiful builds! Planishek Properties is licensed in both North and South Carolina.

CLIENT REFERRALS ARE ALWAYS THE BEST ACCOLADES!

“Our experience with Planishek Properties was amazing throughout the entire process! Everything from home design to finishing touches was smooth. Planishek Properties provided extreme attention to detail in all areas of our new home. They offered suggestions and advice when we asked. We are so grateful for the top-of-the-line trade partners who constructed our home with superior workmanship. Everyone worked in an efficient manner and was quick with communication. We are forever thankful that they turned our dream on paper into a beautiful reality.” - SETH P.

“My wife and I purchased our home during the summer of 2023. It was our first custom home, and we are extremely satisfied with the care and attention that went into design, build and finishes. These touches, in addition to the location, will help ensure the value of the property continues to rise going forward.” - MIKE M.

4TH OF JULY

FIREWORK BLONDIES

These homemade blondies are rich, buttery and chewy. The browned butter gives these blondies the perfect nutty flavor! They would be a great treat for your 4th of July gathering!

Servings: 12 • Prep time: 35 minutes • Total time: 60 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, browned

• 1 ½ cups light brown sugar

• 2 large egg yolks

• 2 large eggs

• 2 tsp. vanilla

• ½ tsp. baking powder

• 2 tsp. cornstarch

• 2 ½ cups flour

• 1 tsp. salt

• 15 golden Oreos, chopped

• 5 golden Oreos, crumbled

• ½ cup red, white and blue sprinkles

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 9x13 baking pan with nonstick spray.

2. Brown the butter in a saucepan on the stove – this will take about 10 minutes, and you’ll want to stir constantly until it starts to foam and brown. Cool the butter in the fridge for 10 minutes.

3. In a bowl, combine the brown sugar and the butter, and stir until mixed well. Beat in the eggs and the egg yolks until smooth and then add the vanilla.

4. In a different bowl, combine the dry ingredients and mix well.

5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined. Stir in the chopped Oreos.

6. Add the sprinkles and fold in.

7. Spread the blondie mixture in the 9x13 pan and top with the Oreo crumbs and additional sprinkles.

8. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the top is golden.

9. Allow to cool and cut into squares. Enjoy!

TIME TO CHOOSE YOUR SITE AND INTERIOR SELECTIONS

Welcome to The Cottages, a unique pocket neighborhood where a vibrant sense of community thrives. In this charming community, the traditional notion of front doors takes a delightful twist. Instead of facing the street, the front doors of our cottages open to a serene and inviting green space, tucked away on the backside of each home. This intentional layout creates an atmosphere that not only encourages residents to explore on foot but also promotes a genuine sense of connection and belonging. It’s not just a place to live; it’s a place to connect, grow, and create lifelong memories.

5 EASY STEPS TO DESIGNING A ROOM

Let’s get back to the basics! Designing a room isn’t all that hard if you follow these easy guidelines and my personal no-fail hacks.

1. Begin with a space plan.

Yes, this might seem obvious, but too many times I’ve seen clients come to me with problems because they bought a sofa that wouldn’t fit into their space. I start every project by sketching an outline of the room. Numerous free tools are accessible on the internet, or you can go the old-fashioned route and use pen and paper to sketch out your space with all walls, windows and doors. Dare I say, I’ve seen this too often (overlooking a doorway on a room sketch and thus buying a sofa that blocks the entry to the room). An accurate space plan is one of the most important aspects of designing a room, so if this step feels out of your wheelhouse, come see us at Accent Prone! We love helping customers in store think through the best layout, always keeping function and flow top of mind!

2. Work big to small.

Once you have figured out the best layout for your room, begin selecting new furnishings for your space. I always recommend working big to small in your room, carefully selecting your largest items first. If it’s your living room, then that’s your sofa, or if it’s your bedroom, then that is your bed. As the large anchor pieces can vary in size and style, starting with these core items will help determine the size of their companions. And, don’t forget your rug! A rug is an essential item in every room, grounding your space and defining the area. This is a great opportunity to bring in color, too.

3. Find your inspiration piece.

After space planning, I always like to find one inspiration piece to guide the rest of the room’s design. Maybe it’s a bold piece of artwork you want to hang over your sofa or some moody wallpaper for your dining room. Starting with one item you love will guide the vision and direction of the rest of the space. I’ve designed an entire room around a funky vase I scored one time, leading the way for the colors I wanted to incorporate.

4. Paint

A fresh coat of paint is by far the easiest and most affordable way to revitalize a space. After years of picking paint colors for clients, there is one rule I never break: sampling! Paint up numerous samples of different colors/tones on your walls. I always paint samples on all the different walls in the

room, as the direction the wall faces and the way the sun hits it throughout the day will make it look different. You will also want to look at the samples on your wall at all different times throughout the day to make sure you like it in the morning, afternoon and evening. There have been times where I loved a paint color in the morning light, but hated it in the darker evening hours.

*Design Tip! I like to do eggshell on walls, semi gloss on trim and flat on ceilings!

5. Accessorize

And, last but not least, add in the accents! This is where the true magic happens. Accessorizing your space with pillows, throws, amazing vases and lush greenery is where your space comes alive. I started out my design career by decorating a room on a budget by bringing it alive with accents, and frankly, the accents are still my favorite part!

To sum it all up, designing a room isn’t always this easy (and there are definitely spaces, like a kitchen, where hiring a designer is well worth your investment), but it can be! For those wanting to try their hand at decorating, starting with a space that doesn’t need any construction work is a fun place to start. So go ahead, break out the pen and pencil, pull up Pinterest for some great inspiration and get to designing!

YOUR FAMILY’S BEST LIFE AWAITS

A BREATHTAKING, RESORT STYLE DESTINATION IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD, ROCK BARN COUNTRY CLUB & SPA OFFERS

A LIFESTYLE BRIMMING WITH FIRST CLASS AMENITIES, LOVELY EVENT SPACES, BEAUTIFUL HOMES AND A CAMARADERIE AMONG NEIGHBORS THAT’S SECOND TO NONE.

Comfortably nestled in the western North Carolina foothills, Rock Barn Country Club & Spa has been offering an almost too-good-to-be-true backdrop for social and athletic pursuits since 1969. Centrally located – mere minutes away from I-40, yet miles away from the pull of daily routine – this hidden gem is the perfect getaway from Charlotte, Greensboro or Asheville, and even an easy trip from both Virginia and Georgia for a retreat that’s well worth the drive!

Hospitality is second nature to the warm, welcoming staff of Rock Barn Country Club & Spa who happen to love what they do – and it shows. With a casual, relaxed vibe that especially appeals to young families, more new members are under the age of 40 than ever before – a boost for the longevity of Rock Barn, says General Manager Brad Ellinger. In addition to two acclaimed golf courses and enormously popular day spa, the resort is family oriented, offering kid-friendly events throughout the year, and both fine and casual dining. Rock Barn Country Club & Spa is a premier location that provides the perfect setting for your wedding, corporate meeting, charity golf event, holiday party or intimate family gathering.

Open for public booking, Rock Barn offers an endless array of unique event options ranging from the small and inviting setting of Bo Don’s Library to the Blue Ridge Ballroom, with a 280-person capacity and a panoramic view of the Robert Trent Jones Course. All event spaces are fully equipped with state-ofthe-art audio/visual computer systems, and Fine Occasions, their in-house event planner, will work to plan and execute a customized experience just for you.

Best of all, community is at the heart of every relationship at Rock Barn, and rejuvenating mind and body is always on the menu here. That recipe includes feeling at home among the very best neighbors and friends, and many agree the only thing better than simply being a member of Rock Barn is becoming a resident – relaxing on your deck with wine and a view, realizing you are living your best life!

GOLFING AS IT SHOULD BE

When savvy businessman Don Beaver acquired Rock Barn Country Club & Spa in 1997, he was poised to create a premier golfing community and resort style destination, with two championship courses and the absolute finest amenities. In 2003, Rock Barn hosted its first Senior PGA Tournament, which became a tradition for the next 13 years, an impressive outing for the city of Conover with only around 7,000 residents at the time.

Portrait by Glen Fox Photography

Today, the Tom Jackson Course is Rock Barn’s public course, appealing to golfers of all levels and handicaps, boasting a course that provides interesting challenges with each round. The public is welcome to play on the award-winning Jackson Course – an annual recipient of Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” distinction – and browse at the golf shop or dine at the Fresh Chef Café.

The club’s private Robert Trent Jones Course is the more challenging of the two courses, offering a layout that takes full advantage of the local terrain. In 2023, the North Carolina Golf Panel ranked the Jones Course the 25th best course to play in the state and the 5th best course in the western region. Golf facilities and courses at Rock Barn are open six days a week, and the mild North Carolina winters often allow the blessing of year round play!

THE SPA AT ROCK BARN

Alongside hosting its first Senior PGA Tournament, Don also proposed the idea of adding a wellness spa to the Rock Barn community in 2003; a vision he shared with his wife, Vickie, who fell in love with the idea. “We visited other spas all over the country and picked up details that we liked – with a dream to make ours into a premier facility,” shares Vickie, also a talented artist. She credits her husband with the initial spa vision –noting that his concepts are “always ahead of the times” – but acknowledges its ongoing success belongs to the incredible staff and their dedication to the finest hospitality. Flame Deal, Spa Operations Director, and her team have created a true oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation at The Spa at Rock Barn that leaves you feeling pampered and appreciated! The newly renovated 21,000-square-foot European Day Spa – open to the public – couldn’t be more perfect for a girls’ weekend away, a birthday surprise for Mom, bachelorette or bridal party, or your next corporate event. Relax on the spacious Hydrotherapy Circuit deck with a salt water pool that includes underwater music, two therapeutic mineral waterfalls, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, saunas and essential oil-infused steam rooms, health and beauty treatments, nail salon and poolside dining. Depending on your definition of relaxation, you’ll find the spa a bit more high

energy on the weekends, with a slightly more mellow mood mid week, so plan your getaway accordingly! The finishing touch for your getaway is onsite lodging available in a fourbedroom townhome that accommodates eight to 10 guests and includes select member amenities.

One of many options, the popular Summer Weekday Escape package includes one of the spa’s two most popular services – a massage or facial, 45-minute Himalayan Salt Cave experience, all day access to the Hydrotherapy Circuit, a spa lunch with two beverages, plus chocolate covered strawberries made in house. Notable spa trivia: One of the spa’s first guests was celebrity golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez, who enjoyed a Hot Stone Massage treatment before playing in the 2003 Greater Hickory Classic Pro-Am!

A NEW FOCUS ON THE FAMILY FARM

Nestled in the town of Sherrills Ford, NC, you’ll find the bustling destination of Little Mountain Farm & Cattle Co., nurturing a family dream and a commitment to farming and ranching that’s spreading across the country!

With Co-Owner Robbie Dye’s visionary mindset and passion for fostering community, Little Mountain Farm & Cattle Co. has welcomed almost 2,000 local consumers to taste the deliciousness — and savor the value — of their 100% pasture raised, grass-fed and grain-finished 21-Day Dry Aged USDA Angus beef since opening in January 2024. Best of all, inspiring recognition of the importance of generational farming, Robbie and his wife, Ashley, believe their young children are beginning to understand the gravity of what they are building as a family.

“It’s a story much bigger than just ourselves,” Robbie explains. “Our mission is to provide quality locally raised beef as accessible as possible while educating consumer America on where their food comes from.”

Little Mountain Farm offers access, convenience and fast, first class service to customers ordering their Angus beef, and you can currently place online orders for beef (sold frozen and vacuum sealed) and arrange local pickup, seven days a week, at The Red Barn Marketplace and Lakeside Farmers Market (who also retail their products in-store), as well as at Lake Norman Area Farmers Market in Denver, on Saturday mornings during market hours. Always forward thinking with

their next project, they are also gearing up to offer home delivery and ship nationwide beginning late summer.

“Our family has a longstanding legacy of working cattle, marked by the first registered family cattle brand in Nebraska in 1913,” Robbie shares. “After years away, building careers in the corporate sector, Mom and Dad followed their hearts back to farm life. Today, our family of 11 is dedicated to serving God through stewardship of the land, and Little Mountain Farm & Cattle Co. stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving legacy and keeping farming alive.”

Besides Robbie and Ashley, that extended family includes parents Jeremy and Georgina Verzal, and Robbie’s sister, Kelsie Hove, and her husband, Mason, plus adored grandchildren Paisley, Jaxon, Levi, Ava and Lily. Agriculture is one of the few industries where family is truly a common thread, which means the world to the entire crew.

Robbie and Ashley met in high school, and after years of strong friendship, and each establishing their careers, the two formed a lifelong partnership through marriage and parenthood. As a dynamic entrepreneur with a background in advertising, Robbie heads up the farm’s business relations, sales and marketing, while Ashley manages financial and supply chain administration duties for all three family businesses. (Not to mention being the catalyst behind a smooth day-to-day operation!)

We dare you to find a more down-to-Earth story to set the tone for what’s happening at Little Mountain Farm. The story extends beyond the growing town of Sherrills Ford. Picture Robbie’s grandfather’s porch, in the beef capital of Nebraska, where Robbie was simply enjoying a homemade cheeseburger that seemed to capture his undivided attention. Intrigued by the freshness and flavor of the meat, he learned from his grandfather that the beef was from a neighboring farmer, a farm where Robbie’s dad, Jeremy, grew up working. Cue Robbie’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for family, and that porch experience in 2022 led him to make the move from “corporate to country” leaving behind a successful career in advertising and devoting full time energy to serving Agriculture America and building the family farm.

Taking the story one step further, Robbie launched Our Farms, America’s Farm-Direct Marketplace (ourfarms.com) where consumers can shop from farms and ranches across America from the comfort of their homes. When you’re embracing the notion of farm-to-table, it’s a beautiful thing to know who grew the food you’re eating. As CEO of Our Farms, Robbie is proud to be having a national impact on the farming industry, by educating consumers on where their food comes from and creating a pathway for consumers to shop directly from farms online. This year, Robbie was awarded the “Young Agri-Food” leader of the year by the prominent National Farm Foundation for the innovation that Our Farms is bringing to Agriculture America.

“I am a strong believer that the general public desires to be more connected to their food than ever before,” Robbie shares. “They want to better understand what goes into growing it, who grew it and feel good about keeping their hard-earned dollars within the local economy.”

Positive things are ahead for Our Farms, and the continued mission of connecting consumers and farmers (including beef, produce and dairy), so stay tuned!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 20th, for “Steak by the Lake” hosted at The Red Barn Marketplace in Denver, NC, and presented by Little Mountain Farm & Cattle Co. 5 WAYS TO INCORPORATE UNEXPECTED CASH IN YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN

Receiving an unexpected sum of money can be a welcome surprise, but deciding what to do with it can be a challenge. Should you save the money or pay down debt? Invest the funds or donate to charity?

While rushing to book a vacation with proceeds from a windfall may be tempting, it might be more rewarding to use the funds to shore up your finances for the long run. Here are five strategies to consider:

1. Grow your emergency fund.

A robust emergency fund provides security for financial emergencies. Even if you feel confident about your emergency savings, padding your fund with some of your windfall money can further prepare you for financial curveballs, especially in an uncertain economy.

2. Save for retirement.

Adding a windfall to a tax-advantaged retirement account can be a powerful way to potentially grow that extra money over time. If you have a 401(k) through an employer, you won’t be able to contribute a lump sum to that account, but you can open a traditional or Roth IRA and fund it with your windfall. The 2024 contribution limit for either type of IRA is $7,000 for people younger than 50 and $7,500 for those older than 50.1

3. Invest for the future.

If you’ve maxed out your tax-advantaged investment options, investing through a taxable brokerage account may be the next best way to turn a lump sum of cash into long-term wealth. A financial planner can help determine how to invest to complement your tax-deferred portfolio to help you achieve long-term financial goals.

4. Prepay your mortgage.

A windfall can make a big impact on your mortgage, depending on how much you owe. If you are considering this choice, be sure to ask your lender to put the windfall toward paying down your loan principal, which will reduce your interest payments long-term.

Before prepaying debt, consider opportunity cost, the idea that money used for one purpose can’t be used for another.

Paying down debt could make the most sense if interest payments on the debt are higher than expected returns from your investment portfolio, for example.

5. Donate to charity.

Contributing to causes you care about is a simple way to put your values into action and do good in your community while also reducing your tax liability. In most cases, you can deduct up to 60% of cash contributions to public charities, including donor-advised funds.2

Choosing the best option for you. The best use of a windfall depends on your individual circumstances. If you’ve already maxed out your retirement accounts, paying down your mortgages or donating to charity to reduce taxable income may be a better fit. You can also split a windfall among several options to maximize your advantages.

Additionally, before you spend any of your windfall, you’ll need to determine if you owe taxes on it. Cash gifts under $18,000 from individuals are generally not taxed3, but other lump sums you may receive, like a bonus from work or lottery winnings do count as income and you’ll be taxed accordingly.

Determining the best use of a windfall can be challenging, especially if you feel pulled in multiple directions. Work with your financial advisor to figure out the best course of action as part of a long-term wealth management plan.

MEMORIES of 4TH OF JULY

Commemoration of America’s independence “...ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

JOHN ADAMS

Written in a letter to his wife, Abigail, dated July 3, 1776

The first July Fourth celebration in America was in 1777, a year after our country declared independence from England. The ways we celebrate have varied in the years since then, but several common traditions have emerged like parades and fireworks. From the 1770s to around the 1860s, many towns began the day with artillery fire at dawn if they had cannons on hand. If there were no cannons to be found, some of the men would get up and shoot their muskets into the air to offer a thunderous welcome to Independence Day.

Fourth of July in our world today might include barbecues, pool parties, neighborhood gatherings and watching fireworks at night. Many of us have happy memories of the Fourth from our past, and we’ve asked several of our friends and readers to revisit their memories, so we can share them with you.

“We went to Georgetown, SC every year to watch fireworks over the harbor from the deck of a friend’s house who had a fantastic view. The small town coming together to watch the fireworks display over the shrimp boats and other small boats in the harbor made a beautiful picture, and it was a happy, wonderful time in my life with good friends, good feelings, cocktails on the deck and happiness. We loved our country and loved celebrating it like that.”

“It was the bicentennial in 1976, and we had gone to Raleigh, NC for the big festivities around the capitol building and the fairgrounds. I was five years old, and everything seemed magical. There were crowds of people who showed up to celebrate the Fourth; my mom had made a big deal of getting flags to hold to show our patriotism. It rained just a little, but it didn’t affect the fireworks at all. To this day, that is still the most beautiful fireworks display I have ever seen. The memory of me with my young parents celebrating what was a big deal Fourth of July…200 years of independence, is my best Fourth of July memory.”

“We lived on a street in the 90s where all the neighbors would get together to chip in to buy fireworks. During the day on the Fourth, the kids would all play outside while the moms got the tables of food set up and the dads got the grills ready. We would play and, later on, eat a great feast until it was time for the fireworks. When it was dark, a few of the dads would take charge and get the fireworks ready. For a pretty small street, we put on quite an incredible show. Memories of that time and the closeness of our families will always be my best Fourth of July memory.”

“My dad had just come home from a business trip, and we weren’t really prepared for the Fourth of July. We didn’t know it but he had brought sparklers with him, and we celebrated with sandwiches for dinner and sparklers in the backyard with my two brothers and our parents. To us, it was perfect.”

“I was pregnant with my first child and feeling so sick I didn’t want to be sociable or cook or do much of anything. We had gone to stay at the beach for a week and, although we had planned for a crowd of people to join us, we canceled and just had my husband and myself and his parents. What I didn’t know is that our beach house had the most amazing view of the fireworks being set off in that little beach town. We all sat out on the deck and had the best seats in town.”

TRACKSIDE TALKS: BACK TO THE BRICKYARD

There are three NASCAR races on deck for July; all ones to look forward to for different reasons. Early July kicks off with the second annual Chicago Street Race. Last year, even with unheard of monsoon rains for that time of year which led to a delayed start and the race being cut short, it still turned out to meet the hype and gave us a very exciting finish with New Zealander, Shane van Gisbergen taking the checkered flag at his NASCAR debut! Then in mid July, it’s on to Pocono Raceway (AKA The Tricky Triangle), a super speedway in Long Pond, PA. But, perhaps the race I am looking forward to the most is the Brickyard 400 held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the self-proclaimed Racing Capital of the World.

A little background – IMS was constructed in 1909 and has hosted the highly anticipated Indy 500 since 1911. It wasn’t until 1994 that NASCAR joined the party and held the inaugural Brickyard 400, making it the first race, other than the Indy 500, to race there since 1916. The track used to be made up of more than three million hand-laid bricks, hence the nickname “Brickyard.” A one-yard strip at the start/finish line is the only part of the track with brick still intentionally exposed. For years, the Brickyard 400 was one of the most attended NASCAR races, until around 2008, when attendance began to decline for a handful of reasons. In 2021, NASCAR decided to nix the Brickyard 400 and, instead, the drivers raced the IMS Road Course in hopes the cars would race better and attendance would improve. The general consensus since then, from past and current drivers, fans and those who work in the industry, has been a desire to return to the oval…and back to the oval we go in 2024! What better time than the 30-year anniversary of NASCAR’s first race at IMS?

Dillon Welch, pit reporter for NASCAR/ IndyCar on NBC, was gracious enough to answer a few questions for me. When asked what the significance of NASCAR’s return to the oval for the Brickyard 400 is, he stated, “Indy has always been about the oval track. Drivers want to win on the

oval because that’s why the track is famous. There is no other track like it in the world.”

Being an Indiana native and avid race fan, Welch shared he is “super excited” about being back on the oval. He said he “appreciated the willingness to try the road course” and “it was fun,” but thinks that “a few years off [from the oval] makes it that much more exciting.”

When asked what he anticipates attendance will be like this year, considering that was a large factor in moving away from the oval in 2021, he shared, “Hard to say for sure, but I hope fans respond well. They have been lobbying for the return to the oval for years, so hopefully, they appreciate the track and NASCAR’s response.”

Welch loves the vantage point of working a race from the pits stating, “I enjoy being down on the grid during the pre-race traditions, I love watching and feeling the emotion build to the start of the race. And, then you can experience all the smells, sounds and sights of the start of the race from the ground level. Hard to beat.”

Of course I had to get his opinion on who he thinks has the best chance to kiss the bricks (a long-standing tradition of race winners) this year, and he guessed Kyle Larson reasoning, “He has more laps there lately than the others in the field.”

Kyle Larson attempted the double over Memorial Day weekend, which is when a driver attempts to race both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, NC on the same day. Due to rain delays in both locations, Larson was unable to complete his attempt. Hopefully, he gets another chance in the future!

If you’re a NASCAR fan, the Brickyard 400 is definitely a race to attend at some point, if you haven’t already. I know I can hardly wait to check that one off the list!

If you aren’t planning to be there in person, make sure you tune in on Sunday, July 21st at 2:30 p.m. to see who will take home the checkered flag at IMS, one of NASCAR’s crown jewel tracks. You won’t want to miss it!

Full throttle, Clair

IMPATIENCE: MY $900 STORY

Whether you work or not, there is something about Friday at about 4:00 p.m. that may beckon you to step back from whatever it is that keeps you busy all week and slip into weekend mode. It’s like clockwork for me. On a recent Friday afternoon spent wrapping up a few practical loose ends, I was stopped dead in my tracks by a “scheduled bank withdrawal” in the amount of $900. What IS this? I rifled through my bills, my files, my notes – and nothing could possibly explain this impending withdrawal. I felt the panic rise – I’ve been getting a lot of phishing emails lately. Could it be related to that? Does a nefarious someone have my personal account information and is about to wipe me out? What is going on here? I’ll call the bank.

I felt my heart rate increase along with the pace of my words as I explained the situation. I was referred to another person in the fraud department who politely put me on hold at least twice and then proceeded to tell me all of the steps I needed to take to protect myself should this indeed be that nefarious stranger trying to steal from me. My head was spinning.

However, as the great bard once said, “All’s well that ends well.” And, thus it was on this Friday afternoon because when I took a breath, calmed myself a bit and started to think more rationally, I was able to determine that the $900 withdrawal was an “anticipated” one based on a prior withdrawal I had made the previous month. Oh, duh.

I hope I haven’t gotten you too lost in the weeds of my Friday tale, because the point is really about my struggle with impatience.

The Oxford Dictionary defines “impatient” as “having or showing a tendency to be quickly irritated or provoked.” Well, that certainly applies to me. But, digging deeper, I learned that impatience is a very particular mental and physical process that gets triggered under specific circumstances. True again.

But, here’s the piece that really resonated – at the very root of impatience is fear – a feeling of frustration and being out of control. That is exactly what I was feeling that Friday afternoon.

Impatience creates physiological stress in the body and messes with our ability to think clearly. The curious thing is that our impatience is indeed situational. Some folks grow impatient when they feel it’s taking too long to achieve a goal or when obstacles are put in their way. That doesn’t describe me. For me, it’s about a threat of some kind or, to be honest, having to deal with an annoying chore or task – like cleaning the bathroom, again – that makes me impatient.

I don’t like how impatience makes me think or how it scrambles my mind. I don’t like how it makes me sometimes say things that I wish I could take back or act in ways that I regret. My $900 scare and the distress it caused me could have been nipped in the bud had I responded differently, period.

I plan to take Jeremy Godwin’s wise words to heart: “Patience is a mindset. You get to choose what you do with your feelings, and so the more you learn how to be patient, the more you’ll be able to find greater peace of mind.”

And, then I am going to pursue these wise actions:

• Identify when I am experiencing the signs of impatience.

• Recognize my triggers – fear, annoyance and so on.

• Choose another emotion to shift to – calmness.

• Practice mindfulness – stay present, engaged and focused.

• Slow down – rushing only results in muddled thinking and frenetic action. It also causes me to break things!

• Take deep breaths when I’m in the midst of impatience.

• Put the situation in perspective – “stuff” happens from time to time. I will get through this!

ENSURING WATER SAFETY AT LAKE NORMAN IN JULY

Lake Norman, North Carolina’s largest man-made lake, becomes a bustling hub of activity every July. With its 520 miles of shoreline and expansive waters, it attracts boaters, swimmers, anglers, and families looking to enjoy summer fun. However, the increased traffic also raises concerns about water safety. Here’s a comprehensive guide to staying safe while enjoying Lake Norman’s waters in the peak of summer.

July at Lake Norman is synonymous with vibrant outdoor activities and picturesque views. As temperatures soar, the lake offers a refreshing escape. However, it’s crucial to prioritize safety to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable and incident-free experience. Understanding the potential risks and following safety guidelines can make all the difference.

BOATING SAFETY

Boating is one of the most popular activities on Lake Norman. To navigate the waters safely, boaters should adhere to the following guidelines:

• Wear Life Jackets: Life jackets are a must for everyone on board. North Carolina law mandates that children under 13 wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times while on a vessel.

• Follow Speed Limits: Observing speed limits is crucial, especially in designated no-wake zones. High speeds can lead to accidents, particularly in crowded areas.

• Avoid Alcohol: Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol is illegal and dangerous. Impaired judgment can result in severe accidents.

• Check Equipment: Ensure that your boat is equipped with essential safety gear, including fire extinguishers, lights, and sound-producing devices like whistles or horns.

• Stay Informed: Be aware of weather conditions and lake traffic. Sudden storms can create hazardous conditions, so it’s important to have a plan and seek shelter if needed.

SWIMMING SAFETY

Swimming in Lake Norman’s inviting waters is a highlight of summer. To stay safe, swimmers should:

• Swim in Designated Areas: Stick to designated swimming areas where boats are prohibited. These areas are typically marked by buoys or ropes.

• Supervise Children: Always keep a close watch on children when they are in or near the water. Even shallow water can pose a drowning risk.

• Avoid Swimming Alone: Use the buddy system to ensure someone can call for help if needed. Swimming alone increases the risk of drowning or other emergencies.

• Be Aware of Depths and Currents: Lake Norman has varying depths and occasional strong currents. Familiarize yourself with the swimming area and avoid diving into unknown waters to prevent injuries.

FISHING SAFETY

Anglers flock to Lake Norman for its abundant fish species. To fish safely:

• Wear a Life Jacket: Just like boaters, anglers should wear life jackets, especially when fishing from a boat or in deeper waters.

• Watch for Weather Changes: Summer storms can develop quickly. Be prepared to move to safety if conditions worsen.

• Handle Equipment Carefully: Use caution when handling hooks, lines, and other fishing gear to avoid injuries.

GENERAL TIPS

• Hydrate and Protect Against the Sun: Dehydration and sunburn are common during summer outings. Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen with a high SPF.

• Emergency Preparedness: Have a firstaid kit and emergency contact numbers on hand. Familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest medical facilities.

• Respect Wildlife: Lake Norman is home to various wildlife species. Observe from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural habitats.

July at Lake Norman offers endless opportunities for fun and relaxation. By adhering to safety guidelines, visitors can ensure a secure and enjoyable experience. Whether boating, swimming, or fishing, being vigilant and prepared enhances the adventure and helps create lasting memories. Enjoy the beauty and excitement of Lake Norman responsibly to make the most of your summer days on the water.

SUCCESSFUL ISF SHUCK CANCER EVENT RAISES OVER $44,000

The Isabella Santos Foundation (ISF) Shuck Cancer event, held at the Savannah Oyster Company on May 22, 2024, was a fun and transformative evening of community support. With over 150 attendees, the event raised more than $44,000, showcasing the generosity of the Lake Norman community in the fight against pediatric cancer. The event was co-chaired by a fantastic group of individuals, including Lisa and James Combs, Tana and Mike Greene, Jason Tuton, and Ginger and John Wagoner.

Jason Tuton, owner of Savannah Oyster Company, has been a steadfast supporter of ISF. This was the second time he hosted an event, with the first being at Barrel and Fork, where they raised just over $36,000. His commitment to ISF and its mission is evident not only through hosting these events but also through his numerous sponsorships for various ISF activities and his membership in the Three Wish Society. Reflecting on the success of the event, Tuton remarked:

“I’ve been involved with ISF for about seven years now, and I’ve watched from afar and up close the incredible impact they are making on the quality of life for the child patient and their families. It’s an unbelievable daily undertaking and mandates absolute participation from the communities in which it operates. At its very essence, it’s the community helping its children. I can’t think of anything more important. As a long-time Lake Norman resident and business owner, it’s been a passion of mine to bring awareness and gain support from this incredible community for this cause. I believe we are

just now scratching the surface of what this community can truly do to impact ISF and, ultimately, pediatric cancer.”

Jason Tuton’s involvement serves as a reminder of how the business community can actively engage in communityfocused causes. As Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month approaches in September, ISF is launching a 30-day campaign providing numerous ways for individuals and businesses to support the mission. This initiative is a testament to ISF’s ongoing efforts to rally community support and ensure that every child battling cancer has access to the best possible care and treatment.

Since its inception in 2007, the Isabella Santos Foundation has been at the forefront of the battle against rare pediatric cancers. To date, ISF has raised over $14 million towards expanding research and treatment options, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow for families fighting cancer. Their commitment to establishing the Carolinas as a global hub for children with solid tumors and rare cancers is evident as they fund more cutting-edge treatments and compassionate care across North and South Carolina through the TORCH Initiative.

As ISF continues to grow and expand its reach, the steadfast support from the business community and individual philanthropists, such as Jason Tuton and the event co-chairs, serves as a powerful reminder that our local communities can play a part in creating transformational outcomes for rare cancer heroes.

A BOW of GALLANTRY

When it comes to the South, summertime heat can seem nearly unbearable, but that doesn’t mean your style has to suffer. The world’s best fabric mills work diligently to continually develop the latest innovations in textiles. Whether it’s an ultralight cotton blend or a moisturewicking performance cloth, the clothing we wear has come a long way in a short time. Even through all of these updates and improvements, nothing will keep you cooler on a hot day than tried-and-true pure linen.

It may not have the softest hand or most luxurious feel initially, but don’t let that fool you; this cloth ages like a fine bourbon. Its wrinkled appearance irks the nerves of many, but the wrinkling is truly a function of the fabric: much like seersucker, it lifts the cloth off of the skin and creates “channels” for air to flow, keeping you cool and dry. It’s like wearing an air conditioner.

Keeping cool pertains to more than just temperature, though… summer is the perfect opportunity to showcase your mastery of sprezzatura, or a nonchalant, effortless style. It’s the art of subtle sophistication while giving the appearance of a relaxed, natural ease. A brightly colored linen shirt unbuttoned one or two lower than you normally may, untucked with the sleeves rolled up, shorts or pants comfortably loose through the legs, and white sneakers with a few scuffs on them are all perfect examples of sprezzatura. You know the look, you can pull it off, and trust me… your wife will love it.

Another upside to this particular look is that body shape isn’t overly important. Since the style calls for looser, easier fits, it’s flattering for most figures. I hear a lot of guys (especially with larger builds) say they want lighter fabrics because they’re hot-natured, but lighter isn’t always better. The lighter in weight a fabric is, the more clingy and susceptible to showing outlines it will be. You don’t need the build of a model to look like one- the drape of the garments will create a shape which works for you while the breathability will keep the temperature down.

There’s really just one rule here: under no circumstance should you wear an undershirt with linen. This not only defeats the purpose, but looks completely out of place, combating the aforementioned effortless style.

I hear a lot of objections to linen in the store, mostly that “it wrinkles so easily.” It does, but as I said before, that’s part of the function of the fabric itself. It’s expected and accepted with linen. This isn’t your dress shirt you’re wearing to work, needing proper pressing to look the part… this is your shirt to wear casually with the open collar and sleeves rolled up, out to dinner after a day on the water, or on any of your weekend adventures when the weather’s warm. If you haven’t tried linen before, give it a shot! Swing by Hampton’s on Mooresville’s Main Street and try one on. As Steve McQueen demonstrates here, summertime has never felt so cool.

They do 1:1 care with your dog, so there aren’t multiple dogs in multiple phases of care. Hank wasn’t nervous with her at all! She even texted me an update during the session to alleviate my worries. Hank will be a ‘member’ of the Canine Country Club from now on! Thank you, Haley!” - KELLI W.

“Haley did an amazing job with our almost three-year-old rottweiler! He came home smelling amazing and brought some gorgeous photos she snapped while having him. I definitely recommend their services. Great communication and customer service, not to mention Dyablo loved her!” - SABRINA L.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT LEVELS AT WORK

Which of the following are examples of acknowledgement?

• “Hey, how’re you doin’?”

• “That was awesome!”

• “You are incredible.”

They all are because acknowledgement comes in several shapes, sizes and forms. For example:

• “Hey, how’re you doin’?” describes being noticed by someone.

• “That was awesome!” describes being recognized for something you did.

• “You are incredible.” describes the least common form of acknowledgement – being appreciated for who you are.

For managers and coworkers alike, each of these has its place at work. Here’s a deeper dive:

When you use an “I Notice You” acknowledgement, you are saying “I recognize your presence or existence.” It’s a microsecond glance, a wave of a hand or a quick flash of a smile and

communicates that you see them and are connecting with them, instead of ignoring them. It’s the most fundamental expression of respect that one human extends to another.

Acknowledgement at this level is a simple human courtesy. You might even say it’s decency, or common sense – and I would agree. However, in workplaces where people report feeling shunned, dismissed or disrespected, they often cite the absence of this basic human form of acknowledgement. This “missed opportunity” is especially disturbing to employees when leaders – you know, the people whose example they are expected to follow – fail to acknowledge them. When human beings at work are not “noticed,” they feel disrespected. That’s when a dangerous spiral is set into motion. Their anger becomes hurt, and their hurt contributes to feeling disengaged which is why they often check out emotionally. When we fail to acknowledge by noticing, we make people feel “invisible” while demonstrating a fundamental lack of respect for them.

When you use an “I Recognize You” acknowledgement, you are calling out something specific someone did or contributed. You might say “Thank you, I appreciate what you did.” You might “package” that acknowledgement and gratitude in spoken words, a note, an email or a text. Or maybe that recognition takes the form of a plaque, certificate, money or gift card.

Here’s something to think about – research estimates that approximately 50,000 thoughts go through our heads each day and that, on average, 80% of them are negative. Some of these thoughts are directed internally, in the form of “negative self-talk.” With that much ugly happening on the inside, it’s little wonder that genuine acknowledgement has a strong, positive effect on us and matters in a big way!

In fact, it drives both engagement and performance! Case in point – one of the top six attributes of leaders of high performing teams is that their employees said “yes” to this question: “In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for good work?”

Now here’s a curious and disturbing twist – even in workplaces where recognition is practiced and celebrated, leaders don’t always practice “acknowledging by noticing.” And that’s what employees notice. In other words, if you acknowledge me by recognizing me, but you fail to acknowledge me by noticing me, you are sending a mixed message, and that impacts trust.

When you use an “I Appreciate You” acknowledgement, you are shining a light on someone’s fundamental worth and value. This is the deepest and most profound form of acknowledgement because it goes beyond noticing and is unattached to a specific reason for recognizing. It tells the other person that you have respect for something special about him or her – a gift, strength, quality or characteristic that makes that person who he or she is. And, it has nothing to do with “what you did for me lately.”

So, where are you? Is there a level of acknowledgement that is a strength for you? Where is your opportunity?

OUR JOURNEY TO PARENTHOOD: THE ROLLER COASTER OF INFERTILITY

Parenthood is such a wild ride, isn’t it? I’ve heard all kinds of stories about the many joys and challenges of parenthood, but what I never heard much about from anyone is their journey to becoming parents. For many, the journey goes exactly as it was intended to go. You know, the birds and the bees sort of deal; However, for some folks, the journey to parenthood is a roller coaster. The thing about this kind of roller coaster is, you don’t know when the next drop will be, and you don’t know if it will ever end; and if it does end, will you step off that ride glad you rode it or vowing to never go on one again? I consider my husband and myself a couple of the lucky ones…we rode the roller coaster and, when we got off of it, it was worth all the twists, turns and drops because it gave us our son.

Do you ever have a gut feeling about something not going as planned and then it turns out to be true?

A few years back I had a gut feeling that my dream of becoming pregnant and being a mama might not shake out the way I hoped it would. I had been sitting with that fear for quite some time actually, but it became more pronounced as my wedding date approached. I was two weeks shy of my 30th birthday when I got married, and our plan was to begin trying to conceive right away. Our thought process was, why not? We’re as ready as we’ll ever

be. And, we were. We had spent our dating years adventuring all over the western United States, going to concerts, car camping and all the things you “can’t do with children” (or at least not as easily). We had recently purchased our first home together. We had giddily talked about which room would be the nursery and how cool it would be for our first child to be born in Colorado, being that we are both Missouri natives. As we optimistically planned our future out loud together, that gut feeling crept in again and I silently wondered, would it be that easy? It wasn’t.

Continued on page 58.

After the first six months of trying for a baby, I went to my first doctor appointment. At my appointment, I was told it could take time, not to worry and to come back in another six months if I still hadn’t become pregnant. So, back home I went, trying to ignore that gut feeling that had been lingering for months. I chose to be hopeful every day for a whole year and, overall, I was. I never did shake my gut feeling, but I also tried not to pay it any attention. It’s not like I wanted it to be true, and I certainly didn’t want to give it power it didn’t deserve. Within the following six months, my husband landed a job that would move us out of the Denver, CO area to Mooresville, NC. I thought maybe once we got to Mooresville, then we’d get pregnant. Surely it was only a timing thing, and once we finally planted some roots, we’d get pregnant. So, after trying for 15 months, I went to the doctor again, this time in Mooresville. We did some general blood tests and, for the most part, everything came back normal. We began some lowlevel interventions, but after a few months of no change, we asked to be referred to a fertility clinic, which landed us at REACH Fertility Center. Though we were grateful and anxious to hopefully get some answers, being referred to REACH also meant we now had to face our new reality – the roller coaster we found ourselves on was one of infertility.

Stay tuned for the next part of our story in next month’s issue!

Dear Dr. Keith,

I’m a 32-year-old man who’s struggling with motivation and attitude at work. I’ve been with my company for more than five years. When I started, they promised plenty of opportunity to move up within the organization with yearly performance reviews, competitive salaries and good benefits. I thought this was a company I could grow with, and my intention was to stay with them for the long term. Things were great for the first few years, and I was happy with the direction my career was headed, however, I had higher aspirations. A little more than a year ago, they offered me what I thought would be my dream job, Director of Marketing and Advertising. I would become the leader and mentor of a team of five creative, ego driven individuals that struggled to get along with their prior director. He eventually left the company, and the position became available. I had proved myself to be a valued member of the team, so my bosses had confidence in my ability to lead them and I was offered the job. I asked if there would be an increase in my salary to compensate for my increase in responsibility, and their answer was that they would evaluate me in six months to see how I was doing. Here’s my issue. It’s been more than a year with no evaluation, no raise, double the work and having to deal with a lot of my team’s personal and professional drama. I’ve asked management multiple times when we can meet to discuss a raise, and I keep getting put off. To make matters worse, they’ve replaced a couple of people on my team and hired them at a higher salary than mine. I’m exhausted, frustrated, angry and ready to quit. I’m not sure what to do. Please help.

ASK DR. KEITH

Hey Steve,

I’m sorry for your frustration. Unfortunately, this type of situation is not uncommon in the corporate world. You described yourself and your team as creative, ego driven individuals. Companies will prey on that ego by offering management positions with titles; President, Vice- President, Director, etc. That position and title will come with an office, your name and designation on the door, a nameplate on your desk and, if you’re lucky, a nice plant in the corner. Frequently, it requires twice the work with no extra money and a promise for a raise in the future based on performance. This is not unusual because the title on our office door and business cards strokes our ego and makes us feel important, so most people accept the position without considering the future ramifications. Be careful to not react to your negative feelings, that’s when we make poor choices. It’s important to participate in enjoyable activities outside of work to help you stay calm, recharge and respond positively to your situation until you choose to change it. In relationships, both personal and professional, we have three choices: If you don’t like the behavior of some members of your team, model the behavior you want changed or accept the situation as is, feeling underpaid and underappreciated, or leave. However, if you choose to leave your current company, make sure you have another opportunity already lined up. It’s easier to find a job when you’re already employed. You want to avoid any impulse to quit and bring chaos into your life. Which stress would you rather have, having a job that’s not ideal, but pays the bills or quitting your job and having no income to pay your bills? Something to ponder. In the meantime, be patient while preparing for your journey, to find a new job…

MASTERING ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

As a former organizational coach, I was privileged to listen to deeply moving and inspiring stories about people from all walks of life who practiced the “I really see you” level of acknowledgement. Most of us have had the experience of being seen for who we are and who we could be, and we know the priceless quality of this perception. This is especially the case when we are struggling or going through a difficult period in our lives or at work. I love the words of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Albert Schweitzer whose eloquence and depth of understanding speak to this level of acknowledgement:

“At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”

This level of “feedback” might make you a tad uncomfortable because it seems too “personal.” I see it differently. The hundreds of stories I’ve listened to tell me that supervisors, mentors and even co-workers can and do play a significant role in “rekindling the spark.” Think about it – when we fail to “see” the people we work with for their unique gifts, strengths, qualities and characteristics, we miss a huge opportunity to express the kind of respect that deepens relationships and strengthens contribution.

Levels of Acknowledgement: A Deeper Dive

At its core, acknowledgement is about paying attention and being attentive. It is also about cultivating a deeper, more intentional level of awareness. Let’s see what this looks like at each level.

Level 1: I Notice You

• Practice being aware of any and everyone who enters your visual field.

• Hold yourself to an “I notice you” standard – extend some verbal or non-verbal signal that says, “Yes, I know you are there” to everyone in your workplace.

• Sharpen your awareness antennae by “noticing” outside of work. That guy who is trying to make a turn in front of you? Let him in. That cashier who hands you your receipt? Make eye contact, smile and thank him or her.

Level 2: I Recognize You

• Be sure that your recognition is sincere, specific and true.

• Maximize the power of informal recognition – say “thank you” for specific contributions – verbally and virtually – at every opportunity. This also includes acknowledging phone, text and email messages, as in “Got the info on the XYZ research from you; thanks, it will help a lot.” Also use symbolic forms of recognition that are appropriate to your culture.

• If you don’t have any formal recognition in place, get together with others to see what would be appropriate to your work culture and what can be done.

• Show respect by asking the people you work with what forms of recognition they would appreciate.

Level 3: I Appreciate You

Take a few moments to focus individually on each of your coworkers. Ask yourself what you “see” in them. Consider their unique gifts, strengths, qualities and characteristics. I love this quote from writer and counselor Rusty Berkus: “There comes that mysterious meeting in life when someone acknowledges who we are and what we can be, igniting the circuits of our highest potential.” Here are a few “seeing statements” that employees shared with me from the “Level Three Acknowledgers” in their lives:

• “You have an incredible fire in your belly!”

• “Your compassion for people is boundless.”

• “You set a standard for professionalism that I marvel at.”

• “Nothing will ever keep you down.”

• “You have the gift of patience.”

• “You will accomplish everything you set out to do.”

• “I believe in you.”

Culture of Acknowledgement

When you master acknowledgement at every level, you express a deep level of respect for who others are, what they do and the difference that they make. You become the example to follow when you “walk the talk” acknowledgement.

Hats off to the LKN Magazine staff who do a brilliant job of walking the talk of acknowledgement. Thank you!

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE – TATTOO

What do you think of when someone says TATTOO? For me it is permanently marking the skin with some sort of pattern. We were invited to attend a Tattoo, so this definition didn’t fit. I looked in the dictionary and found a TATTOO is also a signal on a drum, bugle or trumpet at night for soldiers or sailors to return to their barracks. In other words, turn off the taps, quite down and go to sleep. I understood that, but I still didn’t know how it fit in the scheme of things.

TWILIGHT TATTOO and I quote, “is a time-honored tradition that blends the precision and discipline of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) with the superb musical prowess of The U. S. Army Band “Perishing’s Own.” The history of Twilight Tattoo began more than 300 years ago as British troops were summoned from the warmth and hospitality of local pubs by a bugle and drum call to return to the barracks. The familiar tune told tavern owners “doe den tap toe” or “time to turn off the taps.” The troops knew the call meant “taps off,” and minutes later they were back in their tents.

Washington revived the show in 1961 to showcase the talents of Soldiers from the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The U.S. Army Drill Team, the Commander-in-Chief’s Guard, the Continental Color Guard, the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon, the Presidential Salute Battery, and the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” Twilight demonstrates that U.S. Army history is America’s history. Showcasing musical and military ceremonial excellence, Twilight Tattoo salutes the service and honors the sacrifice of Soldiers and their Families, past and present. The Soldier-led theatrical vignettes illustrate the unlimited possibilities that exist in the U.S. Army and inspires audiences to be all you can be.”

The modern-day call is known as “Tattoo,” and during basic training, the call signals the time to quiet down and hit the bunks. For the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, the call serves as a tribute dedicated to the vitality of our nation and to the sacrifices of those who forged America into the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Today’s Twilight Tattoo dates to the years before World War II. The U.S. Army Military District of

You know that if it is done by the U.S. Army, it is done right. This is held for a limited time and outdoors on the parade grounds. But it rained, and they had enough time to move the event indoors. It looked like an ice-skating rink, felt like one also, with seats for about 5,000. Every seat was taken, and some guests were in chairs on the main floor. About a third of the group were students.

It was a fantastic affair, with all the activities mentioned. But I thought the precision team where they toss their rifles to their partner was outstanding.

My quote from their flyer tells the story, but it doesn’t say how proud it makes you feel, to be an American. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

SHARING FAITH ACROSS THE COUNTRY BIBLES IN SCHOOLS

A simple, heartfelt conversation with one of her second grade students sent teacher Hannah Sailsbury in a life-changing, purposeful direction, founding the non-profit group Bibles in Schools in 2019.

Even before the organization was officially launched, hundreds of people were praying for this initiative. By the end of April 2023, it had reached a major milestone of donating Bibles to schools in all 50 states!

“My students inspired me,” shares Hannah. “I saw how much they wanted to read the Bible, and then I saw the impact of having an engaging Bible available in the school library.”

After rallying a team of friends, family and people from her church, Hannah and the group donated The Action Storybook Bible to each of the 38 public elementary school libraries in their county. She witnessed her students enthusiastically reading the books and saw them sharing about Jesus with their friends, families and other teachers.

“Literally, right in front of my eyes, I was seeing Jesus being spread throughout my school and community!” she adds.

With a degree in education from Liberty University, Hannah was a special education teacher for eight years in Virginia before leaving her position in 2021 to devote her full attention and energy to the growing mission. She is passionate about sharing God’s word and, having traveled to 20 countries, is thankful for the experiences of travel and teaching that have helped strengthen her faith.

Continued from page 70.

“It inspires me because I try to live by the words ‘do for one what you wish you can do for everyone’ – and there are many students longing to read the Bible; we just need to make it available,” she adds.

The Action Bible – Heroes and Villains introduces children to more than 75 Bible characters, sharing their backgrounds, occupations and personalities – along with both their strengths and their failings. Through those pages, young readers receive historical background and a guide to ancient and modern-day locations told through diagrams, stories and fun facts – with lots of adventure along the way.

Illustrated with a captivating modern artwork style, The Action Bible – Heroes and Villains is the most complete adventure Bible ever created, and it appeals both visually and intellectually to today’s young students. It’s the perfect format and voice for students.

The group’s core goals are simple, yet powerful:

• Every public school library in the United States will have engaging Bibles on their shelves.

• Students and their families will be transformed by the Bible and will come to have a personal relationship with Jesus.

• People would be educated on their rights within the public schools, so they can live out their faith boldly.

Teachers and school librarians are encouraged to leave feedback on the Bibles in Schools website, and visitors can also reach out to see if the group has donated within their school system; or, if a need still exists, where they could become involved.

For more information, call 804.638.9624, email info@ biblesinschools.org and visit biblesinschools.org for more details specifically for librarians, teachers, volunteers and anyone interested in joining the Bibles in Schools prayer team. Bibles in Schools is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

JOYFUL JOURNEY

RENDEZVOUS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

At the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Rendezvous Mountain State Park is an out-of-the-way destination in North Carolina’s extensive network of state parks. This park, rich in history and natural beauty, offers limited recreational activities, but is an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This is one of my most visited state parks along with Stone Mountain State Park, because I have been visiting these parks regularly since I was a child.

Rendezvous Mountain State Park spans over 1,800 acres in Wilkes County, North Carolina. It is renowned for its lush forests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking views. The park is named after the mountain that rises to an elevation of 2,460 feet, offering visitors panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. This natural sanctuary provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life and a chance to connect with nature.

BRIEF HISTORY

The history of Rendezvous Mountain is as rich as its natural landscape. During the American Revolutionary War, the mountain served as a strategic meeting point for the Overmountain Men, a militia who played a crucial role in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. The name “Rendezvous Mountain” is derived from this historical gathering. It was originally established as North Carolina’s third state park. From 1984 to early 2022, the

park was operated by the North Carolina Forest Service as Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest.

RECREATION ACTIVITIES

Rendezvous Mountain State Park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking is one of the most popular pursuits, with several trails of varying difficulty levels. The 2.5mile Rendezvous Mountain Loop Trail is a favorite, taking hikers through dense forests and offering stunning views from the summit. The Forest Demonstration Trail is currently closed for renovation, but the Talking Tree Trail is open with wayside exhibits for reading, but the wayside audio is no longer in service.

Birdwatching is another popular activity, as the park is home to a diverse array of bird species, including hawks, owls, and warblers. The park’s varied habitats support an abundance of wildlife, making it a prime location for nature photography.

In addition to hiking and picnicking, the park provides opportunities for educational programs and guided tours. These programs, often led by park rangers, cover topics such as the history of the Overmountain Men, local flora and fauna, and conservation efforts.

UNIQUE FEATURES

One of the park’s most unique features is its historical significance. The

Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, which traces the route of the Revolutionary War militia, passes through the park. This trail offers a tangible connection to the past, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of American patriots.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

As the day draws to a close at Rendezvous Mountain State Park, the atmosphere transforms into a tranquil haven. The setting sun casts a golden glow over the landscape, and the sounds of wildlife preparing for the night fill the air. Visitors often find a quiet spot to reflect on the day’s adventures or gather around a picnic table to share stories and meals.

Rendezvous Mountain State Park is full of natural beauty and historical significance. Whether you’re hiking to the summit for a breathtaking view, exploring the historical trails, or simply enjoying a picnic with family, the park’s unique natural beauty is inviting.. Its unique features and serene environment make it a beautiful destination. A day spent at Rendezvous Mountain State Park is a day well spent, leaving visitors with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Rendezvous Mountain State Park is located at 1956 Rendezvous Mountain Road Purlear, NC 28665. For more information and park hours contact them at rendezvous.mountain@ncparks.gov or call the park office at 336-667-5072.

LAKE CARS

The first car I owned was a 1992 Chevy Cavalier that I got through a trade for a pair of skis. It had a big dent in the door, and its previous owner wanted to donate it to a charity; but, he saw how much paperwork he’d have to fill out to give it away, and I struck a deal for a pair of skis I had sitting in my bedroom. It gave me a few problems, but I got a repair book on it from the library and was able to fix the minor issues without too many issues. After I’d had it for a year or so, we got a big snowstorm in Minneapolis. I misread the parking signs and put it on the wrong side of the street for the snowplows, and it ended up getting towed. I couldn’t afford to get it out of the tow lot, but the guy who worked there let me get my toolbox out of the trunk, and that was the last I saw of it.

A few years later, I bought a 1994 Buick LeSabre off my friend Travis for about $1,200. It was an upgrade from my two door, sporty Cavalier to a luxury vehicle. I drove it around the country, including a long stint in Utah going up and down the canyons and mountains, and the only maintenance it ever needed, besides oil changes, were brakes and tires. It survived a crash with a large deer on a forest service road at about midnight but never fully recovered. The dents rusted a bit, and I never replaced the grill, but one person noticed it as a diamond in the rough and offered about $500 for it after I’d left it parked at my parents’ house when I moved to New York.

The third and last car that I bought was a 2012 Lexus SUV off my parents. I took it to New York and paid a small fortune to keep it in a parking garage where it would sit, sometimes for more than a month, without being driven. Then, I’d go to get it to run to kids’ swim lessons or something on the other side of town, and the battery would be dead. The keyless entry wouldn’t work since the battery was dead, and the key also wouldn’t open the door due to a dealer snafu when their mechanics replaced the door handle assembly incorrectly a few years earlier. So, I joined AAA on my phone and then called them to come help me five minutes later. They overlooked this odd coincidence and helped me out, and I’ve been a grateful member since.

Now, we’re on our way back to the lake after some travel and again don’t have a car. Thanks to our family and some creative horse trading, I think we’ve sorted out that we’ll be driving my brother-in-law, Chris’, car while we’re in town. He’s the same one who’s been watching our maniacal (but lovable) dog Charlie while we’ve been away. His car may not be as sporty as my two door, manual transmission, faded-fire-engine-red Cavalier or as luxurious as my float-on-air LeSabre, but I sure do appreciate all he’s done for us – thanks Chris!
