Welcome to our September issue! This month is always extra special because it’s our anniversary issue – we are celebrating 18 years of Forsyth Woman this month! This particular anniversary is even more special because we are also celebrating the 1st anniversary of our newest sister publication, LKN Magazine!

I want to set the scene for my current surroundings as I’m writing this. It’s mid-August, and I’m on an island off the coast of Maine. It’s a cool 63 degrees and the views are incredible. I’m writing this while sitting across from my mom and am feeling an immense amount of gratitude. I don’t travel often, so I’m really soaking it all in!

We quite literally couldn’t do it without you and are forever grateful.

In honor of our anniversary issue, I want to share a few fun facts about Forsyth Woman:

- Our first issue (published in September 2005) featured news anchor Cindy Farmer on the cover! It was 26 pages and partially black and white.

- Forsyth Woman’s popular Girls’ Night Out (GNO) events have been held monthly since January 2009.

- We changed our logo in November 2018.

- The Forsyth Magazines podcast debuted in 2020, and we’ve released more than 160 episodes!

- The “Women on the Move” column (our longestrunning column) inspired the launch of our largest event! Our Women on the Move Conference kicked off in 2022. Save the date for March 25th, 2024!

- Keela Johnson, founder of Forsyth Woman, had zero publishing experience when FW began 18 years ago. Today, she resides with her husband at Lake Norman and is one year into publishing LKN Magazine.

While a lot has changed over the last 18 years, one thing has remained the same – our mission of connecting our local community through positively inspired, community-focused content. THANK YOU to our amazing readers for allowing us to bring you this magazine each month. THANK YOU to the many businesses who trust us with your marketing dollars.

We’re thrilled to feature Anitra Mitchell, owner of LoveWell Boutique on our cover this month. Anitra was one of my first accounts when I started working full time for the magazine back in 2012, and I’ve grown to know and love her so much over the last 11 years! She has built quite an amazing team – we should all be taking notes on her leadership skills. You can read all about Anitra and LoveWell boutique on page 44. And, you’re going to want to see the adorable recreation of her cover from 10 years ago!

In addition to reading this magazine, there are other ways you can connect with us! Subscribe to our monthly newsletter (head to forsythwoman. com), follow us on social media @forsythmags, tune in to a Forsyth Magazines podcast episode (available on Spotify, Apple Podcast and all major streaming platforms) and consider attending one of our many events! Girls’ Night Out events happen monthly, our annual Tour de Boutique is coming up October 7th and our Women on the Move Conference will be in March 2024.

Wishing you an amazing month!

With an Exciting New Makeup Line - the Passion Continues! Aeracura Salon & Spa

Embracing all the feels of positive energy, the ongoing spirit of rejuvenation, and only the most natural elements, Aeracura Salon — an Aveda salon — is excited to be launching a new makeup line this September.

Christi Bradham, Owner and Master Stylist, shares the excitement of offering Smashbox, known for its unsurpassed quality, at both the original location in Historic Reynolda Village, and the newer location, Aeracura Salon and Spa West in the heart of Clemmons.

In keeping with Aveda’s always 100% naturally derived products, Smashbox is a high-quality, Los Angeles-based makeup brand founded by the greatgrandsons of Hollywood makeup legend, Max Factor. Designed for professional makeup artists, the line was actually created in a Los Angeles photo studio, with an emphasis on achieving flawless, camera-ready looks. It’s been the go-to for professional makeup artists for over 25 years.

Smashbox’s formulas align with Aveda’s mission to never include parabens, phthalates, or fragrances, and to always be 100% cruelty-free. Smashbox does not test on animals, nor do they sell their makeup products in countries who require it.

“Incorporating natural ingredients such as avocado oil, green tea, and goji berry, Smashbox’s products will complement existing Aveda makeup favorites, and give us so many options to experiment!” explains Christi. “We’re excited to have something new to offer our clients.”

Christi also loves the Smashbox commitment to only using sustainable packaging, reducing waste, and minimizing their impact on the environment.

Here’s what you’ll want to know about the new line: One of the leading Smashbox products is the Studio Skin 24 Hydra Foundation, available in a wide range of shades, and infused with hyaluronic acid for a nourishing, hydrating effect. Another standout in the new collection is Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer — their number one bestseller — which minimizes pores to create a smooth, even base for makeup application. Smashbox primers are revered in the makeup industry for their ability to create a silky, flawless base for foundation and other makeup products. Their primers

are also designed to address specific skin concerns, such as minimizing pores, controlling oil, and reducing redness. Formulated with high-quality ingredients that improve the longevity and appearance of makeup, they also nourish and protect the skin. Smashbox primers are lightweight and nongreasy, allowing for easy application and comfortable wear — the absolute perfect choice for anyone looking to achieve long-lasting, professionallevel makeup looks.

With the renewed energy of the fall season approaching, and the excitement of a new makeup line, Christi also loves recognizing the amazing folks in her “tribe”- the incredible Aeracura team of stylists!

“Within our Aeracura tribe we have several master stylists, and I want to point out four of them specifically, who have been with Aeracura Salon for six years!” says Christi. “I’m especially proud of Amanda Morris and Clara Myers at our Clemmons location, and Krista Crafton and Maddie Marrs at our Reynolda location. It’s been a great accomplishment to watch them learn and grow as artists in their craft, and in their careers. They have worked so hard over the years, through all the ups and downs, and I wanted to give them a little shout-out to show my appreciation!”

Christi admits she’s impressed every single day as she spends time at each Aeracura location, watching each individual talent bloom — from budding new stylists, to the experienced masters. “Our mission is to wholeheartedly support each other as a large family,” she adds. “It’s a tight-knit group, and I am grateful for them all! Every person in our tribe has a true love and passion for making our guests look and feel their very best!”

Turning the page to a new season, you’ll feel the love and light as always, during every visit at each Aeracura salon. Christi and her cherished tribe of true beauty specialists can’t wait to introduce you to Smashbox!

Visit Aeracura Salon at 101A Reynolda Village, Winston-Salem, NC, 336448–0792, or Aeracura Salon & Spa at 6265 Town Center Drive, Clemmons, NC, 336-448-2044. Follow them online at aeracurasalon.com, and on Instagram @aeracurasalon. Salon hours at both locations are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m, and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Keeping It Real PHANTOM FEAR

I’m no wildlife expert, but even I know gazelles lope like lightning! Did you realize a gazelle can sprint up to 60 miles per hour?! That’s twice as fast as any human on record. (I looked it up!)

In fact, only cheetahs have what it takes to surpass gazelles. But even these bad boys rarely devour gazelles, because gazelles outwit them. They change directions lightning-fast during the chase to destabilize the cat’s speed. (Genius!)

Besides that, gazelles possess endurance that leaves cheetahs in their dust. It’s easy-peasy to outlast their stalker.

It’s safe to say gazelles carry an unfair advantage against most predators in the wild. Not even the king of the jungle can touch them…or, can he?

Gazelles often race together. But get this - if a gazelle catches a glimpse of a lion staring her down from the bushes as the herd sprints by, that terrorizing glare can halt the swifter one dead in her tracks!

This creature with the capacity to outrun, outwit, AND outlast the predator stands paralyzed by phantom fear. The lion’s intimidation settles on that isolated one like a straitjacket. Then that enemy doesn’t have to lift a single claw!

The swift-hoofed gazelle moving with the pack had no reason to freeze, no reason to fear the lesser one. But when her feet stilled and

her fear skyrocketed, she actually emboldened her enemy to make her worst fears become reality! Her tomorrows…devoured!

Listen friend, the enemy of your soul IS the lesser one! God has given you EVERYTHING you need to outwit, outlast, and completely overpower the one who stalks you LIKE a growling lion.

The Scriptures describe him like this: “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around LIKE a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT)

Y’all, his bark is so much bigger than his bite! He only wins if we let him! FOR REAL!

This enemy that seeks to terrorize and ultimately devour you has nothing going in his favor—unless you isolate yourself from those running in the same direction AND let your eyes lock onto his!

If you are moving in God and God is moving in you, the enemy cannot catch you! He cannot outwit you, and he surely cannot overpower you.

I don’t know what you are facing in this season. But stay with the pack that outruns the enemy and keep running! Keep going in God! Run with fear if you must. Run with fright that makes your knees knock if you have to! But whatever you do, don’t stop and surely don’t stay. Just keep going in God and leave the enemy in your dust! I tell you the truth when I tell you . . . YOU CARRY THE UNFAIR ADVANTAGE!

DELIVERING EXPERT VEIN CARE

So You Can Thrive

Novant Health Vein

Specialists PA talks about chronic venous insufficiency

September is National Vascular Disease Awareness Month and it’s a great time to remember that strong veins are essential for an overall healthy life.

As the only vein clinic in the Triad staffed entirely by vascular surgeons and supported by a strong team of physician assistants, Novant Health Vein Specialists can offer state-of-the-art technology and individualized treatments to help you address painful and unsightly veins. This month, we caught up with the newest PA, Samantha Abbott, who provided great information about venous insufficiency and how she and her team can help you.

MEET SAMANTHA ABBOTT, PA

Samantha, a graduate of the University of Florida and an avid runner, loved the idea of moving to North Carolina to be close to the mountains. Although she considered the field of public health, an experience with EMT school told her she was more suited for hands-on care. She admires the culture at Novant Health, where everyone is approachable, focused solely on quality care, and committed to helping people thrive.

FW: What is venous insufficiency and how do you diagnose it?

SAMANTHA: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a form of vascular disease that occurs when the veins in your legs are damaged. As a result, these veins can’t manage blood flow as well as they should, and it’s difficult for blood in your legs to return to your heart. CVI causes blood to pool within your leg veins, leading to high pressure in those veins. In short, blood is flowing in the wrong direction, as valves may open to let blood go up your leg, then quickly close so it can’t go backward.

This high venous pressure can make more valves weaken and malfunction. Chronic venous insufficiency can cause damage to your deep veins, which are large veins deep in your body that run through your muscle, superficial veins, which are close to the skin’s surface, and perforating veins, which connect your deep and

16 | ForsythWoman.com

superficial veins. CVI may also be a sign you have a blood clot deep in your leg, a condition called a deep vein thrombosis or DVT.

Symptoms may include a dull, achy pain, and swelling that gets worse throughout the day. We also tell patients to look for hyperpigmentation on ankles or feet, or a wound (ulcer) that comes out of nowhere.

Fortunately, venous insufficiency is easy to diagnose using ultrasound that is performed by a licensed and accredited technician. It’s important to seek the help of vascular surgeons from the beginning, rather than receive a diagnosis deemed cosmetic, and typically not covered by insurance. At Novant Health Vein Specialists, our providers are trained to do it all.

FW: What are the most common causes of venous insufficiency?

SAMANTHA: First, it is important to note that more than 25 million individuals in the United States experience some form of vein disease. And we’ve found that it’s more common in women, especially after multiple pregnancies, and in people middle-aged or older.

The causes of venous insufficiency and varicose veins largely depend on genetics, and yes, a tendency towards varicose veins does run in families. The condition can also occur post-pregnancy, or from long periods of sitting or standing as fluid literally backs up when your legs are hanging down. We often see this condition in teachers, factory shift workers, construction workers and even dancers, where people are standing for hours.

Excess weight and leading a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to vein issues — but a program of regular walking, even if it’s just around your neighborhood, can help improve the health of your veins.

FW: What are some treatment options available at Novant Health Vein Specialists?

SAMANTHA: I tell my patients that they don’t have to live with painful or unsightly veins. There are several options, and surgery is not always necessary. While chronic venous disease is incurable, it is treatable with medications, sclerotherapy, phlebectomy or radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

RFA, also known as endovenous laser therapy, uses heat energy to seal the walls of the vein together, causing them to collapse and eventually disappear, allowing blood to be diverted to other healthy veins in the leg. Once the diseased vein is closed off, healthy veins take over and effectively empty blood from your legs. Sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider veins, done with injections in 15-minute sessions — with ultrasound guidance — where veins literally dry up, and the coloring of the vein fades or disappears. For veins that are too small for ablation or too large for sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy is an option.

FW: What advice do you have to help alleviate vein issues?

SAMANTHA: It’s important to elevate your legs whenever possible and limit long periods of sitting and standing. If you’ll be taking a long trip, consider wearing compression socks to keep blood from pooling around your feet and causing swelling.

You can also have your veins checked regularly. Novant Health Vein Specialists offers a free monthly screening in our Winston-Salem location. The remaining dates for 2023 include Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 7.

Screening can actually save your life — and at the very least, improve your quality of life. To schedule your free vein screening appointment, or to learn more about venous insufficiency, visit SalemVeins.com, or call us at 336-776-3160.

The Lessons We Can Learn from this Musical Genre THIS IS COUNTRY

music

There is an old saying that whatever happens in your life, there is a country song that goes with it. Filled with string harmonies from banjos, fiddles, and guitars, as well as folk lyrics, country music first appeared in the music scene in the early 1920s with the first commercial country record by Eck Robertson in 1922; however, it has been dated back to recordings of Southern Appalachian fiddle players in the late 1910s. According to statistics gathered from multiple music streaming sites, such as Spotify, country music is today the fifth most popular genre of music worldwide. With a huge popularity comes the long list of hundreds of thousands of songs that capture just about every moment and situation in life.

The lyrics of country music songs are written either like a ballad or a dance song with simple, clear lyrics that often hold meaning and value to someone in the world. They express a message about everyday life, the trials and tribulations people experience from love, joy to sorrow and sadness. Some songs describe independence or overcoming adversity and challenges. The songs can also describe a perspective or viewpoint on a topic, event, or issue. Whatever may be told through words or melody, at the crux of the song is a story being told. Country music is a form of storytelling and just like many other stories, they hold lessons for the listener.

These lessons can be obvious or ambiguous, depending on how the song is interpreted. Yet, there are a few common lessons that are recognizable across country music and the famous tunes of the classic genre, including these lessons.

Throughout the years, country music has grown, ebbed, and flowed. It has had its highs, but has also faced challenges and controversies. But, one thing has stayed the same, it is one of the longest running musical styles in the United States that focuses on the heartbeat of humans and everything we hold dear. We may have our differences, but we all love and overcome obstacles, while learning lessons along the way, just as country music songs tell us.

Mixed Berry Honey Vanilla Cake

Sponge-like Vanilla Cake Layers that stay moist for 3 days, a soft Mixed Berry Buttercream, and a Honey Berry Compote.... the perfect end-of-summer cake recipe!

Servings: 10 Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 50 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For the Vanilla Cake Layers: (Makes three (3) 6” cake layers)

2 cups All Purpose Flour

2 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder

1/4 tsp. Fine Sea Salt

4 large Eggs, room temperature

1 1/2 cups Granulated Cane Sugar

For the Mixed Berry Honey Compote:

2 cups Frozen or Fresh Mixed Berries

1/4 cup Honey, or maple syrup

Juice of 1 Lemon

1/4 cup Flour

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Vanilla Cake Layers:

6 tbsp. Butter

1 cup Whole Milk

1 tbsp. Vanilla Extract, or 1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Bean Powder

1 tbsp. Olive Oil

For the Mixed Berry Buttercream:

1/3 cup Mixed Berry Honey Compote

1 cup Unsalted Butter, softened

5 cups Powdered Sugar

1-2 tbsp. Heavy Whipping Cream

1 tsp. Vanilla Extract

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter three 6” cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

3. In the bowl of a mixing bowl, add the eggs to beat for 1 minute.

4. Gradually add the sugar while mixing on high speed. Mix on HIGH for 6 more minutes.

5. In the meantime, add the milk and butter to a small saucepan over medium heat. Heat just until the butter is melted.

6. While the butter melts, add the flour to the beaten eggs mixture in 2 batches, mixing just until combined.

7. Remove 1 cup of that batter to a separate bowl. Add the vanilla, olive oil, and hot milk mixture. Whisk vigorously until smooth.

8. Add that mixture back into the batter, and stir just until combined.

9. Evenly distribute the batter between the prepared cake pans.

10. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

11. Let cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to cool completely on a baking rack.

For the Mixed Berry Honey Compote:

1. Combine the mixed berries, honey, and lemon juice in a large saucepan over medium high heat. Add 3-4 tablespoons of water to help soften the berries, if needed.

2. Cover and let simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and add the flour. Stir until there are no flour lumps.

3. Bring to a boil, then simmer 5-6 more minutes, until thickened. Let cool completely. Place in the freezer for a quick cooling process.

For the Mixed Berry Buttercream:

1. Using 1/3 cup of the Berry Honey Compote, run it through a fine mesh sieve to remove any seeds.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the butter and beat on HIGH speed for 2 minutes.

3. Add the berry compote and beat for 2 more minutes, until smooth.

4. Gradually add the powdered sugar on LOW speed.

5. Add 1-2 tbsp. heavy cream to soften the buttercream, then increase speed to HIGH for 5-6 more minutes. The buttercream should be very light and fluffy. The longer you mix it at the end, the softer it will be.

6. Transfer to a piping bag to frost the cake.

To Assemble:

1. Use a long serrated knife to remove the very tops of the cake layers for even surfaces.

2. Pipe a small amount of buttercream on your cake serving plate. Add one cake layer. Pipe a double- layered circle around the outer edges of the cake. Then pipe a smaller open circle inside the cake. Fill in both of the circles with the berry compote. Repeat with the other cake layers. (See abrightmoment.com for visual instructions)

3. Frost the outside of the cake with the buttercream or leave the cake layers “naked” and just pipe frosting on the very top. Decorate with fresh berries and florals to enjoy!

Purpose Push:

Ditch the Doubts

Unlike children, I ponder why adults have a hard time believing in themselves. Add the weight of being a woman in misogynistic environments and it’s a miracle we get any recognition at all. As women entrepreneurs, we’ve all heard those whispers of self-doubt trickling in, saying things like, “You’re not qualified for this,” or “You don’t really know what you’re doing,” or the most popular one, “You’re going to fail.”

What I’ve learned from my entrepreneurship journey and my walk with God is that qualification and failure have no merit in your divine destiny. You may not be qualified, but God is. You may fail but God has the final victory and it includes you.

What did you do with the last brilliant idea that randomly popped into your head? Did you cultivate it or toss it aside? The brain is extremely valuable and when it’s operating at full efficiency, it becomes a portal for God to instill His magnificent strategies. The caveat to this is that God will only give us the small amounts we can handle to keep going (1 Corinthians 10:13). We all have a fleshly desire to know and control everything but God knows we could never handle this information; we would become fearful of all the inevitable life events, good and bad, and stop completely. Self-doubt is a mind trick from the enemy so when you are dealing with it, understand it’s because you don’t have all the information of God’s plan.

When God gave me the idea to make hair pins, I had no clue it would evolve into a jewelry company that impacts women and girls to believe in their self-worth. I am innately an introvert but I’ve had opportunities to speak in front of people about my business and my story. I’ve only been operating as Perennial Peaces for two years and there’s more ahead of me than behind me. I wouldn’t have started if I knew I would have to be this uncomfortable. But when we’re walking with God, He knows how to get us far enough where turning back is no longer an option, which is a major blessing in disguise.

Marinate on the fact God doesn’t give us unfinished plans (Jeremiah 29:11). Psalm 33:11 says, “The plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.”

That means the plan is finished from the beginning! Before you were born, you were

carefully crafted to fulfill this part of God’s magnificent plan. All you have to do is show up! But it’s hard to show up sometimes, I know. This is why God created us to yearn for connections with other people. It’s vital to have a circle of friends or family that support your endeavors and give you encouragement. If you haven’t read the story of Zerubbabel, take some time to learn from this character in the Bible. He led the first and largest group back to The Promised Land after they were exiled for 70 years. Before establishing governance, the people were led to rebuild God’s temple. Like all God-led missions, this was met with resistance and the rebuilding came to a halt for 16 years. Zerubbabel was undoubtedly very discouraged by this, but

God sent Haggai and Zechariah to encourage this leader and the people to resume work -- it was finally completed four years later. This is a small example of how others in your life can push you forward and how you should also be that encouragement for those who battle with discouragement and self-doubt (Proverbs 15:22). Create accountability groups and make sure you’re checking in because these people will nourish your spirit when you can’t do it for yourself. We are complex individuals who will never have the meaning of “Life” fully mastered, but that’s okay because we get to surrender our lives to God (Proverbs 3:6) who has already conquered this world. I’ll be praying that you allow God to help you ditch the doubts for good. I have faith in you.

INTRODUCING

For 16 years, the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce has been noted for excellence, with an unwavering commitment to supporting the local business community. As part of that ongoing mission, the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber is excited to introduce a new program designed to promote the “shop small, shop local” movement. Executive Director Denise Heidel has spent several months working on “Chamber Cash.”

“Chamber Cash is pretty simple,” Denise explained. “It’s a gift certificate program that promotes local shopping and is exclusively accepted by participating Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber Members. Chamber Cash has all the same benefits of any gift certificate people may purchase from an individual business, but it can be spent at ANY of the numerous participating businesses that are members of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce.

A New Initiative Presented by the Lewisville-Chamber of Commerce

“We have borrowed the concept from our friends at Downtown Statesville Development Cooperation,” Denise continued. “I was introduced to their ‘Downtown Dollars’ program almost a year ago and knew it could be a great program for our Chamber, too. Not only will it help promote our participating members, Chamber Cash emphasizes the importance of doing business within our community. As we move into the Christmas shopping season, Chamber Cash is a new and innovative option for those looking for flexible gift giving while supporting local business!”

Denise shared, “While Chamber Cash can only be accepted by Chamber Members who sign up for the program, anyone can purchase or use Chamber Cash! A full list of participating merchants can be seen on our website, Lewisville-Clemmons.com, and of course, that list is anticipated to grow as the program grows!”

The Chamber Cash program is just one of several new initiatives embraced by the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce. “We strive to bring added value and creative options to our Chamber members and the community,” said Denise. “Our staff and our Board of Directors are always eager to find new ways to engage in our community and encourage others to support our members. Chamber Cash is something we’re super excited about and we know that it’s a program that will offer years of benefits as we continue to grow and evolve.”

To purchase Chamber Cash, or for more information about the program, visit Lewisville-Clemmons.com or call the office at 336.970.5100.

Chamber Cash is a great gift for teachers, neighbors, co-workers, friends, and spouses! Give Chamber Cash for birthdays, anniversaries, employee recognition, thank you gifts, and / or as promotional items or prizes. Learn more, including the FAQs of Chamber Cash, at Lewisville-Clemmons.com.

As you begin to think of ways to shop local for the holidays, the LewisvilleClemmons Chamber of Commerce encourages shoppers to consider Chamber Cash, but also to consider participating in the Clemmons Christmas Express! Women in the Workplace Series: Part II

This three part series will provide an in-depth look at the results of the 2023 “Women in the Workplace Community Survey” provided by REACH Women’s Network, exploring the importance of its findings and recognizing the opportunities and change women hope to see in our local workforce. REACH is an acronym for Recognize, Encourage, Advance, Connect Her. The nonprofit’s mission is to close the gender gap by raising the collective voice and influence of women in the workplace.

The professional journey of any woman in the modern workplace is going to look vastly different than not only their male counterparts, but often one another. Dependent on socioeconomic status, race, sexual identity, childcare and other factors, each woman faces specific and unique demands, challenges, and barriers as they work towards career advancement regardless of what industry they work in.

This past April, REACH conducted its first comprehensive study of its kind conducted in Forsyth County, with its survey designed to measure how working women in the community feel about issues such as workplace flexibility and benefits, company culture, job satisfaction, career advancement, work/life integration, and more. With 687 working women in Forsyth County participating, the results provided an up close understanding of what women in our community experience, as well as what they have their eyes on when it comes to the future of their careers.

In this second part of the series, we’re diving into the subject of career advancement and the ways that women encounter unique obstacles on their path to progress.

Despite their talent, dedication, and qualifications, women often experience a disheartening array of negative impacts that impede their advancement, and this year’s survey results showed how women are feeling about their career opportunities. There are always different reasons behind the advancement gaps women experience but some of these could be unconscious biases, gender stereotypes, a lack of diverse representation in leadership roles offered and an assortment of other challenges.

Survey Results: A Look at Career Advancement for Forsyth Women

• 30% say their gender/gender identity has had a negative impact on their career advancement; 28% said childcare responsibilities have had a negative impact (37% said the childcare question was not applicable to them.)

• 80% say professional development is an absolutely essential or very important workplace benefit

• 43% say they are satisfied with their employers’ advancement opportunities; 30% are dissatisfied

• 53% say they are satisfied with the pace of their career advancement; 30% are dissatisfied

• 43% say they are satisfied with employer’s hiring and advancement policies; 29% are dissatisfied

• 44% say they are satisfied with their employer’s performance review process; 27% are dissatisfied

Opportunities for Employer Support & Change

Regardless of industry, employers are facing an opportunity to listen to what their female employees and potential employees want and need to create a career advancement path that benefits everyone involved.

A large factor in career advancement is building a higher salary as promotions and responsibilities shift and grow. According to a similar study done by americanprogress.org, women’s earnings plateau midcareer, while men’s continue to climb. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that, “Earnings gaps are even larger for many women of color due to intersecting, systemic racial bias in the workplace. Median usual weekly earnings in 2022 were $835 for Black women working full time and $761 for Hispanic women, compared with $1,172 for white men.” Employers need to prioritize looking at their salaries across their employee landscape and seeing where there is opportunity to fairly distribute compensation for positions across genders.

One of the largest factors when looking at reducing unequal career advancements among other professional attributes, is having diverse leadership positions that include women, when decisions are being made. Building intentional and consistent processes for employee performance reviews, advancement opportunities, and the handling of complaints in the workplace is absolutely necessary to seeing change for women.

We continue the work for what’s right.

There have been generations that have poured into the cause of helping create equal rights for women in the workplace. Those contributions can be seen all around our country and on the path so many women have walked in their careers, but there is still improvement to be seen. Exploring these barriers in detail and shedding light on the improvements women are craving in their career paths are vital to working towards a more equitable and inclusive future for all women in the professional world.

If you are interested in learning more about the 2023 survey or receiving additional information, you can sign up for updates through the REACH website, reachwomensnetwork.org/survey.

Creating a Professional Linkedin Profile

LinkedIn is the most prominent professional networking platform and it can help you establish connections with other professionals worldwide. Your profile is a place for you to build your professional brand, showcase your achievements and skills, share content with other professionals, and connect with colleagues, business partners, and potential future employers. Below are some tips for making it great!

WRITE A COMPELLING HEADLINE

Make it short and concise, but compelling enough to attract attention. It should provide a quick snapshot of who you are and what you do. One reason this is so important is that the headline text gets shown in search results within LinkedIn and Google, so your profile will get discovered more easily.

CHOOSE A PROFESSIONAL PROFILE PHOTO

Your profile photo is the first impression, so you should use a professional headshot that showcases your personality. The photo should be recent, and your face should take up about 60% of the space. It is recommended that you wear what you would likely wear to work and smile with your eyes. Avoid using casual or blurry photos that don’t fit the platform’s tone. This means that you should avoid Snapchat, selfies, and other photos that aren’t as professional.

SELECT A BACKGROUND PHOTO THAT HELPS YOU STAND OUT

Your background photo can also help your profile stand out. Choose an image that reflects your industry and showcases your professional achievements. It can help people to see you as a go-to person when they need what you have to offer. It’s not as important that you are in the photo, but make it something that’s memorable and tells visitors more about you. Canva is a great tool for creating background photos that stand out and showcase your brand.

WRITE A CAPTIVATING SUMMARY

Your summary is your chance to tell the story of who you are and why others would want to work or connect with you – so don’t just use it to list job titles or skills. Talk about your background, list out your accomplishments, and weave a short story detailing your career trajectory. Finally, end with a call to action. It’s good practice to use keywords relevant to your field and highlight your most important achievements and skills.

HIGHLIGHT YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

The experience section should provide an overview of your work history. It should be a little higher level than what might appear on a resume; share information about your roles and responsibilities and highlight your achievements in each position. As you would on a resume, quantify your results where possible.

SHARE YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

The education section should include your academic achievements, including the institutions you attended, degrees, certifications, and relevant coursework.

LIST YOUR SKILLS & TALENTS

The skills section is an excellent way to highlight your skills and talents and show your expertise. List the skills that are most relevant to your current or desired profession – and be sure to include technical as well as soft skills. Keep in mind that skills are keywords that others might look for in a search. Pro tip: Encourage your connections to endorse you for your skills as this can add credibility to your profile.

GATHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations are personal testimonials written to illustrate the experience of working with you. There’s a drop-down menu in the Recommendations section of your profile that makes it easy to reach out to specific contacts and request recommendations. Take the time to think about who you would most value a recommendation from and personalize your request. Writing recommendations for others is a great way to encourage them to reciprocate.

GET A CUSTOM URL

Customizing your URL makes finding your profile easier. You will typically be assigned a URL that contains parts of your first and last name along with a random string of numbers. Remove the numbers and make your URL your first and last name. If it is taken, try adding a middle initial or the industry you work in.

A well-developed LinkedIn profile increases your chances of connecting with thought leaders, capturing the attention of other professionals, and finding new growth opportunities. Although there’s no such thing as a perfect LinkedIn profile, you can get close to the mark with these tips.

Sheridan C. Watkins | Perennial Peaces

This month’s featured artist and author, Sheridan C. Watkins, reminds women of their power and worth through unique accessories and jewelry that helps its wearer shine.

How would you describe your work?

Perennial Peaces is a jewelry brand that encourages uniqueness and transformation with fun, lightweight accessories. We create handcrafted jewelry and gifts for evolving women and girls and our mission is to transcend self-worth and be your source for peace on Earth. Using unorthodox materials like fabric and felt, our jewelry designs merge vintage traditions with quirky and modern styles. While many jewelry brands focus on the individual, we focus on heirloom quality that can last generations. We strive to continue designing jewelry that illuminates your uniqueness so you can heal and transform.

What influences your designs?

Nature, God and sustainability. I’ve always been a lover of nature and plants (I’m even getting better at taking care of them). I’m also a lover of vintage and I love to repurpose things which is one reason I gravitated towards using fabric in my designs because certain fabrics are timeless. And God because He worked with me to bring Perennial Peaces to life.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist/maker?

I’ve evolved in so many ways, from my character to my work ethic and endurance, and it gave me the permission to develop as an artist because I have freedom to do so. I’ve become comfortable with being uncomfortable and continue to push myself to try new things. I journal often and it’s always amazing to see how far I’ve come. September marks the 1st anniversary of me changing my business name to Perennial Peaces. I think it’s interesting how my artistry has led me to birthing a business that I hope will go beyond me. And my goal is to keep evolving.

Self-worth and transformation play a key part in your mission. How would you describe your own self-worth journey?

I now realize my self-worth journey started when I was born. All I was trying to do was discover who I was meant to be and life threw everything it had for me. As I evolved as a person and continued talking to people, I identified with them and it shifted my perspective that life doesn’t have to happen to you but can instead happen for you. Certain events in my life prompted me to go to therapy and it truly transformed me. I believe as long as I try, God helps me find the right resources (whether it’s the Bible, people, education, etc.) so I can grow.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

It can be tricky because my days don’t look the same but I had to get organized while also being flexible, so I look at my days, weeks or months ahead and carve time to only

focus on making. I’m not perfect about carving out time, but when I do it intentionally, it allows my other tasks to have a deadline so I’m more disciplined. Whether it’s fulfilling orders, creating new jewelry designs, or learning a new skill, it’s all a creative outlet that I look forward to.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I am learning traditional techniques of beading and I am so excited about it! I will have showcased it for the first time at the Black is Beautiful Bridal Show in August. I’ll soon be bringing more styles to Perennial Peaces. Think formal and bridal!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

If you want to make a living from your art, don’t be afraid to tell people what you do, often. Even if you have a job, when someone asks what you do, lead with your business/art first because that’s a small way of manifesting what you want into reality. One day soon, that will 100% be the case. Audibly speak your life into existence, because words are very powerful and you might as well read The Word while you’re at it!

If you are interested in learning more about Sheridan and Perennial Peaces you can follow along on Facebook and Instagram @perennialpeaces as well as find her work online at www.perennialpeaces.com. If shopping locally, you can check her work out at this fall’s Southern Charm at the Farm event as well as several shops and galleries including the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts Gift Shop.

Celebrate Fall by Creating a

One of the reasons bucket lists are so popular is because they require us to be conscious of what we do with our time. What better season than fall to try creating one? This season is one of the best for a bucket list, especially since many of the things that occur in fall only happen once a year! Creating a fall bucket list with children, significant others, friends, or other loved ones is a wonderful way to to spend time planning activities. Read on for eight different methods to be intentional about autumn moments.

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #1

Create a new fall cocktail or mocktail! Fall is the perfect season to create your own signature autumn drink. While we are all big fans of pumpkin spice, there are several other delicious spices to try out. Consider adding some apple spice to your morning latte, or cinnamon, ginger, or cloves to an afternoon hot toddy!

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #2

Plan a fall movie marathon watch party! For friends both far and near, a watch party is the perfect activity to do during one of the cooler fall nights. Films displaying gorgeous fall scenery include: The Lake House, Autumn in New York and You’ve Got Mail. Whereas movies like Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic and The Witches are sure to put everyone into a spooky mood.

Time for a sweater hunt! Early fall is the perfect time to go through your closet and rediscover your favorite autumn sweaters. If some of your chosen sweaters no longer work, consider it time to donate older pieces, and find your new favorite fall sweater. If your wardrobe has mostly inexpensive pieces, consider making this the year to invest in a more high-end sweater. There is no better feeling than having high quality material—like cashmere—on your skin.

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #4

Go apple picking! This season is the perfect time to plan a trip around picking apples for yourself and/or your loved ones. Several orchards are a short drive away - from Apple Hill Orchard, in Flat Rock, NC, to the Historic Orchard at Altapass, this area of North Carolina has many options to plan a day trip. The extra benefit is that many of these orchards offer delicious treats, from homemade apple cider donuts, to hot apple cider.

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #5

Time for a fall road trip! The North Carolina mountains are the ideal destination for this season! Make the change of the season a time to grab your loved ones and plan a mountain get away. Many VRBO or Airbnb houses offer homes with firepits, outdoor hot tubs and picturesque mountain views, where a morning cup of coffee is sure to make everyone feel geared up for fall. There is the additional benefit that if planned correctly, you should be able to view the spectacular view of the leaves changing from green to lovely shades of gold, maroon, and orange as you drive.

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #6

Change your house décor. One of my favorite fall activities is getting my fall décor out of the attic and decorating the house. From autumn-scented candles to pumpkin and leaves memorabilia, this season looks as beautiful inside as it does on the outside. Needing inspiration for fall decorations? Head over to your favorite craft shop to find plenty of fall decorating ideas.

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #7

Build your own fall wreath. Every door needs its own lovely fall wreath. Consider the changing of the seasons the perfect time to plan a get together with friends, where all can build their own fall wreath. The steps to do so are not as complicated as it sounds. Websites like “Country Living” and “Pioneer Women” offer DIY fall wreath tutorials.

FALL BUCKET LIST ACTIVITY #8

Plan an autumn picnic! This season is the perfect opportunity to grab friends, food and a warm blanket and head outdoors. A picnic is the best way to make the most of a gorgeous fall afternoon. Consider wearing your new favorite fall sweater, bringing your new signature fall cocktail/mocktail, and finally, your delicious fall baked goods. This activity is sure to make everyone ready for the arrival of fall!

Sometimes the Best Therapist Has Four Legs

During times when comfort is needed and healing is sought, there is something about having the love of an animal. Their unconditional acceptance makes them the perfect therapists. Love on a Leash is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to bringing comfort, happiness, and healing to people nationwide by increasing public awareness of petprovided therapy. It provides an avenue for volunteer pet therapy teams, with one human and their dog, cat, or rabbit.

Love on a Leash was started in the 1980s in California by early believers in the benefits of pet-provided therapy. As the impact of pet-therapy started to be understood, the organization was founded to offer a framework and certification for people to provide pet therapy to others. Having a national certification helps to maintain a standard process of testing and onboarding, to enhance the experience for all.

Love on a Leash has always been run by volunteers who are passionate about providing pet therapy, including their Board of Directors. Over the years, the group has expanded to include members in many different states, and there are currently more than 2300 active members who are working as therapy teams. Across the country, there are more than 60 Love on a Leash Chapters, including the Triad Chapter.

Triad Love on a Leash became an official chapter in 2018 with 6 humans and 9 dogs. Currently there are 17 human members, 20 dog members and several teams in training. The teams include dogs of all breeds. Triad Love on a Leash serves the Triad area including Forsyth and surrounding counties. The teams visit many facilities including schools, funeral homes, assisted living centers, and hospitals along with participating in community events. Several of the teams have been together for more than 8 years. The chapter is led by Co-Leaders Pam Madden (canine partners Maggie and Sophie) and Charlene Wellborn (canine partner Ellie). “There’s something very special that happens when someone

needing comfort or just a caring soul, spends time with an animal,” said Pam. Charlene added that, “Many times the visits are just as meaningful for Ellie and me as they are for the people we are visiting.”

A therapy pet is trained with its owner, as a team, to provide comfort and stress relief to others in a variety of situations. These visits are always free. The Triad Chapter is a cohesive group who support each other and in turn support the community. Charlene said, “Many times our teams form long-standing relationships with community partners. We are honored and thankful for the opportunity to serve others.” Triad Love on a Leash Nationally Certified Therapy Dog Teams bring comfort, happiness, and healing to our community.

All In The Details

For those of you experiencing the emotional adjustment of children growing up and leaving home, there are many positive aspects of being an empty nester to look forward to. As your children approach adulthood, they embark on a new and exciting chapter in their lives, and you should do the same. Whether you have been thinking of home improvements for a long time or want to redesign your interior to suit your new lifestyle, design plays an important role.

What I would like to encourage my readers to do this month is to look inward and think about what would make you happy. The house is now all you own and the perfect time to rethink your spatial design. Do you have dreams of a glamorous bathroom or a remodeled kitchen with professional space planning? Redesigning these spaces has been the most popular of projects we have undertaken over the past few years.

Transforming newly vacant spaces can be an exciting opportunity to conceive of a new space. Whether your son or daughter has outgrown the need for his or her own bedroom, they will still require a warm and welcoming sleeping retreat for future visits. Now is the perfect time to redesign their childhood space into a grown-up guest room with all the comforts of home. Plush, tailored bedding and custom furnishings layered with sentimental touches will show your child that there’s no place like home, and the door is always open. Don’t forget the bathroom they use to complete the newly designed bedroom.

No need to worry, hire June DeLugas Interiors to design and turnkey the remodeling process for you. Our design staff is ready and waiting for you.

Thank you and enjoy a great month in North Carolina.

God Bless,

June

Triad Craft & Art Guild

If you had walked through the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Gardens this past summer to attend Artisans in the Garden, you would have immediately noticed the eclectic range of designs from handmade wall clocks, to wooden toy trucks, hand crafted ornaments, local pottery and beautiful jewelry. You would have also noticed the friendly vendors, supporting each other and having a great time! LaDonna Crist, a member of the Triad Craft and Art Guild, stated that their members are all unique. “Not one of us is making the same thing as another. It’s phenomenal. And we love to have fun!” The Triad Craft and Art Guild was formed as other Guilds around the area dissolved or word spread that this guild was very artist friendly. It prides itself on having members that make aesthetically pleasing designs and do it all by hand. Items are created, re-created, or repurposed by each artisan. Artisans in the Triad Craft and Art Guild have skills in woodworking, glass fusion, alcohol painting, embroidery, vinyl record designs, handcrafting jewelry, sewing, soap making, fiber arts, knitting, art on canvas, vinyl imprinting, and more! Each member brings a unique perspective to the group when working together. Some are great at advertising; others are good with the computer or coming up with innovative ideas. Working together with a group helps to build each other’s passions and businesses. Seasoned vendors in the group can also guide new artisans on the “in’s and out’s” of the business, helping them learn the process more quickly than going it alone.

The Guild is always looking for new members to join their group. Current members range in age and have different years

of experience. Whether someone is new to handcrafting or they have been crafting a product for a while, there is a place for them in the Triad Craft and Art Guild! Their overall goal is to have fun, create pieces, empower each other, and bring their pieces to the public! The Guild meets monthly to learn from each other, celebrate each other, and plan for events to display and sell their designs. The event that occurred this past summer is one of two large events that they plan and hold throughout the year. No matter where you run into artisans from the Triad Craft and Art Guild, what you will notice is their friendliness, their passion for creating, the support they have for each other, and how much fun they enjoy having throughout the process!

“There is creativity in everyone. When you find a passion, no matter whether it’s a hobby or your job, you can lose yourself in the process and it becomes so much fun,” said Crist.

If you are interested in learning more about the Triad Craft and Art Guild, you can email them at traidcraftandartguild@ gmail.com or find them on Facebook. Their next event will take place this winter on December 1st and 2nd. They are interested in having more artisans join as vendors. If you plan to come to their events, you can ensure you are shopping local, supporting the local community, and you are able to meet the actual person behind the art or craft. It becomes a more personal experience! There will also not be any other piece that looks the same!

5 Areas in Your Business You’re Wasting Time & Energy On (And Where to Focus Instead)

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

One thing I don’t have time for as a small business is wasting time. If you’re anything like me, you are juggling a full plate every week and want to use your time and energy as effectively as possible. Nowadays, it seems that with every social media post or podcast episode distracting you, you get caught up in tasks you have no business spending time on. In fact, there’s a chance right now that your to-do list is full of activities and tasks that drain your productivity and hinder your business growth without you even knowing it.

This month, I want to help you identify areas in your business that might be masquerading as MVPs when really they are your least valuable players. Let’s explore five common areas where you may be wasting precious resources and discover alternative areas that deserve your focus instead.

#1 EXCESSIVE ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS

You don’t need to be “Amy Admin” every day. It’s common for small business owners to spend an excessive amount of time on administrative tasks like bookkeeping, scheduling, and paperwork - especially solopreneurs. You might be saying “If I don’t do it, who will?” but the answer doesn’t have to be someone else necessarily. If you are ready to delegate some of these tasks, start by adding in an intern or virtual assistant. If you’re not ready to make that investment just yet, consider setting up automations for things like communications, scheduling and more. The repetitive tasks in your business are usually the easiest to simplify and automate so start there.

#2 NICHING DOWN

Somewhere there’s a business guru on Instagram clutching their pearls as I write this. Are there benefits to niching down and focusing on a specific topic or offer? Yes. The purpose of “niching down” is to home in on what you want your customers to know your business for. Instead of spending time trying to make sure every offer and message you share fits into a perfect little niche box, think about how you are showing up. Is your messaging showcasing how you work with people and the overall impact your brand makes on people? You don’t have to niche down to serve only one customer; instead concentrate on creating a cohesive brand story and core culture and message.

#3 OVERCOMPLICATING YOUR MARKETING

If you feel like you’re wasting time and energy on ineffective marketing strategies, maybe you’re not far off. It’s important to assess your marketing efforts regularly and identify tactics that yield the best results. Stop worrying about what other brands are doing - marketing isn’t meant to be a cookie cutter strategy. What works for them may not work for you. Focus on implementing strategies that align with your time, abilities, and target audience, and always keep simplifying as you go. You don’t have to create content daily, but you do have to lean into your core messaging and market in a way that you can keep up with consistently. When you invest your time and energy into the right marketing platforms and efforts, you can reach a wider audience and generate more leads.

#4 REINVENTING THE CONTENT WHEEL

You want fresh content that your audience (and you) don’t get bored with, right? How else are you going to stand out in a saturated industry? But you don’t have to create brand new content to do it! Don’t waste precious time reinventing the wheel when it comes to your social media posts, blogs, email marketing and more. Think about what’s already working. What content has been well received by your audience in the past? Do you have previous social media captions you can reshare or flesh out into an email or other longer form content piece? Your audience won’t realize they are seeing repurposed content and it will not only save you time, but help drive home the message and value of your business because you’re staying aligned with your own existing content.

#5 HUSTLING UNTIL IT HURTS

As a business owner chances are, you’re no stranger to burnout. While I’m sure somedays it feels too easy to neglect your own time and well being in pursuit of the success you are working so hard towards, it’s not as helpful as you think. The journey you’re on is for the long haul, so creating boundaries and sticking to them is going to be your best tool. When you push too hard you actually end up less creative and productive. You need to create time for activities that promote physical and mental well-being, such as exercise, meditation, or even just hobbies and relationships you enjoy. Prioritizing self care and breaks will make you more productive and focused.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, let’s reduce the time spent on 1-2 of these areas and allow yourself to redirect your energy towards things that will move your business and sales forward! Look at the list and think about which ones may have struck a nerve when reading - maybe that’s exactly where you’re ready to make a change.

LoveWell Boutique

Embracing Every New Season!

Beyond grateful for 11 exciting years of making memories at their storefront in Winston-Salem, LoveWell Boutique owners Anitra and Brad Mitchell have watched their own family grow up (sons, Cooper and Turner, who can always be spotted behind the scenes!) and witnessed — with gratitude — a close-knit community of loyal clients emerge.

While styles have come, gone, and often circled back for an encore, the heartfelt commitment behind the Lovewell Boutique family has only flourished. Forsyth Woman is also proud to say we’ve been partners with Anitra and Brad since the very beginning!

“We’re excited to celebrate 11 years in our current location, and have some exciting events planned for September 21st and 22nd,” says Anitra. The fun will include Permanent Jewelry in the store, Tiny Tattoos, The Bra Lady, and more — along with plenty of champagne toasts to mark the occasion. With a purchase of $100 or more, you’ll also receive a free LoveWell Boutique tote bag (a $29 value). Keep an eye on their Facebook and Instagram pages (@ lovewell_boutique) for updates on the celebration!

STYLING A NEW SEASON

Chatting with Anitra and Operations Manager Serene, you get a sense they have a growing excitement for the new fall season — and honestly, don’t we all?

“We love the season change,” explains Anitra. “It’s the time to take what you have in your closet, and start transitioning those pieces into looks for a new season. Let us help you flip your closet — that’s where our team really shines!”

September 2023 | 45

Fall is definitely looking colorful, according to Anitra, in shades that will really make you smile!

“We’re also seeing a fun retro vibe — especially for sweaters and tops,” she adds. “This fall can be your season to be bold — but still keep true to the sophistication you love. There will always be plenty of neutrals and classics — so there’s something for everybody.”

She’s also delighted that LoveWell Boutique has been designated a “Liverpool Destination Store” — a distinction for only a certain number of boutiques across the United States. Check out their online events for a glimpse of the popular Liverpool clothing line that’s known for superior fit and on-trend style.

And, online events are the staff’s current favorite way of introducing customers to new lines and exciting promotions! As part of the mission to meet customers where they are in their life right this moment, the boutique’s Live events have taken shopping to a whole new level.

“We love offering Live events on our free LoveWell Boutique app, on the website, and on Facebook and Instagram,” says Anitra. “Many of our best customers have never been to the store, but they show up regularly on Lives, they private message us, and we are able to connect with them in a way that is unique to the world today.”

Thanks to their free app, there are also LoveWell Boutique customers literally all around the world. Download the app today and get 15% off your first purchase in the app — simply use LOVEWELLAPP at checkout. Hint: Any time you’re shopping online and your size is out of stock, you can join a waitlist, pre-authorize purchase, and Serene and Anitra will then personal shop for you behind the scenes, doing their best to get the item for you — one of the many ways LoveWell also shines at customer service!

The LWB team also loves the idea that their boutique is literally a “head-to-toe” shopping destination. From makeup and skincare to hair accessories, jewelry, tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes, they check all the boxes for your onestop shopping list.

“We all love — and we all wear — the Farmasi makeup line we carry,” Anitra adds. “That means we don’t sell any products we don’t also feel completely comfortable wearing on our own skin!”

IT’S ALWAYS PERSONAL

As always, you’ll feel the vibe of a true community of women at LoveWell Boutique, and the team is proud to share their knowledge and style expertise with the ever-growing customer base.

“Education builds confidence,” explains Anitra, mentioning events they offer regularly, including makeup tutorials and bra fittings by the experts. Then there’s personal styling, offered by lead stylist Valerie, which can find you stepping out of your fashion comfort zone on occasion, or simply enhancing some current favorite pieces in your wardrobe. Call the store to schedule your personal styling appointment today!

The talented ladies at LoveWell Boutique all work full-time — something of a novelty in retail — which shows their dedication and passion for what they do. Regular clients have come to know operations manager Serene, as Anitra’s righthand in everything boutique-related. Having been here for

the past six years, she’s an integral part of all things LWB. You’ll meet Jennifer (the retail administrator and “hub” of the store!), Shelley, who oversees intake and shipping, and of course, stylist Valerie. You may not see Brad often, he’s always around, strengthening the business side of LoveWell Boutique. The LWB ladies like to think of the store as their home away from home, so when you come by for a visit, you’re greeted like a best friend! But there’s also a secret to that.

“We know some customers like to browse and decide on their own, and others want to be ‘one of the girls’ and have us jump right into their search for something perfect,” says Anitra. The team knows that gauging a customer’s “shopping profile” is important, and it’s a topic often discussed at their monthly team-building sessions.

“We learn so much during these times together about communicating and connecting with each other, then we see it play out with our customer relationships, too!” says Anitra. “It helps us serve customers better when we serve each other’s needs well also.”

The beautiful ladies of LoveWell Boutique are always available to make you feel pampered and dressed to perfection! Visit the store at 110 Oakwood Drive, Suite D, in Winston-Salem, 336-893-6589, online at Lovewellboutique.com, their free app by searching LoveWell Boutique in your app store, or on Facebook and Instagram @lovewell_boutique. Midwives Join the Care Team at Growing OB-GYN Clinic

Always dedicated to next-level care, Novant Health WomanCare recently added midwifery services to provide care for women throughout their pregnancy and delivery. Midwives partner with the Novant Health obstetricians who have cared for Winston-Salem area patients for decades. These certified midwives support women who seek their specific expertise, and they provide it in the same building as traditional obstetrics and gynecology care, for both convenience and peace of mind.

A positive, safe, healthy and memorable birth experience is Novant Health’s number one goal, with board-certified physicians and certified nurse-midwives working together as a team. Your ob-gyn and midwife will collaborate to create a care plan that offers your family the best possible experience, and midwives also function as nurse practitioners, seeing patients in the clinic for gynecological problems, and even Pap tests.

During the last year, five certified nurse-midwives joined Novant Health WomanCare. They are distinguished by both a professional certification and a nursing degree, and they deliver babies at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

Each brings a unique perspective, and all are eager to dispel several misconceptions about the profession. One is the thought that midwives are like doulas, and only offer support during labor. While that is a big part of their care, they are also medical providers. They deliver babies and repair vaginal lacerations after delivery and can also prescribe medications.

Other misconceptions are that midwives only do home births, that they don’t encourage pain management, and that it’s not possible to have both a physician and a midwife present. While some midwives perform community birth, most practice in a hospital setting. They may specialize in supporting unmedicated laboring patients, but mothersto-be have access to all appropriate pain management options.

More About Our Midwife Team

Tammy Brothers

Tammy Brothers has been a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) for 14 years and an RN for 19 years. She feels Novant WomanCare is unique in being one of the few clinics offering midwifery care in the office, and in labor and delivery. “Midwives encourage people along the way, and we’re equipped to make small adjustments or perhaps big interventions when needed,” she said. “Midwives are a great asset to the team. We have expertise in women’s health, pregnancy and childbirth, plus we have a nursing background, which lends itself to a holistic approach. We also have a wonderfully supportive physician team at WomanCare, all who are experts at dealing with complications in pregnancy and delivery. The physicians perform C-sections when needed, so having us both available is the best of both worlds.”

registered nurse for four-and-a-half years in Cincinnati. “We have a very collaborative practice philosophy, and multiple providers are always available to consult on problems that arise, or if we need a second opinion,” she said. “We are always paired with a physician when we are on-call, and all our physicians respect and understand midwifery, and encourage us to practice to the full scope of our license. I especially love meeting patients during prenatal appointments and then being a familiar face at the hospital when it’s time for labor and birth. We also check in postpartum to assess mental health and physical health or prescribe birth control.”

Sybilla Howell

Sybilla Howell, CNM, has been a labor and delivery nurse for 14 years and a practicing midwife for 10 years. She has experience in both hospital births and out-of-hospital births. “The WomanCare team combines knowledge, compassion and technology to provide each patient individual care based on their health and history,” she said. “Being a labor and delivery nurse nudged my passion to do more — to teach, be present and provide care that many women miss out on. Based on my own delivery experience, had I had a midwife, I think my delivery would have been less invasive and breastfeeding would have been smoother. I strongly believe in giving guidance for an informed choice — to give advice and motivate, but let the mother make choices about her care.”

Leigh Anne Smith

Leigh Anne Smith, CNM, started as an RN in labor and delivery and is committed to offering midwifery to women in the Winston-Salem community. The midwifery care model includes birth planning, movement during labor, wireless monitors, hydrotherapy and labor support. She loves the smaller practice setting where they know patients by name. “Each time a child comes Earth-side, it’s a true miracle, which never gets old,” she said. “It’s a pleasure to assist families during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.” She also explains another misconception — that midwives

aren’t certified. “At Novant Health, we are all certified nurse midwives, requiring a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in midwifery, and a passed board exam. Our governing body monitors and sets yearly requirements to practice.”

Autumn Wendler

Autumn Wendler, CNM, provides care to women from adolescence through post-menopause, with a special interest in mental health support, as well as LGBTQI+ care. She loves empowering women to actively participate in their wellness and agrees the collaboration with physicians is what sets Novant Health apart. “Our physicians provide the support we need to care for higher-risk patients who desire midwifery care, by helping us manage the more complex medical aspects so we can focus on the physiologic and holistic parts of pregnancy and birth,” she said. “We can provide patients with a midwifery-exclusive experience, even including patients with some high-risk factors. The physician may manage the medical aspects of labor, while the midwife takes the lead on labor and birth management.”

WHEN YOU WORK WITH A JERK

Putting up with even one jerk, takes a toll on productivity, engagement and professionalism at work. And one person can single-handedly contribute to a toxic work culture. They leave a trail of people behind them that feel demeaned, de-energized, and hurt.

“No matter how educated you are or what your job title is, you can fall victim to a jerk at work,” says Tessa West, author of Jerks at Work: Toxic Coworkers and What to Do About Them

HERE ARE SOME BEHAVIORS THAT YOU MIGHT SEE FROM JERKS AT WORK.

• Credit stealing - Act like a friend, but betray and steal credit for everything good – such as ideas, work and contributions – to better themselves.

• Kissers/kickers - Wants to climb to the top, treating colleagues as the competition. They aim to gain approval from higher-ups at any cost. That includes throwing coworkers under the bus.

• Bulldozers - Well-connected and leverage this to take over how things are done and decided within their groups. They also use fear and intimidation to get what they want from colleagues, bosses, and direct reports.

• Micromanagers - Impatient and disrespect your time and space. They monitor time and behavior that’s none of their business.

• Free riding - experts at doing the minimum – or nothing – and getting rewarded for it.

• Gaslighters - Grand scale liars that isolate their victims and slowly build the altered reality they want believed.

We don’t like to think about jerks as talented people — we like to think of them as losers. But the real dangerous jerks are the smart, charming and skilled kind. They’re able to fail because they’re charismatic, they know the right things to say, they know the right

people, they can read a room and they have a lot of soft skills that we tend to undervalue.

Netflix has cultivated a work culture that doesn’t tolerate brilliant jerks. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says, “Some companies tolerate them. For us, the cost to effective teamwork is too high.” Jerks destroy culture and teamwork.

SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO DEAL WITH JERKS?

OBVIOUSLY, IT DEPENDS ON THE BEHAVIOR INVOLVED BUT HERE ARE SOME GENERAL TIPS.

• You have heard that you should “love your enemies.” Try to take the high road.

• Stay composed as they are looking for a reaction from you.

• Reduce your interactions with the individual if possible.

• Address the behavior with the other person using these tips:

- Share the behavior, how it made you feel, and ask for it to stop.

- Try to understand what’s motivating them. This may provide you with some insight into how to handle it.

- If you feel angry and want to lash out at the person, take a few deep breaths, count to 10, or remove yourself from the situation until you have had a chance to calm down and gather your thoughts.

- Document and get help if needed.

If you are a leader, don’t tolerate jerk-like behavior. Keep your eyes open for it, read the room, and get regular feedback from your employees. When you become aware of jerk-like behavior, don’t ignore it. Address it immediately and let the individual know what the consequences will be if it continues. Jerks can tear down your department and cause issues with performance, morale and retention. It’s not worth putting up with –even if the individual is brilliant and performs well.

Making Dollars, Making $ense

Challenges with the Mindset Shift: A Common Experience for Retirees

Our office has the privilege of not only managing client assets, but coaching folks through life milestones. I personally have met with a few clients recently that have been experiencing what we call, “challenges with the mindset shift.”

Most investors we work with invest 30 plus years to accumulate and build their family’s net worth. One of the most enjoyable aspects of our job is to help folks understand when they can retire with a high degree of probability based on their nest egg and spending habits.

However, a common occurrence we see with many of our clients after this great life-achievement, is learning how to spend their hard-earned investment portfolio. Below are the considerations we walk through with our clients to educate on this topic:

1) Understanding “Sustainable Withdraw Rate”

Looking at a client’s liquid net-worth and other income sources comes into play here. For instance, a retired couple may have $1 million worth of investment accounts with us and spend $30k a year off the accounts including taxes due. If you perform the quick math, they are spending 3% of their nest egg with us. We help folks understand, based on this spending rate, how long the dollars could last.

2) Software Stress-Testing with increased living expense spending

Our financial planning software allows us to compare our clients planned spending to additional scenarios including spending more than planned in retirement. Many times, we find that showing our clients spending much more (including inflation assumptions) than they currently are, and how that could affect their nest-egg, brings a sense of clarity.

The financial planning process contains many variables, but these are two important topics we wanted to help investors learn more about. Investor education is at the forefront of our process and we hope to add value when possible!

The information provided here is for general information only and should not be considered an individualized recommendation or personalized investment advice. The investment strategies mentioned here may not be suitable for everyone. Each investor needs to review an investment strategy for his or her own particular situation before making any investment decision.

All investing involves risk including loss of principal. No strategy assures success or protects against loss.

PULLED PORK FROM THE SMOKER

When September rolls in there’s one thing that’s on my mind constantly football season. For this month I wanted to share my absolute favorite tailgate recipe: pulled pork in the smoker! This is a crowd pleaser, will feed a lot of mouths and is so simple set it and forget it!

All you need for this is your favorite BBQ rub, some mustard and a bonein pork shoulder (you can almost always find these at any grocery store for around $10-15 depending on size). A good rule of thumb with pulled pork is usually around 1/3 lb per person. So a 10 lb shoulder will easily feed around 15 people, you lose about half of the weight of the meat once it’s cooked and pulled.

A lot of my recipes you can do on any kind of cooking utensil, but for this one you have to do this on a smoker (pellet, traditional, or even a charcoal kettle grill).

PREPARE YOUR SMOKER: Preheat your smoker to 250-275 (you can even go 225 if you want it to take a little longer). With pork I usually run some basic hickory pellets, but any will be fine. If you’re doing this on charcoal, definitely add some hickory wood chunks.

PORK SHOULDER PREP: While the smoker gets up to temp, get your pork butt out and score the fat cap (optional) and remove any excess fat that’s hanging off that could get burned up during the cook. Next, lather it down with some yellow mustard for a binder, to help the seasoning adhere quickly. Then season all over with your favorite BBQ rub. Don’t be shy with the seasoning on this—you want it covered. My favorite for this is Meat Church’s Honey Hog Hot. Let the seasoning adhere and “sweat” out on the pork for 20-30 minutes before you put it on the smoker.

SMOKING THE MEAT: Now you’re ready to throw the pork shoulder/butt on the pit! Get it on and if you prefer, insert a temperature probe so you can keep track of the temps and have a good idea of when you’ll be ready to serve. Once it’s in there for about an hour and a half, and you start to see some bark forming on the meat, you’ll want to spritz it. I

use Meat Sweats Hog Wash, it’s a great pre-packaged spritz made locally here in North Carolina. But you can also spritz with Apple Cider Vinegar, or even apple juice. After your first spritz, you’ll want to keep spritzing it every hour or so.

Once you start to get a really dark mahogany looking color on the butt, you’ll want to keep checking your internal temps. Once we get to 165 internal, we’re at the point where we can wrap it up in aluminum foil, or put it in an aluminum steam pan. I prefer the pan, so all the juices coming out of it stay in the pan and keep everything super moist and tender. You can cover the top of the pan with some aluminum foil and it’ll help speed up the cook.

Let it ride in the smoker until you get to 203-205 internal. That is when you can pull it off the smoker. There’s no exact time you can predict for this big cut of meat, but typically it’s somewhere around an hour per pound. So a 10 lb butt can take at least 10 hours to fully cook, sometimes even longer.

RESTING AND SHREDDING: Lastly, once you pull the pork butt/ shoulder off of the smoker, you have to let it rest for at least 30 minutes, or even an hour if you’ve got time. Resting a large cut of meat like this allows all of the juices to redistribute around and makes it extremely tender and flavorful. After the rest period, pull it out of the aluminum pan and pull the bone out (it should pull out with no resistance) and just shred it up with your hands (or some bbq claws) you can then pour the juices from the bottom of the pan all over the pulled pork for even more flavor!

We see gluten free sections at the grocery store, and it’s usually packed with all sorts of regular, everyday grocery items sans the gluten, like breads, crackers, flour. If you are buying Oreos, you will see that amongst the double stuffed, regular, and seasonal flavor, they also have a gluten free package. Gluten is a buzzword, and you will see it all around once you recognize it.

Gluten is a combination of proteins found in wheat. Some people have serious conditions, like celiac disease, which means they can become very ill if there is even a small amount of cross contamination of the food they eat coming into contact with any food containing gluten. Celiac affects one percent of Americans and so many people are undiagnosed! Someone with celiac who goes undiagnosed and continues to consume gluten can cause serious damage to their intestinal lining and this can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies as the body becomes unable to absorb and process the necessary nutrients that are important.

Some people are just gluten sensitive - and that sensitivity can show up in different ways. It might mean that they endure several problems when they have consumed anything containing gluten, like skin irritation, rashes or hives, even coughing and shortness of breath, and mild to severe digestive upset including vomiting or diarrhea. It seems like a stretch to think eating something can result in a cough or hives, but our gut health can influence every bodily function and the effects of disrupting our gut can show up in ways that have nothing to do with the gut itself.

For me personally, I didn’t realize that I was gluten sensitive or intolerant until my skin was irritated and inflamed. When I took the leap and cut out gluten, my face became less irritated and my entire gut health seemed to improve. I never connected my skin or my gut to something I loved so much: BREAD! When I say love, I truly mean that I loved bread. It

Gluten: Friend or Foe?

was my favorite thing about a Jersey Mike’s sandwich, and I would consume French bread in generous amounts. I had eaten it my entire life and always tied my gut issues to being something at a restaurant or something I must have eaten that particular day. Now that I know I am gluten sensitive, I think back to my teenage years and wonder if my sporadic break-outs could have been tied to the bread I loved so much all along.

For the past four years I have been careful to cut out over-doing the gluten as I know that I have a threshold and once I have crossed it, I regret it. I can have a smidge of gluten and be okay, but if I indulge in too much, I will pay for that indulgence with stomach pain and tiny red bumps across my nose and cheeks and these never show up immediately, they can take twenty-four to forty-eight hours. I have to be mindful of what I eat and in general I just stay far away from anything containing any wheat product. This means reading labels and looking for gluten free symbols in the stores. It also means that going to a brewery with friends, means searching the menu for wine

or perhaps a seltzer or cider that they offer. These days it’s getting easier and easier to find gluten free items that replace the dearly loved gluten filled ones, like breads, pastas, pizza, and cake! My only complaint is that the gluten free items are more costly than the regular ones. That is because the wheat crops are abundant and to replace the gluten, we see things like rice flour and tapioca starch taking its place and those simply aren’t as cheap as wheat.

If you seem to be struggling with any sort of gut ailment or even some skin and respiratory issues, it might be worth your health to keep a food diary and try cutting out some of the foods that are known to cause issues, one being gluten. Sometimes it can be processed dairy like cheese or perhaps it’s cow’s milk in general. Eggs are another food that people often test sensitive to and it can be the egg white or the egg yolk. They can create a different sensitivity level in your body. You don’t have to see a doctor now to have a food sensitivity test. You can do them through the mail! Just a simple finger prick and you can have your sensitivities tested and emailed to you in a matter of weeks.

FOR FANS OF FOOD!

HakkaChow - Asian Eats

Winston-Salem is home to many Asian eateries, but HakkaChow remains one of the Triad’s most beloved spots for sushi, gyoza, and cocktails. The ladies of Forsyth Woman and I visited HakkaChow on a Wednesday evening and were served a multi-course dinner by the lovely and attentive Abigail, alongside owner Jonathan Chung. As a budding sushi enthusiast and HakkaChow frequenter, I was nothing short of elated to be able to get up close and personal with the establishment’s newest menu items.

HakkaChow’s location and stylish dining room provide patrons with an elevated Asian cuisine experience. Perfect for a date night or a casual business lunch, HakkaChow’s versatile lunch, dinner, sushi, and cocktail menus keep customers coming back meal after meal. Some of the Triad’s most innovative sushi rolls reside on the menu, although trusty classics such as the spicy tuna roll and California roll have always been my go-to order for a light lunch. In fact, HakkaChow offers a convenient and budget-friendly sushi lunch special with your choice of any two or three rolls from a select menu combined with soup or salad. Craving a bit of beef on top of your sushi? One of my favorite specialty rolls, the Surf and Turf Roll, includes kani, asparagus, cucumber, tuna, yellowtail, and savory Korean BBQ beef, drizzled with spicy aioli and Korean hot sauce for a well-rounded, spicy sushi combination.

Although Wednesdays offer all mojito cocktails $2 off, the ladies and I were craving a white wine to accompany our sushi. After settling in with a glass of sauvignon blanc, we were provided with steamed and fried Kobe Beef Dumplings straight from the restaurant’s revamped menu. Filled with wagyu beef, shiitake mushrooms, scallions, and sweet potato noodles, the dumplings paired perfectly with the soyginger dipping sauce and Korean hot sauce on the side.

We were next provided with crispy Crab Wontons with a chili oil-infused lemongrass sauce, in addition to the unmatched Kimchi Cheese Fries appetizer for a spicy sriracha kick. It goes without saying that HakkaChow’s extensive offering of delicious appetizers makes it difficult to save room in your stomach for sushi.

Our first sushi entree was the incredible Salmon Tartare Roll consisting of cream cheese, Kani salad, cucumber, and salmon tartare. The roll was followed by the striking HakkaChow’s Sushi Tower. Layered with sushi rice, spicy tuna, crab salad, and avocado, and topped with Bulgogi, this is the perfect sharing entree with family and friends. Even novice sushi eaters can find solace in giving spicy tuna a try with the iconic Sushi Tower.

We wrapped up the evening with our final entrée, the Kung Pao Shrimp, stir-fried with roasted chili, peanuts, onions, mushrooms, carrots, green peppers, and zucchini. While we were a bit too full for dessert, ask your server for the restaurant’s selection of sweet treats to cleanse your palate before heading home. With the help of Abigail, Jonathan, and the wonderful chefs, HakkaChow’s chic interior, dining experience, and service were exceptional from start to finish.

Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially for larger parties, as tables fill up quickly during prime dining time. Visit HakkaChow at 615 St George Square Ct in Winston-Salem, and view the menu and order online at www.hakka-chow.com. Book a reservation using the OpenTable app, or call the restaurant directly at (336) 893-8178. Gift certificates are available for purchase in-store.

BE A Nice CUSTOMER

No doubt you’ve noticed how happy employees translate into happy customers. At least most of the time. But it isn’t only the boss who determines an employee’s “happiness.” Exit interviews with frontline employees reveal that how customers treat them can be a major factor in their decision to look for greener pastures... and nicer customers.

Who could blame them?

When you think about it, every human interaction is a reciprocal exchange. Words, facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language are the vehicles that convey our intentions. They help to make or break our experiences and the relationships we create. Instead of building or mending bridges, we sometimes inadvertently burn them.

We may even adopt the position that “It’s on them, not me.” Well, I don’t buy that for one minute. Why? Because we are the cocreators of our own experience, every experience, no exceptions. It’s why “I’m sorry” and “I apologize” exist in the first place! As a culture, we seemed to have shied away from timeless truisms like:

• Be nice to others and they will be nice to you

• Respect everyone

• Treat others how you would want to be treated

• Please and Thank You matter

And so on.

Are we feeling a bit entitled? I wonder. Or have we just gotten lazy with our courtesy? After all, it hardly seems to matter online. Or maybe we are just plain tired.

I was tired the other day when I needed to question a medical bill. Well, I wasn’t just tired. I was stressed, weary, and annoyed. Now there’s a tricky combo! As much as I wanted to dial that 800-billing number, I cooled my heels and stepped back, knowing that I wasn’t in the best frame of mind to deal with the issue or to create the type of experience worthy of who and how I want to be. What about you? Have you considered when and why you may sometimes treat others with less than who and how you want to be? Whatever may be at the root of our less than exemplary customer behavior, we can turn it around – one experience at a time. Here’s how:

Choose to hold the belief that we are each other’s customer: It doesn’t matter who is the “employee” and who is the “customer.” We have mutual accountability as we are all human.

Now put yourself in their shoes: It’s not easy to please customers day in and day out, whether it’s face to face, on the phone, or in an online chat. That rep is challenged to put her best self forward with every customer, every time, regardless of how her boss or her previous customer has treated her.

Treat them as you would want to be treated: Kindness, respect, courtesy. It’s all of the little things that create a positive experience. Use her name if you know it. Thank her for that helpful bit of information. Ask how her day is going and extend some empathy her way if you sense she needs it. Be human in the best ways!

Be generous with genuine compliments: False compliments are hollow, and they are beneath you. Instead notice what she does well and let her know: “I so appreciate your patience, Ebony.” “Thanks for summarizing that in a way I can really understand.” “You’ve been awesome, Adam.” Your genuine appreciation might be just the booster shot that rep needs to get through the rest of their shift.

Own it when you screw up: Did you know that others respect us more when we take responsibility for our mistakes? Mistakes level the playing field and create common ground. Saying something like: “Oops, my bad. I gave you the wrong info” will do it.

Reward them with a great review and your return business: I don’t often leave specific, positive feedback for a service rep. But when that rep has been stellar, singing their praises is a gift I give wholeheartedly – the perfect “wrap” to a great experience.

French Dip Sandwiches

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Sprinkle of salt and pepper

2 pounds chuck roast

½ onion, quartered

2 cups beef broth, low sodium

1 whole bay leaf

12 slices provolone cheese

Sandwich bread of your choice (examples: sub rolls, onion rolls, sliced baguette loaf)

*For a balanced meal, serve French dip sandwiches with a vegetable and fruit.

INSTRUCTIONS

Add oil to a large pot.

Sprinkle salt and pepper to each side of the chuck roast. Add roast to pan and sear each side over high heat.

Place seared roast into a slow cooker and add the quartered onion slices, beef broth and bay leaf.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours. When the roast is done cooking, remove it from the slow cooker and use a fork to shred it into chunks or pieces.

Use a slotted spoon to pull the onions from the broth. Set onions aside to serve on top of sandwiches, if desired.

The Recipe for a Good Story

When I pick up a new book in a certain genre, there are specific elements I hope the book will have. For example, if I am reading a mystery novel, I expect there will be an area of suspense and clues that lead up to a fulfilling conclusion. If I am reading a Nicholas Sparks book, I know there will probably be a romance based in North Carolina, at least one death of a character, and a somber tale somewhere in the book. This thinking can be said for many readers. They often gravitate towards a favorite genre because of the elements associated with that genre. There are many recipes for good stories, but certain elements or ingredients are needed to create an established taste. And when those elements are mixed together, a wonderful tale is the result.

Of course, some of the elements are subjective and vary from reader to reader. Yet, there are many that hold true to making a genre. Do your elements needed for a good story fit the recipes below?

The Recipe for a Good Story - A Bases for All Fiction Genres

• A variety of characters including a protagonist (the main character) and an antagonist (an opposing force your protagonist will have conflict with, such as a character, the setting, weather, etc.) All characters should have a purpose; a reason for being included in the story. Their dialogue should help characterize them and we are clearly able to see who they are, while still being left with a sense of mystery to make inferences about their thoughts and actions. There is a balance of showing and telling about the characters from the author. Lastly, the characters are well-thought out and aren’t perfect. These characters are humans and flawed.

• A strong plot that flows from its opening that draws you in, through its steady middle, and to its conclusive ending. For me, I prefer my books to tie up in the end, unless there is a sequel. Also, a plot that doesn’t have you flipping back to the previous pages to figure out the connections between events and dialogue.

• Conflict - It can be large or small, but there must be a challenge in the book. Descriptive Details - Again, show the reader, while also telling the reader the who, what, when, where, why, and how of all the characters and events.

• Originality - I have read many books with the same plot foundation and just a change here and there. All good stories should be different, avoid common cliches, and common plot structures. Yes, there is only so much an author can do to an extent, but originality is a must. It is very refreshing to read a book with varying perspectives in each chapter or how the hero may not save the day.

Looking genre specific, there are a few more ingredients needed to strengthen the novel. The elements are in addition to the ones listed above.

The Recipe for a Good Mystery and Thriller

• All clues are developed, descriptive, and readers are able to see what the author was thinking when they created the mystery. There are some mystery books I have encountered that needed a little more explanation to help the reader see into the author’s mind. These stories went from point A (this happened) to point B (the character did something) with little to no detail

• Powerful Ending - No reader wants to read a hundred plus pages, sitting on the edge of their seat, waiting to solve the mystery to have the novel come to a humdrum conclusion.

The Recipe for a Good Romance

• An Unpredictable Ending - The novel In Five Years by Rebecca Serle does a good job of this. The story leads you to believe there will be a predictable romantic ending with the main characters. However, right at the end, there is an unexpected twist. (Sorry, spoiler alert!)

• Likable Characters - This doesn’t pertain to every genre, but in a romance, the characters need to be engaging, in order for the reader to follow the story.

The Recipe for a Good Nonfiction

• Clear and Engaging Style of Writing - A nonfiction book is different from fiction books, since the information in the novel is all true and fact based. Nonfiction books are usually read less than fiction ones. Nonfiction stories need to be engaging and clear to read from start to finish.

• Quickly Get to the Point of the Topic, Issue, Problem, or Solution - A nonfiction book should state early on what the book is about and take the reader on a journey to learning more about the topic.

• An Impactful Title - With any book, a title is what pulls most readers in. For nonfiction books, I want to know exactly what I am reading about before opening the first page.

Good stories vary from person to person. Yet, there are common elements, characteristics, and ingredients that separate the okay stories from the good and great ones.

Making the Most of the Solo Life

For All the Single Ladies

Fed up with being single? Listen up, all y’all single ladies (and while you’re at it, turn up that Beyoncé song, along with Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself”). However long it’s been since you’ve been in a relationship, don’t despair. Count your solo stint as a blessing in disguise. Delve deeper into the search to know and unconditionally love yourself. This is an ideal time to get to know yourself in depth and figure out where you are and who you want to be with. And, definitely don’t skimp on self-care. Here is some reallife motivation and inspiration for you from another worthy woman who’s spent plenty of life being single.

The feeling of loneliness and self-doubt can creep in when life isn’t going the way you’d like it to. But I’m here to tell you that you are not alone and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel! It may seem like a daunting task to be single and take on life’s challenges on your own, but it can be done - and you can be successful, fulfilled, and happy. The most important thing to remember is that you are the only one who can make your dreams come true. No one else can do it for you.

Life can be tough, but don’t forget that you are strong and capable. When things don’t go your way, remind yourself that it’s just part of the journey and that you will come out even stronger. You can always make the most of a situation if you use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

One of my favorite sassy sayings is, “Never let anyone dull your sparkle.” No matter who you are or where you come from, you have something special and unique to offer the world. Celebrate your independence and never settle for less than you deserve.

Here’s an inspirational quote to empower you and celebrate being single:

“A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman.” - Melinda Gates

“You are your own greatest asset. Put your time, effort and money into training, grooming and encouraging your greatest asset.” - Beyonce

“You can’t be that kid standing at the top of the waterslide, overthinking it. You have to go down the chute.” - Tina Fey

“If your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough.”

“The most effective way to do it, is to do it.”- Amelia Earhart

“Women are the real architects of society.” - Harriet Beecher Stowe

“Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” - Michelle Obama

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” - Helen Keller

“The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who’s going to stop me.”

- Ayn Rand

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” - Steve Jobs

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney

Focus on what you can do, rather than what you can’t. Don’t let your current circumstances define you. Take action and be proactive. Invest in yourself by learning new skills, developing new interests or starting a new business. Surround yourself with people who inspire and motivate you. Find a support group or mentor who can help guide you. Life may not always be easy, but with determination and the courage to take risks, you can create the life you desire.

No matter what your situation, you always have the opportunity to create a positive and fulfilling life for yourself.

So, don’t be discouraged if you’re single right now. You can create a life of joy, passion and fulfillment - and you don’t need anyone else to do it for you. Believe in yourself and trust that you can make your dreams a reality. You are strong, capable and worthy of a beautiful life.

“The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.”
- Diane Von Furstenberg

UNLEASH THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF STRENGTH TRAINING

Are you ready to unleash the transformative power of strength training in your life? This guide is your ticket to unlocking a world of health, strength, and vitality like never before. Strength training is not just for the young and fit; it’s for everyone, including women of ALL ages. So grab a cup of tea, get cozy, and let’s dive right in!

THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING FOR WOMEN Building and Maintaining Muscle Mass

As you get older and wiser, hormonal changes can take a toll on your precious muscle mass. But fear not! Strength training is here to save the day. By engaging in regular resistance exercises like deadlifts, squats, and lunges, you can stimulate muscle-building stem cells and combat the decline. Think of these powerful movements as your secret weapon to feeling like a true warrior goddess in no time.

Boosting Metabolic Rate

Who doesn’t want a metabolism that’s firing on all cylinders? Strength training is the secret sauce to revving up your metabolic engine. By increasing your muscle mass, you’ll elevate your metabolic rate, both during exercise and at rest. This means more calories burned, more energy to fuel your day, and a better chance at managing your weight like a boss.

Improving Bone Density

Ladies, let’s talk about your bones. Beginning in our 40s, it is a critical time when bone density can take a hit. By challenging your bones with weight-bearing exercises like deadlifts, squats, and lunges, you’ll stimulate them to become stronger and denser. It’s time to build a solid foundation for your future health!

Enhancing Cardiovascular and General Health

Strength training is not just about building muscles; it’s a holistic game-changer for your overall well-being. Regular resistance exercises improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure, reduce visceral fat, and give your immune system a serious boost. You’ll not only be rocking a healthier heart but also reducing your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular issues. And let’s not forget the mental perks – those feel-good endorphins will have you smiling from ear to ear!

GETTING STARTED WITH STRENGTH TRAINING

Now that you’re ready to embark on this empowering journey, let’s dive into some practical tips to get you started on the right foot:

1. Consult with a Healthcare Professional: Before diving into any new exercise program, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare professional. They’ll evaluate your individual needs and provide personalized recommendations based on your health status.

2. Set Clear Goals: To stay motivated and focused, set clear goals for your strength training journey. Whether it’s increasing strength, improving bone density, or sculpting your physique, having specific targets will keep you driven and committed.

3. Learn Proper Form and Technique: Correct form is key to reaping the benefits of strength training while avoiding injuries. Consider working with a qualified fitness professional who can guide you through proper technique, alignment, and execution of each exercise.

4. Start with Mobility and Stability Exercises: If you’re new to strength training, begin with mobility and stability exercises. These movements improve joint mobility, flexibility, and core stability, setting the stage for more intense workouts to come.

5. Gradually Increase Intensity and Weight: As you gain confidence and strength, gradually ramp up the intensity and weight of your exercises. Challenge yourself by increasing repetitions, sets, or adding more resistance. Your muscles will thank you for the extra push!

6. Rest and Recovery: Remember, rest is as vital as the workouts themselves. Allow your body enough time to recover between strength training sessions to prevent overtraining and promote optimal results. Aim for at least 48 hours of rest between workouts targeting the same muscle group.

7. Monitor Your Progress: Keep track of your journey by recording your workouts, weights lifted, and any changes in strength or body composition. This will help you stay motivated, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate your wins along the way.

There you have it, my incredible powerhouses! Strength training is your secret weapon to achieving optimal health, strength, and vitality. By embracing resistance exercises, you’ll build and maintain muscle mass, boost your metabolism, improve bone density, and enhance your overall cardiovascular health. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional, set clear goals, learn proper form, and gradually progress to ensure a safe and effective strength training journey. It’s time to show the world what you’re made of – so grab those weights, lift heavy stuff, and unleash the incredible benefits that await you!

Let’s rock this strength training journey together, one powerful lift at a time. You’ve got this!

A Novel Idea

I am always on the hunt for a good book. Once I finish one, I am quickly opening the pages to my next book that was on my long list of suggestions. Many people, including myself, get most of their suggested reads from their friends and family. Other sources for suggestions are social media, reviews, and browsing through stores, but word of mouth still remains popular as it allows readers a more personalized summary of what the book could hold. Due to this, events, such as blind dates with a book and book exchange parties, have started popping up amongst book lovers. Book exchange or book swap parties are fun and creative ways to, well, exchange new books with your friends or loved ones in a party atmosphere. They are easy to host, don’t take much time to prepare for, and everyone goes home with a new tale to read.

First, as with any party, decide on the necessary information (date, time, and theme) and send out the invitations. A theme for a book exchange party can put a festive spin on the occasion. Maybe you choose to center your event on only new reads, mystery books, bestsellers, young adult, nonfiction, or vacation reads. Whatever your theme is, make sure it is easily accessible for all guests to participate in, since they will be bringing the books. Also, your celebration doesn’t have to include a theme. No matter what, your guests will still have fun.

Speaking of guests bringing books, this is the foundation of a book exchange. On your invitation, ask each of your guests to bring a book, in new or good condition, to give away to another guest. In return, they will get a book to take home and enjoy. In addition, ask your guests to come with their novel wrapped and a small note attached to the outside. Wrapping paper is a fun option or you can use brown paper and decorate it with items related to the story. On the note, don’t include the title or the author, but do include details about the book’s plot, genre, why you loved it, and a few key words or phrases related to the story. This way all of the stories will be kept a surprise.

As guests arrive, have a designated spot for them to place and display their books. Then, give your guests time to browse through the selection. Once everyone has looked through the novels, gather everyone around to officially exchange selections. Hold the official exchange as a group instead of individually. Go around

How to Host a Crowd Pleasing Book Exchange

in a circle and let each guest read the small note on the cover, then unwrap their choice. Put a spin on the unwrapping and have people guess the book’s title based on the descriptions in the note. Of course, don’t say the title aloud if you brought the selection. On each turn, the participant can either keep their unwrapped book or steal from someone else. The person being stolen from does have the option to say “no” to the switch. Think of a Christmas white elephant gift swap. People can go through several rounds before all landing on their final book.

If you are invited to a book exchange and don’t know which novel to bring, think about your favorites or ones you have recently read and enjoyed. Make sure you bring a book that you have already read and loved.

While trading is the main part of the party, you can also host literary-themed games, such as “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” where people guess what book a famous line is from, trivia-style questions, and Literary Charades with guests acting out a famous novel, character, or author. Have literary-themed prizes available for the winners.

Don’t forget about the food and refreshments. It depends on the type of book exchange you are planning to host, but simple finger foods are always crowd pleasers. Lastly, before guests part ways, give them a little party favor. Some ideas are a bookmark, a pen and notebook to jot down their reading reflections, or a mug to enjoy something to drink while reading. Party favors aren’t required, of course, since guests are already going home with a book, but do add that extra touch.

Book exchange parties are perfect get-togethers, not just for book lovers, but for everyone who loves a good time. What book would you bring to a book exchange?

Mindfulness

to your day

Imagine focusing on your awareness and being present from moment to moment without rushing through each day. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? With our fast-paced life, we forget to pause and be aware of each moment. “Being mindful” are buzzwords that we use, however, we may not actually practice mindfulness or even understand how to be more mindful. Our minds tend to constantly think, analyze and problem solve. But if we are more present and are mindful in the moment, which does not come naturally to many of us, it causes us to pause and be still. It encourages us to be aware of what is happening and what we are feeling in the moment. There are many benefits to practicing mindfulness. Some of the benefits include reducing stress and anxiety, helping with pain management, reducing symptoms of depression, slowing down the brain from aging, improving cognitive ability and increasing a sense of well-being.

So how do you become more mindful? It’s a bit more challenging than you think. To start being more mindful, it’s helpful to focus on your breath. Your breath is the constant that you can keep coming back to when you need to recenter and slow down. Become more aware of your breath and how it feels to breathe. After you have practiced focusing on your breathing, you can add other mindfulness practices into your day such as mindful eating and mindful activity.

BREATH WORK:

Breath work means focusing on your breathing and noticing the sensations that are occurring. Feel the rise and fall of your chest when you are breathing. Is the air coming in and out of your nose or are you breathing through your mouth? Notice how each breath feels. Notice the temperature of the air coming inside of your body. How fast or slow are you breathing? Give it a try right now! Close your eyes, pause, and take a few breaths while you focus on the sensations of each breath.

Look at that! You were just mindful and you were practicing mindfulness by focusing on your breathing.

MINDFUL EATING:

Once you’ve practiced breath work and you are ready to take mindfulness to other areas of your day, consider being mindful while you are eating. Mindful eating means you are going to focus on your body, the food in front of you and how your body reacts as you begin to eat each bite of food. To start, try pausing before making your plate or taking a few bites of food. Center yourself by focusing on a few breaths. What food is catching your eye the most? Why is that food standing out? Notice how your body feels before you begin eating. What is your level of hunger? As you begin eating, notice each and every bite. It may help you to place your fork or spoon down between bites so that you do not rush to the next bite. As you are eating each food, notice the flavor. Notice how it feels and how your hunger level begins to change with each bite. And when you’ve noticed your hunger level has improved and you are beginning to feel satisfied, pause and stop eating. Are you done with your meal? Mindful eating can help with digestion, not eating too fast, noticing if we truly like or do not like food and preventing overeating.

MINDFUL ACTIVITY:

Doing activity mindfully means you are focused on what you are doing in the moment. You are focused on your body, how your body is feeling, thinking about the move your body is doing and how it is strengthening you. To practice mindful activity, try mindfully walking. You do not have to add a walk to your daily routine but use a walk you already do and practice stepping mindfully. For example, practice mindfulness as you walk into work. Whether your walk is short or long, you can focus on each step. Aim to keep your mind on each step and your breath as you walk into work versus rushing in and thinking about all the tasks that need to be done today. It helps center us, prepare us for the day and it can also reduce stress. Who doesn’t want the extra help of reducing stress before a workday? No matter the physical activity you are doing, whether it’s walking, lifting weights, or even golfing, you can practice mindfulness and focus on each movement and how your body is feeling in that moment. You will end each activity feeling satisfied, knowing your body is working to get stronger.

Dropping Off & Picking Up Your Laundry Just Got A Lot Easier!

We’ve all been there. You left work late because of a staff meeting and you have that one last stop before you can go home and relax…the dry cleaners! You have a big breakfast seminar in the morning and you need to pick up your blouse or dress shirt for the morning. You get stuck in traffic and make it to the dry cleaners 15 minutes after they close. That sinking feeling when all the lights are out at the cleaners and your order is ready, but you can’t get to it, is the worst. For customers of Woshbox in Clemmons, NC, that scenario is a thing of the past with their new ‘365 Kiosk,’ where you can drop off and pick up after hours and on holidays, making life a whole lot easier!

ALWAYS LOOKING FOR ADVANCEMENTS TO HELP CUSTOMERS

You Jung opened his first dry cleaners in Clemmons, Crystal Cleaners, in 2003 after moving to the area with his wife from South Korea. As he grew to understand what customers truly wanted from their cleaners, the idea of Woshbox formed and now there are three locations including Clemmons (formerly Crystal Cleaners).

Woshbox has become the go-to dry cleaner and laundry service for customers who want to have a bit more time in their daily lives and let someone else deal with their laundry!

“Woshbox is member of a dry cleaning association in the USA, helping us to educate ourselves on improving our services and understanding our customers’ needs. In 2022, we went to an event in Las Vegas, where we saw this awesome system that can help our customers have access to their cleaning orders after hours. We are all about customer convenience, that’s why we offer free pickups and delivery, and now with 365 Kiosk, they don’t have to rush to get their cleaning!” said Massiel Tovar, Manager at Woshbox.

AS EASY AS IT GETS!

The 365 Kiosk process is as easy as it gets!

“Customers can set up an account with us either online at getwoshbox.com or in person at one of our locations. After customers drop off an order with us, we will process it. When it is ready, our customer will receive a message with a barcode, their ID, and a lot number. They can then come by, after hours, at their convenience, scan the barcode, and get their order from the 365 Kiosk.

Currently, this service is only at the Clemmons location, but we hope to implement it at our other locations soon. There is no upcharge for this service and the only requirement is that you have an account with Woshbox and a credit card on file to process the payment when the order is ready,” Massiel commented.

KNOWING YOUR BUSINESS STARTS WITH KNOWING YOUR CUSTOMERS

Woshbox began their expansion in 2020, right at the beginning of the Covid restrictions, giving You and Massiel a perspective of how, not only was Woshbox affected, but how their customers dealt with the change to their lives.

“After the past few years, with all the price increases of everything, we came up with the idea of a VIP membership to help our customers by giving them a 20% discount on all drying cleaning and laundry services every time they visit with us. It is totally free and the only requirements are to have a credit card on file and an email so we can send them the best deals every week. At Woshbox, we focus on making the customer experience the best it can be!” stated Massiel.

Woshbox locations: 3608 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC, 336.712.3155; 133 Oakwood Drive, 336.725.3773 and 5061 University Parkway, 336.602.2860, both in WinstonSalem, NC. For more information, visit www. getwoshbox.com.

Conversations with Your BFF

How Can I Become a Stronger Version of Myself?

YOU GOTTA HAVE FAITH’

Maybe George Michael was onto something when he said, “You gotta’ have faith!” If you have no idea what I am referencing, look it up. There are periods in life when all looks hopeless and we feel helpless. Even at our lowest, if we have faith in tomorrow being a better day, we can make it through our valleys on the way to life’s peaks. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is a good way to live.

TAKE A HINT FROM ELSA AND “LET IT GO”

Nothing good comes from hanging on to people that were only meant to be a lesson and not a chapter in your life. Letting go is never easy, but when you learn to stop living in the past and dragging those from your past into your present and then future, the future takes on an entirely new light.

GRUDGES ONLY HURT YOU

One of the hardest things to do at any age is to forgive someone who never says “I’m sorry” or doesn’t ask for forgiveness. As humans we tend to hang onto grudges. Hate has a way of consuming you and you’re not hurting the person who did you wrong. Resentment has a way of growing and taking over one’s self and it is no way to live. Anger, bitterness, and revenge, have no place in the life of a stronger version of you.

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK

How many times have you heard or told your BFF, “Put your big girl panties on and deal with it”? If it were only as easy as changing one’s undies, we’d all be stronger in dealing with life and times and people that bring us down. But although it’s a good, yet trite comeback, how can you really become a stronger you?’ I am so glad you asked!

THERE ARE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED

Becoming a strong woman requires learning some hard life lessons; some lessons are learned early in life and others later in life, but each leads you down the road to being a stronger YOU!

YOU CAN’T SAVE EVERYONE

One of the hardest things in the world is to cut people out of your life, but you can’t save

everyone, especially if they don’t seem to want to be saved or helped. There are family and friends who just need to be cut out of your life, despite how much you love them. If you keep pursuing someone with ways to help them and they have no interest in changing, you can wear yourself out…and some people just don’t want to change because they love to wallow in their mess and have excuses as to why life is so tough for them.

DON’T SETTLE FOR SCRAPS

How many times have you accepted the scraps of someone’s attention when you know you deserve more? We get upset because people treat us a certain way, when with each interaction with those in our lives, we teach them what we will tolerate. If someone doesn’t see your worth as a person in their life, you need to let them go or at least put distance between you and them.

If you do some introspection, and you truly know you are doing your best as a person in the area of self-love and self-respect, don’t hold yourself to an impossible standard. If you don’t appreciate yourself and all you’ve gone through, you can’t expect anyone else to appreciate you either. In the end, the only person who can truly make a difference in your happiness is YOU! Be in charge of your life and make yourself a priority.

Each one of these lessons will help you see just how strong you are and you can be very proud of the scars you have, some self-inflicted, but others attributable to different people in your life. Regardless, both have combined to make you who you are. Stand strong and love the person you become each day and don’t worry about those big girl panties!
