the publisher perspective

Did you know May is mental Health Month? As someone who has personally struggled with my mental health, I believe it’s crucial to continue raising awareness about this significant issue. While I am happy to see the stigma surrounding anxiety and depression medication slowly fading, I recognize that there’s still progress to be made, especially concerning the mental health of men. Men are often expected to be strong and resilient, which can make it challenging for them to openly discuss their struggles. This is a reminder to check in on the mental health of your family and friends. Often those that appear the strongest are the ones closest to their breaking point.

This month, we’re honored to share several articles related to mental health:

- Embracing Mental Health Month: Family Ties (page 36)

- Self-Love for a Better You (page 40)

- Learning to Lean Into Your Emotional Strengths and Weaknesses (page 66)

- Inaugural Black Mental Health Summit (page 90)

May is also Mother’s Day! I’d like to give a shoutout to my incredible mom, who is not only my mother but also my business partner and friend. We continue to work hard on our relationship, and I’m proud of where we are. I am a big believer in the importance of nurturing ALL the relationships in your life – not just the one with your partner or spouse. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside my mom every day. She’s passionate, lively and she tends to get a little too wound up when she has too much coffee (LOL!), but I love her so much! Happy Mother’s Day, Momma!

We’re thrilled to feature the beautiful Christy Spencer on our cover this month. She and her husband own Robert Hall, a stunning venue in downtown Winston-Salem. I remember Christy giving me a tour of the space when it was just a vision, and it’s been incredible to witness her vision come to life. You can read all about Robert Hall on page 48..

A few weeks ago, we hosted our third annual Women on the Move conference. It was the BEST day, and I was floating on cloud 9 for several days afterward. We’re already brainstorming ideas for 2025 – you won’t want to miss it. Check out some fun photos and a recap of the day beginning on page 82.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Girls’ Night Out on May 8th at MidTown Cafe and Dessertery. The weather should be perfect for hanging out on their stunning patio. Learn more on page 77.

Finally, I want to encourage you to read the article on page 22. This month, we’re featuring Annie Sims with the Winston-Salem Police Department. Recruitment is at an all-time high, and it’s no accident that Annie is involved in that. Here at Forsyth Woman Magazine, we love to see a woman taking on a role that has historically been male-dominated. We’re cheering for you, Annie!

Wishing you a fabulous month of May!

Live Like Norah

OSecond Annual Galantine Gala -

Women Coming Together for a Good Cause

n November 4, 2021, the Smitherman family – Rodney, Jennifer, Miah and Annah lost their beloved daughter and sister, Norah, when she was killed by a classmate. Life as usual ceased to exist for the family; the plans that Norah had for her future, preparations for her college years, ended in a senseless act. No one can prepare for a loss like the Smitherman family experienced because how does one anticipate such a loss of a 17-year-old just beginning her life? In the two and a half years since, the family founded Live Like Norah Foundation, a nonprofit 501 (c) 3, initially offering scholarships to Yadkin County high school seniors, in an effort to do something positive in light of the tragedy of Norah’s loss. The support for LLN Foundation has been overwhelming, leading the family to reach out to other areas in Yadkinville to serve in Norah’s name. As a thank you to the community and to honor the memory of Norah, the LLN Foundation hosted their Second Annual Live Like Norah Galantine Gala at Sanders Ridge Vineyard and Winery in Boonville, NC, bringing together women to continue the mission of the foundation.

A LEGACY THAT CONTINUES TO GROW

As Jennifer Smitherman, Norah’s mother, looks back on when LLN Foundation began, she is thankful for the many who have supported the family and the cause.

“Our first goal with the foundation was to give scholarships in Norah’s name to high school seniors at Forbush and Starmount High. Students are asked to complete an essay on what they think it means to Live Like Norah and then have interviews with board members. Norah led a life of service in her community, through school and activities in her church. She had a strong faith in Christ and that was at her core; everything about her grew from that part of her,” said Jennifer.

As the foundation has grown, so has the outreach of the charity. There is a Live Like Norah Rayne Retail Store featuring gift ideas like candles, garden flags, wind chimes, florals and faith-based apparel. The foundation also gives funds to support Cru Missionaries in

Croatia, youth mission trips, Yadkin County Disciple Now, Laurel Ridge Moravian Camp and many other local charities. The Galantine Gala has become the way ladies in the community can come together and raise additional funds for the foundation.

MAKING NEW FRIENDS AND NEW MEMORIES

This year’s Gala was held on February 3, 2024 and had a change in venue with Sanders Ridge Vineyard and Winery in Boonville, NC. “We had 117 guests for the gala, many ladies came with their best friend and our overall theme of FRIENDS remained the same, but our specific theme was taken from Galatians 5:22-23 ‘but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.’ Each attendee went home with three remembrances from the night; a rose from the table, a painted rock from Deborah Smith of East Bend and wax melts in the shape of hearts contained in a heart box celebrating the upcoming Valentine’s Day. Regal Catering provided the food and desserts were made by Amanda Joyner of Manny J’s Bakery. Our beautiful balloon decorations were made possible by House of Posh. Everyone involved went all out for this beautiful night of sharing with friends, including those who donated for our door prizes. After our meal, guest

speaker Dena Cave shared a message focused on the fruits of the spirit, and she was inspirational with her humor and transparent delivery of the scripture. It was truly a night of making memories with special friends,” said Jennifer.

Keeping It Real

IS GOD REAL?

Is God real? Inquiring minds want to know!

Even those, ESPECIALLY THOSE, who deny God’s existence secretly contemplate this as they reach the end of their rope and need someone bigger to do the heavy lifting.

Consider this. At any given second of the day or night, 20 different people search the internet for, “Is God Real?”

Let your mind compute what I just said. Twenty people PER SECOND ask Google if an actual God is out there somewhere!

When the world’s foundations shake and our lives feel tossed like dice, we get to the end of ourselves QUICK! No matter how self-sufficient we consider ourselves, we suddenly feel ridiculously small and out of control.

Because we are literally created BY God and exist FOR God, our hearts are restless until we find our rest and purpose in HIM!

While Christians sometimes do a poor job of describing and displaying the authenticity of this Marvelous and Wonderful God, it never diminishes the Magnificence of who He is! He’s infinitely greater, better, stronger, wiser AND closer than we imagine!

In the turbulence of our times, severe anxiety and depression have accelerated right off the charts! Five minutes of morning news is enough to keep you horizontal, hiding, never venturing beyond your safe space.

Friend, calamities are here. More are coming. If you already wear crisis fatigue, you’re in big trouble without some real changes…now! I don’t know much, but I know this…in the nearing months, there’s going to be a WHOLE LOT of shaking going on!

I don’t say this to scare you. I say it for the sake of preparing you.

We already cart around levels of stress our bodies simply cannot keep carrying. The long-term effects put people in the grave long before their time. We must look to Someone who is more than able to carry us and all we carry!

Is God real? Somewhere deep down in your knower, you know He is. The evidence far outweighs any arguments against this reality. TRULY! It takes much more faith to deny God than it takes to believe in Him! (A great book for skeptics is “Is Atheism Dead?” by Eric Metaxas. Check it out!)

But folks, it’s not enough to believe God is real! So, what if He’s legit, if He is so entirely disconnected and detached from me and all that matters to me?!

Good news…God is as close as you want Him to be!

If you’re wondering or if you’re wandering…please know this All-Knowing and Ever-Faithful Father who made you for Himself is not out of reach. He doesn’t hide from you, and you can never hide from Him. He delights in making Himself accessible to you. In fact, He waits to be wanted.

"God’s there, listening for all who pray, for all who pray and mean it." (Psalm 145:18 MSG)

This REAL God is not mad at you. He’s not keeping a list and checking it twice to see if you’ve been naughty or nice. He’s a loving Father that made all there is for you and then made you for Himself. You matter THAT MUCH to Him! He has gone to great lengths to get where you are and even greater lengths to bring you where He is…not just when you die but RIGHT NOW! He provides ALL YOU NEED to live the Overcoming Life THIS DAY!

This Faithful and Everlasting God says to YOU:

“When you come looking for Me, you’ll find Me.

“Yes, when you get serious about finding Me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” (Jeremiah 29:13 MSG)

I promise you on my very life, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Celebrating Mothers, Daughters & Personal Style!

Always – but especially in the month of May – we cherish celebrating our mothers! We reminisce over fond family memories and sentimental events, while wondering what to wear to next month’s wedding, graduation or other soon-to-be memorable family moment.

Nothing defines Fraleigh’s in Clemmons more than family – and this popular boutique has been guiding women in their search for the perfect clothing and accessories to enhance their personal style for 42 years. Still going strong, being family owned and operated means everything at Fraleigh’s, and Owner Donna Merriman knows her success would simply be non-existent if it wasn’t for the unconditional love and support of her own family through the years.

“My mom and dad are the ones who believed in me and my dream of owning a clothing store,” said Donna. “I was blessed to have a business partner of 30+ years who not only was my mom, but also my best friend!”

Since the tender age of 15, Donna has known a passion for clothing – and couldn’t be more thankful she was able to realize her dream of owning a local boutique with her mother, Mary, by her side. Fraleigh’s opened in August of 1981 with Donna and Mary soon earning the reputation of the friendliest, most fashionable mother-daughter team in town. That privilege is now reserved for Donna and her daughter-in-law, Ally Merriman, who has become the trusted other half of the team since Mary’s passing in 2020. If you’re not local to Clemmons, here’s a bit of trivia: The boutique’s name evolved from Mary’s middle name, Francis (Fra) and Donna’s middle name of Leigh (Leigh) – and the name still symbolizes a love of style, personalized service and never treating clients as anything but close, close family.

If you’re shopping for an important occasion or simply looking to freshen your closet now for spring and summer, Fraleigh’s is the gathering spot for clothing, costume jewelry, shoes, bags, hats and scarves. Everything on the boutique floor is hand-picked by Donna and Ally at the market four times a year, and from their well-established vendor relationships who have a keen eye for Fraleigh’s customers, as well. Given their long-running success in the Clemmons area, it’s quite common for several generations to shop together at Fraleigh’s – and there’s nothing better than a mother-daughter adventure to find a perfect outfit.

Offering the best blend of trendy and timeless, both Donna and Ally enjoy bringing pieces they know clients will adore back to the boutique. That includes every look from blue jeans to professional, and every mood in between. We’ve all come to look forward to “live” visits with Donna on Facebook and Instagram (every Sunday through Friday), excited that we’ll get a glimpse of any new collections in the boutique and discover a delightful piece that might be the spark of color we’ve been craving! Donna often shares interesting ways to pair new pieces and accessories – while keeping her “shared” time with customers –those that are local as well as those from across the country – a fun, personable experience. After all, that’s what family does!

Visit Fraleigh’s soon to update your look for the summer months, and take a moment to savor the personal touches that set this beloved boutique apart. Fraleigh’s is conveniently located at 2626 Lewisville-Clemmons Road in Clemmons, 336.766.7440. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @ fraleighsboutique and at Fraleighsboutiquenc.com. Boutique hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

W-S POLICE DEPARTMENT Recruitment

At An All-Time High

THE BACKDROP

Thankfully, the Coronavirus outbreak is largely now in the rearview mirror, but many organizations still feel the sting of those dark days during the height of COVID-19 when “doing whatever it takes to keep the doors open” was the mantra. Creativity and grit shone through at every turn as businesses across the country sought alternative ways to link consumers to goods and services, and people developed myriad ways to stay connected. Many companies implemented a work remotely status for their employees, but for those deemed “essential workers,” like the Winston-Salem Police Department, conducting business from home was not an option. Law enforcement, especially front-line responding, is one of the most physically and mentally taxing occupations on a “routine” day. Add in a sudden disruption to the community, pandemic challenges and necessary alterations in protocols, and the stress level rises exponentially. While law enforcement officers are highly trained to launch into catastrophic emergencies with great skill, the confluence of managing a global pandemic, a tightening labor market and heightened frustration with the policing profession (e.g. questionable police shootings and excessive force complaints) proved to be too much for many over the past few years. Between 2020-2022, the Winston-Salem Police Department, which serves the 5th largest city in the state, lost 171 officers to resignation or retirement – the highest consecutive three-year total to date. It is a well-known fact that law enforcement agencies across the US face a historic crisis in recruiting qualified potential candidates. It is time to seek new ways to recruit eligible candidates!

INNOVATION AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Enter Annie Sims, the newly hired Public Information Officer of the Winston-Salem Police Department. Sims began her career in law enforcement in 2020 at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and made the move to the WSPD in September 2023. She was hired for one purpose... to recruit diverse, qualified and community-oriented individuals using social media platforms. Having grown up in the age of the internet, like other millennials (1981-1996) and Gen Zers (1997-2012), Sims is tech savvy and values social media. Studies demonstrate that traditional recruitment methods like online job postings and career fairs are ineffective with this younger sector of the population who routinely turn to search engines and social media when actively looking for work. A recent Harris Poll reported that 85% of job seekers ages 18-43 use social media to research information about potential employers and 48% apply for positions online. In this increasingly saturated social media climate,

Annie and her team work tirelessly to attract potential applicants by keeping fresh content about the WSPD accessible and providing prompt feedback to online inquiries. As Sims shared, “Social media content is very dependent on what happens in our city, and with things changing rapidly across any given day, it is important to keep WSPD current events in front of potential recruits, as well as engage with their comments in a timely manner. I spend a lot of time after hours every night on social media responding to comments – the interpersonal communication is key, and it is worth it.”

WSPD RECRUITMENT SUCCESS

There has been a lot of recruitment success lately, and Sims credits the revamped, engaging website and separate social media platforms dedicated to recruiting (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook –photos/videos and Insta/reels) for the growth in pre-hire recruits.

As soon as the new website launched, Sims reported, “We shot up in applications, and as we started pushing more and more on social media, we saw immediate, phenomenal growth in followers – 1,800+% growth in Facebook and more than 1,300% growth in Instagram in the past six months.”

Unlike other generations, millennials and post millennials are doing their research to better understand the organization they are interested in and know what life will be like working there

22 | ForsythWoman.com

before they apply for a position. Additionally, they are looking for different things compared to pre-recruits of decades past. The nation’s largest groups of individuals applying for work in law enforcement are millennials and Gen Z. Sims has her finger on the pulse of these would-be officers and understands there are differing values and motivations that drive each group’s employment decisions. For example, millennials tend to move from organization to organization until they find the place where they feel they can make the most difference – craving purpose and an ability to be a change agent. Gen Z tend to change roles within the same organization and work their way up the proverbial career ladder – craving career growth and financial stability. Sims effectively utilizes this knowledge of her online audience to build a marketing plan and make informed decisions about social media content. The overarching goal is to build trust and confidence in the policing profession, promote a fuller understanding of the critical role law enforcement plays in our city and present clearly the multi-phase selection and hiring process in hopes of attracting highly qualified people to join the Winston-Salem Police Department.

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE

For the first time since 2020, the department is trending toward full gain with no loss in sworn officers, and the upcoming recruitment class in October is projected to have another 30 sworn officers. Although Sims is at the helm of this robust recruitment initiative, she is quick to give credit to the six officers who provide continued support and social media content, including one full-time team member, sworn Corporal Christopher Luper, (Digital Content Creator & Design Specialist) who has worked on the force for 20 years. Speaking with Annie, it is clear she views recruiting as a truly collaborative endeavor, and WSPD Chief William H Penn Jr. is quick to second that and give credit to her team’s skillful use of social media for the recent

uptick in recruitment. Social media posts and marketing material showing the human side of policing is crucial – highlighting the empathetic and collaborative aspects of daily duties; sharing short biographies of sworn officers and professional staff members in the WSPD; recounting situations in the community where lives were saved; and displaying present law enforcement in a more compassionate light in general has great appeal to millennials, Gen Z and every other generation! Additionally, Sims noted that impactful narratives, photos and videos allow potential candidates to “see themselves” in a career with the WSPD. Sims beamed when she shared the top two reasons given by the younger pre-hire recruits that resurfaced again and again during interviews when she asked, “Why?”: 1. To protect and serve the community and support people in many different ways; and 2. To make a true difference by giving back to the community and helping people who are having their worst day.

“Use a career in law enforcement to change the narrative and be the difference you want to see.”

- Annie Sims, Public Information Officer, WSPD

If you or someone you know is interested in a career with the Winston-Salem Police Department, check out the recruiting website joinwspdnow.org or call/text 336.602.4914 to speak with a recruiter. The BARN On Country Club

Beauty & Charm in Every Detail

Avisit to The Barn on Country Club is a treat for all the senses as you’ll likely take a step back in time, perhaps finding china reminiscent of your grandparents’ table, or feel those creative juices flowing while pondering a new painting project.

Renee Floyd, owner and manager, was inspired to start the business almost eight years ago, and her hands-on approach means you’ll find her in the shop daily, along with dedicated team members Hannah Parsons and Jeff Hoxworth.

Brimming with home décor, antiques and collectibles, The Barn on Country Club is a relaxing escape for shoppers who are drawn to vintage quality and charm. For those who may be contemplating a re-do at home and hope to keep costs down, consider the appeal of repurposed furniture – pieces that will look like new while adding unmistakable charm!

From Modern Farmhouse and Boho to Coastal or Traditional, Mid-Century Modern and Vintage, you’ll find something here for every style and budget, and the inventory at The Barn on Country Club is constantly changing.

“If you like it, buy it when you first see it!” said Renee. “We promise to help you find the right place for it in your home.”

While she loves every aspect of the business, Renee’s favorite moments are when a customer’s face lights up after finding the perfect piece for a certain space. She’s always eager to lend creative advice – inspired by her love for interior design and especially for repurposing furniture – and she knows the details of every item on the floor. Between estate sales, auctions and customers ready to downsize, there’s always something new to see. You can be sure Renee has carefully chosen every piece in the store and can likely share a little of its history. You may find a vintage piece that becomes your own new treasure to pass down one day or a statement piece from one of the charming vignettes. Weaving something that’s been well loved into your own décor story can make for an interesting aesthetic – and certainly provide a lively conversation piece!

Always eager to guide you, Renee offers some expert tips for choosing a piece of vintage furniture for your home:

• Remember to measure your space before you shop. That saves time, energy and disappointment!

• Establish the look and feel you envision for your space. Do you see a vintage piece working in your home?

• Respect the history of the pieces you find here! Vintage furniture likely boasts a few flaws, but minor ones can be repaired. There’s always the option of painting a piece you can’t live without!

Adding a fresh new coat of paint to a favorite piece is actually a regular occurrence here. The Barn on Country Club is an authorized retailer for the popular Farmhouse Paint Company, and monthly painting classes are offered with paint instructor Dionne Jenkins. The store’s multi-level layout offers the perfect upstairs space for classes, girls’ day out or other group events. Painting classes are held once a month on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. – and you can BYOP – bring your own piece of furniture to paint.

If you’re intrigued by blending antiques with new items, furniture artist Mark Nyswonger is available at The Barn on Country Club to create custom pieces for your home including tables, bookcases, vanities or night stands. Stop by and browse photos of Mark’s beautiful work and see custom made examples showcased in different vignettes throughout the store.

It’s a promise you’ll find something that inspires you in this 8,500-square-feet of unique space! The Barn on Country Club is located at 4886 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC. How would you describe your work?

One of the things that separates me from other artists is I don’t have a certain style or medium with which I work. Over the years, I’ve never stuck with just one thing; instead I’ve produced all styles and worked with all mediums. All my work is customized for my clients, allowing me to produce whatever they request. It’s been a gift since I can remember to be able to paint, draw, create and bring about any creation my clients desire.

What influences your art most?

Honestly, my clients’ ideas and what they express wanting to bring to life for themselves, I bring to life. I am always inspired as I listen to their ideas and put my thoughts and experience into every piece of work. We end up with an original idea and an artistic design fully custom to them.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I have pushed myself to do more artwork for myself over the years. I choose anything that interests me. It’s been an incredible journey to put on canvas what I would like to see painted. Many of these pieces have sold quickly and boost my confidence to produce more in the future.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

We all know that time is something everyone has very little of and it never feels like enough. I go through all my creativity in my head, brainstorming ideas to execute. Even before I have started a project, it is always visually finished in my head, and I know exactly how it will look in the end which helps me get the most out of my time.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I am working on a mural of Old Salem at the moment. My clients, whom I have worked for multiple times, contacted me about this project in their home of Old Salem. They have exciting ideas to add to this mural to customize it to their personal life experiences. We are so excited about working on this together!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

Never give up. There will always be challenges in the art world. If it’s your passion, then understand there are ups and downs. I started my company 24 years ago with a borrowed ladder and a Tupperware lid for a palette. You can make anything happen in this world if you never give up.

Nighttime Glow: Unveiling the Connection Between Screen Time, Sleep Loss, Weight Gain and More

In an era where the digital world is an extension of our reality, it’s vital to understand the implications of our prolonged exposure to artificial blue light. While it lights up our smartphones and modern gadgets, illuminating our nights brighter than ever, this ubiquitous glow comes with a hidden price on our health. Let’s delve into the essence of blue light, its profound impact on our bodily processes and the measures we can adopt to shield ourselves from its invisible assault.

DEFINING BLUE LIGHT

When we speak of artificial blue light, we’re referring to a whitelooking light with a very high color temperature, casting a bluish tint as opposed to the yellowish hue of traditional incandescent lights. This artificial luminescence from our devices is significantly more intense than the natural blue light from the sun, permeating almost every aspect of our digital lives – from smartphones and LED lights to street lamps and modern TVs.

THE PSYCHO-SOCIAL ADDICTION

Our attraction to blue light isn’t merely a technological dependency; it’s a psychosocial addiction. This light has a stimulating effect on our hormones and nervous systems, intertwined with the digital content it conveys. The average individual checks their phone 150 times a day, a routine that incessantly activates our adrenal, pituitary and psychological reward systems, depleting essential hormones and causing a cascade of health issues ranging from adrenal dysfunction to fertility problems.

THE BIOLOGICAL COST OF BLUE LIGHT

• Stress Response Activation: Blue light stimulates our adrenal system, releasing cortisol and dopamine, priming us for daily activities but simultaneously heightening our stress levels, affecting our blood sugar, digestion and metabolism.

• Cognitive Impairment: Overexposure to blue light can deplete dopamine levels, leading to decreased concentration, creativity, motivation and an increased propensity for ADD.

• Sleep Disruption: Blue light has the potential to disrupt our natural melatonin production by up to 80%, significantly affecting both the quality and quantity of our sleep, as well as the various bodily functions that rely on melatonin. Among its key roles, melatonin serves as an antioxidant, possesses antiinflammatory properties, aids in blood pressure regulation, offers cardioprotective benefits, has antidepressant effects and acts as a neuroprotective agent.

• Hormonal Imbalance: Exposure to blue light can upset testosterone production and ovulatory cycles, leading to hormonal imbalances and potential infertility. Think about the impact this can have on kids and puberty.

• Appetite Misregulation: The impact of blue light on leptin, our body’s satiety hormone, can skew our sense of energy balance, potentially leading to overconsumption of food. Typically, leptin interacts with our brain when melatonin is present. But, if blue light suppresses melatonin, leptin’s ability to relay accurate information about our body’s energy, particularly fat reserves, is compromised, potentially triggering overeating.

MITIGATING THE BLUE LIGHT IMPACT

While eliminating all screen time post-sunset is impractical for most, there are effective ways to mitigate blue light exposure:

• Blue-Blocking Glasses: Wearing amber-colored glasses after sunset can significantly reduce blue light exposure from screens and LED lights. Swanwick’s blue-blocking glasses are available on Amazon and are a great option.

• Incandescent Bulbs: Opt for bulbs with lesser blue light for your evening lighting needs.

• Device Settings: Utilize night-mode on your smartphone post-sunset to reduce blue light emission. You will find that you are not as interested in scrolling social media because the light isn’t as vibrant which can be a win-win.

• Software Solutions: Install free applications like f.lux on your computer to minimize blue light exposure, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours.

In our quest to stay connected, we must not overlook the subtle yet significant impacts of blue light on our well-being. By understanding these effects and adopting simple protective measures, we can enjoy the benefits of our digital devices while safeguarding our health. As we navigate this illuminated world, let’s make informed choices, ensuring our light sources nourish rather than deplete our biological rhythms and health.

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Jess Mathews

Jess Mathews is the owner of The Cosmic Circle Vintage. She is a formidable presence in the realm of online sales of deadstock and vintage clothing. She recently answered some questions for us as a person of prominence right here in the Triad!

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF VINTAGE BEGIN?

When I was 17, my mom got me a sewing machine, and I started shopping with my own money. On a teen budget, I found that thrift stores were the best option for finding pieces that I could make work or alter to fit me. This is also when I started developing my own sense of personal style.

TALK ABOUT THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT WERE THE HIGH AND LOW POINTS DURING THIS CYCLE OF OWNING YOUR BUSINESS?

I collected a lot of great vintage pieces over the years. In 2012, a friend suggested that I open an online shop where I could make some money while getting rid of some pieces that were special to me. Never did I expect it to grow what it has grown into today; I’ve sold to multiple T.V. show sets and movies, and even a few celebs! I’m very grateful.

SPEAK TO WHAT DEADSTOCK CLOTHING IS AND HOW IT ENGAGES YOUR AUDIENCE/CUSTOMERS.

Vintage clothing that never sold and has never been worn, usually with the original tags is considered to be “deadstock.” These pieces are usually in great condition and 20+ years old. When out shopping it’s like “oooh!” finding a diamond in the rough.

WHY SHOULD WE BE MORE CONCERNED WITH SUSTAINABILITY IN ALL FORMS, AND HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS CONTRIBUTE?

It is a well known fact the clothing industry is one of the largest polluters of this planet, emitting thousands of harmful chemicals used in the textile mills around the world, which are dangerous to both the environment and the (usually underpaid) garment workers. Not to mention the waste. Sustainable fashion is a way in which everyone can contribute, whether that is trading, donating, shopping secondhand or recycling items into new ideas, it’s all helping eliminate unnecessary waste – even in small ways. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THIS BUSINESS MODEL?

The cycle of fashion is on a continuous loop with trends coming and going pretty quickly. I love seeing how the upcoming generations are incorporating true vintage pieces into their wardrobes while keeping it fresh and exciting – they keep me inspired, and I love meeting so many new faces.

IF YOU WERE PITCHING YOUR BUSINESS TO A GROUP THAT HAD NOT HEARD OF THE COSMIC CIRCLE, WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT TAKE-AWAY FOR YOU TO CONVEY?

There’s a certain magic in vintage pieces, sometimes you just have to get creative and find ways to bring them back to life. I hope The Cosmic Circle can inspire others to reclaim their own unloved pieces. Help eliminate waste. Rewear and repair..think of all the possibilities!

“One of the things that attracts me to vintage and antique things is they have stories, and even if I don’t know the stories, I make them up.”

~ Mary Kay Andrews

WHO ARE YOU NOMINATING FOR YOUR PERSON OF PROMINENCE, AND WHY?

I would like to nominate my friend, Quala Tyree. She is a certified personal trainer along with being a dance fitness instructor. I’ve taken many of her classes, and they are always so much fun and very inspiring for women of all ages. I think more people should know about what she is offering and the energy she is putting out there!

Best Places to Walk in Clemmons and Winston-Salem

One of my favorite activities to do outside of school is to go for a walk, especially with my dog. I love spending time in the sunshine while getting fresh air. I have always found walking beneficial to my mental health as I have time to think, reflect and relax while walking. Going for a walk is the one time during my day when I can take a break from working and simply have my mind be at ease. Walking is a wonderful way to get moving and exercise without putting too much strain on your body. I have found that doing a mix of more high-intensity workouts with walking has been a good balance for me. Over time, I have discovered my favorite places to walk in Clemmons and Winston-Salem which I share below.

PLACES TO WALK IN CLEMMONS

• Tanglewood Park (4061 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012): I love walking at Tanglewood Park because of the variety and length of trails that this park offers. You can walk on the paved trails or walk on trails in the woods. There is also a gravel track that you can walk around that is located beside the dog park. There are plenty of dog bag stations around the park, and you will often see many horses and deer walking around. Tanglewood even has a beautiful arboretum that you can walk through in addition to a manor house, train, barn and lake within the park.

• Village Point Greenway (6610 Village Point Lake Drive, Clemmons, NC 27012): Village Point Greenway is another great place to walk in Clemmons. The paved trail goes around Village Point Lake, so the scenery is relaxing. It is easy to do a few circles of the trail as it loops around the lake. Also, the paved trail is flat which I always appreciate!

PLACES TO WALK IN WINSTON-SALEM

• Reynolda Village/Graylyn Estate (2201 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106): This is one of my favorite places to walk in Winston-Salem. The paved trails at Reynolda Village are so nice, and the scenery is beautiful. Some trails are in more wooded areas that go off the main trail. You can easily walk over to Wake Forest and spend time walking on campus. Also, it is easy to cross the road over to Graylyn Estate where there is plenty of space to walk. Additionally, there are restaurants, coffee shops and shops located in Reynolda Village to enjoy after your walk.

• Hanes Park (1404 W Northwest Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27104): Hanes Park is located around the West End area of Winston-Salem. There is a large track that you can walk on at this park, and there are sidewalks all around the park, too. Also, many surrounding neighborhoods have sidewalks that you can easily walk to from the park.

• Muddy Creek Greenway (285 Meadowlark Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106): The Muddy Creek Greenway is another convenient place to walk as there is plenty of paved trail space available. The trail size is spacious which makes this greenway an ideal place to walk your dog.

All of the places listed above are great areas to spend time walking around. Two of my favorite places to walk are Tanglewood Park in Clemmons and Reynolda Village in Winston-Salem. Having the option of walking on either a paved trail or a trail in the woods is something that I enjoy, especially when I want to run a little bit during my walk. If you are reading this article, I would encourage you to spend time walking outside at any one of these amazing trails while enjoying being in the sunshine.

With the convenience of online shopping overtaking Americans’ shopping habits and wallets, local business owners often reap the consequences of mass consumerism. Before checking Amazon or “fast fashion” websites for the media, art or clothing items you need, shop secondhand around the Triad to keep the environment healthy and local businesses happy. Below are just a few of the fabulous thrift and consignment joints in the area that offer unique, pre-owned products with storefronts just as charming.

THE ECLECTIBLE SHOP

A far cry from a typical day of thrift shopping, The Eclectible Shop in Winston-Salem, owned by Frank Frye, is the mecca of books and vintage vinyl. Staying true to its pun-inspired name, the eclectic storefront packs its 3,000 square feet with thousands of used books of all genres, iconic vintage vinyl records, art and antique collectibles. Due to Frank’s vast selection of treasures, shoppers can spend hours along the store’s shelves and will likely leave with a book or two that they wouldn’t be able to find online. After taking a five-year break, Eclectible reopened in 2013 and has since been back and better than ever with a new supply of book titles that are rare finds for literature lovers throughout the Triad. Customers rave about Frank’s expertise in literature and passion for his craft as he is always willing to help customers find whatever suits their fancy. Both floors of the retail space are fully lined with goods, making the challenge of finding needles in haystacks appealing to many thriftlovers. Stop by the shop on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at 1036 W. Northwest Boulevard, WinstonSalem. Find The Eclectible Shop on Facebook and stay up-to-date on the store’s latest finds by following @eclectibleshop on Instagram. Call the store with any questions at 336.722.8655.

THE LANE EXCHANGE

Contrary to stationary thrift stores, The Lane Exchange thrift bus gives fashionable shoppers something new to write home about. The brain child of Owner Brit Amerson, The Lane Exchange travels around in a decorative, full-size school bus to post up at pop-up locations and various events throughout the Triad. Featured on WXII in February 2023, The Lane Exchange promotes upcycling and purchasing pre-owned clothing items and accessories rather than supporting the mass production of goods and overconsumption. Offering delivery, in-store shopping and in-store pickup, items for sale on the thrift bus are also listed on Poshmark, Depop and eBay. In April, The Lane Exchange hosted its Earth Day Thrift Crawl by parking at Downtown Winston-Salem locations such as Wiseman Brewing, Collage, Still Grimey, Happy Hour and Off the Rack. Secondhand shopping is not only more cost effective but helps preserve the environment and reduce waste, as well. Not only does thrifting support other local business owners such as Brit, but it also allows browsers to add a story behind pieces in their wardrobe. There is something so satisfying about bringing home a gently used rare find – especially from a mobile thrift store. Keep tabs on where to find the thrift bus next by following The Lane Exchange on Facebook or checking @thelaneexchange on Instagram. Links to The Lane Exchange’s Depop, Poshmark and eBay items can also be found on Instagram.

GOLDMAN CENTER Caring for Your Most Beautiful Face

for Facial Plastic Surgery

If you’re not feeling joy each time you look at your reflection in the mirror, it may be time to schedule a consultation with the ultimate self care professional!

Dr. Neal Goldman of the Goldman Center for Facial Plastic Surgery is proud to have cared for aging faces in the Winston-Salem area since 1999 – and an ever-growing number of happy, confident smiles can confirm his expertise!

Building during the pandemic and still with a steady rise in popularity, face and neck lifts are the most requested procedures at Dr. Goldman’s practices in both Clemmons and Boone, and now also in Greensboro.

“Our practice is 100% specialized and limited to cosmetic, aesthetic and reconstructive facial surgery,” he shares. The skilled staff uses computer imaging to project a patient’s face and neck from all possible angles and then joins in a heart-to-heart discussion of any potential for improvement as well as limitations for these treatments. Patients are always made to feel at ease – knowing honestly what to expect after their procedures.

Even though “loose” skin is a natural part of aging, a portion of that initial consultation and discussion might include the presence of other contributing factors including genetics, sun exposure, diet and daily stresses which can hasten the aging process. A face lift is designed to remove excess skin and fat while repositioning the skin, muscle and deeper tissues.

Many patients inquire about fillers which are temporary treatments that can work for early signs of facial aging – when the soft tissue and

skin of the lower face begins to descend as we age and may be one of the first issues we notice in the mirror! However, the most reliable method for long lasting results is a lower face lift with an experienced, board certified surgeon. Dr. Goldman says that “the best neck lift is a face lift!” Dr. Goldman shares that most of his face lift patients are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, but many people begin to examine their necks while still in their 40s.

“It’s not about the patient’s age but more about his or her overall health and outlook on life that makes for a good candidate,” he adds. People come to see us when threads, Botox and fillers are no longer enough.

Always encouraging patients to do what’s best for their present situation, the Goldman team can provide a quicker recovery period with more subtle results with a mini-lift that addresses the skin, but not the muscle layers. Or, they can perform a more modern “deep plane” or traditional SMAS face lift which may mean a longer recovery but will give the incredible long lasting results that women – and an increasing number of men – are seeking.

Amazing options await you at The Goldman Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, conveniently located at 6318 Jessie Lane, Clemmons, NC, 336.245.9595 with Dr. Goldman’s mountain satellite office serving patients at 717 Greenway Road, Boone, NC, 828.278.9230. Self-Love for a Better You

Instead of investing time, money and energy into trying to look perfect or trying to be more beautiful, get wise with cultivating a more positive and healthier perspective and real-ationship with yourself. It takes patience and is a growth process, but focus on learning by accepting and appreciating who you are inside and out, uniquely and individually.

However long we are here, it’s essential to let go of any negative or limiting beliefs that have been holding us back from living our best lives. Empower yourself. Commit to embrace yourself as you are with no “buts” or “excepts.”

According to the core concept of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), it may behoove us to rewrite our narratives as we chart our journey and create wellness, health and healing. Reframe your metaphoric life script for a direct impact on your happiness. Sometimes we need a “refresh,” just like our internet browser needs refreshing from time to time – and keep in mind it may take some time for things to reload again.

Free yourself by letting go of negative or limiting beliefs and focus on feeling better about yourself. Don’t try to be perfect, but be content with who you are and where you’re currently at in life, no matter where you may have been in the past. Practice self-love and self-care, create healthy habits for improved physical, emotional and spiritual health, and set realistic goals to build a healthier and happier life.

LET GO OF THE NEGATIVE & REPLACE WITH POSITIVE SELF-TALK

Negative self-talk can be extremely detrimental to our self-esteem and overall well-being. Instead of focusing on our flaws, shift your attention to strengths and achievements. Try baby steps and substitute all that negative talk with positive affirmations. Replace selfcriticism with self-compassion. There’s always another side to the coin, and you can flip it around to your benefit and advantage. Remember always that you are beautiful, unique and worthy of love and acceptance just the way you are.

CULTIVATE A MINDFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD & BEVERAGES

A healthy relationship with food and beverages is essential for your physical and mental well-being. Rather than follow restrictive diets and trending health fads, concentrate on nourishing your body and mind with wholesome, nutrient-rich and well-balanced meals. Try sustainable, smaller portions and include as much fresh produce as possible.

Focus on intuitive eating. Listen to your body’s true hunger and fullness signals so you can enjoy food without guilt or shame. As Hippocrates wisely said, let your food be your medicine. Food is not the enemy;

instead, it can be a key source of energy and pleasure, evoking happiness to be enjoyed and celebrated.

PRIORITIZE EXERCISE FOR JOY AND VITALITY

View exercise as an opportunity to boost your body and mind with cognitive health benefits, rather than as a form of punishment or act of drudgery. Find activities that bring joy and contribute to feeling vibrant and alive, such as dance and drumming. Focus on how movement makes you feel in your mind, body and spirit, not just on the physical outcomes. Embrace the endorphin and adrenaline boost that exercise provides, and remember that every movement counts!

IMMERSE YOURSELF WITH POSITIVITY

Surround yourself with uplifting, encouraging and inspiring individuals who positively influence your self-esteem and who are supportive of your well-being. Seek out like-minded individuals who promote a positive body image and empower you to be your best self. Engage in meaningful conversations and join communities that advocate for self-love, body positivity and mental well-being. Be part of a ripple effect network that inspires and uplifts one another in your community and beyond.

PRACTICE SELF-CARE AND BODY ACCEPTANCE

Self-care goes far beyond bubble baths and face masks. Self-care encompasses actions that promote overall well-being and support health and healing. Cultivate daily self-care routines such as reflective journaling, meditation, earthing, detoxing and spending quality time with loved ones, including pet therapy.

Accept and appreciate yourself at every stage of your journey. Celebrate your unique beauty, talents and skills, and remember that the journey towards self-love is ongoing and ever-evolving. Empower yourself and keep shining your light brightly from within.

Fresh Take for Upcoming Market

The market is always a whirlwind, and I like to bring back my interpretation to our readers and clients. This year’s designs, from every showroom, were geared toward balanced colors, mixed metals, gilded golds, performance fabrics and soft elegance. The High Point Market is all about what we might see in a year or two, but for us, it is refreshing. Honestly, the market is the inspiration for our thoughts and conceptualization of new projects. Inspiration and innovation are the keys to every designer’s creation. Having a multitude of both during the High Point and Atlanta markets, as well as being lucky enough to go, is so helpful to us. Two people seeing the same thing though may perceive them differently. It is how our creative minds discern what we see and what we absorb. We also peruse the furniture to see what is new in design, what is comfortable and what finishes are offered from each manufacturer. Rugs are always on our list to investigate, and we never forget lighting. Art is also important to complete any room. We love the local artists’ work that we have in our showroom, but we also look for what the art groups are bringing forth for us. We try to keep accessories and lighting as well as bedding options at our retail location to select from. Supply and demand have made it harder, but we collaborate diligently with vendors to buy unique goods for our clients. The colors most noticed are moody colors such as green, blue and shades of coral and rust.

Sherwin Williams’ Color of the year is Upward SW6239, and Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year is Blue Nova 825. Blue seems to hang around year after year. Styles range from mid-century modern to modern transitional. Modern has a twist to it this year from urban to mid-century to traditional. The term and the most recent terminology used are traditional modern. The good thing about us is we can turnkey the project starting with design, and we offer remodeling. We handle the entire project. As contractors and designers, we can do it all. Making it easier for you is our motto. We are ready to head to the market to get a Fresh Take on design.

So, whatever style you like, we can remodel or source furnishings for your home.

May God Bless!

3. Combine the water, ¼ cup sugar, salt and the butter in a small saucepan. Place over medium high heat, bring to a boil, then remove from heat.

4. Stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball.

5. Transfer the dough to a sturdy pastry bag with a medium star tip.

6. Using small cut-out pieces of parchment paper, pipe a large circle, then two connecting ovals to mimic a bunny’s face and ears. Pinch the “ears” into the circle to help them stick.

7. Place the parchment paper bunny into the frying oil, then carefully slide the parchment from underneath the churros to remove.

8. Fry until deeply golden brown on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to carefully remove and place on a paper towel-lined plate for 30 seconds. Once slightly cooled, dip one side into the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

9. To Make the Chocolate Sauce: Break up the chocolate into smaller pieces, then place in a medium bowl. Heat up the heavy cream until very hot, then pour over the chocolate.

10. Let stand for 8-10 minutes, then whisk until smooth. Enjoy with the warm churros!

Purpose Push:

Active Listening

Welcome to my unplanned two-part series. Last month, we talked about “Divine Communication” and how it’s important to communicate with love and respect. However, there’s a precursor for that method to be effective – active listening. Have you ever noticed the wisest person in the room is usually not the loudest? To gain wisdom, you must listen. Listening to God while caring for others will equip you to exhibit the right behavior, every time. James 1:19 instructs us to be, “Quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry.” Being a business owner shouldn’t be about making money first. Choosing entrepreneurship pushes you into personal development, so you can be a successful leader that money follows. As we all continue to grow, here are some things I’ve learned that have made active listening easier.

ADDRESS YOUR ISSUES

It’s hard to work with others when you are stressed or angry because personal issues can cloud your judgment and hinder your ability to listen effectively. It’s vital to do some inner work. Dealing with your issues is no one’s responsibility but yours and, as a leader, taking the time to address your own emotions and concerns allows you to approach conversations with your team and partners with a clear mind and open heart.

SEEK COMPREHENSION

There’s a difference between communication and comprehension. While someone may be expressing their thoughts and feelings, understanding them requires active effort. Some people aren’t great communicators, so when you have someone like this on your team or struggle with this yourself, it’s essential to ask God to bring understanding. James 1:5 assures us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Those who lack communication skills are still valuable, and seeking comprehension displays humility and a genuine desire to connect with others so everyone can grow.

IMPRISON YOUR IMPULSES

Active listening is a sign of love, and it requires patience and restraint. Instead of rushing to

Follow the mission on Instagram and Facebook: @perennialpeaces

solve the issue or respond immediately, take a moment to fully understand what is being communicated to you. Hold back your anger or impulses until you have gained clarity and a deeper understanding of the situation. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our heart because it is vulnerable, and everything we do flows from the condition of it. If you’re not careful, your heart can trick you (Jeremiah 17:9), so be firm on protecting yourself from yourself, and you’ll easily demonstrate respect for others and cultivate a trustworthy environment.

The scripture I’ll leave you with is Proverbs 18:13 because it wraps up everything we discussed today. Simply put, listen before you speak. Active listening is not just about hearing words but also comprehending what that means for the lives with which you’re intertwined. Using the methods of divine communication and active listening, you will create a culture of mutual respect in your business. As you embrace this, you’ll find that wisdom and insight abound, leading to stronger relationships and greater success in your entrepreneurial journey. Remember you are more than capable, and I have faith in you.

ROBERT HALL Embracing Your Unique Event

Amazing moments are taking place these days at Robert Hall in downtown Winston-Salem, and Owners Will and Christy Spencer love being part of some of the area’s most memorable lifetime celebrations.

Paying tribute to the past is only one of the many qualities that make Industry Hill’s immensely popular multi-purpose event space and Airbnb destination so special, as it showcases an eclectic ambiance that’s tailormade for a variety of event styles. If you can imagine it, the dedicated team of Event Manager Kris Walter, Sales Manager Mary Brunstetter, Teresa Miller, design and hospitality, and Bar Partners Matt and Jessica Judson of Thirsty Buffalo can make the magic happen. If you need a creative “nudge” let them know – that’s where this team really shines!

“Our bread and butter is definitely weddings, from rehearsal dinners and welcome parties to the actual wedding ceremony and reception, all on site,” explains Christy. “But, we host quite a variety of other events as well, from corporate retreats (complete with complete A/V capabilities), off-site meetings and holiday parties, to fundraisers for nonprofits, baby showers, sweet 16 celebrations and adult birthday parties, and yes, pretty much anything in between!”

Your entertaining options are as unique as your personality, and your event theme itself!

“The Vault is the perfect spot for seating up to 120 people for dinner or for cocktail parties of larger groups,” says Christy. “And, it can just as easily be transformed into a fantastic dance floor for enjoying your favorite band or DJ!”

This popular space is a glorious 2,500 square feet featuring concrete floors, an exposed wood beam ceiling and neon signs that add to its industrial vibe. It can also slip into a more elegant feel with a large reproduction Art Deco chandelier, velvet sofas and stunning floor-toceiling wall coverings.

MORGAN LONG PHOTOGRAPHY May 2024 | 49

On the second floor of Robert Hall, Capone’s is known for incredible brass entry doors that lead you to an impressive space graced by natural lighting. Yes, that’s an authentic 1920s mahogany bar – said to be from one of Al Capone’s hangouts and quite a conversation piece – and also a restored 1914 antique brass cash register. It’s a setting as distinctive as they come and a sophisticated spot for a cocktail hour with space for up to 100 guests or a more intimate seated dinner for up to 60 people.

The Garden space at Robert Hall is a uniquely flexible 3,000-square-foot space with comfortable room for more than 100 people. Christy adds the garden has been used for wedding ceremonies, elegant alfresco dining and outdoor concerts. “We’ve also had groups tent the patio to add additional dinner seating, as well as create an outdoor dance floor under the stars!” What could be better?

The Robert Hall experience also includes The Huntley House, a five-bedroom Airbnb property with rooms that can be rented together or individually.

“It’s designed to feel like a boutique European hotel with each room designed en suite,” shares Christy. “I decorated the space in honor and memory of my dear mother-in-law, Ann Lanier Spencer, so it has a great Winston-Salem historical vibe that makes it incredibly unique. We also added a connecting door from The Huntley House to Capone’s, so it can be utilized for bridal parties and guests.” Will’s family has been part of this community for several generations, and Robert Hall’s nod to rich history is heartfelt!

The ultimate downtown location, hosting your event at Robert Hall also offers a fun mix of breweries, restaurants, galleries and museums all nearby, so out-of-town guests have several options for their free time.

To reflect the concept of the entire Robert Hall destination, Christy and Will created the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society (in collaboration with Lisa McMullen of Project Short Street) as a way to honor the essence of the supper clubs of the past –where dinner and entertainment were an “experience” – and one that was remembered fondly. Anyone with a love of food, fun, adventure and an appreciation of unique entertainment can purchase a membership at roberthallsecretsuppersociety.com.

“This year, we are hosting five events throughout the year,” Christy adds. “The first one in March was themed ‘Pride and Prejudinner’ where guests were treated to a four-course meal prepared by Cuisine Kathleen and entertained by a comical musical adaptation of the Jane Austen novel by Tara Raczenski. Costumes and actors were provided by The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem, and guests were highly encouraged to dress the part. A good time was had by all!”

The second event “Bourbon Curious” is scheduled for May 2nd, including a collaboration with Broadbranch Distillery for a bourbon tasting. Rooster’s – A Noble Restaurant will provide delicious appetizers to coordinate with the bourbon varieties. As summer nears, look for release dates of the remaining three suppers included with membership. The Robert Hall team is also working on plans to re-envision the former museum property – located just around the corner – into an additional event space under the Robert Hall umbrella.

“We’re very excited about the prospects of this future project, which will offer our clients even more space to accommodate larger groups,” shares Christy.

“Robert Hall was the perfect venue to host our wedding, as we were looking for something non-traditional downtown. It was the perfect representation of Winston-Salem culture –blending the city’s rich industrial roots with polished artistic class. The event manager, Kris Walter, was the perfect host – giving consideration to each detail. Now, I just need a good excuse to host another event there!” ~ Jerica Yingling

Tax planning is a vital part of any wealth management strategy, but reducing your tax burden is not always a straightforward process, especially for individuals with more complicated returns. Careful planning can help minimize your tax liability leaving you with more money to further your financial goals.

Tax planning is not just something you think about when filing, it requires yearround attention if done properly. Surely, your accountant should play a large role in this, but consider working with a financial advisor who can recommend tax-efficient investment strategies as well.

WHAT IS TAX PLANNING?

Tax planning involves examining your finances holistically and incorporating strategies to reduce your overall tax bill through careful planning around income, purchases, investments and strategies like tax-loss harvesting.

How a Financial Advisor Can Help Lower Your Tax Bill Making Dollars, Making $ense

Strategic tax planning can also help maximize your estate and provide more flexibility for your heirs. For example, as part of your tax plan, you might hand off portions of your wealth to family members as tax-free gifts or establish an irrevocable trust to reduce the federal tax burden for those who inherit your estate.

HOW CAN A FINANCIAL ADVISOR HELP?

As part of an overall plan to manage your wealth, many financial advisors will offer tax planning services, which may include:

• Charitable Giving Strategies: The amount and timing of charitable giving can have an impact on your tax bill. A financial advisor can help you determine when and how much to give, so you can deduct your charitable contributions from your adjusted gross income. An advisor may help you time gifts to charity, so deductions can offset other big taxable events like a financial windfall, a salary raise or a large bonus at work.

• Tax-Loss Harvesting: An advisor can help you determine when to sell investments that have lost value to realize capital losses that can be used to offset taxable gains. Your advisor can help you use proceeds from the sale to reinvest in similar securities with upside potential.

• Choosing Tax-Efficient Investment Vehicles: A strategic tax plan will consider the impact of contributions to tax-deferred savings accounts like 401(k)s, 529 education plans and health savings accounts (HSAs). Some plans – like traditional 401(k)s, traditional IRAs and HSAs – provide an immediate benefit by allowing you to reduce your taxable income. Contributions to 529 plans are not tax deductible, but investments inside the account grow tax-free. Withdrawals made to cover qualified educationrelated expenses are tax-free as well. A financial advisor can help you plan

contributions to tax-deferred accounts to minimize what you owe in taxes.

• Multi-Year Tax Planning: The most effective tax plans go beyond annual strategies and look ahead to your long-term financial goals. An advisor can help you put together a multi-year plan to reduce your tax burden in the long run. For example, they could help you bank capital losses to offset a future taxable event such as the sale of an investment property.

Tax planning involves a lot of moving parts from annual adjustments to IRA contribution to charitable deductions to staying abreast of local tax laws. Working with a financial advisor on year-round tax planning can help ensure you are maximizing tax deductions, taking advantage of tax credits and using tax-efficient investment vehicles effectively. An advisor can help ensure you do not miss any opportunities to reduce your bill and will keep up with regulatory changes, making any necessary adjustments to your plan.

This information is not intended to be a substitute for specific individualized tax or legal advice. We suggest that you discuss your specific situation with a qualified tax or legal advisor.

How to Be More Social as an

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been more on the quiet, introverted side. I have always considered myself to be more of a “quiet leader.” I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, but I have a hard time always having the desire to participate in social activities. As I have gotten older, I have realized how important it is to be involved in social activities. I feel happier and more fulfilled in my life when I spend time with people. However, I understand how it can be hard to put yourself in social situations if you are an introverted person. As I have participated in more social activities recently, I have created a list of helpful tips which I share below on how to be more social even when it feels difficult to put yourself in those situations.

• SPEND TIME WITH FAMILIAR PEOPLE: I have found it helpful to attend social events with people that I know. For instance, if I know at least one person that will be at a social event, it helps me feel more comfortable. Sometimes I will even invite a friend with me to social events. By knowing at least one person, I do not feel as anxious. I know it is not always possible to invite a friend to come with you to events, but if you can, then I would greatly encourage you to do that. If someone you know invites you to an event, I would recommend going because knowing one person will help you feel more at ease.

• START WITH ONE EVENT AT A TIME: I have also found it easier to get involved in social events/ activities when I start slowly versus getting involved with multiple things at one time. By trying something new or putting yourself out there slowly, you will feel less overwhelmed. For example, in college, I have found it easier to join one club and see how it goes versus trying to

join multiple clubs at one time. Additionally, when I joined Washington Park CrossFit, I was able to slowly meet new people by attending a few classes during the week. By slowly getting involved in activities and putting myself out there to meet new people, I have gained confidence and a desire to continue getting involved in more activities. By giving myself time to adjust to new social settings, I have felt less anxious and more excited to try new opportunities.

• HAVE A BALANCE: I believe it is important to have a balance between being social and having time to yourself as an introvert. While I do love spending time with people and being social, I also value my time being by myself where I will read, journal, listen to music or watch a movie. By having time to myself, I feel more energized, and I look forward to spending time with people. I feel that if you try to attend too many social events then there is a chance of feeling burnt out. On the other hand, if you try to avoid social events, there is a chance of feeling lonely. Therefore, having a balance between being social and being by yourself can help you to feel more well-rested and connected to people in your life.

I hope that this article will encourage people who may feel overwhelmed with getting involved in social activities. I have gained confidence and enjoyed getting involved in more activities by spending time with people that I know, getting involved slowly and maintaining a good balance between going out and being at home.

SMOKED PORK BELLY

This recipe is one that was all over the internet not too long ago, and I was late to the game on trying out. It turned out to be amazing and is probably my favorite meat I’ve ever smoked!

Instead of cubing up a pork belly slab like you typically would for some pork belly burnt ends, we just cut it into two even slices – to speed up the process and let it cook more evenly. Just like you would for a brisket, we cooked it all the way to an internal temperature of around 197-203°. You can find these pork belly slabs at Food Lion in their smoking meat cooler – and for around $20-27, they are awesome!

Ingredients:

• 1 pork belly slab

• Meat Church Holy Cow BBQ seasoning (or your favorite BBQ rub, a simple salt pepper garlic works, as well)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the smoker to 250°.

2. Slice pork belly slab in half – or four sections if you have a larger piece. I typically get the Swift pork belly from Food Lion which is perfect to just slice in half.

3. Trim any uneven edges or ridges that are too tall or thin to make for an even cook.

4. Season all over with BBQ seasoning –let the seasoning stick to the meat for 15 minutes or so before throwing it in the smoker.

5. Place on the preheated smoker and let it go for an hour or two, then you’ll want to spritz it a couple of times with some ACV/water mixture.

6. Keep it on the smoker, checking periodically until it feels incredibly tender and a temperature probe slides in like warm butter. This usually happens around 195-200° internal, but you can bring this cut up to even 205-210°.

7. Once you reach that desired tenderness/temperature, pull it off the smoker and let it rest/cool down. I do this by wrapping it in butcher paper and then wrapping a towel around and placing it in a cooler.

8. You can let something like this rest for an hour or so while you get the rest of your food ready. After resting, I slice it up into thin long slices that look like brisket, then place on a charred tortilla with some taco toppings!

Free Birdhouses By Fred

Looking Out for Our Fine Feathered Friends

Each year, more than 45 million Americans take part in birdwatching, spending approximately $41 billion on birdwatching-related trips and equipment to help feed and house birds in their own backyards. Spending time outdoors with our fine feathered friends increased during the pandemic with many staying home and having more time to interact with nature. Fred Willett, of Clemmons, Navy veteran and retired WSFC teacher, has combined an interest in building with birds and has made more than 500 birdhouses and given each of them away.

HGTV-INSPIRED PROJECT GREW AND GREW

Although Fred and his wife, Flo, love watching the birds in their own yard, going from that to building birdhouses for others’ yards may seem to be a stretch, and you’d be surprised what inspired Fred to start his hobby.

“A couple years ago, I was watching the series Home Town on HGTV, and I became fascinated with Ben Napier’s, one of the stars of the show, building skills, to the point that I wanted to try my own hand at building. I built a few rough birdhouses and gave them away; bought a few hand tools and improved on my skills. I asked around to find takers for my birdhouses, but soon ran out of people to ask. I then found the website ‘Next Door’ and wrote a blurb about my wife and myself, offering to give away free birdhouses to anyone who asked. Now, this undertaking has become my ‘birdhouse ministry.’ I love giving away birdhouses, meeting and talking to so many new people and sharing the gospel through a book I include with each birdhouse entitled, ‘The Life and Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth,’” said Fred. Most recipients follow up with “thank you” notes and many thank Fred with a good hug, which is always appreciated.

A SMALL WORKSHOP AND A BIG HEART GO A LONG WAY

Fred began his birdhouse project with varying styles, but now focuses on bluebird houses because they are popular and easier to make.

“I have a small workshop in my basement with the necessary tools; I get my wood from wherever I can find it. Folks have been kind to donate wood, and I hit the scrap piles as well. I do not buy the wood because it is so expensive. The birdhouses are free and, so far, I have given away 508 of them. Sometimes folks want to pay me for my time and materials, and I let them know that any money I receive goes to a church in Kenya that our Sunday School class has been helping to sponsor for several years. On occasion, I have to shut down my Next Door site because I have so many orders and need to go down into the basement and turn on some tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s country music, and start building,” Fred commented.

Fred and Flo deliver the birdhouses on Mondays, after the finish work with the Storehouse of Jesus in Mocksville. Fred doesn’t ship his birdhouses and only delivers them in person.

“My wife, Flo, and I love our birdies and, in our small backyard, we have seven houses, three feeders and three birdbaths. I tell people to be patient when they put up a birdhouse; the birds will find it. Flo and I enjoy sitting on the back deck watching the birds. God did well with birds for sure!” stated Fred.

If you would like to donate wood to Fred, please contact him at fwillett@triad.rr.com since there are certain types and sizes of wood that can be used. You can also contact Fred to request a birdhouse.

DISCOVERING A HIDDEN GEM IN NC WINE COUNTRY

Love wine? Just a short drive, 40 minutes west of Winston-Salem and one hour from the Lake Norman area, you arrive in the heart of North Carolina’s premier wine country. The Yadkin Valley AVA is home to more than 100 wineries, but there’s one destination that rises above and legitimately delivers a “Napa Valley feeling,” and that place is Dynamis Estate Wines.

THE DYNAMIS EXPERIENCE

Located on a sprawling 1,500-acre estate at more than 1,600 feet above sea level – the highest vineyards in Yadkin County – Dynamis Estate Wines is more than just a winery; it is a luxurious and sensory experience! From the moment you arrive at the gate, it is clear Dynamis is special. A 2.5-mile private drive takes you up the mountain and through the natural beauty of vineyard contours until you arrive, now completely “transported,” to the Tasting Lodge. The vibe here is intimate and luxurious. The vineyard views are dreamy. A wine ambassador greets you by name and you settle into a comfortable, informative and tranquil wine-tasting experience.

Dynamis has 30 acres of gorgeous vineyards planted with Bordeaux-style varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. It has been said that “grapes like a site with a view” and nothing proves this more than vines growing on a mountain ridge. “There is something magical about the impact that elevation has on grapes,” said Vineyard Manager

Joseph Geller. “We have a gentle breeze that cools and dries the vines, and daytime temps stay relatively cooler up here. All this helps preserve natural acidity and aromatic complexity in our grapes.”

WINEMAKING

Dynamis’ mission is to craft premium quality wines without making any compromises. Unlike some wineries in North Carolina, Dynamis makes 100% of their wines from the grapes they grow on the estate. The Dynamis winemakers Katy Kidd and Matheson Worrell employ a natural and minimalist approach in the winery, working with the fruit as it is received from the vineyard, rather than manipulating wine by adding sugar, tannins, aromas and other additions in the process. “Our wines are all about our property and express the unique terroir we have,” said Katy. “We really want people to come up here and experience that and see for themselves.”

BEYOND THE WINE

While Dynamis prides itself on its wine-centric approach, they understand the importance of elevating the entire wine-tasting experience through food and special events. Complementing each tasting event are locally sourced, seasonally inspired small plates, paired perfectly with your chosen wine.

Additionally, Dynamis expands their culinary offerings with special events like the Sunday Supper Series and the educational Food and Wine Pairings. While many events at Dynamis are exclusive to Wine Club Members, the monthly Sunday Supper Series is open to all guests.

As summer approaches, you can be on the lookout for Dynamisgrown peaches, pears, apples, honey and pecans. You can find charcuterie boards and other small plates that include these locally grown items. Additionally, you will be able to purchase them fresh or small plates using these delicacies in the tasting room as they become seasonally available.

WINE CLUB

Dynamis has a growing and coveted wine club that fosters a community of like-minded wine enthusiasts with intimate events and educational opportunities. “We want to bring our members behind the scenes and into the winery to share with them the science and art of our process,” said Matheson. By joining the wine club, you can gain premier access to their exquisite wines, a luxurious brand experience and access to exclusive events hosted throughout the year.

EVENTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO

SUNDAY SUPPERS SERIES

The Sunday Suppers Series is a monthly culinary experience with the goal of fostering community while gathering around the table with a chef-cooked meal and a glass of wine. You are kindly greeted with a welcome glass of wine and seated with other patrons for an unforgettable dining experience. Upcoming dates are May 26th and June 23rd.

Hustle & Heart

3 “Why Didn’t I Think of That?”

Cash Injector Ideas For Your Business

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

It’s no secret that entrepreneurship isn’t a linear journey. Not only are there ups and downs, there are loop-de-loops and sharp turns along the way, as well, especially on the financial end for most business owners. Whether due to a slow sales month or a large business expense coming in, I’ve absolutely experienced the need to bring money in quickly in my own small business.

The next time you find yourself praying to see those payment notifications come through your inbox and increase your cash flow, here are three ideas to inject cash into your business.

#1 CIRCLE BACK! RE-SELL TO EXISTING & PAST CUSTOMERS

It’s funny how much time and effort small business owners spend trying to gain new leads and book new clients when one of the most effective strategies to bring in sales is to revisit existing customers. The people who already know, like and trust you and your brand, make them more likely to make a purchase again. They’ve already experienced your magic!

Start by reviewing your customer database and identifying customers who haven’t worked with you in a while. Make it personal by reaching out to them in an email or on social media highlighting new products, promotions or exclusive offers you think would apply to them. This should absolutely feel genuine and specific to them, so don’t send something that feels cold and impersonal. Consider offering a “loyalty discount” or special “alumni client offer” as an incentive to purchase or book.

#2 SHIFT THE FOCUS! CREATE A SALES CAMPAIGN

If you want to entice existing followers, email subscribers and new leads to shop or hire this month, it’s the perfect time to roll out a targeted sales campaign! A strategic and well-executed sales campaign can generate a significant amount of revenue in a short period of time – just stay focused! First, you’ll want to choose an offer to concentrate on pushing out to your audience.

Start by identifying a specific product or service that has high profit margins and broad appeal to your target audience. You can create a specific promotion around it, such as a limited-time discount, bundle deal or exclusive package. Next, plan out how you can leverage your marketing efforts and who you want to see it. The goal is to encourage potential customers to take advantage of your offer and

really lean into the benefits, the urgency to buy while your promotion is going on and create high demand where you can.

#3 TEAM UP! LEAN INTO COMMUNITY & CONNECTIONS

No matter how much you invest in your business, the community will always have the greatest ROI (return on investment)! Take time to brainstorm some intentional relationships you already have established and consider inviting them to collaborate where it could be mutually beneficial. This could involve promoting your products or services on their social media, offering wholesale orders, designing a new one-time joint offer, becoming each other’s referrals or hosting a special event or pop-up shop to attract customers and generate interest.

Never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth marketing! Not only does teaming up help increase sales due to visibility but can also prove as a great marketing tool for creating connection and new interest that can convert into customers later on.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, use what you have to your advantage to inject cash into your business! Reviewing the above tips, choose at least one that you’ll lean into and create a specific task list around so you can start working towards your goals!

Always true to a client’s personality and lifestyle, Hillcrest Vision focuses on creating a customized plan for every vision need.

Providing comprehensive eye care and one of the largest selections of frames and lenses in Winston-Salem – and now in Mocksville –Juawana Hall, OD, founded Hillcrest Vision in 2009. For 15 years, she has delivered on her promise to provide the highest quality eye care experience to patients of all ages. A Davie County resident herself, Dr. Hall saw a void in eye care options in the area and wanted to bring the same level of care to Mocksville residents that patients have come to respect from the Winston-Salem location.

“Our patient philosophy is simple –to listen first,” explains Dr. Hall. “We need to understand how a patient uses their vision during each day in order to recommend customized optical solutions for them. In the same way, we need to listen to how a disease process is affecting a patient’s vision, so we can develop a treatment plan they can carry out. We value a high-tech approach, utilizing the newest innovations to best evaluate the eyes and give us a better picture of what’s going on. We do all this in a warm environment that makes people feel at ease.”

Both offices offer full-service care including exams, contact lens fittings, diabetic exams, advanced dry eye treatments, glaucoma treatment, emergency care and an expansive optical experience. Hillcrest is also proud

Caring for Your Eyes With a Personal Touch

to offer the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology – her own areas of clinical interest being dry eye, specialty contact lenses and corneal disease.

Caring for your entire family, Hillcrest Vision recommends a child’s first eye exam be between ages six to 12 months, and then again at age three, to ensure their focusing system is working properly. Before kindergarten at age five, they suggest an exam to make sure the child’s vision is perfect, with no concerns that would impede learning. At the opposite end of the age spectrum, it’s important to evaluate and manage conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration as we age, so an annual visit is recommended for all adults.

As part of their continued growth in WinstonSalem, Seth Jones, OD, and Mark Miriello, OD, have been added to the team. All three doctors will practice at both locations.

“Dr. Seth Jones joined the Winston-Salem practice in 2023,” shares Dr. Hall. “As a student, he rotated through our office and decided he would like to practice with us after graduation. Raised in Mocksville, he is a Davie High School graduate and went to Wake Forest for undergraduate work – so this area is definitely home for him!”

Dr. Jones’ areas of clinical interest are glaucoma, pediatrics and diabetic eye care, and he sees patients of all ages.

“No stranger to a small town himself, Dr. Mark Miriello was raised in Sanford, NC and practiced in rural North Carolina earlier in his career,” adds Dr. Hall. “He moved to Philadelphia to teach at the Pennsylvania

College of Optometry for four years but is excited to be back in North Carolina long term!”

Dr. Miriello’s areas of clinical interest are diabetic eye care, dry eye and glaucoma.

“We carefully select doctors and staff who understand the importance of our mission and commit to continuing the strong reputation we have as a patient-centered organization,” adds Dr. Hall. “We understand quality care takes time, and we want to make sure our patients have a firm understanding of their condition and how we’re treating them. We are often managing individuals with multiple issues, including systemic conditions that affect the eye, and we know it can be scary to consider the prospect of losing vision. We strive to educate, so patients have a better understanding of their situation.”

From appointment scheduling to check-in, throughout your exam and optical experience, you’ll always feel at home with Hillcrest Vision. You’ll likely learn that, as a mom of three, Dr Hall is always on the go, but she does enjoy crocheting, travel and a good book. Dr. Jones loves horses, the beach and he’s a selfproclaimed foodie, while Dr. Miriello enjoys traveling with his fiancé, trying new foods and –in his words – all manner of nerdy pastimes.

“We genuinely care for our patients like family,” Dr. Hall adds. “That’s the Hillcrest Way!”

Hillcrest Vision is conveniently located at 2341 Winterhaven Lane in Winston-Salem 336.760.2020, and now at 198B Hospital Street in Mocksville, 336.901.2020. Call the offices or visit HillcrestVision.com to request an appointment!

Learning to Lean Into Your Emotional Strengths and Weaknesses

Humans are complex individuals, filled with complex emotions. These emotions guide our thoughts, actions and interactions with others. Through our various interactions, humans discover their emotional strengths and weaknesses. Using our emotions positively and negatively shapes our experiences and relationships with our family, friends, coworkers, etc. Understanding these emotional traits often leads to a greater self-awareness and growth. In addition, a person is able to build stronger relationships with those around them. However, it can be hard to identify which emotions are your strengths and which emotions need improvement in order to effectively use them in your life.

Emotional strengths can be defined as qualities or attributes that help individuals to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, empathy and authenticity. These strengths vary from person to person but often are:

• Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of others.

• Resilience: The capacity to bounce back from setbacks and adversity.

• Optimism: A positive outlook on life, even in the face of difficulties.

• Self-awareness: Insight into one’s own thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

• Courage: The willingness to confront fears and take risks.

• Adaptability: Flexibility in adjusting to changing circumstances.

• Compassion: A genuine concern for the wellbeing of others.

• Assertiveness: The ability to express thoughts and feelings confidently and respectfully.

By recognizing and growing these emotional strengths, individuals can enhance their relationships, cope with stress more effectively and lead more fulfilling lives.

When it comes to emotional weaknesses, these are areas where individuals may struggle to regulate their emotions or cope with certain situations. These weaknesses can be:

• Impulsivity: Acting on emotions without considering the consequences.

• Perfectionism: Setting unrealistically high standards and being overly critical of oneself.

• Avoidance: Avoiding difficult emotions or situations rather than confronting them.

• Self-doubt: Persistent feelings of inadequacy or unworthiness.

• Rigidity: Difficulty adapting to change or considering alternative perspectives.

• Jealousy: Feeling threatened or insecure in relationships.

• Insecurity: A lack of confidence in oneself or one’s abilities.

• Over-sensitivity: Reacting strongly to minor criticisms or perceived slights.

While everyone experiences emotional weaknesses, acknowledging them is the first step toward personal growth and development and there are many ways to do that.

First, take time to self-reflect on your emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Journaling, meditation or therapy can help deepen your understanding of yourself and your emotional patterns and behaviors.

Seek feedback by asking trusted friends, family members or mentors for honest feedback about your emotional strengths and weaknesses. Their perspectives can offer valuable insights and help you identify areas for growth.

Next, cultivate mindfulness through practices such as meditation, deep breathing or yoga. Mindfulness can help you become more aware of your emotions in the present moment and develop greater emotional resilience.

Set realistic goals and develop healthy coping strategies. A good rule of thumb is to set achievable goals that align with your values and strengths. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable steps and celebrate your progress along the way. Be sure to take the time to exercise or spend time in nature to help manage stress and regulate your emotions effectively. Be kind and compassionate toward yourself, especially during times of difficulty or failure. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend facing similar challenges.

Also, build supportive relationships by surrounding yourself with supportive friends, family members or communities who uplift and encourage you.

Lastly, seek professional help, if needed. If you’re struggling to manage your emotions or find yourself overwhelmed by emotional weaknesses, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance, support and strategies for coping effectively.

Emotional strengths and weaknesses are key aspects of shaping our experiences and relationships. By embracing our emotional awareness, we gain a greater sense of selfawareness, resilience and fulfillment in life, all the while growing our relationships.

The Harvest of

In the beginning of last year, I believed things were looking up in my life. I was moving in with one of my best friends and had also been presented with a job opportunity that seemed too good to be true (spoiler alert – it was). Naturally, after a decade of being single, I assumed the love of my life was soon to follow.

Upon hastily accepting the job opportunity, I quickly found myself surrounded by not-so-upstanding characters who poked fun at my virtues and mistook my boundaries as a challenge. Although my intuition was telling me that I needed to leave as soon as the first day, I stifled God’s nudging and chose to persevere in hopes that things would improve with time. After weeks of being in a chaotic environment and tolerating constant inappropriate behavior, compounded with an embarrassingly short-lived and one-sided romance, I threw in the towel with my tail between my legs. At the end, I was left humiliated, heartbroken and defeated, and ultimately, asking God where I went wrong.

It’s not like I’m new to heartbreak. Year after year, I’ve become involved with men possessing vastly different values and habits than myself, convincing myself that they would change if I was “enough.” When things inevitably crashed and burned each time, I internalized every prospect’s lack of reciprocity or capacity for a healthy relationship as rejection and a reflection of me being “not enough” or “too much.” Repeated foolish and failed attempts at dating rotten fruit left deep wounds that affected how I viewed myself and showed up in the world. Even with frequent trips to the therapist’s office for months on end, nothing seemed to “click” until God stepped in.

Last year’s events brought about a severe depressive episode that served as my breaking point. I was forced to lean on God harder than ever, stop neglecting my mental health and receive help from those close to me. A long season of growth disguised as unbearable pain served its purpose in the form of life-changing lessons learned.

IMPORTANCE OF LAMENTING

Heartbreak

Christians are often done a disservice by the infrequent teachings of how to lament your heartache and frustrations to God. As it turns out, I discovered that I was a natural at lamenting before I even knew what I was doing. While delving into sermon after sermon trying to soothe my soul over the last year, I discovered that boldly crying out to God and asking “why” or “how long” questions is not a sin; in fact, it is one of the only things that seemed to be providing relief for me. However, the key to praying through lament is not simply complaining or venting your sadness. Lamenting carries an underlying, and sometimes outright spoken, message to God that, although you don’t understand how He’s working behind the scenes, you still trust that He hears you and has an ultimate plan for your pain.

DISCERNMENT IS (ALMOST) EVERYTHING

It was easy to blame myself for all of my failed attempts at dating. My brain seems to be hardwired to tell myself that my flaws or behaviors are always the primary reason for things never working out. It wasn’t until nearly 11 months into my newest season of heartbreak that I stumbled upon a sermon series on discernment by Jerry Flowers, Jr. that served as a turning point in how I viewed my past dating choices. I soon realized that I didn’t ruin anything that was ever meant for me. I had been accurately perceiving the red flags God was showing me each time I tried to date someone who I thought I could change. Unfortunately, things went awry as I made excuses for bad behavior and decided to proceed without caution. Reflecting upon my discernment and decisionmaking mistakes has allowed me to learn to listen to God speaking to me through the “unsettling” sensation I would feel upon observing red flags rather than ignoring the feeling and hoping that it would eventually dissolve. It’s also important to note that movies and fiction often send the message that people change for the right person, which is a message I had absorbed and come to believe until now. In reality, only God can truly change someone’s soul. Potential is not enough for a relationship, and expecting my values, behaviors and thought processes from other people has only been setting me up for disappointment.

PATIENCE IN GOD’S TIMING

Patience is my biggest shortcoming. I think, speak and typically act too quickly, which has clearly caused me strife. Not pausing for a consultation with God before accepting the job opportunity was another mistake I believe I made; however, my bigger mistake was allowing my own idea of my timeline to overshadow God’s timeline. Since turning 30, I put pressure on myself to find a husband sooner rather than later, which pushed me to overlook red flags and try to force love rather than trusting the process and choosing not to lower my standards. Although not being in control goes against every grain in my anxious and neurotic body, I now know that patience and trusting God’s timing is critical.

Sweet Everlasting...

Dreams Really Do Come True

In July 2018, amid the excitement and preparations surrounding the upcoming birth of their first child, Hannah Wilson (with support and encouragement from her husband, Chris) decided it was the right time to realize her dream to one day own a boutique-style event rental company. As Hannah shared, “If you have a dream, just take a leap of faith and see where it takes you.” So, young Hannah – recently graduated from college, newly married and anxiously anticipating the arrival of their little one, took the leap. With an impressive initial inventory of vintage furniture and accessories and the rental of a 200-square-foot storage unit in Winston-Salem, she began what would prove to be an unforgettable journey full of twists and turns.

“This dream has evolved into a passion project beyond anything I could imagine.”

~ Hannah Wilson, founder of Sweet Everlasting Rentals

In those early days, Hannah met clients at her tiny storage unit to select pieces from her growing inventory. She was literally bursting at the seams and knew that, in order to expand her business, she needed more space. Hannah had no way of knowing the hardships she would encounter, and she most certainly had no idea that a global pandemic was brewing just around the corner. But, during the height of COVID, when many independently owned businesses were shutting down, Hannah took a risk and formally acquired Eventful NC – another boutique-style event rental company – in January 2021 which allowed her to move into the space they were

leasing in the heart of downtown Greensboro. With a new space and plenty of room for expansion, Hannah continued to purchase beautiful and unique furniture, décor and props...increasing her treasure trove. From gorgeous vintage sofas and settees of every color to chairs, benches, mirrors, trunks, tables, lanterns and so much more, Hannah’s keen eye for curating items sure to add that “just right” touch to any occasion guaranteed her clients would find the perfect pieces to bring their visions to life. Investing in the business during a very uncertain, bleak time was a risk she was willing to take.

“It was one of the scariest things I have ever done –investing a lot of money with no way of knowing if the gamble would pay off.”

Hannah watched (and cringed) as many small business owners were forced to close during the pandemic and, while she knew that could be her reality as well, she pressed on, worked hard and, gratefully, was able to keep the doors of Sweet Everlasting Rentals open. In time, as individuals and corporations began to plan events once more, her client base really picked up and, by the summer of 2023, her business was booming! And then, just like that, Hannah found herself at a crossroads once again. She learned that her Greensboro landlord was selling her space and she (and all 2,400 square feet of inventory) would have to move. It was hard news to take, but Hannah chose to take another huge (scary) leap of faith and purchase her own building. She looked far and wide and eventually located the perfect space in Yadkinville – 3,300 square feet to house her current inventory with plenty of extra space for more treasure-hunting finds. As Hannah confessed, “This relatively short

entrepreneurial journey has been filled with many highs and lows, necessary risk taking and lots of faith, but I wouldn’t change any of it because it got me to where I am today.”

“It was really hard to get to this point, but worth it. I hope to inspire other young women who want to start their own business to go for it.”

Always forward thinking, Hannah rebranded her business last year with a new logo, new website and a fabulous new “wishlist” feature that has proven to be a game changer. Everything on the website is rentable, and each item is easily accessible by clicking on the category of interest. Hannah stated, “It’s simple! Clients pick out the items they’re interested in from the rental inventory by starting a wishlist. They submit the wishlist to me, and I’ll create a custom quote.” For individuals who want to come to the showroom and see the items in person (which Hannah highly recommends), the wishlist feature streamlines the selection process; providing Hannah valuable information for making suggestions to help bring their visions to life. For clients who are short on time or live far away (Hannah serves all of NC and will even venture to SC and VA), this “online shopping” feature works great!

“I take great pride in transforming something old or forgotten into a timeless treasure that lives on through beautiful events.”

Check out the incredible inventory by visiting Sweet Everlasting’s showroom located at 1849 Old Stage Road in Yadkinville (by appointment only), or online at sweeteverlastingrentals.com. To reach Hannah, email hello@sweeteverlastingrentals.com or call 336.422.6644.

Shallow Roots Run Deep in Davie County

Mocksville Historian Sheds Light on the Significance of the Yadkin River’s Shallow

Ford and Other Historical Figures

When Marcia Phillips and her husband relocated to Mocksville in 2013 to live on McClamrock family land, little did she know she would become a beloved community member and would help others develop a true sense of home and belonging. The historian, author and preservationist, who grew up on Granville Drive near Washington Park, oversees the Martin-Wall History Room at the Davie County Library. She assists locals, school children and transplants like myself in exploring the deep and rich history of Davie County. Marcia can also be found working at the Wake Forest University Library in Special Collections or serving on boards of The CARes Project or The Historic Nissen House in Lewisville.

As a newcomer to Mocksville, I first met Marcia at a book signing for the release of her book, “Historic Shallow Ford in Yadkin Valley – Crossroads Between East and West.” I had no idea that so close by was such a historically significant river crossing used first to settle the area and then again by revolutionaries and Civil War soldiers. The accounts of General Cornwallis pursuing General Greene right up through the heart of what is now Davie County piqued my interest in the Revolutionary War. I felt compelled to visit the Guilford Courthouse Military Park in Greensboro. There, I learned the significance of the battle that took place, as well by

(continued from page 72)

as how the soldiers pillaged farms and Old Salem for resources along their march.

After just a few months of living in Mocksville, I had already developed a slight infatuation with learning the history of Davie County. This interest was partly due to my daily driving by the Joppa Cemetery, next door to the Tractor Supply on Yadkin Valley Road, and observing the historical marker indicating the burial site of Squire and Sarah Boone, the parents of Daniel Boone. After meeting Marcia and sampling her persimmon pudding, a traditional local dessert, I was genuinely hooked on local history. I commenced reading the Shallow Ford book and completed it in just a few days, but I wanted to know more.

Marcia’s book, “Davie County Mavericks – Four Men Who Changed History,” further sprouted my interest in exploring our state’s history, Daniel Boone, the early settlers and connections to WWII. It is interesting to note that near my home is a road named Pudding Ridge, supposedly after Cornwallis, who mentioned the consistency of the mud here in Davie. Another road, even closer to my home, is named Ferebee Lane after a local boy, Thomas Ferebee, who grew up to become the bombardier who dropped the atomic bomb, ending WWII. His story is told in “Mavericks,” along with Boone, Peter Stuart Ney and Hinton Helper, the author of “The Impending Crisis,” known for his outspoken anti-slavery beliefs.

After reading Marcia’s books, I dropped by the library for small talk. Marcia entertained my questions and escorted me across the history room to a map. This map, on display in the library, is of the land grants from the 1700s with an overlay of today’s roads and towns. I was amazed and in awe. I could see who owned the land where my home now stands! This map created a deep connection to the past I had not expected to find. I immediately purchased and framed a copy, and the map now hangs in my home. It is quite a conversation piece for guests.

Although I did not find my way to Mocksville by crossing the Shallow Ford like many other settlers to North Carolina (historically speaking, I’m more of a “halfback”) Marcia piqued my interest in learning about my new community and helped me to feel connected. I’ve since branched out to visit

Bethabara, Old Salem and Bethania. They say the best teachers are the ones who inspire students and create independent learners. Marcia did just that, and now my shallow roots are growing deep in Davie.

Marcia’s books are available for purchase on her website –marciadphillips.com.

On the Road Again

EUROPE’S BEST DAY TRIPS

Want to make the most of your short trip to Europe? Thanks to the efficiency of Europe’s trains, buses and ease of crossing country borders, tourists can never run out of destinations to explore. Pack your itinerary with three of the best day trips from major European cities to get the most bang for your buck.

2. SIENA FROM FLORENCE, ITALY

1. ČESKÝ KRUMLOV FROM PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Prague alone is considered to be one of the most stunning cities in the world due to its enchanting architecture and rich history. Frequented by tourists year-round, few tourists ever feel the need to venture out of the city center to see more of what the Czech Republic has to offer. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Český Krumlov is a 2.5 hour bus, train or car ride from Prague, nestled in the South Bohemian region of the country. With its historic city center seeming like a site straight out of a fairytale, the Vltava River runs through the town with a looming 13th century castle drawing in millions of tourists each year. During the summer months, water sports along the river are popular, but the town is just as charming in the colder seasons. If you take a visit, you may even decide to spend the night, as the town is packed with restaurants and offers plenty of accommodations as well.

Often considered rivals, Siena and Florence are two of Tuscany’s gems. Art lovers flock to Florence, while travelers interested in Tuscany’s hill towns can find a great base in Siena. Unlike Florence’s renaissance appeal, Siena’s architecture is much more medieval and gothic. The Piazza del Campo is one of Siena’s highlights as the main square with a rich history in horse racing. Sip Tuscan chianti wine at an outdoor café, chow down on pappardelle pasta with wild boar ragu or take a guided tour to nearby local wineries and vineyards. Depending on the route and speed, Siena can be reached via train in one to two hours. Of course, those exploring Italy by car can reach the town in closer to an hour – just be sure to have a designated driver if you plan on tasting wines. Although Florence is considerably larger and houses much more shopping, nightlife and restaurants, Siena is a breath of fresh air for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of one of Italy’s most visited cities.

3. BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA FROM VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Travelers looking to check off as many countries as possible on their bucket lists can take advantage of Vienna’s close proximity to the country of Slovakia with a quick train ride to Bratislava (typically less than an hour long). Famous for classical music from composers such as Mozart and Beethoven, Vienna is Austria’s largest city with baroque architecture and plenty of sights to see. Its price range is a bit more on par with Switzerland rather than cheaper countries in Central or Eastern Europe; however, prices in Bratislava are considerably lower, giving your wallet a bit of a break for the day. As the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava is home to the Bratislava Castle on a hilltop overlooking the Danube River. Try Slovakian delights such as cabbage soup, hearty dumplings and dishes with plenty of potatoes. Slovakia also shares bragging rights alongside the Czech Republic for the creation of slivovitz which is a plum brandy that comes in a variety of fruity flavors often referred to as palinka.

OUT AND ABOUT

Winston-Salem nonprofit LEAD Girls hosted its annual Soiree event earlier this spring to recognize the exceptional young ladies who participate in its school – and community-based programs.

Taurasi Canty, a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) fifth grader was named the 2024 Aspiring LEAD Girl of the Year. Taurasi was recognized as an ambitious advocate who puts forth her best effort to ensure she, her classmates and her community are thriving. Her mother, Danielle, said this about Taurasi, “She has been eagerly waiting to become a LEAD Girl since 3rd grade. This year, she was finally able to do that. I am excited, proud and grateful to receive this announcement of her honor.”

Dominique Smith, a WS/FCS eighth grader, received the STEAM LEAD Girl of the Year award. Dominique participates in LEAD’s new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math program. An aspiring doctor, she wants to continue leading to help others.

Aleyan Hayes, a WS/FCS eighth grader, earned the Community LEAD Girl of the Year award. She was recognized as a charismatic leader who is adaptable, collaborative and persevering.

Leilany Aguiar Mendez, a WS/FCS seventh grader, received the LEAD Girl of the Year award. Leilany was recognized as dedicated, diligent, compassionate and a strong critical thinker.

Myla Dent, a WS/FCS ninth grader, received the LEAD Girls Trailblazer of the Year award which goes to one of LEAD’s high school ambassadors who started with the program in middle school and has continued to be a role model and mentor to younger students.

The LEAD Soiree is also a major fundraiser for the organization. This year, LEAD exceeded its goal and raised more than $50,000. The Soiree concluded with attendees receiving a copy of LEAD’s new “She-Festo” (a play on the word “manifesto”) developed as part of a pro bono collaboration with local creative agency The Variable. “Our SheFesto is a powerful statement about the role and importance of LEAD in our community,” said LEAD Founder and Executive Director Joy Thomas. “I especially love the reference to our girls as flowers that grow through concrete. That her life is our life’s work as we help her be seen, be heard and be powerful.”

The Art of Swedish Death Cleaning:

Changingyour environment has the power to change your life. Conversely, NOT changing it has the power to literally keep you captive and immobilized; particularly when you live in a cluttered space that can feel so overwhelming you have the things you own owning you. As a self-proclaimed hoarder (which I argue is a genuine disability), my house is a study in disorganization. There is so MUCH that it is often difficult just to find a path to other rooms in my abode. But, more importantly, it was not all the stuff that I owned that was crippling me but the unhealthy psychological attachment I have had to it. The stuff seems to have its own intrinsic life and meaning which holds me in a prison that finally began to feel impermeable. There is my adult son’s beanie baby collection, college notebooks from the University of California Berkeley full of lectures from 20 years ago, clothing from the 90s which is clearly outdated, the Starbucks coffee mugs, 60 all told, sitting on a shelf, not used and broadcasting images of cool chic if only someone might notice. Like Popeye, I finally rose up and said “I’ve had all I can take, and I can’t takes no more.”

As the Song in “Frozen” Says, Let It Go, Let It Go

The game changer for me was a book I just happened to pick up one day in the library entitled “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How To Free Yourself and Your Family From A Lifetime of Clutter.” The unconventional title caught my eye, and I sat down at a desk and read at least half of it in one sitting. The author, Margareta Magnusson, developed the idea of Swedish Death Cleaning (or, dostadning, as it is called in her native language) which essentially argues for eliminating unnecessary items from your home so that loved ones won’t be burdened with the task after you are gone. The idea, according to her, is that once you reach the end of middle age, you should get rid of all the stuff you have accumulated which you don’t need anymore – so that no one else has to do it for you after you die. She says that you should begin the process if you’re 65 or older (although younger folks can do it as well). Since it is admittedly laborious from a physical, emotional and cognitive viewpoint, the reality is to do it sooner rather than later when you still have sufficient energy to undertake the work.

Swedish Death Cleaning is deep – on one level it essentially helps you prepare for death and facing one’s morbidity. But, it is not simply about dusting or mopping up –rather it is a permanent form of organization that makes your everyday life run more smoothly. Admittedly you might feel some pain in letting go of things that once gave you pleasure (goodbye high school love letters), but it can also be a surprising delight to go through things and reminisce about

their meaning and worth. As enthusiastic followers of SDC will tell you, it fits nicely into the concept of the minimalism movement whose premise is that if you pare down, you can better focus on the really important things in life – happiness doesn’t come from stuff but rather from relationships and experiences. Social influencer Marie Kondo famously asked people to part with anything that didn’t spark joy when we touched it. How true. One of the benefits of SDS is that living with less mess and clutter makes us live with a “lighter footprint.” As Magnusson says “life will become more pleasant and comfortable if we get rid of some of the abundance. Mess is an unnecessary source of irritation.”

Getting rid of the clutter might make you happier, less stressed and ultimately more productive. A secondary benefit is doing a favor for those who survive you who won’t have to figure out what to do with all of your belongings. Ultimately, we have to face down that inevitable talk about death and SDC may be a presumptive good way to start that conversation. One can start by gifting friends and family your objects, donating or selling them. “Begin where you are” as the old saw says – go ahead and clean up your home like there is no tomorrow. In the past few months, I have been doing just that and feel a powerful sense of lighter being and personal peace. SDC works. I think about the wisdom of a statement that Mother Teresa made and fully agree with it: “The more you have, the more you are occupied. The less you have, the more free you are.”

Spring into Spring with Your Fruitalicious Fix

Are you ready to welcome the vibrant colors and flavors of spring? As the weather warms up and the flowers start to bloom, it’s the perfect time to indulge in the season’s freshest fruits. From juicy berries to tangy citrus, spring offers delicious and nutritious options for a fruitalicious fix.

Not only are spring fruits bursting with flavor, but they are also packed with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These nutrients play a crucial role in boosting our immune system, improving digestion and promoting overall health. So, why not make the most of this season and incorporate these delicious fruits into your diet?

First up, we have strawberries, the quintessential spring fruit. These ruby red gems are not only sweet and juicy but are also a great source of vitamin C and manganese. Add them to your morning oatmeal, blend them into a smoothie or top them over a bowl of yogurt for a refreshing and energizing start to your day.

Next on the list is vibrant and tangy citrus fruit, such as oranges, lemons and grapefruits. These fruits are rich in vitamin C and are known for their immune-boosting properties. Squeeze some lemon juice over your salad, make a batch of fresh orange juice or use grapefruit slices to add a zesty twist to your chicken or fish dishes.

Another delicious spring fruit is the apricot, which is a good source of vitamin A, potassium and fiber. These juicy fruits are perfect for snacking, but they can also be used in savory dishes. Add them to a salad with some goat cheese and balsamic dressing for a burst of sweet and tangy flavors.

Last, but not least, we have the versatile and flavorful mango. This tropical fruit is loaded with vitamin C, folate and fiber. Use it to make a refreshing mango salsa, blend it into a smoothie or add it to your favorite stir-fry for a burst of tropical sweetness.

Others to add for your fruitalicious fix: Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Cherries, Peaches, Plums, Nectarines, Figs, Grapes, Mulberries, Pawpaws and Persimmons. Opt for shopping at local farmers’ markets and co-ops to support the local economy and get the best of fresh, local produce.

Inaugural Black Mental Health Summit Paves the Way for Healing

and Advocacy

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Black Mental Health Summit, taking place on May 17, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at The Enterprise Events & Conference Center in downtown WinstonSalem. This groundbreaking event is the first of its kind and is gearing up to make a lasting impact on our community.

This summit shines a light on the importance of prioritizing mental health and specific issues facing the black community, improving wellness all around. To give a close look at the event and what attendees can expect, we interviewed the founder, Alexia Mitchell, a licensed clinical therapistassociate and the owner of Reset and Heal, LLC. The summit underscores her commitment to providing equitable access to mental health services for women and minorities in the Triad.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST “WHY” FOR DECIDING TO CREATE AND HOST THE BLACK MENTAL HEALTH SUMMIT?

I recognized the urgent need to address mental health issues within the black community – a demographic often disproportionately affected by mental health challenges yet facing significant barriers to accessing care. This initiative likely aims to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage open dialogues and provide culturally sensitive resources and support. By bringing together mental health professionals, community leaders and individuals with lived experiences, the summit seeks to foster a supportive environment where participants can learn, share and find pathways to healing and resilience.

WHAT DO YOU SPECIFICALLY HOPE TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS INITIATIVE?

Ultimately, my hope is to promote mental wellness, advocate for equitable mental health services and empower the black community to prioritize mental health.

WHAT ASPECTS OF MENTAL HEALTH DO YOU FEEL ARE PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY, AND HOW WILL THE SUMMIT ADDRESS THESE ISSUES?

The mental health of the black community is influenced by several significant factors, including systemic racism, socio-economic disparities and historical trauma, all of which necessitate a tailored approach to support and healing. The intersectionality of race, economic status and exposure to racism can lead to unique mental health challenges, such as increased rates of depression, anxiety and PTSD, often compounded by a historical mistrust of medical institutions. By addressing these aspects, the summit has the potential to make significant strides in improving the mental health outcomes for the black community, focusing on culturally sensitive, inclusive and effective solutions.

WHAT ROLE WILL MENTAL HEALTH EXPERTS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS INVOLVED IN THE SUMMIT PLAY IN SHAPING THE CONVERSATIONS AND RESOURCES PROVIDED?

The mental health experts and community leaders hold a pivotal role in shaping both the conversations and resources provided at the BMHS. Their expertise and insights are invaluable in identifying the most pressing mental health challenges and innovative solutions that can be applied at both individual and community levels. These professionals bring a wealth of knowledge from their respective fields, offering a diverse range of perspectives that can enrich discussions, ensuring that they are comprehensive and inclusive of various mental health issues. Through their guidance, the BMHS can facilitate meaningful dialogue, which will foster an environment where participants feel empowered to realize that they are not alone, and we all have some sense of shared experiences where we can learn from one another. Their involvement is crucial in ensuring that the BMHS not only raises awareness about mental health challenges but also equips individuals and communities with the resources to promote mental well-being and resilience.

IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE THING WITH READERS TO CONVINCE THEM THAT THIS EVENT IS WHERE THEY NEED TO BE ON MAY 17TH, WHAT IS IT?

The BMHS brings together mental health professionals, community leaders, and individuals with lived experiences to share knowledge, strategies and resources. Attendees not only gain access to valuable insights and tools for managing their mental health but also contribute to a larger movement towards mental health equity and justice. Oh, and it’s also going to be a vibe!

PEACE UNTO YOU

Just as I was about to wrap up our call with the customary “love you,” my girlfriend dropped a bombshell. We’ve known each other for a long time; her history was imprinted in the fabric of my mind and heart. Knowing this, she trusted that I’d be there with her as she grappled with a choice she regretted and an inner peace she felt she was losing.

The specifics are personal, and, for you and me, don’t matter. But inner peace – a priceless sense of being right with oneself – always does. There’s no place for smugness on this one. It’s deeply unsettling to be “off” on the inside; our foothold feels shaky, and we no longer trust ourselves to be and do what is right and true for us. It’s scary.

The beautiful thing is that we can work on building, strengthening and regaining the inner peace that is ours alone to nurture and cherish. Here’s how:

Self Acceptance...And Pursuing Your Best Self

For as long as you have breath, you are a valuable work in progress. Instead of fumbling your way through unmoored, be steadfastly intentional about defining your best version of you, the one you’re inspired to aspire to. That definition emerges when you take a deep look at your core spiritual beliefs, the values you live by and by simply envisioning the unique “footprint” you will leave behind in this life.

Peace With The Past...And The Next Right Thing

Forgive, forgive, forgive. Acknowledge that you did the best you knew how to do. Then, turn your forgiveness outward. Instead of holding onto hurt and resentment, consider what you can do right now that is aligned with that “best self” you aspire to be. Someone hurt me a long time ago, and I felt betrayed. But, in the here and now, I focus on how I can extend forgiveness and love to this person, even though that trust still bears a small crack. By keeping the focus on my choices, I reinforce that I can trust myself. That gives me a great deal of inner peace.

Clean Up What You

Can...And Learn From Your Mistakes

Take responsibility for the hurt or harm you may have caused. Be deliberate and generous in owning your actions and sincerely apologize. Actions like these are cleansing; they replace angst,

hurt and ugliness with a fresh sense of inner peace. But, don’t stop there. Take a good look at the whys behind your actions. Start to understand what triggers you to be and to act in ways that don’t support the vision you hold for yourself.

Pause When Your Buttons Are Pushed...Then Choose Your Response

And, when a button of yours is pushed, rein in your habitual reaction by creating a space before responding. Maybe that means not texting someone back immediately or saying “I don’t know how to respond. I need to think about what you just said.” Remember that we can’t take back what we put out there, so speak mindfully. Consider your truth, the other person’s feelings and perspective, as well as your relationship. It does take practice!

See Perfectionism For What It Is...And Then Decide Where You Will Put Your Energy

I’m taking a hard stance on this one – inner peace is unattainable when grasping for the carrot of perfectionism is in play. Why? Because there is always something better just beyond what you are trying so hard to attain. More wealth, more beauty, more success, more health, more happiness, more, more, more... don’t allow yourself to be snared in this trap. Instead, get clear about what is enough and how you want to be in this life. By acting accordingly, you will find peace.

Observe How You Cope...And Embrace Positive Coping When Things Get Tough

No one can completely dodge difficulty or sorrow. Those experiences come with this human journey no matter who you are. So, take some time to consider your current coping mechanisms and how they have served you. And then – because you have a clear sense of the person you aspire to be – do a little housekeeping. Focus on incorporating more positive coping skills when the ride gets a little rough.

A new exhibition at Sawtooth School for Visual Art, presented with Salem College, champions women artists and furnituremakers working today while also making history in the process.

Seating Assignment: Women in Contemporary Chairmaking and Craft Education, the first survey exhibition of its kind, features 14 chairs designed and fabricated by 15 women from all over the country. The chairs on display are diverse, ranging from the fantastical to the scientific, and all represent a high level of skill and creativity.

Annie Evelyn’s Red Diamonds has a majestic presence, resembling a throne with an upholstered scarlet train trailing behind it, while Stacy Motte and Eleanor Ingrid Rose’s Spread evokes transition – their piece depicts a chair, side table and decorative dishware seemingly breaking apart and blending into each other.

Sophie Glenn’s ladderback chair looks like a typical one you’d see in farmhouses and antique stores all around the Triad…but step closer, and you’ll find it’s made entirely of metal.

Aspen Golann’s Ladies’ Armchair (Portrait of the Artist as a Chair) uses traditional woodworking methods to create a contemporary piece, ornate and bubblegum pink, that both critiques and celebrates the history of American decorative arts.

When Rebecca Juliette-Duex, the exhibition’s curator and Sawtooth’s 2023 Gondring Resident in Woodworking, visited Salem College’s Sutton Initiative for Design Education (SIDE) Chair Library, she was amazed by the regional treasure’s collection.

The SIDE Chair Library is home to a handpicked selection of nearly 50 chairs considered historically significant in design and still in production. Salem students and community members can not only visit the library, but they are also encouraged to interact with the chairs – to sit in them, turn them

upside down, measure them and ponder their construction and materials.

Juliette-Duex noticed the primary users of this library are also the least represented by gender and diversity in the collection. To promote inclusivity, she began working on a presentation showcasing the many women furniture makers who reconfigure classic shapes to speak about their own experience in a field where they have been historically excluded, along with those in the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.

Working alongside Dr. Rosa Otero, Associate Professor of Design at Salem College and curator of the SIDE Chair Library; Josie Vogel, Sawtooth’s Director of Wood Programs; and Rebecca Silberman, Sawtooth’s Director of Operations + Registration, Juliette-Duex and the team transformed a one-off lecture into a landmark gallery show open for the community to see.

“The hope is that this exhibition will not only shine light on the work that is being done today and project it into the future, but will also reflect that light back in time to the women who were there all along and whose contributions have been forgotten, intentionally or otherwise,” said Juliette-Duex.

Seating Assignment features Katie Bister, Christina Boy, Annie Evelyn, Sophie Glenn, Aspen Golann, Elsa Hoffman, Joyce Lin, Laura Mays, Stacy Motte + Eleanor Ingrid Rose, Sabiha Mujtaba, Ellie Richards, Janine Wang, Kimberly Winkle and Salem College students.

The exhibition is on view in Sawtooth’s Eleanor and Egbert Davis Gallery during its regular opening hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am –7:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Make sure to stop by before this incredible celebration of women artists closes on Saturday, May 11th!

Sawtooth School for Visual Art is located at 251 North Spruce Street in downtown WinstonSalem. For more information about the exhibition and associated programming, call Sawtooth at 336.723.7395 or visit sawtooth.org/ seatingassignment.

Conversation with Your BFF

“Should My Partner and I Share Our Financial Accounts?”

We’re taught our entire lives to share. From an early age, sharing is a lesson it seems we are bombarded with from our first toy and saying “mine!” as we take it from our sibling(s). The opposite of sharing is being selfish, right? Well, when you have a partner in life, whether that is a significant other or a spouse, is it a good idea to share all your financial funds from savings to checking accounts? And, if you don’t choose to co-mingle your funds, are you then being selfish? I am so glad you asked!

Whether it is through cohabitation or marriage, there comes a point in most serious, long-term relationships when we start talking about banks, checking and savings accounts and, down the road, retirement accounts. Two things are true for sure…life is complicated and money is messy! Researchers have found over decades of studies that arguing about money is the top

predictor of whether or not a couple will get divorced, so making decisions together about money is a good idea.

JOINT OR SEPARATE ACCOUNTS

In dual-income couples, you don’t have to choose joint or separate accounts, you could try both!

After interviewing financial advisors, the easiest set-up for couples is to have a joint account that both fund to pay shared expenses like rent or mortgage and utilities; then, each partner can have separate accounts to pay for individual expenses. Both partners can share in the day-to-day needs of life while maintaining financial independence. A joint account requires transparency and mutual trust and shows a shared commitment towards a common goal.

In most relationships, either you or your partner has a higher income, so splitting expenses based on your income is more fair than dividing things up down the middle. Deciding on what is fair will take a bit of communication and some basic math skills for sure.

SAVING FOR THE FUTURE, EITHER TOGETHER OR APART

There are many ways that individuals in a relationship differ and one of those is how to save for a rainy day. You and your significant other can have different goals and interests, but you can decide on certain items to tackle together like a vacation. When you are both on the same page in saving for something you both will enjoy and benefit from, you grow together as a couple. But, while you are saving for that new home renovation or trip, don’t neglect your 401(k) and make sure you both are contributing to those.

NEVER GIVE ANYONE TOO MUCH CONTROL OVER YOUR FINANCES

I have had many conversations with friends who decided with their spouses to take on the role of homemaker once they married or moved in together. They completely disregard any thought of money or dealing with it, which may work in the present, but down the road may not work out. A friend of mine had no idea when bills were due, how they were paid and never thought about having passwords to access accounts online. Unfortunately, her husband was tragically killed in a car accident and, along with her grief, she had to learn, during the worst time in her life, about the monthly bills all while continuing to raise her children without their dad. She never thought she would need to deal with bills because that was “his job,” but she quickly learned all that her husband did that she had no idea about. It is always good, even if you don’t consider dealing with money your area of expertise in a relationship, that you can continue on in life should the unthinkable happen. Whether or not you want to wade into the financial dimension of your relationship, you really should have knowledge of the everyday expenses, how to make payments and how to access online accounts. No matter how much you trust and love someone, remember you are your first priority, and never forget that fact!
