AN INTERVIEW WITH JULIE PERROTT
Have you ever heard the saying “A good stylist is cheaper than a good therapist?” This saying couldn’t be more true for Julie Perrott at Alkali Hair Studio. After all, she graduated with a psychology degree before discovering her passion for hair!
On top of her psychological prowess, Julie’s also in tune with the science behind the services she provides. While she doesn’t technically offer therapy to her clients, this unique combination of skills allows Julie to deliver client experiences unlike any other stylist.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO HAIR INSTEAD OF BECOMING A PSYCHOLOGIST?
Actually, I had a childhood dream of becoming a hairstylist but I thought it was just my obsession with the Madonna “Vogue” era. I was also always interested in psychology and thought it’d be a great career choice. But when I moved to Chicago and got a job as a receptionist at a popular salon, that dream resurfaced and I realized it wasn’t just a childhood dream after all. It was what I was meant to do! Ultimately, becoming a hairdresser is like the best of both worlds. I get to help my clients look and feel good!
YOU RECENTLY BECAME A BOARD-CERTIFIED HAIR COLORIST (CONGRATULATIONS)! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN AND HOW DOES IT BENEFIT YOUR CLIENTS?
Thank you! Yes, I got certified in 2023. It was a huge milestone for me! It’s always been important to me to deliver beautiful color and maintain the health of the hair. Getting board-certified has helped me achieve this goal in new, scientifically-backed ways for even better results. Continuing education of all types keeps me inspired and creative behind the chair.
HOW DO YOU APPLY YOUR PSYCHOLOGY AND SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE WHEN DOING HAIR?
For me, the consultation is the most important part of any hair appointment. It’s my chance to learn about the client’s hair
needs and lifestyle and gives me a fuller picture of them as a person. This way, I can make their hair dreams a reality while balancing what’s realistic for their hair texture, health, natural color, tone, and daily routine. For example, if a client wants a mermaid/unicorn hairstyle but I can’t give them that exact look right away, I can explain why it’s not possible and create a plan for achieving their desired look while giving them a look they’ll still love as we work toward their goal.
WHAT TYPE OF CLIENT BEST MATCHES YOUR PERSONALITY?
Maybe it’s the psychologist in me, but I love that each client is different. No two days or appointments are the same and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
OUTSIDE OF BEAUTY, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
I love doing all forms of arts and crafts and DIY home projects. Lately, I’ve been giving my older pieces of furniture a colorful new look. Who knows what project next month will bring?!

I know many of us are probably a tad sick of this heat, but you know what? I always love the month of August. The back-toschool excitement sticks with me as an adult for some reason. Speaking of back to school, I have to share this photo with you of ALL the school supply donations we collected at our July Girls’ Night Out event! We love supporting the Educator Warehouse each year, and this year was no different. Learn more about this incredible nonprofit on page 76.
Just a few days ago, I had the pleasure of recording episode 200 of the Forsyth Magazines podcast! 200 episodes?! Isn’t
that crazy? And, the coolest part was, I had on the same guests that were featured in episode #1 for episode 200 – Cheri and Justin Lingafelt, the owners of Accent Prone. These two are a power couple, and it’s always a pleasure to get to sit down and chat with them. They recently opened a second location in the Lake Norman area, and I couldn’t be more proud to follow along with their journey! ACKNOWLEDGEMENT LEVELS at work

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING ARE EXAMPLES OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT?
• “Hey, how’re you doin’?”
• “That was awesome!”
• “You are incredible.”
They all are because acknowledgement comes in several shapes, sizes and forms. For example:
• “Hey, how’re you doin’?” describes being noticed by someone.
• “That was awesome!” describes being recognized for something you did.
• “You are incredible.” describes the least common form of acknowledgement –being appreciated for who you are.
For managers and coworkers alike, each of these has its place at work. Here’s a deeper dive:
When you use an “I Notice You” acknowledgement, you are saying “I recognize your presence or existence.” It’s a micro-second glance, a wave of a hand or a quick flash of a smile and communicates that you see them and are connecting with them, instead of ignoring them. It’s the most fundamental expression of respect that one human extends to another.
Acknowledgement at this level is a simple human courtesy. You might even say it’s decency, or common sense – and I would agree. However, in workplaces where people report feeling shunned, dismissed or disrespected, they often cite the absence of this basic human form of acknowledgement. This “missed opportunity” is especially disturbing to employees when leaders – you know, the people whose example they are expected to follow – fail to acknowledge them. When human beings at work are not “noticed,” they feel disrespected. That’s when a dangerous spiral is set into motion. Their anger becomes hurt, and their hurt contributes to feeling disengaged which is why they often check out emotionally. When we fail to acknowledge by noticing, we make people feel “invisible” while demonstrating a fundamental lack of respect for them.
When you use an “I Recognize You” acknowledgement, you are calling out something specific someone did or contributed. You might say “Thank you, I appreciate what you did.” You might “package” that acknowledgement and gratitude in spoken words, a note, an email or a text. Or maybe that recognition takes the form of a plaque, certificate, money or gift card.
Here’s something to think about – research estimates that approximately 50,000 thoughts go through our heads each day and that, on average, 80% of them are negative. Some of these thoughts are directed internally, in the form of “negative self-talk.” With that much ugly happening on the inside, it’s little wonder that genuine acknowledgement has a strong, positive effect on us and matters in a big way!
In fact, it drives both engagement and performance! Case in point – one of the top six attributes of leaders of high performing teams is
that their employees said “yes” to this question: “In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for good work?”
Now here’s a curious and disturbing twist – even in workplaces where recognition is practiced and celebrated, leaders don’t always practice “acknowledging by noticing.” And that’s what employees notice. In other words, if you acknowledge me by recognizing me, but you fail to acknowledge me by noticing me, you are sending a mixed message, and that impacts trust.
When you use an “I Appreciate You” acknowledgement, you are shining a light on someone’s fundamental worth and value. This is the deepest and most profound form of acknowledgement because it goes beyond noticing and is unattached to a specific reason for recognizing. It tells the other person that you have respect for something special about him or her – a gift, strength, quality or characteristic that makes that person who he or she is. And, it has nothing to do with “what you did for me lately.”
So, where are you? Is there a level of acknowledgement that is a strength for you? Where is your opportunity?

STAY IN THE FIGHT!

I talk to so many people in a day who fight for things that seem so ridiculously out of reach. Just maybe, I’m talking to YOU!
You’ve believed in a turnaround. You’ve held on for dear life, knowing the tide must turn soon because the cliff is imminent. I hear you!
Let’s face it, when the fight feels long and the victory seems uncertain, it’s easy to quit or, at the very least, slow our roll.
Let’s get real for a minute. Fighting for the right things is not for wimps. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it!
Maybe you’re fighting for your marriage that spirals to new lows daily. Perhaps you’re fighting for your children that presently break your heart with their destructive choices. Maybe it’s a diagnosis that scares you sleepless, but you’re giving it all you’ve got to overcome!
Believe it or not, everyone you know is in a fight for something. It can be exhausting!
This is why we’ve got to choose wisely!
Make sure you’re fighting for the right things. Make sure you’re fighting with the right tools.
The Apostle Paul calls this life of Faith, “The Good Fight!” It’s the right fight with weapons that win! But, even the good fight doesn’t exempt us from pain and difficulty. EVERY FIGHT COMES WITH A PRICE!
You’ll pay a price now to get where you want to go, or you’ll pay it later because you avoided the fight. So, stop avoiding pain and difficulty. Pay the price now, and enjoy your harvest later! Whatever you do, just STAY IN THE FIGHT!
You’re not going to believe this, but I promise it’s true! When we stay in the fight, it makes us stronger! It keeps us in peak condition! No joke!
Consider this. Long before airplanes, the west coast desperately wanted cod delivered from the east coast. Great minds brainstormed the possibilities.
Initially, shipmates loaded cod on boats to travel south all the way around to the west coast for delivery. Problem was, by the time they arrived, the fish had gone bad. So, they tried keeping cod alive in tanks as they traveled that long distance. Still, by the time they reached their destination, the cod proved tasteless.
Then, someone had this crazy idea to put catfish in tanks with the cod as they embarked the long distance from east coast to west coast. Catfish are predators of cod!
That’s right. They placed the enemy of the cod in the tank so that the cod had to fight for their lives the entire journey. When they arrived on the west coast this time, the cod demonstrated that they were in peak condition!
Are you getting this? The cod deteriorated and diminished in the comfort of the tank without a fight. But, as soon as they added an enemy that kept them on their toes, they skyrocketed in strength and endurance.
Listen friend, in this life, there will always be things that fight us and make us fight back. Don’t run from the fight. Run to it if it’s the right fight. God has a way of infusing you with His strength in such a way that you can run without growing weary. You can walk and not faint while others around you bite the dust.
Why are you fighting? What’s your end goal? Is it for a righteous reason? Then know this! If you are in God and God is in you, the fight is fixed! In God, YOU WIN! For real! He’s never lost a battle! EVER!
Whatever you do, don’t quit! STAY IN THE FIGHT! Victory has never been closer than right now!

This month’s featured creator, Jazmine Moore, taps into her perseverance and strength to capture works of art that hold a collection of emotions bringing beauty and healing to the observer.
How would you describe your work?
My artwork is unique, uplifting, mystical and meaningful. My passion for nature, the anatomy of faces, my spirituality and the unknowns of this world greatly influences my artwork. I use acrylic and many mixed media elements of the Earth such as crystals, beads, herbs and oils to create my 3D elemental masterpieces and portrait artwork. Each of my pieces is made to exude feelings such as joy, peace, love, abundance, happiness, prosperity and calmness.
What influences your art?
I’ve loved art since I was a child and believe the creative gene runs in my family with nearly all my mother’s side of the family being artists or creators. In 2014, at the age of 19, I tragically lost my mother, Cheryl Bethea, to domestic violence while I was five months pregnant with my daughter and had a nine-month-old son. That horrific event truly sparked me to start painting. I sought an outlet for healing, and it was like the paintbrushes and canvas were begging to be picked up. What started as a simple escape from reality grew to take on a deeper significance. During the toughest periods of my life – moments of intense sadness, loss and confusion – art helped me cope. I like to look at it as alchemy; life takes me on a ride, and I take my artwork with me, letting it guide me.
How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?
I started off painting portraits of people and, overtime, branched off into mixed media and eventually mixed the two! I’m now diving into mural artwork because I think it’s so amazing how someone can transform a large blank wall into something so beautiful. I’ve learned to go with the flow with what I am curious about at the moment. I’ve evolved to not being so hard on myself and to not compare my artwork with others because we are all on different journeys. I’ve also learned that mistakes mean progress and not failure.
How do you carve out time to be creative?
As a mom of three, with a one-year, 10-year and a nine-year-old, carving out time to be creative can be a challenge. I often create while my children are playing or at school, but I also love creating around them so they can see the process. However, if I really need to fully focus with no disruptions while I’m creating, I ask for help from their father or another family member to be with them.
Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects, and why?
One of my favorite pieces is called “Strength” which is a painting of a lion. During that time in my life, I was going through so much! I was depressed and pregnant with my third child. I literally cried while painting it, yet it felt so liberating. I felt like I was channeling the inner warrior within myself to push through, fight and keep going. It was my first lion piece, and it’s amazing to look at it and see so much of what I was feeling represented. When I gave birth to my daughter, I was sitting in the birthing pool at home watching that painting, and I envisioned the strength of the lion as I pushed through the waves of my contractions; I knew I could do it. Although the painting is sold now, it holds a special place in my heart.
What are you working on that excites you right now?
My mind is always overflowing with massive ideas! Recently, I pivoted into becoming a children’s book author. As a little girl, I used to read books to my stuffed animals and finally my dreams of becoming a children’s book author came true! I created a positive affirmation children’s book called, “I Am Who I Say I Am” to inspire children, like my own, to believe in themselves and their abilities so that they can become their greatest selves.
What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?
Never stop creating! Creativity is in abundance just like the grass outside and part of who we are! Even when life gets you down or you feel discouraged that your artwork is not where you want it to be, keep your heart open to creating. Let the world see your creations without the judgments of your own mind. Someone out there sees the magic in you and your work!

In recent years, GLP-1 agonists such as Semaglutide, Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro have gained attention for their significant benefits in weight loss and blood sugar control. These medications utilize the GLP1 peptide, a naturally occurring hormone produced in the brain and gut, to help individuals achieve better health outcomes.
UNDERSTANDING GLP-1
GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, plays a crucial role in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. This hormone is secreted in the brain, where it suppresses hunger, and in the gut, where it improves the body’s response to blood sugar and slows gastric emptying. The dual action of GLP-1 makes it a powerful tool in managing weight and metabolic health.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND SEMAGLUTIDE
Semaglutide, a key player among GLP-1 agonists, closely resembles the amino acid structure of GLP-1, allowing it to bind to the same receptors and produce similar effects. However, the naturally occurring GLP-1 peptide has a very short half-life of just five minutes, as it is rapidly broken down by enzymes in the body. In contrast, Semaglutide boasts a much longer half-life of seven days or more, providing sustained benefits and making it a practical therapeutic option.
BENEFITS AND APPLICATIONS
The extended half-life of Semaglutide and its counterparts like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro makes it highly effective in certain situations. These medications are particularly beneficial for individuals with a higher body mass index (BMI) and those managing type 2 diabetes. By mimicking the body’s natural hormones, GLP-1 agonists help regulate appetite and blood sugar without the stimulant effects associated with other weight loss medications.
One of the most significant advantages of these medications is their ability to jump-start positive changes. When people see the scale move and experience reduced hunger, they often find it easier to adopt healthier habits. This can be a crucial motivator for long-term lifestyle changes.

Relying solely on medication without making dietary and exercise changes can lead to a rebound effect once the medication is discontinued. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OPTIMAL USE
To maximize the benefits and minimize the risks associated with GLP-1 agonists, consider the following recommendations:
1. Find the Right Dose: Work with a healthcare provider to determine a dose that effectively manages hunger without eliminating it entirely. This balance will allow for regular meal consumption and prevent nutrient deficiencies.
2. Focus on Protein: Aim for three balanced meals per day, each containing 30-50 grams of protein. Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass and overall health. Setting a timer for meal times can help ensure you don’t forget to eat.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FORMATIVE YEARS. WHERE DID YOU GROW UP, AND WHAT WERE YOUR EARLY EXPERIENCES THAT SHAPED WHO YOU ARE TODAY?
I was 18 months old when our dad moved the family to Kernersville. We had lived there less than a month when he was killed in a car wreck. He was only 30 years old. Our grandmother moved in to help raise us while Mom worked, sometimes two jobs. Mom never remarried.
My life was deeply influenced by the example set by my mom and grandmother. Both godly women, they taught me to work hard and love unconditionally. These women made great sacrifices for my brother and me. Our grandmother made sure we knew all about Jesus and His unconditional love. I knew I wanted to love like Jesus!
ONCE YOU KNEW YOUR CALLING INTO SERVICE, WHERE AND HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
I’d never given a lot of thought about “my calling.” I figured I was living it out…work, marriage, raising two kids. What else was
there? But, I heard a sermon that really hit me hard. The pastor said, “God has a plan for every life. Ask Him to give you a passion, and He will reveal your calling.” I was 64 years old! What calling could God have for me?
I certainly didn’t imagine “my calling” would involve helping the homeless. I’d never really given a lot of thought to homelessness in our community until one January evening when my nephew asked me to help pack bag lunches and visit the Emergency Homeless Overflow Shelter. I had no idea what to expect. But, that night changed my life forever!
God had given me a passion, a longing to love and to help hurting people. I connected with a friend at church who had been dropping off food and supplies at homeless encampment sites. We started Helping Hands Ministry in 2014.
TELL US ALL ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION YOU LEAD.
Simply put, Helping Hands is a group of Christ followers, each with a passion to improve the lives of the homeless, the hungry, the impoverished and the hurting in our communities. Since 2014, we’ve been blessed to partner with many other ministries and organizations.
Before Covid-19, God kept us very busy…I rarely said “no” to an opportunity to serve. It’s amazing how He always opens doors and provides the resources we need to do His will. For years, we served two meals a month at the Rescue Mission, covered check-in each Monday night at the Overflow Emergency Homeless Shelter and provided clothing, boots, underwear, socks, blankets, food and household items.
GIVE US PERSPECTIVE INTO WHAT SATISFACTION YOU GAIN FROM WHAT YOU DO ON A DAILY BASIS. Everyone deserves to be loved, encouraged and valued. I think it’s important that we face
every day with this goal…to walk in God’s light and to serve Him. There’s great satisfaction if, at the end of the day, I’ve been an encouragement to someone, and I give God the glory.
PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF A TIME THAT MOVED YOU DEEPLY WHEN HELPING OTHERS.
For the last six years, our Helping Hands Ministry has served at the WinstonSalem Rescue Mission, providing meals, supplies and support. It honestly feels like a partnership where we walk alongside these men as the Mission guides them through their addiction recovery and restoration. God is real and working in the lives of these men.
WHAT IS NOW MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AND WHY?
I’ll admit, since Covid, so many things have changed. My husband and I seem to have aged too quickly. But, God is so so good! At 74 and 76, He has blessed us with good health and a willingness to continue serving.
God can use you…no matter your age. It’s important that we continue to follow His calling.

After nearly 100 years in operation, Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina has mastered building significant relationships that truly make a difference.
“Our message back to the community is simple and heartfelt,” says Chief Communications and Public Affairs Officer Ginger Salt. “The Good We Do is Because of You!”
With 51 locations in 31 counties across northwest North Carolina, the nonprofit transitions 87 percent of its revenue to mission and sustainability, with donations to retail stores funding a variety of programs. Goodwill services are individually designed to meet the placement needs of both first time workers and those reentering the workplace, especially for those who may face employment obstacles. That includes veterans, those who have been downsized, dislocated or have disabilities.
Goodwill’s Mission Advancement team works diligently to stay connected within the community, always aligned with local employers looking to hire. Their Business Advisory Councils are one way those connections are made, and Winston-Salem resident Luba Havraniak is a shining example of how those cultivated relationships lead to happy endings!
When Luba discovered the Goodwill Career Center on Peters Creek Parkway, she had been laid off from her job as an HR professional at a local medical facility. Dedicated to finding a new position, she visited the center daily, applied for jobs and checked her email for responses. She recalls that even when she felt discouraged, the Career Center team cheered her on.
“The Goodwill team was truly supportive in helping me find a new role,” Luba shares. “Their resources are helpful for anyone seeking a new job, and we need to get the word out that this is a free community resource. I’ve told people about my experience, and many are unaware of its presence in our community! There are computers, printers, faxes, counselors and free advice.”
Luba says the team was instrumental in moving her in the right direction to find a new job. Her best advice – don’t give up, there is something out there for everyone!
In Luba’s case, Kaisha McDermott-Carter, the director of Goodwill’s career programs in Forsyth County, attended a meeting of the Business Advisory Councils and connected with a representative of Gastroenterology Associates of the Piedmont (GAP). When Kaisha learned that GAP needed HR employees, she immediately thought of Luba’s background in healthcare Human Resources and sent over her resumé. Within a week, she had an interview and was hired soon after.
Another impactful initiative to achieve goals in education, employment and life skills, Goodwill offers a wide array of youth services for ages 13 to 24, focused on reaching both academic and vocational potential.
The NextGen Youth Program provides structure and a sense of accomplishment with a program comprising two main components –education and employment. While completion of a secondary education program is the primary goal, the staff also provides post-secondary education counseling and career guidance.
Participant Avionna Hamlet joined the NextGen program in January 2023, arriving with enthusiasm and a goal to successfully complete the Nursing Assistant I program at Forsyth Technical Community College. She did just that, receiving her Certification of Completion from Forsyth Tech in June of that year. She then passed the NC State Nurse Aide I exam and was motivated to receive a Nursing Assistant I as soon as possible. She began her new Nursing Assistant I position at the wonderful Arbor Acres in July 2023. But, Avionna isn’t stopping there! She’s happily completing her final class for the Dental Assistant Program and will then complete the Dental Assisting National Board Exam in August 2024. From there, Avionna will begin the Dental Hygienist two-year program beginning in the Fall of 2025, proving where education and determination can lead!
OneLife, another Goodwill-funded program, works with the school system – targeting students who are at risk for behaviors that could negatively affect their high school graduation and transition into adulthood. Youth Connections serves the needs of out-of-school youth, while Youth Services focuses on kids coming out of foster care or those who need help getting started in the workforce. From assistance in obtaining a high school diploma or GED to job readiness training, Goodwill programs offer youth a path to self-discovery, often in partnership with other community organizations.
“We’re proud of both Luba’s hard work and dedication, and Avionna’s perseverance to reach for her goals,” Ginger adds.

THE HUMBLE HARE
Native to Mount Airy, The Humble Hare has been open since 2022 by Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care and has been offering locals a plethora of pre-owned home décor, clothing and furniture ever since. Shopping at The Humble Hare helps support patients and families in need of financial assistance in order to pay for hospice care.

As a Creative Reuse Center nonprofit organization, Reconsidered Goods is home to donated housewares, craft and office supplies, furniture, hardware, books, toys, accessories and more. Materials collected at the organization help businesses and individuals, as well as the environment.
In addition to a warehouse and retail store where material and financial donations are accepted regularly, Reconsidered Goods also offers educational programs and events to the community. Summer camps are popular for children in June and July, while professional development opportunities are available to those interested in expanding their knowledge of creative reuse.

My Skincare Routine:

Okay, let me be honest. While growing up, I would wash my face, but I never did anything else. I would never put daily SPF on my face or use a moisturizer. I believed that washing my face was a good routine. Flash forward to today and now, I am 23 years old, and I enjoy the simple skincare routine that I have every morning and night. Spending time doing my skincare routine also allows me some time to relax which I enjoy. Today, there is an overflow of skincare routines and products shared on social media. The amount of skincare products available in stores can make it feel overwhelming when trying to buy a face wash or a moisturizer. In this article, I am going to provide answers to questions that I have asked myself on how to build a simple skincare routine.
WHAT TYPES OF PRODUCTS SHOULD I USE?
When I first began building my skincare routine, I was unsure of what types of products to use. I knew to use a face wash and SPF, but besides these two products, I did not know what else to include in my routine. Currently, I use a face wash, a toner, a serum, a moisturizer and a sunscreen. There are many more types of products that you can add to your routine, but to keep my routine easy, I stick to these products. Sometimes, your skincare routine can change between the morning and night. For instance, I use a different face wash at night that removes makeup better, and I do not use a serum at night. Honestly, it is fun to have some trial and error with discovering what products you like to use only in the morning, only at night or during both times of the day.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT BRANDS OF PRODUCTS TO USE?
It is difficult to know what brands of products to use as there are many brands out there to try. I have found that trying different products has been the best way for me to discover what works best on my skin. Sometimes I will buy travel sizes of products to help save money when trying out skincare products. It truly is trial and error as you do not know what products you will like until you actually try them out on your skin. For instance, sometimes I will try products that make my skin feel smooth which I like, and other times products will make my face feel tight which I do not like.
Where Should I Start?
WHAT RESOURCES CAN HELP ME WITH BUILDING A SKINCARE ROUTINE?
Thankfully, there are many wonderful resources available to help when creating a skincare routine. A few of the resources out there include online quizzes, social media, talking with your dermatologist and finding local places in the Winston-Salem area where you can purchase skincare products. In the past, I have enjoyed taking online skincare quizzes that recommend products for me. I have also learned about certain skincare tricks and tips from social media. Additionally, talking with your dermatologist can be another excellent way to find products that work well for you. There are also many wonderful local places to purchase skincare products in the Winston-Salem area. With so many resources available, there are plenty of helpful tips for finding a skincare routine that works for you.
If you are reading this article and are looking for ways to build a skincare routine, my hope is that this article will provide you with helpful tips on how to create a simple skincare routine for the mornings and evenings.
Downsizing Strategies
We are getting more and more calls from the aging demographic who are desiring to downsize and need help with the entire process. Part of our repertoire of services includes providing an itemized and strategic plan to transition into their new, albeit smaller, living quarters.
This plan begins with the task of deciding what to do with their belongings, which can be daunting for our clients. By downsizing their home, they may also be downsizing their storage space. Commonly, most people downsize to about half the space they previously lived in. This means more than a 50% reduction in possessions. This doesn’t pertain to furniture as much as décor pieces and knick-knacks. Accumulated mementoes and other items forgotten, those thought too precious to dispose of at one time, in the attic are a good place to start. Another method we’re fond of is making a list of what they want to keep, then narrowing it down to what they need to keep. While it may take many hours of sorting and decision-making on what to keep, it allows us to have a better understanding of the space when the pieces remaining are those that we must configure into the design.
If the neighborhood our clients reside in allows estate or yard sales, we suggest that as a possibility to downsize their belongings. Another option is to bring in an auction firm to purchase and pick up the larger and more valuable pieces.
It is estimated that as many as 45 million households will be making the transition of downsizing in 2024. If you’re thinking of joining that demographic, give us a call.

This (One Bowl) Lemon Chantilly Cake has soft lemon cake layers with a fluffy vanilla cream cheese frosting for a light, summery dessert that is worthy of turning on your oven! It stays moist up to four days, so it’s a perfect make ahead for your next dinner party.
Servings: 12-14 Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 40 minutes
INGREDIENTS
For the Lemon Chantilly Cake:
2 1/3 cup Cake Flour
Zest of 2 Lemons & Juice of 1 Lemon
1 ½ cups Granulated Cane Sugar
3 tsp. Baking Powder
¼ tsp. Baking Soda
½ tsp. Fine Sea Salt
8 T Unsalted Butter, softened, cubed
½ cup Olive Oil
3 large Eggs, room temperature
1 ¼ cup Whole Milk, room temperature
2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
INSTRUCTIONS
For Cream Cheese Frosting:
30 oz. Powdered Sugar
16 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
2 sticks Unsalted Butter, softened 2/3 cup Heavy Cream
2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
Yellow Food Coloring (optional)
1. For the Lemon Chantilly Cake: Preheat oven to 350F. Butter and line two 8” cake pans with parchment. Set aside.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the lemon zest and sugar. Rub together with your fingers to release the lemon essential oils.
3. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt to the bowl. Mix well.
4. Add the softened butter, and use your fingers to break up into the flour mixture until crumb-like texture.
5. Add the lemon juice, olive oil, vanilla and HALF of the milk. Whisk vigorously for one to two minutes, until doubled in volume and pale in color.
6. Add the eggs and remaining milk. Mix just until smooth.
7. Divide the cake batter between the two prepared baking pans.
8. Bake for 20-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
9. Let cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then remove from the pan to cool completely.
10. (Optional) Once completely cooled, slice each cake layer in half to create four thin cake layers.
11. For the Cream Cheese Frosting: Add the softened butter and cream cheese to a stand mixer bowl fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on HIGH speed for two to three minutes, scraping down the sides as needed, until smooth.
12. Add half of the powdered sugar and mix on medium-low speed until incorporated. Add the heavy cream and then the remaining powdered sugar one cup at a time. Add the vanilla and increase speed to HIGH to beat for 6-8 minutes, until light and fluffy. Add yellow food coloring to desired preference.

What if an attic could become a joyful living space instead of an unused storage space? This transformation on Carolina Circle answers that very question while illuminating the many benefits of an attic renovation.
Homeowner Ileana Jacks partnered with ICON Custom Builders to tackle her attic project, after two successful renovations with the ICON team. Her goal was to create additional living space for her family of five, and optimize it for her three growing children.
“Our kids are getting older and having their own space was important for our family,” Jacks shared.
ICON transformed the unfinished attic space previously used as storage into
several beautiful, functional spaces. The reconfigured floor plan allowed for a new “bonus space” – perfect for creative activities, games, and relaxation.
Jacks said, “now it is a colorful, fun, open place that is used constantly.”
In addition, ICON improved the layout in her sons’ bathroom, elevated her daughter’s bedroom and bathroom design, and refreshed the reading nook area, all while incorporating details to make the spaces feel cohesive. Take Your MEDS for Better Health: Meditation, Exercise, Diet and Sleep

The world today is a pretty stressful place. Although life seemingly has returned to normal postpandemic, the American Psychological Association says that we are experiencing post traumatic effects that have altered our mental and physical health.
Further, widespread trauma has not been limited to the pandemic. Global conflict, racism and racial injustice, inflation and climate-related disasters are all weighing on the collective consciousness of Americans. So, what can we do to mitigate the ever-increasing levels of stress?
The best thing you can do is to care for yourself by taking your MEDS! I don’t mean to take medication. Let’s break it down.
MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment –and accepting it without judgment. Scientific examination has validated that mindfulness is a key element in stress reduction and overall happiness.
MOne powerful, yet simple, mindfulness activity involves conscious breathing. There are many different breathing patterns that you can use, but I like square breathing. You simply breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold at the top for a count of four, breathe out for a count of four and hold at the bottom for four.
Meditation involves sitting silently and paying attention to thoughts, sounds and sensations of breathing on parts of your body, bringing your attention back when your mind starts to wander. Other ways to practice mindfulness include yoga, tai chi and walking in nature focusing on the here and now.
EXERCISE
Exercising is recommended for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Exercise doesn’t have to be drudgery. Pick something you enjoy, and you will be much more likely to stick with it. Perhaps you like to dance, sign up for ZUMBA classes or download an app with dance workouts. Or, if you enjoy more organized activities, sign up for a pickleball or kickball league.
In addition, just getting more movement is important. You’ve probably heard that sitting is the new smoking. Many people have sedentary jobs. It’s important to be intentional about getting up and moving throughout the day.
DIET
I don’t mean go on one! I am referring to cultivating a healthy diet by eating lots of fruits and vegetables (strive for at least five servings per day) and trying to minimize your intake of processed foods. Reading labels and striving for five ingredients or less is a good guideline. In addition, watching your sugar and salt intake is important.
Eat regularly throughout the day and include foods that nourish the body to avoid getting hangry. If you are like me, it’s difficult to manage stress effectively – and be nice to people – when you’re hangry!
SLEEP
Some of us tend to brag about our lack of sleep and how busy we are as sort of a badge of honor. Sleep is very important, and most adults require seven to nine hours a night to be at their best.
In conclusion, the world is a pretty stressful place. Taking your MEDS will help you cultivate a better mindset and healthier body, which will in turn help you to be more resilient to deal with it.

The Choice That Sets You Free

It’s practically impossible for any of us to go through life without sometimes stepping on someone else’s toes. That means, of course, that sometimes it’s our own toes that get stomped on. Every time we are offended by another person, we have to decide whether we will forgive that person or whether we will harbor resentment. A simple choice, right? Sometimes yes, but it’s rarely quite as simple as it sounds. There’s a lot of confusion about forgiveness. And, that confusion often gets in the way of our forgiving someone. To understand what forgiveness really means, it helps to first be clear about what forgiveness doesn’t mean.
Forgiving someone does not mean:
• that what was done to you is okay.
• that the person is not accountable for what they did.
• that your pain doesn’t matter or that you should “just get over it.”
So, what does forgiveness mean? Simply put, forgiveness is the decision to no longer hold someone’s offense against them. It’s the choice to cancel the debt it feels like that other person owes you. But, when we’ve been deliberately insulted, violated or betrayed, and the wound is deep and painful, it can be very, very difficult to forgive. In fact, the more hurtful the offense, the harder it can be to forgive. So, how do we do it – and why should we?
That’s exactly what this book is about!
I learned so much in the process of researching and writing this book. One of my biggest personal “aha” moments was learning that there are two kinds of forgiveness – unilateral and transactional.
Unilateral forgiveness is one-sided forgiveness. It takes place entirely within the mind and heart of the offended person. The person who caused the hurt is not even involved. Because unilateral forgiveness requires nothing from the person who caused the offense, it doesn’t matter if that other person has asked for your forgiveness or not. It doesn’t matter if they have no remorse for what they did. It doesn’t matter if they’re not speaking to you. It doesn’t even matter if the person has died. You can still forgive them – because the purpose of unilateral forgiveness is to set yourself free! Forgiveness is for us, for our peace of mind and heart, for our happiness and for our spiritual and emotional freedom from the toxic effects of resentment and unforgiveness. Forgiving others brings about the inner freedom that God desires for us. This is where the title of the book comes from: Forgiveness: The Choice That Sets You Free.
The other kind of forgiveness is called transactional forgiveness. This kind of forgiveness is interpersonal, between two people. It involves a conversation between the person who was hurt and the person who hurt them. Transactional forgiveness can only occur if both people are willing. Usually it means one person is asking for forgiveness, and the other person is giving it. But often, it’s both people forgiving each other. Transactional forgiveness has the potential to restore broken relationships.
This forgiveness that leads to reconciliation is not “forgive and forget.” “Forgive and forget” is actually a myth – because we don’t have the ability to just decide to no longer remember something. Painful memories may dim over time, but it’s not likely that you’ll completely forget a deeply painful wrong that was done to you. Because of this, you may never get to the point where you feel like forgiving. The truth is, real forgiveness, like real love, is a choice. Forgiveness is ultimately a decision of the will, not the emotions.

We All Have Money Blind Spots Making Dollars, Making $ense
Blind spots, in the realm of investing, can be likened to the unnoticed smudges on a pair of glasses. They obscure a clear view of reality but can easily go unnoticed. In the world of finance, this can have costly implications.
Imagine Sarah, an IT executive. She’s tech savvy and feels very confident investing in the tech sector. She sees the potential in every new startup, understands the nuances of emerging technologies and believes fervently in a tech-dominated future. Because of this, Sarah’s portfolio is overly weighted in tech stocks. While she might understand the industry, she may have placed herself at risk if there’s a downturn in the tech sector. Sarah’s blind spot is an over-reliance on what she knows and loves.
Similarly, James, a loyal, long term employee of a publicly traded company, may hold a significant portion of his investments in his company’s stock. It might seem like a good strategy, given that he believes in the company’s mission and its potential. Yet, objectively, he may be exposed to high risk if that one company faces a headwind. His blind spot is the deep seated belief that his company stock is the right choice when diversification likely makes more sense.
Ava, a dedicated environmentalist, heavily invests in green companies. Her passion for sustainability guides her choices. However, her portfolio may be at risk due to its lack of diversification. While she believes in the potential of green energy, the industry is prone to market fluctuations and technological shifts. Ava’s blind spot is her emotional attachment to the cause, potentially overshadowing a well rounded investment strategy.
Managing these blind spots can be challenging, but here are a few steps you can take:
Diversify Your Portfolio: Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Diversification helps to spread risk across different types of investments. Even if you have a strong belief in a particular sector or company, it’s essential to have a mix of assets to cushion against potential downturns.
Seek Professional Advice: Just as an athlete might benefit from a coach, investors can gain perspective from financial advisors. These professionals can provide an objective view of your investments, helping you identify areas of risk and suggesting ways to optimize returns.

Every August, the Winston-Salem Open attracts more than 30,000 fans and five million global viewers, showcasing nearly 100 top men’s tennis players. The success of this event is attributed to a dedicated team working year round, led by Tournament Director Jeff Ryan and an exceptional group of eight women from Winston-Salem.
Jeff Ryan highlights the uniqueness of their local team in an industry reliant on seasonal employees. He says this local approach fosters a strong connection with the North Carolina community.
“Most tournaments are owned by a large company and use seasonal employees from around the country for an event. That is a successful business model, but another thing that makes us unique is that we are all in and of this North Carolina community,” says Ryan.
Jill Bowman, the sponsor services manager, collaborates with partners and oversees special ticket holders. She describes the event as a family reunion, reflecting the strong bonds formed within the team and with the fans.
“We are not alike, but we are. No matter what’s going on, we learn from each other. It’s really empowering especially in a field that’s historically been so dominated by men,” Bowman beams.
Megan Wilson, involved in the event’s management, started as an intern and now plays a significant role due to her love for the fast paced environment.
“I love the energy of the event industry, and I’ve always been interested in tennis because I played. The Winston-Salem Open is a unique opportunity to be involved at such a high professional level in my hometown,” she explains.

Ann Brown Campbell, managing the box office and ticket sales, brings her financial expertise to the team. She highlights the region’s rich tennis history and her personal connection to the sport. “We have such a history of tennis here thanks to years of the Flow Motors Invitational and three Davis Cups,” Campbell comments.
Caroline Downs, responsible for group sales and ticketing, combines her professional background and passion for tennis. Her experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced her desire to contribute to local tournaments, creating memorable experiences for young tennis fans. “Having a professional tournament in our backyard provides a unique experience for people to get up close to something that’s a big deal on the international stage,” Downs adds.
Haley Wilson joined the team with experience in organizing large scale events, including
a notable Women’s Tennis Association event during the pandemic. She found a sense of belonging within the Winston-Salem Open team.
“It’s an event the community really rallies around. I found a family. We really take care of each other and share our expertise,” Wilson says.
Jennifer Rackley, the newest member, brings a fresh perspective from her career as a physical therapist. Her involvement is driven by a desire to give back to the community and support women in sports. “To be involved with women helping women, especially women serving the community, is a privilege,” Rackley shares.
Robin Lindner, director of marketing communication, has been part of the tournament since its inception. She underscores the team’s dedication and the significant economic and social impact of the event on the local community.
“The tournament brings in about $5 million a year to our local economy, and it has given about $100,000 back to Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and to community tennis in the last five years. But, none of that would be possible without our team,” Lindner states.
Collectively, these women’s experiences illustrate the importance of diversity and inclusion in professional sports. They highlight how collaboration and community involvement elevate the Winston-Salem Open beyond a tennis tournament to a significant community event.

TRI TIP & HOMEMADE CHIMICHURRI SAUCE

This month, I wanted to share a cut of beef that has become a new favorite of mine – Tri Tip! This is a popular cut over on the west coast and can be a little harder to find around here. But, a lot of your local cattle farms and local butchers will know what you’re talking about when you ask for one!
I got this beautiful Tri Tip from Little Mountain Farm & Cattle Co. it was beautifully marbled and evenly shaped. A great thing about tri tip is the flavor; it’s kind of between a more fatty cut like a ribeye and a lean cut like a filet/tenderloin. So, you get a lot of that juicy flavor in every bite! As with basically every other cut of beef, we did a reverse sear on this and served it with a delicious homemade chimichurri sauce on top.
Ingredients:
• 1 Tri Tip
• SPG seasoning (salt, pepper & garlic)
– any kind works, or even just salt & pepper is fine
Chimichurri sauce ingredients:
• ½ C olive oil
• 2 T red wine vinegar
• ½ C parsley (finely chopped if doing this by hand – I just take the leaves off the stem and put all of these ingredients in a food processor)
• 3-4 cloves fresh garlic (chopped in half or thirds before food processor)
• 2 small red chilies (de-seeded and split in half, OR finely diced if doing by hand)
• ¾ tsp. dried oregano
• 1 tsp. sea salt, or kosher salt
• ½ tsp. crushed black pepper
• ½ tsp. crushed red pepper
Instructions:
1. The chimichurri is best if it can sit for a few hours or even a day before used, so make it ahead of time, and store it in the fridge.
2. How I do it is through a Ninja food processor – you add all of the above ingredients into the Ninja and blend it on “dip” mode for about 20-30 seconds until your desired consistency.
3. Next, you’ll want to season your tri tip with SPG, S&P or whatever seasoning, and let it dry brine in the fridge for a while (if time allows) – after this step, you’ll want to set it out on the counter to
get to room temp for 30 minutes to an hour before you start cooking.
4. Power up the first cooker (oven, grill, smoker, etc.) I always use a pellet smoker for the first step in a reverse sear set at 225 degrees.
5. Once the cooker is preheated, throw the tri tip in and flip it after 15-20 minutes. Time will vary here, and you definitely need a temperature probe to keep checking it. You’ll want to pull it off once it is an internal temperature of 105-110 degrees.
6. While it’s cooking in the low temp stage, you’ll want to prepare another grill for high heat (you can also use the same device and just let the tri tip rest while the grill gets up to a proper searing temperature).
7. Once the tri tip is temping at about 105 degrees and you’ve got a roaring fire over the charcoal, toss it directly over the coals to get a good sear on it. If your grill is hot enough, it should only take about 4-7 minutes of searing to get up to the perfect medium rare temperature (130-135 degrees).
8. I like to flip it every 30-45 seconds and rotate it around throughout the cook so it gets a nice, even char all over.
9. Once you get to your desired internal temp here, it’s time to let it rest! You’ll want to let a large piece of meat like this rest for about 10 minutes.
10. Slice against the grain, pour some of that homemade chimichurri sauce all over the top and enjoy!
Pro Tip: The grain on a tri tip typically goes in two different directions, so keep a close eye on the direction you are slicing it at the end to get the most tender bites possible! You can always defer to YouTube if you’re struggling to figure out where the grain is.

Simple Ways to Stay Organized at Home

I have always loved being organized and reducing clutter in my life. I find that when I stay organized, I feel less overwhelmed and anxious during the day. I do not have to wonder where my things are or spend time looking for my belongings. Also, I find that staying organized creates a sense of accomplishment or productivity. A lot of times, when people talk about being organized, I immediately think about being organized in school or at work. However, I think it is equally important to be organized in your everyday life, too. This creates a more comfortable living environment at home and increases peace of mind. Below, I share a few tips that have helped me stay organized in my everyday life.
USE A DAILY PLANNER
Using a planner is one of my favorite (and easy) ways to stay organized. Every Sunday, I plan out my week in my planner and write out every task, appointment, deadline, etc. that I have to do during that week. Then, I can go back and check off the tasks that I wrote down. Additionally, a planner is a great place to write important dates such as birthdays for people in your family, what meals to fix for dinner on a particular night, etc. Being able to write down all that I have planned for the week makes me feel more prepared and confident for the upcoming week. Even on the weekends, you can write down what you want to get done on a Saturday, such as going to get an iced coffee, going for a walk, calling your friend on the phone and doing laundry. Getting a weekly planner is an amazing way to simply and easily stay organized.
PRIORITIZE CLEANING
A lot of times, it is easy for me to not clean my bedroom or bathroom often enough because I simply do not want to clean. However, when I clean these rooms, I instantly feel better and more productive. There is something nice about going to bed in a dusted and vacuumed room. I have found that cleaning has helped me stay organized because I will often declutter my room as I am cleaning it. While I am dusting my dresser, I will pause and go through my clothes to create a bag with items to donate. Sometimes I will even rearrange the clothes in my dresser drawers. The importance of regularly cleaning is that you will feel productive, and you can conveniently organize your room as you clean.
FIND A “HOME” FOR YOUR STUFF
To stay organized, it is important to find a particular “home” for your things. Instead of putting items in random places throughout your home, you can decide on a specific place to keep those items. For instance, I keep all of my books to read in a basket in my bedroom, and I keep all of my bathroom towels on a small rolling cart outside of my bathroom. It is convenient to keep specific items in a particular place because you can always place those items in the same spot versus having to find a new spot. I also feel better when I look around my bedroom and see my stuff organized rather than having everything spread out all over my room. I enjoy using baskets and rolling carts to help keep the organization consistent throughout my bedroom. It may take time to figure out where you want your belongings to be, but part of the fun is getting to decorate your space while also organizing it.

Here are some tips:

That feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach Sunday evening when you realize you have to go back to work the next day. This may be an indication that you are working in a toxic work culture. I even had a job where I felt like I was going to throw up every time I pulled into the parking lot!
1. Make friends. They can help provide a support system.
2. Seek opportunities to learn and grow. This will create more positive energy and perhaps prepare you for your next job!
WHAT IS A TOXIC CULTURE?
3. Practice reframing. When faced with a negative interaction or situation, try to see it as a learning opportunity.
4. Create a more positive workspace by reducing clutter and personalizing your area. Clutter can be stressful, and you don’t need more stress when you are in a difficult work environment.
A toxic culture is plagued by fighting, drama, politics and unhappy employees to the point that productivity and employee well being are affected. We spend approximately 1/3 of our lives at work, so that is no way to live!
Below are some common characteristics:
1. Bullying and intimidation occur frequently.
2. Coworkers frequently gang up on each other.
3. Bosses or coworkers frequently take credit for others’ work.
4. Employees are insubordinate.
5. Office gossip and false accusations run rampant.
6. The boss is ineffective or absent.
7. Everyone operates under different rules.
8. The environment is highly political.
5. Use healthy coping techniques like exercise, meditation and reading to create boundaries between yourself and the work environment.
6. Create an exit strategy. Update your resume and establish a plan of exit if the work environment becomes too stressful.
7. Pray!
9. Supervisors don’t communicate expectations well or at all.
10. There seems to be dark, fearful energy that flows through the workplace.
Keep in mind that what is a toxic work culture for some may not be for others, but there are some common characteristics of what most people would see as toxic. I don’t think most of us enjoy the characteristics listed above.
Working in a toxic work environment can be stressful and negatively impact your mental health. But, you can be a light in a dark workplace and impact it positively by maintaining a positive attitude and supporting others. If you determine that you need to exit the organization, you will have developed resilience and learned what to look for in your next opportunity.

SPAGHETTI WITH CRUSHED CHERRY TOMATOES
This is not your usual spaghetti and red sauce. It’s made with three pints of fresh cherry tomatoes (choose a variety of colors for vibrancy), fresh ricotta cheese and plenty of grated Parmesan cheese. Cook spaghetti until al dente. Roast cherry tomatoes and crush, mix in ricotta for a delightful summer pasta meal that will please any crowd.
RICE SALAD WITH TOMATOES, CUCUMBERS AND FETA

HEIRLOOM TOMATO SALAD
Ingredients:
1/4 cup olive oil
2 T Champagne vinegar
1 T pure honey or agave
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 pint assorted-colored cherry or grape tomatoes, halved
2 T finely chopped fresh chives, plus more for serving
1 pound heirloom tomatoes, some sliced and some cut into wedges
Small basil leaves, for serving
Directions:
1. Whisk together oil, vinegar and honey in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add cherry tomatoes and chives; toss to combine.
2. Arrange heirloom tomatoes on a plate. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon cherry tomato mixture on top. Garnish with basil and additional chives.
SUMMER SQUASH WITH SCALLIONS, CHILE AND PARSLEY
This room-temperature side dish is made with raw, thinly sliced yellow squash and zucchini tossed with scallions, parsley, vinegar and chilies. It pairs perfectly with steak or chicken right off the grill.
Ingredients:
2 pounds mixed zucchini and summer squash, unpeeled and very thinly sliced into rounds (about 6 cups packed)
1 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves and tender stems
4 scallions, sliced (½ cup)
3 T red wine vinegar
1 serrano chili, seeded and thinly sliced
2 tsp. kosher salt, divided ½ cup roasted salted almonds, roughly chopped ¼ cup olive oil
½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
Toss together squash, parsley, scallions, vinegar, chile and 1½ tsp. of the salt in a large bowl. (Salad may be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to one day.)
Stir together almonds, oil, black pepper and remaining ½ tsp. salt in a bowl. Add to squash mixture; toss to combine. Serve at room temperature.

We all want to be great. Most of us want to be remembered for doing something impactful that changed lives before leaving Earth. The hard part is knowing if we’re becoming great through God’s or society’s approval. It’s important to dissect the Word and glean characteristics from those we consider spiritually great. Despite their many sins and mistakes, with the exclusion of Jesus, multiple people have done great things. Greatness doesn’t mean you will be known to the masses, but you will impact those connected to your earthly life and your greatness will travel with you to the next life. Let’s explore some biblical ideologies of being great.
SERVED VS. SERVICE
Society pictures great people as those with power who have others working under them and serving them results that can be attached to their names. Indeed, God wants us to work together, but in a way that fulfills a collective need. The collective need can be internally within the structure of an organization and externally for the people organizations are called to help. Matthew 23:11 says, “The greatest among you will be your servant.”
So, if we want to be great, we serve instead of being served. Whether our name is exalted is irrelevant, but I will share that Matthew 23:12 says, “...those who humble themselves will be exalted.” God loves to reward us when our heart is pure! Service keeps us aware of others’ needs and stops us from focusing only on ourselves.
Start by studying Jesus in Matthew or Moses in Genesis. Their names are great because of all they did to serve God’s people. Your name will be great if you have the attitude of servanthood, and this posture will build trust and respect in all environments you step into.
DEMOTE YOUR POSITION
Greatness is not in a position or title. True greatness is found in humility and the willingness to lower ourselves to lift others up. As Paul writes in Philippians 2:3, we should, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.” We may be able to trick humans into believing we are selfless, but we cannot

trick God who knows our heart. If we discover selfishness in our hearts, we can pray for God to drive it out of us because He is patient and doesn’t condemn us for our sins.
A boss who still asks for employee feedback demonstrates humility and awareness that he or she is simply a function of what keeps the business going, just like everyone else.
We should humble ourselves to devalue positions and titles and value the opinions of our helpers and customers.
GOD APPOINTS AUTHORITY
Greatness and leadership come from divine appointment, not human ambition. A pattern with characters in the Bible is their desire to gain what God has already promised to them or someone else. In the end, the outcome
doesn’t change, and these characters find they’ve wasted time and created trauma in their life story. Read Romans 13:1-5 as part of it says, “The authorities that exist have been established by God.”
Understanding that God grants us authority and greatness keeps us humble and dependent on His guidance. This encourages us to lead with integrity and appoint the right people to the proper roles in our businesses and organizations.
We become effective stewards of His blessings when we acknowledge all we have is God-given. Becoming great involves a shift in perspective that will change our lives for eternity, so let’s strive to serve others with love (1 Corinthians 13:13) and show the world what true greatness is. I have faith in you.

Hearing occasional horror stories on the news about sinking cruise ships and passengers stranded at sea for days without power and eating onion sandwiches can scare anyone away from taking their family on a cruise vacation. With countless cruises departing daily with numerous routes to choose from, there is rarely any need to be fearful. Weighing the pros and cons of nautical travel can help determine whether to book your cruise today or skip the ship altogether.
WHO ARE CRUISES RIGHT FOR?
Depending on the cruise line and route, cruise ship demographics can vary drastically. For example, a Disney Cruise is more likely to be noisy and overrun with families and small children. However, a Viking River Cruise through the Fjords of Norway is commonly crawling with retirees and couples seeking an upscale scenic experience with a smaller crowd.
Honeymooners, spring breakers and solo travelers can find plenty to do on board and on land with cruise ship amenities such as comedy shows, karaoke and nightclubs, in addition to signing up for on-shore excursions. One of the biggest draws to cruise travel is the bang for your buck. As an affordable, all-inclusive option, having meals and lodging roped into one manageable bill makes travel less of a headache for those looking to relax.
Want to dip your toes into taking a trip out of the country? Cruising is a great way to get a taste of international travel yet still feel safe the entire time. Ports of call are tourist friendly, offer organized tours through historical sites, private beach experiences and more. As long as you make it back to the ship on time (preferably with room to spare), stepping foot into another country while on a cruise can be a piece of cake.
Most cruise lovers rave about the abundant, tasty options awaiting their bellies at the ship’s buffet. With alcoholic beverage packages available for purchase on most cruises, relaxation and entertainment without the need for a designated driver also make cruising appealing for travelers who value sipping a margarita in the tropics over thrillseeking vacations.
WHEN TO RETHINK CRUISING
Prone to seasickness? Claustrophobic? Hate crowds? Perhaps taking a cruise isn’t for you. When seas are rough, motion sickness may interfere with your ability to fully unwind and enjoy the experience. Feeling cooped up in a ship (although a very large one) isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and seeing the same
hordes of people day after day may be grating to those craving solitude or novelty.
Unless you are prepared to pay a pretty penny, don’t expect much from your cruise ship accommodations. Because cruise lines expect their passengers to spend most of their time elsewhere on the ship, extravagant sleeping quarters and bathrooms are not their top priority. Even a window or outdoor seating space can raise your cruise cost significantly, so those seeking a top-notch hotel experience onboard most standard cruises will likely be dissatisfied.
Looking for authenticity while visiting new places? A cruise may not be the right choice for you. With only a few hours available to explore a port of call, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to see the realities of the countries you’re visiting. Multi-course dinners and formal nights onboard are excellent options for most travelers, although some find the food mediocre or lackluster, depending on personal preference. If you’re hoping to get a taste of local cuisine or take a trip off the beaten path, you might feel slightly underwhelmed at the dining and exploration options available during your vacation at sea.
On a bad day full of car problems, job issues, a relationship that had soured and financial issues, I spent the entire evening thinking about all the things I did not have. Feeling overwhelmed, I sat down at my computer and Googled “contentment: how to get it.” Unexpectedly, a quote from a Jewish theological text appeared: “Who is rich? One who rejoices in what he has.” At that moment, tears welled up in my eyes because I suddenly realized that I had always focused on all the things that were missing in my life, all the failed attempts and dreams which had not worked out. Reading this sentence was nothing less than an epiphany which became life changing in its implications. It seemed unbelievable that I could actually choose to be happy with the circumstances of my existence, be satisfied with what I had and who I was and thereby attain an inner peace and confidence derived from simply making myself the master of my fate.
For the next several months, I read the literature of positivity psychology. I needed a lot of help to reframe a constitutionally negative mindset; one which, since childhood, had been instilled in me by my dysfunctional family. Hypercritical parents had constantly told me that nothing I did was ever good enough (not even my appearance) and the cutting remark that the well regarded university I had gotten into “still wasn’t Harvard or Yale or another Ivy League.” What really clinched the change-yourself-mindset was when, while reading a biography of Benjamin Franklin, I came across his words “Who is rich? He that is content” – virtually the same words I had encountered earlier on the internet, hitting me again with a strong psychological whammy.

lead you to happiness, satisfaction and a sense of purpose. It is never too late to make that change. Following are a number of strategies, gleaned from my reading of positivity psychology texts that helped me learn how to change my destiny and be content in life.
1) BE GRATEFUL FOR THINGS LARGE
AND SMALL – the beauty of nature, a young child’s hug, the song of a cardinal, an unexpected gift or compliment, a small goal attained or a story you wrote getting published. Sharing those happy experiences with others amplifies the positive emotions such that you are twice blessed. As country western singer Willie Nelson said: “As soon as I started counting my blessings, my life turned around.” Mine did, too.
2) LOVE YOURSELF AND BELIEVE YOU HAVE A PURPOSE – AS WE ALL DO.
The old axiom “to thine own self be true” should be written large in the temple of your imagination where it should reign supreme. It took me decades to have faith to pursue the path of being a writer because I listened to all the people who said that was a foolish notion. I didn’t listen to the wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt’s statement to “never give anyone the power to diminish you” –until finally I did.
3) KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES
CLOSE. Having a good support system means everything in the world – one which can help you problem solve, manage stress and improve your self esteem.
4) LIMIT COMPARISONS. There will always be someone richer or poorer, luckier or better looking. Look in the mirror and say that mantra everyday: “You’re amazing. There is no one like you in the world” and mean it. It took me years to forget a boyfriend’s hurtful comment that I’d be “prettier if I got my nose done.” I had the good sense to leave that relationship quickly and to make peace with the nose that God gave me which works well enough and which I now see as somewhat exotic.
5) TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH and consider enrolling in meditation and/or yoga classes to keep your stress low and your mood positive. Spend time in nature which will nurture your heart and soul.
6) LET GO OF THE PAST. Forgive yourself for previous mistakes and focus on the good that will come your way if you envision it.
7) COMMIT ACTS OF KINDNESS – REGULARLY. Take the focus off of yourself and help others. A friend’s father on his deathbed told her “share, share everything.” It changed her life, and hearing that changed mine.
I drive an old car, have endless bills and plenty of worries. I also know that what I DO have – the love of friends and family, a great son, a (mostly) good dog, a job, a roof over my head, food in the fridge and religious faith is enough.

In 2022, Triad Cultural Arts and Heritage 365 initiated a scholarship pageant to honor Juneteenth. This evolved into the Queen Juneteenth Project, aiming to empower young women of color through positive identity, leadership, community service, sisterhood, scholarship, and arts & culture.
On June 14th, the 3rd annual Queen Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant took place at Paisley Middle School, with fifteen contestants. The winners were:

A Q&A WITH 2024 QUEEN JUNETEENTH – ALIYAH:
1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO RECEIVE THIS CROWN AND TITLE?
I am truly honored, and it means the world to me. I am so blessed to be given this title, and it is not something I take lightly. I truly appreciate being given the opportunity to represent a significant holiday such as Juneteenth.
2. WAS THE ALIYAH THAT SIGNED UP FOR THIS EXPERIENCE THE SAME ALIYAH THAT WAS CROWNED ON THE STAGE? IF DIFFERENT, HOW SO?
Absolutely not. This experience has opened my eyes and broadened my horizons to things I would have never considered before. It has helped me to mature and step out of my comfort zone and has allowed me to meet new people I may have never encountered if it wasn’t for this program. Now I am much more confident in myself and more prepared for future endeavors.
3. THE QJ EXPERIENCE IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SIMILAR PROJECTS. CAN YOU SHARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS THAT YOU THINK MADE THE QJ PAGEANT DIFFERENT?
I believe that the workshop facilitators and the Queens Council truly made it special. Almost every facilitator for each workshop was a black woman. They were all positive and successful and truly had a passion for what they were sharing with us. Queen
Juneteenth is not just focused on the pageant and about looking pretty or walking a certain way, it also is a truly amazing program that has a priority to shape and educate young women.
4. SOMEWHERE IN THE AUDIENCE THAT NIGHT WAS A LITTLE GIRL WHO WATCHED YOU DRESS AND SPEAK AND MUCH MORE. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THAT LITTLE GIRL NOW?
I would tell her to stay true to herself. When you are your genuine self, everything else will fall into place.
5. YOU SHARED A QUOTE WITH THE AUDIENCE THAT NIGHT. WHAT WAS IT, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
My quote was “love the life you live.” I chose this quote because I believe that the secret to life is to love your own, appreciate all of your blessings and not compare your life to someone else’s. Comparison is the thief of joy, and true happiness comes from loving your own life no matter the situation.
6. FAVORITE WORKSHOP? ACTIVITY?
My favorite workshop was the local black history workshop, and my favorite activity was the walking black history tour.
7. DID YOU HAVE ANY “AHA” MOMENTS?
I had an “aha” moment at the Financial Freedom workshop because it was when I realized that this program was more about preparing us for college and for life than just about wearing a crown and sash.
8. WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR JOURNEY?
Next stop is senior year! I am very excited to finish high school at Mount Tabor and to enjoy all of the senior activities.
9. WHY DO YOU THINK JUNETEENTH IS IMPORTANT?
I think Juneteenth is important because it reminds us of how far we have come as a community. It is also a great opportunity to educate about African American history and to facilitate more growth and unity within our community.
10. HOW DO YOU SEE THE QJ PAGEANT EXPERIENCE AND THE MEANING OF JUNETEENTH CONNECTED?
I think this pageant is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you cannot put a price on, and I am so grateful to have been able to be a part of it. I think Juneteenth connected means that all African Americans are connected through the shared history of Juneteenth and also African American culture.

Winston-Salem has no shortage of unique variations of the popular southern dish, shrimp and grits. If you love southern cooking, then you likely adore this dish. While many people think about New Orleans, Louisiana when they think of shrimp and grits, it’s suspected that it originated in Charleston, South Carolina. The very first documented recipe of it appeared in the Charleston Receipts cookbook in 1950. It quickly became a popular dish throughout the state and, in 1976, shrimp and grits was declared the official state food.
From the first time it was recorded as a breakfast dish in the recipe book, it has spread in popularity throughout the south at all times of the day.
In Forsyth County, it is a staple dish in so many restaurants, and each recipe is unique. Below are some of the amazing shrimp and grits available in Forsyth County.
6TH & VINE RESTAURANT AND WINE BAR
Shrimp and grits is so popular at 6th & Vine Restaurant and Wine Bar that it is on all their menus. Their variation of this dish is New Orleans-inspired. Their dish features 21/25 American shrimp, stone-ground grits, imported from Nola andouille sausage, trinity, house made spice blend and a white wine sauce.

FIREBIRDS WOOD FIRED GRILL
At Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, you’ll find 10 jumbo shrimp with andouille sausage in a creole sauce (made from the Cajun trinity: onions, celery and peppers), tossed with tomatoes with fresh rosemary, thyme and sage, garlic and Firebirds’ chile rub, all served over creamy, stone-ground, smoked cheddar grits. Their shrimp and grits is a top four seller at the restaurant.

Shrimp and grits is the #1 selling dish at Founders Restaurant and is on their brunch and dinner menus. Kelli Elliott, General Manager & Event Planner, shares that the recipe is a slight variation of her great grandmother’s recipe. She was first generation French and settled in Shreveport, Louisiana.

You’ll find a Carolina Shrimp ‘n Grits on the menu at Midtown Cafe and Dessertery. Their version of this dish includes creamy stone-ground grits, seasoned and grilled shrimp, crispy bacon, sharp white cheddar cheese and fresh green onions. This dish has been a favorite among patrons since it was added to the menu more than four years ago.

From opening to closing, shrimp and grits is on the menu at Mozelle’s every day. There has been some variation of the dish on the menu since they opened almost 17 years ago. The current variation has been on the menu for more than six years. It includes 17-month-aged Serrano ham and wild-caught American shrimp in a sherry cream sauce with tri-colored bell peppers and parmesan cheese all served over Anson Mills (SC) stone-ground grits that are fortified with homeland creamery milk and two-year aged white cheddar cheese from Tillamook dairy in Oregon.

ROOSTER’S: A NOBLE GRILLE
The shrimp and grits here date back to at least the early 2000s, back when the restaurant was called Noble’s Grille. It is made with North Carolina shrimp and includes bacon, corn, chorizo and tomatoes all served on Anson Mills (SC) stone-ground grits.

Excited about sending your child back to school this fall, but not too thrilled about the price of school supplies? Every year, both parents and teachers share mixed feelings about their budgets as a new school year commences. While parents and teachers want the best notebooks, pencils and backpacks for their little learners, splurging too much on colored pencils and crayons can break the bank for many families.
Students whose parents cannot afford to purchase the necessary school supplies each year can suffer negative psychological consequences, such as feelings of inadequacy and lack of motivation. Feeling embarrassed for not having a brand new backpack or the trendiest binders can make showing up to school feel like a daunting task. Fortunately, through Educator Warehouse, teachers can ensure that their students receive the tools they need in order to succeed.
To help WSFCS teachers foot the bill for their students’ supplies, the Educator Warehouse allows teachers to shop through thousands of donated and gently used school supplies.
The Forsyth Educator Partnership, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Council of PTAs and WS/FCS joined forces to create the Educator Warehouse facility, located behind Diggs-Latham Elementary School. Local businesses and individuals can donate supplies to help support Educator Warehouse and allow teachers to supply their classrooms for a fraction of the cost. Over the last year, Educator Warehouse has been grateful to receive an abundance of corporate in-kind donations, especially in the form of binders and hanging folders. Don’t have supplies on hand but want to donate anyway? Educator Warehouse also accepts monetary donations from anyone willing to lend a hand. Monetary donations allow the organization to allocate funds as needed to fill inventory gaps and distribute supplies evenly among educators.
In light of the new school year, regular Educator Warehouse hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Teachers are allowed one visit to the warehouse
per quarter and must sign up ahead of time online to shop on a specific day for a designated amount. Busy teachers can also take advantage of Educator Warehouse’s convenient online shopping option if they are unable to shop in person. To shop in person, visit Educator Warehouse on the Diggs-Latham Elementary School campus, located at 986 Hutton Street in Winston-Salem.
Interested in volunteering at the facility? Volunteers are crucial in keeping the operation running smoothly.
Educator Warehouse is grateful for volunteers, regardless of whether they are able to commit to shifts daily, weekly or monthly. Many volunteers at the warehouse find great joy and satisfaction in relieving teachers of their financial burdens, in addition to knowing that students will have all the supplies necessary to prepare them for a solid school year.

TRUST BEGINS WITH YOU
In a partnership, a friendship or a work team, trust develops when individuals consistently act in trustworthy ways.
In the words of author Marsha Sinetar, “Trust is not a matter of technique, but of character; we are trusted because of our way of being, not because of our polished exteriors or our expertly crafted communications.” She’s right, because trust is built on sincere intentions and sincere actions.
As you consider how you can speak and act in ways that build trust, notice how much the following actions are rooted in character:
START WITHIN: OWN YOUR FEELINGS

When you find that you feel strongly about something or that your buttons just got pushed, take an emotional time out. Identify and acknowledge what you are feeling, then pause to consider what, if anything, you will do. If you are really upset with the actions of a co-worker, instead of going on the offensive with “attack and blame,” consider cooling off, then approaching that person with an invitation to talk, explore and understand.
OWN YOUR MISTAKES

This may be hard for you if you are in the habit of thinking that making a mistake is a blanket reflection of your competence. It’s not; and only you see it that way. Instead of hiding, diminishing or pointing the finger elsewhere, learn to say, “my error.” That’s something your co-workers can respect. That’s something that builds trust.
TELL THE TRUTH

Honesty, openness and the sharing of information are your ticket to trust. A person who holds back or distorts information quickly earns a reputation as someone who can’t be trusted. Sharing workrelated information demonstrates that you are truly a team player.

BE WILLING TO SAY “I’M SORRY” AND “I APOLOGIZE”
When you use one of these pure and simple phrases, you not only take ownership; you demonstrate that you acknowledge and accept responsibility for the impact on the person or situation, as well.
INCORPORATE “I WANT TO UNDERSTAND”

One of the most effective ways to show a co-worker the kind of consideration and respect that builds trust is to be willing to explore where they are coming from and why. Remind yourself that they live in their little world of I and you live in yours. Open your mind and your heart, and be willing to see what things look like from “over there.”
BE WILLING TO SAY “I DON’T UNDERSTAND”

This phrase is a companion to “I want to understand.” It efficiently allows you to focus conversation on clarifying. Remember, as with empathy, you do not have to agree with how the other person sees things; you simply need to understand it if you want to build trust.
LOOK FOR MUTUAL GAIN

Expand your awareness to consistently consider what the other person needs, wants or what is important to him or her. Demonstrate that it’s not all about you by factoring in the other person as much as you do yourself.
KEEP YOUR WORD

Your word is your covenant. Do what you say you will. And, if you can’t, or if you don’t – for whatever reason – go back, own up, apologize and reset the expectation.
These behaviors may challenge your character; I know that a few have challenged mine over the course of my career. It’s worth working on them because, when you master them, you will build trust – or more trust – with your co-workers. You will experience a workplace where you feel “lighter,” less stressed and cautious, because you have mindfully cultivated trusting relationships. And, you will learn one invaluable lesson of a lifetime – that the very first person you can trust is yourself

“How Can I Stop Worrying About What Others Think?”

If you are anything like my BFF and me, you spend way too much time worrying about what others think of you and how you can change others’ opinions of you. I think it is just genetic for us to focus on how we are perceived or seen by our peers and even those we have little to no interaction with in life. But, are there specific steps you can take to be able to care less about what others think of you? I am so glad you asked!
TREATMENT OF YOU IS OFTEN A REFLECTION OF HOW OTHERS SEE THEMSELVES
You might have to read that title a couple of times to get it to settle in your mind. I have
spent years, even decades, worrying about what others think of me. I drove myself into therapy over a former family member who was determined to not like me and, dare I say, hate me. I went above and beyond to connect with this person, reached out to include them in my life, volunteered to do things to help with their life and nothing ever worked. I went to other family members and said, “What do I need to do that I haven’t done?” Unfortunately, no one saw it as an issue other than me, but when I had to be around this person, I was so anxious that it made me sick. After talking to a therapist, I realized that the way this person treated me was more about their own insecurities than it was about me. This person saw traits in
me that they didn’t have, so the only way to find peace was to not like me and go above and beyond in disliking me. It never really was about me, it was about their own inability to deal with their shortcomings.
STOP CHECKING SOCIAL MEDIA TO SEE WHO IS FOLLOWING YOU AND INTERESTED IN YOUR LIFE
We spend a lot of time on social media checking up on our acquaintances, what they are doing and if they are following what we are up to. I remember seeing that a Facebook friend had unfriended me, and I took it so personally. What had I done to warrant that move? I did some serious evaluation on the importance of peripheral people in my life and realized that I needed to spend more time on those people whom I know cared about me and who I deeply care about. I was placing far too much importance on people who really had no connection to my everyday life.
BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU GET YOUR ADVICE
A few years ago, I was known for getting far too many opinions on decisions I needed to make. I asked people whom I had very little in common with about their thoughts on specific topics. If we didn’t share a similar set of beliefs, then why would I ask them for their thoughts on a possible life changing decision? I had to remind myself to be more selective about whose input I valued and not to give attention to unsolicited advice from people who don’t have to carry the consequences of my decisions. I’m the only person responsible for my decisions and the fallout from those decisions.
STOP CORRECTING WHAT OTHERS THINK
I finally reached the age where I stopped correcting what everyone thought they knew of me from other sources and let people who wanted to know and understand me come directly to me. If you want to get to know what makes someone tick, go directly to them and not another source. People have agendas, and you can only get to know someone from them, no one else!
