Club News & Reminders

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,

I hope you are all enjoying the last few weeks of summer and that you are settling into your end of summer routines seamlessly. We hope that you plan to join us during our Labor Day Weekend festivities as we bid farewell to summer and look ahead to fall. The team and I cannot believe how fast this year is passing us by. We are already working on finalizing details for our 2023 holiday events and beginning discussions about our 2024 calendar of events.

Now a brief update on projects taking place. Our Better Billy Bunker contractors are making great progress on the completion of the remaining Championship Course bunkers. They are 45% complete with the project. We expect them to finish at the end of October. As a reminder, they will not be completing the greenside bunkers on Hole #17. Those bunkers will be redone during the pond to creek conversion this winter.

We are looking forward to finishing phase 2 of “The Creek Project”. As communicated previously, we will be repairing the remaining area of creek left on the Championship Course, which includes the pond to creek conversion. As a part of this project, Hole #17 will be played as a par 3 with a temporary green for the duration of the project. This project will begin at the end of November and is anticipated to be complete at the beginning of April 2024.

Once again, the second half of the main parking lot sealing and striping was delayed due to weather and previously scheduled events. We will be completing this repair on Tuesday, September 5th and Wednesday, September 6th, weather permitting. We are still working with our Driving Range net contractor to lock down a date for the new net to be installed. We are hopeful that the contractor can get their crews on site this month to complete this project.

And now onto some staff news. We recently celebrated the retirement of our legendary Swim Coach, Kevin Brennan (KB), after an impressive 45 years at the helm. KB, you’re a true legend and we thank you for your unwavering dedication to the Forest Hills Swim Program and for the impact you have had on generations of young swimmers. You will be missed!

But when one chapter ends, another begins. We are thrilled to welcome Keith Mugg as our new Head Swim Coach, who will dive into action next season. Keith, already acquainted with our Forest Hills Swim Team after a summer of collaboration with KB, promises an exciting future for our swimmers.

Now, let’s not say our goodbyes to pool side lounging just yet. We’re extending the Adult Pool season a week past Labor Day. With the limited staff available now that our seasonal staff has returned to school for the fall, the Cabana bar and Café will not be open during this time. If you would like to order food or drink, please call the main club line to place a to go order. If the weather looks good for the following week, we will keep the Adult Pool open two weeks post Labor Day.

Lastly, we are thrilled to announce that fall bocce has sold out with 225 players signed up. We are gearing up for a season of epic bocce battles. Get ready for some friendly competition and a whole lot of fun!

I hope to see you around the Club soon!

Manager’s Report by Emma Gore emmag@foresthillscc.net
Membership Update
by Ali Kaplan alik@foresthillscc.net

Fellow Club Members,

I’d like to share with you information about the recent Food and Beverage Survey. Your thoughtful and constructive input to surveys helps us to understand the areas, and ways, in which the Management Team can help assure that your member experience is the best that it can be. The Food and Beverage experience is a very important aspect of the overall FHCC experience. The Management Team, along with the Entertainment Committee and the Food and Beverage Task Force, have spent significant time evaluating and gaining an understanding of your input. The membership response to the survey was strong with 234 responses received. The full report, including all comments and suggestions, totaled 51 pages of small font reading.

When compared to last year’s survey, there was improvement in the rankings on most of the questions. Approximately two-thirds of responding members indicated year over year improvement in their Food and Beverage experience. The comments and suggestions received were positive in nature and much appreciated. Helping the staff to improve delivery time and consistency/quality of food dishes are key areas of focus.

Our review of the survey responses indicates that one of the most important areas of needed improvement is the time it takes from placing an order for lunch or dinner to the time the food is delivered to the table. The Management Team has already implemented a measurement tool which provides statistics on this timing for both lunch and dinner services. In July, approximately 95% of lunch orders were delivered in 25 minutes or less, and approximately 95% of dinner orders were delivered in 30 minutes or less. The goal of measuring this is to help our team know where improvements need to be made. For the orders that are not delivered within the desired time, the team can isolate those tickets and determine what happened to cause a delay. Knowing the cause of delays helps determine what can be done to eliminate the problems and improve future performance. We believe improvements to staff training along with review and implementation of updated standard procedures will help improve overall performance.

We have a very diverse population of members. This leads to similar diversity in expectations. A family with young children may have a much shorter desired delivery time than a couple who is out for the evening and desiring a leisurely dining experience. A member hosting a business lunch or having lunch prior to a tee time may be desirous of a quicker experience than a member who stops for lunch after golf or another activity at the Club. The team discussed one solution would be that members can let the staff know of any time constraints they have when being seated. You can also let the staff know when making a reservation if there are time constraints that will help us meet your expectations. It is also possible to pre order or be ready to order when being seated if you are in a hurry. The menus are always available online or in the FHCC app. If ordered in advance, your dinner can be ready for you within a few minutes of being seated. This option may be especially helpful for busy families.

The survey results also indicate that members who have been at the club three years or less, have a higher level of satisfaction with the Food and Beverage departments than those who’ve been here longer. Sometimes our memory of a prior poor experience may prevent us from seeing things with a fresh perspective. Over my nine years as a Club member, I’ve had mostly positive experiences, interspersed with a few poor experiences. My experiences in the past six months have been steadily improving, and I’m enjoying the Club more as a result. I urge those who, for whatever reason, haven’t dined with us recently to give us another chance. I hope you will be pleasantly surprised by the improvements that have already been implemented. We understand and acknowledge that our operation is not perfect. We are committed to making steady improvements so your expectations will be met consistently.

Based on the financial results from last year, the Board determined that we should form a Food and Beverage Task Force. The purpose of this group is to help us identify ways to improve both the member experience and financial performance in this area. Hopefully, you’ve seen the weekly Thursday night dining features such as Fried Chicken Night and Burger Night. A weekly Italian Night each Thursday has been planned for the month of September, along with a Fried Chicken Night on September 20th. The return of the Soup Club was recently announced. The soccer watch parties, and other weekly activities are helping to increase club usage. These initiatives and your participation in them are helping significantly in the financial results from the Food and Beverage Departments. Financial results for the first 4 months of this fiscal year are positive with the revenue and net income budgets being exceeded each month.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Upcoming Dining Events

As we complete our first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, this letter includes our financial operating results and updates on our capital enhancements.

The first quarter of our 2024 fiscal year ended with strong financial results. For the quarter ended June 30th, 2023, we generated income before capital of $302 which was $262 ahead of budget. Higher than budgeted revenues of $92 in golf operations and $105 in food/beverage, without significant increased costs, drove most of this additional income. With nice weather and a continued full membership, our golf operations saw increases in the number of golf rounds during April through June and a record number of rounds during the month of May. As a result, cart revenue and guest fee revenue were higher than budgeted.

Our culinary team saw increased revenues while the payroll costs were less than budgeted. Chef Michael joined us and was focused on building his team while keeping food costs in line.

Our Dues Income was in line with budget as we maintain a full golf and social membership.

Our balance sheet remains strong at June 30th, 2023. The decline in current assets resulted from the collection of the assessment receivable of $876 at June 30th, 2022, together with the spending of cash to execute capital enhancements, primarily the Creek Project, Better Billy Bunkers, and Bocce Ball Courts. All of this activity was planned and the resulting changes were expected.

Capital Enhancements

We will wrap up the Creek Project this fiscal year with work on the Hole #17 pond and spillway along with completion of the remaining Better Billy Bunkers on the Championship Course. Primary funding for these projects came from the management of costs throughout the Creek Project and savings realized. Work is scheduled to begin on both projects in the late summer/ early fall.

Our annual capital budget, separate from the Creek Project funds, is being directed toward our new fleet of golf carts, that recently went into service, along with much needed grounds equipment. Roof repairs to the Clubhouse were recently completed along with updates to the driving range turf. Our driving range safety netting material has been received. We are awaiting the contractor for installation which we hope will be in the next couple of months.

We are planning to install Clubhouse sprinkler system updates along with certain kitchen equipment and IT systems during this fiscal year. Capital spending through June 30th, 2023 remains in line with budget for both the Creek Project and our annual capital costs.

Thank you for your continued support of our Club.

Treasurer's Letter – First Quarter Fiscal Year 2024 by Laurie L. Hopkins

If we have had a chance to meet, you know how much I love weddings! We had two wonderful ones at the Club recently, both of which are Club members.

Amy & David 7/29/23

I loved going through the planning process with Mrs. Moffit to create a memorable day for Amy & David. We had so much fun coming up with the best floor plan, picking the best linens, creating beautiful centerpieces, selecting the most delicious menu, designing stationary, creating a seating chart, and building a perfect timeline!

I was so happy Amy took my recommendation and did a first look with David. It was my favorite moment of the day! We then took some beautiful pictures around the Club before we began their intimate ceremony, followed by a beautiful reception filled with warm candlelight, and family. I cannot think of anything that could have made their special day more perfect!

Abby & Tim 8/12/23

I didn’t go through the planning process as much for Abby and Tim, but I didn’t need to with a bride like Abby! She was so organized and had a vision of what she wanted her wedding day to be like. It was such a delight working with the Schueppert family in the short time I was able to.

It’s all in the details! From the beautiful flowers to the draping behind the head table, the perfectly matching stationary, gold chargers, satin wine napkins, candles, potted plants for the outdoor tables, advice box. Nothing was missed and everything looked so elegant!

We started the reception with a Star Wars themed entrance from the bridal party, followed by beautiful toast, then we ate a delicious meal of Salmon, Chicken Marsala, Lasagna, Mac and Cheese, Italian Salad, and Caesar Salad. Every table raved about the food especially, the Mac and Cheese! (Great job Culinary Team!) We cut the cake and started with the first dance. Tim danced with his mother to a song she sang to him since he was a baby, and then we had a 6-minute PERFORMANCE from Mr. Schueppert and Abby which was probably the best father/daughter dance I’ve ever seen! This got everyone on the dance floor and the rest is history.

It makes me so happy to look at a room full of people that are happy, fed, and celebrating a new marriage. Both couples were a match made in heaven! Thank you both for trusting Forest Hills to host such an important day in your lives!

If you or someone you know just got engaged, send them our way.

Banter About The Course

Lost balls can really hurt pace of play. When the leaves fall, this becomes more difficult. Please be mindful of the amount of time spent looking for a ball. If the ball cannot be found in a reasonable time frame, take a one stroke penalty. According to the rules of golf, you have three minutes to look for your ball. This time starts when you reach the area that the golf ball is likely to be, and you begin searching.

September is typically some of the best weather of the year. Take advantage of this and get out to play a few extra rounds. With the golf course being in great shape, there is no better place to be this fall.

The new golf carts continue to receive great feedback. Not only due to the upgraded quality, but the GPS screen has also been a fantastic addition. The pace of play has improved due to notices given on the cart screen indicating a group’s position. The ability to dictate where carts can and cannot drive has benefited the golf course as well. One reminder in regard to the GPS screen: the pin location is not exact and is only set within the quadrant for that day. We hope to receive an integrated GPS device in the coming months that our grounds staff will use to set the exact location. It is currently in the final stages of testing for production.

The grass range tee is looking excellent and will continue to look this way with the assistance of all players who use it. Turf recovery is crucial, and recovery is superior when a linear divot pattern is applied, keeping 4 or 5 inches of turf between the divot lines created. Scattering divots or creating one large, concentrated divot area takes much longer for the turf to recover. Let’s have everyone do their part in keeping the driving range in good condition.

As a reminder, don’t forget to check how much credit you have in the books. There is nearly $20,000 of credit outstanding that expires at year end. New shipments of apparel from Peter Millar, Holderness & Bourne, and Johnnie-O continue to arrive for the fall season. There is a wide selection of new products right now, so make it a point to come by the Golf Shop.

We look forward to a great fall season and hope to see everyone often in September!

Anyone who is a part of the Forest Hills community knows how beautiful the flowers and plants are around the Clubhouse and along the Course. But did you know who was behind all of that?

The horticulture team at Forest Hills is made up of the Horticulturalist, Karen Viola and her assistant, Joyce Heeb. They have an additional full-time team member in the busy season months.

They maintain 86 flower beds on club property. Every morning, they detail blow the front entrance of the Club, Circle Drive, all the brick pavers along the back of the Clubhouse, everything around the Golf Shop to the Bag Drop, the drink stations on Holes #5 and #16, Dutch’s Hut, and the Valley drink station. They also water plants in all the big pots around the Clubhouse, Pickleball Courts, Tennis Chalet, Cabana, Eagles View, and the Ballroom Veranda. Then, after this, they start taking care of the landscape beds on the course. Karen and Joyce also manage the holiday decorating throughout the Clubhouse. They decorate every single room of the Club and all of the Christmas trees.

How long have you worked at Forest Hills?

Karen: I started in March of 2000, so twenty-three years now.

Joyce: Seven and a half years.

What other experience do you have/how did you get into this position?

Karen: This is a third career for me! I worked in retail up until my daughter was born. After I had her, I didn’t want to go back to retail. I got a horticulture degree from Meramec and started working in horticulture in 1998.

Joyce: I received my bachelor’s in agriculture. I worked for over 35 years in interior plant maintenance, working with plants in offices, malls, and private residences. I met Karen and made the switch to come out here!

What does a typical shift look like for you?

Karen: We start at 5:30 am, and begin with cleanup. We clean up trash, leaves, and other things around the property for about an hour and a half. Joyce then waters the plants and flowers for about two to three hours. We check the plants and flower beds for damage and necessary maintenance.

How does your work vary throughout the year?

Karen: Late summer is mostly maintenance, but after Men’s Member Guest, the fall flowers are ready to be planted. We also plant tulip bulbs in the fall. We create the autumn display around the entrance and Circle Drive in early fall, and in the winter, we decorate the clubhouse with a tree in practically every room. In the spring, we clean up all the flower and plant beds, and replenish the perennials. In May, we plant the annuals. We have about a three season flip that we do here around the Club.

What is a fun fact about horticulture on the Club property that members may not know?

Karen: We get a lot of questions about how we deter the deer from eating all the flowers and plants around the property, especially because members see how many deer are in the area. We try to get ahead and choose plants that deer don’t like or won’t eat.

Joyce: People would be surprised to learn that deer establish eating patterns. If we spray deer repellent early, and choose plants they don’t like, they won’t return and try to eat our plants later in the season.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Karen: We love being outside all day. It’s hard in the heat and freezing temperatures, but for the most part, we get to work with the weather.

Joyce: You couldn’t ask to work at a more beautiful place. The members are always friendly, and very complimentary.

What is your favorite flower/plant?

Karen: Salvias- so many birds, bees, and butterflies love them.

Joyce: Begonias and Lantanas. They’re tried and true!

Any advice for someone who would like to start or level up their gardening?

Karen: Do your own research on plants. The staff at bigger box garden sections may not know as much as someone at a more specialized nursery. Google is an underrated tool.

Joyce: Interior plants are trending right now, so many of the products in the industry (soil, pots) are tailored to that. Indoor gardening is a great place to start!

Removal of Bermuda Grass from Bentgrass Collars and Greens Surfaces

The process of eradicating Bermuda grass from our bentgrass greens and surrounds is going well. We were able to take advantage of the temperature being 88 degrees on August 21st, so we applied the second application of product to continue weakening the Bermuda grass. We expect to see the white bleaching effect after each application. We will make another application within the next few weeks.

Driving Range Tee Update

We have been mowing the driving range tee nearly everyday as we get the turf adjusted to lower cutting heights. In between mowing days, we have been applying sand topdressing to help smooth out imperfections and protect the “crown” which is the heart of the plant. The tee continues to look better with each mowing and topdressing. The new sod was installed at a height of .750. We sanded aggressively until we could complete our first mowing on it at the height of .650. After multiple topdressings and mowings, we then lowered the height of cut to .600. Implementing the same procedures will allow us to lower the height of cut to .550. We will continue this same process over and over until we reach our desired height of cut of .450. (Picture #1)

We would like to thank all Members who are working hard to take divots in the linear fashion we have requested. The divots fill in much faster using this method. If you haven’t yet seen the video of Jimmy and Carter demonstrating the proper way to take divots, it was very beneficial. (Scan the QR Code below to view the video.) The linear method is much better than scattered or clustered. Here is a picture of the sign showing how we would like to see the divots be taken along with an example of the Membership practicing this method. (Pictures #2 & #3)

The Grounds Maintenance team has not forgotten we still have work to do around the old target bunkers (All the areas out on the range with white covers). The heat is too much this week for cool season grasses to be sodded. We assure you we will be getting back to this as soon as possible. We are anticipating having cooler temperatures next week.
