In Loving Memory

It is with deep regret that we inform the membership of the passing of one of our members, Guy Elmer Miller, Jr., who passed away on June 3rd. The Millers were longtime members of the Club.
“Guy was proud to have earned the rank of Eagle Scout of BSA Troop 17 and serving his country for four years in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Washington University in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in business and was hired by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. His career spanned 33 years in various increasingly important roles leading up to Senior Vice President, Human Resources. He was a member of several business organizations and boards, including the Employee Benefit Research Institute in Washington, D.C. where he made recommendations to the U.S. Congress. He was active in his Church serving as an Elder and President of the Congregation. As a member of Forest Hills Country Club, Guy was an avid golfer, playing many famous courses and golf events with his wife, Delores. He was gifted in woodworking, enjoyed traveling, skiing, and spending time with his family.” He will be greatly missed.
June Employee of the Month
Please join us in recognizing our June Employee of the Month, Soren Smith!
“Soren is in his third year of lifeguarding at Forest Hills. Soren is a team player and emulates the motto of making all the member experiences positive and personal. He is going to be a sophomore at Maryville University and loves to come in and learn the members names and who they are. Soren has always strived to make it a personal experience for not only every member, but those that he encounters as employees as well. Thank you Soren for always striving to bring the best to Forest Hills!”
Recognition from our members means the world to us. Please continue to share instances of exceptional employee dedication with Emma Gore at EmmaG@foresthillscc.net or Abby Le, Director of Human Resources, at AbbyL@foresthillscc.net.

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,
As summer unfolds, we at Forest Hills Country Club are delighted to see you and your families enjoying the sunshine and our beautiful facilities. Here's a look at some exciting news and upcoming events.
Get ready for a fantastic Fourth of July Celebration & Carnival planned for the whole family! Our dedicated team is putting the finishing touches on an unforgettable day that kicks off with the Forest Club Estates Parade. Following the parade, a delicious lunch buffet will be served on the Lower Patio. Afternoon fun includes pool games and a DJ, culminating with two dinner buffet options, a carnival and a dazzling firework display to cap off the evening. We typically experience high levels of parking lot traffic throughout the day. Please be sure to park on the street across from the Clubhouse should both parking lots be full. Do not park out of unmarked spaces in either parking lot.
As we continue to host many activities at the Club, we kindly ask that you make reservations for a la carte dining whenever possible, even if the reservation is made the day of or just a few hours beforehand. This helps us to ensure a smooth and enjoyable a la carte dining experience for everyone by allowing us to plan accordingly and provide the exceptional service you deserve.
Our Junior Sports programs are in full swing. Congratulations to our record-breaking Junior Tennis program! Session One wrapped up with an impressive 206 participants. We're looking forward to another stellar session this month. Coach Keith led our Swim & Dive Team to another undefeated season! We cheered them on as they headed to conference at the end of June and claimed our 15th consecutive Country Club League conference title. We placed 2nd in Country Club League Conference Diving and 2nd in West County Swim League Conference. We also extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our dedicated Junior Golf volunteers who contribute significantly to the program's success. We are looking forward to the end-of-season tournament in just a few weeks. Be sure to register for all junior sports end-of-season banquets taking place this month!
We are thrilled to welcome Katy Dingman as our new Director of Events. Katy comes to us from Charlotte Country Club in North Carolina and brings a wealth of experience. Please reach out to Katy if you have any event needs at Forest Hills Country Club. She can be reached at katyd@foresthillscc.net.
As a friendly reminder, we encourage you to review our Club Rules, including dress code and guest policies, to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for all members.
We are committed to enhancing your experience at Forest Hills while maintaining our facilities. Current improvement projects in the works include replacing the Valley Course irrigation controllers, upgrading high-usage tees with new sod, replacing the Ballroom carpet, and refreshing exterior doors. We are also actively collaborating with our Club Committees and the Board of Directors to prioritize future capital projects.
We look forward to seeing you around the Club and making this summer great one!
-Emma Gore, CCM, General Manager/COO

Membership Report

Fellow Club Members,
Our 18-Hole Ladies recently held their Member-Guest Tournament. A group of members (Tracy Coffman, Sara Gould, Joyce Jackson, Linda Trost, and Tina Vierling) began planning for this event last fall. The event included a practice round for our members and their guests, a short game competition with cocktails and appetizers, a putting contest, a luncheon and dinner, and 18 holes of fierce competition on the Championship Course. There were 68 participants for the event. Thank you to this group of members whose desire was to upgrade this event to a “signature event” that will be annually looked forward to by both members and their guests. From all reports, our staff did a fantastic job for the event, and a good time was had by all! Thank you, and I look forward to this event becoming an annual tradition for our Club.
With very high usage of Club facilities during summertime, our parking lots are often full. Our lots, particularly the main lot nearest the Clubhouse, have some design limitations that raise the importance of parking courteously in the provided spaces. Many of the center row spaces are clearly marked for “compact” vehicles. For those of you who drive to the Club in full-size SUVs (such as Suburbans) and in extended cab full-size pick-up trucks, your cooperation in not using these spaces will be greatly appreciated by your fellow Club members. Please consider parking these large vehicles only in the outer rows, or in the auxiliary lot across the street. This consideration of others will prevent the rear of your vehicle from blocking others from driving safely through the lot. This approach may help prevent property damage to your own vehicle. For everyone using our lots, please make sure you pull completely into the space being selected in the main lot (wheel against the curb in the outer rows, and the left front wheel on the center line in the inner rows). As you exit your vehicle, it’s a good idea to take a look to make sure your vehicle rear bumper does not extend beyond the end of the white line on the passenger side of the vehicle into the driving lane. Thank you for your assistance in keeping the driving lanes open.
Our Club Committees are beginning the process of reviewing the Board Policy Manual and Club Rules for which they are responsible. This is done on a regular basis to help assure that our policies, procedures and rules are up to date. Proposed changes, if any, will be reviewed by the Governance Committee, then by the Board. Once any changes are approved by the Board, the posted documents on the website will be updated. If you have any suggestions, please contact the appropriate Committee Chair.
Our Committees and Management Team are always working to prioritize how to best invest the resources that our Membership provides. There are several renewal/replacements needs that were identified following approval of our planned Capital Expenditures Budget. These items include renewal of the aged (25 years old) pumps and controller for the irrigation system and replacement of insulated boxes for the walk-in coolers in the basement. Renewal of existing resources is carefully planned for and budgeted. These identified needs will be addressed in a way that will minimize any potential impacts to the member experience and in a fiscally responsible manner. Some other items that we had originally planned to deal with this current fiscal year will be deferred to a future date.
As always, it is the desire of your Board of Directors to receive your feedback and input through regular communications. If you have comments, questions or concerns, please let us know so they may be addressed in a timely manner.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
- Charles Nance, Board Chair

General Update: Tees
We were able to open Hole #5 Red tee on Wednesday, June 26th, but Hole #6 Gold/Blue wasn’t quite ready. This tee will open on Tuesday, July 2nd. As soon as we laid the cool season Fescue around Hole #6 tee, the temperatures jumped up and the rain stopped falling. The new sod looked a bit brown but has slowly started greening back up.
The driving range tee, Tahoma 31, has been performing exceptionally. We have been seeing divots recover in just 7 days. This outstanding recovery time has us planning to install it on our two smallest tees. After July 4th, we will be converting Hole #4 and Hole #12 blue tees to Tahoma 31. We feel optimistic we will get the same divot recovery time as the range tee. Below is a picture of divot recovery in 7 days.

June 3rd June 10th

In late May, we aerified and brushed compost into the holes on all tees at Hole #16. If you were wondering what was causing the black look, it was the compost. This is to soften the tees, so inserting a golf tee into the ground is easier, as well as help with the growth of the turf by improving the soil composition.
Dry Turf
We went 16 days without rain in June, with temperatures frequently in the low to mid 90 degrees. At about the 10-day mark of no rain, the turf started showing signs of drying out. When turf starts getting droughty, it starts turning brown. We have had a lot of success over the years supplementing dry areas with additional irrigation water throughout the day. This process of supplementing water cools off the plant and keeps it from dying. These areas will green back up as we begin to receive more rainfall.
Our Focus Over the Next Two Weeks
Over the first two weeks of July, we will be focusing our attention on fixing low spots in fairways. The two golf holes we will focus on are Holes #7 and #8. Hole #7 has low spots all along the left edge of the second fairway. Hole #8 has multiple low spots on the left edge of the smaller fairway. Here is a picture of some low spots that hold water on Hole #7 fairway.
As always, we look forward to seeing you on the Golf Course and answering any questions you may have.

Welcome Katy Dingman, Director of Events!

Hi! My name is Katy Dingman and I am excited to join the FHCC team as your Director of Events!
I am originally from Orlando, Florida, but I have spent the past four years in Charlotte, North Carolina, after graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Global Club Management and Leadership. Go Noles! In Charlotte, I worked at Myers Park Country Club as a Food and Beverage Manager and Charlotte Country Club as an Event Planner.
I moved to St. Louis the first week of June and I’ve loved exploring my new city so far! In my free time, I love to try new restaurants and attend sporting events. (I already bought my first Cardinals jersey, don’t worry!) My favorite part of event planning is creating personal relationships with members and being creative with our teams to execute amazing Club events. I look forward to meeting you all and making your special events unforgettable!
If you have any upcoming events planned, or would like to host an event, please contact me with any questions you may have. My office number is (636) 207-3528 and my email is katyd@foresthillscc.net.

- Katy Dingman, Director of Events Senior Men’s Golf Association by John
I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer thus far. We have some beautiful new wine features this month to share with you. The first two come from Vina Robles in Pasa Robles, a family owned and operated winery that we are thrilled made its way to the Saint Louis market. First up, the Sauvignon Blanc 2022, $26/bottle, from their Jardine vineyard. This refreshing wine displays aromas of passion fruit, guava, and lemon with hints of citrus blossoms and has a juicy acidity, perfect for a relaxing evening on Eagles View.
The Arborist is a red blend composed of 46% Syrah, 23% Petite Syrah, 13% Grenache, and 9% Tannat. This wine ($28/bottle) scored 92 points and was rated one of the best quality-for-value bottles. Notes of plums, blackberries, and hints of hibiscus and blood orange flood the senses as oak spice and firm tannins linger on the palate. Our final wine is the Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, $24/glass. Layered notes of ripe blackberry, dark plum, and boysenberry are complemented by hints of dark chocolate, baking spices, and toasty oak. The rich, dark fruit is balanced by fresh acidity and finely-knit tannins.
- Victoria Zimmerman, Director of Food & Beverage
de Greck
There was plenty of Senior Golf in June and pretty good weather. On June 5th, the older Seniors beat the younger Seniors, 3.5 points to 1.5 points. Those cashing in were Ed Mayuga, Terry Gooding, Bill Robertson, Larry Thayer, Fred Salerno, Jim Moffit, John de Greck, Dave Ganz, and John Sherman
We had a nice spring day for our Regular Play on June 12th Tony Piazza was our winner, with Larry Giglio and Homer Sedighi finishing second and third.
Our Two-Man Match Play Championship got started on June 19th with our qualifying round. It was hot on the course. Headed for our opening match play event, Mike Young and Terry Schad will face Doc Schneider and Tony Piazza, Homer Sedighi and Scott Woley will battle Fred Salerno and Ed Mayuga, John Sherman and Bill Bennett will lose to John de Greck and Pat Hopkins, and Charles Nance and Stan Grossman will play Larry Thayer and Dave Ganz
Our leading money winner so far this season is Tom Dean who holds a $35 lead over Terry Schad
