Assistant Manager’s Report by Ryan Schaben

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,

I get the pleasure of announcing that Emma Gore, and her husband Ryan, welcomed a new addition to their family. Vivienne arrived in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 17th, at 6 lbs. 13 oz., and is a healthy and happy baby girl. This is their third daughter, and both Emma and Vivienne are doing well. Please join me in congratulating Emma and Ryan on their family of five!

This is also the reason that I am writing your Manager’s Report this month. During Emma’s maternity leave, I will be stepping in to cover the responsibilities of GM/COO, along with some help from our Controller/CFO, Julie Kennedy. I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of the many projects that are currently in place and upcoming. Throughout the next three months, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or comments that you may have during this period. My email is ryans@foresthillscc.net. I appreciate your support and look forward to any collaboration.

Firstly, I would like to introduce you to our new Director of Events, Megan Bales. Megan comes from a strong background in country clubs and has years of experience planning and running weddings, golf events, member events, and holiday parties. I have already enjoyed working with her and I could not be happier to have Megan on the team. As we get closer to the holiday season, please reach out to Megan at meganb@foresthillscc.net to begin your holiday party planning!

Fall is a busy time of year at Forest Hills Country Club, and I would like to congratulate our exceptional teams on the success of two large member events: the annual Seafood Boil and the Haunted Autumn Extravaganza, both of which received a wave of positive reviews. I am always the most impressed with our Halloween event, as it involves a copious amount of internal planning, as well as assistance from different departments around the Club. Thank you to Scott Reynolds and Carter DeMay for driving our hayride tractors. The addition of another tractor this year provided a nice boost to the member experience.

In October, we also wrapped up all of our golf leagues, such as the 9 and 18 Hole Women’s groups, and we hosted a total of three Monday golf outings. This year, we had the honor of hosting the St. Louis Chapter of the national Club Management Association of America’s annual golf tournament. CMAA is an organization that many of our managers, including myself, belong to for career educational opportunities and networking.

We are excited to be moving forward with quite a few projects inside the Clubhouse. The new doors entering the Golf Shop have been replaced and recently painted. There are still a few remaining doors on the lower level that need painted. In addition, the Ballroom doors have now been replaced and are in the process of being painted. We have one door left in the Terrace Room that will be replaced this year. The Ballroom carpet will be replaced at the beginning of January. The old drapes and drapery hardware will be getting a much-needed facelift. The Prefunction space will also be getting new carpet and the tile border will be removed. Thank you to our House Committee and Design Sub-Committee for their assistance on this work. Our three unit, walk-in cooler-freezer combo located in our basement is scheduled for replacement during our annual shutdown as well. Lastly, for an update on our current Golf Course projects, please see Scott Reynolds’ article on page 7.

Best regards,

Vivienne Gore

Notes From the Board Chair by Charles Nance

Fellow Club Members,

I am pleased to present the nominees for the next FHCC Board Class. Mindy Jeffries, Nick Licavoli, and Tom McKittrick were proposed to the Board by the Nominating Committee and unanimously accepted. Their names will appear on the ballots in the upcoming election next February. The Nominating Committee carefully evaluated the skills required for Board service, following the guidelines set in the Board Policies Manual, and conducted personal interviews with potential candidates. The committee was unanimous in recommending these individuals For anyone interested in the details of the process, please refer to the Board Policies Manual and the Club Bylaws, which are posted on the Club website.

Mindy Jeffries has been involved with FHCC for 23 years. Her family has been active in both our swim program and in golf during that time. Mindy has served on the Swim, Golf, and Finance Committees. She has 40 years of corporate leadership experience. Her service on our committees has been productive and constructive. I greatly appreciate her thoughtful and lighthearted approach to the discussions in the committee meetings. Mindy and Ken were the first family to designate a spouse as a Voting Member under the new Bylaws change approved by our golf membership last spring.

Nick Licavoli has previously served two four-year terms on the Board of Directors and has held several key positions, including Chair of the Finance Committee, member of the Governance Committee, Chair of the Grounds Committee, and member of the Covid-19 Taskforce. He is also active in the Men’s Golf Association We are fortunate to have members like Nick who are willing to continue to contribute their time, talent, and energy to the Club through service on the Board.

Tom McKittrick and his family have been members since 2019. He has served on the Golf Committee and is active in the Men’s Golf Association. His family actively participates in Couples Golf, the Future Junior Golf Program, the Swim Program, and regularly attends the family-oriented events at the Club. He will bring to the Board of Directors a valuable understanding of how we may best continue to meet the needs and expectations of our younger families.

During the interview process, the Nominating Committee focused on finding members who could strengthen the perspectives and experiences needed to bring effective leadership to the Club in the future. There was also a focus on the skills needed to lead our Strategic Committees in the future. More information about the candidates and the voting schedule will be distributed and posted between now and February. If elected, these three members will then serve a four-year term, beginning in April of 2025 and ending in March of 2029.

One key criterion considered when nominating future Board Members for service is their active and constructive participation on our committees. If anyone has an interest in future service, your participation will be welcomed. Committee Chairs typically renew their rosters in the February/March time frame. Committee, their Chairs, and members are listed on the Club website and on the board in the entrance from the South Terrace.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

-Charles Nance, Board Chair

October Employee of the Month

Please join us in recognizing our October Employee of the Month, Tim Koelling!

“Tim has many talents that extend beyond keeping the 150+ pieces of machinery operational in the Grounds Maintenance Department, and he has also been a long-time member of our team for the last 18 years. He is creative, resourceful, and one of the smartest employees around. Tim is also our problem solver in Grounds Maintenance. This October, we commissioned him to secure a rental trailer to be used as our second Haunted Hayride wagon. Tim had the responsibility to make it safe yet not put any holes into the rental. Needing railings for safety, Tim designed a way to make it safe with no damage to the trailer. It was spectacular. He also secured decorations and with the help of some staff they made it look great. Job well done, Tim!”

Recognition from our members means the world to us. Please continue to share instances of exceptional employee dedication with Ryan Schaben at ryans@foresthillscc.net or Abby Le, Director of Human Resources, at abbyl@foresthillscc.net

Tim Koelling Grounds Mechanic

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,

This is what is happening and what’s yet to come on the Golf Course. Our staff is very busy with many improvements to the Golf Course.

Irrigation Lake on Holes #2 & #3

You will begin seeing the irrigation lake water level getting lower through the month of November. We are intentionally doing this to prepare for the lake edge repair on Hole #3. We need to have the water level below the bottom boulders for the contractor to be able to dig behind the wall. The fastest and most efficient way to lower the water level is by using our irrigation system when we water at night. This saves us from renting pumps and is much faster.

Hole #3 Lake Edge Repair

I wrote about this in one of my past updates. At that time, we were anticipating starting the project before Thanksgiving. Our contractor has had some delays with their current project, causing us to delay our start date. This project is now scheduled to begin after Thanksgiving. We will know a more accurate start date as we move through November.

Hole #5 Cart Bridge

The stone mason started removing old rock off the bridge this week. They have finished removing the inside of the bridge walls. Their next step is to work from inside the creek so they can remove the outside stone from the walls. They will lay down tarps to contain all the falling rock, so the creek doesn’t get contaminated. Scaffolding needs to be erected in the creek bottom so they can reach the elevation of the bridge. This project is scheduled to be completed in late November.

Pickleball Fence & Restoration of Surrounds

The pickleball fence is scheduled to begin installation, weather permitting, on Monday, November 4th. We anticipate this project taking two to three days to complete. This week, your Grounds Maintenance team has been working on restoring the sit due to the additional concrete and stone wall installation. We have also installed drain pipe, irrigation pipe, and backfilled soil around the new concrete. Our next step this week will be removing the overabundance of soil piled up as well as cleaning up the remaining dirt and rock sitting on the parking lot. We anticipate doing the final stage of restoration, which is seeding and straw matting, after the fence is installed.

Right Side of Hole #5 Creek

We have applied Roundup herbicide to kill the grass to the right of the creek. This is in preparation for seeding native grasses, similar to what was planted during the creek project. That process will begin this month.

Dead Tree Removal & New Tree Planting

Our tree contractor has started removing dead trees from the Golf Course. They will be working on select days over the next two months. Our first priorities for them are to remove dead trees in the vicinity of where new trees will be installed. Not every dead tree location has a new tree to be installed. On Monday, November 4th, they will be removing three trees on the Hole #3 side of the irrigation pump house. The roots of these trees are pushing the rock wall into the lake. As part of the wall restoration along Hole #3, the contractor will reset the collapsing boulders by the pump house.

Thank you,

- Scott Reynolds, GCS

The Golf Shop has just received new fall and winter apparel. There is no better time to use your credit and do some early shopping for the holidays! As a reminder, all credit expires on December 31st. There is over $28,000 on the books waiting to be used! If you are unsure if you have credit, call the Golf Shop staff to double check. With balances going to zero on January 1st , combined with the convenience and selection, make it a point to stop by the Golf Shop soon. This month, we will have a variety of sale items each week, so come by often.

Our wide selection of Peter Millar, Holderness & Bourne, and Greyson will keep your shopping easy. Much of the apparel is lifestyle and not golf-specific, making it simple to buy for anyone. Not only do we have apparel and the latest equipment, but there are specialty items as well, including headcovers, glassware, belts, metal ball markers, and more with the Forest Hills logo. For sports fans, we have unique items such as Forest Hills logo-ed footballs, football helmets, and mini basketball hoops. These certainly provide that one-of-a-kind item someone will appreciate.

The Golf Course is in tremendous condition. Make time on your busy calendar to come enjoy the fresh weather, even if it is only for nine holes. And don’t forget about the Valley Course; it can be played quickly and is always a challenge.

We look forward to seeing you soon and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow! What a season! It is hard to believe that our 2024 season is complete. We had so many amazing events this year, some traditional and a couple with new formats. Our new two-day Member-Guest and the Bring-a-Friend Charity event were well received and enjoyed by all.

October ended with the last day of our Solheim Cup competition and Beat the Pro. Solheim Cup was a great two-day event. Team USA, captained by Cathy Moffit, and Team Europe, captained by Joyce Jackson, battled through four nine-hole formats. In the end, Team Europe came out as the 2024 winner.

Fall Bocce Season Recap by Jake Boaz

My first ever Bocce League Season is under my belt! It was a great success, thanks to everyone who made it extremely fun and very entertaining. The Fall 2024 Bocce Leagues saw many members of the Club playing on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for six weeks, from September to late October. Each league consisted of eight teams, with 222 members in total. This was great to see and has me excited for the Spring 2025 Season. Thank you to everyone who joined and helped make the leagues another huge success this year!

At the end of the season, every team was ranked. The top four teams from each league made it to the playoffs, which were held on Wednesday, October 23rd. After a full night of games, the top two teams from each league advanced to the championship games, which were held on Sunday, October 27th

In the Wednesday Night League, we had teams Turf Ticklers, Rolling Thunder, Pour Choices, and Ball Breakers qualify for the playoffs. The league’s top-ranked team, the Turf Ticklers, were coming off a Spring 2024 League Championship and weren’t stopping there. They continued their dominance and took first place overall in the Wednesday Night League, which sent them straight to the overall championship match. Congratulations to the Turf Ticklers and Team Captain, Jason Reynolds.

In the Thursday Night League, Teams Lady Beocces, Billionaire Ballers, Rollin’ Stones, and Lawn Rangers made it to the playoffs. The Lady Beocces were coming in hot as the top-ranked team, but it was the Billionaire Ballers who came out on top to win the Thursday League Championship title. Congratulations to the Billionaire Ballers and Team Captain, Cindy Cuba.

The two champions then faced off for the title of overall FHCC Fall Bocce Champions. It was a great showing from both sides, but it was the Wednesday Champs, Turf Ticklers, who continued their dominance from the previous season and were crowned the overall Fall Bocce Champions to become our first twotime FHCC Bocce winners, and accomplished it back-to-back!

Thank you again to everyone for making it a great season and making it easy for me to take over the leagues! We will see you in the spring for season five of Bocce here at FHCC!

Hi everyone! As we move through the fall season, we have a few new delicious wines of the month that I am excited to introduce to the Club. I hope you come out and enjoy our recommendations!

First up, we have the Klinker Brick Grenache Blanc for $32/bottle. This 92 point wine exhibits a nose of lemon and lychee and a crisp, bright palate, with a hint of peach that leads to a silky smooth finish. I recommend pairing this with our Lemon Artichoke Chicken or a fish feature. Our next wine is the l'Envoye Moulin-a-Vent Gamay Noir, sitting at 91 points, by Wine Enthusiast. The intense aromas of plush cherry and spice, combined with a raspberry, sage, and black pepper palate lend itself beautifully to our Filet. Enjoy this wine for $32/bottle. Our final wine this month is back by popular demand. The Knights Bridge Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a beautiful bouquet of cassis and Madagascar chocolate, with top notes of lavender blossom. I recommend pairing this with our New York Strip or Prime Rib for $25/glass.

We are also bringing back our holiday wine sales! Stop by the Club before Thanksgiving and pick up a special bottle with your Thanksgiving To-Go orders. We will have a table out by the Ballroom. We hope to see you and your family soon!
