In Loving Memory
It is with deep regret that we inform the membership of the passing of one of our members, Harold (Skip) Schrader. Skip passed away on Thursday, May 18th , 2023. Beloved husband of Daisy Schrader.
“I was always appreciate Skip's warm greetings, his playful smile, and his dedication to his family and community. The commitment he brought to his company shined through his compassion, dedication to excellence, and calling. He certainly will be missed and much adored. Prayers for all of you.
He was a charter member of Forest Hills Country Club. Skip became a member of Forest Hills in June of 1963, 18 months before the Club opened.
It is with deep regret that we inform the membership of the passing of one of our members Charles “ Chuck” Haggett Eggleston. Chuck passed away on Friday, May 12th , 2023. Beloved husband of 49 years of Janet Eggleston.
Chuck had a successful career in both banking and public accounting, and served as lecturer at the University of Wisconsin, at Southern Illinois University, and at the FDIC. Chuck is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in Finance and Industry. He retired as a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1999.

“Chuck was a humble, honorable, generous and great man who was loved, respected and admired by those whose lives he touched. We are proud and blessed to have had him in our lives.”
I wanted to take a moment to update you on the ongoing efforts of the Board, Emma Gore, GM/COO; and the management team to enhance our Club experience. Our primary focus this fiscal year will be on improving the Food and Beverage Department as well as the Grounds Maintenance Department. We want to assure you that we recognize the importance of these areas and are fully committed to making swift improvements.
In response to the concerns expressed by our members about the Food and Beverage Department, we’ve been actively listening to your feedback and working on implementing changes to address the concerns. Our goal is to provide you with a dining experience that is based on high quality food, prompt service and attentive servers. To assist the management team in achieving this we have formed a F&B Task Force, working as a subcommittee of the Entertainment Committee, which is dedicated to identifying and resolving the issues that have been raised. Based on recent feedback from members, we are pleased to report that the food quality is already showing signs of improvement, and we anticipate further enhancements as the culinary team continues to work with Chef, Michael Dority.
Regarding the Grounds Maintenance Department, we received valuable feedback during last year’s golf season. In response, we took immediate action by implementing a short-term strategy of outsourcing certain mowing activities in August and September of last year. The Board and Grounds Committee challenged the management team to develop strategies for improving course conditions going forward. We have already begun implementing changes including cool season spraying for weed control, increased fertilization to improve turf conditions and reduce presence of clover on the courses, higher density seeding in the cool season grass areas of the course to improve turf quality and thickness, significant repairs to Championship Course Hole 8 fairway and drainage, modification of the greens aerification schedule and techniques to promote quicker healing, use of additional top dressing with sand on the greens to improve firmness of the greens, changes to tee box management practices to reduce wear and tear on the smaller high use tees. Additionally, we have increased the full-time staff level to ensure more consistent performance in the future. Our Grounds Team is excited by the progress being made to the course conditions, but they are committed to further improvements as we raise the bar for our membership.
While we acknowledge the challenges we face, it is equally important to celebrate the tremendous improvements that have occurred to our Club’s facilities in the recent past. Thanks to the dedication and financial support of our members, we have made significant developments, such as updated racquet sports facilities, new greatly enhanced outdoor dining options with the Cabana and Eagle’s View venues, popular Bocce Ball courts with a growing number of participants, the Short Game Practice Area and North Putting Green, and the resolution of a long-standing high priority infrastructure concern was addressed with the creek project. These investments have truly transformed our Club and greatly enhance the overall experience.
We recognize that meeting and exceeding our members’ expectations is an ongoing endeavor. To achieve this, we rely on your regular feedback regarding concerns you may have. Rest assured that our Board, Emma Gore, and our management team are dedicated to continuously improving your experience while ensuring our facilities remain in top condition. I look forward to seeing you around the Club and appreciate your support.
Happy summer! Can you feel the excitement in the air? I certainly can, as I witness so many familiar faces basking in the joy of our summer activities. The opening weekend of the Aquatic Center was a success, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect! What a way to kick off the season!
Get ready for a summer ahead packed with Junior Sports that kick off this month! We have an incredible enrollment of over 210 kids in our swim team, 175 kids in Junior Tennis and 170 kids in Junior Golf. It’s going to be a summer filled with laughter, growth, and skills reaching new heights. I can’t wait to witness our talented coaches working their magic and seeing our young athletes thrive in these sports.
Our dedicated Food and Beverage Team has been working tirelessly to ensure that our summer outlets are up and running smoothly. We’ve carefully selected and trained our staff to provide you and your families a remarkable dining experience throughout the season. From delightful culinary creations to refreshing beverages, we can’t wait to serve you and make your summer at the Club even more memorable!
Let’s not forget about the outstanding efforts of our Grounds Maintenance Team. They’ve been hard at work, checking off items from their summer punch list and are committed to ensuring our course is in pristine shape. This week they have been giving special attention to fertilizing all the zoyzia areas and greens, nurturing them to reach their full potential.
Now, let me share a few exciting updates on the happenings around the Club. Firstly, I am thrilled to announce that a new Driving Range Net has been approved by the city. This incredible upgrade will take our current net of 12 feet and elevate it to an impressive 40 feet in all existing areas. However, we’ve recently faced a minor setback as we received the heartbreaking news of the sudden passing of the owner and our main contact for the netting company. We’ve conveyed our deepest condolences to their family and sincerely hope that they can carry on with the project amidst this tragic news.
August will bring a wave of transformation to our Championship Course as we embark on the construction of Betty Billy Bunkers for the remaining bunkers. This exciting project is set to begin in early August and will take approximately three to four months to complete. In other exciting Golf Course news, we will also be changing the water feature on Hole #17 of the Championship Course as the remining piece of the puzzle for phase 2 of the creek project. The creek that flows into the pond on #17 is the only remaining area that is currently untouched. The concept of changing this feature is a part of the Golf Course master plan that was created by our Golf Course Architect, Art Schaupeter, with feedback from the Long Range Planning Committee, and a subcommittee of the Long Range Planning Committee that consisted of our Golf Chair, our Grounds Chair, Scott Reynolds, Jimmy Bals and Myself. This Conceptual Golf Course Master Plan was presented to the Golf and Grounds Committee where it was voted on and approved. It then went to the Board of Directors to review and approve.
The full Conceptual Golf Course Master Plan can be viewed on the Club’s Website under the “My Club” tab, “Long Rang Plan”, “Conceptual Golf Course Master Plan”. This document includes a description of the Architects thought process in changing this feature on the hole.
While we are on the subject of new improvements, I must mention that the Swim Locker Room repair is still under way. Although we had hoped to have them open for you for Memorial Day Weekend, we encountered some supply issues along the way. However, the Swim Locker Rooms will open early this month, but in the meantime, we’ve arranged temporary porta-pottys located on the lower patio for your convenience. Additionally, you can also utilize the Men’s and Women’s Golf Locker Rooms during this period. Just a friendly reminder, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and swim cover ups are required while using these restrooms.
Our commitment to maintaining our facilities continues with the second phase of our flat roof repair happening in the second week of June. You’ll notice a dumpster outside of the Golf Shop for a few days during this time. Please exercise caution in this area as we invest in our facility during this repair.
Now let’s take a moment to celebrate the resounding success of our first inaugural season of Bocce! It has been a blast witnessing the friendly competition and camaraderie on the courts. I’m thrilled to announce that Anne Hoette’s team, “La Bocce Vita,” has been crowned the Spring 2023 Bocce Champions! Congratulations to all the participants for making this inaugural season an unforgettable one. With the weather turning beautiful and the Club abuzz with activity, I wanted to share a few ways that you can help us create an exceptional experience for you and your fellow members:
1. When planning to join us for a la carte dining, please make reservations in advance. This allows us to ensure proper staffing and make your experience seamless.
2. Let’s all embrace a culture of respect and adhere to rules and regulations set forth by our Board of Directors. Take note of the new areas this year and familiarize yourself with the guidelines for Bocce Courts and the Short Game Practice Area. By doing so, we can create a harmonious environment for all to enjoy.
3. Wherever you venture within our Club facilities, kindly abide by the proper dress code. Do remember to inform your guests about our dress code standards before their arrival, ensuring everyone is attired appropriately for the occasion.
4. Your feedback is invaluable to us! We genuinely care about your member experience and are continuously striving to better serve you and your families. Please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts, suggestions and ideas with us.
I look forward to seeing you and your families at the Club this summer!

We hope you enjoyed the pleasant temperatures throughout the month of May. It has felt like a true Spring season. Memorial Day Weekend couldn’t have been any better with temperatures having low’s in the mid 50’s and high’s in the lower 80’s. Humidity was down in the mid 20%, so the “feels like”, equaled actual air temperature. Many things have happened in May and many things will continue to progress through June.
Newly Renovated Practice Green
You might be wondering when the large practice green will roll more like the other greens on the golf course? The maturing process takes time. The green is only eight months old and still had a few thin spots in March. Since March, the green has filled in very well. Because the green was still filling in, the leaf blades naturally were wider than a mature greens leaf blades. Over time, the plants will keep multiplying and once that happens, the leaf blades naturally get thinner due to competition with other plants. This process will take the rest of this year and the green won’t react like the other greens until next season. It is important that Members practice on both putting greens, otherwise the small practice green will get overused and not withstand the traffic, causing it to thin out and stress the turf. We saw this last summer when the new green was being built. I will be working with the Golf Professional Staff to ensure that both practice greens are being used equally.
Newly Seeded Areas with Straw Matting
The newly seeded areas are slowly filling in. Most of the areas have many weeds that germinated along with the seed. We must wait for the desirable cool season grasses to reach adequate maturity before we can apply herbicides to kill the weeds. Plants that are juvenile are susceptible to being injured if we apply herbicides too soon. Thank you for your patience as we continue to restore the Championship Golf Course from the creek project that was completed this spring.
Greens Fertility
We had a great opportunity to fertilize the greens with granular fertilizer the week prior to Memorial Day weekend. This application will be beneficial to the plants as we progress into the hotter summer months. The rest of the summer we will make liquid foliar applications instead of granular, which is what we call “spoon feeding” to keep them in the great condition they are currently in all season.
Localized Dry Areas
As we navigate this current dry weather pattern, we will develop localized dry areas in rough, fairways and tees. This isn’t anything unusual, no irrigation system is 100% perfect. Please know that we have our eye on these areas and will not let them die. We will continue to supplement during the day to boost more moisture in the localized dryer areas. “Dry” isn’t a bad thing when temperatures increase because it helps prevent diseases and allows us to have more control of the moisture levels.

Unusual Mowing Pattern on Greens
The past couple of weeks you have noticed areas along the collars that haven’t been mowed. This isn’t an operator error. We mow these areas with a walking greens mowers because it is less stress on the green. Why have you been noticing them more the past couple of weeks? That is due to the fact that we are still training staff members which has caused us to deviate from our normal mowing routine. We typically mow these clean up passes three times per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) to ensure we have healthy turf. St. Louis, being part of the transition zone, is a very unforgiving place to grow bentgrass greens in the summer months. If we were to mow these circle “clean up” passes everyday we would cause more wear on the greens then we are comfortable with and stress the turf.
As the next few weeks progress, you will see us getting more projects completed. Our list of detail tasks is long and we will continue making incremental improvements. I look forward to seeing you out on the course!
The spring, the Club held our first ever FHCC Bocce League. This was a six-week league, with a 7th week for playoffs and championships, that lasted from April to mid-May. The leagues were held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings with each league having 8 teams. We had over 200 Members who participated in the inaugural league. Thank you to everyone who joined and helped make the leagues a huge success!
At the end of the season, every team was ranked, and the top four teams from each league made it to the playoffs, which were held on Wednesday, May 17th. After a full night of games, the winners or top 2 teams from both leagues advanced to the Championships which were held on Sunday, May 21st

In the Wednesday Night League, Teams Alti Rulli, Holy Rollers, Ball Breakers and Free & Easy all made it to playoffs but it was the 3rd ranked Team, Free & Easy who pulled out the Championship! Congratulations to Capt. Carla Verhulst.
In the Thursday Night League we had Team Winos, Above Average Joes, La Bocce Vita and Billionaire Ballers qualify for playoffs. The league’s 2nd ranked Team, La Bocce Vita, walked away with the Thursday Championship Title! Congratulations to Capt. Ann Hoette. The two champions then faced off for the title of overall FHCC Spring Bocce Champions. The teams fought a grueling battle that lasted until 10:15pm at night, but it was the Thursday Champs, La Bocce Vita, who were crowned the overall Spring Bocce Champions!

Max Kreikemeier wins Old Warson Cup Title
The Old Warson Cup, the first major amateur tournament of the year, featured the top 16 players of last year’s point totals battling in a match-play competition conducted by the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association. During the tournament, Missouri State senior Max Kreikemeier defeated Justin Bryant 2 and 1, winning his first championship at Old Warson Country Club.

Kreikemeier, a Lafayette High graduate and member Forest Hills Country Club, was the No. 12 seed and was playing in the event for the third time.

“I didn’t have super high expectations,” Kreikemeier says. “I had our college [Missouri Valley] golf conference the previous Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and did not play all that great. I was kind of in the midst of some swing troubles. Got there Saturday morning and just played with what I had. Fortunately, it worked out well.”
Congratulaitions Max!

On Sunday, May 14th, Assistant Golf Professionals Nick Jones and Matt Hood saved a baby red tailed hawk. This was underneath a tree, right next to the tee box on hole number 12. The red tailed hawk was picked up by the World Bird Sanctuary. Sprawled out across more than 300 acres outside of St. Louis, World Bird Sanctuary provides a safe haven to approximately 270 animals of various species. The red tailed hawk will be protected and be able to thrive in the wild when it is ready.

9 Hole Ladies Golf News by

amy.jung@att.net
Come rain or come shine, the Nine Hole Ladies are on the course. Despite the dismal forecast the rain did not fall on our Spring Opener. Barb Nance and Tina Vierling gave us a charming theme of Pearls, Putts, and Polka Dots. The day included a wicked wicket putting challenge, friendly foursomes, and a lovely lunch. The wonderful winners are:
FIRST PLACE
Sandy Schwartz
Patti MacDoniels
Barb Nance
Maureen Roth
SECOND PLACE
Sally Sprowls
Ellie Yuska
Talie Manning
Val Giglio
THIRD PLACE
Pam Thelen
Laurie Dolson
Karen Peters
Beth Lastrina
However the rain couldn’t stay away from the Nine Hole bring a friend, but the fifteen-minute drenching didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. It was a lovely, low-key outing that allowed our guests to enjoy Forest Hills’ back nine.
What’s up next: New this year is a PAR THREE SCRAMBLE on June 1st (includes the 9- and 18-Hole women’s groups). FLAG DAY is June 15th. On June 29th don’t forget to show your American spirit by wearing red, white and blue.
Banter about the Nine-Hole Course: Scorecards always seem to be a topic of conversation. The pro shop will post our scores on scheduled nine-hole Thursdays. When a player hits her max score, she should pick up and note PU on her scorecard. If for some reason the player putts out and is over her max, her actual strokes should be noted on her scorecard. GHIN will automatically correct the strokes to the player’s max when the score is posted.
