Due to the club wide annual Autumn Extravaganza event, we will not offer a la carte dinner service on Friday, October 14th. Lunch service will still be available from 11:00 am 3:00 pm.
Please be reminded that during the months of November 2022 - March 2023, the Club does not offer a la carte lunch service on Tuesdays. The Club always remains closed throughout the year on Tuesday evenings for dinner service.
Rylie, a senior at St. Joseph’s High School, competed in and won the Angel Classic Girls Golf Tournament at The Quarry at Crystal Springs Golf Club on September 14th. She shot a 69 ( 1) to take 1st place in a field of 95 players. During an interview with the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Rylie said “This is my senior year and it's all kind of coming together, so I'm just really excited for the rest of the season. My ball striking has been good throughout the season so far. I just really haven't been able to get my putting down. Finally, it just all happened at once.” Congrats, Rylie, and good luck with your senior season!

Member Thomas Evans, age 93, passed away, Wednesday, September 7, 2022. He was born May 31, 1929 in Philadelphia PA, a son of Peyton Randolph and Janetta (nee Fitz Hugh) Evans. Tom graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia. He married the former Mary Hyatt Abbe' on July 5, 1952 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Tom spent his entire 42 year career with Monsanto, beginning in Springfield, Massachusetts. The family moved to St. Louis in 1964. He was later Director of Manufacturing for Fabricated Products, then the Astro Turf division. He retired as Director of OSHA for Monsanto. Tom also served on the board of United Cerebral Palsy and the Productive Living Board of St. Louis County. Tom loved baseball and was an All State pitcher at UVA and pitched in the Tidewater League. He was then drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, but pursued his career with Monsanto. Golf was his other passion and he enjoyed 41 years as a member at Forest Hills Country Club. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary; dear father of Kathy (Stan) Dampier, Tom Evans, Jr., and John (former wife Heather) Evans; and loving grandfather of Cole and Katie Evans. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Peyton Randolph Evans, Jr.
Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,
We are looking forward to an exciting fall with lots of fun activities for you and your families including: the Haunted Autumn Extravaganza, Adult Halloween Costume Party, and Father Daughter Sugar Plum Ball! Here is a brief update on the projects that have been happening around the Club.
I am happy to announce that our permit for our creek stabilization project has been approved by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. We have received bids back from our contractors and are in the reviewing process. We plan to award the project to one of these contractors by mid October. By late October or early November, we will start receiving large stone materials for this project. We will also begin tree removal in certain areas to gain access to the creek and begin preparations to the Championship Course. Work on the creek is planned to begin late November. We will continue to provide further updates in the coming weeks as we prepare the Championship Course for this project.
Viridity has completed the Short Game Area except for a few minor detail items. The greens are starting to sprout grass and the large practice green has even been mowed for the first time. We are looking forward to introducing the membership to this new amenity in May of 2023.
Viridity has moved on to completing the “worst first” Better Billy Bunker project. The bunkers that are the hardest to maintain and the ones that wash out most frequently are on the list to be completed by the beginning of November. There will be 27 bunkers switched to the Better Billy Bunker system. Please continue to follow our progress communicated in our weekly project update emails explaining what to expect during this construction process.
We have begun construction of the two bocce ball courts. We anticipate this project to be completed by the end of October. There will be some construction traffic around the driving range as we continue the construction of the courts. Ryan is currently meeting with other clubs in the area to gain insight on how those clubs handle their bocce leagues and open play. With this information, we will determine the details of our program offerings for leagues and open play and will communicate our program before the spring league begins.
You have probably noticed a number of trees on the golf course that have been tagged with an orange ribbon around the trunk. These trees have been analyzed by a subcommittee of the Grounds Committee. The subcommittee evaluated all trees and developed a list of trees that are sick, dying, dead or hindering the ability to grow good turf. Any tree that fell into one of those categories made it on the list and was ribboned. Many of the sick and dying trees are Ash trees, which show signs of infestation by Emerald Ash Borers, an invasive pest. The Grounds Committee has evaluated the ribbon trees and recommends removing them. We will be getting quotes to remove these trees and will review funding for the tree removal with the Finance Committee.
An aerial view of the Short Game Area after the greens were seeded and the fairway was sodded. This area will open in May of 2023.
The North Putting Green was seeded on September 15th. Conditions have been optimal for the first of two growing seasons before play begins in May 2023.
Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve the Club. We appreciate all your support, and we look forward to seeing you and your family around the Club soon.
Thanks to Glow Vibe Golf for illuminating our Championship Course for the Couples Glow Golf event on Friday, September 17th. A great time was had by all who attended.
Congratulations to our 2022 President's Cup Champion
Michael Dean! Thank you to all the participants this year. On the Left is Michael Dean and on the right is Runner Up Zac Smith.
The Nance’s at the 18 Hole Ladies Couples Event on September 18th.
Congratulations to our 2022 Men’s Member Guest participants! Alan Dorch and his guest, Pete Fitzgerel, were our champions.
As we move into fall, make time this month to get your golf in before the weather changes. Come out for some fresh air, even if it is only for 9 holes on the Championship Course or a quick nine on the Valley. The leaves are changing color and the courses look great. The updates to the practice areas are fantastic. The reshaping of the putting green will make practice fun and effective. The new short game area will be one of the nicest places in St. Louis to practice chipping, pitching, and bunker shots. Although these areas are looking ready to use, please note that they will not open until May 2023. The “Better Billy Bunker” project has started, and it is vital that players do not step in the bunker while work is being performed. This cannot be overstated and must be adhered to for the success of this project.
As a reminder, please check the amount of credit you have on the books in the Golf Shop. There is over $17,000 of credit outstanding that expires at year end. We have received new fall items and now is a good time to use that credit.
Please continue to fill divots using the sand provided on the golf cart, especially on the par three tee boxes. Thank you to all players for taking ownership in keeping Forest Hills Country Club a great place to enjoy the game of golf.
It has been an exciting month for the senior men since the last newsletter, highlighted by the Senior Club Championship event of two rounds. In the net division, Jeff Watson won with a score of 137, followed by John Sherman in second place with a score of 142. In the 3 Man Scramble on August 31, the team of Ron Miles, John Robb and Boyd Atteberry took first place with a net 53, while the team of Stan Grossman, Mark Mager and Doc Schneider finished second and the team of John de Greck, Lee Reid and Ed Mayuga finished third. In the red tees event in September, Jim Harf won with a net score of 62, followed by Ed Mayuga in second place and Tom Faerber in third. The 15/15 event on September 14 saw the team of Stan Grossman, Pat Hopkins and Doc Schneider taking first place, while the team of Bill Bennett, Larry Thayer and Ed Mayuga finished third. The final event before going to press was Crazy Tees, won by Tony Piazza with a net score of 69, followed by John Sherman and Stan Grossman in second and third place respectively. Senior men also distinguished themselves in recent MGA events. Larry Thayer was a member of the winning team in the 2022 MGA Cup while Ron Miles and John de Greck were members of the runner up team. In the MGA President’s Cup, Dave Ganz was a finalist while John de Greck made it as a semi finalist. Kudos to these guys.

Hello FHCC members. Hopefully you are as excited as I am to see the new Short Game Area being built! What an amenity this will add to our great facility. Previously, the Valley Course served as a nice area to work on your wedges and short game. Now, you will be able to get more work in on these shots in a more convenient fashion. With close proximity to the Clubhouse, you are able to practice various short shots from different lies in the grass and bunkers.
Right now I am spending the majority of my time in the Teaching Facility, or with short game lessons over on the Valley. Next season you will see a lot of me at the Short Game Area with all my students. This is an area of the game where I have been successful with player development over the past decade. My students who have seen the most progress have blended full swing help and course management, but most importantly, their short game improvement.
Short shots around the green require a solid foundation with set up, and the knowledge of how to use your wrists to add or de loft the club at impact. Finesse wedge shots require a different motion than you use for your full swing to properly use the bounce on your wedge. The changes can be difficult to trust at first, however, consistency will come if you stay patient.
With the end of golf season closing in, now would be a great time to focus on improving your short game. The new Short Game Area will be opening next spring, but you don’t need to wait. Throughout the Valley Course, there are many spots to work on challenging shots you may encounter and need to learn. Contact me if you would like some help with bunkers, chipping, or putting secrets to help lower your scores.

Halloween is almost here which means the holidays are right around the corner. As we look ahead towards Thanksgiving, we wanted to provide you with an update on what to expect this year. There has been an Avian Flu which means that the availability of turkeys will be limited. This year, the flu has killed 4.5 million turkeys. What does this mean for Forest Hills? It means that we are working with our purveyors to source turkeys, but things may look a little different than in the past. With that being said, we are very excited for our Thanksgiving Carry Outs this year and we don’t expect this to affect the quality of what we are offering you. We will be offering bundles as well as a la carte options and add ons. For a complete list of prices and a la carte add ons, please check out the event flyer on the next page.
Our Thanksgiving to go order deadline will be on Wednesday, November 9th, two weeks before pickup on Wednesday, November 23rd. All Club facilities will be closed on Thursday, November 24th for Thanksgiving. We look forward to helping you and your families celebrate the holidays!
