FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Congratulations to all teams who have won premierships so far this year across our football and netball competitions. It’s been Graham Halbish wonderful to see the joy EFL Chairman on players’, officials’ and supporters’ faces. Doncaster East and Boronia are terrific examples of clubs who have fought back from the disappointment of defeat to taste the ultimate glory. A special mention to Boronia for winning all three grades last Sunday, despite going into all three games as underdogs. A wonderful achievement. This year marks the end of the five-year 2014-2018 Strategic Planning Period for the League, with the key pillars being: Clubs, Participation, Partnerships, Operational Excellence and Financial Management. While the formal review of our performance continues, the period has seen some real highlights and many significant reforms that have helped the league and our clubs continue to prosper. Some of these include: •

The introduction of netball and the growth of girls and senior women’s football, with female participation in competitions now at almost 20%, up from less than 1% at the start of the plan.

Significant investment in club facilities by councils, AFL Victoria and government.

Continued evolution of more appropriate junior rules and structures.

The introduction of the player points system and allowable player payment limits (salary cap).

The new senior men’s football competition restructure to begin in 2019.

Continued League financial stability that has resulted in fixed charges to clubs increasing at

a level well below CPI, while being able to assist clubs through trading difficulties. •

Increased investment in game and club development resources

Streamlining of administrative and game day procedures both at club and League level saving in excess of 15,000 hours of volunteer time each year.

Continued growth in the League’s media operations.

When we look back through time, particularly with the introduction of netball, the growth of girls and women’s footy, the introduction of the player points system and salary cap, and the impending competition restructure, the last five years could be seen as the most significant period of change and reform in the competition’s history. I was out at Lilydale for the Deakin Uni Women’s grand finals and saw two terrific games in front of big, engaged crowds. An example of how you only need to go to games of female football at local level to see the impact it is having. But we understand we must continue to evolve and the next strategic plan will be critical in guiding the League’s operational focus for the next five years and in addressing challenges for both the League and clubs. I’d like to recognise the valued support of our EFL sponsors, in particular naming rights partner Bendigo Bank, and major sponsors Deakin University, Yarra Valley Water, BJS Insurance Brokers, carsales, Channel Nine, 1116SEN and Trojan Tools. To all our other sponsors, suppliers and partners who are listed at the back of the record, thank you for your continued support of the League. The support of all our sponsors, partners and suppliers enables the League to continue to operate as we do and to provide the high level of service to our clubs that has seen the EFL hold the position of prominence it does within the wider community. As you would have seen on entry, each year we make a donation to the Police Blue Ribbon Foundation as part of finals entry prices, a partnership that has been of tremendous benefit to

Welcome to today’s Bendigo Bank Division 1 Grand Final Day. We look forward to today’s clash being another high-water mark in what has been a big year for the League.

both organisations. Our donation this year will take that total to over $200,000, which will go towards the purchase of a critical piece of life-saving equipment for a hospital in Melbourne’s east.

Significant investment has been made into premier facilities in other areas of Melbourne, so we look forward to the east, one of the heartlands of the game, getting our fair share.

Across all our junior and senior, male and female finals, some 24 clubs have helped host and manage finals with the League. It is an important part of how the League operates and we are proud of the fact that we manage such a significant event ‘in-house’, knowing that for every $1 in profit, the EFL generates, at least $2.50 in profit is generated by clubs.

I’d like to thank my fellow Board Members, the Junior Committee lead by Leon Bailey, and the EFL staff for their efforts this season. As the League gets bigger, so does the workload.

We thank Knox Council and Bayswater FC for helping us host today’s game, one the biggest events held annually in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and one which requires a significant amount of planning and effort to present. Groundskeeper Michael Oxworth has done a great job in preparing the surface and has it looking and playing the best it has done in years. With the Eastern Region Australian Rules Football Facility Strategy being written at present, we look forward to working closely and proactively with all councils and government for the benefit of the community.

2

The Eastern Footballer

Finally, to the volunteers who are the heart and soul of EFL footy, I say thank-you for your immense contribution. We are all proud to be part of the EFL family and it’s the cumulative efforts of the individuals within our clubs that help maintain the League’s high standing in the wider community. As debate rages about the quality of the game at the elite level, I don’t think I’ve ever seen clubs and the competition as a whole, more buoyant than what I’ve observed during this year’s final’s series. Footy and netball is alive and well in the east and we take the responsibility to maintain and grow this with extreme pride and a keen sense of duty. Thank-you all for your support in 2018 and we look forward to three great games today. May the best teams win.

JOHNSON HUNGRY FOR MORE By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

T

IM Johnson is the last-remaining current player in Vermont’s senior line-up from the club’s most recent premiership triumph in 2009.

the second-half of the year and hit form at the right time,” Johnson said.

At just 20 years of age, Johnson experienced the ultimate as Vermont took out an unlikely premiership victory despite a slow start to its ‘09 campaign.

“At that time, I think we’d won four premierships in five seasons and they were coming along pretty regularly, and we thought that sort of success would keep going.

The Eagles haven’t won a senior premiership since, having appeared in the 2012, 2016 and 2017 deciders. It signals the club’s second-longest premiership drought of the Eastern Districts/EFL era in the club’s illustrious history, which has seen 19 senior EFL premierships – eight seasons – which is an eternity in Vermont terms. The club’s longest wait between drinks was from 1972-1981, where it enjoyed a golden period thereafter with senior flags in 1982, ‘83, ‘86, ‘88, ‘89, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93, ‘94, ‘95, ‘97, ‘98, 2001, ‘05, ‘06, ‘07 and ’09.

“We still had to do it the hard way through the finals as we lost to Croydon in the semi, but managed to turn it around a couple of weeks later.

“That was my second season and in two years I played in one winning grand final and one losing one so it sort of felt like as a 20-year-old at that stage that I might end up with a few more but it hasn’t panned out that way, but we’ve still been a successful club in this period. “It is a bit of a so-called ‘drought’.” The privilege of donning the purple and gold on the Eastern Football League’s biggest day is not lost on Johnson.

The ex-club captain Johnson, now 29, is in hot pursuit of the taste of premiership glory once again.

“It’s a massive privilege and it’s one of the most well-known local footy clubs in the country I’d say because the club’s been so successful and it’s got so much history,” he said.

“It’d be nice to have some teammates who can share the same sort of success and it’s funny how quick it goes – as a 20-year-old I didn’t really appreciate just how hard they were to win,” Johnson said.

“There’s a bit of a special feeling about Vermont and it’s something that’s really nice – current and past players really respect the club’s history and feel really privileged to play a small part in it.”

“I certainly enjoyed it a lot and it meant a lot to me and probably later on in your career you realise the chance to win them doesn’t come along that often and there’s a reason they’re so sought-after.”

Any advice the Eagles’ last active ’09 premiership hero can impart onto teammates ahead of the bounce at 2.20pm this Saturday is simple – stick to routine.

The 2009 premiership holds pride of place for many at Vermont given the club had recorded just two wins from its opening seven starts that season. “I think we were one game off the bottom of the ladder (after Round 7, 2009) – we got on a bit of a roll and from memory, a few guys re-invented themselves in new positions and it really worked for us – we got heaps of momentum through

“For the most part it’s about trying to enjoy the occasion without letting it be too distracting and you stick to your routine and the things that have worked for you all year because those are the same things that’ll hopefully work for you in grand final week and day,” Johnson said. “The only real advice is to keep your composure throughout the week and try not to play the game in your head too much.”

DIVISION 1 GRAND FINAL PREVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

T

HE big dance in Division 1 will be decided when Vermont and South Croydon lock horns again on Saturday afternoon.

extra-time five-point victory over Blackburn in last week’s preliminary final.

The Eagles ended their home and away season as the minor premiers with 15 wins while the Dogs closely followed them in second with 14 wins.

“You know it makes the boys know that they can get the job done if we’re there at the end,” McCormick said.

For reigning premier South Croydon under the tutelage of new coach Luke McCormick, the club is shooting for backto-back flags today as the vibe down at the club is buzzing. “(We’re) extremely excited - this year having the reserves in as well makes it twice as exciting because obviously it’s a whole club thing,” McCormick said. “Especially because our under-19s who are merged with Whitehorse obviously won the grand final this year and our division one netball girls won the grand final as well.” In terms of preparation, the Dogs aren’t going about the week leading up to the game any different from during the season. “We try and keep things fairly similar,” McCormick said. “Obviously playing Vermont two weeks ago and getting beaten, we’re looking at what we can do to try and rectify that,” McCormick said. “Just making sure we get the boys as fresh as we can, Vermont had the week off and we played on the weekend. “Hopefully we will use that momentum going into Saturday and get the boys ready.” South Croydon has had a couple of close games in the last few weeks in the lead up to today’s grand final, including a six-point win over Doncaster in the qualifying final and an

McCormick is certain if his side has the belief they’ve had throughout its finals campaign, it will hold the club in good stead in pursuit of its ninth senior EFL flag.

“They’re certainly excited and the fact that we have both sides in as Vermont do too, that’s pressure for spots as the whole lists are still playing and guys are trying to put their best foot forward that’s for sure. “We need to pressure them as hard as we can and that’s what a lot of our game plan is based around. “We to need to obviously start well but also be with them as much as we can at each break and just make sure we have 22 contributors and if we do, we’ve got a side that can take them on that’s for sure.” Vermont has gone through its finals campaign with just playing one final before the game this Saturday. The Eagles defeated South Croydon by 55 points in the semi-final to cement their spot in the 2018 grand final. Senior coach Harmit Singh spoke to EFL Sunday after his side’s semi-final win over South Croydon. “I think our last month has been reasonably strong,” Singh said. “I think getting some continuity with our playing has definitely helped (winning the semi-final). “Definitely the teams have an understanding of what each other are like and do and I guess what their trademarks are as a club. “Ultimately you have to back yourself and your systems.” The minor premier has had a couple of close in counters with a number of the top five teams on the ladder including South Croydon, Doncaster and Blackburn, yet was able to overcome any of the doubt. “To be honest, some people questioned us as a side six or seven weeks ago and we knew what we needed to work on,” Singh said. “We were in this position last year and it’s important that we come to play,” Singh said. With the strong forward line of Andrew Ainger, Brett Eddy and Jake Best – who have combined for over 150 goals this season - the Eagles are well-suited to the bigger Bayswater Oval. “Bayswater gives them a little bit of space to work into as opposed to playing at Vermont,” Singh said. “Now they’ve played a few games in a row together, we’re just building chemistry with our midfields and forwards in terms of our connection and it has been positive.” Both sides will have their reserves play in the grand final before the main event. For Vermont saw success with its under-19s and reserves last year in the big dance, so both the reserves and seniors will be looking for the ultimate glory on Saturday. “We want to be successful in all grades - it’s important for us to have as much team success as we can.”

A STAGE FIT FOR A KING By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

T

HE stage is set for the man affectionately known as ‘Zippy’.

South Croydon’s Michael King will today play his final game in the Bendigo Bank Division 1 seniors or reserves grand final, as his beloved Bulldogs look for back-to-back senior premierships. The 35-year-old is part of the furniture at Cheong Park, belonging to the famous King clan led by club captain Dan King - along with cousin and teammate, Steve Dinnell. King broke the news of his impending retirement to teammates on Monday night. “I thought it was best to tell the boys that this is it,” King said. “I’ve played with a lot of them for about 17 years and then other blokes who I’ve only got the chance to play with this year that have been there for the past three years that are part of the furniture now. “(My wife and I) have got a young kid and we actually just announced this week that we’ve got a second one on the way. “It was sort of a few weeks ago I said that this is the perfect time to go (and) I came back to South Croydon this year anticipating and certainly praying that this moment (a Division 1 grand final) was going to happen and it has which is very exciting. “Both sides (seniors and reserves) in grand finals makes it amazing.”

The final stage of a Division 1 grand final is fitting for the favourite son, who returned home to the Kennel after three seasons at Chirnside Park. The stalwart has been an integral part of the club’s meteoric rise from competing in Division 3 in 2006 to a Division 1 powerhouse looking to salute again today. In 2006, he helped the Bulldogs to the Division 3 premiership victory over Upper Ferntree Gully, booting 55 majors for the season to begin the club’s journey to the top-tier, followed by a Division 2 flag in 2009 which saw a nine-point win over Mulgrave, in a year where ‘Zippy’ produced 73 goals. King remembers struggling through a bout of osteitis pubis in the 2013 season when the club played its first-ever Division 1 EFL final, and the gut-wrenching devastation felt as he watched his Bulldogs from the sidelines. “I remember breaking down with my osteitis pubis in the training session leading up to our final against Norwood that year,” King said. “I had tears in my eyes and I thought that’s it – I’m 31 and never going to play in a first division final ever. “I’m glad I made the move to go to Chirnside Park for a few years as I felt it helped prolong my career, to still being able to play at age 35 but one of the main reasons for coming back was the chance for success to finish my career was also huge.” Family has been the cornerstone of King’s success as a footballer – from a child playing endless games of football and cricket with his brothers and cousins across countless Christmases to taking to the senior field together for South Croydon. www.efl.org.au

“I’ve been absolutely blessed to play with so many of my family over the years – in cricket at Ringwood and in footy with South Croydon,” King said. “To play with ‘Dano’ (Dan King) for one last time and to play with Steve – I didn’t get too many opportunities to play with Steve because he was at North Ballarat for all those years but to play with him as well, it’s just amazing. “Christmas day we’d always be playing cricket or footy against each other and that competitive nature from a young age has got us to where we are.” Form has never been an issue with age in the family’s bloodlines – for Michael, nor for current players Dan King and Steve Dinnell, who continue to produce on the big stage time and again. After all, ‘Zippy’ helped the Bulldogs to their thrilling sixpoint qualifying final victory over Doncaster, when he burst forward late in the game to calmly slot the winner on the run from 35 metres out. “As a negative, we’re all weird,” King joked. “But that (talent) is one thing the majority of the family have been blessed with which I guess started with our dads and my uncles – they were very good sportsmen growing up and I know the amount of time Dano’s dad Noel put in with him and the amount of time my dad put in with me, Matt and David, and Johnny with Steve and Christopher (Dinnell).” Regardless of the result, King says playing in today’s Division 1 decider stands head and shoulders above all else in his career. “Pure and simple it (a Division 1 premiership) would be my best moment ever,” he said. “I don’t think anyone who’s been around the club takes for granted how successful we’ve been and how fun it’s been to be around - it is an amazing club. “In terms of football, this is the pinnacle – it already is, regardless of what happens on the weekend – it’s the highlight of my footy career.” 13

DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES VERMONT: We are very excited and proud to have our seniors and reserves here today and disappointed that our under-19s failed last week by two points to join us on the field. Congratulations to all of our coaches and the players for another terrific season across our three teams. But of course, there are no prizes for finishing on top and then making a grand final. You have to win them. There are lots of people to thank for supporting and helping our teams, like team managers, Neville Roulston, Andrew Powell and Steve Trask; trainers led by Alicia Carroll and the coaches; Harmit Singh, Paul Breen, Brad Cullen, Garry Connolly, Marty Pask, Brad Dean, Paul Barlow, Kris Barlow and Sean Furey. We should not forget the junior club under president Clint Wheeler, which continues to maintain outstanding standards of conduct and team performances highlighted by the first-year premiership win of the women’s team. Off the field, we thank the many folk who keep it all going, people like Col Smyth, Tim Graham, John Bell, Kath Partridge and Katrina Lynch. We also appreciate the wonderful contribution of our coterie group ‘Eagletonians’ under chairman Rodney Haynes and the Vermont Sports Club lead by Don Parsons. We wish all the players representing us today in the seniors and reserves the best of luck and know you will do your best. A special thank-you and commiserations to those players that received seasonending injuries along the way - Charlie Young, Andy Ellis, Ryan Antidormi, Jordan Vassis, Matt Barnard and Jay Barlow. A special thank-you to VFL player Michael Knoll who played where ever he was selected without question and continues to improve his game. SOCIAL: We want see a big crowd back at Vermont tonight and tomorrow for a very social Sunday afternoon which starts at 12-noon, featuring our grand final raffle and the music of Jimmy Darvitis. Presentation Night will be next Thursday, 27th September at the clubrooms starting at 6.30pm - that will include our women’s football and netball teams. We are the mighty Eagles.

SOUTH CROYDON: Wow – what an amazing few weeks culminating in today – our two senior teams in grand finals! It all started a couple weeks back with a Division 1 netball team premiership, followed by an under-19 flag and a veterans’ grand final. Last weekend, two terrific games against Blackburn resulting in preliminary wins and grand final appearances by both reserves and seniors! Those that read the record will remember the same edition last year when we asked you all to dare to dream – well the dream came true then and there is no reason to believe why it couldn’t happen again! If our supporters are true to form, you are out in force today and are reading this page surrounded by many Bulldog supporters and the Bayswater Oval is predominately red, white and blue! What a ride the year has been for everyone associated with your club, and we wouldn’t be in the place we are at the moment without the buy-in and commitment of everyone involved. We unreservedly thank the players in all teams, coaches, football staff, committee, volunteers, members, sponsors and supporters. This day wouldn’t be possible without you all, so enjoy it! No matter the final outcome, tonight it will be back to the rooms to again celebrate the year that was – please join us after the game till late. Social SCFC Presentation Night - 12th October at Cheong Park, 7pm start. $65 per head for 3 course meal. Drinks at bar prices. Contact Cathy 0403 122 966 or Michelle 0409 929 155 to book. Check the Facebook page or newsletter for full details – pre-payment is required. Go Doggies!

EFL GRAND FINAL UMPIRES FIELD UMPIRES Damien Sully: Damien is a seasoned field umpire with AFL experience and is umpiring in his first Division 1 grand final. Hard work has been the cornerstone of how Damien applies himself - in the off-season Damien undertook an intensive pre-season program that saw him return to the EFL fitter and stronger and more prepared for the season ahead. Damien’s work-ethic and approach to his umpiring are the key factors to his selection umpiring the Division 1 grand final in 2018. Dan Beard: Dan umpired his first Division 1 senior grand final as a 17-year-old, before progressing to VFL-level where he officiated in 220 senior matches. On his subsequent return to the EFL, Dan has umpired in the last eight Division 1 senior grand finals, with today being his ninth in a row. Jason Hermann: Jason is umpiring in his fifth Division 1 senior grand final, having umpired his first in 2015. He is an extremely hard-working umpire not only on match-day but also during any training session, where his preparation is as meticulous as any, which has seen him rewarded with another Division 1 grand final.

GOAL UMPIRES Ashley Powney: Ashley has had a strong and consistent year, bringing quality to each match he is involved in. Ashley represented the EFL’s Umpires Association at interleague level this season and was deservedly rewarded with the 2018 Goal Umpire of the Year award. The Division 1 grand final appointment stems from having had a great finals series with fantastic composure in the recent highpressure matches. Corey Brown: Corey commenced his umpiring career with the EFL in 2009, starting out as a boundary umpire. In 2011, he was invited to the VFL and continued as a boundary umpire until 2014. In 2015, Corey returned to the EFL and decided to become a goal umpire in 2016. Corey has umpired over 260 games including finals, and today he officiates his second Division 1 senior grand final.

24

The Eastern Footballer

BOUNDARY UMPIRES Connor Hagan: A career of five seasons with the EFL, Connor has ticked all the boxes from his debut, working through the grades establishing himself as a leader amongst his peers and a seasonal campaigner when finals are in sight. After a season-ending hamstring injury in Round 18 last year, Connor went to work over the pre-season to arrive and be ready from Round 1 this season. His preparation has held him in good stead, having umpired the year in Division 1, involved in the state championships, and being awarded the Umpire of the Year. Daniel Maakasa: Daniel has been awarded the Most Improved Umpire for 2018, and his peers could not agree more. Brings enormous energy to the role and has been a credit to the umpiring fraternity this season. Lachlan Macrae: In only his second season, Lachlan made early progress in his return this year umpiring a number of Division 2 and 3 games. Having not done the pre-season, Lachlan himself acknowledged that he needed to trim down and get serious about his umpiring, and to his credit between Round 4 to 8, he’d stripped nearly 10 kilograms. Since, he has ticked all the boxes, and then challenged the list ahead of him that had established themselves in Division 1. A tremendous story, one that started as a player with the Ringwood Spiders just four years ago. Hamish Lazaro: Officiating in his second consecutive Division 1 senior grand final, Hamish joined the EFL in 2016 where his undeniable fitness and endurance has seen him break through to the top-tier. During the off-season, he races in track and field, combining his umpiring commitment and cross country schedule.

GREATS BECOME LEGENDS By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

T

WO Eastern Football League greats were officially elevated to legend status in front of over 400 people at the annual Chandler Medal Night on Wednesday.

Doncaster’s Chris Annakis was awarded the Sir Gilbert Chandler Medal for the second-consecutive season, winning on 33 votes - 13 ahead of Norwood’s Rhett Jordan. Eastern Football League legend status is achieved by winning three senior competition best and fairest awards.

He also represented the EFL in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships this season, as the League claimed the number-one state ranking in the victory over the Geelong league at Etihad Stadium in May. A memorable Chandler Medal Night for Annakis was capped off by being named captain of the SEN Division 1 Team of the Year. Bayswater’s Joel Galvin was crowned the Kenneth Wright medallist as the best and fairest in Division 2, winning on 24 votes - two ahead of Doncaster East’s Michael Steven. The honour means Galvin is also now recognised as an official League legend, having also won the Division 2 best and fairest in 2012 and 2016. The Bayswater captain joins father and current club president Gary Galvin as an official legend, who completed a three-peat as the competition’s best and fairest in 1980-81 (Division 1 and Division 2) and 1982 (Division 1). Ringwood captain Trent Farmer took out his second-consecutive Division 3 Paul Edie Medal finishing five votes ahead of Heathmont’s Brent English in a season which saw the Redbacks’ forward boot 62 majors. For the second year running, Farmer was also named captain of the SEN Division 3 Team of the Year. Meanwhile Coldstream’s Darcy Carrigan won the Perc James Medal as the best and fairest in Division 4, two votes ahead of Glen Waverley Hawks’ Beau Parthenides. Scoresby’s Bianca Pilkington won the Premier Division Netball EFL best and fairest award, off the back of playing an integral role in her side’s Premier Reserve premiership victory.

The top honour elevates 30-year-old Annakis to become just the 14th man in League history to achieve the feat, after winning the Chandler Medal in 2017 and the Kenneth Wright Medal in Division 2 in 2015. Annakis enjoyed a stellar season as the pacey, smoothmoving Sharks captain again proved a vital cog in a campaign which saw his side win 14 matches to finish fourth at the end of the home and away season, reaching the Division 1 semi-finals. 28

Meanwhile, Blackburn rising star Makenzie Doreian received the Leader Young Gun award for Division 1 and 2, as Heathmont’s Fin Brown took the honours for Division 3 and 4. In the Deakin University Eastern Region Women’s presentation on Tuesday night, The Basin’s Teagan Sheldon won the Division 1 best and fairest award, finishing on 25 votes – three ahead of Vermont’s Marissa Lee. Meanwhile, South Croydon’s Ebany Vanderheym won the Division 2 best and fairest, finishing on 36 votes ahead of Donvale’s Jess Crundall.
