FOOTBALLER SUNDAY 1 SEPTEMBER

SNR. WOMEN’S/NETBALL/VETS GRAND FINAL 2019

WE SALUTE OUR SPONSORS!

WELCOME TO GRAND FINAL DAY

Sponsorship plays a vital role in sport at all levels and without it the league would not be as successful as it is today. The income generated from sponsorship reduces the financial burden on competing clubs and keeps the cost of football in the EFL within reach of all supporters.

On behalf of AFL Outer East Region General Manager Aaron Bailey and myself, welcome to Grand Final Day for the Eastern Region Girls and Deakin University Eastern Region Women’s competitions.

Naming Rights Partner

This year saw a record 150 teams split across 22 competitions, with 117 teams coming from EFL clubs and 33 from AFL Outer East clubs. With a full suite of age levels now on offer and multiple divisions in every age group, there is somewhere for everyone to play. Female footy in the east has come a long way in such a short space of time. Female participation has had a huge positive impact on the football club environment, we look forward to this evolving further.

Major Community Partner

Major Sponsors

The talent programs continue to grow with our interleague girls performing very well, with 52 girls selected to represent the ERGFL in Division 1 and Division 2 of the metro championships. Our Division 1 side won two out of three games played, while our Division 2 side won one game. Apart from those on the field, there has been a huge contribution from coaches, team managers and club officials, along with the mums, dads and carers that support their children. To all involved we say a big thank-you and trust your experience in Eastern Region female footy this year has been a positive one. Along with the players, it’s also an important day for the umpires who will be involved in the game. They train to train each week to learn and develop and be the best they can be. They too have reached a goal of their own and for that we offer them our congratulations on their achievements and hope they continue with their umpiring into the future. As you watch the games this weekend, remember these are young men and women who, like the players, are also developing and learning their craft.

Thank you also to the host clubs of our junior girls and senior women’s finals series. Hosting finals at independent venues is an important part of any competition and with a competition of our size, it is a difficult task that could not be completed without the help and support of both EFL and AFL Outer East clubs. The hospitality shown by host clubs this year has been excellent. In closing I would like to acknowledge the work of the junior committees of both AFL Outer East and the EFL. The AFL Outer East Junior Committee has been wonderfully-led by junior coordinator Andy Gibbons and he has been admirably supported by Russell English, Maxine Armstrong, Nan Cleven, Ray Fellows and Mal Darke. The EFL Junior Committee is led by Chairman Leon Bailey and is made up of Ian Singleton, Mark Pascoe, Phil Hermann and Bernard Fewster. They give wonderful service to the League, attending junior games every Sunday, liaising with clubs and ensuring the standards we are all so proud of continue to be upheld. A big thank-you also to our Female Competitions Coordinator Jessie Mulholland, who has done a great job managing the competition, ably supported by EFL Junior Manager Chris White, EFL Senior Football Manager Dyson Baker and AFL Outer East Operations Manager Cameron Hutchison. Good luck to all teams today and remember, whether a player, official or supporter, barrack hard and loud but make sure you represent your club in a manner which does everyone proud.

EFL 2019 GRAND FINAL INFORMATION ADMISSION PRICES

• Applaud good play by both teams.

Price of admission to all finals games is $5.00 per adult. Children under 17 years are admitted free of charge.

• Encourage players to always participate according to the rules and respect official’s decisions.

Please communicate this to all interested parties to avoid arguments at entrance gates.

• Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches and officials.

Admission price is for one venue only – if you attend another ground on the same day, you will need to pay another admission cost.

• An umpire’s job is a difficult one – put yourself in their position – how would you like to be treated?

NO DOGS OR ALCOHOL

• If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public.

Dogs are banned at all EFL games including finals and alcohol is not permitted to be brought into any finals venue. It would be appreciated if all clubs would stress these points to their supporters.

DRAWN MATCHES In the event of a drawn game in any of the finals (including grand finals) the following conditions will apply: • Goal umpires will confirm the scores. • Players will not change ends after full time, but will kick to the same end as they were in the fourth quarter. • Field umpires will re-commence the game for the duration of five (5) minutes. The siren will sound, the teams will change ends and a further five (5) minutes is played. • If the game is still drawn after the second five (5) minute period, play is to continue and the siren will sound after the first score. • At no stage during extra time will coaches be permitted to address players

EFL CODE OF CONDUCT The EFL’s Code of Conduct is designed to help improve the environment for players and supporters.

• Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not harassing or using foul language to umpires, players, coaches, or other spectators. • Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players. • Respect the rights and dignity of every player regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. • Discuss the Codes of Conduct with your son/ daughter so that you are both aware of your obligations.

PREMIER DIVISION The Whitehorse Suns have another chance against Chirnside Park after defeating Mount Evelyn in a nail-biting preliminary final, prevailing by only three points. The last time the two sides met was only two weeks ago in a semi-final, on that occasion Chirnside Park was victorious, comprehensively beating the Suns by seven goals. Whitehorse will need to find something if it’s going to be any chance this weekend against the minor premiers; Chirnside however, needs to be careful not to get complacent as anything can happen on an occasion as big as a grand final. After kicking three in the semi-final, Chirnside’s Jessica Proven will be looking to repeat that performance this Sunday at Lilydale Sports Oval.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S Fresh from the week off, The Basin will hope to repeat its semi-final performance as it takes on South Croydon once more this weekend in the big dance. After being held goalless by the minor premiers two weeks ago, South Croydon has a chance to rectify its semi-final defeat. The Bulldogs were too good for Upwey Tecoma last weekend and will need another big performance from best-on-ground Kate McKella, if they are going to turn their form against The Basin around on Sunday at Lilydale Sports Oval.

• Actively promote the Codes of Conduct at all times. • Spectators are asked to stay off the playing arena during the quarter time and threequarter time breaks to assist with the League’s scheduling of matches. • Spectators are however welcome on the playing arena at half-time and at the conclusion of matches for the post-match presentations.

EXPECTATIONS OF PLAYERS • Always play by the rules.

It’s important that everyone involved on match days is familiar with what is considered to be ‘reasonable behaviour’.

• Control your temper – treat others as you would like to be treated – bullying will not be tolerated.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS/ GUARDIANS AND SPECTATORS

• Verbal abuse to umpires, officials or other players is not acceptable.

• Remember that children play football for fun – they are not playing for your entertainment, nor are they miniature professionals.

• Never argue with an umpire or official. If you disagree, discuss the matter with your coach.

• Encourage players to participate, do not force them.

• Co-operate, support and encourage your teammates – your team’s performance will benefit, so will you.

• Focus on the players’ efforts – never ridicule or yell at a player for making a mistake or losing the game.

• Respect the rights and dignity of all players regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

• Remember that players learn best from example.

• Play for the “fun of it” – it’s just a game!

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - DEAKIN UNI SENIOR WOMEN’S

The Eastern Footballer - EFL SENIOR WOMEN’S/NETBALL DIV 4-7/VETERANS Finals 2019

NORTH DIVISION WOMEN’S Ladder top-two North Ringwood and Park Orchards will clash in the North Division grand final this weekend, only two weeks after the sides met in a semi-final where North Ringwood was victorious by 21 points at home. Park Orchards found some form in its preliminary final against Chirnside Park, winning by seven goals and will hope to translate its momentum into the weekend’s match-up. Park Orchards will need to stop North Ringwood’s sharpshooter Lauren Harris who has kicked 31 goals this season and could be the match-winner if granted too many opportunities in front of goal.

SOUTH DIVISION WOMEN’S The in-form Rowville Hawks will be looking for more of the same as it comes up against SBL Wolves for the second time this finals series. The minor premiers kept the Wolves goalless two weeks ago and will do everything it can to repeat this feat on the weekend. SBL, fresh off a hard-fought preliminary final victory against Ferntree Gully, will need leading goal-kicker Carmen Schuster (12 goals this year) to fire or risk being shut-out by the Hawks once more. Rowville will hope Rachel Binning can set the tone early after being named best-on in the semi-final, kicking a goal and seeing plenty of the footy in the Hawks’ three-goal win.

Montrose Flames will hope to continue their dream finals run after knocking off minor premiers Norwood Gold by two goals in a shock preliminary final upset. Upper Ferntree Gully Red will be careful not to underestimate the Flames and will be wary of the fact they only beat them by one goal the last time the two sides met in Round 10. Kristy-Lea Wilson is the one the Flames need to stop if they are to complete the dream finals run after she scored 29 for Upper Ferntree Gully last weekend.

NETBALL DIV5 Ringwood Black earned another crack at minor premiers Nunawading Lions after defeating Coldstream Blue by two goals in the preliminary final. Nunawading defeated Ringwood in the second semi-final by only four goals two weeks ago and will be wary of the threat the Redbacks pose. Ringwood will be quietly confident it can take the cake this Friday night after its competitive effort last time out and will lean on the offense of Michelle Hawker who scored 15 goals against Coldstream Blue a week ago. However, Nunawading remains favourite in this match-up having only suffered one loss to date.

NETBALL DIV6 er an undefeated regular season and a minor premiership, South Belgrave Red was beaten by Balwyn Tigers to the tune of three goals in its first final two weeks ago. After defeating Glen Waverley Hawks Yellow last weekend, South Belgrave has another chance to defeat Balwyn, this time however, there’s no tomorrow for the loser. Balwyn will be looking to pull off its second shock-upset in a row and do the unthinkable; defeat a previously undefeated side twice in a row. South Belgrave will give Balwyn’s Olivia Clear plenty of attention after she scored 16 goals in the semi-final, setting up the upset for her Tigers.

The Eastern Footballer - EFL SENIOR WOMEN’S/NETBALL DIV 4-7/VETERANS Finals 2019

NETBALL DIV7 The Basin Bears’ dream finals run is alive after defeating minor premiers Lilydale Yellow by five goals. After only just scraping into finals after losing twice as many games as it won, The Basin Bears have looked like a new team come finals, pulling off two monumental upsets. The Basin will meet Glen Waverley Black who remains the favourites in this contest, fresh off the week off after defeating Lilydale Yellow in its first final. Glen Waverley will look to shut down Kayla Nealy, who has galvanised The Basin’s dream run in finals scoring 16 and 22 goals in the two games respectively. Can the Bears pull of a grand final stunner, or will Glen Waverley put an end to their run? It was Glen Waverley that won the two sides’ most recent match-up by 10 goals.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - BJS INSURANCE VETERANS It’s a top-of-the-table clash in the BJS Insurance Veterans Grand Final as Scoresby and Coldstream will finally meet for the first time this season. Coldstream is the hot team after defeating South Croydon by almost 12 goals in its preliminary final, while Scoresby narrowly held on against a strong Noble Park outfit, winning by 14 points. Despite the strong effort from Coldstream last weekend, Scoresby goes in as the favourite having not yet lost this season – one more win and Scoresby can claim a perfect year. Christopher Adolph is Scoresby’s biggest forward threat with 13 goals for the year but Jonathan Flack is the most threatening forward across both teams with 39 majors for Coldstream thus far.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - DEAKIN UNI UNDER-18 GIRLS

Sunday 1 September, 2019 1pm, Vermont Recreation Reserve, Vermont

PREMIER DIVISION It’s a top-of-the-table clash in Premier Division with Blackburn and Donvale to meet in the big dance. Blackburn was victorious when the two sides last met a few weeks ago, winning comfortably by 31 points on its way to the minor premiership. Donvale needs to find an answer for Blackburn’s forward duo of Chloe O’Malley and Caitlin Bell; the pair kicked two goals each in the sides’ Round 14 match-up, wreaking havoc on Donvale’s backline. Blackburn can’t get complacent however, and will be sending its best back onto Eloise Chaston of Donvale; Chaston has kicked 19 goals in 14 matches this season and looms as a possible match-winner for the Magpies.

DIVISION 1 An old rivalry is renewed as North Ringwood faces Seville for the first time this finals series. North Ringwood was too strong for Seville last time these teams met, walking away 38-point victors back in Round 14. Seville comes in as a big underdog in this one, only just scraping through the finals thus far with two-point and four-point wins respectively, while North Ringwood has been doing it comfortably, winning its preliminary final by 72 points. Carli Forbes has kicked 23 goals for North Ringwood this season, including three last week – she’s the key in this one and must be stopped if Seville is any chance to win.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - GIRLS UNDER 16 PREMIER DIVISION Mount Evelyn will meet minor premier Blackburn in the Premier Division grand final this weekend. Blackburn took the four points when the two sides last met, winning by 21 points all the way back in Round 9, with two goals from Neve Coghlan. Both sides are in peak form coming off comfortable preliminary finals; Blackburn dispatched of Vermont by 40 points – keeping the Eagles goalless – while Mount Evelyn defeated third-placed Montrose by seven goals. Casey McConchie is Mount Evelyn’s best in front of goal with 14 this year, while at the other end, Bethany Fielding has been stellar for Blackburn this season, kicking 30 majors.

DIVISION 1 First-placed Wantirna South Knights will meet second-placed Mooroolbark for the first time since Round 12 when the Knights defeated the Mustangs by 20 points at home. Both sides had a strong start to their respective finals campaigns, keeping the opposition scoreless in each of their semi-finals. Mooroolbark however, had a hard-fought preliminary final against The Basin, winning by a solitary goal, meanwhile Wantirna South Knights ran over North Ringwood by five goals. Mooroolbark will need its forward duo of Jessica Kearton (16 goals this year) and Mikaela Obrien (14 goals this year) to fire if it is to upset the minor premiers.

DIVISION 2 Boronia/Knox and Norwood are set for a big clash this weekend in what looms to be one of the toughest contests across this weekend’s grand finals. The last time these two sides met was Round 11 where Boronia/Knox smashed the minor premiers by 11 goals, however Norwood will be sure to rectify that effort and finished minor premier for a reason – it doesn’t lie down easily, so expect an almighty clash. Holly Gibson could be the difference in this one; the Boronia/Knox forward has 31 goals for the season including four in last week’s preliminary final against Waverley Blues.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - UNDER 14

Sunday 1 September, 2019 10.10am, Vermont Recreation Reserve, Vermont

PREMIER DIVISION SBL Wolves Black is the red-hot favourite in its match-up against Montrose. The minor premier is yet to concede a single point this finals series and has been playing a brand of football a league above the rest of the competition. Montrose will give itself a chance after its upset win over second-placed Rowville by six goals but defeating the Wolves is a very tall task. The last outing between the two sides came in Round 14 when SBL defeated Montrose by 17 points. Hayley Evans has kicked seven goals in two finals outings including a four-goal haul last week and will be a headache for Montrose to stop.

DIVISION 1 Mooroolbark and Glen Waverley Rovers will meet for just the second time this year and the first time since Round 5 where Mooroolbark walked away 17-point victors. A lot has changed since but these two sides were the benchmarks of the competition for almost the entire season so it’s only fitting they meet in the big dance. The Mustangs are coming off a nearpreliminary final-loss to East Ringwood, escaping with a nail-biting three-point win, while the Rovers defeated Ferntree Gully by only two goals. Anything could happen in one of the more exciting match-ups across the Eastern Region Girls this weekend. Briar Keyser hit the scoreboard for the Mustangs last week and will look to continue her form in the final match of the year.

Minor premier Bayswater faces second-placed Heathmont in the Division 2 decider. The two sides’ most recent clash came in Round 11 this year; Bayswater was victorious by 28 points in a convincing win over its upcoming opponent and will be confident coming into the matchup. Heathmont had a strong preliminary final performance, winning by 67 points over Upper Ferntree Gully, but Bayswater is the team to beat after only conceding two points through two games this finals series. Bayswater’s Torey Burns has kicked 23 goals this year and looms as a match-up that Heathmont must win if it’s going to pull off an upset. TEAM

The Eastern Footballer - EFL JUNIOR GIRLS Finals 2019

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - UNDER 12 PREMIER DIVISION The Premier Division’s biggest rivals clash once more as Blackburn meets The Basin and if the Round 11 one-point classic is anything to go by, this one will go down to the wire. It was Blackburn that won in Round 11 by a single point and looks the likeliest winner after a strong effort last weekend, defeating Ferntree Gully by 16 points. The Basin however, narrowly defeated second-placed Heathmont by two-points as it got on the right end of a close one. Blackburn’s Jemima Fulton is in ripping form after kicking three of her side’s five goals last week and will be a potential match-winner for her side unless The Basin can stop her.

DIVISION 1 Rowville Hawks face Wantirna South in a surprise Division 1 match-up. After finishing fourth, Rowville Hawks has gone up a gear, winning its elimination final by two points only to destroy cross-town rivals Rowville Knights by 35 without conceding a point. Wantirna South is yet to concede a point this finals series, winning its preliminary final by 30 points, yet the Devils will be wary of this match-up after the giant-killer Hawks defeated them by three goals back in Round 11. The minor premiers will look to leading goal-kicker Scout Semple (12) as the main target up forward, while the Hawks will do all they can to stop her and make their potential fairy-tale grand final victory a reality.

DIVISION 2 Blackburn takes on Upper Ferntree Gully and will hope for a better performance against the minor premier than back in Round 11 when Upper Ferntree Gully defeated it 69 – 0, holding Blackburn scoreless. Both sides are in strong form and didn’t concede a single goal in their respective preliminary finals thanks to amazing efforts from the team’s respective defences. Don’t expect low scoring this week however, as marquee Gully forward Lucy Prendergast will look to improve on her season goal tally of 24 while Blackburn star Ava Loverso will hope to back-up her two goal performance from last week at the other end.

• At no stage during extra time will coaches be permitted to address players.

EFL CODE OF CONDUCT The EFL’s Code of Conduct is designed to help improve the environment for players and supporters. It’s important that everyone involved on match days is familiar with what is considered to be ‘reasonable behaviour’.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS/ GUARDIANS AND SPECTATORS • Remember that children play football for fun – they are not playing for your entertainment, nor are they miniature professionals. • Encourage players to participate, do not force them. • Focus on the players’ efforts – never ridicule or yell at a player for making a mistake or losing the game. • Remember that players learn best from example. 44

• Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not harassing or using foul language to umpires, players, coaches, or other spectators. • Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players.

WE SALUTE OUR SPONSORS! Sponsorship plays a vital role in sport at all levels and without it the league would not be as successful as it is today. The income generated from sponsorship reduces the financial burden on competing clubs and keeps the cost of football in the EFL within reach of all supporters.
