FOOTBALLER SEPTEMBER 6 - 8

DIV. 3/DIV. 4/ NETBALL GRAND FINALS 2019

INSIDE THE EFL Division 3 & 4 Grand Final Weekend Five grand finals up for grabs, two teams will taste premiership glory this weekend. Each side will have the opportunity to create their own history and write their own story. Reputations will be enhanced, and the recollections and stories will grow legs as the reunions take place. The Eastland Senior Men’s Grand Final Series kicks off with Division 3 being played on Saturday at Jubilee Park. The undefeated South Belgrave will be well-represented on Saturday with all three teams playing. In the seniors, the Saints take on the Waverley Blues who have come from fourth position on the ladder, scraping through the elimination final with an overtime win against Warrandyte. South Belgrave has been dominant all season, and Waverley Blues come in with some real momentum so it will be interesting to see how the day unfolds. Waverley Blues last tasted grand final success at Jubilee Park in 2008. Can they cause an upset? Or will the all-conquering South Belgrave march into Division 2 with a perfect season? On Sunday at Scoresby Recreation Reserve, ladder-leader East Burwood takes on Fairpark in the Eastland Division 4 Grand Final. The teams met twice during the season with East Burwood winning a close game in Round 9; Fairpark turned the tables at home in Round 18 and won comfortably. The ground size at Scoresby Recreation Reserve is larger than Fair Park Reserve but smaller than East Burwood Reserve so the team that adapts best will come out on top. Will it be the bigger bodies of Fairpark or the running midfield of East Burwood that wins on Sunday? In Division 2, its preliminary final weekend with reigning premier Boronia taking on Mitcham fresh from an overtime win at East Burwood Reserve on Saturday. This should be a great contest with the winner earning the right to face Ringwood in the grand final. In the Division 1 preliminary final, Croydon takes on Park Orchards at Tomore Reserve. Croydon just missed a spot in the grand final following a narrow loss to Doncaster East whilst Park Orchards had a strong win over Lilydale in the elimination game. In Premier Division, reigning premier Vermont faces Balwyn at Baywater Oval on Saturday, with the winner progressing to the grand final. Vermont has had the week’s break and Balwyn are coming off an impressive win over Blackburn. Balwyn was on from the outset and able to play the game on its terms. The tactical battle between Rodney Eade and Harmit Singh will be very interesting on Saturday. Sunday’s Deakin Uni Eastern Region Women’s grand finals were a fantastic culmination of a great season.

In three years, the women’s competition has grown to five divisions which includes an Outer East division. The crowds that attended both venues across grand final day suggest that female football is thriving and will only continue to grow in the future. The support that these young women received was amazing on the day. Our women’s Premier Division and Division 1 grand finals were held at Lilydale with South Croydon defeating The Basin by two points to claim the Division 1 premiership. In the Premier Division grand final, Chirnside Park defeated the Whitehorse Suns to claim the premiership. Both teams are new to the competition and have assisted in taking the Premier competition to a new level. Our women’s North and South grand finals were held at Mulgrave Reserve, a newly-resurfaced ground in amazing condition. In the North Division, North Ringwood defeated Park Orchards to claim the premiership in its first season. In the South Division, Rowville defeated the South Belgrave Lysterfield Wolves by seven points. All four teams that participated were new to the competition this year. Congratulations to all sides that made the grand final and we look forward to seeing you all back playing next season. Watching a North Ringwood player drive out of the car park with the cup hanging out of the sunroof, tooting the horn captured the jubilation of the moment perfectly. The BJS Insurance Veterans Grand Final showed how footy clubs can be a great place to bring families together. Seeing the kids at the game watching their parents play will no doubt inspire the next generation of footballers. In a tight tussle, Coldstream broke away late in the game kicking five last quarter goals to win by 22 points over reigning premier Scoresby. Coldstream won the BJS Veterans premiership in their first season, with Johnny Pignataro being named best on ground. Our Bendigo Bank Netball Premier Division, Division 1, 2 and 3 grand finals take place this Friday night at HE Parker Netball Centre. Last week it was great to see so much club support at the Division 4, 5, 6 and 7 grand finals. Upper Ferntree Gully, Nunawading, South Belgrave and The Basin all victorious on the night to capturing respective premierships. To everyone involved in EFL footy and netball this season, thanks for your contribution and I hope to see you back next year. And to those still in contention for 2019, best of luck for the next few weeks. Remember to tune in to our Division 3 and 4 grand finals on 1377 SEN+ on Saturday and Sunday or watch the live stream via the EFL website.

The Eastern Footballer - DIVISION 3/DIVISION 4/ NETBALL PREMIER DIVISION – DIVISION 3 Finals 2019

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - DIVISION 3 DIVISION 3 - SENIORS South Belgrave is looking to complete the perfect season and go undefeated throughout the year, but hoping to crash the minor premier’s party is a plucky Waverley Blues outfit. After finishing fourth, the Blues have enjoyed an incredible finals run, defeating Warrandyte in extra-time before running over the top of Ferntree Gully in last weekend’s preliminary final. The last time the two sides clashed was in Round 17 where South Belgrave won by a convincing nine-goal margin. The Saints are the hot favourites in this one, but anything can happen in the big dance. The Waverley Blues will need another big performance from Ben Turner if they’re any hope to win; Turner kicked two majors last weekend and saw plenty of the footy.

DIVISION 3 - RESERVES Donvale is enjoying a stellar finals run after an up-and-down season, defeating Ferntree Gully in last week’s preliminary final by 24 points. In its way is the powerhouse club of Division 3, South Belgrave, looking to win each of the seniors, reserves and under-19s grand finals. Donvale will need to stop powerhouse South Belgrave forward Alex Bakens if it’s going to win. Bakens has kicked 34 goals for the year and poses the biggest threat in front of goal. The last time these sides clashed was in Round 12 where South Belgrave narrowly escaped with a three-point victory over the Magpies – anything could happen this weekend.

DIVISION 3 - UNDER -19s South Belgrave will get another crack at Warrandyte after the minor premier defeated it two weeks ago by 22 points in the second semi-final. Warrandyte will hope for a repeat of its strong effort in that match-up and secure itself premiership glory after being the best side across the division all year. As for South Belgrave, if it’s going to pull off the upset, it will need to stop dangerous Warrandyte forward, Quinn Clark. Clark had three goals two weeks ago in the semi-final and if he gets the same opportunities this weekend then the minor premier will likely come out on top.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - NETBALL PREMIER DIVISION WANTIRNA SOUTH DEVILS V EAST BURWOOD BLACK Undefeated throughout the regular season although drew once with the East Burwood Blacks, the Wantirna South Devils are hoping to make it a perfect season when they take on East Burwood in their final clash. With Lauren Woodgate possessing an astonishing 450 goals for the year, the Blacks will need to bring the determination they brought in the draw to lock down and take home the silverware.

DIVISION 1 KNOX V SCORESBY SWOOPERS The Scoresby Swoopers’ finals dreams are well and truly alive after winning in straight sets to Kilsyth Cougars, to take on Knox this week in the Division 1 grand final. With Knox’s nearperfect season, the minor premier will be quietly confident heading into the game this Friday with Jennifer Gardner and Jessica Teunissen scoring over 350 goals between them for the season. Can Knox pull off a dream season, or will the Swoopers put an end to their run?

DIVISION 2 CROYDON BLUES V NORTH RINGWOOD WHITE The last time these teams faced-off, Croydon Blues kept North Ringwood White scoreless. Now finals time, the Blues defeated Mulgrave Red 39 to 29 to play North Ringwood White who defeated Scoresby Shooters 24 to 40. The Blues will be keeping a watchful eye on Emily Salmon, who scored 39 goals in the North Ringwood White’s last game against Mulgrave.

DIVISION 3 CROYDON NORTH MLOC V FERNTREE GULLY EAGLES It’s 1 v. 4 with Croydon North MLOC, the minor premier, taking on Ferntree Gully Eagles who finished fourth for the season. Upon the pair’s last meeting, it was an upset as the Eagles took the game 28 to 16. Having won their last nine straight, the Eagles will be hoping to make their grand final dream a reality, though will need to give Croydon North MLOC’s Paris Saunders plenty of attention as she scored 20 against Heathmont White last week to take her team into the decider.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - DIVISION 4 DIVISION 4 SENIORS Fairpark’s dream finals run continued after the Lions obliterated Coldstream in the preliminary final. Fairpark is arguably the form-team of the competition after winning its first final in 22 years two weeks ago against Surrey Park, and a fairy-tale ending beckons if it can run over the top of minor premier, East Burwood. After only losing just twice all season, the Rams will be confident having won their way through to the big dance with a convincing 45-point win over Coldstream a fortnight ago, ensuring the week off. However, they were beaten by Fairpark in the final round of the home and away season by 28 points, so will be wary of the threat posed by the Lions. Forward Ronnie McKendry will be the key for Fairpark after kicking nine goals in his last five quarters of football and looms as the potential match-winner, while East Burwood’s Adrian Gileno is coming off a seven-goal haul in the semi-final.

DIVISION 4 RESERVES East Burwood is yet to lose a game in the reserves this year and it is heavy favourite to complete the perfect season. Surrey Park stands in the Rams’ way and will need to bring its best football if it’s going to stand a chance against the powerhouse that is East Burwood. It will be Surrey Park’s second opportunity to knock off the minor premier this finals series, after losing by 15 points two weeks ago in what was a competitive match-up. Expect East Burwood’s Dylan Agnew to have a big day, the superstar forward has kicked 46 goals this year and will hope to reach the half-century mark this Sunday.

DIVISION 4 UNDER-19s Minor premier Silvan is coming in fresh from the week off and will attempt to replicate its performance against Forest Hill from two weeks ago, where it won by three goals. Forest Hill has found some form after defeating Kilsyth by 22 points last week and shouldn’t be taken lightly; it is certainly capable of spoiling the minor premier’s party. Ben Rudd will have to fire for the Zebras if they are going to take the cake this weekend; he has 41 goals this year and won’t be easy for Silvan to contain.
