DIVISION 2 GRAND FINAL DONCASTER EAST V LILYDALE

DIVISION 3 GRAND FINAL RINGWOOD V BORONIA

INSIDE THE EFL Inside the EFL As I sit down to pen my final Inside the EFL column for 2018, it’s a good time for reflection on the year that has gone by so quickly and what is in store for us over the next two weeks. With the grand finals that are remaining, each side will have the opportunity to create their own history and write their Phil Murton own story. Reputations will be EFL Chief Executive Officer enhanced, and acts written into the folklore of clubs with already storied histories. It’s why finals, grand finals in particular, are so great to be involved in. I expect it to be close across the board. So far across the senior and junior finals this year we’ve had 13 draw/extra time, with many other games either decided very late in the piece or even after the siren. If there’s one thing that stands out to me when you look at the senior teams remaining, it’s the coaches. Harmit Singh, Luke McCormick and Brendan Allen in Division 1. Steve Buckle and Ben Neagle in Div 2, and Brett Rowe and Matt Clark in Division 3. Smart, composed, always learning. It helps when you’ve got good cattle, but the coach and their behaviour impact so much on and off the field at a club. Knowing a few of these guys pretty well, they are even better people than they are coaches. In my years of watching EFL footy, I’ve regularly observed that you can tell a fair bit about the quality of a coach by the amount of noise they make on the sidelines. Composure is as infectious on a team and club in a positive way as being loud, abusive and cantankerous can be in a negative way. If as a coach you’re yelling at the decision of an umpire, then in my opinion you’re not focussed on the game and looking at how you can keep ahead or make up ground. With strategy playing a more crucial role every year in our game, the contest in the coaches’ boxes will be of huge interest over the coming weeks. Sunday’s Deakin Uni Eastern Region Women’s grand finals were a fantastic culmination of a great season. Talk to anyone from clubs who has been involved in a senior women’s team at their club and they’ll tell you it’s been a wonderful experience. Two years into the growing women’s competition and I wholeheartedly echo their sentiments. The spirit in which the games have been played, the cooperation of all involved off-field, it has been a genuine collaboration from everyone involved.

Two grand finals that went down to the wire in front of big and vocal crowds, I’ve no doubt anyone who was present and those who played will know women’s footy is only going to continue to grow and thrive. Congratulations to Donvale and Vermont for their grand final victories, and also to Mount Evelyn and Blackburn who were gallant in defeat. The BJS Insurance Veterans grand final also showed how footy clubs can be a great place to bring families together. Seeing the kids form a guard of honour getting high fives as their dads came up to receive their premiership medals, it hopefully inspires and encourages them to play our great game also. In a dour affair, congratulations to Whitehorse Pioneers who came home strong to see off a gallant Glen Waverly Hawks in the Division 4 grand final. In the reserves, EFL photographer Davis Harrigan perfectly captured the moment with a great photo of East Burwood stalwart and captain Craig O’Malley on the final siren. It was an image that will be hard to beat as the best photo in local footy this year, given the occasion and the contribution of Craig to East Burwood in difficult times. And to have a Whitehorse/South Croydon combined team win the under-19s, with great support from both clubs, shows that in the debate about under-19s, it’s crucial we consider the players first, and sort out logistics later. A big thank-you to all those who have umpired throughout season 2018. It’s an important and often thankless task. This year the umpires have looked terrific in their new uniforms and we thank new League sponsor carsales for its support of umpiring. And to those who have umpired finals, from what I’ve observed so far you have done a terrific job. But the job isn’t finished yet and as players are aiming to, you need to finish the year on a positive note by performing your task admirably. As the competition has grown, so too has our demand for umpires and finding competent umpires for every game continues to be a challenge in all disciplines. To anyone out there who has ever thought of giving umpiring a go, I’d encourage you to do so. Between junior boys or girls, senior men’s, senior women’s and even netball, there’s a wide variety of opportunities. To everyone involved in EFL footy and netball this season, thanks for your contribution and I hope to see you back next year. And to those still in contention for 2018, best of luck for what should be an exciting final 12 games.

PIONEERS BOLT TO PREMIERSHIP By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

T

HE Whitehorse Pioneers produced a stunning second-half display to claim the 2018 Division 4 premiership last Saturday afternoon, defeating the Glen Waverley Hawks by 16 points at Walker Park.

The 6.12 (48) to 4.8 (32) victory looked unlikely at half-time as the Pioneers failed to register a major in the opening half, before piling on six goals to one in the second half, including four goals to none in the final quarter. The Hawks dominated most of the play in the opening term but failed to capitalise, leading by a mere 12 points at quarter time off the back of majors to Ben Sullivan and Adam Amin.

The second term saw an inaccurate Pioneers outfit waste several opportunities in front of goal, kicking 0.3, as the Hawks took a 17-point lead into the main break as Adam Amin registered his second major at the 18-minute-mark with an opportunistic snap around the body – the only goal for the quarter. The premiership cup looked set to head to Central Reserve 10 minutes into the third quarter as Evan Pickering made no mistake for the Hawks from a set-shot deep in the pocket, extending his side’s lead to 21 points over the goalless Pioneers – before Mitch Ward pounced on a loose ball inside 50 to kick his side’s first for the day at the 16-minute-mark. Charlie Thorn found himself in space in attack 10 minutes later as he strolled into an open goal to cut the margin to six points at the 26-minute-mark off the back of brilliant rebounding work from defensive 50 by Michael McDougall and Mitch Ward swooping on a contested ball on the wing to set up the goal. With seven points separating the sides at the final change, the Hawks missed three scoring opportunities to the five-minute-mark of the last term, registering 0.3 before Andrew Padbury took his goal tally to 58 for the season when he kicked truly from 45 metres out to draw the Pioneers within three points eight minutes in.

8

The Eastern Footballer

The sides continued the stoppage-riddled arm-wrestle before Damian Bertacco roved a Parthenides hit-out in the pocket to set up Matthew Mariani who put the Pioneers in front by two points for the first time midway through the last term. Bertacco continued his brilliance with the game still in the balance, kicking the sealer as 23 minutes ticked over after a desperate attempt at goal 15 metres out sailed through – followed up by Aleksander Kumurdian 90 seconds later to increase the Pioneers’ lead to 16 points securing the club’s first flag since 2007. Whitehorse live-wire Mitch Ward, who was crucial to the game turning in the third term, praised his side’s pe persistence in breaking down the Hawks’ st structures. “T “They structure up so well and sometimes it takes half a game to actually break it ap apart,” Ward said. “W “We started running and moving it fo forward, we got the game open and e eventually got it on our terms. ““Our first half was very stagnant and it p probably played into their hands. ““They (Glen Waverley Hawks) don’t give yyou a lot of time and space, so you’ve really got to make that yourself and we d did that in the third quarter.” The Pioneers’ 2018 leading goal-kicker Andrew Padbury was in a state of disbelief after the siren. “It was unreal – I don’t think any of us could find our kicking boots in the first half to be honest,” Padbury said. “To ki kick zero goals in the first half is a bit silly, but it was one of tthose days – it was unreal.” Padbury also paid tribute to his 2017 mentors, along with senior coach Jamie Carpenter, who played in the club’s last senior flag 11 years ago before the club faced a finals drought between 2010-2016. “A bit of credit goes to the fellas last year – (2017 senior coach) Derek Shaw and (2017 assistant coach) Andrew Beever who really set this up – it’s probably a two-year build,” he said. “It was a tough eight or nine years.” Damian Bertacco took the best-on-ground honours, claiming the Frank Bibby/Blue Ribbon Medal. DEAKIN UNI WOMEN’S REVIEW By: Matt Fotia Twitter: @fotiamatt

V

ERMONT withstood a late Mount Evelyn comeback at the Lilydale Sports Oval to come away with the Deakin University Eastern Region Women’s Division 1 premiership on Sunday, winning by eight points in a thrilling encounter.

The Eagles had led all day before the Rovers sparked the game to life, kicking the first two goals of the final term, and at the 16-minute mark, the game seemed destined for extra time, the scores locked at 33 apiece. But the Eagles steadied to come away with the victory and were deserved winners, defeating the minor premiers in both finals clashes, and having eight more scoring shots throughout the decider. The Eagles had jumped out to an early lead at quarter time, holding the usually free-flowing Rovers to just the one behind in the opening quarter and if not for some inaccurate kicking, the Eagles, who shot 2.3 in the first, could have put the game to bed there and then, but that would be the story of the day, their inaccuracy keeping Mount Evelyn interested. However as is often the case at the Lilydale Sports Oval, a scoring end does develop. In a mirror image to the first term, Mount Evelyn kept Vermont to just one behind, kicking two goals itself. Crucially however, they were only able to manage two behinds, giving the Eagles the half time lead. It was evident that whoever could score more heavily to the goal barren end would leave the ground as the victors. At this stage the two sides were locked at one behind each. Mount Evelyn was able to kick a goal to the non-scoring end, but wasn’t able to contain the Eagles who replicated their opening term, kicking two goals and three behinds once again. With a deficit of just 10 points, the Rovers would have no doubt fancied their chances of a come-from-behind victory. But it was seemed it was purely their second half efficiency that had kept them in the contest. The Rovers managed just three scoring shots in the second half and to their credit converted them all. On the other hand the Eagles managed 10 scoring shots, kicking three goals seven. I doubt the Eagles fans will care much about semantics however, those extra seven behinds ended up being the difference, and no one will look back at the end of the week annoyed at their failure to win by more, victory often clouds our analysis. It would have been a different story late in the final term though. The Rovers and Eagles both had two scoring shots to the 16-minute mark, the Rovers kicking truly and the Eagles’ wayward kicking leaving the possibility of extra time, much worse defeat well and truly on the forefront of everyone’s minds. With a sense of justice however the Eagles managed to steady and kick away. They still managed to keep everyone interested until the final siren however, converting just one of their three scoring shots after the 16th minute. The forward lines of each side were the opposites. The Rovers clearly lacking a focal point to give them an easy out going forward, had to work hard for their chances, with five individual goal kickers. Vermont on the other hand had just two goal kickers, but both put in arguably their best performances for the year. Jess Elder kicked three goals and appeared in the Vermont best for just the third occasion for 2018, whilst Tennille Nash popped up with the other two goals. To rub salt into the Mount Evelyn wound, it was Nash’s first appearance on the goal kickers list since July.

12

The Eastern Footballer

Vermont’s runaway winner of best player in finals produced another stellar performance. Nicola Junginger was the Eagles’ best in their second semi-final victory a fortnight ago, and she showed her love for playing the Rovers. This time she finished second-best, behind only the inspirational Nash. Junginger’s name would no doubt send shivers down the spine of the Rovers players. Three appearances against them and each and every time she’s got the better of them. Despite the tight result and enthralling final minutes, the winners deserved their medals definitively. If only they had their kicking boots on, they could’ve soaked it up a little bit longer. The crowd at the Lilydale Sports Oval would surely have been sick of the constant palpitations and goosebumps they encountered on Sunday afternoon. The curtain-raiser to the thriller that was the Division 1 decider was an equally, if not more thrilling, Division 2 play-off. Donvale walked away victorious, winning the clash by four points, overturning a three-point deficit at the final change in a low scoring game that saw both sides only manage three goals each for the entire game. The tale of the tape however is Blackburn’s bookended performance which saw it kept goalless in the first and final quarters. Donvale controlled the game for the first term with an incredible, solid defensive opening, keeping Blackburn not only goalless but scoreless. Donvale itself was not free-flowing, but was able to hit the scoreboard, kicking 1.2 to lead by eight points at the first break. Blackburn kept the second quarter at a stalemate as both sides managed one goal apiece, maintaining the eight-point margin at the main break. With just seven scoring shots between the two sides after 40 minutes, it was already evident that if one player could take the game by the scruff of the neck, they would drag their side across the line. Blackburn was able to turn the tables of its horror first term, keeping Donvale to just three behinds in the third term, as the Panthers kicked two majors themselves. Since the first term Blackburn had been the much better side, much more efficient inside forward 50, kicking 3.3 to Donvale’s 1.4, and headed into the final change with a three-point lead. The Burners seemed destined to show that you don’t need to play four quarters of football to win a game. Unfortunately for the Blackburn faithful, you do need to play at least three, and that’s what Donvale did. The Magpies kicked 1.3 in the final term to Blackburn’s two behinds, the Burners second goalless term for the game. The game, rather than a battle of firepower, was an encounter of defensive structures, with the side who could keep the opposition at bay the longest the eventual winners. Blackburn managed just two behinds in the first and final terms, Donvale’s goalless quarter was the better of the three, scoring an enviable three behinds. Donvale’s goals came from the boot of returning skipper Tina Liu, goal-sneak Jess Crundall and spearhead Monica Latino, whose 51st goal for the season will no doubt be her favourite. Alannah Antonellos continued her love affair with Blackburn, by finishing best afield in a premiership win. It may not have been how they envisaged it as their heads hit the pillow on Saturday night, but Donvale got what it deserved, the premiership cup. For Blackburn, the loss will fuel its pre-season when it comes back around, but for now it will just have to bubble under the surface, ready to explode in 2019.

LILYDALE: The weather gods were kind to us out at Tormore last week providing us with a great day for a shot at a grand final spot. We started well with Harv’s and Willow sharing the spoils early, only for UFTG to hit back. A steady stream of footy inside fifty saw us produce a strong first quarter with not many behinds. The second proved an arm wrestle with neither side willing to buckle two goals apiece saw us enter the long break 16 points in front. After the break UFTG came out full of run and really took it up to our boys. A late surge by them in red time saw UFTG with all the momentum late and a three point advantage at three quarter time. The first goal of the last quarter saw UFTG skip 8 points in front and that’s when the realisation of us missing a grand final ignited us. Six goals to two for the quarter saw us run out 22 point winners in what was a great team effort. There were many heroic efforts on the day, but none more so than Zak Kennedy’s effort to save a certain goal in the third quarter. Inspirational acts of courage like that instil belief in the group and make us more resilient.

We will embrace the challenge of a Grand Final today.

GO FALCONS!

BORONIA: What a week to be a Hawka…… All 3 teams travelled to East Burwood as underdogs. By 4.30 all 3 teams were through to the big dance. The Under 19s were involved in a close game with Heathmont and won with what was the last score of the game. The D squad also played Heathmont and showed what a young, determined, hard tackling side can achieve and ran out winners by about 7 goals. The senior team played Scoresby who they had already come across during the final series. Great reversal in the result again by a team that really wanted to progress through to a Grand final. A strong 4 quarter effort to record a great win. To have all 3 teams in the grand final is a great result for our young club. A big shout out to our coaches Clarky, Brocky and Fletch and all the assistants for a sensational job with the boys all year. Good luck today. To all the players who have represented the club during the year. Well Done. Whatever the result enjoy the experience. To all supporters remember the social rooms will be open from 6 so come down and celebrate what has been an outstanding season and hopefully 3 premierships. Go Hawka

DIVISION 1 SENIORS

2:10PM - BAYSWATER OVAL - BAYSWATER

SOUTH CROYDON: Last Saturday morning the combined Sth Croydon/Whitehorse team led all day in a great game against Surrey Park to take out the Div. 4 U19 Grand Final. Congratulations to all involved in making this year happen – an excellent initiative to keep boys from both clubs playing and what a terrific outcome! In the afternoon, at Bayswater, the senior team led the Eagles on the scoreboard in the first half, but it’s fair to say they had much of the play and if not for inaccuracy, they could have led at the main break. The second half was not memorable, as Vermont put on a precision display. The result not great - we must continue to learn, adapt and improve after games like this one. Sunday the reserves started slowly against Doncaster, but dominated the final three quarters on the vast expanses of Central Reserve, for a comfortable win and a well-deserved prelim start. Later that day the veterans, gave their all but it wasn’t quite enough to get over the line against Scoresby in the Vets GF. A fantastic season for the group. Today massive challenges for our two senior teams against Blackburn in preliminary finals. Hopefully the boys have recovered and prepared well and put up strong showings, with the prize being Grand Final berths! Good luck to all players involved – dare to dream! Massive thanks to all sponsors and coterie group members for your support again this season. Social SCFC Presentation Night - 12th October at Cheong Park 7pm start. $65 per head for 3 course meal. Drinks at bar prices. Contact Cathy 0403 122 966 or Michelle 0409 929 155 to book. Check the Facebook page or newsletter for full details – pre-payment is required. Go doggies!

BLACKBURN: What a huge weekend of finals footy with our four senior teams all playing. The Under 19’s kicked off the weekend with a fantastic hard fought 2 point win over arch rival and nemesis Vermont. Budgy was dominant and with 3 goals was clearly our best and was ably supported by AB, Jacko and Charlie Oglethorpe. This win gives the boys a week off to prepare for the Grand Final. Unfortunately the Development team could not replicate the performance of the Futures and went down by 4 points in another arm wrestle with the Eagles. These two teams have a well-earned respect for each other and have not been separated by more than a few points over the last couple of years. However, we will have to get over South Croydon this week to earn another crack at Vermont in the big dance. Better players were Banksy, Hammo, Tinker and Lochie Adey with 3 goals. In the early game at Lilydale on Sunday our womens team took on Donvale in the Div 2 Grand Final. The game was entertaining and we definitely had our chances including the last shot at goal which only just missed. Unfortunately time ran out and the gallant burners went down by only 4 points. What a fantastic finish to our inaugural season of womens footy and congrats must go to all the girls, coaches and support staff. From Lilydale we then travelled out to Waverley for the cut throat 1st Semi against Doncaster. Both teams struggled early for clean possession as the pressure around the ball from both sides was outstanding. It wasn’t pretty football but nobody expected it to be. At half time we had our nose in front, but like last week we came out firing with a 7 goal to 1 premiership quarter where our pace and precision with the footy thrilled the large crowd in red. It was a great win against the Sharks which now gets us a date with South Croydon this week in the Preliminary Final in almost a carbon copy of last year. Let’s hope we can go one step further and earn the right for a crack at minor premiers Vermont. This Sunday (tomorrow) we have our vote count for the U19’s, Development and Senior teams commencing at 12 noon. A huge day is planned, with the Panther Punters Club EOY break up to add to the excitement. The Club will put on a free lunch and snacks throughout the day (for senior players, 2018 BFC financial members and PPC members - otherwise $10), and there will be door entry prizes drawn every hour. Drinks at bar prices, the VFL Prelim final on the box, and the major raffle for the Bali trip will be drawn. All supporters are welcome to join in this big day. Don’t forget the Grand Final Eve lunch on Friday 28th September, James has done it again - another quality guest speaker in Geelong’s Jimmy Bartel, and a quality meal being supplied by club sponsor Bucatinis - throw in 3 hours of free drinks, and the $100 door entry fee is a bargain. Book your table or seat with James MacLeod - james@tobinbrothers.com.au or ring 0417 519782 but get in fast as numbers are limited. The lunch will conclude with the infamous duck-drop, something not to be missed. Ducks are now on sale from Mike McCoy at $50 each or 3 for $120. GO BURNERS #WeAreBlackburn#OneClub

EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) - WILD CARD vs GIPPSLAND POWER WESTERN JETS - 12.12.84 EASTERN RANGES - 7.4.46 Season 2018 has come to an end for Eastern Ranges, after a 38-point loss in the Wild Card match against Western Jets. The day began with a heart-warming pregame address with the players’ parents present in the rooms on Fathers’ Day. It served as a reminder that at the end of the day, win or loss, their parents are there supporting their dreams. Once the game got underway, our boys took the fight to the Jets. After conceding the first goal of the game we then kicked the next four to open up a 10-point lead at quarter time. The second quarter was essentially a stalemate for much of the 25 minutes, with the only goal of the term going to Ben Hickleton for his third of the day. With a 16-point half time lead, there was reason to be confident going into the second

www.efl.org.au

half, if the same level of performance could be maintained. The Jets had other ideas, kicking nine goals to one in the second half. The momentum we had in the first half had quickly evaporated and by the fourth term it was a matter of salvaging the final margin. The boys were left to rue the same issue that has been common throughout this season - their best footy has been good enough to seriously challenge contending teams, but too many small lapses have allowed the opposition to get back into the game and win. The day’s best players were Mihaele Zalac, Kye Quirk, Adrian Kalcovski, Lachlan Stapleton, Joel Nathan, and Joel Burleigh. Goalkickers were: B Hickleton 3 D Brereton J Duff y A Kalcovski J Kritopoulos

WE SALUTE OUR SPONSORS! Sponsorship plays a vital role in sport at all levels and without it the league would not be as successful as it is today. The income generated from sponsorship reduces the financial burden on competing clubs and keeps the cost of football in the EFL within reach of all supporters.
