DIVISION 1/DIVISION 2 GRAND FINALS 2019

SEPTEMBER 14 - 15

Doncaster East v Croydon

Ringwood v Mitcham

INSIDE THE EFL Division 1 & 2 Grand Final Weekend Three Eastland senior men’s premierships still up for grabs, two teams will taste premiership glory this weekend. Each side will be looking to enter their club history books as a premiership team and player. A feat that creates a special bond between players, coaches and officials. The Eastland senior men’s grand final series kicks off with Division 1 being played on Saturday at Tormore Reserve. Ladder-leader and last year’s premier Doncaster East takes on Croydon in the battle of the two best teams in season 2019. These two sides have met three times throughout the season with Doncaster East winning by 98 points at home, Croydon reversing the result with a seven-point win at home and in the second semi-fina, Doncaster East after trailing all day hit the front late to win by four points. Tormore Reserve can be a tricky ground to play so the team that best handles the conditions will likely hold the cup aloft come 4.40pm on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday at East Burwood Reserve, Ringwood takes on Mitcham who knocked reigning premier Boronia and ladder-leader out of the finals last week. This is shaping as an interesting game as Ringwood’s only loss last year came in the grand final - this season it comes in after finishing second with a record of 12 wins, five losses and a draw. Mitcham who went into Division 2 following the divisional restructure, finished the season on 12 wins and six losses. The two teams have played on three occasions with Mitcham winning by 55 points and Ringwood winning twice by 11 points and 47 points in Round 16. Both teams have scored heavily this season but have also conceded high points against, so this game will be won or lost in the midfield. In Premier Division, Balwyn takes on Blackburn, a rematch from two weeks ago where Balwyn controlled the game early and never allowed Blackburn into the contest. With the inclusion of

some extra leg-speed, Blackburn accounted for South Croydon at Central Reserve on Sunday. This should be a great game with the winner set to take on reigning premier Vermont in the grand final next week. Congratulations to our Division 3 premier South Belgrave who won by 57 points over the Waverley Blues at Jubilee Park capping a massive season and day for the club. Earlier in the day, the South Belgrave under-19s defeated Warrandyte and the reserves beat Donvale to clean-sweep the division and win all three premierships - an amazing feat. In Division 4, Fairpark defeated East Burwood at Scoresby Recreation Reserve. The game was played in tough conditions with a big downpour coming down midway through the second quarter and a serious injury delaying play during the third quarter which saw the quarter go fifty-five minutes. Fairpark kicked four final term goals to one to win by 15 points and break a 24-year premiership drought. In dry conditions, the premiership in the reserves was won by Surrey Park outpointing East Burwood, and in the under-19s, Silvan defeated a gallant Forest Hill. Our Bendigo Bank Netball EFL Premier Division, Division 1, 2 and 3 grand finals took place last Friday night at HE Parker Netball Centre. Like last week, it was great to see so much club support at the games. Wantirna South, Knox, North Ringwood and Croydon North were all victorious on the night to capture the premiership cup. To everyone involved in EFL footy and netball this season, thanks for your contribution and we hope to see you back next year. Six premiership cups will be handed out this weekend and we wish all the competing teams, players and officials the best of luck. Remember to tune in to our Eastland grand final coverage on 1377 SEN+ on Saturday and Sunday or watch the live stream via EFL.org.au. Troy Swainston Chief Executive Officer – Eastern Football League

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - DIVISION 1 DIVISION 1 - SENIORS Doncaster East and Croydon clash for the second time this finals series as the top two sides are set to meet in this weekend’s Division 1 grand final. Last time out was only two weeks ago in a semi-final where the minor premier was victorious over Croydon by only three points. Brock McLean played a huge role for the Lions in that one and will need to back up his strong performance if Doncaster East is to hold off Croydon one final time. As for the Blues, they have one of the competition’s most dynamic forward lines with over seven players who have kicked 18 or more goals this year.

DIVISION 1 - RESERVES Minor premier Park Orchards and second-placed Croydon will clash in this weekend’s reserves decider. Croydon comes in after a narrow nine-point victory in last weekend’s preliminary final against Doncaster East. Inaccuracy in front of goal nearly cost the Blues and they will need more composure on the weekend if they are going to knock off Park Orchards. These two sides last met a fortnight ago in the semi-final where Park Orchards was too good, winning by 16 points.

DIVISION 1 - UNDER-19s Park Orchards and Surrey Park will battle it out this Saturday, with the minor premier defeated in the semi-final when second-placed Park Orchards sent Surrey Park to a preliminary final against Lilydale after defeating it by two goals in the semi. Surrey took care of business in the preliminary final against Lilydale but will need to improve on its performance if it is to rectify the semi-final defeat of two weeks ago. Keep a keen eye on this one as it could go either way.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW - DIVISION 2 DIVISION 2 - SENIORS Ringwood and Mitcham will meet in this weekend’s EFL Division 2 grand final and both sides are in red-hot form after defeating the minor-premier, Boronia, in respective finals. Ringwood took down the Hawks by 14 points in its semi-final, led by five goals from Mitch Farmer, while Mitcham toppled Boronia by 18 points thanks to big games from Jake Parente and Lucas Marro. The last time these sides met was back in Round 16 when Ringwood made short work of Mitcham, winning by 47 points. Mitch Farmer kicked six for the Redbacks in that matchup, so expect Mitcham to send plenty of attention his way in order to shut him down this weekend.

DIVISION 2 - RESERVES It’s first versus second in the reserves grand final with Boronia and Mitcham set to clash. It will be the second match-up between the two teams this finals series after the Hawks defeated Mitcham by only eight points a fortnight ago. Mitcham had a close call in last weekend’s preliminary final, just scraping past Heathmont by six points off the back of three goals from Adam Glanville. Mitcham will need to stop Boronia sharp-shooter Luke Hare who has kicked 23 goals for the year and looms as the Hawks’ biggest threat in front of goal.

DIVISION 2 - UNDER-19s After sending Mitcham packing in last week’s preliminary final, Heathmont will meet minor premier East Burwood in the big dance this weekend. The Rams are the hot favourites in this match-up, after only suffering one loss this season and defeating Mitcham by over 70 points two weeks ago. The grand final will be the first clash between the two sides since Round 13 when East Burwood defeated Heathmont by 27 points. If the Jets are to pull off the upset they will need forward Harry Isaacs (39 goals this season) to fire.

Versatile midfielder who always seems to have time when he wins the footy. Very strong overhead. Skilful wingman with a piercing kick. Runs all day, has added a hard edge to his game this season. Attacking defender who runs and carries the ball, is elite by foot on either side of his body. Big, strong forward with vice-like hands, can play through the midfield when required.
