INSIDE THE EFL Resurrection As we head into our first weekend of senior football grand finals, seeing a few clubs who are or have been involved, it got me thinking about footballing resurrection. Scoresby’s rise this season has been the best case in point. Sunday week back I saw their veterans team win through to Phil Murton this week’s grand final with a EFL Chief Executive Officer comfortable win over Wantirna South. Last Friday night their netball team took out the Premier Reserves flag. Then on the Sunday I saw the reserves and senior teams fight it out for a place in the Division 3 grand final. How far they’ve come. It was only a few years back, in my first few months as CEO, I remember difficult conversations with presidentelect Steve Weir on how they were going to keep the club afloat. A tough few years followed, with regular floggings in Division 1 to start with, then the drop to Division 3. It’s why I hope there’s some players, committee and supporters who are still around from those tough days that are enjoying some brighter times now. There are a few other examples too. Surrey Park, once on the end of a 60-plus game losing streak, have had both their reserves and under-19s play during the finals with the 19s making the grand final. With a young senior team and building a strong relationship with the junior club, the future looks bright. After some lean years not that long ago, Glen Waverley Hawks find themselves with the chance to win their first grand final. East Burwood are playing off in the reserves grand final this weekend while the seniors just missed out after a terrific year. Having been into the club this year and seeing the buzz that winning games has brought, it shows that whether you’re winning games in Division 1 or 4, it doesn’t matter. Last year we had Donvale win in Division 4, just four years after being in recess. I wrote a piece at the time about Scoresby, relevant for any club that’s going through a period of difficulty. That in the history of the club, when the walls are adorned with pictures of premiership teams, that the efforts of those who keep clubs afloat in the darkest times is somehow recognised. Scott Cairns and Paul Bevan from Nunawading at present. Rod Buncle and Andrew Toop at Surrey Park. John Giles and Kev Keaney at Donvale.

Rob Peak and the Worner brothers at East Burwood. The Hockings, Danceys and Potts at Glenny Hawks. People who put up their hand when often no-one else will and all seems too hard. Divisional footy helps clubs find a spot where they can be competitive and rebuild from and the incoming restructure will assist in giving more clubs the chance to play finals and taste the ultimate success. This was a big motivating factor behind the change. Seeing the buzz around clubs competing in finals over the last few weeks and knowing how big the build up to a grand final will be for everyone involved reaffirms this position. So, for clubs like Nunawading and Chirnside Park who have had tough years in 2018, it shows a brighter future, while taking plenty of hard work, may not be that far away. This Sunday also marks grand final day for the Deakin Uni Senior Women’s Competition at Lilydale, with Vermont taking on Mount Evelyn in the Division 1 grand final, while in Division 2, it’s Donvale playing Blackburn. The competition this year had 18 teams across two divisions. Combined with the 110 teams in the Eastern Region Girls Competition, it’s amazing to think that just a few years ago there were half a dozen junior girls teams and three senior women’s teams in Melbourne’s east. With club junior girls programs building and increasing numbers of girls graduating from the under-18 competitions, indications for next year are that we may have in excess of 30 teams, with four divisions a distinct possibility. The standard of footy is improving quickly, but more importantly, it’s giving girls and women across the east the chance to play our great game and all that comes with being part of a club and team. Some of the stories this year have been inspiring. Boronia building their numbers and enjoyment as the year went, despite struggling on the scoreboard, culminating in a big win with the vets giving them a guard of honour and belting out the club song together. South Croydon’s inaugural year including a game when a couple of mums and senior president Cathy White joined in to help make up the numbers, the pres even getting on the scoreboard. Vermont making the grand final in their first year. There is an air of excitement and innocence that comes with female footy, which is a bit lacking in the men’s footy. Our focus in 2019 will again be on trying to integrate men’s and women’s footy on match days as much as possible. We’ve had a number of examples this year where it’s worked fantastically, and for the full benefits to be fully reached, this has to happen. Best of luck to all teams this weekend and see you at the footy.

EASTLAND NETBALL REVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

T

he Netball EFL season is all over for another year with the Premier, Premier Reserve, Divisions 1 and 2 grand finals played last Friday night.

It was Fairpark Yellow who came away with the premiership cup for the second year in a row. Fairpark came streaming out of the blocks in the first quarter taking a nine-goal lead at the first break against Wantirna South Devils. The Devils worked tirelessly to get the margin down but just wasn’t enough to stay within reach. Fairpark defeated Wantirna South, 49 goals to 30. Stephanie McNay from Fairpark was solid for all four quarters which earnt herself a best on court medal. Fairpark’s Claire Van Dreumel showing why she has been a leading goal scorer across the whole division with 28 goals and Victoria McLellan backing her up with 21 goals. For Wantirna South Lauren Woodgate’s standout season in the goal circle was shown again as she scored 24 goals for her side. The Premier Reserve grand final was won by Scoresby Swoopers who went on to defeat Lilydale Falcons, 58 goals to 46. After an even first quarter it was all Scoresby from the second quarter, they blew out their quarter time lead of three goals to half time leading by 14. Although Lilydale didn’t go away, it just wasn’t enough to compete with Scoresby. Scoresby’s Bianca Sanzaro’s performance was just far too good and it got herself the best on court medal. Sanzaro’s massive

www.efl.org.au

game in the goal circle saw her shoot 37 goals and her goaling duo Karin Halstead with 21, they were too good for Lilydale’s defence. In Division 1, it was an inspired come-from-behind win for South Croydon Red who got over the line against Fairpark Red. South Croydon were down at every break before the last quarter, at three quarter time they found themselves down by four goals. Naomi Linossier from South Croydon had a dominant game which saw her receive the best on court medal. South Croydon was led by Jamie Sands and Sophie Stubbs in the goal circle while Fairpark’s Megan Williams was their highest scorer for the game. The Division 2 grand final saw Vermont Eagles come away with the victory against Croydon, 38 goals to 22. A shaky start from the minor premiers saw them trailing Croydon at the first break by two goals. Vermont was able to find their rhythm in the second half and shut down Croydon for the rest of the game. Vermont’s Hannah Barry-Murphy played out a solid game of netball which meant she was the one to receive the best on court medal for that match. Kellie Phillips stared in the goal circle for Vermont with 27 goals while Croydon’s highest goal scorer was Matilda Higgins with 10 goals. We would like to thank all the players, officials and supporters over the 2018 Netball EFL season. The EFL is looking forward to an even bigger and better season next year!

DIVISION 4 GRAND FINAL PREVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

T

HE stage is set for the Division 4 grand final

In the first round of finals, it was the Whitehorse Pioneers who cemented the first spot in today’s decider, defeating minor premiers, Glen Waverley Hawks by a mere two points with inaccurate kicking from both sides. Fast forward two weeks and we are set for a re-match of that game for the premiership trophy after the Hawks were able to bounce back and defeat a strong East Burwood outfit. Hawks’ coach Ryan Flack made sure they didn’t focus on the disappointment of the previous loss in the lead up to last week’s game.

“We had already arranged to have a dinner back at the club after that game (first semi-final) for all the partners, supporters and everything like that,” Flack said. “It actually became a really good forum for us to just put that day to bed and refocus and reset for the week (prelim). “I think we went in with a pretty good mind set and we knew that there was a job to be done and East Burwood certainly made us work for it.”

“Many of the weeks (during the season) we’ve had seven or eight individual goal kickers which we think is important for us in terms of us being a dangerous side, we don’t rely heavily on one or two players.”

For Whitehorse, it was about managing its week off wisely and keeping the bond strong for the next two weeks in time for the grand final.

After having the last couple of weeks to reflect on its first final, Whitehorse knows it had some areas to work on.

Whitehorse’s assistant coach, Joel Daley gives an insight to how they prepared.

Daley and the club are excited for what Saturday’s game will bring.

“Last week we had a few sore boys on the Tuesday, so we had a light night then on Thursday we ramped it up a little bit,” Daley said.

“Obviously we’re very excited to be in the grand final but at the same time we know that we were pretty lucky. They (Glen Waverley) missed a couple of shots late in the game and we think we have a lot of improvements to come out that,” he said.

“We then met at the club on Saturday and we all went and had a look at the Glen Waverley and East Burwood game. “Trying to stick together you know, we just bonded really well - just over the half way mark of the year, we sort of made a bit of a pact that we were going to become brothers. “We’ve stuck together ever since and that’s what we tried to do last week.” For the Hawks, Flack is confident that their defensive pressure in their forward 50 will support their multiple goal scorers. “(In the preliminary final) I thought our pressure was really good and we probably generated a couple of shots just from tackle pressure and winning free kicks in our forward 50 from forward defensive pressure,” he said. “We’ve showed we’re a pretty accurate side all year but occasionally you have those days where you’re off. 12

The Eastern Footballer

“In that semi-final it was a low scoring game, both sides applied a lot of pressure and different momentum swings were there. “So whichever team can get on top and make the most of their chances and put the most pressure on the opposition will probably end up winning the flag.” Saturday will be Whitehorse’s first grand final appearance since 2007, where it won the club’s last flag - senior coach, Jamie Carpenter was an integral part of the win, too. For the Glen Waverley Hawks, they have never won a senior premiership in the 45 years of the club’s existence. Their last grand final appearance was in 2012 in Division 3 where they lost to North Ringwood. The Hawks and Pioneers are one win apiece in the pair’s last two encounters, with just seven points separating the two sides in Round 10 and two points a fortnight ago in the semi-final.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS VERMONT: First up may we congratulate our Netball Team who won the Women’s Div.2 Premiership on Friday Night. A particular well done to Captain Hannah Barry-Murphy, who not only is the prime organizer but deservedly won the Best Player award in the Grand Final. We also have our Woman’s Football team in the Grand Final starting at 12.15pm tomorrow at Lilydale. We all wish Coach Meredith Denvir and the players the best of luck and urge supporters to try and get there tomorrow. To have our three 1st.Div. sides here today for the Second Semi Finals is a terrific achievement given the injuries that have plagued our Seniors and Reserves all year and the unfortunate situation with the Under 19 competition where we only played 13 games. The result so far is a credit to our Coaches Harmit Singh, Paul Breen and the U19 panel of Coaches :Paul Barlow Kris Barlow and Jack Furey. We well know that finishing on top does not guarantee anything, but the rest last week was very much welcomed. To our supporters we thank you for your continued assistance. Our thanks go to all our Sponsors, particularly the Wantirna Hill Club, Lilydale International, Rycon Building Group, Freight Concepts, Bekdon Richards Estate Agents, Simpson Constructions, Asahi and the Bendigo Bank. Tonight we are back at Vermont hopefully with lots of smiles. The Social Club is open from 5pm. Presentation Night will be on Thursday 27th of September at Clubrooms.

SOUTH CROYDON: Fantastic start to last weekend, when on Friday evening our Division 1 Netball Red team continued their undefeated run and took out the Grand Final. By all accounts a fantastic come from behind win by this outstanding team led by Bec McCormick. Congratulations ladies and hopefully we will see you all back for 2019! On Saturday morning the combined U19 Sth Croydon/ Whitehorse team easily won their prelim and have made it through to the Grand Final (today as you read this), and another contest against Surrey Park! Saturday afternoon at Bayswater - two close games; the Reserves fought out a close encounter and missed out by 4 points against Blackburn. The game ultimately could have gone either way, and the boys gave their all. They now take on Doncaster at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley tomorrow (Sunday) in a must win 1st semi-final. The Seniors turned around the H&A results against Doncaster - this time we came from behind to take out a very hard fought game by kicking a goal with the game’s last scoring shot! To be honest we should have held a bigger lead early and recorded a greater winning margin, if not for our poor kicking – 30 scoring shots of which 21 points were registered. Today we meet Vermont again in what we hope will be another close clash against the Eagles. Tomorrow the Vets play their Grand Final at Lilydale Sports Oval – please attend this game if you can and give the old boys your support. Best of luck to all players representing our great club – you have made us extremely proud. Social SCFC Presentation Night - 12th October at Cheong Park 7pm start. This is going to a huge night so please book early to avoid disappointment. $65 per head for 3 course meal. Drinks at bar prices. Contact Cathy 0403 122 966 or Michelle 0409 929 155 to book. DIVISION 1 SENIORS

DONCASTER: Last week was certainly a heart-stopper for Division 1 supporters with 3 of the 4 senior/reserve finals decided by a goal or less. And the Sharks were deep in the action with a disappointing 6-point loss by the Seniors and a delightful 4-point win by the Ressies. The good news is that both footy teams are still “alive” in September with both the Firsts (vs Blackburn) and the Seconds (vs Sth Croydon) playing ‘cut-throat’ first semi-finals on Sunday at Glen Waverley. GO SHARKERS !!! “Footy Karma” is alive and well in the EFL and last week it came to the Sharks in a big way with a very bitter-sweet taste !! Seniors: Having narrowly beaten the reigning premiers twice in the minor rounds, we were keen for the trend to continue. But the opposition and Footy Karma had other ideas ! Sth Croydon was switched on from the first bounce and could have blown us out of the game early but for bad goal-kicking and a big slice of lady-luck for the Sharks. In the 2Q we lifted well and with better drive from the midfield and accurate goal-scoring the Sharks forged ahead – only to let the opposition back in the game with two late goals. The 2H continued a closely-fought, entertaining final with neither side managing to establish a match-winning break. At 3Q time the margin was only 4 points and, at the 23- minute mark of the last, the scores were level. For the next 8 minutes the game was a torrid, defensive, scoreless arm-wrestle by both teams. But in the final minute of the game there was no-more lady-luck for the Sharks as an inadvertent, defensive action led to an opposition goal. The bitter Footy Karma had spoken !! Best for the Sharks were: Whelan (a great shutdown job), Annakis (under close attention), Rambo and Kalanj (each with 3 valuable majors), Vanders (tough, defensive rebounding) and JT (the work horse !) Ressies: Having lost twice to Rowville during the season the underdog Sharks were nevertheless keen to make amends. And that we did, with a fighting, disciplined effort by all. Rowville was kept goal-less from the second minute of the game until well into the 3Q. In the meantime we took on the opposition and, with Jarvo feeding our on-ballers, we used Cheesy’s smarts (3 goals) up forward to grind out a 14-point lead at the last break in a lowscoring affair. In the 4Q the opposition came hard at us but the boys stood tall – with resolute, desperate and determined footy to hold off Rowville in a major upset win. The Footy Karma had spoken again, this time sweetly, in a (4) points decision for Doncaster. Best of the Sharks were: Jarvo (the ageless warrior !) and several of the younger guys who represent the club’s senior future: Thiely, Millsy, Liebo, Pascoe and Tommy B. Great effort, fellas ! DIVISION 1 SENIORS

BLACKBURN: It will be another busy weekend watching our 4 Senior Teams participate in EFL Finals action. Our wonderful Women’s team will be playing in a Grand Final tomorrow in just their first season together. It what has been a fantastic effort for all players, families and supporters. With the experienced Leeann “Gilly”” Gill at the helm, the girls have demonstrated great teamwork and continued development to give themselves every chance tomorrow in the big one. All the best ladies Both our Futures (U19) and Development teams will face arch local rival Vermont in big 2nd Semi Finals at Bayswater on Saturday. With both squads showing fight against stiff competition last week (Noble Park & Sth Croydon respectively) they will go in to both games aware that only the best 4 Qtr. performance will get the desired results for a GF berth the following week. We wish them all the best. Our Seniors were locked in a tough battle with Rowville last week in a must win Elimination Final and scores were level at H/T. After the long break, it was the boys in red and black that opened up a match winning lead slamming on 7 goals to 1 in the 3rd Qtr. To win by 38pts. Showing good ball movement and targets up forward the Burners made it hard for their opposition to stem the flow. It was a solid win which will give the boys confidence that if they repeat the intensity and game plan adherence, that they will be tough to beat against an in from Doncaster at Central Reserve on Sunday. Major Raffle: Tickets ($10.00) are now available for our major fundraiser with 1st Prize being a $3,000 Holiday package in Kuta Beach BALI. DIVISION 2 SENIORS UPPER FTG: The weather was cold, windy and wet at Boronia last week with the Reserves starting okay against Mooroolbark before getting run over late in the game. Our boys need to take their chances against good sides but they have another chance today against Bayswater determined to book a spot in the Grand Final. Best players last week were Josh Eyres, Ben Haddock and Jayden Cutts. The seniors started well with an early goal from Alex Giurini, but Donny East got away from us in the 2nd quarter before our boys rallied in the second half but were unable to convert enough opportunities to get close enough in the end. Best players included Mike Smith, Tim Riseley and Bryce Hards. Today we have another opportunity against Lilydale confident that if we play our brand of footy for the full four quarters we will book our spot in the Grand Final. Don’t forget Presentation Night this year will be at Kings Park on the 22nd September; please see Maxine or Wendy for tickets. Thanks to all our sponsors who have supported us this year, please use them and mention you are from the club. Good Luck Today Upper……Go the Red and Blue

LILYDALE: Father’s Day at Tormore Reserve was a chance for us to keep our season alive for another week. The game started at a hot pace with us not being able to impact the scoreboard and put Bayswater under pressure. To Bayswater’s credit they executed their game plan really well. They held up the play and played possession footy, we on the other hand couldn’t apply enough to get the ball back. Five goals down at the long break and a win seemed miles away. We tweaked the side around and demanded that the intensity lift otherwise we’ll be having mad Monday early. Two early goals to Bayswater saw us 42 points at the 15 minute mark then the game started to turn. Willo’s smother and goal was the catalyst for 5 goals in twelve minutes. Two points down a three quarter time. The last quarter turned into an arm wrestle with momentum switching between both sides. In the end Lowey goaled from 20 metres out to seal a most memorable victory . Every player deserves credit for the unselfishness they showed in getting the win, that’s what makes good teams.

EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) - WILD CARD vs GIPPSLAND POWER WESTERN JETS - 12.12.84 EASTERN RANGES - 7.4.46 Season 2018 has come to an end for Eastern Ranges, after a 38-point loss in the Wild Card match against Western Jets. The day began with a heart-warming pregame address with the players’ parents present in the rooms on Fathers’ Day. It served as a reminder that at the end of the day, win or loss, their parents are there supporting their dreams. Once the game got underway, our boys took the fight to the Jets. After conceding the first goal of the game we then kicked the next four to open up a 10-point lead at quarter time. The second quarter was essentially a stalemate for much of the 25 minutes, with the only goal of the term going to Ben Hickleton for his third of the day. With a 16-point half time lead, there was reason to be confident going into the second

www.efl.org.au

half, if the same level of performance could be maintained. The Jets had other ideas, kicking nine goals to one in the second half. The momentum we had in the first half had quickly evaporated and by the fourth term it was a matter of salvaging the final margin. The boys were left to rue the same issue that has been common throughout this season - their best footy has been good enough to seriously challenge contending teams, but too many small lapses have allowed the opposition to get back into the game and win. The day’s best players were Mihaele Zalac, Kye Quirk, Adrian Kalcovski, Lachlan Stapleton, Joel Nathan, and Joel Burleigh. Goalkickers were: B Hickleton 3 D Brereton J Duff y A Kalcovski J Kritopoulos

DIVISION 4 SENIORS

GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS: It only seems like yesterday that the call out for preseason was posted on all our social networks. The previous 2017 season was still fresh in the players minds, who desperately wanted to improve on the results of 9 and 8 finishing 6th on the ladder. The Club created a mission statement - One Club, One Goal, Two Flags and with the playing group on board, set about putting in the hard work required to achieve this goal. Recruiting had the committee and coaching staff excited about the pending season ahead. A lot of work was done both off and on the field in preparation for the round 1 clash against Whitehorse Pioneers. While we struggled to organise a decent number of practice matches for the boys, we started to wonder what the season would bring when Whitehorse showed that their season sights were firmly set on getting to the Grand Final, giving the Hawks a lesson in skills and teamwork by defeating us 11.7.73 to 9.11.65. Round 2 presented much of the same as the previous week. We hosted our first home game in our new social rooms and although the mood in the rooms was upbeat with special guest speaker Sam Kekovich, the same could not be said for our on field performance - Glen Waverley Hawks 6.8.44 defeated by East Burwood 10.10.70. To our coach’s credit, Ryan Flack believed that we had the team to match it with the best. With a large number of new players, it was only a matter of time when the boys would gel as a group. This came in round 3 when we traveled to Forest Hill with the boys working well on the small ground defeating the Zebras 10.12.72 to Glen Waverley Hawks 15.12.102. With the 30 point win from the previous week, the Hawks never looked back and continued their winning season taking the next fifteen games straight to earn the second chance. The “Get out of gaol card” was played as we lost by 2 points in a nail biter in week one of the finals against Whitehorse pioneers. It felt like Déjà Vu as we had to face off against East Burwood with memories from round 2. But this fairytale story was not going to end last week as the boys ended up winning by 19 points. It has been a great journey along the way with our two netball teams making grand finals, taking home the silver wear in one game and missing out by 4 goals in the other. Win or lose today, the committee, members and supporters are very proud of what this group has done. The committee would like to thank all their wonderful sponsors for a great season and are looking forward to what the new division structure will bring in 2019. The Club Rooms at Central Reserve will be open from 6pm after today’s game. Please come down and help celebrate the season that was. Go Hawks.
