INSIDE THE EFL Let the grand finals begin! What a terrific round of games for the first full weekend of finals. After close finishes across all divisions’ home and away seasons, it was hoped we’d have a finals series full of wonderful action Phil Murton and it delivered. I was at EFL Chief Executive Officer East Burwood on Saturday and saw a great game of footy played between Ringwood and Park Orchards, both sides playing attacking footy and with Ringwood star Trent Farmer kicking seven goals at one end and Nick Handley five at the other, it went right to the line with the Sharks prevailing by the narrowest of margins. Over at Bayswater, South Croydon delivered a comeback for the ages to give themselves an historic first, Division 1 finals victory and two chances to make the big dance. While on Sunday, Mooroolbark, minus Kire Talevski, got over the line by two points against a gallant Lilydale, while Heathmont continued its good, late and post-season form getting over Templestowe by just four points. This weekend marks the beginning of our senior grand finals for a few hundred players across Division 4 seniors, reserves & under-19s, plus the veterans and senior women’s. For some, it may be their first experience of a grand final while for others, like Donvale legend Jason Wade, it may be one of many, but brings with it a huge level of excitement and anticipation no matter how many times you’ve experienced it. Each game will have its own story. The winner of Division 4 is bound to be full of emotion, whichever way it goes. Forest Hill is looking to end the longest premiership drought in the competition having gone so close in recent years, and in doing so send outgoing coach Martin Stillman out in the best possible way.

Up Springvale Road at Donvale, who would have thought that through the depths of the club’s recess in 2014, they’d be here just three years later with all three teams competing in the grand final and a club rebuilt and reborn. Donvale going into recess and the rebuild of Scoresby were the two biggest issues faced in my first six months as CEO of the League. No matter the result, having seen the work put in behind the scenes by club stalwarts John Giles, Glenn Brindley and Kev Keaney to help get the club up and running again, just being there on Saturday is a victory of sorts already. The Deakin Uni Senior Women’s Competition has been a wonderful season with seven of the nine participating clubs fielding a senior women’s team for the first time. And if enquiries are anything to go by, we should be able to expand to a twodivision competition in 2018. Bayswater has fielded a women’s team for a number of years, and of their own admission, had often struggled. They’ve relished the localized competition this year and go into Sunday’s grand final as favourites. Its opponent, Waverley Blues are a great story. Coached by former Blues player Chris Goldstraw, most of the girls haven’t played before this season, but have improved and developed throughout the year and go into the grand final full of confidence after a terrific win over Mount Evelyn in the prelim. Some names to watch out for are Marissa Lee, Zoe Alston and Leesa McShane and for the ‘Waters and Bridget Murphy, Charlotte Krelle and Shannon Bone for the ‘Blues. While in the veterans’ GF, familiar EFL names the likes of Giannopoulos, Finlayson, Girola, Adams, Pardo and Candler will again be strutting their stuff on the big stage. If the footy last weekend is anything to go by we are in for a great weekend. Let’s hope the weather gods are kind to us, best of luck to all teams and see you at the footy.

Division 4 Grand Final Preview By: Matt Fotia It’s that time of year once again. After 18 gruelling home and away rounds and a couple of physical weeks of finals, we’ve finally arrived at the big dance. All those weeks in the sun back in November are a distant memory as we look towards the Division 4 decider.

“I say this with all sincerity, for Forest Hill to win the premiership this weekend, it’s not going to be one player who wins the game off his own boot or by himself, it’s got to be 22 contributors playing their role,” Stillman said. “Donvale are such a good football team that we can’t just rely on one or two players. It’s got to be a team effort.”

In its 50th year, Forest Hill is looking to avenge the nail-biting VS six-point loss to the Ferntree “We know Donvale’s strengths Gully Eagles in last season’s and what we need to do, to peg grand final. Zebras coach Martin them back a level or two (and) Stillman will being telling his every coach in the competition side not to dwell on years gone by as they prepare know what Donvale do and how they play. this time around. “It’s just a matter of the players being able to “I don’t think you can look in the rear vision in relation to this week’s game, it’s a different game, a different opposition and different conditions,” Stillman said.

execute it…having the artillery and cattle to negate their assets and at the same time you’ve got to be doing things right at your end.

“We had 13 players in the preliminary final who played in last year’s grand final, and I mentioned to them after the game, you’ve got another opportunity here.”

“Make no mistake, they’re a very, very good football team – well-coached, well-disciplined, terrific backline, great midfield and key forwards (and) they go in, rightfully so, as premiership favourites.”

One player who won’t be gracing Walker Park come Saturday is key forward Matt Carnelley. The Zebras’ focal point suffered a season-ending injury midway through the season and it has seen the necessity for other players to step up.

The Forest Hill coach and the club as a whole are aware of the amazing achievements of its playing group throughout recent seasons. Grand finals are a rare occurrence, so to make it to the big dance in consecutive seasons is an effort to be proud of.

Nicholas Pincott has slotted 30 goals this season, including five against Donvale, whilst Timothy Johnston has added five majors during the Zebras’ finals campaign which has brought his season tally to 29. Stillman believes that Carnelley’s injury may have been a blessing in disguise for the Zebras.

“It’s a monumental effort to make a grand final, so much effort goes into it, from pre-season to everything that goes into a footy club,” Stillman said.

“We’ve had to reconfigure the forward line, which has made us more unpredictable.…there isn’t just one player who is the key focus in our forward line, we’ve got multiple avenues,” Stillman said. “It’s one of those things, Matt is a prodigious goal kicker so sometimes naturally we become Matt centric, so when you don’t have that key focal point when you’re entering the forward 50, generally the players look for the best option and that’s what you want as a coach.” Defensively for the Zebras’, Todd Burger has been instrumental all season. Having appeared in the best players eight times this season, Burger will be the leader of a back six, which along with the rest of the side, must work together if Forest Hill is to be victorious this weekend. 6

The Eastern Footballer

“To qualify for another final is an achievement in itself, but the reality is the difference between winning and losing is just enormous. “For the winner all the time, effort and hard work is paid off and for the loser, well we know that feeling all too well.” For Stillman, this weekend is more than just another chance at silverware. It’s his last game as coach of the Forest Hill Football Club. It’s a confusing situation to be in. “It’s a bit of weird feeling knowing that for the last seven years I’ve coached football and this Saturday win, lose or draw, it’s my last game. This time next week I won’t be planning, I won’t be preparing,” he said. “Walking off the ground with a premiership cup and a premiership medal would be a fairytale

finish and a great way to finish my coaching career. “I was fortunate enough in my last game as a player to walk off as a premiership player, so i’m hoping it’s a similar scenario as a coach. “I think could live with that.” For the Donvale Football Club this weekend is a massive sign that it is well and truly back on the road to redemption. In 2014 the club did not exist, a long way from its 2005 Division 1 grand final appearance. This Saturday they have a chance to take a huge step on their way back to the top. The Magpies have seemed unassailable in the second half of the season and after knocking off Forest Hill in the qualifying final, they were rewarded with a week off. Coach Matt Fife thinks the increasingly common notion that the week off can be a bad thing is nonsense. “It’s a good thing, it’s been a long year, we’ve got a number of sore boys in there, the week off is a blessing for us, it gives us a little bit of time to reevaluate and re-focus,” Fife said. “I’m not a big believer in breaking momentum of wins or what not, quite a few guys over the past three or four weeks that we’ve given a rest too, on their returns they’ve performed pretty well, so it’s all good.” Having played their opponents three times already this season, Fife knows what to expect from a Forest Hill side that they’ve defeated on each of those occasions this season, but he is wary of a curve ball being thrown his way. “I’m expecting a surprise of some sort, the first couple of times we played them they were pretty similar they didn’t really change anything, but last game we played them (in the qualifying final) they came out really physical, to try and rattle a few of our inside players and Leardi on the outside… just tried to really up the physicality around the contest.” It’s no wonder the Zebras went after the Donvale midfield. With players such as Sam Coghlan, Karl Toce and Kyle Wignell combined with the outside run of Matt Leardi, the Magpies’ engine room provide the ball on a silver platter for the twin towers up forward in Nicholas Murphy and Jake Purcell, who have kicked 160 goals between them this year. Ruckman Zac Haig is often under-valued as well. The tireless big man covers the ground better than www.efl.org.au

most of his opponents and has featured in his sides best players nine times in 2017. Despite having lost last year’s grand final, Forest Hill does have much more immediate big dance experience than Donvale. Fife believes that experience will help the Zebras, albeit experience in a losing final. “It’ll be in their favour that’s for sure, having grand final experience is definitely a benefit. Just for the composure and the communication with the blokes who haven’t been there before, how it is and what to do,” he said. “We’ve got a few guys in our side who have played in a flag in higher divisions, and they’ve been a real support for the younger guys throughout the season especially heading into finals. “Your Purcells, your Murphys, these sorts of guys, Hayden Cotsford played in the 2005 Division 1 grand final, so there are blokes who have been around the traps and played in grand finals before, they’ve been a great help this week.” Regardless of the result this weekend, Donvale has had an incredible turnaround since the events of 2014. Its initial year back in the League left a lot to be desired, but after a preliminary final appearance in 2016 and a now a shot at glory this season, the sleeping giant is ready to rise from its slumber. “It’d mean the world (a premiership), there’s been a lot of heartache for individuals involved with the club, the supporters,” Fife said. “It’s been a pretty rapid development over the past 18 months, there has been a lot of smiles on people’s faces down there, and the numbers, the support has just swelled especially over the past two or three months, the amount of people at the club on a Thursday night and after games, it’d just mean the world to a lot of people.” No matter what the scoreboard reads come 4:45pm on Saturday afternoon, the Eastern Football League will have yet another fairytale story to tell. Whether it’s the immediate redemption of an up and coming club and a cinematic finish to its coach’s career, or the first major signs of a powerhouse being reborn, this clash promises to be one to savour. I know where I’ll be this weekend. Make sure you’re there with me too. 7

SENIOR WOMEN’S PREVIEW By: Megan Hustwaite Twitter: @MeganHustwaite

AND then there were two. The inaugural Deakin Uni Eastern Region Women’s season reaches a sensational crescendo this Sunday when Bayswater and Waverley Blues face off in a fascinating senior grand final at Lilydale. Bayswater was the first team to book its place in the maiden decider, taking the express route by knocking off Mount Evelyn in the opening weekend of the finals series a fortnight ago. Meanwhile, the Blues have tread the scenic route defeating Knox in the elimination final then stunning the minor premier and sending the Grovers out in straight sets with an emphatic preliminary-final triumph. Over the last five years that the Waters have fielded a senior women’s team, skipper Zoe Alston has led her side through the hard times to the good times, a big climb up the ladder and now a crack at a maiden flag. “It was such an amazing feeling winning through to the Grand Final and now that we finally know our opponent it definitely feels real now. We’re going to have be 100 per cent switched on because we only played Waverley once during the season and we actually lost to them and it’s going to be a very tough game,’’ she said. “We’ve got only six players who have played football previously, the rest are newbies who have never played so to come this far all the girls are just so stoked. “We’d lost a lot of girls so this is a completely different team this year. I’ve played all five years and we’d been pumped by more than 100 points every game so to have such a great season and make the Grand Final, it’s obviously the most enjoyable year I’ve had playing footy.”

game then put the game aside and talk about our lives. We’ve clicked together, we’re friends now, we look after each other and I think that’s comes through on the field and it makes such a difference.” Following their 10-point qualifying win over Mount Evelyn on August 26, the Waters recovered on Monday night, trained Tuesday then Thursday, had a quiet, low key weekend and then gathered at Silvan Recreation Reserve to watch last Sunday’s preliminary final as a team. The skipper‘s biggest take out of the tense match was the Blues sheer desperation: “They wanted that ball, they were to the ball first and pressured Mount Ev the whole game”. “After watching the prelim I just said to the girls to forget our first final, we’ve got to focus on this game now, it’s going to be tough and we can’t go in cocky because it won’t pay off, not like a side against Waverley, not against anyone, that’s for sure.” Alston has captained the senior side for the past five years and knows how much a first flag would be to so many. “It would honestly be such an incredible feeling, after the last couple of years we’ve had it’d be unreal and from my point of view I’ve been captain all these years and to lead these girls and win I’d just be stoked. From the start to where we’ve come now is incredible and I’d just love to see all the girls faces, I’d be stoked to see how excited they’d be.” The Blues’ fairy tale campaign stretched to the final week of the season with a 15-point victory over Mount Evelyn. Coach Chris Goldstraw wasn’t surprised by the result.

A few tweaks to team preparation and a strong team bond have helped Bayswater create cornerstones of success according to Alston.

“It was a hard-fought game but they did so well. It’s a relief but it’s not surprising in that I knew if we played well we were good enough to win.

“I know our trainings have been a lot harder and we take recovery a lot more seriously now because the last couple of years we’ve had about 10 girls get career-ending injuries which has been horrible,’’ she said.

“We made the most of our opportunities which was good because it was probably 50-50 in terms of forward entries, they kept coming but held on there in the last quarter which was really good.

“And our team bonding has been an area too, we’ve really focused on that. On a Thursday night we go and have a meal together, talk about the 8

The Eastern Footballer

“I just said it was a really fantastic team effort and that’s the mantra we’ve taken into each game, everyone knows their roles and everyone played them on Sunday and that’s what got us the win.”

“We love a challenge, we’ve been challenged on and off the field all year with developing a team and also trying to win games. I just said enjoy this feeling right now but know we’ve got one more challenge to come,’’ Goldstraw said.

season with a win, some people spend years and years chasing this and never play in one,’’ he said. “I played in two Grand Finals in 18 years of footy so I don’t think the significance of this has washed over them, they’re really aware of how lucky they are but it’s the fact they’ve worked so hard and attacked each game with the same sort of intent and hunger.”

“This year has been a checklist and it’s one more tick now. The girls are pumped and were very happy after the game but they want more, they’re not satisfied with getting through they want to win it now. We had a close game when we played Bayswater earlier in the year so it’s going to be a fantastic game.”

DEAKIN UNI SENIOR WOMEN’S GRAND FINAL Bayswater v Waverley Blues Sunday September 10 Lilydale Sports Oval 2.30pm

Getting a team together, off the ground and on the winners list has prepared the Blues for a challenging finals series.

The Blues will train as normal in the lead-up this week before enjoying a club dinner on Thursday night. “We’ll be focusing on the things we do well that have got us to this point. We know Bayswater are really hard at the ball so we’ve got to make sure we’re pressuring them at all times,’’ Goldstraw said. The coach knows nothing but the Blues’ best will do this Sunday. “We’re very aware of that. To win, well I think it’d be a fairy tale to be honest. To complete the www.efl.org.au

MEDIA TIPS DIVISION 4 GRAND FINAL Brett Beston: I’m very much on Donvale this weekend. The Vales haven’t lost a game since back to back defeats in rounds six and seven and have beaten The Zebras in all three meetings this season including the second semi-final by 5 goals. The Zebras turned on one of their best performances of the season in downing the Pioneers last week, led by Nathan Palmer and big William Stoneham and can’t be discounted. But with Zac Haig in the ruck, Peter Ancona through the middle and the twin towers of Murphy and Purcell, coupled with swingman Chris Sutherland, I believe Donvale have too many match winners, and it will be heartbreak again for the Zebras again in 2017. TIP: Donvale by five goals B.O.G: James Rausa (Donvale)

Ray Baird: Donvale will win the grand final simply because they are by far the best side in Division 4 by a long way. TIP: Donvale B.O.G: Nick Murphy (Donvale)

Daniel Cencic (EFL Media Manager): History awaits the winner in the Division 4 decider this afternoon – Forest Hill is aiming for its first flag since 1984 after coming agonisingly close in recent years, while Donvale looks to become the first EFL club to have won a flag in each of the four divisions. The question remains as to who can stop the twin towers up forward for the Magpies – Nicholas Murphy and Jack Purcell, who have booted 160 goals between them this season. The key will be in the midfield, where the Zebras will want to get on top early to limit Donvale’s supply forward – as we’ve often seen throughout the year even the best defensive set-ups find themselves under pressure if the Magpies’ midfield move it inside 50 quickly.

10

The Eastern Footballer

Donvale has beaten Forest Hill each time this season, but the Zebras edged closer two weeks ago in the first final – which should see this match produce a similar result. TIP: Donvale by 20 points. B.O.G: Matt Leardi (Donvale)

Matt Fotia: The best side all year will have some nervy times but ultimately get over the line at a packed Walker Park. Workhorse/ruckman Zac Haig will be best on, with hit-outs galore and a goal to boot. TIP: Donvale by 26 points B.O.G: Zac Haig (Donvale)

Steve White: Donvale has been dominant all season and I think they’re going up. Nick Murphy and Jack Purcell have kicked 160 goals between them compared to Carnelley (unfortunately injured) and Pincott with 83 for Forest Hill. If Forest Hill are to have a chance in this one then they’re going to have to win it in midfield and shut down the inside 50s for Donvale and also control the centre breaks. TIP: Donvale by 25 points. B.O.G: Dave Withers (Donvale)

EIGHT-STRAIGHT By: Tim Fitzsimons Most players would be over the moon to win a league best and fairest award throughout their junior career, but how about someone who has won eight in a row? Last week, Bayswater’s Ben White claimed his eighth-straight competition best and fairest award, dating back to his first year of under-11s as an under-10 and capping off a brilliant junior football career. White has polled a remarkable 232 votes across those eight years, never failing to poll less than 20 in a season. His best tally came in under-12s back in 2012 when he polled an astonishing 39 out of a possible 42 votes. His father, Michael White who has also coached him for the past three seasons, couldn’t be prouder of his son’s achievements. “Us parents, Michelle and I, we’re certainly very proud of him,” White said. “For a kid that’s small with his build, he’s certainly just surprised us all really the way he’s gone about his football.” As a smaller type midfielder, White has had to draw on his competitive instincts to achieve such heights across his junior career and his father believes this, along with working hard on his fitness of late has allowed him to become the player that he is. “He’s always just been that in and under footballer and I think his biggest belief is just he never gives up, always puts his best foot forward to try and do the best thing for the team and get them over the line,” he said. “He works on his fitness and that’s probably something that really improved in his game, his running ability for the whole four quarters.” His love for the game cannot be questioned and this is strongly evident from his father’s perspective. “We have always made sure to allow him to love the game and not feel pressure to perform every time he runs out onto the ground.” “We’ve never put any pressure on him to be that top footballer or anything like that. “As a parent you just go and watch and enjoy them playing football. “We certainly never put pressure on him to be anything different, just let him go about it and just enjoy his football with his mates and that’s how I’ve always looked at it.” White has been at the Bayswater Junior Football Club since under-9s and president Scott McAuliffe believes the club is blessed to have someone like www.efl.org.au

him represent Bayswater over his whole junior career. “He’s been a pretty amazing kid,” McAuliffe said. “His father was originally a Vermont player, bit of a legend there as well so for him to come over to the Bayswater junior footy club sort of shows how much respect for the club (they have) and to stay there all that time as well, I couldn’t be happier. “He’s been a captain, a leader for many years and that’s why he wins so many awards I suppose.” McAuliffe praises the fact he is able to not only lead his under-17s side, but also represent the whole club and act as a role model for many of the younger kids coming through the junior system at Bayswater. “They just look up to him all the time,” he said. “He doesn’t just carry his (under) 17s group, but all the (under) 15s boys, (under) 14s boys and (under) 13s boys that are at that age now where they are looking to the senior team. “They come down to watch him, try to learn from him and he’s just a good guy and lets them all in.” White played a couple of reserves games for the senior club earlier in the season but one of the biggest moments so far in his footballing career came in Round 17 of the senior season when he made his senior debut against Division 1 finalist, Blackburn. It is a remarkable achievement, especially for someone with a lighter frame at that age to play Division 1 senior football and capping off the achievement was the fact he was able to hit the scoreboard and kick a goal in his debut match. “I don’t think I’ve heard a louder cheer at the senior oval than when he kicked his first goal,” McAuliffe said. “He got tackled and crunched pretty hard early and he got up again as is true Ben spirit and kicked a goal.” Ben’s father believes playing senior football this season for Bayswater was the highlight of his year. “We’re really rapt that ‘Macca’ (Paul McCormack), the senior coach gave him that opportunity,” he said. “He probably enjoyed that more than any award, he really loved playing in the seniors. “That’s his main goal now for next year, to continue on and play more senior footy.” 11

SOUTH CROYDON: A fantastic day for our club last Saturday, when the club was able to tick off a long held objective – to win a senior final in Div. 1 – against quality opposition! Fantastic display by our boys to stick to the plans set by Patch and the coaching team, and have the belief that they could get stronger as the game progressed. Very exciting for our many supporters who have stuck with our club through thick and thin. Sadly, our development squad was unable to proceed further on Sunday – a tough game against Norwood with extra time required to determine the result. While we can all enjoy the win, the job has only just commenced for the playing group with at least two more games of football to be played – starting today against the competition benchmark. We know our players will be giving their all!

BALWYN: WELL, not the start to our finals campaign that we had planned or hoped for, however, that’s what the double chance is for! We’re still in it and will be striving to overcome Blackburn and win through for the chance to play off next week for a place in the Grand Final. Coach Pask said “We have full confidence in our players and we back them in to respond with a strong performance this week. We are very proud of the way they have continued to grow as a group and play with passion for the club, particularly when things get tough. Congratulations to all of our U19s, but especially those who received awards at their Presentation Night this week. Darcy Griffiths was the winner of the Best and Fairest, with Ned Clear Runner up. Most consistent went to Tom Horne, Best Team Man to Sam Kimber and Coaches Award to skipper Charlie Stewart. Despite the lack of wins during the year, this group was a lesson to all of us in persistence and never giving up. You should all be very proud of your efforts. Well done to all of you and we look forward to welcoming you back to Balwyn FC next season. Our club Best & Fairest will be on Friday 6 October at Green Acres Golf Club, Kew. $110 per person, all inclusive. Make your bookings now with Jo 0412 172 183 or tregear1@bigpond.com

BLACKBURN: In what is a testament to the hard work our Senior Teams put in over the pre-season, the results were evident in the last halves of both our U19’s (7 goals to 1) final v Noble Park and our stirring comeback in the Seniors (11 goals to 2) against Doncaster in the Elimination on Sunday. Despite heavy ground conditions, both teams combined well to nullify their opposition at one end and get on top in all aspects of the game to record very pleasing results for the supporter red army that came out to cheer on the Burners. We congratulate all new players and Coaches for getting their first finals victory with the Club and trust that with some more hard work and a little luck, there will be more spoils to come in the weeks ahead. This weekend, ALL three teams enter Week 2 with much to play for. The Colts and Reserves (undefeated to date) play for a GF spot against Vermont and Rowville respectively. The seniors have no easy task, taking on the winner of 4 out of the last 5 Div. 1 flags in Balwyn in what will be a ripper game and a true test for our emerging squad. The Tigers will be smarting after a loss to Sth Croydon but they will face a Panther outfit keen to impress after some solid recent form. It has been a big week on the track and we encourage all supporters to jump on the red and black bandwagon and enjoy the ride in September. Our Grand Final Eve Luncheon will take place on Friday 29th September, with Special Guest Speaker and 250 game Collingwood Premiership Star, Peter Daicos. Tickets are $100 /head, includes a 2 courses with drinks. PRELIMINARY FINAL Tormore Reserve 2:10pm

DONCASTER EAST: Ummmmm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ummmmmmm . . . . . . . . . It’s not often that the Colonel is at a loss for words . . . . . . . . ummmmmmm . . . . . . . . Well, here we are back at Tormore – this time fighting for survival. Lose today and we’re out – having thrown away our best ever chance of getting into Divvy one. We had our best possible side in last week, but maybe we were just too confident against Knox a team we had beaten by 59 points just a matter of a few weeks ago. On Saturday, Knox blitzed us with the wind in the 3rd quarter - 7 goals (3 in the first five minutes) to 2 points - and that was it – game over! Today we’re up against our old foe, Mooroolbark - We’ve had some ripper battles over the years – none more important than today though. They will come out with all guns blazing – they like nothing better than to beat Donny East so we’ll have to be on our very best behaviour to win this one and then have another crack at getting the big cup on our shelf at Zerbes. Our Presentation Night is set for Friday, October 6 (see www.defc.com.au for details) “Our Supporters roar every time that we score . . . . we’re the Boys from Donny East” - Colonel

MOOROOLBARK: Well done to the mighty Mustangs who overcame a gallant Lilydale last week to earn a spot in today’s preliminary final against Doncaster East. The result could have gone either way in a see-sawing game but in the end, we managed to hang on for a twopoint victory in what was a great exhibition of suburban football. With the late withdrawal of Kid Talevski, Aaron Beddoes was thrown down forward where he top-scored with three goals. Ben Slattery was tireless all game and was unanimously voted BOG. Metin Musa played his best game of the year while James McManus gathered numerous possessions in the centre. Jack Craig-Smith showed he’ll be a player of the future with another strong performance and Sean McManus and Max Ward were relentless in defence. Regardless of what happens today, the boys have put in a great season and thoroughly deserve to be where they are. However, a grand final berth would be an even greater reward for all the hard work that has been put in by the players and coaching staff alike. Presentation Night is to be held at the York on Lilydale on 28th September so make sure you see Steve or Julie Noonan to book your table.

PRELIMINARY FINAL East Burwood Reserve 2:10pm

RINGWOOD: So close yet so far for our Reserves and Seniors in last weeks 2nd Semi finals as both suffered nail biting losses by less than a goal. The Reserves allowed Park Orchards to get the jump on them early and were playing catch up footy for the first three quarters and at the last break were 5 goals in arrears. The boys lifted their game in the final term and finished off strongly piling on the goals only to fall short by 5 points at the final siren. The Seniors also tackled Park Orchards and in a very entertaining and good game of football both sides were closely locked together for the duration of the game. At each break the margin was less than a goal between the sides and after holding a 5 point advantage at the last break we extended our lead early in the last quarter with the first two goals. Park Orchards fought their way back and hit the lead late in the quarter only for us to hit back and get within a point before the siren sounded with us going into attack. Both losses were disappointing but we live to fight another day with the Reserves up against Templestowe and the Seniors playing local rivals Heathmont for a grand final berth in this Sundays Preliminary Finals. The Presentation Night is being held September 28 at The Coach and tickets are available through try booking so get in early and purchase to ensure your attendance. It’s a huge day for the club today and we wish all players and coaches the best of luck and all supporters are right behind the teams and will be out in force to cheer them on to victory. The social rooms will be open following the games and we encourage everyone to get back to Jubilee and help celebrate what we hope are two victories.

DIVISION 3 SENIORS

HEATHMONT: And the Jets win their way into week 3 of the finals! It was a big weekend last week for both the Junior and Senior clubs. Congratulations to Jed and Igor on their EFL Best and Fairest Awards, and to Tariku, Jayger and Levi on their Runner Up awards and to Grace polling in the top 5 in the Eastern Region Girls League. Definitely some great talent developing at Heathmont. On Saturday it was the Under 19’s turn to try and win their way to a Grand Final. In windy conditions at East Burwood, against the only side that had beaten them all year, Park Orchards, neither side were giving an inch – the boys had the lead at half time. The second half seemed to be played just down one end of the ground, with goals against the wind nearly impossible to kick, but the boys tackling and defending was terrific and they hung on for a 10 point win and go straight into the Grand Final next week! Congrats to Gary and the boys. On Sunday it was the Seniors turn again in windy conditions at Glen Waverley and going in as the underdogs against an inform Templestowe. Kicking with the wind in the first quarter the team managed 3 crucial goals which would set us up for the rest of the match. It was a bruising affair with both sides giving their all and neither side breaking clear. The second half saw the swirly wind conditions play a part and making it difficult to score and inaccuracy crept in but the Jets clung to a slender lead coming into the last – which seemed to go on forever, especially with the last 5 minutes played in Templestowe’s forward line! The roar from the Jets supporters when the siren rang was part relief and excitement as the team earned a spot in the Preliminary Final against close neighbours Ringwood – Good Luck to the Seniors – one more win and a Grand Final beckons. BACK TO THE CLUB tonight after the game THANKS to all the Supporters, and Sponsors that have helped get the club to this point – and hopefully there is one more game to play!

COMPLETE INJURY CARE The EFL is pleased to announce we have created a program with five leading medical providers to establish a player injury care program unrivalled in community sport.

from internationally trained and highly regarded surgeons.

The program is EFL Complete Injury Care, and through Lifecare, Vermont Urgent Care, Capital Radiology, Sports Med Biologic and Orthopaedic Specialists Melbourne, we are creating a level of expert care for EFL players usually reserved for those at the elite level.

Concussion is, understandably, an important topic for our industry. It’s an area research has shown most local GP’s aren’t comfortable dealing with, and that as an industry we need to be cognisant of providing the best level of care possible. Through this program and the fast access to the level of care available at Sports Med Biologic this is possible.

Lifecare, are a leading provider of physiotherapy and sports medicine services who have had a relationship with the EFL for in excess of 25 years. Vermont Urgent Care is a walk in doctor’s surgery open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to provide immediate care to injured players without waiting for hours at the public hospital or paying significant money before you walk in the door at a private hospital, with X-Ray available. Capital Radiology provide the full range of radiology services such as X-ray, CT scans and MRI, with quality care and fast communication with patients and other medical professionals. Sports Med Biologic are a sports medical clinic based in Box Hill of which the doctors have experience at the elite level of sport, mostly with AFL clubs, and will provide expert concussion care, both pre-screening and post injury management. And Orthopaedic Specialists Melbourne will help provide quick access to expert orthopaedic services

Vermont Urgent Care - Walk in Doctors Clinic. No appointment needed. 5 Boronia Road, Vermont http://vermonturgentcare.com.au/ Ph: 9874 3344

The program helps address two key concerns.

The second is when a player is hurt and needs immediate attention, or looks to have seriously injured themselves. With this program, the player can be assessed on the weekend at Vermont Urgent Care, be in getting scans on Monday at Capital Radiology, if they need to consult with an orthopaedic surgeon it will be done in a couple of days though OSM, and if surgery is required they could be on the operating table by the end of the week. Then post-surgery they can get expert rehabilitation though Lifecare to help get back on the ground ASAP. It’s a level of care only seen at the elite level but now available to community footballers. Keep your eye on the EFL website (efl.org.au) for more information on the program or contact the provider directly via the details below.

FOREST HILL: Our Reserves enjoyed their week off after their win against Donvale in the 2nd Semi Final and it was good to see so many of them bolster the crowd to get behind the seniors as they took on Whitehorse Pioneers in the preliminary final. I think it was a fair to say that the green and white had the bulk of the supporters at the ground and made themselves heard. In the ultimate high stakes game we came out determined and set the tone right from the outset with a 4 goal to 1 opening quarter was just the start we wanted. We continued to pull away in every quarter building a solid lead and by the last change it was clear to even the most pessimistic supporter that we will be taking on Donvale in the Division 4 Grand Final today. We didn’t drop off in the last and ran out convincing 59 point winners and the margin could have been greater if we had have converted better in front of goal. It was an even contribution with the back line standing strong, the midfield giving us first use of the ball and the forwards putting on scoreboard pressure. So Back to Back Senior Grand Finals, a terrific effort, now for the Premiership Cup the club so richly deserves. Best of luck to senior coach Martin Stillman in his last game caching the club and to reserves coach Matthew Peterson and the 46 players that represent our club today the Grand Finals. Our Under 12s were presented with their flag at the junior best and fairest vote count. Two of our junior Zebras won the best and fairest awards in their age groups. Congratulations to Christian and Luke on their B&Fs in the Under 13 and 17 age groups respectively. Hope to see plenty of the junior Zebras on grand final day. So the last game for season 2017 is upon us. A huge thank you to all the coaches, support staff, the committee, players and supporters which helped make 2017 a successful year for the Zebras. With both teams in their respective grand finals two premiership cups will be a very successful year. To those not going around again next year, thank you for your service and let’s send you out in style. We go into the grand Final as underdogs but our best football can match it with any side and if we play our game we will be hard to beat. Social Functions. After the game all supporters are encouraged to come back to the social club to celebrate season 2017, meals will be available and the bar will be open. September 23rd is the date set for the clubs best & fairest night come and support the B&F and the award winners and hopefully, two premiership sides. Speak to a committee member now to book your ticket or see our Facebook page for further details. Go Zebras!
