INSIDE THE EFL More Than a Game The behaviour of everyone involved in football clubs is always on show, on and off the field. As a sport you can’t have the good, without the bad. If we love the fact that participation numbers are high, and we draw big crowds to games, then we can’t complain when the level of scrutiny is high. Phil Murton EFL Chief Executive Officer Behavioural standards at footy clubs, as in the general community, have evolved significantly over recent years. There is an expectation, that has been fully embraced by clubs, that they look after the whole person and not just the player. It’s why many clubs run education sessions on a range of topics at their club and introduce leadership programs that deal with more than just playing the game. You only need to talk to police to hear about the kids involved in the juvenile justice system, and the overwhelming statistic that shows how few of these kids have been involved in any regular involvement in team sport. As the saying goes, “Play sport, stay out of court”. One of our clubs recently found itself in the media as a result of a stupid decision by some players, but despite what some people may have you believe, footy/netball clubs overwhelmingly make a positive contribution to their local communities. We know the ledger leans firmly to the side of clubs being a positive place for young men, and increasingly women, to be. As an example, on the same night the club incident was being reported, Knox Football Club was hosting the first of four “Outside the Locker Room” sessions, a program designed to help young people deal with mental health issues they face in their lives. Up Canterbury Road at Montrose, their under-14 and 15 boys were going through a session titled “Time to Man Up”, which looks at what it means to be a man, what qualities define a man, the importance of language and acting responsibly. More recently, East Ringwood juniors have a team all learning sign language to help communicate better with a teammate who is deaf. These are the kind of activities that are being held regularly in not only EFL clubs but clubs right across Victoria.

The EFL has been at the forefront in supporting and growing this work being done in clubs. We’ve worked closely with David Burt, the founder of respected club education provider Sport & Life Training (SALT) to help increase education in clubs and for the last five years we’ve part funded sessions in clubs. We believe for it to work, clubs need some skin in the game. Starting with EFL clubs and the Eastern Ranges, SALT now runs over 500 sessions each year in over 90 clubs from 22 different leagues, including working with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs’ next generation academies. In the last three years, SALT has delivered 275 sessions in EFL clubs, on topics such as drugs and alcohol, wellbeing and mental health, healthy masculinity, leadership, female empowerment and gender equity. As our clubs have grown with both netball and girls/ women’s footy, we’re having to challenge stereotypes and language that was once accepted. But as a result, clubs are becoming better places and building on their capacity to become real hubs of their community for everyone. Last Wednesday, in conjunction with the Women of the EFL, Eastern Health and AFL Yarra Ranges, we helped run a dinner forum on Women Leading Change. In what was a terrific night with a capacity 180 people in attendance, we heard stories from female leaders in sport, business and politics. It was a follow up to the Be The Change Forum we ran last year that looked at how clubs can become more inclusive, at a time where participation of females in our competition has grown from less than 1%, to almost 20% in just five years. With such rapid change, we know it won’t be perfect but the proof is in the pudding on the benefits a more inclusive club can bring, and those clubs committed to this will become the club of choice for players, supporters and sponsors. A LaTrobe University study showed that for every $1 invested into community football clubs, there was a $4.40 return in social value to society, which included social connectedness, wellbeing, mental health status, employment and personal development. As a father of three young boys, I know sporting clubs are a terrific place for them to learn not only sporting skills, but life skills. We will all make mistakes from time to time and need to ensure we learn from these. But overwhelmingly sporting clubs demonstrate they are great community places for young men and women to learn and grow.

THE FIVE By: Matt Fotia Twitter: @fotiamatt

T

he finish line is in sight people, not long to go now until we can contest those glorious matches we call finals. With all but one division’s finals contestants confirmed, it’s an interesting time across the League as we keep one eye on next week and one eye on September. Here’s five things we learnt from the weekend…

Mum! It happened again Yep, it happened again. Another premiership contender took down the early season favourite Vermont with relative ease on the weekend at Terrara Road. This time the victor was the Doncaster Football Club defeating the Eagles away from home for the first time in recent memory. The Sharks matched the intensity of the Eagles from the outset, and had a clear defensive structure which controlled the corridor and forced the Vermont attacks out wide. Throughout the first half the Eagles were able to find their way through the corridor on occasion, and their potent forward line ensured that they made the most of their opportunities, to lead at the main break. The second half however is where we really saw the fleshy wound of this Vermont side. The Sharks not only matched the intensity and pressure of the Eagles, they rose well above it and attacked the ball with more vigour, winning the contested possessions that mattered and defensively owning the Eagles ensuring the corridor was merely shark-infested waters. The result? An 11-goal-to-two second half in favour of the Sharks. Vermont would have had more possessions, content to circumnavigate the oval looking for that clear cut opportunity, but this meant a much slower tempo and allowed numbers to sit in front of Eddy and co. As the Eagles’ defenders pushed higher up the ground, this left a paddock of space behind them and when the Sharks did turn the ball over they were able to isolate Jake Kalanj (four goals and best on ground) to take full advantage. It is now time for Vermont coach Harmit Singh to re-assess his game plan and his stubbornness in regard to adapting mid-game. Since the semi final of last season’s finals series, Vermont is 2-4 against top five opposition. Of this year’s current top five, only Rowville hasn’t beaten the Eagles, but rest assured they’ll know the blueprint now. If sides attempt to match the Vermont style of uncontested play, reliant on foot skills, they won’t beat them, because they are hands down the best in that regard. However sides have now isolated the Eagles’ weakness. Contested possessions and their reliance on the corridor and we’ve seen what happens there. It’s a line in the sand now for the Eagles. Plan A is fine, I am not inferring that the system is poor, it evidently isn’t (11-3 record), however it has flaws. And the sides around them have figured out those flaws. There isn’t anything wrong with that of course, but they need to adapt rather than standing defiantly behind Plan A which has let them down on more than one occasion this season.

A Viking’s Tale David Johnson had a chance to live out every (Australian) kid’s dream on the weekend, nailing a shot after the siren, tucked in on the boundary line, from the arc to win his side the game, head strapped like the warrior he is, all this after taking a massive pack mark. Unfortunately for one of Norwood’s favourite sons, his kick started right and stayed right, meaning the Dogs got out of jail to draw level on top of the ladder. It shouldn’t have come down to Johnson’s right boot if we’re being honest. The Norsemen were putting on a clinic throughout the first half piling on nine goals to one, with a massive 19 scoring shots to four, with Jamie Bennell, playing as a permanent forward, snagging four. That first half showed the talent on the Norwood list, and how their best is up there with the top sides in the division. It was the third quarter, which saw South Croydon take the chocolates 7.7 to 0.1, which we have become all to familiar with this season at Mullum Mullum. The inconsistency that has ravaged the Norwood Football Club this season will disappoint deeply, because a side with their talent and star power is missing a massive opportunity to make waves in what has been the most open Division 1 in as many years. The Norsemen cannot continue to be the best of the rest. Not with this list and not with the program it has running off the field. I have a feeling that consistency will be a word used frequently this summer for those at Norwood pre-season.

8

The Eastern Footballer

Top-two flex their muscles. After last weekend’s win over Bayswater, the Croydon Football Club would’ve been quietly confident of pushing flag favourite Doncaster East all the way down at Zebres Reserve over the weekend, and led at the first break. It was a fleeting lead however as Doncaster East ran away to win emphatically by 52 points, with Jake Summers slotting five to bring his season tally to 40. At the LSO, Wantirna South would’ve also arrived buoyed by another opportunity to claim that elusive fourth place as the last fortnight had opened up nicely for the Devils, despite their Jekyll and Hyde season. Like their counterparts Croydon, they were well in the game at quarter time with the ladder-leaders just two points ahead. But, just like their counterparts they were blown away after the first break as the Falcons came away 58-point victors, with 13 individual goal kickers. Division 2 may be the only division still with a live finals race, but it doesn’t mean it’s ridiculously even. Lilydale and Doncaster East showed on the weekend, that when they’re on their game, you’re going to struggle to keep up with them. If you chuck Upper Gully into that conversation, the race for fourth place could be purely elementary.

Bears and Hawks restore calm Round 14 in Division 3 had the opportunity to crack the finals race wide open. Templestowe had a chance to jump into the five and send the Bear Cave into panic, whilst Heathmont could finally put pressure on the sides above it and make a play for that double chance. Alas, order remained as The Basin withstood the Dockers’ final heave-ho and Boronia held off a rampaging Jets in the dying moments. Both games saw times where the underdogs looked a chance of victory, but at either ends of the game. Templestowe matched The Basin move for move in the first half, with scores locked at 5.6 apiece, but fell away in the second half as Aaron Findlay (four goals) and Max Kruger (best on ground) inspired the Bears to an important 31-point win. Boronia jumped out of the blocks at H.E Parker and kicked six goals to none, before the Jets’ superior legs clawed them back into the contest, with old favourite Leigh Odermatt snagging four as they almost pinched victory. For the Dockers this loss will hurt, but not significantly. As previously mentioned in this column they’ve exceeded expectations this season by even being in the finals calculations and will now concentrate on finishing 2018 strongly. The Jets however will be much more disappointed. Despite being guaranteed finals football for a while now, they will be concerned by their inability to beat a side above them on the table. They’ve been close on all five occasions, but can’t seem to make the breakthrough. Their run home should see them finish on 13 wins, but it won’t count for much if they can’t figure out a way to beat one of the top three.

Oh Fairpark, not again! It’s the same old storyline in Division 4. I’m probably being a bit harsh to Fairpark for singling them out in the sub-heading as you could easily bring Kilsyth into this category. The category of slipping up again and again and again. This time out the Lions were heading up to Silvan to face a side positioned well below them on the ladder. A win would also see them close the gap to just four points between themselves and Forest Hill, who have been uncharacteristically shaky at times in 2018. The Lions couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain. They didn’t lead at any break and lost all four quarters of the match. This loss consigns them to another season without finals football, another season of what could have been. Much like Norwood in Division 1, the Lions have shown how good their best football is. Unfortunately they’ve shown us their worst footy way to often. Much like their first division counterparts, I’m sure consistency will be the catch-cry of the summer as well. For Silvan, things are looking good for 2019 and beyond. That’s five wins now, with four out of its last five. New coach Trent Martin can consider it a job well done for this season, with only more positives to come from the remaining games. Daniel Lemon has been a great acquisition and showed his class again on Saturday night, whilst Greg Smith popped up with another two majors to take his season tally to 15. There’s plenty to like about what’s going on at the Cattery and their fans should be excited for the seasons to come. EASTLAND NETBALL REVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

A

strong round of netball was played last Friday as we saw some huge wins across all seven divisions. The EFL netballers appreciate the constant support across all the clubs coming down and supporting them every week and with finals coming up, the best netball is yet to come… In Premier/Premier Reserve Division, we finally saw the undefeated Fairpark face their first loss. The Wantirna South Devils were led by Woodgate who scored 49 goals in their 66-47 win over Fairpark. Scoresby set their spot in the top four with a seven-goal win over Blackburn, Kelly with a steady 24 goals for the game. Lilydale remain in contention to secure a top four spot come finals after their big 68-51 goal win lead by the goaling of Luiyf. Boronia’s Rush scored a massive 60 goals in their 19-goal win against Wantirna South Devils Reserve. Norwood defeated Montrose, 50-38 with Dykstra leading the way with 39 goals. In Division 1, Knox Falcons continue to show the they are a strong side in this division with a steady win over Heathmont, 40-32. Coldstream were able to get the four points against Park Orchards by 12 goals. Kilsyth were led by Gill who scored 27 goals in their 36-24 goal win over Scoresby. South Croydon’s third quarter was far too strong for Blackburn with the Dogs getting a 31-goal win. William’s 26 goals for Fairpark set them up for their win against Forest Hill, 37-35. Over in Division 2, The Basin were able to get their fifth win on the board against Knox, 38-32 with Watson scoring 25 goals. Forest Hill kept a steady lead for the whole game resulting in six goal-win against Lilydale. Ringwood’s Livesey set up their win over Park Orchards after scoring 33 goals for the game in the 22-goal win. A huge 37 goals to Stephens made it hard for Norwood to fight back the margin, Ferntree Gully went on to get the win, 44-31. In one of the closest games across board, Wantirna Devils got the win by one goal against Kilsyth despite their comeback efforts. Closing out the round, Vermont came from being down at three quarter time to seal the win by four goals against Croydon. Division 3 began with a steady win for Mulgrave against Waverley Blues, 36-15. Whitehorse remain in the top sport after their 11-goal win over Rowville. Ringwood working hard this end of www.efl.org.au

the season, they came away with the win against Knox, 26-15. Boronia continue to show they’re finals ready after a big win against Norwood, 39-18. Upper Ferntree Gully’s win was led by Martin and Jackson’s goal scoring, they defeated Kilsyth by 32 goals. Finishing off this division, Heathmont’s strong first half cemented their win against Scoresby, 35-16. In Division 4, Nunawading were too strong for Ferntree Gully resulting in an 11-goal win. Boronia defeated Heathmont, 34-12, with Boronia’s Kemp strong in the goal circle with 25 goals. Lilydale went away with the four points after their fivegoal win. North Ringwood got off to a slow start but were able to work their way back into the game to get over the line against Upper Ferntree Gully, 31-26. The Division finished off with cruisy wins for Wantirna South Devils and Glen Waverley Hawks. Division 5 started with Lesiputty setting up her Heathmont side to their 30-18 win against South Croydon. Mitcham proved to be too strong for Coldstream White with a 10-goal win going their way. A close game for all four quarters ended in a Ringwood win over Wantirna South, 24-20. Gray’s shooting display for Norwood got them over the line against The Basin by 14 goals. South Belgrave had four different goalers for the game with each of them making the goals matter in their win against Coldstream, 51-13. Division 6 saw Knox get another win on the board after they defeated Glen Waverley Hawks by six goals. Park Orchards still holding onto to a top four spot after they defeated Mulgrave, 28-12. Montrose’s Inglese scored 19 goals in their win against Coldstream, 32-23. Ferntree Gully were able to secure the win over Norwood, 23-17 while Nunawading remain to a be team to beat after they defeated The Basin by seven goals. Finishing off the round of the netball, Lilydale’s strong first quarter set them up for their win against Scoresby, 31-15. Looking ahead, it is looking to be quite an even playing field across all seven divisions. A couple of games to try get down to watch, Scoresby will be looking to deliver Fairpark their second loss of the season when they play Friday. Division 4 will see Ferntree Gully and Boronia face off in their third versus fourth clash. 9

LEADER YOUNG GUN By: Toby Prime (Leader Newspapers)

M

“While we’ve got a lot of players that are approaching that 100-game mark that have played four or five seasons of senior footy and really mastering their games, we’ve got some young guys like Hodges, Evan Pickering and Andrew Humphries who are 21 or under and they are improving at a rapid rate.

But beneath the experienced core has been the emergence of the next wave of talent, guiding Glen Waverley on a 12-game winning run and into premiership favouritism.

“It’s a bit of everything there, it’s not just the recruits, I think it is the fact the guys have worked hard to make themselves better.”

UCH has been made of Glen Waverley Hawks’ senior recruits.

Former St Kilda player Matthew Ferguson and returning veteran Brad Riddle headlined the inclusions in the off-season.

Brandon Hodges arrived at Central Reserve from Bendigo league club Sandhurst at the start of last year through cousin Luke Broad. The 21-year-old played the majority in the seniors in 2017 but has established himself as a key plank in the Hawks’ midfield this year, earning the Round 14 nomination for the Eastern Football League Division 3 and 4 Young Gun Award. “I get asked a lot of questions a lot of the time about the recruits and impact they have had, but we wouldn’t be where we are without that natural improvement from a lot of the list as well,” coach Ryan Flack said.

www.efl.org.au

Flack said Hodges had proven he belonged in senior football. “We’ve given him a lot more midfield time this year and he’s probably thrived on that a little bit and proved he can compete in there with some of the better players in the competition,” he said. “He’s got a natural strong build, which means long term he’s probably going to be an inside midfielder. “His improvement has just been learning how to play inside the contest and at the stoppages and mixing it with the big boys.”

ROBERT JOHNS TO MOVE ON By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

S

OUTH BELGRAVE has announced senior coach Robert Johns will step down at the end of season 2018. The official announcement was made via South Belgrave’s Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon, while the playing group had been informed previously. In his second year at the helm after joining the club at the end of 2016, Johns said the time was right to step away from coaching, citing family reasons. “I’m 50 years of age and I’ve got two young grandchildren and each Saturday my wife looks after the grand-kids while my daughter’s playing netball,” Johns said. “Some Saturdays I’m sitting there at the football watching the reserves, making some notes for the seniors or doing a little bit of stuff and I have to be honest and my thoughts wandered towards the grand-kids sometimes more than they do towards the football. “You’ve got to put some things in perspective from time to time and it does take up a lot of your time. “I have no problem in saying that I would much rather spend that time with my two grand-kids and I think most people would probably say that. “There is the real possibility of me potentially heading back overseas for work next year as well – that’s got its own permutations within the Johns household that’s got to be considered.” The club expressed it is “extremely satisfied with where we are at with our rebuild and approach to the new EFL divisional structure for 2019” in its official statement. “I think everyone that has an involvement, they all should have that desire to leave the place in a better position than when they started – I’d like to think I’ve contributed to that in some way, shape or form,” Johns said. “When I started there, we were playing out of shipping containers and no club rooms to now the club rooms that we’ve now got, that’s definitely a better spot than what it was when we started and I think the playing group’s in a little bit better position.” Johns, whose side currently sits 11th on the Division 3 ladder with just three wins, said 2018 has been a “character-building” season. “Just as we got our maiden signing, our captain, Liam Kidd on the park, we lost two or three the very next week I think it was,” he said. 12

The Eastern Footballer

“It’s been different but I think the guys have come a long way in this last month or five weeks. “They’ve put together some really good performances, one or two that weren’t that flash but we do understand that with a young football side, continuity is one thing that’s a little bit hard to maintain. “When they get that little bit more experience, that’s part of the experience to be able to get some fluency and some continuity in your performances.” The Saints have recorded victories over Chirnside Park, Waverley Blues and Warrandyte this season and play Chirnside Park, The Basin, Ringwood and Donvale in their remaining four games off the back of an 18-point loss to Ferntree Gully last week, after running finals-bound Boronia to within a point in Round 11. “We were really disappointed with how we played last week given what we’ve done in the last five or six weeks and that takes nothing away from Ferntree Gully in the slightest but we were genuinely disappointed as a playing group,” Johns said. “I think there were a few of our players, believe it or not, sitting second-last on the ladder, and a month of good football, may have got a little bit ahead of themselves. “We’ve got a plan that if we present ourselves properly in the way that we know we should and can in the next four games, two or three of those games are what I would call ‘get-able’ games. “The real litmus test for us, Ringwood, beat us by about 120 points last time we played them so if we could substantially eat into that margin and reduce that considerably against that sort of side, then that would be considered as a really good step forward for the club as well.” OFFICIAL CLUB STATEMENT: “We would like to formally announce that our senior coach Robert Johns has decided to stand down after two seasons as senior coach at season’s end. Johnsy joined the club at the end of season 2016 with a clear strategy to ‘stabilise’ the club and promote youth where possible. The club is extremely satisfied with where we are at with our rebuild and approach to the new EFL divisional structure for 2019. We take this opportunity to thank Johnsy and wish him well in seeing out the remainder of the season. The club is now actively looking at season 2019 appointments.”

DIVISION 1 EAST RINGWOOD: A sunny day at Morton Park saw our Development Squad match it with a strong Blackburn outfit for most of the day. We played some good footy and were certainly not blown out of the water. Cal Pirera was one of many who cracked in hard for the entire 4 quarters.

The Seniors went into the game, again without our number one ruckman and matched the in-form Burners after a slow start. Once again, our inability to hit targets was costly despite matching them in most KPI’s. They were simply too classy up forward. Alex Urban and Jack Sandric gave us great drive and were our best. We host Balwyn after a week off looking for a big effort in response to a poor one in the corresponding clash earlier in the season. Diary Dates: Saturday, July 28: Fantastic Sportsperson’s Lunch featuring Doug Hawkins, Wayne Harmes, Moana Hope, Andrew Harrison and Len Cumming. $50 includes lunch while $100 includes lunch and all beverages between 12 and 2:30. Christmas in July follows at 7:30pm Saturday, August 11: Huge Ladies’ Luncheon as we host the Bulldogs. Details as above with Bec. DIVISION 1 ROWVILLE: What a day for footy last Saturday was!

ROWVILLE

As always, our U19s got the day going and got off to a great start in the first quarter. Although Balwyn was able to settle into the game and they were able to get the win over us by 10 points.

Senior Coach: John Brown Res Coach: Travis Forbes Ground: Seebeck Oval, Stud Rd, Rowville. (Melways 81 H7) Ph: 9795 6891. Colours: Brown and gold vertical stripes, brown shorts.

The Development side followed and had a huge win over the Tigers. A 5 goals to 1 first quarter set us up for a total of 18 goals to Balwyn’s 6 at the final siren. We came away with a comfortable 80-point win. The sun remained out for the Senior game where we found ourselves having a bit of a slow start. We then managed to keep Balwyn to just 1 goal for the second half whilst we kicked 8 majors. We came away with the four points after the 38-point win. Round 14 will see the split round for us, we have a break for the first week. You’ll see all 3 sides host Montrose down at Seebeck on the 28th! Don’t forget to support our Rowville Hawks Netballers on a Friday night and get involved with our new Senior Women’s team! Contact the club for more info. COACH OF THE MONTH – JUNE Auskick Coach – Brad Eley (Croydon Blues Auskick)

Youth Coach – Jamie Prendergast (The Basin) Under-16 Girls

Brad took on the role of Auskick coordinator to help with the development of all kids and to encourage their path towards junior football at Croydon Junior Football Club. Brad helped last year and saw huge potential in the club. CJFC’s 2018 Auskick program run by Brad has been well-received, with strong numbers and great attendances at all sessions this season. Our program is growing in strength and we are hopeful of fielding an U8s team in season 2019 thanks to the efforts of Brad and all his helpers at this season’s CJFC Auskick.

Jamie has good communication skills, relaying clear messages to the girls on how to play the game. Jamie creates a calm learning environment that is ideal for player development. Jamie’s commitment to his coaching and developing himself is outstanding. He has attended several coaching courses and delivering it to the girls in perfect detail. He has a positive pleasant and engaging manner and well-respected by all.

Junior Coach – Paul Harman (Blackburn) Under-10 and Under-13

With Luke’s previous stint at Eastern Ranges coaching and a distinguished playing career, he has brought that knowledge and experience of football from a higher level and has been able to add this effectively to South Croydon’s game plan from last year. Luke has that ability to know when to deliver the right message and has that connection with players to keep it fun at the same time as having a very professional set up. Having a teaching background has been an asset of Luke’s and his planning is second-to-none, putting in an enormous amount of time planning (especially over pre-season). From committee down to players, Luke has been well-received since day one. Taking on a role that many would have found too much of a challenge, Luke is getting better and better each week especially with the challenges of selection and managing a large playing list.

Paul’s extensive experience as a player, assistant and coach has enabled him to effectively pass down his knowledge to the teams he coaches. Paul demonstrates great communication skills, brief and to the point. His ability to keep the young players engaged is outstanding. Paul is highly-regarded at the Blackburn football Club. So much, the club approached him to coach U13s as well as U10s, which fortunately for the club he accepted and has done an outstanding job for both teams.

Youth Coach – Scott Barnes (Norwood) Under-18 Girls Scott has been fantastic for the girls this year. He is always looking for new ideas to keep the girls focused and engaged, constantly trying out different drills. Scott is extremely well-received by players and parents and always has time to listen to the girls and parents and makes time with the families after the games to have a chat to individuals. He shows outstanding commitment through supporting his team by turning up to coaching, games and social events, even when severely injured.

DIVISION 2 MULGRAVE: This week after the bye we welcome Upper Ferntree Gully to our home ground to play them for the second time this season, 2 weeks ago we played Mooroolbark at Mooroolbark, where we secured our first Seniors win. Under 19’s We knew early in the week the trip to Mooroolbark for the 19’s was going to be tough. We started the game with just 18 and with a few injuries, we played a lot of the game with just 17 on the field (not all fit). Having 6 major outs was always going to be tough to cover. To the boys credit who took to the field, every single one of them gave their all. We got caught napping in the first, the second and third quarters we quite close. It was the last that saw us struggle to score, with only 16 fit on the field. We anticipate the 6 injured players to be back after the bye, so hopefully we can finish off the season strongly. Reserves We headed over to Mooroolbark this week and found ourselves playing on a good ground under sunny skies which was a great change from the previous weeks. We welcomed back a few players this week including Sam McRae, Josh Catros, Liam Peterson and Rob Draper and we will hopefully gain a few more players over the next few weeks. I would like to thank Lachlan for filling in for us and helping out along with Zac Boney, it is greatly appreciated as we have struggled for numbers each week. Also if anybody knows someone who would like to do the running for us it would be of great assistance as we have struggled to have a runner each week and this makes it hard to coach our players. Our first half was very good and we displayed a very positive game plan and attack on the football. Our intensity was matching Mooroolbark’s and we managed to be only a couple of goals down at half time which was pretty good seeing as this team has only lost one game for the year. We did this by using quick ball movement, making smart decisions with the football and setting up the structures that allow us to compete. We also manned up when we didn’t have the football which cuts down the options for our opponents. In the second half we did not display these attributes and it cost us dearly on the scoreboard. Not making excuses but when you cannot rotate your players off the ground by the last quarter they run out of legs despite giving their best efforts for the whole game. We stuck at it for the whole game and look forward to next week where we should have some more players to support our guys. We can compete with the best teams but not for four quarters and we are working on this as a group. Our best players were Josh Catros, Sam McCrae, Christian, Hamish, Liam, Sam Trev, Mike Rouskas and big Blake who had an outstanding game in the ruck. Seniors Two weeks ago we wen off to Heights Reserve Mooroolbark. A nice sunny day which is always great for football. We started slowly with the Barkers having full control of the play. We just couldn’t get our hands on the ball for the first half of the quarter. A little of the same in the second term. Our ball use was a little ordinary and decision making could of been better. In the 2nd half, composure with the ball was better and to spread the opposition as we did was pleasing. Our tackling pressure picked up and turnovers in our forward half gave our forwards a chance to put a score on the board. Kicking the first goal in the last quarter gave our boys a sniff of victory. With Baxter kicking truely at the 25 min mark it was a frantic last 3 mins of the game. With both sides trying to get possession, one side trying to kill the game the other side wanting possession finally the siren sounded and Mully came out 4 point winners for our first win of the season. Congratulations to all involved. Great team effort. Upcoming Social Events We have a number of upcoming social events and look forward to members and friends getting together for a great time. July 28th: Today is our Ladies Lunch, still time to venture to our club rooms and attend August 11th: Past Player 10 Year Grand Final Reunion, Open to all past players. Please lock in the date. August 31st: Business Network Lunch. One of our most popular events of this year. This year we have Tom Mitchell of Hawthorn a strong Brownlow contender and his father Barry, a 221 game veteran attending as our special guests. Please book your tickets early. Go Mully!!

UPPER FTG: Today the seniors take on Mulgrave after a well deserved week off after a fantastic day last game knocking off Doncaster East by 7 points with the reserves and U19’s also winning. The juniors played their last round last week and tomorrow start finals with 2 teams playing Elimination Finals, the U17D side up against The Basin at Mt Waverley and the U14B side playing Kilsyth at Koonung Reserve. The seniors game was a roller coaster all day with both sides having control at different stages, but with the scores level at 3 quarter time Upper Gully proved too strong with Tom Meagher again named best alongside Justin Laughlin and Fletcher Dodds. Congratulations to Brad Kelleher on playing his 50th game for the club. The reserves have now moved to 3rd on the ladder after a good win with Carmine Porcaro kicking 5 goals and Lewis Ferguson, Craig Bridle and Patrick Bullock named best, while big Tom Robinson looked good playing his first reserves game after also playing in the earlier game. Rory Bailey returned from injury kicking 3 goals in the U19’s win with Liam McKernan, Jarryd Bowler and Sam Vance amongst the best players. The Vets were in the normal position of starting a game without a full side against North Ringwood at Kings Park last game but managed to kick the first goal and with a couple of late comers put in a good performance finishing with 4 goals against one of the better sides in the comp who in the end were able to win comfortably. Best players included Shannon Graham, Jason Zinnow, Quinton Bloxham and Josh Maroney. Tomorrow they are away at South Croydon. Last week the women’s team had a good win against Knox with Amanda Fage and Sarah Rhode named as best. Today they are at Kings Park against The Basin. In the Netball the Red team had their first loss of the season last week while the Blue team had a win to remain in 5th place on the ladder. Tonight is the Annual Ladies Night; which is always a highlight of the season while other upcoming functions include the Trivia Night on the 4th August and the Masquerade Ball on the 18th August. DIVISION 2 MITCHAM: From a pure game day sense, it wasn’t our greatest weekend a fortnight ago against Wanny Sth. Netball girls went down by a couple of goals but then reversed the result last week knocking off the top of the table Coldstream to really put themselves in the mix. Under 19s perhaps got a head of themselves and lost a game against The Devils who simply wanted it more, although bad kicking for goal didn’t help the cause. Reserves got shown a clean pair of heels from start to finish going down by 49 points. Seniors had their chances trailing by only 11 points at ¾ time but a terrible last quarter where Wanny Sth banged on 8 goals to one cost them dearly going down by 58 points. Today we welcome our very generous and loyal sponsors to the club with our annual Sponsors day lunch with Collingwood legend Dane Swan as our special guest. Like all clubs, sponsorship is very important in the day to day running of the club and The Mitcham Football clubs goal is to recognize our sponsors in the very best possible way, NOT only throughout the football season, but 12 months of the year. Welcome also to the Park Orchards football club, we hope you enjoy our hospitality before, during and after today’s game. The MND Ladies lunch NEXT Saturday with Neale Daniher is shaping up as one of the biggest events ever held on game day at our club. With over 250 ladies in attendance in a Marquee on the netball court, we owe Phil Hine from Hine Hire a BIG THANK YOU who has helped to make this happen, along with our Major Sponsors Noel Jones Mitcham, Colourtech and Networkpak for their support. Please also save the dates for the major draw Saturday 18th August and Presentation night Thursday night 27th September. Good luck to our junior teams who kick off their finals tomorrow. There’s been plenty happening around the club recently, including our 130th anniversary dinner and the proposed 3.95 million dollar Reno at the MCG of the East. Head to our official MFC face book page @mitchamfootballclub and Official Website www.mitchamfc.com for all these stories and more #strongandbold

PARK ORCHARDS: After having the week off to freshen up, we head to Mitcham today to play at the MCG of the East. This is another must win game for the club as we reflect on an interesting month in football at the Shark Tank. Coming off three straight losses and being ravaged by injury, the seniors were in a bit of a slump and needed something special against the top of the table Lilydale side. But, as the cliché goes, you can only “take it one week at a time” and whilst we weren’t playing the type of football we would have liked, there is always a chance the following week to redeem yourself, and redeem ourselves we did. Lilydale play a slick and quick brand of footy, but the boys were able to break down this game style with relentless “Richmond like” pressure whilst moving the ball down the ground with great speed and skill themselves. We ran out eventual 26 point winners in a game where we played great team football, sharing the ball by hand to release a runner and moving the ball quickly. The D-squad play a similar style of footy and easily accounted for Lilydale’s seconds by 59 points. The U19A’s went down by nine points to second placed Lilydale. The competition at the top of the ladder is hot in the U19’s with little between the top three sides so it will be a very interesting run through to the finals. The U19B’s had the bye when the other three sides played Lilydale two weeks ago and were the only team to play in last weekend’s split round where they played East Burwood and ran out 89 point winners. We are fortunate to have two U19 sides and both teams are providing an opportunity for boys to play senior football. Eight U19’s have played senior footy this season in the “ones” and no fewer than 10 of our junior U17’s have played a game or two with the senior club in one of our U19 sides. This underlines the pathway that the club is able to provide to its junior players. In netball news, the netball home and away season ended last week with our three sides finishing seventh, eleventh and fourth. We wish our PO Black side all the best as they play off in the Division 6 finals series. Next week we play East Doncaster at home in a game that could define our season, so let’s get a big crowd to Domeney Reserve to cheer on the boys. #gosharks!

EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) R12 vs MURRAY BUSHRANGERS MURRAY BUSHRANGERS - 10.12.72 EASTERN RANGES - 7.4.46 The Eastern boys traveled the few hours up the freeway to Shepparton with one goal - to claim the four points over the thirdplaced Murray Bushrangers.

The game was still there to be won in the final quarter - but a few 50-metre penalties here, a missed target there - all proved to be our undoing in a disappointing second half. Especially after such a bright and promising first half where the possibility of returning home with a win was alive. The final margin of defeat was 26 points.

Belief amongst the players was high, and with the coach’s message of ‘just play the game’ fresh in their minds, they responded to Murray’s first goal with the next four of the quarter.

Best players for Eastern were Lachlan Stapleton, Mitch Mellis, James Blanck, Kye Quirk, Jarrod Gilbee, and Bailey White.

The lead was 19 points at quarter time, but Murray were able to win the second quarter and bring it back to ten points at the main break. A fantastic dribble goal from the boundary right on the siren gave the boys some extra spirit going into the break.

B White 3

Unfortunately, that was where it all stopped. The third quarter was a disaster, held scoreless while Murray kicked 3.6 - and in the end somewhat lucky that they missed plenty of chances.

DIVISION 3 TEMPLESTOWE: Heritage Round against Heathmont Round 15 and today there is a Reunion of the “Dominant Era: 1965 - 74” in the Diamond Valley at Porter St. Reflecting on last weeks results against The Basin away, our U19’s continue to be competitive in this second half of the season winning with the last kick of the day. The Stowe took an early lead but the Bears fought back to start the last term trailing by 1 point. The Dockers won by a narrow 4 points, Luke Fitzsimons with 2 goals kicking the winner and nominated BOG. The Reserves started well but with limited numbers could not stem the tide falling behind further at each change. Jacob Pylka and Josh Waters 2 goals each, BOG to Rob Swan who rucked well throughout. The Senior side needed to secure a victory against the Bears to keep the chance of Finals alive – at half time it was all square. The second half saw the Bears take the lead and the final score saw the Dockers go down by 31 points. Mark Pallozzi and Daniel Cripps 2 goals each and Jesse Wilson BOG. 3 of our younger brigade making their debut against a tough opposition. Beanies are still on sale but going fast. Thanks to sponsors Cambridge, Jellis Craig, PSC Insurance, Emerge Health and Maximus Catering. GO STOWE. “Tempy Footy, we love it”– CQR.

HEATHMONT: Today the teams travel to Templestowe and can’t afford to let our guard down at all with finals just around the corner. Good Luck to all teams. It was a big day down at the Hangar last week. It was great to see some familiar faces down the club for the annual Past Players Day, celebrating three milestone Premiership wins of the past and other achieves over the past 60 years. While there was reminiscing watching replays inside, there was action a plenty on the field. It was always going to be a tough match against Boronia in all three games as they too fight for consolidation of positions in the final five. The Under 19’s result would see one of the team’s gain a one game break and second spot on the ladder. The boys got off to a good start with a 5 goal to 1 quarter which set up the match, although they didn’t have it all their own way, they did come home with the win and second spot on the ladder. The DSquad welcomed a few new faces and some from injury and were out to turn the tables on Boronia after the loss they suffered first time around. This game would also help shape the ladder as both teams were equal on points with only percentage separating the two. It was a repeat of the game prior, with the Squad jumping out of the blocks with a 6 goal to 1 quarter, a lead that Boronia tried but couldn’t chase down, and it was a 50point win to the boys and outright third spot on the ladder. Next was the BIG game of the day but unfortunately the tables were turned in the Senior’s game, with the opposition kicking 6 goals to 0 in the first, as the big crowd looking on in stunned silence. The boys snapped out of the fog in the second to kick themselves back into it. But after half time goals were hard to find by both teams and although the Jets continued to pepper the goals and narrow the gap, when the siren rang it was an agonising 4 point loss which gives Boronia a three game break on us. The Women’s team found it hard going against Norwood who broke away in the second quarter to set up a match winning lead. On Friday the netballers won two and lost two but with three of the teams in finals contention as the countdown is on. The Juniors played their last home and away game in the boys comp last weekend with the U11, U12B’s and U14’s all securing a place in finals action tomorrow. The Girls comp finishes this Sunday and our U12’s are well positioned to see some finals action. SOCIAL NOTES: MR HEATHMONT is on TONIGHT see Sinders and Pedders for last minute tickets. RINGWOOD: Last weekend we took on Warrandyte for the first and only time for the season and came away with two strong victories. The Reserves were strengthened with senior players returning to the field after long term injuries and with some key forwards to aim for displayed some of their best form for the season. We established an early lead and increased it at each break and in the end ran out comfortable winners and kept our slim finals hopes alive. The Seniors were made to work hard in the first half by a dogged opposition who were intent on making it difficult for us and in a low scoring first half we held a narrow lead at the main break. We had the majority of play in the second half and peppered away at the goals only to see us waste the majority of opportunities and our final score of 8 gaols 26 behinds displayed the frustration shown by all. Despite the inaccuracy in front of goals there were plenty of positives to come out of the game and the victory still sees us undefeated and sitting on top of the ladder and we have now defeated all other 11 teams this season.

Saturday nights Annual Ball proved to be a big success and we thank everyone for their attendance and the sub committee who put the night together. Our next event is our major fundraiser for the year being the 5k draw being held on Saturday August 11 in the clubrooms from 7.00pm. Please get behind this event and ensure its a big success by selling and buying your allocated tickets and for full details and further tickets please see Nick Macklin.

Today as Kenny Rogers once said’ we’re on the road again’ as we travel to tackle Scoresby in what should be two good games of local football. The Reserves need to keep their winning run going for a finals berth whilst the Seniors aim for 15 on the trot in a top of the ladder clash. We are looking forward to todays games and the rooms will be open back at Jubilee Park so we invite all supporters to join us for after match drinks and awards and hopefully celebrate another couple of victories.

WARRANDYTE: After the round against South Belgrave where we were extremely ordinary, we played host to the undefeated ladder leader Ringwood on our home ground. It was to be tremendous challenge. Many changes were made at the selection table and the magnets were shuffled. Amongst the changes were Luke Parker who was passed fit from injury, Luke Brewis returned to the ones for the first time this year as well as son of a gun Campbell Prior, who was brought in for his senior debut. We got off to a fantastic start kicking the first two goals as we made our intentions clear that Ringwood was not going to have time to breathe and would be made to earn every possession. The intensity was contagious. For three quarters we pushed the ladder leaders and went into the last quarter with only a 10 point deficit. We were crippled in the last with injuries and were down to 17 on the ground but not at any stage did they give in. I am so proud of our boys and we know we can match it with the best. Next week on August 4 sees the annual Presidents/ Sponsors Lunch featuring Collingwood Legend Tony Shaw as guest speaker. All details and bookings through our website. www. Warrandytefc.com. DIVISION 4 FOREST HILL: We made the long trek to Coldstream with the need to get back on the winning side of the ledger as recent losses had made both Seniors and Reserves ladder positions a lot more precarious. Our Netballers were also back in action, although White had a bye and the two teams in action split their results with Green going down whilst Zebras had a good win. We are hoping that we can have more than one Netball side make finals but will need things to go our way with only 3 games of the regular season remaining. On the big ground at Coldstream the Reserves got off to a flying start and kicked very accurately to pile on the early goals. We went on with it after half time and ensured a percentage boosting win which keeps us a game clear of the chasing pack. Strachan kicked 8 goals to be our main avenue of attack, but the goals were shared around. This competition is very even and with only 2 games covering the top 4 ladder spots we need to keep racking up wins to maintain our position and give ourselves the best opportunity of securing the double chance. The Seniors were desperate for a win with back to back losses stalling our momentum and injuries testing our depth. The game was even all day and the lead changed back and forth as neither side could get a match winning break. We trailed deep into the last quarter but kicked a couple of late goals to secure the 4 points. The goal kicking was also shared around with Johnston, Taylor, Cardamone and Laws kicking 3 goals apiece. Congratulations to one of the stalwarts of our backline Dean McGuire who played his 100th game. After a brief lull the social calendar fires up again with our Cocktail night on July 28th. Our social committee has worked hard to put this night together and it looks like being a cracker with some games, our resident DJ and food all for $10. Make sure to put this one in your diary. This week sees all our Netballers back in action and the footballers in games which will have a big impact on our season. Our Seniors are 2 games clear in 4th spot with the Reserves only a game clear in second spot so we need to keep up the intensity as we play host to Whitehorse Pioneers who sit in 2nd spot and their Reserves in 5th. Whitehorse will be desperate to take it up to us and secure the best possible ladder spot. In recent times the contest between both sides have been epic and we are hoping for another set of great games today. With so much on the line Fraser Place is the place to be as the Zebra faithful try and get us home for 2 wins. Go Zebs!

DIVISION 4 KILSYTH: Kilsyth made our way to Whitehorse with two very important games in hand. The reserves put on a blistering performance in an important 8 point games. They now go into the last four rounds two games clear of fifth position and confidence growing. The seniors unfortunately did not come to play on Saturday and were missing enough willing to take the game on and bring their mates with them. Diamond in the rough was the performance from Ryan Stevens who was given his first opportunity at senior football since making Kilsyth his home this year. He was one who I personally had reservations about being able to step up, and now am looking forward to seeing what else he is capable of. Thankfully the boys rallied to earn back some respect in the last quarter and pegged back what was to be a three figure defeat. There is now only one road to finals and that is victory. We need four from four to stand a chance and this writer is not ready for the fat lady to sing yet. Good luck to all red and black this weekend!!!

EAST BURWOOD: Last Saturday saw Nunawading as the visitors to the East Burwood Reserve. Both the reserves and seniors recorded comprehensive wins to keep on track for the finals series. Two strong team performances on the day with the standout individual being Adrian Gileno with a 12 goal haul. The Under 19’s faced a strong Park Orchards side and went down by 109-20. An undisciplined second quarter would prove decisive to the final result. As we approach the last four rounds of the season now is a good time to thank the countless volunteers who donate their time each week to the club. Getting three teams playing each week would simply not be possible without the generosity of these club volunteers. The gatekeepers, timekeepers, runners, video operators, canteen and bar staff, medics and all the others who perform the numerous tasks involved in local footy. Our club has endured a torrid period over the last six years and these volunteers have continued to show up week in week out. In season 2018 they are finally seeing some reward for their efforts. The club has been awarded 3rd Division finals this year and once again it will be the work of the committee and club volunteers that will be required to make this happen. GLEN W HAWKS: The Hawks hosted Surrey Park at home, with our Seniors looking to go 12 straight and the Reserves looking to scalp a win from one of the top placed teams in the competition. The Reserves played first, with perfect conditions and good vibes in the playing group took it up to the opposition in a tight contest that saw Surrey taking a lead into the break, but the boys were still closely in the contest. After half time, and coming out ready to take it right up to the away team, the boys played some strong footy, able to take the lead in the fourth quater and hold on to win by 12 points. A.Azzopardi kicked 5 goals and dominated in the foward line, and N.Dore controlled the midfield and pressured hard all day. The Seniors ran on next, looking to continue the winning streak and took control early holding the lead all day. A late challenge by Surrey Park was controlled and the boys took the win to make it 12 straight and now sit a game on top of the ladder. B.Huxtable held strong in defence and M.Ferguson kicked 3 in another dominating prefirmance down foward. SILVAN: Last weekend saw a great turnout for our 2007/2008 premiership side and many stories were shared with them and the current playing group. In another great performance by both seniors and reserves we can now boast our most productive win/ loss season since 2014. Having won 4 of the past 5 we can certainly head into 2019 with renewed confidence whilst we continue our aim of shaping the top four. Today sees another challenge ahead, taking on Surrey Park away in all 3 grades. We look forward to a great contest again starting off with the Colts who have booked a spot in this year’s finals series followed by the reserves who are still a mathematical hope of doing the same. To all our members please keep an eye out on our Facebook page for upcoming events and functions over the next month starting next week with our major raffle. Also don’t forget to book your spot for this year’s Presentation Night which will be held at Crown Casino. Get in touch with the club if you’re planning on coming along to this highly anticipated event. Good luck to all players today, Go Cats!
