INSIDE THE EFL We’re about the game, not the odds This week the Eastern Football League is joining with AFL Victoria and a host of other football leagues across Victoria in helping to raise Phil Murton awareness of the EFL Chief Executive Officer Victorian Responsible Gambling’s Foundation ‘Love The Game‘ sporting club program. The message of the week is ‘Love The Game, Not The Odds’. Clubs such as Bayswater, Wantirna South, Waverley Blues and Nunawading are already on board to educate their players. Our partnership with the VRGF is one we are very proud of. With a website that has in excess of 15 million page views per year, the League has at times in the past had the opportunity to benefit financially from this form of advertising. The Board made a conscious decision to not accept this given our constituency and commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment across all or media channels. With the current prevalence in gambling advertising and easy access through online accounts, we think the ‘Love The Game‘ program is a great fit for the League and our clubs to be part of to educate young men and women on the risks and pitfalls associated with gambling. Combined with the Good Sports Program and other initiatives clubs are running, it sends a strong message to the community on the environment our clubs are trying to create for the young people involved. It’s a program that doesn’t say don’t bet, but just think about when and how much, an important message given the opportunities for gambling these days. For a club to sign up to the Charter, apart from not being sponsored by a betting

organisation, the main feature they have to commit to is having a short education session for their players. As you go about your business this week, I encourage you to take some notice of the amount of times you see or hear advertising related to gambling. It’s not until you consciously look for it that you realise how prevalent it is. And it’s the impact that this significant subconscious exposure has that is the unknown concern for us all, given many are in mediums that young people can and do access. I gave it a try last Friday. Going about my normal daily business, I heard or saw gambling advertising an extraordinary 40 times throughout the day. Much of that time, such as driving in the car or watching the footy, my three young boys were with me. In what may be a sign of things to come, I read recently that the Italian government had put a blanket ban on all forms of gambling advertising. We’ve all read the unfortunate high-profile stories of problem-gambling involving former AFL players David Schwarz, Brendan Fevola, Brent Guerra, Daniel Ward and Daryn Cresswell. It would be naïve to think stories like these aren’t happening amongst our friends and teammates. As people who know me would attest, I’m no wowser. While I’ve never been a big punter, I enjoy the occasional bet and odd day at the races, am a member of the MRC at Mornington and try to attend a few race meetings over the summer. But since being involved with the VRGF, my awareness of gambling advertising has increased and has shocked me. As my little experiment last week showed me that the saturation and normalisation of gambling advertising is mind blowing. Something needs to change or something will give. If you or someone you know has a problem with gambling, you can call Gambler’s Help on 1800 858 858 or Gambler’s Help Youthline on 1800 262 376.

THE FIVE By: Matt Fotia Twitter: @fotiamatt

I

t has been a massive week in the Eastern Football League with the finals calculators out in force. It’s all about who’s back in the mix, who’s fallen out of the mix and everything else in between. Here’s five things we learnt from last weekend’s action… Tiger-train runs out of steam At half time in the weekend’s clash with Rowville, Balwyn looked set to lock up its eighth victory of the year, knocking off its main rival for the final spot in the five. The Tigers then went on to lose the second half eight goals to one, courtesy of Jackson McDonald who finished with two goals in his best afield performance. The Tigers finished the day in seventh place, (thanks to the free-wheeling Wooders) both percentage and a couple of games behind their counterparts in the top five. The Tigers may wish that they could go back and rethink their assessment of season 2017 once again. The Tigers must have believed that they were on the precipice of another premiership after their second-placed finished last season, perhaps blaming their straightsets exit on the injuries that ravaged their list. Balwyn evidenced this belief when it parted ways with then-coach Marty Pask in January for now-coach Rodney Eade. In hindsight it seems that the Tigers had overestimated the strength of their list and their likelihood of winning the premiership. Add onto this the no doubt sizeable cost of Eade’s services and the ever-increasing power of the EFL’s points system (limiting the number of ‘recruits’ in a playing 22) and the Tigers may have missed a trick. Rather than move with the times, and perhaps put their premiership ambitions on the backburner for a few seasons to help improve homegrown depth, the Tigers have thrown all their eggs in one basket. Unfortunately for them, their basket isn’t quite big enough this time around.

Dees send the Roos down under After its come-from-behind victory over East Ringwood last weekend, Montrose was in the box-seat to take its place at the Premier Division table next season. The Roos would be forced to pinch another unlikely victory against a side well above them on the table, or defeat Noble Park, as they had done earlier in the season. But as Saturday afternoon’s action came to a close, it seems all but official that East Ringwood will not be in the top division as of 2019, with the Demons defeating North Ringwood by five goals at home. Jordan Bastinac continued his good form with two goals and best on ground honours, whilst Billy Schilling again hit the scoreboard in the Demons’ win, with two majors of his own, as Montrose wrapped up the result with an 11-goal-to-three scoreline in the first half. The Demons can now focus on building for season 2019, practising new plans, debuting new players and most importantly playing with a freedom that may not have been there for a few years now. As we’ve seen with Croydon in Division 2, that freedom can do a myriad of things and we could see Montrose pinching a few more wins in the back end of the season, having their own little influence on that all-important top five.

The mix and Mulgrave breaks the duck Division 2 is constantly remarked as the most even division in the Eastern Football League and whilst the clear divisions on the ladder may not make that statement entirely true, we do find ourselves with an incredible four teams in the mix for the final spot in the four with just five weeks left in the regular season. Lilydale, Doncaster East and Upper Ferntree Gully have at bare minimum locked up finals footy, and with a three-game buffer on fourth you expect them to have locked up the top three spots. They’ll battle it out for the top-two over the next month or so. However, results around the divisions have seen the finals race blown wide open. Croydon’s come-from-behind away victory over Bayswater puts it at 6-6, just four points behind its latest conquest in the finals race.

The Eastern Footballer

Park Orchards stunned the Falcons, ending its dodgy run of form to grab a seventh win of the year, youngster Jane Witnish best on ground, which now leaves the Sharks in fifth on percentage, whilst Wantirna South did the business over Mitcham, and despite having been written off countless times in this column, also finds itself just percentage behind Bayswater. The Blues are on a strong run of form, but their poor percentage means they won’t have much room for error. Bayswater and Wantirna South are impossible to pick, whilst Park Orchards has steadied after its wobble. I’ve still got the Sharks pinching that fourth spot, as I detailed in the mid-season report cards. Don’t take it as gospel however because Division 2 still has a couple of tricks up its sleeve. A special note to those out at Mulgrave Reserve. It’s been a tough year for the Lions playing on their back oval, the whipping boys of the division this season. When they came into the main break 27 points down to Mooroolbark, you could be forgiven for thinking it was the same old story playing out again. But the Lions became the 41st side to register a win across the league on the weekend, kicking six goals to one in the second half, with George Alepidis best on ground. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Mulgrave, who will no doubt be back in thick of it in 2019.

Bears close, but still no cigar All season The Basin has showed the signs of a team ready to take the next step. The Bears have defeated everyone below them on the table, run the top side close twice and were five points down to Boronia at half time on the weekend at Batterham Reserve. They fell by the wayside once again, losing to the Hawks by 18 points. It leaves them two games behind Heathmont in fourth, with their hopes of a home final all but gone. The Bears must now concentrate on ensuring they make the finals. Despite clearly being the fifth-best side in the competition, they now find themselves level on points with Templestowe, whom they face this weekend. Despite a massive gap in percentage, the Dockers have shown a great ability to make games tight and low scoring, meaning the Basin may not able to use their superior attacking prowess. The Basin should still finish in fifth, however the Dockers could make things really interesting.

Cougars cooked It was a tough weekend for the Cougars in Division 4. Coldstream went down once again by a slim margin, this time to Forest Hill, whilst Kilsyth copped a belting from the Whitehorse Pioneers that gave its finals aspirations a big dent. Coldstream fans should be able to see the light however – coach Chad Rogers has reshaped the list, looking to a youthful future. Despite a win-loss record of 4-10, the Cougars have shown that their best footy can well and truly match it with the sides at the pointy end of the table. If they can find some more consistency and develop that wonderful habit of winning the close ones, the Cougars will be climbing back up the table quickly. They will look to build around Darcy Carrigan who yet again showed his class, kicking five goals in a best on ground showing. Kilsyth fans will be scratching their heads feverishly as their season took another dip. A chance to take a top four scalp and strengthen its finals ambitions has yet again passed by as they were on the wrong end of an eight-goal haul from Andrew Padbury, things coming to a head in the third term, when Whitehorse piled on 11 goals to none. The Kilsyth Cougars have now given Fairpark a big chance to take first blood in their race to apply pressure on the Zebras in fourth place. Kilsyth, like their Cougar counterparts, will be looking at developing consistency of its own over the next few months as it searches to find the solution to its problems. Kilsyth’s best footy is even better than that of Coldstream’s thus making consistency a bigger frustration. Kilsyth will have the added benefit of the re-structure next season, ensuring it’ll be one of the top sides in the division, but the faithful won’t be happy with that for long. EASTLAND NETBALL REVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

T

he 2018 Netball EFL is nearing the end of its home and away season with just a few more rounds left before finals begin… Taking a look at Premier/Premier Reserve, Blackburn remain in the middle of the ladder with their big 39 goal win over Norwood. Both Domingo and Matarazzo scoring 29 each for Blackburn. Montrose caused an upset after they defeated Lilydale by three goals, leading the way for Montrose was Cullimore and Arthur and for Lilydale Murphy scored 20 of their goals. Wantirna South Devils got over the line against Boronia, 53-41, Woodgate scoring 32 of Wantirna’s goals. Fairpark remain the team to beat with their steady 10-goal win over Wantirna South Devils Reserve. Scoresby remain in top four contention with a win over Mulgrave, 45-37, Kelly scoring 36 of their 45 for the game.

the top two sides resulted in a one-goal win for Whitehorse against Heathmont. A huge 34 goals for Goldsmith led Scoresby to their 16-goal win against Kilsyth. In Division 4, Heathmont’s steady four quarters got them over the line against Lilydale, 27-16, with Capron shooting 17 of their 27. North Ringwood’s Luiyf scored 17 goals and South Belgrave’s Cecchi scoring 15 for her side result in a 10-goal win for North Ringwood. Upper Ferntree Gully stay the team to beat in Division 4 after their win over Coldstream, 35-28. Forest Hill Zebras are nearly creeping in the top four after they defeated Wantirna South by eight goals. Anderson’s goalshooting for Glen Waverley Hawks proved too good for Ferntree Gully with the Hawks getting the win, 28-21. Boronia was led by Kemp who outscored Nunawading herself with 21 goals in her side’s win, 29-10.

In Division 1, Park Orchards started the round with a 20-goal win against Scoresby with Richards and Tomlins sharing the goal circle to get them over the line. An interesting result for top of the ladder South Croydon as they drew, 34 apiece with Kilsyth. Heathmont had a steady win against Coldstream, 29-24, whilst Williams scored 32 goals for Fairpark leading them to their 17-goal win against Blackburn. Teunissen and Hallam worked together to get their Knox side over the line against North Ringwood, 45-28.

In Division 5, South Belgrave’s 10 goals to 0 first quarter set them up for a good win against Wantirna South, 32-15. The Basin had a big win against South Croydon, Walsham scored 19 of her side’s 30 goals in their 23-goal win. In a tight one for the whole game, Norwood were able to defeat Mitcham, Gray scoring 20 goals in their 26-22 win. Heathmont stay in the top four after an easy win against Ringwood, 34-16. Coldstream white too good for their buddies in Coldstream black. Both the Jakobs girls leading the way for the white team in their win, 46-19.

Division 2 remains a close one for a spot in the top four, Norwood upset the strong Vermont side by five goals. Lilydale had a huge win against Park Orchards, 53-14, Neagle with 34 goals and McMenamin on 19 for the game. Ringwood were able to get the four points after defeating Forest Hill by five goals. Top four sides in Croydon and Ferntree Gully battled it out and, in the end, Croydon came out on top by just 2 goals. Kilsyth defeated The Basin 40-33 and Knox’s Harfield’s 25 goals lead to her side’s win against Wantirna, 46-19.

Over in Division 6, Nunawading are still going strong with their 18-goal win against Scoresby. The Basin were able to just get over the line against Ferntree Gully by two goals in a low scoring game. A big scoring effort from Hinchcliffe for the Glen Waverley Hawks with 37 goals for the game as they defeated Lilydale, 48-27. Knox caused an upset after they defeated Park Orchards, 21-18. While Mulgrave had a walk in the park getting themselves a 30-goal win against Coldstream and closing out the round was Montrose who defeated Norwood, 29-25.

Mulgrave got the round going in Division 3 with an easy win against Norwood, 43-27, Hoskin again being the best scorer on the court. In a close battle, Rowville was able to come out on top against Knox by five goals. Waverley Blues got a good win on the board against Ringwood, 30-23, Glare scoring 22 of their goals. Boronia were able to get the win against Upper Ferntree Gully despite their best efforts at a comeback, 24-21. A low scoring game between

Looking ahead, Friday night sees a couple of big clashes in terms of ladder positions and they will be worth checking out. Premier/Premier Reserve will see a top two clash between Wantirna South and Fairpark. Over in Division 2, another top two play off in Croydon and Vermont. While over in Division 6, a top placed Mulgrave will face a fourth placed Park Orchards. Looking forward to seeing the results as we near the end of the season!

LEADER YOUNG GUN By: Toby Prime (Leader Newspapers)

C

“It’s pretty competitive this year, very competitive for every spot at the moment, we’ve used 40 players in the seniors this year.

But Young is now making a spot his own.

“There’s a lot of experienced players running around so it is not always easy to hold your spot.”

HARLIE Young has earned his spot. In a powerhouse side, positions aren’t always easy to come by.

Young was in and out of Vermont’s best 22 in 2017, playing 10 games in the seniors and 11 in the reserves, including the grand final win over Rowville. The 20-year-old has played 10 games this year, named the Round 13 nominee for the Eastern Football League Division 1 and 2 Young Gun Award. A squeeze on players points has meant Young has had to drop back to the reserves for three games.

“We’ve all been through it when you come out of the 19s, you get a game, couple of games then you get squeezed out, come back but you’ve got to understand you just don’t immediately get into the senior side and stay there.

Young is joined by Division 3 and 4 nominee Kyle Viccars from Waverley Blues. Viccars has kicked 11 goals from his first six senior games.

But he has responded with three mentions in the best to earn an immediate recall on each occasion. Vermont club manager Lee Bidstrup said Young’s nomination was “not so much about his season but the kid himself, he’s a terrific young boy”. “A couple of times he has had that disappointment, gone back to the twos but he has just taken that as normal and just plays as he always does,” Bidstrup said. Young has played in a variety of positions, up on a wing and as a tall in defence. “He’s just a great young kid that everyone likes, he’s always positive and it is great being at a club where you see kids come up and develop, get a game, get another game and start to cement a spot in the side,” Bidstrup said.

SHARK ATTACK By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

D

ONCASTER was trailing South Croydon by 24 points at threequarter-time last weekend, yet with the final kick of the game Angelo Rambaldi slotted through the winning goal for the Sharks. Off the back of two consecutive losses from Rowville and Blackburn, the trend looked likely to continue for the Sharks, before a sixgoal-to-one final term. With just four majors registered to threequarter-time, Doncaster coach Andrew Tranquilli wanted his side to focus on wrestling back the momentum in the final term. “They (South Croydon) got a couple more goals than we had hoped but we came in the huddle and identified that it was four kicks to square the ledger and we thought we were well into it,” Tranquilli said. “What we focused on was trying to get the first score on the board to give us some momentum. “We just took it step by step and then with Angelo (Rambaldi) taking the mark towards the end with about a minute to go we told him to just take his time, don’t rush and said look if it’s a point it’s a draw and if it’s a goal, you’re a hero. “He just knew he had a job to do and he is one of our leaders, he is a part of our leadership group. “He has really been an integral part to our success, he has also been one of the players that had a go at VFL with Collingwood and Coburg the last couple of years. “We haven’t had the full amount of game time with him, but Doncaster is his club and he is a real good kid to have around.” With South Croydon contending for its second flag in a row, the Sharks knew they had it in them to stick with the Dogs for the entire match on Saturday. 12

The Eastern Footballer

“Regardless if they get a roll on and kick three, four, five or whether we get the jump on, we know both sides are good enough to roll the whole game out,” Tranquilli said. “We just had to remain composed - we were 2.10 at half time and from memory, they were 5.5. We said, we’ve got our hands on the ball and we’re having shots and we missed some easy shots. “The message was to the boys, we have to earn it - we can’t kick badly at goal, we’re too good a side not to kick goals and it’s earnt so whether that was the magic words, I’m not sure.” Doncaster ruckman Frankie McKenzie showed how much the result meant to him when he came off for a spell in the last quarter. “The boys really have heart in what we’re all about and what we’ve brought to the club,” Tranquilli said. “They really felt it out there, regardless of the scoreboard they felt we were in the game, they were there, and we just had to tidy up that one per cent.” “Just little things were starting to get to him (McKenzie) and I just had a quiet word to the big fella and he just put it all on the paddock again, so his emotions, he really rides them out strong.” Doncaster will come up against Vermont this weekend at Terrara Road and Tranquilli is confident his side will be able to take it up to them. “We haven’t come across Vermont yet but we’re pretty confident we match up well with that,” he said. “We pride ourselves to be the best metro competition going around, so every week should be a test regardless of who you are playing so we will just now review the tapes, dust ourselves off, rehab well and get ready for a big hit out next week.

VERMONT: We travelled south to Noble Park expecting the usual reception from their players, and we were not disappointed. They gave us lots to think about in the opening quarter and we did well to take over after that. We were proud to see so many of our youngsters getting a senior game, the Seniors have used 40 different players so far. The better players were Lachie Carey, Tom Maas, Brett Eddy, Tom Schneider, Cam Howat and Joey Fisher. The Reserves had plenty on their plate as well, but got the job done thanks to sheer hard work and persistence. Great to see Ryan Phillips back starting to take the big marks and Kirby McConnon resuming after his trip away. Better players were Ned Coghlan, Ryan Phillips, James Box, Brook Kainey, Shane Davidson, Kirby McConnon and Pat Wallace. The Under 19’s went down by a very determined Noble Park. Our thoughts are with young Zac Thiessen following his season ending injury, we wish him a full recovery. Better players were Taine Barlow, Damien Vassilou, Josiah Duncan, Adrian Kalcovski, Justin Ridey and Tyson Calder. Disappointing and costly that we don’t have Under 19’s today at Vermont. We wish them well over at Norwood. SOCIAL: Congratulations to Ryan Antidormi for his crowning as “Mr Vermont 2018”. Please see Brian Power and support our Mighty Eagle Raffle.

DONCASTER: Last Saturday the club’s senior team achieved a sensational win over reigning premier Sth Croydon … twice as good as a hair-cut ! They say its only two weeks between a bad hair-cut and getting it right again. Well, it took only one week for the Sharks to turn it around and achieve “Super Saturday” after the previous round’s “Weekendus Horribilis” against Blackburn !

And what a battle it was against the Bulldogs – befitting of two quality teams sitting 2nd and 3rd on the Division 1 ladder. For much of the first three quarters the opposition led the way by a couple of goals with clean, precise, well-drilled footy. We hadn’t been playing badly but with rushed forward entry and some goal inaccuracy we found ourselves 24 pts down at the last break – from the same number of scoring shots. But some Shark positivity saw it all change in the last quarter. With terrific drive from our on-ballers – led superbly by Frankie,

Nakkers and Fogs – the whole team lifted and we set about overhauling the opposition’s lead (twice) before grabbing a remarkable, heart-stopping victory by 5 points.

It certainly wasn’t easy against top opposition and it took a “Rambo ripper” from 50 metres to nail it with just 6 seconds left on the clock ! And well done also to Vanders and Shimma for a great game in defense and that 3-goal effort from elusive young Alessi.

A mountain has been successfully climbed and now today we face another “Mt Everest” at Vermont. But history says that Mt Everest can been conquered, so go Sharkers!

In the Reserves our boys battled on manfully against a tough Sth Croydon team in a %- sapping loss, but we were severely undermanned due to a solid player injury list. However, with a more favourable draw later in the season and hopefully some player returns the 5th finals place is still in sight. Hang-in there guys – the wheel will turn !

Our best players were again a good mix of promising youngsters (Barassi, Turbo-Toes Jesse and Millsy) and the experience of Valks, Jarvo and Cheesy.

Socially, a top effort by Crawf and the guys for the 1st Coterie Luncheon last Saturday.

Looking forward to the next one, after the success of big Clokey as guest speaker at this one.

DIVISION 1 NORWOOD: Norwood visited Knox last Saturday and came home with the win and a big percentage boost, winning by 115 points. Knox were up for the fight early and held us goalless for the entire first quarter, but the floodgates opened in the 2nd as we kicked 9.7 to 1.1 to take a 51 point lead into the half-time break. Leigh Williams was on fire in this quarter with 5 majors, and in reality, if we’d converted a bit better, we could easily have kicked 12-14 majors for the quarter. In the 3rd quarter we kicked a further 6.5 to 1.1, Jamie Bennell adding two really classy goals in the space of a couple of minutes to get the Norwood faithful roaring. In the last stanza we rounded off with a wildly inaccurate 5.10 to finish with 47 scoring shots but just 20 goals. You can’t be too critical of a 115 point win and 47 shots at goal, but there were many opportunities missed that we could/should have taken. Best players were Pearso, Maloney, Leroy, Bish, Horner Stewart and Sam Blease The development squad had an equally beneficial day, racking up 29.11.185 to just 2.2.14. Zak Carroll booting 7 goals from full-forward and Adam Gibson was amongst the best as well. The 19’s put up a gallant effort but were well beaten by Blackburn Go Wooders SOCIAL: NJFC Sporties Night – Fri 27th July, Major Raffle Date TBA

One draw (7 goal comeback) and one loss for the netballers. A great win to the U19s against the top team, and very solid wins to the reserves and vets. In the seniors our 9 game winning run came to an end – a second time we have been overrun by the Sharks when holding a substantial lead – something that needs to be addressed, and a reminder again that in this competition if you are not switched on and fully focused you will not get the results. Our run does not get any easier for the senior men; today we meet Norwood who is again proving a big barrier to all teams after a slow start. We cannot afford to be off our game in either team. Off field, a special evening expected tonight as we relax and celebrate at the 50th Anniversary Gala Ball, with large numbers expected. Thank you to all that have supported the evening and here’s hoping that we all have a safe and fantastic evening. DIVISION 1 NORTH RINGWOOD: Under 19’s – well what a difference a full side makes; we actually went into the game with 20 players. The first quarter saw us kick 6 goals to 1, the second quarter was a lot tighter and by the main break we had a 46 point lead. In the third quarter the opposition started to drop away and it was a 7 goal to 2 quarter. The last quarter was played out and in the end the boys won by 88pts. Who knows what next week will bring in this every changing Under 19’s team. Reserves – The reserves were basically behind all day they had patches of good footy where they look like they were about to make a charge but these moments were just too few. It was good to see the Reserves have a full side with 6 on the bench and hopefully the seconds can keep improving each week. On Saturday it wasn’t their day and they lost by 5 goals. Seniors – In what was meant to be a game we could turn our fortunes around the day started off anything but that! Our first quarter was sluggish giving up the first few goals to be behind by 21pts at the first change. The second quarter was a disaster - nothing seemed to go right as Montrose kicked 7 goals to 2 to increase their lead to 52 points the main break. A few positional changes saw a much better third quarter, 4 goals 8 to just the one goal. A bit better kicking would have really put the pressure on the opposition. By the last change the margin was cut down to 26. The last quarter was a much tighter quarter and in the end the seniors just couldn’t overcome the half time deficit and we went down by 19pts. Go Saints.

BLACKBURN: Three solid wins last week versus East Ringwood and Norwood (U19) was a pleasing outcome for the red army as all teams look to finish high up on the ladder at the end of the year. Jake Hammond had a day out and received plenty of good ball as he dominated out of the square kicking 8 goals and did some hard work up the field as well. He was well supported by an energetic Sam Hudson who kicked 4 and a great defensive effort ed by the skip Pat Contin and first year recruit Jackson Hood who has had a great year from Castlemaine. The Burners won by 10 goals. The Development squad didn’t have their best game and struggled to shake off a determined opponent who were aggressive at the ball around the contest all day. In the end it was a 6-goal win. Our Futures (U19) team welcomed back Sam Harte, Blake Tahlamboris (5goals) and Jack Kritopoulos (4goals) who all played well as the lads combined to come out winners against Norwood by 6 goals. There was much to like with the way the boys moved the ball and ran out the game and it showed the depth the squad has to compete at the highest-level week in week out. Whilst our Women Footballers had the BYE, our Netballers had mixed results with our Red’s scoring a great win against Norwood 58-19 but our Blacks coming up against a stronger Fairpark and going down by 17 on the night. Today we travel to Quambee to take on a fired up Nth Ringwood who will be keen to get back on the winners list. It is always a tough assignment but the Burners will be up for the contest. Major Raffle: Tickets ($10.00) are now available for our major fundraiser with 1st Prize being a $3,000 Holiday package in Kuta Beach BALI. COACH OF THE MONTH – JUNE Auskick Coach – Brad Eley (Croydon Blues Auskick)

Youth Coach – Jamie Prendergast (The Basin) Under-16 Girls

Brad took on the role of Auskick coordinator to help with the development of all kids and to encourage their path towards junior football at Croydon Junior Football Club. Brad helped last year and saw huge potential in the club. CJFC’s 2018 Auskick program run by Brad has been well-received, with strong numbers and great attendances at all sessions this season. Our program is growing in strength and we are hopeful of fielding an U8s team in season 2019 thanks to the efforts of Brad and all his helpers at this season’s CJFC Auskick.

Jamie has good communication skills, relaying clear messages to the girls on how to play the game. Jamie creates a calm learning environment that is ideal for player development. Jamie’s commitment to his coaching and developing himself is outstanding. He has attended several coaching courses and delivering it to the girls in perfect detail. He has a positive pleasant and engaging manner and well-respected by all.

Junior Coach – Paul Harman (Blackburn) Under-10 and Under-13

With Luke’s previous stint at Eastern Ranges coaching and a distinguished playing career, he has brought that knowledge and experience of football from a higher level and has been able to add this effectively to South Croydon’s game plan from last year. Luke has that ability to know when to deliver the right message and has that connection with players to keep it fun at the same time as having a very professional set up. Having a teaching background has been an asset of Luke’s and his planning is second-to-none, putting in an enormous amount of time planning (especially over pre-season). From committee down to players, Luke has been well-received since day one. Taking on a role that many would have found too much of a challenge, Luke is getting better and better each week especially with the challenges of selection and managing a large playing list.

Paul’s extensive experience as a player, assistant and coach has enabled him to effectively pass down his knowledge to the teams he coaches. Paul demonstrates great communication skills, brief and to the point. His ability to keep the young players engaged is outstanding. Paul is highly-regarded at the Blackburn football Club. So much, the club approached him to coach U13s as well as U10s, which fortunately for the club he accepted and has done an outstanding job for both teams.

Youth Coach – Scott Barnes (Norwood) Under-18 Girls Scott has been fantastic for the girls this year. He is always looking for new ideas to keep the girls focused and engaged, constantly trying out different drills. Scott is extremely well-received by players and parents and always has time to listen to the girls and parents and makes time with the families after the games to have a chat to individuals. He shows outstanding commitment through supporting his team by turning up to coaching, games and social events, even when severely injured.

DIVISION 2 BAYSWATER: U19’s

BAYSWATER CROYDON

The improvement continues with this great bunch of kids. The last time these 2 sides met the loss to Bayswater was 120 od points, the belief in the playing group, in their learning under Maysie’s guidance and understanding the game plan has seen this turn around to a 30 point loss this time around , final score Croydon 60 points, Bayswater 30 points.

Senior Coach: Paul McCormack Res Coach: Mark Hickinbotham Ground: Appleby Bayswater Oval, Bayswater Road, Bayswater (Melways 64 G2) Colours: Green jumper with gold vee and black shorts

Bests: Raaymaker, Capaldo, Tasic, Hunt ,Mantel and Couch. ( I cant recommend enough to come down and watch this side ) Reserves Sean’s two’s continue their march forward towards finals, guided by Mangels. Knowing the importance of the game, with the result to reflect on the race to the finals the boys took the field . With the aid of the wind they took a 2 goal lead at the end of the 1st quarter, and with a 12 point lead at the end of the 3rd. Against the wind the players knuckled down and fought out a 3 point victory. This sees them in a battle for 3rd spot on the ladder with 3 other teams. Percentage points are holding us back so look forward to a good contest up against ladder leader Mooroolbark next weekend. Bests : Vandy (must be close to senior call up), Camera, L & J Pritchard, and the 2 forwards Mitch and Trav. Seniors The seniors needed to win coming out fast in the first 20mins with a 4 goal lead however found it hard to keep up the momentum. We let them back in and were not able to get the jump on them a 2nd time. A disappointing finish saw us go down by 4 goals but we are still holding on to 4th position on ladder. Bests : Rooey, LoPo, Schroeder, Cunners, Killer and Joel. Vets This week headed out to Forest Hill to play A team which always gives us a good competitive game. Right from the 1st quarter we were switched on we got first use of the ball from Weary and we were able to deliver it to our forwards. To say we had a good day would be a understatement to win by 100 points is an amazing effort and the whole team played as one. Best players Weary, Cam, Rosie, Ethan, Cammo Go Baysie

MOOROOLBARK: Last round the Mustangs hosted Mulgrave at The Heights Reserve on a perfect day for footy. We also hosted “Ladies” Day but more on that later. The Colts got the day off to a great start with a 91 point victory over the side only one position below us on the ladder. It’s great to see the boys finding some form in the second half of the season and they have now slipped into 4th place on the ladder. Chaz Clavant booted 5 goals with Dobie & Price kicking 4 each. Dobie was awarded B.O.G. honours (again) while others in the best were Batten, Atkins, Crosby & Reynolds. The Reserves game was top versus bottom but you wouldn’t have known it at half time with the Mulgrave boys putting up a great fight. However, it was a different story in the second half as we dominated, running away with a 101 point win. Paul Hager slotted through 6 goals to earn the B.O.G. while Harper, Cutting, Bishop, EshetuMulugeta and B.Morris also featured in the best. I guess disappointment is the best way to describe the Seniors result, going down by 4 points in a game we should have won. Skipper, Sean McManus, battled hard all game and was voted best. Jeremy Neumann and Ben Dolan also gave their all. While all this footy was going on there were 129 “ladies” in the club rooms oblivious to what was going on outside as we held our annual Ladies Day. It seems these days are getting bigger and better each year and a big thanks goes out to Marci McKenny and her band of helpers for their efforts in organising it. Today we do battle with Bayswater where hopefully we can come home with 3 wins. GO MUSTANGS!!!

WANTIRNA SOUTH: Three games and three great wins against Mitcham last week. The under 19’s are playing solid team football at the minute and Saturday’s win against Mitcham was the result they deserved. Mitcham were in the 4 prior to the match, which makes the win all the more meritorious. Best players were Stone, Noy, Mesfin, Cowman, Sarinn and Wiseman. The reserves played four quarters of consistent football and ran out comfortable 59 point winners. Also, what is pleasing is that the players who come down from the senior team really put in and put their hand up for senior selection the following week. Best players were Raab, Gleeson, B Cromb, Lynch, Jackson and Brooks. The seniors encountered a Mitcham team, who recently beat second placed East Doncaster. We knew it was going to be a tough game and that it was. However, we stuck to our structures, all players gave 100% for four quarters and we ended up winning by 58 points. It was also great to see the form of last years under 19’s, who have been promoted to the senior team in recent weeks, such Daisy, Nato Denes and Grima. Well done lads. Best players were J Denes, N Denes, Silver, Wong, Greig and Graffen. Big game today against Lilydale for all sides. Put in the hard yards and the wins will come. Good luck lads.

DIVISION 2 DONCASTER EAST: Firstly apologies that there we no club notes in last week’s EFL Record. They were sent to the EFL but it would appear there are some email issues at EFL House which meant a few clubs’ notes were lost in cyberspace!

DONCASTER EAST Senior Coach: Steve Buckle Res Coach: Matt Bremner Ground: Zerbes Reserve, Blackburn Rd, Doncaster East. (Melways 34 B10) Ph: 9842 4000. Colours: Navy blue jumper, yellow lion emblem with maroon and gold hoops, blue shorts

The most important part from last week’s notes was to congratulate those that supported the “Monster Raffle”, particularly the playing group. It was a great day and again what a tremendous job by Dave Sowersby. I know Dave was concerned with the lack of support leading into the day but as usual he waved his magic wand and the day was a great success. Also a big thanks to Redders for keeping us all well fed during the day. I also had a message on today’s Ladies Luncheon “Xmas in July” so apologies to Julie for not being able to spread the word the week before the function. I am sure today’s event will be a great success. Last Saturday we headed out to Upper Ferntree Gully which ended up being a very disappointing day for the Club with all three teams missing out. Despite the disappointing results there were two highlights for the day (some would say three given the conditions at Kings Park. Probably the best we have ever seen!!) Firstly a great effort by our Under 19’s who supported our Reserves who were so low on numbers we were very close to having to forfeit. What a battle this year has been for Matty B. High injury numbers across the board and all the other availability issues he has had to deal with, something that I have never experienced before. The other highlight was the 200th game of Club.....(i am not sure what to call him as he goes by so many names mostly made up by himself) ...Rami Ayoub. Super effort Rami. You are an integral part of our Club both on and off the field and your 200 games are only a small part of your contribution to DEFC. You deserve to share in the ultimate success so let’s hope we can knuckle down and get back on track as we head into the pointy end of the season. Today we welcome Croydon the Den who have hit their straps in the last few weeks and have got themselves into finals contention. I am sure they be keen to continue on their winning way. Last time we met we were beaten easily in the early games so its promise to be a tough encounter for all three sides today so let’s get behind the boys and give them all the support they need to bring home three wins today. Good luck to all three teams today Go Lions

CROYDON: This week we travel to Doncaster East. Please note that our club rooms will be open after the game for liquid refreshments. What a magnificent win last Saturday by the seniors against Bayswater on their home ground! The boys gave Bayswater a six goal start but with 17-8 to 7-8 for the remainder of the game they came home victors 17-8 to 13-8. Fico kicked five goals, Riley Britton four and Wilko three. The seniors are now one game outside the four. The seconds with a disappointing third term went down narrowly by three points 11-3 to 10-12 and now out of the four. Matt Herman kicked five goals. Bayswater kept with our under 19’s for three and a half quarters before our boys broke free to win 8-12 to 3-10. Pembo kicked three goals. Everyone had a great time at the Annual Club Ball sweetened by the great win over Bayswater. Thanks to Megan and Pringer for organizing the function and for Zingha and Richard for looking after the drinks. The Reverse Raffle draw will be held on 4 August after the Mulgrave home game at the swimming pool log cabin rooms. If anyone wants to buy a ticket in the draw tickets are still available. Please see a committee member. We will be having a Past Players afternoon on 18 August during our last home game against Wantirna South in a special marquee being set up. DIVISION 3 WAVERLEY BLUES: Today we welcome Scoresby to Mount Waverley Reserve & hopefully have a better day than our journey to Templestowe two weeks ago. Our U/19’s came out a little complacent & suffered their first loss for the season. Development Squad recruited late to make up the numbers & Seniors were overrun in the last quarter, putting more pressure on themselves for ladder position. Social: Tonight we have our Club Trivia at Holy Family Hall. Some tickets still available. Next Sat 28th is Past Players, Life Members & 2008 premiership Reunion. August 4th a Cocktail evening at Bensons Mount Waverley. This year the Club is hosting Junior Finals & need some helpers as most of our Teams are participating. Let’s give it our best shot today with 3 wins. Go Blues-Optic

DIVISION 3 HEATHMONT: Football is back after a rest last week and welcome to all the Past Players and Officials today to the Hangar to reminisce on Premierships in the U18’s, Reserves and Seniors over the past 20 years and just to catch up with old [and new] mates. Today’s game is another big clash in a must win game against Boronia. The Seniors couldn’t get over the line against Ringwood the other week although competitive and in front at half time, Ringwood were too good in the second half. It was a very young side that took the field due to some forced changes let’s hope the week off has made a difference and we see some familiar faces returning. An undermanned DSquad continued on their winning way and thanks to the U19’s that helped on the day due to their bye. The Women’s team found it tough going for the second week in a row to try and overcome Bayswater. It’s the Juniors last game of the season before finals tomorrow we have 5 sides vying for positions to play off in the coming weeks. Please come down and show some support and stick around for the last Family night of the season. There will be refreshments available. The Netballers also only have a few matches to go before their finals and we have three out of the four teams in positions to play finals. Good Luck to all teams. SOCIAL NOTES: Have you booked your MR HEATHMONT tickets it’s on NEXT Saturday July 28th at the Hangar Try Booking. TASTEPOINT Fundraiser is on again this season we are running three sessions on Thursday 26th at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm we need 20 people per session please see Bourkie who is doing the roster. CYSTIC FIBROSIS Round will be on Saturday August 11 we hope you will support the club in their fundraising efforts for this cause close to the club’s heart. You can catch up with what’s happening around the Hangar on Facebook and don’t forget to visit www.heathmontjets.com Go Jets!

RINGWOOD: Our last round of football was a big day for the club with a huge crowd in attendance to watch the battle against Heathmont with The Parker Cup again up for grabs. We welcomed back to Ringwood our past players and officals with the main focus being on the reunion of our 1976 2nd Division and 1978 Ist Division premiership sides. It was great to see all those in attendance and it proved to be a successful day with the celebrations going late into the night with current days players swapping stories with our past champions who saw the Seniors continue their un beaten run to the season with another good victory. Despite the boys trailing at half time they came out hard in the third term to take control of the game and dominated the second half to make it thirteen on the trot and retained the cup at Jubilee Park. The Reserves put up a good display despite their loss with a spirited display against the top team. We matched it in most departments around the ground and it was only our in ability to convert up forward which was the difference between the sides. Tonight we are holding our Annual Ball and we thank the sub committee for their work in making the event possible and trust everyone enjoys the night and represents the club in the right manner. Our major fundraiser for the year being the 5k draw is coming up on August 11 so please support this event by selling your allotted tickets and for further details and tickets see Nick Macklin. Today we travel to Warrandyte and hope our good form continues for the Seniors and the Reserves can get back on the winners list. Good luck to all players and coaches and hopefully we can celebrate a couple of victories at the Ball tonight.

DIVISION 4 SILVAN: A significant day awaits us today as we welcome a number of guests for various reasons. We take on the Fair Park Football Club in all 3 grades today and hope the visiting side enjoy a day/night of great football action. To the Fair Park players and supporters we welcome and thank you for agreeing to our request for a night game. This afternoon we also welcome the parents of our colts to enjoy a relaxed bite to eat before the day kicks off at 3pm. Then later on tonight, our 2008 Premiers & Champions Side will reunite to celebrate their 10 year reunion. As 2008 was the second phase to our back to back campaign, the 2007 members have also been invited to attend so it should be a fantastic day for our football club. Our current list is enjoying our best run in a number of years, falling a few points short against the second ranked side, Whitehorse Pioneers in our last outing. Unfortunately having led all day we were over run in the dying seconds, halting our winning streak to 3 games. It has however been a fruitful month for the club as we continue to gather momentum in the second half of the season. Once again we extend our welcome to the Fair Park FC and to all our invited guests we trust you will have a great day and night at Silvan. Go Cats!!

FAIRPARK: Last game saw the Seniors take on Nunawading at home. The Reserves came away with a great win and after a slow start the Seniors also came away with a strong win. The Under 19s fought hard all day in trying conditions and played really well to only lose by a few goals, a much closer game than the week before against the same opponents. The omens were positive with the Under 19’s recording a win at Fair Park in what could best be described as challenging conditions. A 62-30 victory was highlighted by 4 goals by the recently returned Nick Pearson. He was joined in the best players by Matt Ross Stubbs, Jake Elliott, Michael Karaoglanis, Jared Walls and Jordan Michael. The Reserves faced a Forest Hill outfit who had inflicted their only defeat of the season in Round 4. This would again prove to be a tight encounter with the teams locked at 27 points at the main break. A 3 goal third quarter to the Rams would prove decisive with the boys hanging on for a 5 point win. Best players were the Prelorenzo boys, Ryan Lepore, Will O’Brien and Anthony Perri. The main event saw the Rams field a side featuring 8 changes from the previous week and debutants in Lachie Gould and Aiden Stephens. The switched on Rams set out to stamp their authority early and by half time held a 41 point advantage over the Zebra’s. In what was arguably their best 4 quarter performance of the year they eventually ran out winners 108-45. A vital 4 points for the Rams and momentum regained as they enter the split round. Upcoming Events Charity Auction Night Saturday July 21st 7pm start at the clubrooms.
