INSIDE THE EFL Respect While I work in Aussie Rules and played it for a large part of my life, I love all sports and like many of you no doubt, have been absorbed by the FIFA World Cup that is currently underway. Having spent the year traveling in 1998 and being in a couple of countries while their teams played in Phil Murton the World Cup in France, I saw EFL Chief Executive Officer first hand the passion and excitement this competition brings to nations where soccer is their main sport. As our own Socceroos have forged their own path on the world stage, I’ve enjoyed the ride. Aloisi’s penalty, Tim Cahill’s regular heroics, Kewell, Viduka, no matter the sport you love you can appreciate talent, hard work and sacrifice on the world stage. Despite Ronaldo’s hat-trick free kick, England’s winning form and (as a massive Spurs fan) Harry Kane’s Golden Boot run, it’s some things that have happened on the pitch that have caught my attention at this World Cup. And I hope it’s a legacy that catches on across sport. Japan vs Belgium was one of the great games of this World Cup. Seeing them regularly as part of the Socceroos’ Asian adventures, we all know Japan are a quality team with a terrific attitude. 2-0 up late in World Cup knockout game against one of the tournament favourites, with the likes of Hazard, Lukaku, Fellaini, Du Bruyn and Dembele against them, an unlikely victory was in Japan’s grasp. But three late goals including one in the last play of the game stole victory from them in the cruellest of circumstances only sport can provide. How did the Japanese, players officials and spectators, react in this moment of extreme disappointment? In images that went around the world, the players and staff left the change rooms clean and spotless, even leaving a note, written in Russian, saying thank you. In the stands the spectators cleaned up their area. The Japanese are known as a respectful nation, but this made headlines. Why was it such a surprise? Isn’t it the kind of behaviour we all should show? They haven’t been the only ones. Many spectators from competing Asian and African countries have been seen cleaning up their areas after the game, win, lose or draw.

We’ve seen similar before. The most successful sporting team in the world, the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, are famous for their policy of “sweeping the sheds”. In a remarkably honest self-assessment, former star captain Ritchie McCaw recognised that arrogance had played a part in their downfall at the 2007 World Cup and that he and the coaching staff had failed in their leadership. It gained prominence with a book called Legacy, written by James Kerr, who lived with the All Blacks trying to analyse what their culture was about. The concept’s pretty simple. It’s largely about taking responsibility for your own actions and not having any sense of entitlement. As a result, the All Blacks players took control of cleaning the rooms after games, amongst other cultural and behavioural changes. We saw it locally with Tigers skipper Trent Cotchin, backpack on his back, cleaning up rubbish as he was almost the last to leave following a big Friday night final last year. I know from my time in local footy at times it was always “someone else’s problem”. Especially in the disappointment of a loss. Looking back at times I was probably as much at fault as anyone. Banging muddy boots in the changerooms expecting someone else to clean it up. Leaving tape in the showers. I know during our finals series when we manage the venue with the host clubs, rooms are often left in an average state, usually the losers’ rooms. After a long day hosting, cleaning up someone else’s mess is the last thing people want to, nor should have to do. I spoke with a club volunteer recently who told me how the club captain went to the guy who usually cleans the social rooms and told him not to worry, he’ll get a group of players to do it. He said the reaction of the gentleman was priceless, not only for the chop out on that night but it showed that the clubs on-field leader recognised the value of what he does every week. Small things and actions make a big difference. Maybe “Sweeping the Sheds” could catch on in the EFL. What a terrific message it would send by playing groups to the volunteers of all clubs of how they are valued and the respect for which they are held. If you see it, take a photo and post on social media with the hashtag #eflsweepthesheds, and we’ll like, share and retweet. See you at the footy.

THE FIVE By: Matt Fotia Twitter: @fotiamatt

A

freezing cold weekend, which threatened rain, gave us extreme wind chill and occasionally tempted us with sunshine. It also gave us plenty of complications and realisations as we turn the last corner and head into the final straight of 2018. Here’s five things we learnt from last weekend… Redbacks rise to brush off the Jets The newly-refurbished Jubilee Park hosted the second instalment of the Parker Cup for 2018 as the injury-ravaged Jets came to play. Heathmont coach Joel Cordwell caught everyone by surprise when he swung Ben Abbruzzese down back to lock onto Trent Farmer. The move came out as a masterstroke as Abbruzzese matched Farmer’s strength and explosiveness. Farmer was forced to move higher up the ground to influence the contest in what must be considered a massive win for the Jets, especially as they headed into the main break with a lead. The Redbacks identified the stoppages and contested possessions as the key areas where they needed to improve and improve they did. Led by Mitch Farmer their on-ball brigade as they almost assaulted the Jets midfield, nullifying Brent English’s impact around the stoppages and played the second half entirely on their terms. The most pleasing aspect for Ringwood fans was the spread of goal-kicking options with the absence of a Farmer bag. Zach Callinan (pictured) kicked three in a great small forward performance, Mitchell Jacobs was impressive in the second half with two goals, as five others hit the scoresheet. For Heathmont, there are positives. The aforementioned performance of Abbruzzese, Fin Brown and Leigh Odermatt are combining well up forward and they’re testing their depth which should come in handy come finals time – the Jets will still be a force come September.

Heave-ho After the first three rounds of the season it was pretty clear that the Templestowe Dockers had decided to rebuild. Many (including myself) expected them to start next season in the new Division 3, as part of the bottom six this season. But after completing yet another shutout, this time against the Waverley Blues, the Dockers look set to finish in the top six and could still consider themselves a massive finals aspirant. The Blues could only manage one goal after quarter time as Daniel Cripps snagged four and David Di Stefano kicked three for Tempy, with Mark Ferraro finished best afield. The Dockers’ defensive structure is something to be admired as they show the benefits of a solid back six in today’s footy. It leaves Templestowe level on points with The Basin in fifth and with the Bears facing Boronia next week it could mean the Round 14 clash between Templestowe and the Bears will have an extra edge. It’s a massive credit to Craig De Corsey and the Templestowe Football Club who have managed to combine transition and success in 2018.

Roos on the hop Despite showing plenty of evidence that they are going in the right direction and have plenty of upside, it seems that East Ringwood will not be a part of the Premier Division in 2019 after its 13-point loss to Montrose on Saturday. Brett Johnson showed his worth kicking three goals and finishing best on ground, whilst big Billy Schilling stood up for his side when it mattered again, snagging six majors in a game which saw just 18 goals. It’s made even more impressive by the fact Schilling had just 12 goals in seven games prior to this weekend.

8

The Eastern Footballer

After a free flowing first quarter which saw 11 goals, both sides clearly felt the enormity of the result with just eight behinds kicked in the second. East heading into the final change four points ahead, but failed to convert its chances kicking four behinds to three goals in the last term. One thing keeping the Roos in the hunt for the Premier Division in 2019 is their superior percentage of 75% compared to Montrose’s 66%. What isn’t in their favour is their run home. The Roos still have Knox in three weeks’ time which should give them their third win for the year, but will have to knock off one of; Blackburn (A), Balwyn (H), South Croydon (H), North Ringwood (A) or Rowville (H) to be a chance of staying up. Should Montrose fail to get a victory for the rest of the season, that Round 17 clash with local rivals North Ringwood could be East Ringwood’s last chance saloon.

Sharks sinking fast It’s a known fact that if Sharks stop swimming they die. I don’t know the ins and outs of why that occurs, but I know that’s a fact. It seems that our friends out at Domeney Reserve have stopped swimming, as Park Orchards sunk to its third successive loss, this time at the hands of Croydon, a side playing with no pressure. Croydon hit the front with about 10 minutes to go in the last, before a Connor Hickey set shot wobbled through at the 23 minute mark to bring the Sharks level. It’s at this stage of the game where Jarrod Bayliss would’ve expected his big stars to stand up and will his side over the line, to steady their season and go level with Bayswater. However with 28 minutes gone on the clock, Harry Dempster wobbled a left foot bomb from just inside the arc which whacked into the woodwork. 30 seconds later, with the ball in the middle of the ground, the siren sounded, with two completely different emotions sweeping the two sides. Croydon, now 5-7, has a blank canvas for the rest of the season. The Blues can try new things, new players and begin planning for next season. The Sharks, now 6-6, missed a great chance to go level with Bayswater in fourth, are now just percentage ahead of Wantirna South and have three of the top four to play, with Bayswater in Round 16 the big one. However after a look at both sides’ fixture list, the Sharks may be out of the running by that time of year. The Sharks have just come up to the division, but would’ve expected more after their start to the year. A big month ahead for the young Park Orchards troops.

Three into one The victories of East Burwood, Fairpark and the Whitehorse Pioneers have set the top three of the Division 4 ladder for season 2018. It’s also opened up a three-horse race for the fourth spot as Fairpark, for all its faults, finds itself just one game behind Forest Hill, level with Kilsyth. The Lions have two very winnable games (Silvan and Coldstream) to come in their run home, face Glen Waverley in Round 14, before their bunnies Whitehorse Pioneers in Round 15 and go up against Forest Hill at home in Round 16. Kilsyth has the second-placed Pioneers and third-placed East Burwood in the next fortnight, before facing Coldstream, Surrey Park and Forest Hill in the last three rounds, whilst the Zebras have Coldstream, Whitehorse, Silvan before a massive final two weeks against Fairpark and Kilsyth. What does all this tell us? Whichever side finishes in the top four will have definitely deserved it. Neither of those three sides have an easy run home and it could all come down to the last weekend. It might not always get the attention it deserves, but the Division 4 finals race is something to keep everyone interested with just five games to go. LEADER YOUNG GUN By: Toby Prime (Leader Newspapers)

OBLE Park was looking for players to step up.

and he is now playing some midfield time,” Noble Park captain Kyle Martin said.

A player exodus of decorated players and great clubmen from Moodemere St left the Bulls battered and bruised over the summer.

“His pace and his smarts around goal is second to none and he’s a really, really good young talent.”

But up rise the young talent, including Luke Nelson. The young forward arrived at Noble Park at the start of the 2017 campaign and has quickly made a spot his own. The 20-year-old is yet to miss a game at the Bulls, kicking 25 goals from 30 games to be a shining light in his side’s four-win season. Nelson kicked two goals on Saturday against Norwood and was again listed in Noble Park’s best players to earn the Round 12 nomination for the Eastern Football League Division 1 and 2 Young Gun Award. “It’s been huge, backing up from his first year at the club last year, when we thought he had a really good year, he’s just come along again

www.efl.org.au

Martin said Nelson had become a more consistent performer. “He’s definitely very important to how we play and the system that we have at the moment,” he said. “The role he has been able to play for us this year has been huge and he has really filled that without any problems at all.” Nelson is the second Noble Park player to be nominated for the award after Bailey Lambert was the Round 5 nominee. Nelson is joined by Division 3 and 4 nominee Mark Ferraro from Templestowe. Ferraro was listed as the Dockers’ best player in the Round 13 win over Waverley Blues, stepping up to senior football in 2018 after playing in the under-19s last year.

ANDERSON’S RISE By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

W

hat a past 10 months it’s been for South Croydon’s Frank Anderson.

At just 20 years of age, Anderson captained the Vic Metro representative side in the AFL Victoria Community Cup last Sunday, when they took on Vic Country at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium. An excited Anderson spoke in the lead-up to last week’s clash. “I found out on (the) Monday night at the second-last training session,” Anderson said. “(Vic Metro coach) Brian Royal came up to me and said congratulations – I had a big smile on my face, gave him a big hug and shook his hand.

“It’s pure happiness really (and) very humbled to tell you the truth, but excited as well.” Despite the result, with Vic Country running out 25-point winners, 12.17 (89) to 9.10 (64), the honour of leading his charges added to a gleaming past year for the Bulldog. Anderson was named the winner of the Leader Young Gun Award for Division 1 and 2 at last season’s Chandler Medal in a year where he played an integral role in delivering South Croydon its first top-tier flag in its history. In May, he represented the EFL in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships as Eastern claimed the coveted number-one ranking in the state. It’s a surreal feeling for one of the most prolific young stars in Division 1. “How good is footy at the moment?,” Anderson said. “Straight after the (Division 1) grand final I was in Europe for three and a half months with my best mate and my girlfriend and then came home, started playing footy again and started up my own business with my girlfriend. “Everything’s awesome at the moment, definitely floating on water – it’s really cool.” The Vic Metro team had Anderson listed alongside familiar names Jayden Kroussoratis (Norwood), Jackson McDonald (Rowville), Joseph Fisher and Liam Buxton (Vermont) – reuniting after representing the EFL together in May. Team camaraderie for Vic Metro was eerily similar to this year’s EFL representative side. “I think that’s what did us justice in the interleague game as well when we played Geelong; we were there to play with each other,” Anderson said. Originally published as Anderson named Vic Metro captain on EFL.org.au.

SOUTH CROYDON: An excellent day for the club on the field last Saturday, with all 4 football teams winning! This started at Silvan with the Sth Croydon/Whitehorse U19s recording a comfortable win in very cold conditions. Well done lads – we know this year hasn’t been easy for you and we commend your efforts (and those of your family and friends) in getting back to support the senior’s after your games. At the Kennel, the weather was marginally better for the early women’s game, and the ladies came up trumps against Boronia – recording their 5th win for the season. The main fixture was against Balwyn, and like most clubs we have struggled against the Tigers in years past. The development squad started into the breeze, and found themselves a goal behind at the first break. A rev by the coach saw the boys click into gear and after this the opposition was kept to 2 points for the rest of the game, while we kicked another 14 goals for a comfortable win. We always expected a tough encounter in the seniors, particularly after Balwyn’s big win the prior week. The two teams were not separated by more than 2 goals for the first three quarters, but one sensed that we had control of the game for the most part during that time. Early in the last term, the Tigers surged, and with our rotations limited to three for two full terms, some started to question whether we could hold on. To the team’s credit, and in a sign of our improvement, we were able to repel this surge and pile on the final 5 goals of the game to run out 35 point winners. On Sunday, many of us watched proudly as Frank Anderson led out the Vic Metro team as captain against Vic Country. A great opportunity and privilege for a terrific young man! VERMONT: If anyone told you ten years ago (make that five years ago) that one day women will play footy at 3pm on Saturday and they will be cheered on by the senior men who had played in an earlier game, you would think they were mad. But this happened Saturday whilst inside the social Club, 135 VFC Women were having a mighty time with a Long Lunch that included a Band playing and the ladies having a very good time. It was fantastic and we thank the women that invigorated a bleak winter day. The Senior game was never in doubt, it was more about how we did it. The Coach was happy and we move on to bigger challenges today. The Knox footy Club are going through a very hard patch and doing it with great dignity despite them failing to win a game. Last year at this time, they were on top of 2nd Div. undefeated. The better senior players were Robbie McComb, Jake Best, Brett Eddy, Cam Howat, Luke McComb, Sam Wadley & Cam Purdy. The Reserves trained at 9.30am. The Under 19’s had a much tougher task defeating Blackburn this time which was very much what the team needed. The better Players were Josiah Duncan, Zac Theissen, Taine Barlow, Bayley Werle, Daniel Houiex and Kyle Barlow. The Women’s game was very well supported, particularly by the Senior players who had a very social afternoon. SOCIAL:- The Ladies Lunch was a wonderful success again thanks to our organiser Michelle Hemmings. Supporters please see Brian Power and support our Major Raffle, if want some tickets or could sell some, ring him on 0425759692.

DIVISION 1 BLACKBURN: After a season defining victory over the ladder leaders Vermont, The Eastern Footballer was sobering reading last week as none of the 7 tipsters selected the Burners to follow up and defeat Doncaster at Shark Park. Despite this, as well as 3 forced changes and challenging conditions the boys slammed on 6 goals to 1 in the last half to record a great win. The result meant a return to the Top 5 and an 8/4 record in what is becoming a very competitive season in division One. We welcomed back Ben Daniher, who turned in a BOG display kicking 2 goals and Jake Hammond continued his good form with another 5 goals. It was pleasing to continue our solid recent form and sets up a great game today versus East Ringwood who will be keen to record a victory. Our Reserves recorded a solid 65pt win which included 10 separate goal kickers on the day. Whilst our Netballers had the BYE, our Women’s Team recorded another impressive win against Upwey Tecoma to remain in equal 1st spot in Division 2. Major Raffle: Tickets ($10.00) are now available for our major fundraiser with 1st Prize being a $3,000 Holiday package in Kuta Beach BALI. Only 2,500 tickets to be sold so get yours now from Mike McCoy on 0419 879 808 or Darren Adey on 0455 134 007 #WeAreBlackburn #OneClub

EAST RINGWOOD: The women’s team extended their winning streak to 7 games against Yarra Junction. Easily the worst conditions all season – freezing cold, low light and raining for almost the entire game. We got off to a strong start with a 2 goal lead at the end of the first quarter. For the next 2 quarters Yarra Junction played in front and were rewarded for their efforts with the game in the balance at the last break. Peter Baker appealed to the Team to play in front in the last quarter and they responded to hold off Yarra Junction and win 4.10.34 to 4.6.28. Better players for the Roos were Kelly Adams playing in front all day, Bevo and Jenni Hicks. The Development Squad went into the game confident that a good start would leave them with a great chance of competing for the rest of the day. This did not happen unfortunately and a bad first quarter left them down by 24. They fought to stay within range the whole day but a bad start left it a difficult task and the game ended 3.6.24 to 10.10.70. Better players were Luke Fairy, Nathan Percy, Billy Doyle and Mitch Kimmins. Our Firsts Team came out of the blocks strongly playing beautiful footy to be up by 3 goals after 10 minutes. A nice highlight was when first gamer Tate Langenberg delighted the crowd with a 180 spin to elude his opponent in front of the grand stand. By the end of the quarter the game tightened up and became a goal for goal arm wrestle. It was an exciting but ultimately disappointing end to the game. At the 4 minute mark of the final quarter we were down by a point, 7 points down at the 13 minute mark, 12 points at the 24 minute mark and 13 points at the final siren. Final scores 8.14.62 to 11.9.75. Better players for the Roos were Leigh Osbourne and Liam Kinsella. Diary Dates Saturday, July 14: Gala Ball. Contact Bec (0413613220) or book online via the website. Saturday, August 11: Huge Ladies’ Luncheon as we host the Bulldogs. Details as above with Bec. Don’t forget to secure your tickets for the $5000 Gold Bullion Raffle which will be drawn on August 25. ROWVILLE: The morning was cloudy and wet as all 3 of our sides made their way over to Quambee Reserve to face North Ringwood and we came to back to Seebeck with 3 from 3. Our U19s got us off to the start we were looking for! Although our bench numbers went down as the game went on our boys fought it out, we had multiple goal scorers and we came home with a 45 point win. Our Development side produced another strong performance, their constant defensive pressure lead them to get over the line by 47 points and like the U19s we were able to have a bunch of goal scorers throughout the game. The Senior game was off to a pretty equal start but after the big break we were able to kick away from North Ringwood. Which gave us a handy lead come 3QT and we were able to maintain that and finish the game with a 40 point win. This week we are travelling again, all 3 sides will make their way to Balwyn Park, each side will be looking to cement their spots on the ladder. Good luck to all teams competing today. NORTH RINGWOOD: Under 19’s – Started the game is very strange circumstances first the game was on then it was off and finally after the players rallied the game was back on again. Another cruel week of injuries and unavailability has caused low numbers. With the help of the under 17’s we managed to run out with 17 for a 16 on 16 game. The opposition were too good but as our players know we are in for the long term not the short term scoreboard. Reserves – The twos also faced a higher opposition and while the game was close for most of the game the older side in Rowville just were too strong for the Seconds. In a similar score line as the seniors we went down by 47 points Seniors – On a freezing cold winters day Rowville travelled to Quambee for the round 12 clash. The first quarter saw an even contest with both sides having failed in an opportunity to take a small lead at the first break. The second quarter again saw both sides battle a very even quarter, a late goal just before half time saw the Rowville take a 11 point lead at the main break. The third quarter saw the North Ringwood boys rally and we got within 8pts at the 20 min mark but some quick ball movement and some quick goals saw the lead move out to 26 pts at the last change. While the boys tried hard to cut the lead it was to no avail Rowville continued to apply the pressure and ended up winning by 40pts. Congratulations to Ash Goldsmith and Jake Ireland on their first senior game for the club they have become the 5th and 6th player to play their first senior game. Go Saints

DIVISION 1 KNOX: We’re back at The Fort today still in search of our first senior win of the year as we host Norwood.

KNOX

Last week it was a disappointing day for our boys out at Vermont, who came up against a very impressive outfit and one which was ultimately a class above us. Congratulations to former junior Josh Saliba, who was a late call up into the seniors, making his debut for the club. Well done Josh! It was great to have the women’s team play again at the same venue of the guys. The girls unfortunately went down to Vermont in just their 3rd loss of the year. Hopefully you can bounce back this week! It was good to have the men’s and women’s teams along with sponsors and supporters back at the Knox Club after the game sticking thick together through some tougher times. During the week the club hosted the EFL little legends clinic which was presented by Channel Nine.We thank everyone who volunteered their time, especially mid week, to help run the event. Upcoming functions - Next Friday night 20th July, we have the Night of the Falcon at the Knox Club. Tickets are $65pp which includes a 2 course meal and drinks at bar and member prices. The suburban footballer will be the entertainment of the night who feature across Sportsbet videos amongst their social media pages. As there is no game on for our boys next Saturday, we encourage everyone to come down for what is sure to be a great night. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, please see Pilch or Harry Exton today.

NORWOOD: Norwood completed a nice double over rivals Noble Park with a comfortable 28 point win at Mullum reserve on the weekend. Star full-forward Leigh Williams was at it again with 7 goals, he now leads the competition goalkicking by 3 goals despite being unavailable for the 1st game of the year. Running half-back Michael Pearson put in a great game, and it was great to see club favourite and current B&F Matt Aver play his best game for the year after struggling early on, his pre-season wrecked by a broken leg from the last game last year. Jordan Gysberts and Rej Jordon continued their very reliable years and Alex Calder added some nice polish with 3 goals from half-forward. Box Hill aligned Tom Maloney and Stuey Horner continue to add polish and class to our team every game they play. We take on relegation bound Knox next week but must show no mercy if we are to set alight our finals chances. The Dev squad continued good recent form with a hard fought win and the Colts curiously played out their 2nd draw of the year against Noble Park, Riley Costantino the hero with a goal after the game to secure the draw. ALMOST LITTLE LEGENDS CLINIC By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

K

nox Gardens Reserve hosted our Almost Little Legends Footy Clinic for our local junior footballers in the east this week.

The morning started at 9am where all the clubs were to gather around as Shane Crawford and his crew provided some light entertainment before commencing the clinic. With the siren sounding that meant the clinic was under way, the kids made their way around the different stations to practice their skills. There was handballing, kicking, tackling, goal scoring, taking speccies and of course some tag. Whilst the kids went around the stations for around two hours, parents and families watched on from the sidelines and were able to enjoy some food and relaxation. We were lucky enough to work with Channel Nine and the AFL Footy Show with Shane Crawford, Billy Brownless, Chris Judd and Matthew Lloyd to move around with the kids. We were also lucky enough to have four of the Hawthorn VFLW players in attendance as well – Sarah Perkins, Bronte Bilston, Emily Mcilvena and Penny Brown. The Nine News team also featured prominently, with Peter Hitchener, Livinia Nixon, Nathan Currie and Justine Conway. And of course, Lauren Phillips from Kids WB came down as well to work with Crawford.

When the final siren went all the clubs lined back up across the ground and then were able to all get some group photos with all the Channel Nine superstars. Each of the little legends went home with a giftbag full of goodies and a fun morning full of footy!

DIVISION 2 UPPER FTG: Another good win last week against Mooroolbark will see the senior side full of confidence to take on Doncaster East at Kings Park today. Well done to Matt Lee who got a late call up to make his debut with North Melbourne in the VFL last week playing against Casey who included our own Tim Smith and with Daniel Neilson also playing for North the game featured three former Upper Gully juniors. The seniors certainly didn’t miss him with Tom Meagher named best alongside Tim Riseley and Bryce Hards. The reserves were left depleted struggling for players last week with Brodie Leathem and Brenton Toole pulling on the boots as well as Saidi Kipyego alongside a couple of the U19’s backing up from the earlier game including Jarryd Bowler who kicked the sides only goal and Jack Rule who were playing their first reserves games. Dozer in his first game for a couple of years was in the best alongside Mark Fenelon and Ben Haddock. The U19’s went down narrowly to Moorolbark with Liam Dove kicking 2 goals and being named in the best alongside Liam McKernan. Well done to U17’s players Daniel Kreidl and Kade Caulfield-Knight who played their first U19’s games for the club. The Women’s team were on the top oval at Kings Park last week and had a comfortable win against Chirnside Park with Eliza Clark the best kicking 6 goals. The Netball girls had a week off last week and resumed last night while the Vets are in action tomorrow at home against South Croydon. Upcoming functions include the Ladies Night on the 28th July, Trivia Night on the 4th August and the Masquerade Ball on the 18th August. With the unfortunate cancellation of the Gala Dinner the club has scheduled a luncheon on the 11th August to celebrate its 70th anniversary if you have any memorabilia, photos etc. you would like to make available, please contact uftg-70thcelebrations@hotmail.com. The King Club is again available for support this season with Peter Hards in charge or contact Andy Lee to get your social membership. Thanks to all our sponsors who are back on board this year, please use them and mention you are from the club. Good Luck Today Upper……Go the Red and Blue

DIVISION 2

BAYSWATER: The men’s sides played away at East Doncaster with the U 19’s hoping for a win, the Reserves looking to get into finals contention and the senior’s looking to consolidate their position in the top four.

Reserves looking to get back into the finals race, given instructions prior to the game of the importance of the game and the role It would play going forward, clearly listened with a 5 goals to one first quarter. Running out winners by 6 goals has put them back in the finals race. Mitch and Trav were great up forward with 4 a piece kicking 8 of the 12 goal total. Best players : Sheldon Smith, Wallace, Vandy, J Pritchard, Mitch and Gordo of the Jason variety.

The importance of the senior game was consolidating a position in finals contention. We came up against one of the top two contenders keeping it close in the first quarter but not utilising the wind. In the 2nd quarter Donny East outscored us with the advantage of the wind. Leacey had a bad ankle injury and ever brave Searley was out with a suspected rib/kidney injury and the Russian unable to go on with game we were quite few men down but battled on making a resurgence in the last ½ of the game coming up to being 2 kicks away from a win. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold on finishing the game 3 goals down. Bests; Jack was great with 4 goals, Malcs, Cotte, B Galvin, J Galvin, Rooey and Jess Moore.

Coming up against an in form Croydon who had a surprise win against Park Orchards in the senior all 3 teams will need to bring out their best.

The Ladies team travelled to Heathmont which was a repeat of the week before and thankfully the team kicked off like they left off the week prior taking a 52 point win. Wilson with 4 goals and Austin with 2 in what again was a great team effort . The ladies will travel to the Basin this week kicking off after their senior game (twilight game). Should be a great contest with Bayswater in 5th and the Basin in 6th position, keep up the great work ladies

A great night was had last Saturday at the trivia night, thanks for all who came along.

Go Baysie.

The improvement from the u 19’s continues, football can be a very tough game, some say it is a game of inches or 1 percenters. All of the above came to fruition on the weekend with an after the siren kick needing to win the game for the 19’s, controversially the central umpire over ruled the goal umpire deeming it a point not a goal for Bayswater, seeing us lose the game by 4 points. What was heartbreaking in defeat will hopefully become character building. Best players; Capaldo, Raaymakers, Hunt, Utan, Treeby and King.

CROYDON: This week we travel to Bayswater. Last week the seniors did us proud. Playing 5th place Park Orchards the boys came home strongly with the wind and got up to win by one point in the dying seconds of the game. Croydon won 9-10 to 9-9. The seconds are still suffering from a long injury list and players overseas but still pushed second place Park Orchards all day to go down by only 12 points 4-4 to 5-10. Lincoln Pratt kicked three of the four goals. The Colts played the undefeated Park Orchards side and drew the game 10-3 to 9-9 but should have won having given up a 27 point lead at the last change. The club rooms will not be open after the game as The Mid Year Ball will be held tonight at Briggins Clothiers in Nunawading from 7-00pm to midnight. The cost is $100 a person with food and beverages included. The club rooms will be open for dinner next Thursday night. This is your last opportunity to say goodbye to the rooms before the wreckers move in. Thanks to everyone who came to the Club last Sunday and helped move the walls of trophies, photos and memorabilia. These have been placed in storage until next May when we return. The Reverse Raffle draw will be held on 4 August after the Mulgrave home game at a venue TBA. If anyone wants to buy a ticket in the draw please see a committee member. We will be having a Past Players afternoon on 18 August during our last home game against Wantirna South. Presentation Night will be held on 21 September at the Dorset Garden’s Hotel. Details will be available shortly. Don’t forget Croydon Football Club merchandise is now available. Please see Robyn Nyberg for scarves, rugby tops, puffer jackets, polo shirts, beanies, stubby holders, shorts, track pants, coffee cups and very warm puffer vests. GO BLUES!!!!!

DIVISION 2 WANTIRNA SOUTH: What a difference a week makes in football. Prior to last week’s game, a finals position for our reserves and senior sides wasn’t looking flash. However, after two convincing wins, both sides are back in the hunt. Today’s game against Mitcham is a must win game, like all games, but there is more at stake today. Our under 19’s have put in all year and have played patches of great football, but need to work on consistency across 4 quarters. This happened again last week against Mulgrave. We were 11 points down at three quarter time and in with a chance, however, Mully kicked away in the last quarter and ended up 29 point winners. Best players were Beaton, Noy, Sturtridge, Chen and Cowman. The reserves were keen for a win and came out firing with a 6 goal to nil first quarter. We maintained pressure against Mulgrave for 4 quarters and ended up 75 point winners. Best players were B Cromb, Gleeson, Cahill, Raab, Grima and A Yusuf. The seniors were a bit slow out of the blocks and at quarter time Mulgrave were up by 3 goals and looked the better side. After some stern words from the coach we kicked 3 goals to nil in the second quarter and were back in the game. Our second half was very good and with some accurate kicking (11.3) we won by 58 points. Best players were N Denes, Birkett, Lee, Brent Walker, Edwards and Colosimo. Thanks to all that attended the 10 year reunion of our 2008 premiership team. Heard it was a great night.

MITCHAM: Another wet and cold Saturday greeted us at Lilydale last week. While there was only one W in the win column, for the reserves, our under 19s and seniors were far from disgraced by the top of the table Falcons and with no netball last week, our girls maintain their top 3 position on the ladder. Under 19s probably got the worst of the weather and with 3 of their best out, it certainty didn’t dampen their enthusiasm for the contest going down by 26 points. Hallo with 2 was also named BOG along with Laughlin, Antoniou, Hammond, Irving and Stylos all named in the best. Reserves led from start to finish and could have had the game done and dusted at 3/4 time but for poor kicking. Two quick goals by the Dales at the beginning of the last, meant game on but our boys steadied, winning 3 - 11 to 3- 4. All single goal kickers with De Luca, Finch, Arguello, Brock, McArdle, and Elms all named in the best. Seniors showed plenty early leading by 24 points at the long break. Lucas had a purple patch early, booting 3 majors as we gave as good as we got. Once again we allowed the opposition back into the game during the 3rd term as we coughed up our lead. Last quarter Dales showed why they’re top of the table, but to our boy’s credit they never threw in the towel. Lucas with 3 and Winteron 2 were our only multiple goal kickers. The Skipper Jackson Glossop was named best along with Cheery, Uren, McCartney, Lucas and Winterton. THANK YOU also to the Mitcham Faithful who turned out in numbers last week in poor conditions to support the club, the players really appreciate the support BIG Month for the club coming up with the 130th dinner tonight should be a great night with a great band. There are only 20 tickets left for the sponsor’s lunch on Saturday 28th July with Dane Swan. You don’t have to be a sponsor to attend; contact Macca for tickets. Unfortunately The MND Ladies Lunch on Saturday August 4th with Neale Daniher is SOLD OUT. BIG THANK YOU to a couple of club sponsors who have put their hand up to help out. Firstly Hine Hire in Rowville who are supplying a fully lined and heated marquee on the netball court, increasing the capacity to 250. Secondly, Southern Cross Protection are making sure that all goes well over the weekend, supplying on site security for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Great clubs are made of great people and even better community partners, so if you get a chance please spread the word about these two great companies who are helping make this one of the biggest events ever held at a Mitcham Home game. Hoping everybody has a great day at the footy and you keep up to date with all the Tigers news via our official facebook page @mitchamfootballclub and Official Website www.mitchamfc.com #strongandbold

DIVISION 2 PARK ORCHARDS: This week we welcome Lilydale to Domeney Reserve for the very first time. The Falcons are having a great 2018, so we will have to be at the top of our game to challenge the ladder leaders.

PARK ORCHARDS Senior Coach: Jarrod Bayliss Res Coach: Matt Flemming Ground: Domeney Reserve, Knees Road Park Orchards (Melways 35 E9) Colours: Black with red and white bands, white shark, black shorts.

Last week reminded us what a tough, brutal sport Aussie Rules can be. In the senior game, an ambulance had to be called to take young Sam Heron to hospital after his leg was badly broken. Sam, the Sharks (and I’m sure the wider EFL community) wish you a speedy recovery. The day at Croydon epitomised what local footy was all about. The three games were played in great spirit and all hotly contested. The combined margin of those three games was only 13 points! In freezing conditions, with a howling southerly, our U19 A’s stormed home with the wind and kicked five goals in the last quarter to force a draw after the Croydon boys led all day. The Ressies welcomed back some regular players and toughed out the game for a two goal win after it looked as though they might have been over run in the last quarter. The main game was a tussle all day. Although we lost by only 1 point, we felt Croydon well and truly deserved to win. We played only patches of the footy we know we can play; it wasn’t good enough. Croydon slipped away to a 21 point lead mid way through the 3rd quarter when we had the wind advantage. It was pleasing to fight back, but we just fell short. Better players were Wright, Hickey, Philp and Walkley. Our Under 19 B’s battled hard, but were no match on the day against the top side, Surrey Park. Just a reminder about the Domenerian Auction night in 5 week’s time; put the night of 18th August in your calendars! Check out our website for other upcoming events and all our sponsor’s details: www.parkorchardsfc.com.au #gosharks!

EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) R11 vs OAKLEIGH CHARGERS OAKLEIGH CHARGERS - 13.14.92 EASTERN RANGES - 5.3.33 Amongst wild winds at Warrawee Park on Saturday, Eastern suffered their third consecutive loss, a 59-point defeat to the Oakleigh Chargers. Oakleigh kicked with the wind in the opening quarter and quickly set about building a match-winning lead, by quarter time the scoreboard read 40 to 0. The wind proved to be as much of an obstacle to overcome as the opposition, with Eastern unable to score a single point at the western end of the ground against the wind. The second and fourth quarters saw Eastern able to win the term by five and twelve

The Ranges’ best players on the day were Lachlan Stapleton, Jack Kritopoulos, Ben Cardamone, Cooper Leon, Tevita Tauali’i, and Xavier Fry. The goalkickers were: T Edwards A Kalcovski J Jaworski K Quirk B White With Round 11 being a split round, the boys have this weekend off before travelling to Shepparton to face the third-placed Murray Bushrangers. FOREST HILL: Well the weather last week wasn’t great, however the club still had a fantastic turn out for our Sponsors’ Day with the best crowd we have seen at Forest Hill Reserve for a number of years. A huge thank you to all the footballers, netballers and volunteers that ensured our big day went off without a hitch and kept the big crowd fed and watered for the day and well into the night. In the reserves it was 1 vs 2 as we went up against an East Burwood side which has taken all before it this year. The wind was certainly a contributing factor as it heavily favoured scoring at the Pool end and we made good use of it in the second quarter as we went to the main break with scores level. Our 3rd quarter yielded only a single point into the stiff wind and it looked like the Rams had a big enough lead to ensure they could hold on from there. We came back hard in the last quarter and finally fell 5 points short. A great team effort and proof that we can match it with the competitions yardstick, no doubt when we have a large number of players return from injury will strengthen our reserves team considerably. We are now sitting 3rd on the ladder just behind Surrey Park on percentage. The senior game was 3rd vs 4th on the ladder. Despite first use of the strong wind the Zebras didn’t capitalise on the wind advantage and trailed at quarter time. By half-time the Rams had kicked away to a significant lead. The 3rd quarter was a scrap and at three quarter time it was going to be an enormous effort to come from a significant deficit into such a strong wind in the last quarter. The Zebras fought the game out in the last quarter however it wasn’t enough and the Rams took home the 4 premiership points. Congratulations to Ryan Fisher who played his 100th game for the Zebras and Senior Coach Martin Stillman who was working the magnets in his 50th senior game for us. Whilst the result on the weekend was disappointing, we know that performance was nowhere near our best football and the seniors are sitting 4th one game and percentage clear of Kilysth and Fair Park. One thing is for sure in season 2018 Division 4 is certainly a very even competition and there are no easy games. Our Netballers return to the court with the Green team and the Zebras in action on Friday although the White team have a bye so get to enjoy an extra week off. This week we can atone for last week’s losses as we make the long trek out to Coldstream. Whilst Coldstream haven’t won as many games as last season, they are very competitive and always hard to beat on their home ground, it’s a must win game for the senior team and the reserves will also be looking to get back onto the winners list. Let’s get two good wins this week and get that winning feeling back as we build towards the last month of the home and away season. Go Zebs!

KILSYTH: Last weekend saw a productive day at Pinks reserve. The reserves had a commanding win with standout efforts from Paul Malan and Jake Henshall. Nick Leary was putting in a damaging performance before being taken off with a knee injury. Any time you can keep a side without goals for 3/4 it takes a full team effort. This result now puts the reserves in a very strong position for finals if we can shut the door on Whitehorse today. The seniors showed once again they have what it takes to challenge the top sides and refused to give in all day. Their performance was one that earned the respect of the crowd but unfortunately small lapses and lost rotations with injuries saw Glen Waverley leave with the four points but also concerns about what we are capable of we see them again in September. Upstairs the inaugural presidents luncheon was a great success with hall of fame legend guest Terry Wallace. Our sponsors, whom without we would never be able to produce the standard of football we love to watch were also valued guests. Brett and Jenelle Simpson once again produced top quality food enabling us to deliver a top quality function and we look forward to watching this event flourish in coming years. Terry addressed the room and also the senior playing group, reflecting on what has been a rewarding career, displaying just how inspirational a person of his calibre is. Today sees us take on Whitehorse at Springfield Reserve as we charge towards finals so be sure to throw all your support to both teams in the coming weeks.

DIVISION 4 GLEN W HAWKS: The Hawks travelled to Pinks Reserve to take on Kilsyth, our seniors looking to go 11 straight wins and the reserves playing to stay in contention for finals.

GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS Senior Coach: Ryan Flack Res Coach: Drew Withers Ground: Central Reserve, Springvale Road, Glen Waverley. (Melways 71 B5) Ph: 9887 9696 Colours: Blue jumper with gold and white side panels and gold hawk emblem, blue shorts.

The Reserves played first, and with the condiotions holding out and making for a good game, the boys were unable to capitalise, Kilsyth held the momentum throughout the day and the boys went down by 40 points. A positive to take from the day was the consistent strength of the backline, who constantly hold out in the face of pressure and work week in week out. The Seniors then took the field, with M.Potts ppaying his 100th senior game and excitement high the boys came to play, taking the lead early and gaining ascendency with strong play from all the boys. Kilsyth challenges after half time, but pleasingly the boys fought back and took the day, making it 11 wins in a row and keeping top spot on the ladder. Again, after early challenges came, we rallied and closed out well. Ben Sullivan capped of a brave performance carrying a niggle, while Tom Eddy and Andrew Murray drove the ball forward on several occasions. We now look to this weeks home game against Surrey Park. Go Hawks!

FAIRPARK Senior Coach: Sean Stanton Res Coach: Russell Warburton Ground: Fairpark Reserve, Manuka Drive, Ferntree Gully (Melways 64 F11) Colours: Maroon jumper with blue yoke and gold emblem, blue shorts

FAIRPARK: Last game saw the Seniors take on Nunawading at home. The Reserves came away with a great win and after a slow start the Seniors also came away with a strong win. The Under 19s fought hard all day in trying conditions and played really well to only lose by a few goals, a much closer game than the week before against the same opponents. This week as part of the split round we travel to Silvan for our return night game and with the Seniors sitting one game out of the four an important game to win. Upcoming Social Events:

DIVISION 4 EAST BURWOOD: Round 13 was a vital one for the Rams as we approach the pointy end of the season.

EAST BURWOOD

A poor run of results saw the visit to Forest Hill take on extra significance in the week before the split round. Senior Coach: Stuart Wynd Res Coach: Harry Black Ground: East Burwood Reserve, Burwood Hwy, East Burwood (Melways 62 B7) Ph: 9887 8574. Colours: Black jumper, white monogram, black shorts with EFL webbing.

The omens were positive with the Under 19’s recording a win at Fair Park in what could best be described as challenging conditions. A 62-30 victory was highlighted by 4 goals by the recently returned Nick Pearson. He was joined in the best players by Matt Ross Stubbs, Jake Elliott, Michael Karaoglanis, Jared Walls and Jordan Michael. The Reserves faced a Forest Hill outfit who had inflicted their only defeat of the season in Round 4. This would again prove to be a tight encounter with the teams locked at 27 points at the main break. A 3 goal third quarter to the Rams would prove decisive with the boys hanging on for a 5 point win. Best players were the Prelorenzo boys, Ryan Lepore, Will O’Brien and Anthony Perri. The main event saw the Rams field a side featuring 8 changes from the previous week and debutants in Lachie Gould and Aiden Stephens. The switched on Rams set out to stamp their authority early and by half time held a 41 point advantage over the Zebra’s. In what was arguably their best 4 quarter performance of the year they eventually ran out winners 108-45. A vital 4 points for the Rams and momentum regained as they enter the split round. Upcoming Events Charity Auction Night Saturday July 21st 7pm start at the clubrooms.
