FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Firstly, congratulations to all those clubs who have to date savoured premiership glory. After a close home and away season, we’ve enjoyed Graham Halbish a terrific finals series in both EFL Chairman football and netball where some wonderful stories have been written. In netball, Boronia, an inaugural member of the EFL netball competition, capped off a terrific year defeating Fairpark who were aiming for three in a row. While, in the footy, Donvale’s victory in division four capped off a memorable return from recess just three years ago, and Park Orchards created history with its first senior premiership, doing so in style winning all three grades in front of a big crowd at East Burwood. In Division 2, Knox showed the benefits of using relegation as an opportunity and re-energized the club as a whole, leading to the ultimate reward. Today, the most successful club in League history, Vermont, takes on a newcomer to the Division 1 grand final in South Croydon, capping off a great year for our premier football competition. The EFL continues to grow and evolve in a several ways to ensure the long term sustainability of the League and our clubs. This year we had a record 541 football and 70 netball teams entered in EFL competitions. There is no doubt the introduction of the Player Points System and Salary Cap has been a tremendous addition to local footy. As we travel around to clubs each week, the sense of fairness and hope the introduction of these measures has brought is clearly evident, and we remain confident that it will continue to provide volunteers with a platform from which to run their club in a sustainable manner, the main priority of the program. Our investment in game development alongside AFL Victoria, continues to bear fruit. We recorded growth

in Auskick participation for the first time in five years, achieved at the same time as increasing under-8 numbers by 12 teams, to 37 in total. This means we have more children aged 6-10 engaged in Aussie Rules in the east of Melbourne than ever before, underpinning the future of our junior and senior clubs. Some more targeted programs are being put in place for 2018 to continue this growth. Our challenge is to ensure the experience for the players and their families is a positive one and encourage a lifelong involvement in our game. The increase in female participation across the League and our clubs has been of great benefit and is changing the face of local sport in the east. Our netball competition has grown to 70 senior teams, with further growth likely for 2018, and over 70% of clubs now fielding at least one netball team. As has been well documented, female football at all age groups is booming. The Deakin University Eastern Region Girls Competition grew from 37 to 86 teams, while the number of senior women’s teams in the region increased from six to 16 with the first season of the Deakin University Eastern Region Women’s Competition a huge success. Congratulations to inaugural premiers Bayswater against a gallant Waverley Blues team, in what was a great game at Lilydale two weeks ago. Females now make up almost 20% of participation in our clubs. The main challenge that increased participation brings is facilities and as a result, an audit of all facilities in the eastern region is almost complete with the first steps of a Regional Facility Plan underway. We will work closely with AFL Victoria, local councils and all levels of government to help address this need, materially. During the season, the Board approved a change to the structure of the senior football competition, moving to five divisions of 10, 10, eight, eight and eight teams respectively, from season 2019 onwards. After a significant consultation period with clubs, it was pleasing to have overwhelming endorsement from clubs for the change. Again, we believe this change will create an even better environment for all clubs for the future. How the game is played and EFL footy should

look like for spectators, continues to be a point of discussion and debate. As a competition, we pride ourselves on being progressive and innovative and will continue to look at ways to improve the experience for players and spectators alike. The off-season saw significant change in personnel at EFL House with Troy Swainston (footy ops), Dyson Baker (junior footy), Daniel Cencic (media) and Matthew Young (game development) all taking on new roles. While change understandably brings with it some loss in continuity, it also brings with it energy and enthusiasm and the work done by these new staff in a short time shows they’ll be very valuable additions to our organisation. The League would particularly like to thank all our loyal sponsors for their support again in 2017. Bendigo ‘Community’ Bank continues as naming rights partner and with their investment in the League and our clubs, their support of community sport in Melbourne’s east is critical. We have long -standing relationships with Channel Nine, BJS Insurance, Eastlink, Yarra Valley Water, Trojan Tools and SEN 1116, along with a range of other valued partners listed at the back of the record. We also welcomed Deakin University as a major partner in 2017, with a focus on the Eastern Region Women’s Competition, and believe this partnership can be a long and fruitful one for us both. The investment of all of our sponsors in our competition allows us to

deliver and fund much of the work outlined above and is very much appreciated by the League and our clubs. We thank Knox Council and Bayswater FC for helping us host today’s game, one of the biggest events held annually in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and one which requires a significant amount of planning and effort to present. I’d like to thank my fellow Board Members, the Junior Committee led by Leon Bailey, and the EFL staff for their efforts this season. As the League gets bigger, so does the workload. As we enter the final year of a five-year planning cycle in 2018, across the five pillars of our organisation; Clubs, Participation, Partnerships, Operational Excellence and Financial Management, we are looking well placed and have the League in a strong position to continue to build for the future. Finally, to the volunteers who are the heart and soul of EFL footy I say thank-you for your valued contribution. We are all proud to be part of the EFL family and it’s the cumulative efforts of our clubs and the League that help maintain the League’s wonderful standing in the wider community. Thank-you all for your support in 2017 and we look forward to three great games today. May the best teams win.

DIVISION 1 GF PREVIEW By: Tim Fitzsimons Twitter: @TimFitzsimons6 10 months of hard work dating back to late last year in a gruelling pre-season has now lead two sides to the biggest day on the Eastern Football League calendar, the Division 1 grand final to be contested between Vermont and South Croydon. Two sides with contrasting history in Division 1 football over the years will meet to battle it out for the 2017 premiership. Vermont will be out to grasp a remarkable 22nd flag as it attempt to break the club’s second-longest premiership drought of eight years. South Croydon’s Division 1 grand final debut makes them just the 15th club to make it to the big dance in the EFL’s top division as they attempt to add to their seven senior flags. Vermont’s senior coach Harmit Singh is honoured to have the chance to lead the Eagles in their 32nd grand final and praised the legends of the club for their support towards himself and the players. “I think you just have to walk around the clubrooms to see how much success the club has had and the key people involved at the club, Craig Coghlin and the like have played in 10 premierships at the club which is enormous,” Singh said. “We love the fact that they are still involved at the club and trying to help us be the most successful club we can be.” Vermont has enjoyed a terrific season, losing just one game throughout the year and progressed straight through to the grand final after a resounding win over the Dogs in the semi final. The way the Eagles have responded after the disappointment of last season where they fell 12 points short of Balwyn in the grand final has been exceptional and although Singh hasn’t drawn on that loss as motivation over the season, he knows there will be players who are using that defeat to drive them to go one further this year. “It’s not something internally that I bring up – that 2016 season is now finished and we needed to move on to this season,” Singh said. “Individually I’m sure those players that played last year will have that fire in their stomachs to perform well and have some team success.” In their semi final clash against South Croydon, Vermont was ruthless after the main break, kicking 13 goals to none to turn a two-point deficit at half time into a 76-point victory. The Dogs were able to match Vermont in the first half before the onslaught came and Singh was pleased with his side’s ability to stick at it and

eventually control the contest after the break. “Obviously in the (semi) final we made some mistakes and were made to pay for that but all things being equal, the numbers were starting to go in our favour as we were heading into the break,” Singh said. “I think it’s about staying the course for longer and if it doesn’t come our way early, which for all intensive purposes playing a really good, strong, well-drilled team, we need to be patient and just keep being diligent with what we do and playing our role. “We feel that we are a really fit, running team that is also quite good around the contest, so I think the ability to make teams defend the whole ground when they play against us is really important.” Despite having Jake Best miss through injury, who has kicked 68 goals for the season, the Eagles managed 18 goals from a wide spread of players with four players contributing three apiece. Singh believes having many players who can hit the scoreboard can be a great strength heading into the big clash. “Definitely that was a good result for us having some diversity in our goal kickers,” Singh said. “I think for any club to have multiple options up forward just keeps opposition defenders on their toes and we feel that we have a number of players that can hit the scoreboard even without Jake Best playing.” In what is great news for Vermont fans, Best will be back and raring to go come Saturday with the forward recovering well after missing two weeks ago. “He wanted to play in that semi,” Singh said. “We decided to err on the side of caution and leave him out, so he would have been right to play last week had we lost and definitely 100% right to play this week. “We look forward to having him back in our forward line because he’s a terrific footballer.” Singh is very aware that despite winning the semi final against the Dogs quite comfortably in the end and losing just one game throughout the season, all that matters is who performs best on Saturday. “We have a number of guys that have been through it before and ultimately the results during the season mean absolutely nothing now, it’s just who plays better on the day.” On the other side of the picture, it’s also a very exciting time at South Croydon as it embarks on its

DIVISION 1 GF PREVIEW first Division 1 grand final in their history. Senior coach Leigh Adams has ensured the team soaks it up and really enjoys grand final week and everything that comes with it. “We’ve been embracing it,” Adams said. “We’ve been saying to the boys that you never know when this opportunity is going to come along again. “Obviously it’s our first one (in Division 1) so just embrace it and enjoy having the spectators along and the big crowd and what happens on Saturday will happen.” It has been a remarkable rise this season for the boys at Cheong Park, winning just 10 games over 2015 and 2016 combined to finish in the top-three this year and win their way through to the grand final after victories against Balwyn and Blackburn in the finals series. Although Adams expected quite a bit of improvement this season, even he has been somewhat surprised by how fast the team has risen to make the decider. “We thought we’d definitely improve,” Adams said. “We got some good players into the club and also another year under the game plan. At the start of the year we aimed to play finals and we probably went a little bit better than we thought. “Probably in the second-half of the year the boys did really improve and we won some big games, which probably in the past we would have lost.” The Dogs enter the grand final after a low-scoring struggle against Blackburn last week where they were able to come away with a hard-fought 16-point win. In tough conditions on a heavy ground, Adams has ensured recovery is a high priority. He believes that despite the game being a tough encounter, the fact the game wasn’t played at a fast pace across the ground has meant his players have pulled up quite well. “Although it’s a bit of a struggle physically, it probably wasn’t a game where you had to run a lot so there wasn’t blokes having to cover big kilometre games,” he said. “The boys are pretty good at the moment - we’ll have a really light week this week to make sure they’re fresh and ready to go for the weekend.” It was the South Croydon’s third final in as many weeks, with the Dogs yet to have a weekend without playing since their mid-season bye. Vermont on the other hand has played just one game in three weeks. Adams isn’t exactly sure how it will favour each team but hopes the fact his side has been playing regular football with some exhilarating wins in the finals will be an advantage. “We’ll obviously try and ride our momentum a little bit with obviously playing three weeks in a row www.efl.org.au

and a really good win on the weekend with a lot of support behind us.” “I think in the past, teams have started a little sluggish after coming off the bye but once obviously that first 10 minutes is out of the game nobody really worries about that. “You’re not really too worried about what lead up you’ve had as long as you’ve got a healthy list.” Adams was disappointed with the team’s secondhalf fade out against Vermont a couple of weeks ago but has remained positive, believing they have what it takes to match the favourites. “The third quarter is just where they got that three or four goal lead on us (and) we had a quick look at that and we’ll make a few little changes,” he said. “We think that all three times we’ve played them we’ve been with them at half time and it’s just been the third quarter that’s let us down so we just need to be better for longer.” One of the more intriguing match ups for Vermont will be Max King. The Dogs’ big recruit has swung between the ruck and deep forward for the majority of the year. Adams wants to maximise his input and believes the way his team has been structured in the latter part of the season will be the way to go come Saturday. “We’ve been playing him the majority of the second half of the year as a full forward,” he said. “We think that he’s really hard to match up on with his size and he can take a good grab. “With the form Trent Zomer is in at the moment, he’s been obviously held our number one ruck spot really well so I can’t see anything changing. I’d say Zomer will spend the majority of the time in the ruck and ‘Maxy’ will be more forward.” Heading into Saturday, South Croydon has some players with experience at higher levels with exMelbourne Demon Matt Jones in the side along with Myles Sewell, a three-time VFL premiership player with North Ballarat and Stephen Dinnell who has two VFL premiership medals of his own. They also possess some young talent who don’t have as much exposure with the intensity at a higher level or a Division 1 grand final. However, Adams has faith his younger brigade will stand up on the big stage. “I think our younger blokes will embrace it and they’ll understand that it’s probably those first 10 minutes where you’ve got to just make sure that you’re up and ready for the contest and after that I think it just becomes a normal game again,” he said. “We only played Vermont two weeks ago so we know the sort of intensity that they bring and our boys will be ready for it.” Saturday’s grand final from Bayswater Oval will be broadcast live on 98.1 Eastern FM from 1pm and also streamed through EFL.org.au. 13

MEDIA TIPS Brett Beston: It’d be a brave man that would tip against the Eagles. Vermont has lost just once compared to South Croydon’s six defeats in the regular season, with the Dogs well-beaten by the Eagles just two weeks ago in the second semi-final. The ruck dual between Max King and Liam WaleBuxton will be a key, with the battle of the sharpshooting Jakes, Best for the Eagles and Tucker for the Dogs, a mouth-watering prospect. Frank Anderson will need to continue his red-hot form along with the likes of the experienced Matt Jones and evergreen captain Dan King for the underdogs to be a chance, while the Eagles will turn to their tried and true game breakers like Robbie McComb and Adam Parker to atone for last year’s grand final heartbreak. Vermont by 30 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Tom Schneider (Vermont) Esmond Aponso: The run, carry, overall skill level and consistency in season 2017 will hold Vermont in good stead to complete a stellar year for the club with a Division 1 premiership. The defence of Vermont has been a real springboard for their outstanding winning form this season and it will hold out South Croydon on Saturday. Vermont by 30 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Joel Perry (Vermont) Matt Fotia: The best side all year, and by a fair way, the Eagles deserve to be the premiers for 2017. It seems only their mental psyche could lose this game. As much as my heart wants Daniel King on the podium, I can only see the Eagles winning. Vermont by 37 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Lachlan Johns (Vermont) Wayne Brasher: The pressure in grand finals goes up another notch than any other finals game. South Croydon has taken all before it and has performed brilliantly in this finals series and is this season’s

14

The Eastern Footballer

feel-good story. That being said Vermont won’t get it all their own way and will be challenged; however, the Eagles have been driven since last year’s grand final failure to make amends and their form throughout the season and their only final has been outstanding. For mine, it’s hard to tip against Vermont and with a wealth of experience at their disposal should see them home. Vermont by 24 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Lachlan Johns (Vermont) Gus MacLeod: Well on the final day of the EFL year we have a first timer in the big dance but I feel they will fall short. The Dogs have gone the long way after three tough games. I’m going to tip the Eagles to win this one but the margin will be the big question. I feel if the weather permits, Baysie Oval will be a treat and Vermont could put on a clinic. Vermont by 54 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Kirby McConnon Leigh Green: Vermont by 32 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Jake Best (Vermont) Daniel Cencic (EFL Media Manager): Vermont has been a side on a mission this season under the tutelage of new coach Harmit Singh. South Croydon has surprised many this finals series, clawing its way back from 21 down in the third quarter against Balwyn to record the club’s first-ever Division 1 finals win, and grinding down Blackburn last weekend to record a memorable win. The elephant in the room is Vermont’s 76-point win over South Croydon two weeks ago, with the Bulldogs simply no match for the rampaging Eagles outfit in the second-half. While I feel it will be a lot closer this time around, Vermont deserves to be outright favourites based on this, remembering it has only lost one match for the year. On the other hand, the Dogs thrive on the ‘underdog’ tag, and could surprise many yet again this Saturday. Vermont by 12 points Blue Ribbon Medal: Jake Best (Vermont)

SCHNEIDER’S PURSUIT By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL Walking into Vermont back in 2013, Tom Schneider was met with clubroom walls adorned with history, and a trophy room full of silverware from wall to wall. As the EFL’s most successful club with 21 senior premierships, the Vermont Football Club is known throughout local footy circles across the country. It was in 2009 that the Eagles last tasted the ultimate success, while two grand final defeats to arch-enemy Balwyn in 2012 and 2016 have followed. Schneider says that despite the club’s track-record of successful September campaigns, it brings no added pressure to the big stage this weekend. “I don’t think it’s an added pressure - one of the great things about being part of the club is the players you can learn from,” Schneider said. “When I first got to the club there were legends like Ryan Mullet, Nathan Henley, Simon Taylor, so I learnt a lot about the culture that we want to carry through at Vermont. “Those guys really developed the next line of Vermont champions and hopefully that culture is sustained over the next decade.” While the heartbreak of last year’s decider has been a driving force for the Eagles this season, new coach Harmit Singh and his panel have brought in a new and refreshing outlook to Terrara Road, according to Schneider. “It’s a bit of a change of pace,” he said. “Our record this year speaks volumes of the respect he’s got amongst our playing group and he’s really level-headed, especially with a lot of young players. “He’s got enormous respect from the playing group.” Vermont annihilated South Croydon to the tune of 76 points two weeks ago in the semi-final, and while Schneider believes it may give his side a slight edge, all that has come before is irrelevant come 2.30pm Saturday. “It’s probably irrelevant and in the past, anything can happen on grand final day – Norwood smashed Balwyn a few years ago (in 2014) then Balwyn smashed them the very next year (2015),” he said. “There might be a slight mental edge we’ll have over them but they had a lot of injuries early in that game as well. “We’ll be going in confident but definitely not going in easy.” Avoiding the clichés of grand final week, Schneider has a sense of the occasion, in what is the biggest day on the EFL calendar. “You’ve got to embrace it, because it is bigger than other weeks but I think you if try and shy away from the fact that it is a bigger week than usual, you’ll be unprepared come Saturday,” he said.

www.efl.org.au

“Having the extra week off has given us time to settle down and enjoy the week and look forward to Saturday.” The premiership heroes of the past will be eagerly watching on come Saturday, from the stars of yesteryear such as Craig Coghlan, Bernie Dinneen, and long-time stalwart Lee Bidstrup while the current Vermont group has a chance to create its own history and snap the eight-year premiership hiatus that many would consider a drought for the high-achieving Eagles. “They’ll all be back at the clubrooms on Saturday night, win or lose (and) we understand as a group and how to better the result from last year,” Schneider said. “We’ve got a different coaching group and had a couple of sessions down at Glen Waverley which is a bigger oval which is trying to acclimatise us to the bigger ground of Bayswater.” Schneider expects to match-up on any of South Croydon’s star-studded midfield, in his pursuit for his first flag. “I don’t think it’s any secret they’ve got a great, experienced midfield – Matt Jones, ‘Sewelly’ (Miles Sewell) and Dan King, so I’m sure I’ll have one of them or all three of them at some stage throughout the game,” he said.

STATSBENCH Look who is here! The Statsbench makes a cameo appearance for the Division 1 grand final. Vermont have a finals pedigree almost without peer. The Eagles will play in their 30th EFL senior grand final today – a ratio of a granny less than Noel McPhee @statsbench every two years. South Croydon play in its first Division 1 grand final and have a pretty good finals’ history themselves. The Bulldogs have lost just two of their 10 grand finals and one of those was in extra time. The elephant in the room is the Vermont aura. The Eagles have a current streak against South Croydon of 12 and that is not their best. After the Bulldogs won the first match between the two sides, Vermont strung together the next 13. All Matches Vermont

From the Statsbench archives and not so archival: South Croydon are the 15th team to play in an EFL Division 1 Grand Final. If South Croydon win they will move to outright third in the list of EFL Premierships: Vermont 21, East Burwood 12 and then the Bulldogs will be on 8. Vermont becomes the first team to reach 1100 EFL matches with the grand final. Donvale became the first team to win an EFL Premiership in all four Divisions. Bayswater has changed divisions more than any other team in the EFL; its 2018 move back to Division 2 will mark the 16th time they have changed divisions.

DARE TO DREAM By: Tim Fitzsimons Twitter: @TimFitzsimons6 Stephen Dinnell always hoped that he would one day have the chance to play in a Division 1 grand final for South Croydon, even during his years in the VFL with North Ballarat. Although he may not have truly believed this could realistically happen, with the Dogs having not made the finals series over the past three seasons, he now finds himself running out onto Bayswater Oval for the 2017 decider. “I always had it as a bit of a dream but maybe not realistically did I think we’d be playing off in one,” Dinnell said. “I always hoped we would but given the way the last couple of years had gone, I was a bit more hopeful this year and to get there, it’s amazing.” Dinnell has praised the support around the club and is thrilled to be playing in the big dance, but he is also aware that the job isn’t done and they are still one win away from the ultimate glory. “The atmosphere around the club this whole year really, but especially since the weekend has been fantastic,” he said. “We’ve been really looking forward to getting down to training and enjoying the week but keeping in mind we’ve got one more game still to go.” Dinnell spent many years up in Ballarat playing for the Roosters in the VFL. His career at North Ballarat may have been a bit longer than he originally anticipated but his heart always beat red, white and blue and knew he would be finishing his football back at Cheong Park. “Early days I always thought I’d only spend a couple of years up in Ballarat and then head back and be playing at South Croydon a lot earlier,” he said. “As it turned out I got a job up there and the team (North Ballarat) was just starting to go alright - we had a core group of guys up in Ballarat that went on then to win three flags so the timing just wasn’t right to come back and play at South back then. “I went overseas for a year and after that I was always going to play the rest of my days at South Croydon.” The attachment at South Croydon was always strong, even throughout his days at the Roosters. He would often stay in touch with the club when possible and it is no surprise that he found himself back there once his VFL days came to an end. Dinnell was pleased to see the Dogs perform well in the lower divisions during his time away from the club and always had a connection with many people at the club. “I still had brothers, cousins, some of my best mates www.efl.org.au

that I grew up with playing at the club when I was playing up in Ballarat,” he said. “I still came back as often as I could when I was playing games in Melbourne on a Sunday and that sort of thing so I was always still keeping up to date on how they were going and hoping they would get up to Division 1 and they managed to do that.” Dinnell has plenty of experience on the big stage at a high level, playing in premierships for North Ballarat and also putting in a best on ground performance for the Eastern Rangers back in his under-18 year. He hopes this will hold him in good stead heading into Saturday’s clash against Vermont. “I’m still as excited as I was for any of those games, if not more so just because of the big journey the club’s been on since I’ve been involved as a junior and all the way through,” he said. “Hopefully it just means I’ve got a bit of a wise head there and don’t get overawed by the situation and hopefully I can offer a little bit of advice to some of the guys. “I haven’t played in a grand final since 2010 so it’s been a while and being my age, I’m pretty aware of the fact it could be my last as well so I’ve just got to make the most of it.” Dinnell is under no allusions that he is coming into the closing stages of what has been a terrific career. However, he still believes he has plenty to give, especially over next season and hasn’t made any retirement plans just yet. “I will certainly play again next year the way that the body is feeling this year,” he said. “I think I’ve managed 19 of the 21 games this year so I’ll go around next year - the body is in pretty good shape. “I know I’m pretty close to the end and if I have a rough run of injuries, that will probably be it next year.” No matter when Dinnell decides to hang up the boots, he always has a place at South Croydon and the veteran cannot see himself leaving the club as he plans to stay at Cheong Park for many years to come. “I’ll be involved in the footy club certainly,” he said. “I’ve been helping out with the coaching the last two, three, maybe even four years with assistant coaching and it’s something that I’m interested in but I prefer focusing on the playing side at the moment. “I love the club and people that are involved so I guess I’ll think about that a bit more next year but I’m just enjoying being part of this at the moment.” 21

DIVISION 1 - CLUB NOTES VERMONT - To have three teams here today is certainly an honour for our club and testament to the work put in by current and recent coaches and of course our incredible junior club. We thank the many volunteers who support the teams in some many ways and those who serve the club on various committees. We also thank the wonderful sponsors who continue to be involved as well as our coterie group, the Eagletonians. Of course, our biggest thank-you goes to the coaches - Harmit Singh, Paul Breen, John Brown, all of their assistants and to our wonderful players. You have given yourselves and the club three chances to create some history. Sadly, we wear black armbands today in memory of Max Waller who passed away earlier in the week. Max was a life member, past player and secretary for five years during the ‘80s. SOCIAL - all Vermont supporters are welcome back at the clubrooms tonight. Tomorrow the clubrooms will be open from 12 noon featuring entertainment from the one and only Jimmy Davidis and our sensational grand final Raffle. After that we have our usual post grand final Monday lunch at the Wantirna Hill Club and then we have two presentation nights at the club - the under-19s next Thursday 28th of September and the seniors on Friday 29th --- history is created by the deeds of today. EFL GRAND FINAL UMPIRES FIELD NATHAN McDONALD: A young talented umpire who has only just turned 22 years of age umpiring his first Division 1 grand final. Although young in age, Nathan is a very experienced and talented umpire who was field umpire of the year in 2016 and followed that up by being named field umpire of the year in 2017, an outstanding achievement. Following on from a very successful 2016 season in not only being named field umpire of the year, Nathan then went on to umpire the Division 2 senior grand final and he has exceeded that this year with a very consistent year. A very dedicated umpire who prepares himself to ensure he achieves the maximum results from his endeavours and this work ethic not only during the game but in his preparation, has seen Nathan achieve the highest result for a field umpire, that being field umpire of the year and also Division 1 senior field umpire. JASON HERMANN: One of our more consistent and experienced field umpires, Jason is umpiring in his second Division 1 grand final having umpired his first in 2015, following this up with a Division 2 grand final in 2016. An extremely hard-working umpire not only on match day but also during any training session, Jason is always at the forefront leading the way where this has carried through from the very first pre-season training session through to the very last training session of the season. Hard work and preparation for match day is something that Jason excels at and he leaves nothing to chance to ensure that from the opening siren of the game to the completion of the game, his work-rate will not drop or diminish. Hard work, consistency and preparation has seen Jason being rewarded with this Division 1 grand final. DAN BEARD: Dan umpired his first Division 1 senior grand final as a 17-year-old and then went to the VFL where he umpired 220 senior games before returning to the EFL. Since returning, Dan has umpired the last seven Division 1 grand finals, with today being his eighth in a row.

GOAL UMPIRES COREY BROWN: Corey commenced his umpiring career in 2009 with the EFL. His desired discipline in his early years was as a boundary umpire. In 2011, he was invited to the VFL and continued as a boundary umpire until 2014. In 2015, he returned to the EFL and decided to become a goal umpire in 2016. In total, Corey has umpired 260 games including finals (boundary and goal) with the EFL. Corey is very coachable and his desire to continually improve is utmost in his mind on match day regardless of the game he has been appointed to. Today, Corey has been selected to officiate in his first Division 1 senior grand final and on behalf of his peers we wish him well. CHARLES ABETZ: Charles commenced his goal umpiring career as a 16-year-old with the Bendigo & District Football League in 2002. In 2012 after coming to Melbourne, he decided to join the EFL. In that time Charles has umpired 191 games including senior and junior finals. Like Corey, Charles is very coachable and his commitment and desire 24

The Eastern Footballer

to keep on improving is also utmost in his mind. Today, Charles has been selected to officiate in his first Division 1 senior grand final. He has thoroughly deserved this appointment and I know that his peers congratulate him on his success.

BOUNDARY TRISTAN WEBB: Caps off another fantastic season, after having been involved in last year Division 1 senior GF, and named boundary umpire of the year in 2016. Tristan had the opportunity this pre-season to trial with the VFL squad, but fell short, due to a troubling back which interrupted a final hit out. His return to our squad was obviously strengthened, and further put pressure on our developing umpires to step up. Tristan had set a benchmark from the get-go, however, after umpiring over the Queen’s Birthday weekend at Blackburn, the unthinkable occurred, he’d broken his ulna and radius bones in his throwing arm, after tripping on a sprinkler head on the ground, whilst running backwards. To his testament, Tristan umpired the game out, not knowing the extent of the injury. Six weeks out of football, and a tough talk during this period, Tristan had thought his season was done. We were proven wrong! Grit, determination, and belief has cemented this young man’s position into the 2017 Division 1 GF. BRODIE ECCLES: This year Brodie’s maturity to following instructions was never challenged, instead he let his umpiring do the talking. He was given the opportunity to umpire in this year’s interleague carnival, participated in the world international cup carnival, held in Melbourne through our home and away season, and managed to umpire in every home and away Division 1 senior games. Renowned by his peers as “the best in the business”, Brodie’s personal qualities and umpire attributes will certainly cap off another fantastic year, but also the opportunity to trial next season with the VFL. HAMISH LAZARO: ‘Hammer’ joined us last season in his first year of umpiring. After several weeks in the lower grades, proving his ability and displaying the craft of umpiring, we had to give this kid a crack in first division seniors. From the time forth, Hammer hasn’t looked back for a second. Last year Hamish capped off the year, umpiring in the Division 2 senior GF. His commitment to his running in the off season racing track and field, and combining his umpiring commitment and cross country schedule has been a true testament to this young man’s character. DAVID MITCHELL: Came to the EFL in 2014 to commence his umpiring on the boundary under then-coach Des Seaton. A track athlete by design, Dave flourishes over 200, 400 and 800m distances in the track & field season, representing Victoria at several national championships. To his credit, Dave has an endurance tank, and a sprinter’s kick to boot. It wasn’t until this year, at a game at Bayswater where the light switch was turned on, Dave Mitchell the boundary umpire had arrived. Dave follows up on last year’s appointment to the Division 1 reserves GF, to now umpire in his first senior Division 1 GF.

CHANDLER MEDAL REVIEW Over 400 people attended the Eastern Football League’s night of nights on Wednesday at Manningham Club, for the annual Chandler Medal evening. Doncaster’s Chris Annakis took out the coveted Division 1 best and fairest, the Chandler Medal, off the back of a stellar season which saw the versatile midfielder and forward play all 19 games for the Sharks, kicking 26 goals and often proving pivotal to his side on game-day. Annakis also represented the EFL at this year’s Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, playing a crucial role in the narrow victory over the fast-finishing EDFL. Mulgrave’s Sebastian Henderson was named the Kenneth Wright Medallist with the Division 2 best and fairest, as the solid defender often played a swingman role throughout 2017 causing opposition coaches and players headaches at the selection table with match-ups. Meanwhile, Ringwood spearhead Trent Farmer had a night to savour, taking out the Paul Edie Medal with the Division 3 best and fairest, in addition to winning the Division 3 goal-kicking and being named captain of the Division 3 SEN Team of the Year. Division 4 saw Kilsyth’s Sean Currey awarded the

www.efl.org.au

Perc James Medal for the best and fairest player, after a consistent season which saw his Cougars just miss the finals. Bayswater’s Marissa Lee was awarded the best and fairest player for the Deakin University Eastern Region Women’s Competition, finishing the highest up in the voting of all EFL clubs, and two behind overall winner, AFL Yarra Ranges’ Melanie Hogg of Mount Evelyn. Meanwhile, team-mate Leesa McShane took out the leading goal-kicker award, rounding out a sensational season for the Waters, who finished inaugural premiers. Melissa Martinov (Boronia) was crowned leading goal-shooter for the Premier Division of the netball competition, while Stephanie McNay won the Premier best and fairest. Brett Beston was named the 2017 Clinton Grybas Award winner, having worked tirelessly on the EFL Media Team this year across a variety of roles including commentary, special comments, boundary-riding, panel member, plus more. For a full list of award winners, make sure you head to EFL.org.au.

COMPLETE INJURY CARE The EFL is pleased to announce we have created a program with five leading medical providers to establish a player injury care program unrivalled in community sport.

from internationally trained and highly regarded surgeons.

The program is EFL Complete Injury Care, and through Lifecare, Vermont Urgent Care, Capital Radiology, Sports Med Biologic and Orthopaedic Specialists Melbourne, we are creating a level of expert care for EFL players usually reserved for those at the elite level.

Concussion is, understandably, an important topic for our industry. It’s an area research has shown most local GP’s aren’t comfortable dealing with, and that as an industry we need to be cognisant of providing the best level of care possible. Through this program and the fast access to the level of care available at Sports Med Biologic this is possible.

Lifecare, are a leading provider of physiotherapy and sports medicine services who have had a relationship with the EFL for in excess of 25 years. Vermont Urgent Care is a walk in doctor’s surgery open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to provide immediate care to injured players without waiting for hours at the public hospital or paying significant money before you walk in the door at a private hospital, with X-Ray available. Capital Radiology provide the full range of radiology services such as X-ray, CT scans and MRI, with quality care and fast communication with patients and other medical professionals. Sports Med Biologic are a sports medical clinic based in Box Hill of which the doctors have experience at the elite level of sport, mostly with AFL clubs, and will provide expert concussion care, both pre-screening and post injury management. And Orthopaedic Specialists Melbourne will help provide quick access to expert orthopaedic services

Vermont Urgent Care - Walk in Doctors Clinic. No appointment needed. 5 Boronia Road, Vermont http://vermonturgentcare.com.au/ Ph: 9874 3344

The program helps address two key concerns.

The second is when a player is hurt and needs immediate attention, or looks to have seriously injured themselves. With this program, the player can be assessed on the weekend at Vermont Urgent Care, be in getting scans on Monday at Capital Radiology, if they need to consult with an orthopaedic surgeon it will be done in a couple of days though OSM, and if surgery is required they could be on the operating table by the end of the week. Then post-surgery they can get expert rehabilitation though Lifecare to help get back on the ground ASAP. It’s a level of care only seen at the elite level but now available to community footballers. Keep your eye on the EFL website (efl.org.au) for more information on the program or contact the provider directly via the details below.
