MENT PROFILE

FORT MORGAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Fort Morgan Police Department is responsible for handling approximately 27,000 32,000 calls every year. These calls range from parking and traffic to domestic violence calls and homicides. Most of these calls are handled by the patrol staff with support from investigations on major calls and code enforcement for ordinance violations Patrol is made up of 20 certified and sworn law enforcement officers to include sergeants, corporals, and patrol officers. When fully staffed, the Fort Morgan Police Department has a staff of 32 sworn officers (including command staff and investigators) and 6 non sworn full time personnel, along with 2 part time employees This makes the PD, the largest department in the City of Fort Morgan Officers are very hard to find and the applicants have dwindled over the past few years so we have never reached the full employment. If an officer comes to us already graduated from a police academy, they are certified, but not ready to work. They must complete a Field Training Officer program that lasts approximately 16 weeks before they are able to work on their own Several of our officers have been hired as civilian employees and have attended the academy as an employee of the city The academy lasts for 22 weeks, meaning that the average officer attends 1,520 hours of training before they are able to patrol on their own. our INSPIRATION

Most people in the police department enjoy working here because they have a servant’s heart. Having the ability to impact the lives of so many people that are dealing with some of the worst things that any of us could ever imagine is satisfying Knowing that we can have a positive impact on those that are suffering from devastating circumstances and preventing others from going through such turmoil is the greatest gift our employees can give the public and we strive to do so daily.

THE BETTER SLEEP STORE

In order to succeed in business, especially today, an entrepreneur needs to be a risk taker and a visionary. He or she needs to demonstrate creativity. Such an individual needs to recognize a need and respond to it. This certainly was the case for Ron Forstedt and his business partner when they first opened an enterprising furniture, appliance, and sewing machine store in 1946.

They help get all of our beds and furniture lined up at a great price. What do nylon stockings, pool balls, and a mattress have in common? These visionary elements all played a role in the history and the makings of tonight’s Business of the Month recipient.

ECONOM BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

Tonight it is my honor and privilege to announce that the Better Sleep Store has been selected as this month’s Business of the Month honor for its valuable contributions to our community.

THE BETTER SLEEP STORE

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to The Better Sleep Store. Thank you for the many years of outstanding work and contributions you have provided in order to make Fort Morgan a great place to live, work, and enjoy. After World War II, nylon stockings were scarce. Ron’s discovery and pursuit of 1000 pairs of this in demand fashion accessary launched and skyrocketed the business When word got out (probably faster than Facebook’s Buy and Sell bulletin board), the line of women wanting nylons stretched three blocks down Main Street in Fort Morgan. The proceeds from those nylons bought the first inventory for the Fort Morgan Sewing Machine and Furniture Exchange Company The store was originally located at 214, 216, and 218 Main Street, which now houses La Michocana and others after a sale several years ago Current owners and operators, Jim and Deb Forstedt purchased the business operations from Jim’s parents in 1978, and it became Fort Morgan Furniture Ltd. In 1980, the Forstedts increased their footprint by purchasing 220 Main Street, the original site of the town’s beloved Saratoga Lunch Room and Pool Hall where it was rumored that Glenn Miller racked pool balls after school. Once again, in 1997, the furniture store increased its space and inventory and purchased 224 Main Street The Better Sleep Store has mattresses . . . lots of mattresses! However, the business also boasts an inventory of related bedroom furniture, casual living room furniture, and a variety of home décor items It also houses several pieces of local artwork for sale.

The Better Sleep Store is deserving of the Business of the Month award for its commitment to its customers and our city. The Forstedts have been regular promoters of local artists and have hosted the monthly art walks since the event’s inception. They also have participated with several of the downtown business merchants’ joint promotional efforts to bring traffic to the downtown area, and have been a member and supporter of the Fort Morgan Chamber of Commerce. As quoted by Deb in a Fort Morgan Times article about their approach to operations: “After all these years of being in business in Fort Morgan, we know our customers. We care about our customers. We live next door to our customers, (and) we have their best interest in mind.”
