WELLNESS

BLOOD PRESSURE AWARENESS MONTH

May is Blood Pressure Awareness Month and this gives us an opportunity to focus on learning about high blood pressure and hypertension, and what steps we can take to reduce our risk and lower our blood pressure.

UPCOMING WELLNESS CHALLENGE IN MAY

1. Know Your Numbers. Everyone ages 3 and older should get their blood pressure checked by a health care provider at least once a year

2. Eat Healthy. Follow a heart-healthy eating plan, such as NHLBI’s Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH). For example, use herbs for flavor instead of salt and add one fruit or vegetable to every meal.

3 Move More. Get at least 2 1/2 hours of physical activity each week to help lower and control blood pressure.

4. Aim for a Healthy Weight. If you ’ re overweight, losing just 3-5% of your weight can improve blood pressure.

5 Manage Stress. Stress can increase your blood pressure and make your body store more fat. Reduce stress with meditation, relaxing activities or support from a counselor or online group.

NEW BLOOD PRESSURE KIOSK AVAILABLE FOR SENIORS AT THE GENE DOTY SENIOR CENTER!

The new blood pressure machine is free of charge for regular guests and visitors to the Senior Center to help them better monitor their own health.

The new machine is located in the billiards room and can be accessed during regular business hours M-F 8am-5pm.

6. Have a Healthy Pregnancy. High blood pressure during pregnancy can harm the mother and baby. It also increases a woman ’ s risk of having high blood pressure later in life Talk to your health care provider about high blood pressure.

7. Stop Smoking. The chemicals in tobacco smoke can harm your heart and blood vessels.

8. Work with Your Doctor. Get help setting your target blood pressure. Write down your numbers every time you get your blood pressure checked.

To find more information about high blood pressure as well as resources for tracking your numbers, visit nhlbi.nih.gov/hypertension.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING

I took my fur baby in on an emergency visit and everyone was wonderful! They have been great throughout her follow-up visits and any questions I have, they are more than happy to answer. Their fees are extremely reasonable too!

Service is great. I feel like they care enough to go the extra step for our animals. That means a lot to my family. Thanks so much for keeping our furry family healthy.

FORT MORGAN VETERINARY CLINIC

The Fort Morgan Veterinary Clinic, located at 1215 East Burlington Street in Fort Morgan, was founded in 1976 by founders Dr. Dick Simmons and Dr. Don Ostwald (who, incidentally, participated on the City’s Historic Preservation Board for several years).

Through the past four decades, the clinic has continued to evolve and offers a vast amount of routine and emergency services for both large and small animals, including dogs, cats, pigs, cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and even some exotics. Animals can receive preventive care, vaccinations, parasite control treatment, nutrition advice, and microchipping. The clinic also offers pharmaceutical medicines, dentistry, such as teeth cleaning, polishing, and tooth extractions; lab, x-ray & ultrasound diagnostics, and minor surgical care including wounds, hernia repair, cesareans, spay & neuter, orthopedic procedures, foreign body removal, and tumor biopsy and removal.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING

The clinic recently expanded its services to include companion laser therapy as a means to provide a non-invasive, pain-free, and drug-free treatment used to treat a variety of conditions and applications ranging from arthritis treatment and skin problems to wound care and ear infections to stimulate the body to heal from within, increase circulation, and reduce inflammation. Our Business of the Month recipient has also upgraded its equine dentistry equipment in recent years and offers motorized dentistry, a full mouth speculum, and new hand floats. Plans are being made for a new small animal clinic to accommodate six veterinarians with expanded diagnostics and treatment capabilities

Compassion is an essential attribute for success, and our honoree continues to demonstrate its commitment and impact to the Fort Morgan community. These professionals are known to travel daily on country roads sometimes through inclement weather and risk being kicked by animals that weigh far more than they do to perform surgery, help with a difficult 2:00 a m delivery, or administer emergency care

Throughout its history, this animal clinic has found affordable ways to medically treat pets, such as sponsoring microchipping and monthly vaccine clinics. Their dedication to animal welfare is evident in the establishment of Paws to Help, a financial aid program to help offset medical costs for animals experiencing trauma or injury The clinic team members are involved in various community outreach programs, such as volunteering at the county fair by providing health examinations at check-in, further showing their dedication to animal welfare Throughout the year, the four veterinarians serve on advisory boards, visit several schools for career days, and provide opportunities for students to shadow them in order to gain insight into the profession Our Business of the Month honoree works with local law enforcement agencies and the Fort Morgan Humane Society to provide urgent care for lost, injured, or sick animals.

The four clinic veterinarians are assisted by a dedicated team of four certified vet technicians, four receptionists, three vet assistants, and a practice manager who aid in providing health care sometimes 24/7, 365 days a year depending on circumstances and the need for emergency care. With rapidly growing advances, the doctors and technicians regularly complete continuing education courses to keep current in the field.

FORT MORGAN VETERINARY CLINIC

Each month, the Business of the Month distinction is given to a Fort Morgan business that excels in such areas as pride in their business, top-notch customer service, growth, active involvement in area organizations and programs, and community contributions that assist in creating a better quality of life.

We appreciate the sacrifices you make to improve the wellbeing of the animals and the people they serve, the alleviation of suffering of our non-human companions, the medical advancements you have made in rendering care, and protecting our environment from disease.

We recognize and thank Fort Morgan Veterinary Clinic for the outstanding work and contributions they continue to provide in order to make Fort Morgan a better and healthier place.
