National Nutrition Month was created in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Everyone is encouraged to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits and incorporating physical activity into their lives.
Eating healthy doesn’t need to be a stressful experience. Just remember that every hunger
pang is an opportunity to add more nutrients to your body. Once you begin eating healthier foods that you enjoy, you might find that you feel better. Keep the following healthy food suggestions in mind as you fuel your health:
Eat more fruits and vegetables. Choose whole grains over processed, white bread.
Swap unhealthy snacks with healthier options like nuts or dried fruits. Eat a variety of protein sources such as poultry, fish, beans, or tofu. Limit your added sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons a day for women and 9 teaspoons for men.

CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE
INGREDIENTS:
For the brisket:
3-4 lb. corned beef brisket
3-4 cloves garlic (minced)
1 tsp black pepper
For the sides:
1 head cabbage
2 onions
2 carrots
2 TBSP butter (or ghee)
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp caraway seeds
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp basil
DIRECTIONS for the Crock-Pot:
1.
2.
First, drain brine, rinse brisket under cool water, and put it in Crock-Pot. Add garlic, pepper, and enough fresh water to just cover meat. (Do not use the brine ... it will be too salty!)
3.
4.
5.
6.
Turn the Crock-Pot on low and cook for 8 hours.
About half an hour before beef is done, chop cabbage, onion, garlic, and carrots. Saute onions, carrots, and garlic in butter or ghee in large skillet until somewhat soft. Add cabbage and spices and cook until soft. Add a little corned beef water from the crockpot if it starts to get dry.
7.
Serve the corned beef over the cabbage and veggies.
We take a moment this month to celebrate employees who have earned a Shout Out, and acknowledge their hard work and accomplishments!
A big shout out to all the people involved in snow removal!
It takes an army, not just a single department. Thank you to Streets, Parks, Recreation, Cemetery, Golf Maintenance, and all the Utility employees. Everyone has been busy this winter keeping up with mother nature and snow removal. Great job!
-from Ty HamerA big shout out to Collette Brost!
She does so much behind the scenes to help our departments work; she is invaluable.
If there is a problem with bid info, project questions, or whatever it may be, one phone call to Collette and it is fixed. She is always there to help, always there for advice and keeps everything organized. I can’t say enough good about her.
-from J.W.
Jonathan (Jon) Renteria, a former Fort Morgan Police Officer from 2013 - 2022, has decided to come back to the City effective February 21. Jon started in law enforcement in 2010. He left the City in April last year for what he might call a “vacation from law enforcement," but missed it so much he is back Jon says he is anxious to work for the FMPD again. Jon grew up in Goodland, KS and Wray, CO, and has been in Fort Morgan since 2013. When he is not working, he enjoys hunting, playing golf with his oldest son and camping and fishing with his kids.
Originally from Fort Morgan and always liked Browns. Was in town yesterday and went to shop. Still the same old town feel with people who really care about getting you the right shoes and fit. So much so, that I bought six pairs. This is not your run-of-the-mill shoe store. Thanks girls for all of your help and advice trying on my shoes. I’ll be back.
Great selection of quality shoes, helpful staff, and good purses.
Brown’s Shoe Fit Company has been selected as this month’s Business of the Month recipient for its valuable contributions to our community. This well-established retailer has been a part of Fort Morgan for nearly 60 years and is one of only four Brown’s Shoe locations in Colorado. The store that originated in Shenandoah, Iowa, is now found in 12 mid-western states throughout the country The shoe retailer operates on a unique business model with employee ownership that has started to become more in vogue in recent years. Each Brown’s Shoe store is locally owned. Every manager becomes a vested partner in Brown’s Shoe Fit, owning a share of their store and is given the opportunity to invest in other company stores. This approach is different than the vast majority and creates a culture of shared ideas, community investment, and responsibility for customer satisfaction efforts. In turn, this emphasis on customer satisfaction creates a competitive advantage, which Brown’s Shoe is known for in the shoe and apparel industry.
Brown’s Shoe still honors its “sit and fit” approach where individuals receive undivided attention from the sales associate who will measure foot length and width and help customers make educated choices on the footwear that will work best in terms of fit and comfort for the customer Customers throughout Northeast Colorado enjoy the friendly service, attention, and breadth of knowledge about various orthotics and foot related issues. Brown’s Shoe Fit Company can also special order shoes for their customers.
Their extensive collection of merchandise that includes approximately 35 brands of footwear, as well as other accessories, socks, and support insoles, is appreciated and among consumers of all ages and occupations.
Kennedy Ourth is the 5th owner of the Fort Morgan store, located at 315 Main Street, which also employs three others
In addition to a thriving consumer retail business, Brown’s Shoe has been growing operations by expanding its businessto-business sales, including its work boot division. They have recently become the exclusive boot vendor for DFA. BNSF Railroad, Cargill, and even some of the city departments regularly utilize Brown’s to find work boots that fit their particular industrial needs
As mentioned earlier, Brown’s Shoe Fit Company contributes to the Fort Morgan community in several ways. Under Kennedy’s leadership, the store has led efforts in giving back to others less fortunate It contributes to the Foster Love Community Closet Drive and issues gift cards for donations made through the clothing drive. Additionally, our BOM candidate supports the Golden Star holiday drive as well as donating to Rising Up. On various occasions, it has served as an artist host for the local CACE community art walk and has been active in various downtown business promotional efforts such as the Trick or Treat Trail, Shop Small Business, and other joint holiday shopping events.
Each month, the Business of the Month distinction is given to a Fort Morgan business that excels in such areas as pride in their business, top-notch customer service, growth, active involvement in area organizations and programs, and community contributions that assist in creating a better quality of life.
We recognize and thank Kennedy and the team at Brown's Shoe Fit Company for the outstanding work and contributions they continue to provide in order to make Fort Morgan a great place to live, work, and enjoy.
