Welcome! MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER This month, tying into “National Golf” month, we are pleased to showcase the electric department, since we know all those guys do is golf! Just kidding, we know those guys don’t golf. Doug Linton doesn’t even know which end of the bat to hold! Seriously though, this month we recognize our hard-working staff in Golf Maintenance and Parks. Join me in thanking these dedicated individuals for providing us several great places to get outside and recreate.

Staff in the parks department manage and maintain over 64 acres of turf, over 600 acres of native areas, many trees and a large number of flower displays throughout the City. The staff also maintains several City amenities such as the restrooms in several parks, picnic shelters, playgrounds, courts and other park facilities, several miles of trails around town and numerous trash receptacles scattered amongst the City. Additionally, these guys and gals help clear snow from several City owned parking lots and sidewalks adjacent to City facilities. The staff at Quail Dunes golf course meticulously manages over 165 acres of fairways, rough areas and greens. This work requires precision turf management and very detailed attention to watering, fertilizing and aeration that is nothing like maintaining your backyard lawn. The staff must work early and overnight to be ready for play each day. Did you know it takes 500,000 gallons of water a day to water the golf course? Imagine if you had that water bill at home! We are wrapping up the summer concert series and Thursday night live events this month. I hope you were able to get out and about as the staff worked to provide some outdoor fun. I hope you enjoy all the information in this month's edition of the newsletter and we’ll see you around town!

Steve Glammeyer Hello and welcome to another edition of the “Message from the Manager” and City Employee Newsletter. I hope you've been enjoying the newsletters each month. Remember, this was a request from you identified in the all-employee survey we conducted at the beginning of the year. You asked for better communication and wanted to learn more about other departments. Hopefully, you learned something new about the super staff in the Recreation and Cemetery departments last month.

AUGUST WELLNESS

NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH August 15th is National Relaxation Day! As we continue to exercise, eat healthy and drink water, it is important that we also RELAX! Some days, life feels like a blur. We are on the proverbial roller coaster of life, with all of the ups, downs, spins and circles that we can handle. On National Relaxation Day, the goal is to slow down and notice the awesome things that surround us. Slow down and breathe. One of the simplest ways to slow down is through deep breathing several times a day. Deep breathing helps to: • Expand our lungs • Provide energy when we experience the afternoon lull • Serve as a break from the increase of stress during our day • Get focused when faced with a difficult situation or project • Increase our capacity for problem solving

Relaxation and Massage We know that relaxation and massage feels good – physically. Stress causes the blood vessels to constrict and this reduced circulation causes the muscles to become tense and sore. This decreased circulation to our brain also

• Decrease muscle tension, headaches and increased heart rate Try deep breathing today and notice the effect it has on us. Once started, it will soon become one of the best stress busters in your arsenal.

hinders our ability to focus, problem-solve and be productive. Massage can relieve such problems in these ways: • Increases circulation • Stimulates nerve receptors causing the blood vessels to dilate • Increases oxygen capacity and loosening muscles

• Forces us to be still and removes us out of the hectic pace • Allows our mind to relax so that it can gear up when needed All of this is great for promoting the body’s relaxation response. A relaxed and healthy body promotes a relaxed and healthy mind. We become more focused and productive after a great massage.

Our mental health is also important and massage can play an important role in helping us to relax and keep life in perspective. Go out and treat yourself to relaxing massage!

Focus on Being Quiet to Reduce Stress Stop Yelling – being quiet reduces our stress. Today is the day to lower the noise level. Studies on stress show increased risk for such serious physiological problems as peptic ulcers, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Quiet time helps the body relax and lowers blood pressure and heart rate.

What we want to do is to reduce our negative reactions to stress so that we don’t become sick, worn down, and worn out. Start by adding one relaxation technique to your daily checklist of things to do.
