Welcome!

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

The FMPD is comprised of officers and civilians that serve under direction of the Chief of Police, and is the largest department in the City. When staffed at capacity, the PD has 32 sworn officers, 6 non-sworn full-time employees, and 2 part-time employees. Though the lobby hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, members of the police force serve our community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fort Morgan is fortunate to have the brave and conscientious people in our police department, who work to ensure they represent themselves with pride and act with professionalism, integrity and a service mindset. Thanks to their dedication and effort, Fort Morgan is ranked the 14th safest City in Colorado! I encourage you to look at the ‘Department Profile’ section of this newsletter to read more in-depth about their work, and join me in thanking them for all they do. On a separate note, I would like to use this opportunity to emphasize how much I have enjoyed serving as your City Manager. Thank you to each and every one of you for your hard work in making our City a great place to live and work. Together we have made many great strides for the advancement of our community, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside you in these endeavors. As you may know, our former Mayor and Utilities Director, Ron Shaver, has graciously agreed to fill the role of interim City Manager until a permanent replacement can be found. He has been making his way around the City to meet as many of you as possible, and will be shadowing me until my final day, August 5. We are working to get his email and office set up, so please reach out to us if you have any questions and feel free to stop by and say hi if you are out and about near City Hall.

Steve Glammeyer Welcome to a new edition of the “Message from the Manager” and City Employee Newsletter. I hope you enjoyed last month’s edition and learned a lot about our Quail Dunes Golf Pro Shop. This month and next month we are profiling the men and women of the Fort Morgan Police Department (FMPD).

As always, thank you for all you do, and please enjoy this month’s edition of the newsletter.

AUGUST WELLNESS

Wellness is a connection of paths: knowledge and action. --Joshua Holtz

August celebrates National Wellness Month. This month focuses on self-care, stress management, and creating healthy routines. If you are looking for an excuse to make a change, start this month in support of National Wellness Month. Self-care is an important part of well-being for us as well as those around us. It can take 21 days for something to become a habit and 90 days for it to be a lifestyle change. Practicing self-care, managing stress, being mindful, practicing self-compassion, and focusing on proper nutrition and exercise are all things you could work towards incorporating into your daily routine. Here are some simple self-care habits to start including into your daily routine to help improve your well-being.

NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH • Drink more water. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Water helps give you energy, flushes toxins from your body, improves concentration, and can even help with weight loss. • Stretch or practice yoga. If you are on your feet all day, or sitting at a desk most of the day, stretching daily can help improve your posture, heal back pain, as well as ease your mind. • Try something new. Whether it be a new bike route, exploring a new restaurant, or volunteering. Doing something new can help improve your mental outlook and make you feel good overall. • Prioritize exercise. There are so many benefits to exercising including pain management, letting stress out, boosting confidence, as well as increasing strength, and so much more. • Pay attention. If something is making you feel overwhelmed or stressed, pay attention and act. Go take a walk, try a breathing technique, talk to a friend, find something to help alleviate the overwhelming feeling, and give yourself the opportunity to slow down. • Make healthy food choices. Food can impact the way you feel. Having a balanced diet and good nutrition will help nourish your body and lead to good overall health.

Take this month dedicated to wellness as your chance to begin creating and incorporating healthy routines into your daily life. Adding one or two of these habits daily or weekly can lead to big changes over time.

DEPARTMENT PROFILE

FORT MORGAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

Thank you to the

our WORK Keep working even when no one is watching. --Alex Morgan

The Fort Morgan Police Department is responsible for handling approximately 27,000 – 32,000 calls every year. These calls range from parking and traffic to domestic violence calls and homicides. Most of these calls are handled by the patrol staff with support from investigations on major calls and code enforcement for ordinance violations. Patrol is made up of 20 certified and sworn law enforcement officers to include sergeants, corporals, and patrol officers. When fully staffed, the Fort Morgan Police Department has a staff of 32 sworn officers (including command staff and investigators) and 6 non-sworn full-time personnel, along with 2 part-time employees. This makes the PD, the largest department in the City of Fort Morgan. Officers are very hard to find and the applicants have dwindled over the past few years so we have never reached the full employment. If an officer comes to us already graduated from a police academy, they are certified, but not ready to work. They must complete a Field Training Officer program that lasts approximately 16 weeks before they are able to work on their own. Several of our officers have been hired as civilian employees and have attended the academy as an employee of the city. The academy lasts for 22 weeks, meaning that the average officer attends 1,520 hours of training before they are able to patrol on their own.

our INSPIRATION Most people in the police department enjoy working here because they have a servant’s heart. Having the ability to impact the lives of so many people that are dealing with some of the worst things that any of us could ever imagine is satisfying. Knowing that we can have a positive impact on those that are suffering from devastating circumstances and preventing others from going through such turmoil is the greatest gift our employees can give the public and we strive to do so daily.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING

The staff is amazing and always ready to lend a helping hand. I enjoy this pet store very much. This is a super cool local pet store. I have been here to buy supplies and food for my cat and I have found they carry good quality items and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Great little shop with stuff for reptiles, which was difficult to find out here. Friendly staff with great advice. 10/10 recommend.

PETS R PEOPLE TOO

From unconditional love to emotional support, pets are a vital part of their owners’ lives. In fact, in the United States, seven out of every ten households own a pet. Colorado is in the top 10 states for pet ownership, too. Although a specialized industry, it accounts for approximately 109 billion dollars in expenditures. If you have ever loved and cared for a companion animal, you certainly realize the value this niche business brings. Pets R People Too has been selected as this month’s Business of the Month recipient for its valuable contributions to our community and to the living creatures that share our homes. Each month this distinction is bestowed on a Fort Morgan business that excels in such areas as pride in their business, top-notch customer service, growth, active involvement in area organizations and programs, as well as community contributions that assist in creating a better quality of life.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING This mainstay niche business has been a part of Fort Morgan for more than 28 years. The business was established and originally located on Main Street where it now sports the El Jacel restaurant. In 1994, owners Gene & Cindy Wehrer purchased the shop and current building where it is now located at 835 E. Platte Ave.

complete with dog prints on the front of the building completed the remodel this past decade. New merchandise and expanded supply stock soon followed as well as several live animals, including snakes, turtles, geckos, iguanas, and other reptiles, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, parakeets, finches, fresh and salt-water fish, and even puppies once in a while. Being one of the few pet shops in Northeastern Colorado, they try to keep needed supplies for the needs of all types of pets.

“It’s been a great 28 years. We’ve met a lot of people that are more than just customers. They are people you look forward to seeing for their weekly visit. There are the phone calls you get with the excitement of their new pet and the people you silently cry with when they lose a pet. They are the people that have made the last 28 years fly by. We are very blessed to be part of such a great community.”
