The Dominican Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce the successful completion of the CT Precision Imaging Campaign in honor of Sister Julie Hyer, OP. The campaign facilitated the acquisition of two new CT (computerized tomography) scanners for Dominican Hospital. In partnership with Marianne Hyer and her family and friends, we held a dedication of the space blessed by fellow Adrian Dominican Sisters, Sister Rita Dean, OP, and Sister Adrienne Piennette, OP.
To make this vision a reality, $4.3 million in funding was secured through a $1.5 million investment from CommonSpirit Health and $2.8 million allocated funds from Dominican Hospital Foundation. Sister Julie served as the President of Dominican Hospital from 1985 to 2007, making her the tenth Adrian Dominican Sister to hold this position. Under her leadership, the hospital flourished, introducing a level III neonatal intensive care unit, a cardiac catheterization laboratory, and an open-heart surgery program. She also brought the community's first MRI to the hospital, purchased a former hospital to develop new programs, and guided Dominican's integration into Catholic Healthcare West. Notably, Sister Julie led the construction of Dominican Oaks retirement community, expanded the emergency department, and oversaw the Adrian Annex. Known for her sharp business acumen and quick wit, she made significant contributions to healthcare innovation and technology in Santa Cruz County.
At the heart of every thriving community is a hospital that doesn’t just respond to change — it leads it.
At Dignity Health Dominican Hospital, innovation means that patients and families in Santa Cruz can access life-changing care close to home. They no longer have to travel long distances for advanced treatment — it’s right here, delivered by compassionate caregivers who know and understand the needs of their community.
Thanks to cutting-edge technology and a commitment to continuous improvement, our caregivers are empowered to offer more precise, personalized care — with fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and better outcomes. And as innovation grows, so does our ability to attract exceptional physicians, nurses, and specialists who want to be part of something significant. Their expertise touches every life we serve.
One of Dominican's most recent advancements is the region's first Barostim™ implant, a

groundbreaking treatment for patients with advanced heart failure. The Barostim implant uses gentle electrical signals to stimulate the body's nervous system, improving heart function by reducing its workload and helping it beat more efficiently.
This pioneering therapy was introduced to the region thanks to the leadership and clinical expertise of Dr. Ryan Brandt, the Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Dominican Hospital. He played a crucial role in bringing the Barostim procedure to both the hospital and its patients.
Dr. Brandt carefully evaluates each patient's eligibility for the device and oversees long-term monitoring and follow-up care, providing continuous support throughout their treatment journey.
The procedure was performed by vascular surgeon Dr. Ruby Lo, who, along with Dominican's skilled teams, expressed her excitement. "It’s exciting to be part of an innovative approach that enhances heart function and improves overall well-being," said Dr. Lo, " Seeing patients regain their quality of life is what makes this advancement so meaningful.”
Another major step forward in heart care is HeartFlow Analysis, a revolutionary, noninvasive diagnostic tool for patients with suspected coronary artery disease. By combining CT imaging with artificial intelligence, HeartFlow creates a detailed 3D model of the heart, allowing physicians to see blood flow and blockages with remarkable clarity.
“This tool revolutionizes how we approach heart care,” said Dr. Charnjeet Sandhu, interventional cardiologist at Dominican. “It helps us make informed, confident decisions while reducing the need for invasive procedures.”
Dominican Hospital also made medical history by performing the world’s first procedure combining an artificial talus bone with a total ankle replacement on January 15, 2025. This breakthrough offers patients a
safer, more effective solution to complex ankle injuries using a high-performance, infection-resistant polymer called PEKK — rather than traditional metal implants. Led by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Nicholas Abidi, the success of this procedure highlights the extraordinary skill and innovation that define Dominican.
“I’m incredibly proud to be part of this historic moment in orthopedic medicine,” Dr. Abidi shared.
Behind every medical advancement is a team of dedicated professionals — physicians, nurses, technicians, and staff — working together to bring new treatments to life. It also takes a community of donors and supporters who believe in what’s possible.
At Dominican Hospital, every breakthrough is powered not just by science — but by generosity. In a nonprofit community hospital, innovation is more than progress. It’s a promise. A promise to heal, advance, and serve — right here, where it matters most. Progress doesn’t just happen in labs; it happens in life. And it starts with our generous donor community.
The Katz Cancer Resource Center team joined in the new Wig Boutique by Angie Ibarra and Jennifer Lipman, co-owners of Dwelling Interiors, and Dillon and Bridgette File of Farmhouse Woodworking.
The Katz Cancer Resource Center, located within the Mary and Richard Solari Cancer Center, provides compassionate support and resources to patients navigating the journey of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. With the dedicated assistance of our oncology-certified staff, we help empower patients to overcome various barriers they may face in accessing healthcare and community resources.
One particularly difficult side effect of chemotherapy is hair loss. This not only causes mental distress and vulnerability but can also evoke feelings of losing a part of one's identity.
To address this emotional and physical challenge, the Katz Cancer Resource Center encompasses the only wig boutique in the county that offers a variety of style options, including wigs, scarves, and hats provided free of charge. This space helps patients feel more like themselves during this difficult time.
This past year, the Katz Cancer Resource Center requested funding for a refresh of the Wig Boutique
from the Women of Wellness (WoW) Council, an annual giving society, supported by Dominican Hospital Foundation. An anonymous WoW member individually stepped up with a $20,000 gift to create a private and serene place where patients can comfortably try on various items in a non-clinical setting. With the generous collaboration and expertise of Dwelling Interiors, Farmhouse Woodworking, Omega Nu Santa Cruz, and construction by longtime supporter FTG Builders, Inc., the boutique underwent a remarkable transformation.
“Having experienced the profound effects of cancer within our own family, we at Farmhouse Woodworking felt a deep calling to be part of the wig room project. It was an honor to use our craftsmanship skills to support those going through the trials of cancer and cancer treatment. Our hope in contributing to this project is that it will help many people reclaim their sense of self and dignity during such a challenging time.”−Dillon & Bridgette File, Farmhouse Woodworking
The newly designed Wig Boutique features elegant vanity area and cabinetry, and inviting new furniture and flooring, all prepared to promote a sense of privacy and comfort. Through these enhancements, we aim to provide a supportive sanctuary for our patients as they embrace their changing bodies with dignity and grace.
“We sincerely appreciate our community's commitment to revitalizing this space for our patients. With the refresh of our private Wig Boutique, we can now meet one-on-one with each patient, providing personalized support during their vulnerable moments. This enhancement creates a comforting environment that encourages meaningful conversations, allowing us to understand how we can better support them and improve their overall care and well-being through cancer.”—Renee Aispuro Gonzalez, Manager, Cancer Care Center
Dominican Hospital's Bennett & Suzy Katz Cancer Resource Center was established in 2000 to assist patients in coping with the emotional and logistical challenges of cancer. Accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the center provides personalized care from diagnosis through survivorship. Each staff member at the Katz Cancer Resource Center is oncologycertified and collaborates with your physician. The services offered include education on prevention and wellness, nutrition counseling, psychosocial support, insurance navigation, appointment scheduling, referrals, and access to transportation grants. The center aims to help patients and their families manage the stress and side effects of treatment. Importantly, all cancer services and screenings are available to anyone in Santa Cruz County, regardless of financial status or insurance coverage.
Cancer is a journey that impacts not only the patient but everyone around them. In designing this space, our goal was to create more than just a beautiful environment — we wanted to design a sense of connection. It is important that clients feel comforted, supported, and surrounded by peace, while friends and family have a space to be present, engaged, and part of the healing process. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the amazing staff at the Katz Cancer Resource Center and the Dominican Hospital Foundation and our frequent creative partners, Farmhouse Woodworking.

The Dominican Hospital Foundation’s Employee Giving Program allows staff to directly contribute to the hospital’s mission, funding vital projects that improve the care and experience of patients, staff, and the wider community. This voluntary program empowers employees to give back, knowing their contributions make a real difference in advancing health education, wellness initiatives, and outreach efforts beyond the hospital walls.
Recently, the Employee Giving Program focused on raising funds for the Mobile Wellness Clinic, which brings essential healthcare services directly to various sites throughout Santa Cruz County. By expanding the clinic’s reach, the program not only provides critical medical care but also empowers patients to take charge of their health and well-being. The Mobile Wellness Clinic aims to reduce barriers in healthcare such as access, reduce emergency room visits, and prevent chronic conditions from escalating into more serious, costly health issues.
In previous years, the Employee Giving Program has supported various other initiatives, including Healing Courtyards, the Employee Gym, and the Wellness Center, all of which enhance the hospital environment for staff and patients alike. With every contribution, employees help to shape the future of healthcare in Santa Cruz County—together, making a lasting difference.
“
Employee Giving is a great illustration of how our staff makes a tangible impact on our community. Through initiatives like the Mobile Wellness Clinic, we’re able to deliver healthcare directly where it’s needed most.
”
—Erin O’Connor-Thygeson, FNP-C Manager, Mobile Wellness Clinic
The Women of Wellness (WoW) Council brings together women in Santa Cruz County with a strong mission: to improve women’s health services in our community, especially at Dominican Hospital. Each member contributes $1,000 annually, giving every donor an equal vote to shape the future of women-centered care.
The WoW Council has achieved a remarkable milestone with a thriving membership of 90 members, and it continues to expand. We host three main events for the WoW Council each year, focusing on education, proposal voting, and an annual social reception.
The Foundation invites a leading expert to present an essential women’s health topic at the education meeting, engaging the audience with insightful information and thoughtful discussions. This year, Dr. Sienna Titen, obstetrics and gynecologic surgeon, spoke on the complexities of endometriosis and invited four courageous patients to share their journeys. With an open and supportive dialogue, the WoW council members discussed early symptoms, treatment options, and navigating insurance.
“
As a mother of a daughter, I am always interested in understanding how we can improve the lives of women and their families through research, science, and education. WOW answers this need by supporting community based health services through an extraordinary group of women who are thoughtful and intentional about the projects we support.
”

With nearly half the year behind us, now is the time to start considering tax-savvy information. Donors like you are giving back to their favorite charitable organizations while saving on taxes at the same time.
Did you know that If you're 70½ or older, you can donate up to $108,000 directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like Dominican Hospital? This distribution counts towards your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and isn't taxed as income. You can reduce your taxable income while making a real difference in the health of our community! This year alone,
we’re grateful for donors who have used their IRA to support the following services at Dominican:
• Nationally recognized Cardiac Care Services
• Improving women’s health services through our Women of Wellness (WoW) Council
• Advancing patient care and outcomes with technology like the Da Vinci Xi Surgical Robot
• Wellness and rehabilitation classes for people of all ages and abilities at the Dignity Health Wellness Center
The funds must go directly from your IRA custodian to Dominican Hospital (Tax ID:94-1196203), or the charity of your choice. While using your IRA is a great way to give back, there are many other smart ways to give. You too can support our vital work, potentially lower your taxes, and simplify your giving. or rest haven’t improved your condition then it might be time to see an orthopedic surgeon. If you have severe or worsening symptoms, don’t wait—seeing an orthopedic specialist sooner can prevent further damage and improve your recovery. Your orthopedic surgeon will perform more advanced diagnostics and will recommend treatments.
Many people wonder when it might be time to consider a joint replacement, it might be time if you:
⊲ Find that non-surgical treatments no longer work, you’ve tried physical therapy, medications, injections or lifestyle changes, but the pain and stiffness persist.
⊲ Have difficulty moving the joint, especially in the morning or after sitting for long periods
⊲ Have pain that worsens at night or interferes with sleep.
⊲ Have trouble walking, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair or frequent falls..
⊲ Struggle with basic tasks like dressing, cooking, or driving.
⊲ Avoid activities you once enjoyed.
⊲ Feel depressed or frustrated due to constant pain.
⊲ Have significant joint damage seen on X-rays or MRI
⊲ Have severe arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis).
⊲ Have bone-on-bone contact due to cartilage wear.
⊲ Have joint deformities (bowed legs, knockknees, or hip misalignment).
While joint replacement can be performed at almost any age, younger patients might need a more durable joint due to the longer expected lifespan after surgery. Active individuals may opt for newer, more durable materials, while less active individuals may have different considerations for recovery and wear rates. While younger people may have a higher rate of revision operations, they will also prevent progressive degeneration of adjacent joints. The good news is that better prosthetics, long-lasting results, and minimally invasive procedures make joint replacement surgery a good option for people of all ages .Decisions about when to have replacement surgery are based on pain, disability, overall health, and long term goals, not your age.
If you are considering joint replacement surgery, you will want to know about the benefits, risks, recovery process, and longterm outcomes, as well as what to expect during the procedure, and how to prepare for it
Ensuring a successful joint replacement requires careful planning, adherence to medical advice, and a commitment to rehabilitation. Here’s how to optimize your new joint and recovery:
⊲ Choose the Right Surgeon Locally – Find an experienced orthopedic surgeon with good patient outcomes.
⊲ Luckily for Santa Cruz residents we have excellent world-class surgeons available to manage your symptoms. Visit: goldenstateortho.com
⊲ Optimize Your Health – Control conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.
⊲ Quit Smoking —Smokers have significantly higher rates of complications including blood clots, abnormal heartbeat, urinary tract infection and kidney failure.
⊲ Manage your weight –Implants are designed to bear normal weight, studies have found that surgery may be less effective and cause more complications when people weigh more.
⊲ Strengthen Muscles – Do prehab exercises to build strength around the joint.
⊲ Prepare Your Home – Remove tripping hazards, set up assistive devices, and plan for limited mobility, including the bathroom, and stairs.
⊲ Have a Strong Support Network –Identify a coach prior to surgery who can come to pre-operative and post-operative visits with you and assist in your recovery.
⊲ People who take a more active approach to their health are less likely to feel their outcome after surgery is out of their control. The more proactive you are about managing your overall health before hip or knee replacement surgery, the more likely you will have greater satisfaction, better pain relief and better mental health following surgery.
Local joint replacement surgeons offer robotic-assisted navigation with ligament balancing technology to improve long term functional outcomes.
After total knee replacement, instability (looseness or giving out) and stiffness are key drivers of patient dissatisfaction. To improve patient outcomes, navigated ligament-balancing techniques are a crucial step to ensuring that the new knee joint functions properly.
Qualified surgeons use a “tensioner device” inside the joint during surgery to establish the precise cuts needed. They use this and computerized navigation to detect minute
angles, ensuring that there is balanced ligament tension throughout the full range motion and a surgery optimized to the patient’s individual anatomy and demands.
Finding a surgeon who uses robotic-assisted technology, navigation, and ligament balancing techniques, will ensure you have better outcomes including restoration of natural knee movement throughout the full range of motion and prevention of instability or stiffness after surgery.
⊲ Follow Rehabilitation Protocols – Commit to physical therapy as prescribed.
⊲ Manage Pain Properly – Take medications as directed and use ice/ compression to reduce swelling.
⊲ Prevent Infections – Keep the surgical site clean and follow wound care instructions.
⊲ Stay Active, But Don’t Overdo It – Gradual movement is key; avoid excessive strain.
⊲ Maintain a Healthy Diet – Eat protein, calcium, and vitamin-rich foods to support healing.
Recovery Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint—Therapy is a series of small goals to ultimately allow you to achieve your recreational goals. Typically these goals may include things like learning to walk again without the assistance of a walker or a cane, progressively increasing your joint range of motion, and strengthening the muscles throughout your body.
⊲ By starting physical therapy early and following a prescribed program, patients can often recover faster and achieve better outcomes.
⊲ Continuing to follow a home exercise program after therapy is finished can help ensure the long-term success of the joint replacement and prevent future problems.
There are specifically designed classes offered at the Wellness Center such as Strength & Conditioning for Joint Pain.
ominican Hospital offers local surgeons with expertise in joint replacement in addition to sports medicine and trauma repair. They are closely aligned with Dominican’s Orthopedic Nurse Navigator, the therapy team and the nursing team in the OR and recovery units to ensure that you have excellent care provided with continuity and kindness throughout your journey.
Besides Hip and Knee replacement, our surgeons have advanced skills in Ankle and Shoulder repair and replacement. Dr. Nicholas Abidi has been performing Total Ankle replacements since 1996 and was one of the first surgeons to complete this surgery in California.
Techniques and materials have evolved greatly since then and Dr. Abidi has successfully performed the world’s first PEKK INBONE total ankle replacement matched total talus replacement with associated subtalar fusion, see pg. 9. Dr. Christian Heywood can perform advanced minimally invasive surgeries including hip arthroscopy. He performs joint replacement and preservation surgeries and is skilled in both shoulder replacement as well as reverse shoulder replacement which is an advanced technique for specific shoulder conditions.
Dominican is involved in continual quality monitoring and tracks patient outcomes to ensure excellence in care.

Thanks to the support of the Dominican Hospital Foundation, families giving birth at Dignity Health Dominican Hospital are offered free individual car seat fittings so that you can go home safely. Our certified car seat technicians will visit you to schedule a car seat check or to give you more information about car seat safety.
Car seats are checked by certified technicians who will:
• Inspect, educate, and help families install the car seat correctly prior to discharge.
• Ensure the car seat has not been recalled by the manufacturer.
• Demonstrate how to install and use the car seat.
• Instruct how to correctly place a child in the car seat.
Dominican is officially designated as a Baby-Friendly® hospital
