LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY Foundation Board of Directors 2023−24 Dear Community Members, For more than eight decades, Dominican Hospital has been committed to serving the healthcare needs of our local community here in Santa Cruz County. As we strive to enhance health outcomes, we urge you to support our mission and help us make a meaningful difference in the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community.

In the Fall of 2023, the Dominican Hospital Foundation launched the $2.145 million Wellness on Wheels Campaign, with the goal of expanding access to preventive healthcare services across Santa Cruz County. You can learn more about Dominican's Mobile Wellness Clinic on page 5. This expansion will enable us to provide even more comprehensive, high-quality care to those who need it most.

Dominican Hospital is thrilled to announce the arrival of its first eight Family Medicine Residents this summer, in partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine. With more than $2.5 million in grant funding, we have created a comprehensive residency program that will train culturally competent family physicians, increasing the number of primary care providers available in Santa Cruz County.

he Mobile Wellness Clinic of Dominican Hospital has a team of bilingual staff who are fluent in both English and Spanish. They are committed to providing high-quality healthcare services to patients with both episodic medical conditions and chronic needs. The staff will work with you to find a medical location that can provide ongoing care and support. They can also help you find social services and resources in the community that may aid you.

At Dominican Hospital, we strive to provide comprehensive care to our patients, and our bilingual staff ensures that language barriers do not prevent anyone from receiving the care they need.

Giving Back

Giving Back Begins with Our Employees Every year the Dominican Hospital Foundation Employee Giving Campaign educates Dominican employees about the importance of philanthropy and encourages them to give back. Through employee donations, big or small, we aim to support individuals who work toward promoting a healthy community. Each year, more than 30% of our employees give back, raising over $125,000. W

ith much gratitude, we held our annual Donor Appreciation Reception on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

We shared some exciting news about our $2.145M Wellness on Wheels Campaign. This campaign aims to acquire a new medical vehicle and expand health screenings, community education, and access throughout Santa Cruz County. We are building a brand new, all-electric mobile medical van and expanding our personnel to reach even more of the most vulnerable populations in our community. Help us reach our goal by spreading the word. We only have $350k left to raise!

Also during the reception, our Foundation President, Rodney Terra, Jr., shared a brief update on our Hospital and Foundation. Here at Dominican we look forward to welcoming eight new medical residents in our new family medicine residency program this July, as part of our More in Common Alliance in partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine.

Women of Wellness (WoW) Council Completes 6th Year of Funding

T

he WoW Council was formed in 2018 to provide education, input and financial resources for new and existing women’s health services at Dominican Hospital.

This year marks the sixth round of funding crucial programs and technology with more than $440,000 raised in support.

• $20,000 Katz Cancer Resource Center; As the only wig bank in Santa Cruz County, funds will be used for the renovation and beautification to create a Wig Boutique for patients affected by hair loss during cancer treatments. (Oncology)

WoW Funds in Action

On May 2, the WoW Council convened to view project proposals from various departments and programs of Dominican Hospital.

The WoW members voted in response for the allocation of the 2024 funds totaling $87,000.

In 2023, the WoW Council approved funding for the purchase of a Lucas Chest Compression System to support patients undergoing cardiac arrest. The Emergency Department received a total funding of $16,545 and has successfully integrated this technology into their practice.

Although both men and women are at risk of a cardiac episode, heart disease is the leading healthcare concern for women and causes 1 in 5 deaths each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2021.

Two additional projects were anonymously, fully funded by WoW Members!

• $5,000 Oncology Women’s Resources; Funds used to establish a resource area of products and educational brochures to remedy side effects due to cancer treatments.

Exercise Opportunities Available for You

M

any people find exercise is more enjoyable with a friend. Exercising with others can help keep you motivated while also providing a source of fun, stress relief, and a place to meet friends. A community-based program can provide the social connection and motivation you need to stick with exercise for the long run. Exercising in a group setting also provides an added layer of safety and supervision during activity. Dominican Hospital’s Community Education Program (known as PEP) at Dignity Health Wellness Center offers over 100 medically integrated fitness and wellness classes designed and taught by an experienced team of Rehab and Exercise professionals including Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapists and their support team.

PEP teaches classes in the beautiful Dignity Health Wellness Center in Live Oak and at the Simpkin’s Family Swim Center.

Classes are offered for all ages and ability Levels.

If you need to improve your mobility and flexibility?

As you age, it’s normal to become less flexible. Your range of motion decreases due to changes in connective tissue, decrease in water content, muscle mass changes, etc.

But you CAN maintain the ability to improve your flexibility and mobility as you age through a variety of stretching and mobility exercises. Improving your flexibility will help you with everyday activities like tying your shoes, shampooing your hair, or playing with your grandchildren. Many PEP classes can help you improve your mobility and flexibility by incorporating a range of stretching and mobility challenges in a variety of safe positions. The clinical PEP instructor will work on increasing your functional mobility and flexibility in a safe and fun group environment. n PEP Classes to Try: Build Better Movement, Chair Yoga, or Gentle Flow Yoga

Looking to improve your strength? As people age, they lose muscle mass and strength, a condition known as sarcopenia. Scientists say strength training is one of the best ways to help slow that decline. It not only maintains muscle strength and power (which you’ll need while opening a jar or pushing a heavy door), but it makes everyday activities like

cooking, cleaning and climbing stairs less difficult. It can also help reduce susceptibility to disease, improve brain health and mood and help you maintain independence longer. Many PEP classes incorporate strengthening exercises into each class. n PEP Classes to Try: Strength & Agility, Challenge Better Movement, or Pilates

Has your balance been a concern? Just like strength and flexibility, your balance can also improve at any age. There are many changes that occur in our sensory systems as we age, including decreased vision, a decline in our vestibular system, and a decrease in our proprioception. However, with balance-specific exercises and practice, you can improve your balance and decrease your risk for falls, even as you age. Many of the PEP classes incorporate balance-specific exercises that challenge each of the sensory systems with an emphasis on safety and fun! There are a variety of different PEP balance classes to help support each individual’s needs based on their function. n PEP Classes to Try: Balance Basics, Balance Circuit, Balance Plus, or Tai Chi classes

Have you had a recent surgery, or are considering having a joint replacement, or are you living with chronic joint pain? Our bodies are all unique and the options for moving without pain vary. IMPROVED HEART HEALTH A diet with more fruits and vegetables has been shown to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. The Lifestyle Heart Trial found that 82 percent of patients diagnosed with heart disease who implemented a plant-based eating plan had some level of atherosclerosis regression (decrease of the build up of plaques on the walls of the arteries). Eating plants can improve other risk factors for heart disease by lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol, and improving your blood sugar control.

LOWER RISK OF DIABETES According to a recent study, going plant-based can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. Diets high in fiber-rich plant foods can help to improve insulin sensitivity and decrease insulin resistance.

YOU’LL SAVE MONEY It is estimated that following a plant-based diet can save an average of $14.36 a week per person or a yearly savings of $750. Learning to cook with plants benefits your body and your bank account.

Understanding, Preventing, and Caring for Swelling (Edema) in Your Legs

Why do we end up with swollen legs?

Our bodies have 2 systems for moving fluid. The first one involves your blood vessels, all your veins and arteries transporting oxygen and nutrients to and from your heart and lungs. The second one is your lymphatic system, which transports protein rich fluid throughout your body, cleans up dead cells and helps fight infection.

For both blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, your active muscles help pump fluid out of your limbs to your heart, and then to your kidneys, where your body gets rid of excess water and waste.

Many of us have experienced swollen feet or ankles.

Some common causes include a long day on our feet, air travel, pregnancy, or injury. This type of swelling can happen at any age, and regardless of your overall health. It usually gets better quickly when the cause is addressed.

Swelling that doesn’t get better quickly can be a sign of a health problem that needs attention, such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), heart failure, kidney failure, chronic infection, cancer or cancer treatment, or lymphedema (a kind of swelling caused by protein-rich lymph fluid collecting in your limb). When this type of swelling is ignored it can be double trouble! If the original cause is left untreated, then swelling itself can create more health complications.

Why don’t I want to ignore my swollen legs?

The first reason is to make sure new and/or persistent swelling is not caused by an underlying condition. For example: cancer, heart failure, and kidney failure are easier to treat if you find out about them early on and start caring for them before they cause other problems. Chronic infections, when left untreated, can cause sepsis, a lifethreatening illness.

The second reason is to prevent complications that arise from the swelling itself. These complications can be as simple as skin color change (reddish staining of your shins and calves) and thickened skin “plaques.”.Or they can be more serious—weeping and blisters that lead to painful sores, fungal infections, or legs so heavy it makes it hard to move around and care for yourself. Lymphedema that goes untreated can cause elephantiasis—thickened skin that loses its elasticity, is at risk for infection, and can be disfiguring.

PREVENTION • Stay active! Continuing to use your muscles regularly, helps pump fluid out of your limbs.

• Walking, riding a bike, swimming/pool exercise, are all great exercises for keeping fluid moving. But staying active doesn’t have to be an official workout- it includes daily life activities like gardening, walking your dog, taking a short stroll with a friend, really any excuse to move your muscles.

• If you have a job that keeps you on your feet all day, talk to your doctor about wearing compression socks. This supports your blood vessels and makes your muscle activity more efficient at pumping fluid.

It can also help prevent varicose veins.

• Put your feet up. Don’t sleep in your recliner or with your feet down. Let gravity help your body move fluid.

• Watch your wounds! If you cut or scrape yourself, keep an eye on the healing process and check with your doctor if you are concerned.

What can I do if I am experiencing swelling?

There are some things that are safe and helpful for any swelling condition. Whether you are waiting for an appointment with your doctor to talk about swelling, or as part of your established swelling care routine, these strategies will help prevent wounds, infections, and worsening of your edema:

SKIN CARE. • Wash and dry your swollen limbs every day, use gentle soap and warm water, and pat your skin dry. Be sure to wash and dry between your fingers or toes!

Don’t wash any open wounds.

• Moisturize! Use an unscented lotion to moisturize your swollen limbs. Do not put lotion between your toes or fingers, or on any open wounds.

ELEVATE YOUR SWOLLEN LIMBS. • Put your legs up periodically throughout the day. Avoid spending the night in a recliner or a chair. If you have swelling in your arm, prop it up on some pillows whenever you are sitting down or resting

EXERCISE ROUTINE FOR SWOLLEN LEGS. Do this quick routine whenever you think about it: • Shoulder rolls forward and backward, 5 x each • Diaphragmatic breathing/belly breathing, 5 x each • Ankle pumps 20 x, both legs (point toes like a ballet dancer, then bring your toes back toward your shins)

When should I talk to my doctor about my swelling?

• Your swelling is new and persistent, it keeps coming back day after day

RESOURCES Outpatient lymphedema clinic: • Ask your doctor for a referral to help manage your swelling, especially if you have not been successful with using compression stockings…there are other options.

• In addition to swelling, you are gaining weight and you don’t know why you are experiencing shortness of breath

Lifestyle Management:

• You have weeping skin, blisters, or wounds on your legs that just don’t want to heal (even little ones!)

It may be due to health problems, worries about falling, or issues with body weight or pain. Dominican’s team of Cardiac Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Dieticians and Life Coaches can help you improve your health safely and with confidence.

Dominican Hospital’s nationally certified Cardiac Risk Reduction is designed to assist individuals who have had angina, heart attack, angioplasty, stent, bypass surgery, valve surgery or heart failure. The program includes monitored exercise, education classes, risk factor assessment, behavior modification guidance and support to get you back to enjoying those things that are most meaningful to you.

SUPERVISED EXERCISE THERAPY FOR PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (SETPAD) Dominican Hospital’s SETPAD program is designed for individuals living with symptomatic peripheral artery disease including discomfort or cramping in the legs. This program includes supervised exercise therapy, education classes, risk factor and behavior modification counseling.

Boxing for Balance and Your Bones

Gentle group exercises designed to improve mobility and strength in a safe pain-free manner for people who may have neck and back discomfort or limitations. Exercises are fun and safe and any precautions by your MD need to be given to instructor.

Class includes education on safe use of your body during everyday activities, relaxation training and other helpful tips. Participants must be able to walk 100 ft. independently with or without an assistive device & be able to get on and off the floor. 4 sessions

AQUATICS REQUIREMENTS All pool participants must be able to move through the water unsupported or have a caregiver who can provide one-on-one assistance.

This includes using the lift to enter/exit the pool, dress safely before/after the pool.

Join us to learn great insights into newborn behavior and development including: sleep-wake cycles, newborn reflexes, coos and cries, how to soothe a fussy baby and how to identify a baby who is sick and needs medical attention. We will touch on breastfeeding skills as well as important safety considerations for cribs, car seats.

Join us for the Express Childbirth class.

You will learn about the stages of labor, when to go to the hospital, pain medication options, medical interventions, cesarean birth, postpartum recovery, and newborn procedures. There is also a focus on training your partner to be the best support they can be. We will explore the concept of optimal fetal positioning prior to labor onset, and we will actively practice positions of labor and birth, please be dressed for movement. Some babies have issues with long bottle feedings, trouble gaining weight, coughing/choking, fussing during feeds or refusing the bottle altogether. Do you have any plans to go back to work during your baby’s first year? This bottle feeding clinic can help you (it is most effective before baby is 8−12 weeks). 3 sessions

An experienced Developmental Therapist, can help your baby, who is 6 months and older, work on motor skills to get crawling.

If your baby has found their hands and feet, rolls onto their tummy, and is ready to engage with the world around them, they're ready for this class. If your baby seems interested, but has not quite figured out how to transition into and out of sitting, they’ll love working on it with other babies and parents in this crawling class! 3 sessions

Starting solid food is an exciting time which involves your baby developing oral-motor skills for chewing and swallowing, and also tiny finger skills for feeding themselves!

This is a play-based class for babies 0-6 months old with activities to get your baby moving towards their developmental milestones. • Ensure the car seat has not been recalled by the manufacturer.

• Demonstrate how to install and use the car seat.

Lifestyle Management LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS Cardiac Risk Reduction Program (Cardiac Rehabilitation) IN-PERSON Lowering risk factors such as high cholesterol, weight, high blood pressure and stress has been shown to significantly reduce future cardiac problems. Designed for individuals who have had angina, heart attack, cardiac procedure (angioplasty, atherectomy, stent), bypass surgery, valve surgery or congestive heart failure. This nationally certified program encompasses monitored exercise therapy, education classes, risk factor assessment, and behavior modification guidance.

The Dominican Cardiac Risk Reduction Program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Diabetes Management (Type 1 & 2) VIRTUAL-LIVE The Diabetes Management Program provides information and support to help create a personal, successful path to diabetes management. The program includes education classes and individual appointments provided by our team of health care professionals including certified diabetes educators, registered nurses, and registered dietitians.

The Dominican Diabetes Management Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

Heart Connections: A Heart Health Support Group VIRTUAL-LIVE A monthly peer support group for individuals and their families making lifestyle changes that support heart health, offered in a safe place to share ideas and find solutions. The group is coordinated by Dominican Hospital’s Cardiovascular Services and Center for Lifestyle Management and is open to the community. All meetings are currently held via Zoom.
