Incoming Foundation Board Members HILARY BRYANT Hilary Bryant is the Donor Services Director for the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County. She co-founded Buoy Labs in 2015, a tech startup acquired in 2019 that optimizes water use. She was a Santa Cruz City Council member from 2010-2014, serving as Mayor in 2013. Hilary and her husband, David Shuman, own Westside Animal Hospital in Downtown Santa Cruz.

Hilary is co-chair of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation Board, chair of the Local Stewardship Council for the Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve, and on the Cruz Foam Advisory Board. In addition, she is a member of the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary and the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce Emeritus Board.

A UC Santa Cruz graduate, Hilary serves on the Fiat Lux Alliance for the Office of the UC President, earned her BA in Biology, was an All-American water polo player, and enjoys biking, running, surfing, and trying to keep up with her two kids.

ALEXI SEVASTOPOULOS Alexi was born and raised in Silicon Valley and moved to Santa Cruz three years ago with his wife and two kids.

In 2006, he graduated from Cal Poly with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and began his career as an engineer at Linear Technology. After several years in tech, he co-founded what would become a prominent enterprise networking & security consulting company named Armature Systems that services the Fortune 500. Five years ago he and three others set out to build Santa Clara University's flagship venture accelerator and went on to raise a venture capital fund dedicated to

supporting the best and brightest entrepreneurs in the SCU ecosystem (Santa Clara Ventures). After moving to Santa Cruz, he then built Santa Cruz Ventures dedicated to investing in the top early stage tech startups born out of the Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties - the first and only venture firm to do so. He is currently an investing partner at both Santa Cruz Ventures and Santa Clara Ventures and sits on various boards today.

MARGIE SISK Margie Whiting Sisk is the youngest of eight Whiting Family siblings, and was born at Sister’s Hospital on West Cliff Drive and all three of her daughters were born at Dominican, continuing the legacy. Her family has been a part of Santa Cruz for over 120 years, and, like her siblings, attended Holy Cross School and Harbor High. After graduating from San Jose State, she returned to Santa Cruz to join the family business, Whiting’s Foods on the Boardwalk. At Whiting’s Margie’s role focuses on the people side where she’s had the privilege of hiring and training thousands of local high school and college students, continuing the family legacy of offering a meaningful first-time employment experience. Margie has always valued giving back to her community, and is currently involved with Dominican’s Women of Wellness and is ready to give her time and attention to the Foundation as well. Health, wellbeing, excellent medical services, loyalty and trust are all important to her and she feels these values align well with the mission of WoW and the Foundation. Margie is also involved at a Board level with Holy Cross School and the Your Future is our Business effort, connecting high school students to career paths. Her highest priorities are her family and faith … with her health following closely behind. When not working, you can find Margie traveling with her husband Jon of 36 years, drinking champagne with our three adult daughters, playing with our three grand babies, planning the next party, finding adventure with my friends, almost daily hot yoga classes, and being as active as possible in nature.

he Dominican Hospital Foundation’s annual gala on October 26 at the iconic Cocoanut Grove brought together over 180 attendees, including donors, community members, employees, and partner organizations. This unforgettable evening featured a strolling dinner, live auction, Fund-the-Need segment, and lively entertainment, creating a festive atmosphere that highlighted the community’s generosity.

Thanks to the incredible support of our attendees, the evening raised more than $147,592 in total. This includes $14,100 from the live auction, $114,892 from the Fund-the-Need segment, $17,550 from event registrations, and $1,050 from the raffle. These funds will directly benefit the Fragile Beginnings Initiative, which enhances services for our Level III

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), providing crucial support for vulnerable newborns, their families, and the dedicated NICU staff. The initiative also supports our caregivers and Stanford-affiliated neonatologists, ensuring that those on the front lines of care have the resources they need to deliver exceptional support to our community’s most fragile patients.

Caring for Our Smallest Miracles: Dominican Hospital’s NICU

F

or over 24 years, Dominican Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has cared for nearly 8,000 of our smallest and most vulnerable patients.

Thanks to the community’s generosity, we have invested in technology and resources to advance neonatal care. With nearly 800 babies born each year, about 25 percent need specialized care. For around 200 critically ill newborns, our Level III NICU becomes their “first home,” providing both lifesaving care—and also comfort to families.

Dominican Hospital’s NICU is the only Level III facility in Santa Cruz County. It is equipped with 14 beds, two isolation rooms, and a team of experts, including neonatologists from Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. This dedicated team cares for premature infants, some born as early as 26 weeks, and babies with severe conditions such as respiratory distress, infections, or congenital disabilities.

While some newborns stay for just a day, others require several months of care.

In addition to medical treatment, the NICU provides comprehensive support for the families. This includes assistance with breathing, feeding, lactation education, and nutrition. Social workers and speech therapists help as part of the holistic care approach. Families also have access to the Dr. Joseph T. Anzalone Family Newborn Care Courtyard, boarding rooms, support, family room, support groups, and gift cards for essentials. The donor-supported NICU transport team is available 24/7 to transfer and stabilize infants across the region.

One story of hope comes from Jennifer Kelly, mother of newborn patient Nico.

“We couldn’t be more grateful for our daughter Nico’s care in the Dominican NICU. She seemed healthy at birth, but soon after, a nurse noticed her breathing was irregular and her oxygen levels were dangerously low. She was rushed to the NICU, where they immediately provided oxygen and antibiotics and ran tests to understand why she couldn’t breathe on her own.

Dr. Magdy Ismail and the NICU team brought in a pediatric cardiologist from Stanford, and our daughter was diagnosed with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension. The team acted swiftly, intubating her and treating her lungs while carefully monitoring her condition. Dr. Ismail kept us informed every step of the way, answering every question with compassion and honesty.

The NICU nurses were incredible. They cared for Nico around the clock and supported our family, answering all our questions and ensuring Nico was comfortable. We trusted them completely. When we brought our three-yearold daughter to meet her baby sister, the staff made her feel welcome and included.

Bringing Nico home was a true gift. The NICU team became like an extended family to us, and they will always be part of our daughter’s birth story—a story of care, expertise, and compassion.”

Fragile Beginnings Of the nearly 800 babies born at Dominican Hospital each year, about 25 percent will need Neonatal care—that’s 175–200 babies. The Dominican Hospital Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is more than a clinical unit in a hospital; it’s a first “home” to newborns and a home away from home for parents.

Dominican Hospital Foundation’s Women of Wellness (WoW) Council, chaired by Anissa Novak, celebrates six years of funding. More than $440,000 has been raised in support of women’s health programs and technology.

A special thank you to the WoW Council for their generosity in supporting the purchase of two new Hamilton C1 portable ventilators. These devices are equipped to provide both invasiveand, more importantly, noninvasive ventilation for both adult and pediatric patients. Supporting our patients experiencing respiratory failure and distress by way of noninvasive ventilation (by face mask) improves patient care by avoiding placement of a breathing tube, thereby lowering risk of pneumonia and other hazards associated with the procedure. With this device, we are better equipped to manage smaller pediatric patients experiencing respiratory distress from pneumonia and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) within our emergency department.

Inspired by the legacy of Dominican Hospital’s allfemale founders, the WoW Council honors a long tradition of compassion, courage, and friendship. Our members are women who believe in the power of giving back and who share a commitment to building a more comprehensive Women’s Health program at Dominican Hospital. This vision guides our efforts to address vital needs across a range of services, from cancer and cardiac care to gynecology, maternal health, and labor and delivery.

Becoming a member of WoW is more than just a financial pledge; it’s an opportunity to be part of something truly impactful. We ask each member to commit to an annual contribution of $1,000, a gift that goes directly to fund essential services that women in our community rely on. Members meet two to three

times a year to learn about the hospital’s women’s health services, discuss emerging needs, and identify the most meaningful opportunities for support. Annually, WoW members vote to allocate funds toward critical programs and technologies that enhance patient care.

Our impact speaks volumes. Since its founding, more than $450,000 has been invested in over 24 programs and projects. In 2024 alone, WoW allocated $116,000 to initiatives including noninvasive respiratory ventilation, advanced therapy equipment for occupational therapy, NICU nutrition support, fetal monitoring carts for labor and delivery, and specialized resources for women in oncology.

Tips for Living with Diabetes

million people in the US have diabetes, which is 11.6% of the population!

iabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body can't produce or use Insulin properly, resulting in high blood sugar. If you have high levels of glucose in your blood regularly it can lead to health problems including heart disease, vision loss and kidney disease.

Fortunately, lifestyle changes are the best way to prevent or delay and manage diabetes. Simple changes to one's lifestyle can prevent or delay comlicationthat can affect your heart, kidney, eyes and other parts of your body.

The following are general guidelines, and everyone should be sure to check in with their healthcare team about specifics for diabetic management plans.

Steps to Lower Your Risk or Manage Your Diabetes

DIABETES

1. EAT HEALTHY

3. MANAGE YOUR MEDICATION

⊲ Prepare meals that include whole grains or slowly digested starches, lean protein and lots of vegetables.

⊲ Know what medications you take to manage your diabetes as well as any side effects they may have.

Try the Plate Method: Fill half your plate with brightly colored vegetables, ¼ plate grain or starch and ¼ plate lean protein. ⊲ Try not to overeat, aim to eat until you are 90% full. ⊲ Limit sweets, beverages that have added sugar and fruit juice. Try drinking water (you can add lemon, orange slices or mint, sparkling sugar-free water or unsweetened iced tea. ⊲ Learn more about how to control your carbohydrate intake. This is important for everyone living with diabetes but especially those managing their diabetes with insulin or certain diabetes medications. Make an appointment with one of the dietitians in our Diabetes Management Program to get a personal plan and learn more.

4. MANAGE YOUR STRESS ⊲ Try stress management techniques like meditation, listening to music, or deep breathing. ⊲ Get outside and/or do activities you enjoy like gardening, walking, etc. ⊲ Try gratitude journaling. ⊲ Take a stress management class. PEP has several to choose from. See the back half of this magazine for information on PEP classes.

5. GET ENOUGH SLEEP

⊲ Explore the website diabetesfoodhub.org for recipe ideas.

⊲ It’s hard to choose foods wisely when you are tired and underslept (see 10 Tips to Sleep Well on pg 24)

⊲ Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

⊲ Work with your doctor to make sure you are up to date on tests/screenings.

⊲ If you are just starting out, start slow and work up gradually.

⊲ An easy way to remember what to check for diabetes are the ABCs: A1C levels, Blood pressure, and Cholesterol, which are important factors to monitor and control to decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke.

⊲ Aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, like walking, biking, dancing or swimming most days of the week. Do something you enjoy! ⊲ Include resistance training 2-3 times per week. ⊲ Avoiding sitting for long periods of time. Stand every 30 minutes during the day. ⊲ Check out the classes offered in the PEP Catalog, pg. 36. ⊲ If you are at risk of low blood sugar, make sure to check your blood sugar before exercise, have a snack if needed, and always carry glucose tablets or a snack in case you need it. ⊲ Stay well hydrated.

⊲ Get your eyes checked yearly and visit the dentist twice a year. ⊲ Take good care of your feet, check them daily. Use a mirror to see the bottom of your feet if needed. Let your doctor know if there are any open areas, signs of infection.

10 TIPS to SLEEP WELL

ABCs OF DIABETES A A1C • A1C is a blood test that measures average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months.

The target for most people is an A1C below 7%. A1C levels should be tested at least twice a year.

1. Keep a regular sleep schedule.

Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, give or take 20 minutes, including weekends.

2. Create a relaxing bedtime routine.

Take a warm bath, read a book, listen to relaxing music, or meditate.

Focus on relaxing activities for about an hour before bed 3. Keep your room quiet, dark, and cool—ideally 65°F. 4. Dim the lights after dark.

Bright light from lamps and blue light from your laptop or cell phone may interfere with the release of a hormone, melatonin, that tells our body that it’s time to wind down.

5. Unplug an hour before bed.

• Games, videos, work emails, and social media all keep your mind active — keeping you awake way later than you want to be.

• Sleep with your phone out of reach, or at least on “Do Not Disturb.”

B Blood pressure • For most people with diabetes, the goal is to keep blood pressure below 130/80 mm Hg. High blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Check at each visit.

C Cholesterol • Total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides should be monitored. LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, can build up and clog blood vessels, which can lead to heart attack or stroke.

• Instead of using your phone as an alarm, consider an old-fashioned alarm clock.

6. Avoid caffeine late in the day.

Avoid drinks and foods that contain caffeine — coffee, non-herbal tea, colas, even chocolate — at least 6 hours prior to bedtime.

7. Avoid foods that can disrupt sleep.

Citrus fruits, spicy food, fatty or fried food, and heavy meals are all tough on the digestive system. It’s hard to sleep when your stomach is digesting, which can take a few hours.

8. Limit alcohol intake.

Alcohol may make you feel drowsy, but can interfere with the quality of your sleep. Alcohol alters the natural stages of sleep, such as deep sleep, REM sleep, and light sleep and can lead to lighter, more restless sleep, decreasing sleep quality, so you’re more likely to wake up feeling tired.

9. Get regular exercise.

It may take some time, but regular exercise may help you sleep.

Try exercising early in the day, or at least 3 hours before bedtime.

Exercise helps your body produce the hormones that keep your brain alert. Which doesn’t help when you are trying to fall asleep.

10. Don’t use your bed like a couch.

Make sure to get in bed when you are ready to sleep.

What is the difference between Prediabetes and Diabetes?

Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Without lifestyle changes,people with prediabetes are at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is incredibly common. In the US 1 in 3 adults have been diagnosed with prediabetes.

You can lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by: • Using the tips listed within this article.

• Also, by losing just 7% of your body weight has been shown to make a significant difference in lowering your risk.

WHAT IS HPV

Raising Awareness for Cervical Cancer

C

ervical cancer, a disease affecting the lower part of the uterus, is a serious threat to women’s health. While preventable and treatable in its early stages, it remains a significant concern globally. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 13,820 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in 2024 and approximately 4,360 women will die from the disease.

The primary cause of cervical cancer is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. Most HPV infections clear on their own, but some strains can lead to cervical cancer over time. Suppressed immune system, high number of childbirths, cigarette smoking, prolonged use of oral contraceptives, and high number of sexual partners can increase the risk for contracting HPV.

Thankfully, we have effective screening and prevention tools for cervical cancer, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment options. Regular Pap tests, which screen for precancerous cells, are essential for identifying and treating the disease before it progresses.

Pap smears are recommended every 3 years for women ages 21–29, and every 3–5 years for women 30-65—with a HPV test every 5 years. It is important to speak to your primary care physician or gynecologist about the appropriate option for you. The HPV vaccine, available for both boys and girls, offers protection against the most common cancer-causing HPV strains.The American Cancer Society recommends vaccination between the ages of 9–12. It is effective in protecting against the types of HPV strains that cause 90% of cervical cancers, as well as several other cancers.

By understanding the risks, taking preventative measures, and seeking regular checkups, women can empower themselves and their daughters and protect their health. She also received training and certification in wellness coaching as well as adult and pediatric weight management. She is an integral part of the hospital’s bariatric program.

She is responsible for educating patients who are planning to do sleeve gastrectomy on what to eat and how to change their lifestyle for a successful outcome.

Additionally, she counsels patients who have prediabetes,IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), liver disease, hyperlipidemia, obesity and other chronic conditions.

This fast-paced class will focus on circuit training with emphasis on core strengthening and stretching. Participants will get their heart rate up and then follow up with circuit training using a variety of equipment, ending with 20 minutes of stretching. All participants must be able to walk 500 feet without an assistive device and be independent getting down to and up from the floor. 11−13sessions

Come take care of your joints, hips, knees, shoulders, and more with proper exercise to maintain your range of motion and strength!

No matter what your plan, exercise, joint replacement, etc. this class can help give you the proper mechanics and help you maintain or regain your mobility in a painfree manner. Pre-surgery strengthening has shown improved post-surgical outcomes.

The GYROKINESIS ® Method is a modality with elements of Tai Chi, yoga, swimming, and dance. This modality addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. The method coordinates movement, breath and mental focus. Class starts on a chair then moves to floor exercises on a yoga mat, followed by standing work for balance. The class improves flexibility and joint mobility, balance inside and out, and a sense of well-being. No experience is required. 4 sessions

This advanced beginner/intermediate class is intended for those who feel comfortable with the first six moves of the Tai Chi for Health form. Continuing into the the next six moves of the form the expectation is that we will have varying levels of skill and knowledge among the participants. The actual form of instruction will be loosely divided by participant comfort.

Some parts of the class, warm ups, Qi Gong, Tai Chi walking, concentration practice and review of Forms 1−6 should be familiar to all. We will practice together in a supportive, pressure free and enjoyable environment.

AQUATICS REQUIREMENTS All pool participants must be able to move through the water unsupported or have a caregiver who can provide one-on-one assistance. This includes

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction techniques can help you better cope with life’s stressors. This class will teach you to be more comfortable with the changes of pregnancy, the intensity of birth and to help you to become a more present parent. You and your partner will learn skills to help you manage the pain of labor and birth, explore your emotions around birth, connect more deeply with yourself and your partner, and to improve your stress management skills in preparation for parenting. It also covers anatomy and physiology of labor and birth, pharmacological pain options, potential medical interventions, cesarean birth and what to expect in the early postpartum period, including breastfeeding basics.

Join us for the Express Childbirth class. You will learn about the stages of labor, when to go to the hospital, pain medication options, medical interventions, cesarean birth, postpartum recovery, and newborn procedures. There is also a focus on training your partner to be the best support they can be. We will explore the concept of optimal fetal positioning prior to labor onset, and we will actively practice positions of labor and birth. Please be dressed for movement. Lifestyle Management LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS Cardiac Risk Reduction Program (Cardiac Rehabilitation) IN-PERSON Lowering risk factors such as high cholesterol, weight, high blood pressure and stress has been shown to significantly reduce future cardiac problems. Designed for individuals who have had angina, heart attack, cardiac procedure (angioplasty, atherectomy, stent), bypass surgery, valve surgery or congestive heart failure. This nationally certified program encompasses monitored exercise therapy, education classes, risk factor assessment, and behavior modification guidance.

The Dominican Cardiac Risk Reduction Program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

IN-PERSON This support group is conducted by trained facilitators and is a safe place for caregivers (family and friends) of persons with dementia to: • develop a support system • exchange practical information • talk through issues and ways of coping • share feelings, needs and concerns Fee: no charge to participate

A monthly peer support group for individuals and their families making lifestyle changes that support heart health, offered in a safe place to share ideas and find solutions. The group is coordinated by Dominican Hospital’s Cardiovascular Services and Center for Lifestyle Management and is open to the community. All meetings are currently held via Zoom.
