Dear Community Members,
Hello and thank you for welcoming me as the new Dominican Hospital Foundation President. You may know me as the general manager of the Dream Inn and I take great pride in our location just across the street from the beginning roots of Dominican Hospital — the Sisters Hospital on West Cliff Drive established in 1941. I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor, Rodney Terra. Jr., who has made incredible strides in the last few years in advancing healthcare at Dominican.
Now 84 years later, Dominican Hospital continues to be dedicated to addressing the diverse healthcare needs of our local community here in Santa Cruz County. As the philanthropic entity of the Hospital, we raise muchneeded funds from our community to fulfill needs such as technology, programmatic support, or most recently a new Mobile Wellness Clinic. Just in this last fiscal year, the Foundation successfully raised more than $4.2 million in partnership with over 800 community members, grantors, and local businesses. These funds are then transferred to the Hospital, based on donor intent, impacting thousands of lives each year.
In this issue of Focus on Wellness, we are excited to share the latest updates on the Foundation’s support, alongside educational opportunities and insightful information centered on health and wellness. We encourage you to explore the pages of this magazine to discover how our community actively supports the health and well-being of individuals across Santa Cruz County.
I invite you to join the Dominican Hospital Foundation’s efforts in supporting the crucial healthcare needs of our community, as we continue to provide care to all.

Join us in welcoming Diana Cruz as our new Manager of Philanthropy, driving major gifts and strategic campaign efforts that cultivate powerful, transformative partnerships with our community and physicians. We also welcome Joanna Misunas as our new Executive Coordinator who is crucial to the coordination of our Foundation Board, office, gift-entry, and database management

ALLISON NIDAY, past-president of the Foundation Board 2021-23 and board member since 2012. Allison supported the Foundation through many of the most recent campaigns and committees such as the Healing Courtyards Initiative, Comprehensive Cardiac Operating Suite, Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Systems. PAMELA SANTACROCE, board member from 2016-2025. As a longtime supporter of Dominican Hospital, Pam has seen firsthand the many changes of the Hospital as we know it today. Through the years, she and her late husband Nello have supported and
facilitated growth in all areas and aspects of healthcare, most notably with the beautiful and serene Pam and Nello Santacroce Meditation Courtyard. As a retired nurse, Pam understands the importance of supporting our employees. She continues to give back in their honor across each initiative such as our Katz Cancer Resource Center, Mobile Wellness Clinic, and Sister Julie Hyer Imaging Center.
MAGDY ISMAIL, MD, board member from 20162025, is a champion of Dominican Hospital's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Dr. Ismail has partnered alongside the Foundation over the years in fundraising efforts to bring the most current and lifesaving pediatric technology here to Santa Cruz County.

The Dominican Hospital Foundation held a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 7, 2025 to celebrate the funding and procurement of a new, all-electric mobile medical van. This upgrade was made possible through $2.8 million in community donations, and will significantly enhance our Mobile Wellness Clinic program,
enabling access to care in non-traditional settings across Santa Cruz County. This new van provides patients with an improved experience for episodic health issues and preventive services, all at no cost. Services are provided by a bilingual (Spanish and English) multidisciplinary team of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinic coordinators.

In addition to the all-electric vehicle upgrade, the new van includes:
⊲ Two patient exam rooms
⊲ Patient registration and waiting area
⊲ Lab draw area with a medical refrigerator and freezer for lab specimens
⊲ Medically-fit HVAC system
⊲ ADA-compliant restroom and wheelchair lift
⊲ Exterior awning and custom vehicle wrap for community awareness
Dominican's Mobile Wellness Clinic team sees approximately 1,000 patients a year, the majority of whom are uninsured or underinsured. This

program aims to help reduce a patient's barriers by connecting resources to health care, including cost, proximity to facilities, transportation, insurance, housing, food insecurity, language, and education.
The community fundraising campaign, “Wellness on Wheels,” received an early $1 million charitable gift to kick off the effort and build momentum. Within 2023-24, the campaign raised over $2.8 million.
“We are proud to partner with our local donors, sponsors, and grantors to fund this crucial program to benefit the community,” said Anthony Pagliaro, Chief Philanthropy Officer of the Dominican Hospital Foundation. “This new Mobile Wellness Clinic will enable healthcare to reach a broader population, providing vital care to those in need.”

The Dominican Hospital Foundation recently hosted its annual Donor Appreciation Reception, a heartfelt gathering dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of Dominican Hospital's benefactors and community partners. Held at Chaminade Resort, this stewardship event celebrated the profound impact of philanthropic support on Dominican Hospital's ability to deliver cutting-edge programs and life-saving technologies to patients and families in the Santa Cruz community.
The annual Donor Appreciation Reception is a cornerstone of the Dominican Hospital Foundation, underscoring a fundamental truth: without the extraordinary generosity of its donors, many of the advanced medical services, compassionate care initiatives, and innovative technologies that define Dominican Hospital would not be possible.
This year's event held particular significance marking the Foundation's early reflections on Dominican's monumental 85th anniversary in 2026. A poignant tribute was paid to the founders whose vision and tireless dedication laid the groundwork for the hospital we know today.
Guests enjoyed a beautiful reception on the Chaminade's main patio, fostering an atmosphere of gratitude and community. A unique and

deeply moving “History Room,” adjacent to the outdoor reception, became a focal point of the evening. This specially curated space featured a compelling video showcasing four Adrian Dominican Sisters who had profoundly impacted Dominican Hospital over the years. The video captured them together, reminiscing over archival photographs from the hospital's early days, sharing stories of their journey to Santa Cruz, and recalling the founding of Sisters Hospital in 1941 – the institution that would ultimately evolve into today's cherished Dominican Hospital.
The History Room also displayed a timeline detailing the Adrian Dominican Sisters' legacy in Santa Cruz. This timeline highlighted incredible fundraising achievements over the decades, including the establishment of the Comprehensive Cardiac Operating Suite, the Sister Julie Hyer, OP Imaging Center, and the invaluable Mobile Wellness Clinic – all testaments to a visionary commitment to community health bolstered by philanthropic support. Tables featured a comprehensive collection of historical photographs, tracing the hospital's leadership from its earliest days under the Sisters' guidance as Presidents/CEOs, through to Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz assuming the role in 2006.
Over the last eight decades, 94 sisters from the Adrian Dominican Order have worked at Dominican Hospital. Pictured above: Mary Ellen Leciejewski, OP, Adrienne Piennette, OP, and Rita Eileen Dean, OP.

Many employees, who donate through the Employee Giving Program, also joined the reception. Pictured are Joanie Vigil and Gloria Ortiz.

The Dominican Hospital Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to all donors, whose continued support ensures Dominican Hospital may continue to provide exceptional care for generations to come.
To honor our legacy, the Dominican Hospital Foundation met with four Adrian Dominican Sisters to create “The Sisters of Service, Tribute to 84 Years”. Their stories underscored how the Adrian Dominican Sisters' vision of faithbased healing shaped what is now Dominican Hospital and continues to impact healthcare here in Santa Cruz County. coming together to create a healthier, brighter future for all. Special thanks to Karissa Paxton Events and Hollie Jackson Culinary Catering.
The Women of Wellness (WoW) Council operates as a philanthropic group of the Dominican Hospital Foundation. Each member contributes a minimum of $1,000 annually which collectively empowers the WoW Council to fund vital initiatives. Each fiscal year, the Foundation actively recruits funding proposals from hospital departments and initiatives for presentation to the WoW Council, who then vote to allocate funds each late spring. This ensures that members have has a voice in directing their philanthropic gifts while providing much-needed funds in support of women's health at Dominican. In addition to the voting process and the annual social, the WoW Council gathers for their educational meeting, typically in late January, focusing on relevant women's health topics.

Do your legs ever feel tired, achy, or cramp up when you're out and about? Does it happen when you are enjoying a walk, grocery shopping, or just moving around your home? Does that discomfort then magically fade when you sit down to rest?
It’s easy to dismiss these “stop-and-go” leg pains as just normal tiredness. But what if your body is trying to send you an important message? When these feelings become a regular part of your routine, it might be a sign of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
Think of your arteries as the vital pathways carrying fresh, oxygen-rich blood to your leg muscles. With PAD, these pathways can become narrowed by a sticky buildup, making it harder for your muscles to get that essential fuel, especially when you're on the move.
While PAD affects many adults, particularly those over 50, here's the powerful truth: PAD is treatable and knowing about it early can make all the difference! With the right support and care, you can reduce pain, increase your walking distance, and rediscover the joy of an active, fulfilling life, right here in our vibrant community.
Your body often gives clues. Beyond leg pain that eases with rest (known as claudication), watch for:
⊲ Less hair or shinier skin on your legs
⊲ Thicker toenails
⊲ Legs or feet that feel colder than usual
⊲ Foot or leg sores that are slow to heal
Talk to Your Doctor. If these symptoms sound familiar, your doctor is your best partner in health. They'll listen to your experiences, check your pulses, and may perform simple, painless tests like an AnkleBrachial Index (ABI) – a quick blood pressure comparison between your ankle and arm or an ultrasound to check blood flow. Always remember: leg pain isn't automatically 'just aging.' Giving it attention is a powerful step towards your well-being. And if PAD is diagnosed, don't hesitate to ask your doctor if our SETPAD program is right for you and for a referral!
Did you know certain factors can increase your likelihood of PAD? These include: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, a family history of heart issues, and importantly, smoking. Discuss these with your doctor too!
Once your doctor diagnoses PAD and provides a referral, our Supervised Exercise Therapy for PAD (SETPAD) program at The Center for Lifestyle Management is here to guide you!
Think of it as specialized “physical therapy” designed to boost your circulation and empower your steps! It’s a dynamic blend of exercise, education, and encouraging support, custom-made for you.
Your Personalized Plan: We start with a simple walking test to understand your unique abilities. From there, we build a customized plan just for you, designed to safely push your limits and expand your walking distance.
⊲ Expert Guidance, Safe Progress: Our clinical exercise physiologists and nurses are by your side. They monitor your comfort, blood pressure, and heart rate, ensuring every session is safe, effective, and tailored to your well-being.
⊲ The Proven Walk–Rest–Walk Method: You'll walk on a treadmill until you feel moderate discomfort, rest until it fades, then walk again. This proven technique, expertly guided by our team, actively helps your body build new “detours” for blood flow, making movement easier and less painful over time.
⊲ Celebrating Your Growth: We track your progress with objective tests, showing you exactly how much stronger you've become. Seeing your improvement is incredibly motivating!
⊲ Empowering Knowledge: You'll learn essential foot care, how to manage risk factors like blood pressure, and build healthy habits for lasting wellness.
⊲ Accessible Support: For Medicare patients, up to 36 sessions over 12 weeks is typically covered, making this proven treatment within reach.
Research shows SETPAD participants can walk up to three times farther! Most feel better within weeks, regaining confidence and independence in daily life.
Even before seeing your doctor, you can start nurturing healthier habits. These small actions today can lead to big differences tomorrow:
⊲ Take “Micro-Walks”: Try short walks of 5-10 minutes, resting whenever needed, then walk again. Listen to your body!
⊲ Embrace a Smoke-Free Life: If you smoke, quitting is the single best gift you can give your circulation and overall health. Every attempt counts, and we're here to support you!
⊲ Daily Foot Checks: Make it a habit to check your feet for any changes, cuts, or sores.
⊲ Choose Comfort: Wear supportive, comfortable shoes that protect your feet throughout the day.
⊲ Nourish Your Body: Partner with your doctor to manage blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar – these are key ingredients for healthy arteries.
⊲ Imagine Your Future: Picture yourself enjoying life to the fullest – a leisurely stroll on the beach, keeping up with your loved ones, or enjoying the daily activities that bring you joy, without the interruption of leg pain. This future is possible for you!
1 . Talk to your doctor about any leg pain or symptoms and discuss your PAD risk factors.
2. Ask for a referral to our SETPAD program at The Center for Lifestyle Management.
3. Once we receive your referral, our caring team will connect with you to warmly welcome you and start your journey!

Your spine is the backbone of your well-being, literally and figuratively. It is a stack of 33 vertebrae connected and cushioned by cartilage and connective tissue and linked by multiple joints, that, like other joints in the body, can experience inflammation, degradation, and pain.
Incidence:
Each year, 1 in 5 Americans suffer with pain in their neck, low back or other parts of their back. As we get older, the risk of back pain increases. It’s the second most common reason to see a doctor and is the sixth most costly condition in the United States.
Effect:
Back and neck pain can have a significant impact on quality of life. The pain may cause someone to avoid activity, become sedentary and even have trouble doing their job. Severe spine pain may even require a trip to the emergency room and need surgery to correct. Longterm pain can cause depression.
⊲ Exercise Regularly: Regular exercise strengthens the muscles that support the spine, helps manage weight and improves coordination and flexibility.
⊲ Stretch Regularly: Stretching exercises, such as hamstring stretches, quadriceps stretches, and back extensions, help improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension.
⊲ Maintain Good Posture: Pay attention to your posture throughout the day. Avoid slouching or sitting for long periods, or using your phone or computer with your head tilted forward.
⊲ Use Proper Lifting Techniques: The act of bending to lift a heavy load places a large strain on the spine. Get help, keep your back straight, bend your knees, keep the heavy object close to you and use the power of your legs to complete the lift. Avoid twisting or reaching while lifting.
⊲ Keep Moving: Remaining in any one position for an extended time is hard on the spine. If you must sit for long periods at work, use an ergonomic chair and desk, take frequent breaks to walk and stretch.
⊲ Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight puts additional stress on the spine.
⊲ Eat a Balanced Diet: Avoid inflammatory foods such as dairy, red meats, refined sugar, and other processed foods. Opt instead for plant based foods that are also naturally low in calories Eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D: which can build and maintain strong bones.
⊲ Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help to keep the discs in your spine hydrated and elastic.
⊲ Avoid Smoking: Smoking can restrict blood flow to the spine, increasing inflammation and pain sensitivity.
⊲ Get Regular Checkups: Early detection and treatment can help prevent more serious issues. If you have a family history of bone issues or scoliosis, regular scans are crucial. A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan measures bone density and can help diagnose osteoporosis which can cause spinal pain and collapse.
If you have questions about how to improve your diet, PEP has classes taught by dietitians, see page 34:

Most typically, back and neck aches result from muscle strain, weakness, and lack of conditioning due to inactivity, or from the opposite extreme, over-use or overexertion. Persistent back pain lasting more than two weeks warrants a visit to your doctor. Your Primary Care
Doctor will make the decision about what treatment is necessary. They will check for weakness, numbness, tingling, or any other indicators of nerve involvement and may refer you to an orthopedic specialist or neurosurgeon for further examination, or to a physiatrist, which is a doctor specializing in pain management.
While regular exercise, good nutrition and movement habits can help prevent the development of back and neck issues, if you have sustained a neck or back injury, or if you regularly feel some degree of pain and discomfort after certain activities, you will require more targeted exercises that are usually prescribed by a physical therapist.
A physical therapist will first focus on relaxing the affected area and quickly reducing discomfort caused by injury or overuse. They will then look for contributing factors, such as posture or inefficient movement patterns, and gradually introduce flexibility and strengthening exercises as tolerated. It is important to keep up the re-learned good habits and there are many classes that can help support this through PEP, at the Wellness Center—including a Healthy Spine Class which is taught by a physical therapist with specialized advanced orthopedic training and focuses on moving safely while minimizing back pain and preventing further injury.
If your symptoms persist even after diligently following your exercise plan, you may require further evaluation. Even with today’s technology, the exact cause of back and neck pain can be hard to find due to the complexity of the spine. Your doctor may perform X-rays as well as an MRI. The MRI shows soft tissue such as ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels and can help spot infection, tumor, inflammation, or pressure on your nerves. Sometimes a blood test may help diagnose a certain type of arthritis, which can cause back and neck pain.
See a healthcare provider immediately if you experience: Sudden or severe pain after an injury, like an auto accident, numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs, difficulty urinating or loss of bowel or bladder control, a high fever, unintentional weight loss.

Dr. Ciara Harraher is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at Stanford Health Care. She is a clinical professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and leads the Stanford Neurosurgery Outreach Clinic in Santa Cruz. Dr. Harraher is also the Chief of Neurosurgery at Dominican Hospital and her practice encompasses all aspects of general neurosurgery. She primarily diagnoses and treats brain tumors, degenerative spine conditions, pinched nerves, and trauma to the brain and spine. She delivers personalized, compassionate care to each of her patients.
Physiatrists can help patients with various types of back pain, including spinal stenosis, disc herniation, sciatica, and muscle strains. Their comprehensive approach focuses on restoring function, improving mobility, and reducing pain to enhance patients’ quality of life. A physiatrist will educate you about your condition and treatment options. They will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your diagnosis and they collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and physical therapists. A physiatrist may:
⊲ Prescribe pain management medications, such as nonopioids, muscle relaxants, or injections.
⊲ Recommend physical therapy exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and posture.
⊲ Provide guidance on ergonomic techniques and lifestyle modifications to prevent future pain.
⊲ Consider interventional procedures, such as nerve blocks or epidural steroid injections, if necessary.
Back surgery may be necessary when conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, pain relievers, and injections, do not provide adequate relief for persistent or severe back pain. Other factors that may indicate the need for surgery include:
⊲ Severe pain: Unbearable pain that radiates down the leg or interferes with daily activities.
⊲ Numbness or weakness: Loss of sensation or muscle weakness in the arms or legs.
⊲ Loss of bowel or bladder control: This can be a sign of a serious spinal cord injury.
⊲ Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that presses on the nerves.
⊲ Herniated or ruptured discs: When the soft, jelly-like center of a disc pushes out and presses on the nerves.
⊲ Spinal fractures: Breaks in the bones of the spine.
⊲ Instability: When the spine is not properly aligned and may move abnormally.
It is important to note that back surgery is a major decision and should be discussed thoroughly with a qualified healthcare professional. They will consider all the factors involved and determine if surgery is the best option.
