WOODVALE TREE SERVICES IS A LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED COMPANY RUN BY ADAM AND DANIELLE JARVIS.

H

i Danielle and Adam. Woodvale Tree Services celebrated a decade in business last year. An amazing accomplishment. Tell us a bit about yourself and your family? I have been in the professional Arboriculture industry for 26 years. I started in the tree industry when I left school at 16 in my hometown in England. I went on to work for some of the largest and most innovative tree companies in the UK, gaining valuable experience, knowledge and the correct Arboriculture qualifications which have helped me to be where I am today. I was lucky enough to meet my wife and business partner Danielle some years later in the early 2000s whilst Danielle was travelling the UK, and the decision was made to move to Danielle’s hometown of Port Macquarie in 2005. We are very fortunate to have 3 beautiful children, we have two boys Jenson aged 6 and Joseph aged 9, Lola is our youngest she is 4. Family time together is without doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding thing for us both, we regularly enjoy camping, travelling, motorbike riding and generally spending as much time together as we can. We have a close network of friends who we appreciate and enjoy spending time with. 116 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

How has the business grown in 10 years? In 2010 we purchased a local tree company that I had been working with for 5 years; it was a well-known locally respected business with a good base of local clients and a handful of Government contracts. My vision was to bring the tree industry forward in a regional town like Port to what I had been accustomed to in the UK, where standards of tree care and personal safety are paramount. With our high standards and business ideas now set in place, it was time to put Woodvale Tree Services to work. We successfully acquired new Government contracts whilst managing to still satisfy our local domestic client base in Port and the surrounding areas. As the profile and the business grew so did our work loads; we went from 3 guys and a small chipper and truck to having 2 full time crews, and we acquired large scale woodchippers and stump grinders, as well as excavators and skid steers. It is only in the last 12-18 months we have reduced the workload on ourselves and slightly downsized the structure of the business; by doing this we both feel the positive benefits from having more family time and less stress, which is ultimately providing a better life for our family. In 2015 I decided to step away from the physical side of Arboriculture to concentrate on Arborist report writing, site assessments/quoting, and scoping the government work which was taking me

as far as New England and from Newcastle to Coffs. Although this was a fundamental period for Woodvale Tree Services my physical and mental health was being affected heavily, I had gained 20kg in a few years and was not feeling present with my family out of work hours. 2020 was another monumental year for us personally, as we discovered new paths outside of work for our wellbeing, which is so important to our family and personal health. It is an honour to have such a beautiful family, an amazing best friend and wife in Danielle and a great network of support and staff surrounding us. As we look forward to another 10 years and more of business, we could not be happier to be in beautiful Port Macquarie bringing up or loving children and enjoying our time together. What is the history behind the name Woodvale? It was all part of the original plan to provide Port Macquarie with a professional “Corporate” business, again moving away from the “Tree lopper” label I had seen so much of around. Finding a name for a professional tree company can be easy if you use the location in your title, however I did try to stay away from that, but Woodvale came from the road we brought our first house on. I pulled up on my driveway just before we brought the business and it just came out my mouth, Woodvale Tree Services.


What services are on offer and what areas do you cover? Our services range from Arborist reports, tree risk assessments, pruning trees, removing dead dangerous branches, selective pruning, approved tree removals, advanced climbing, through to dangerous tree removals, stump grinding and emergency tree work, and our work locations take us all over the Mid North Coast from our location in Port Macquarie. There are many years of combined experience within the company. What is it that makes Woodvale unique? You can look on any social media app or in any local advertisement papers and you will see plenty of “Tree companies” offering pretty much the same services as each other. The difference with Woodvale is in the quality, professionalism, experience, the importance of safety, and qualifications and above all our passion for the industry and trees in general. As safety standards and regulations are continually changing, we upgrade our machinery every 5 years to provide a safer working environment for our staff. Having a beautiful tree on your property whether it is an ornamental Magnolia or a

30-metre-tall Eucalyptus grandis is an asset both aesthetically and to your property and should be cared for with the highest regard, and I believe this is where Woodvale provide a service that others cannot. The first interaction that any client gets with Woodvale is with me, I am a Level 5 Arborist with international and Australian qualifications, so the recommendations and advice regarding Local Council regulations and Australian Standards for tree pruning I regularly give during my site visits can be priceless, and our quotes, are free. Our staff are all qualified in Arboriculture at different levels ranging from the team leaders who hold AQF5 through to staff who have completed AQF3. This is the importance of having qualified experienced mature staff who can undertake all the jobs in hand once allocated to them and providing all our clients with the highest of standards in tree care. Take us through a typical day on the job. A typical day for myself these days is a mix of self-care and business. This starts with a visit to the gym to kick start my day, then I usually meet with the staff and we have a quick chat about the day (all our operations

are run on a job management system, so it is basically scrolling through each job on the teams iPads and talking about access or residents’ requests or site specifications, as I have visited each site prior). I always find time for a coffee in the mornings and a quiet spot for my morning mindful meditation, after this it is all go for me as I will have many appointments scheduled for each day; these range from domestic quotes to government site assessments and scoping of works. This can be locally around the Port Macquarie LGA or a few hours north, south or west. Whilst all the while our honest, reliable crews are working on jobs I have allocated them. I will often meet Danielle for lunch; we find this a great time to switch off for a while and spend time together before we both head back to the office. As well as running the admin side of our business Danielle still finds time daily for the school run. The crews return at 3:30pm, ready to do it all again the next day. And as they say... Choose a job you love, and you will never work another day.
