Otis Carey

Few figures so gracefully bridge the worlds of sport, art, culture, and healing like Otis Carey. A proud Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung man, Otis has carved a deeply personal and powerful path as a professional surfer, visual artist, and passionate advocate for Aboriginal identity and mental health awareness. Based on the beautiful Coffs Coast, he’s not only a recognisable figure on the waves but also a leading voice in blending culture and creativity through storytelling, symbolism, and soul. We had the pleasure of si ing down with Otis to learn more about his journey, his evolving relationship with the ocean, and what drives his passion for healing, storytelling, and family.

Images by Sam Corlette

how the ocean first became such a big part of your life?

Hi Otis. You are an artist, former pro surfer, father, and proud Gumbaynggirr man, what has been your focus recently?

My father was always a waterman. He had me and my siblings in the ocean and rivers from a very young age, so my love for water started early. For us Gumbaynggirr mob, the ocean, Gaagal, is more than just water. It’s one of our shared totems and deeply spiritual. From birth, and I’d say even before birth, I’ve had that strong connection. The ocean has shaped who I am, it’s where I go to think, to feel, to just be.

How has your relationship with surfing evolved over the years, especially as you’ve stepped more deeply into your art and cultural work?

My focus is always my family, they always come first. Everything else comes second. The kids are on school holidays at the moment, so it’s been a bit tricky juggling work and looking after them, but honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love every minute of being a father. They keep me grounded and give me purpose beyond everything else.

You’ve travelled the world for surfing, but can you tell us a bit about your early days growing up around Coffs and

Continued over... beyond

Massively. Since I started painting in 2014, my connection to the ocean has deepened in ways I didn’t expect. Before then, I didn’t really understand why I loved surfing, I just knew that I did. Painting opened a new spiritual path that helped me realise how much surfing connects me to my identity, culture, and healing. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the ocean and the role it plays in my life.

What first drew you to painting as a form of expression?

To be honest, I was dealing with severe depression. My therapist at the time mentioned how I was really creative when I explained things and suggested I try painting as a way to work through some of what I was feeling. It just flowed naturally. Painting became this therapeutic outlet that not only saved my life but also led to opportunities I never imagined, working with major brands, exhibiting around the world. I’ll always be grateful for what painting has given me.

Much of your work incorporates

Gumbaynggirr symbols and language. How do you approach blending traditional elements with contemporary art?

struggled for years with severe depression. I know how it feels to be in that place, and

I know

how hard it is to talk about it, especially as a man, and especially as a First Nations man.

I always approach it with deep respect. I take traditional symbols and amplify or exaggerate them, but never in a way that takes away from their meaning. It’s about preserving the integrity while giving it a modern feel. I think of it as bridging the old with the new, honouring our old people

and their messages, while inviting younger generations and broader audiences to connect with those same stories in today’s world.

Do you feel your creative work helps open conversations about Aboriginal culture and identity in spaces where they’ve often been excluded?

Definitely. Art is a beautiful, nonconfrontational way for people to start learning. It invites curiosity without judgment. Through art, people can ask questions, reflect on meaning, and start to understand culture and identity in ways they might not in other

spaces. I’ve had so many conversations begin just because someone asked about a painting, and it turns into something so much deeper. Art moves us emotionally, and that’s where real change starts.

You’ve spoken about the importance of healing and mental health, especially for First Nations men. Why is that message important for you to share?

Because I’ve been through it. I struggled for years with severe depression. I know how it feels to be in that place, and I know how hard it is to talk about it, especially as a man, especially as a First Nations man. There’s still so much stigma around mental health. It’s heartbreaking how many people suffer in silence. I’ve lost too many mates to suicide, and I don’t want others to feel like that’s their only option.

That’s why I speak up, because if even one person hears me and feels less alone, it’s worth

it. I always say, I’d rather talk with someone all night than go to their funeral. We have to keep showing up for each other.

You’ve recently been named the official Ambassador for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. What does this role mean to you?

It’s a huge honour. Being this year’s Ambassador is really special, especially as a dad of three. This year’s celebrations will be held at Kulai Preschool, where I went, and now where my kids go too. It’s a full-circle moment. Children’s Day is about celebrating the strength and culture of our kids. It’s about reminding them they are valued, seen, and supported. I’m so proud to be part of that message.

Are there any current or upcoming projects or collaborations we should keep an eye out for?

Yes! My wife and I are launching a project together called Gnaarlu, which means “water”

in Gumbaynggirr language. We’re creating throw rugs featuring my artwork. It’s more than just a product, it’s a way of sharing culture and creating something beautiful that also gives back. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to Kulai Preschool, which has meant so much to our family. I’m really excited to see it come to life.

What would you say to young Indigenous kids, here on the Coffs Coast or anywhere, who look up to you?

Be proud of who you are. Your culture is your strength. Don’t ever feel like you have to change to fit into a box. Whether it’s surfing, painting, or something totally different, do what makes your spirit feel alive. You have stories in your blood that go back thousands of years, and that makes you powerful beyond measure, and never be afraid to ask for help. Healing isn’t weakness, it’s strength.

Thanks Otis

Sagar Nic a

Hi Nicola. You wear a lot of hats, business owner, mentor, and active community member, what drives you at your core?

It all comes down to love for what I do. I don’t waste time on negativity or fluff, I’m straightforward in business and thrive on positivity. When I get an idea, I’m all about putting it into motion straight away and getting things done. I’m also proud to be part of a small but passionate team at the Sawtell Chamber. We work hard together to make our town even better. Over the past few years, we’ve brought to life our very own community Christmas tree, created a huge Halloween event, Summer Session street parties, and of course, continued our much-loved annual New Year’s Day fireworks…….and how can I forget the Chilli Festival…how good was it this year?

Tell us a bit about your background. How did you get started in business, and would your younger self believe what you’re doing now?

With nearly three decades in business and a deep love for her hometown of Sawtell, Nicola Sagar is a true force, driven, creative, and always evolving. Whether she’s leading community events, running her beloved spa Figtree, or dreaming up her next venture, Nicola brings heart, hustle, and a no-fluff approach to everything she does.

heart,

At 24, my younger self took a huge leap and opened my first business, Serenity Blue, which later became Ella Baché. I had a whole lot of drive and absolutely zero experience in running a business. But back in 1998, things were simpler. There was no internet, no social media, barely even mobile phones (omg I sound so old!). You could walk out of work at the end of the day and actually switch off.

Fast forward 29 years, and life moves at lightning speed. These days, small business owners are expected to be switched on 24/7. Even when you go away, the stress tends to come with you. To survive in business now, you need to be adaptable and willing to make sacrifices, but that passion and drive I had at 24; that’s still going strong.

Even when you go away, the stress tends to come with you. To survive in business now, you need to be adaptable and willing to make sacrifices, but that passion and drive I had at 24 - that’s still going strong.

Life is full of ups and downs, especially when building a business. Closing our doors and standing down our team members during the COVID lockdown in 2020 was by far the most challenging thing I’ve had to face so far. For our team at Figtree and Girlfit, not knowing if we would ever reopen our doors again was devastating. Figtree was closed for 12 weeks and Girlfit never opened again.

Can you share a little about the projects you have going on at the moment and what you’re enjoying about them?

Figtree turns 11 this year, so we’re working on a little rebrand and refreshing the treatment rooms to create an even more relaxing, floating, feel-good vibe. It’s all about continuing to evolve while staying true to what our

clients love, making space for calm, connection, and care.

During the COVID lockdowns, I started making candles as a creative outlet, and from that, KYJA Candles was born. I’d love to see KYJA grow and eventually expand into other retail businesses. It’s another way to share the Figtree message: the importance of taking time for self-love and nurturing yourself.

We’re constantly working on refining the spa experience, updating our offerings and finding ways to deliver an even more beautiful, meaningful service. I love that no two days are the same, and every project is rooted in helping people feel good.

How do you stay grounded with so many moving parts in your life? Is there a personal ritual or mindset that keeps you steady?

Teaching Yin Yoga twice a week really helps me slow down and quietens my mind. It’s a practice

that grounds me, and often gives me exactly what I need, even if I didn’t realise I needed it.

Most mornings start with a walk along Sawtell Beach with a couple of close friends I’ve shared a connection with for over 20 years. That time together, paired with the feeling of the ocean air on my skin, is my daily reset.

Then of course, there’s coffee. My husband Dale, also a small business owner, is my biggest supporter. We always try to have a coffee together before I open the laptop and the day really begins. That moment of calm and connection sets the tone for everything that follows.

You’re clearly passionate and capable, but what’s something you still find hard or are working on in your businesses?

Time, like most small business owners, I never seem to have enough of it. Juggling three businesses, being active in the Chamber, and making time for family is a constant balancing act. It’s something I’m always working on. Taking proper holidays has become really important, not just to rest, but to reconnect with myself, with my husband, and with the bigger picture of why I do what I do. Creating space to pause is just as vital as the hustle.

What does "success" mean to you today, and has that definition changed over time?

To me, success feels like the seasons, they come and go. One day can feel incredible, like everything’s flowing, and the next can bring challenges you didn’t see coming. I’ve definitely had my fair share of ups and downs over the years, but I always find a way to pull myself through.

We always try to have a morning coffee together before I open the laptop and the day really begins. That moment

of calm and connection sets the tone for everything that follows.

At 53, I feel grateful for the businesses I’ve built and the experiences that have come with them. Girlfit was a huge success, not just in a business sense, but in the way it brought so many women together. Lifelong friendships were formed there, and that means everything to me. Yes, my definition of success has definitely evolved. These days, I see it more as a collection of meaningful accomplishments over time, not just in business, but in the connections made, the resilience shown, and the joy shared along the way.

Any new plans on the horizon? What goals or aspirations do you have for the future?

Next year marks 30 years as a beauty therapist and 28 years as a business owner, which feels like a huge milestone, and definitely something worth celebrating. I still absolutely love what I do across all areas of my work, but if I had to name one goal moving forward, it would be to find more balance. As much as I thrive on creating and growing, I’m learning that space to slow down and breathe is just as important. So the future, for me, is about continuing to do what I love, but with a little more room to enjoy it.

SHANE CLOUTEN

Hi Shane, you’re a born and bred local, what was it like growing up in Coffs Harbour and what’s kept you here all these years?

Coffs was a great place to grow up, heading to the beach everyday to get in as much surf time as possible. Everything seemed so close to home. We didn’t have mobile phones so to catch up with mates you would ride to each

house on your bike until you eventually found a house with a stack of bikes outside the front yard. We all knew everyone in every house, and it always felt like home.

In my late teens I travelled around Australia for a few years but eventually returned home with my wife Karina and our two beautiful boys so we could be surrounded by our family and friends again. It was important for us that our boys were given the same advantages and opportunities that we were granted growing

Shane Clouten is a born and bred Coffs Harbour local whose deep ties to the community span business, sport, and family life. In this interview, Shane shares how resilience, connection, and a love for his hometown have shaped both his personal journey and the success of his business Coffs Mobile Welding.

up in Coffs.

Tell us a bit about how Coffs Mobile Welding started, was it always something you planned to do, or did it grow naturally over time?

Starting the business wasn’t something I had always been planning. On our return to Coffs my boys and I lost their Mum Karina after a 10 year battle with breast cancer. At that point surviving on a single minimum wage income was not an option.

Simone who has helped implement the business structure and how it runs day to day, to great admin support, Lux booking and my apprentice Jack Carroll.

You’ve put a lot of time and energy into the Coffs Comets over the years. What does the club mean to you personally and what motivated you as a busy business owner to commit time to this club?

I decided that our only way forward was for me to sell everything I owned and create my own opportunities by opening my own business. After selling everything I bought my first truck and a generator and got to work, welding.

My biggest lesson to date has been ge ing a team behind me and not trying to get everything done myself. When I talk about the team I mean everyone from my wife Simone, who has helped implement the business structure and how it runs day to day, to great admin support, Lux booking, and, my apprentice Jack Carroll.

What do you love most about the handson nature of your work?

I have always loved the work I am doing.

Being in the truck has given us such a diverse group of clients from tiny residential jobs, building sites, concrete plants, vehicle modifications or simply fixing a crack on a lawn mower. Being able to take a pile of steel and create something individual for the client is a great feeling.

Being a local business owner in a regional town comes with its own challenges and rewards. What’s been the biggest lesson so far?

My biggest lesson to date has been getting a team behind me and not trying to get everything done myself. When I talk about the team, I mean everyone from my wife

I started playing for the Comets in the under 7’s back in 1984,and I have made lifelong friends and enjoy encouraging younger players to step up and chase their best. The community within the club was a huge support for myself and my boys, Brock and Nate, after losing their Mum and the club rallied around us with ongoing support and love. Being part of the Comets community always felt like home and it made me proud to experience watching my boys play and grow within the same club as me.

What’s your proudest moment, on or off the field, with the Comets?

The proudest moment was getting the chance to play with my eldest boy Brock whilst having my youngest Nate as ball boy.

You still sponsor the junior Comets but have pulled away from rugby a bit in recent years. What are you currently enjoying in your time outside of running your business?

Hanging with my wife Simone and learning how to play lawn bowls with the team at Park Beach Bowls Club. Taking up a new sport has given me a new lease in life. Competing again has helped in every area of my life. The drive to learn a new sport that involves being part of a team again is something I am grateful for.

What are some of your goals and aspirations, or things you’re looking forward to, for the next few years ahead? Looking forward to building the business, the addition of a smaller version of what we have now that will provide us the chance to spread out and cover more jobs.

Thanks Shane.

MILLIE k

Not even through primary school yet, Millie Cook is already a powerhouse of talent, tearing up the basketball court, smashing PBs in the pool, and lighting up the stage in dance eisteddfods across the state. With a recent sports scholarship and big dreams for the future, this Coffs Coast all-rounder is only just ge ing started!

Millie, you’re incredible! You play basketball, swim at state level, and dance too. Let’s start with basketball, you’ve had an amazing year, being selected by Basketball NSW among other things. Can you tell us about some of your proudest basketball moments?

I started playing basketball through Coffs Harbour Basketball Aussie Hoops program and have done regular camps and training ever since. I play for the Narwhals in our domestic competition and in 2023 and 2024 I got selected to play in the BASKETBALL NSW Jamboree. I also got selected to play in the Katie-Rae Ebzery challenge earlier this year which was awesome! In 2023, our Suns U/12s girls team won the State Cup and in 2024 our U/12s team were the champions for North-

Eastern Junior League and I was awarded the MVP of the grand final.

Being selected for TAP for BNSW was an exciting moment for me, with all my training and hard work paying off. I can’t wait to train with the other girls (25 from country/ 25 from metro) in Penrith with experienced coaches in August and push myself even further.

What do you love most about playing for the Coffs Suns?

Coffs Harbour Suns are an amazing basketball club and I am proud to represent them. I spent many years cheering my Mum and Dad and their friends on from the sidelines and being able to wear a Suns singlet and be part of the club now is very special to me. My teammates make the seasons fun along with all the coaches too. I love the support the other Suns teams give each other, whether it’s scrimmaging in training or cheering hard on the baseline during games!

Swimming is a very different kind of sport

with lots of early mornings! What keeps you motivated to keep training hard in the pool?

I am actually an early morning person, so that definitely helps! I have always enjoyed swimming and have lots of great friends there too. My coaches at North Coast Swim Academy, Daniel and Dean, always encourage me to get better and to push myself. I do look forward to my breakfast after morning training as it’s hard work! My favourite strokes are butterfly and freestyle and I like the longer distances! After a race, I feel good knowing I have improved on my times and given it my all. What have been some highlights from your swimming career so far?

I have made it to NSW PSSA State Swimming in Homebush representing Narranga Public School and North Coast in Years 3, 4 and 6. In Year 4, I was the Junior Girls North Coast Age Champion which was pretty special. I have also competed and placed well in the

Skins Speedo Sprints and in many regional carnivals from Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Macksville, Coffs Harbour and Alstonville.

Let’s not forget dance that you’ve been doing since you were 3! What’s your favourite style of dance to perform, and what do you love about competing in eisteddfods?

It’s hard to choose a favourite style because I love them all, but I think jazz is the one I love a tiny bit more, followed closely by lyrical. I have just finished competing in the Kempsey Eisteddfod and the thing I love about them is meeting all the other dancers and being on stage of course. I especially love wearing all the different costumes and performing for an audience (which I have done in the lounge room since I could walk)! I represent Carnivale and my beautiful teachers there choreograph awesome routines for me to perform! They always support and challenge me to be the best dancer I can be.

You’ve already achieved so much. Do you have a favourite moment or memory from this year that really stands out?

That’s a really hard one. It would have to be when my U/14 Girls Coffs Harbour Suns team won our season undefeated last week. I also had a great experience representing North Coast in Sutherland playing against the best girls in the state. I made the North Coast

Softball team this year too and that was a new experience for me, but I learnt so much and had heaps of fun! I also enjoy cross country and qualified through school to the North Coast Carnival where I finished 11th.

I represent Carnivale and my beautiful teachers there choreograph awesome routines for me to perform! They always support and challenge me to be the best dancer I can be.

My goal for swimming this year was to make the North Coast teamwhich I did and I swam two PB’s at State in the 50m Butterfly and 200IM. I also received a contemporary scholarship from the Grafton Eisteddfod earlier this year.

You’ve just been awarded a sports scholarship to high school, congrats! What are you most excited about as you get ready for that next step?

Thank you. I was a little nervous about where I would be going to high school. Getting the BDC high school sports scholarship was such a special moment, it felt like everything I’ve been working hard for in basketball, swimming, and dance came together. My whole family was so proud and happy, and I’ll never forget that feeling. I’m excited to train with new coaches, meet new friends, and have more chances to grow in my sports. I can’t wait to see what I can achieve in high school with even more opportunities.

Who inspires you, whether it’s an athlete, coach, teacher, or someone in your family?

Definitely my Mum. She’s a basketball coach and used to be an amazing player, I still remember watching her win a state final when I was younger. She’s always there for me, encouraging me to be my best. I also look up to Arianna Titmus in swimming because she’s such a strong and focused athlete and all my dance teachers at Carnivale. What’s your biggest dream right now, where would you love to see your sport or dance take you in the future?

My dream is to represent Australia one day, maybe at the Olympics in swimming or basketball with the Opals just like Katie Rae Ebzery and Isla Juffermans! I’d love to travel the world doing what I love, whether that’s racing in butterfly events, playing in the WNBA, or even performing on stage in dance. I know it takes hard work, but I’m ready to go for it.

Thanks Millie.

Sue urrie

For more than 25 years, Sue Currie has been a steadfast advocate and compassionate presence in the community sector across the Coffs Harbour region. Her work has spanned se lement services, aged and disability care, housing support, youth and family services, sector development and grassroots community engagement during a time of enormous change.

As housing affordability worsens and cost-ofliving pressures mount, Sue’s insights offer both perspective and hope. We sat down with her to learn more about what’s changed, what challenges remain, and why she continues to dedicate her career to helping others.

What motivated you to begin working in the community sector?

In the mid 1980’s I was nursing at Broken Hill Base Hospital and in that time, I spent 2 years working night duty. In the main ward I worked in, there were several people who were admitted for “social” reasons as well as those receiving palliative care. When I had some space, I often spent time with these patients, hearing their stories, listening to their fears about dying or being alone or not knowing what the future held for them. It was then that I knew I wanted to move from the health sector to the community sector so I could work with people in a more holistic manner, (and if I’m also being honest, not doing any more shift work!). It still took another decade or so and a move to Emerald Beach, before I had the chance to complete a Bachelor of Social Welfare degree, and from then on, I’ve worked in community services.

Over the years, what have been some of your proudest moments?

Other than being very proud of my 2 adult children, I think one of the things I am most proud of, is the work that I currently do. I have been the Program Manager for Young People, Families and Communities for Blue Sky Community Services for around 10 years, and when I started in this role, I felt very nervous and lacked confidence, as I was stepping out of my comfort zone. Previously, I had been employed as the Mid North Coast Sector Support and Development Officer, but this new role, required a different set of skills and knowledge that I had to really work on (and continue to work on).

I o en spent time with these patients, hearing their stories, listening to their fears about dying or being alone or not knowing what the future held for them.

Has there been a particular person or experience that shaped your approach to this work?

I’ve been lucky in my work to have had some great mentors. I think though, I would have to say that Ruth Thompson, CEO of Blue

Sky Community Services, would have to be the most influential. I first worked with Ruth around 18 years ago and was impressed by her calmness, kindness and her wisdom. We became friends, then we each worked in different organisations for a few years, before I joined Mid North Coast for Regional and Social Development (renamed Mid Coast Communities and now called Blue Sky Community Services) where Ruth was the CEO. This was around 16 years ago, and to begin with we only had 6 staff and most of us were employed as project or sector development officers. It was under Ruth’s guidance that we expanded into service delivery, firstly delivering youth and family services which we still do, and fast forward to today, where we manage 3 early learning centres, deliver a range of other services including the NDIS local area coordination service, youth housing, aged care assessors, emergency relief as well as continuing with sector support and development.

After 25 years, what still inspires you to keep going?

Working for a great organisation, and a great team where we always celebrate wins, whether it is big or small! There is general celebration, for example, when a young person is successful in gaining a tenancy or a traineeship or their driving license. I work across different sectors including child, family, youth, housing, community engagement, welfare and sector development, so there is never a dull moment. I’m always learning, and there are always opportunities to identify how we can do things better. I’ve met some very inspirational people over the years, and I still get excited when I hear about an initiative that could really make a positive difference for disadvantaged communities.

landline, and if we weren’t in, someone would take a message and leave the details on a slip on your desk. When you returned to the office, there might be 5 or 6 messages on your desk, instead of 50 emails in your Inbox!

We now have many smaller funded programs (often on short term contracts) targeting a particular group of people or service activity (e.g. youth housing), whereas several decades ago, there were a lot fewer services delivering a wider range of support.

Many people feel housing affordability has worsened dramatically, how has this issue impacted the community members you work with?

I really think that at the moment, the problem is outpacing solutions, though you do see some effective local responses.

It certainly affects many people, including those that are working. I know some organisations have offered positions to people from other areas, who have had to turn down the role, as they weren’t able to find any housing that was affordable.

We had a university student this year who was doing their placement with us. They did some research on housing and the cost of living in the Coffs LGA. There were some alarming stats including: between 2019 and 2024 the median weekly rent for 2 bedroom accommodation increased by 46.97%. If a young person on Youth Allowance was to share this accommodation, they would still be paying 57.05% on rent alone.

Have you seen any effective local responses to housing insecurity, or do you feel the problem is outpacing solutions?

Strategy which is also a positive step.

In July this year, Rose Jackson MP, the NSW Minister for Housing and Homelessness (amongst other portfolios), announced a new housing development in Coffs Harbour and in Sawtell where 80 affordable and social housing new homes will be built, commencing in 2026. This is certainly great news as we know that addressing homelessness (including housing insecurity) is to prioritise providing stable and safe housing before addressing other needs such as mental health, substance use, unemployment etc.

How do rising costs of living like rent, food and utilities affect people’s ability to access support services?

I also manage an Emergency Relief program and when we first started with this program (approximately 6 years ago) we were able to offer appointments for people within the week - now it has blown out to several months (and even then, we have to put a hold on booking appointments). We also know there is an increased demand on all services, with wait lists, partly due to the rising costs of living and the additional demands and stresses this puts on households where there are already other risk factors present (e.g. isolation, domestic and family violence etc).

If you could make one systemic change to improve housing outcomes in this region, what would it be?

Over your decades of work, what are the most significant changes you’ve seen in the community sector locally?

Access to information has greatly changed over the years. For example, when I first started, mobile phones, emails and computers were still a relatively new concept, so we used paper files, people contacted us via a

I really think that at the moment, the problem is outpacing solutions, though you do see some effective local responses e.g. in 2024 the Royal Freemason Benevolent Institution (RFBI) completed 23 affordable units in Bellingen specifically for women over the age of 55 years. This offers rental security which is also close to the centre of town.

The City of Coffs Harbour Council is also in the process of finalising a Homelessness

I know it is very complex, but when so many people can be paying up to 60% of their income on just housing, (where it is generally accepted that rental properties are only considered “affordable” if they use 30%, or less of an individual’s income), how can all levels of governments, industry leaders, philanthropic entities, community services and community groups, peak bodies, people with lived experience etc work together to come up with innovative, flexible and long term solutions to greatly improve housing outcomes.

And a change that we can all do, free of charge, is to be KIND! Never underestimate what a difference this can make in someone’s life.

Thank you Sue.

From the Isles of Scilly to the Coffs Coast, a passion for food, family, and fresh ingredients drives restauranteur Marcus Blackwell. Known for the acclaimed Latitude 30, Marcus is now preparing to launch an exciting new venture at the Je y. We sat down with him to talk about his journey, the evolution of Coffs Harbour’s dining scene, and what’s next.

MARCUS BLACKWELL

HLatitude 30 has become a favourite Coffs restaurant for both locals and visitors. What’s your philosophy when it comes to food and hospitality?

Picture si ing on the deck, listening to the waves gently lapping on Je y Beach. That’s the atmosphere we want to create.

Our philosophy is to start with the best ingredients we can source, whether that’s locally caught fish and shellfish, aged beef from the Tablelands, or Bangalow pork. Our talented Head Chef Ricky Worthing and the kitchen team focus on letting the flavours shine through.

when can we expect to start dining at Mei Mei’s? We’ve basically been handed an empty shell. There’s a lot to do – the kitchen needs everything from extractor fans and cool rooms to a levelled floor. There isn’t even a ceiling in place yet. But, if all goes to plan, we hope to open before the Christmas holidays.

i Marcus. You grew up surrounded by natural beauty in the Isles of Scilly. How did that early connection to fresh, local food shape your passion for cooking? I was very lucky to be brought up on an idyllic island off the coast of Cornwall. From about ten years old, I spent all my free time fishing. We had a couple of pots we used to catch lobsters and crabs, and a small tangle net we set for flat fish, mainly plaice.

Being on a remote island, we were fairly self-sufficient and grew a lot of our own salad and vegetables. That connection to fresh food from the ocean and the garden shaped everything for me.

We now use a lot of fresh vegetables and salad ingredients grown locally. Since 2016, all our staff have worked a four-day week. We believe in creating work-life balance, which is so important in our industry.

You’re now launching a new venture at the Jetty: Mei Mei’s, an Asian fusion restaurant. What inspired you to branch out in this direction? We’ve been watching food trends across Australia and feel this is a direction we want to explore. It will offer something completely different to Latitude 30. How will Mei Mei’s differ in concept and atmosphere? Mei Mei’s will be more casual, on-trend with what’s happening in the cities. Property NSW has delivered a beautiful architectural building and we’re planning a stylish fit-out to match. Picture sitting on the deck, listening to the waves gently lapping on Jetty Beach. That’s the atmosphere we want to create.

What stage is the project at now and

Coffs Harbour has changed a lot since you arrived in 2002. How do you see the local dining scene evolving? It’s been amazing to watch. Let’s hope Coffs continues to grow and offer great dining experiences for locals and visitors alike.

What’s been your proudest moment so far? The journey at Latitude 30 has been incredible. When we took over in 2011, we had eight staff. Now, we employ over 50 and even more in the summer. Latitude has created a lot of ancillary jobs in the area too and that impact makes me proud.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes for both Latitude 30 and Mei Mei’s? I’d love to see both restaurants go from strength to strength and stay family-run for generations. My nephew George Blackwell is already running Latitude 30, so we’re on the right path.

Thanks Marcus.

charity dancefloors, Ashlee Downton is a powerhouse of grit, heart, and hometown pride. A lifelong Coffs Coast and Nambucca Valley local, Ashlee is proof that showing up, for your team, your community, and yourself, can lead to something pre y special.

ASHLEE DOWNTON

Hi Ashlee. Let’s go back to the beginning, were you always a sporty kid and what first got you into playing rugby?

I wasn’t really into sport growing up. I was more focused on music, but I spent every weekend on the sidelines watching my brothers play rugby league. I always wanted to play, but at the time, girls weren’t allowed to play footy. I was lucky to be involved in

touch football, and one of my teammates asked if I’d be interested in giving rugby a go. It had always been a dream of mine to play a contact sport, it just felt like it was in my blood. Fourteen years later, I’m still playing rugby union and loving every minute of it. What does being part of the Snappers team mean to you personally?

It means everything to me. It’s more than just a team, it’s a community of incredible people who lift each other up and inspire each other

everyday. I’m so grateful for the friendships, the support, and especially the chance to watch the next generation of girls grow into amazing players. It’s something I truly love being part of. What have been some highlights or stand out moments of your sporting career so far?

I felt incredibly proud and privileged to be part of the NSW Country Corellas Rugby Union team in 2024, and I’m currently working hard to earn a spot in the 2025 squad. The two

grand finals with my Snappers ladies, where we were the underdogs and took out the big win. A few years ago, I also had an amazing opportunity to play in the Super W when the competition came to Coffs Harbour. You recently stepped out of your comfort zone to dance in Stars of the Coffs Coast. What made you say yes to that challenge, and what was the experience like?

It was an unforgettable experience, one I’m truly grateful for. I had no dance experience at

all, so stepping into something completely unfamiliar really pushed me out of my comfort zone. But I’m always up for a challenge, and this was one of the most rewarding ones yet. Why is giving back or showing up for causes like the Cancer Council important to you?

their dances, the support and love everyone showed each other, and raising an epic $142,000, it was all just amazing to be part of. The atmosphere on the night was electric. The Coffs Coast is such a tight-knit community. What do you love most about being part of it, not just as a player or professional, but as a local?

Having lived along the Coffs Coast and in the Nambucca Valley my whole life, I know how special this place is. What I love most is the way people show up for each other, genuine support, even from those you don’t know. That sense of community is what makes it such an incredible place to call home.

What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from sport that carries into your everyday life?

It’s about pushing yourself, but also knowing when to support others. The mix of grit, compassion, and teamwork has shaped who I am both on and off the field.

Sport has taught me the value of hard work, showing up consistently, and backing the people around you. It’s about pushing yourself, but also knowing when to support others. The mix of grit, compassion, and teamwork has shaped who I am both on and off the field.

What would you say to young girls in the Coffs Coast region who look up to you or want to follow a path like yours - active, confident, and involved?

Cancer touches so many lives, but for me it is someone I cherish. It’s not until you watch someone close to you go through it that you truly grasp the emotional, physical and financial toll it can take. Supporting causes like the Cancer Council is important to me because it’s a way to give back, raise awareness, and hopefully make things just a little easier for those facing the fight.

What were some stand out moments from the night?

Watching the incredible stars absolutely nail

To any young girl out there wanting to get involved, just be you. Be proud of who you are, whether that’s strong and determined, soft and kind, or all of it at once. Don’t be afraid to take up space. Team sport, especially rugby, teaches you so much more than just how to play a game. It teaches you resilience, friendship, empathy, and how to back yourself and others. I’ve watched so many young girls go from shy and unsure to confident, capable, and fearless. The transformation is something I’ll always treasure. You don’t have to fit a mold. Just show up, give it a go, and know you’re more powerful than you think.

Thanks Ashlee.

ON PARK

Since opening its doors in 2023, the restaurant has not only impressed guests with its meticulously crafted dishes and warm hospitality, but has also established a loyal following among locals and visitors alike. As they mark their two-year anniversary, we sat down with Leah and Loic, the owners behind 99 On Park to reflect on their journey, the heart behind their food, and what lies ahead for this beloved local gem.

Congratulations on two years! How does it feel to reach this milestone? It’s incredibly rewarding. Two years in, and we’ve built something we’re truly proud of, not just the food, but the connection we’ve made with our guests. Seeing familiar faces return time and again, and being part of people’s special moments, is what makes it all worthwhile.

What inspired you to open a French restaurant in Coffs Harbour? Interestingly, we never set out to open a French restaurant, but with Loic being a French chef and many

of our original team also from France, the influence naturally came through in the food. Our vision was to create something elevated yet approachable, a place where fine technique meets local flavour.

Coffs is evolving into a real food destination, and we wanted to offer something fresh and unique to that growing scene.

For someone who’s never dined with you, how would you describe the experience?

Welcoming, seasonal, and elevated, with French roots and local soul. From the moment someone walks through our doors, we want them to feel at ease. Food is about connection, and that’s always been at the heart of what we do.

Everything is made fresh in-house, from our dry-aged beef to the syrups in our cocktails. There are no shortcuts, just genuine care in every detail.

How do you approach your seasonal menu? It always starts with what’s fresh and available locally. From there, it’s a creative process, finding balance in flavour, texture, colour, and presentation. We lean on classical technique but are constantly inspired by the ingredients that come from our own backyard here on the Mid North Coast.

Do you have a personal favourite dish?

Supporting locals isn’t just important to us, it’s integral to who we are and what we do.

What challenges or triumphs stand out from the past two years? Like many restaurants, we’ve faced our share of challenges, rising ingredient costs, staffing shortages, shifting dining habits, but we’ve also had incredible wins. We’ve built a loyal following, received amazing reviews, and had guests travel from as far as Sydney just to dine with us. That support means the world.

We’ll keep refining and evolving. We recently added a beer garden with a firepit, which opens the door for more casual gatherings and special events. Most importantly, we want to keep creating memorable moments, for locals and travellers alike.

HEELIS Darren

HFor local landscape and drone photographer

Darren Heelis, the Co s Coast is more than just home, it’s a never-ending source of inspiration. In this interview, Darren shares how chasing ‘golden hour’, exploring from above, and capturing the quiet beauty of nature has shaped his creative journey.

Coast, over the years upgrading camera equipment and developing and finding my personal preference.

Do you remember the first photo you ever took that made you think, ‘this is what I want to do’?

Yes, my first photo was a sunrise at the Jetty Beach, Coffs Harbour when I first purchased my first digital camera and now I'm always returning to capture that unique image.

i Darren. The Coffs area is such a visually rich place with beaches, rainforest and mountains, what first drew you to capturing this landscape through your lens?

Yes, it sure is a visually rich place. The Coffs Coast is a place for landscape photography and we are spoilt for choice, capturing unique images from the local area and being out in nature. I bought my first digital camera in 2012 and I started photographing ‘golden hour’ - sunrise and sunset. I created a Facebook photography page, regularly posting my local photos and

Your drone photography offers such a unique perspective. What do you love most about shooting from above?

I bought my first digital camera in 2012 and I started photographing golden hour, sunrise and sunset. I created a Facebook photography page, regularly posting my local photos...

Yes, drone photography does offer a unique perspective. The ability to have a top down perspective over a landscape scene and getting a birds eye view. A great experience recently was with whale season along the Coffs Coast. I was at Emerald Beach and flying the drone 100m above a newborn Humpback calf. I purchased my first drone, a Dji mini 3 pro just over two years ago, gaining confidence and not crashing or losing it and getting creative around the Coffs Coast. Continued over...

you’re shooting from the ground vs. in

the air?

On the ground when composing your photo to have a great foreground subject, you may also have obstacles in your way to block your scene. In the air you can get to navigate to places not accessible from landfinding hidden patterns, textures, angles and perspective of a subject.

Are there particular locations around the Coffs Coast that you return to again and again? What makes them special for you as a photographer?

That’s a tough one. Dorrigo with the mountains, its rainforest and waterfalls are always special. On the coast I tend to change my locations for a sunrise/sunset depending on weather conditions but Emerald Beach is a close favourite.

Your images often have a really peaceful, expansive quality, is that something you consciously look for when composing a shot, or does it just happen naturally?

Thank you. That is something I look for, it doesn’t happen naturally. Getting to a location, I like to find a unique composition for my images, for that really peaceful look.

Weather, lighting, and timing are everything in landscape photography. What are the biggest challenges you face when chasing the perfect shot?

Yes they definitely change the scene of a photo. In regards to timing, sometimes you may have a rainbow appear or sun rays that may appear for 2 minutes so getting into position for a photo needs to happen quickly. Or it might be storm clouds and lightning. I photograph a lot during the ‘golden hour’ and the lighting is changing very quickly .

I have been lucky for the Co s Coast Tourism to share my photography on social media and for the Co s Harbour Council to have one of my images published on the front cover of an inflight magazine.

wanting to get into it?

There’s a growing interest in drone photography, but it’s a real skill. What advice would you give to someone

Read up on the rules and restrictions around where to fly. Get to know your drone. Check your return to home point before you fly, this has saved my drone when my controller lost contact with my drone. Start with small flights on land. Buy filters to control light. Experiment with flying at different heights when composing an image. The use of grid lines to compose and frame your photos can be very helpful. Shoot in raw if your post processing and manual mode for photos when you get more advanced. Look for unique photos when shooting straight down over land or the ocean and watch out for aircraft and

eagles in the area!

What’s next for you, are there any exhibitions, projects, or dream shoots on the horizon?

I would like to see more of my images published and printed. I have been lucky for the Coffs Coast Tourism to share my photography on social media and for the Coffs Harbour Council to have one of my images published on the front cover of an inflight magazine.

I have also recently created a print store of local images for purchase. I’d like to create other products for sale, calendars and books etc, to stock in local shops for people to purchase for themselves or family and friends and a website for my photography portfolio and building my social media pages. An exhibition would be a goal, even if combined with other great local photographers. A big thanks also to the followers of my social pages.

Thanks Darren.

ARTIST of the MONTH

Gumbaynggirr artist and designer Sancia Ridgeway brings together storytelling, texture and connection to Country in a multidisciplinary practice that spans graphic design, fibre art and handcra ed publication. Ahead of her debut solo exhibition at Saltwater Freshwater Gallery opening in August, Sancia shares the journey behind her work and the cultural threads that weave through every piece she creates.

SANCIA RIDGEWAY

Hi Sancia, your work is so layered, visually and culturally. How would you describe what drives your art practice at its core?

In nearly all of my work uplifting the voices and stories of my people comes first; Gumbaynggirr and also the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. I studied graphic design, but I also like to branch out into the art space. I also have a fibre arts practice through my knitting and weaving. You can see all of these influences: design, art and fibre, in my work. When I’m doing a graphic for a graphic design job my passion for art and fibre comes through in the work and

vice versa.

As a Gumbaynggirr woman now based on Gadigal land, how do place and Country influence your creative process?

since

home all the time. It’s important for me to stay

I grew up on Gumbaynggirr Country, but since moving to Sydney 4 years ago I travel back home all the time. It’s important for me to stay connected to Country and family. I miss home a lot when I’m away.

I also have a fibre arts practice through my kni ing and weaving. You can see all of these influences: design, art and fibre, in my work. can see all of these

My own upbringing on Country and knowledge that has been passed on to me has helped me when doing freelance graphic design jobs in Sydney on Gadigal land. When I’m contracted for a job as a freelance graphic designer they often want me to provide a perspective as a First Nations’ person. Through lessons and protocols taught to me, I know it is not appropriate for me as a Gumbaynggirr person to tell the cultural stories of Gadigal people, so I turn to Country.

I am constantly inspired by Country. When creating designs or artworks I observe the patterns, colours, shapes and textures of Country and try to emulate this in my work. Even though I am not a Gadigal person, now

that I live in Sydney it has been important for me to have respect for Country there and to take the time to foster my own relationship with Country. Having a strong connection to my own Country has taught me how to have a relationship with Gadigal Country.

Your exhibition at Saltwater Freshwater Gallery brings your work back to Gumbaynggirr Country. What does that mean to you personally and artistically?

This will be my first solo exhibition, so it’s very special to me that it’s on Gumbaynggirr Country. I’m so happy that my family and friends from home will be able to see my work. I think communities in regional towns often miss out on creative opportunities and experiences that you can get in the big city. Galleries like Saltwater Freshwater make this possible for our community in Coffs Harbour and for other communities on Worimi, Biripi, and Dunghutti Country. The support that Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance gives to Aboriginal artists is so valuable. It feels like a full circle moment to be showcasing where I grew up.

Continued over....

Your practice spans both digital and handmade forms, from graphic design to fibre art. How do you navigate those two worlds, and where do they meet in your work?

I have always been someone who works with my hands when it comes to my creative practice. It was only when studying graphic design at university that I learnt the digital softwares that I use in my work now. Even though my work often has digital outcomes, the process always starts with my hands. My work often includes scans of physical textures or elements using mediums such as pencil, lino cut, oil pastels, paint or collage.

‘Yarns About Blak Joy’ is a publication I made about Blak Joy and knitting and it will be

showcased at the Saltwater Freshwater Gallery. In the book all of the elements are hand-cut and collaged. The textures that are featured throughout show scans of my knitwear, pages in the journal I kept during the time of making the work and images of Country that I took. This project is a culmination of all of these influences on my creative practice. Storytelling plays a central role in your work. Can you share how you approach telling stories through colour, texture, and pattern?

In my project ‘Yarns About Blak Joy’ colour, texture and pattern tell the story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Joy. I think that when we think of First Nations culture in Australia we think of earthy tones, and while this representation is true and authentic as it reflects Country, I think Blak people should be able to represent themselves in many different ways. First Nations people, like all other peoples, are multifaceted and unique. I wanted to celebrate

the diversity that exists within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Colour, texture and pattern was a way for me to visually assert a new narrative that diverts from traditional stereotypes. As humans, when we see visuals that are new, we allow ourselves to look at the content behind those visuals in a new way too.

Your commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness is a strong thread in your work. How does that influence the way you choose materials or design pieces?

Sustainability is something that is important to me as a young person and as an Aboriginal person. I have been told stories by my Elders of how much the landscape of Gumbaynggirr Country has changed. I have witnessed physical changes in my own lifetime, which is crazy as a person who is only in their

When I started knitting I knew I only wanted

to buy natural materials. Later on I discovered that op shops don’t have the systems in place to recycle yarn and material-based goods they receive, so acrylic yarn ends up in landfill and will degrade into microplastics. So I now use second-hand acrylic yarn in my practice as well. I think it is better to use second-hand acrylic yarn and turning it into art or giving it a second life by creating a garment for someone to wear.

I also save all of my scrap yarn pieces of yarn to make ‘scrap yarn garments’ and I save the offcuts from knitting projects and respin the scrap into new yarn which I knit into future garments. So I have managed to create an almost no-waste process in my knitting practice.

You create wearable pieces and garments. How does creating for the body change the way you think about form and function in your art?

When creating garments for the body it changes the way you view your art because your art becomes a visual representation of the

person who wears it. In my exhibition you will see the garments I knitted as part of this work, each garment is an embodiment of part of the individual who I knit it for. It tells one element of their story of Blak Joy and the role Joy plays in their life.

What can visitors expect to feel or experience when they walk into your exhibition at Saltwater Freshwater Gallery?

When creating garments for the body it changes the way you view your art because your art becomes a visual representation of the person who wears it.

They should expect to see lots of knitting! All of the garments created as part of this project will be on display. There will be two copies of the publication, one is a draft version and the other is the completed version. Visitors should expect to have an intimate experience with the project as they will be able to flip through the pages of the publication.

I think being able to touch artwork in a gallery is quite an unusual experience but I think it’s important for myself and the gallery to be generous in allowing people to experience

this work in a tactile way. It makes sense to the project that the pieces can be touched and that copies of the book can be read. We’re intending on making a cosy space where individuals and small groups are able to flick through the pages of the book in a gentle and respectful way.

Thanks Sancia.

PHIL NICHOLAS

BELLINGEN MEMORIAL HALL

Hi Let’s start with your journey. What first drew you to the creative industries, and how did that path lead to your current role at Bellingen Memorial Hall?

As a youngster, I played musical instruments and dabbled in amateur dramatics. I took a gamble in my late 20s by seeking work experience in the music industry, which gradually led to paid roles and provided me with an insider’s outlook on events and festivals. I spent years taking bands to countless venues and several more years mounting outdoor music and cultural festivals, so when the opportunity arose to manage an arts venue, I jumped at the chance. You’ve worked across the globe, from London’s iconic venues to grassroots festivals in regional NSW. How have those international experiences shaped the way you approach event production today? I don’t see why folks in regional NSW shouldn’t have access to the same diversity

and quality of arts performance that people have access to in capital cities. So little by little, with the resources at hand, I’m on a mission to make that happen. You’ve managed tours for artists like Jose Gonzalez and Femi Kuti, and produced events at venues like Southbank Centre and Hammersmith Apollo. What are some standout moments from that chapter of your career?

When you travel with a band on tour, you get to see every show, their best and their worst, all from the unique vantage point of the stage wings. I always found that a terrific privilege and joy.

What are the driving ideas behind programs like Bellingen Film Lovers and the Beyond Jazz Weekender? How do they contribute to the local cultural landscape?

Cinema is in the Hall’s DNA – the building itself was partly funded with the proceeds of film screenings held at an outdoor cinema, operated on this site during the mid-1920s. Film Lovers is a chance for locals to enjoy the best films of the

past year on the big screen and is partly inspired by my experience as a punter attending the Screenwave International Film Festival.

My Dad got me into jazz from an early age and I was fortunate to work for the London Jazz Festival in the mid-2000s, so when the opportunity arose to create a major event at Memorial Hall, I opted for jazz.

The program for Beyond Jazz Weekender is a fusion of live jazz, club culture, wellness and immersive art experiences. Innovative jazz-house supremo Horatio Luna and DJ Chris Gill from Melbourne, plus legendary saxophonist Sandy Evans and new jazz generation act Monstress from Sydney, are all looking forward to collaborating with our fantastic local jazz musicians.

On the Saturday morning, visitors can stroll through the Community Markets and enjoy a free concert by the Bellingen Big Band, before heading into the Hall for the remainder of that day’s festival program.

I’m thinking about their needs, their audience’s expectations, cultural context and ensuring stakeholders have an equal opportunity to contribute their perspective and ideas.

Let’s go DRAGON

BOAT RACING

Following a big year Camden Haven Dragonboat Club is in the last weeks of organising its second major Dragonboat Challenge. At Stoney Aqua & Activity Park on 13 and 14 September Dragonboat paddlers from south east Queensland to the far south coast of NSW will descend on the site just 15 minutes from Port Macquarie CBD. With generous support from Port Macquarie Hastings Council and Laurieton United Services Club, this year the challenge is expected to surpass all expectations after 2024 paddlers hailed the unique program

one they didn’t want to miss next time round.

Two full days of racing will test the 20 and 10 paddler crews in womens, opens and mixed teams as well as an All Cancer Survivors race and a novelty 1.4km race around the two small islands at each end of the lake.

In the words of Club President Anni Yaringa “Paddlers will be out of one boat and into another and on the water many more times than their usual experience at a local regatta. Races will be running every 10 minutes over the two days.”

To focus on the need for safety in all water activities there will be a simulated boat roll-

over and recovery conducted as well as an equipment maintenance workshop included on the program.

Port Macquarie Marine Rescue will provide takeaway food options and there will be plenty of coffee to help cope with the 6am starts on both days. Local DJ Sir Rocco will keep the vibe jumping with music and race results, adding to the festival atmosphere. Stoney Park offers on site accommodation from self-contained cabins to free camping, with pets also welcome on site. Ground FROM THE

Heart

Farm Cultivates Creativity, Connection, and Country.

We spoke to Ash Brooks to tell us more…

Heart Farm is a sanctuary and creative retreat currently under building and development in Lanitza, New South Wales, approximately 50 minutes from Coffs Harbour.

It's a sanctuary, a creative retreat, and a vision brought to life by artists and founders Samantha Ross, Thomas Wong, and Ashleigh Brooks. This farm merges passion for creation, dance/movement, animals and holistic healing on Gumbaynggirr Country.

Current projects of Heart Farm are so diverse, but will embrace nature and quality performance from the heart.

Our projects Sentient and Country Cosmic are coming up in August and September.

Heart Farm Rural Company

Heart Farm Rural Company is a creative movement company that celebrates and uplifts the work of professional artists and creatives from regional communities.

We are currently developing a retreat space on our Lanitza Clarence Valley 30-acre property. An environment designed to foster deep connection through movement, creation, nature, and storytelling. Over the past year, we have hosted our first intimate dance retreats on the land, weaving together creative expression, freestyle exploration, dance practices, and the nurturing of reconnection to both nature and self.

Heart Farm Rural Company’s vision is to gather annually for retreat-style creative developments

hosted on Country. These gatherings will culminate in the creation and presentation of new performance works, with the aim of touring them across Australia, and it hopes eventually to tour internationally.

Sentient

Sentient is the debut work developed and presented by Heart Farm Rural Company. The cast of professional dancers and artists share this rare opportunity of performing to this format of skillful dance and relationship to nature: Our artists are Samantha Ross, Thomas Wong, Darci O’Rourke, Aaron Griffin, Cinta Gare, Lily Josephine Smith, Kate Clerkin, Tayla Mackay.

This show is a living, breathing fusion of heartcentred creativity, contemporary, hip hop, breaking, freestyle and storytelling. It is deeply inspired by our reconnection to nature and a return to our natural state of being. Sentient invites audiences into a shared experience of feeling, a remembering of what it is to be alive, aware, and open. The work dives into

the depths of human emotion and explores the many ways we express, embody, and move through feeling.

To be sentient is to feel. To sense. To awaken.  This work is born from our time on Country, shaped by our connection with the land, each other, and the animals. It is a celebration of presence, sensitivity, and the innate intelligence of story, mind, body and spirit in motion. This work will be choreographed, directed, and facilitated by Samantha Ross.

Samantha Ross, born on Gumbaynggirr country has been woven with creativity from the very beginning, growing up immersed in the arts. For Sammy, dance is more than technique, it’s storytelling, identity, and connection.

Sammy returned home approximately 10 years ago to her roots and her first love, horses. She has since been building Heart Farm, where she offers mentorship, retreats, equine assisted sessions, brumby rescue, creative developments & professional therapeutic care.

About the Event

Sentient will unfold in two halves, celebrating movement as a tool for storytelling, connection, and deeper sensing:

First half: A shared stage for local schools, communities, studios, and local artists to present work that reflects their unique voice and creative essence.

Second Half : Original works by the Heart Farm Rural Company, shaped through our week long retreat development.

A long-time champion of regional touring, Aussie hiphop artist Illy is hi ing the road again, bringing his highenergy live show to Co s Harbour. Ahead of the tour, we caught up with him to talk small town gigs, musical evolution, and why a good bakery pie is an essential part of life on the road.

ou’re heading to Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie as part of your tour, how does it feel bringing your music back to regional towns like these? What do you look forward to about these shows?

Yeah, it feels really good. I've spent my entire career doing regional tours, it has been a huge part of it all. It's something that I not only look forward to but It's just so innately part of being a musician to me. I know that some people don't have that approach, but I always have. To me it's just like, the album’s out, we've done the capitals, and now I wanna get in the van and get my band on the road and spend a few months seeing the country, so I'm really looking forward to it. Your sound has evolved a lot over the years. How would you describe where you're at musically right now?

You’ve collaborated with some other big names in Aussie music like Hilltop Hoods, Vera Blue, WAAX and more. Are there any dream collaborations still on your bucket list?

I mean, The Hoods were always the one for me, growing up as an Aussie hip-hop fan. I'd love to work with them again. I'd love to do some more hip-hop related collabs in the future. I mean there's plenty of other great names out there. But as far as dream collab.. I don't know... I feel like you put an album out and then you stop, well at least I do. I always feel like I just wanna listen to podcasts for a couple of months, I just don't wanna have to think about music. So it might be time once this tour gets up and going and the juices get flowing again, to start thinking about that.

Pretty much that! I mean the last time we were at Port Mac it was chaos. Finnians is such a fun venue. You're right up close to everyone, so that was great. I expect, I demand, the same energy this time around! But yes, you know we bring it.

Yeah, in a really good spot I think. I hate the idea of making the same album over and over again, it's just not inspiring. I don't know how people do it to be honest without just being completely uninspired by the prospect of making music. So I've always pushed myself to try different things. I love rap, I love hip-hop, but I also have always loved melody. I've tried to incorporate that from the first album to the latest, and I feel like I've got a good balance now. I can write a chorus as comfortably as I can write a verse, and yeah I feel really good about where it’s at.

Your live shows have a reputation for high energy and crowd connection. What can fans expect from these upcoming coastal gigs?

Pretty much that! I mean the last time we were at Port Mac it was chaos. Finnians is such a fun venue. You're right up close to everyone, so that was great. I expect, I demand, the same energy this time around! But yes, you know we bring it. We’ve won awards for how good we are on stage, and the band is as tight as it's ever been, the set list is as tight as it's ever been, so you can expect high energy and a lot of fun!

What does a day in the life on tour look like for you, especially when you’re travelling through smaller towns and

coastal stops?

I mean, depending on how big the night before was.. wake up, find the best bakery in town, get a pie, get a ginger beer, get into the 12 seater with everyone and make our way to the next spot, get to sound check, rinse and repeat! It sounds boring, but it's really not. It's a lot of fun. Getting to see these different places, it's not like you have heaps of time to do touristy stuff, but if there's like a Big Banana or a Big Prawn or if there's a nice lookout somewhere or a local thing that you can see in a drive-by for 15 seconds and get a funny photo situation, then we do that! It is hard when you have like a five hour drive and then you have a sound check and then you have the show that night. After a few shows, a few weekends of that, you get pretty quickly into selfpreservation mode. Which is fine; it's awesome, but it's just like if you're out there trying to do everything the show is gonna suffer, and it's never worth that. What’s next after this tour? Are you working on new music, or planning to take a bit of a breather?

I'm already working on new stuff but honestly there's 27 shows on this tour so that's not really where the focus is right now. I'm not thinking about after this tour much yet. I'm thinking about getting through this tour in one piece and then I'll worry about what comes after.

And lastly, for your fans here on the Mid North Coast, any message before you hit the stage?

Yeah, just that I'm really looking forward to playing there. The crowds are always awesome. Coffs and Port Mac have always been really great crowds for me going way back and I'm looking forward to seeing you guys again. Get around it because it's gonna be a good time.

Thanks Illy.

ONEFOUR are embarking on their biggest Australian tour yet, ‘LOOK AT ME NOW’, sharing its name with their highly anticipated debut album, which was released in June. They will be bringing their high energy show to the stage at the Hoey Moey here in Coffs Harbour on Friday the 15th of August!

You’re bringing the Look At Me Now tour to the Hoey Moey in Coffs Harbour, how does it feel to be taking your story and sound to regional stages?

J Emz: Definitely feels overdue, it’s been years in the making but more than anything we’re just excited to be performing for our fans, especially in places we’ve never been before. We know from experience that our fans in regional or remote places go hard, sometimes even harder than the major cities.

The title of this tour, Look At Me Now, feels powerful and personal. What does it mean to you as a group at this point in your journey?

Spenny: Look At Me Now is the title of our debut album because we wanted to tell our story, and nothing defines our story better than all the challenges and obstacles we’ve faced, as individuals and as a group. It’s been a long road to get here, and many people wrote us off or assumed we were destined to fail. Yet here we are. You’ve come a long way from Mount Druitt to making global waves. When you look back at those early days, did you ever imagine you’d be here now? What have been some career highlights for you guys?

it’s still a spin out to reflect on our achievements across the years. We don’t often do that, to be honest, we’re always just focused on the next thing. Some highlights so far have been doing our own national headline tour, collaborating with artists we grew up listening to, and supporting Kid Laroi in arenas and stadiums around Australia last year.

For people seeing ONEFOUR live for the first time in Coffs, what can they expect from the show?

Spenny: Raw energy, that’s what we try to bring to every show we do. For our fans in Coffs, it will be our first time ever performing there so we’ll be playing plenty of fan favourites from our catalogue, as well as songs from our new album. The drill scene in Australia has grown rapidly, but you were the pioneers. How do you see the scene evolving now, and where do you see yourselves in it going Forward?

We’re happy to have paved the way for drill music in Australia. There’s some young lads from our area who are pushing drill forward currently, that’s RFA and LF70, keep an eye out for those boys.

Celly: We’re happy to have paved the way for drill music in Australia. There’s some young lads from our area who are pushing drill forward currently, that’s RFA and LF70, keep an eye out for those boys. Your lyrics often carry a strong message about loyalty, struggle, and pride. How important is it for you to represent where you’re from on this tour?

Celly: We always knew we had it in us, we’ve always believed in ourselves and what we’re capable of. But

J Emz: We represent where we’re from in everything we do, on and off stage. Thanks guys.

Born out of a vinyl-fuelled friendship in Year 9 and raised on the sticky floors of Co s Harbour pub gigs, Purple Disturbance are fast becoming one of the loudest young voices in Australia’s punk rock resurgence. With raw energy, wild stage antics, and songs already making waves internationally, the teenage four-piece are proving this is way more than a hobby, it’s a movement.

PURPLE Disturbance

Let’s rewind, how did Purple Disturbance come together, and at what point did you realise this wasn’t just a hobby band, but something bigger?

It all started in year 9 when Jed and Thomas formed a friendship over Jed’s vinyl collection. Jed had been playing guitar for years but Thomas couldn’t even comprehend the art of singing. We gaslit Josh into picking up a bass and playing at the Seaview Tavern in Woopi and I suppose the rest is history, it would be safe to say we have progressed from then. Now with Jess on drums, it feels like there is no stopping us. I suppose we realised it could become more than a hobby when we started

doing supports and tours with the likes of Dune Rats and Grinspoon. The first tour with Grinspoon was important and was great to see such a positive response from audiences, it really hit home. Since then we have seen many peaks in interest and at the moment it is escalating really quickly, in a good way, we are still only teenagers, but the ride so far has been insane.

How would you guys describe what Purple Disturbance is all about?

Purple Disturbance is all about being unique, creative and ridiculous. Sadly rock music nowadays has become less dangerous and more mainstream, if it's in the mainstream at all. Punk however has seen some recent comebacks, slowly creeping back and

becoming more accessible. We draw punk rock into our sound which for us is the best way to express ourselves. As a young Aussie band we strive to be more outspoken, temperamental and honest. Music is such a powerful artform, giving a voice to young people from all kinds of backgrounds is really important for us. You’ve said that you’ve drawn inspiration from bands like The Clash, Joy Division, and Talking Heads. What is it about those acts that hit home for you, and how do they shape your music today?

We would like to think we draw from the Clash’s politics, Talking Heads obscurity and Joy Division's existentialism. We have always admired how these bands have pushed the boundaries and embraced the unconventional. As we progress as a band we find ourselves finding our own unique sound that brings heavy rock together as a unified force that’s unapologetically ours. Each of us have our own hyper fixation on certain bands and artists. The first song we ever played together was Pyscho Killer by Talking Heads, we kind of sped it up and messed with it a little.

Coming from right here in Coffs Harbour, how much has regional-town life

influenced your sound and attitude as a band?

We are extremely grateful to Coffs. It’s the place that brought us all together. As a young band we have been lucky enough to experience opportunities like playing at the Hoey Moey or the Seaview that not only helped us grow as musicians but gave us the confidence to think bigger. As small town kids we are beyond excited to go and explore what's out there musically for us and we can forever be grateful to Coffs for getting us on our feet.

This year is shaping up to be huge with further tour supports for legends like Grinspoon and another big Aussie act (who you say you can't announce just yet but will in mid August). What are you most looking forward to about sharing the stage with these bands?

As small town kids we are beyond excited to go and explore what’s out there musically for us and we will forever be grateful to Co s for ge ing us on our feet.

Oh yeah, we are stoked to be asked back to support Grinspoon again, this time for their 30th anniversary tour. I think we are doing about 7 shows with them, we are long term fans and they are absolute gentlemen, the crew, the band, lovely. It's such a thrill to see the inner workings of bigger gigs. We have another 7 shows locked in through September October, from the Sunny Coast in QLD to Geelong, Melbourne and everywhere in between with (we can't say yet…sorry), but they are a big and awesome band, great times ahead.

Two of your songs are being featured in a Rip Curl surf movie. How did that come together, and what’s it been like knowing your music is going to be featured in a film?

We are beyond stoked to be a part of this, its an international release featuring the best young surfers on the planet and yeah, they are using two of our previous releases, Millee and Gus and Juice Stick. Vaughan Blakey,

the director of the film has been a long time mate of ours and we were actually in the car returning from a Melbourne tour when he asked if he could use the songs. We were obviously blown away and it's been sick seeing the Rip Curl brand using our songs as the main promo for the film. The whole experience has been epic and I think the movie is released late July, it's called “Dunno”. We are hoping that we can work together again in the future and look to have the surf industry and music industry walk hand in hand together again.

What’s your songwriting and creation process usually like?

Our songwriting process can be quite grueling and challenging. We are never satisfied if a song isn’t fleshed out enough to have its own personality. Each song has to be unique and memorable. Usually it starts with a riff, like most songs, followed by multiple jam sessions trying different approaches. Lyrics are written by Thom and the song is then debuted live with the hope that it sounds good. We have songs about homelessness, oppression, feminism and Rob Lowe. Your shows have a rep for being wild and

high-energy. What’s the best (or weirdest) thing that’s happened at a Purple Disturbance gig so far?

There have been many strange incidents when we have been on stage. One including Jed licking the floor of the Cherry Bar in Melbourne, moments later the audience fell through the floor exactly where he licked it, strange eh. Another was recently, again in Melbourne, where Thom smeared peanut butter all over his bare chest and the audience proceeded to dip crackers into the peanut butter void and eat them, of course Jed licked it off him. We have made enemies of cowboys in Tamworth and brought questionable items on stage.

What’s next for you guys? Gigs? More releases? Maybe world domination?

The future is looking very bright, we have signed a distribution deal with a Brisbane label called Anti Dismal, a youth led movement of a label and will be releasing our new single, Criticize, Penalize, Attack and Slam on the 8th August. We also have massive news, and again, can't say it yet as the announcement will not be until late August, let's just say it is big!! We are riding a wave at the moment and are grateful for all that is happening around us. We will be moving to the big city in 2026 and yeah, why not, world domination sounds nice.

Thanks Guys.

THE MID NORTH COAST

With

SAMANTHA McGOWAN FROM LA LUZ CONTENT CREATING

We’re doing the Expo again – Coffs Wedding Vendors at the Showground! We’re bringing the Wedding Expo back to Coffs Harbour and you’re invited.

oin us on Saturday, 16 August from 10am at the Coffs Harbour Showground for a day of inspiration, connection, and expert advice from some of the region’s best wedding vendors.

Whether you’re just starting to plan or putting the final touches on your day, this is your chance to meet the people behind the services face to face.

Vendors include Triple S Entertainment, Hold the Phone Audio, Wedding Wise, Amanda Martin Celebrant, Kev’s Wedding Transport, B and K Creative, Sugar Kitchen, Jane Dawson Celebrant, Greenhouse Pavilion, Handi-Hire, Cakes By Nay, The Photoshack, Donovans Surf Club, Aanuka Beach House, The Link, Married By Sam, Coastal Couture Flowers, and Makeup by Nicola Jill.

A must-attend for engaged couples and wedding dreamers alike.

Why host a wedding expo? Last year, I wanted a stall but there was no event so I created one. This year, with amazing support from vendors like Fallon from Fallon Photography, Aleshia from Special Occasions, Jacqui from Wedding Wise, and Sam Dawson, it’s grown into something beautiful.

It’s more than business, it’s about community, passion, and celebrating the people who make weddings magical.

Who can attend? Anyone planning a wedding or interested in the wedding industry is welcome. Engaged couples, family, friends, and anyone helping with wedding plans in the Coffs Harbour area.

What can they expect? A relaxed and friendly event where you can meet local wedding vendors, get expert advice, see samples, and ask questions. The first 200 brides will receive a special gift bag, and there will be exciting prizes to win on the day.

Tell us more about La Luz Content Creating and Wedding Reels, and how this has become popular at weddings La Luz means "My Light" in Spanish. (My Colombian friends might say I’m saying it wrong, but what would they know, right?)

At La Luz, we capture those special, candid moments throughout your wedding day and turn them into short reels and photo montages. Usually, we deliver these to the bride and groom within 24 hours so they can share their special day instantly on their socials.

Why is it important to meet your suppliers face to face? Meeting your wedding suppliers in person allows you to build trust and get a real sense of their style, professionalism, and personality. Is there an entrance fee? No, entry to the wedding expo at Coffs Harbour Showground is free for all attendees. Come along, explore, and connect with local wedding vendors at no cost.

Our work doesn’t replace your videographer or photographer as we simply add that extra touch to capture the small moments often missed, helping take the stress off the people behind the cameras.

We use an iPhone 15 Pro Max and an Osmo Pocket gimbal for smooth shots, plus drone footage for stunning aerial views. Our setup also includes two DJI wireless microphones to capture clear, high-quality audio that brings your videos to life.

Thanks Sam.

FROM THE DIGITAL LANEWAY

an you tell us about your business?

Go Go Beauty is my homebased beauty salon located just a few minutes from the beach in beautiful Valla Beach on the Coffs Coast. Originally a mobile business (hence the name), I transitioned into a home salon, creating a calm, coastal-inspired space where clients can unwind and truly feel taken care of.

I specialise in rejuvenating facials and therapeutic massage, and I’m proud to say that every treatment is tailored to suit the individual. My most popular service is the Neolift/Buccal Facial (the buccal massage helps people with sinuses, TMJ people that grind their teeth and headaches), Neolift lifts and sculpts using advanced techniques, and deeply relaxing massages that soothe both the body and the mind.

I also use and retail two beautiful product ranges that align with my values: Pure Fiji, known for its natural, tropical-infused skincare that nourishes the skin and uplifts the senses, and Bestow Beauty, a wellness-based range of inner health supplements designed to support skin from within. I’m a big believer in the idea that beauty starts on the inside, and this philosophy is at the heart of my approach. What’s your favourite part of the work you do? The best part of my job is seeing the

transformation in my clients, not just on the outside, but emotionally and energetically. Many of the women who visit me are busy, stressed, and in need of time for themselves. When they leave, they’re glowing, calm, and more connected to themselves. That change is magical to witness.

It brings me so much joy to be able to offer that little escape from the outside world. It’s more than just skincare - it’s self-care. I love creating a nurturing environment where people feel seen, heard, and truly cared for.

Who is your greatest influence in business? I’ve been inspired by many incredible women in business such as the founders of Pure Fiji, Janine Tait from Bestow Beauty, but my greatest influence has been my mother. She was always strong, creative, and independent - qualities that shaped my work ethic and belief in myself. I’ve also been deeply influenced by my mentors in the beauty industry who’ve encouraged me to take risks, trust my intuition, and keep learning. What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast? I feel incredibly lucky to live and work in Valla Beach. The natural beauty of the area is incredibly grounding, and my clients often comment on how peaceful it feels here. Living so close to the ocean means I can start or end my day with a walk by the sea, something I never take for granted. There’s a strong sense of community on the

Coffs Coast, especially among small business owners. I’ve met so many passionate, talented women doing amazing things, and we all support each other. It’s a great place to grow both personally and professionally. What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world? Back yourself. You don’t need to have it all figured out to start - just begin, and you’ll learn along the way. Trust in your unique voice and the value you bring. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s.

Also, surround yourself with people who lift you up. Whether it’s mentors, friends, or a supportive online community, it makes a huge difference when you have people who believe in you, especially on the tough days.

IThe Power of

EMOTIONAL VULNERABILITY

n a world that often celebrates stoicism and self-reliance, emotional vulnerability may feel like a weakness. However, the truth is quite the opposite. Emotional vulnerability is not only a sign of strength but also a powerful tool for personal growth, deeper connections, and improved mental well-being. By embracing vulnerability, we allow ourselves to be authentic, foster trust in relationships, and unlock the potential for profound transformation.

Many people associate vulnerability with fragility or weakness. This misconception stems from societal norms that encourage suppressing emotions and maintaining a façade of invincibility. However, vulnerability is not about exposing yourself recklessly or being overly emotional. Instead, it is about having the courage to be honest about your feelings, fears, and needs, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Brené Brown, a renowned researcher on vulnerability, describes it as “uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.” It takes immense strength to confront these aspects of life headon, making vulnerability a hallmark of resilience and courage.

When we embrace vulnerability, we allow ourselves to be authentic. This means acknowledging our emotions, even the difficult ones, and understanding how they shape our thoughts and actions. Emotional vulnerability fosters self-awareness, helping us identify our values, boundaries, and areas for growth.

STRENGTH IN BEING OPEN

Vulnerability is the foundation of trust and intimacy in relationships. When we open up to others, we create space for genuine connection. Sharing our struggles and emotions encourages others to do the same, fostering mutual understanding and empathy. This is particularly important in family dynamics, friendships, and romantic relationships, where emotional openness can strengthen bonds.

Facing vulnerability head-on helps us build resilience. By confronting our fears and uncertainties, we develop the ability to navigate challenges with greater confidence. Vulnerability also promotes personal growth by encouraging us to step out of our comfort zones and embrace change.

Suppressing emotions may lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical health issues. On the other hand, expressing vulnerability allows us to process our emotions in a healthy way. This may reduce feelings of isolation and improve overall mental well-being.

When we begin to embrace emotional vulnerability, we need to start small. Begin by sharing your feelings with someone you trust. It could be a close friend, family member, or mental health professional. Gradually, you will become more comfortable with expressing vulnerability in other areas of your life.

Share your emotions with people who have earned your trust and respect. is ensures that your openness is met with understanding and support.

FROM BEYOND THE SURFACE COUNSELLING with JULIE THOMAS

Being vulnerable requires self-compassion. Remind yourself that it is okay to feel emotions and that doing so does not make you weak. Treat yourself with kindness and patience as you navigate this journey.

While vulnerability is powerful, it is important to set boundaries. Share your emotions with people who have earned your trust and respect. This ensures that your openness is met with understanding and support.

If you find it challenging to embrace vulnerability, consider seeking support from a mental health professional. They can provide a safe space to explore your emotions and guide you in developing healthy coping strategies.

Embracing emotional vulnerability is a journey, not a destination. It requires courage, patience, and practice. By allowing yourself to be open and authentic, you may unlock the strength within and create a life filled with deeper connections, personal growth, and resilience. Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Moss

THE SKIN SPECIALIST TRANSFORMING COMPLEXIONS ACROSS THE COAST

With more than 20 years of acute care experience, Registered Nurse Xanthe Moss brings clinical expertise and compassionate care to the world of aesthetic treatments. At her two newly opened skin clinics in Nambucca Heads and Co s Harbour, Xanthe o ers professional, resultsdriven services tailored to support each client’s individual skin health goals.

Her specialty? Evidence-based aesthetic treatments like professional microneedling designed to improve texture, support a more even tone, and promote long-term skin vitality. “Every skin journey starts with a conversation,” she explains. “It’s not about trends, it’s about safe, informed care that helps you feel confident in your own skin.” Each appointment begins with a thorough consultation to ensure the most appropriate treatment plan. Her calming studio setting blends medical precision with a personalised touch, supporting clients who may be addressing common concerns such as pigmentation, scarring, or fine lines.

With complimentary consultations now available, it’s the perfect time to explore what’s possible with a trusted professional by your side.

Congratulations on the opening of your two clinics! What inspired you to launch in both Nambucca and Coffs?

Thank you! Opening in both Nambucca Heads and Coffs Harbour felt like a natural extension of my passion for accessible, professional skin health services. I’ve always

believed that clinical-grade aesthetic care shouldn’t be limited to major cities and both communities showed a growing interest in evidence-based treatments delivered with warmth and integrity.

These locations also hold personal meaning for me: they’re home to incredible people who value connection, trust and quality care. By launching in both areas, I hoped to create spaces where clients could feel truly seen, heard, and supported in their skin journey whether they’re exploring microneedling for the first time or looking to maintain long-term results.

From there, a great foundational option is microneedling (Collagen Induction Therapy). It’s a versatile treatment that supports collagen production, refines skin texture, and promotes a more even tone, making it ideal for many common skin concerns. Because every treatment is personalised, we ensure it aligns with your individual skin type and long-term goals.

By launching in both areas, I hoped to create spaces where clients could feel truly seen, heard, and supported in their skin journey...

For someone new to your clinic, what services do you recommend starting with?

For new clients, I always recommend beginning with a comprehensive skin consultation. This allows us to explore your unique skin concerns, discuss your goals, and assess the most suitable treatment pathway in a safe and informed setting.

Ultimately, it’s about feeling heard, respected, and empowered from the very first appointment. That’s the experience I aim to create.

Let’s talk treatments! What’s popular right now?

Right now, microneedling is one of the most in-demand treatments, and for good reason. Clients are loving its versatility and the noticeable improvements it offers in skin texture, tone and overall vitality.

At XMAesthetics, we use microneedling to stimulate collagen production through precise micro-injuries, which encourages

the skin’s natural healing process. It’s particularly popular for addressing concerns like fine lines, enlarged pores, mild scarring and uneven pigmentation. Plus, it enhances the absorption of active skincare products, helping you get more from your at-home routine.

Whether you’re new to aesthetic treatments or looking for a results-driven option with minimal downtime, microneedling continues to be a trusted favourite.

Whether you're new to aesthetic treatments or looking for a results-driven option with minimal downtime, microneedling continues to be a trusted favourite.

You also offer volume restoration, tell us more about that.

Volume restoration is one of those treatments that not only enhances appearance but subtly restores balance to the face. At XMAesthetics, we focus on clinical-grade dermal filler treatments designed to soften areas of volume loss and gently enhance natural facial contours. Whether you’re noticing changes in cheek fullness, under-eye hollowness, or overall facial definition, volume restoration can offer supportive structure, without compromising your natural look. Treatments are always

customised and every client begins with a detailed consultation to discuss goals, assess suitability, and ensure we’re working with both safety and harmony in mind.

What sets your clinics apart from others?

What truly sets my clinics apart is the blend of clinical knowledge and compassionate, age-aware care. As a mature woman and experienced nurse, I understand firsthand how skin evolves over time, not just physically, but emotionally as well. My approach is grounded in empathy, honesty, and creating a non-intimidating environment where clients feel respected, heard, and fully informed.

Clients often tell me they appreciate being treated as individuals, not trends. Whether someone’s navigating pigmentation, volume loss, or just wants to feel fresher in their skin, I provide treatments with warmth, integrity, and no pressure. It’s not about chasing perfection, it’s about supporting confidence at every stage.

What’s your message to anyone curious

but unsure about booking?

I completely understand, stepping into a new space or exploring a treatment for the first time can feel a little daunting. That’s why at XM Aesthetics, everything begins with a conversation, not a commitment. My goal is to create a calm, pressure-free environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered with information, whether you choose to go ahead or not.

There’s no expectation to book immediately, and no sales pitch, just professional guidance and genuine support for wherever you are in your skin journey.

If it’s sparked your curiosity, let’s chat. You might be surprised at how comfortable and uplifting that first step can be.

How can people book?

Booking is simple and personal. You can call or text 0475 472 029 to schedule your complimentary consultation or treatment. And if you’d rather have a conversation before booking, I welcome that too. There’s no pressure, just professional guidance and genuine care. When you’re ready, I’m here to support your skin confidence journey. Thanks Xanthe.

Massage Wness Thai

Tucked away in the heart of the Co s Coast is a peaceful sanctuary dedicated to restoring balance and wellbeing, ai Massage Wellness Co s. At the helm is Waraphorn Emery, a warm, experienced therapist whose journey from ailand to Australia has led her to build one of the most trusted massage therapy practices in the region.

With a strong emphasis on remedial care and personalised treatments, Waraphorn and her team provide more than just relaxation, they offer real results for those dealing with tension, stress, and injury. We caught up with Waraphorn to learn more about her story, her services, and her passion for helping people feel their best.

Tell us a little about your background and what led you to start Thai Massage Wellness Coffs.

I was born in Thailand and moved to Australia in 2009. After arriving, I studied English at TAFE and completed a Certificate III in Hairdressing. I worked in hairdressing for 15 years, which helped me develop a strong connection with clients. When my sister came to Australia after completing her studies in

remedial massage, I became inspired to follow a similar path. I eventually earned my Diploma in Remedial Massage and opened my own practice here in Coffs Harbour.

What sets your massage therapy business apart from others in the region?

Our practice is focused on remedial therapy and helping clients overcome physical discomfort and stress. Every member of my team is fully qualified in remedial massage and committed to client care. We’ve created a space that is clean, quiet, and truly calming, somewhere people can really let go.

What services do you offer, and do you specialise in any specific techniques?

We mainly offer remedial and relaxation massages, but also provide cupping and use therapeutic oils to support stress relief and muscle recovery. While our techniques are grounded in traditional practices, we tailor each session to the individual client and their needs.

Every member of my team is fully qualified in remedial massage and commi ed to client care. We’ve created a space that is clean, quiet, and truly calming, somewhere people can really let go.

How do you ensure each client receives a personalised experience?

Every new client fills out a consultation form before their first session. This includes any injuries, surgeries, or areas of concern, which allows us to create a treatment

plan that’s safe, effective and tailored to their body.

What’s your vision for the future of Thai Massage Wellness Coffs?

Our goal is to be the most trusted and relaxing massage clinic on the Coffs Coast. We want people to know they can come to us not only for relief but for consistent, high-quality care.

How does your team stay current with industry trends and best practices?

Our team is very experienced, and we continuously learn from one another. We also stay up to date with the latest health and wellness information to ensure our techniques are both modern and effective.

What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the massage industry? Start by enrolling in a Diploma of Remedial

Massage, and get as much hands-on experience as you can. Practice is key in this line of work.

How important is client feedback to your business?

Our goal is to be the most trusted and relaxing massage clinic on the Coffs Coast. We want people to know they can come to us not only for relief but for consistent, high-quality care.

It’s incredibly important. We encourage feedback through in-person conversations and an easy online review system. We take every comment seriously and use it to improve our service.

What do you enjoy most about running your own practice?

I love being my own boss and working alongside a great team. But most of all, I enjoy seeing the difference we make in our clients’ lives, it’s the best reward.

Can you share a memorable experience since opening your business?

Yes, an elderly client who was struggling with mobility began visiting us. After just a few treatments, they regained some independence and confidence. Seeing that transformation was really special.

Do you have any offers for new clients?

New clients receive a loyalty card, and if they refer a friend, both receive a discount. It’s our way of saying thank you and encouraging wellness in the community.

How can people book an appointment? You can call us on 0439 989 511 or book online via our website.

ULTRASOUND FIRST TRIMESTER

More than just a Nuchal

What is a First Trimester Anatomy Scan? While many are familiar with the Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan performed between 12–14 weeks, a first trimester anatomy scan offers a more detailed look at your baby’s development during this critical stage. Using advanced ultrasound technology, this scan assesses early fetal anatomy, placental position, and maternal structures. How is it different from a Nuchal Translucency scan? The NT scan focuses on measuring the fluid at the back of the baby’s neck to screen for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome. A first trimester anatomy scan goes further examining the

brain, heart, spine, limbs, and abdominal organs. It provides early reassurance about major structural development, even before the traditional 20-week morphology scan. Furthermore, when combined with additional blood tests, it can assess for the risk of developing conditions such as pre-eclampsia in the pregnancy.

Should I have both the NIPT and first trimester anatomy scan? If you want to undertake a screening for chromosomal abnormalities then absolutely. But if you are

not interested in chromosomal screening, the first trimester anatomy scan can still provide a wealth of information on your growing baby.

What are the benefits? Early detection of anatomical differences allows parents and care teams to make timely, informed decisions. At Saige Ultrasound, our obstetricians ensure your results are provided directly to you as soon as possible and can guide the need for further testing, early referrals to specialists, or help plan safe, supportive care throughout pregnancy.

GambleAware Lifeline rth ast PROGRAM

The Lifeline North Coast GambleAware Program offers free and confidential support services across the region, from Laurieton to Tweed Heads, to address this growing issue. This local support is critical in a state where gambling harm is alarmingly prevalent. According to the NSW Gambling Survey 2024, commissioned by the NSW Responsible Gambling Fund, 1 in 10 adults in NSW are experiencing, or at risk of gambling harm. The NSW Auditor-General’s 2025 report found there are 13.3 gaming machines per 1,000 adults in NSW which is significantly higher than the national average of 8.3 (excluding WA). This saturation is widely recognised as a key contributor to gambling harm across the state.

More specifically, research by the Australian Institute of Family Studies highlights that young men are particularly vulnerable to gambling-related harm. Among men aged 18–34 who gamble, 53% were classified as being at risk of harm, compared to 38% of women in the same age group. A University of Melbourne study further reports that simulated sports betting among young men has surged, with 8.7% of male sports gamblers identified as high-risk in 2022 and

Gambling harm is more common and more complex than many people realise. It does not just a ect individuals; its impact ripples through families, friendships, workplaces, and entire communities. Whether it’s through online gambling, gaming features that simulate be ing, or traditional venues, the effects are real and o en devastating.

that figure continues to rise.

To combat these growing concerns, the Lifeline North Coast GambleAware Program has a dedicated team of qualified financial counsellors, therapeutic counsellors, and peer support workers who work alongside individuals and families to:

• Regain control over gambling behaviours,

• Build financial literacy and repair financial harm

• Address underlying emotional and mental health challenges

With simulated gambling on the rise, exposure is no longer limited to clubs and pubs. Children as young as eleven are now being exposed to gambling-like features through gaming apps, online ads, and in-app purchases. Professionals warn that this early and unregulated exposure may act as a form of grooming for future gambling addiction.

A 2025 report from the Australian Institute of Family Studies corroborates this, stating that nearly 1 in 3 Australians aged 12 to 17 have participated in gambling, rising to 46% among 18 to 19-year-olds. Parents have expressed concern, and 1 in 4 report finding the topic difficult to raise with their children. Further findings from the Royal Children’s Hospital National Child Health Poll show that

39% of Australian parents are concerned about their teen’s gambling behaviours. Yet, 45% have never discussed gambling, and 25% find it difficult to do so.

In response, the GambleAware Program at Lifeline North Coast is focused on communitylevel early intervention and education. We collaborate with a broad range of sectors, including:

• Multicultural Centres (CALD communities), to address gambling where it may be culturally normalised

• Neighbourhood Centres, providing parent education

• RSLs and venues, offering harm minimisation awareness

• Health and mental health services, for clinician and physician education

• Schools and education providers

• Drug and alcohol services, delivering education to staff and clients

• Faith-based organisations and parenting networks

Our qualified Community Engagement Coordinators will co-design tailored presentations, host community events, and share resources through both face-toface outreach and social media campaigns.

THE GAP TEAM

Whether it’s a community workshop, youth talk, or sector-specific training, we’re committed to bringing support where it’s needed most.

FROM LIFELINE NORTH COAST

This August marks National Loneliness Week, a time to pause and reflect on one of Australia’s most widespread yet least visible challenges.

Research shows that 1 in 3 Australians experience loneliness, and for young people aged 16–25, nearly half report feeling persistently disconnected. These aren’t fleeting moments; they’re deep, ongoing experiences that can affect mental health, relationships, and even physical wellbeing. In a world of constant digital connection, many of us feel more isolated than ever. Loneliness doesn’t always look like solitude, it can show up in crowded rooms, busy households, or during endless scrolling. It’s not about being alone; it’s about feeling unseen, unheard, or misunderstood.

So how do we manage loneliness, whether it’s our own or someone else’s?

LONELINESS:

THE QUIET EPIDEMIC AFFECTING 1 IN 3 AUSTRALIANS

Start small. Connection doesn’t have to be big. A quick check-in with a friend, a chat with a neighbour, or a shared meal can shift the tone of your day. Create rituals of connection like a weekly walk, a regular phone call, or a tech-free dinner.

Not sure how to talk to someone who’s feeling lonely? Here are three practical tips to start the conversation:

1. Choose the right moment. Find a calm time when they’re at ease, maybe during a walk or a quiet meal. Talk in a private space. If they’re not ready, let them know you’re here when they are.

2. Reach out with C.A.R.E.

• Connect: Create a safe, judgment-free space

• Ask: Help them feel heard and understood

• Remind: Highlight their strengths and support options

• Empower: Encourage small, manageable

steps forward

3. Focus on empathy, not sympathy. Be present and validate their feelings. Avoid minimising responses like “It could be worse.” Instead, try: “That sounds really hard. I’m here to listen.”

If you’re struggling, know that support is available. Lifeline is proud to sponsor Loneliness Awareness Week 2025, led by Ending Loneliness Together. Their message is clear: #MomentsMatter. Lifeline offers free, confidential support for anyone facing loneliness, mental health challenges, or feelings of overwhelm and distress.

Visit lonelinessawarenessweek.com.au to explore resources and events. And if you need to talk, Lifeline is available 24/7 on 13 11 14. Loneliness is not a personal failure, it’s a human experience, and like all human experiences, it can be eased through empathy, connection, and community.

JED VASSALLO & KOBEY WALSH

SAPPHIRE COASTAL POOLS

Tell us about your background and what inspired the business.

We started our plumbing apprenticeships at the same time and quickly became mates through a shared work ethic. With over 24 years of combined experience across plumbing, pools, and construction, starting our own business felt like a natural progression. Having both run our own companies before, we saw an opportunity to do things differently. We’ve also had the privilege of working with some of the most skilled local tradespeople, whose professionalism has deeply influenced our standards.

What challenges have you faced?

Building trust has been our biggest hurdle, especially in a high-value industry where youth can be mistaken for inexperience. We’ve overcome this by staying consistent, focusing on quality, and letting our work speak for itself. Over time, that dedication has helped us grow a solid reputation.

Jed: For me, success means building a life with purpose, balance, and meaningful connections. It’s not just about career wins but enjoying what you do and maintaining your wellbeing.

Kobey: Success is having the freedom to control your time and live according to your values, not someone else’s. Working in large-scale projects taught me the importance of staying true to yourself. What leadership qualities matter most?

Accountability, consistency, and communication. We lead by example and keep learning from others. Trust is built through action. What was a pivotal career moment?

Taking the leap to start our own business. It was risky but gave us control over our work and client experience. It’s been the most rewarding decision we’ve made.

What sets Sapphire Coastal Pools apart? We’re young, hands-on, and invested in raising expectations. Our trade backgrounds give us a complete understanding of the entire process, not just the final product. We pride ourselves on clean communication, honesty, and relationships built on trust. How do you define success?

Taking the leap to start our own business. It was risky but gave us control over our work and client experience. It’s been the most rewarding decision we’ve made.

How do you stay motivated and balanced?

Our motivation comes from a clear sense of purpose. We set goals and celebrate wins, big or small. Time off is essential to recharge and avoid burnout. Advice for young entrepreneurs? Back yourself and go for it. There’s no perfect time, just start. Be ready to work hard, stay honest, and keep learning. How has your business mindset evolved? We’ve become more confident in making tough decisions and having hard conversations. These used to feel

intimidating, but we now see them as essential to growth.

What role does technology play?

A huge one. We use digital tools like mapping and service locators to plan efficiently, avoid issues, and ensure smooth delivery. It’s all about working smarter.

Any mentors?

Absolutely. Local mentors have been instrumental in shaping our work and leadership. Their support and example helped us build a strong foundation.

How do you give back?

Through local sponsorships, prioritising local trades, and mentoring others. We want to pass on the support we were given.

Future goals?

To be the best in the industry, delivering top-quality work, exceeding expectations, and creating a positive, values-driven workplace.

Common misconception?

That it’s all physical work with no strategy. In reality, there’s a lot of planning and communication involved. As male leaders, people think we’ve got it figured out - we don’t. We’re always learning.

Thanks guys.

BRAEDEN CRONIN

CRO & CO METAL ROOFING

Cwhat inspired you to pursue your current business venture? I have worked in the trade industry for 10 years, trialing different trades. After a couple of years, I found roofing and decided to stick to it. I worked for various roofing companies feeling underappreciated and overworked.

My partner Kirra and I started Cro & Co Metal Roofing aspiring to create a reliable and trustworthy name within the metal roofing industry. Leading from the front modelling integrity, hard work and commitment and with a goal to build an outstanding work culture to support and guide our team both professionally and personally.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when starting or growing your business, and how did you overcome it? Having minimal connections within the local construction industry was challenging! Having to build our network from scratch took commitment - pure hustle! We spent months putting ourselves out there. We were told to compile a list of 50 builders to reach out to, after one week we had emailed and your background and

called over 200 builders! Some of our best relationships to date stem from good old fashion networking – walking into someone’s office and introducing yourself. Slowly building our network, one client at a time, we decided to expand our advertising and build a professional brand. This is when everything really took off.

What differentiates your business from others in your industry? Our attention to detail and outstanding customer journey. We only provide quality work, guaranteeing a lifetime workmanship warranty. We value our clients and their journey with us and we take the time to ensure all our clients are satisfied with our services.

How do you define success, both personally and professionally? Success is built through discipline! A strong daily routine and consistently taking time to reset, reflect and realign with purpose.

What leadership qualities do you believe are essential for success in business today? Transparency. Being open and honest with your team and clients. Being fair by treating people how you would expect to be treated. Discipline, by holding yourself

accountable. How do you stay motivated and maintain a worklife balance? Having clear visions and goals and focusing on what I am aiming to achieve. Time blocking and a killer morning routine (wake up early, hydrate, cold shower, exercise, breath work, breakfast, work) you win the morning you win the day!

We only provide quality work, guaranteeing a lifetime workmanship warranty. We value our clients and their journey with us, and we take the time to ensure all our clients are satisfied with our services.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and young men looking to enter the business world? Don’t let your past define you. You can become the man you want to be with a well-structured plan, clear vision and goals mixed with discipline - you can achieve anything.

Looking ahead, what are your goals or plans for the future of your business? Our goal is to become the most trusted metal roofing company in NSW. We are taking

the time to build and implement systems throughout our entire company to support our vision for growth. The foundations of Cro & Co are strong and ready to continue building! 0416 281 371

HIGHGROVE BATHROOMS COFFS HARBOUR

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired your business venture? I was born in Lithgow, later moving to Tasmania and then Adelaide, following my father’s ventures in mushroom farming. At 25, I moved to Sydney, where I shifted into the bathroom industry while working for Kohler Australia. I moved from manufacturing into retail and worked in several high-end bathroom stores. That eventually brought me to the Gold Coast and then to Coffs Harbour, where I opened this store five years ago with my business partners. Bathroom retail became a passion, I love helping customers realise their bathroom visions affordably. What challenges did you face when starting out, and how did you overcome them? Shortly after opening, COVID hit. It was a tough period, we lost staff, caught COVID ourselves, and nearly had to close. Thankfully, with support from head office, we managed to stay open. My wife stepped in to help run the store and now works full-time, along with our son and my business partner’s son. It became a true family business, which strengthened us.

Success is about finding balance between family and business. With my family involved in the store, it’s vital to leave work at the door when we go home. Giving back to the community is equally important to me.

What sets your business apart from others? We offer stylish, designer bathroom products at affordable prices, with everything on display in a well-designed showroom. Customers can see and touch products before buying, which gives us a strong edge locally. How do you define success? Success is about finding balance between family and business. With my family involved in the store, it’s vital to leave work at the door when we go home. Giving back to the community is equally important to me. What leadership qualities are essential in business today? Lead by example. Don’t expect staff to do anything you wouldn’t. This builds a strong work ethic and a positive workplace culture.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your career? I’ve had setbacks, like being homeless in Sydney and losing a job the day before settling on a house with a newborn, but I never let adversity define me. I faced each challenge with optimism and always came back stronger.

How do you stay motivated and maintain balance? My family keeps me grounded. They’re at the heart of every decision I make. Their wellbeing motivates me to keep building the business.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Stay flexible and open-

minded. Some of the best outcomes come from unexpected changes, like my wife joining the business. Be willing to adapt, work hard, and stay positive through challenges.

What role does innovation play in your business? We’re constantly seeking new, installer-friendly products to improve functionality and quality. Innovation keeps us competitive and relevant in the market.

Who has influenced you most in business? My father. He ran a large mushroom farm, was respected in the community, and taught me the importance of hard work, giving back, and leading with integrity.

How do you support your community? I’m a proud Sawtell Rotary board member and Scout leader. We support schools through basketball donations and sponsor local events like the Putt Bennet Fishing Comp.

What are your future plans? We’re looking to expand along the Mid North Coast and launch new product lines to grow our range and reach.

What’s a common misconception about your industry? That imported products are low quality. We source top-grade items from China, tested and backed by full warranties. We stand behind everything we sell.

Thanks Rod.

What differentiates your business from others in your industry? What truly sets us apart is our genuine passion for going above and beyond to exceed our clients’ expectations. We take pride in listening to each client’s individual needs and working closely with them to achieve the exact look, style, and finish they envision. Every project is treated with the same care and attention we would give if it were being installed in our own home. Whether the job is big or small, we approach it with the same commitment to excellence. Our client reviews speak for themselves. We are dedicated to quality, attention to detail, and delivering outcomes that leave a lasting impression.

online, many people don’t realise how critical proper preparation and execution are to getting it right.

Surface preparation is the most important part of any flooring job. Even the smallest mistakes in measuring, mixing, or curing can completely ruin the final result. Without professional-grade tools and knowledge, a DIY job can quickly turn into a costly mistake.

Turning a dull, ordinary concrete surface into something fresh, stylish, and completely transformed is incredibly rewarding.

How do you define success, both personally and professionally? Personally, success is not about how much money I have in the bank or how many jobs I have completed. It is about the quality time I get to spend with my beautiful wife and two amazing children. Knowing that my hard work allows me to support and provide for them makes me feel truly successful.

Professionally, success comes at the end of a project when I can step back and see the client’s reaction. Turning a dull, ordinary concrete surface into something fresh, stylish, and completely transformed is incredibly rewarding. That genuine “wow” moment from a client is when I know I have done my job right. That feeling of accomplishment is what drives me every day.

What is a common misconception people have about your industry or your role as a male business leader? One of the biggest misconceptions is that epoxy flooring is a simple DIY project. While anyone can buy a kit from a hardware store or

Another misconception is that our trade is purely physical, but there is a lot of planning, creativity, and problem-solving involved. It’s not just about putting product on the floor, it’s about delivering a seamless, durable, and beautiful finish that truly lasts.

Can you share a pivotal moment or decision that significantly impacted your career? Bringing on an associate agent has been one of the most pivotal decisions in my career at McGrath. It’s allowed me to elevate the service we provide to existing clients while expanding our capacity to help even more people achieve their real estate goals. Choosing the right person for the role was crucial, and Jacob has exceeded every expectation. His drive, commitment, and maturity are rare qualities in someone so young, and he’s been instrumental in the success of this transition. Together, we’re building on McGrath’s standard of excellence and delivering outstanding results.

WILL BAILEY

What values or principles are most important to you in running your business? At McGrath, honesty and integrity are a given, but I believe my greatest strength is being relatable. I want people to feel at ease with me and know they can trust me. Being born and bred here means that, even though I’m young, I have a deep understanding of the area and its dynamics. My role in real estate feels like running my own business within McGrath, allowing me to help people achieve their goals and contribute meaningfully to their journeys, something I find incredibly rewarding and inspiring every day.

Are there any mentors or role models who have influenced your journey? John McGrath has been a key role model in my journey. His focus on continuous improvement and belief in hard work align with my values. I’ve also been fortunate to receive his direct guidance, showing how much the company invests in its people. My principal, Troy Pinder, inspires me daily with his leadership and drive, while Rebecca Harrington has taught me the importance of honesty, integrity, and keeping your word. Together, these mentors have shaped how I approach my career, and I feel grateful to have such strong influences guiding me.

SHAYNE LONG

SALES AGENT | PARTNER

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue your current business venture? I love the career path I’ve chosen in real estate. After years in corporate sales and running my own business for seven years, I’ve found a role at McGrath that feels like my own business within a business. JACOB MONAGHAN

ASSOCIATE AGENT

How has your approach to business evolved over the years? My approach to business has evolved through study, experience, and learning what truly matters. It began in high school with Business Studies for my HSC, giving me a foundation in marketing, structure, and finance. That theory became real when I managed fast food stores on the Mid North Coast, juggling rosters, costs, service, and leading teams under pressure. It taught me the value of systems, performance, and, most importantly, people. At McGrath, the stakes are higher, relationships deeper, and success comes from trust and long-term value. Passion, clarity, and consistency are what drive results in this business.

TROY PINDER

DIRECTOR | PRINCIPAL

JOSHUA ALLEN

ASSOCIATE AGENT

How do you stay motivated and maintain a work-life balance? Motivation is part of my DNA, it’s not something I need to actively maintain. I see each day as a chance to create something meaningful and stay energised by visualising my goals and moving toward them with purpose. That energy is often contagious, inspiring those around me. Work-life balance, however, is something I’m still learning. Loving what I do means it rarely feels like work, and I tend to throw myself in completely. Meeting Troy Pinder and joining McGrath was transformative, with a culture that values health, family, and balance, qualities I deeply admire and strive to embrace.

COFFS COAST & NAMBUCCA VALLEY

What differentiates your business from others in your industry? For me, McGrath is all about culture. It’s about surrounding yourself with good people, driven, honest, and passionate about what they do. We’re not just here to sell property; we’re here to build trust, deliver results, and make a real difference in people’s lives. As the Director and Principal, I encourage our team to treat this like their own business within a business. That ownership changes everything, it breeds accountability, pride, and success. With McGrath’s systems and support behind you, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. If you’re ready to take control of your career and want to see how far you can go, let’s talk.

JOE WAKELIN

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

How do you define success, both personally and professionally? For me, success is about impact, both personally and professionally. It’s not just achieving goals but knowing I’ve made a meaningful difference in people’s lives. In real estate, that means guiding clients through lifechanging decisions with honesty, care, and clarity. At McGrath, success is also about alignment with a culture that values excellence, integrity, and balance. Personally, I define success as living with purpose, staying present for family and friends, and continuing to grow every day. True success is when your work inspires others and brings you fulfilment beyond the numbers.

LOURENS CLOETE

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue your current business venture? I started at SGA 11 years ago cutting metal, gradually working my way up to fabricating windows and doors. I was later offered the role of Production Manager, where I became deeply passionate about overseeing projects from order to installation. Four years ago, I took a leap of faith and purchased the business. What differentiates your business from others in your industry? Service and quality are at the heart of what we do. Whether we’re working on a multi-million-dollar home, a commercial development like The Shoreline, or a one-off renovation, every project receives the same attention to detail. We pride ourselves on delivering consistently high standards, no matter the size of the job.

How do you stay motivated and maintain a work-life balance? I believe in having something to look forward to outside of work, whether it’s travel, a weekend away, or live music. We work to live, not the other way around. Taking time off helps me recharge and return more focused and productive. I also value mental health and lean on a network of local business owners when I need support.

What values or principles are most important to you in running your business? Looking after our team is a top priority. Each person is a vital piece of the SGA puzzle, and we aim to make them feel valued. High staff turnover can be damaging to any business, which is why we invest in our team. Many of our staff have been with SGA for decades, including one who just retired after more than 30 years. That kind of experience is truly priceless.

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue your current business venture?

My background in business has always been very physical labour based. I was a concreter for 5 years out of high school, then went into crane, dogman and stage rigging. A friend got me into tree work about 7 years ago and I’ve never looked back. The birth of my daughter 2 years ago was the inspiration to start my own arboriculture company.

rectify and adjust, completing the job to exceptional quality.

How do you define success, both personally and professionally? Good question. I would say by not only being accomplished at something, but by loving doing it! We all like to make money and succeed in our careers but if you can enjoy what you do while improving your skills and achieve excellent standards in your work, that’s what I would define as success across the board.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when starting or growing your business, and how did you overcome it? All I can say is never buy a secondhand woodchipper unless you are a mechanic... although now she (woodchipper) runs like a dream, it was very costly in the first year of business.   What differentiates your business from others in your industry? I believe attention to detail and accountability are CTS’s highest attributes and create an industry difference for our family run company. I am the owner but also team leader and head arborist, therefore the onus is on me to lead our team to the highest standards, to never leave a job unsatisfactory and if things dont’ go as planned to

How do you give back to your community or support fellow entrepreneurs? CTS produces a monthly newsletter with great tree safety and weather advice for tenants and property owners. With carefully curated latest tree news and local council weather/ flood warnings and environmental campaigns; it is a very good one stop shop for important safety tips. The newsletter features a local business shoutout section, where each month a different small business is featured with images and information. AIR CONDITIONING ASHBURY

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue your current business venture? We have both been in the industry for over 20 years and have extensive knowledge in all aspects of domestic and light commercial air conditioning. While we may be midway through our working career, we could see an opportunity to leave the comfort of management in our previous role and get back on the tools and utilise our skills.

How do you stay motivated and maintain a work-life balance? This is easy. Delivering for our family is our motivation, we both leave work at the door when we get home. We have young families and make sure they get our full attention when we are home. We also enjoy a game of golf and try to play

as often as our schedule allows. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and young men looking to enter the business world? Don’t be afraid, if you feel you have an idea or can bring an alternative to the market in your given industry go for it. Most businesses fail within the first 12-18 months, set goals during this period and communicate - communication is the key to any business.

What role does innovation or technology play in your business strategy? Technology plays a massive role. We are both on the road and running a mobile office these days, and with this in mind we have been able to utilise professional software and solutions allowing a professional approach to any client interaction.

What values or principles are most important to you in running your business? Communication. At Ashbury Air Conditioning we want to be known as the

company who returns calls, shows up on time and communicates. We offer our clients solutions and treat their home as if it was our own, I believe this approach has helped with the referrals and recommendations we receive.

Looking ahead, what are your goals or plans for the future of your business?

We have recently been awarded Fujitsu Partnership Status and are very excited to have such a premium brand back our business. With this backing and our continued approach to delivering for our clients we will be looking to employ some apprentices in the next 6-12 months. This will allow us to train the next generation and increase the clients we service.

I’m Daniel Wilson, Licensee of PURE Property Management Mid North Coast. We’re a dedicated commercial property and asset management company, laser-focused on the Mid North Coast and backed by a strong national network.

Our growing local team services clients from Port Macquarie through to Coffs Harbour, Grafton, and everywhere in between. What sets PURE apart is our unique model – a collection of locally operated offices, each staffed by passionate professionals with deep community connections and a strong understanding of the local market. While our day-to-day operations are regionally focused, our reach is national. We’re connected to a wide-ranging tenant database across Australia, which we engage with regularly and proactively – giving our clients the best of both worlds: local expertise with national strength. How does your focus on property management differ from other agencies? At PURE, we specialise exclusively in commercial property management – it’s all we do. This singular focus ensures every detail is handled

with precision, giving our clients peace of mind and maximising returns on their investment.

We believe great property management starts with great relationships. We work closely with tenants to help them succeed and thrive within their lease, which in turn minimises vacancy and maximises asset value for our landlords.

Our mission is simple: to help every stakeholder benefit from high-quality, hands-on commercial property management. Our clients often tell us they appreciate our proactive, responsive approach and the confidence it gives them in their investment.

What does treating clients “as people, not numbers” look like in your day-to-day operations?

At PURE, it’s all about people. We’re committed to building long-term, meaningful relationships, not transactional ones. That means being present, being responsive, and truly understanding the needs of our clients, tenants, and team.

Everyone we work with is an individual, with their own definition of success. We take the time to listen, to understand goals and priorities, and to support them in achieving those outcomes. It’s a mindset that runs through everything we

do – and to us, it just makes PURE sense. What specific services do you offer to make property ownership stress-free for your clients?

We believe property ownership should feel effortless. At PURE, every client has a single point of contact – someone who knows their property inside and out, and is always just a phone call or email away.

We prioritise clear, consistent communication and treat every property as if it were our own. From maintenance coordination to lease administration and proactive tenancy management, we handle it all – so our clients can focus on what matters most to them, with the confidence their asset is in capable hands.

Thanks Daniel.

PAT CONAGHAN MP

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR COWPER, SHADOW ASSISTANT TREASURER, SHADOW MINISTER FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES

I’m incredibly proud to have been elected for a third parliamentary term to represent the people of the Cowper electorate on our beautiful Mid North Coast. The past six years as your local Federal MP have been the privilege of my career and a responsibility that I will never take for granted.

As parliament resumes this month and the new Government is sworn in, I will also be taking on a new role as the Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services. It is a great honour to have the faith of the Party Leadership Team and to be given the opportunity to lead these portfolios that directly impact all Australians, but particularly our business community. As a small business owner myself for 18 years prior to my first election, I know the pressures that businesses face each day, and I know that these pressures have only increased in recent years.

It has been a long time since a National Party Member was given the opportunity to hold a financial or economic portfolio, and I acknowledge the weight of that, and what that means, not just for the National Party but Regional Australia as a whole.

This is an opportunity to ensure that Australia’s financial policy truly considers the needs of the thirty percent of our country that do not live in the city. I will not take that responsibility lightly. Despite the new titles, my primary priority will remain our community. I will continue to represent each of you in the halls of Parliament and will continue to fight for what you need and deserve.

My mobile offices are back with new locations every month, so take the opportunity to stop by for a chat, let me know your ideas or areas of concern. I look forward to working together to get the best outcomes for our community.

That vision came to life with Stay Ready Performance, a business built on strong coaching philosophies and a passion for helping people become the best version of themselves.

One of the biggest challenges Dan faced was learning how to run a business, not just coach. “There’s more to it than squats and bench press, that’s for sure,” he says with a laugh. Overcoming that learning curve has been a journey, and it continues to this day.

For Dan, success is simple: “Being able to work every day with my wife in a business we love, employing amazing people like Josh and Hannah, and making a real difference in people's lives, that's success.”

A pivotal moment? Moving into their dream space at the Key Employment building. “That’s when I knew we could thrive, even in a flooded industry,” Dan says. Dan’s advice for aspiring business owners: “Be passionate. It makes the tough times easier. Learn from the setbacks and invest in a good accountant!”

ACCOUNTING BASICS: THE PROFIT AND LOSS AND BALANCE SHEET REPORTS

Understanding your finances is a vital part of running your business. But getting down into the nitty gritty of the business accounts isn’t every entrepreneur’s top skill. If you are new to accounting, or simply want to expand your knowledge, we can help explain the foundational reports.

The profit and loss report and the balance sheet are both key reports when it comes to getting in control of your business’s financial health.

What’s a profit and loss statement?

Your profit and loss statement is commonly called your P&L, but is also referred to as your income statement or statement of earnings. It’s a full breakdown of the business revenue (money coming in as sales and other business income) and your expenditure (direct costs, overheads, expenses and other costs), net of GST.

As a business, you obviously want to turn a profit and make money from your venture. Careful observation of your P&L allows you to track your revenues and expenses over a set period of time. You can then look back over the period and see exactly where you’re

making money, and where you’re losing money. The more you make, and the less you lose, the greater your profits will be at year-end.

The P&L statement is good for:

Giving you a breakdown of all revenues and relevant costs and expenses

Showing the profit and loss figures over a set period of time

Summing up your profit and loss for the period to gauge if you’re profitable.

What’s the balance sheet?

The balance sheet gives you a snapshot of the business financial health at a given point in time, based on the following accounting equation: ‘Equity = Assets - Liabilities’

The balance sheet shows you the:

Assets (the things the business owns, including cash)

Liabilities (the things the business owes other people)

Equity (retained earnings plus the funds you originally invested as an owner/shareholders)

Unlike the P&L – which shows you the revenues and expenditure over the course of a given historic period – the balance sheet is best seen as a ‘screenshot’ of your current

finances. In a nutshell, it shows you what the business is worth on paper right now, based on the current numbers in your accounts. So it’s a vital tool in your accounting toolbox. The balance sheet is helpful for:

Assessing the current financial position of the business

Providing evidence of your financial position to banks, lenders and investors

Giving potential buyers an idea of the business’s tangible net asset value, if you plan to sell up.

If you’d like to know more about the basics of your business accounts, we can help. We’ll be happy to run you through your latest management or statutory accounts and explain exactly what each report means – and how it reflects your current performance as a business.

Get in touch to find out more about your accounts.

CHERIE AND BRAD TREGENT

DRIVING GROWTH AT SIGNARAMA COFFS HARBOUR

Just over three years ago, Cherie and Brad Tregent took the reins of Signarama Co s Harbour, bringing with them a fresh vision, a hands-on approach, and a deep commitment to the local business community.

After relocating from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the move marked a homecoming for Cherie, who grew up in the Coffs Coast region. For the Tregents, it was more than a lifestyle change, it was the start of an exciting new chapter.

Since taking over, they’ve made it their mission to grow the business with a strong focus on professionalism, quality, and service. Their complimentary backgrounds have proven to be a powerful combination, allowing them to run the business with both creativity and precision.

Brad brings over 30 years of experience from founding and operating a successful plastic

fabrication business in Brookvale. His depth of technical knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes have been instrumental in streamlining operations and expanding Signarama’s capabilities. From complex installations to bespoke signage solutions, Brad ensures that every project is executed to the highest standard.

Cherie, on the other hand, draws from a rich background in sales, marketing, and relationship management. Her strategic mindset and passion for connecting with people have played a key role in driving customer engagement and developing long-term partnerships. At the heart of their approach is a commitment to building genuine relationships and delivering on every

promise they make. From the initial idea to the final installation, their ongoing goal is to craft a signage experience that’s seamless, engaging, and exceeds expectations, turning every project into a story of trust, service, expertise, and results.

Together, Cherie and Brad have cultivated a talented team of professionals who take genuine pride in their work. They know that behind every great result is a group of individuals working hard behind the scenes. They are passionate about the signage industry and see it as a space of endless creativity and opportunity. Their shared goal is simple yet powerful: to help local businesses stand out, grow, and thrive - one sign at a time.

WORLD PREPARED:

NAVIGATING YEAR 11 AND YEAR 12 PATHWAYS FOR THE NSW HSC

Do you have a child in Year 10 or even Year 9? This is an exciting time of year when students begin to explore their interests and strengths as they start thinking about course selections for Years 11 and 12.

As your child approaches this important stage in their schooling, the decisions they make now will help shape their future and determine their focus for the next two years. The New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC) is a major milestone, and choosing the right subjects and pathways is key to a successful and rewarding experience.

Here’s some advice to help parents of Year 10 students support their child through this exciting, and at times challenging, transition.

1. Having choice is good, but making subject choices can be difficult. The many HSC subjects can be overwhelming, especially when students must total 12 units or are in acceleration. Encourage your child to choose subjects they’re genuinely interested in and that match their strengths. Writing down their choices helps with discussion and clarity. Usually, studying 12 units is best unless they have a strong interest or ability in extension courses.

2. Listen to your child’s passions and areas of interest as it is their study pathway for two years. This is perhaps the most important piece of advice. Your child will be dedicating a significant amount of time and effort to these

subjects. When students are engaged and passionate about what they’re learning, they’re more likely to excel and enjoy the process. Sit down with your child and genuinely listen to their ideas, even if they seem unconventional or different from what you might have chosen. Their interests could lead to unexpected and rewarding pathways.

3. If they have an interest and they are aiming for an apprenticeship or for university study, what subjects should they do? If your child has a clear post-school goal whether university, an apprenticeship, TAFE, or work this should guide their subject choices. Research any prerequisite subjects for university courses or recommended subjects for apprenticeships. For example, some degrees require specific maths or science, while certain trades benefit from VET courses offered in the HSC.

4. Use the Curriculum Handbook for a guide on courses, assessments, and major work requirements. Your school’s Curriculum Handbook is an invaluable resource. It provides detailed information on each course, including content, assessment requirements, and any major work components. Encourage your child to read the descriptions of subjects they are considering. Understanding the workload and assessment types can help them make informed decisions and manage their time effectively. They should avoid choosing a course just because of friendships or because an older sibling took it.

Education Update

with

PRINCIPAL, BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE

5. Attend curriculum information sessions and sit down with your child and discuss subjects required/or they want to study. Schools usually hold information sessions for Year 10 students and parents about subject selections for Years 11 and 12. Make every effort to attend. These sessions offer a chance to hear from teachers, the Year Coordinator, and Career Pathways staff, and to ask questions for a clearer understanding of the options. Afterwards, sit down with your child for a final discussion. This helps ensure their voice is heard, you can offer informed guidance, and they can submit their preferred choices.

6. Have a backup, because sometimes there is a timetable clash, so what else would they choose? Even with careful planning, subject choices can sometimes cause timetable clashes or courses may not run due to low numbers. It’s wise to have a backup plan. Discuss alternative subjects your child would be happy to study. This helps reduce stress if their first choices aren’t possible.

Please contact the school early to discuss options if needed.

Giving your child the chance to explore their strengths and interests will help narrow down their subject choices. This is part of our Excelsior Journey, culminating in graduation as world prepared valedictorians, a proud moment for families, students, and staff as they begin their next chapter as confident young adults.

NOT ALL SUPERHEROES WEAR CAPES SOME CARRY CLIPBOARDS, PACK LUNCHES, OR HOLD LITTLE HANDS!

This month at 3 Bears Cottage, we’re shining a spotlight on the everyday heroes in our lives - those who give, care, and connect to make our communities brighter. Our July theme celebrated volunteering and community spirit through three exciting initiatives that bring real value to our children, families, educators and the wider community. Superheroes of Kindness: Honouring Our Volunteers

As part of our focus on gratitude and giving back, the children are preparing care packages and baked goods to deliver to local volunteers during community excursions.

As part of our focus on gratitude and giving back, the children prepared care packages and baked goods to deliver to local volunteers during

community excursions. Visits included stops at the fire brigade, volunteer-run op shops, the RSPCA, community gardens, and aged care homes supported by volunteers. These experiences not only nurture empathy and social awareness in our children but also help them feel connected to something greater than themselves - the shared values of community, kindness, and contribution.

Families are Heroes Too

Parents and carers are the quiet achievers of our community, juggling work, life, and love while raising little humans. In recognition of their ongoing care and effort, we hosted a free community movement class in the beautiful grounds of The Link. This time

to pause, connect, and breathe together offers more than just physical movement; it strengthens our sense of belonging, supports wellbeing, and reminds families that they are deeply appreciated and supported.

The 3 Bears Free Community Market

Our Free Market was a celebration of sharing, sustainability, and community. With stalls offering pre-loved clothing, toys, handcrafted items, and a “give and take” table, this event invited everyone to participate regardless of budget or background. For our children, it was an opportunity to understand generosity and see community collaboration in action. For families and educators, it’s a reminder of the strength found in unity, resourcefulness, and mutual support.

These three initiatives are more than just activities - they’re lived experiences that shape values, inspire gratitude, and build deeper community connections across generations.

SMALL BUSINESS

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of starting something from scratch and watching it grow.

Whether it’s a café, a ute full of tools with a logo on the door, or an online store started at the kitchen bench – small business is where thought bubbles become action. It’s where ambition gets its hands dirty and where risks are taken in the hope of reward.

Running a small business is never easy. It takes grit, sacrifice, and no shortage of sleepless nights. But for many, it’s also the most rewarding thing they’ll ever do. It’s the joy of employing your first staff member, the pride of solving a customer’s problem, and the satisfaction of building something that contributes to your community.

Right now, though, small business owners across the state and especially in regional NSW, are doing it incredibly tough.

Interest rates are biting. Families are tightening their belts, and when customers spend less, businesses feel the pinch. Energy prices are soaring, insurance premiums are up, wages, rents, and compliance costs keep climbing,

and that’s before you even get to the challenge of finding the right staff.

These pressures aren’t theoretical. I hear from local butchers, retailers, tradies, and tourism operators who are working harder than ever just to keep the lights on. Some are dipping into savings to make payroll. Others are questioning whether they can go on at all.

In the midst of this, it’s incredibly disappointing to see the Minns Labor Government shut down the Business Connect program – a service that’s helped thousands of small business owners across NSW with tailored, one-on-one support.

PLAY

sends the wrong message at the worst possible time.

Business Connect wasn’t just a handout –it was practical, professional advice in areas like digital marketing, financial planning, and business resilience.

Business Connect wasn’t just a handout – it was practical, professional advice in areas like digital marketing, financial planning, and business resilience. The kind of advice that can turn a struggling business around or help a good one become great. Axing this program

Let’s be clear – society crumbles without small business. They create jobs, spark competition, and give our main streets their character. They sponsor the local footy team and donate prizes to the school raffle. They’re not just part of the economy – they’re part of the community. We should be doing everything we can to support them, not pulling the rug out from under them. That means easing cost pressures, reducing red tape, and ensuring programs like Business Connect remain in place.

If we want a thriving economy, resilient communities, and opportunities for the next generation, we need to back the small business heroes who take the leap every day. They don’t ask for much – just a fair go and a bit of support when times are tough.

SCU GRADUATION

A CELEBRATION OF RESILIENCE AND IMPACT

More than 200 smiling graduates crossed the stage at the recent Southern Cross University Co s Harbour graduation. e event brought together a vibrant community of determined, resilient and inspiring students, whose journeys to graduation reflect dedication and impact.

Aparticular highlight was the presentation of the Chancellor’s Medal to Dr Allyson Wilson, a mental health nurse and educator who previously lived on the Coffs Coast.

The Chancellor’s Medal is Southern Cross University’s highest accolade for an outstanding thesis. Allyson’s PhD research offers vital insights into trauma-informed care practices within acute mental health environments. Her work is influencing policy and practice at a state level and beyond. She describes receiving the Chancellor’s Medal as both humbling and surreal.

“It still feels like I’m an imposter, like maybe they got the name wrong. But really, I see this as a shared achievement. My family, supervisors and peers all deserve a slice of this,” said Dr Wilson.

She balanced full-time work, family, carer responsibilities and the profound challenge of supporting her father through a terminal illness, all while completing a rigorous doctoral journey.

“My supervisors weren’t just focused on the

thesis; they walked the journey with me,” said Dr Wilson. “Their empathy, flexibility and deep understanding got me through some very difficult times.”

Dr Wilson now contributes to mental health education through a conjoint role as a lecturer and hospital educator with Southern Cross University and the Gold Coast University Hospital. She teaches in the field of mental health nursing and is in the process of developing further research projects.

healthcare settings.

Titled Mechanisms Influencing Speaking Up Behaviours in the Presence of Witnessed Error Within the Medical Hierarchy, his research has been an eye-opening and personal journey.

“I feel proud, relieved, and more determined than ever to keep challenging the structures that make silence seem safer than truth,” he said.

Rodney credits his supervisors for their rigorous support.

“They pushed me to sharpen my thinking, question my assumptions, and find my voice. It wasn’t always comfortable, but it was always growth,” he says.

Another honourable graduate is Rodney Peadon, whose PhD thesis explored the silence that often surrounds medical errors within

(Left to right) PhD Graduates Allyson Wilson, Melissa Tan, Diana Hernandez, Kate Senior, Rebecca Lipscombe, (behind) Rodney Peadon, Kyasingmong Marma.

PhD Graduates (left) Melissa Tan and (right) Bec Lipscombe

After years of hard work, Rodney is heading off on a European adventure with loved ones.

“It’s time to celebrate, unwind, and make new memories with the people who kept me going.”

PhD graduate Rebecca Lipscombe spent her studies investigating one of the ocean’s most misunderstood apex predators: the white shark.

Her thesis, Insight into the trophic ecology and ecophysiology of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in eastern Australian waters, uses biochemical tracers to understand how juvenile white sharks eat, grow and interact with their environment.

“White sharks aren’t the mindless eating machines portrayed in the media, they’re adaptable, and maybe even a little bit fussy in their meal choice.”

Bec’s research sheds light on how diet and foraging behaviours may shift with environmental change, providing crucial data for shark conservation. Bec now applies her scientific expertise to invasive species management with Local Land Services in Northern NSW.

Melissa Tan also received her testamur, with her research focusing on how climate change is reshaping Australia’s fisheries.

Her thesis, Investigating climate change impacts on whiting (Sillaginidae) off eastern Australia, uses experimental and isotopic techniques to track the resilience and movement of key fish species.

Melissa now works with the Marine Wildlife

Team at NSW National Parks and Wildlife, where she contributes to projects focused on marine reptiles and mammals across the state. She also maintains her academic connection as a Research Assistant with Southern Cross University’s National Marine Science Centre, assisting with lab work on a variety of marine research projects.

Melissa says she’s deeply grateful for the support and facilities at the National Marine Science Centre.

“I had access to the flow-through seawater system that draws directly from Charlesworth Bay,” she said.

“This infrastructure was essential for my research with live animals, I couldn’t have conducted much of my work without it.

“I’d love to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been on this journey with me, my supervisors, fellow students, staff, friends and family. Their encouragement meant everything,” she said.

Kate Senior dedicated her PhD years to studying the biology and ecology of the Australian marine snail. Her thesis, Fishery Biology and Ecology of the Marine Snail, Turbo militaris, deepens scientific understanding of the species to inform fisheries management.

“One of the most interesting takeaways was discovering how small the size at maturity is, and how dramatically growth rates vary across

the species’ range,” said Kate.

Kate expressed gratitude for the University’s strong sense of community.

“We were all very close-knit, which made the experience immersive and enriching,” she said.

“‘Little by little, a little becomes a lot.’ That mindset really carried me through. It’s a reminder that even the smallest steps forward, taken consistently, can lead to something truly big.”

Jonathan ‘Jono’ Freeman, the University’s 2024 Alumnus of the Year and founder of Club Active, delivered the graduation’s occasional address.

The former Coffs Coast resident’s mission is to help Australians age actively through personalised programs delivered by allied health professionals.

“What gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing that we can change people’s lives,” Jono says.

Having grown up just south of Coffs Harbour, the St John Paul College graduate went on to play rugby league at the semi-professional level.

Are you or someone you know a Southern Cross University Alumnus? Nominations are now open for the University’s Alumni Impact Awards. For more details, head to www.scu. edu.au/alumni-impact-awards/

BUY OR RENT ON THE COFFS COAST? KEY PROS & CONS TO CONSIDER

With its stunning beaches, relaxed coastal lifestyle and increasing popularity, the Coffs Coast continues to attract homebuyers and renters alike. But is it better to buy or rent in this thriving coastal market? Here’s some of the key pros and cons to help guide your decision.

BUYING – PROS

Capital Growth – Property values on the Coffs Coast have seen strong long-term growth, offering good potential for capital gains.

Stability – Ideal for families or professionals wanting to settle, build roots and enjoy a fantastic lifestyle.

Freedom to Renovate – As a homeowner, you can personalise or improve your property to suit your taste and increase value.

Rental Income Potential – Investment properties in sought-after areas like Sawtell, Jetty, Northern Beaches etc. can generate strong rental returns.

BUYING – CONS

High Upfront & Ongoing Costs – Stamp duty, legal fees, maintenance, council rates and mortgage repayments can add up quickly.

Less Flexibility – Selling a property takes time, and unexpected changes (e.g. work relocation) can be challenging.

Market Risks – While prices generally trend upward, interest rate shifts and economic changes can affect short-term value and loan repayments.

Responsibility – Maintenance, repairs and insurance are all your responsibility as a property owner.

RENTING – PROS

Flexibility – Great for those not ready to settle or wanting to try different suburbs without the commitment of ownership.

Lower Upfront Costs – Just a bond and initial rent gets you started, no need for large deposits, stamp duty or loan approvals.

No Maintenance Hassles – Property upkeep falls to the landlord, saving time and unexpected costs.

Cash Flow & Investment Choice – Renting may free up funds for travel, savings or investing (rentvesting) elsewhere.

RENTING – CONS

Rising Rents – Demand for rentals on the Coffs Coast remains high, pushing prices up, particularly in lifestyle suburbs.

No Equity Gained – Rent is an ongoing expense with no ownership or capital growth.

Limited Control – Restrictions on pets, renovations or customisation often apply. Uncertainty – Lease terms can end, rents may increase, or landlords might sell, creating housing instability.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Buying is ideal for those seeking long-term stability and wealth-building, but it comes with higher financial commitment and less flexibility.

Renting suits those prioritising lifestyle mobility and lower short-term costs as well as saving for a deposit or rentvesting.

Whichever path you’re considering, the Coffs Coast property market offers fantastic options and lifestyle opportunities.
