Welcome to the December issue of Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS.

erry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a safe new year. A huge shout out to the amazing local businesses

who so kindly helped us with this year’s very first Christmas feast cover. The Big Oyster on Hastings River Drive, Urban Grain Bakery, Cassegrain Wines, Holy Cow Butchers and of course Kenny Little’s Fruit and Veg. Make sure this year when purchasing your Christmas lunch and dinner treats you support our local businesses when you can. We all know what a trying 18 months it has been, especially for our small local businesses, so our advice this Christmas and Holiday season is Shop Local. On the cover, to tie into this Christmas edition’s shop local theme, our cover star is Shane Dean. Shane and his wife Kellie own and

run Holy Cow Butchers out at the Timbertown Shopping Centre located in Wauchope. It’s very much worth the trip out to visit their shop for innovative and delicious cuts of meat. Inside this edition, well where do I start?! A huge shout out to Elke from Mid North Social who has put together our very first gig guide. Check it out on pages 62 and 63 – December is definitely a month that’s jam packed full of live entertainment at the many amazing venues across the greater Port Macquarie area.

Make sure this year when purchasing your CHRISTMAS LUNCH AND DINNER TREATS you support our local businesses when you can.

Make sure you check out the interview with Scott Coman, new owner of the Royal Hotel in Kew. Scott and his team have just completed

extensive renovations on this historic hotel and have really outdone themselves. Now over 130 years old, this heritage pub is brand new and a must visit. The much anticipated official Port Macquarie Monopoly game is here just in time for Christmas. You can purchase the game from Billabong Zoo, Hello Koalas, Urban Grain or at Settlement City shopping centre.

We’d like to finish by thanking all our advertisers and contributors, and especially you our readers – whether you are locals or visitors to our lovely town. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and here’s looking forward to a bigger and better 2022!

hane you are the proud When I reflect owner of Holy Cow Butchers on my past, I in Wauchope, can you tell us was so lucky to where you grew up and how spend time as a kid you came to call Wauchope either on the farm, home? going to the local I grew up in the Central West region of NSW livestock sales or in Forbes. Great little country town that has been affected by the floods lately. Something spending time in our that we all learned to live with there, floods shops to help the to us were just part of growing up. In 1990 family out. we had nine floods in one year. As with every young person growing up in a small community, the thoughts were there to get out and see the world when you were old enough. With a family that had been involved in the meat industry for a long time, I was given some great opportunities to go and learn about our industry from a lot of different aspects. To cut a long story short, the path led me to my wonderful partner Kellie who was a Wauchope girl. Our love and passion for food was definitely a catalyst for both of us and our business, plus both our families had a passion as business owners in their local communities. Wauchope for me personally has that feeling of community and that is something we both love. You’re a fourth generation butcher, tell us about your family and how you got into the industry. It was one of those situations as a kid where you didn’t stand a chance of anything else. My great Grandfather was a Butcher/ Smallgoodsman in Switzerland and my Pop was a boner, slaughterman and butcher. Both my parents (even my Mum who was a gifted theatre nurse in her younger It was my Mum years) ended up being who realised drawn back into the realm that I had an eye for of the meat industry, she detail and love of the could handle herself in industry and starting any part of the industry. It makes it even better when you have someone with an absolutely incredible knowledge of flavours, cooking methods and ideas that Kel possesses to complement everything that we put together.

You have been taught by some very interesting and talented butchers along you way. How did this all come about and what is something you learnt in your training that you still stick to today? I remember being sent to a butcher shop on the North Shore in Sydney by my parents for a few months of training when I just about turned 18. Spent my day rolling around 200kgs of Pork for Christmas Orders. Thought I did a great job only to come in the next morning to find everything I rolled cut and thrown into a massive tub with the words “pas assez bon” which I loosely translates in French “not good enough”. This was the day I met my mentor and one of my teachers Pierre. He was one massive Frenchman with hands like hams, the voice of an angel and an OCD like no other for absolute perfection. When I look back now 20 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

I cannot thank this gentle giant of a man enough. He spent the next two years on and off showing me that Butchery is not just about slapping meat on a tray and throwing it into a bag and giving it to the customer. In his words, you eat with your eyes and your customer is the person you want to make happy and content with what they have purchased. He would always tell me, “you get dressed up to go out to catch a nice Mademoiselle, you need to dress the meat up like it’s going out.” That little bit of effort goes a long way. There are honestly so many people that shared their knowledge with me, I was truly blessed. As mentioned, you and Kellie own the Holy Cow Butchers in Wauchope, what do you enjoy the most about owning and running the butchery? We both had our visions from the start, support the local community that supports you. We are both from family backgrounds

very similar in a business sense. Both our sets of parents started a business from scratch in a small community. We both grew up seeing how hard our parents worked to keep it going, the commitment needed and how rewarding it is personally to be able to support the local people that support you. We are very lucky that we have formed some absolutely great relationships with growers as well. Something that we are both passionate about is that some of the growers who supply our stock were dealing with our parents back in the late 70’s and it has now come down to the next generation and it’s still going. That’s a supply chain you don’t see very often these days. It makes it even better when you have someone with an absolutely incredible knowledge of flavours, cooking methods and ideas that Kel possesses to complement everything that we put together. Although in reality with how busy it’s been it might just be a pillow, a blanket and three Panadol! Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you along your journey and getting you where you are today? Firstly for both of us it would have to be our parents, watching them grow and succeed in a local country community and starting a business from scratch gave us both the foundation to believe in what we started. Each other, our faith, trust and love for one another as both partners in life and business. Our families that have supported us through this journey and EVERYONE that has supported us both, whether it be as a customer, supplier or friend. We are forever grateful and humble for the support you have shown us over the last few years. What’s in store for the butchery and yourselves over the next few years? We have so much more we would love to do. We both have a wealth of knowledge in our respective areas that we would love to be able to teach and share with people. With it getting busier every day, finding that balance between work and life will be a priority for sure. However we both have some great ideas for the future that we are working on that will make life easier for our customers and give them something that’s absolutely delicious that’s not currently offered in the local area. Stay tuned for that one, we know you will love it. Thanks Shane. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

Do you have any goals on the horizon for the business? It’s a big goal of mine to open my own photography studio so that I can have my own space for people to come and have indoor sessions. I’d love to be able to offer indoor sessions all year round regardless of weather, in a space that everyone can feel comfortable. I am very lucky that I currently take over my Mum’s spare room for indoor sessions at the moment, but I’d love to be able to have a space to really call my own! PRE RENOVATION 2017

If you have ever been to Kew or travelled from Sydney to Port before the “new” highway was built you would have driven past The Royal Hotel. Built in 1891 the hotel has a long and rich history in the community – now 130 years later new owner Sco and his team have brought the hotel back to life and it’s definitely worth a visit or two.

H

i Scott, congratulations on a stunning renovation of the Royal Hotel Kew. Can you introduce yourself to our readers? Thank you, I’m a local guy who grew up in Kendall a few minutes away from the hotel. I moved away after schooling and pursued a career in engineering before moving home to Port Macquarie with my wife in 2016 and starting a family. We now have two beautiful children. Where did your ideas and passion come from to take over the hotel and rebuild/ restore it? The idea began as an initial discussion with my Mum and Dad about how unique the hotel was in the area, and with the

We were taking a bit of a punt with the hotel as the place was so run down, but certainly the most rewarding part is seeing people returning to the hotel after years of driving past.

The hotel has a very long and rich history in the community, what have you enjoyed the most about rebuilding the hotel? The little surprises during the build were fantastic. We discovered 1925 editions of The Sydney Morning Herald in the hallway, 70-year-old pennies and one of the original windows behind the cool room. We were 38 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

taking a bit of a punt with the hotel as the place was so run down, but certainly the most rewarding part is seeing people returning to the hotel after years of driving past. I’m pleased to announce we will be major sponsors of the Kendall Blues for the 2022 season and look forward to joining them on such an exciting year. Tell us a bit about the renovation, what was the timeline for this project and what was involved?

We started the renovation at the end of April 2021, co-owners Brad and Brent who operate B&B constructions transformed the hotel within months with a great bunch of local tradesmen. The guys had their work cut out with propping of the 100-year-old first floor, reinstating the original timber columns, veranda and flooring to name a few complex jobs. While we continued to operate as much as possible, the guys went the extra mile and battled through a few all-nighters. Can you introduce us to the awesome team that you work with each day? Lee-Ann Page is the Venue Manager and has been instrumental in helping me set up and grow the business. Her knowledge and experience have been second to none, steering the hotel in the right direction. Head chef Stephen Clancy has made our dreams reality when it came to having food that would set us apart. With such a fast growing team I could literally name each staff member and praise them for each part they have played, seeing the vision that we had and wholeheartedly working towards creating a fantastic venue. Dad (Mick) has found his passion after retirement and the beer garden grass and gardens have become an obsession. As soon as the mower and hose is away though, you can find him at the bar with a Reschs.

I believe we have become the benchmark for quality fresh food in a casual pub environment, this resonates with our philosophy of fresh, local, seasonal and handcrafted food. What is your vision for the hotel and what exciting additions have you made already? We set out to create a place where everyone is welcome with something for everyone, a local that is connecting community and a day trip/tourist destination spot. I believe we have become the benchmark for quality fresh food in a casual pub environment – this resonates with our philosophy of fresh, local, seasonal and handcrafted food. We are not your typical pub, with a few changes to the layout you will find us open early in the morning serving coffee, breakfast and a wide range of baked goods and treats all made in-house. We are also offering function spaces and menus to suit every occasion, with the beer garden one of the most sought after areas in summer.

The soon to be opened top veranda will also be available for private functions. In time, the accommodation upstairs will be renovated, fingers crossed 2022. Your new outdoor beer garden is definitely a stunning addition, is this your favourite part of the hotel? Without a doubt, it is such a nice environment to sit, relax and unwind. We have lunch time Sunday sessions out on the grass with local musicians and the atmosphere is jubilant. It is so rewarding to see families arrive, sit down and watch the kids run around and explore the expansive space. Food is a big part of any hotel, can you tell us a bit about what we can expect to see on your menu?

Yes food is such an important focus for us, we cover all the pub favourites but place emphasis and importance on specials. Our specials are rotated daily and we can guarantee that people will have fresh, local, seasonal and handcrafted options not seen in your standard pub. Who would you like to thank for helping with the renovations and the work of rebuilding the Royal Hotel Kew? The Royal Hotel Kew has been through a major transformation, it’s been incredible to see the plans on paper come to life. First and foremost, the staff have been the backbone of the hotel since we have taken over, continuing to adapt through multiple changes to business, as well as the tough restrictions we have all faced over the year. I cannot thank them enough. A big shout out needs to go to King & Campbell for putting the ideas onto plans and taking care of all the approvals, B&B Constructions and all the tradesman who have worked tirelessly around the clock to restore and renovate the hotel, and Ryan Agnew Creative who looks after the branding and graphic design. Final shout out to the local community for the ongoing support. Thanks Scott. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

THE FESTIVE SEASON IS HERE!

t was fantastic to start our cruises again in November. Our first event was the Melbourne Cup, then the Prince of Polyester, Bob Downe, absolutely entertained everyone with his first sell out show. Also, we had a lot of fun with the promotion team from TripleM who did a live broadcast at wharfside celebrating the relaunch of the iconic Rhythmboat, here in Port Macquarie. The day was a huge success, even with the gale force winds, with over 240 people checking on to our boat for an inspection and to celebrate with us. Big thank you to Blue Cow Gelato, providing free gelato, Billabong Zoo, Port’s Sacred Pizza and Poisoned Apple (Rommie) with one of her many characters, Ariel, all providing entertainment and fun for the families who attended. Words cannot express how grateful we are for the wonderful involvement of TripleM, Mark Strachan, Ashley and Sarah who made the day an outstanding success. December’s party time! And we have so many Christmas party bookings, including 2 dates with our Mamamia ABBA tribute band’s Christmas show, allowing small groups to book and enjoy a shared Christmas party with others. At print, tickets are selling fast. Also,

we have many private functions which is very satisfying with our business getting back to normal. In January, we have handpicked some great entertainers that incudes live music, DJ’s etc, to give our boat and our customers a huge variety in entertainment. All cruises include catering, a changing view every couple of minutes, and an atmosphere on board which is unmatched. We start with the Chisel Barnes Tribute Show, then Elvis & Blues Brothers combining for a super Blues shows, the Fab 4 & British Invasion tribute band, and also happy to announce the return of Pat Drummond for an Australia Day Sunset show. The month will finish with two dates (Saturday night and Sunday sunset) with none other than ex-Parramatta super star, Eric “Guru” Grothe with his 80’s tribute band, the Gurus. Special guest is the NRL’s most controversial and respected referee Bill Harrigan, who can bang out a tune with the best of them. We are looking forward to our first two full months of Rolling on the River with all of this great entertainment. Keep in mind that around the live music we will have every day a scenic river cruise scheduled that includes dolphin spotting and great family value and entertainment.

FROM A SMALL IDEA TO AN EXCITING LOCAL BRAND THE JOURNEY OF BEACH LIFE CRESCENT HEAD

irstly Jino – please introduce yourself. Where do you call home and what brought you to this beautiful region? I’m Jino Joseph and my wife’s name is Twinkle Jose. We have been married for 12 years and have two wonderful children. Originally from India, I spent most of my life in the Indian Navy, having joined at the age of 17 and wearing the white uniform for 15 years. We moved to the Mid North Coast in 2016 and it took a bit of time to find our feet, as is the case for most migrants. Luckily for us this region is amazingly beautiful – and the locals are very friendly. So we knew there were plenty of opportunities in our future. Tell us about the inspiration for your brand, Beach Life Crescent Head (BLCH). How did this all come about? It all started with a beach umbrella! I have a shop in Crescent Head and one day I saw a customer carrying a lovely, stylish umbrella from a reputable brand. It occurred to me that I should stock some of these umbrellas in my shop, as I thought they would be popular. After months of enquiries to this brand and not getting a response, I thought 42 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

Earlier you mentioned help from some other local creatives – who were these businesses and how did they contribute? Collaboration is the most suitable word to describe the building of this brand. Beach Life Crescent Head honestly wouldn’t be a reality without the help and dedication of several amazing individuals, who were there every step of the way. Simon and Anna at Webstudio really guided me through the whole process. I came to Webstudio in the early stages of my journey looking for a website, but they recognised I needed to go back a few steps and do some work around branding and product development. Simon connected me with Jeff from CowanCreative – who has been integral in not just creating BLCH – but also in the design of all our incredible products. We then needed to showcase these items, for the ecommerce website and to create our marketing collateral. I was introduced to Vanessa at the Style Vibe, who facilitated an incredible photo shoot. Vanessa is now on the team as Brand Manager

– building partnerships with stockists and influencers. I feel very lucky to be surrounded by such talented people – and the fact that we are all local really makes our accomplishments all the more outstanding. And of course, it goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without my dearest wife. What advice do you have for those who have a business idea, but are a little scared of taking that first jump? I would like to preface my answer by saying I do not feel I am in a position to advise anybody, given I am still very new to all this! However, since the question is being asked, I would say it all comes down to passion. The focus should not be on making money, or getting rich! A business requires a lot of hard work, especially at the beginning. So it is really important that you are passionate about what you’re doing – and what you’re creating. I would also advise business owners to form a really clear idea about how much money they need to spend initially, to get the business off the ground. And don’t be afraid to ask questions – or ask for help. Try to put your self doubt aside and imagine what could

be, if you succeed. “Every journey begins with a single step.” Where can our readers find out more about BLCH? We are connecting with our customers in many different ways. You can find us through our website – beachlifecrescenthead.com – as well as on Instagram and Facebook. If you wish to see our products in person, you can visit one of our fantastic stockists – InnerVision in Port Macquarie, Seven 2446 in Wauchope and Coastal Folk in Crescent Head. Thanks Jino. I am so excited to be performing at Christmas Under the Stars this year! Two of my favorite things – Christmas and Port Macquarie! Everyone has had such a tough time recently, so I think the most exciting thing about carols this year is that it’s just going to be wonderful to come out and celebrate the festive season – to be with friends and family, to sit back and relax, have a picnic, let the kids run around and sing carols! My band and I have put together a bunch of songs that will make you feel like dancing! We will sing all the classic carols everyone knows and just really get in to the Festive Spirit. And to be back in Port Macquarie, one of my very favourite holiday destinations on the planet, to celebrate the Christmas Season, it feels like this next year ahead just got off to such a beautiful kick start of hanging out with friends, making music and enjoying this beautiful place. FIRE MID NORTH COAST

MUSEUM

As a seasoned firefighter, Don Davidson has dealt with many types of fires, floods, explosions, crashes, hazardous chemicals to name a few. Don, fire brigade members and their families have created a museum which displays relic equipment and artefacts, and serves the community by connecting retired service personnel and informing both adults and children of our local history.

H

i Don, tell us about the new Mid North Coast Fire Museum. The idea of the museum started in early 2000's when there was talk of relocating the PMQ Fire Station to a new emergency hub. A group of past and present firefighters and family members who had been collecting relic equipment formed a committee to petition to have the Port Macquarie fire station in Hay St saved as a museum. That was the original fire station for Port Macquarie, opened in 1958. The group canvassed the community, council, state and federal members but were unsuccessful. Like most small groups, location was always the barrier. We had lots of equipment and history to display, but nowhere to do it. One of the members (me) had a passion for creating a space that served the community in several ways. was before pagers and mobile phones were commonplace so it was the practice of the time. We were also called to assist other towns, one being Wauchope where the country club went up in flames, a massive fire that took all night to extinguish. Firefighters were called from all around, while making sure skeleton crews remained for each town’s protection. At one fire, a resident was unaccounted for so we initiated emergency search and rescue. Two of us entered the building with the roof caving in and tiles dropping around us. The floor was on fire and we needed to hose our boots as they were melting in the severe heat as we searched for the missing resident. She was later found safe and well at a neighbour’s house. We attended a navy ship on fire at the shipyard at Dennis Bridge, but the sheer amount of water it took to put it out, weighed the ship down so severely it risked crushing the dry dock slip it was perched on. Where is the museum and how can people get in contact? The Fire Museum is at 12 Stevens St, off Settlement Point Rd. It’s the last side street before the Settlement Point ferry. Initially we’ll be opening on the 4th Saturday of every month, but holiday hours will be on our Facebook page Mid North Coast Fire Museum (@MNCMuseum) and is the best way to get in touch and check for updates. As is the idea of ‘keeping it simple’. Certainly, this one’s nigh impossible as somehow it all just gets bigger than Ben Hur as the adrenalin and blood alcohol levels start to rise as the big day approaches. Hmmm, so is there even a way we can shift over into Christmas enjoyment mode, or at least not wanting to curl up in a dark room in the foetal position? I think the only way through it is just to not fight it, dare I say ‘embrace’ it? After all, whether we like it or not, it is happening. And of course there’s always that little mantra that we can repeat whenever necessary and that’s ‘Why not, it’s Christmas?’ Surely this is a one size fits all fix for all kinds of Christmas-related angst, to glide through the days with a carefree abandon that condones such things as day drinking (with responsible service of alcohol delivered by us hospitality folks of course), unbridled shopping sprees (after all the economy needs it, and it is absolutely crucial for mental health reasons to purchase oneself a Christmas pressie or two). And, last but not least, this mantra should most certainly be applied to allowing ourselves to take a big old break from the relentlessness of life too. Especially this year. It is absolutely better than ok to put your own feet up, with a good book, a Netflix binge, a snooze on the couch – or whatever floats your boat. ‘Why not… it’s Christmas’. You deserve it.

CHOP

H

i Jacqui, how was Chop ’n Chill started? The concept for Chop ’n Chill was conceived by myself and Paul some 12 or so years ago, and refined into a practical working model through extensive research and world-wide travel looking at various food styles and trends in different parts of the world. Living and travelling throughout South East Asia for some nine years, I especially became enamoured with the delicate and subtle tastes and spices of Asian cuisine, while for his part, Paul particularly relished the strong, rich flavours of smoked meats from the Americas. Where did your passion for creating amazing dishes and a matching awesome atmosphere come from? A look at the menu will give you a feel for how Chop ’n Chill combines the best of East and West to give people a dining experience unique to the Australian marketplace. It is essential to understand that for every dish on the menu not only are the freshest ingredients possible used, but also the best that can be sourced. How each individual dish is prepared, cooked and presented is also fundamental to ensuring that patrons will always enjoy a 58 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

memorable dining experience whenever they visit Chop ’n Chill. Another vitally important aspect of the unique dining experience we offer is our particular style of casual but attentive customer service, best achieved by having all staff, both cook and wait, fully committed to the Chop ’n Chill concept. What makes Chop ’n Chill such a popular destination for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Combining the best of East and West in unique menus that playfully blend the fresh street-style of South East Asia with the hearty smoked-meat flavours of the Americas. With imaginative breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, plus extensive sharing and nonsharing options, along with separate Vegan and Vegetarian and Gluten Free menus, we offer inclusive dining for everyone. Street Eats is a fast menu that is offered for the clientele who are in for a quick bite for lunch. It’s a mixture of our consistent performers on the menu and allows our kitchen to play with what ingredients they have while staying with our playful twist. We cater for all ages, and this shows every day as Chop ’n Chill has been designed to be relaxed with its sharing menus for all ages

Tell us about some of the dishes on the menu, where does Chef get his ideas from? Chop ’n Chill is young, dynamic and always ready to evolve its menu options to stay on trend and also ensure the authentic and unique element of our brand remains paramount. Also much travel (when we can), but mostly working together as a team and brainstorming weekly for new ideas. New and exciting taste sensations on a regular basis like our Combo Tray for 2, Tacos, Nachos, Bowls ’n Baskets, just too many to describe. Chop ’n Chill also have a great range of cocktails; what are some of your favourites? Jacq Dundee of course and also my go to drink in Asia is the Mojito. For those who haven’t experienced Chop ’n Chill as yet, or are here on holidays, can you describe the restaurant in one sentence? For our customers we want Chop ’n Chill to be their “local” where they regularly come for good food, good service and the company of their family or friends.

Being a jazz funk playing rockstar is Thirsty work! We spoke to Rai Thistlethwayte – singer, guitarist, pianist extraordinaire and front man of legendary Aussie band Thirsty Merc about his love of eclectic music, the evolution of the industry and the joy of rocking out to massive crowds of adoring fans.

H

ow did Thirsty Merc first come together and how fun is it rocking out to massive crowds now that you’ve earned a solid following of loyal fans? It must feel amazing when everyone sings along to your songs! It’s super fun! Definitely feels great to have that audience feedback, and people singing along is a great element of live performance, for performers and audiences alike! Thirsty Merc came together back in March 2002 when Phil and I, who were friends in the Jazz scene in Sydney, decided to jam with two of his friends who he played with in a band, on a few songs I was writing at the time. We both loved classic rock and good songwriting so we went from there and the rest is history, really! Tell us about your band members and what they bring to your songs and live shows (besides their instruments haha...) We do bring instruments haha but this is a really dynamic unit of musos. Everyone is melodically, rhythmically and harmonically in a conversation with each other whenever we get on stage. We love to hear each other’s interpretations of the tunes going by, solos, grooves, anything that happens in the gig is often different from night to night. It’s a self 66 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

I try and take good bits out level and it was one of those great moments!

focus_interview

What music have you been getting into recently – who has been inhabiting your headphones? I’ve been listening to a lot of music for Louis Cole’s upcoming tour in the Netherlands with the Metropole Orchestra, I’ve had to learn a bunch of material for it. Even though I’m essentially a session musician for this stuff, he still blows me away all the time because he’s just a unique artist and a great artist all round, plus a super lovely guy! An obvious and possibly over asked question – where did the name Thirsty Merc come from? Thirsty Merc was actually the affectionate name I gave to a gas guzzling 1979 Mercedes 280 SEL that I used to drive around when I was in my early 20s. I used to drive it to the early rehearsals and jams, so when we wanted to go with a band name I figured the name would work – plus it has those overtones with the rhyming slang of ‘thirsty work,’ which sums up what being in a band can be like :-) What advice would you give musicians about being successful and having a longterm career in the music industry? This is a great question. I think the most important thing is no matter what line of work

I have a few new tunes bubbling away, I’ve been enjoying ge ing into playing bass, guitar, and keys again, I’ll put it all together and see what comes together!

you’re in, do what you love, because even though you can have a short stint doing something that you don’t enjoy, you won’t be competitive longterm in any field of work unless you are really passionate about something. Also, you can be successful at something that you don’t wanna be known for too, which is just as much of an issue! I remember watching a video that Jim Carrey made about this, and it really hit home. And after all of this, success is a very unique specific and personal thing. The way music is distributed has evolved a lot since you guys started out. What do you think about the change in media formats from physical to more predominantly digital? I definitely have observed a lot of changes over the time that I’ve been working in music. The biggest change to me is that nowadays we have subscription models and just listen to anything that’s online whenever we want, on demand. And, we can upload anything and it is available online worldwide, instantly. But, it also means there are so many more people

all vying for the same space, so it’s still hard to know where you exist in the whole musical stratosphere! What have you been working on lately – is there some fresh music to be released or any projects in the pipeline? There is, I have a few new tunes bubbling away, I’ve been enjoying getting into playing bass, guitar and keys again. I’ll put it all together and see what comes together! What else do you like doing besides music – are there any hobbies or passions outside of being a jazz funk rock star? I like riding my bike, I also like going ice skating, and spending time with my girlfriend... apart from those, a lot of things that I do are related to music. How can people support your music, connect with you and listen to your music? I guess coming to the shows and listening, online or the radio, is the best way! We are really looking forward to playing at Hibbard Sports Club on 27th December and hope it have a great crowd there not only supporting us but live music altogether. Thanks Ray. I have been a committee member since days, fundraisers at Moorebeer and Black the end of 2016, helping with fundraising Duck Breweries, golf days and a fabulous activities, and also working on shift to provide night at Bill’s. In 2018, thanks to these early meals and non judgemental conversation to fundraisers, we were able to procure the anyone who needed it. We are a small but funds for an Orange Sky Laundry van. Being involved in this process has been and what have been some of the incredible. The biggest highlight this year was highlights of your job so far?

The most satisfying part of all of this for me though is when I am on shift, and I see how much a meal, a coffee and a chat can make a difference to someone’s day - that is always a highlight.

undoubtedly the Ride the Wave festival that we organised in June. That weekend was an ambitious project for our small committee, but so much fun to host, and we were excited to raise $15k to support our next venture. The most satisfying part of all of this for me though is when I am on shift, and I see how much a meal, a coffee and a chat can make a difference to someone’s day – that is always a highlight. What current projects are your team working on and planning for the future? In March 2021, Brigadoon Holiday Park at North Haven was devastated by the once in 100 year floods, with 96 permanent residents suffering extensive damage to their homes and losing the majority of their possessions. In April, Make a Difference PMQ, with help from local businessman Mal Neale, partnered together on a mission to roll out a washing machine and fridge drive. Through Teale Bryan, M.A.D. approached Josh Fairhall owner of Bi Rite in Kempsey and Gloucester, who

kindly offered to supply washing machines and fridges at cost price with free delivery. The M.A.D. Flood Appeal goal was to facilitate the donation of 100 appliances in 30 days. With incredible support from the community, 70 appliances were donated in 14 days. This was phase one in what became an evolving process of flood relief projects for M.A.D. Over the following weeks and months, it became clear that a broader approach to flood relief was needed. To meet this need, Make a Difference connected with other state and community groups such as GIVIT, Resilience NSW and St Agnes Parish to provide support. Linen was donated by Sheridan and distributed air conditioning units installed and water pumps and power generators acquired. In addition, flooring was restored and housing brought back to a state that is now liveable. Through the incredible community generosity shown throughout the appeal, a large number of residents across the greater Port Macquarie area, that included residents at Brigadoon Holiday Park and Riverside Residential Village in Port Macquarie, were able to get back on their feet.

We are very excited to announce that we are about to launch our third project – a brand new food trailer, which will attach to the van, and allow us to expand our services. We are in the process of re-establishing some regular shifts in both Port Macquarie and Laurieton, and are excited to get back to supporting those in need on a weekly basis. How can people get in contact and support you? We are looking to build our volunteer base, and as such would love to chat to any company that has a volunteer program in place and is looking to support a local charity on a regular basis. You can email me on karen@madpmq.com.au or pop by our market stall at the Hastings Summerwave markets on a Wednesday evening at Town Beach. Is there anything else you’d like to add? Just one more thing – we are looking for businesses who might have a large shed available to house the Orange Sky Laundry Van, the M.A.D. Van and the M.A.D. Food Trailer or, alternatively, land within the Port Macquarie area to place a storage shed for these vehicles. If you can help out in this regard, please email erin@madpmq.com.au Thank you to everyone who has supported us! Thank you for speaking with us and your contributions to our community – keep up the good work! GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

TIMBER BOAT ENTHUSIAST AND...MY FATHER- IN - L AW

ow long have you lived here in Port Macquarie, what attracted you to the area? We have lived in Port Macquarie since 2007. I had spent a lot of time on Sydney’s northern beaches when I was younger, and was attracted to Port Macquarie because of its similarity to that area. I have always enjoyed boats and I’m fortunate to own a lovely old bay cruiser called Sawdust. I spend a bit of time fiddling with the boat. Of course we are lucky to have family in town and enjoy spending time with our grandchildren. Volunteering at the Museum on our workdays seems to take care of the rest. You are heavily involved in the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum. What are the three separate components of this museum? The Museum is based at the William Street cottages where the static displays are housed. William Street is our administrative home. The Museum also manages the Pilot Boatshed at the western end of Clarence Street on the water, but following the major flooding earlier this year the attraction has been closed until we can do some internal and external repairs. I volunteer at the Hibbard Boatyard

and Slipway on the river at the northern end of Boundary Street, where we maintain our small fleet of historic vessels, and where Museum members can slip and maintain their boats. We are currently improving the site with a view to making it an attraction for locals and visitors. Hibbard is the oldest continuously operating slipway on the east coast, and we are aware of its historical significance. We operate as a de facto Men’s Shed with volunteers showing up on our work days to maintain our boats and to further develop the site. There is some amazing history on show, what is something people should look out for? Our historic vessels are elderly and require regular maintenance, but we endeavour to get out on the river for significant celebrations such as Australia Day. The boats always look wonderful under way, and represent the Museum with an enthusiasm that belies their age. For example, our Flagship the Wentworth was formerly operated by Stannard Marine on Sydney Harbour in the mid 20th century before her retirement to Port Macquarie. We like to think that some of that harbour water from a Sydney Harbour that no longer exists, where timber workboats plied their trade, remains in her timbers. The Maritime Museum recently received a

government grant, what you will do with the money received? Money is always short for organisations such as ours, but this year we have been fortunate to receive grant funding from the State Government. Help was received in the form of flood relief funding to assist with recovery from the disaster of earlier this year, and thanks to support from our local MP Leslie Williams we benefited from a Premier’s Grant that has hugely assisted with work we are performing at Hibbard to prepare for future natural disasters, and to improve access and security at our site. We are also grateful for the support we have received from local business interests which has greatly enhanced our fundraising work. Our managers at Hibbard are making good use of that funding. And finally, what is the one thing you love about where you live? Besides drinking beer at your Pubs? haha For me the take home from my involvement with the Museum has been an appreciation of just how valuable it is to be involved with the community in whatever way that appeals. Find something that interests you and just get involved. You will make new friends, learn new things, and gain a better understanding of how our community works. Thanks Peter.

graphic designer by trade and beach baby at heart, Pippa Owen launched pippaowendesign.shop in March this year. “I grew up in the Illawarra where the mountains meet the sea, and my love for the ocean and all things coastal developed.” A proud Port Macquarian for nearly a decade now, Pippa wanted to create original designs inspired by local beach life and coastal scenery on the beautiful Mid North Coast of NSW. Starting off with both digital and hand painted surf style artwork on prints, cards and journals, the business has moved into homewares including tea towels, throw rugs and beach towels and hope to add to the product range as time goes on. “We’re really proud of our growing Eco beach towel range! Each sand-free towel is made from recycled plastic waste water bottles and printed with

environmentally friendly water based inks – helping keep plastics out of our oceans and reducing landfill. They’re super soft, light, and absorbent – perfect for the beach, pool, gym, yoga and travel.” “Our beach towels and the majority of our quality products are proudly made in Australia and locally where possible, licensed to use the official Australian Made logo and listed on the official Australian Made website. Amanda BU N T S C H U ARTIST PROFILE

After seeing Amanda Buntschu’s intricate artworks it isn’t surprising to find out she has extensively studied and practiced so many different mediums all across the world – fine arts and calligraphy in China, photography in Switzerland, ceramics in Texas, visual arts in Australia, as well as watercolours & oil painting.

H

ow did you first get into visual art and what inspired you to pursue it professionally? I am an artist because of my two grandmothers. One who always believed and supported me, and the other who ingrained in me a love of her garden and all that grows. An intent to sell work has never been what drives it, when I’m making art my mind clears, calms and when I like what I’ve done, it feels great. How do you describe your style? Having predominantly been inspired by flowers, nature, organic lines, the work has moulded together with the female form. The curve of the hip, soft skin, giver of life – beauty. Everything that has magnetised me to flowers since I was a young child. Lately my work has taken on a slight surreal turn, again melding flora and female form through organic lines, sometimes found in my own garden, more often at Nobbys Beach in seaweed, patterns in the sand as our two dogs relish in their time at the beach. Another huge part of our lives, both from Dog Rescue Newcastle, our fur babies that sleep in our beds have stolen our hearts. Illuminated landscapes is loosely where I see 80 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

What has been your experience studying and working with different mediums? I have been incredibly lucky having the opportunity to delve into many different mediums. Photography (black and white), I used to have a darkroom where I would spend days or weeks producing photos.

I studied ceramics in Houston Texas, gifting friends with bowls and handmade tiles. Work took a more serious turn at Hong Kong Fine Arts Academy, as a full time student the only allowance was graphite pencil and paper. Training the hand and eye with almost photo-like still life images. The hours with the pencil were gruelling, however the control and dexterity has never left me. Watercolour training also began in Hong Kong. Moving to Shanghai China, I studied Chinese calligraphy. It too was very concise, meditative

– there are many rules. It did however feed my love and learnings of watercolour. I started in oils and had a baby – my darling daughter Joelle. She would sleep in a pram whilst I sketched and often with a French box easel, would paint plein air on the streets of Shanghai. I love the vibrancy and romance of oil painting and still have a couple of naive streetscapes just for memories. Photography (still film in 2007) was my medium of choice in Switzerland. I was a tad busy with bubba number 2, darling Charly. Charming, whimsical possibly cliched pictures of Paris, Italy, Germany, Austria… The architecture and landscapes are so amazingly magical. CEREC restorations are also metal-free which not only make them more aesthetic but also avoids further complications in the body. This technology is backed by years of documented studies showing that these restorations are here to stay. Plus, patient feedback (remember we have been placing CEREC restorations for over 12 years) is overwhelmingly positive. We find that our patients appreciate no gooey impressions, no temporary crowns, no second visits or metal fused materials. In short, patients are in no hurry to go back to traditional methods. What’s more, a CEREC crown costs no more than your traditional crown; they actually save you time and money when you factor in a second appointment, additional time off work or time spent away from the things you enjoy. JAYU MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY.

H

i Andrew. What exactly is Martial Arts and can you tell us a little about your training qualifications. Martial Art is a broad term that encapsulates self defence, with a focus on the mental, physical and emotional states. We were living in Perth when Annie (my business partner) started doing taekwondo at Burridge Martial Arts. It took two years for me to realise how serious and passionate she was about it, and decided to give it a go myself. Now I understand. We started managing separate dojangs within the Burridge group while continuing our training. We decided to move back to Annie’s home town of Port Macquarie with our baby daughter Brin. By this time Annie had received her 3rd Dan black belt and me at 2nd Dan. Over the years we have kept in contact with Master Mark Burridge of Dragon

Martial Arts Albany. Subsequently Annie has been able to achieve her 5th Dan and myself 4th. Unfortunately Covid has blocked my 5th Dan from happening! What classes do you offer at the academy for the Port Macquarie community? At Jayu Martial Arts, our focus has always been the kids! We have a Little Dragons program for the 3-8 year olds. This program is more game orientated, building balance and motor skills, learning about stranger danger, the six tenets that we teach and how they apply in their lives. A focus on discipline and how the kids themselves are in control of their decision making process. This program gets them ready for the transition to the Beginner Belt program.

Then it’s game on! With enough experience, students will then begin the Intermediate to Advanced program and then finally Black Belt classes. We also run a School Sports programs at various local schools as a sport elective. I understand both of your children are also highly skilled black belt artists. Was is it they love about the sport? Our own children, Brin and Peren have basically trained their whole lives! They really enjoy the social side and have always felt like Jayu is their second family. i Robyen. Please tell us a little about your fantastic creative business and the services you provide. We have been in business for 17 years – 12 of those here on the Mid North Coast. We are a sewing, patchwork and quilting store in both Taree and Port Macquarie – which we opened in July this year. We sell brands including Brother, Bernina, Janome, Juki, Husqvarna Viking and Handiquilter – we also service all brands of Sewing, Embroidery and Overlocker machines. We have regular classes in patchwork, dressmaking, overlocking and machine embroidery with experienced local teachers and also have visiting tutors who teach in-store. We offer a quilting service as well where customers can bring their quilt tops in and have them quilted. We have a huge

range of fabrics, threads and notions for sale and we provide great customer service. Our store and classroom is also wheelchair friendly. Sewing and the art of creating can be so therapeutic for the soul. Have you always been a sewer and where do you draw your inspiration? I failed sewing miserably at high school but always loved fabric so during my 20s I invested in some patchwork classes and my love of sewing began. I especially love machine embroidery. I have found that during Covid people have started crafts of all kinds; cooking and knitting etc, and sewing has also made a huge comeback. People are dusting off their sewing machines and creating some fabulous

things. We also have a lot of kids wanting to learn sewing and we are intending on offering some kids’ classes during the school holidays. You also sell machines here in-store including reputable brands Bernina, Janome and Brother. What can you tell us about these brands? All brands I sell are amazing and the suppliers provide us with excellent backup service. Our staff do regular training on our brands so they can demonstrate and provide quality assistance to our customers. It is important when you purchase a machine from our store you know how that machine operates and we are here to help you use it to its fullest potential.

Winners of THE BEST RESIDENT GARDEN Hometown Australia Garden Competition

M

r and Mrs Carney, you are longtime residents of Newport Village and the Hastings area, what have you enjoyed the most about living in Newport Village? We moved in about four and a half years ago from Wauchope, we had a business and a large property and we decided it was time to downsize and retire. There are so many things to enjoy about living here at Newport Village, you always have some around you, everyone is friendly. When you go for a walk around the village it can take a while because you always stop and talk to everyone. They have a great social club. There is a little bus that can take you into town and we all can go out to lunch or shopping for the day, but we also have the ability to come and go as we please if you have your own vehicle. What was it that attracted you to the lifestyle village? Well as we said we wanted to downsize to something much smaller than what we had, and when we walked in here and saw everyone’s beautiful gardens that’s what really sold it for us. Everyone takes so much pride in their homes and their gardens. We are passionate about gardening and we love pottering around the home and garden so that was a huge draw card for us. As well as the fact you’ve got your medical just across the road, you’ve got shops just here at Lake Innes and Sovereign Hills. It’s the perfect location and location was one of the most important things when we when we moved into the village. After all that’s what you’re looking at when you're retiring to a beautiful home that you can enjoy and the close

proximity to everything you need. Hometown Australia recently ran their Spring Garden Competition and you were the lucky winner. Firstly congratulations and secondly tell us about the competition? Thank you it was lovely to be recognised for doing something we both love. Funnily enough though, we didn’t actually know about it – we were given a nomination form one day and thought righty-o let’s enter. We then took some photos of the front of the house and the main garden and sent them all in. The bougainvillea looks stunning! Was it hard to grow it to that size and maintain, being such a thorny ornamental vine? When we moved in the bougainvillea was only about a metre high. We moved in in April 2017 and started on the gardens about August 2017, so yeah you could say it’s taken some time lol. The bougainvillea build has taken about four years for us. At first it was only red and then Pop wanted to add the white because it’s St George colours, so we went and put the white one in amongst that too. We keep adding to it. I am a geranium person, so I just keep shoving plants in

amongst it all to keep it going. Did it take a lot of planning to build the structure and layout of the flowers? It’s really just a favourite hobby of ours that we get so much enjoyment out of. It’s not really anything we planned. Pop has a veggie garden out the back of our house he is growing tomatoes, chokoes, potatoes, shallots. We just potter away in the garden every day adding new plants and flowers, changing the gardens around. Any tips for other gardeners interested in creating such an eye-catching display of nature at their homes? Don’t rush, enjoy what you are doing. Good soil is important, being creative is fun. We did build the garden from scratch so we went out to purchase the best soil. It can be hard work but like we said if you enjoy it, it’s not a chore. You must be patient. What are some of your other hobbies besides gardening? Well Pop is a mad St George supporter, he likes heading down to the tavern for a cold beer or two with his mates, but gardening is our passion. Robyn Ryan For over 30 years Robyn Ryan has enabled choristers to learn and perform beautiful, challenging music which has contributed greatly to their intellect and personal growth, as well as giving great pleasure and joy to a variety of audiences. She has created such a positive legacy in the Hastings community and this interview celebrates just that!

H

i Robyn, you founded the Hastings Choristers Choir in 1990 and have been conducting and directing ever since! What led you to form this group over 30 years ago and what first ignited your passion for music? I was asked to take over a small choir ‘Port Macquarie Choral Singers’ when their director retired. The choir was renamed ‘Hastings Choristers’ and then over the years morphed into the wonderful SATB choir we have today. The choir has a reputation for excellence, not just in the Hastings but being able to perform anywhere in Australia and beyond, as well as giving great pleasure ‘sharing the joy of song’ (the choir motto) with a variety of audiences. My passion for music began as a baby I think. I was always singing and dancing around as a child. I come from a musical family – with five siblings and parents who played instruments and sang, there was always music in the house. How do you feel about retiring after 96 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

groups? The techniques used to teach singing are the same, no matter what the age group. I just adapt the delivery methods for different types of choirs. ‘Bel Canto’ is Tacking Point Public School’s choir and we have had a lot of fun together. Audiences just loved hearing the children sing at our concerts. I have had extensive experience with many children’s choirs over the years and was so proud taking them to the Sydney Opera House to perform. ‘Cantabile’ is part of Hastings Choristers – a very popular group of warm, strong, interesting women who love to sing. They have brought beautiful music to my studio and our concerts over the years, performing in many genres, both a capella and accompanied. They will be performing at my final concert on December 12. Please tell us about the choir of senior singers (the ‘Savvy Singers’) and the program that helps improve dementia symptoms. ‘Savvy Singers’ was a great success. Research has shown that combining singing, exercise and patterning significantly improves cognition plus engenders a great feeling of

well-being. This is particularly beneficial for those who suffer from dementia or recovering stroke victims. The Savvy Singers got so much out of singing every week. They even performed in front of an audience! Covid put a stop to the choir unfortunately. I think this type of program should be mandatory for older people. What do your members get out of being a part of your choirs, and what do you most enjoy about conducting and performing for audiences? The joy and rigour of rehearsals, where choristers are challenged by beautiful choral music and then bring it to a successful performance, is our greatest buzz! To see the delight on the faces of the audience is our best reward plus singing beautiful, stimulating music also contributes greatly to choristers’ intellectual and personal growth. The choir brings together a diverse group of people who share friendship and camaraderie. When the women and men come together each week to sing, it uplifts the spirit and provides great health benefits to choir members – singing for two hours is a real body workout! You have had such an impressive run, what are you looking forward to after

hanging up the baton? I have had a charmed career teaching music from Pre-school to university level. I play piano and organ, teach piano and singing, have been the Department of Education music consultant for the North Coast and adjudicate at eisteddfods. I will continue with these roles and will also freelance as a guest conductor of choirs and events. I already have projects in the pipeline such as working with Jim Matsinos on a Gilbert and Sullivan production to be performed at the Players Theatre in May 2022. I’d like to share a quote about you from Dr Colleen Smee, President of the Hastings Choristers: ‘Robyn Ryan OAM should be very proud of the legacy she has created in the Hastings community, as indeed we, as part of Hastings Choristers, are very proud.’ Is there anything you’d like to say to any of our readers who may be interested in joining a choir in the future? Just Do It! Join a choir because the research into the beneficial effects of singing in groups is indisputable. If you can’t join a choir, sing at home, sing in the shower or with family and friends – believe me it will make you feel great and is so good for your health and well-being. If you are interested in joining Hastings Choristers check out our Facebook page or website: www.midcoast.com.au/~choristers Thanks Robyn. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

PRESIDENT PORT MACQUARIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ort Macquarie Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a meet the Candidates Forum at Westport Bowling Club. It was a great opportunity for the business community to meet and hear from both Mayoral and councillor candidates running in the upcoming Local Government election. A wide range of candidates from differing backgrounds and life experiences put forward their views and how they intend taking the organisation forward for the next term of council. All were passionate about the region and the common thread was a desire for improving our already great region and preserving its natural attributes whilst planning for growth. The hot topics of the evening were delivering infrastructure to support our growing region and housing affordability. Candidates put forward a wide range of ideas and strategies on how to deal with these challenges over the next decade and beyond. In terms of infrastructure delivery there was an acknowledgment of inaction of the past two decades which has lead to the current shortfall particularly in a road network to service the needs of the community. OUR KEY FOCUS IS TO GUIDE YOU EFFORTLESSLY THROUGH THE FINANCIAL MAZE, assist you to manage your priorities and help you achieve your financial goals.

marter Financial are celebrating 10 years, can you introduce us to your team? We have Julie who’s been with us going on 9 years who is in charge of our client enquiries and is also our Centrelink liaison. We have Tamara who’s just past 8 years with us, Tam is our paraplanner who also assists with the preparation of strategies. Then we have Tim, who’s recently joined us as a financial planner, and then Ashley and myself. When you started Smarter Financial 10 years ago what was your vision for the company, and what changes have you seen over the last 10 years? Ten years ago, the vision was rather simple, I just wanted to help people but do it in my own way. In the current landscape, and like most industries, there has been a massive shift towards compliance and regulation. In addition to the education reforms, we have seen a mass exodus of advisers from the industry and not too many new entries. Your new partner Ashley is a great asset

to the industry, tell us a bit about Ashley and what he brings to Smarter Financial? Ashley was with me for 5 years before he came on board as partner. Technically he’s one of the most skilled planners I know, and knowing that I can rely on him no matter what is most important to me. What have the last 18 months taught you, not only as a business owner but also as someone who works in the finance and insurance industry? When COVID hit I guess like everyone we were unsure of what was in store. It was an opportunity for us to review our expenditure and look at what would be our worst case scenario. We were fortunate that 12 months earlier we made changes to the business, which allowed us to keep working from home at near full productivity, and like so many other businesses we built up a level of resilience. As a business, and this applies to any business, you can’t just assume that business conditions are always going to be great, you need to be able to adapt and be prepared for that rainy day.

What are some of the biggest issues you are seeing in the retiring population and how can those who are due to retire in the next 10+ years avoid this? People are getting so caught up in the financial side of retirement and enough thought isn’t necessarily going into what should retirement look like? Working 5 days a week for 40 years and all of a sudden stopping can be a shock to the system. We can help someone prepare financially for retirement, but the individual also needs a plan for their retirement, whether that’s travel, charity work, time with family etc. What is one question you get asked the most? How much do I need to retire? The Association of Super Funds Australia states that $63,799 per annum is the comfortable number for a Couple ($45,239 pa Single). This assumes that you own your own home, and it equates to a retirement balance of $640,000 ($545,000 Single) and also takes into consideration a part age pension. We use this as guide, but each client is different and has different needs.

Make a Smarter Financial choice. Our team provides a range of services which are tailored to meet the financial situation of each client. Specialising in financial planning and insurance services, our skilled team is here when the big events happen in your life.

Insurance Our team assists with a range of insurance needs including personal insurance.

Wealth Creation No matter where you are on your financial journey, we’re here to assist. Whether you’re new to investing your money or you’ve been doing it for years.

But, according to Relationships Australia, the Christmas period is also the most likely time of the year for many people to experience a relationship breakdown, as well as anxiety and depression. Vannessa McCAMLEY REWIRE FOR SUCCESS

With a long, successful career in corporate organisations, Vannessa McCamley’s experience and curiosity about Neuroscience led her to research and write her new book ‘Rewire for Success’ which explains how understanding our brain function can help people achieve their goals and improve their efficiency as well as their mental health!

H

i Vannessa, tell us how you went from senior management with multinationals to author and guide to better mental performance. My own burnout, family health issues and the loss of a mentor were the catalyst for my career in wellbeing. As a mother, wife, daughter and professional, I was curious to learn more about what makes us healthy from the inside out. It was here where I found my passion for the inner workings of the brain and began my career helping others. Since my HSC at Port Macquarie High School 27 years ago and moving to Sydney, I have pivoted careers three times, all requiring study. From Hospitality Business Management working for Star City Casino High Rollers room, to Head of Marketing for one of Microsoft’s Business Divisions, to Head of Sales Enablement for IT Security company Trend Micro. Over the past eight years I’ve built my

Dad would say, ‘behind every obstacle is a lesson – an opportunity to learn and grow.’ Dad has supported me through my career and provided ideas for the book. own leadership and performance consultancy helping organisations, teams and individuals reach their goals in brain-friendly ways. In response to an increasingly overwhelming society and the immediacy of living in a hyperconnected world, I released my book, ‘Rewire for Success’; a digestible simplification of neuroscience designed to help everyone get the most from their brains to improve choices for work, life, and wellbeing. Written as a New Year’s commitment in response to Covid, ‘Rewire for Success’ is my passion on paper, designed to educate and inspire positive outcomes in times of change. My business was impacted by Covid and while exercising in a park with a girlfriend, we set each other a goal to positively impact those around us. For me it was writing the book

to share my insights on how to harness your biggest asset… your brain. How did you get into neuroscience and what was the most surprising thing you learnt about how our brains operate? After working for major corporations for 20 years in management and leadership roles reaching targets with less resources, I knew there had to be a way to achieve results without impacting our mental health and wellbeing. I am enthusiastic about preventive brain health – it requires attention on nutrition, sleep, exercise, and more that you will discover in my book. A client recommended the Neuroscience of Leadership book and it totally resonated for me. I thought that every human needs to know how our biggest asset (our brain) operates. I went back to study Neuroscience of Leadership whilst running my own business and family. I learnt many things, here are my top four: 1. The same brain regions are activated by physical and social pain. Social pain hurts! The brain is a social organ whether you are introverted or extroverted. Feeling connected and being part of something that matters is important in workplace collaboration. 2. We have different mental maps, no two brains are the same. Yet we often assume we are on the same page as other people. Every

person’s journey, no matter how similar, is different. We often treat others the way we like to be treated, though our social drivers, values, experiences, and beliefs are different. 3. The brain craves certainty, a real challenge given the constant change we experience. The brain spends significant time (estimated 42%) trying to predict the future. People need as much certainty as possible, about expectations, next steps, and roles and boundaries. 4. We can teach an old dog new tricks – adult brains are not fixed. We can’t change old habits (aka neural pathways), but we can create new ones with concentration, focus and motivation. Give us an overview of the F.O.O.D framework. My book is built around four easy steps called the F.O.O.D Framework™, making neuroscience and neuroplasticity approachable. It delivers effective decisionmaking and insightful problem-solving, allowing you to bounce back from obstacles and ensures healthy balance and wellbeing. F.O.O.D stands for: Fuel your brain – energy for change comes from diet, exercise, sleep, social connection, mindfulness, music, recovery, and relaxation. Organise your day based on when you think best. Protect your deep-thinking time from distractions so you can do your best work. Overcome obstacles with the brain in mind – prime it for known and unknown obstacles. Drive the right behaviours, mindset, and passion for achieving desired outcomes – WHY you want to achieve it and why it is important? The book has a lovely dedication to your father. How did he inspire you? My father Neil McCamley is an inspiring human. He sees the bright side of challenging situations as an opportunity to learn and grow. He is genuinely happy all the time, and is a brilliant listener who is curious about people and life experiences. I believe this positive outlook, always giving to others and working into his 80’s have given him great mental and physical health and wellbeing. He taught me to be kind, generous, helpful, dream big and be hardworking. He says even if you clean floors, do it better than anyone

else, and this will lead to other opportunities. This dedication to work helped me climb the corporate ladder. Dad would say, ‘behind every obstacle is a lesson – an opportunity to learn and grow.’ Dad has supported me through my career and provided ideas for the book. I am truly grateful for his guidance and support of the work I do to make a difference in the lives of others. What advice do you have for anyone struggling with stress and achieving their goals? Firstly, no two brains are the same, what works for one may not work for another – so I provide various options in my book. Regarding stress, not all stress is bad – we need the right levels of stress to perform at our best (known as the challenge response). Also, no one learns without getting it wrong along the way. Our greatest challenges become the catalyst to reinvention or choosing different paths (I have changed career three times, evolving by studying and relearning along the way). My amazing son Caleb is dyslexic and constantly teaches me more about thinking outside the square on what is possible. Identify the tipping point – what stress triggers send you over the edge, e.g. conflicting opinions and values, short deadlines or being overloaded with work and expectations? Communicate this with coworkers and help each other identify the signs before tipping over the edge. This will save time, energy and effort, keeping you in

peak flow for longer. And celebrate the wins along the way. Often, we are so busy on the next task, we don’t take time to smell the roses – sharing this with others enhances the experience (the reward state). Tip: Be mindful of the voice inside your head that fills you with doubt, uncertainty, and fear (F.U.D’s and imposter syndrome), that may tell you that you are not good enough. A quote that helped me with writer’s block is ‘The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek’ by Joseph Campbell. It helped me identify that writing initially felt lonely, as I get my energy from collaborating with other people. Once I had this insight, I reached out to experts to collaborate and asked them to contribute to the book – which made it even more valuable. A couple of tips for reaching goals: you firstly need to understand your WHY/ Purpose for wanting to achieve it? What is it going to look and feel like? Break down the goal options/pathways for achieving it to bite size chunks, including who and how you want to celebrate the milestone wins on the way. Build in weekly reflection time on what is working and what you need to do differently to reach your purpose in the next week – make tweaks along the journey based on your key learnings. How can we get your book and find out more? I am a coach, keynote speaker and, now, author. My new book is available for purchase via www.linksuccess.com.au or from your local bookstore. It’s interesting, my first degree I completed was a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Science (UK) and I was not sure yet what I wanted to do. I had an interest in health and in education. A family friend was a paramedic and offered to take me on a ‘ride along’ – from then I was hooked. We did not complete any ‘emergency’ jobs but the role the paramedic took in supporting patients and the community really resonated. I took a year to travel and work whilst applying and waiting for opportunities with UK Ambulance Services. I was lucky enough to be offered employment with Yorkshire Ambulance Service who would train me at the same time. I completed a Foundation Degree with the Teesside University whilst working on the road with paramedics and mentors. I had an amazing mentor and really developed a passion for the role. The Bachelor of Paramedicine (and Honours Program) is offered on campus at Port Macquarie – can you tell us a little about the course and what makes it unique? The campus in Port Macquarie is beautiful with excellent paramedicine simulation lab facilities and two of our very own working simulation ambulances that you may see driving 106 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

around and in action across Port Macquarie during the week. The team here works towards creating a safe hands-on learning environment and students are immersed in international standards and evidence-based practice producing industry-ready, prepared and conscientious practitioners. For example, our current graduates 2022 are seeking registration to practice in Australia, the UK and New Zealand despite the challenges set by COVID-19. Graduates of the Paramedic program are working in many diverse and interesting roles all over Australia and the world. What kind of careers can graduates go on to enjoy and how can they make a difference? Paramedics make a difference daily, not just for patients but for those impacted by emergency situations such as family members and loved ones. The role itself is challenging, but exciting, dynamic and very interesting. Not one day is the same. There are many career pathways developed and developing, such as rescue paramedics, intensive care paramedics and extended scope paramedics. Many roles to suit your goals and interests. The undergraduate degree sets you up with the knowledge to start as a paramedic and gain experience to move into more specialised areas internationally. You are currently recruiting for the Peer Tutor Program – can you tell us about this and why it is so important to the graduate experience? The peer tutor program is an excellent opportunity where students can apply to

build their portfolio, CV and develop skills in teaching. The peer tutor program develops student mentors who assist in the facilitation of our clinical practical classes. Students respond well to student peers and mentors. They are also a great asset to staff, allowing us to further support the needs of the students. Successful applicants complete training in class facilitation and student support. This looks excellent on their CVs when they are looking for employment. These students work closely with staff and students. Sam, now more than ever paramedics are in demand. What do you see as the most exciting opportunity for young paramedics about to head into active service? It is a very exciting time to become a paramedic as the role is rapidly developing and expanding. It is not just recognised as an ambulance driver or an emergency service. There are multiple roles to take on and professional development opportunities. The role can also be completed nearly anywhere in the world. Thank Sam. study.csu.edu.au/courses/allied-healthpharmacy/bachelor-paramedicine

MACQUARIE

VANGUARD

Local drummer Mark Spence leads an award winning drumline ensemble composed of young students who together create a rhythmically and visually striking display of musical talent, discipline and performance skills.

T

hanks for speaking with us Mark. Please tell our readers who you are and what you do! The Port Macquarie Vanguard (PMV for short) was founded in 2014 as a cross-campus ensemble for students of the St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Secondary Schools (MacKillop College, St Joseph’s Regional College, and Newman College). Drumlines have their roots in military, brass and Scottish pipe bands, and holding stand-alone competitions for the drumlines is an offshoot of marching band and drum corps competitions found most prominently in America. Drumlines consist of snare drums, tenor drums, bass drums and cymbals, and in the Australian competition format they allow the use of colour guard (flags and other props) and dance to augment the performances. Drumlines are scored based on their musicality, technical difficulty, uniformity and clarity, and marching drill and movement used to communicate the music. How has the PMV gone in competitions? Starting with their first competition in 2014, they finally broke through for their 108 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

Charlie: Heaps of time went into practicing, every Wednesday for 2 hours and heaps of push ups from Mark. Covid has made it harder to practice but we still persisted and got our performance out there. Gilbert: Collectively 2 hours is the regular time for practice and about 1 hour with just drums and another hour is the drums and choreography. A NEW CAREER DOESN’T MEAN STARTING FROM SCRATCH After studying at TAFE and cycling through various jobs, Elizabeth was yet to find the right fit for her – a career where she would look forward to going to work each day.

W

ith the help of a career aptitude test, she decided to leverage her love of the outdoors and study surveying. Elizabeth has just completed her Bachelor of Surveying (Honours) at the University of Newcastle – a top 200 University in the world*. “One of the main reasons why I chose the University of Newcastle was that I could obtain credit within the degree for some of the subjects I had already studied at TAFE,” Elizabeth said. TAFE Guaranteed Entry is just one of the many pathway options available to help people get into Uni. If you don’t have an ATAR, are seeking a career change, or are contemplating study for the first time, you don’t need to start from scratch – the University of Newcastle considers all kinds of prior learning including industry certificates and life experience to help you gain entry or credit.

The University also has a range of new diploma programs on offer, so whether you’re interested in environmental science, business, IT, education or arts and social science, these are another great pathway into a number of degrees. The University’s NUPrep program also makes starting uni a breeze. It offers free academic support that will help you start your studies with confidence. The industry connections and valuable practical experience the University offers has also enabled Elizabeth to further enhance her skills and network, preparing her for a graduate surveyor position she is due to start at the end of this year. Like Elizabeth, you’ll be on your way to a fulfilling lifelong career with greater employment prospects and higher salaries. *2022 QS World University Rankings

GORDON STREET

Lindsay Moller Productions

PROJECT WRAP UP If you live in Port Macquarie, chances are pretty high you’ve noticed the massive upgrades taking place along Gordon Street. What you may not know is that these upgrades were delivered by one of our own – EIRE Constructions. Chances are the men and women working on the ground during the Gordon St upgrades were someone you know, your mate, your neighbour, your family member – at the end of the day they were members of our community, working towards enabling sustainable growth for future generations in the Port Macquarie region. EIRE Constructions is a local civil infrastructure business based just out of Sancrox, specialising in water and sewer, roads, bridges and subdivisions, plant hire, and haulage. Offering this full range of services allows them to provide a complete end-to-end service for their clients, reducing costs and delivering projects on time and within budget. As one of our main arterial roads in and out of the city, the need for sustainable upgrades required the installation of higher-capacity water mains. These upgrades mean as our population grows, we’ve got the infrastructure in place to support it.

JON HATTON, PROJECT MANAGER, PORT MACQUARIE LOCAL, AND FACE OF THE GORDON SREET BILLBOARD.

H

ow was this project different from any other projects you’ve worked on? Working on Gordon St was very special to the EIRE team; Port Macquarie is our home, many of our team live here and use Gordon St regularly. It’s been great to have worked on something so close to home, and to help our town future-proof itself for the next generations. How did you work with the community to ensure the project was a success? Keeping the community informed with our projects is one of our top priorities – and Gordon St was no different. Working in conjunction with Port Macquarie Hastings Council (PMHC), who started talking with locals six months before the first shovel hit the ground, a lot of effort was put in by both teams to make sure the community was minimally impacted. >>

THE DETAILS

What were some of the biggest challenges on the project? Working on main roads like Gordon St brings its own unique set of challenges; this time around, the unknowns kept us on our toes – various obstacles were buried under the road that required careful planning. The next was ensuring that whatever we did, it would be sturdy enough to last our town for the next forty years to come. We couldn’t have done this project without the support of our community and local businesses. We’d like to thank them for their patience during construction as we appreciate the disruption that the project posed to their daily commute and lives. It’s great to be a local company delivering a project of this size with the community embracing the challenges that came with it. How important is it for EIRE to work on local jobs like Gordon St? We are a locally owned and run business that uses a local workforce, supports local suppliers, and spends its own money locally. Reputation and pride were at the forefront of our minds for Gordon St; with such a public-facing project, we knew that our success or failure would be public. Being local, we care about the quality of the end result but also about how we go about it; after all this is our home too.

BUSIEST ROADS

IN THE REGION

How does the Hive5 impact how you run jobs like this? Our Hive 5 is ingrained into everything we do at EIRE. Our MD, Tadhg Kelliher is passionate about supporting the unique ecosystem we operate in – this means we take care of our clients, suppliers, our team, the industry, and our communities. For Gordon St, this meant using Port Macquarie-based suppliers where possible, bringing on more local talent, supporting PMHC, and making sure what we were doing had limited impact on the comings and goings of our community. What was your favourite part about working on Gordon St? We had overwhelmingly positive and helpful interactions with business owners and local stakeholders. We delivered a program that beat our original completion expectations of Christmas time. And, of course, the bond between our own team and integral group of sub-contractors who spent countless hours and long nights delivering this project. What’s next for you and EIRE? We're always looking for opportunities to help future-proof our home town. We're excited to tender for the Ocean Drive Duplication project coming up in 2022. I'm also looking forward to delivering more specialised water infrastructure technology; if the last two years have taught us anything, it’s the importance of Public Health. We're keen to further contribute to the water treatment space and improve drinking water quality for all!

LAURA

NOBLE

ongrats Laura on your election to the Football Mid North Coast (FMNC) Board of Directors. What do you hope to achieve in your three-year term? Thank you! I’m honoured to have this amazing role. I hope to combine both strategic thinking and skills in business management with my passion for the game. To continuously improve and further promote the importance of developing the football landscape in our region, I will be focussing on creating a valuesdriven leadership team. It is critical to support coaches, players, parents, carers and volunteers to flourish and contribute positively to our football community. My role with youth focussed charity Mid Coast Connect has also been the driving force behind my goals in football – we’re all about providing opportunities for local young people – and at the heart of everything I want to achieve with FMNC is opportunities, opportunities, opportunities. Showcasing our beautiful region, its amazingly talented players and increasing female voices at higher governance levels are all opportunities I want to help create! It’s important to raise the profile of our beautiful region; its talent and the endless sports tourism possibilities to the rest of NSW. The board have been very welcoming and supportive of my ideas and input. It’s been great to get settled in and assess where things are at, to really understand FMNC’s values and goals and how they align with my own. It’s been a great experience so far and I can’t wait

to get to work! You are passionate about participation for all players and have a particular focus on female participation in the sport – why is this so important? Over the last few years female player participation has been rising across the FMNC zone and at Port Saints, with 25% of players being female. This is due to providing as many opportunities as possible. Our zone offers girls-only and mixed comps at a club level, as well as at a high-performance level. I want to increase opportunities for female participants to take on leadership roles, including game leaders, referees, coaches and committee/board members. For women and girls to feel included, grow and be successful in football as it currently exists, a shift in the way we think and lead is needed. I want to be a driver for that new leadership. I’m also a member of Women Onside, which focuses on policy development and advocacy, professional development and networking to achieve their vision of women in football, everywhere. Port Saints FC has been going from strength to strength under your leadership. How important is collaboration in your leadership strategy? Collaboration is critical. 2021 has seen our club recover to pre-pandemic numbers and surpass 2019 by 70 players'. With 527 registered in 2021, we are now the second largest club in our zone. This could not have been achieved without the professional, passionate and dedicated volunteers I work with at the club. Over the

last five years, I have really focussed on ensuring an inclusive and enjoyable experience, helping to create a real football family which I’m incredibly proud of. We have seen a rise in player numbers, retention, member engagement and sponsorship. I worked closely with past president Greg Bell to develop a community coaching program to increase participation in both a non-competitive and competitive environment where children can learn fundamental skills in a fun and safe environment from qualified and professional coaches. How do you achieve balance across your voluntary roles in the sport and community, work, family and study? Yes, things are busy! Volunteering for Port Saints FC, Mid Coast FC, FMNC and The Rabbit Sanctuary is teamed with working full time at Mid Coast Connect. I am also studying towards a Graduate Certificate in Community Leadership and Resilience with Charles Sturt University. Linking my experience with study has been invaluable to my first year as director and president. Balancing work, study and volunteering can be a challenge; thankfully my husband and son are really supportive. They understand how equally important all of those things are to me and they get involved where they can. We’re our own little team. I can

already see it rubbing off on both! 2022 will be my husband Damian’s second year of coaching a representative team and our son Hunter loves being a player, game leader and ball kid for the club. Trying to do it all just seems to run in the family! As non-player, what make you so passionate about football and drives you to do what you do? I started as a soccer mum, organising carpool and cutting oranges for half time. But that quickly developed into more. After seeing how much work goes into every Saturday morning by volunteers I knew I had to do more. I have especially seen, since starting my football journey, that football has the potential to provide an opportunity for everyone regardless of race, gender, age, ability or socioeconomic background, to unite and build connections – on and off the field! Building that connection for my community is what drives me. Seeing players, teams and families come together every week and develop lifelong skills and friendships is incredibly rewarding. Who is your mentor? In football, I have to credit past president Greg Bell. He is a strong advocate for the sport and what he believes in. He pushes me to step out of my comfort zone and step up to help. His dedication to the club, the game and the wider

football community has been an inspiration. What is the hardest lesson you have learned in your leadership journey? I can’t be a people pleaser and a leader all at once. People look to their leaders to make the tough calls and those don’t always make everyone happy. I like to think that I balance out my decisiveness and ambitions by developing strong relationships through communication and empathy. Honouring these relationships by providing individuals with time, support, and guidance is critical to maintaining good leadership. Biggest challenge you face? Developing my voice within the community to help lead initiatives for improved resourcing for women in football, including referees, coaches, players and administrators. Biggest risk you have taken? Putting my hand up and saying “I’ll do it” when I became secretary of Port Saints. I had committee experience but nothing like what I was walking into. But I stepped forward, gave it my best and learnt everything I could about the game and how to run it. I’m naturally an introverted person so I feel like every day I put myself out there in the public eye is a bit of a risk. But everything I have accomplished, big and small, in football so far has been a reward worthy of the risk. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

TOYOTA

HILUX SR HI-RIDER

This month we’re taking a LOOK AT THE BEST SELLING VEHICLE IN AUSTRALIA THIS YEAR, THE ALL NEW TOYOTA HILUX. Yep, that’s right, the best selling car in the country.

U

p until September, the HiLux sold more than VW’s entire fleet. Specifically for this review, we’re taking the SR Hi-Rider 4x2 for a spin. Hi-Rider by name and by nature. There are some cars you sit down in and some that you climb up into. The Toyota Hilux is definitely in the latter category. And when you do climb in, you can feel it. You’re up there. Where you can see everything. I drove past houses that, until now, I didn’t realise had swimming pools. I think even the oxygen was a bit thinner up there. For those who are used to riding lower to the ground, it’s a completely different sensation. I believe that cars have a personality of their own. They should have a name and as such, deserve their own soundtrack. Somehow, the HiLux told me it wanted to play the Red Hot Chili Peppers and who am I to argue? “Road trippin' with my two favourite allies. Fully loaded, we got snacks and supplies...” Crank it up and let’s go! I’m a big fan of cruise control, so the first thing I did was head for the highway to check out the electronic radar activated system. Worked a treat and kept me at a safe and comfortable cruising distance from the vehicle in front of me. There were no sudden braking

surprises or bursts of acceleration, the system held its place really well. When I was ready to overtake, it kicked in quickly to my set speed when I chose to change lanes. The six-speed automatic transmission was super smooth when accelerating and slowing down too. No clunks between gears. When I got back to town the HiLux was easy to navigate around through traffic and once I got acquainted with the turning circle of this sized vehicle, it was a real pleasure to cruise around in. The rear camera came in really handy too, making reverse parking a breeze in a pretty long vehicle. In cars, as in life, some things change and some stay the same. I mean, Toyota have been producing the HiLux since 1968 and they’re still around for good reason. The HiLux has balanced its changes well with an evolutionary approach to the driving experience. I haven’t been in a HiLux for some time, but the familiarity of the cabin and the sound and feel of the diesel engine took me straight back to the last time I did so in Central Queensland driving from Emerald to Rolleston. Added to the nostalgia were the modest upgrades, in particular, the infotainment system with its 20cm touchscreen was very user friendly with plenty of shortcut buttons around the edge to quickly get you where you want to go. Other

electronic features include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and the myToyota app (which keeps you connected to your vehicle and up to date with its fuel levels, odometer, location and more) as well as Bluetooth phone connectivity with voice recognition. In addition to the 4x2 variant (which is fine around town), if you want to get off road there’s the Hi-Rider 4x4 model SR. Both deliver ample ground clearance and plenty of space in the cabin and in the back, along with all the grunt at 150kW of power and 500 Nm of torque thanks to the 2.8 litre Turbo Diesel engine and six-speed, super smooth, electronic automatic transmission. The HiLux offers plenty of variants too in single, extra or double cabin size, a petrol option and all the extras you could possibly think of from steel or alloy bullbars to the new Tub Step that is mounted to the rear corner of the chassis to help you jump in and out easier. Plus a Bed Slide system which rolls out from the tub for easy access to all your work gear and everything in between. I guess all this is what makes HiLux Australia’s favourite vehicle. Starting from just over $45,000, the HiLux is an awesome multi purpose family and work vehicle and, despite global shortages, Warren Plowright Toyota have HiLux stock ready for immediate delivery. CAN 2022 POSSIBLY REPEAT THE RECORD-BREAKING YEAR FOR THE PORT MACQUARIE

PROPERTY

MARKET

A

s we reflect on 2021, it is no overstatement to say it has been a truly spectacular year for real estate, the like of which has never been seen before. Over and above the usual contributors to a buoyant market, our town in particular had several unique factors driving it. Year on year, we saw a 50% drop in new listings, whilst buyer enquiries rose 80-90%, creating the perfect storm for a sellers’ market. Our town was also a target destination for the exodus of people leaving the cities. Becoming NSW’s most searched regional town and with 67% of enquires on our homes coming from out of

area buyers, this highly competitive and cashed up buyer environment led to exponential price rises and a hot property market. A dramatic shift we identified was the growth in high-end property sales. For example, in 2021, there has already been 146 sales over $1million, compared to 88 in 2020. There was also a rise in investor/first home buyer activity, which saw the Clifton suburb see the biggest price growth of any, with median house prices in the last three months being almost $200k higher than 2020! At HEM, it has been another record year for our sales and rentals team. So far, we have sold 235 homes, with over 150 record prices and

75% sold over asking price. Our rental team have enjoyed their best year to date, leasing 136 homes and importantly navigating some tricky times with the lowest rent arrears and vacancy rates on record. 2022 will be another big year and whilst we do not expect this rate of growth to continue, we are excited about the long-term future of our property market. We have a unique town that has it all and with the secret out there, demand will keep driving growth. At HEM, we are expecting a busy run into Christmas and are excited to be helping more buyers, sellers and tenants find their Happy Ever More in 2022!
