From fearless jockey to the new face of Fashions on the Field, Belinda Smith (née Hodder) is a familiar name in Mid North Coast racing circles. After a decade in the saddle, overcoming a career-ending injury, and finding new ways to stay connected to the industry she loves, Belinda is embracing her next chapter with trademark grit and grace.

i Belinda. Let’s go back to the beginning, what first drew you to the world of horse racing and becoming a jockey? It was probably more a case of beat them or join them. My mother and father both trained racehorses and with that, daily chores consisted of stable duties. I grew up riding ponies and going to Pony Club and I just naturally gravitated towards the industry because of my love for horses. Could you share a bit about your career as a jockey and some of your riding highlights? It was more than a career, I guess you could say it was my first love. It wasn’t without its challenges but I enjoyed every moment of the 10 years I had race riding. I rode around 400 winners. The bulk of them were in the Mid North Coast. I built many relationships that I still have now and will forever be appreciative of all the support I received, especially from the local trainers and owners in the area.

You’re now working with Sky Racing. What does your role involve, and how does it keep you connected to the racing world you love?
I reached out to the team at Sky Racing and was lucky enough to receive the opportunity of a part time position with them and I have loved every minute.
I’m a big believer that “Life happens for you, not to you” so after my injury I was quick to look forward and look for a new direction. I reached out to the team at Sky Racing and was lucky enough to receive the opportunity of a part time position with them and I have loved every minute. I love the fact that I still get to be part of a race day. I get to interact with the community of people that have supported me throughout my riding career all the while learning a new craft providing comments and opinions of the industry that was my first love. me to grow in ways I never expected. You won Fashions on the Field last year. What was that experience like, especially knowing your deep connection to the racing industry?
It was so much fun. I felt a bit like a fish out of water being on the opposite side of the fence, but I love how much the new committee at Port Macquarie Race Club has been evolving since the track reopened. They have done such an amazing job with the addition of the lawn party and bringing on more sponsors for Fashions of the Field. These incentives appeal to the younger generation which is so important for the future of our industry. You’re now the face of Fashions on the Field in Port Macquarie. What are you most excited about in this new role?
I am so grateful to be a part of it. I am just your usual knock about sheila. I threw an outfit together and came for a fun day out. The fact that I won it blows my mind. FOTF can be extremely competitive and lucrative with many women investing a lot of time and money. I hope that the fact that I am very inexperienced and managed to win it gives other people the It’s not where confidence to have a you start, it’s crack. Fashions on the Field is as much about creativity and expression as it is about competition. How do you put a winning outfit together? Any style tips for 2025 hopefuls?
where you finish. I have been through, and overcome, much more than a broken back in my time. I believe the only limitations in life are the ones you put on yourself.
I am a lover of fashion and take my inspiration off what others have done well. Port Macquarie Cup is in Spring so the theme is important. Pastels and bright colours are in. Not too much skin! You don’t need to spend a lot either. I made my own fascinator
last year with a hat shell off Temu, some offcuts from my dress that got hemmed, a couple of hours, and a ton of bad stitching!
Racing days are big community events in Port Macquarie. What do you love most about being part of the local racing scene here? The fact that Port Macquarie Race Club is evolving with the times. Nardi has done such
an amazing job in keeping it fun and relevant. Looking back, how has your journey from jockey, to overcoming injury, to becoming a public face in racing fashion, shaped who you are today? It’s not where you start, it's where you finish. I have been through, and overcome, much more than a broken back in my time. I believe the only limitations in life are the ones you put on yourself. I am excited for what the future brings. Thanks Belinda. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 17

What’s the most challenging part about umpiring at such a high level? Brinkley - Umpiring at state level is very different to Saturday club games. It is tiring and people don’t realise how fit umpires need to be to cope with the constant running and change of direction. Umpiring at such a high level for three days straight is also very mentally draining, having to maintain a really high level of concentration in addition to the physical load is a lot! Sophie - The most challenging part of umpiring at a high level is the pressure we have to make the right calls and decisions which could determine the outcome for a team. Another is the sideline, because you always get a supporter or parent criticising young and upcoming umpires. Umpires aren’t always perfect each game but they are putting their hand up and volunteering their time for a team to be able to play. Without them there would be no game. Continued over... identified by Netball NSW for their umpiring program. I prepared for this program by developing my skills at my local club level and representative carnival games. This allowed me to practise my skills so that the mentor coaches within the NSW program could give me higher order and more technical feedback for future potential pathways as an umpire. Confidence is so important in umpiring. How do you keep calm and make quick, clear decisions under pressure? Brinkley - Coming up through the umpiring ranks, I was provided lots of opportunities locally to umpire older players and even junior finals rounds. It’s all about time on the court developing skills and confidence. It becomes instinct, you see the play and you know what call to make.
BRINKLEY
The Netball NSW Umpire Development Program is known for being competitive and highly selective. How did you prepare yourselves to be part of it? Brinkley - I was invited into the Netball NSW Umpiring Program after my umpiring performance at the 2024 Senior State Titles. As a 14 year old, I was umpiring Division 1 Opens State Championships Games. It was scary but a great opportunity. Sophie - Confidence takes time when umpiring. Starting on younger and lower grades helped me gain that confidence to allow me to make those quick decisions when under a little bit of pressure. This really set me up for success when I advanced to older and higher grades. Umpires often need to have a deep understanding of the game. How has your own netball experience as players helped you as umpires? Now I find myself in a position where I am umpiring alongside umpires I looked up to as a junior netballer. I also have to say my Mum has been an amazing support person for me as she has a deep passion and knowledge of the game. There is no way I could play and umpire at state level if I didn’t have my Mum and Dad backing me. Sophie - I have been very fortunate to have many umpiring mentors such as Faye O’Neil and Donna Lewis from Wauchope Netball Club who have helped me from the very beginning of my umpire journey. They helped me achieve many successes such as my national C Badge, and I have been lucky enough to have many people within my club at Wauchope and Hastings Valley Netball Association support me throughout my umpiring journey, encouraging me to do events such as junior state titles.

argret Meagher, founder of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, tells the story that from the beginnings of the Trail back in 2010, her wishlist included creating a Big Koala to be tagged ‘The Spirit of All Koalas”. The opportunity to find an ideal home for The Big Koala evolved from 2018 when Forestry Corporation embarked on developing a new educational and tourism precinct in the Cowarra State Forest. This new visitor attraction was formally opened in December 2024 and was named ‘Guulabaa, Place of Koala’, located on the corner of the Oxley Highway and Burrawan Forest Drive, with the signpost Guulabaa Way. From the bustling streets of India to the serene coastline of Port Macquarie, photographer Carlie Fairburn has built a career capturing authentic connection and raw emotion. H
i Carlie. Can you share a bit about your photography journey, how you got started and what continues to inspire you?
I’ve always loved taking photos, experimenting with film photography back in school, and just loved capturing faces and genuine connection. The first time I travelled to India was a turning point and that’s where my love for photography exploded. The colours, textures, landscapes, and the wildness of it all felt like literal magic for both the eye and the heart and the people. It was there that I fell deeply in love with capturing human stories. I returned to India many times, as well as to other places around the world, always carrying ridiculous amounts of rolls of film in the bottom of my backpack! For years, I documented the lives of those closest to me, as well as my own life and family, gradually transitioning from film to digital as technology evolved. When COVID hit and my work as a
You were living in Israel for 15 years, capturing the world through your lens and also working as a musician. What was that time in your life like creatively and personally?
Those 15 years were an incredibly rich and creative chapter of my life. I had the privilege of singing alongside some truly amazing musicians, busking on many streets, and playing many exciting stages. During that time, my first daughter, Yemaya, was born, and she grew up travelling the country, backstage at festivals and shows, experiencing quite the extraordinary childhood. As photography gradually took a more central place in my life, I found myself constantly inspired to capture authentic connection and raw emotion through my lens. The transition from singing to photography felt very natural for me. I feel the same deep connection and open channel to something bigger than myself with both the microphone and the camera. I am incredibly fortunate to have discovered and built a life around these two creative parts of who I am. You returned to Australia under difficult circumstances, which must have been incredibly challenging. How did photography help you during that time of transition and rebuilding? When I first returned to Australia, I couldn’t bring myself to pick up my camera for almost a year. I think I was simply focused on finding my feet and creating a sense of stability for my girls. It felt so strange to go from photographing constantly, doing what I loved every single day, to not photographing at all. Later that year, I started taking my camera with me on beach walks, and unexpectedly found a new joy in photographing the dogs at the dog beach. It sounds simple, but this is where my heart came back to life. Their unfiltered happiness was infectious, and they reminded me of the pure joy of simply being alive. I have an entire series of these images that I dream of turning into an exhibition one day. It dawned on me then, after years of being drawn to capturing people and the soul behind their faces, that I was doing exactly the same with the dogs. Not long after, I got a macro lens and became fascinated by the natural world, exploring the tiny, intricate details of nature’s beauty. For me, capturing the soul of what I see - the essence that lies beyond what the eye alone can take in is very exciting to me. You’re now based in Lennox Head and teaching in Lismore, while still travelling to Port Macquarie for shoots. What is it about photography that continues to draw you in? Yes, I’m lucky enough to work at an incredible school, Living School in Lismore, surrounded by very creative, passionate children and teachers. I often have the joy of photographing the kids 28 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
and their adventures right there at school, which is amazing.
It’s about creating an experience we share, there is a lot of trust in each other and in allowing the beauty of the moment to shine through.
As for what draws me into photography, it’s exactly that - the drawing in. Someone once asked if seeing the world through my lens created a barrier, as though it separated me from the experience itself. For me, it’s the complete opposite. My lens pulls me deeper into the moment - sharpening my awareness, heightening my senses, and allowing me to be completely immersed in whatever is happening around me. Photography doesn’t distance me from life; it invites me closer.
Port is clearly still close to your heart. What does it mean to you to come home and continue doing photography here? Port will always hold a special place in my heart. I lived here as a teenager, and my parents have called it home ever since, so it’s woven into who I am. After years of living overseas, I feel so grateful to be just a few hours away now instead of thousands of kilometres. I love coming down to visit my family (my brother and his family live in Port too). Being able to combine these trips with photography feels like the perfect combination of personal and creative joy. Your photography is joyful and emotive. What do you love most about being behind the lens, and how do you approach capturing those special moments?
I really love meeting interesting people and getting to be a part of their story for a moment. I just adore capturing real, true connection. Photo sessions are built on a trust that naturally develops very quickly, between myself and who I am photographing. A shoot never feels like it is mine alone, it is a collaboration from the very beginning. There is always a lot of laughter during shoots and quite a bit of me squealing with excitement when I know I’ve caught something truly beautiful. Whether it’s a pregnant mama to be, a bride, or a family, my clients invite me into their worlds for a little while. It's a great privilege and is much more than just the images they receive at the end. It's about creating an experience we share, there is a lot of trust in each other and in allowing the beauty of the moment to shine through. Do you have a favourite type of shoot; family, portrait, lifestyle, and why does that style speak to you? I honestly can’t choose just one favourite type of shoot - and I’ve stopped trying. Years ago, another photographer told me I should pick a single style and devote myself to it completely. But for me, that felt like closing the door on too many beautiful possibilities. I love to capture it all! I get the same amount of joy capturing a wild dance floor of hundreds as I do from an intimate one on one session with a dancer. Every shoot is its own journey and that is exactly
what inspires me. Looking forward, what are your hopes for your photography, your creative journey, and your life back here on the coast? Looking ahead, I hope to weave photography more deeply into my everyday life here in Australia, not just as a profession, but as something I continue to do for the pure love of it. I want to carve out time to explore more of nature along the coast, to wander slowly, and to notice the quiet details that inspire me. My goal is to keep discovering new subjects and moments that spark joy, whether that’s the light falling through the trees, or the genuine connection between people. Ultimately, I want photography to remain both my creative outlet and my way of celebrating the beauty of this place I’m lucky enough to call home, while also allowing it to grow into a sustainable part of my livelihood, so I can keep doing what I love for years to come. And I am just dying to capture the whales migrating along the east coast! Where can we find out more or get in touch? i Nixi. This is certainly going to be an exhibition not to be missed! Can you tell us a little about your involvement with ‘New Exuberance’ and what we can expect to see of your iconic works? My label focuses on augmented reality activated clothing. I create interactive experiences that connect community and facilitate an intimacy with the concept of wearable technology to probe the perimeter of possibility and try to re-contextualise the parameter of fashion. This exhibition is about that. It’s designed to uplift your imagination and immerse yourself in positive storytelling and it’s unique in the sense that it’s about joy. With the intensity of the world and life at the moment, joy is very important to inspire and offer hope. The pieces I have in the show are my digital prints that are ‘AR’ activated and slot into the ‘New Exuberance’ theme of boundary pushing textile practices. My work is about fashion, performance, visual storytelling and technology. I have always said garments are wearable tools that carry character, they project your personality and they allow you to connect to community and this touring show is an
expression of that.
The Glasshouse Regional Gallery will play host to an exciting touring exhibition uniting the creativity of 30 renowned artists in design, art and fashion through textiles. Focus caught up with inspiring Imagineer Nixi Killick as she gets set to return to Port Macquarie as part of this collaborative launch celebrating art, design and fashion.
When it comes to textiles, seeing the breadth of the different people represented and the different work in the show is such a great testament to the scope of textile design being done.
New Exuberance celebrates the work of more than 30 textile creatives and includes commissioned furniture pieces produced by designers to acknowledge the rich diversity of textile-based practices in contemporary art, design and fashion in this country. Can you share with us your definition of textile design?
I have spent a lot of time unlearning the concept of boundaries as the siloed disciplines to me were very limiting. Coming from my original background, I was jostling between art, performance, textiles and fashion and trying to remain untethered creatively was really important to be able to then have an honest and true creative journey. When it comes to textiles, seeing the breadth of the different people represented and the different work in the show is such a great testament to the scope of textile design being done. I think often
people come to the table and think they know what they’re going to see and this show is a great demonstration of ‘outside of the box’ textile making and material exploration. It’s vibrant and fearless.
What would you say to upcoming artisans in your field trying to make their way? How can they navigate a path? I believe we need to celebrate progressive attitudes and critical thinking and a taste for breaking boundaries by re-contextualising the parameters of your practice and re-examining the landscape of the practice you are moving into in terms of disciplines. I think it’s our responsibility to dream the future awake. Dream the most amazing future for yourself and bring the present forward to meet it. I think we’ve never had as many opportunities and tools at our finger tips and now is the time to step boldly forward and create some honest, vibrant, joyous, fearless expressions because the world needs it! Port Macquarie artist Gabrielle Bisaro moves fluidly between handbuilt, carved ceramics and bold, expressive paintings. Drawing inspiration from the natural world around her, her work is a tactile celebration of texture, pa ern, and the quiet details that make each piece uniquely her own.
H
i Gabrielle. When did you first discover your passion for making art, and how did it evolve into working with both ceramics and painting?
I’d say my passion for art really began when I was a kid just with drawing. But when I was finally able to take art as a subject in high school, I was lucky to have an amazing art teacher who supported and encouraged me throughout those years. After high school, I went on to study Visual Arts at TAFE, where I was introduced to a wide range of styles and techniques across different mediums. At first, I gravitated more towards painting and drawing, ceramics didn’t immediately click with me. In 2016, during a bit of an artistic block with painting, I took a ceramic class where we built a bust, and that’s when something shifted. I started to fall in love with clay and the hands-on, tactile process it offered. Since then, I tend to move between phases. I'll spend months focused on painting and drawing, and then when I feel the need to reset or shift gears, I’ll transition into ceramics for a while. It’s like hitting a creative reset button that keeps my practice fresh and balanced. Your ceramic work is hand-built and carved; a slow, tactile process. What is it about working in this way that inspires you?
My favourite part,
I love the slow burn of While the materials though often the the entire process. From and processes are quite most time-consuming, is the very beginning coiling different, painting often the carving. Can you walk us through your creative My favourite part, though often the most time-consuming, is the carving. I find a quiet satisfaction in etching patterns into the surface textures and marks inspired by elements I see in nature. It’s meditative but direct and connects me to both the material and the world around me in a way that’s hard to explain, but incredibly fulfilling. How does your approach to painting differ from, or complement, your ceramics practice? More recently, I’ve started to notice a growing connection between my painting and ceramics practices. Some of the markings and etchings I use on my ceramic pieces are beginning to appear more frequently in my paintings and drawings. These textures and lines create a sense of movement and depth in my 2D work, like how they bring life to the surface of clay.
process when working on a piece? What does a day in the studio look like for you? Most of the time, I start with a quick sketch to figure out the shape or layout. If I’m painting with gouache, I’ll slowly build up layers over the sketch. With Posca pens or acrylics, I focus more on texture, line work, and repetition. With ceramics, I hand-build everything using coils and then carve into the surface once it’s dried a bit. The patterns are often inspired by the same natural forms I draw and paint, and I love how calming and hands-on the process is. There can be a lot of deliberation back and forth, some days more than others. Every piece takes on its own life form of sorts. Some come to life very quickly and I can't get it onto paper quick enough, and others can take more contemplation and distance to complete the image in mind. Continued over... Living and creating on Birpai Country, how does the landscape and environment influence your work? It influences my work majorly, we’re so lucky to live on such beautiful Country here. With such rich wildlife all around us, getting outdoors and seeing wildflowers and birds in their natural environment is one of the best ways for me to get inspired. The colours, patterns, and movement in nature out here always find their way into my work. How would you describe your style of art, and how has it shifted over time? I would have to say looking at it now, it has been incredibly full-circle. Even before I found my mediums of choice, I have always had a style - bold! Though my textures, colours and structures have differed and morphed, I have never been afraid to make a statement. TAFE pushed me beyond my comfort zone in all things, but it was there I found a deep love and appreciation for the human figure through countless life-drawing classes I attended. Meet Libby and Trisha, the new owners of Port Macquarie’s muchloved Social Grounds café. After years working in Brisbane’s fastpaced corporate world, the dynamic duo swapped suits for aprons and boardrooms for beachside brews, bringing with them a wealth of experience in customer service and a shared dream that started as a joke over coffee.
Social ello! Please introduce yourself and tell us how you came to call Port Macquarie home and become the new owners of Social Grounds? With us both having lived in Brisbane inner city and working in the corporate sphere for a long time, we were needing a change in our business lives and our personal lives. We worked together a few years ago and knew we made a great team, so we held this notion of moving to a small town, buying a café and making coffee all day. It was a bit of a joke between us until one day we said “let’s do it, we could actually do this”. We’ve been in the customer service industry for decades and knew we could create a lasting experience with both our customers 40 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

and with our team. Can you also introduce us to your team and their roles within the Social Grounds family? It does feel like a family because many of our team have joined us from doing work experience, or because they’re friends and family of existing team members. We have an amazing chef in the kitchen who is training up a young trainee chef, and we have our long term front of house team working with our customers. We feel truly lucky to be working with our dedicated and fun crew! Being fairly new to our region how important is local community to your
business? Once we realised we were going to do this, we searched for café businesses around the region and landed on Social Grounds because of how established it is in Port Macquarie. Once we visited we fell in love with Port, its beaches, the town energy and the people here. We knew this was a community we could become a part of and we could also develop further links with, through our café. It’s only been a year yet we have developed many friendships in and about the community and we have been welcomed as members of several groups in the region already. What kind of vibe and experience are you aiming to create, and what do you want customers to feel when they walk in? We both believe in authenticity and in bringing people together. We aim to create a relaxed, welcoming and real vibe here, one where our community can come knowing we will always welcome them, serve up excellent food and coffee, and where they receive a warm personable experience. We quickly found we have a large base of regular customers and so it’s been a rewarding time for us to know them, engage with them and hear their stories. Let’s talk menu, theme nights, special events, what are you hoping to bring to your cafe/restaurant? We’ve already hosted themed menu nights
which have all been booked out and been really fun. Our team love these nights, and we are looking forward to hosting some Sip ‘n Paint ‘nights, expanding to trivia nights, local talent afternoon sessions, and even hosting some wedding receptions later this year. What’s your go-to drink or dish on the menu?
Our Spiced Eggs are still a local hero dish, though Libby prefers Spiced Eggs and Trisha is loving the citrus styled Chicken Benedict. Needless to say, we both relish our morning double riz la es!
Recently we introduced our Brisket Benny Stacker, which quickly became a favourite and the most reviewed dish on our menu. Our Spiced Eggs are still a local hero dish, though Libby prefers Spiced Eggs and Trisha is loving the citrus styled Chicken Benedict. Needless to say, we both relish our morning double riz lattes! Where does your team get their inspiration from when it comes to creating the menu and coming up with new items Our chef Dylan is a really passionate chef, he’s inspired with what he creates and cooks a lot at home to try out new flavours and techniques. All of our kitchen team strives to perfect each dish and yet be different, and are committed to
presenting dishes that are slightly different to what’s expected. What have you learned since taking over about cafe life and yourself?
We’ve learned not to sweat the small stuff; we are passionate about our team and our customers, so we’ve learned blending fun with quality and consistency has created a happy and vibrant team, and smiling, satisfied and loyal customers. We’ve also learned how strong and effective we are as this dynamic duo that works to each other’s strengths. Libby is our detailed, people person and Trisha is our business ‘big picture’ person. Where do you see the café in five years? We are currently looking to expand our afternoon and night events, and continue to nurture young local people in their work experience and employment where they can develop their skills while they’re with us. 20years
I
t’s been a trip down memory lane recently here at the Mullet as this month we are so very thrilled to be celebrating our 20th birthday. It’s an occasion worth reflecting on to be sure. We’re so incredibly proud to have achieved this significant milestone and so grateful to everyone who has contributed to the success of our restaurant over the past two decades. Most significantly, we’re especially indebted to you – our amazing local clientele who have unfailingly supported us throughout this rollercoaster ride and still continue to do so 20 whole years down the track. If there’s one thing us small business owners are not very good at, its marking occasions and celebrating wins, as we are often just in the thick of it and without dedicated departments such as HR and marketing – we sometimes miss the milestones completely. 20 years however, is significant in ways too powerful to ignore in that it heralds real generational change and that the passing of time is only too real. In 2005, when we opened The Stunned Mullet, life was different in so many ways. We ourselves were certainly a lot younger and fresher looking than we are now, but 46 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
also it was a completely different world our business was born into too. Going back through the archives and photos of that time have revealed our origins to be mostly void of tech – the digital universe only a glimmer in the developers’ eyes back then. A time before social media, before these phone cameras we wield as a constant validation of our existence now. We discovered that we in fact have barely any photos of our grand opening and even less of our first few years of trade. Media mentions were all print based with yellowing articles from the Port News, cut out pages from magazines and, yes there was even a time before yours truly Focus mag came into being! So, without so many visual cues to fall back on we have had to think back to our admittedly less reliable memories of that time and exchange stories with our longterm guests and team members we still are fortunate enough to be in contact with. What a time it was – The Mullet, back when we ran breakfast, lunch and dinner service 7 days a week. We certainly jumped in at the deep end and somehow managed to stay afloat…not without a very steep learning curve and then some. Certainly, our team
Palate with LOU PERRI

members of that time still have some very vivid memories of some particularly chaotic breakfast services! Then there was the town of Port Macquarie. Much, much sleepier and simpler times back then. A time before universities, before The Glasshouse. There was no Link Road, nor indoor stadiums. Grey nomads were the most prevalent members of the population of holiday makers. Our home – “The New” Sandcastles building (anyone remember the old Sandcastles Motel?), was only a couple of years old when we came to fit out Shop 1. Being able to reflect in this way is certainly a privilege, as all ageing really is. We wouldn’t have had it any other way and we are truly humbled by the fact that we’re still here today. Growing up with our customers, our local suppliers (some who’ve been with us every step of the journey like the wonderful Ken Little Fruit and Veg), and being able to watch our team members who were babies themselves now having their own families and starting their own businesses has been unbelievably special. Looking forward to the next 20 years… wonder what that will bring?

Strawberries and Sunshine SEPTEMBER’S SWEET START TO SPRING
T
here’s something magical about the first hint of spring. In Australia, September brings more than just warmer weather, it brings a burst of life, colour, and sweetness to our plates. Leading the charge in this seasonal shift? Strawberries! Those little red jewels aren’t just a delicious snack, they’re the heralds of spring, the edible confetti that marks the end of the grey winter days. As the mornings lose their chill and the days stretch out, strawberries begin to appear in abundance, signalling the start of longer afternoons, brighter skies, and fresher produce. But strawberries aren’t the only stars of the season. September is the month that turns the tide for fruit and vegetable lovers. Prices start to ease as supply ramps up, and your shopping basket suddenly feels a little lighter on the wallet. It’s a welcome relief after the tight, lean months of winter when shorter days and lower yields often mean higher costs. Why September Changes Everything. Winter isn’t just cold for us, it’s cold for our crops too. Shorter days and low temperatures slow growth, making fresh produce scarcer and more expensive. That’s why many households feel the pinch during winter, not only are heating bills higher, but so is the price of a salad. But come September, everything changes. The soil warms, the sun lingers longer, and farmers finally breathe a sigh of relief as crops flourish. Strawberries, in particular, thrive in these conditions. Fields that were quiet and dormant

dessert topper, or salad enhancer and because they’re coming into peak season, they’re more affordable than ever. That means you can buy a punnet (or two… or three) without feeling guilty.
Nature’s Mood Boosters. September isn’t just good news for your grocery bill, it’s good news for your mood. As the days brighten, so do we. Many Australians experience the “winter blues,” a dip in mood that’s often linked to shorter daylight hours and dreary weather. In more severe cases, this is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression that tends to hit during the colder, darker months.
Simple snack: Wash and enjoy them as nature intended.
But spring offers a natural antidote, and fresh fruit and vegetables are a big part of that remedy. Bright, colourful produce doesn’t just look cheerful, it’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that nourish your body and mind. Foods like strawberries are rich in vitamin C, which supports your immune system, and antioxidants that fight stress. Plus, the natural sugars in fruit provide a gentle energy lift without the crash of processed sweets. Eating a variety of fresh produce can help balance your mood, boost energy, and improve overall wellbeing, just in time for those longer, sunnier days that make us want to get outside and live a little. Strawberries - The Star of the Season. If there’s a fruit that truly embodies spring, it’s the strawberry. Vibrant, fragrant, and bursting with sweetness, they’re the perfect snack,
Here are a few ideas:-
Breakfast upgrade: Add sliced strawberries to your morning oats, cereal, or yoghurt. Sweet treat: Dip them in melted dark chocolate (I use Nutella) for a dessert that feels indulgent but stays light. Savoury surprise: Toss strawberries into a spinach salad with walnuts and feta for a fresh twist. However you enjoy them, there’s no denying strawberries bring a taste of sunshine to your table. Spring Into Freshness. September is your invitation to shake off the heaviness of winter, on your plate, in your mood, and in your life. With strawberries leading the charge and prices for fruit and veg falling, it’s the perfect time to refresh your diet and embrace the vibrant colours and flavours of the season. So, fill your basket with berries, grab some crisp greens, and let nature work its magic. The days are longer, the air is warmer, and your meals are about to get a whole lot brighter. Because nothing says spring quite like a juicy strawberry and the promise of sunshine in every bite. And where will you find all the produce you need... The Top End Of Gordon St !!! Now you are coming to Port Macquarie and will be visiting the awesome ladies at Florence Jones for High Cheese with Anna. Take us through what this is all about. spread of different D’Affinois cheeses to taste. On the sweeter side, there’ll be Pavlova Choux, cheesecake, and because the ladies requested it, I’ll be frying Loukoumades centre stage and dipping them into triple cream. Most importantly great company with loads of satisfied taste buds.
What can those attending look forward to?
I must ask – as a pastry chef, how did the High Cheese event come about?

when paired right. Being the ambassador for Fromager d’Affinois has opened up so many creative ideas. I wanted to break tradition and show that cheese isn’t just for the end of a meal it can be the meal. What are you most looking forward to about coming to Port Macquarie and holding this event? Meeting the community, working with the Florence Jones team (those ladies are absolute legends!), and soaking up the vibe. I’ve been coming to Port Macquarie for 17 years as my partner is originally from here and I love supporting the local businesses.
What’s one food trend you hope never comes back, and one you’re loving right now?
What’s next for Anna Polyviou any exciting projects or collaborations coming up?
I’m loving that Greek food is having its moment. Fresh, simple flavours with a modern twist - think pistachio, kataifi, all of it. I’m obsessed.
There’s always something exciting happening! After Port Macquarie, I fly to Singapore for an event, then back to the Gold Coast to headline Party Under the Palms with motor cars. There are also some conversations happening around residencies but until contracts are signed, that’s all under wraps. Big refresh coming, though… watch this space.
I love sharing plates as it lets me taste everything, and yes, I always check the menu before I go in and dessert is the first thing I look at. Although funny enough, I don’t usually order dessert I’ll just go for gelato afterwards!
As for what I hope doesn’t come back… let’s just say some gimmicky, over the top trends are best left in the past!
Thanks Anna.
The best fish and chips, Salty Crew Kiosk down by the beach, Baked Culture (my favourite bakery – even if it’s technically in the next town!), plus Jordan’s - I love staying there with my fur baby. I also love Rydges (thanks to them for sponsoring the event with accommodation - massive help!) the pool is an epic overview of Port from above… After the floods I know the Florence Jones ladies were affected, so I wanted to come and show support, be with the legends of Port, and basically just be a local. I feel like one either way as I’m always here and actually feel super honoured to be asked to attend. What’s your ultimate guilty pleasure food? Ice cream always. But since we’re talking cheese, Jax crackers, cheese with honey drizzle & prosciutto makes me very happy. What do you always look for when you dine out? Great company (because food is about sharing), good vibes, and simple food done really well. In the heart of Port Macquarie, a grassroots movement is rolling strong - one kick, push, and connection at a time. CURB LORDZ, led by local skater Andy McLellan and backed by a crew of passionate community legends, is on a mission to keep skate culture alive and thriving across the Mid North Coast. With a focus on inclusion, mental health, and creating positive spaces for young people, their Kick . Push . Connect event series is more than just skate jams, it's a celebration of community, creativity, and connection.

H
i Andy, Tell us about CURB LORDZ and what inspired the Kick . Push . Connect events?
It honestly just started as an idea, like most things do. Port Macquarie has always had a solid skate scene, and I just wanted to do my bit to keep that alive. Kick . Push . Connect is an all-inclusive skate event series welcoming youth and the whole community to connect, skate, and live their best life outdoors. Featuring skate jams, coaching clinics, and chill sessions focused on mental health, connection, and inclusiveness. We’ve teaming up with local businesses and youth services to create positive spaces where young people can build friendships. The locals have been shredding heaps lately, and I thought it’d be cool to give them something to get more hyped about. I can’t 56 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
take all the credit though, so many people have helped pull this together. Who’s behind CURB LORDZ, and what’s the mission? CURB LORDZ is all about community. It wouldn’t be possible without legends like Jimmy, Alex, Dave, Benson from Benson’s Barber Shop, Brad from Grandmaster Vintage, and the crew at Project Distribution. I’m Andy Mclellan, and together with that crew the mission is simple; grow the Hastings skateboarding community and make skate gear more affordable so everyone can get involved. Can you tell us about the three events across the Mid North Coast? We’ve got three jams lined up. The first was held on the 23rd of August at Town Beach Skatepark. The vibe was insane, it was so good to see the park full and everyone joining in. This October we are heading to Lake
Cathie on Halloween Friday 31st October so definitely dress up in your best Halloween costumes for a chance to win some great prizes. The third will be at Wauchope Skatepark, on Saturday 10th January 2026 where Dave Tyson from Sk8 Sense will run a free fundamentals program for beginners and intermediates. We’re so grateful for the amazing support from the local business community who helped bring these events to life! Thanks to their contributions, we were able to get things rolling and keep the stoke alive in the skate scene. • Port City Bowling Club – provided $6,000 to help get the event off the ground. • Bensons Barber Shop – Provided an epic flat bar rail obstacle. • Camden Haven Medical Centre – cash prizes + medical support at every event. • Grand Master Vintage – cash prize for
backing the local skateboarding community and keeping the culture strong!
Hardest Skater. • Epic Burger Shack Laurieton – delicious vouchers for each event. • Born Dry – kept everyone hydrated with bottled water. • Green Plumbing & Gas – backed it up with cash support.
Everyone! Seriously, all ages, all skill levels. If you’ve never dropped in before or you’re out here grinding rails every weekend we encourage everyone to join in and have a great time.
• Lakai Skate Shoes – shoe vouchers for skaters. • Project Distribution, Krooked Skateboarding, DGK, Independent Truck Company, Sunday Hardware Co, Creature, Santa Cruz, Afends, Anti Hero Skateboards, Mental, and Spit Fire – supplied awesome skate products. Without this crew of legends, none of this would have been possible. Thank you for
What else can people expect at the events besides skating? Good vibes, free BBQ, and a bit of everything. Port City is putting on a free BBQ supported by Rotary, there’ll be music, skate products for sale, and just a solid community atmosphere. Who can participate in the Skate Jams?
Everyone! Seriously, all ages, all skill levels. If you’ve never dropped in before or you’re out here grinding rails every weekend we encourage everyone to join in and have a great time. What prizes are up for grabs? Andy: We’ve got heaps, skateboard products, apparel, vouchers, even some cash. Plenty of reasons to get involved. Can people just come along to watch?
100%. The more the merrier. You might even leave wanting to grab a board from CURB LORDZ at Grandmaster Vintage and roll in with us next time. Why are events like this so important for local youth? Because young people need to know the community has their back. Skating gives them something positive to put their energy into, a place to connect, and a crew to feel part of. And how do these jams help the local skateboarding scene grow? By giving the youth more chances to skate, have fun, and make friends. Every event builds the scene a little stronger, and that’s what it’s all about. Thanks guys.
CURB LORDZ EVENTS By the locals, for the locals. It’s skating, community, and good vibes all rolled into one. Whether you’re here to shred, learn, or just hang out, everyone’s welcome. Come down, get amongst it, and help keep the Hastings skate scene alive. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 57

an you tell us a little bit about your childhood where you grew up and what life was like for you as a kid?
I grew up in Brisbane, and from as early as I can remember, sport was a huge part of my life. Whether it was playing or watching, I was always around it, and that love of competition and atmosphere never left me. I also loved listening to sport on the radio and watching it on TV, hearing the broadcasters bring it to life for people had a big impact on me. Where did your love of horse racing first begin? Was it something that ran in the family, or did you discover it on your own? It came from my grandfather. He loved the races, and I was really close to him. I wanted to share his passion, so I started learning and reading as much as I could about racing. That connection with him is what lit the spark for me. What do you remember about the first time you went to the races? My first day at the track was at Doomben for the Doomben 10,000. I remember it like it was yesterday, the noise, the colour, the rush. I was hooked straight away. After that, I found myself at a lot of country race meetings, and I think that’s why I’ve always had such a strong connection with the bush. I’d also often sneak into a local TAB or pub with my Grandad and

i Matt. Your new pie shop in Wauchope has certainly caught people’s attention. What's the story behind the name Phat Phuc Pies?
I had to come up with something a bit edgier than my last business, Chubby Guy Pies. Its slogan was “Wrap your lips around a Chubby Guy” …So Phat Phuc Pie Shop was born. The name has gone viral and sparked plenty of conversation. What’s the most memorable reaction you’ve had so far (good or bad)? They're all pretty memorable. I honestly thought I'd upset a few people but surprisingly not. I’d say 99% of people have commented that they love the name. Phat Phuc translates to "Happy Buddha" in Vietnamese. Can you tell us more about that cultural connection and whether your wife’s heritage influenced the name?
Brisket seems to be what most people are asking for. I smoke all our brisket here on site. Chunks of super tender smoky beef is what you’ll get biting into one of my pies.

Murals, sculptures, bunting, and handcrafted decorations bring a playful, inviting energy to every corner. In 2025, two exciting youth-focused art and music projects will add even more vibrancy.
With support from Arts Mid North Coast, proud Kamilaroi artist Shanara Widders will collaborate with local young people to create striking new stage backdrops. These artworks will not only enhance the festival’s visual magic but will also stand as a testament to cross-cultural creativity and youth empowerment. The second project, supported by a generous local benefactor, will see acclaimed Victorian duo Broken Creek run a weekend music-

making, songwriting, and performance workshop in September. Young participants will have the chance to join the duo on stage during the festival, a truly inspiring opportunity for budding local musicians. Old-Time Music School – Learning from the Masters In the days leading up to the festival, the Old Time Music School offers an immersive learning experience for students eager to connect with the roots of folk and bluegrass traditions. This year’s program will feature legendary mandolinist Mike Compton, a founding member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band and a major contributor to the Grammy Award-winning O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Mike will be joined by Laura Boosinger, an exceptional clawhammer banjo player, both teaching and performing across the weekend. An International Line-Up with Local Soul The 2025 line-up is an exciting blend of talent from Canada, the United States, Scotland, and across Australia. Expect everything from heartfelt singer-songwriters to the driving rhythms of traditional and progressive bluegrass, toe-tapping old-time tunes, and some of the finest musicians working in these genres today. Get Involved – It’s All About
Participation One of the festival’s greatest joys is the many ways you can be part of the action. Join the festival choir (affectionately known as the SINners), play alongside others in the Bluegrass Band, or get your dancing shoes on for one of the lively Workshops run social dances. Workshops run throughout the weekend, offering chances to learn from performing artists, hone your skills, and connect with other music lovers.
throughout the weekend, offering chances to learn from performing artists, hone your skills, and connect with other music lovers.
Families are well catered for too, the kids’ area is a lively, hands-on space filled with songs, games, and musical activities. The blackboard venue gives everyone a chance to step up and share a song or two in a relaxed, welcoming environment, while themed concerts bring together the festival’s best musicians for unforgettable moments on stage. Plan Your Festival Weekend For the full experience, camp on-site and soak in every note, conversation, and sunset. Or, if you prefer, come for a day or two,
either way, you’ll find yourself immersed in a safe, family-friendly, and sustainable event that celebrates connection, creativity, and pure joy. Join Us in 2025
We warmly invite you to make the short journey to Dorrigo and discover why this gem of a festival is loved by so many. Visit www.dorrigofolkbluegrass. com.au to explore this year’s performers, book your tickets, and learn more about the program. Bring your friends, your family, your instruments, and your dancing shoes, this is one weekend you’ll never forget. What’s that I feel on my back as I settle down here to write this month’s Musing? It’s warm, comforting and familiar, but something I haven’t felt for a while… that’s right, it’s a little ray of sunshine!
A
nd it’s something that as a region, we’ve all missed for quite some time now.
Basking in its warm glow this morning, the sun is promising that spring is on its way and hopefully here to stay for a while. The spring edition of Focus is always up there among my favourites. We’re talking spring fashion, Fashion on the Field and of course spring weddings. There’s not much on a fashion calendar that tops these events, and as always I am here for it! There’s often a sense of optimism and positivity as we emerge from our winter hibernation, the time most of us use to rest, recharge and reset for an active few months ahead. For the next 6 months we’re talking weddings, parties and everything in between. In fashion retail this is one of our busiest periods of the year. It’s when we see the fruits of our efforts come to fruition, the choices we made 6 or 12 months ago arriving into store to surprise and delight you, our customer, but it’s also when we hit the showrooms and lock in our selections for what you and I will be wearing next year. Yep, it never ends. This season though we are seeing a huge
66 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
variety when it comes to the inspiration behind the styles that are coming through. As is always the case in fashion there is something for everyone, from the conservative and classic right through to the outrageous and ostentatious, you simply need to identify what you’re looking for and find your people! But what if you don’t really know what your style is any more or are struggling to find the right pieces to suit your personal style this season? It happens, trends come and go and not every season feels like a good fit for everyone. That’s where a little effort on your behalf can pay dividends. I’ve always said it’s important to identify which seasonal trends to admire from a distance and which to embrace in your own unique way. Consider the current Barrel Jean trend for instance. Are Barrel Jeans for everyone? In my humble opinion - no. But does that mean you shouldn’t experiment with them in the privacy and safety of a fitting room, not at all! After all what better place to try on a new style that you are considering, when there is expert advice on hand as well as an endless supply of tops and accessories to try on at the same time. You never know, you may end up loving a new trend, or you may find a more suitable take on the trend, which you will actually wear… now
that’s what I call a fitting room Win! The same principles apply to occasion dressing. There will always be a style to suit everyone when it comes to special occasion dressing, the secret is to be confident in your personal style rather than trying to fit into a genre that simply doesn’t feel right for you. Fashion though should be fun, so trusting a well trained eye and pushing a personal boundary or two could very well set you on a new and exciting path when it comes to the pleasure of getting dressed… So what are we seeing on the shop floor at the moment and what should you be keeping an eye out for this season? Well, right now we’re spotting quite a few spots coming through, which is always a classic when done well… we’re also seeing a lot of bright colourful highly considered patterns emerging once again for high summer, with many Australian designers embracing our long sunny days as inspiration for their collections; think afternoon cocktails by the water under a late setting sun and that’s the vibe in a nutshell. Whether your personal style is classic and considered or quintessentially quirky, you can be sure you’ll be looking and feeling fabulous, no matter the occasion as long as there’s a touch of sun in the mix!

Thank you. The film is a sequel to our first short film produced in Port Macquarie in 2020, Not Enough Time, which won some international awards. Port Macquarie writer and actor Diane Keogh is making waves on the international film festival circuit with her suspenseful short film Conditioned for Love. That was tricky. However, I was very fortunate to have been able to work with well-known Aussie Actor and Acting Coach, Julian Curtis, who guided and advised me through this challenging process, and also made very valuable contributions to our film. Could you tell us a bit about the rest of the local cast and crew, and why it was important for you to shoot the film here in Port Macquarie? Local cast included John Hincks, who saved the day and came on board for us at the last minute when one of our lead cast members became ill. Elizabeth Turner and I were also in the cast.
Local, very talented, Jordan Frith helped us with sound recording. We were privileged to work with three local TAFE graduates, Heath McCabe - Key Hair, Lilli Eather Goodwin - Key Makeup and Jack Cavanagh - Second Assistant Camera. Dannielle Allison and Anthony Grigg from Port TAFE kindly referred these graduates to us and they were brilliant! It was also their first time on a film set! Where are the graduates now? Heath is running his own barber and hairdressing business in Port Macquarie @ hm_hair87, Jack is studying a degree in Media and Communication at Newcastle Uni and Lilli is travelling the world, from a base in London. It was very important for us to shoot the film here in Port Macquarie as there are zero opportunities for film actors and crew here, so I took the initiative to make it happen. We gratefully acknowledge Elizabeth and Ian Turner who made their home available to us for filming and also Port Macquarie Airport and Maisie’s Café. We also worked with actors from Sydney including Genine Raats, Gary Belshaw and Petrell Huang and the Sydney crew were Frank Shiva, Cinematographer/Director/Producer, Ashkan Hashemi, First Assistant Camera/ Focus Puller, Jacinta Marshall-Crouse and Craig Delahoy, Script Editors, and Frank’s colleagues from India, K. Music Director and Anand Govindasamy, Colour Grading and Daisy Angel, Publicity Design.

Conditioned for Love has already gained recognition on the festival circuit. How has it felt to see your work resonate with audiences both locally and internationally? It feels great! We LOVE that film festivals around the world in different countries and cultures appreciate, understand and can resonate with our story! Elizabeth Turner won Best Supporting Actress at the Tamizhagam International Film Festival. What was it like working with her and the rest of the cast?
Elizabeth was also a Director on the film with Frank. Her journey in acting began at the age of 16, continuing a proud legacy as a thirdgeneration performer. Her repertoire spans an impressive range, from serious dramas to lively pantomimes and classic melodramas, showcasing her versatility and passion for the stage. She has been an active member of the Port Macquarie “Night for Murder” group and has appeared in several short films
in addition to this film. As a teacher, Elizabeth directed numerous student productions, nurturing young talent and bringing stories to life in the classroom and on stage. She also lends her skills to Charles Sturt University, supporting allied health students by portraying patients in exam simulations, blending her love of performance with a commitment to education and community service. Everything went very smoothly with the cast and even though all the characters were very quirky, each actor delivered them with aplomb! As both a writer and an actor, was there a particular scene that was most challenging, either emotionally or technically? They were all challenging for me but with Julian’s coaching I relaxed into the acting and learned to take my hand off the creative wheel and live the character on the day. Where can we view the film or find out more? The film will be released on YouTube in 2026. My range covers classic fragrances from Coconut & Lime to some newer, earthier scents such as my personal favourite, Cedarwood & Patchouli.
Can you share with us a little about your inspiring business and your unique product ranges of Indian Sun Candles?
I understand quality and sustainability are a key ethos for you in business. How do you endeavour to ensure production remains at a high level and why are these attributes equally important to you in business?

What have been some of your highlights since embarking on this professional journey and can you tell us some of your favourite products?
It is wedding season in Port Macquarie and surrounds. What products are a perfect gift idea or a great addition for styling decor at weddings and special events?
There have been many wonderful moments since Indian Sun debuted at our first market in Laurieton back in 2021! Becoming Certified Australian Made has certainly been a huge highlight in my business journey. I was also very lucky to partner with The McGrath Foundation in 2024. Trudy Ebsworth from Ebsworth Pots in Camden Haven created a stunning pottery Mastectomy Mug which I filled with scented soy wax to create a candle, raising funds for this amazing foundation. 2024 also saw Indian Sun as a finalist in the Small Business Champion Awards, a title I am extremely proud to hold. I also had the honour of being a vendor at the Sydney Finders Keepers Market Event this year which was two full days of meeting a whole new base of customers. This was a sell out
I have recently released Indian Suns Wedding Range which consists of Wedding Favours for your Guests. You can choose from a range of vessels and fragrance choices. Who inspires you both personally and professionally?
I am extremely blessed to have a phenomenal network of family and friends that support me and encourage my every effort, however my gorgeous children really are the drive behind my hard work. On a professional basis, it's hard not to be inspired by my wonderful friend David Shorter who owns The Propagation Station in North Haven. David is an absolute forcefield and has made huge achievements with his hard work, passion and determination. How can people connect with you and find out more about Indian Sun Candles? FROM THE CURVE COLLECTIVE
… AND SO HAS EVENT SEASON
pring has arrived, the flowers are blooming, and so are the invites. Think vineyard vows, black-tie weddings, race day glamour, business awards, the Town & Country Ball, engagements, parties, and let’s not forget… formals. So Many Formals. But here’s the million-dollar (literally) question, why spend thousands on a designer dress you’ll only wear once, when you can hire one, look just as fabulous, and still afford school lunches for the week?
Vallance, Camilla, Acler, Sheike, Eliya, Sass & Bide, Shona Joy, Zimmerman, the kind of dresses you see online at 2am and almost “add to cart” before remembering the kids’ school fees are due and that looming orthodontist appointment for the youngest. Then there are the new flavours dropping in hot: Gossip Gowns, Derma, Winona, Alemais, Albina Dyla, Misha, Manning Cartel, Natalie Rolt, Arcina Ori, Rat & Boa, with fresh arrivals starting to come in every week. Basically, if you’ve seen it online, there’s a good chance it’s about to land on our racks.
At The Curve Collective, we’ve got racks of designer dresses in sizes 4–24 ready to turn you from “snack slave in the morning to show stopper in the evening”. You know, the one that makes people whisper, “where did she get that dress?” And the best part? You get all the bougie, all the credit, without the scary price tag.
And the Extras? Oh, We’ve Got Extras. We’re not just about the dress. We’ve got you covered from head to toe: fascinators, jewellery, clutches, booby tape, shapewear, clutch glue and heel covers for the stiletto lover attending the niece’s garden wedding. If you need it, we probably have it and if we don’t, we’ll stalk Google to find it for you.
The Perks of Hiring: Designer vibes, no debt. Wear the dress, skip the guilt. No dry cleaning nightmares. Champagne spills? Tan stains? Kids using your hem as a napkin? Hand it back, we’ve got it sorted. Dress-up fun without the wardrobe clutter. Because let’s be honest, most of our cupboards are already 50% Kmart tubs and 50% lounge wear (or is that just me?)
How It Works. Jump online at thecurvecollective.au and book your hire appointment or DM us on socials. We’ll have your size and style ready, and while you’re here, you basically get a free personal styling session and our focus is all on you.
The Brands You Love (and the Ones You’ll Love Next) We’ve got all the ol’ faithfuls you know and adore, AJE, Meshki, Rachel Gilbert, Rebecca
Want to bring the girls? Even better. We’ll set you up with cheese boards and bubbles, and turn the fitting room into a full-blown dress up party, just DM or email to request after hours and we can make it work for you. We love what we do and we love that we get to do it for you.
One Last Thing. Event season doesn’t have to be stressful. Hire the dress, rock the event, return it, and move on to the book week parade without another thought. You’ll look incredible, feel confident, and your bank account will thank you. Because life’s too short for boring dresses and too expensive to buy them all. Oh, and whilst we talking about Spring. Can we just say, spring retail is about to SHINE and we are so excited. Think soft knits, crochet textures, easy neutrals with a pop of colour (because spring time sunshine deserves a little lemon yellow). We’ve got so many new brands coming that you know and love, plus fresh labels you’re about to fall for. And the best bit? We have pieces arriving inclusive sizes 6–24, because style has no size limit. We do our best to source pieces that aren’t just inclusive, but also make you feel confident, beautiful, and ready for anything. The kind of pieces you can wash, wear, and love for seasons to come. We’re finalising all the changes behind the scenes right now, so perhaps when you are reading this, our secrets are out and you can come and say hi to us. Lets get excited for spring time, bring on the fake tans, gym classes back in the diary and suddenly Saturdays have gone from soccer games to that event you thought was still months away. Don’t stress. We live for last minute ladies. We can’t wait to see you in store or online. Hayley x GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 81

The Retinoid Revolution: Your Complete Guide to Vitamin A Skincare
D
We sat down with Dr Kristy Kostalas from PMAC to decode the science behind retinoids and help you navigate the different options available.
r Kostalas, retinoids seem to be everywhere in skincare right now. What exactly are they? Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A, and they're genuinely the most scientifically-proven anti-aging ingredients we have. They work by accelerating cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and regulating oil production. What makes them so effective is that they actually communicate with your skin cells at a genetic level, telling them to behave like younger, healthier cells. There's often confusion between retinoids and retinoic acid. Can you clarify the difference? Think of it as a family tree. Retinoic acid is the active form that your skin actually uses - it's the most potent but also the most irritating. Retinoids are the broader category that includes retinoic acid and its precursors like retinol, retinyl palmitate, and retinaldehyde. These precursors need to be converted by your skin into retinoic acid to work, which makes them gentler but means they take longer to show results. What options do you stock at PMAC for patients wanting to try retinoids? We offer a complete range to suit different skin types and experience levels. For beginners, we stock The Skincare Company's over-the-counter Vitamin A products. Their retinol cream is an excellent starting point - it's formulated at a gentle concentration with stabilising ingredients that minimise irritation while still delivering results.
82 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
For patients ready for the next level, we offer prescription-strength options. Our compounded tretinoin formulations allow us to customize the concentration and add soothing ingredients like niacinamide or hyaluronic acid. We also stock adapalene, which is particularly effective for acne-prone skin, and tazarotene for more advanced antiaging concerns. The "start low and go slow" approach is often mentioned. How does this work in practice? This is crucial for retinoid success. I always tell patients that retinoids are a marathon, not a sprint. With our over-thecounter options like The Skincare Company's Vitamin A, I recommend starting with just twice a week application for the first month. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin, then follow with a good moisturizer. After your skin adjusts - usually 4-6 weeks you can increase to every other night, then eventually nightly use. With prescription retinoids, we start even more conservatively. Some patients begin with once or twice weekly application of a lower concentration, gradually building up tolerance over 3-4 months. What should people expect when starting retinoids? The "retinoid reaction" is completely normal. You might experience some dryness, mild peeling, or irritation in the first few weeks. This isn't damage - it's your skin adjusting to increased cell turnover. The key is patience and proper support with gentle
cleansers and good moisturisers. Most patients see initial improvements in skin texture within 6-8 weeks, but the real magic happens around the 3-4 month mark when collagen production really kicks in. Fine lines soften, pore appearance improves, and skin tone becomes more even. Any final advice for someone considering retinoids? Don't go it alone. Whether you're starting with our over-the-counter options or considering prescription strength, a consultation helps ensure you choose the right product and use it correctly. At PMAC, we create personalized protocols that maximise benefits while minimising irritation. Remember, retinoids make your skin more sun-sensitive, so daily SPF is non-negotiable. And be patient - good skin is a long-term investment, but retinoids are the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth in a bottle. For more information about retinoid options at PMAC or to book a skincare consultation with Dr Kristy Kostalas, visit portmedicalaestheticsclinic.com.au or call 0421 253 025

FROM WOMEN’S HEALTH PHYSIO/ PHYSIO COLLECTIVE
Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week is an annual national campaign in Australia and has grown into the country’s largest initiative focusing on the health and wellbeing of women.
H
eld in the first week of September each year, it encourages women to “say yes to you” - in other words, to speak up about health concerns, check in on their own wellbeing, and make their health a priority. This dedicated week is a prompt for women to pause and put themselves first when it comes to health.
lifesaving, as it can detect early changes that might lead to cervical cancer and allow for timely treatment. Doctors stress that cervical screening should not be delayed or forgotten, since early detection offers the best chance of a positive outcome. If it has been a few years since the last test, Women’s Health Week is a good reminder to book it.
Amid busy schedules and caregiving roles, women often put the needs of loved ones before their own health. As a result, routine check-ups or self-care can fall by the wayside. Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week serves as a reminder for women to reflect on their health - to consider any appointments or preventive screenings they may have missed and to take action on those now. Simply taking time to think about one’s health status is a valuable first step. It might mean asking: “When was my last health check, and am I due for another?”
It’s also a perfect time to schedule other routine checks. For instance, having your blood pressure checked regularly is important, since high blood pressure often has no symptoms but can quietly increase the risk of heart disease or stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among Australian women, so keeping an eye on blood pressure and heart health is critical. Simple checks like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar can help catch issues early and prevent more serious problems down the track. A quick visit to the GP for a general check-up can set your mind at ease or flag any areas that need attention.
Regular preventive health checks are essential to catch potential problems early. Health experts emphasise that routine screenings are “such an important part of disease prevention” and can improve overall wellbeing. One key example is the Cervical Screening Test. This quick test is potentially
Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week also encourages open conversations about mental and physical wellbeing. Looking after your mind is just as important as caring for your body, so mental health is a key part of overall health. Women are encouraged to check in on their mental wellbeing - for example, to
acknowledge feelings of stress, anxiety or low mood - and to talk to someone if they need support. Speaking with a GP or a counselor can be an important step if things feel overwhelming. Likewise, no physical symptom should be brushed off or suffered in silence. The campaign emphasises that persistent pain or health issues should not be dismissed as “just part of being a woman” – women don’t have to simply push through alone . If something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to speak up and seek medical advice. Topics that might sometimes feel private or trivial, such as menstrual changes, menopause symptoms or any chronic discomfort, are all worth discussing with a health professional. Often, these conversations lead to solutions or treatments that greatly improve quality of life. Overall, Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week takes a clear, practical approach: it reminds women to invest time in their own health through small but vital actions like making that doctor’s appointment or having that necessary conversation. By focusing on preventive checks and honest discussions, women can take proactive steps toward better health. JASON WILLIAMSON H
i Jason. Most people celebrate their 50th with cake, but you're running 4,000km across Australia. What inspired you to take on something so extraordinary to mark this milestone? Turning 50 felt like a call to do something bold. Not only to mark my age, but to celebrate growth - mentally, emotionally and physically. Running across Australia is the biggest challenge I’ve taken on, but it’s also a powerful way to spotlight mental fitness - a concept that’s changed my life. Last year I completed The Ireland Way, 1030km in 14 days, and set the Fastest Known Time (FKT). That experience showed me what I was capable of. This run across Australia is the evolution of that journey. Just seven years ago you hadn’t run more than 15km. Can you take us back to that turning point in your life, what led you to lace up your runners for the first time? Seven years ago, I was completely consumed by work. I wasn’t taking care of myself physically or mentally. I started by running 84 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
Jason Williamson is running 4,000 km right across Australia, from Perth to his hometown in Port Macquarie, to raise awareness and funds for mental fitness charities Gotcha4Life and A Lust for Life. takes you through some of Australia’s most remote and challenging landscapes. What part of the journey are you most nervous or excited about?
Before long, I was taking on ultra-distances, pushing my limits, and to my surprise, winning major events.
I’m both nervous and excited about the Nullarbor. It’s incredibly remote, just you and the road, for hours and days. The Australian outback adds another layer with its heat, flies and vast emptiness. It’ll be tough, but those are usually the defining moments.
You’ve spoken about how running became a tool not just for physical fitness, but for mental clarity and wellbeing. What have you learned about your own mental fitness through running? Running taught me how to sit with discomfort, both physically and mentally. It’s become a moving meditation. I don’t run to escape, I run to be present. That was especially true during The Ireland Way FKT, where I faced extreme fatigue and stress but didn’t let it break me. Resilience, I’ve learned, isn’t about always feeling strong - it’s about staying in the fight, one step at a time, even when everything hurts. Mental fitness matters just as much as physical strength. Your route from Perth to Port Macquarie
You’ll be running the equivalent of two marathons a day for 50 days. How have you prepared your body and mind for this kind of endurance? It takes time! I’ve been training with an ultra-endurance coach, focusing on volume, recovery, nutrition and mental strategies. My experience running The Ireland Way taught me a lot about pacing, fuelling under stress, pushing through fatigue and more. That 14-day effort gave me the blueprint for how to prepare my body and mind for something even bigger. You’ve chosen to raise awareness and funds for Gotcha4Life. It’s something I care deeply about. I want to use the platform running has given me to spark more open, honest conversations about mental health and mental fitness. What message do you hope people, especially those struggling with their own challenges, take away from your journey?

hether you are working from home or in an office, in a centre, on the road or in a shed, the workplace reality for many can be fast-paced with a need to meet deadlines, attend to communications and navigate change and uncertainty. Work-related stress can cause anxiety, lead to burn out and negatively impact one’s mental and physical well-being and one’s ability to communicate with others. It is not so much that we experience stress, but rather, how we respond to it that matters. Mindfulness is a very effective tool to help manage work-related stress, increase focus, facilitate problem-solving, foster improved communications and a more positive and supportive work environment.

India’s The Mid North Coast Indian Association celebrates
Independence Day
The Mid North Coast Indian Association is a vibrant local community in the region bringing together people to celebrate the rich tapestry of Indian culture through food, dance and music. i everyone. Thank you for speaking with Focus and congratulations on the success of MNCIA’s recent cultural event to honour and celebrate Indian heritage. Can you sum up the event for us? Thank you Sarah. It was a truly heartwarming celebration of Indian culture and community spirit. Our India Independence Day cultural event at St Joseph’s Regional College brought together families and friends from the Indian diaspora, as well as supporters from the local business community. The evening featured vibrant dance performances, traditional music, authentic Indian 92 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
cuisine, and a powerful sense of unity. It was inspiring to witness both the Indian community and the broader local community come together to celebrate and honour India’s rich cultural heritage. I understand there was an array of prizes won and supporting sponsors involved. Can you highlight some of the contributions made by key sponsors and supporters of the event? Absolutely! We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors and supporters who made the event possible. A special thanks to our major sponsors including Greg Bates (Lifestyle Group), Dr.
Hema Keshav (our very own President), Impact Prints and Sovereign Hills Land Sales and a few anonymous sponsors including Dr Arun Maram (Rehabilitation Medicine Physician), Macleay Options, Rubikant from Bridgestone/Liberty in Laurieton, who provided financial and logistical support. We also had generous contributions from local businesses who donated prizes to help us raise funds for the association. We sincerely thank Waters Edge, Rydges, Cassegrain and Horizon Golf Course Port Stephens for donating prizes valued at $500 each. We also had generous vouchers donated by Rocksalt, Alicia Maree Fitness, SilverQuinn Productions, The Bowl, Springloaded, Hydro Golf, Stony

Their involvement truly elevated the event, and it was heartening to see so many local organisations championing cultural inclusion and celebration.
to participating in local festivals and collaborating with schools and councils on multicultural projects, each event has helped us grow. We’ve also had youth talent showcases, community sports days, new student engagement days and interfaith dialogues that have fostered deeper understanding and friendship across cultures.
Our vision is to build an inclusive, diverse, and cohesive community where Indian culture is celebrated and respected as part of the broader multicultural fabric of the Mid North Coast.
How important is it for you to be able to share your joyous culture with the community and can you share the central vision of MNCIA? Sharing our culture is at the heart of everything we do at MNCIA. It’s not just about celebration. It’s about education, connection, and fostering mutual respect. Our vision is to build an inclusive, diverse, and cohesive community where Indian culture is celebrated and respected as part of the broader multicultural fabric of the Mid North Coast. We want to provide a platform for cultural expression, while also engaging meaningfully with the wider community.
What is on the horizon for the organisation going forward? We’re excited for the future! Our upcoming plans include a large-scale Diwali celebration later this year, cultural workshops in schools, and a focus on youth engagement through dance and sports programs. We’re also exploring partnerships with other community groups
to promote intercultural exchange. Most importantly, we want to continue strengthening community ties and encouraging secondgeneration Indian-Australians to stay connected to their heritage. The aim is to help new families and students from the Indian diaspora feel more connected to the community with structured events they can attend at no cost or a very subsidised cost. For people interested in being part of or joining the group or volunteering their time and skills, how can they get in touch? We warmly welcome new members and volunteers. eld at the Glasshouse, the four-day event featured over 50 workshops, presentations and field trips. Attendees also enjoyed impressive trade displays and plenty of opportunities to connect and collaborate. The conference was opened by Mayor Adam Roberts, with keynote speakers, Dr Pete Turner from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and Dr Marion Healy, the independent Biosecurity Commissioner. PMHC Biosecurity Officer Matt Bell also ran a session on biosecurity blind spots. He shares his insights below. What are some of the unique challenges in weed management for a coastal town like Port Macquarie Hastings? Our region is blessed with great growing conditions year-round. Unfortunately, this means that weeds grow too! More than any other part of NSW, the north coast region has a huge variety of weeds that we have to deal with, and new ones keep popping up. Protecting our unique ecosystems here on the

coast is a big challenge, especially in the face of extreme weather events which create the disturbance that weeds use to establish. Farmers and land managers in our hinterland are also faced with a difficult balancing act to keep their businesses running efficiently while dealing with the ever-present threat of weeds to their crops and livestock.
and many others which demonstrated just how hard so many people are working to improve weed management outcomes across the state.
What were some of the highlights of the event?
What is your favourite part of the job?
Events like the NSW Weeds Conference are crucial to long-term initiatives that protect our region’s rich biodiversity. The conference was a great opportunity to collaborate, share best practices and build stronger industry partnerships. The keynote speakers were all highly informative, presenting on some big topics ranging from biosecurity policy to tropical weed eradication, fire ecology, and the need for greater community involvement in weed management. We had presentations from local and state government weed officers, government and university researchers, CSIRO, the National Herbarium of NSW, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, dedicated community volunteers
We also had the opportunity to honour our most dedicated colleagues through a range of awards. It was amazing to hear about the achievements of all the nominees and inspiring to know that we are all working toward a common goal. My favourite part of the job is providing advice and assistance to members of our community who are doing their best to manage invasive weeds. I have the privilege of meeting so many landholders and community members from across the area, hearing their stories and doing what I can to help them manage land. J
ames, you live and breathe golf and when you aren’t playing golf yourself, you are inspiring others to take up the sport. How old were you when you first picked up your set of clubs and was it love at first swing? I was three when I first picked up a club. When Dad went out to play golf socially after work my Mum would pass me over the fence on the first hole to him and I would follow him around for the afternoon. He purchased an old 8 iron and had it cut down for me and I would just hit that over and over again. So the obsession started very young in the small country town of Boorowa and yes, it was pretty much love at first swing. Was pro golf always the dream? Can you share the moment that you realised that you could truly turn your sporting passion into a professional international career? Yes, as a youngster the dream was always to play golf professionally. I idolised Greg Norman as a young kid and wanted to be just like him, so I always had a club in my hand and I wasn’t far away from the golf course wherever we were living at the time. We moved around a lot when I was young for my father’s work and by the time I was 14 we had moved house 14 times. Golf was a very stable environment for
me, so too was my home life, don’t get me wrong, but I also always felt at home when on any golf course. I can’t really pinpoint any one moment that turned my passion into a career. I just knew that I loved the sport so much that I was always going to do something in the golf industry. At age 12 I started to experience competition golf with the men at Dubbo Golf Club. We started travelling for junior competitions at about the same time and saw some pretty good results against others my age from all over NSW. I think that as soon as we saw that I was pretty competitive that there could be a future in the game in some way. The sport has taken you to many places around the country and even internationally and back again to Port Macquarie. Can you share the story behind the most memorable tournament you played in? I have only played in a couple of events internationally, but I have played many throughout the country. The first International event was the Tahiti Open. When I chose to play in this, I paid to take Dad along with me as a caddy to thank him for all the trips that he took me on as a child chasing my passion. So it wasn’t a memorable tournament for the result but more for the sentiment and time spent with Dad.
As a driving force of the Swing Fit program you have introduced hundreds of women aged 15 to 86 and of all skill levels to the joys (and occasional frustration) of golf. Can you share how the program works and what keeps the clients coming back?
in their love of the sport - can you give us an insight into some of the locations and trips you have enjoyed with the golf grads?

Conversely, what was your greatest challenge? Watching my two beautiful boys grow up to be nice young men is my greatest personal achievement. Professionally the greatest achievement was winning the National Club Professional of the year in 2021. I had put in a lot of hard work and sacrificed a great deal for that result. Seeing more than 100 women join the Port Macquarie Golf Club at some stage is a great achievement and I am proud of playing a role in that. My greatest challenge is juggling my time. Fatherhood

s we approach Father’s Day, we take a moment to honour the steadfast influence of fathers and father figures in our lives. Whether it's a biological dad, a stepfather, a grandfather, an uncle, or even our teachers, teachers aides, and sports coaches, many of us can think of someone who’s made a big difference just by being there for us. There’s something unique about the role of a father, and although they are rarely spoken about, we have deep feelings for our fathers, especially in quiet moments of support. A father’s love doesn’t always make headlines and it might not come with grand gestures or long speeches, but we’ve seen them in everyday things. They show up. They listen, and they stand by when things get tough. These quiet moments of support are powerful and lasting. Studies continue to show that an engaged and loving father figure makes a significant difference in a child’s life, and especially in their educational success. Children who have consistent father figures tend to develop greater confidence and are better equipped to handle life’s challenges. Being a great dad doesn’t mean they have to be perfect. Far from it. In fact, one of the most powerful gifts a father can offer is the ability to model humility, patience, and persistence. In our Catholic tradition, St Joseph stands as a beautiful example of this quiet strength. He

rust and confidence in your lawyer, doctor or accountant is vital and can take time to build. It is difficult to avoid the need for a doctor or accountant on a regular basis but the need for a lawyer can be quite haphazard. It might be years between visits, and a lot can change in that time. A robust law practice needs to have longevity and diversity to ensure that they can continue to deliver for their clients’ varying needs over decades. Priest Legal has both of these qualities having practised in the local area for more than 50 years. We are proud of the staff whose talents we have been able to nurture over the years to look after our clients’ needs regardless of the changes that may arise. NAVIGATING THE CHANGES TO THE FIRST HOME BUYER GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE SCHEME: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OCTOBER 1, 2025
s we enter the spring season and the housing market continues to evolve, the Australian government is backing up their promise to help more first homebuyers achieve their home ownership dreams. Effective from October 1, 2025, 3 months earlier than expected, significant changes are set to take place in the First Homebuyer Government Guarantee Scheme, a program designed to assist eligible buyers enter the property market. Understanding these changes is crucial for prospective homeowners planning their financial futures so stick with me as we talk through some of these exciting changes. What is the First Homebuyer Government Guarantee Scheme? Initiated in 2020, the First Homebuyer Government Guarantee Scheme aims to make home ownership more accessible by allowing eligible first-time buyers and those who haven’t owned property in the last 10+ years to purchase a home with a deposit as low as 5%, without the need for lenders mortgage insurance (LMI). The government guarantees a portion of the loan, reducing the risk for lenders and enabling buyers to save on pricey LMI premiums. Key Changes to the Scheme as at 1 October 2025 No Income Caps: One of the most significant
changes coming in October is the abolishment of income limits for applicants. Previously capped at $125,000 for singles and $200,000 for couples, the adjustment aims to reflect the rising cost of living and the increasing prices of homes, making the scheme more accessible to a wider range of first-time buyers. No Place Limits: Unlike 2025-26 where there were a combined 50,000 places available across the First Home Guarantee, Regional Home Guarantee & the Family Home Guarantee, unlimited places means that all Australian first home buyers who have saved a 5% deposit can apply. Expanded Property Price Caps: In addition to income limits, the property price caps are also set to increase. In NSW, as of October 1, capital cities and regional centres including Illawarra, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie price caps will increase from $900,000 to $1,500,000 while all other areas of NSW will increase from $750,000 to $800,000 respectively. This is aimed to help home buyers where property prices have increased. For details on other states price caps please refer to housingaustralia.gov.au for more information. Simpler Access in Regional Areas: The government will place a greater emphasis on supporting regional homebuyers through the scheme as the Regional First Home Buyer Guarantee will be replaced by the First Home Guarantee. The government aims to streamline paperwork and improve access to information,
MONEY with BEC FARNSWORTH ensuring that prospective buyers are wellinformed and can navigate the process with ease. The focus on regional properties may encourage buyers to explore options outside major cities, where prices tend to be more manageable. This shift could not only ease pressure on urban housing markets but also foster growth in regional communities. These changes come at a crucial time as rising property prices have created a barrier for first time buyers to enter the market. The removal of income limits and increase in property price caps are particularly significant, as they allow more individuals and couples to qualify for the scheme and achieve the Australian dream of home ownership. With careful planning and awareness of the new criteria, aspiring homeowners can better position themselves to take advantage of this valuable support. So, as the implementation date approaches, potential homebuyers should prepare by assessing their financial situation, understanding the eligibility criteria, and considering their long-term goals. Further information about the scheme can be found on the Housing Australia website. Engage with a mortgage broker who can provide valuable insights and help navigate the complexities of the homebuying process. If you would like to discuss how you can achieve your home ownership goals, then reach out at farnsworthfinancial.com.au or via socials. EMPOWERING FUTURES, ONE S T U D E N T AT A T I M E Helen and John Ross - patrons of HEF
The Hastings Education Fund (HEF) has long stood as a quiet but powerful force for change in our local community.
A
s a proud chapter of the Country Education Foundation of Australia, HEF is committed to supporting young people from the Port Macquarie Hastings region who are transitioning from high school to tertiary education, apprenticeships, or training. Since its inception, HEF has helped over 400 local students overcome the geographic, financial, and social barriers in the pursuit of further education. At the heart of HEF’s work is a simple yet powerful belief: that every young person deserves the opportunity to achieve their ambitions, regardless of postcode or income. By providing grants to assist with accommodation, transport, laptops, textbooks, or other vital needs, HEF gives local students the tools to succeed, right from their very first steps beyond high school. This community-driven initiative relies on the generosity of local sponsors, donors, and volunteers who recognise that investing in our youth is investing in the future of the Hastings region and the results speak for themselves. Many HEF alumni are now thriving in careers across healthcare, education, engineering,
science, business, finance, law and the arts, a testament to what can be achieved when we back the potential of our young people.
serving as a senior lecturer at City St George’s University in London, one of the UK’s leading institutions for medical training.
One such story belongs to Nathan Ross, a remarkable HEF recipient whose journey from Port Macquarie student to London paramedic and university lecturer exemplifies the purpose and impact of our work.
His most recent academic pursuit is a Postgraduate Certificate in Health and Biomedical Education, deepening his expertise in medical teaching and curriculum development. It’s a testament to his lifelong learning mindset, a value that HEF proudly promotes.
Nathan Ross grew up in a loving family that eventually settled in Port Macquarie after time spent in Bathurst. He attended St Joseph’s Primary School and later graduated from St Joseph’s Regional College in 2013. Like many regional students, Nathan was eager to continue his education but faced the financial burden that often accompanies post-school study. That’s where the Hastings Education Fund stepped in. With the help of HEF, Nathan began a Bachelor of Paramedicine at Charles Sturt University’s Port Macquarie campus. He graduated in 2016 and, true to his adventurous spirit, immediately took on an international challenge: moving to London, England to work on the frontline as a paramedic. However, Nathan’s journey didn’t stop there. A natural educator and communicator, he found a new passion in teaching. He now splits his time between working as a frontline paramedic and

Nathan Ross is just one of many HEF alumni who are making their mark in the world. Each year, HEF receives applications from talented, determined young people across the region, and with the help of local businesses, service clubs, schools, and individuals, we are able to support their journeys. As we look to the future, the need for community support is greater than ever. With rising education costs, regional students still face significant disadvantages when pursuing further education. But with your help, we can continue to turn those challenges into success stories. By contributing to the Hastings Education Fund, whether as a donor, sponsor, or volunteer, you become a part of this remarkable legacy of empowerment and achievement. Together, we are shaping the future of our region, one student at a time.

Collins W Collins began in 2003 when Derek returned from Sydney to work alongside James’ employer, the beloved local architect John Walsh.
fter John Walsh's tragic passing, brothers Derek and James Collins suddenly found themselves without work. Determined to keep doing what they loved, and with the support of their wives, Shannon and Tamika, they started Collins W (Walsh) Collins from James’ kitchen, at a makeshift desk fashioned from two sawhorses and a hollow core door. Running a family business has brought unique challenges. With work and home so closely intertwined, conversations about projects often spill into everyday life, over breakfast, during school pick-ups, or late at night. Finding a clear division between work and personal time can be difficult, but it’s a dynamic the family has learned to navigate. At the heart of the business is a deeply held value: family comes first. This principle not only guides the family personally but extends
to their team as well. Whether it’s attending school assemblies, sports days, or family milestones, everyone is encouraged to be present for what matters most. Each family member plays a hands-on role. Derek and James lead the creative direction, designing everything from bespoke homes to commercial spaces. Tamika is an accredited NatHERS assessor taking care of all the energy assessments in house while Shannon oversees the day to day operations of all three offices, Port Macquarie, Taree, and Kempsey ensuring they run efficiently and cohesively. Over the years, Collins W Collins has evolved from two people at a kitchen table into a multi-award-winning firm with a team of more than 20. The journey has included contributions from their children, support from their Mum/mother-in-law, and the development of a close-knit team that feels like an extended family.
There isn’t a perfect separation between business and family life, and the founders are okay with that. As Shannon puts it, they had never run a company before, so they’re learning together as they go. Much like parenting, there’s no handbook, just experience, challenges, and heart. What they’re most proud of isn’t just the growth or the accolades, it’s their commitment to staying true to their values. Above all, family continues to come first, both for themselves and for the people who work alongside them.

HELLO SUNSHINE: GETTING OUR HOMES READY FOR SPRING
aven’t we all had enough of the rain? It feels like it’s been pouring forever here on the Mid North Coast, and while the gardens are loving it, most of us are hanging out for some real sunshine. There’s nothing like those first warm days of spring, throwing the doors open, letting the breeze drift through, and finally feeling like the heaviness of winter has lifted. Spring is such a good excuse to give your home a refresh. It doesn’t have to be expensive or overwhelming, just a few simple tweaks can make everything feel brighter, lighter, and ready for the season ahead. Here are some of my favourite ways to get your home spring-ready. Start with a Clean Slate After all that wet weather, our homes can feel a little damp and cluttered. Start by flinging open the windows on a sunny day and letting the fresh air do its thing. Then, give your place a proper tidy: put away heavy winter throws, wash the blankets that have been living on the couch, and pack away the bulky coats. Clean your windows too, when the sun shines again, you’ll be amazed at how much lighter and brighter your rooms will feel. Add a Pop of Colour We’ve had enough grey skies, now’s the time for colour! You don’t need to repaint walls 110 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
or renovate; just swap out a few accessories. Think cushions in soft pastels, fresh green tones, or even bold, cheerful patterns. A lightweight throw tossed over the sofa, a colourful rug in the hallway, or even a new lampshade can make a room feel completely different. It’s about creating that little spark of joy every time you walk in. Bring in the Blooms If your garden has exploded with greenery after the rain, bring some of it inside. A vase of fresh flowers on the dining table, a jug of cut greenery on the kitchen bench, or even just a bowl of bright lemons adds instant life. Indoor plants are also a winner, ferns, monsteras, and peace lilies thrive right now, and they add that lush, fresh feeling we’re all craving. Lighten the Load Swap out those cosy winter layers for lighter fabrics. Crisp cotton or linen sheets, sheer curtains that let in the breeze, and lighter bed covers all help your home feel cooler and fresher. Even changing a few pillowcases or tea towels to lighter colours makes a difference. It’s amazing how much these small changes can shift the whole mood of a space. Give Outdoor Spaces Some Love Let’s be honest, most of us have neglected our decks and patios with all the rain. Now’s the time to sweep away the cobwebs, wash
down the furniture, and add some colour with outdoor cushions or pots of flowers. Think of it as setting up your second living room, perfect for lazy weekend brunches or evening drinks as the days get longer. Fresh Scents for a Fresh Season There’s something special about the way spring smells, clean, floral, and full of promise. Bring that indoors with scented candles or diffusers. A few of my favourites are citrus, jasmine, eucalyptus and peppermint, they’re light, uplifting and make a home feel instantly fresher and more welcoming. Keep It Simple The best part about preparing for spring is that it doesn’t take much. Rearrange a room to create more space, swap artwork around, or add a few clay pots to a shelf. Little touches can have a big impact. The goal is to create a home that feels light, relaxed, and ready to enjoy after months of hibernating. After all this rain, I think we’re all more than ready to soak up the sunshine and spend more time outdoors. By giving your home a quick seasonal refresh, you’ll not only make it look better, you’ll feel better too.
