Spring has sprung, Halloween is around the corner and Mariah Carey is defrosting as we speak... October is here!
A big congratulations to Lou Perri on an incredible 20 years of The Stunned Mullet! He has definitely built himself an icon there and he really does deserve all the credit that he gets. Lou has been supporting FOCUS since we opened our doors and we are also coming up to our 20 year anniversary. He has never missed an edition with his advert or his column which is a fave amoung our readers (just ask him lol). We have been trying to get this man on our cover for years but he didn’t
want to do it without his team, (due to the fact he is so humble and has said he’s nothing without his team) BUT WE did it, we talked him into it, and it’s definitely a show stopper! Lou’s not only a legend in the local food scene but also a great sport. Thanks Lou, you deserve a cover and we are so glad you said yes. Congratulations again and thank you for always supporting our magazine.

THE STUNNED MULLET
LOU PERRI
For two decades, The Stunned Mullet has been serving up more than just world-class dining, it’s been creating unforgettable experiences on the shores of Port Macquarie’s Town Beach. As the restaurant celebrates 20 years, owner Lou Perri reflects on the journey from its humble beginnings to becoming one of the region’s most celebrated culinary destinations.
Hi Lou. Take us back to 2005, what inspired you to open The Stunned Mullet on Town Beach?
That’s a good question… have you got all day? First visited Port Macquarie in 2001 and the wheels were in motion 24 years ago-we were keen to do something just not sure what that was. Spent the next four years looking at various propositions between Sydney and Brisbane and in early 2005 this amazing site in the newly built Sandcastles building, across
the road from Town Beach came up. It was a no brainer in terms of the location and possibilities of the locale.
As first time hospitality operators we were learning as we went and at first we thought to try a little bit of everything – and I mean everything.
How has the restaurant evolved from those early days into the iconic dining destination it is today?
The Stunned Mullet circa 2005 was an entirely different beast to what it is today.
As first time hospitality operators we were learning as we went and at first we thought to try a little bit of everything – and I mean
everything. Breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week, plus we served up an afternoon/evening tapas and cocktail menu.
The days were long, the learning curve was steep and we were so busy. Thrown in the deep end, but somehow we managed to stay afloat!
The current proposition we have today is more towards a casual, fine dining approach which evolved somewhat organically after a few years of figuring out what worked and where we wanted position ourselves.
The location itself is extraordinary, how do you think the backdrop of Town Beach and Point Plomer shapes the dining experience?
Absolutely, the iconic location is what had us under its spell from the get go. We pinch ourselves every day that we get to work here. Only issue is trying to resist the temptation to go for a quick dip in the aquamarine paradise across the road in the middle of service!
Your menu is known for its international influences. Where do you draw inspiration from when creating new dishes?
As a team we all have adventurous palates and love to explore the culinary landscape whenever we get the chance. We love to travel and see what’s out there. Inspiration is everywhere- whether it’s new and exciting ingredients, combinations or cooking methods there’s always more to learn and build upon.
What do the awards and recognitions you’ve consistently received over the years, from the Chefs Hat to TripAdvisor’s Best of the Best, mean to you and your team?
We are mostly just very humbled to have received such incredible accolades however for the team it’s really a testament to all their amazing work and talent. For us it’s a way to know that we’re on the right track, however it’s also so important to not get caught up in the cycle of awards and needing to be awarded- it was never about that for us.
We were very excited to be able to host two Winemakers dinners with Justin Bubb of Pooley Wines and Max Marriot of Clarence House Wines which were absolutely wonderful.
“enthusiast” for many years. This, as many will know has taken on a life of its own and over time I’ve been fortunate enough to be to able to build some strong connections with producers and importers and hence been in a position to continue to grow my offering of fine and rare wines.
What do you believe keeps people coming back, locals and visitors alike?
We were very excited to be able to host two Winemakers dinners with Justin Bubb of Pooley wines and Max Marriot of Clarence House wines which were absolutely wonderful. We then did a ‘BYO’ like it’s 2005 dinner, where our guests had the opportunity to raid their own cellars treasures alongside a beautiful 6 course dinner. It was a truly special 3 nights of celebration where we welcomed so many of our guests from both past and present. With 20 years now under your belt, and so many achievements already, what plans do you have for the future of The Stunned Mullet?
The Stunned Mullet’s wine list has also consistently achieved the highest accolades, what goes into curating such a world-class collection?
The wine aspect has been another massive aspect of our evolution over the past 20 years. I’ve personally been extremely passionate about wine and have been an
I think it’s the consistency of the overall proposition that our guests know they can rely upon, whether it’s their favorite dish or the personal service they receive from our team that elevates their experience- it all helps build the rapport that is truly special. How will you be celebrating two decades of The Stunned Mullet?
We’ve just come off the back of a huge 3 nights of celebrations in September.
There’s so much in store. We just last week launched our new online wine store ‘The Stunned Mullet Wine’ with a bit of taster of some curated 6 packs of wine from some amazing producers. Stay tuned for more on the way- we are on a roll now! We are also excited about opening up our private dining and cellar next door in the near future which will open up new possibilities for bespoke events and wine experiences for our guests.
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Wilderluxe Lake Keepit?
What sparked the idea?
The concept was born from this idea of really elevating the glamping inside some of our holiday parks to make them unique sanctuaries - separate to the main parks in very, very special places, and Lake Keepit is the first one. This is where the idea was born. From walking on the ridge line and just imagining how extraordinary it could be - looking over the lake and bring glamping to the fore.
How would you describe the Wilderluxe experience to someone who’s never tried glamping before? It is an experience that essentially cocoons you in nature – from the vast lake to the big starry skies – and in luxury accommodation with all the little touches that make a trip memorable. You will find it hard to leave.
What makes Wilderluxe different from other luxury retreats or glamping sites in Australia? Set on the ridge of a lake, Wilderluxe offers an incredible setting to enjoy Big Sky Country – at night, there is no light pollution, allowing guests to star gaze from their bed or bath. Another “extra” is
the chance to enjoy the Big Sky Dreaming Experience including sunset drinks and nibbles and an Aboriginal astronomy film that blends indigenous and Western astronomy in an experience narrated by local elder Len Waters. You mention that guests have the freedom to curate their own unique getaway. Can you give us examples of how they can do that? Wilderluxe Lake Keepit is located a short drive from the thriving regional hubs of Tamworth and Gunnedah, where visitors can explore and indulge in their interests, be that shopping or art to food. If guests wish to relax at Wilderluxe, they have access to bikes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards for some gentle exercise, can take a stroll lakeside or soak in their star bath on the deck of their accommodation. Alternatively, they might like to book a cooking lesson with local chef Jan Dircks at Carroll’s Gap Farmhouse. How do you cater to different types of travellers, couples, friends, or groups booking out the whole site? Wilderluxe Lake Keepit is designed to accommodate every traveller – from the couple or sole traveller who is seeking one Star Gazing Tent to switch off, to a group or family or friends who book each of the Star Gazing Tents on site. There is a communal fire pit and Lounge area, so those
travelling in small groups or alone have the chance to connect with others if they choose. Can you tell us more about the design of the tents or accommodations? What can guests expect in terms of comfort and style? Each Star Gazing Tent is made in Australia and is unique to any offering in New South Wales. The tents are designed to take your stay to the next level and include a window above the bed so you can stargaze or wake up to the Milky Way. Each tent has a wide deck with views across the lake, a star bath and barbecue. Unlike a homogenous hotel room, each tent is slightly different in its styling. The soft furnishings are from an incredible local designer, with a luxury feel akin to being in someone’s home rather than a hotel. The tents are for two people however they are really generously sized – as are the arm chairs in the room, near the king bed. There are small touches that make it special –from binoculars to the record player and yoga mats. All things which encourage our guests to unplug and be really present. What amenities or touches are included to elevate the stay to a “premium” glamping experience? Not only are the furnishings of the highest standard and everything has been thoughtfully curated, but the guest
LAKE KEEPIT
experience is also considered high touch. Our team is focused on getting to know our guests in a way that means we can anticipate their needs and deliver beyond expectation. Our team takes great pride in creating memorable moments for each guest whether this be a birthday or anniversary, we go above and beyond to create space for our guests to reconnect and celebrate. We also have a localised food offering. Our breakfast welcome pack consists of local produce straight from the farm and freshly baked sourdough bought especially for you. You can also order meat packs from the local butcher or enjoy a picnic pack prepared by the nearby Reflections Holidays cafe known as The Canteen.
How much flexibility do guests really have when planning their stay? Can they tailor meals, schedules, or experiences? Wilderluxe Lake Keepit is designed for guests to either check in and stay put to focus on relaxing or check in and check out to explore. Whatever choice they make, our staff will assist to make their stay really special.
Do you see Wilderluxe as part of a wider trend in travel toward slow, immersive, nature-connected luxury? Reflections believes that life’s better outside and that we are all better people when we are in nature, connecting with nature and our loved ones.
As our world gets more frenetic, the trend of slow travel will only deepen and Wilderluxe is in a unique position for that reason –surrounded by a stunning lake teeming with wildlife and located in Big Sky Country.
For someone considering a stay at Wilderluxe Lake Keepit, what’s one thing you’d want them to know before they arrive? We’re fairly remote so if you plan on cooking yourself make sure you have supplies so you can spend more time relaxing and less time running to town for food. Be prepared for the silence here, the only thing will be the birds singing each morning and the afternoon bounding of the kangaroos.
How can people book, and what’s the best time of year to visit? To book a stay, go to www.wilderluxe.com.au. Like the Australian bush, each season brings a unique experience to Wilderluxe guests. Our summers are vibrant and perfect for water sports with impressive lightning shows in the evenings. It’s also perfect weather to watch all the birds playing in the thermals that build over the lake. And it’s excellent weather for heading up in a glider to catch those thermals yourself (note: the Lake Keepit Gliding Club is located adjacent to Wilderluxe). Autumn brings crisp evenings and the Milky Way starts to take shape as the sun sets earlier and earlier each night. Winter is the perfect stargazing season where you
can see a billion stars and planets in the clear night sky with the only light coming from the crackling fire pit. Snuggling into your tent or running a steaming hot bath is quite the experience when the temperature drops. Spring time brings a backdrop of wildflowers and bright yellow paddocks full of canola in the distance. As the days warm up it’s time to ditch the layers and enjoy the lake again.
In one sentence, what’s the essence of a Wilderluxe experience? A unique luxury escape that truly immerses you in nature, from the stars to the lake and everything in between.
LEANNE PRUSSING
ARTIST of the MONTH
With a career spanning more than 35 years, Leanne Prussing has carved a unique path as an artist whose work bridges mythology, performance, and environmental themes. FROM INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCIES IN ITALY AND GREECE TO HER CIRCUS SERIES’ RECENT INSTALLATION AT CIRQUE DU
SOLEIL’S GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS,
Leanne continues to create art that is both personal and political, rooted in transformation, activism, and legacy.
Hand storytelling.
i Leanne. Can you share a bit about your background and art journey so far?
Drawing on over 35 years as a full-time artist, my practice bridges mythology, performance, and environmental themes. My work spans large-scale canvases, limited-edition prints, wearable art, and functional art - each piece guided by my belief in art as transformation
I’ve been recognised in some of the nation’s most prestigious awards, including as a Sulman Prize finalist (2011) at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
My career has included international residencies, notably in Assisi, Italy, where I developed my acclaimed Goddess Series, as well as large-scale murals on Ios, Greece. In 2025, I achieved a milestone with the permanent installation of my Circus Series at Cirque du Soleil’s global headquarters in Montreal, Canada; a continuation of my European works created while touring with my son Nelson, who stars in Luzia.
After 56 exhibitions and competitions, years of travel abroad, and now reaching the age of 60, it feels like a rite of passage to create works that truly plant seeds in the collective consciousness.
Artists are often the first to hear the call of change, of revolution, and to reflect it back through creative expression. My focus now is on work that speaks of transformation, activism, and legacy. My art is both personal and political; a call for beauty, resilience, and change in a fragile world.
The Circus Series has had an extraordinary journey, travelling with Cirque du Soleil and now residing in their Montreal headquarters. How did this series begin, and what has the experience of sharing it globally been like for you?
The Circus Series was born out of love for my son and his team of exceptional circus artists in Luzia. I was invited into his world in Alicante in 2023 and toured with them throughout Europe. Returning to Australia, I was inspired to paint the works on a larger scale. Alan and Denise from Masterpiece Framing and Gallery generously sponsor my studio space above the gallery, giving me the opportunity to expand the series.
MY ART IS BOTH PERSONAL AND POLITICAL; A CALL FOR BEAUTY, RESILIENCE AND CHANGE IN A FRAGILE WORLD.
Your focus has shifted from competitions and group exhibitions toward creating powerful series of work. What prompted this change in direction at this stage of your career?
Since then, the works have travelled the world alongside Nelson and Luzia. They’ve been exhibited in Vienna’s VIP lounge, shown privately backstage for Cirque VIPs in New York, and in July this year, were acquired as a permanent part of Cirque du Soleil’s art collection at their Montreal headquarters.

Your Save the Sea Series directly supports Greenpeace and ocean protection. How did you come to this decision, and how important is it to you that your art contributes tangibly to environmental activism?
I’ve spent much of my life by the ocean, and
SPENT MUCH OF MY LIFE BY THE OCEAN, AND FOR ALMOST THREE YEARS I LIVED ON A YACHT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. WITH THIS SERIES, I IMAGINE A CLEAN, THRIVING, PLASTICFREE OCEAN.
for almost three years I lived on a yacht in the Mediterranean. With this series, I imagine a clean, thriving, plastic-free ocean. It’s a vision that also calls out our consumerism and the waste that ends up in our waters.
When people view these works, what do you hope they take away about our
relationship with the ocean?
We already have the technology and science to restore our oceans, all that’s needed is a shift in collective consciousness.
A simple starting point: stop buying plastic water bottles. I’ve created reusable Goddess bottles as part of my functional art series to help people make that choice.
The Save the Sea Series channels my deep concern for our oceans. Proceeds from the work support Greenpeace, funding campaigns that prevent fossil fuel expansion and advocate for marine parks, protecting our most vital ecosystems.
What inspired the Goddess Series and your decision to create wearable art with
it?
The Goddess Series was born from my divorce and came to life during an artist residency in Assisi, Italy in June 2023. In the stillness of St. Francis Cathedral, I painted The Silencing of Mary Magdalene, the first in the series. I gave her no mouth, a stark embodiment of my own yet unhealed journey through patriarchy. In that moment, I recognised both the wound and the calling. The work was later exhibited at Art Gallery Le Logge, Piazza del Comune, Assisi. The series is a rallying cry for women to claim their voices, take up space, and lead. It’s an invitation to claim a seat at the global table of decision-making - to end war, foster peace,
protect the earth, and restore balance with our brothers.
Through art, wearable art, and functional art as ritual, wearing the Goddess allows us to walk as living archetypes, fierce, wise, and unapologetic. This is more than adornment; it is armor, ritual, and revolution.
MY PRACTICE IS ROOTED IN THE BELIEF THAT ART MUST BE MORE THAN AESTHETIC, IT MUST SERVE AS A LEGACY OF CHANGE.
You’ve said your art is about legacy. What kind of legacy do you hope to leave for future generations?
My practice is rooted in the belief that art must be more than aesthetic, it must serve as a legacy of change. Recently, I’ve joined marches for Palestine and donated works to the Palestinian freedom movement, continuing my commitment to justice, peace, and liberation. Through each series, I hope my art inspires
courage, sparks dialogue and empowers collective action. My vision is to leave behind a body of work that not only tells my story but also carries forward a message of hope and transformation for generations to come. What's next for you? Are there new themes or projects beginning to take shape in your mind?
Always.
Where can we find out more, view your works, or get in touch?
I’d love to invite all art lovers to my Prussing Art Launch on Saturday 18 October, 2pm at Masterpiece Framing and Gallery, 91 Hastings River Drive, Port Macquarie. I’ll be taking over the gallery until the end of January.

Forster Tuncurry Lakeside Festival 2025 is set to be huge this October. Three events over three days with a great weekend of food, music and laughs. Focus caught up with renowned musician and starring artist Jake Davey to hear all about his involvement with the exciting event.
Hi Jake, thank you so much for your time. This year’s festival is set to be bigger and better with so much on offer over the jampacked three day event. Can you tell us a little about what we can expect to see from your talented self?
Hey, my pleasure! Honestly, a music festival by the ocean…it doesn’t get much better than that. It’s going to be a massive day and we’re so thrilled to be part of it. I was the first ever artist to take the stage at Lakeside back in 2013, so this all feels full circle! The band and I hit the stage right on sunset, which makes for such a special vibe. We’ve put together a set list that’s full of country pop energy, singalongs, and a few surprises along the way - we can’t wait for this one.
The boutique music festival is designed to appeal to all ages with live music across two stages, stand-up comedy at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club and food and markets set against the stunning backdrop of

TO THIS YEAR’S LINE-UP
Wallis Lake. What are you most looking forward to?
The best part for me is seeing the whole community come together and soak it all in. Between the live music, the food, the markets and the comedy…Lakeside really nails it. It’s such a unique vibe and that variety makes it hard to pick just one highlight!
Part of your involvement in the festival this year will see a new initiative in-store entitled Launchpad and I understand Jake Davey Studios is excited to partner with the event to offer an incredible opportunity to an emerging artist. Can you share some details about this?
For sure. Jake Davey Studios is thrilled to be partnering with Lakeside Festival to launch this brand-new initiative “Lakeside Launchpad”. We’re offering a $10,000 prize package to an emerging artist that takes out the competition, a full industry-level production experience designed to kickstart their career. From songwriting and recording through to music video production, my team and I will be working hands-on with the winner to help bring their original music and vision to life. It’s all about giving someone with talent and drive the chance to take that next big step. Away from festival preparations Jake,
what else are you currently working on professionally?
I’ve just released a brand-new single, “Got It All,” after taking a short break to really dive into writing (with a visit to Nashville) and preparing for this next chapter of music. It dropped on September 5 and I’m so grateful for the response so far. It’s already in high rotation on Nova’s Fresh Country and Triple M Country, which are two of Australia’s most iconic stations, and streaming extremely well across Spotify and Apple Music. This track is the first of many releases coming over the next 12 months. The new songs are all inspired by some huge life moments for me, becoming a dad, getting married, building a home, and just that whole journey of growing up. It feels like the most authentic music I’ve ever created, and I can’t wait to share it.
For people interested in finding out a little more about you or to connect with your music, how can they best reach out?
Your best bet is to hit my socials @ jakedaveymusic or check out my website for more details www.jakedaveymusic.com including new music, tour dates and merch! Thanks for your support and we’ll see you all at Lakeside Festival.
Thanks Jake. Interview: Sarah Baker.
PAULA STONE PMSLSC PRESIDENT
NSW CLUB YEAR 2025 of the
PORT MACQUARIE
Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club has been crowned Surf Life Saving NSW Club of the Year for 2025, A MILESTONE THAT RECOGNISES THE DEDICATION AND INNOVATION OF ITS MEMBERS ACROSS ALL AREAS OF CLUB LIFE. President Paula Stone reflects on the achievement, the culture behind the success, and the future vision driving this vibrant community club.
Congratulations on being named Surf Life Saving NSW Club of the Year for 2025! How did it feel to hear Port Macquarie SLSC announced as the winner?
As President, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride on behalf of our entire club. This award is recognition of the hard work, commitment, and innovation shown by our members across all areas, from lifesaving services and training, through to youth engagement, governance, and community connection. To have Port Macquarie SLSC recognised as NSW Club of the Year confirms that the direction we’ve taken as a club is making a real impact, and it’s a credit to every volunteer who has contributed to our success.
The judges described your season as a “deeply considered journey.” What do you think that says about the culture of your club?
The 2024/25 season was a transformational year for Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club, marking exceptional growth, innovation, and engagement across all areas of club life. This award reflects not just a single season, but the result of four years of dedicated effort.
Post-COVID, volunteer numbers were declining across the board nationally, and like many organisations, we felt the impact. People were re-evaluating how they spent their free time, and our previous fixed patrolling model was no longer sustainable. We needed to respect volunteers’ time and offer flexibility - because without volunteers, there is no surf club.
To make volunteering easier for our members, empower them to choose when and how they contribute, and remind everyone that in surf life saving, there is a role for everyone.
fit their lives, which has removed barriers and encouraged more people to stay involved. We’ve also invested heavily in youth programs, training opportunities, and clear pathways for people to grow and contribute. That combination has given the club new energy and made it a place where people want to be.
Our mission became clear: to make volunteering easier for our members, empower them to choose when and how they contribute, and remind everyone that in surf life saving, there is a role for everyone.
This year saw a 55% increase in active membership, that’s an incredible achievement. What do you think has driven so many new people to join?
The growth has come from creating a club environment that is flexible, welcoming, and member-centred. Our introduction of the Flexible Patrol System has been a major factor; it allows members to choose patrol times that
You were recognised for the number of training qualifications awarded, how important is training and education to the way your club operates?
Training and education are central to our success. They ensure our patrols are capable and confident, but they also develop leadership, resilience, and teamwork across all ages. This season we awarded more than 270 qualifications, ranging from Bronze Medallions to advanced rescue and instructor accreditations. These outcomes not only enhance safety on our beach but also give our members valuable skills they carry into other areas of life.

NSW CLUB YEAR 2025 of the
You spoke of your Flexible Patrol System. Can you explain how these work and why they’ve been so successful?
Traditionally, members were assigned to fixed patrol groups, which could be challenging for those balancing work, study, or family
Port Macquarie SLSC is more than just a lifesaving service, it’s a hub for connection, learning and community spirit.
commitments. After attending the 2024 NSW SLS Conference last year, our committee was inspired by a presentation from Bermagui SLSC about the flexible patrol system they had introduced, and the positive impact it had
on member retention and engagement.
Seeing their success, we decided to trial a similar approach at Port Macquarie SLSC.
We moved to a volunteer-first model, allowing members to select their own patrol times and frequency. While a simple change, it signalled trust in our members and gave them a sense of ownership over their service. The results have been significant: higher patrol attendance, improved coverage,
and greater member satisfaction. This initiative has been an important step forward in creating a sustainable, memberfocused club.
We play a vital role in promoting ocean safety and awareness, but just as importantly we provide a place where people can belong, contribute and grow.
Beyond the numbers, the award recognises your focus on inclusion and member support. How has building a culture of belonging and support strengthened the club overall?
It has transformed the way people experience the club. When members feel supported and
valued, they engage more fully - not just on patrol, but in training, surf sports, and social activities. We’ve seen our youth step into leadership roles, our cadets contributing in areas such as Nippers and communications, and our senior members mentoring and guiding others. That culture of belonging has created a positive energy that keeps people coming back and ensures the club continues to grow stronger.
What role do you think the club plays in the wider Port Macquarie community, beyond surf lifesaving?
Port Macquarie SLSC is more than just a lifesaving service, it’s a hub for connection, learning, and community spirit. We play
a vital role in promoting ocean safety and awareness, but just as importantly, we provide a place where people can belong, contribute, and grow. For our youth, the club is a platform to develop leadership skills, resilience, and teamwork; qualities they carry into future employment, education, and life beyond the beach.
Through events, training, and outreach, we connect with schools, community groups, and families, creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with surf lifesaving. In many ways, the club acts as a bridge between the beach and the broader community, fostering pride, wellbeing, and a shared sense of responsibility.
Winning Club of the Year is a huge milestone. What are your hopes for the future in terms of growth, innovation, and community engagement?
Our focus now is on building momentum; continuing to innovate and strengthening our culture of inclusion and connection. Port Macquarie SLSC is a place where people of all generations come together, learning from one another respectfully and sharing knowledge across age groups. Because of this culture, I’m confident we will continue to attract new members, not only those with a surf lifesaving background, but also people moving to the coast who want to improve their skills, give back, and meet like-minded individuals.
We’ll refine and expand our Flexible Patrol System, further develop youth leadership pathways, and invest in training that builds multi-skilled, adaptable members. At the same time, we’re committed to deepening our community partnerships, particularly through ocean safety programs for young people and culturally diverse groups. Ultimately, our vision is to remain a strong, sustainable, and welcoming club - one that not only delivers outstanding lifesaving services but also fosters pride and connection across the Port Macquarie community. Thanks Paula.

The days are getting longer and the sun is finally peeking through the rain clouds, promising us that after what feels like a long winter, it’s nearly ready to help us enjoy the summer days we are all craving.
In the fashion world our spring deliveries are in full swing, with colours and patterns tempting us to pack away the woollies and get ready for a fun season ahead.
So with that in mind this month I thought I would share with you some of my foundational style tips and the power that comes along with them. As always with fashion, there is something for everyone but the number one styling tip, (in my mind), is to always ensure there is “intention” behind your look or outfit. Now when I say intention, what does that mean to you? Let’s think about some of the different style categories that we commonly see references to: casual, smart casual, relaxed, boho, corporate, feminine, minimalist, tonal, colour blocking, formal, the list really could go on. When reading that list, no doubt you started to visualise some concepts relating to each category.
The style interpretations are endless when we look at each of these categories, and this is where it can become overwhelming because even the simplest formula of “jeans with a tee and sneaker” can look very intentional or very UN-intentional depending on the colours, style, shape and even size of each of these individual items when put together. Are you intentionally trying to create a look that says, “I don’t have a mirror at home” or was it simply that you didn’t
consider a couple of key styling concepts before completing the look and walking out the door?
For most of us, it’s a matter of experimentation until we settle on a formula that we understand and feel comfortable in. But as with most things in life, there are some shortcuts available too. You can go down the Instagram or TikTok rabbit holes learning from stylists sharing their knowledge and literally showing you why one outfit can look one way when worn without intention, and conversely how different the same items can look when styled intentionally. But this can become overwhelming too, because often the “muse” isn’t your exact body shape, height, weight, proportions or even colouring. Some of us learn by watching, some of us learn by doing.
There’s a lot to be said for a twist, a tuck, a fold or a cinch and it’s these little personalisations that can really elevate a look and turn what could look quite unintentional without them, into something quite intentional, even polished when executed well.
With over 13 years in the fashion industry, I’ve witnessed countless “ah-ha” moments when women start to make an item or an outfit “theirs”. Consider this. Just because something is slightly too long or has a little extra fabric under the arms but is otherwise the perfect colour, shape and design for you, shouldn’t have
to mean it is a straight up “No”. I get it, spending money on something that isn’t 100% perfect straight off the hanger can feel diffult at first, but I have seen time and time again the value of personalising a garment taking it from “good” to “great” with a relatively small investment which results in a garment that in the end looks made to measure. It’s a step that so many people won’t even consider, but in my mind tailoring is one of the most underrated styling hacks because it makes the garment fit YOU.
What’s better? An ill-fitting item you loved the look of on the hanger, however every time you put it on it’s just not quite right (but it was on sale so you bought it anyway) or your favourite, perfectly fitting garment that makes you light up and feel amazing each and every time you wear it? Oh, and the compliments, don’t forget the compliments that come when you’ve been intentional in personalising and styling your outfit…
So as we welcome the season ahead, let’s remember the power of being intentional and considered when putting our outfits together, and if there’s something in your wardrobe that’s asking to be tailored so you wear it more often and love it even more, invest in yourself and the garment and get it done!
You’ll be happy you did, I promise you!

ELITE NETBALL LEAGUE
Launching this month in Port Macquarie, the Elite Netball League is set to bring a new level of competition to the North Coast, giving local athletes a pathway that rivals NSW’s Premier League. We caught up with founder Molly Styles to hear how the idea came to life and what it means for the future of regional netball.
Hi Molly. Congratulations on launching the Elite Netball League in Port Macquarie! Can you tell us how the idea first came about?
It’s been exciting watching it come to life. The idea had been floating around for a while, but really took shape this year after I spoke with my rep coach, Amy Quirk, about the need for a consistent competition that mirrors the standard of NSW Premier League. Our local Saturday comp isn’t at that level, and rep carnivals are too few and far between to keep players challenged. After our Hastings Opens Rep team finished Runners Up at State Championships this year, we earned a promotion to the Championship Division next year. In the Champs Division, we come up against metro powerhouses like Manly, Penrith
and Liverpool, so it felt like the right time to put pen to paper and make it happen.
The league is designed for the most elite players on the North Coast. Why was it important to create this level of competition locally, rather than relying on players travelling to larger cities?
It’s no secret regional netballers have fewer opportunities and resources than metro girls, even though the talent is just as strong. Personally, I didn’t even know about NSW Premier League until I was 21, and by then it’s tough to crack if you’re not already in a pathway. This league creates that pathway here, giving talented North Coast players elite competition, resources and opportunity. If they want to take their netball to the next level, they’ll be well equipped. The talent has always been here, we just needed a stage.
Netball NSW’s Premier League in Sydney inspired you, what elements of that competition are you hoping to replicate or adapt for Port Macquarie?
The consistency and intensity of the competition. Every week you know you’re going up against quality opposition. That’s the standard we want to replicate here. But it’s not just about the games, it’s the full program: access to elite coaching, structured strength and conditioning, nutrition, and athlete wellbeing. We also want to build the same sense of professionalism and community you feel in Sydney, but adapted to a regional setting where players don’t have to sacrifice hours of travel just to access those opportunities. The matches will be played indoors on Friday nights at the PCYC. What kind of atmosphere are you hoping to create for players and spectators?
better pathways, and the chance to test yourself against the region’s best without leaving the North Coast.
Netball is such a community-driven sport, what role do you see this league playing in inspiring younger players and raising the overall standard of netball in the region?
For younger players, seeing a high-level competition in their own backyard makes the dream feel closer and more achievable. It gives them a real goal to aspire to, rather than reaching 18 and feeling stuck or thinking the only option is moving to a city to keep developing. Hopefully they will also develop a connection to the inaugural four teams, the Vipers, Wolves, Pumas and Falcons, and aspire to pull on one of those dresses one day. For the region as a whole, it lifts expectations, as players train harder, coaches aim higher, and the overall standard of netball rises across every age group.
We want players to feel like they’re stepping onto a big stage every week, and for spectators to be right there in the action and close enough to feel the intensity.
We’re aiming to create a really electric, highenergy atmosphere. The PCYC is an amazing new venue, and having matches indoors with a grandstand gives it that professional feel. We want players to feel like they’re stepping onto a big stage every week, and for spectators to be right there in the action and close enough to feel the intensity. With four teams to kick off the inaugural season, how did you go about forming them, and what can you tell us about the calibre of athletes involved?
We opened Expressions of Interest in August, spreading the word from Great Lakes in the south to as far north as Woolgoolga. Players
submitted applications and then attended trials, where selectors chose the most talented athletes to form the four teams. The calibre is outstanding, athletes range from 16 to 35+, and we’ve got players with NSW Premier League and Nationals experience. It really highlights the depth of talent that’s always existed here on the North Coast.
How does the Elite Netball League differ from traditional Saturday netball, and what new challenges or opportunities does it provide for players?
The biggest difference is the standard and intensity. While our Saturday comp is a good standard, it just doesn’t replicate the pace or pressure of elite competition. The ENL is about consistencyplayers face tough opposition every week, not just at the occasional rep carnival. That brings new challenges, like adapting to faster and more physical games, stricter coaching and higher fitness demands. But the opportunities are huge: access to strength and conditioning,
Looking ahead, how do you see the Elite Netball League evolving?
We have big plans! Once the demand is there, we’d love to expand and add more teams, but not too early at the risk of diluting the calibre of athletes. A longer-term goal is to pay our players and keep building the professionalism of women’s sport on the North Coast. We also want to grow junior pathways and create an event that becomes a true Friday night fixture for the community. Another exciting prospect is becoming affiliated with NSW Premier League. We’ve seen Queensland’s Premier League expand and invest in a Northern Conference to address the same issue, and we believe a model like that could thrive here too.
Finally, for players, fans, and supporters who want to get involved, what’s the best way to follow the league or be part of its journey?
Follow us on socials! You can find us on Facebook (Elite Netball League) and Instagram (@elite_netballleague). For fans and families, we’d love to see you courtside on Friday nights at PCYC cheering on the teams, and for local businesses, there are always opportunities to come on board as sponsors and be part of building something special for the region. Thanks Molly.

THE CHYC COLLECTIVE (FORMERLY THE CURVE COLLECTIVE) HAS MOVED AND SO HAS YOUR EXCUSE TO “JUST POP IN”
Well, ladies of Port Macquarie, we’ve packed up our racks, kissed our old boutique goodbye and swanned into a brand new, bigger, shinier boutique right in the hustle and bustle of town. Murray Street is buzzing, with so many gorgeous boutiques, beauty, hair, coffee and flowers, so grab a coffee, take a stroll and let’s make boutique shopping feel like the event it deserves to be.
And what exactly will you find inside?
Oh, just a little something for everyone.
Think: Zulu & Zephyr, Viktoria & Woods, AJE, Camilla & Marc, Billini Shoes incoming soon, Levi’s, Roame, Sabbi, SNDYS the Label, MOS the Label, Runway the Label, Never Fully Dressed, a jewellery line that won’t tarnish no matter how many Aperols you sip in the sun, plus many more brands incoming over the next few seasons.
We’re talking summer ready wardrobes but in limited sizes only (translation: if you snooze, you lose). Plus, we’ve got our curve queens covered with City Chic, The Curve Project, Bohemian Traders and The Lullaby Club bringing all their latest must haves.
Now, About That Designer Dress Hire…
Our dress hire is going gangbusters (yes, that’s the technical term). Honestly, we can barely keep up and we love it. But here’s the deal: Dress Hire is still at our previous shop at Bellbowrie by appointment only. Why? Because we like to give each woman our full attention (and because trying on designer dresses deserves more than a rushed five minutes between errands).
• Book online at thechyccollective.com
Or, if you’re feeling rebellious, slide into our DMs. But really, book online. It keeps things smooth, and appointments are limited.
Here’s How It Works:
• You book a try on.
• We pull out options from sizes 4 to 24 (because every body deserves a killer outfit).
• You fall in love with something fabulous, from Acler, Atoir, Camilla, L’idee, AJE, Rebecca Vallance, Eliya The Label, Nookie, City Chic Luxe, Mossman, Rachel Gilbert, Zimmerman, Alemais, Meshki and more.
• You collect your dress Friday, wear it to your event, and drop it back Monday.
• We handle the cleaning (no, seriously, don’t
even think about Febreezing it or putting it in the washing machine).
It’s basically renting a designer label for a fraction of the price without having to sacrifice wardrobe space or commit to a second mortgage for “the dress”
Events Covered:
Formals, weddings, race days, business awards, black tie galas, mother of the bride moments, cocktail nights and even that one random “dress to impress” party you forgot you RSVP’d to. Short, long, backless, strapless, long sleeve, one sleeve basically, if you can imagine it, we’ve got it.
One More Tease…
By the time this article hits the shelves we may have announced a brand new designer dress hire showroom and maybe even another little business baby we’re working on. If not, sit tight. Let’s just say Port Macquarie fashion is about to get the serious glow up it deserves. So, there you have it. Murray Street is your boutique shopping runway. Come for a stroll, see all the gorgeous businesses Murray St has to offer and let’s keep Port Macquarie fabulous, one coffee and one killer outfit at a time. Hayley x focus contributor.

NSW Ambulance Intensive Care Paramedic
Benjamin Monaghan has spent his career responding to emergencies with calmness, skill, and compassion; qualities that first inspired him as a teenager when he witnessed paramedics at work on a local beach. From lifesaving rescues to mentoring the next generation, he’s proud to serve the Port Macquarie community he calls home.
Let’s start at the beginning, what inspired you to become a paramedic?
I’ve been lucky to grow up in a big family full of great role models, but one moment really stands out. When I was still at school, I had to call an ambulance for someone who’d been injured at the beach. The way the paramedics arrived with such calm body language, gentle humour, and genuine care completely changed the atmosphere. Their presence was contagious, you could feel the tension lift.
Growing up in the Wauchope–Bonny Hills Surf Club also meant I was constantly exposed to first aid and rescue training. Looking back, those experiences quietly built the foundation for my career. Even now, after years on the job, it’s still an eye-opening experience. I’m constantly learning, looking for ways to improve, and striving to have that same positive impact that inspired me in the first place.
You’re often working in high-pressure, unpredictable situations. How do you mentally prepare for the challenges you face on the job?
Every situation is different, but preparation starts before we even arrive. My partner and I will talk through what we know, draw on past experiences, and come up with a few possible plans - Plan A, Plan B, and sometimes Plan C. It’s a way to get our heads in the game, anticipate what might go wrong, and decide how we’d respond.
We also rely heavily on each other. That trust means we can adapt quickly if things don’t go to plan. And no matter how experienced you are, it’s important to debrief after a tough job, sharing what went well and what could be better next time.
What does a “typical” day look like for you, if there is such a thing?
In my role as an Intensive Care Paramedic on the road, “routine” isn’t really part of the job. Each shift starts partnered with a colleague, knowing only that we’ll begin and end in Port Macquarie, the hours in between can take us anywhere.
We work four 12-hour shifts in a row; two days, two nights, responding to everything
from life-threatening emergencies to interhospital transfers by road, airplane, or helicopter. One morning might start with a critical case, and by the afternoon we’re helping transfer a patient to specialist care hundreds of kilometres away.
Our region is also a great training ground for new paramedics. We’re often involved in education sessions, simulations, and mentoring, which keeps us all on our toes. If we do get a rare quiet moment, you might find us grabbing a coffee and overlooking the headland at Town Beach… purely for “safety checks,” of course!
Your job involves a lot of teamwork. How important is that sense of trust and connection with your colleagues?
It’s vital. We’ve got an outstanding team across the Mid North Coast, from South West Rocks to Laurieton, and the trust between us is something I value every day.
Behind the scenes, there are so many moving parts that keep things running smoothly: our management team, fleet staff, educators, and many more. We’ve built strong relationships with these people and rely on them more than most would realise.
That teamwork extends well beyond NSW Ambulance. We work side-by-side with hospital staff, especially in the emergency departments, and with other emergency services, all of whom play essential roles in delivering the best care for our community.
In such a high-stress profession, how do you take care of your own mental health and wellbeing?
Finding balance is key. If I can keep on top of my sleep, nutrition, fitness, and time with family and friends, I’m far better equipped to handle the demands of the job.
I try to be as present as possible when I’m at home with my wife, kids, and our dog, whether that’s at the beach, at the park, or just around the house. I also enjoy taking on challenges away from work, like surfing and running, which give me a healthy outlet and keep me grounded.
Is there a particular skill or mindset that you think makes someone well-suited to being a paramedic?
A positive mindset paired with kindness and resilience goes a long way but it’s not just about staying upbeat. As paramedics, we’re often involved in big life decisions, so it’s vital to communicate clearly with everyone involved. The best outcomes come when patients, families, and all health professionals on scene can work together to make the right decision for the person who needs help.
How has working in this role shaped your view of the local community?
It’s made me appreciate the incredible generosity and spirit of this region. Even though our area is growing quickly, it still has that “small town” feel where people look out for each other.
Time and again, I’ve seen neighbours, friends, and even complete strangers go out of their way to help, offering lifts, cooking meals, or checking on loved ones before we even arrive. That sense of community care is something you can’t manufacture, and it’s part of what makes this place so special.
If you could give the public one piece of advice that might help them in an emergency situation before paramedics arrive, what would it be?
If you’ve called an ambulance, try to stay calm and follow the instructions from the call taker. They’re highly trained and can guide you through what to do before we arrive, whether it’s starting CPR, stopping bleeding, or giving us clear directions so we can get there quickly. As an extra tip, having some basic first aid
training can make a huge difference. It builds confidence and helps make the situation less confronting when someone you care about needs help.
Being a paramedic is more than a career, it’s a service to the community. What does being a “local hero” mean to you personally?
For me, it’s about trying to bring the same calmness and even a smile to people that those paramedics brought to me all those years ago. If I can leave a situation just a little better than I found it, that’s a win.
I also see myself as just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. There are so many “local heroes” here; emergency services, healthcare workers, volunteers, teachers, small business owners, and yes; the coffee shops that keep us all going. None of us could do our jobs without each other.
Finally, what do you love most about calling the Port Macquarie region home?
Where do I start? The beaches, parks, sporting facilities, cafes, and restaurants are all incredible. But what really matters is the sense of community and belonging.
My study and career have taken me to different places, including a remote posting in Collarenebri, which was an amazing experience. But even while I was there, my goal was always to return here, to work, raise our family, and be part of this community. We feel very lucky to call it home.
Thanks Benjamin.

MEET THE HEART BEHIND DOCKSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR
What started as a seafood venue has since evolved into a vibrant Modern Italian eatery, known for its house-made dishes, warm atmosphere, and genuine hospitality. We sat down with Amrik to learn more about the story behind Dockside, the inspiration behind the menu, and what makes this local favourite truly stand out.
Please introduce yourself and your team to our readers.
I’m Amrik Singh, owner of Dockside Restaurant & Bar. I’ve worked in hospitality for over 20 years, across a variety of cuisines and with
Nestled on the edge of the marina with sweeping waterfront views, Dockside Restaurant & Bar is more than just a place to dine it’s a celebration of food, family, and community. At the helm is Amrik Singh, a hospitality veteran with over 20 years of experience and a deep-rooted passion for Italian cuisine.
extensive experience in Italian dining. That journey shaped Dockside into what it is today. Our team of chefs, bartenders, and frontof-house staff all share the same passion , creating food with care and offering genuine hospitality to every guest.
What inspired you to open Dockside? Was there a defining moment or idea that sparked it?
Dockside originally opened as a seafood restaurant, but we quickly realised our community was looking for something different. With my background in Italian cuisine, it felt natural to evolve into Modern Italian dining , a style that combines authentic flavours, housemade dishes, and warm hospitality. That’s when Dockside truly found its identity.
How would you describe Dockside in three words?
Authentic. Welcoming. Memorable. What sets Dockside apart from other restaurants in the area?
It’s our mix of location, food, and atmosphere.
We’re right on the marina with both outdoor seating and an upstairs balcony, offering the best views in town. Almost everything is house-made, from our focaccia and ricotta gnocchi to arancini and desserts like tiramisu, chocolate brownie etc. We’re also proud to offer something unique in town, craft tap beers like Peroni and Asahi, plus an extensive range of wines, spirits, and cocktails. Combined with a private function room for birthdays, family gatherings, or even small weddings, Dockside has something for every occasion.
How would you describe the style of cuisine at Dockside?
Modern Italian. Our menu is built on classics like lasagne, carbonara, pizza, and risotto, alongside fresh seafood and vibrant salads. It’s food that is designed for sharing and celebrating, while still being accessible for everyday dining.
Can you tell us about a signature dish that represents what Dockside is all about?
Our Ricotta Gnocchi with Pumpkin and Spinach really captures the spirit of Dockside. Soft, delicate gnocchi tossed with burnt butter,
pine nuts, and seasonal vegetables, it’s rustic, full of flavour, and made with care.
How often do you change the menu, and what inspires new dishes?
in different restaurants and across a wide range of cuisines, but Italian food has always stood out to me. It’s about family, sharing, and togetherness, values that perfectly match Dockside’s philosophy. Is there a dish from your childhood or culinary journey that inspired anything on your current menu?
We want every guest to feel like they’ve had a taste of Italy on the water, relaxed, looked a er and with a meal they’ll remember.
We update the menu seasonally, guided by fresh produce, Italian tradition, and customer feedback. We’re grateful for our regulars, who keep coming back and inspire us to keep raising the bar.
What’s your background as a chef, and how has that influenced what you do at Dockside?
I’ve spent two decades in hospitality, working
Bread was always at the centre of family meals when I was growing up, and that inspired our freshly baked focaccia. It’s simple, warm, and brings people together, exactly what we want our food to do.
What’s your personal favourite dish to cook at Dockside – and your favourite to eat?
I love cooking our arancini, they’re golden, cheesy, and a customer favourite. To eat, I’d choose our tiramisu every time, a true Italian classic and the perfect finish to any meal. What kind of experience do you want
guests to have when they dine at Dockside?
We want every guest to feel like they’ve had a taste of Italy on the water, relaxed, looked after, and with a meal they’ll remember. Dockside should feel just as welcoming for a casual pizza night as it does for a special family gathering or celebration.
Tell us about the space – what can guests expect in terms of atmosphere and views?
Dockside overlooks the marina and offers the best waterfront setting in town. Guests can enjoy casual dining outdoors by the water, an upstairs balcony with sweeping views, or our private function room for events. It’s a versatile space, perfect for everything from date nights to birthdays and even small weddings.
How can readers book a table at Dockside?
Bookings can be made through our website or by calling us directly. With Christmas on the way, we’re now taking bookings for Christmas parties and functions. Our private function room is ideal for festive gatherings, and we encourage readers to book early to celebrate the season with us.
Thanks guys.
TEAM
IT’S
Excitement has prevailed and emotions have been running at an all time high for us all. Whilst we’ve been so busy catching up with so many of you, we’ve also been feeling all the feels when it comes to reflecting on the past 20 years and in doing so knowing that the absolute most fundamental part of what we do here is the ‘Team’ that brings it each and every day. So let this month’s column be a massive shoutout to those that make it happen.
We have been incredibly fortunate as a small business within the restaurant industry to have had, over the course of the past 20 years, the most incredible people gracing us with their presences.
For a regional town on the Mid North Coast, we’ve surely had way more than our fair share of talent, passion, tenacity and loyalty passing through our doors.
Going back through our employees of the past 20 years is like a Hall of Fame, with our people so vivid in our memory because of who they were as humans and how they each
helped shape our business and contribute to what it is today.
Without them, we wouldn’t be here.
It’s just an honour to have met them, let alone having them as part of our team.
I think it’s the X factor that sets one hospitality establishment apart from another – that warm feeling you get as a customer when you know you’re in the presence of people who genuinely care about what they do.
That is truly what ‘hospitality’ is, and we are so very, very fortunate to have that here in bucketloads. In every aspect of the dining experience we offer – from that very first greeting at the front door, to the care and attention that has gone into the plate in front of you, to our team taking the time to get to know our guests, and just genuinely enjoying

working with people.
It's the difference between simply getting the job done and getting it done with flair by just doing that little bit more to truly elevate the experience for our diners.
For a regional town on the Mid North Coast, we’ve surely had way more than our fair share of talent, passion, tenacity and loyalty passing through our doors.
Without it we would just be ordinary but because of it we can achieve extraordinary. It’s that extra something, that X factor that is everything. So here’s to all the absolute legends from the Mullet past and the ones that are on the Team right now – you know who you are.
For those of us in business, the saying hits home - it’s not about what you do, it’s who you have on your team and we are so very lucky to have you all here with us.
FROM THE STUNNED MULLET with LOU PERRI
From smooth cold brews to vibrant Matcha and our new favourite, Ube, there’s something in the mix for every palate. We sat down with Johnny and Beau from Bandwagon to chat about what inspired the idea, what customers can expect, and where this exciting new venture might be headed.
Bandwagon
Tell us about the new line of canned beverages, what inspired the idea?
We are so excited to be offering our customers our very own, house-made, fresh canned beverages. Of course we have always had a great range of beverages on our menu, but we were inspired to make it easier and more convenient with grab and go options ready and waiting. We all know what it feels like to be in a rush to get to work, meet with friends for a walk or get on the road, and now you don’t have to wait , there’s drinks ready to go!
How would you describe the vibe and
flavour profile of the new range?
Our coffee is smooth and delicious as always, but we have a couple of new emerging favourites, Matcha and Ube.
The vibe and flavour profiles are fun, exciting and different. Our coffee is smooth and delicious as always, but we have a couple of new emerging favourites, Matcha and Ube. Not only super tasty, but known for having health benefits.
Matcha is fine stone-ground powder made from whole tea leaves, you actually consume the entire matcha leaf rather than having a steeped tea, that’s why it’s so vibrant. It has a delicate sweetness, but also contains an earthy umami flavour that is really unique.
Matcha has a super high concentration of antioxidants and is known for supporting brain function among other things!
Ube is a starchy root vegetable native to the Philippines. It is high in fibre and vitamin C, and gives your gut health a boost. It has a sweet, nutty, vanilla flavour and smooth and creamy consistency.
We will be adding new flavours and evolving over time so we are always offering new product lines for our customers to try. Are these beverages something you’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while, or was it a recent spark of creativity?
It’s been in the works for a couple of months now. We love providing our customers with the best beverages around, no matter what your preference is. We’ve got plenty more in the pipeline too, so stay tuned. What does it mean to you to be able to create and can everything on-site at Bandwagon?
We think there is a major hole in the market for good quality canned coffees and drinks. Being able to create and can them in-house means we get to ensure every can is brimming with the quality product we want to provide to our customers. Having full control over what goes into these cans means we are only serving up ingredients we believe in. We love that we can now offer this. We will also “can to order” at the customer’s request to suit everyone’s tastes and preferences.
Can you walk us through the process, from concept to can?
As soon as we had the idea we researched what flavours we could add to our coffee range. We chose P.E.T. cans that are transparent and fully recyclable. We then developed a specially designed minimal logo just for this project. We had these made into stickers to add our custom branding to the cans. We then carefully brew or mix our flavours and fill. It could be coffee, cold brew, matcha, ube etc, it’s limitless, really!! Once filled, we add the lid and place into our
machine for sealing. Then it’s straight to our display fridge for our customers to self-serve.
What can customers expect when they crack open one of these drinks?
Customers can expect fresh, cold, delicious house-made products, full of flavour with no additives or preservatives. We have various dairy and non-dairy alternatives available to cater to everyone.
We love that we can now offer this. We will also “can to order” at the customer’s request to suit everyone’s tastes and preferences.
Do you have a personal favourite from the range, or is that like picking a favourite child?
Hahaha we haven’t picked favourites just yet, but we are a little partial to the beautiful pastel purple colour of the Ube.
Do you see the canned beverages expanding beyond Bandwagon in the future or is the goal to keep it exclusive? At this stage it’s just exclusive to Bandwagon, so you’ll have to drop in to the café if you want to try one! But who knows what the future could bring???
Are there plans to experiment with seasonal or limitededition flavours?
Absolutely we will be experimenting with different flavours and limited editions. We could even run weekend specials in canned form! We know we have some Chai lovers out there so that’s something we would like to look into. Halloween is just around the corner so perhaps a pumpkin spiced latte is on the horizon.
If our customers have something they would really like to try, we’d love to hear their suggestions! Keep your eyes peeled for the next flavour drop.
Thanks guys.

THE DELICATE ART OF PAIRING FOOD AND WINE TO ENHANCE FLAVOUR AND TEXTURE.
The right pairing can enhance the flavours and textures of both wine and food, bringing out their best characteristics. We have put together some general guidelines, so you can work out your wine pairings at home. The key factors are texture and balance. You will be aiming to balance acid, bitter, fat, salt, spice, and sweet. For example, a salad offers acidity and bitterness, whereas barbecued meat presents fat, salt, and spice.
crisp and refreshing profiles.
Red wines are known for their sweetness, tannin structure, and subtle acidity. They pair wonderfully with rich, hearty dishes such as grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and aged cheeses. Sweet wines are typically paired well with complimentary desserts such as spicy or salty cheeses, due to their naturally higher sweetness and crisp acidity.
The richness of the dish will also help you narrow down which wine to choose. If the dish is light, go for a light bodied wine. If the dish is very rich, go for a full bodied wine.
Sparkling and white wines typically have a slight sweetness and strong acidity. This allows them to be paired with light seafood, fresh salads, or creamy cheeses to complement their
Typically food and wine pairings are lead by the dish due to convenience. You can either pair to match, or pair to complement. Using lasagne as an example, as the béchamel sauce is the dominant flavour you would pair a wine with prominent acidity, as that would complement the fattiness of the béchamel
sauce, such as a pinot gris or sauvignon blanc. Alternatively, you could pair a wine which exhibits matching characteristics, like the creaminess of the dish, with the creaminess of viognier or chardonnay. The richness of the dish will also help you narrow down which wine to choose. If the dish is light, go for a light bodied wine. If the dish is very rich, go for a full bodied wine.
Your other option is starting with a wine. If you have chosen a riesling, this variety is typically acidic and sweet, with a light to medium body, so it is the perfect complement for moderately spicy and creamy food, such as butter chicken. The acidity balances creaminess, and the sweetness balances the spiciness without overpowering it. If you would prefer to begin your food and wine pairing journey with the classic pairings, start with either shiraz and sirloin, pinot noir and duck, or piquepoul blanc and oysters. Cheers to enjoying good food and wine, Alex Cassegrain.

PENTEK
Hi Julie, can you tell us a little about your background and your connection to Port Macquarie?
I’m a born-and-bred Port Macquarie local – my family’s farming history in the region going back to the 1850s. Growing up, my parents were always busy with property and real estate, so it wasn’t long before I caught the bug too. I went on to manage a local real estate agency for about 10 years, then decided to mix things up with a big adventure and moved to Copenhagen for 5 years, which was an amazing base for travel. Eventually, Port called me back home in 2004, and I’ve been here ever since. You’re now about to launch a new business here in Port Macquarie. What inspired you to take the leap and what’s your vision?
It really came down to seeing a need for a truly local, people-first approach in our community. That’s how The Strata People was born. Our vision is all about keeping things approachable, open and easy to understand. Between us, our team has 75 years of experience and we’re passionate about using that knowledge to support the
people and properties that make Port such a wonderful place to live.
The leap into starting a new business is a big one. What’s been the most exciting (or nerve-wracking!) part of the process so far?
Honestly, we’ve been excited the whole way through. Getting creative with our branding, colours and logo was a highlight – it gave us a chance to flex a different side of ourselves and have a bit of fun with the process.
I’ve built so many great friendships and connections, and there’s just something really special about the way people look out for each other here.
What do you love most about living and working in the Port Macquarie community?
It has to be the people. Port might not be huge, but the sense of community here is massive. Over the years, I’ve built so many great friendships and connections, and there’s just something really special about the way people look out for each other here.

When you’re not working, where might we find you relaxing or catching up with friends? (we hear Little Shack is a bit of a favourite!)
Guilty! I do love Little Shack – you just can’t beat that view, and their spicy margarita is a bit of a go-to. I also love walking along the beach with friends and more recently I’ve been getting into caravanning, which has been such a fun way to unwind.
Finally, what’s next for you and your new business? What can the Port Macquarie community look forward to seeing from you in the months ahead?
We’re really looking forward to our launch and information night later this month – it’ll be a chance for people to meet us, learn more about the business, and get to know our amazing team. I just feel really grateful to be starting this new chapter here at home, surrounded by such a welcoming and supportive community.
STONE FRUIT SEASON HAS ARRIVED
There’s a certain kind of excitement that October brings, and it is not just my birthday...(LOL). The days are longer, the mornings a little warmer, and the air is filled with that unmistakable sense that summer is on its way. And if there’s one thing that truly signals the change of season here at Growers Market, it’s the arrival of stone fruit. Peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, cherries, the family of stone fruit is like a parade of summer’s best flavours, each one juicy, vibrant, and impossible not to love. October is the start of this glorious season, and with it comes the promise of backyard barbecues, fruit bowls overflowing with colour, and that first bite into a perfectly ripe peach that tells you summer has officially begun.
Why Stone Fruit Is So Special. There’s a reason people wait all year for stone fruit. Unlike apples or bananas that you can buy any time, stone fruit is seasonal and short lived. That means when it arrives, it’s worth celebrating. These fruits are grown for warm weather, needing long days and plenty of sunshine to ripen to their full sweetness, and while they look and taste incredible, stone fruit is also packed with goodness. High in vitamins A and C, full of antioxidants, and loaded with natural fibre, they’re not just a treat for your taste buds, they’re a gift to your health. Plums can help with digestion, peaches are known for their skin boosting properties, and cherries are often praised for their anti-inflammatory benefits. In short, nature really knows what she’s doing.
October: The First Taste of Summer. Early October is when you start to see the first peaches and nectarines appear in stores. At the start, they might be a little firmer, a little more subtle in flavour, but as the month rolls on, they get sweeter, juicier, and more abundant. By November and December, stone fruit season is in full swing, with apricots and cherries joining the party and prices dropping as supply increases. Stone Fruit and Sunshine Go Hand in Hand. It’s no coincidence that stone fruit season lines up perfectly with the warmer months. These fruits are made for summer living. They’re refreshing, hydrating, and easy to eat on the go, whether you’re at the beach, at a picnic, or just out in the garden.
Think about it, a slice of chilled watermelon might scream summer, but nothing beats the sticky sweetness of juice running down your hand as you bite into a peach or nectarine straight from the fridge. Add them to a fruit salad, toss them on the barbecue for a caramelised dessert, or simply eat them fresh. Stone fruit is versatile, celebratory, and feels like sunshine in edible form.
A Natural Mood Booster
By the time October comes around, most of us are ready to shake off the last of the winter blues. Shorter days, colder nights, and higher grocery prices take their toll through winter, but spring and summer bring not only lighter days but also lighter moods.
Stone fruit plays a role in that too. Their bright colours and sweet flavours do more than just look pretty, they actually help lift your mood.

Season
with BRYAN HANKS OWNER - GROWERS MARKET
Eating fresh, seasonal fruit has been shown to boost mental wellbeing, giving you more energy, balance, and positivity. There’s something about a bowl of ripe cherries or a platter of sliced nectarines that just makes life feel a little brighter.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to leave the winter meals behind, October’s stone fruit is it. How to Choose and Store Your Stone Fruit
Part of the joy of stone fruit is in picking the perfect piece. Look for fruit with vibrant colour, a little give when pressed gently, and a sweet fragrance, that’s usually a sign it’s ready to eat. If it’s still firm, don’t worry. Leave it at room temperature for a couple of days and it will ripen beautifully.
Once ripe, keep stone fruit in the fridge to maintain freshness, but remember that nothing beats the taste of fruit eaten at room temperature. Take them out an hour before eating for the best flavour and juiciness.
Your Summer Table Starts Here.
October marks the beginning of months filled with abundance. Stone fruit season is more than just fruit, it’s the kick off to outdoor dining, summer holidays, and gathering with family and friends. It’s bowls of cherries at Christmas, apricot jam on toast, nectarines at the cricket, and peaches eaten on the back step while the sun goes down.
As you wander through Growers Market looking for a bargain, don’t pass by the stone fruit display. Pick up a few, take them home, because October is here, the stone fruit has arrived, and summer is finally on its way.

YCharlie O’Derry
ou’re not only a talented singer but also a local student here in Port Macquarie. How have you been balancing school life with your music and being part of The Voice?
It’s definitely been challenging! I’ve had to be really organised, and I’m so thankful that my teachers and principal at Heritage Christian School have been so awesome in helping me coordinate my school work and assessments so that I can fulfil my obligations to The Voice schedule. I’ve had to be really intentional in how I spend my free time outside of school and The Voice, as I also work part-time, play gigs, and need time to work on my
songwriting and music practice.
What first sparked your love for music, and when did you realise singing was something you wanted to pursue seriously?
Local singer-songwriter and student Charlie O’Derry has been making waves nationally as a standout contestant on The Voice Australia. At just 18, he’s balancing school, work, and local gigs with the life-changing experience of performing on one of the country’s biggest stages.
I think the most exciting part has been the chance to perform in front of coaches who have done amazing things in their careers and who have so much wisdom and experience in the industry.
I’ve always loved music. I love the way it makes me feel, and how it can transport me to a whole new place! I started learning the piano when I was about 5 and I grew up singing in church, and we always had music playing at home - it’s always been a part of my life.
When I was about 13, I was going to school in
Grafton, and my music teacher encouraged me to sing in the school chapel band which was when I first sang in public. I also started teaching myself guitar, then when I moved down to Port Macquarie in 2022, my music teacher at Heritage Christian School, Leigh L’Anson, helped greatly in developing my guitar skills, and encouraged me to perform and sing. I started singing lessons in July last year with a local singing teacher, Ian Castle, who has helped me to develop my singing abilities.
I went to a Sticky Fingers concert back in 2022, and I was really struck by the connection between the band and the
audience. I think that was probably the first time I considered pursuing music as a career myself. I started posting recordings on Instagram and TikTok, and connecting with other musicians online.
How did it feel stepping onto The Voice Australia stage for the first time, knowing the whole country was about to hear you sing?
I felt very blessed to have been given the opportunity. It was however pretty daunting stepping out on to the stage, seeing the back of the 4 red chairs, and knowing that Kate Miller-Heidke, Richard Marx, Ronan Keating & Melanie C were sitting on the other side waiting to hear me sing. Also knowing that if I didn’t perform well, it would be seen by the whole of Australia and other parts of the world too, and any career I might have in music could be over before it started!
What has been the most exciting or surprising part of being on The Voice so far?
I think the most exciting part has been the chance to perform in front of coaches who have done amazing things in their careers, and who have so much wisdom and experience in the industry. To be able to get feedback from them is priceless, and I don’t know of any other avenues where this is possible. The exposure that contestants receive before a global audience would also otherwise be out of reach.
The most surprising part for me was the relationships with other contestants that developed. I went in knowing that I would be competing against other singers, and I was a bit worried about how that would play out with all of the different personalities, but I can honestly say that I made some great friendships and everybody was supportive of each other. There are some long days, with a lot of sitting around so myself and many of the other contestants would jam and sing along together. It was amazing, because everyone was so talented.
Which artists or styles of music inspire you most, and how do you bring those influences into your own performances? I love all music, but folk and country music
are my favourites, with a contemporary component. I love the story telling of Gregory Alan Isakov, the emotion of John Farnham, the boldness of Gang of Youths and the vast range of dynamics of Jeff Buckley. I take inspiration from elements of each of these and apply this to my songwriting, immersing myself in all of these styles, to produce my own sound.
Has your time on the show changed the way you see yourself as an artist, or shaped your goals for the future?
I’ve just turned 18 and have only started performing live in the last year, so naturally there’s been a lot of self-doubt, and that feeling of not knowing whether I’m any good. Having all 4 coaches turn for me was so special, and receiving affirmation from them that I do have ability has helped me enormously. Hearing Kate say that I have a gift and that my voice made her feel something that she had never felt before in her coach’s seat, and Richard’s comments about me being a born storyteller and having that thing that can’t be taught, as well as Ronan and Melanie’s responses, has really boosted my confidence and confirmed that I can have a future in the music industry doing the style of music that I love.
What kind of support have you received from your school, friends, and the Port Macquarie community during this journey?
Heritage Christian School, and my friends, have been so supportive. They’ve really got behind me and encouraged me. The support from the local community has blown me away. My Mum grew up in Port Macquarie, and I’ve spent a lot of time here over the years when I’ve come to visit my grandparents and extended family, so it’s always felt like my second home, even though I’ve only lived here for 3 years. The way the local community has backed me, sending through comments of support has meant the world to me. I’d also like to thank the local radio stations and media outlets for getting behind me. Port Macquarie/Hastings truly is the best place on earth. I’d also like to say an extra special thank you to the local music venues who have had me play, and to encourage you all to go along and support our local music scene. The venues do a great job supporting local musicians, and we have some very talented local musos who would love you to come along to their gigs.
Looking ahead, what are your dreams for your music career beyond The Voice?
I’d love to have music as my full-time job, playing live shows, and sharing my songs. I’ve got 5 singles ready to record, which I would love to release after The Voice finishes and hopefully release an EP next year. I released my first single “Calendar” in May this year, so I would love you to check that out and, if you like it, add it to your playlists.
Thanks Charlie.

ANGUS GILL
A er 18 months living and working in Nashville, Golden Guitar winner and ARIA nominee Angus Gill is heading home for a string of shows on the Mid North Coast. We caught up with him ahead of his hometown gigs to talk career highlights, new music, and what it means to return to where it all began.
Hi Angus. After spending the last 18 months in Nashville, what does it feel like to be coming back to Australia and especially the Mid North Coast where it all began?
I’ve been really looking forward to seeing my family, friends and followers. Out of all of the places music has taken me, it’s hard to beat the beauty of the Mid North Coast. I’m only home for 3 weeks before returning to Nashville, but I can’t wait for some beach time, fresh seafood and stopping by some wonderful local establishments: Blue Cow Gelato, Freddo’s Pies, Cassegrain’s Winery & Burger Rebellion.
You’ve had an extraordinary career already, Golden Guitar winner, ARIA nominee, chart-topping albums, and even a Grand Ole Opry performance. Looking back, what have been some of the most surreal “pinch-me” moments so far? All of those moments are up there for me. Performing on the Grand Ole Opry in 2019 with my friend Charles Esten was pretty amazing…standing in the hallowed Opry Circle and singing our song Feet of Clay. Winning my first Golden Guitar was another breathtaking
moment. I’d been nominated many times before, which is an honour in itself, but to hear my name called out by Anne Kirkpatrick made it extra special. I was also very grateful for John Williamson’s kind words when he made a point of endorsing me in his speech that night.
I’m still inspired by what I read, things I overhear, conversations I have, or music I’m discovering for the first time. I try to follow my North Star and keep chasing things that inspire or challenge me.
Your sound seamlessly blends country, folk, rock, and Americana. How has your time in Nashville shaped or evolved your songwriting and musical style?
It’s funny, I don’t think living in Nashville has really changed the way I work. I’m still inspired by what I read, things I overhear, conversations I have, or music I’m discovering for the first time. I try to follow my North Star and keep chasing things that inspire or challenge me. You’ve collaborated with some incredible artists from Steve Earle and Jim Lauderdale to Diesel and Mark Seymour. What’s one lesson or piece of advice from these collaborations that has really stayed with you?
The common thread with most of these artists is they’re what I’d call career artists. They’ve never played it too safe. They follow their muse, they’re not afraid to break new ground or push their sound in a new direction, and that’s something I always strive to do too. People have been trying to put me in a box since day one, but they’ll never be able to. The song leads and I follow. I remember asking Steve years ago, “how come you’ve done a bluegrass album, then a roots rock record, then a blues one?” He said, “I get bored.” He couldn’t have said it better.
You’re also part of McCusker Gill, your creative partnership with Eric McCusker of Mondo Rock. How did that collaboration come about, and how does it differ from your solo work?
Eric and I were connected through my publisher Philip Mortlock. We met sometime in between Covid lockdowns. I went over to his house for a writing session and we hit it off straight away, bonding over our love of great
songs and the art and craft of songwriting. The first song we wrote was Can You Imagine, inspired by the flood we had here in 2021. Then we wrote a Steely Dan inspired song called Canned Laughter and it became clear we should do a joint side project.
Eric is a meticulous songwriter, as I am too. As he often says, precision creates movement. It took us four years to finish the McCusker Gill EP, released this year, but we were fortunate to have some of our all time favourite players on it, including the world’s most recorded guitar player Dean Parks (Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand) and David Crosby’s son James Raymond. It differs from my solo work because it’s not rooted in country. We let the songs lead. It also gave me the chance to paint with a different brush.
ere’s plenty of humour in the show, along with reimagined Australian classics from my new record Postcards, songs from my back catalogue, and a few ‘hot o the press’ ones too.
Postcards is a collection of Australian pop and rock hits that I’ve reimagined with some of Nashville’s best bluegrass musicians. My publisher commissioned me to make the record. For the first single, I covered Sounds of Then (This is Australia) and had the original songwriter and Ganggajang lead singer Mark Callaghan join me on the track. It recently hit number one on the AMRAP radio charts. I also covered songs like Neil Finn’s Message to My Girl, John Farnham’s Please Don’t Ask Me and Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know. I loved making this record from a singing point of view, because I have a three and a half octave vocal range. I don’t often get the chance to tap into it the way I did on this project.
make ‘em cry, make ‘em think, scare the hell out of ‘em and go home. That’s become a bit of a mantra for me when it comes to live shows. It’s more than just playing songs, it’s about creating a memorable experience. There’s plenty of humour in the show, along with reimagined Australian classics from my new record Postcards, songs from my back catalogue, and a few ‘hot off the press’ ones too. I’m also launching my first novella Departure & Arrival at the shows. It’s a fictional story about the enduring power of friendship during hardship. I can’t wait to get back to my old stomping ground at the Wauchope RSL Club. I’ve played many gigs on that stage, including one when I was 10, when I smuggled a live chicken into the club as a prop for a talent quest!
Where can we keep up to date and find what we need to know about upcoming shows?
You’ve got a new album Postcards coming out October 24. It’s a different direction for you, I hear. What can listeners look forward to on this record?
Local fans are excited to catch you live again, including at your Wauchope RSL show. What can people expect from your Mid North Coast performances?
Dolly Parton once said, make ‘em laugh,
Head over to my website angusgill.com.au to grab tickets or follow me on Facebook or Instagram. We’re playing Royal Hotel Dungog on Friday 17th October, Wauchope RSL on Saturday 18th October and Coutts Crossing Coronation Hall on Sunday 19th October. Hope to see you there.

KEW COUNTRY
From the cricket pitch to the concert stage, SIX & OUT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT MATESHIP, MUSIC, AND A WHOLE LOT OF FUN. AFTER MORE THAN TWO DECADES SINCE THEIR DEBUT, THE BAND OF CRICKETING LEGENDS TURNED ROCKERS ARE BACK, bringing their high-energy show to Coffs Harbour and Laurieton.
ix & Out was born in the SCG dressing room more than two decades ago. Can you take us back to those early days? How did cricket mates turn into a rock band?
Music has always been a huge part of cricket dressing rooms. Robbo had played in bands all his life and challenged Shane and myself to learn guitar so we could start a band. Shane and I did that during a stint in County Cricket in England. We came back and enlisted Cheeks, who grew up singing through his Samoan and Fijian heritage. Brett, a fresh addition to the NSW Squad wanted in, but the only place left was as the bass player. He went out bought a bass and Six and Out was born!
Your song “Can’t Bowl, Can’t Throw” became a cult anthem in the late ’90s. Did you ever imagine back then that the song, and the band, would have such a lasting impact?
We had no idea we would ever play a song in public, let alone record an album with the legendary Garth Porter of Sherbet! Can’t Bowl Can’t Throw was more a tongue in cheek look at things we had stuffed up at certain stages of our life than the incident itself. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine the song would have a lasting impact. Intrigue remains over who said it, Cameraman Joe or Warnie (it was 100% Joe!). Joe’s famous words became
a lexicon of Aussie sport, and our song is always associated with that. It hit home to us at our first gig in 23 years when the crowd belted it out word for word. We couldn’t believe people would remember us let alone know the words to Can’t Bowl Can’t Throw.
After 23 years, you’ve made a huge comeback with a sold-out national tour and the rockumentary Six & Out: The Second Innings. What made now the right time to reunite?
Even as close as we had remained, life gets in the way and we all drifted off into our own little bubbles with families and work. As happens all too often, it takes a shock or tragedy to bring everyone back together. Gav Robbo’s diagnosis with Stage 4 brain cancer in 2019 was the catalyst. For years we’d been looking for an excuse to get back together, we were never going to get a better one than this.
As Robbo said at the time, he had to make a decision to live or die, he made the decision to live, and we were going to do everything in our power to give him something to look forward to. In many ways Six and Out is as much about mateship than anything else.
Killers through to The Rolling Stones, you’ll love a Six and Out gig! We’re more AC/DC than Teddy Swims!
How does it feel to step back on stage as musicians after being celebrated for so long as cricketing greats? Do those worlds still overlap for you?
Hard to compare, but there are similarities. On the cricket field, even though you were part of a team, at times you’re on your own and very vulnerable to all that are watching. It’s the same on stage playing in front of a live audience, there is nowhere to hide. When it all comes together and we nail a show, there’s no feeling quite like it. Yeah, it was great scoring a 100 or taking 5 for or winning a cricket match, but I don’t think the high you get as a cricketer gets near the adrenaline of nailing a live gig.

You’ve always had a reputation for bringing energy and humour to your live shows. What can fans in Coffs Harbour and Laurieton expect from these upcoming gigs?
The number one thing people tell us after watching us for the first time - "we didn’t realise you guys can actually play!” Individually, we’re not the most polished musicians you will ever hear, but we pack a punch on stage and pride ourselves in putting on a great show that leaves people with a smile on their face. If you like classic Aussie rock, mixed with some of the best-known rock songs from artists like The Foo Fighters and
The band has been known for surprise guest appearances by some big names. Can we expect any special cameos or collaborations this tour?
We always say you never know who will turn up at a Six and Out gig. We’re not going to give anything away, but I will say, “expect the unexpected!”
What does the future hold for Six & Out, can fans look forward to more tours, music, or projects?
It took a bit longer than it should have, but we’ve realised life is precious and it’s not a dress rehearsal. We’ll keep on playing as long as people want to keep watching us! With the Ashes coming up this season, we have a huge summer of touring planned and working on some collaborations with The Barmy Army. There’s even talk we may get back in the studio with our old mate Garth Porter and record some new tunes. Stay tuned, our best is still to come!
Thanks guys.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT GUULABAA – PLACE OF KOALA
Activities focus around The Hub, a series of architecturally designed decks that allow visitors to relax and enjoy the forest canopy views while also providing access to Guulabaa’s visitor experiences.
Families looking for a day out can enjoy a picnic or visit the Bunyah Café and meet the Big Koala, a 2.5m-high sculpture painted by Pauline Roods, part of the region’s Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail. There are comfortable bushwalks nearby where visitors might see one of the region’s koalas in its native habitat or book a visitor experience at Koala Conservation Wild Breeding Guulabaa. Here, visitors learn about these shy marsupials while viewing some of the resident koalas. They’ll also meet the carers who rehabilitate sick and injured koalas brought in for treatment.
For those seeking a more active experience, Wildnets Adventure Park offers Australia’s largest suspended playground. With rope- and net-based adventures scaled safely for the ages 3 and up, you can compete challenges, play in the treetops or ride a zipline.
Soon the Bunyah Bilbay Cultural Centre run by the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council will also be opening, along with the Guulabaa Cathedral gathering space, both offering bookable function spaces too.
GUULABAA – PLACE OF KOALA WINS 2025 ASIA PACIFIC AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
Guulabaa – Place of Koala on the NSW Mid North Coast is a special place. Set within Cowarra State Forest, Guulabaa, meaning ‘Place of Koala’ in the local Gathang language, offers a unique blend of conservation, cultural storytelling, and eco-tourism. Visitors experience elevated timber walkways, immersive educational spaces, and First Nations-led narratives that deepen understanding of wildlife, heritage and environmental stewardship – now recognised in Guulabaa’s latest international award win.
In ‘big news’ Guulabaa – Place of Koala has now been recognised as a global exemplar of conservation-led design, Indigenous collaboration and resilient land stewardship, winning an Urban Land Institute (ULI) 2025 Asia Pacific Award for Excellence in Hong Kong. The Urban Land Institute is a global organisation with a mission to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. The Asia Pacific Branch’s Awards for Excellence are among the region’s most respected honours in real estate and urban development, celebrating projects that raise the bar for design quality, sustainability, and positive community impact.
Guulabaa is one of only twelve winners across the Asia Pacific, and one of just two from Australia to be recognised this year.
Guulabaa – Place of Koala was conceived in direct response to the catastrophic 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires, which impacted koala habitats across the region. Developed by the Forestry Corporation of NSW and designed by global architecture and design firm Gensler, the project is grounded in deep collaboration with First Nations communities, from integrating traditional cool burning practices to reduce bushfire risk and restore forest health, to
sharing of culture and language. This approach also enabled the use of local sustainably sourced native hardwoods in construction, setting a benchmark for ecologically responsible and culturally informed design.
“Guulabaa challenged us to rethink what regenerative architecture should be. It is not about making a bold statement, but about designing with care, deep listening, and respect for Country,” said Ken McBryde, design director at Gensler Australia. “This project shows what is possible when we listen to our client, stakeholders, project partners, and First Nations knowledge holders, and design with long-term
THE FUTURE IS ‘GUULABAA’
Guulabaa now serves as a flagship model for forestbased conservation infrastructure in Australia. It has inspired four additional forest tourism sites across NSW and demonstrates how design, Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship can come together to protect biodiversity, support sustainable tourism, and create places of lasting impact.

impact in mind. We are honoured that ULI has recognised that vision.”
Kathy Lyons, Senior Manager, Country & Community at Forestry Corporation, agrees.
“Guulabaa is about more than protecting koalas. It brings people together, across generations, cultures and disciplines to care for Country and build a shared future where nature and community thrive.”
“Its success is already inspiring similar projects across New South Wales, and this ULI award recognition affirms that this model is both powerful and scalable when approached with care and respect.”

FROM LIFELINE NORTH COAST with ANGELA MARTIN
October is Mental Health Month, and on October 10, we observe World Mental Health Day, a global reminder that mental wellbeing is a collective responsibility. While conversations around mental health often focus on self-care, therapy, and mindfulness, one vital ingredient is sometimes overlooked: meaningful human connection.
In an age of digital overload and social media scrolls, it’s easy to mistake interaction for intimacy, but true connection goes deeper. It’s about being seen, heard, and valued, not just liked or followed. Meaningful relationships are the emotional anchors that help us weather life’s storms. They offer comfort in times of distress, celebrate our wins, and remind us we’re not alone.
Studies show that people with strong social bonds are less likely to experience depression, anxiety, and chronic stress. Connection boosts self-esteem, fosters resilience, and even

improves physical health. But it’s not about having dozens of friends, it’s about cultivating depth in the relationships we do have.
So how do we build these connections in a busy, often disconnected world? Here are five practical ways to start:
1. Be Present: When you’re with someone, be with them. Put away distractions and give your full attention. Eye contact, active listening, and genuine curiosity can transform a simple chat into a meaningful exchange.
the same. It’s in these honest moments that true connection is born.
4. Join a Community: Whether it’s a book club, volunteer group, or fitness class, shared interests create natural bonds. Community gives us a sense of purpose and belonging.
It’s about being seen, heard, and valued, not just liked or followed. Meaningful relationships are the emotional anchors that help us weather life’s storms.
2. Reach Out: Don’t wait for others to make the first move. A thoughtful message, a phone call, or a coffee invite can be the bridge someone needs. Ask, “How are you, really?” and be ready to listen.
3. Share Authentically: Vulnerability builds trust. When you open up about your own challenges, you create space for others to do
5. Practice Gratitude: Let people know they matter. A heartfelt thank-you, a kind note, or a simple “I appreciate you” can strengthen relationships and uplift both giver and receiver.
This October, let’s take action. Let’s check in on our friends, reconnect with loved ones, and be intentional about the relationships that nourish us. Because when we invest in connection, we invest in our mental health, and in the wellbeing of those around us.
Macquarie rising star Rocky Mann has achieved a major milestone in his rugby league journey, signing a three-year contract with the Newcastle Knights. From backyard footy to the Harold Matthews and SG Ball squads, Rocky is chasing his dream of one day running out in the NRL.
focus interview
i Rocky. Congratulations on signing a threeyear contract with the Newcastle Knights! Can you tell us how it felt when you first got the news?
Mum picked me up from school and told me in the car that my player manager, PSM, who I had only signed with the day before, had been speaking with the Newcastle Knights and they were discussing offers. Then 10 minutes later the player manager called again and he said he had got me a 3 year deal with the Newcastle Knights playing in the Harold Matthews squad (U17s) for 2 years, and SG Ball squad (19s) for the 3rd year! I was really excited as this had been one of my main goals. I had toured the Knights facilities only a couple of weeks before with the Country Combined Catholic Colleges team and I was really impressed.
At just 15, this is a huge step in your sporting journey. When did you first fall in love with rugby league, and who inspired you to play?
have been available in this area. My close group of mates are also involved in rugby league so it’s always fun and competitive to play either alongside or against them.
Signing with the Knights means a big commitment, what does your training schedule look like now compared to before?
Training has now become more intense and harder as I need to travel three times a week to Newcastle to attend the sessions, whereas in Port Macquarie I was only training twice a week. I have always done extra training sessions by myself, either running, going to the gym or speed drills at the park. The Knights have given me an off-season program that I have to work on to improve strength and speed so I have been doing that as well.
I have always loved the sport ever since I could walk. I was always carrying a football around and wanting to pass and kick it with my family, but I actually didn’t start playing rugby league until I was 6. My Dad, grandfather and great grandfather have always inspired me as they played at a high level. My great grandfather, Bruce Mann, and grandfather, Phil Mann, played for the Parramatta Eels. Dad played in the juniors with the Eels and Newcastle Knights too.
What has your rugby league journey looked like so far here in Port Macquarie, and how has the local community supported your growth?
I have played with the Port Macquarie Sharks since Under 7s and I have been coached under my Dad since Under 8s. The Sharks are a great club to play for. I have always played representative footy with my primary and high schools and have participated in any extra training camps or development sessions that
How do you balance school, friends, and family life with the demands of elitelevel training and competition?
skills and solid defence. Off the field, Stephen is a good role model for young kids and he is really funny too. Liam Martin is another NRL player I aspire to be like because he is an aggressive defender and goes hard.
What part of your own game are you most proud of, and what areas are you working hardest to improve?
My strength is probably my attack such as my offloads, hard carries and ball skills. I work really hard on my stamina and speed because they are really important aspects to have to break through a defensive line.
With the Knights being our closest NRL club to Port Macquarie it means I can play for a team at that elite level but I can still live at home in Port Macquarie. I must admit, it’s also going to be pre y cool to be so close to some of the Knights’ NRL players.
It is very hard to balance my life with these commitments as I don’t get much down time. School work can be challenging because I miss lessons every now and then to travel and play, so I try to make sure I get as much work done as possible in class so I don’t fall behind too much. I catch up with friends on a weekend as much as I can by either playing a round of golf or going for a fish. Who are some of the players you look up to in the NRL, and what do you admire most about their game?
In the NRL, I look up to Stephen Crichton as a player because he is the same position as me (centre) and is a hard ball runner which is what I want to be. He has really good ball
What excites you most about being part of the Newcastle Knights club?
I’m excited to develop my game to reach my full potential. I’m also excited that I will be training and playing under some really big names in the game such as coaches, trainers and management. With the Knights being our closest NRL club to Port Macquarie it means I can play for a team at that elite level but I can still live at home in Port Macquarie. I must admit, it’s also going to be pretty cool to be so close to some of the Knights’ NRL players. I’ve already met Kalyn Ponga and a few other Knights players, they were really friendly and welcoming.
Have you set yourself any short-term or long-term goals now that you’ve signed this contract? What are your aspirations for your future in rugby league?
My short-term goal is to make the starting team and my long term goal is to stay with the Knights as long as I can. Hopefully this opportunity will lead me to playing in the NRL for the Newcastle Knights.
Thanks Rocky.
Chitra King
Local business owner Chitra King is bringing glamour and generosity together with HER UPCOMING GOLDEN GALA. A BLACK-TIE FUNDRAISER IN SUPPORT OF THE HASTINGS EDUCATION FUND BLENDING LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, COMEDY, AND MUSIC with a meaningful cause. e event promises to be an unforge able night that helps create brighter futures for local students.
Hi Chitra. Tell us about the upcoming gala you’ve got planned, what can guests expect on the night and what makes it special?
The Gala dinner is on 1st November in the Auditorium at Panthers Leagues Club in Port Macquarie. It will be a black tie and evening gown event with all proceeds going to Hastings Education Fund. We plan a night of fundraising, comedy, great music and dancing with entertainment coming from interstate and overseas for the night. I would
like everyone to have a fantastic night while we raise money for a very important local charity.
What first inspired you to host this fundraiser, and why did you choose a gala-style event?
Firstly, I’ve been blessed to have this opportunity to host this event. What inspired me, is to support the Hastings Education Fund who look after students in need who come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. I always have this desire to help others when I can, and am capable of supporting others, especially to these
students who want to change their life for a better future through education. I will go out of my way to do it. It makes me feel good to be able to help others in need and make a difference in someone’s life. After all, that is what life is about, doing something meaningful in this life. Why did I choose a gala-style event? I like giving back in style, and to people who donate something for this charity cause, I really do appreciate it. In return, I would like them to enjoy and have a good time in an elegant atmosphere, formal setting, unique experience with red carpet and have the opportunity to dance with live

meaningful charity and worthwhile charity to me. Meeting some other students and hearing their stories has reinforced my desire to help this charity.
Education can be such a powerful tool. What impact do you hope the funds raised will have on local students and their futures?
After attending university in Indonesia, I came to Australia with very little english and no Australian recognised qualifications. I spent many years first improving my english, obtaining basic work skills and then attended university in Sydney. This desire for education, that is still within me today, has been the basis of me starting and running several businesses over the years. Without this education I could not have achieved my goals. I want to make sure that everyone else who has a desire to learn and improve themselves has the same opportunities that I have had. That is why Hastings Education Fund, and what it does, is so important to me. I hope the funds raised will continue to support and enable some growth in the work of the Hastings Education Fund allowing continued support of students to complete university, and hopefully return to our local area and help build our community.

The Hastings Education Fund is a wonderful local cause. Can you share why this particular charity is so meaningful to you personally?
Education is very important to me, and I have been lucky enough to attend university in two countries. Hastings Education Fund enables young people with talent but limited support to attend university and this is a very
Organising a gala is no small task! What has been the most exciting, and perhaps most challenging, part of bringing it all together?
The most exciting part for me is organising the entertainment so everybody can have a great night. The challenging part is I have only lived in this community for 5 years and had my business for only 3 years, so my personal network is not huge. Getting people to commit and attend a black tie gala dinner is not easy. Can you tell us about some of the
highlights you’ve got planned for the evening?
There are many highlights planned for the night but the major ones would be Radio Club Band from Brisbane. They have a wide following and have performed at numerous dinners, fund raisers, corporate events and concerts so they will bring a great night of music. Our Master of Ceremonies and comedian, Anita Wigle’It with her drag queen show will be hilarious. She is currently starring in New Zealand’s version of PriscillaQueen of the Desert and will bring plenty of laughs on the night.
How has the local community and your clients at Frangipani Hair and Beauty spa supported you in this initiative?
Clients at Frangipani Hair and Beauty Spa really support me in my charity goals. Together we have previously raised money for the Hastings Education Fund and other charities I support. The local community also getting behind these initiatives makes it all come together encouraging me to continue trying to help.
You’re known for giving back to the community. How do you see events like this gala shaping the connection between local businesses and local causes?
It’s vitally important for local businesses to be supporting the towns they live and work in, and I continue to see them actively supporting many worthwhile causes in our town. The gala dinner is a way for local businesses or members of the community to have a great night together while helping an important local cause.
How can people in the community get involved; whether by attending, donating, or supporting the Hastings Education Fund in other ways?
People can book tickets directly through 123tix.com.au/events/49428/golden-gala and if they wish to be a sponsor on the night or donate any items to the auction raising funds, they can call me on 0432 922 800. Thanks Chitra.

Why Your Skin Suddenly Can't Tolerate Anything
"My skin used to handle everything, and now even my moisturiser makes me red." If you're in your 40s or 50s and suddenly find yourself saying this, you're not alone, and you're not imagining it. Dr. Kristy Kostalas, Clinical Director at PMAC, explains: "We're treating more women who describe their skin as suddenly 'sensitive' when what's really happening is a fundamental shift in how their skin functions due to hormonal changes."
The Hidden Culprit: Declining Oestrogen
During perimenopause and menopause, oestrogen levels fluctuate wildly before ultimately declining. Oestrogen is crucial for maintaining your skin's protective barrier, hydration levels, and ability to repair itself. "When oestrogen drops, several things happen simultaneously," explains Dr. Kostalas. "The skin becomes thinner, produces less natural oil, and loses its ability to retain moisture. The protective barrier that once shielded you from irritants becomes compromised." This explains why the vitamin C serum you've used for years now stings, or why your trusted cleanser leaves your face feeling tight and irritated.
Modern Life Compounds the
Problem
While hormonal changes are the primary driver, our modern environment makes everything worse like increased pollution, blue light exposure, and stress. "The cumulative effect of harsh scrubs, high-concentration
THE PERIMENOPAUSE SENSITIVITY CRISIS:
acids, and daily retinoids becomes apparent when oestrogen can no longer compensate for this damage." notes Dr. Kostalas.
The PMAC Doctor-Led Approach: Gentle Restoration
At PMAC, we address the underlying hormonal changes. As a medical clinic, our approach focuses on three key principles: Barrier Repair First: Before introducing any active ingredients, we work to restore your skin's protective barrier using ceramiderich formulations and gentle, pH-balanced cleansers.
Strategic Simplification: We help patients strip back their routines to essentials, often reducing a 10-step regimen to 4-5 carefully chosen products allowing the skin to recover.
Professional Support: Specialising in hormonal skin changes our clinicians can recommend treatments like LED therapy, chemical peels, or bio-remodeling injections that support skin structure without triggering sensitivity.
Treatment for Sensitive Hormonal Skin
PMAC offers several treatments designed specifically for oestrogen-deficient skin: Gentle LED Therapy helps reduce inflammation and supports cellular repair without any downtime or irritation.
Customised Chemical Peels using ultragentle formulations can improve texture and hydration without the aggressive peeling associated with traditional treatments.
Bio-remodeling Treatments help restore skin structure and hydration from within, addressing the fundamental changes caused by hormonal decline.
Prescription Skincare Solutions compounded specifically for menopausal skin can provide targeted support for barrier repair and inflammation reduction.
The Importance of Professional Assessment
"Self-diagnosing 'sensitive skin' and buying gentle products off the shelf rarely solves the problem," warns Dr. Kostalas. "What you need is a comprehensive assessment of how hormonal changes are affecting your individual skin, followed by a targeted treatment plan." At PMAC, we use advanced imaging technology to assess barrier function, inflammation levels, and structural changes invisible to the naked eye allowing us to create a truly personalised approach.
Your Skin Can Recover
The most important message for women experiencing this sensitivity crisis is that it's not permanent. "We regularly see patients who thought they'd have to live with reactive, uncomfortable skin discover that with proper care and professional support, they can return to using effective active ingredients and achieve healthy, glowing skin again," says Dr. Kostalas. PPELVIC PAIN: KNOW THE DIFFERENCES AND WHEN TO SEEK
elvic pain is a reality for many women, yet it is often brushed aside, normalised, or endured in silence. Whether it comes as a sharp stab, a heavy ache, or a cramp that lingers, pain in the pelvic region can interfere with work, relationships, exercise, and daily comfort. It is common, but that does not make it normal, and recognising the causes is the first step towards effective treatment and recovery.
What is Pelvic Pain? Pelvic pain refers to discomfort felt in the area below the belly button and between the hips. It can be sudden and short-lived, or persistent, lasting for months and becoming a chronic condition. Research shows that around one in five women will experience persistent pelvic pain, but many wait years before seeking help. This delay can make pain worse, affect quality of life, and increase feelings of isolation. Pelvic pain is not a single diagnosis. Instead, it can arise from several overlapping causes such as hormonal, muscular, digestive, or urological. That is why understanding the differences matters.
Common Causes of Pelvic Pain
Period Pain. Mild cramping with periods is expected, but when pain is severe, long-lasting, or unresponsive to common treatments, it may signal an underlying issue such as endometriosis. Pain that interrupts school, work, or daily life should always be investigated.
Endometriosis. This condition occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it, often on the ovaries, bladder, or bowel. Because this tissue responds to hormonal cycles, it can lead to scarring, inflammation, and significant pain. Pain may occur during periods, during sex, with bowel motions, or throughout the month.
Adenomyosis. In this condition, endometrial tissue grows into the muscle wall of the womb. Women may notice heavier or more painful periods and discomfort that was not present before.
Bladder and Bowel Issues. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common contributor, with bloating, cramping, or pain that improves after passing stool or wind. On the bladder side, urinary tract infections and conditions such as painful bladder syndrome can cause ongoing ache, urgency, or pressure.
Pelvic Floor Muscle Pain. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that can become overactive, tense, or develop painful trigger points. This might feel like stabbing or burning pain, discomfort with sex or tampon use, or aching after exercise.
Vulvodynia. Some women experience persistent vulval pain, often described as stinging or burning, even without an obvious cause. It can affect sitting, intimacy, and confidence.
HELP
When to Seek Help. Not all pain is a warning sign, but there are situations where you should seek medical advice: Period pain that stops you from functioning normally or does not improve with simple treatments.
New pain during sex, bowel motions, or when using tampons.
Urinary symptoms such as burning, urgency, or blood in the urine.
Pain that keeps returning or progressively worsens.
Unexplained weight loss, bleeding between periods, or persistent digestive symptoms. Keeping a diary of when pain occurs, how severe it is, and what eases or aggravates it can be a valuable tool for health professionals.
Taking the First Step. Pelvic pain is complex, and often no single cause explains it all. That is why a team approach is usually best. GPs, gynaecologists, gastroenterologists, pain specialists, and psychologists may all play a role in diagnosis and management. Early support leads to better outcomes and helps women avoid years of silent suffering.
The key message is simple: pelvic pain may be common, but it is never normal. You do not need to put up with it. By recognising the differences in pelvic pain and seeking timely help, you can take steps towards relief, recovery, and a better quality of life.
Tamara Dobson
Illume Beauty and Make Up is fast becoming synonymous with quality, creativity, and individuality. The popular face behind the brand, Tamara Dobson, continues to excel in her industry, growing her business and catering for a variety of needs through stylised design elements that are uniquely her own. Focus caught up with the inspiring Tamara to find out what has been on her beauty-fuelled agenda.
Hi Tamara. Thanks so much for speaking with Focus and congratulations on all you are achieving within your business. Your work is truly reflective of your own talent and tenacity in the field. Can you please share a snapshot of your services and offerings provided?
Thank you so much, it really means a lot! At Illume Beauty and Make Up, I like to think of us as a one-stop shop for all things beauty, especially when it comes to preparing for events, weddings, and formals. My services cover everything from professional makeup application to tanning, skin prep, lash and brow treatments, and more.
What I really pride myself on is making sure that each service is tailored to the individual. No two faces, events, or personal styles are the same, so I always aim to create a look that reflects each person’s personality and enhances their natural beauty.
I’m also lucky enough to be co-located with the amazing Bree and her team at Jennifer’s Hair Salon in Wauchope. Bree has all things hair and
nails covered, so between us, clients can walk in and leave completely event-ready, from head to toe. That collaboration really helps create a relaxed and fun environment for clients, and I think that energy comes through in the results.
Part of your business ethos is your commitment to serving the Wauchope and Hastings community through your beauty services. You’ve just finished working on this year’s Stars of The Hastings Dance For Cancer extravaganza as one of the makeup artists. How did you find the experience?
I absolutely loved it! It was such an incredible event to be part of and I feel really honoured to have been involved. The Stars of the Hastings is so much more than just a performance, it brings the community together for such a meaningful cause, and being behind the scenes made it even more special.
I had the opportunity to create some creative and fun stage makeup looks during the day, which was a little different from my usual event work and really allowed me to flex my creative side. In the evening, I teamed up with the lovely DJ from Makeup by DJ to do touch-ups and keep everyone performance-ready under those

bright stage lights.
Another highlight for me was working with local star Maddie Wilson in the lead-up to the event. Together, we hosted a makeup masterclass as part of her fundraising efforts, which not only supported a great cause but also allowed me to connect with more people in our community. It was such a rewarding experience all around, and I’ll definitely be saying “yes” to being involved again in the future.
Over the last five years in business, you’ve grown enormously within your brand, both personally and professionally. What have been some of your highlights to date?
Wow! There have been so many moments that stand out. The biggest milestone for me has definitely been moving into a full-time salon space in the past 12 months. It’s something I had dreamed about for a long time, and finally making that move gave me the opportunity to collaborate more closely with Bree and her team, which has been fantastic.
I’ve also had the privilege of working with film casts, which was such an exciting experience and definitely pushed me creatively. Of course,
weddings are always such a highlight, there’s something so special about being with a bride and her bridal party on one of the most important days of their lives. I love helping people feel beautiful, confident, and calm on those big milestone days.
Another personal highlight has been continuing to grow my own skills. Over the last year, I’ve attended some amazing masterclasses with some of Australia’s best makeup artists. I’m always learning, experimenting, and refining my craft, it’s what keeps me motivated and inspired.
What does success mean to you, and what is on the horizon for Illume going forward?
For me, success isn’t necessarily about being the busiest or the biggest, it’s about balance and impact. Success is creating a business where clients walk away feeling truly seen, cared for, and beautiful in their own skin. If someone leaves my chair feeling more confident than when they sat down, then I consider that a success.
On a personal level, success is also about constantly evolving. I never want to stop
learning, growing, or challenging myself creatively.
It’s something I had dreamed about for a long
time, and
finally making
that move gave
me
the opportunity to collaborate more closely with Bree and her team, which has been fantastic.
Looking ahead, I’m really excited about a few things! I’ve been working with other local businesses to put together more hands-on workshops and masterclasses, which I think will be a fantastic way to share tips and techniques while connecting with our community.
In the salon, we’re just about to launch our brand-new makeup bar, which I’m so excited about. It will give clients the chance to come in, play with products, and have a more interactive beauty experience. And, watch this space, we’re also expanding into retail, with some amazing professional makeup products soon to be available directly in the salon. It’s a really exciting next step.
We are well and truly into weddings and events season. Do you have any special promotions available for new clients?
Yes! I know how much planning goes into
weddings, so for October, I’m offering 20% off wedding makeup trials for 2026 brides-to-be. Trials are such an important part of the wedding journey, they give us the chance to test out different looks, talk about timelines, and ensure everything feels perfect for the big day. This promotion is my way of making it a little easier for brides who are getting organised early.

Cheadspace
headspace Port Macquarie has recently been recognised at the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, shining a spotlight on the incredible contribution of their Youth and Family Reference Groups. At the heart of their work is a dedicated team of volunteers whose lived experience, passion, and community spirit are shaping vital mental health services for young people across the Hastings region.
PORT MACQUARIE
ongratulations on headspace Port Macquarie’s recognition at the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards! Can you tell us what this award means to your team and volunteers?
This award is such a meaningful recognition of the heart and effort our volunteers put into supporting young people in the Hastings community. Our Youth Reference Group (aged 18–25) and Family Reference Group (aged 25 and older) are truly the soul of the work we do, they are hands-on in every sense, guiding our decision-making and keeping us connected to what young people and families really need. From co-designing programs, to getting out in the community and spreading the word about headspace, to being strong voices for their peers, their contributions shape everything we do. This recognition validates the power of community and shows our volunteers that their passion and lived experience are not only valued but are making a genuine difference.
Your Youth Reference Group and Family Reference Group were highlighted for their incredible contribution. How do these groups shape the work headspace does locally?
These groups sit at the very centre of how we work. We meet with them regularly, and we consult with them before key decisions are made, their guidance directly shapes the way we operate. The Youth Reference Group gives us invaluable insight into what young people are experiencing, what language resonates with them, and how we can create services that feel safe and accessible. For example, one member recently highlighted that “headspace Day” could be made more engaging for young people, which helped us rethink our approach, while another suggested a trivia night with sexual health information built into the questions - an idea the whole group then led to great success. The Family Reference Group ensures that parents and carers are also part of the conversation, which helps us support not just young people but the ecosystems around them. They are hands-on in everything
we do - from co-designing programs, guiding events and education initiatives, to being active in consultations. Their involvement keeps us grounded and ensures that our services are truly community-led.
What do you think makes your volunteers so passionate about supporting young people in the Hastings community?
Some of our volunteers are driven by lived experience and others are driven by care and passion for their community. Many have walked similar journeys and know how valuable it is to have someone who listens without judgment. Others are motivated by wanting to create opportunities they wished they’d had growing up. That mix of empathy, resilience, and local pride makes our volunteer base incredibly powerful.
headspace offers a wide range of free services for young people aged 12–25. From your perspective, what are the most common reasons young people reach out for support?
The most common reasons we see include
loneliness, bullying, anxiety, depression, and general wellbeing support. Some come in during times of crisis, but many also just need someone to talk to, a safe space to process what’s going on in their lives, and strategies to help them cope and build resilience. Many of your volunteers are young people themselves. How does having youth voices at the table influence the way you deliver services?
It’s absolutely critical. We are, first and foremost, a youth service. That means young people don’t just access headspace; they help shape it. Our Youth Reference Group provides direct feedback on what works and what doesn’t, ensuring services are relevant and respectful. Their voices keep us accountable and grounded in the reality of what it feels like to be a young person navigating today’s world. Winning this award shines a light on mental health in regional communities. Why is it so important to have accessible, youth-focused services here in Port Macquarie?
Early intervention is key. Having services available locally means young people can get the right support for diagnosis, treatment, and management before issues escalate. Unfortunately, there is simply not enough funding directed towards early intervention services and programs to support youth mental health, and that’s a serious long-term risk. These young people are the future of our communities, and without the right support, if they’re even a fraction off track, they may continue down that trajectory. Accessible, youth-focused services help shift those trajectories towards healthier, more hopeful outcomes.
Our Youth Reference Group provides direct feedback on what works and what doesn’t, ensuring services are relevant and respectful.
Looking ahead, what are some of headspace Port Macquarie’s goals or initiatives for continuing to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the area?
We are committed to expanding and tailoring our services. Some of our current goals include:
• Establishing an early intervention ADHD Clinic for young people to improve access to timely assessment and support. This would bring together psychiatry services for diagnosis and treatment, clinical psychology for psychometric testing, and GP services for ongoing review and management.
• Increasing services and resources for neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ youth, ensuring all young people feel seen and supported.
• Continuing to strengthen partnerships with schools, community groups, and families to create wraparound support networks. Finally, for people in the community who might be inspired by this award win, how can they get involved with headspace as a volunteer or supporter?
People can get involved in a number of ways: by applying for one of our Reference Groups (youth or family), following us on social media to stay up to date, and coming along to our community events; for example, headspace Day on October 9th, 2025 at Roto House. Adding awareness-raising and word of mouth is also really valuable: getting the word out about events and telling a friend who might enjoy a free way to connect and learn skills helps us reach more young people, which can sometimes be a challenge. Even just starting conversations about youth mental health helps to break down stigma, and for those in a position to do so, advocating for more funding for early intervention is one of the most powerful ways to support young people. Thanks.
CHOOSING
Salvos Home Care
When looking into home care, the best first step is to research different home care providers and see which align best with what you or your loved one need. Create a provider shortlist and meet each of them in person to ask any questions. It is important to note your interactions with the staff members – are they helpful and open to answering your questions, for example, or did you feel rushed when speaking with them?
“Find out about their range of services, availability, locations, and if and how they can customise their offer to accommodate your unique needs,” says Sibel Bas, one of the Operations Managers for Salvos Home Care.
“These conversations can give you a good understanding of who they are. You can also think about possible care needs you or your loved one may need down the track, and whether a provider can cater for both your
short-term and long-term requirements.”
Through allocating a dedicated Home Care Partner to each client, this enables a provider to have an in-depth understanding of a client’s overall care needs especially as they change over time.
“A good home care provider sets aside time to get to know their new clients, their carers and other people important to them, if the client wishes,” says Sibel. “Once the older person chooses a provider, they would have a dedicated Home Care Partner who manages their care plan.”
A Home Care Partner should regularly consult with the client to review these changes so that there is flexibility to accommodate any changes. It is also useful to learn about the training that a provider’s staff members take part in and if their staff are police-checked and first aid certified. Another consideration is a provider’s reputation and how long they have been operating. My Aged Care has useful tools to help gauge the quality of providers’ services, such as the non-compliance checker, and you can see which providers are following the Aged Care Standards.

DON’T LET YOUR BENEFITS GO TO WASTE IN 2025!
Can you believe we’re heading towards the end of the year already? While you’re not yet planning Chrissy lunch, sorting out school holidays and wondering if it’s too early to hang the tinsel (it’s never too early), here’s one thing you don’t want to forget...
Your Private Dental Benefits
May Be About to Expire!
That’s right - most health funds hit the big reset button on December 31st, and if you haven’t used your included dental extras by then, they don’t roll over... they disappear. Poof. Gone, and lets face it you pay for these benefits.
So What Does That Mean for You?
Well, if you’ve been putting off a dental check-up, clean, or treatment for you or the kids, now’s the time to use what you’ve paid for. Make check up and clean appointments now with time to re book if you need work before the end of year.
You’ve already forked out for your private
health cover so make sure you actually get something back!
Tick It Off Before the Tinsel Goes Up!
If it’s been 6 months (or longer, no judgment!) since your last check-up, we recommend booking ASAP. October to December fills up fast, with patients trying to squeeze in their appointments before their benefits expire.
Whether it’s:
• A general check-up and clean
• A filling or treatment you’ve been putting off
• A freshen-up for your smile before the silly season photos (perhaps some whitening?) Or just peace of mind that everything’s in good shape.
Now’s the time to book in and make the most
of those hard-earned health benefits!
Also labs close and people wind back around December 15th so it becomes increasingly difficult to get advanced work done in time for end of year.
Need Help? We’re
Just a Call Away!
Not sure what you’re covered for? Give your health fund a buzz and ask what dental extras you still have left to claim this year.
Then, call our friendly team at Sundial Dental and let’s lock in your appointment before time runs out!
Call us on 6583 3533 to book at Port or 6585 2015 to book at Wauchope, or have a look at our services on sundialdental.com.au
Remember – it’s a use it or lose it, and your family’s teeth will thank you for it!

IBUYING YOUR FIRST INVESTMENT PROPERTY? READ
still remember the first couple I helped buy an investment property. They’d spent months scrolling through listings, running the numbers, and secondguessing themselves. When they finally exchanged, the relief was written all over their faces: “We can’t believe we actually did it.”
That’s the thing about buying your first investment property, it’s exciting, but it can also feel daunting. The good news is, with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be. Here are the key steps I walk clients through when they’re ready to take the plunge. Get clear on your “why.”
Ask yourself: are you looking for long-term capital growth, reliable rental income, or simply a way to diversify your wealth? Your answer will shape what type of property makes sense. For example, a city unit might give you steady rental demand, while a suburban house in a growth corridor could deliver bigger gains down the line.
Work out your borrowing power.
Investment loans aren’t assessed the same way as home loans. Lenders look at your income, expenses, existing debts, and even the rent you might earn. Many first-timers either overestimate or underestimate what they can afford. A broker can help you get
pre-approval, so you know exactly what’s in your budget before you start shopping. Budget for more than just the deposit. Stamp duty, conveyancing, building and pest inspections, insurance, property management fees, the list of extras adds up. I always suggest clients keep a buffer for unexpected costs like repairs or vacancies. It’s not just about buying the property, it’s about holding it comfortably over time.
Think long-term.
Property is rarely a quick win. Instead of chasing the highest rent today, look at the bigger picture: infrastructure projects, new schools, or transport links in the area. These can signal future growth. Remember, a cheaper property in the right suburb can often outperform a flashier one in a stagnant market.
Build your team.
Smart investors don’t go it alone. A broker helps structure your loan. An accountant explains tax benefits like depreciation. A property manager handles tenants and maintenance. Surround yourself with the right people, and you’ll make decisions with confidence, not guesswork.
Stay calm, don’t follow the crowd. Two traps catch most beginners: waiting
forever for the “perfect time,” or jumping in because everyone else is buying. Markets will always move up and down, but the real trick is being able to hold your property long enough for growth to do its work.
Structure your loan to suit your goals.
Interest-only or principal-and-interest? Fixed or variable? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. For some, interest-only frees up cash flow in the early years allowing additional principle payments on your owner-occupied property. For others, paying down principal quickly builds equity to assist with the next purchase. This is where tailored advice pays off.
Buying your first investment property isn’t just about finding any old property, it’s about building confidence as an investor. Once you’ve taken that first step, you’ll understand how the numbers stack up, how tenants and managers operate, and how to plan for the future.
You don’t need perfect timing or the perfect property to get started. What you do need is clarity, a solid plan, and the right advice. Not overextending for your first property paves the way for future investments. Take that first step, and the rest becomes much easier. If you want to get a purchase plan in place to buy your first investment then book a Discovery Call via farnsworthfinancial.com.au
LEGAL Light
SOLICITOR PRIEST LEGAL with LORIS HENDY
Disputes that seem intractable and incapable of resolution can often be resolved by mediation. Litigation through the court process can also result in resolution by the decision of a judge, but it is costly, time consuming and the process destroys any relationship the parties may have potentially had into the future. Neighbourhood disputes, family disputes and even commercial disputes often involve people who would benefit from a continuing relationship in one form or another. Mediation enables those relationships to be preserved. Commercial litigants regularly resolve their disputes through mediation because they are acutely aware that time spent in Court is time not spent carrying on the business. Commercial litigants are “programmed” to weigh up the cost of a dispute early on and to try to find ways of resolving the dispute as cost effectively and efficiently as possible. Mediation enables them to do this.
What is mediation?
Mediation is conducted by a trained neutral third party known as a mediator. The role of the mediator is to assist the parties to resolve their dispute generally by applying a process
From Dispute to Resolution:
Mediation Is Key
which effectively encourages the parties to move from their initial positions to a position that each of them “can live with” and is better than not resolving the dispute. A mediation that is done well is very effective and dynamic and encourages a creative approach to solving a dispute.
The process allows parties to identify disputed issues, develop options, consider alternatives and try to reach an agreement without going to court. Alternatively, if the matter is already in court, it enables the parties to resolve a matter before significant costs are incurred, making it a more informal and often less expensive option to court proceedings.
One of the key benefits of mediation is that the solution is one which the parties have achieved by themselves. There are a number of benefits to this:
• The solution can be tailor-made to their specific circumstances. Courts are limited by their jurisdiction and case law as to what decisions they can actually make.
• Both parties are winners because they have decided the solution is acceptable. A courtimposed solution may satisfy the needs of one of the parties but the loser may not accept it and choose to appeal the decision.
• The parties can continue to have a
relationship as a result of the mediation process. This is particularly beneficial in family law matters and neighbourhood matters where the parties necessarily continue to interact with each other.
If you are going to mediation, it is important to be well prepared. It is useful to prepare a chronology of events beforehand. This can assist the mediator and can help you to identify the relevant facts and sources of conflict. In addition to a chronology, you should try to identify:
• The issues that are in dispute
• What is important to you in any resolution of the dispute – i.e. what is your “bottom line”?
• What the other party’s aspirations might be, and how they could be resolved in a settlement
• How you think the dispute may be resolved
• Offers that you would be willing to make
• Possible outcomes if the matter were to proceed to a trial, including the costs.
The solicitors at Priest Legal are all experienced in representing our clients in mediations and can help clients prepare well for the process and understand what to expect.

Parents Need to Know About Australia’s New Social Media Laws - A Guide for Families.
rom 10 December 2025, a new law will make it illegal for under16s to have accounts on most major social media platforms. Here’s what you need to know as a parent of a teen or pre-teen, and how Catholic leaders are responding. What is changing
The Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 means that children under 16 will no longer be able to open or maintain accounts on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube and X (Twitter).
The onus is on the platforms, not on families. If companies fail to take reasonable steps to enforce this ban, they could face fines of up to $49.5 million.
Not every online service is covered. Messaging apps, educational tools, and platforms like WhatsApp, Google Classroom and Kids Helpline remain exempt.
Platforms must take “reasonable steps” to detect under-16 users and close their accounts. Importantly:
• The law does not allow parents to “consent” for their under-16 child to remain on social media. The ban applies regardless.
• Platforms are not expected to enforce invasive age checks on all users. The government has emphasised “minimally invasive” approaches, rather than requiring ID checks for every sign-up.
Why the change is being made
The federal government argues that this law will help protect children from online harm, including exposure to violent or sexual content, cyberbullying, and the addictive designs of platforms.
The ban is intended to shift responsibility away from parents and children alone, making tech companies directly accountable for the wellbeing of young users.
Catholic community response
Catholic education leaders have welcomed greater focus on children’s wellbeing online, but they also urge caution about how the law is applied.
• Privacy and dignity concerns: Dany Elachi, a Catholic father of five from Sydney and leader of the Heads Up Alliance, highlighted the need to balance child protection with privacy rights. He played a significant role in lobbying for the ban.
• Support from bishops: Church leaders have long voiced concern about the impact of social media on the mental health of young people. They see this legislation as an opportunity to reduce harm, while also calling for education in digital citizenship and resilience.
• Parents remain essential: The law may reduce risks, but Catholic schools and communities continue to encourage parents to play an active role in their children’s online behaviour.
What this means for your family
EDUCATION UPDATE
EXECUTIVE GENERAL MANAGER, SCHOOL SERVICES, LISMORE DIOCESE with STEPHEN PARES
If your child is under 16 and has a social media account on a covered platform, that account will likely be removed. You can now lean on the law as support when explaining limits: it’s no longer just “family rules” but a legal requirement. Be prepared for children to turn to alternatives such as messaging apps or games, which may not carry the same restrictions. Risks can remain.
What parents can do now
• Talk early and often – explain the new law, the reasons behind it, and how it aims to protect young people.
• Check the apps – review which platforms your child uses and if they’ll be affected.
• Set family agreements – decide together on healthy screen-time rules, phone use at night, and how to manage friendships online.
• Build digital literacy – teach your child to recognise harmful content, protect privacy, and seek help if something goes wrong.
• Stay connected to school support – Parents are encouraged to access Parent Information Evenings and to access resources such as https://www.ccsp.catholic.edu.au/cybersafety and https://www.esafety.gov.au/
The bottom line
Catholic educators and leaders back laws that protect children but remind families that laws alone cannot replace the strong partnership of parents, schools and communities working together to help young people grow into safe and responsible digital citizens.

Brown
Athalee, can you share the spark that inspired you to create this sanctuary in Port Macquarie?
Every so o en, you stumble across a space that feels like it was created just for you, where time slows, your shoulders drop, and you breathe just that li le bit deeper. Madly Calm Urban Oasis is one of those rare spaces, and at its heart is founder Athalee Brown. With a vision that marries wellness, design, and community, Athalee has created a sanctuary in Port Macquarie that is as much about connection as it is about calm. I had the joy of si ing down with her to learn more about the inspiration, passion, and heart behind Madly Calm.
Having lived and worked overseas for ten years, I eventually returned home to Port Macquarie with my partner, Graham Seers. We’d been away for nearly 15 years, and I felt a deep pull to reconnect with my roots. When I arrived back, I began holding weekly breathing classes and ice bath sessions at Flynn’s Beach Surf Club. I also ran Basics of Breathing workshops at different venues around the area.
Very quickly though I felt the need for a smaller, more personal space, somewhere I could shape with my own vision and style. I wanted to create a sanctuary where, the moment you stepped inside, your heartbeat slowed, your breath softened, and tranquility embraced you.
My path into this work wasn’t straightforward. Originally, I trained in Physical Education Teaching, but just before returning to Australia in 2018, I completed an intensive meditation teacher training course overseas. The breathing component of that training really resonated with me. It gave me the ability to focus better, calm my mind, and bring balance into my life. Intuitively, I had always used breath work in my coaching, so I began looking deeper.
I discovered Patrick McKeown’s Oxygen Advantage method, which has become the foundation of what I teach today. Patrick is such a humble human doing incredible work to highlight how functional breathing influences
every system in the body. That training was just the beginning. It opened a doorway to lifelong learning in breath work, meditation, and hot–cold contrast therapy. Life, to me, is about curiosity, always learning, always challenging, always moving forward.
Many people dream of creating a space that nourishes both body and soul. What challenges did you face in the early days, and how did you stay true to your vision?
To be honest, the vision in the beginning changed almost weekly and it continues to evolve today, guided by the needs of my guests. The biggest challenge wasn’t so much about the physical space, but about helping people understand what Madly Calm actually is.
In a world that’s constantly overstimulated, many people are disconnected from themselves, and often overwhelmed. Breathing is something we all do, yet it’s often overlooked as a tool for health and healing. Raising awareness about how simple breath work can regulate the nervous system and bring us back into “rest and digest” has been at the core of my mission.
At Madly Calm, I keep workshops small, interactive, and deeply personal. The techniques I teach are simple and scientifically based, but incredibly effective in creating better breathing habits for respiratory and overall health.
The space itself has also grown beyond the breathing studio. We’ve created a quirky little garden complete with a steam sauna, vintage
baths repurposed as warm magnesium soaks, and of course, a cool plunge. It’s small, private, and intentionally intimate.
But at the heart of it all, my vision has always remained the same: to offer a space to rest. A space where you can slow down, unwind, and reconnect with what matters most. A space to quieten the noise of life and give your body and mind what they truly need, rest, care, and tenderness.
Every founder has a “why.” What personal experiences or philosophies have shaped the way you approach your business and your guests?
One defining “why” for me was the two years I spent living in India, coaching the national cycling team in preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. My partner Graham and I were responsible for 60 athletes, both men and women which was unheard of compared to other coaches, who had teams of just ten.
We lived with them, trained with them, and experienced every high and low of that journey. What left a lasting impression wasn’t just their athleticism, but their generosity and human kindness. These young athletes didn’t have the best equipment or the latest gear, but what they did have was determination, resilience, and heart. That experience taught me so much about adapting, pivoting, and being open to change. It also reminded me that the human spirit thrives when given opportunity, care, and encouragement.
Port Macquarie is a coastal hub of
creativity and innovation. How has the local community influenced Madly Calm?
I was born and raised in Port Macquarie, back when it was a much smaller, close-knit community. Coming home after years away, I’ve been blown away by the talent, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit that’s blossomed here.
One highlight for me was co-hosting a breath work Masterclass at Luminosity with my good friend Benny Cudmore. The response from students was so heartwarming, and it really highlighted the hunger young people have for tools that support their wellbeing. There are so many incredible wellness offerings in our area now. I see Madly Calm as a complement to that, a quieter, more intimate escape where people can pause in the middle of busy lives and reconnect with themselves.
Who has been a significant voice in your life journey?
My dad, Charlie Brown, was my rock. We were incredibly close, and losing him when I was just 25 was devastating. Not long after, my brother Paul was diagnosed with cancer, and within nine months, he too had passed away at only 41. Those two men were not only father and son but also best mates, funny, wise, and deeply kind. They were my sounding boards, my guides, and my protectors. Even now, I still ask myself what they would do in certain situations.
Back then, I was in deep grief but didn’t know how to navigate it. Looking back, I realise that if I had known then what I know now about
breath work and nervous system regulation, I might have soothed my wounded heart with more kindness and care.
Today, I draw inspiration from the people who walk through Madly Calm’s doors, single parents juggling work and home life, mental health workers prioritising their own wellbeing, teachers, midwives, small business owners. Their courage to choose rest over busyness inspires me every single day.
Finally, what lights you up most when someone walks through your doors and where do you hope this journey takes you next?
Every face that walks through Madly Calm is a gift. What lights me up most isn’t just seeing them arrive, but witnessing the transformation when they leave. Sometimes it’s a subtle softness, sometimes a glowing smile, sometimes simply a gentler way of carrying themselves.
When people message me later to say they slept deeply for the first time in weeks, or that they finally felt grounded after a long stretch of anxiety, it touches me deeply. Knowing I’ve made even a small difference in someone’s life, that is what makes my heart sing.
As for the future, I hope to keep learning, keep growing, and keep holding space for people who need rest, connection, and calm. Wherever the journey leads, my vision will remain the same, to create a sanctuary where people can breathe, soften and calm their busy minds.

Four years ago, we opened our retail store to bring a curated selection of timeless, design-led pieces to the local community. Making great style accessible for everyday living.
How important is trust when working with your clients, and how do you build it? Trust is everything. We’re often working in people’s homes during really pivotal moments, selling, renovating, or just needing a refresh. We build trust by being transparent, reliable, and approachable. We listen carefully and follow through on every detail. Most of our work comes through word-of-mouth, which says a lot about the relationships we’ve built.
How has your business evolved over the years, and how are you keeping up with changes? The business has grown from a design service into a full lifestyle offering. We now have a retail store, a strong online presence, and a wider reach than ever before. We stay current by following both international trends and the evolving needs of our clients here on the coast. It’s about blending fresh ideas with timeless style and always keeping the client experience front and centre.
In one sentence, why should people choose your business? Because we bring a spark of city elegance to the coast, with a personal and elevated touch that sets us apart. Thanks Amanda.

With a balance of flexibility, transparency, and genuine hands-on support, Baygrove ensures each home is tailored to suit individual lifestyles, needs, and budgets. And with all-inclusive turnkey pricing, there are no hidden costs and no surprises.
For Baygrove, it’s simple: being local means building with care, pride, and a personal touch –because who better to build your home than the people who call the Mid North Coast home too.
Can you introduce us to your team and the people behind Baygrove Designer Homes?
Our Baygrove Designer Homes team is led by owners Jordan Morris, Nathan Shields, and Allison McGuire, who together bring more than 35 years of experience to the local building industry. Jordan, as Construction Manager, ensures every project meets the highest standards of workmanship. Nathan, our Estimating and Logistics Manager, draws on his residential construction experience to play a key role in management and client support. Allison, as Office Manager, contributes a wealth of business and financial expertise. With a peoplefirst approach, the leadership team makes sure every client feels supported throughout their building journey.
They are joined by a passionate and talented group who help bring each home to life. Leading our Sales team is Angela Eccles, New Home Consultant, and Estelle Addison, Display Host, who guides clients through the first steps of their Baygrove journey, ensuring they feel informed, comfortable, and inspired. Jade Lalor, Client Liaison Officer, supports clients from pre-construction right through to handover, making the process smooth and stress-free. On site, Jai Whelan, Site Supervisor, brings over 10 years of construction experience and an eye for detail to ensure every home is delivered with care and precision. Behind the style and finishes
of our homes is Jessica Hodge, Interior Designer, who helps create spaces that combine creativity, practicality, and personal expression.
Together, the Baygrove team blends local knowledge, technical expertise, and genuine care. Our shared goal is simple: to create homes our clients love, while ensuring the journey to get there is as enjoyable as the finished result.
How does your team ensure a smooth and stress-free building process for clients?
We know that building a home can feel overwhelming, which is why clear communication is so important to us. From the very first chat with our sales team, we aim to make the process simple, transparent, and stress-free.
Our whole team works closely together, so every detail of a client’s home is understood from concept through to completion. This way, clients always know who to turn to with questions, and we can provide guidance and support every step of the way.
Our turnkey inclusions are upfront and easy to understand, while still offering flexibility for personal touches. Timelines are shared honestly, and we keep clients updated along the way so there are no surprises.
For us, building trust is just as important as
DESIGNER HOMES
building homes. We want every client to feel supported, informed, and confident throughout the journey, knowing they’ve got a team beside them who genuinely cares about delivering a home they’ll love.
What does the phrase “no hidden costs or nasty surprises” really mean to you and your clients?
For us, it’s simple: what you see is what you get. Every Baygrove Designer Home comes with Turnkey pricing, so the price we give you is the price you can trust. We don’t advertise a low base price and then add on essentials later, everything is upfront.
Before clients make any commitment, we provide a detailed estimate that includes all our Turnkey inclusions, plus any extras they might want to add. We also carry out site inspections and make allowances for anything specific to the block that could affect the build.
Our goal is to make the building process as stress-free as possible. By being upfront and transparent, our Turnkey inclusions cover what families actually need, giving clients confidence and peace of mind from the very beginning. That way, they can focus on designing and enjoying their new home, without worrying about hidden costs or surprises along the way.

We wanted a home that truly reflects how families live, balancing style, function, and the relaxed coastal lifestyle. The design was inspired by the way families interact, creating a sense of openness and connection while still offering spaces for privacy and individual activities. Light-filled interiors, clever layouts, and a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor areas were all key considerations. The aim was to design a home that feels welcoming and comfortable, where everyday living is effortless, yet every space has purpose. We focused on creating zones that allow family members to come together, whether for socialising, relaxing, or entertaining, without sacrificing comfort or practicality.
Ultimately, the layout celebrates both togetherness and individuality, reflecting modern family life and the way people naturally use their homes, is relaxed, functional, and designed to enhance connection and lifestyle.

We requested the manufacture and install, by Oxley Nu-look Windows, of windows and doors into a repurposed rural building. The energy, expertise and professionalism of the team meant a job with various idiosyncrasies ran extremely smoothly.
From the initial measure to safe delivery - then installed into a non-standard quirky old building, with considerable creativity and cra smanship being applied to make the final fit completely seamless. The boys were cheerful and respectful on site. Great to have such an enjoyable experience!”

Can you tell us a little about your trade and the services you offer? CastleCrew Group is a local building and construction company that’s passionate about delivering high-quality building services for homes and businesses in Port Macquarie and the surrounds.
We do everything from custom homes, extensions, renovations, and detailed restaurant and shop fit-outs, to decking, wall removal, and stormwater management – no job is too big or small! We believe in building great customer service, so things like project and budget management, clear communication, and always looking out for our customers’ best interests are as important to us as the actual building work.
This comes from my early days as a carpenter, working alongside very talented people on
large luxury homes on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. Since then I became a fully qualified Master Builder with over 20 years experience in the industry.
We’re getting better with social media, so it’s probably best to check us out on Facebook and Instagram to see the work we’ve been doing –we’re always busy!
How important is trust when working with your clients, and how do you build it? For a customer, picking the best builder for your project is essential. For a builder, picking good people as clients is just as important. When you get both those right, trust comes naturally. I work with so many personalities that you quickly get a gut feel for people, what they want and how the project will operate best. Building projects need collective decisions, ongoing discussion and accountability - trust is the cement between those things. It begins
from the very start and then we build on that trust to have a successful project. If you’re not getting that, shop around until you find a builder you’re confident can do the job well and will listen to your views, otherwise things can go pear shaped.
I’m a real team player, I genuinely care about my customers and team. CastleCrew is known for great communication and showing up when we say we will. It sounds simple, but I think it’s my job to set a good example – I keep my word, and customers often tell me how honest I am.
My wife, Mel is the operations hub of the business, we’re both always available to our customers – they know they’re talking directly to the business owners and we’re a direct line to the bigger team. We can always explain things in a way they easily understand and deliver the project exactly as we said we would.
Tell us about your team. Who’s behind the business with you? CastleCrew isn’t just Mel and I - we’re a real team business. We’ve got a strong crew with two builders leading projects, four carpenters, and a second-year apprentice. These guys are seriously great to work with every day - honest, hardworking, great at what they do and always willing to push the envelope in taking on new ideas. Clients always rave about the team’s work and the way they behave on site - like respecting a customer’s personal space - Mel and I are really proud of the awesome culture we’ve built.
Mel’s super organised, she’s working behind the scenes with client communication, making sure the business runs operationally and financially, she’s the one who keeps everything tight!
ese guys are seriously great to work with every day - honest, hardworking, great at what they do and always willing to push the envelope in taking on new ideas.
How has your trade evolved over the years, and how are you keeping up with changes? I started out working for a builder when I was 17. He was a real mentor, teaching me about the industry, about business and I still put those skills to use every day. We’re only ever as good as our last job. For those of us who’ve stuck with it - with the grey hair to prove it! – it’s a really rewarding career. While products are always changing, the way things get done pretty much stays the same. Basically, if you put in the effort and preparation, things usually work out, a good
start leads to a good finish! The building industry is losing a lot of experienced tradies and builders. It’s getting tougher, more expensive, rising material costs, crazy insurance costs and growing labour expenses. Being a builder isn’t easy so we have to constantly rethink what we do and what will deliver the best result.
I’m constantly keeping up with the latest materials and building innovations and regulations - I talk to building professionals all over the country - and I make sure we treat people’s homes like our own. That’s been a real driver for referrals and repeat customers. Why should people choose your business? We take huge pride in our work and I pride my team on doing everything right first time.
I am a very seasoned builder and along with my team, we bring a huge range of skills and experience to turn a project from good into great!
So I would say: come meet us, ask a thousand questions and let us quote your project. I think you’ll quickly understand why clients choose CastleCrew as their choice in builder.

FROM ZEN-YA DESIGNS FOR LIFE focus
n our fast-paced world of constant notifications, noise, and busy schedules, the home has become our most vital sanctuary. By embracing a zenlike approach to decorating, you can transform your living space into a place of renewal, calm, and quiet focus. The key is using natural textures, soothing colour palettes, and thoughtful, design choices.
Begin
with Earth Tones
Colour is deeply tied to our emotional wellbeing. Earth tones, soft beiges, warm sand, clay, muted greens, and stone greys, form the foundation of a calming interior. Painting walls in a pale taupe or pebble grey creates a soothing backdrop, while accents in moss green or rich umber add depth without overwhelming the senses.
The principle here is restraint. Allow the subtle interplay of neutral shades to build a quiet harmony in your rooms. Just as in Japanese interiors, an earth-toned home feels timeless, tranquil, and restorative.
Layer Natural Textures
Choosing natural fibres and organic finishes creates an atmosphere that is tactile and inviting. Consider rustic linen soft furnishings, or handwoven throws draped over a low timber bench. Jute or wool rugs, with their earthy presence, ground a room beautifully resisting the overly polished look of synthetic.
YOUR CALM IS CALLING: HOW TO CREATE A ZENINSPIRED HOME FOR WELLNESS
Solid wood furniture, especially pieces crafted from sustainable sources, serve as a reminder of durability and connection to the earth. Grain variations and imperfections become part of the room’s character, echoing the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi: the beauty found in imperfection and authenticity. Pair these wood surfaces with ceramics, clay vessels, or stone bowls to deepen the tactile layering and emphasise a sense of grounding.
Select Meaningful Objects
A mindful approach to decorating involves choosing fewer, but more meaningful, objects. Curate your space with a handmade ceramic vase gifted by a friend, a seashell collected during a restorative holiday, or a framed black-and-white photograph that inspires calm reflection. Select artwork with gentle forms, minimalist brushstrokes, or natural motifs which can quietly influence mood, lowering anxiety and inviting contemplation. Think of a large ink painting of a muted landscape hung above a low timber console, or a serene abstract in soft layers, art that whispers, rather than shouts.
Practice
Mindful Arrangements
A zen-inspired space is not cluttered with furniture but instead makes room for stillness. The Japanese principle of ma, the balance between objects and the empty space around them, can guide your
decorating decisions. Leave breathing room between furniture pieces to allow flow. When arranging your rooms, ask yourself: does the placement of this item feel calm, necessary, and intentional?
Lighting
for Serenity
Natural light is essential in wellness design. Soften the transition between indoors and outdoors with sheer linen curtains or blinds that encourage a play of shadows and texture. In the evenings, replace harsh overhead lights with warm ambient lamps, shaded lighting, or candles.
Bring Nature Inside
Weaving in elements of nature is one of the most impactful ways to create greater calm. Potted indoor plants not only purify air but also reconnect us with the living world. A shallow stone water bowl on a table, or a small arrangement of seasonal greenery, introduces the Japanese principle of ikebana: finding beauty in the ephemeral gestures of nature.
Creating Your Sanctuary
Drawing inspiration from Japanese aesthetics of balance, simplicity, and harmony, your home can become the sanctuary where you return to yourself, shed the noise of the outside world, and reconnect with what feels essential.
JULIAN WILSON-O’GRADY
ON THE PLUMB AGAIN
Tell us about your background and what inspired you to start your business. I began my plumbing apprenticeship in 2011 and have been in the trade ever since. I was lucky to have a great boss who gave me the freedom to travel and always welcomed me back to work. When he moved to Queensland, it felt like the right time to start my own business and build something of my own.
What has been your most memorable local project? Recently, I worked at an art studio in Boambee. The clients held a special dinner to thank everyone involved, which made me feel really appreciated for the care I put into the job. That project definitely stands out. How important is trust when working with clients, and how do you build it? Trust is everything. For me, it comes down to the basics: turning up when you say you will, keeping clients informed, and leaving the site clean and tidy. These small things build strong, lasting relationships over time.
Tell us about your team. Who’s behind the business with you? It’s mostly just me, so if I don’t answer the phone, I’m usually on a job. My partner helps behind the scenes, and I also have my dog Boof. He actually found me on a job site in Toormina, he kept stealing my lunch until I tracked down his owner, who told me I could keep him!
What’s your favourite tool you can’t live without? My ½” and ¾” rollies - they’re the potato peelers of the toolbox.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? I love fishing, camping, hiking, and spending time with family and friends. I’m also into archery and a proud member of the Coffs Coast Archery Club in Woolgoolga. How can we get in touch? Give me a call 0423 985 292
