PUSHING POWER IN BISMARCK-MANDAN

appy March! This month, we’re tapping into the energy that powers our community—quite literally. We’re focusing on some of the many organizations, companies, and cooperatives that light up our lives and drive our economy forward, including Xcel Energy, Otter Tail Power Company, Cass County Electric Cooperative, ONEOK, Inc. and Friends of Ag & Energy.

It’s not just about keeping the lights on, these are some of the power players who push the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainability and community support. While some of these businesses were born and bred here in North Dakota, others are helping from afar, continuing to impact us every day.

This issue isn’t just about the energy sector, we're also celebrating all the movers and shakers who make BismarckMandan a great place to do business and a community poised for a bright future.

In addition to our focus on the energy sector, we have plenty more to showcase across the community. Lacey's Custom Jewelry, under the entrepreneurial spirit of Lacey Madsen, shares the journey of local business owners navigating challenges and triumphs. We're also highlighting the work of Ministry on The Margins, this month's 'Nonprofit of the Month.' And, as always, advice from the ND SBDC and VBOC of The Dakotas provides guidance and support that can go a long way in business.

Together, we’re not just witnessing the evolution of our local economy; we’re actively participating in it. So let’s keep the conversation going, support our local energy innovators, and continue to build a community that’s powered by more than just electricity.

Here’s to lighting up Bismarck-Mandan, one bright idea at a time. Let’s make this month an energizing one!

We Do That, Too!

Livewire's Journey of Bringing Events to Life for 25 Years

eaching a 25-year milestone for any company is quite a feat, yet Livewire's Kent Kolstad has made it look easy, continually leading the way in the live production industry. The founder and president attributes the company's standout success to its emphasis on consistency and client relationships. What started with an 11 year-old entrepreneur in Alexandria, MN, with a knack for audio systems and PA setups, quickly gained local recognition. "Word got around quick," Kolstad said, reflecting on his early ventures, ranging from installations to DJing at weddings and schools.

Today, with a team of 45 and growing, Livewire offers a unique approach to client engagement, deeply understanding and aligning with their clients' missions and messages, and taking on a "we do that, too!" approach to nearly every event opportunity that comes their way.

"Our team develops great relationships across our client base," Kolstad said. This personalized touch, he believes, significantly differentiates Livewire in the industry.

Livewire's strength lies not just in its event production capabilities, which cater to various event types, but also in its commitment to building enduring, insightful partnerships with its clients. "We offer consistency that other companies simply can't, whether it be in equipment or staffing," he said.

Tradeshow exhibits, for example, are another key area of expertise for Livewire. "We've built many tradeshow exhibits for different clients over the years, traveling to various parts of the country," Kolstad said.

Further diversifying its portfolio, Livewire has increased its output in custom

A Mission to Keep the World Engaged

"To create dynamic, meaningful, and engaging live event video production that betters our clients, team, and the world."

3 Things You May Not Know About Livewire

"We're a full-time team of 45 people."

"We're adaptable to almost any event request: if we haven't done it before, we will find a way to bring your vision to life."

"We are affordable! Many assume that our events cost an arm and a leg. Many of our clients find that we regularly come in well under their budget."

Meet Kent Kolstad

"Hi, I'm Kent! I'm the President here at Livewire. Livewire is so much more than just an event company; we're a fullservice audio, video, lighting, and staging scenery company. We provide turnkey event production for corporate events, nonprofit events, and community events, locally, regionally, and throughout the country."

scenery construction. "This isn't just about branded backdrops; it's about creating depth and connection to a brand," Kolstad said.

"Niche Events are our Niche"

Beyond tradeshows, Livewire's scope extends to corporate, nonprofit, and community events, providing comprehensive support in these sectors. Additionally, Livewire has made a big statement in live music support, running all of the production at The Lights in West Fargo in 2023 as well as their years of experience with mainstage acts at the Red River Valley Fair.

Another niche service Livewire brings to the table is heavy-duty convention power solutions. "Powering all those vendors can be quite tricky, and we have temporary power solutions that we utilize for live events that are a great fit for exactly that purpose," Kolstad said. This capability has been invaluable to events like Folkways' Red River Market.

"Niche" describes a lot about Livewire's client base. We're seeing a lot of events that are fairly niche-related," Kolstad said. From sustainable aviation fuel to bank automation and equipment finance, Livewire is becoming a go-to for those in unique, specialized fields.

We're magicians in the world of events."
- Brittney Hogan, Director of Business Development

This trend marks a departure from more generalized event content, indicating a growing demand for focused, in-depth explorations of specific topics.

By embracing these specialized events, Livewire continues to demonstrate its capacity to adapt and excel in an everchanging event production landscape.

Key Milestones

Some of the milestones and highlights that have shaped Livewire's journey are its notable achievements and strategic partnerships, positioning it as a key player both nationally and internationally. In recent years, Livewire began working with prominent companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google for virtual and hybrid events.

The company's success is deeply rooted in its origins here in Minnesota and North Dakota, which Kolstad credits for its unique position in the market. He also emphasizes the crucial role of networking in Livewire's growth, with significant support from the Fargo Moorhead community.

Creating a Lively Team Culture

A defining aspect of Livewire's success is its commitment to its staff, contrasting the industry norm of relying heavily on freelancers. "Our people make the difference: one could have all the best equipment in the world, but without the right people in the right seats, making connections between our technology, our creative, and our clients, it's worthless." This approach has resonated with clients, especially in the North Dakota market, where Livewire's reputation is well-established, as well as across its national client base.

Even clients notice how well Kolstad empowers his team, often noting how the Livewire team acts like owners of each event, making sure every detail is perfect.

orth Dakota may not have a coastline, but the beauty of its Badlands, prairies, and sunsets certainly inspires the state's tagline, 'Be Legendary.' Perhaps the most legendary man to ever grace these plains was Theodore Roosevelt, beloved for his appreciation and conservation of nature. Now, a Presidential Library is the next page in North Dakota’s story. As the architect of record, JLG is making it possible

alongside the international design architect and design landscape architect, Snøhetta; landscape architect of record, Confluence; and construction manager, JE Dunn. Sitting down with Patrick Thibaudeau, JLG's Principal Sustainability Officer, he sheds light on the groundbreaking significance of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL). According to Thibaudeau, TRPL is a once-in-a-century project with profound implications for local, national, and global carbon and climate policy. "It comes at a critical time, offering a chance to make a significant difference. This project is a demonstration of what it means to change business as usual for the next century in the most impactful way," he said.

The design team is pushing beyond boundaries by registering TRPL for the highest levels of certification in the Living Building Challenge, LEED, and SITES. Once certified, TRPL will be the first presidential library to achieve all three major sustainability guides at the highest level.

JLG's involvement perfectly illustrates its commitment to sustainable and innovative architectural design. TRPL, as Thibaudeau suggests, is not just a building but a beacon of change. “It's thrilling to continue a legacy that's over a century old, one that Roosevelt would have been proud to see carried forward,” he said.

Thibaudeau considers the project pivotal in defining the next era of conservation. "We're entering a new century of conservation focused on carbon and circularity of materials. It's an evolution of Roosevelt's conservation ideals, adapted to today's challenges in climate policy," he said.

TRPL is a monumental project for JLG and North Dakota. "It’s a landmark moment encapsulating a commitment to sustainability and innovation. We're not just building a library; we're building an idea that will leave an impactful legacy for the next century, echoing Roosevelt's visionary approach to conservation and policy," Thibaudeau said.

TRPL transcends conventional design. The team’s approach goes beyond simply erecting a building. "The Library is fundamentally emerging from the land," Thibaudeau said. "Design lead, Snohetta, often states the Library is the landscape. The site and the building are inseparably connected as one.”

Thibaudeau draws a parallel between the Library's design and Roosevelt's transformative Badlands experience. “Just like Roosevelt found healing in the land after personal tragedy, the Library’s main building rises from the land. It draws heating and

cooling energy from the land just as Roosevelt drew his personal strength from the land,” he said.

The goal is to create an immersive experience. "We want visitors to learn about Roosevelt's life and embed it within their own stories—to learn it and live it," Thibaudeau said. This approach makes the project one of profound emotional and environmental resonance, aligned with JLG's dedication to regenerative sustainable design.

JLG's current progress on TRPL, which is being built near the Medora Musical Amphitheater.
BISMANINC.COM 23

A major shift is happening in the building world right now, with several organizations and initiatives halting the consumption and depletion of resources. TRPL is not content with carbon neutral, the project instead aims for carbon positive.

"TRPL is a game-changer because it creates net positive outcomes in all areas—from enhancing the human experience to ensuring financial value, especially in terms of environmental impact like carbon, energy, water, and ecology," Thibaudeau said.

The project represents a significant leap in the design and construction industry, paving the way for more sustainable and responsible design practices. "We're setting a new benchmark for what buildings and sites can and should be in terms of their relationship with the environment and society," he said.

Sustainability extends to the construction site, which Thibaudeau described as tidy and well-ordered. "It’s inspiring to see the team fully embrace the project's ethos with an evident level of care even during early construction.”

Sustainability is a hot topic in architecture right now—yet for JLG, it's a core value. "The aim is to create a building that's better than having no building at all. We look at the building as a living, breathing entity," Thibaudeau said. "The Living Building Challenge is not just ticking off boxes on a checklist; it's pushing the boundaries of what's possible in sustainable design and doing something that has not been done before.”

"At the construction site, the progress is remarkable," Thibaudeau said. "One of the key initiatives is land management, conservation with prairie restoration and the native seed project. The team is working with NDSU to actively remove invasive species and regenerate the land for future conservation. We envision a thriving restored prairie site that inspires regional and national prairie restoration."

While a 'presidential library' conjures up images of aisles lined with books and historic archives, TRPL is much more than "a library." It is akin to a museum or an experience center. "TR's papers are already archived elsewhere. We're focusing on creating an immersive experience that reflects Roosevelt's life story," Thibaudeau said.

The Library will be an interactive journey, with experiences and exhibits leading from Roosevelt’s childhood to his presidency and beyond—inviting visitors to learn his story and then live out their own version of that story.

The Library's design leverages the stunning landscape of the Badlands. "The site itself is inspiring, with one of the high points in the region offering a 360-degree view," Thibaudeau said. "The roof becomes a destination, an extension of the landscape that magnifies a striking native view.”

This design aims to broaden visitors' emotional, mental, and psychological perspectives. "Our intent is to inspire visitors to take action in their personal lives, paralleling the expanded views at the site," Thibaudeau said.

SITES is a rating system that guides, evaluates, and certifies a project’s sustainability in the planning, design, construction, and management of landscapes and other outdoor spaces.

SITES supports landscape architects, planners, and others in implementing nature-based solutions. SITES projects enhance biodiversity and mitigate climate change while conserving resources, improving public health, and protecting critical ecosystems.

LEED for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) provides a framework for building a holistic green building, giving designers the chance to nail down every sustainability feature and maximize the benefits.

JLG created its own biophilic guide and adapted it for the project, calling it the 'TR 20', derived from existing principles to expand into more comprehensive and relatable paths. "We didn't just conduct a standard biophilic workshop; we redefined its principles," Thibaudeau said.

From day one, Thibaudeau says the project intends to be net carbon positive, and as the prairie restoration matures, it will become even more net positive within its own site. This extends to water usage, with the project aiming to use less water than naturally falls as rain on the site, thus contributing a water balance design to the local watershed.

TRPL also aims to minimize waste and avoid approximately 6,000 harmful chemicals in 90% of the installed products.

neutrality is not a passing trend but a significant economic transformation. "We're witnessing a worldwide economic shift, the likes of which we haven't seen for a century," he said.

He points out the economic potential of carbon sequestration, particularly for local farmers and ranchers. "Carbon can potentially become a future cash crop," he said.

"As organizations reduce their carbon footprint and waste, they become more efficient and profitable." He believes this shift aligns with the values of the upcoming generation of consumers and workers who prioritize sustainability, from purchasing to employment.

TRPL is more than just a building; it's a microcosm of the larger shift toward sustainability, signaling a prosperous future for North Dakota and beyond. The Library stands as a testament to Roosevelt's legacy and a beacon of economic and environmental transformation, inspiring a new generation of sustainable innovation.

Thibaudeau has been the national sustainability cochair for the AIA Large Firm Roundtable and a delegate to COP26 (United Nations Climate Change Conference). He emphasized that the movement towards carbon

ounded in 1906 as a regional natural gas pipeline operator in Oklahoma, ONEOK, Inc. has evolved into a region-leading energy company, specializing in the natural gas and natural gas liquids sectors. Today, ONEOK, Inc. stands proud as a FORTUNE 500 entity and a recognized member of the S&P 500. I was able to sit down with ONEOK, Inc. Director of Government Relations Danette Welsh to discuss the company's expansion to North Dakota, its commitment to a cleaner future, and more.

In North Dakota, ONEOK, Inc. operates a natural gas gathering system that feeds into ONEOK’s natural gas processing plants, a Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) pipeline system that provides critical NGL takeaway capacity for the region, along with the Viking Gas Transmission natural gas system that serves the eastern side of the state, including the Fargo area.

» Alternative Energy Solutions » Capital Ventures » Sustainability 28 MARCH 2024

"These operations are supported by more than 400 employees and their families who call North Dakota home and work to operate these assets in a safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible manner," Welsh said. "ONEOK’s long-term success is dependent on our ability to attract, develop, and retain a diverse group of talented employees. We are proud to partner with Bismarck State College whose educational programs help provide students with the skills needed to succeed in the industry."

ONEOK's presence in North Dakota dates back to the early 2000s, but within the last decade, there has been rapid growth within the company's midstream operations in the state. According to Welsh, this growth has resulted in an extensive natural gas gathering system, numerous natural gas processing plants, and critical natural gas liquids (NGL) pipelines to accommodate the state’s production growth.

"With the recent acquisition of Magellan Midstream, ONEOK is now one of the most diversified energy infrastructure companies in the U.S. and has expanded its critical infrastructure in the state of North Dakota with two refined product (gasoline and diesel) terminals," Welsh said.

In line with ONEOK's core values, Welsh states that the company is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint and implementing measures across its operations to effectively manage emissions. "Operating in an environmentally responsible manner is one of ONEOK’s core values. To manage emissions, we focus on operational efficiencies, investments in emissions-reducing process improvements, leveraging new technologies, and exploring lower-carbon business opportunities," Welsh said.

"This holds true in North Dakota, where ONEOK is gathering 1.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas." In North Dakota, this commitment has translated into a significant increase in the state's natural gas capture rate, surpassing 95% due to ONEOK's processing capacity.

Despite its successes, ONEOK is not without challenges, notably workforce availability. "Since 2010, the industry has grown at a rapid pace, but workforce availability has struggled to keep up," Welsh said. "We are actively working with education partners throughout the state and within area schools to promote the energy industry and develop our future workforce."

DID YOU KNOW?

Over the last five years, ONEOK has donated more than $4.3 million to North Dakota community partners, including the Bakken Area Skills Center, Great Plains Food Bank, and North Dakota’s Gateway to Science!

"ONEOK upholds its Core Value of Service by supporting the communities where we live and work. From picking up trash at local Pick Up the Patch events to handing out candy at trunk or treats, our employees volunteered more than 1,000 hours at local events in 2023."

With an eye on the future, ONEOK is exploring projects to enhance the regional supply of natural gas and propane as the state of North Dakota advances potential salt cavern storage development. Furthermore, ONEOK is currently participating in a feasibility study for the Roughrider Carbon Storage Hub, which is expected to store more than 50 million tons of CO2 over 30 years, according to Welsh.

"Our key business groups, alternative energy solutions, capital ventures, and sustainability, will also continue to identify potential low-carbon or emission-reducing projects, as well as investments that would complement our extensive midstream assets and expertise," Welsh said.

While ONEOK, Inc. has an eye looking ahead, they're also committed to providing essential services for customers and continuing to adapt to their needs as they evolve. "As we continue to grow our business and expand our operational footprint to meet the needs of stakeholders, so, too, does our commitment to strengthen our companywide sustainability program, practices, and performance," Welsh said.

new organization is making strides toward a more sustainable and integrated future for agriculture and energy in North Dakota. Friends of Ag & Energy, which launched in December of 2023, is a grassroots group that is dedicated to promoting neighborly conversations about North Dakota’s technologies that allow carbon sequestration and utilization to greatly enhance North Dakota's energy and agriculture industries. I was able to connect with Kathleen Neset, a geologist with a deep-rooted passion for the energy sector, who serves as the chairperson of Friends of Ag & Energy.

MEET KATHLEEN NESET

» Kathleen Neset, Owner and President of NESET, provides engineering and geologic expertise to the oil industry. She received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Brown University, is a certified Women’s Business Enterprise National Council professional, and is an owner of a Woman Owned Small Business.

» She recently completed a six-year term of service on the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and is the past chair of the North Dakota Petroleum Council and ND State Board of Higher Education.

» Kathleen was a participant in the U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar and continues to present a seminar on Energy and National Security each year.

» Kathleen was inducted into the North Dakota Petroleum Council Hall of Fame, received the Williston Basin API Chapter Lifetime Achievement Award, and received the Virtuous Leadership Award from the University of Mary, Bismarck, ND.

KATHLEEN NESET and Chairperson of Friends of Ag & Energy
30 MARCH 2024

With a vision to bridge the gap between the two, Neset and her team are working diligently to bring them together. Friends of Ag & Energy's operations revolve around the principle that the agricultural and energy sectors are integral to North Dakota's identity and prosperity. The organization believes in using unity and awareness to push both industries to new heights. By intertwining the goals and efforts of each sector, Friends of Ag & Energy aims to simultaneously uplift the agricultural community and introduce cleaner, more sustainable oil and gas production methods in North Dakota.

At the heart of Friends of Ag & Energy's objective is the desire to educate both the public and stakeholders about the realities and advancements within the oil, gas, and energy sectors across both North Dakota, as well as the neighboring regions. Neset and the rest of Friends of Ag & Energy advocate for dispelling myths and spreading factual information about the industry’s developments, especially in the realms of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

"My biggest goal is education. It's all about getting the facts out there about what working in the oil and gas industry truly is," Neset said. "What is happening in the world of carbon capture sequestration and utilization? Where are we going with enhanced oil recovery? What makes a barrel of oil cleaner and more valuable? We're adding value to oil by engaging in both carbon capture utilization and storage. If we take different components of each industry and put them together, they can help strengthen one another."

Furthermore, Neset added that North Dakota's geological framework in western North Dakota provides plenty of storage to be utilized when sequestering carbon and increasing value, all while the agriculture industry is being enhanced. "It's truly a win-win for everyone," Neset said.

Both who we are and our mission are right in the name. North Dakotans

have

to recognize that we're stronger together to take both the agriculture and energy industries to the next level."

CONTINUED

We welcome questions and comments on our website at AgEnergyFriends.com. We’ve had hundreds of questions submitted, and we answer every one of them on the website."

She highlights the unique geological framework of western North Dakota as a pivotal advantage for the mission, referring to it as what's known as a "geologic jackpot" that offers a plethora of different formations that provide varying geologic opportunities, which assist in the sequestration of carbon and enhancement of the state's oil value and gas outputs.

"There are multiple facets to it that are so valuable, and it's been very well managed by Lynn Helms, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), and the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC), Neset said. "North Dakota not only has multiple layers of oil-bearing zones; it also has 19 different formations that have proven oil and gas bearing over the last 70-some years of production in North Dakota. The state also has rare earth elements present, coal production at the surface, as well as other formations that readily accept carbon dioxide in a liquid form underground, amongst other unique features."

Neset stresses the importance of community engagement and open dialogue in overcoming challenges and advancing our energy and agriculture sectors together. Friends of Ag & Energy aims to provide a platform for honest discussions, enabling residents to make informed decisions about the future energy landscape. "North Dakota's population has always been very wise and energy-savvy," Neset said.

"We've been longtime participants in oil, gas, coal, wind, and solar for a while across North Dakota, but we have to continue forward together as a new frontier of carbon management comes to us. I tell people to make their own decisions; we just want the facts out there so that residents can make wise choices going forward. Our biggest challenge is getting communities together and having a platform for people to ask questions and get the truth out there. We want everyone to learn more about it together and make sure that we're all working with facts over falsehoods."

We're meeting with landowners all around the state, and we encourage anyone with questions, supporters, opponents, and folks just trying to discern the facts to join us at these events. We believe in addition, rather than subtraction. Simple math and more conversations lead to a better understanding of the choices we face. Beginning in March, we will be doing multiple public town hall meetings that are open to the public."

GREENER OIL: CO2 ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY

As global energy demands continue to increase, energy producers aim to produce more and "greener" oil— that is, oil with a reduced carbon footprint—through a process called CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

STAGES OF OIL PRODUCTION

» Primary Recovery: The natural pressure of the reservoir pushes some of the oil to producing wells where pumps bring the oil to the surface.

» Secondary Recovery (Water Flooding): Water injected into the reservoir increases pressure and pushes more oil into producing wells.

» Tertiary Recovery (CO2 EOR): Injected CO2 mixes with oil and causes more of the oil to flow to the producing well.

32 MARCH 2024

Come to our events. We're planning another series of events where we'll host open forums with people who agree and disagree from all sides of this issue and have a neighborly North Dakota conversation about them. You can agree or disagree with us, but we do have an opportunity to sign a petition that's online right now at AgEnergyFriends.com."

Friends of Ag & Energy aims to not only enhance the state’s energy and agricultural outputs but also to ensure a sustainable future for all North Dakotans.

"I'm a firm believer that you must keep reinventing yourself, and we as a state must do the same thing," Neset said. "Over the years, I think North Dakota has done very well with managing and promoting our natural resources, and I believe that Friends of Ag & Energy can continue exploring these operations."

By leveraging North Dakota's unique geological assets and promoting a unique relationship between the agriculture and energy sectors, Friends of Ag & Energy is poised to contribute significantly to the state's sustainable development.

OF AG & ENERGY'S CORE BELIEFS

» Pipelines are Safe: Pipelines are safe. We have over 30,000 miles of underground pipeline in North Dakota operating seamlessly every day. We have two CO2 pipelines in North Dakota that have operated safely and without incident for years.

» Man-Made Carbon Provides Major Benefits: The management of a small percentage of man-made carbon will provide enormous benefits to North Dakota's ag ethanol, oil and gas, and coal industries. Ultimately, the taxpayers of North Dakota will be the largest beneficiary. Our ag and energy sectors require huge capital investments. Thankfully, North Dakota has the geology that allows captured CO2 to be safely and permanently stored in rock layers about a mile deep. This technology has been proven during more than 40 years of field operations associated with oil production in Texas, 20 years in Saskatchewan, and 10 years in Minot. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) at the University of North Dakota has been a worldleading pioneer in testing this technology.

» Importance of Private Property Rights: Private property rights are among our most important rights as citizens. It is gratifying to hear that 80% of landowners have heard robust debate about this project and have opted to allow their land to be utilized for the construction of this project. We respect the 20% who have not yet agreed to participate. We look forward to an opportunity to hear their concerns and offer solutions for their objections.

» Respectful Debate: Our country was founded on robust and respectful debate, and we support that notion when it comes to issues that benefit North Dakota and continue our Ag & Energy industries' prominence.

CASS COUNTY ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE

ince its formation in 1937, Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC) has been at the forefront of providing electricity to southeast North Dakota. I had the opportunity to talk with Paul Matthys, vice president of CCEC's Member and Energy Services for CCEC. We discussed CCEC's rich history, current initiatives including community engagement, and future outlook. From its first account in 1938 to the 58,000 accounts the cooperative serves today, they have stayed true to its commitment to the communities it serves.

THE SPARK OF BEGINNINGS

Shortly after energizing its first account, CCEC signed purchase power requirements with their wholesale power provider, Minnkota Power Cooperative, to purchase electricity from them to provide to their members. Since then, CCEC has been a critical part of providing electricity to rural members of southeast North Dakota, including a large portion of Fargo and West Fargo residential and commercial businesses' electricity. While the cooperative has made a significant impact in our state since launching, its mission extends beyond providing electricity.

WHO IS CCEC'S POWER SUPPLIER?

"Minnkota Power Cooperative is a nonprofit electric generation and transmission cooperative headquartered in Grand Forks, ND. Formed in 1940, Minnkota provides wholesale electric energy to 11 member-owner distribution cooperatives located in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota."

- Cass County Electric Cooperative Website

By partnering with local economic development groups, including Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC) and the West Fargo Economic Development Advisory Committee, CCEC has become a key player in the region's economic landscape. "We're involved in rural communities' economic development groups and we're big supporters of our local chambers in the communities that we serve," Matthys said. "We're big into giving back to our communities through food pantries, charitable donations, and more. We aim to provide the time, talent, and resources to our community supporters to help our communities thrive and prosper."

Employee retention is another area where CCEC excels.

"Being a contributing part of promoting and attracting the workforce has been an important role for us," Matthys said. "We've worked with the FMWF Chamber on doing some interviews and stories about what there is to do in North Dakota's communities, whether it be the lakes area, fishing, hunting, the arts available, and so much else in North Dakota. We're helping them promote those qualities to attract a workforce from outside of the area." Furthermore, CCEC also works with local universities to help retain students who are graduating soon to continue working in our communities and raise their families here.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Navigating the challenges of workforce and talent acquisition has been a significant focus for CCEC, which is working closely with the FMWF Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations. "We're a big part of supporting those organizations and providing resources to help attract talent while also promoting business retention," Matthys said.

"We focus a lot on attracting new businesses to the area as well. Furthermore, we've also worked with the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC) on the Business Retention & Expansion (BRE) program, which was created to help promote, attract, and retain the businesses that we have in the area."

"I started with Cass County Electric Cooperative 23 years ago as an electrician. Culturewise, Cass County Electric is a great company to work for. We provide electricity to rural homes, farms, and businesses in urban areas, with the cooperative culture of a nonprofit business. We're owned and governed by the members that we serve. It's been a great opportunity and a great place to have a career."

CCEC is community-oriented! The cooperative has supported breast cancer awareness, local Girl Scouts, community art nights, and more!

BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD

Looking to the future, Matthys is optimistic for not only the growth of CCEC but also the future of the industry with proper support. "Our future is bright. We have great employees and we're in a time of economic prosperity and growth," Matthys said. CCEC's role in supporting new businesses and contributing to a business-friendly environment has been helpful to other organizations also looking to uplift North Dakota.

The CCEC credits local chambers for promoting a business-healthy environment to impact the entire state. "From Governor Doug Burgum promoting business in North Dakota to local governments making a difference, we're in an excellent spot for future growth and prosperity here in North Dakota," Matthys said.

Cass County Electric Cooperative's journey from its early days to its current role as a key player in contributing to the state's growth and prosperity is a story of dedication. Since 1937, CCEC has remained committed to its mission of serving its members and contributing to the region's economic strength. With a bright future ahead, CCEC continues to demonstrate the power of cooperation and community-focused energy solutions.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

The cooperative's business model, focused on serving rather than appeasing investors, stands as a model of CCEC's mission at hand. CCEC is governed by an elected board of directors, all of whom are members they serve. Any excess margins at the end of the year are then allocated by the board of directors back to members served in the form of "capital credits," where they get a check back for being a member and supporting the cooperative.

"We

don't have investors to appease; we're focused on our members. Everything that we do every day with our operations is for our members."

XCEL ENERGY

We're very committed to our customers. Xcel Energy has been in business for 116 years. Our teams are very focused on making sure the lights come on in the morning through reliability. We have some of the highest percentages of reliability in the nation, all while affordably delivering power to our customers and the changing world."

ince its establishment over a century ago in 1909, Xcel Energy has been proud to deliver reliable and sustainable energy to more than 250,000 homes each year. North Dakota is home to three Xcel Energy wind facilities that are providing clean energy to North Dakotans and pushing the industry to a greater standard. I had the pleasure of connecting with Tony Grindberg, principle manager of Xcel Energy, where we discussed Grindberg's role in the company, Xcel Energy's strides towards carbon-free electricity, and how they play a part in keeping our lights on.

MEET TONY GRINDBERG, PRINCIPAL MANAGER OF XCEL ENERGY

Tony Grindberg is a seasoned professional with a background in economic development and legislative leadership, boasting over 20 years of experience in economic growth.

Hailing from Mapleton, ND, Tony embarked on a pivotal role as the inaugural director of the NDSU Research and Technology Park, initiated in 2001, in the early stages of his career. Tony also played a key role within the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC).

Beyond his contributions to economic development, Grindberg also served in the state Senate, dedicating 22 years to legislative service. Throughout his time, he was deeply involved in crafting growth strategies and advocating for pro-business policies. Notably, Tony was a leading figure in the effort to establish the North Dakota Department of Commerce during the 2001 legislative session.

Grindberg's time devoted to making a positive impact on North Dakota doesn't come without personal inspiration.

"When I graduated from college, most of my friends left the region due to a lack of opportunities available at the time. This situation served as a significant motivator for me to engage in politics and run for the legislature," Grindberg said.

"My goal was to transform North Dakota into a place where people are eager to move, stay, and grow their businesses. About three-and-a-half years ago, I was approached by someone from Xcel Energy who invited me to lunch. During our meeting, we had a meaningful discussion about the principle manager role at Xcel Energy in North Dakota, which involved addressing government affairs issues and policies related to energy companies and utilities. Intrigued, I applied for the position and have enjoyed an exciting journey ever since. Now, with an eight-state footprint, witnessing the growth of Xcel Energy has been a remarkable experience."

XCEL ENERGY'S GROWTH

The evolution of Xcel Energy mirrors the transformative changes within the energy sector, especially in how power is generated and distributed. As Grindberg said, "Change is one aspect that's been unique to watch," on the company's shift towards minimizing its environmental footprint. Xcel Energy's bold declaration to provide carbon-free electricity by 2050 set a precedent across the United States and further pushed its mission to adopt cleaner energy solutions in North Dakota and beyond.

"Many energy companies have vocally moved towards a cleaner approach to generating electricity over the last five or six years, as both the markets and customers are expecting us to do so," Grindberg said. "With North Dakota being an energy state, and [Xcel Energy] being the largest utility in North Dakota, we're at an intersection of a lot of different angles, including policy regulation, taxation, capital investment of transmission, distribution, and at the end of the day, reliable and affordable energy for our customers."

PEOPLE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT ENERGY

"Recently, the North Dakota News Cooperative released a study that gauged the public's interest in North Dakota on climate change, electric vehicles, and affordability and reliability. The survey's results showed that people care about their power being affordable first and foremost, while also wanting to promote a clean environment if possible. At the end of the day, we do what we do for our customers."

XCEL'S EVERCHANGING FUTURE IN ENERGY

Looking towards the future, both Xcel Energy and Grindberg appear to remain focused on adapting to the evolving demands and expectations of their customers. Grindberg's insights show the importance of innovation while helping steer the company through the changing landscape of the energy sector. "Energy is something that everyone expects as a fundamental part of our livelihood. The way Xcel Energy generated power 116 years ago is markedly different from how we generate power today," Grindberg said.

"Our approach to doing business has significantly evolved from how things were done in the 1920s, as is the case with any business. It's likely that the way we operate today will not be the same 50 years from now. Adapting and adjusting to the demands and expectations of our customers is essential. In a changing world, it's important to remain focused on the right direction, and we are proud to have consistently delivered in this way," he said.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS UPCOMING IN THE INDUSTRY?

"What I believe, over time, is we'll see more advanced nuclear energy production across the country. Our nuclear plants in Monticello, MN are large nuclear plants that generate 60 megawatts of power. Advanced nuclear reactors are sometimes modular, stackable, and mobile, and generate 75 megawatts. That technology is going to proliferate over time as regulation and approval processes happen."

Xcel Energy's impact in North Dakota extends far beyond the electricity that powers homes and businesses.

"When you walk into a room and flip a light switch, a lot of things are unfolding behind the scenes to make that moment happen," Grindberg said. "From the operational side of transmitting electricity to distributing it to your home or business, as well as liaising with regulators to keep rates affordable, navigating state and national policies, and leveraging tax credits. There's a whole lot happening before the meter to make it all come together, and we look forward to making that happen every day."

OTTER TAIL POWER COMPANY

I've been in four different companies including working in economic development, sales, and as a CPA by trade. I've been with Otter Tail Power Company for around 20 years now and have been involved in a couple of different areas of the company. Doing business in North Dakota is fantastic, and I'm happy to serve the community and help keep the lights on."

or over a century, Otter Tail Power Company has been a region leader in providing energy solutions that not only light up homes and businesses but also in empowering the communities that they serve. I had the pleasure of connecting with Otter Tail Power Company Vice President of Customer Service Steve Schoeneck. In this feature, we delve into the company's impact on North Dakota for over a century, what new benefits and improvements are underway for customers, and how they're keeping the lights on at an affordable rate for everyone.

OTTER TAIL POWER COMPANY'S ENERGY GENERATION

"Our generation mix includes coal-fired plants, wind power, combustion turbines, solar power, and hydroelectric plants. We also purchase electricity from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) energy market when buying it is more economical than generating it ourselves. This mix ensures reliable, lowcost, and increasingly clean electricity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

-

44 MARCH 2024

Otter Tail Power Company's history began in 1907. "We've been in North Dakota since the inception, really. We've only expanded from there," Schoeneck said. From its early days in Wahpeton, ND, and Fergus Falls, MN, Otter Tail Power has grown alongside the communities it serves, evolving into a rural company that's as much a part of the landscape as the towns it energizes.

Otter Tail Power Company is structured around three business units, each directly serving the retail sector. Their field construction crews are dedicated to maintaining essential services, ensuring that the lights stay on for customers through construction and restoration efforts, aside from restoring power if necessary. In addition to the critical operational teams, the company operates call centers to provide responsive customer service and support. Furthermore, their sales and economic development team works to drive growth and sustain market presence.

With said emphasis on the retail aspect of utilities, Otter Tail Power focuses on the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, ensuring that every aspect of energy provision is handled with care and efficiency from multiple perspectives. "Customers' utilities are broken down into three pieces," Schoeneck said. "There's the 'generation piece' (Do you make electrons?), the 'transmission piece' (Do you ship them over a geographic space?), and then the 'distribution piece' (Getting them to customers)."

OTTER TAIL POWER'S COMMUNITY VALUES

"Our tradition of giving to and caring for the communities we serve is at the core of who we are. In 2018, we established the Otter Tail Power Company Foundation with the mission to support young minds, invest in our current and future workforce, create vibrant culture and vital communities, improve health and human services, and protect our natural resources. We expect and are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion as part of who we are, what we value, and how we achieve individual, business, and community success. In 2024, we'll continue to focus our resources on initiatives that align with our priority giving areas, targeting our donations where it’s needed most, including:"

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES 24/7

The impact of Otter Tail Power in North Dakota may not be seen every day by its residents, but it's crucial to our community. Needless to say, Otter Tail Power has made itself a source of positive change in the region, yet they're also boosting our state's economy in more ways than one. "From an operational perspective, we manufacture most of our electronics right here," Schoeneck said. "For instance, we have a plant in North Dakota that we're a part owner in and operate. Somebody actually makes all the electrons right here and they're transmitted over lines and distributed to substations and stepped down to go to folks' homes and businesses."

This dedication ensures that North Dakotans have access to reliable energy, come rain or shine. "People can take it for granted when they flip a light switch on, but there are people out there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week doing what it takes to keep it going," Schoeneck said. "The folks working on the generators are doing an essential job. We have people out in the field daily, taking steps to maintain the system and keep it running smoothly and swapping out equipment as needed. While our goal is to keep costs low, we're continually engaged in activities to ensure everything runs efficiently."

Beyond keeping the lights on, Otter Tail Power plays a pivotal role in the economic development of the region. By maintaining a flexible rate structure and investing in local communities, the company helps ensure that both residents and businesses in rural towns can continue affordably. "Making sure that the electrical component of their business is not an inhibitor on someone's budget is something we're very conscious of," Schoeneck said.

"We're one of the smallest investorowned utilities in the country, but we compete at a scale that benefits our customers. Our people are involved in our communities, and we think that's very important. We're able to be very effective and truly understand our customers because we're a part of those communities."
- Steve Schoeneck, Vice President of Customer Service

A BRIEF TIMELINE OF OTTER TAIL POWER COMPANY'S HISTORY

1871

George Wright, considered the founder of Fergus Falls, built Central Dam along the Otter Tail River in this small Minnesota town.

1907

Wright and three other investors incorporated Otter Tail Power Company and began building Dayton Hollow Dam at a cost of $100,000.

1914

Otter Tail Power Company began operating the Hoot Lake hydroelectric plant, which the company had built northeast of Fergus Falls, on the Otter Tail River.

1936

Congress passes the Rural Electrification Act, and Otter Tail Power Company begins providing wholesale power to area cooperatives the following year.

46 MARCH 2024

OTTER TAIL'S INNOVATION AMONGST OBSTACLES

Otter Tail Power's vision for the future is as bright as the communities it serves. With plans to repower wind farms and introduce Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), the company is set on enhancing efficiency and reliability. "We're very long-term thinkers, planning 25 years out all the time," Schoeneck said. "Especially one to five years ahead, as we're regulated to have integrated resource plans available. Our goal is to make sure that things are in place for folks to reliably get their energy."

Currently, the company is oriented on repowering their five wind farms in the northeast part of the state, where most of their generation comes from. "Everything in the top part of those towers will be upgraded over the next year and a half," Schoeneck said. "This enhancement will result in increased capacity, which in turn, helps maintain low costs and ensures reliability. By efficiency alone, it's almost like adding a 40-megawatt power plant."

The AMI project, set to vastly improve their operation's meter reading in North Dakota, showcases Otter Tail Power's forward-thinking approach. "Currently, our meters in North Dakota are manual. Rather than having someone go out and write down the information, we're changing those out to automatically get reads and be more effective in the costs of our business," Schoeneck said.

This not only streamlines operations but also translates into more savings for customers over time. The project is underway with meters being installed in South Dakota, as they work their way north to North Dakota around June of 2024.

Lastly, Otter Tail Power Company is also going through what's known as a "bill redesign." According to Schoeneck, many aspects show up on a customer's bill due to regulations for full transparency, but that can quickly become convoluted and complex to many customers. They're currently in the process of cleaning the bill up to make it more intuitive to the customer, with hopes to launch the new format in the summer of 2024, allowing customers to be able to understand their bill more easily.

Despite its successes, Otter Tail Power is no stranger to challenges. Serving predominantly rural communities presents unique obstacles, from ensuring robust economic development to maintaining competitiveness for small towns. "We cover a few states and they're all good, but North Dakota is excellent. They're open for business. However, we serve primarily rural and fairly flat communities, which makes it pretty hard to build robust communities to grow," Schoeneck said.

"In North Dakota, we serve several hundred towns, most of which are small, with an average population of about 500 people. This means that each town has a limited area it serves, presenting a challenge: making sure that businesses in these smaller towns can compete on a global scale." Despite these challenges, Schoeneck is proud that Otter Tail Power Company's flexible rate structures have enabled it to navigate through dark times effectively.

1953

The transition from being a self-contained provider to being part of an integrated network of power suppliers is complete. The City of Fergus Falls agreed to sell its municipal system to Otter Tail Power Company which, in turn, agreed to build its new General Office there, to be occupied in 1955.

1989

To boost flat utility revenues, Otter Tail Power Company formed MidStates Development (later named Varistar) to acquire and oversee nonutility businesses.

2002

The company purchases the 900-kilowatt output of a wind generator along the Buffalo Ridge near Hendricks, MN.

2014

Through an extensive campaign, customers are encouraged to enroll in the company's electronic billing and payment program to reduce costs associated with producing and mailing paper statements.

Bismarck's

Lacey Madsen started her business adventure with just her knowledge and a whole lot of enthusiasm. Wasting no time and setting up shop in her own basement, Lacey took on every task herself, from reaching out to people at events to having conversations with anyone who would listen. Lacey even attended vendor shows to make connections and introduce her craft— creating unique custom jewelry.

She built her business without having customers come to her place; instead, she went to coffee shops, visited their homes, or wherever was convenient for them. Sometimes she showcased her jewelry at rummage sales and other events to get noticed. It all started there, and she kept building from that point forward.

Lacey's path to success was a winding one. Coming from a background in the construction industry, she initially went into the trades after realizing that college wasn't the route that piqued her interest the most. However, her love for jewelry and gemstones sparked a new passion.

“When I got a job at the mall, I found a love for gemstones, how they grow and how they become the product they are today, and found that I have a very mechanically-focused brain. I worked at a jewelry store downtown for over 10 years, leading to nearly 20 years of jewelry store experience,” Lacey said.

She yearned for something more, a place where she could create unique, custom pieces while providing unparalleled customer service. With honesty and a vision, Lacey set out to establish her own jewelry store, focusing on personalized designs and a smaller, more intimate scale.

BISMANINC.COM 51

“We worked through the 2008 recession and worked so hard to make it through on the other side successfully. I loved that job, but I wanted something more out of it. I’m a very honest person, so I went directly to my boss and told them my goals. I wanted to open a small store that focuses on unique, custom pieces that people aren’t seeing every day, as well as more customeroriented service at a smaller scale,” Lacey said.

What started as a humble venture in Lacey's basement has blossomed into a thriving business that caters to individuals seeking one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. As she honed her skills and experimented with different techniques, she discovered her unique ability to translate her clients' desires into tangible, wearable art.

Starting from her basement, Lacey spared no effort in spreading the word about her custom jewelry business. Lacey struck up conversations with people at events and introduced herself at vendor shows to put her name out there. By showcasing her creations at rummage sales and other gatherings, she ensured that her work caught the attention it

deserved. Lacey's tireless dedication and entrepreneurial spirit formed the foundation upon which Lacey's Custom Jewelry would flourish.

Even when only one or two people are in the store, Lacey and her team are constantly assisting customers with their jewlery needs. Whether it's crafting custom designers for customers, providing advice on repairs, or helping customers repurpose their existing pieces, Lacey and her team are consistently conducting these processes in-house.

What sets Lacey's Custom Jewlery apart is the personalized touch that she infuses into every piece created. Whether it's a custom engagement ring, a sentimental pendant, or a statement bracelet, the team is invested in capturing the client's vision.

52 MARCH 2024
Check out some of the many notable pieces of work from Lacey’s Custom Jewelry.

Lacey's Custom Jewelry distinguishes itself from other jewelry businesses in town in multiple ways. One significant aspect is the store's commitment to education. With a team that includes three graduate gemologists, Lacey's Custom Jewelry ensures that customers receive the highest level of expertise and knowledge.

“That’s one of the things that we love to pat ourselves on the back for. We love to collaborate and work with other gemologists in the jewelry industry outside of my business," Lacey said. "However, there are fewer and fewer in this town that we’re not already working with, considering that we already have the majority of them on our staff. It’s great to know that we have the education to feel confident in the numbers and products. The difference between glass and cubic zirconia can be reflected in the value.

While the customer may not know the difference between an item that’s $10 or $10,000, we can tell the difference and we make sure that the customer is getting the best deal possible."

This proficiency allows the store to confidently showcase its products, provide accurate assessments, and guide customers toward the best choices. Moreover, the store's exceptional customer service has become its hallmark, going above and beyond to meet and exceed clients' expectations.

“We can also credit our terrific customer service as another reason why Lacey’s Custom Jewelry has been so successful. I hear that over and over again because we go above and beyond for our customers, which I have to credit to the same great staff that’s been supporting this business since we began. I'm incredibly honest with my customers and my staff, which is how any working relationship should feel and be,” Lacey said.

Presenting Quality First

Determining the price of a piece of jewelry is no easy task. Designing and pricing custom jewelry is a meticulous process that demands a delicate balance of artistry and economics.

Each custom piece requires careful consideration of various factors, such as the type and quality of gemstones, the intricacy of the design, and the craftsmanship involved. Many of Lacey's designs involve repurposing existing jewelry or incorporating sentimental elements, which adds a layer of complexity to the pricing process. Lacey takes into account the cost of materials, labor, design intricacy, and the sentimental value associated with the piece. Each custom creation is carefully evaluated to ensure that the final price reflects its true worth while remaining fair and transparent to the customer.

“The majority of custom designs come from people reusing what they already have, which is a major part of our industry. I’ve heard of people that spend $1,000 on a custom piece. However, at the end of the day, you still get to dictate your own price that you want to sell it for. The majority of that cost comes from labor, design casting, polishing, and setting stones. How many stones do you want to be set? How difficult is the design going to be? We will always take you through that and walk you through those steps. You may have spent $1,000 on a piece, but design casting and polishing can increase the piece's value significantly. I love figuring out the best way to utilize a customer's money and get them the best custom product possible," Lacey said.

Like any business, Lacey's Custom Jewelry has faced its share of challenges along the way. One notable hurdle has been competition from larger jewelry chains and online retailers. However, Lacey believes that her personalized approach and emphasis on quality and expertise set her apart from these mass-market options. She understands the importance of continuously adapting to changing customer preferences and market trends while staying true to her brand identity.

On the other hand, Lacey's triumphs have been numerous. With each satisfied customer and positive testimonial, her reputation as a trusted jeweler grows. Word-of-mouth referrals and a strong presence on social media platforms have played a significant role in expanding her customer base. Lacey also takes great pride in the success stories of her clients, who often return to her for their future jewelry needs and refer their friends and family. The support and loyalty of her customers serve as a constant reminder of why she started Lacey’s Custom Jewelry in the first place.

“I'm a very honest person that will tell you how it is. People are oftentimes assuming that you're going to steal, cheat, or do something wrong to their pieces. Jewelry is an incredibly sentimental product and our staff respects that it can’t just be fixed like most other products,” Lacey said.

54 MARCH 2024

Looking ahead, Lacey envisions a future filled with growth and exciting opportunities. She aims to continue building her brand, expanding her team of experts, and exploring new avenues to reach customers beyond Bismarck. Lacey also plans to collaborate with local artists and artisans to offer unique jewelry pieces that incorporate different artistic mediums. With her passion for custom jewelry and dedication to exceptional service, Lacey's Custom Jewelry is poised to become a gem that shines even brighter in the jewelry industry.

“I’m lucky enough to have a supportive staff, but also grateful that I’ve never been able to say that we’re fully staffed. I’ve always felt that if the right person came forward, we couldn’t turn them away. Training someone in this industry can take anywhere from one to three years, and I’m still learning new things every single day in this business. It’s about finding the right person with a problem-solving mindset and mentality that’s motivated to fix things,” Lacey said.

Almost all of my staff has been with me since the beginning, with the exception of a few staff members that have trickled in as I’ve grown. Since starting nearly a whole decade ago, we’ve slowly added more staff to our team and we’ve grown into a business that I’m truly proud of and impressed with.

When you're looking for a job, it's not necessarily about how much money you make. Always look at the benefits that an employer will offer; both on and off the formal job offer. Here, family is number one to us. If something happens with a family member where an employee needs some time away, we will make anything work. I’ll work extra hours for my staff so that they can be with their family, but I’ve also found a staff that would do the same for me, which is great.

BISMANINC.COM 55

I've taken them on trading trade show trips with me, and love bringing them coffee and treats. I've never considered myself the boss, even though I know I'm the boss. I remember what it was like to be an employee that’s been pushed to the limit, just as most have been before. Knowing that can happen, I always try to let them know how much I appreciate them and the work that they put in every day.

A: We've done many different things over the years both for and with the Bismarck-Mandan community. Around the holidays, we spark some healthy competition by donating to local charities based on which charities people comment to donate on our social media platforms. We also work with a lot of womenempowered charities and organizations, such as Go Red For Women. It’s great to see women entrepreneurs support other women entrepreneurs. I have kids at home and have had two children since opening the store alone, so we also try to work with other sporting organizations and youth activities to support the community.

As a business owner, you’re always trying to cram as many minutes in a day as possible back into the business. I’m grateful for my staff that’s always there for each other. We value each other’s time and if someone has to be with their family, then we pivot and move our schedules as needed so that they can be with their family when needed.

A: Don't second guess and doubt yourself as much as most people do. For the entire first year of business, I had convinced myself that we weren’t going to make it and would close before our anniversary. It’s important to never assume anything and keep pushing when your head is high.

A: That balance is something that is always getting figured out, and nobody has that balance completely figured out. When my daughter goes to college for her first year, my youngest goes to their first year of kindergarten, so we have a wide age range in the house. I do try to shut off the outside world when I’m with my family. When I’m at work, I’m at work. When I’m at home, I’m at home.

arketing is the lifeline that connects businesses to consumers. Today, the approach to marketing has shifted dramatically, as has the associated cost. While big names might have the budget to pour into expansive campaigns, for many small to mediumsized businesses, marketing on a shoestring budget is the stark reality. However, with innovative strategies like content marketing, businesses can still make a considerable impact without breaking the bank.

Content marketing is a multifaceted strategy, much more than just a means to an end. It's about forming a connection with your audience, providing them with something of value, and establishing your brand not just as a seller, but as a source of information, inspiration, or entertainment. Let's delve deeper into what makes content marketing so essential in the current business landscape:

In the heart of effective content marketing lies the art of storytelling. It's about weaving your brand's values, mission, and personality into every piece of content. This narrative helps your audience connect with your brand on a more personal level. For instance, when you share stories of how your product is made, the people behind it, or how it impacts the community, you're not just selling a product; you're inviting your audience into a narrative where they play a crucial role.

One of the primary goals of content marketing is to educate your audience. This could be about industry trends, how to use your products more effectively, or even general life tips that align with your brand values. By educating your audience, you position your brand as a knowledgeable and trustworthy source, which can be a powerful tool in building long-term customer relationships.

58 MARCH 2024

In today's digital age, your online visibility is crucial. Content marketing boosts your SEO efforts. By creating high-quality, relevant content, you're more likely to rank higher in search engine results, making it easier for potential customers to find you.

Beyond attracting and retaining customers, content marketing can help in building a community around your brand. This community becomes a space where customers can interact not only with you but also with each other, sharing experiences, ideas, and feedback. This kind of engagement fosters loyalty and can turn customers into brand advocates.

Content marketing is not a one-way street. It allows for interaction and feedback from your audience, which can be incredibly valuable. You can gauge reactions to your content, understand customer needs better, and adapt both your content and your products or services accordingly.

The term "Content Marketing" was used as early as 1996 at a journalism conference on the future of print.

Businesses with blogs get 67% more leads than those without, according to a recent AgentDrive study.

According to DemandMetric, 70% of consumers prefer getting to know a company via articles rather than ads.

LEGO's YouTube channel, a form of content marketing, has more viewers than many large global media channels.

Content marketing doesn't exist in isolation. It's a part of your overall marketing strategy, complementing and enhancing other efforts like social media marketing, email marketing, and paid advertising. For example, the content you create for your blog can be repurposed for an email newsletter or a social media post, creating a cohesive and comprehensive marketing approach.

Unlike traditional advertising, the content you create can continue to provide value long after it's published. Evergreen content, which remains relevant over time, can attract new audiences and keep existing ones coming back, long after its initial release.

The strength of content marketing lies in its ability to build a bridge between businesses and their audience.

By focusing on providing value, educating, and engaging your audience, you lay the groundwork for a strong, loyal community that supports your brand not just as consumers, but as advocates and partners in your business journey.

BISMANINC.COM 59

Innovative Use: Encourage user-generated content through unique, brand-specific hashtags. This not only increases brand visibility but also fosters a sense of community. For example, Coca-Cola’s #ShareACoke campaign was a massive hit as it personalized the experience for users.

Monitoring and Engagement: Actively monitor these hashtags and engage with the audience. Responding to posts or featuring user content on your platforms can amplify reach and engagement.

Creative Contests: Design contests that encourage creativity and sharing. For instance, Starbucks’ White Cup Contest invited customers to draw on their cups and share the designs online.

Strategic Partnerships: Partner with influencers or complementary brands for giveaways. This can dramatically extend the reach of your campaign beyond your existing audience.

Video Testimonials: Shift from written to video testimonials, as videos can be more engaging and shareable.

Real-Time Stories: Use platforms like Instagram Stories or Facebook Live to share customer experiences in real-time, adding authenticity to your brand.

Storytelling with Reviews: Create a narrative around reviews. For example, sharing a customer's journey of how a product solved a specific problem.

Highlighting UGC: Use positive reviews as part of your social media content strategy. This not only showcases real feedback but also encourages others to share their experiences.

Quizzes and Polls: Use interactive content like quizzes, polls, and surveys on your social media platforms to engage and learn more about your audience's preferences.

Webinars and Live Q&A Sessions: Host educational webinars or live Q&A sessions on platforms like YouTube or Facebook Live to encourage real-time interaction.

60 MARCH 2024

Expert Insights: Share thought leadership articles or interviews with industry experts. This not only provides value but also positions your brand as a knowledgeable authority.

Guest Blogging: Collaborate with other businesses or influencers by guest blogging on each other's platforms, expanding your reach to a new audience.

Embracing New Formats: Platforms like Instagram Stories and Reels or TikTok offer new, dynamic ways to share content. These formats are highly engaging and can help in reaching a younger demographic.

Newsletter Sharing: Encourage subscribers to share your newsletter content. Include shareable content snippets or easy-to-share links within your emails.

Each strategy offers a unique way to connect with audiences, build community, and ultimately drive business growth. Remember, the key is to stay authentic and consistently deliver value, making your brand a trusted and relatable entity in your industry.

Red Bull is a prime example of a brand that transcends its product through content marketing. By focusing on high-energy sports and lifestyle content, Red Bull has created a brand image that is about much more than just energy drinks. Their content, which includes events like Red Bull Stratos and Red Bull Rampage, keeps the audience engaged and cements the brand's position in the lifestyle and entertainment industry.

By highlighting real customer stories, focusing on usergenerated content, and maintaining a conversational tone, they have created a community of loyal fans. This approach has helped them build a strong brand identity that resonates with their target market.

Successful content marketing isn't just about selling a product or service; it's about creating content that resonates with your audience, building a community, and establishing your brand as a leader in your industry. Whether through transparency, educational resources, storytelling, or community engagement, these brands have shown that effective content marketing requires a deep understanding of your audience and a commitment to delivering consistent value.

As we look ahead, the landscape of content marketing is poised for even more transformative changes. Personalization and interactive content, propelled by advancements in AI and machine learning, are just the tip of the iceberg. Here are some key trends and developments that are shaping the future of content marketing:

Hyper-Personalization Through Data Analytics

As data analytics become more sophisticated, content marketing will shift towards hyper-personalization. This means content will not just be tailored to broad audience segments but to individual preferences and behaviors. By analyzing user data, businesses will be able to create content that resonates on a personal level, thereby increasing engagement and loyalty.

Voice Search Optimization

With the increasing use of digital assistants like Alexa and Siri, optimizing content for voice search is becoming crucial. This involves adapting the content to natural language and question-based queries, making it more accessible through voice commands.

Immersive Experiences with AR and VR

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are set to offer immersive and interactive experiences to users. For example, a real estate company could use VR to give virtual tours of properties, while a fashion retailer could use AR to allow customers to try on clothes virtually.

Interactive Content

The future of content marketing will see a rise in interactive elements like quizzes, polls, and interactive videos.

This type of content not only engages the audience but also provides valuable insights into their preferences and choices.

AI-Driven Content

Creation and Curation

AI is not just revolutionizing content personalization but also content creation and curation. AI algorithms can now generate basic content and help curate personalized content streams for individual users, making the process more efficient and tailored.

Content for Wearable Technology

As wearable technology becomes more prevalent, content marketing strategies will need to adapt to these new platforms. This could mean shorter, more concise content, optimized for small screens and onthe-go consumption.

Sustainability and Ethical Marketing

Consumers are increasingly favoring brands that demonstrate social responsibility and environmental sustainability. Content marketing will need to reflect these values, highlighting a brand’s commitment to making a positive impact on society and the planet.

Ephemeral Content

Inspired by platforms like Snapchat

and Instagram Stories, ephemeral content (content that is only available for a short duration) will continue to be popular. This type of content creates a sense of urgency and can drive immediate engagement.

Greater Focus on Video Content

Video content, especially short-form videos, will continue to dominate. With the rise of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, creating engaging, short, and snappy video content will be key.

Blockchain in Content Marketing

Blockchain technology could play a role in content marketing, particularly in terms of content security and copyright management. It also offers the potential for more transparent and customer-controlled data management.

As we embrace these changes, the potential to connect with audiences in meaningful and impactful ways is enormous. Remember, the core of content marketing is about telling a story that resonates; how and where we tell that story will continue to evolve with these emerging trends and technologies.

BISMANINC.COM 63

The landscape of content marketing has been transformed by technological advancements, offering unparalleled opportunities for businesses to enhance their content strategies. Here's a closer look at how technology is playing a pivotal role:

AI-Driven Content Creation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can now assist in generating content ideas, creating basic drafts, and even suggesting improvements to existing content. For instance, AI can analyze trends and consumer behavior to suggest topics that are likely to engage your target audience. However, the human touch remains essential for ensuring that the content aligns with your brand voice and values.

SEO Tools

The integration of advanced SEO tools has become essential in content marketing. These tools help in identifying the right keywords, understanding search intent, and optimizing content for better search engine rankings. Enhanced SEO ensures that your content reaches its intended audience through organic search.

Personalization Engines

Today's consumers expect content that speaks directly to them. Personalization engines use data like browsing history, past purchases, and customer interactions to tailor content to individual users. This technology ensures that the content delivered is relevant to each user, thereby increasing engagement and loyalty.

Predictive Analytics

By leveraging data analytics, businesses can predict trends, understand customer preferences, and create content that resonates with their audience. Predictive analytics tools analyze historical data and current market trends to help businesses anticipate what their customers will want next. This insight is invaluable for creating content that is not only relevant but also timely.

Content Management Systems (CMS)

Modern CMS platforms are more than just tools for publishing content. They offer features like content scheduling, multi-platform integration, and audience analytics. This helps businesses manage their content efficiently across various channels, ensuring consistent messaging and branding.

Chatbots and Virtual Assistants

These AI-powered tools enhance customer interaction by providing instant responses and personalized assistance. They can be integrated into content strategies to improve user experience, offer recommendations, and even gather feedback.

Incorporating these technological advancements into your content marketing strategy can significantly enhance your ability to connect with and understand your audience, deliver personalized content, and measure the effectiveness of your campaigns.

Interactive

and Immersive Content Technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are beginning to influence content marketing. They offer immersive experiences, making content more engaging and memorable. For instance, a real estate company can use VR to give virtual tours of properties to potential buyers.

Social Media Analytics

With social media being a key platform for content distribution, analytics tools provided by these platforms or third-party services offer deep insights into content performance. Understanding metrics such as engagement rates, shares, and audience demographics helps in fine-tuning content strategies for better performance.

Video Production Tools

With the growing preference for video content, easy-to-use video production tools have become vital. These tools enable businesses to create high-quality videos without the need for extensive technical expertise or resources.

Content marketing offers a more subtle, value-driven approach in a world where consumers are bombarded with ads. By focusing on building relationships and offering real value, businesses can attract, engage, and retain customers more effectively than ever before. Remember, in content marketing, your audience is more than just buyers; they are a community you are part of and grow with.

Ministry on the Margins

Empowering Lives in the Bismarck-Mandan Community

Nonprofit organizations are oftentimes overlooked in the community due to a lack of promotional funds and advertising, amongst other reasons. To help spread awareness of these efforts being made, we feature a local nonprofit in each issue that we believe deserves a spotlight shined on the great work that they’ve done and continue to do within the community.

Founded in 2013 by Sister Kathleen Atkinson, Order of Saint Benedict, a Benedictine Sister from Annunciation Monastery, Ministry on the Margins has become a longstanding leader for individuals facing homelessness, reentry from prison, addiction, and mental health challenges. With its diverse range of services and unwavering commitment to compassion, Ministry on the Margins has earned its place as a force for change in the Bismarck-Mandan community.

I connected with Sister Kathleen Atkinson, founder and executive director of Ministry on the Margins, to discuss Ministry on the Margins' steady growth since launching, its impact on the Bismarck-Mandan community and beyond, and much more.

Origins and Vision

Ministry on the Margins traces its roots back to November of 2013 when Sister Kathleen first entered the North Dakota State Prison as a volunteer. Witnessing the challenges faced by individuals during their reentry journey, she was moved to take action. In March 2014, with the help of dedicated volunteers, Ministry on the Margins opened a food pantry, and their vision of supporting those during times of transition was set in motion.

“One of the men in my Bible study was released and I learned the huge challenges that someone in the reentry period of their journey faces. Responding to him and others in crisis, I was joined by volunteers to open a food pantry. Our vision remains the same to this day, which

has always been to support people who fall through the cracks, especially during times of transition,” Atkinson said.

Ministry on the Margins’ impact on the Bismarck-Mandan community is far-reaching and multifaceted. Each week, approximately 1,500 individuals benefit from the organization's services, which include a food pantry, prison-to-society support, a nighttime coffee house, and an ecumenical Christian worship service. These offerings have provided, and continue to provide, a lifeline of essential resources to individuals in need.

What Sets Ministry on the Margins Apart?

Margins, several lesser-known aspects deserve recognition.

Firstly, Ministry on the Margins has a strong commitment to “second chance” hiring services, employing nine individuals through this program.

Driven by a volunteer-based approach, Ministry on the Margins prioritizes personal connections and focuses on addressing the unique needs of individuals in crisis. It is not defined by a physical building or a set of programs but rather by its unwavering dedication to the people it serves and their needs during times of crisis.

Additionally, their nighttime coffee house serves 50-70 people each night, collaborating with first responders to ensure safety and connect individuals with crucial services. Moreover, the Ministry on the Margins extends its reach

through street outreach, employing social workers who provide vital services directly to those in need.

Suzanne

"Suzanne is one of many people who was just one paycheck away from being homeless and when a medical emergency hit, that is exactly where she found herself.

Over seven months, she valiantly kept her family of four together. They lived with friends, in a garage, tent, and small hotel room. During this time, the Ministry on the Margins supplied stability, rides to appointments, basic necessities, and connections to available resources. When housing was acquired, the Ministry on the Margins helped with furniture and moving. The greatest reward is watching them help others as they have been helped."

organization's work, and collaborating to provide housing or employment opportunities for those in need.

Readers who wish to support Ministry on the Margins can explore several avenues for involvement. Whether offering a day of service, making donations of food, finances, or paper products, or keeping an eye out for upcoming events and opportunities to engage, everyone can play a role in strengthening the impact of this remarkable organization.

As Ministry on the Margins celebrates its 10th anniversary, Sister Kathleen and the entire organization express deep gratitude for the unwavering support of the community. It is through the collaborative efforts and compassionate spirit of individuals, churches, organizations, and educational institutions that Ministry on the Margins continues to empower lives and create a brighter future for all.

The journey of Ministry on the Margins, under the guidance of Sister Kathleen Atkinson and the support of the BismarckMandan community, exemplifies the impact that dedication, and collective action can have on society's most vulnerable. It's clear that their efforts go beyond mere assistance—they foster hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging among those who often feel forgotten.

Marcus

"Marcus grew up in the streets of Chicago spending much of his life in and out of juvenile detention centers. He ended up in the ND State Penitentiary and, at the age of 27, finally decided this was not the life he wanted. After connecting with Ministry on the Margins, Marcus set two goals—to get his GED and GOD. While in prison he was baptized and he became the first person in his family to earn a GED/diploma. Now that he’s out of prison he has a team of mentors who support him and help him with basic life skills. He can be an inspiration to his family that the cycle can be broken."

The achievements of Ministry on the Margins remind us of the power of community and the importance of supporting those in need through various means—be it volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word.

We applaud these two extraordinary women entrepreneurs with diverse backgrounds and a shared passion for dogs. Lila, a former member of the North Dakota National Guard, and Michelle, presently serving in the North Dakota National Guard, embarked on a journey that led them to establish Bed N' Biscuit Ranch—a sanctuary for pets providing services such as boarding, grooming, training, and daycare.

Lila, with a background in medicine and microbiology, and Michelle, a law school graduate, found common ground in their love for dogs and a desire to address the need for quality dog boarding services for fellow service members during deployments or drills in Bismarck. The idea evolved into Bed N' Biscuit Ranch, affectionately known as "The Ranch."

Reflecting on their military training, Lila emphasizes the importance of adapting and overcoming challenges. Despite unexpected issues during the

construction phase, they persevered, resulting in a facility they are immensely proud of. After working with the Women’s Business Center to achieve their Women Owned Business designation, they were referred to VBOC of the Dakotas for additional assistance. By incorporating the suggested marketing improvements, they have strengthened their online visibility and positioned themselves for continued expansion.

Looking ahead, Lila and Michelle have already opened a second location and are actively expanding. Exciting developments lie ahead for this dynamic duo!

Fundraiser With Midwest Flair

Kae Watson was diagnosed with breast cancer in February of 2020. “Nobody ever wants to hear those words,” Watson said. Quick action on her part, and that of the doctors at Bismarck Cancer Center, meant Watson's cancer battle was shorter than most, but it still left lasting scars.

“I was lucky,” Watson said. “I didn’t have a difficult diagnosis. But it still took a toll on my mental health. I wanted to find a purpose for the pain.”

Watson didn’t just want to be a survivor. She wanted to help other women in her community.

“Insurance only covers the medical costs of a cancer diagnosis,” Watson said. “For those of us living in rural areas, it doesn’t cover hotels, gas, or other travel expenses. That portion of the financial burden, which can be up to 40% of the overall cost, falls squarely on the patient and their family. We wanted to help lessen the financial burden, as well as the emotional one, for other women in our community.”

During a curling bonspiel, she slid out the idea of a “Curling for the Cure” fundraiser to not only raise funds for breast cancer patients but to bring together women from across the region in sisterhood and solidarity.

Curling for the Cure

On the Button

It was early 2021. The game had just ended between Minot’s only two women’s curling teams. The eight women were swapping stories at the Minot Curling Club. Watson had received a clean bill of health from her oncologist the previous May.

Like an expert curling release, the idea glided through the group, gaining momentum. Before the round was over, plans for the first “Curling for the Cure” Bonspiel were underway.

“It’s other women who hold you up when you get a breast cancer diagnosis,” Watson said. “We wanted to do something to help take care of our sisters, aunts, mothers, and neighbors when they needed it most.”

The Fourth End

Kae Watson, Sarah Thorson, Brittany Taciuk, Lisa Loeffler, Rosanne Schaefer, Chanda DeCent, Norma Boles, and Kit Christensen organized the first event in just three weeks.

Since there weren’t enough women’s teams in Minot for a full bonspiel bracket, the group used the event as a fundraiser and an opportunity to recruit more female curlers. It was a success on both counts, raising $2,500 and helping the club field four more women's teams.

Now, four years in, the event has become an international affair, bringing female curling teams from Canada, Minnesota, and across the Dakotas to Minot. 12 teams, 48 women, competed in January 2024, raising $11,500 for women with breast cancer in

western North Dakota—a total of $28,000 over the life of the event.

But while the actual competition is just for female athletes, the rest of the Minot community comes together to support the cause. The club’s male members maintain the ice, serve food, and otherwise help keep the tournament running smoothly. The wider community stops by to cheer on the competitors and bid on silent auction items.

Funds are divided between Trinity Health in Minot and the Bismarck Cancer Center, earmarked for their patient care endowments, which help cover costs outside the scope of insurance.

“There are definitely deserving national organizations,” said Sharah Thorson, “but it was important to us that the money remains local. We have access to great cancer facilities here in the Dakotas. We wanted to support these facilities and the local women they serve.”

Advancing to the Next Round

With the 2024 event concluded, the committee is already looking forward to January 2025. The “Curling for the Cure” Bonspiel is on the calendar for the last weekend in January at Minot Curling Club. You can keep up with event announcements, including the theme and registration deadlines, on the group’s Facebook page.

The group is hoping for a few more women’s curling teams to participate in the competition. The event is also open to the public for those just wanting to join in the community and support a good cause.

“We are the largest ‘Curling for the Cure’ event in the United States,” Watson said. “It’s such a humbling experience to be part of this great group of women.”
